WorkSafe to fill shortfall
200 new jobs By Luke Voogt More than 200 jobs might be up for grabs at WorkSafe’s new Geelong headquarters as some staff decline to leave Melbourne, a state minister told the Indy yesterday (Thursday). About 70 per cent of the authority’s Melbourne staff who were asked to relocate under stage one of the transition had made the move, Finance Minister Robin Scott said. The trend suggested that WorkSafe would need many recruits to reach it eventual staffing level of 700-plus employees and contractors in Geelong, he said “If that continued you’d be looking at around 200 people from Geelong. “It will depend on how many people determine to (relocate). Some people have family commitments et cetera in Melbourne and won’t. “Certainly there’ll be some expectations that some people will be hired from Geelong.” Mr Scott visited Geelong yesterday as the authority completed the first stage of its relocation and met many of the 150-plus staff who were working temporarily in Geelong’s TAC headquarContinued page 3 ters.

Best likely to ‘die in jail after new sex sentence’ A convicted paedophile who preyed on St Joseph’s College students will probably die in jail after his sentencing to more jail time for assaulting another 20 boys. Christian Brother Robert Best, 76, was already serving a sentence of almost 15 years after his 2011 conviction for sex crime against 11 boys at the college and several other Victorian schools from 1968 to 1988. But he was sentenced again yesterday (Thursday) to 10 years and five months’ jail for the attacks on the additional 20 victims, mostly aged between eight and 11 at the time. The assaults involved students at Newtown’s St Joseph’s as well as children at one Ballarat college
and two in Melbourne. Best taught at St Joseph’s from 1985 to 1989. He will be 86 in 2027 when he becomes eligible for parole. Some of his victims cried in court as his crimes were read out, the ABC reported after the sentencing. Judge Geoffrey Chettle in sentencing described Best’s behaviour as “disgusting and abhorrent”, the ABC reported. “You caused lifelong misery to many people,” Judge Chettle told Best. “I accept it is highly likely you will die in jail.” Best was a “obviously a disgrace to that order” despite remaining a Christian Brother, Judge
Chettle said. Best’s new convictions prompted Christian Brothers Oceania Province to again apologise for his crimes. “Robert Best has committed offences that represent the most grievous betrayal of the trust of innocent children and their families,” the order said in a statement released to media outlets. “To those who have suffered abuse, we apologise to you and your loved ones without reservation. “The independent judicial process has now delivered justice for those crimes.” The order failed to explain why Best remained a Christian Brother.

In Brief Case dropped Geelong residents have reacted angrily on social media after prosecutors dropped charges against three brothers who were accused of raping a 14-year-old girl at St Albans Park in 2015. Reports suggested the alleged victim was too traumatised to proceed with the trial against Allan Mark Wild, 30, Kevin Andrew Wild, 29, and Brodie Mark Wild, 20.
Site sell-off Geelong’s council administrators have agreed to sell a 2.7-hectare site at Drysdale for “not less” than $740,000 so the Roman Catholic Trust can expand St Ignatius College. The administrators ticked off the sale this week after the failure of Geelong’s previous council to secure a land swap with the trust.
Big arrest A “significant arrest” has left a teenager in jail over a spate of burglaries around Geelong, according to police. High Volume Crime Team investigators arrested the 18-year-old male on Monday before he was remanded in custody to face court in relation to “at least 20 burglaries”, police said.
Aboriginal action Geelong’s council will hire an “Aboriginal and policy liaison officer” to work on training and job opportunities for the city’s indigenous community, according to a City Hall statement. The additional staffer would also “expedite” a review of the council’s Aboriginal action plan, which included formation of a new advisory committee, City Hall said.

200 new jobs as WorkSafe proves to be a good move tion and other industries, he said. “People who moved down to Melbourne are very pleased with the move and are really loving the lifestyle,” he said. “The experienced has been really positive with the local community welcoming them.” Mr Scott described the new locals as “evangelists for Geelong”. “Geelong has new group of marketers not just for the lifestyle but for the community.” New WorkSafe resident Alicia Crabtree was looking forward to exploring the Bellarine Peninsula and jumping into the surf with her children. “We spend a lot of time at the beach with dogs -
the coastline here is absolutely beautiful,” she said. “I have all these different places to explore.” Ms Crabtree moved from Frankston to Ocean Grove with her partner and three children recently. “The surf club has been very inviting and the primary school has been amazing in getting our children settled and making them feel like part of the community,” she said. The move also saved her two hours’ commuting daily. “It’s been a huge bonus in relocating to the Bellarine,” she said. “We live in an amazing location and I’ve gained two extra hours with my kids each day.”
Avenue protected A new heritage overlay will preserve Geelong’s Vietnam Veterans Avenue of Honour “for years to come”, according to council administrator Peter Dorling. Mr Dorling and his two colleagues adopted the former council’s overlay proposal this week following years of local efforts to protect the site and remove an overlooking billboard.

Mr Scott was keen to promote the new wave of workers moving to Geelong, describing it as a boon for the region. Among the increasingly disparate crowd at Geelong’s annual celebration of multiculturalism on Saturday, one group of not-all-smiling faces stood out. It wasn’t for their costumes, which were simple work wear. And it wasn’t for their parading, which amounted to a steady plod. It was for the question of just why Barwon Water was part of the Pako Festa parade in the first place. The debut seemed incongruous with the usual chore of delivering water and taking away sewage. Hopefully the participants were workday crew volunteering their time on a weekend. Although they clearly weren’t a flash-mob either, so someone must have spent ratepayers’ time putting together the parade contingent. Anyway, clearly new CEO Tracey Slatter is vigorously pursuing one of her stated priorities for Barwon Water: greater diversity. Well, okay, but just as long as it doesn’t apply to the product’s flavour!
STEPPING OUT: Barwon Water debuts in the Pako Festa parade, bearing messages somewhat removed from the usual restrictions and savings advice. (Luke Voogt)
The region lost a character - and a fierce advocate - when Barwon Heads’ Randall Bell died suddenly on Sunday, aged 72. A witty lawyer with a keen turn of phrase and no time for fools, Randall regularly applied his tongue and talents to the defence of local heritage assets. He was active with the National Trust’s Geelong branch but performed possibly his most outspoken work as president of Victorian Landscape Guardians. Among many achievements, Randall led the successful fight against a 2008 push to expand Barwon Heads’ town boundaries. Lo-
cals might like to remember his legacy as developers continue circling paddocks to the west. He was also prominent in arguments over wind power, opposing turbines as a blight on the landscape and an unreliable source of electricity. And he took on both sides of the argument with equal gusto. “I’ll break his arms,” he warned then-incoming Premier Denis Napthine in 2013 about any thoughts of reneging on a policy banning turbines in scenic areas. Vale, Randall Bell - our landscapes will be more vulnerable without you.
In America they call it ‘Trump Derangement Syndrome’ - and the infection’s seemingly spread to Geelong. According to American ‘Deplorables’, the singular symptom is abandonment of rationality, sanity even, in efforts to attack any initiative, idea or suggestion by the controversial new US President. And so the fever reached Avalon’s airshow this week when a local executive addressing a corporate gathering scoffed at The Donald’s plan to “only fight wars the US can win”. Err, Double Take’s no defence expert but it seems like a sensible strategy. Much better than the alternative, at the very least!

Green power bid for coastal town
Construction of a “vibrant network of unique spaces” is underway in central Geelong, city leaders have announced. The laneways project would “revitalise the city and bring more people into town”, said Geelong MP Christine Couzens. “Enhancing Geelong’s laneways will contribute to our goal of a thriving economy and a vibrant city centre in Geelong,” she said. “I’m pleased to see council’s progress on this important project and know that our government is behind this project 100 per cent.”

The laneways project is part of a 10-year joint council and state plan to revitalise central Geelong. Geelong’s council and State Government have committed millions of dollars to the laneway that is set for improvements ranging from additional trees to installation of public art and street furniture. “Everyone who lives, works or plays in Geelong will benefit from these enduring, significant initiatives,” council administrators chair Kathy Alexander said.

Anglesea could convert to renewable energy in as little as two years, a Deakin electronical engineering expert has said. Associate Professor Aman Than Oo, who works on the Surf Coast Shire’s renewables panel, said the region was well suited to green energy. The head of Deakin’s electrical engineering department said his team had modelled energy consumption and 12 months of weather patterns on the Surf Coast. “There are strong wind patterns in the region,” he said. Assoc Prof Than Oo made the comments following an announcement by local group Anglesea Community Energy (ACE) that it would work towards 100 per cent renewables. Aman Than Oo But for the goal to become a reality Assoc Prof Than Oo said the town would have to decrease its energy usage by 20 to 30 per cent. “Energy efficiency is very critical before we look at the sources for our need.” The town’s population surges to more than 16,000, eight times its population, during summer months, according to Surf Coast Shire data. Assoc Prof Than Oo added that advancements in battery technology would be a key part of making a town like Anglesea carbon neutral. “They are still very expensive and not very efficient and they consume a lot of space. But their performance is improving week by week.”
Assoc Prof Than Oo said the town could work on a “micro grid”, producing solar and wind energy where it is consumed. “We have seen this in towns in Sweden and Germany.” He added that such a system could save electricity normally lost as it travelled cross-country via power lines. “Along the way, depending on the age of those assets, we lose 20 to 30 per cent.” Assoc Prof Than Oo said a town the size of Anglesea could see a” return on investment in four or five years”. He said using renewable energy sources in Anglesea would not cause electricity prices to rise in other parts of Geelong. Renewable energy was sold back onto the grid at 4 cents per kilowatt/hour, while electricity normally retails at 18 to 35 cents per kilowatt/hour, he said. Earlier this week the ACE’s Sally Groom announced that the group would work to 100 per cent renewable energy. “We’re aiming to get some small-scale renewable energy projects up and running, such as rooftop solar on larger buildings and an electric car charging station,” Ms Groom said. The newly-formed group of “environmentallyconscious locals” initially came together to discuss the future of the old Alcoa site. “We quickly realised that the Alcoa site was not the only option for community energy in Anglesea and that there were other ways the town could become more energy efficient.” ACE’s ultimate aim is to help the Anglesea community reduce its reliance on fossil fuels. “In the medium term, we will be trying to put together a model to work towards a 100 per cent renewable Anglesea,” Ms Groom said.

Recycling close to its bag limit Careless residents are hampering Geelong’s recycling efforts and potentially costing hundreds of thousands of ratepayer dollars, according to City Hall. The City’s William Tieppo said Geelong’s recycling contamination rate had reached 9.53 per cent, filling limited landfill space with recyclable materials. “We are urging everyone to make sure they’re putting the correct items in the appropriate bins, he said. Mr Teippo said if the contamination rate passes 10 per cent the revenue the City received from the recycling processing company would reduce by up to $350,000. “This would a significant impact on the City’s overall operating budget. Mr Tieppo said one of the most common mistakes was residents putting recyclables into plastic bags prior to placing them in the recycling bin. “This leads to all this material making its way into landfill, he said. “Plastic bags are a huge problem, so don’t use
them to tie up your recycling or green waste. Instead, keep recyclables and garden waste loose and in the correct bins. “Paper, cardboard, glass and rigid plastic such as strawberry punnets and ice cream containers - can all go in the yellow-lid bin. Soft plastics - like glad wrap and bread bags and other general rubbish go in your red-lid bin. Soft plastics can be recycled at specially marked bins at participating Coles supermarkets. Mr Tieppo said the City would start a bin inspection and recycling education program next month to curb contamination. “Cameras will be fixed to selected recycling trucks to help monitor where rubbish has been incorrectly placed in yellow lid bins, he said. “A sticker will then be placed on these bins, informing residents that plastic bags - or whatever the items may be - don’t belong in the recycling bin.

David Upham’s family will be right beside him when he takes to the pedals this month to raise money for sick children. The Highton local will take off from St Kilda on 4 March for Victoria Ride for Sick Kids, which raises money for Ronald McDonald House. His father John, brother Paul and sister Danielle will be alongside him on four-day, 400km ride, which passes through Lorne and Geelong. “They’ve been unbelievable ... they’ve gotten right behind me,” he said. “It will be my sister’s first time. She hadn’t even ridden a road bike until a month ago.” The ride will be the fifth for the fast food chain’s Lara licensee, who has raised roughly $25,000 for the charity since 2002. The 37-year-old has been riding 150km a week trying to get “bike fit” again. “I used to do triathlons and do a bit of riding,” he said. “I’ve been doing a lot of training over the last few weeks.” The charity ride will also be his 66-year-old father’s fifth. “He rides about 160km a week,” David said. “He doesn’t look like a rider but he goes real good.” Despite having raised about $700 when he spoke to the Indy on 22 February, he was confident he could again reach his $5000 goal. “My family normally all chip in the last few weeks,” he said.“And whatever I raise (from donors) I double it.” Geelong football legends Billy Brownless and Cameron Ling will join David for “A Night in the Waterfront” during the ride on 6 March. The event will feature AFL personality Craig “Hutchy” Hutchinson and Sue Vittori, who rode around Cambodia raising money to prevent violence against children. “They have a function every night raising money,” David said. “This is the first time I’ll be hosting one - which is pretty exciting.” For details visit www.rmhc.org.au/events/nightwaterfront
Keith Ross has spent 40 years protecting lives and livelihoods in the Grovedale Fire Brigade, which recently celebrated its 75th anniversary. “When you join the CFA, you quickly become the member of a big family,” the 67-year-old told the Indy Tuesday. “You meet a lot of good people and make a lot of good friends.” Keith moved to Grovedale in 1974 after growing up chasing fire trucks on the edge of Ballarat. “We didn’t know too many people, and I wanted to do something for the community.” Keith remembers fighting the bushfires which ravaged the Dandenongs in 1997, and closer to home he remembers helping to extinguish a pallet fire at timber supplier in Marshall. “If we hadn’t have gone to it quickly, they could have lost a lot of their timber and their livelihoods,” The former banker Keith Ross now helps train the next generation of firefighters and balances the books of local brigades. Grovedale CFA celebrated its 75-year milestone on 11 February with gala dinner, followed by an open day with displays from the Fire Services Museum of Victoria, and then a community barbecue on Red Balloon Day (28 February) as the nation thanked its volunteer firefighters. Grovedale CFA captain Robert Clark said the future looked good for the brigade’s 68 members. “There are people on the waiting list to get in, so it’s certainly a good way to be.” Grovedale Primary School students, shadow emergency minister Brad Battin and South Barwon MP Andrew Katos attended the barbecue to raise money for the brigade.

Backyard push to halt rehab centre By Luke Voogt Geelong administrators will decide the fate of a proposed rehabilitation centre sited 12 metres from a Highton bottle shop following a campaign by local residents. The City referred the project to a Development Hearings Panel after receiving 99 objections by the deadline for public comment last Thursday. Former councillor and Highton resident Ron Nelson submitted a further 427 signatures to City Hall on Tuesday night. “I have heard the community and feel a responsibility to do more because there has been no community consultation by this council,” he said. Mr Nelson said the centre should be sited near a hospital or in the countryside, not a residential area. “We cannot deny that drug and alcohol addiction is a real problem in our society and we do need more rehab centres. “But (the proposed clinic) is opposite a bottle shop, vet clinic and several other licensed clubs.” In a letter to neighbouring residents, the company behind the project, Habitat Therapeutics, said clients who relapsed would be evicted without refund. “The company keeps the money,” Mr Nelson said. “They can then get another patient and get an-
other $25,000 - I have a real ethical problem with that.” But Habitat Therapeutics director and recovered alcoholic David Forbes said “clients will not be shuffled out the door”. “It would point to a total lack in duty of care on our behalf. This is at odds with the congruous way in which Habitat Therapeutics and its staff operate.” Mr Forbes added that learning to deal with temptation was part of the treatment. “Imagine that we were to teach an alcoholic to completely avoid all contact with anything related to alcohol. It’s virtually impossible save for a life off the grid.” Mr Forbes welcomed the review, saying he wanted the project to be as transparent as possible. “We believe and are advised by planning experts that our application is compliant with council regulations.” Doctor Kathy Alexander said she and her fellow administrators would hear from all parties concerned about project due to “a large amount of community concern”. The administrators would then decide whether to approve the project at 4 North Valley Road, she said. City Hall is yet to set a date for the hearing.

Over the next two months during Time to Decide phase of Our Future our community is being asked to continue assisting us to prioritise the ideas contained in the Your Ideas, Our Future Interim Reportt as we all work toward determining the most appropriate vision for our region.
LYRICAL GIFT: Point Lonsdale songwriter Tex Miller won a chance to premiere a music video at a Geelong festival later this year.
Informed community participation is a powerful way to influence decision makers. You can read the interim report and share your views on which ideas should be prioritised by completing the online survey at www.geelongaustralia.com.au/ourfuture. On the website you can also nominate to attend the Our Future Assemblyy to held on 6 May 2017.
Point Lonsdale’s Tex Miller hopes winning a Geelong music competition will help him burst onto the Australian blues scene. The radio presenter and singer-songwriter won the chance to premier a music video at Geelong After Dark festival through the City’s Connecting Song competition. “Music promotion doesn’t come cheap these days,” the 25-year-old said. “It’s come at the right time - I’ve been looking to do a few promo pics and film clips.” The only catch: he has just a month and a half to write a song about Point Lonsdale. But Tex was undaunted by the challenge. He won a similar song-writing competition, Queenscliff Music Festival’s ’Rip A Riff ’, in 2010. “You just have to put pen and paper together and make the magic happen,” he said. Tex will work with mentor and prolific blues artist Tim Neal - who has shared stages with artists like Paul Kelly and The John Butler Trio. “He’s worked with nearly everyone in the music industry in Australia,” Tex said.
If you would prefer a hard copy of the report, the survey or assembly nomination form, please contact Lisa on 5272 4075. Survey results will contribute to the final Our Future strategy document, which will be community document and a key resource for the incoming Council, to be elected in late October 2017, and subsequent councils, other organisations, businesses and anyone wanting to make a genuine contribution to Greater Geelong.

Tex to team up with Tim for ‘blues’ By Luke Voogt
“I love writing about the region, and I’m thoroughly looking forward to seeing what me and Tim can put together.” Tex was surprised and honoured to be among the three winning artists in Geelong. “There’s so much talent around the region,” he said. “Geelong has an outstanding blues community with plenty of people to look up to for advice.” He hopes the win will help him promote his second EP which he plans to launch in June. “I’m really proud of it because it’s the best thing I’ve done,” he said. The other winners, Ocean Grove pop singer Jeffrey Harwood and Geelong-born hip hop artist Shaun Fogarty, will also premier clips at After Dark. They will collaborate respectively with rock singer Adalita and Trem One from hip hop outfit Lyrical Commision to create songs about their home suburbs. Connecting Song is part of the City’s Mountain to Mouth - an 80km “extreme arts walk” featuring Geelong After Dark. 9 GEELONG INDY Friday, 3 March, 2017

Motorists rushed to the aid of a driver trapped in a truck which appeared to leak fuel after rolling on an Anglesea Road roundabout on Tuesday. Geelong Highway Patrol Sergeant Peter Radford said “up to six people” broke through the windscreen to rescue the driver. “A lot of people just drive past and don’t bother stopping - so good on them.” The truck rolled on the roundabout, just off Geelong’s bypass, about 6.30pm. Police responded shortly after when they received reports of leaking fuel . Sgt Radford said officers later confirmed the truck wasn’t leaking fuel. He said police were investigating speed as a
possible factor. “It looks like he’s taken the roundabout a little too quick and he’s rolled over,” he said. An ambulance took the man to Geelong hospital where he received treatment for minor head injuries. Sgt Radford said it was the second truck rollover near the bypass in two months and urged truck drivers to exercise caution. “We had a big log truck roll over. They just need to be aware of what they’re carrying and their speed.” Sgt Radford urged anyone with information on the rollover to call Geelong Highway Patrol on 5247 3500. “If anyone actually witnessed the rollover we’d appreciate a phone call,” he said.

Business awards’ nominations buzz Nominations are flooding in for this year’s Geelong Business Excellence Awards, according to organisers. Around 80 more arrived in the days after last week’s official launch, Geelong Chamber of Commerce’s Kelli Finlayson said. Last week’s Geelong Indy promoted the launch with an eight-page wrap-around feature, including a message of support from Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. Ms Finlayson predicted “the biggest awards
ever” in 2017. “We now have around 200 nominations already, which is fantastic,” Ms Finlayson said. “There’s a real buzz this year.” Anyone, including shoppers, suppliers and clients, can nominate businesses at the awards’ website, gbea.com.au. Nominations for each of the 21 categories close on 31 March, with winners revealed in August. The Indy is a sponsor of the Geelong Business Awards.
A Geelong website has put projects totalling $20 million in motion since its launch, according to its creators. James Baird, the founder of Localised, said the digital platform helped Geelong businesses take advantage of local supply chains and create jobs. “Having improvement in local procurement and social procurement is a really important part of our story.” Mr Baird said 500 users had registered with Localised since it went live in late 2016. The majority joined after the website’s official launch on 22 February. “We’ve had a number of projects going to the platform off the back of the launch. We’re now looking at in excess of $20 million in projects across a range of different categories.” Mr Baird urged other businesses seeking services to link with Localised, as it “creates networks” and “tackles entrenched disadvantage”. The website forms a key part of Geelong Region Opportunities for Work (GROW) - the brainchild of regional municipality body G21. The initiative seeks to target joblessness and improve social prosperity through local supply chains and procurement.
NETWORKER: Localised founder James Baird. 165567_01
G21 chief executive Elaine Carbines urged businesses to seek solutions through Localised. “This platform helps fill a critical gap in supply chain connections, targeting the billions of dollars in procurement lost to the region while striving for such important social outcomes,” she said. Research commissioned by GROW has found that less than half of $17 billion of business procurement yearly in the region goes to local suppliers.
Surveyors’ shop burnt to the ground CFA investigators are working to determine the cause of a blaze which burnt a Geelong West property to the ground Wednesday night. Duty officer for CFA District 7 Archie Conroy said investigators were still on site at noon yesterday (Thursday). “We’re not sure yet if it’s a suspicious fire or not,” he said. The fire destroyed the Pakington Street build-
ing owned by land surveyors Rodney Martin and Associates. More than 30 fire fighters took roughly 45 minutes to get the fire under control after the CFA received a call about 11pm, Mr Conroy said. Six trucks from Corio and Geelong attended the blaze and fire crews remained at the scene until 1.20am yesterday to check for “hot spots”, he said.

Police hunt man over stab attack
UNDER THE WEATHER
Police are hunting an alleged armed robber who allegedly stabbed a woman at Torquay. Police alleged that the man approached a woman in a car park on Bristol Road about 9pm on 22 February, grabbing her and demanding she hand over car keys. “While trying to fend off the man she was stabbed in the lower back with a sharp object,“ police said. “The man was last seen running towards Zeally Bay Road." Torquay Criminal Investigation Unit detectives this week released a computer-generated image of a man they wanted to interview over the incident. The detectives also released images from security camera footage taken at a Torquay premises. WANTED: ComputerPolice described generated image of the man the man as aged police want to question over between 19 to 23, the Torquay stabbing. about 170cm tall, with blonde, collar-length hair and tanned skin. He was wearing dark blue shorts and no shirt. Investigators believed he might have been part of a larger group of men consuming alcohol earlier in the day on Torquay Beach opposite Gilbert Street. Policed urged anyone who recognised the man or with any information to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to lodge a confidential report at crimestoppersvic.com.au
Lindsay Smail February 2017 turned out to be just fractionally cooler than average but completed a summer that was a little warmer than usually experienced in the Geelong region. Also in contrast, February was relatively wet but summer overall was drier than normal. February’s maximums averaged 25.8C, just above the 30-year average of 25.2C. But the daily minimums averaged 13.5C for the month compared to the higher 30-year figure of 14.2C. The month’s top temperature reached 36.3C on 8 February, while eight days were over 30C but none reached 40C. The coldest night was 15 February when the mercury fell to 8.3C. The figures for February failed to prevent Geelong recording a summer that was warmer than the 30-year mean temperature, by 19.5C compared to 18.9C. February delivered central Geelong above-average rain, thanks largely to a constant downpour that began on the fifth and ended up filling gauges to 40.6mm Outer suburbs, such as Grovedale with 27cm, received less but the result was similar: some flash flooding, thunder and lightning, although the event failed to qualify as a severe storm. February had only five rain days, but most of the region received above-average falls. As a result, the region’s water catchments finished the month at 70 per cent of capacity. As with the monthly and seasonable temperature contrasts, Geelong’s wetter-than-average February failed to prevent summer finishing drier than normal. The seasonal figure was 91mm compared to the long-term average of 118mm. Apart from 5 February’s heavy rain, the month featured little else of weather significance, with no strong winds, extreme temperatures or storms. * Lindsay Smail operates Geelong Weather Services

Letters No council, no worries It’s been nigh on to six months that Geelong’s council was fired and the lavish expense accounts and overseas junkets came to a screeching halt. Has anyone else noticed a scrap of difference in their daily life that could be attributed to this event? And now we are insulted to hear conformation that councillors will return in October. I wished we had a choice. And does anyone seriously think the calibre of person attracted to the office will be any better next time around? I love Geelong but I honestly think we could do a lot worse than scrap the council - for good. Kevin V Russell Geelong
Airshow a security threat Avalon’s airshow has changed in recent years. Military aircraft this year take centre stage and the show is advertised primarily as an opportunity to thrill to “the raw potency and power” of jet fighters, bombers and giant heavy-lift leviathans as attack helicopters join the fray. Of particular concern, the show is now also accompanied by an international arms fair for selling military hardware. Are these developments in Australia’s best interests? Might they actually risk our security for short-term financial gain? We need weapons for defence but since when have we been a country that flaunts its military might as public entertainment like Russia or North Korea? Since when has it been good to tell our children that the power to threaten others is thrilling? The trade promoted in the arms fair has proved a dire scourge in other parts of the world, undermining good governance and diverting money from essential services in some of the world’s poorest countries. In addition, the increased availability of weapons makes conflicts more likely to become fights to the death, blighting economic and social devel-

Not all ’like us’ A banner hanging somewhat provocatively on the front of Geelong Trades Hall Council’s building proclaims: ‘Welcome asylum seekers, people just like us’. Not quite. While they may be made of flesh and blood, sadly a percentage is not just like us, with little or no respect for our laws, values and customs. Some effectively bite the hand of friendship extended by this nation toward them and which quite literally feeds them!
Bouquets to Pakington St’s Presbyterian church for clearing debris from where it burnt down last year to lay crushed rock and carpet so children could play games and adults could enjoy refreshments in two tents during Pako Festa. Only hypocricy sustained The weekend’s Pako Festa occasioned a discussion on sustainability, with the usual suspects. It has always occurred to me that governments are the biggest environmental vandals of the lot, given that the North Shore wood-chipping yards have for decades been full of timber from denuded Victorian forests. Similarly, the Great Barrier Reef has been neglected for decades, or at least in regards to the current alleged crisis of farm fertiliser run-off. Some years ago framers in the Atherton Tablelands food bowl near Cairns were told by a scientific research organisation that they would soon
Email: editorial@geelongindependent.com.au 78 Moorabool St, Geelong, 3220 Fax: 5249 6799 be unable to grow anything because their soils were so depleted. This is the case in many parts of Australia, where agricultural land is under stress because of pressure to produce and because governmental environment authorities have failed to intervene with requirements to replenish soils. The Government has shown its disdain of rural folk via its dreadful treatment of dairy farmers in recent years and its unwillingness to support them in their time of crisis. If governments were truly interested in sustainability they would have legislated to ensure that all industrial and agricultural enterprises were conducted sustainably. Today sustainability is just a catch-all phrase to push any barrow you like and to beat someone over the head with. Gary Oraniuk Geelong West
Seriously, green power’s nuts It’s hard to take Leigh Adamson seriously. South Australia, with its high renewable energy imputes, has had four major blackouts in recent months. But Leigh Adamson wants to plunge Victoria into darkness, too, along with other states depending on its coal-fired power. I shudder to think what will happen when Hazelwood closes this month. As for storing renewable energy, it’s expensive, has a short shelf life, and is still economically unviable. If a Martian came to Earth today he would think Leigh Adamson nuts for wanting to trade in efficient, abundant and reliable fossil fuel power for intermittent, expensive renewable energy. The claim that renewable energy is cheaper than coal is laughable. Factor in the huge subsidies for renewables and the real cost is about three times as expensive. Let’s keep coal fired power - it’s a much cheaper and a far better option than expensive renewables. Alan Barron Grovedale

FINALLY FRIDAY
First stop as Lee lights up on tour By Luke Voogt Australian country music legend Lee Kernaghan says he “can’t think of a better place than Geelong” to start his latest Victorian tour. “It’s one of the ultimate places to play in all of Australia,” he told the Indy this week. “It’s that legendary country crowd that keeps me coming back year after year.” The Boy from the Bush has hit the road on his 25th Anniversary Tour and Geelong will be his first Victorian stop this month. “You can usually tell the audience by the car park,” he said. “I’ve seen the finest array of 4WD and utes at my shows in Geelong - it’s great talking with drivers of some of those rigs.” Kernaghan reckons he might even get a few song ideas from the local crowd. He wrote one of his favourites, I Milk Cows, after meeting a farmer in the car park at a Shepparton show. “So many of the songs I have written have come about from just meeting people and having a yarn,” he said. “I carry a notebook with me all the time, and I’ve got hundreds of ideas - you never know where the next song is coming from.” Either way, the crowd will get some new songs with Kernaghan set to release his latest album this month. “What’s really exciting about this particular show in Geelong is we’re there about five days before I release my new album,” he said. Kernaghan expects his next gig, at the Gate-

way Hotel on 18 March, to be a bit more raucous than the previous theatre performances in Geelong. “It’s more of a party atmosphere,” he said. “But whenever I get on stage - whether it’s a little outback town in western Queensland or 50,000 people at the Gympie muster - the feeling is still the same.” Kernaghan said age had not slowed him down. If anything, the 53-year-old is a “bit more arched up” with the Wolfe Brothers Band in tow. “Making music with them has been an absolute highlight of my life. The boys take no prisoners when they hit the stage, and I’ve got to be up for it.” Despite winning ARIAs and Australian of the Year, a pyrotechnic mishap the Gympie Muster remains the highlight of Kernaghan’s 25-year career. To “impress the crowd” Kernaghan strapped devices to his guitar shoot sparks “40 feet into the air”. “My roadie strapped them on back to front, so when I ignited them I also ignited myself.” “I hoicked the guitar out into the mosh pit, and I remember it disappearing like a smoking, flaming wreck from a Mad Max movie.” Kernaghan assured organisers at the Gateway Hotel that there would be no pyro at his latest gig. “But I’ve still got plenty of tricks up my sleeve,” he said.

ROCKIN': Brenton Perry, left, gets up to no good with the My Echo lads.
The Victorian Fashion Festival will come to Geelong this month through two documentaries exploring woolly wonders and the consequences of clothing. In Yarn Icelandic filmmakers Una Lorenzen, Heather Millard and Thordur Jonsson meet the artists redefining knitting and crochet. The film weaves together wool graffiti artists, circus performers, and structural designers bringing yarn out of the house and into the world. The visually striking film looks at the women making a creative stance while building one of modern art’s hottest trends. “To me, crochet is my language,” says one artist in the film’s trailer, “it’s the way I communicate with my audience.” Crochet-covered models and woolly-tailed mermaids feature in this colourful film, which airs at the National Wool Museum on Wednesday 8 March. Former Blur bassist turned cheesemaker, Alex James, looks at the enormous human and environmental costs of the clothing industry in Slowing Down Fast Fashion. “In Britain, we discard a million tonnes of clothes a year,” James says during the film, “and replace them with two tonnes of new clothing.” Slowing Down Fast Fashion airs at the National Wool Museum on 15 March as part of the Fibre and Fashion film series.
a health scare and doctors suspected he had lymphoma. “It was a pretty horrific time to be honest,” he said. “But it gave me a lot of time to reflect on what I wanted to with my music and my life.” A few months later doctors discovered it was an infection, telling Perry “you’re not going to drop dead”. Perry moved to Geelong about 18 months ago with his wife.

By Luke Voogt North Geelong’s Brenton Perry says juggling fulltime work with touring in a band is worth the struggle. The construction worker is the lead singer and guitarist for My Echo, which shot to fame last month in Triple J’s unearthed competition. “It’s funny, we spent so long wanting to be played on Triple J,” Perry said. “It’s sort of when we gave up caring that they began to notice. “To be honest it doesn’t really change anything, it just gets a bit of weight off your shoulders getting airplay on arguably Australia’s best radio station.” The 31-year-old spoke to The Indy this week before the band’s Geelong show, following their recent tour of Adelaide. “We spent almost every hour of those days driving,” he said. “It takes its toll. But it’s what we want to do.” Perry’s love of music began as he grew up in Bendigo, when his mum bought him a guitar and lessons. “I just wanted to skate for the rest of my life but she forced me to go to this guitar lesson I didn’t want to do,” he said. “It turned out to be the best thing that happened to me.” My Echo formed in 2011 from the “remainders of another band”, with Perry and another Bendigo local and two from Traralgon. “When that band shut up shop we sort of made the decision to keep doing it because we loved it,” Perry said. “We feel more like brothers than a band I suppose. We’ve done a few EPs - It just took ages to get a full-length (album) out.” The band took a short hiatus when Perry had
Film’s in fashion
“It was a bit of a no-brainer really,” he said. “I absolutely love it down here.” He was looking forward to bringing his distinctively Aussie vocals to the Workers Club on Saturday 4 March. “Now it’s my home town and I’ve made some new friends here,” he said. “We might be feeling a little dusty - it’s the night after our Melbourne launch. The band probably parties a little too hard.”

Bone hunt is on Surf Coast fossil finders will get a chance to dive into history when a “Night At The Museum” comes to Torquay. Palaeontologist Dr Erich Fitzgerald will travel with the Museum Victoria road show to the Australian National Surfing Museum (ASNM) on Saturday 4 March. “There were very recent discoveries of fossils by keen-eyed members of the public, which are the first finds of 15-million-year-old whales on the Surf Coast,” Dr Fitzgerald said. “These crucial finds open a new frontier for palaeontology in Victoria, lighting the way to exciting scientific advances.” The senior museum curator and his team will continue the hunt for whale fossils in the Surf
Coast until 9 March. Dr Fitzgerald encouraged residents to bring along fossils for them to identify. ANSM curator Craig Baird and his girlfriend Yumi Morishita found 15-million-year-old whale ribs while they walked their dog at Whites Beach. “I have surfed over that rock,” Mr Baird said. “It’s amazing to think that we are surrounded by such history.” ANSM has 25 million-year-old fossils on display, including the articulated spine ribs of the small whale Janjucetus, found by surfer Charles Brooks at Bells Beach in 2009. Surf Coast Shire encouraged those interested in the free event to phone 5261 4606 or email cbaird@surfcoast.vic.gov.au, as seats were limited.

Like nothing else we have seen before, the new Toyota C-HR.
Toyota injects the wow factor By Ewan Kennedy And now for something completely different. Toyota C-HR answers the critics who say the Japanese giant makes nothing but boringly sensible vehicles. Akio Toyoda, the current head of the automotive company started by his grandfather, issued orders to his stylists, and you see the result here. Toyota C-HR is like nothing else we have seen before, with sharp diagonal lines, inside and out, standout wheelarches, and a rear that’s so complex it initially confuses the mind. Even better, the C-HR is offered in interesting colours to challenge the 500 shades of grey haunting our roads these days. Red, orange, blue, even two-tone schemes let owners make a real statement although, it has to be admitted, there are greys in there as well so Toyota can cover all all bases. The C-HR fills a long standing gap in the company’s line-up. Though Toyota is extremely strong in every other area of the Australian 4WD and SUV market, a small-medium contender was missing - because the RAV4 had grown to become a family wagon not a trendy small vehicle. The delay was explained by Toyota C-HR chief engineer Hiroyuki Koba who honoured Australia by flying down to introduce us to his new car. It had intended to introduce the C-HR several years back and work began in 2010. But part way through the design things were halted to make it part of an all-new lightweight platform. A smart decision because the light, strong body feels really taut and precise on the road. Power for the C-HR comes from an all-new four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine displacing 1.2 litres. A thoroughly modern unit, it produces torque of 185 Newton metres, starting from a low 1500 revs and running up to 4000 rpm, so most drivers will be experiencing top torque virtually all the time. Peak power is just 85 kilowatts. But it’s torque that talks and during our drive program from north Melbourne to the Yarra Valley and back to Tullamarine airport we were most impressed by it. It pulls strongly from low revs with minimal turbo lag due to its small capacity. The great majority of buyers are likely to opt for the CVT automatic (with seven pretend gears
for pseudo-manual operation), which is a shame because we spent a couple of hundred kilometres in a C-HR with a six-speed manual gearbox. This is a delightful unit with well chosen ratios and a slick action. If you’re feeling lazy you don’t even have to rev match the gearchanges in the manual - the car will do it for you. But if you don’t like that and want to take full responsibility of the gearbox you can switch that feature off. Chief engineer Koba is a competent weekend car racer, in single-wheelers among other weapons, and has total understanding of what ‘real’ drivers want from their cars. Handling is excellent, with the C-HR stepping in to maximise road grip by sensing what each wheel is doing. This is becoming increasingly common in high-performance sportscars, even in Grand Prix cars, and it’s interesting to see it making its way down to machines like this sporty Toyota SUV/hatch/coupe - whatever you want to call it. An advantage of electronics in the suspension is that ride comfort is maintained. The little Toyota covered fairly rough stages of dirt road during our media drive day and shrugged off the surfaces with ease. There is good interior room for four adults, with the back seats providing surprisingly good head and legroom. However, the swoop-down roof means the back seats are set pretty low and are as comfortable as you might expect. The combination of lowset seats and a very high waistline will cause problems with the view out for children in the back. Perhaps take them along on your personal pre-purchase test drive to check on this. Did you spot the rear door handles in our photos? They’re up there near the roof if you didn’t … Toyota C-HR is now on sale at all Toyota dealers. It’s priced from a recommended retail of $26,990 for the six-speed manual front-wheeldrive C-HR. Another $2,000 is added for the automatic, and a further $2,000 for the of all-wheel drive powertrain. The topline C-HR, named the Koba in honour of the chief engineer, has 18-inch alloys, leatheraccented seats, keyless entry and start, LED lamps front and rear and a clever nanoe system that moisturises cabin air. The C-HR Koba is priced at $35,290.

George passes on his passion to keep Volvos keeping on A lifetime of Volvo knowledge is being passed along to the new breed of automotive technician at Geelong West Automotive. Lifelong Volvo fan and unabashed admirer, George Bellingham, is passing along his love of the Swedish marque to leading technician Joe Atkinson. Joe is already well versed in the working of top German automakers Volkswagen, Audi and Mercedes Benz. With George’s tutelage, Joe is expanding his repertoire to becoming a Volvo specialist. George worked with former well-known Volvo dealer Trevor Stanley and the Peck and Stokes dealership before opening his own workshop in Belmont. Now it’s time to pass along his store of knowledge after specialising in Volvos for more than 40 years. “What George doesn’t know about Volvos isn’t worth knowing,” agrees Joe. “He has taken the slogan of Volvo for Life literally and he lives and breathes them.” Along with his vast knowledge, George has also brought his dealership level computer equipment, including the Volvo Vida offering full guided diagnosis, spare parts and technical training. Geelong West Automotive uses only quality or genuine parts, following manufacturer guidelines. The specialised Volvo workshop offers choice of where to service and repair Volvos with peace of mind, while maintaining the manufacturer’s warranty. Whether it’s for business or pleasure, Truck Car Rentals has transport requirements covered. Truck Car Rentals has an extensive range of vehicles to suit a variety of requirements, owner Graeme says. “Being a small local operation, our prices are more competitive than bigger companies. “Plus, we can offer a high level of customer service because we know the local needs.” Truck Car Rentals recently expanded its fleet to include 46 seater buses, adding to its 12 and 22 seaters. “A lot of schools around Geelong use our services when they need extra buses,” Graeme says. “We have a lot of local clubs and groups hire the smaller buses as well as families for get-togethers or outings.” Truck Car Rentals has several enclosed trucks suitable for do-it-yourself removals, requiring only a car licence. A range of light commercials and vans, tray trucks, cars and single-axle trailers for the weekend handyman are also available. “Our rates are lower during the week so that adds flexibility to small business vehicle requirements,” Graeme says. Truck Car Rentals also has everything up to prime movers and trailers, great for logistics businesses trying to cope with extra demand. “If your vehicle is in for a service or repairs, Truck Car Rentals has the answer. “Whatever your needs, we can assist in finding the right vehicle for the job.” Truck Car Rentals is at 215 Station St, Corio, phone 5275 8288 or visit truckcarrentals.com.au.

SPORT Cats blitzed out in crash LOCAL CRICKET Jim Timberlake Geelong Cricket Club’s hopes of finishing the season on a positive note were dealt a crushing blow last Saturday when they put in one of their worst performances in memory. Batting first against Footscray Edgewater, the Cats fell to 7/17 early before Mitchell Reid was able to arrest the carnage briefly, digging deep to score 36. But with a lack of willing allies to help him, Reid was the last man out for a terrible team total of just 57 in just 19.2 overs. Footscray Edgewater then batted for 66 overs and racked up 4/256 before declaring. Brenton McDonald managed to pick up three wickets to take his season tally to 31 in what has been a lone hand at times. With seven overs still to play on day one, Geelong batted again and limped to stumps at 2/19. The challenge tomorrow for the last day of the season will simply be to restore some pride, bat
for as long as possible, and stave off an outright defeat. In the Geelong Cricket Association, while South Barwon has given themselves a glimmer of hope in still contesting this seasons finals, their fate may well have been taken out of their own hands anyway, as the teams they are looking to replace in the top six have put themselves in a good position. Fifth placed Murgheboluc look to have booked their spot with a big first innings total of 296 against Geelong City, Greg Holmes top scoring with 74. And sixth-placed Newtown and Chilwell have already taken first innings points in their game against Bell Post Hill, bowling out the Panthers for just 83, before cruising to 4/172 at stumps. So all of that means that despite South Barwon’s valiant effort of making 217 against ladder leader Grovedale, a win will simply not be enough to propel them into the six, and unless Richie Oliver and his Geelong City teammates can somehow beat Murgheboluc, the Swans may have left
their run too late. In Division two, Alexander Thomson are on the verge of pulling off what would have been considered an impossible task at Christmas, needing just a further 38 runs with eight wickets in hand to take the points against Geelong West and charge into the top six at the last possible moment. The Vikings can once again thank star import Sean Tindale for the win, after he collected 5/45 as West were dismissed for just 96. In reply, a couple of early hiccups weren’t enough to stop the charge into the finals, a dream that should come true tomorrow. On the flipside, Torquay put in an abysmal effort in their virtual elimination final against Marshall, dismissed for just 90 thanks to a six wicket haul to Brad Greenwood. In reply, the Bears cruised to first innings points, meaning they can get some valuable batting practice tomorrow, while Torquay will ponder what might have been in a season that started so brightly, but fell away dramatically at the end.
Anglers ‘lured’ to Queenscliff ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Queenscliff drew the attention of anglers over the past week, with everything from bluefin tuna to whiting on the chew. The grass beds east of the harbour held excellent fishing for whiting. Tenderised squid baits caught fish over 40cm, along with the odd flathead. Gone Fishing Charters’ Chris Vasilevski again guided his clients onto large numbers of whiting and pinkies at Queenscliff. Moves of 50m produced more fish when the bite slowed. Squid kept anglers entertained in the bight while supplying ideal kingfish bait. Jigging and trolling The Rip produced kings, some up to 1m. Anglers found tuna just out from The Rip and further down the coast. Trolling small skited lures worked well, while casting stick bait lures to boil ups on the surface was also successful. Trelly’s Geelong’s Adam Van Der Lugt fished land-based in Queenscliff Harbour again, landing a bag-limit catch of squid, some of impressive size, too. Adam’s 2.5size jigs were able to hit the bottom almost, which was his key to landing numbers of squid on the slower-running tides. Clifton Springs held good numbers of pinkie snapper on the spoil grounds and some larger specimens down toward Alcoa Pier. Whiting were taken out from the old Dell. The Barwon River estuary produced some well-conditioned silver trevally, while keen fishos seeking elusive mulloway caught fish to 90cm but found the going hit and miss. I took a run up the estuary on Saturday, catching some well-conditioned bream to 44cm. Anglers spinning for Australian salmon from the rock platforms between Lorne and Apollo Bay enjoyed impressive captures. The lead-up to high tide was best, with lures like the Sea Iron Pelacus and Sluks getting the job done. Western district anglers kept boating huge numbers of redfin from Lake Purrumbete, along with the odd trout. Next door, trolling Lake Bullen Merri produced Chinook salmon averaging 1kg. Anglers spinning with spoon-type lures from the bank managed rainbow trout. The Barwon River in Geelong continued fishing well for smaller redfin. Anglers casing lures like Atomic Hardz shads in colour 17 around the snags banked some good numbers. Carp were also grassed, with fish to 6kg taken around Breakwater. Next week’s forecast weather should provide opportunities to hunt tuna off Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads with small skirted lures like Richter Jelly Babes. Snapper anglers could try Clifton Springs, while freshwater enthusiasts should head to Lake Purrumbete for redfin and trophysize Chinook salmon.
CARVING IT UP: Bella Wilson surfs to victory at Gunnamatta Ocean Beach.
Locals on board for wins on Mornington Peninsula Locals surfed to victory in round two of the Victorian Junior Series on the Mornington Peninsula, with Jan Juc’s Bella Wilson winning the under16s. The lead changed multiple times in Wilson’s final against Australian under-14 champion Sage Goldsbury, of Phillip Island. But she carried her lead into the final minutes, extending it with a final 6.73 ride, finishing with 13.73 ahead of Goldsbury’s 13. “It was actually really fun out there,“ Wilson said. “We didn’t have too many big sets wash 30 GEELONG INDY Friday, 3 March, 2017
through the line-up and I’m really happy to come in with a few good scores.“ Point Lonsdale’s Bea Conroy finished third and Jan Juc’s Angelique Kefalas finished fourth. Swells higher than 3m pounded Gunnamatta Ocean Beach Saturday, forcing a delay before a reduction in wave heights and more favourable winds Sunday. Barwon Heads’ Ellie Harrison dominated the under-14s girls with a score of 14.50, with Jan Juc’s Jazz Wylie and Mia Huppatz placing second and fourth. The Huxtable brothers again shone, with Xavi-
er winning the under-16s and Ethan the under14s. Jan Juc’s Indi White and Cole Fox took third and fourth in the under-16s. Barwon Heads’ Zeph Lamperd, and Jan Juc’s Patrick Hughes and Hudson Green rounded out the top four in the under-14s. Torquay’s Jayden Schram and Jan Juc’s Kenta Fergusson finished third and fourth in the under-18 boys. The series will come to Jan Juc for its final round on 13 and 14 May following the Rip Curl Pro in April.
