THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT… GOOD RIDDANCE TO HULK EYESORE

The Ivaka has finally been removed from Noosa River at a cost of $16,500. Picture: A Black Photography

The unsightly abandoned vessel Ivaka has finally been removed from Noosa River at a cost of $16,500.

State Member for Noosa Glen Elmes has congratulated Maritime Safety Queensland for arranging for the removal of the hulk ‘Ivaka’ from the Noosa River last week. “It has been a long and complicated process, but now there is one less eyesore on our beautiful river,” he said. “The health of the Noosa River is a priority for the entire community - whether it is keeping the river and foreshore free from pollution, reporting unauthorised waste discharge from vessels or ensuring run-off into the waterway is not contaminated, our river will only retain its fantastic water quality rating if we are all dedicated to its health. Mr Elmes said as the State Member he would continue to work with Noosa Council and the many State Government agencies to improve the management of the river and provide for more local control and community engagement. Claytons Towing towed away the hulk and a spokesperson said it was a tricky job with only a small window in which to carry out the operation. The spokesperson said the boat was in bad condition, so they had to keep the hulk together while transporting it. The boat will now be turned into scrap metal. ● Jolene Ogle

START OF THE PHONEY WAR

PERMANENT HOME FOR COTTAGE

It’s clear an election is on the horizon with Queensland State Opposition Leader Tim Nicholls hitting the Sunshine Coast and Noosa for a range of announcements and meetings this week.

Mr Nicholls laughed off suggestions he was on the campaign trail, saying he simply enjoys meeting people in the community and remained coy on whether there would be a new seat announced in the Coolum area when the boundary redistributions were announced on Friday 24 February. Mr Nicholls did say the LNP would run a candidate in the seat of Buderim, but there was no word yet on who the candidate might be. Mr Nicholls joined Member for Noosa Glen Elmes in Noosa on Thursday (23 February) for a visit to the Eumundi Road and Resource Recovery Centre to commit to the LNP’s promise of a container deposit scheme. Before answering a barrage of questions about One Nation, the coming state election and preference deals, Mr Nicholls said the container deposit scheme (CDS) helped keep the environment clean and supported the community. “This is a scheme that pays people to return their empty containers. They can either do it through reverse vending machines or they can do it where they bought it,” he said. “If there are people who choose not to do that, there are community groups that have the opportunity to share in up to almost $25 million to support their activities and help them keep our community clean.” Mr Nicholls said over 30 million plastic bottles ended up in landfill each year and even more that ended up in local waterways and on the road. “This is good for the environment, it’s good for consumers and it’s great for helping support community groups,” he said. The Labor Government has so far conducted a 12-month feasibility study of the CDS and has released a discussion paper about the implementation of the scheme, but Mr Nicholls said this is simply “navel-gazing”. “It’s a crazy amount of navel-gazing about something that just makes environmental sense,” he said.

The recently re-established Katie Rose Cottage has just been given a large cash injection, thanks to a mysterious benefactor, with directors now looking for a permanent home for the community organistion.

State Opposition Leader Tim Nicholls, joined by Member for Noosa Glen Elmes, faced a barrage of questions about One Nation, preference deals and the coming state election, while announcing the LNP’s commitment to a container deposit scheme. In a statement to the media in July last year, the Labor Government confirmed Queensland would have a CDS by 2018. Environment Minister Dr Steven Miles said at the time that Queensland and NSW had entered into high-level talks about setting up a single-scheme administrator. “We want a seamless system that’s good for the environment and friendly for business. No-one wants an outcome where the rules that apply to a bottle of soft drink sold at Tweed Heads, are different to the one you buy at the Gold Coast,” Dr Miles said. “A single administrator could cover both states to deliver the highest level of efficiency and effectiveness.” Noosa Today sat down with Mr Nichols for a one-on-one interview, which appears on page 18. ● Jolene Ogle

Katie Rose Cottage chairperson Carol Raye said the sizeable donation will allow the community hospice organisation to buy a secure and permanent home. Ms Raye said the organisation’s current temporary facility near Cooroy had offered the hospice a place to set-up administration and establish services such as counselling, hospice day care, outreach services and 24-hour hospice care. “The directors are now working on the purchase of a new suitable and permanent site, and hope to be able to announce confirmation of a contract in the very near future,” Ms Raye said. ●

hen you’re beautiful, bubbly and blessed with a Scottish accent straight out of Mel Gibson’s film Braveheart it must be easy to make friends. Noosa entrepreneur, mother, wife, social genius and all round woman-who-has-itall Wendy Wilson was an obvious choice to feature on the cover of an issue featuring Women in Business and International Women’s Day. But sitting down with this bonnie lass, it becomes apparent that things are never what they seem on the outside. What makes Wendy Wilson so perfect is that she admits to being so hopelessly lonely and lost at times in her life. Having to overcome her own struggles and create more balance in her life to feel fulfilled, Wendy decided to push herself out of her comfort zone which was the catalyst for her social empire Life Beyond 30. L B 30 was born out of a move to the Sunshine Coast where Wendy’s husband followed his career and her plan was to become a ‘lady of leisure’. In reality, it was not so glamorous and her relationship began to suffer. “I didn’t have much to chat to my husband about. Pairing of the socks, (that was the breaking point) cleaning up the house, walks on the beach, it was the same every day,” Wendy said.

Wendy having fun with Lorraine Keeling, Emma Hancock, June Beltz and Paula Reid at a recent Life Beyond 30 outing at The Stomp.

FRIENDLY WENDY’S

SOCIAL EXPERIMENT

PAIRING SOCKS WAS THE BREAKING POINT FOR LADY OF LEISURE WENDY WILSON SO SHE STARTED TO LOOK FOR A LIFE BEYOND LONELINESS. SHE TELLS HOLLIE HARRIS “Women who had moved here from other places, Sydney, Melbourne, even different countries, who had left their homes and friends all so happy to meet up. “It was a group of women who didn’t know each other at all and we all had such a lovely time mingling and getting to know each other,” Wendy said. Wendy’s calling had begun. Life Beyond 30 was born and with the response she received, it was only natural to continue making it a regular thing and bring in more women who needed an outlet. “Eventually, the ladies were looking for more activities and other times to do things which sometimes didn’t suit me as I had a five-year-old, some ladies didn’t have children and wanted things to do in the evenings.” Wendy’s little group needed to evolve so it was time to let go and allow it to grow into something bigger.

“We ended up with co-ordinators for events, which was difficult to let go of the control at first. “We initially would meet up and have a meal, go to the movies, coffees, afternoon drinks, or walking and now we also do some really exciting activities. “We are going abseiling soon and a group of us are going to see Adele in Brisbane. “Last year a group of ladies went to China, others went on a cruise - there are so many amazing opportunities. “If you find some ladies you click with, then you have an instant travel partner - some of them are widowed or single and its perfect for them,” she said. Bringing women and families together is a passion for Wendy and she still maintains some of the original friendships from those early days when she first placed the advertisement.

12338043-KC5-17

“My husband was getting in from work and I would be just desperate to talk to him. I was lonely and so I needed him to be my best friend, my family, my girlfriend - my everything. “There is so much pressure on the partner and it took a while for us to realise I was needing him to fill all these roles. So I put an ad in the paper,” she said. Yes, Wendy Wilson placed an advertisement in her local paper. The advert put it pretty simply that she needed an outlet from her partner and that she was looking for women over 30 who wanted to hang out. “I had so many women get in touch with me! My friends back in the UK told me ‘Oh my god, you’re so sad!’ “It came into my head to do the ad and I just thought ‘I’m going for it’. I must have had about 30 ladies get in touch with me who were all were in the same boat but didn’t know what to do about it.

“I am still friends with some of the ladies from the original group but some of them have moved on and begun Life Beyond 30 groups elsewhere, which is just amazing. “They realised they can’t get by without the Life Beyond 30 girls, so I have helped them set up their own groups. “We are expanding so quickly now and there even groups in other states.” Wendy’s Life Beyond 30 members receive discounts at loads of local stores and a new website will make it simple to find out which stores honour their membership or what local group activities are happening. Humble and softly spoken, Wendy would probably be the last person to say how her social activities-come passion-come career has changed people’s lives but when members admit to her how different their world is now thanks to what she has created, it is hard to deny. “One of my ladies came to me and said that she was looking into going into an over 55s retirement village. “She needed that social interaction and had sorted out where she was going to go. She was going to put her house up for sale and then Life Beyond 30 came along and gave her everything she needed. She didn’t need to do that move toward a retirement village anymore. “It’s not just about the women. It’s about the families as well; the partners, the children - they all get to mingle together and attend parties and get to know each other and create bonds. “It has really begun to bring communities back together again.

“I DIDN’T HAVE MUCH TO CHAT TO MY HUSBAND ABOUT. PAIRING OF THE SOCKS, (THAT WAS THE BREAKING POINT) CLEANING UP THE HOUSE, WALKS ON THE BEACH, IT WAS THE SAME EVERY DAY” “My son, Owen, absolutely loves fishing. A few weeks ago, I got myself in such a muddle with the rod and the hooks and all of that, so I put out a message to the group asking if there might be a granddad who would be willing to sit with Owen and I to teach us all about fishing and lures and all that! “One of the ladies answered and said she and her husband would love to do it and they took us to Munna Point and Owen caught a fish! “I get so emotional about it because there are grannies and granddads here whose families are not and now we just come together and help each other along and fill those empty places,” she said. So anyone can take a few leaves out of Wendy Wilson’s book - be honest and bold, take a chance, create a fulfilling life and find happiness. They say it takes a village to raise a child but the adults need people too. Wendy dreams of a worldwide network for women and their families to come together, connect and support each other. “It’s not just about me anymore,” she said. HIGH-YIELD VISITORS OUR BEST BET BY JOLENE OGLE Mayor Tony Wellington has defended an elitist approach to traffic management saying, it’s not about keeping low-spend, day-visitors out, but more about getting the balance right. In an interview with ABC radio on 1 February, Cr Wellington said the traffic chaos may be caused in part by the “day tripper”. “The people who want to drive into Noosa for the day and want to drive out again expecting to get a park at near Main Beach or Hastings Street,” he said. “Day trippers make up 60 per cent of those who visit Noosa, but in terms of their overall spend, it is only 15 per cent of the total.” Cr Wellington said council wouldn’t erect gates to keep day trippers out, but the “emphasis has to be on the high-yield market” and council would consider “disincentives to the day tripper market”. Cr Wellington has acknowledged there is “quite a bit of debate lately” regarding the nature and impact of visitors to Noosa Shire, with day trippers being a singular point of focus, and wants to now provide clarity regarding council’s approach to the matter. “My fellow councillors and I are all in agreement that we want Noosa to be a thoroughly welcoming place, for residents and visitors alike,” he said. “Overall, I think it’s fair to say that the vast majority of Noosa Shire residents are extremely tolerant of the impact imposed by tourists and large-scale events. Most seem to appreciate that tourism is far and away our largest economic sector. Research reveals it employs about 16,000 people.” Cr Wellington said more than two million visitors injected over $940million into the local economy throughout 2016, but tourists do unwittingly put pressure on public infrastructure. “We do need to find a workable balance between resident amenity and tourism attraction,” he said. “There is certainly no point in demonising so-called day trippers. They will always be part of the visitor mix. Of course they also inject money into our economy, spending $155 million in Noosa last year. “However, with increasing numbers of people expected to live in South East Queensland, the pressure to accommodate the drive-in day visitor will only increase, and that presents us with a range of problems.” Cr Wellington said, it was no secret Tourism Noosa concentrated their marketing on the high-yield overnight visitors rather than the low-yield day visitor. Statistics show the high-yield strategy is working with interstate visitors up 50 per cent and their spend up by 77 per cent to $470 million. Cr Wellington said the success of Noosa’s tourism market lay in getting the balance just right. “When does Noosa’s success actually start to become its undoing, as the visitor finds Noosa replicating the crowded big city they are often

Is the day tripper to blame for Noosa’s traffic woes? Mayor Tony Wellington wants to set the record straight. escaping?” he said. “The Noosa ‘brand’ is premised on a relaxing, village-like and environmentally friendly atmosphere. What is the tipping point, where further increases in visitor numbers may have a detrimental impact on our tourism sector per se? “All this plays into a range of decisions at council, most pointedly our upcoming transport strategy.” Council will release the Draft Transport Strategy for comment at the March round of council meetings, and will also hold discussions with key stakeholder groups. “The interesting thing about transport is that everyone supposes they have some expertise. But often the popular solutions are not as effective as many want to believe,” Cr Wellington said. “I have said before that increasing parking does not reduce congestion - in fact it does the opposite by encouraging more cars. Experience and research elsewhere has also shown that making public transport free only decreases private car usage by 9 per cent. It is not the panacea that many would like to imagine. “Thus, the final answer to this complex problem will involve a broad range of actions, not just one or two.” ●

Noosa mayor Tony Wellington.

NEWS CLEAN-UP AUSTRALIA DAY It’s time to clean up the shire, with Noosa councillor Joe Jurisevic calling on everyone to get involved in this year’s Clean-up Australia Day on Sunday 5 March. The local clean-up is co-ordinated by Cr Jursevic and the Noosa Integrated Catchment Association (NICA) with 27 registered sites around the Noosa Biosphere offering plenty of volunteering opportunities. “It’s time to roll up the sleeves and get stuck in to clean up our parks, creeks, rivers, beaches, bushland and streets,” Cr Jurisevic said. There are many locations across the Noosa region where the public can register to be a part of the clean-up with all Hinterland towns involved. There will be a strong focus on illegal dumping sites and also a flotilla on the river to help remove waste from local waterways. “All volunteers are welcome to join us for lunch at Noosaville Lions Park provided by the Noosa Lions Club after the event or at one of the barbecues being hosted at some sites,” he said. “So put on a hat, grab your gloves and bring a water bottle, and register at a site near you to be a part of Clean-up Australia Day in Noosa from 8am on Sunday 5 March.” Registration sites can be found at www.noosariver.com.au or www. cleanupaustraliaday.org.au. ●

TOP MARKS FOR SCHOOL Good Shepherd Lutheran College students has been listed as one of the top five independent schools in the state based on improved student performance in the senior years of schooling. Federal Coalition MP Andrew Laming conducted a detailed analysis of Queensland NAPLAN and OP data to determine which high schools have materially boosted the performance of their students in Years 9 to 12.

Clean Up Australia Day is back this Sunday 5 March.

Mr Laming said although the analysis of performance involves a number of stages, it includes Year 9 NAPLAN results adjusted for higher or lower than expected participation and OP Good Shepherd Lutheran College 2016 Year 12 cohort recognised for academic gains during their senior years, outcomes adjusted for higher or lower than expected OP eligibility. During the conversation Mr Laming advised that Good Shepherd was the top independent school in Queensland

RECYCLING CHAMPS Local schools are working with council to help their students become recycling champions. Council’s sustainability officer Emma Menzies says most of Noosa’s schools are now recycling in some way, shape or form. At Noosa High’s Pomona campus, the school’s student leaders have risen to the challenge. Council has provided the school with recycling bins for the classrooms and the student leaders are spreading the recycling message to other students. Noosa High’s junior engagement leader Alex Nockles said there was a great energy around campus on the recycling campaign with the student leaders taking the lead and encouraging new ideas. Ms Menzies has met with many Noosa schools to explain what happens to our recycled items and show the students around council’s landfill. “The invitation is open to all schools and we can assist with transport. At the landfill we show students an old capped landfill cell and discuss what happens

Many of the food collected by Reap is redirected to worthy causes and local charities and to help deliver the food, Reap has joined forces with owner and chef at Noosa Waterfront Restaurant to hold a fund-raising dinner. NEWS NEW BOUNDARIES FOR NOOSA The State Electoral Commission has released the new proposed boundaries for Queensland with a big shakeup in the Noosa electorate. The commission has recommended parts of Cooran, Federal, Pomona, Lake MacDonald and Cooroy join the seat of Nicklin’s boundaries. For Noosa, the commission recommended the seat of Noosa retain as much of the localities of the Noosa Shire Council as possible. According to the proposal, the seat of Noosa would gain Kin Kin, Cootharaba and parts of the Cooloola, Cooran and Pomona suburbs. The seat would also expand to include Pinbarren, Inskip, Rainbow Beach and the balance of Como, while losing Weyba Downs, Eerwah Vale, Doonan, Peregian Beach, Peregian Springs, Coolum Beach and Verrierdale. Member for Noosa Glen Elmes is yet to comment on the proposed boundary changes. ●

Pictured: USC Law Students Association members Chelsea Dohle, Tayleigh Jenkins, Beth McKenna, Rachel Last, Sarah Coombs and Jessica Popple have a ball in the inflatable pool at the USC Student Guild fun day.

HOSPITAL BUSES A local bus company has stepped up to offer direct transport to the new university hospital in Kawana after Translink refused to offer a direct service for Noosa residents. Councillor Ingrid Jackson said pleas for a direct service had been ignored by Translink and commuters, patients and visitors faced a two-hour trip to the new hospital, but help appears to be on the way. “I’m pleased to learn that the privately owned bus service, Active Tours and Transfers, will be starting a bus route from the hinterland to and from the Sunshine Coast University Hospital as soon as the hospital opens,” she said. “The concession price will be about $50 for a

return trip or $45 one-way. To assist defray this cost, some people may qualify for funding through Queensland Health’s Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme. It is probably best if people contact their medical practitioner on this matter.” ●

LEARNING HELP FOR FAMILIES Noosa families can help their kids excel in the classroom thanks to a new website launched by the Turnbull Government. Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien said the new website, Learning Potential Resources, was filled with hundreds of ideas, activities, games and videos to help parents of primary school children get involved in their child’s learning.

CCIQ Noosa president Steven Boyd has announced the organisation will change the format of their monthly meetings for 2017. Mr Boyd said the previously “formal structure” will be replaced with monthly drop-in sessions. “While the events were well received we are aware that it is often hard to juggle home, work and other networking events, especially if the topic is not a current pressing issue for your business,” he said. “So we are trialling monthly drop-in sessions where we welcome your queries and will do our best to find a solution or lead you to someone who can. The drop-in sessions will commence shortly and an invite will be shared through Facebook and the website.” Visit website https://noosa.cciq.com.au for more information on meetings. ●

NEWS “This new website gives parents access to the resources that teachers are using in the classroom, and adapts them to help parents bring those lessons to life in the home environment,” Mr O’Brien said. Minister for Education and Training Simon Birmingham said parental engagement was a key factor in enhancing a child’s learning, supporting the vital work teachers did. Learning Potential Resources supports the Australian Curriculum for primary school and contains three main sections. The website is www.learningpotential.edu.au and an app can also be downloaded from the site. ●

Some 12 years ago Barbara and Marc Phillips decided that Noosa Springs was the perfect place to get married - even though they lived abroad. Moving to the Sunshine Coast only six months ago with their two children, the couple decided to visit Noosa Springs on Sunday as it was their anniversary. They returned to the exact ceremony site, at Lake Weyba.

ECO TALKS A SUCCESS The Noosa Community Biosphere Association Inc (NCBA) have hosted their inaugural EcoTalks Noosa In Our Biosphere event with more planned throughout the year. The first of the event was held at The J on Monday 20 February with over 40 Noosa locals gathering to hear from world-renowned ecological scientist, former chair of the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere (MAB) program and current chair of the Australian MAB Working Group, Professor Peter Bridgewater. Professor Bridgewater highlighted how the most successful Biosphere Reserves around the world were those with community involvement. NCBA president Dick Barnes said the eco night was an outstanding opportunity for the whole community to become better engaged with what it means to live in the Noosa Biosphere Reserve. “The NCBA is keen to have a two-way dialogue with our community as we work together to support our people, our places and our future. Our monthly EcoTalks sessions are a great forum for this,” he said. ●

shopping bags in Queensland. The public consultation period is now over and Environment Minister Dr Steven Miles said the large numbers of submissions shows Queenslanders are passionate about the issue of plastic bags in the environment. “Since the discussion paper was released in November last year, we have received overwhelming support in favour of a plastic bag ban,” he said. Dr Miles said a plastic bag ban would coincide with the introduction of the Container Refund Scheme in 2018 to reduce the impact of drink container litter on the natural environment. TURTLE FINDINGS Researchers at the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) have uncovered a few surprises about the types of nesting sites selected by turtles on the northern part of the Sunshine Coast between Mudjimba and

PLASTIC BAG BAN CLOSER More than 23,000 Queenslanders have had their say on the proposal to ban lightweight single-use plastic

Noosa. The world-first research measured for the first time the full spectrum of environmental clues that could be used by turtles when deciding where to lay their eggs. The results were exciting for USC Science Honours graduate Ilana Kelly, 24, of Coolum, whose project with four USC academics has been published in the PeerJ biological and medical sciences journal. The research, which studied 19 nests of mainly loggerhead turtles between November 2014 and February 2015, found that the turtles did not seem overly fussy when selecting their sites. However, the nesting sites shared some common characteristics - including a few that appeared contrary to previous studies in other marine turtle nesting locations. Ms Kelly said the nests were distributed in parts of the dune that did not have exceptionally lower or higher vegetation, or significant differences in slope, exposure or sand attributes. Marine turtles nest at night on Sunshine Coast beaches from November each year, with hatchlings generally leaving the nests from February to April. ●

NEW COMMITTEE Following the success of the inaugural Noosa Open Studios event in 2016, the event organisers are pleased to introduce a new committee. Noosa-based artist Tricia Bradford will take over the reins from Chris Pritchard as plans get underway for the August event. Tricia said she was not the professional that Chris was but she was confident that with her experienced committee and some new members the event would be just as popular this year. Tricia said there were many new studios to visit all over the Noosa Shire and enhance the experience of last year’s event and the creative atmosphere of more diverse artists as they work and talk about their practice. ●

IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT … TYREPOWER HERE TO STAY Tyrepower owners Allison and Dallas want to reassure customers they are here to stay, despite rumours the longstanding company will close when the new service station opens. “We have heard a lot of rumours from our customers that we have either sold out or that we are closing down or moving because of the service station that is getting built next door to us,” Allison said. “We have been in business for close to 12 years now, and we are definitely not going anywhere any time soon. We are hoping to bring home the big award for International Dealer of the Year in April so that is reason enough to stick around too!” Allison said they predict the new service station would actually be good for business and are looking forward to the day when they were back beside another service station. ●

A frightening image has done the rounds this week; a surfer sharing the waves at Tea Tree Bay with Jaws. The moment was supposedly captured by drone footage from a local photographer which captured the surfer trimming along with a three-metre white shark under his board. It has been identified as fake, and the local business posting the piccies said “it was all a bit of a joke.” Thank goodness. ●

NOOSA TODAY 13

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

LOVING THE RAPID PACE OF CHANGE International Women’s Day is this coming Wednesday 8 March and this year the focus is on being bold to make change. The day hopes to encourage everyone to help forge a better working world and a more gender inclusive world. In honour of the worldwide celebration of women, Noosa Today sat down with some of Noosa’s leading community members and asked them about their experiences in the workplace. COUNCILLOR INGRID JACKSON

N

oosa’s only female councillor, Ingrid Jackson is one of only 30 per cent of female councillors throughout Queensland and shares her experiences in various workplaces and what work is left to do in the fight for equality. Have you experienced inequality in the workplace due to your gender? I have always been very focused on achieving goals, so I have not observed any unequal treatment. But I do know that many women find themselves in such situations and I believe there’s still a lot of work to do in this respect - especially when it comes to senior roles and board appointments in many of Australia’s major companies. Have you ever felt disadvantaged because you are female? I always get on well with colleagues and have never felt personally discriminated against. But when I had small children, I had to work just 9am to 5pm (not the longer hours expected in a highly competitive corporate work environment), and this meant I missed out on a lot of workplace-based career-building networking. In your opinion, what can be done to create better equality for men and women in the work force? Inequality in the workplace is not just direct personal discrimination. It is often entrenched in the culture and

rules of the organisation. I spent a couple of years as Equal Employment Opportunity Co-ordinator in the NSW Ministry of Education where I worked to change the system and raise awareness. The key areas that need attention to create greater equality are fair recruitment and selection processes, flexible work hours and flexible leave conditions, learning and training opportunities, promotion on merit, and raising men’s (and women’s) awareness of inadvertent discrimination. Other must do’s are helping talented and skilled women to build their self-confidence, manage their careers, have access to grievance procedures and address sexual harassment. What advice would you offer young women wanting to enter business or management? Be professional and excellent at what you do. Reach out for learning and training opportunities. Go the extra yard. If you think you might be being treated unequally, ask questions of your boss and be gently assertive. But don’t sweat the small stuff. And look out for the women you work with and encourage their career development. I should add here that if women in the Noosa Shire want to consider becoming a councillor, everyone is welcome to attend council meetings. If you let me know you’re coming, I am happy to meet afterwards to answer questions and talk about what being a councillor involves. I am also available to speak to community groups and school groups about the role of councillors. ●

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY SANDY BOLTON

F

ormer councillor Sandy Bolton served on the first Noosa Council since de-amalgamation and after challenging Mayor Tony Wellington for the top job, Sandy is now busy with a long list of community groups and boards. Sandy is currently studying, is a director on local boards and is passionate about resolving social and economic issues through integrated models and connectivity. Have you experienced inequality in the workplace due to your gender? Inequality yes, but not from being female. Coming from an era where women had only been recently allowed into public bars, managing hotels as an 18-year-old in the western suburbs of Sydney in the ’80s saw some interesting responses from fellow managers and AHA members and patrons! However, I was fortunate to work with a private company that was only interested in outcomes, not which gender delivered the outcomes. The greatest shock was when I came from Sydney via management on remote cattle properties in the NT and Queensland to Noosa 25 years ago. It was impossible initially to get your foot in the management door which I had never experienced. I feel that was not specifically gender related ... more part of the culture and ‘system’ which still exists in some forms from traditionalism and territory-based thinking. Have you ever felt disadvantaged because you are female? Over the years I have held positions that were traditionally male and the difficulty was not so much being female, it was later on the responsibilities as a sole parent which a male sole parent may have also encountered. Many positions could not accommodate what was seen as a disadvantage, so employment choice was narrow, and required creativity in negotiating hours and conditions to ensure that I could juggle.

NOOSA TODAY 15

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY “UNTIL THERE IS A BETTER RECOGNITION AND UNDERSTANDING OF ALL ELEMENTS OF INEQUALITY, WE WILL NOT ACHIEVE THE SOCIAL, ECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL OUTCOMES NEEDED FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE…”

Powerhouse Co-op founder Aimee Sherriff, a mother of three.

In contesting the mayoralty, it was interesting that some women felt this was a male role, which indicates that even though women across the world have proven themselves as more than credentialed for leadership positions, there remains a culture that labels and segregates women into “appropriate” roles. This is phasing out rapidly as the realisation the strategies employed under a paternal and capitalistic system has not delivered the outcomes needed by people at home and across the globe. In your opinion, what can be done to create better equality for men and women in the work force? This will happen when inequality and “labelling” is understood for what it is - a barrier and divider to achieving. Across all sectors, issues, and debate, inequality is spoken about but not understood in its entirety, which is about segregation or preference based on difference, pre-conceived ideas, lack of knowledge and fear. Simple improvements could include removing the form fields requiring gender, age and religion as part of applications, salaries set instead of negotiated until our education system includes these skillsets, assisting new concepts such as “Bubdesks” and a promotion of work/life balance as an organisational and cultural norm. Inequality is a form of “bullying” and is destructive to individuals and society as a whole. Knowing this, we support bullying in multiple forms by allowing it to continue, which is very frustrating. Until there is a better recognition and understanding of all elements of inequality, we will not achieve the social, economic and environmental outcomes needed for a sustainable future. What advice would you offer young women wanting to enter business or management? Girls, and boys, that one is easy - educate, negotiate, collaborate, innovate! Get on with the job, individually and collectively, and when in doubt, just ask. Grab a mentor, join the many networks online and otherwise. Be confident in your growing knowledge and your aims, and combine your passion and purpose to delivering positive outcomes for yourself and others. Youngsters, you are our future. Do not focus on what is real or perceived barriers - focus on the desired outcomes and keep that in focus. There are no failures, only experiences, and that is how you gain knowledge very quickly. Go forth without fear, you will be successful and achieve, in ways you may not even imagine, for all of us. ●

AIMEE SHERRIFF

A

imee Sherriff is a mother-of-three, interior designer and founder of the Powerhouse Co-op, a business hub for working parents.

Have you experienced inequality in the workplace due to your gender? Not before motherhood however defiantly after motherhood. In a job interview I was once asked if I was planning on having more children. That’s a hard question to answer as I already had a one-year-old so we were likely to add to our family however I did feel as though an applicant without children or even grown children would have been more preferable from the employer’s perspective. Have you ever felt disadvantaged because you are female? I’ve not personally felt disadvantaged for being female 16 NOOSA TODAY

“YOU HAVE TO CONSTANTLY WORK AT YOUR MINDSET, AND OFTEN RESETTING IT FROM NEGATIVE SELF-TALK AND SELF-DOUBT…” as I believe we can do whatever it is we set our mind to. However I’m aware that it exists, that woman are very good at self-sabotage and self-doubt and giving in to the feelings of inadequacy. To combat this we must rise to support fellow woman and help them to believe in themselves. We are good enough. In your opinion, what can be done to create better equality for men and women in the work force? I’d love to see more onsite child care in companies, both big and small. I as a mother don’t want to be separated from my child at such a young age and leave them in the hands of others, yet as a woman I need to have my creative and business desires met also. What advice would you offer young women wanting to enter business or management? Remember that when starting out 80 per cent is mindset and the other 20 per cent is business. If you have a great mindset you can achieve anything, however it’s an ongoing practice, kind of like religion. You have to constantly work at your mindset, and often resetting it from negative selftalk and self-doubt. Don’t be afraid to ask for advice and be vulnerable however remain strong in your vision and desires and don’t let friends and family knock you off your perch. ●

What challenges do you face being a woman in business? Time is my biggest challenge. I enjoy getting involved with my children and their school activities as well as taking on a committee role with their sporting clubs and community groups. Doing this on top of running my business involves a certain amount of juggling and some good planning.

My advice for women wanting to start their own business - Do it. Do the sums, do the research, then if it all adds up, back yourself and take the chance. There’s no more demanding boss than yourself, but no greater feeling of accomplishment than making a success of your own idea.

that at the time of our opening, real estate agents had a bad stigma due to the way clients were treated. On that principle we started our own business with the philosophy that we would endeavour to work with our clients with a transparent honesty. We started the agency against all odds, and as Real Estate was often thought to be a male dominated industry, the real challenge was showing that a woman could do just as good a job as a man. When I took over the business on my own in 2014, I learnt very early on to take no notice of any prejudice and that the best way to challenge adversity was to do my job well and run my business to the best of my ability. In saying that, there are challenges involved in every business venture but being a woman should never be used as an excuse, or deter anyone from

I have been in the motor trade most of my life and my first job was with Mazda as spare parts delivery driver. Over the years with hard work I became the spare parts manager and the only female in the business. My thoughts were if I know what goes into a car then I would be able to sell new cars as I had the product knowledge. From there my husband and I started a mechanical workshop in the late 80s and owned that for 14 years. What type of business are you involved in? Upon selling our workshop we moved to the lovely Cooroy, we bought Cooroy Spare Parts in 2002. After my husband passed away in 2008 I continued managing the business. We will hit 15 years in business this coming Easter. What challenges do you face being a woman in business? It has been a challenge working in a male dominated industry. But it’s important to not let anything stop you. If you love what you do, give it all you’ve got. What advice do you have for women wanting to start their own business? Never just work for money, work for the enjoyment and satisfaction of what you do. We women can achieve anything when we put our minds to it.

What inspired you to create/go into your business?

What inspired you to create/go into your business? Owning and operating a business is a big decision. You are required to have planning, foresight and also management skills. Primarily I chose to start my own law firm as I had been practicing law for several years and I had a wonderful supportive client base (which I still maintain). I have always been able to work to deadlines, listen to other people’s objectives and to achieve goals. Leadership and mentoring are important to me, so it made sense that I would start my own business as I was natural in my own ideas and able to achieve them. What type of business are you involved in? I own and operate two law firms on the sunshine coast. See Well Law is located in Tewantin and Marcoola. In addition to legal work, we also offer mediation, conveyancing and business support including asset protection. What challenges do you face being a woman in business? The biggest challenge is flexibility in the workplace. To overcome the flexibility our team have a range of job sharing, networking and surrounding ourselves with like-minded supportive people. What advice do you have for women wanting to start their own business? It is important to plan. Not just for today, but for tomorrow and for next year and even ten and twenty years on. Planning is not only for the start up, it has to be on-going to ensure that what works today is going to work tomorrow. You should also ask advice from other people and listen. You need to work hard and make sure that you have the motivation to put into the business – as even on the bad days, it is important to show up. Showing up is the key to success in any job including your own business.

NOOSA TODAY 17

NEWS Member for Noosa Glen Elmes and LNP State Leader Tim Nicholls discussed a range of local issues at a breakfast meeting on Hastings Street.

NO CAMPAIGN TRAIL HERE, SAYS LEADER BY JOLENE OGLE “I normally don’t turn up to Noosa wearing long pants and a rolled-up shirt. I’m usually here in shorts and T-shirts in relaxation mode,” State Opposition Leader Tim Nicholls said in Noosa last week. Mr Nicholls was on the road from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast in the lead-up to the state election, but has denied he was on the campaign trail. Despite the intense media scrutiny of travel expenses, Mr Nicholls said he didn’t stay with Member for Noosa Glen Elmes while in Noosa. “No, I supported local business,” he said. “I’m well out of my electorate so I’m OK.” Noosa Today asked Mr Nicholls about some of the pressing local issues. If LNP were to win government, would works begin on the long-awaited Tewantin Bypass project? Mr Nicholls said he was disappointed the Labor Government was yet to carry out study work on the bypass. Mr Nicholls said the people of Noosa would see progress on the road project if the LNP were elected to government. “The first thing to do is complete a study, get the details around the costings and then you can make a decision,” he said. “The residents of Noosa are entitled to feel they are being ignored by the government so far as the bypass road is concerned.” On average, police attend one domestic violence (DV) incident a week. What is the LNP doing to tackle DV? Mr Nicholls said the LNP has a five-point plan designed to tackle the growing rates of DV throughout the state and better protect victims. The LNP has introduced new laws into State Parliament through a Private Member’s Bill that includes reforms such as reversing the onus of proof for bail, creating a DV alert system, GPS monitoring for high-risk offenders and immediate appeal rights against bail. “We hope we get the full support of everyone in making those changes law,” he said. “They are good, sensible changes.” Mr Nicholls said many of the reforms were already 18 NOOSA TODAY

in place in other states throughout Australia and it was time for Queensland to catch up and help better protect victims. Mr Nicholls denied the reforms could “vilify” alleged offenders and said the reforms would impact violent and high-risk offenders. “These are private people who have actually been charged on a serious domestic violence offence,” he said. “All DV is unacceptable. We see these extreme events are really a precursor to women losing their lives. Let’s protect people and then let’s look at the causes. “There may well be opportunities for counselling, anger courses and education courses to address the root causes, but the first thing to do is stop someone from losing their life. That has to be the first thing.” The Bail (Domestic Violence) and Another Act Amendment Bill 2017 hopes to make it harder for bail to be granted for alleged offenders charged with domestic violence-related crimes. The LNP Bill also allows for automatic notification when anyone subject to a domestic violence order is being considered for either bail or parole, giving time for victims to prepare mentally and physically for their potential release The Bill introduces GPS monitoring for high-risk offenders on bail and also provides an urgent review of a granted bail application to a higher court for police. Mr Nicholls said it was important to empower people to speak up when experiencing domestic violence. “We need to empower people to come out of the home and say this is happening to me. They need to report it to the police, they need to contact support groups,” he said. “They need to seek help and people should feel confident they have the service and they will be protected. There won’t be retribution and these laws will help deal with that.” If you or anyone you know is suffering domestic violence, help is available. Phone DV Connect on 1800 811 811 or Life Line on 13 11 14. What if the LNP doesn’t form government? What

assurances can you give Noosa residents that their needs will be heard in parliament? “What we do know and what I can tell you is Glen is ferocious in terms of advocating for Noosa,” he said. “Noosa needs a strong advocate who lives in and is passionate about the area who can actually drive change and can work to get the outcomes we want here. “But, really to get things happening in Noosa, you need an LNP Government. That’s the ideal way of doing it.” ●

ONE NATION GETS OUR ELMES FIRED UP While touring the Brite Side recycling facility in Doonan last Thursday (23 February) as part of Mr Nicholls’ visit to Noosa, Member for Noosa Glen Elmes let rip at the One Nation Party, calling it a cult and its followers “discontented rejects”. When asked if Mr Elmes saw One Nation as a threat in the coming election, Mr Elmes fired back. “Number one, One Nation is not a political party, it’s a cult. And every discontented reject from other groups and organisations and political parties seem to flock to the banner ... and there’s Pauline there and they just worship the throne upon which she sits. “But it’s a cult, there’s no policies other than people coming out and having little thought bubbes and talking about whatever is the subject of today’s news.” Local media reports state former LNP member and now leader of the Queensland One Nation Party Steve Dickson suggested Mr Elmes takes a good, hard look in the mirror. “I think people that speak like that really need to take a really long, deep breath, have a look in the mirror and just look at themselves,” he said. noosatoday.com.au

RON LANE’S PEOPLE

RON LANE

David and wife Jenny made a huge contribution to the Nippers movement locally. The Noosa Heads Nippers Under 6s are preparing to complete their first year. Nippers across the coast resumes September 2017.

TRIBUTE TO A RESPECTED MENTOR The souls of good men will always linger after they have departed, if in their place, stands their sons and daughters; young people of great character. So be it for David Glassock who last week passed away leaving a great family: wife Jenny, children Darcy, Archie, Harry, Maggie and Joey. Dave’s family was also our family for over the years all members were actively involved in the daily life of the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club, some more so than others, but all making their contribution to not only our club but others within our community. Within the boundaries of our club, the respect that Dave had speaks volumes for the character of the man, for in the sometimes rough and tumble world of surf club life, respect is something that men earn - it is never just given. Perhaps, the greatest factor of David’s time with us was that his contribution was right across the board - not just restricted to one area. This also applied to wife Jenny for both made major contributions to the Noosa Nippers the Seahorse Nippers and still found the time to fulfill their duties as patrolling members on Noosa’s Main Beach; and in some instances as patrol captains. For Dave his outstanding work had to be in the area of youth for as he said to me on several instances, “Laney the kids are our future, and we must keep that in mind.’’ It came as no surprise that after becoming involved in the Noosa Nippers (Junior Activities) he eventually in 2011/’12, put his hand up to become their director; a post he was to hold for four consecutive years. In his earlier times, he had worked as an age manager and coach; thus- together with his experience as a patrolman, he took office with a good background, but above a firm belief in the youth of today. It was during this time that David submitted a format regarding the Nipper movement that was quickly accepted at high level and circulated. When discussing the concept a branch official described it as one of the most progressive he had seen: as Dave said “ ... we must look after the kids” 20 NOOSA TODAY

“DESPITE THEIR YOUTH, THEIR HANDSHAKE WAS FIRM AND THEIR EYE CONTACT WAS BEYOND THEIR YEARS … IT WAS OBVIOUS TO ME THAT THESE WERE DEFINITELY - THE SONS OF DAVID GLASSOCK…” With the formation of the Seahorse Nippers becoming a reality, it was only natural that both David and Jenny would contribute; and contribute they did. Steve Mawby founder of the Seahorse Nippers said, “Dave and Jenny where amongst the first to come forward. Also when our program took off, we visited North Burleigh to help them get started, and David came along to help and brought his whole family; but that was Dave anything to help.” However, it is not only in lifesaving that Dave has left his mark, for within the walls of Dolphins Rugby Club, David was also held in high regard. Last Friday afternoon at the Junior Dolphins Rugby sign on, club president Donald McKill, in his welcome address, spoke of David’s outstanding contribution, in particular his coaching of the young. Another example of his dedication to the youth was his work as a member of the staff at St Teresas Catholic College, where his input was never ending. As the family grew and they became part of the patrol roster, we were conscious of these well-mannered young boys, boys who had the attitude of young men. Despite their youth, their handshake was firm and their eye contact was beyond their years. It was obvious to me that these were definitely - the sons of David Glassock. David is gone, but while there is youth in our club and indeed our community- he will never ever be forgotten. Rest in Peace my friend Rest in Peace. ●

OPINION

Post your letters to: 36 Mary St, Noosaville, 4566 or email: newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au

JUST THE FACTS I feel it necessary to clarify some facts for those in our community who suffer from “knee-jerk“ reactions whenever a question is asked about certain people in Noosa. These “knee-jerkers“ seem to suffer from a case of double standards whenever anyone criticises Noosa Council, or (heaven forbid) Mayor Tony Wellington.

We live in a democracy. One of the basic tenets of that institution is the right for the people to hold their elected representatives to account, and to question their actions, when it is deemed appropriate. Chris Hindmarsh inferred that a letter writer (Dom Massoni), may have been part of a “co-ordinated effort“ asking vexatious questions regarding Mayor Wellington’s investigation by police on behalf of “a candidate whose war chest at that election was largely donated by property developers.“ Julia Walkden referred to queries about the investigation as “smear campaigns“. Really? The media reported a police investigation into a public figure elected to office in Noosa, but if people ask questions about it then it is a “smear campaign“ and a “co-ordinated effort against our democratically elected mayor“. No-one has accused the mayor of any wrongdoing in the media, or any other public forum. The CCC, not the letter-writers in our local newspapers, have decided that the allegations (whatever they are) deserve investigation. That is not a smear campaign - that is a fact. I wonder if another candidate had been elected mayor, would these same evangelical supporters be supporting the “democratically elected mayor“, or would they be baying for blood? I understand people supporting a candidate of their choice, but misrepresentation of facts and attempting to discredit others is hardly democracy. Ken Coleman, Tewantin.

LITANY OF DELAYS I’d like to remind ratepayers of another council failure. At the Services and Organisation Committee Meeting held on 7 February, item 18 was Noosa Council Traffic Advisory and Speed Management Committee - December 2016. Of the 13 items discussed at last year’s December meeting, only two have been finalised. Some notable recommendations delayed include: · 15/5/14 New signage and restrictions for Black Mountain Range Road. · 5/3/15 Revised Sunday traffic plan for Noosa Farmers Market. · 30/11/15 Options to Improve traffic safety in Noosa Hill Precinct. · 3/3/16 Improvements to Intersection of

WEATHER OR NOT Responding to Bruce Hallett and Joy Ringrose (Noosa Today 23 February). We are told, incessantly, that man’s use of hydrocarbon fuels will cause climate catastrophe, with more droughts, heatwaves, bushfires, floods, cyclones, super-storms and “weird” weather. Why then would the pro-climate change lobby and Greens compound these claimed risks by pushing weather-dependent energy of wind, solar or hydro? During heatwaves on sultry summer afternoons, wind turbines overheat and start bushfires. Wind turbines fail when our cold rooms, fridges and airconditioners need them most. In a gale, turbines switch off to avoid damage; in still air they sit idle. Idle and failed wind turbines don’t charge batteries. On cold still winter nights solar will produce zero power; solar panels shut down every night; their output varies even when the sun shines; they are blotted out by rain, clouds or dust; and are smashed by hailstones. When solar panels produce zero power they don’t charge batteries. Even mighty hydro-power will fail if we suffer the never-ending Flannery predictions. Empty dams and idle hydro-power plants don’t charge batteries. So if the proclimate change lobby and Greens are right and are faced with droughts, heatwaves, bushfires, floods, cyclones, super-storms and “weird” weather we cannot rely on weather-

Thursday, 2 March, 2017

dependent energy. Makes me wonder how the South Australian wind-powered submarines are going to fare under water? Stick to reliable hydro-carbons - coal, oil and gas, they will produce electricity and they will charge your batteries, weather or not. Colin Bond, Tewantin.

BLOW-INS In relation to Mark and Jan Rose of Cooroy (Noosa Today, 23 February) complaining letter, if you are so unhappy with the state of things in the Noosa Shire, please go back into your holes, from wherever you came from. You have done nothing but complain and criticise, and I think you are reasonably new blow-ins, I could be wrong, and perhaps you were not here when we fought to have the old Noosa Council restored (with all its old conservative ideas that the majority voted for), and new technology and advantages looked at, sometimes acted on, and others discarded. They state that “Noosa is not great the way it is“, and by having lots more retail shops, closed shops etc, things could be a lot better. Perhaps they are not up to date with what the council is allowed to actually do, and it is not the domain of another entity. Long live Noosa. Sally Hepworth, Noosaville.

WASHING UP The wash-up of “clean coal” means that taxpayers will become the kitchen hands that do all the heavy lifting. Margaret Wilkie, Peregian Beach.

CCC and then the Queensland police service, was, as expected, not taken too well by some of Mr Wellington’s supporters ... tough luck! The only way the rumours and innuendo will cease in Noosa about Mr Wellington’s alleged activities, is for Mr Wellington to call on a press conference, and make a public statement about his innocence. Then, and only then will the rumours stop, and we can all wait patiently for the investigation’s results. Dom Massoni, Verrierdale.

THE AGENT’S VIEW …

WELCOME TO PARADISE

Richardson and Wrench Noosa sales agent Rory Williamson says he has noticed an influx in the number of young families making the move from southern states to Noosa.

A NEW wave of migrants are on their way to Noosa, according to local sales agents who are reporting an influx in cashed-up young families wanting their share of paradise. Richardson and Wrench Noosa sales agent Rory Williamson said he has noticed many young families making the move to Noosa, instead of retirees from Melbourne or Sydney. “I’m noticing a lot of young families, more than usual, are coming up from Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne looking for property,” he said. Rory said many of the buyers are career-minded professionals with young families looking to relocate to Noosa to raise their children in paradise. “The families are buying up fourbedroom renovators with a pool and an ocean glimpse for the same price as a tiny Bondi studio apartment,” he said. “Due to the extreme prices down south, the migration is in full swing. The demographic of Noosa Shire is seriously changing; it’s no longer a place for the retirees. It’s really affecting our real estate market in the $600,000 to $1.2 million bracket, too.” Rory said the cost of city living and the high-price real estate market means many who are living in the city aren’t able to transition to a free-standing home. “The price difference is just too huge,” he said. “For example, you could sell a Bondi apartment for $1 million, but to then

“THEY’RE ALSO REALISING THAT THE LIFESTYLE HERE IS FAR SUPERIOR COMPARED TO MOST OF AUSTRALIA. THAT’S A VERY TEMPTING COMBINATION…” upgrade and buy a free-standing house in the same suburb it’s about $4 million.” Rory said instead, places like Byron Bay and Noosa are winning more buyers as they see the markets as a genuine option. “It feels like 10 years ago city people in that age bracket toyed with the idea of a sea change, but things have changed, this generation are actually doing it in large numbers,” he said. “And Noosa seems to be a hotspot for this migration. Byron doesn’t have the infrastructure we have in Noosa, it’s more of a transient place; people come and go. The range of quality schools in the Sunshine Coast is far better too. It’s a big drawcard for young families.” Rory said a lack of work and career opportunities may put off some buyers from migrating to Noosa, but with so many people now working remotely and online, it doesn’t have to be a factor anymore. “People are working remotely, so many people can now earn a living from their laptop. Many are starting businesses or completely changing careers. I even know a few who have kept their jobs down south, they fly

down for two to three days a week then work from home on the Sunshine Coast for the rest of the week,” he said. “Qantas has daily flights, so you can have breakfast with the family, work in Sydney for the day and be home for dinner.” Looking to the coming year, Rory said the Sunshine Coast and Noosa were growing fast and the window of opportunity will soon close. “I believe prices in the Noosa Shire and surrounding areas will rise sharply in that $600,000 to $1.2 million range as they did five years ago in Sydney and Melbourne,” he said. “I believe there is an opportunity right now, but it won’t be here in three years. People are catching on that property on the Sunshine Coast is undervalued when compared to the rest of Australia. “They’re also realising that the lifestyle here is far superior compared to most of Australia. That’s a very tempting combination. Rory has predicted a great 10 years of growth for the Sunshine Coast. “Not just with property but also an exciting new dynamic of demographics, it could give the place a whole new feel,” he said. ●

Offering you a different real estate experience begins with being real. If you’re looking for someone to help you sell or buy property you’ll quickly get used to hearing words like, ‘trust’, ‘passion’, ‘integrity’, ‘reputation’, and ‘commitment’. At Star we treat you like a person... not a prospect. So we talk with you in a straightforward, meaningful way... not pitches we’ve rehearsed or memorised from a sales seminar. We don’t try and pretend there’s something magical NS ZXNSL YMJ NSYJWSJY YT ąSI GZ^JWX or work out prices of properties in your area. And we don’t have a special formula for signing you up... and then talking you down. Selling property effectively takes hard work. It takes experience, skill and aptitude. People who don’t have what it takes fall back on sounding like real estate agents. Our clients prefer real estate agents who sound like people.

NOOSA TODAY 31

MORTGAGE DEMAND

SOUTHERN STATES HAVE LION’S SHARE MORTGAGE demand has surged in Melbourne and Sydney, according to the latest data from CoreLogic. CoreLogic’s Cameron Kusher said NSW and Victoria now account for a historically high proportion of national mortgage demand that continues to drive dwelling values higher across the two cities when compared with other regions such as Brisbane. “The current housing market growth phase has really been all about Sydney and Melbourne. When you look at dwelling value growth, increases have been substantially higher in Sydney and Melbourne than in all other capital cities,” he said. “At the same time, demand for mortgages has surged across NSW and Vic (both of which are proxies for Sydney and Melbourne) while it has barely increased across the remaining states and territories.” Mr Kusher said the growth phase started in about June 2012 with a value rise of 21 per cent in Sydney and Melbourne only. But, this isn’t bad news for other regions in Australia with Mr Kusher pointing to a number of factors contributing to these specific growth areas. “The rise in values has been supported by low interest rates and availability of mortgage finance however, other factors such as localised economic performance, population growth and foreign demand have driven the

Demand for home finance in Sydney and Melbourne is pushing up prices, according to the latest data. much stronger growth in Sydney and Melbourne than across the other capital cities,” he said.

CoreLogic data for December 2016 shows the mortgage finance across the states and territories as $14.5 billion

in NSW, $9.6 billion in Vic, $5.1 billion in Qld, $1.6 billion in SA, $2.7 billion in WA, $0.3 billion in Tas, $0.2 billion in NT and $0.7 billion in ACT. Over the month, NSW (41.8 per cent) and Vic (27.7 per cent) accounted for a combined 69.5 per cent of the value of all housing finance commitments which was an historic high. In June 2012 when the current growth phase commenced, 33.6 per cent of housing finance commitments were in NSW and 27.1 per cent were in Vic. Mr Kusher said further data shows just how concentrated mortgage demand nationally is currently in NSW and Vic. “With the demand focused so much on those two states, it’s no wonder values in Sydney and Melbourne have increased so much more than in the other capital cities,” he said. “While steps have been made to cool mortgage demand, particularly from investors in Sydney and Melbourne, the data points to the fact that demand remains unquestionably strong. “With interest rates remaining at close to historic lows, it is clear that further changes will be required in order to slow mortgage demand and dampen the increases in dwelling valuesbeing experienced in Sydney and Melbourne.” ●

GORDON MACDONALD

SIGNED, SEALED AND DELIVERED

DAVID BERNS REAL ESTATE IS THE PREMIER AGENCY REPRESENTING MANY OF NOOSA AND THE HINTERLAND’S SPECTACULAR PROPERTIES.

By Gordon Macdonald, Auctioneer and Founder Of The Auction Group SUPER Saturday has recorded the second-highest volume of auctions across all capital cities. Despite the increased in volume, every capital city reported a higher clearance rate when compared to the same period a year ago, according to Corelogic. We believe the combination of lower than average stock levels and demand from the low interest rate environment is fuelling property markets. With our Sunshine Coast auction clearance at a very solid 71 per cent, it’s fair to assume we are experiencing only a slightly diluted dynamic to that of our capital cities. The sold prior rate jumped considerably this week, which is another indication of the urgency in the market. Auction tips: If we can’t attend the auction, how do we sign the contract of sale? If the reserve form has been completed and signed correctly by all parties on the title beforehand, the auctioneer is legally allowed to sign on your behalf. Unless otherwise stated, the standard conditions of sale by public auction for real property in Queensland generally include a clause that states: “The seller and the buyer agree to sign all documents and do everything else necessary to transfer the property to the buyer. The seller and the buyer each appoint the auctioneer their agent to sign the Contract of Sale on their behalf. This appointment is nonrevocable”. ●

JUST THE TICKET FOR A WINNING LIFESTYLE LOCATED just 100m from the beach and only moments from charming cafes and funky restaurants, the latest Endeavour Foundation prize home is a coastal dream come true. One lucky winner will be able to call this $1.1 million resort-style property home for the cost of just a $10 ticket. This oasis for families and serious surfers alike is the first prize in the Beachfront Lifestyle Lottery and is located within a short drive of the Sunshine Coast’s hot-spots. Endeavour Foundation executive general manager of supporter enterprises Andrew Thomas said every ticket sold brought increased independence within the reach of people with a disability. “Our lotteries enable Endeavour Foundation to work together with people with a disability to create real possibilities for a fulfilling life - at home, at work, and in the community. With a focus on individual goals we can help people to achieve outcomes that genuinely enhance their lives,” he said. But, with a home like this up for grabs, there’s one more person whose life will be changed forever - the lucky ticket holder. Whether a new holiday abode or permanent beachside home, this exceptional property is destined to bring a little more sunshine into your world. Interior designer Carole Hastie described the home as being “fitted out like a five-star resort”. “The house is surrounded by lush tropical gardens, the furniture is all high end, the pool is private, and the high ceilings are awe-inspiring. It’s like being on a dream holiday every day,” she said. At one end of the property is a large plunge pool with rock face water feature, overlooked by a covered gazebo complete with luxury barbecue kitchen. At the other end, take your ease in a courtyard lounge, complete with fire pit. This fabulous three-bedroom, twobathroom property is now open for viewing at 63 Mudjimba Esplanade, Mudjimba. WORLD’S LARGEST SPORTING EVENTS ON THE WAY BY TOURISM NOOSA CEO DAMIEN MASSINGHAM This weekend Noosa plays host to the world’s biggest surfing event, the Noosa Festival of Surfing which will see competitors from across the board visit Noosa for this great festival. STONES SATISFACTION BY HOLLIE HARRIS The Stones Experience is coming to Noosa and fans from 18 to 80 will have to man up. Recreating the songs that Stones fans know and love, the band combines about 150 years of musical experience between the five guys. Not just another tribute show, these accomplished musicians came together over a mutual love of all things Rolling Stones. Their talent and devotion is obvious and makes for a genuine performance which is credible and believable. They’ve performed to audiences with up to 8000 people at the Pan Pacific Games, corporate conferences, festivals, clubs and hotels in Queensland, New South Wales and Tasmania. Now they are making their way to Noosa to perform on an ocean front stage at the Noosa Surfie. With songs such as Angie, Brown Sugar, Harlem Shuffle, Satisfaction, Start Me Up and Jumping Jack Flash the list of hits just keeps on coming. Strutting out in the manner the world has become accustomed is John van Zyl, but audience members may need to look twice to realise it’s not Mick Jagger. His voice and appearance is so deceiving and the rest of the band are spot on with their moves. This has been touted as one of the best Rolling Stones tribute bands around. Don’t miss them live this Saturday 4 March at the Noosa Surf Club on Hastings Street. Doors Open 9pm and tickets are only $15 pre-sale or $20 on the night. ●

The North Water by Ian Maguire A 19th century whaling ship sets sail for the Arctic with a killer aboard in this dark, sharp and highly original tale that grips like a thriller. Behold the man - stinking, drunk and brutal. Henry Drax is a harpooner on the Volunteer, a Yorkshire whaler bound for the rich hunting waters of the arctic circle. Also aboard for the first time is Patrick Sumner, an ex-army surgeon with a shattered reputation, no money, and no better option than to sail as the ship’s medic on this violent, filthy and ill-fated voyage. With savage, unstoppable momentum and the blackest wit, The North Water weaves a superlative story of humanity under the most extreme conditions. ●

Blackstar by David Bowie Blackstar, the 25th and final studio album by British musician David Bowie. The album was largely recorded in secret between The Magic Shop and Human Worldwide Studios in New York City with Bowie’s longtime co-producer Tony Visconti and a group of local jazz musicians. Two days after its release, Bowie died of liver cancer. His illness had not been revealed to the public until then. Co-producer Visconti described the album as Bowie’s intended swansong and a “parting gift“ for his fans before his death. Blackstar has been touted as the most extreme album of Bowie’s entire career and is as far as he’d strayed from pop.●

Gold (M) Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Edgar Ramirez, Bryce Dallas Howard It’s a shallow plastic money trench, where brave men die like dogs. That’s how gonzo legend Hunter S. Thompson described the music industry ... but if “Gold“ is any indication, then it’s equally applicable to gold mining. McConaughey slums it as Kenny Wells, a sweaty creep with a comb-over who dresses his greed up as vision. His sad compulsion for cash leads him to Suharto’s Indonesia, where he tries to strip-mine the jungle for some gold. Sadly for Kenny, gold-loving swine flock to birds of a feather. American dream? More like the American nightmare. ●

SLOW BURN OF HOT FOODIE BY HOLLIE HARRIS Slow Food is a global, grassroots organisation with supporters in 150 countries around the world who are linking the pleasure of good food with a commitment to their community and the environment. Slow Food held their first breakfast meeting for 2017 at Noosa Marina (Wine Bar) with the very funny and warm guest speaker Cecilia “CC Diaz-Petersen, who is living her food dream. By using what begins in the fertile ground of a small 50 acres at the Woolooga property, 45 kms north-west of Gympie, CC is adding flavour to the foodie world with her mouth-watering range of gourmet homemade foods. CC’s heart-warming and often hilarious stories had the audience hanging on her every word. She recalled a time before preservatives and artificial flavourings and colourings - when food went straight from the garden to the pot to the plate. More than 70 per cent of the produce that goes into the products is grown at the Petersen’s Farm where she and her husband live. From the purpose-built farm kitchen, CC produces jar upon jar of handmade pickles, relishes, chutneys, jams and hot sauces every week. By using what begins in the fertile ground of a small Woolooga property, 45km West of Gympie Cecilia “CC Diaz-Petersen is adding to the foodie world with her mouth-watering range of fine foods. CC’s Kitchen specialises in rosella products made from rosella fruit grown on the farm. Syrups, jams, dried rosella flowers as well as fresh fruit are available for purchase among CC’s vast range direct from the farm, by mail order or from many of the markets and stores that stocks CC’s products. Slow Food stands at the crossroads of ecology and gastronomy, ethics and pleasure. It opposes the standardisation of taste and culture. They believe that everyone has a fundamental right to the pleasure of good food and consequently the responsibility to protect the heritage of food, tradition and culture that make this pleasure possible. The association believes in the concept of neo-gastronomy - recognition of the strong connections between plate, planet, people and culture. Slow Food envisions a world in which all people can access and enjoy food that is

WARM WELCOME ON A PLATE

Sirocco Noosa ● 2/257 Gympie Terrace, Noosaville ● 5455 6688 Sirocco Noosa offers a delicious menu inspired by the lands in which the Sirocco wind flows, from Africa through to the Mediterranean.

The Vibe: Laid-back dining in one of Noosaville’s most beautiful locations with stunning views right over the Noosa River. The Decor: Sirocco’s decor stays true to the Moroccan-inspired theme with lots of orange and earthy tones. The Drink: Impressive drinks list with everything from craft beers to seasonally selected wines.

BY JOLENE OGLE Sirocco Noosa has all the hallmarks of a long-standing, successful Noosa restaurant. The staff are exceptionally friendly, the food is exquisite, the service superb and the views are breath-taking. Here, you can order seared cuttlefish with a romesco sauce with a seasonally matched wine, which will be delivered to your table promptly by a smiling waitress. You can dine on king prawn and scallop linguini served with a creamy white wine and saffron sauce, while looking out to the Noosa River where you can watch people float by on their stand-up paddle board. Sirocco’s seasonal menu is inspired by the lands in which the Sirocco wind flows, from

Africa through to the Mediterranean. The flavoursome dishes are created using fresh, local ingredients, organic milk and freerange eggs. At Sirocco, the service will be prompt, the food will be scrumptious and lovingly created with the Moroccan-inspired tastes the restaurant has become known for, and you will fall in love with those views. Yes, Sirocco Noosa has all the best ingredients to be known as one of Noosaville’s dining gems; and rightly so. But, what sets Sirocco apart from the large choice of dining options along Gympie Terrace is the homely feel the staff and owners create. Families are welcome here. Babies are not a burden, but are cherished.

The Crowd: Sirocco is the perfect place to gather friends for a long Sunday lunch.

Vegetarians are very much catered for, along with those who prefer gluten-free. KEEP YOUR HAIR UP THERE BY HOLLIE HARRIS Noosa hair expert Louise Turton has been nominated for The Telstra Business Woman of the Year 2017 and the Queensland Training Awards 2017 so this week, I couldn’t resist heading along to Surrender Dorothy hair salon in Noosaville to see what all the fuss was about. Keeping my hair healthy and strong is a constant challenge. As a surfer, a red head and a time-poor working mum of two, I really notice my tresses have become more like messes. Scraping my hair into a quick ponytail on the way into a school concert and colouring from the box to look fresh for a 6am news story has caused even more damage to my sun damaged curls and so I asked Louise what I could do to breathe some life back into to my look. Louise handed me over to 27-yearold creative genius Monty Thomas who made me feel so comfortable and excited about what was about to happen. He was passionate about the products they use in the salon as he began to explain a little more about them. “Shimmer shine contains particles of light reflective glitter which give your hair that super shiny look. We use Kevin Murphy products which are like skincare for your hair. The products from their range are really unique and special. They are organic, paraben free and sustainable with incredibly effective ingredients from nature,” Monty said. So I indulged in a luscious wash and blow dry which left my hair far more silky and beautiful than I thought possible from a blow dry. All the products Monty used on my hair smelled delicious and felt like butter, so I looked into Kevin Murphy products a little more. The moisturisers are from Mango butter and Murumuru butter which smooth the cuticles and soften the hair. Extracts from Peruvian bark, baobab, bamboo and orange blossom infuse the hair with weightless moisture. Antioxidants from Kakadu plum, orchid, lotus flower and desert lime reduce breakage and repair chemical damage naturally. No wonder my hair was coming back to life in front of my eyes. “We want to know about your hair. We look at your eye colour, skin tone, make-up, natural hair colour plus we find out your lifestyle and the time you spend on your hair at home. We really listen to your needs and plus we deliver great quality results so you are happy,” Monty said. “I gave you a condensed deep treatment which is really intense and is exclusive to the salon. It is really like giving your hair a huge drink - your hair was super dry which can make the frizz come out, so you will notice the moisture will be boosted for a few weeks,” he said. Once my hair was like new, we went to work on my face. Monty took his time teaching me all the tricks of the trade to applying flawless make-up with Napoleon Perdis products. Monty moonlights as a drag artist who knows his way around a make-up brush more than most people, this make-up session was worth its weight in gold. I learned how to contour and choose colours to suit my skin tone and techniques to slim my face and bring out my eye colour. After a short time in my vintage chair at what felt like an international salon, I emerged a new woman.

Thursday, 2 March, 2017

Within minutes of walking out of Surrender Dorothy somebody told me I looked “absolutely amazing.” That was the icing on the cake! Hair and makeup: Monty Thomas Right: Noosa Today’s Hollie Harris before heading to Surrender Dorothy Noosaville for a revamp.

Monty gave me a full education in applying all the tricks of the trade to my face. Gone was the salty surfie mum who’d been on the go since 5am making lunches, taxiing kids about and working to deadlines all day. While I’m proud to go natural and be me, my hair really deserved a treat and it was lots of fun. I left the salon with newfound

skills to maintain a better beauty regime at home and although I don’t need to glam up this much day-to-day, my hair is now much silkier (even after a couple of washes) and a few quick make-up tricks Monty taught me have made it into my morning routine to feel more fabulous during my busy days. ● noosatoday.com.au

CHOOSE A BUDDY TO HELP STAY ON TRACK BY TYRONE SAUL OF YOU FIRST PT Dread exercise? Then choose a friend to do it with. According to the Department of preventative medicine at the University of Southern California, people enjoy physical activity more when they’re with others. In addition to being happier when exercising with friends, the study found that retention was kept over longer periods of time. People are more likely to maintain regular exercise and less likely to miss their workouts when they are committed to a friend. Tips for choosing the right partner: 1. Boost your workout - Choose someone you perceive to have a higher level of fitness than yourself, this can promote a higher level of intensity during the session, and keep you motivated when you would otherwise give up. 2. Choose reliable fitness buddies - This will assist in improving your retention rates to exercise and give you the confidence that you can rely on your partner to be by your side at an agreed time. 3. Set goals together - This is particularly motivating when you can see a tangible improvement towards a goal that you and your partner have set for yourselves. 4. Keep yourself and your partner accountable - One of the greatest benefits of working out with someone is the sense of accountability, keeping yourself and your partner accountable to the goal will allow you to maintain a positive framework for maintaining momentum toward achieving the desired outcome. 5. Reward yourselves - When the time comes that you have achieved a tangible goal, make sure to set out your rewards as well. Make sure the reward is not counter-productive to the goal (eg: I can have three glasses of wine and two chocolates for working out today). Set a health-related goal that might include a massage or healthy meal out with your partner. With 2017 well underway, having direction in what you want to achieve with your fitness health and wellbeing may simply be a case of choosing the right person or people to help boost a healthier YOU in 2017. ● noosatoday.com.au

CAUSES TO RUN, FOR THE FUN OF IT Over 400 students, families and community members of all ages got colourful for a good cause on Friday 17 February at the annual St Andrew’s Anglican College Charity Fun Run. This year the ‘Rainbow Run’, organised by Year 12 Prefects, involved colour stations as well as a slip ‘n’ slide to cool down at the end. Registrations from this event raised $2580, with all proceeds going to the college’s partnership with Cambodian-based not-for-profit organisation, RawImpact. College Head of Global Learning Mr Tim Barrett said the project aimed to help support and educate marginalised Khmer people by building bamboo housing and sustainable gardens, providing much-needed shelter, food and an income source. “Each September, the college sends over a team of

students and staff to work alongside local families and qualified tradespeople who also volunteer their time and skills,” Mr Barrett said. “While St Andrew’s is committed to serving our local community on a weekly basis through our ‘St Andrew’s Serves’ program, it is also great that we have a global focus so that our students can appreciate how fortunate we are to live in a country like Australia.” Mr Barrett said the college was very conscious to ensure the global projects in both Cambodia and Thailand were done in partnerships with local communities and were directed by those have training and experience in sustainable development. “We are really thankful for the support of the college community, who allow us to really make a difference to the lives of some of the world’s poorest people,” he said. ● Thursday, 2 March, 2017

The recent rains over the past week will certainly get those muddies moving, set your pot in the deeper sections of the water where there will be more saline water. The fresh water will also have an effect on the bait fish in the river, and if we get some decent rain, there will be a real movement of bait towards the mouth of the river. Areas like Woods Bay and the river mouth will really start to fire with predatory fish feeding on the confused bait. Trevally have been in good numbers in the river with a couple of good diamond trevally taken first thing in the morning on poppers. The rivermouth rocks have been fishing well with some quality fish taken including bream, trevally, small jew, tailor and mangrove jacks, fishing the tides has been the key and the evening tide has been perfect if you can cope with the wind. Flathead have also been in great numbers in the river over the last week, with some great fish taken on soft plastics, brighter colours seem to be working the best, cast upstream on the run-out tide and work the plastic along the bottom over the edges of small drop off, and you are sure to tangle with a flattie. Whiting continue to be taken around the frying pan, the dog beach, Weyba Creek and along Gympie Terrace. Worms and yabbies are still the prime baits. For the mums and dads that are constantly baiting hooks, try using thin strips of squid, this is a great bait for the kids as it will stay on a little longer. On the Offshore scene, things were a little average with the wind being up for most of last weekend. It seemed that we are getting those annoying breezes around the 15 knot range that keeps a lot of smaller boats on the trailer.

Monday’s rain finally broke a record 30 days of temperatures over 30 degrees. While the remainder of the week has brought some much-needed deluges to the region, things will start to warm up again for one last hit of heat. Thursday: A top temperature of 29 degrees with an 80 per cent chance of rain, most likely to hit in the afternoon. There is just a chance of an afternoon storm.

For those that did brave the conditions, Laguna Bay was alive with baitfish on the incoming tide and some nice-sized long tail tuna were boated. Charter operators managed to get out on Saturday and got onto some great fish around Sunshine Reef, tusk fish, pearl perch and sweetlip all hit the decks and then they were lucky enough to come across a big patch of large Maori cod. If the weather calms down as expected, it will be on again with the hunt for those big pelagics that haunt the coastline at this time of the year. Over the last couple of years, there has been some monster Spanish landed in March, and this year should not be any different. On the beach, dart and whiting are the mainstays for most beach anglers, the odd large tailor has been taken from the Noosa North Shore, fishing the rocks at Noosa National Park and down towards Sunshine and Coolum has seen some good snapper taken. Big morning tides and an abundance of bait fish has also seen anglers tangling with some jelly bean Mack tuna. Down on the southern beaches, whiting have been in good numbers on the start of the run out tide, give Marcus and Peregian Beaches a go. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! ●

AROUND THE GROUNDS

ANDRE KICKS OFF THE MATCH BY BRIAN STOCKWELL NOOSA SOCCER With the ball hitting the back of the Woombye net twice in the first five minutes, it was clear what Noosa’s game plan was. While these two shots were both called back for narrow off-side plays, the momentum was maintained. Andre Jancevski was the first to find himself on-side with a one on one opportunity on the Woombye keeper and deftly opened the scoring shortly after. The goal was the culmination of a recurring series of events that was repeated for the majority of the match. Noosa’s midfield dominated the opposition, and initiated forward momentum as quickly as possible with two to three passes down the outside corridors, followed by a killer pass for the forwards to chase down. Here to improve his language skills at the local English school, centre midfielder Oriol Salter, from Barcelona, literally ran rings around his opponent with a signature move of turning away and circling 270 degrees around their backs to provide quality possession to his winger or an overlapping back. While Woombye was struggling to match the pace and skill of the Noosa side it took only one errant pass to put them on goal. Receiving the ball in a congested box their striker turned nicely to slam home the equaliser only a few moments later. It was a driving run by brother Chris that set Andre Jancevski up for his second goal before half time. Andre’s positioning off the ball, and consummate balance over it, frequently made the Woombye backs appear ordinary. The Lions started the second stanza the same as the first with numerous attacking forays being frustrated by a final offside play. With a few different starters in the side to last week, Noosa’s combinations were firing. When Matt Thompson scored the third goal after a well-executed free kick, it looked like the match would go the same way as the Reserve Grade, where Noosa had a

POMONA BOWLS Ladies Wednesday social - good to see so many of the club’s ladies on the green. Congratulations to winners Jocelyn Rabjohns and Bettina Winkler. Thursday mixed social - winners on the night were Sharon Foale, Fiona Dewhirst and Greg Hodder. Looks as if Fiona is following in her mum and dad’s footsteps with her bowling ability increasing every week. Men’s Pairs semi-final - the washed-out match from last Sunday was played Thursday evening. Winners Rick Goulding and Bill Alford defeated Daryl Millar and Patrick Gray-Spence 21-17. The finals between Rick Goulding/Bill Alford against Don Mallett/Greg Hodder will be held Sunday 5 March commencing at 1pm. Friday Twilight bowls continue to attract keen bowlers and the winners were Daryl Millar and Glenn Patterson with runners-up Fay Beadnell and Frank Long. Great to see Fay back on the green. Jackpot not won and carries over. Hinterland Local League results: Pomona (at home) against Glasshouse Mountains. Unfortunately both Pomona Ladies teams went down losing 39 to 60 giving Glasshouse three points. Pairs of J Rabjohns/B Winkler lost 15-30; Triples team of S Millar/D Debus/D O’Neil lost 2430. The Men’s team had better results winning the game 80 to 74. Pairs of C Dewhirst/B Alford won 20-17; Pairs R Goulding/K Muir defeated 18-21; Triples D Mallett/G Johnson/P Gray-Spence won 28-22; Fours M Edwards/S Hands/B Andrews/B Schofield finished with a draw 14 each. The Men’s team gained 3.5 overall points score. Men’s Championship Fours first round will be held on Sunday 12 March at 1pm.

sustained period in front of goal in the 85th minute. After a series of corner kicks they managed to get their second, which was the last for the match - Noosa 3/Woombye 2. ●

Scary big surf at Nazare. Picture: Court esy WSL.

MEET THE SWELL CHASERS It takes about an hour and 20 minutes to fly from Maroochy Airport to Sydney, and in that time last Saturday I had three frothing phone messages from film-maker Tim Bonython. I listened to them as I walked through the terminal to the car rentals. “Ma-a-a-ate! It’s the swell of the century ... on a flight tonight ... gonna be (expletive deleted) epic, ma-a-a-a-ate!” I called Australia’s best known swell chaser right back, knowing what he was going to tell me. He was packing his cameras and flying out for Nazare, Portugal that night. But there was no need to worry. He would be back in time to join filmmaker Greg Huglin at the Shooting Monsters luncheon on Monday, 6 March as part of the Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing. Indeed, he expected to shoot some of the biggest monsters ever ridden and would edit a piece for the lunch on his laptop during the plane-ride home. I wished him a safe and productive trip and rang off. Before I’d finished renting a car he’d messaged me the reason for the rushed trip, and for his frothing - a swell map showing the biggest North Atlantic storm cell I’d ever seen.

This is what it’s like when you’re a serious swell chaser. The planets align, the map goes red and you’re off! Here in Noosa we get excited about a bit of green out in the Coral Sea. There we’re talking about a massive storm forming north of Greenland and creating mid-ocean waves of 150 feet or more, tapering down to a mere 80 to 90 feet as they crash into the rugged coast of Portugal between Porto and Lisbon, and finding a deep-water entry point at the picturesque fishing village of Nazare, an hour’s drive north of Portugal’s surfing centre, Peniche. I know the area well, having spent an entire summer in Peniche in 1973, and it always baffles me that Nazare has lately become famous as home to the biggest rideable waves in the world. We swam in the calm, chilly water of Praia do Norte (North Beach) but never saw a wave break there. I suppose that was a bit like tourists who look at Waimea Bay in mid-summer and don’t believe it gets huge in winter. This time of year it can be cold and miserable in Nazare, but Bonython is used to that. In January 2016, while other swell

chasers were tracking swells across the tropical Pacific, he was holed up at Nazare for a month, waiting for the biggest days for his long-awaited “Big Wave Project” film. And he was back there in December when Australia’s Jamie Mitchell won the inaugural Nazare Challenge, part of the WSL Big Wave Tour, in incredibly tricky 40foot waves, narrowly avoiding a potentially fatal two-wave hold-down. Just two months later, Mitchell is one of the surfers joining Bonython in Portugal in the hope of riding waves twice that big, and so creating history. I can’t wait to see what footage Tim brings home this time, and hopefully it will form a major part of his presentation, alongside Noosa’s own legendary swell chaser, Greg Huglin, at the luncheon at El Capitano next Monday. Tickets have been selling fast, but jump onto www.noosafestivalofsurfing.com/ shooting-monsters right now and you might still be lucky. But don’t come if you get vertigo!

cottage at Laguna Beach with fantastic views of the sun setting over Catalina Island. There wasn’t much surf at Laguna, but I used to like to walk down from our house to the Victoria Street beach access and watch the skim-boarders perform. Oh, I’d seen skimboarders in various parts of the world for years, but nothing like this! Victoria Street, as it turned out, was pretty much the skimboard capital of the world, and the locals ripped. I was back there a week or two ago, and they’re still ripping! Around about the time we came home from California, a guy named Austin Keen from Savannah, Georgia, who was raised on the pretty much surf-less waters of Tybee Island, had driven his 1975 BMW across America to join the Laguna skim crew. Within a couple of years he was the best of the best at Victoria Street, and in 2013 he was crowned world champion of skimboarding. The following year he was named “most influential athlete in wave sports”, next to Kelly Slater. Too much is never enough for Austin Keen, and in 2015 he decided to become the best in the world at wake-surfing. Guess what? He is. It’s in this latest guise that this incredible wave-rider is coming to the Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing, leading the Chaparral Wake-Surf Challenge, which will see champion surfers testing their skills riding top to bottom wake waves created by the Chaparral custom wake-surf boat out in Laguna Bay. But Austin will be spreading the love, and showcasing his skills throughout the festival. Finally, don’t forget the Festival’s “soft opening” on Friday afternoon, with Darren Mercer’s Noosa Surf Club ironman legends providing an exhibition, the Nippers strutting their stuff, and world champion body surfer Mark Cunningham from Hawaii leading a legends body bash. The beach bar will be open and the action starts at 4pm. ● noosatoday.com.au

BETWEEN THE FLAGS

RON LANE

GREAT ROWING BY NOOSA GIRLS Last weekend at Pacific Palms in NSW, the surf carnival was called the Battle of the Boats, and for the Noosa Ladies Under 19 boat crew, they finished with their colours flying high. At the end of two days of gut-wrenching rowing in flat surf, the girls finished the final in second place overall. To finish second is incredible but when you consider that they are basically still a novice crew of 16-year-olds, and had just completed a program that saw them contest eleven races in two days, these results are worthy of note. “One of the most pleasing aspects,” said Coach Mick Gardner, “is the respect that they are now receiving from other crews and remember, some of those are veterans and are amongst the best in Australia.” The Saturday program saw them row in three events in the Under 19 Division. Then the coach entered them in the Opens which saw them contest another four races. “The reason for this was purely experience; and it was indeed a great learning curve,” Gardner said. This gave the16-year-olds a total of seven races for the day, another three on Sunday and on making the final it gave them one more, making it four for the day - a total of eleven races over two days. However it was worth it as the Noosa girls finished in second place overall; and the girls who achieved this were Zoe McKill stroke, Sinead Hayes second stroke, Tayla

Noosa Under 19 boat crew: Zoe McKill, Sinead Hayes, Tayla Fox and Zali Kerr with coach Mick Gardner. Fox second bow and Zali Kerr bow. For our mates at Sunshine Beach, it was another quiet weekend - still plenty of people, but quiet. Their Nippers had their last weekend for the season, but what a year it has been. Once again Sunshine Nippers have shown that in the area of competition, they

are right up there with the best. With their continued success over the years, it again shows that above all the club must have a coaching panel that is not only good but very progressive - to continue on their winning ways in the Nippers a really good parent support group is essential, all happy and working together.

SURF’S UP

Well done to all concerned, well done Sunshine Beach! It is now some five years since the Noosa Seahorses Nippers, under the guidance of Steve and Nikki Mawby and Lorna Garden, first appeared on the scene. Unfortunately last week we lost one of the original pioneers in David Glassock. David passed away after a long illness, so to wife Jenny and family we are here for you, just a phone call away. Good news from the Alexandra Headlands Seahorses; last weekend they had some 45 members in attendance; their hard work has paid off. This is good news well done to all. In mid-March Noosa Seahorse representatives will travel to Bundaberg to help launch their program. Also, down south at Coogee Beach, good things are happening. On Sunday 19 February, Noosa’s Lorna Garden attended the launch of an Inclusion Program jointly run by Coogee and Autism Swim. This is yet another program to help those with special needs. When we receive positive results such as these it make us appreciate the incredible work that Steve, Nikki and Lorna and their support group did to get the whole thing started. Well done to all; one of the truly great achievements in the history of the Noosa Heads SLSC. ●

HOLLLIE HARRIS

SHARK SCARE A FALSE ALARM It was a very quiet start of the week for waves. Last week saw the best of it and these local longboarders made each wave count. Samuel Crookshanks, local surfer, well known for his longboard tricks, works at Noosa Longboards on Hastings Street, taken at Roses Cove last week. Julia Johnson, local, surfing her longboard for two years here in Noosa. There was a shark scare which had Julia paddling in, but then she had paddled back out again as the surf was too good - only a surfer will understand that move. A few rumours of the man in a grey suit circling (excuse the pun) last week which had many surfers picking their feet up out of the water, but a certain photo of a great white was a fake and a fin was a dolphin. There was one instance at Tea Tree of an alert, but much to onlookers’ surprise, the crowd of surfers didn’t budge. With wild and woolly surf on the opens and flat this week along the Noosa Points, it was a pretty average week for surf. This week things are looking a bit better. There is a gradual increase in swell size which should peak today reaching heights of 3ft on the open beaches and smaller sets coming through the points. It may be a good start to March with an active and sizeable period of surf on the cards next Sam Crookshanks last week. Photo: TITO MEDIA week. It has been a bit of a lull for surfers for a while with onshores for the northern beachies most days really limiting the options, so let’s hope the surfing gods shine on surfers so they can get a few sessions in before the Laguna Realty Noosa Festival of Surfing kicks off on Saturday. It’s the writer’s absoloute favourite event of the year - what a fantastic week of all things surfing and Noosa really comes alive. It really feels like a holiday in a surfing paradise....oh wait, it is! As difficult as it is to watch all those beautiful sets coming through and not be able to join in, (Not to mention the options are all chocka-block) spectating is almost just as good from the rocks, thank Julia Johnson flying at Noosa. Wait - what’s that shadow... goodness. Almost. ● 54 NOOSA TODAY

SPORT TODAY Some of the new “clubbies” at one of the training sessions.

GIRLS IN TRAINING FOR TRI EVENT Noosa’s first female-only triathlon coaching clinic has been a huge success, according to event organisers who have reported 25 new “clubbies”. Noosa Tri Club president Tim Rook said the overwhelming response to the training clinic has highlighted just how much demand there is for this type of activity. The Noosa Tri Club partnered with Multisports Consultants to deliver the

eight-week female only - and femalecoached - triathlon skill development program, followed by an eight-week online program. At the end of the program, the participants will take part in the club’s first ever Pink Tri training event on 2 April and a two-day Tri Camp in June. Tim said there has been a great demand for female-only training led by pro-athlete Jess Fleming.

“An overwhelming response has seen our club gain 25 new female members, some of whom have never ridden a bike on the road and most experiencing being ‘clipped into pedals’ for the first daunting time,” Tim said. Tim said the program has been made possible through a grant valued at $7400 from the Queensland Government designed to increase participation in sport.

Noosa Council also provided a $3000 grant to help the program get started. “The confidence that these women are gaining is terrific,” Tim said. “A lot of new skills and terminology being learnt and early starts with the group being split into two and training at either 5am or 6am to get their training completed before getting kids ready for school or off to work.” ●

BOXERS BRING HOME TASMAN CUP BY RON LANE Last weekend a team of four fighters from the Impact Boxing Academy Cooroy, plus coach Mark Evans, and ten from the Shamrock Club Maroochydore, travelled to the Pakuranga United Rugby Club in Auckland, New Zealand to take part in an Inter Club boxing tournament. Impact was represented by Luke Martin, Tyler Blizzard, Sam Cameron-Hands and Ella Boot. Held on Saturday night, Blizzard, Cameron-Hands and Boot scored wins with Martin being unlucky too lose on a split decision. “The standard of boxing was very good indeed,” Evans said. “Amongst the Kiwi club fighters there were National Champions as well as boxers who had contested the World Junior Championships in Europe in 2015.” For the Impact team there were two major stand outs. First was the naming of Tyler Blizzard as the winner of the Most Technical Boxer of the Tournament, and second Ella Boot’s win now gives her nine fights for nine wins. “Ella’s win was really good as we believe she lost the first round, but taking advice from our corner team, she recovered well to take the decision. Her ability to stay cool and noosatoday.com.au

GIRLS CAN BE PIRATES TOO Luke Martin, Ella Boot, Tyler Blizzard and Sam Cameron-Hands. not panic is her strong point. With Ella coming back the way she did it was probably the best performance of her career. We were really stoked,” Evans said. At the end of the tournament, the result was a win for the Aussie visitors by seven wins to six. This resulted in the Aussies being presented with the winner’s trophy the Tasman Cup.

Arriving home there was no rest. This weekend twelve members of the Impact Club will travel to Acacia Ridge in Brisbane to fight in the State Selection Trials with the winners then going on to fight for Queensland at the Australian Titles which will be held in Adelaide in April. We wish them well. ●

The Noosa Pirates girls rugby team is on the lookout for female players aged 12-17 years to play rugby league for 2017 season. The club is calling for all girls to come and try this fast growing sport, where all players can make new friends, get fit and have fun. Training will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5-6pm at the Cooroy footy fields. The club coaches are qualified and experienced and looking forward to teaching all players the skills of rugby league. The cost for the season is $150 and includes shirt, shorts and socks. Anyone interested can contact Jaymie Suares (girls’ football manager) on 0407 639 731 or email ndjrl@hotmail.com. ● Thursday, 2 March, 2017
