Calls are being made loud and clear for landowners to unite in the ongoing battle against the scourge of wild dogs in the region’s farming industry. With wild dogs costing the Australian economy more than $60 million every year, experts warn there is no room for complacency when dealing with the menace. A forum to be held at Freestone on 16 March where National Wild Dog co-ordinator Chris Mifsud will be a presenter - will be a rallying point for landowners in the mountain country east of Warwick, where wild dogs have a strong breeding foothold, including in national parks. Southern Downs Regional Council Local Laws Officer James Eastwell - who specialises in dog and feral animal management - is urging landowners in the Freestone, Goomburra and Maryvale districts to join forces, particularly when it comes to laying 1080 poison baits which are a key control measure. Wild dogs breeding in the largely inaccessible range country in those districts follow a wellworn path out of the mountains, heading across the ridgelines east of Warwick and venturing out to the traprock country to the west, where they are crippling the sheep industry. But dogs are also wreaking financial and emotional havoc for cattle producers across the region, with calf losses harder to keep a handle on than those of sheep and lambs. Calls are also growing louder for increased use of aerial 1080 baiting in national parks, where breeding pairs can easily produce six to 10 pups every year if left unchecked. James Eastwell told the Free Times he wanted to see “more interaction” between landowners and producers. Continued on Page 3

Old values hold up Casey’s tips
Arts Scene with Sue Keong “I don’t like to see the old stuff wasted,” George Monaghan said as we walked into his shed adorned with tools, large and small. There is an old Carbide 1880 light for a Penny Farthing pushbike or for on the side of a carriage, and an old-time engineering brace which used a ratchet to manually bore its own hole and then make a thread into metal. “Old Wattie Laws laid most of the gas main pipe for Warwick and used this tool to tap into the main line when someone wanted to be added,” George said. Old wrenches, cleverly made with cutting tools from 1775, a scythe and a handmade forge now operated by a vacuum cleaner with a Mother Potts iron and Tiddly iron that was heated on a stove before ironing clothes are among the many things George has collected. “Necessity is the mother of invention,” George said about a homemade drill press which was made partly from a Model T Ford differential and a shaft from the old Barnes Flour Mill which is siting in the corner of his shed. “Most of the collection is my Dad’s and Shirley’s (his wife) father.” George’s dad was a “pommy” and immigrated to Australia 1912 and as a lad humped his ‘Bluey’ from Adelaide through Broken Hill and Nindigully and settled finally on Alderman on Old Stanthorpe Road near Warwick. He met Shirley and built up a dairy farm to raise 12 children. In the early days he was a teamster using wagons and horses to work mostly on roads. Before WWII there was a settlement called Lord John Swamp on the flats near Wildash where George’s brother Jim started work in a cheese factory.
George will be in the main Doug Feez Pavilion during the 150th Warwick Show with a large display of tools, memorabilia and stories to tell.
George has a lifetime’s worth of historical gear in his collection. “My Pop’s brand was registered there,” George recalls. When the factory closed down Jim worked for a short while in the Warwick cheese factory and then moved on to the Malling Cheese Factory near Dalby to work. Starting work was easy for George. It was only three weeks out of school before George’s mother received a letter from now-foreman Jim asking that George start work as a cheese maker. “After a couple of years there it wasn’t my cup of tea, mucking around in curds and wey,” George said. He eventually joined his brother as a builder because it was difficult to get builders at that time, which was about 1948. Old dairies needed to be renovated and the fellow who owned the cheese factory owned about nine farms. During winter when there wasn’t much milk for the factory, the men would go out and work on the farms for him so he was able to keep all the
men employed throughout the year. Building dairies and cow bales and yards kept them very busy. “We couldn’t buy enough timber so my brother and I started a saw mill and cut cypress from private properties,” George said. “We would cut the log, bring it down to the sawmill, cut the timber, build the houses and by the time you finished the house you knew each bit of timber by its first name. “And you daren’t make a mistake or cut it wrong because you worked too flamin’ hard to get it,” he quipped. George went to the Gold Coast and got into the building game properly, met Shirley, and they moved to the Sunshine Coast to raise their family. In 1991 Shirley and George moved to Warwick and transferred to the local Lions Club. Volunteering at the Warwick Show with the Lions Club meant that it didn’t take long before George became an important part of the show team and especially in the Show’s Doug Feez
Pavilion display which George co-ordinates each year. “I would like to see more people come to the show - it’s a great opportunity for town and country to come together,” he said. “I’ve always volunteered right from when my children started school. It gives something back to the community, keeps you fit and you don’t go stagnant.” And he said that he is sorry to see his own work ethic is not being taken up by some people in the wider community. “It is disappointing to see people not wanting to work. You need a ready workforce so new industries can come to Warwick. “Manufacturing costs are cheaper here than what they would be in Brisbane. “A truss factory - I see new houses going up with trusses they bring up from the Gold Coast. We should be making them here. “The town has beautiful schools and boarding schools and it is sad for people to think ‘I’m not going to work so I may as well live on the coast then I can go surfing’.” But George said he is looking forward to his planned adventures. “I’ve travelled all over Queensland while working but I would like to go for a trip to Melbourne and see the Great Ocean Road.” George will be in the main Doug Feez Pavilion during the 150th Warwick Show with a large display of tools, memorabilia and stories to tell. Visitors call in and say hello, and they should be sure to ask about the Madison and Sons pipe wrench...

Report kept hidden By Jeremy Sollars The Southern Downs Regional Council has refused to make public a report from an investigation into complaints made against chief executive officer David Keenan and senior council managers. The council last week released a statement saying seven individual complaints had been “independently investigated” and none had been substantiated. While the statement emphasised that none of the complaints were in relation to the alleged bullying and intimidation of staff - issues reported on by the Free Times earlier this year - it did not specify who had lodged the complaints, nor did it provide any detail on the nature of the complaints. The Free Times asked the council to supply a copy of the report but was refused, with Mr Keenan advising this was not possible “as it includes details of interviews with staff and non-staff”. But Mr Keenan did advise that the investigation was conducted by Melbourne-based consultancy firm CT Management, which is a preferred supplier of management services to Queensland councils through the ‘Local Buy’ initiative of the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ), the state’s peak lobby group for local governments. CT Management has a head office in Melbourne - with one of its directors being former Victorian Premier Jeff Kennett - and has offices in Brisbane and Hobart. The council would also not disclose the identity of the investigator who had been engaged by CT Management, and it is not known if they
David Keenan. were an employee of the company or an outside contractor engaged on a one-off basis. The Free Times can however reveal that a previous assessor of separate complaints relating to mayor Tracy Dobie and Mr Keenan - which did not form part of the CT Management investigation - was Ray Burton, who is a co-member
along with Mr Keenan of the Local Government Managers Australia Queensland division, a body separate to the LGAQ and comprises senior local government managers and CEOs from across the state. Those separate complaints relating to Cr Dobie and Mr Keenan are understood to have been likewise found to be unsubstantiated.
In last week’s statement, Mr Keenan said in total there were “seven complaints lodged (against himself and senior council managers) none of which related to bullying or intimidation”. “As part of the investigation, staff were interviewed and non-staff members were also interviewed. Of the seven complaints, the independent investigator has determined that none have been substantiated,” Mr Keenan said. “Southern Downs Regional Council will continue to facilitate a workplace environment free of bullying and intimidation. “In recent staff meetings, employees have again been made aware of how to report bullying, harassment and other workplace issues. “Additionally, staff were made aware of the use of Public Interest Disclosures and the role unions can have in reporting workplace issues, as well as the availability of the Employee Assistance Program should staff be experiencing personal issues. “There is a clear expectation from myself and management that council staff will work and be productive in the duties and roles they are employed to undertake. “The investigation has taken up significant financial and human resources. “It is disappointing that aspects of the investigation were provided to the media, as this has impacted on the workplace. “The investigation is completed, and it is time to move on.” Need help with depression or anxiety, or know a loved one who does? Unity in dog war netting results From front page “The terrain and the size of blocks in the range country is an issue when it comes to baiting,” he said. “We just want to see better co-ordination of baiting and for landowners to work more closely together - baiting is only effective when you have a large number of people doing it over a widespread area. “We already have good baiting programs happening in parts of the region, but we need more involvement and more unity. “There are misconceptions around 1080 baits - they don’t have an effect on native animal populations which is one of the messages we want to get across. “Baiting is best practice - along with the other key measures of trapping and shooting.” Freestone’s Alan Payne said he had noticed an increase in wild dog
activity in the district over his years of dairying and echoed calls for more landowner unity. “We have found the dogs coming down out of the range and onto the flats more,” he said. “If they take a calf, it’s amazing how quickly they can clean up a carcase - it’ll be gone the next day. “When you’re mustering cows and you have the dry cows the measurability with calf losses is much more difficult.” Swan Creek producer Noel McConville said he’d been using 1080 baits since the late '70s and said they continued to be “the easiest and most successful” wild dog control measure. “You can use other measures such as shooting, but you don’t see the same results,” he told the Free Times. “Control in national parks is also vital - you tend to see a more golden
yellow strain of dog in the top mountains, whereas down below it’s far more mixed in terms of colouring.” Freestone’s Chris Mauch said one of his cattle-owning neighbours had captured camera footage of “14 dogs on one beast” in recent times. “I’d certainly encourage people to work more closely together with baiting and to come along to the forum and get to know each other.” Well-co-ordinated baiting programs are currently run in the Wildash and Elbow Valley areas, where dedicated landowners collect, prepare and distribute 1080 meat baits, with James Eastwell saying he would like to see similar high participation right across the region. The Wild Dog information evening will be held at Freestone Hall from 5.30pm to 8pm on Thursday 16 March.

Election shake-up
From left: Lorraine Goldspink, Carla Luke, Chelsea McQuillian and Dian Grigs at last Saturday's 'Meet and Greet' in Leslie Park.
The electorate of Southern Downs is one of only two Sunshine State seats which will be unaffected by a redistribution of boundaries announced this week. The biggest shake-up of Queensland electorate boundaries in decades by the Queensland Redistribution Commission is set to create four new electorates in the state and increase the total from 89 to 93. Redistributions are carried out to reflect population changes across Queensland to ensure state electorates continue to have roughly the same number of voters. The last redistribution was in 2008. Other than Southern Downs, the only other Queensland electorate to be left alone is Townsville, which is currently held by the ALP’s Scott Stewart. Veteran Southern Downs MP Lawrence Springborg will retire at the next state election with Deputy Mayor Jo McNally and her colleague Councillor Cameron Gow and RAAF officer James Lister currently vying for the LNP candidacy for the seat. The result of a ballot of local LNP party members is expected to be released on Friday 3 March. See the Free Times online for updates.

only three regulars at present. Members were at Leslie Park in Warwick last Saturday for a ‘Meet and Greet’ with some of their charges, who are looking for new homes and a fresh start. Foster carers are provided with all the food and bedding required -
all they need to contribute is some “TLC”. The association charges around $2000 per pet for adoption, which covers micro-chipping, de-sexing, vaccinations, flea and worm treatment and a general veterinary check. They would also welcome dona-

A hearing into a proposal to allow Sunday and public holiday trading for large retailers in Warwick and Stanthorpe was held in Toowoomba last week. The Queensland Industrial Relations Commission (QIRC) heard an application from the National Retailers’ Association (NRA) to allow retailers with more than 20 employees on site at any given time to open their doors on Sundays and public holidays. The application was supported by the Southern Downs Regional Council and opposed by Spano’s Supa IGA, which operates stores in Warwick and Stanthorpe. A final decision on Sunday trading for Warwick and Stanthorpe by the QIRC is not expected until mid-2017.

SDRC Mayor Tracy Dobie. are not considered part of any operating budget surplus. “The Parks Rationalisation Committee was included in the list of committees and organisations that council decided not to appoint representatives to at its general meeting in June 2016. “A number of residents had indicated that they were concerned with the sell-off of open space and parks. “Over the past two years, council’s focus has been directed at disposing of surplus freehold land, and this process is continuing today.” Mayor Tracy Dobie has previously said the average rates increase in the next 2017-2018 budget would be no more than four per cent.

Your chance to have your say on the next Southern Downs Regional Council budget is just a few weeks away. Councillors and council officers have been busy putting together the draft budget for 20172018 which will be released for public comment on Monday 27 March. This week and last the councillors have been briefed on fees and charges, projected revenue and the long-term financial forecast for the council. Last financial year, the council budget delivered a $5.6 million cash surplus after it was placed on a list of “financially unsustainable” Queensland councils by the Queensland Treasury Corporation. As a result, the SDRC must deliver a surplus every year for the next several years to move from its current “weak” financial position to “moderate” and be removed from the QTC ‘watch list’. The budget will be open for public comment from Monday 27 March to Sunday 23 April, and the final budget will be formally adopted by councillors at a Special Budget Meeting on Wednesday 14 June. Rates notices will be issued in the week beginning Monday 3 July. CEO David Keenan this week quashed suggestions the council would sell off significant council property assets such as the old Warwick Shire depot on Willi Street and the adjacent Rainbow FM site, both of which are prime residential development spots. The council last year raised around $1 million from a sell-off of redundant freehold council property, but has this year also ruled out disposing of under-utilised parkland, despite a parks rationalisation study which has taken more than three years to complete. “Council has no plans at this time to dispose of the Rainbow FM or Willi Street sites,” Mr Keenan said. “Any proposed sale of property would be considered as part of a broader strategy. “It should be noted that funds generated from property sales are directed to debt retirement and

Thumbs Up Thumbs Down
Email your letter to: newsdesk@freetimes.com.au
Indoctrination The astonishing allocation of space on the letters page (Free Times,16 February) to allow the mayor of the Southern Downs Council to attempt to educate Donna Nevin of Killarney, is an example of the hated governance from up on high that will be dealt with in forthcoming elections. How dare a struggling ratepayer question the salaries of those who, from their dominion of power, look down upon ratepayers as their importance allows them to, with total disdain! The debt mayor, is our business, run up endlessly by those who always blame, “the tribunal’s” yearly schedule, which forces councillors to be seriously conflicted about whether or not to accept the increase. Poor ratepayers, they have no say at all - however, come the next council elections the eagerness of tens of candidates lining up to get on board the gravy train exposes all! Let 2017 be the next year tax and ratepayers elect decency, truth, competence and believability to all levels of Australian governments. There will therefore be a return to a land of hope and glory as we Advance Australia Fair! Melba Morris, Allora.
Gates a given Thumbs up to Bob Townshend for his comments on the possible removal of the Leslie Centenary Memorial Gates. I would however, like to correct one important point in his letter. The gates were not purchased by the council.
They were in fact, given to the 1840-1940 Centenary Committee by Mr Oswald Slade to commemorate 100 years of Patrick Leslie settling on the Darling Downs. The committee had the gates erected in their current very prominent position in Leslie Park. In 1941 Mr Donald Gunn, chairman of the committee, handed the gates over to the then mayor of Warwick, Mr J. Allmann, to be caretaker of the gates for the people of Warwick. At the time there was a surplus of 75 pounds in the committee account and this was donated to fund the first Warwick Tourism Association in about 1940-’41. Mr Townshend was absolutely correct in his assertion that the gates have been at the entrance to Leslie Park for far longer than at the entrance to the property from which they were removed and given to the people of Warwick. As a relative newcomer to Warwick, the history and heritage of this great town is important to me and I absolutely concur that they should be retained in their current position as an important reminder of the Leslie family and other pioneer families that opened up this wonderful area. Too much history is being lost or forgotten in this country. Don’t let this be another instance. Beatrice Hawkins, Warwick.
Unprotected I would like to make a comment on changing the council planning scheme. This was put in place to protect the community from inappropriate development. Now the council wants to water it down to
make it easier for the developers to achieve their goals regardless of community impact. The council now has three controversial projects - GrainX, Bunnings and the Dalveen wind farm. The wind farm could not be approved using the planning scheme, as it failed on at least four points. GrainX and Bunnings, I would suggest, would be similar, in that the planning scheme has been ignored for the developer’s benefit. I believe this unacceptable approval process has put the council in an exposed legal position. So to overcome this, the council wants to change the rules to suit their needs. Leave the planning scheme as is and abide by it, don’t ignore it. It was implemented for the good of the community. I find it very interesting that 25 per cent of councillors want to jump ship to the State Government - are things really that bad? Given the mess we now find the council in, I would call on the mayor and councillors to resign and allow someone with community spirit to clean up the mess. Ivan Armstrong, Pozieres.
30 years behind Walking through Warwick and one cannot see nor use a recycling bin - not one in sight. We are only two hours from Brisbane and we are 30 years behind the entire east coast environmental practices. Shame! Donna Nevin, Killarney.

While I was waiting for my turn Ross paid for my haircut unbeknownst to me until I sat down and the hairdresser told me of his kind and generous gesture. A true gentleman. Thank you so very much to him. Ever so grateful.

Thumbs Down To the driver of the black four wheel drive with three large dogs in the back who pulled up opposite me when I was walking my dog in Darling Street near the school. I had fallen backwards and hit my head. This driver turned around in his car, drove past me and didn’t stop to see if I was OK. Very poor on his part!

The year ahead spotlights professional and personal partnerships.
During the last week I had reason for some trips to Toowoomba and noticed some spectacular trees in flower. I have discovered that they are commonly known as the ivory curl tree and the botanical name is Buckinghamia celsissima. It is a member of the Proteaceae family. Another name for them is the spotted silky oak and this seems appropriate because the light grey bark is spotted. Although they only grow naturally in the wet tropic rainforests of north-eastern Queensland they adapt well to a wide variety of areas and will grow in most places that only get light frosts if planted in a protected position. They should be watered well until established but they are reasonably drought tolerant when established. They will flower after two or three years. They do well in full sun or part shade but like good drainage. The size of the tree is determined by the area in which they are grown. In the cooler southern areas they may be more of a large shrub than a tree however the ones I saw in Toowoomba were about three to five metres high and in full flower. In warmer areas they reach six to eight metres. I have seen these trees growing in the centre of the highway in the Brisbane area so they must be extremely hardy to suffer constant traffic pollution. The flowers are produced on the end of the
branches and are full of nectar. They are very attractive to bees and birds and the perfume is beautiful. The trees are rarely affected by any pests or diseases and naturally grow in a pleasant umbrella shape. They have lovely glossy green leaves and the new growth often has a pinkish tinge that adds interest prior to the flowers appearing. The only pruning required is if you need to limit their height or the removal of the spent flower heads if you don’t like their appearance. Definitely a lovely specimen tree if you have the room and one I’d love to grow, maybe in the bottom corner of my yard. Another tree I saw in full flower was the Tibouchina or Lasiandra and it is also a delight to see in full, brilliant purple flower in the late summer and autumn. I have known these beautiful large shrubs or trees as Lasiandra but realise that over the years they have become known as Tibouchina. I don’t know why the change of name and this must have been very confusing to the people of Wauchope in NSW as they have a Lasiandra Festival from the second weekend in March until the end of the month! The first festival was held in 1984 and has been held each year since. It was always wonderful to see the mass of purple as you drove through the town where they are used extensively as street trees. If they can be grown in Toowoomba they should be able to be grown in this area in protected spots with good drainage. There are many varieties now and a huge range of colours from white to pale pink, bright pink and all shades of mauve to deep purple and some bicolours. Some of the smaller varieties can be grown very successfully in pots so they can be moved with the weather and make lovely specimens.
More trivia for your information and amusement. The first garden hoses were made of ox gut around 400BC The first European garden hose was used in Amsterdam in 1672 and was made of leather. The first plant catalogue containing prices was published in 1775 by the Telford family in Yorkshire, England. Previous publications had not listed prices. Lawns were first popularised by Pliny the Younger in Greece in the 1st century AD. Flower pots were maybe invented but certainly popularised by the Egyptian Pharoah Ramses 111 about 1230BC. Japanese consider associate Chrysanthemums with joy and happiness but in Malta they are associated with death and funerals and it is considered unlucky to bring them indoors.

NRL set to ‘make history’ The
spin With Casey O’Connor email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com
For rugby league fans it is seems an age since the excitement of the first weekend in October 2016. There are some who have been counting down the weeks and now days and hours until the start of the 2017 NRL season, and now it has arrived. The season was launched by the 2016 grand final captains Paul Gallen and Cameron Smith earlier this week. The NRL campaign this year is designed to evolve from the 2016 'History Happens’, to a mantra of 'Let’s Make History’ in 2017. While that is all well and good and might leave us with a warm and fuzzy feeling, it is time for someone to take a look at what is going on in the wider rugby league world. Competitions in centres across NSW and Queensland are struggling for numbers. In our own backyard the BRL will not field an under-18 side in the TRL this season. Under-18 competitions across the board are in trouble, and if that is the future of the game then rugby league is not looking as rosy as some would paint it. Will we see the NRL go down the path of rugby with just an elite competition? One would hope not. In the meantime, it’s on with the big show tonight with Cronulla and the Broncos getting the season underway. Of course everyone is tipping blind in round one. For what it is worth, these are my selections. Broncos; Storm; Tigers, Dragons; Cowboys; Titans; Warriors and Eagles. My top eight predictions for the season I will share with you next week. Sharpen those pens and pencils and good tipping in 2017. - Casey T20 SILVERWARE FOR WHEATVALE After some knife edge semi-finals and outstanding individual performances, it was Wheatvale who added the Warwick T20 silverware to their trophy cabinet. The finals were played on Saturday, and after a thrilling semi-final game it was Wheatvale and Colts who lined-up in the finals. In a game that had everyone on the edge of their seats, Wheatvale had a one-run win over Condamine Maryvale in the opening semi at Slade Oval securing their spot in the final. Wheatvale looked to have the game in the bag, chasing a moderate total of 108 before losing five wickets for just one run. With two balls remaining and two wickets in hand it was left to Jack Breen to hit the winning run and put Wheatvale into the final. The second semi-final between Warwick Hotel Colts and Allora was played at Mayhew Oval. Colts had a more comfortable win over their opponents but only after a cameo over from John Cleary who smashed 27 runs. In the grand final Colts batted first and were dismissed for only 92. Geoff Thorley tops cored with 18. Wheatvale looked to be on cruise control as they chased down the total for the loss of just one wicket. Chris Cantwell had a match winning day with the bat, scoring 52 unbeaten runs in the final. He also took two catches in the final. FINAL ROUND This weekend is the final round of the Condamine Cup, and it looks likely that the award for the leading all-rounder of the 2016/'17 competition will come down to performances this weekend. This season the leading all-rounders have accumulated more than 300 runs and taken 12 wickets. Three bowlers have also taken more than 20 wickets. Players must have played a minimum of four games in the Condamine Cup to qualify for individual awards and T20 performances are not included. On Saturday Allora play Allora Rascals at Allora; Inglewood host Sovereign Animals and at Slade Redbacks play Wheatvale. All games commence at 12.30pm.
On Sunday, Colts play Maryvale Condamine with the game starting at 10.30am. UNDER 18S OUT After one season in the TRL competition, the Border Bushrangers under-18 side has been forced to withdraw from the 2017 under-18 competition. Just weeks out from the start of the season, the BRL side has been unable to attract enough players to field a side. While some of the players will be eligible to play up in the senior ranks there are others who will have to seek other avenues if they wish to play football this season. It is an unfortunate fact of life in the BRL and other much larger competitions that it is difficult these days to attract under-18 players. Most players eligible for under-18s have study commitments while others have VET commitments or jobs which limit their ability to play. It is also a big commitment for players to travel to play in the TRL competition. Damian Petrie who was named as coaching director earlier in the year said while it was a disappointing outcome, administrators and coaches had a duty of care to ensure player welfare was not compromised by playing with insufficient bench players to cover injuries. The Border Rugby League Senior competition kicks off on 25 March with the annual Round Robin competition. All clubs are still seeking senior players. WIN ON A COUNTBACK Steve Hampstead survived a countback to win the Single Stroke event at the Wallangarra Golf Club on Saturday. Hampstead also picked up the Birdies Nest on the fourth to top off a winning round. Peter Butler was relegated to the runner’sup position. On a day where pin shots and approach shots were hard to come, Butler claimed the only approach shot on the day at the second hole. The captain stakes went to Brendan McMillian and Peter Williams. The schedule at the Wallangarra Club over the next weeks is busy. On Saturday is the Wallangarra sponsor the March Monthly Medal and Putting competition. On Sunday, the club is holding the Wallangarra Open Single Stableford. Tee off in the open on Sunday has been scheduled for 9am - 9.30am (Qld time). The cost of $25 per person includes lunch. The following weekend (11 March) the Club Championships begin. All finical members are eligible and welcome to play. A reminder to all members that the AGM will be held on Saturday at 10am prior to the tee off. PLENTY OF ACTION ON THE RANGE There was plenty of action last weekend on the Inglewood Sporting Shooters range, with the club hosting a big weekend of Pistol Shooting. Monika White shot well on Saturday in the offhand to out-score Tom Donald and Kirsten Small. White partnered with Kirsten Small to take out the Tag Team event. Tom Donald and Ray Dudgeon were runners-up and Glen Small and Richard White finished in third place. White also placed third in the Rimfire Action won by Glen Small. Kirsten Small was the runner-up. In Sunday’s shoot, Stephanie Dudgeon took out the C/Fire Revolver event outscoring Iain Bowen and Tom Donald. Ray Dudgeon won the Rimfire Semi-Automatic with Stephanie Dudgeon and Ross Jackson filling the minor placings. Andrew Slack had a win in the C/Fire Semi Auto. Placegetters were Tom Donald and Iain Bowen. Slack was also successful in the Two Gun, defeating Ray Dudgeon and Stephanie Dudgeon. He also partnered with Stephanie Dudgeon to win the Tag Team event, defeating Michael Dudgeon and partner Iain Bowen and Ross Jackson and Stephanie Dudgeon. Tom Donald took out the Offhand Rapid Fire event with a win over Iain Bowen and Stephanie Dudgeon. This Sunday the club is holding a Clays competition beginning at 10am at their Range which is located at 749 Bosnjaks Road Glenarbon. Visitors are always welcome. Further information can be found on the club Facebook page.
Anthony Badesso during Saturday s shoot at the Inglewood range. WIN FOR DOWIE Sam Dowie is better known for his form with a cricket bat, but last Sunday at Sporters he showed plenty of talent with a golf club. Dowie edged out runner-up Bob Watts to win the round. Luke Reardon had the Best Gross score of the round. The run-downs went to Norm Steele and Peter Goodsir. Mick Speers pricked up the pin shot at the third and Ian Anderson claimed the pro pin and also went home with a meat tray. Ray Thorn did not leave empty-handed, winning the remaining meat tray. Sporters and other golfers should pencil 9 April into their diaries as the Maureen Bates Memorial Golf Day: A two-ball nine hole Ambrose will be played with a 9am shotgun start planned. A barbecue and Multi Draw raffle will follow the game. Of course, this weekend Sporters will tee off at the regular time of time 7.30-8.30am. Mallet players kept busy Mallet players were kept busy with plenty of players turning out for all forms of the game. Pat Schnoor and Carol Verwey returned to the court for the association croquet games last week. Schnoor and partner Val Shephard scored a 20 -18 win over Heather Widderick and Andrea Denkewitz in a close game. Shepherd scored a break of three in the game. Joy Newman and Effey Russell played a Singles game with Newman winning 26-18. Jenny Tunbridge played well in her game against Carol Verwey and Val Richardson; the score 26-11. There was a full court of players at golf croquet, and two players scored a hole in one during the games. Bev Sullivan partnered Marian Castle and despite nailing a hole in one, the pair was defeated by Shirley Page and Sharyn Roser. Dianne Wren had a standout game in the second group. She and partner Justin Liddy scored a 13 -8 win over opponents Liz Ellway and Johnno. Wren top-scored with eight. In the second round of games, Fancourt nailed her hole in one. It was not enough however to secure a win for Fancourt and partner Judy Lock. In a close game they were beaten by Bev Sullivan and Dianne Wren. Fancourt and Sullivan topped the scoring with seven. John Castles and Justin Liddy worked well together to overcome Johnno and Elaine Brown 119, Liz Ellway and Shirley Page overcame Sharyn
Roser and Marian Castles to win 9- 8. Ellway top-scored with seven. In the gateball games played on Friday, Bill “go for the gate“ Golding captained the Red team of Grace Howard, Heather Widderick, John Draper and Sharyn Roser. Margaret Dickenson captained the White team of Jenny Tunbridge, Joy Newman, and Val Fancourt. Overall honours went to the White team. White won the first game - a close affair 10-9. In the second game, they scored a more comfortable 13-9 victory. In the final game which White won 13-8 Val Fancourt scored an ‘Agari’. The Red team’s only win came in game three. A group of keen gateball players have restarted Saturday afternoon competition. Bill Golding and Margaret Dickenson teamed up playing the White balls against Andrea Denkewitz, Val Fancourt and Sharyn Roser, playing Red. Golding played extremely well, making some great shots. He and his partner won the first game 17 - 10 and the second 11-9. The final game resulted in a 10all tie at the end of the regulation 30 minutes, but went to White after a countback. GOOD SCORES IN 4BBB The Stanthorpe Golf Club’s end of month medley 4BBB stableford was decided on Saturday and proved very competitive with good scores returned. Paul Mills and Mike McAuliffe had a front nine of 23 and a back nine of 26 sealed the win for them. Mills produced a solid scoring round and McAuliffe added to their final score with some good holes. Keith Allen and Ken Hinze held out on a countback to wrap up second place with 48 points. A front nine score of 26 points put them in a solid position but a couple of short circuits for only 22 points on the back nine kept them out of top spot. Pin shots went to Luke Reardon (3), Bill Pyne (12) and Matt Waterworth (17). Rachael Hendry took the ladies approach at 17. Pro-pins went to Bill Pyne (1/10), Keith Jones (5/14) and Kev Rowling (9/18). There were no pin shots for the ladies but there were some great sand bunker shots seen at the par three. Wes and Hayden Smith carded 48 points and were unlucky to miss out on the countback and figured in the rundowns. Two teams with 47 points collected balls. Early birds Greg Yap and Santo Cavallaro and later in the day duo of Darryl Boekholt and Greg Fraser.

Maryvale Condamine captain Dave Walker hits the ball out of the park at Slade on Saturday. Unfortunately his side fell one run short of an appearance in the T20 grandfinal. Saturday marks the start of the 2017 financial year for the club, and the first opening event is the March monthly medal and putting competition which is sponsored by long-time supporter of the club Maddie’s Gift Gallery. It is also the first of three rounds for the Pike Trophy and the start of the ‘Golfer of the Year’ competition. There is a time sheet is on the board and tee off from 11.30am. Players are asked to put their names on the time sheet to assist with catering. Valley’s charge towards finals With only two rounds of fixtures now remaining after last weekend’s games in the Stanthorpe Cricket Association 2016/'17 fixtures Valleys are making a late charge for the Minor Premiership. While ladder leaders RSL had the bye last weekend, Valleys scored a big win over a disappointing Wanderers side at Sheehan Oval and along the way picked up four points for the win and two bonus points. In a very one-sided affair, Valleys dismissed Wanderers for just 52 runs. Only Tim Harslett (14) and Extras (12) made it to double figures as four batsmen were returned to the club house without troubling the scorers. Valley’s bowlers Curtis Allen and Damian Anderson each claimed three scalps as the Wanderers batting line-up collapsed. It took only seven overs for Valleys to reel in the runs. Opener Andrew Middleton was the only batsman dismissed, run out for 10. Middleton’s opening partner Curtis Allen (30) scored the bulk of the required runs after a good effort with the ball. On the CF White Oval, Souths also had a comprehensive win over their opponents Tenterfield. Souths opened the batting with youngsters Tom Bonner and Liam Lanza who set up the innings with a fine first-wicket partnership of 58 before Lanza was dismissed for a top score of 44. In a well-crafted innings, Bonner pushed for
singles and twos and kept the scoreboard ticking over. While the young guns set a good platform, it was the experienced Mark Lanza who steadied the ship. Lanza came to the wicket with the score at 3/78 and the game in the balance. He was clean bowled by Skinner with the score at 7/100. Souths failed to bat out their 40 overs and were all out for 118 in the 33rd over. Alan Cameron remained not out 13. Skinner was Tenterfield’s main strike weapon, taking five wickets in a good display. After a good performance in the field, the game was there to be won by Tenterfield. Opening batsman Alan Donges was out for a duck in just the fourth over. The Tenterfield batsmen were having trouble putting runs on the board and at the fall of the second wicket in the seventh over had only scored 12 runs. Tight bowling frustrated the batsmen and wickets tumbled. Tenterfield were dismissed for just 69 in the 24th over. In a batting display, Tenterfield would perhaps like to forget Brownrigg top scored with nine off the bat while extras accounted for 25 runs as 20 wides and five no balls gifted Tenterfield runs. Harry Williams took 3/16 in a game where all of the Souths bowlers chipped in with wickets and they had a strong performance in the field. The win give Souths a foothold on third spot on the ladder. The Warwick Wolves are on the hunt for players to join them for 2017. game, Banditt stole the win with his last bowl with Sue holding two shots. Tuck had a 25-12 win over Thommo - all luck and skill according to Thommo in this win. Aaron was too good for Lorna, picking up a 25-14 win in a strong showing.
