The Victorian Liberal Party has placed its faith in Bridget Vallence to lead the safe seat of Evelyn into the future, after she trumped six fellow candidates at a pre-selection forum on Saturday 4 March. Vallence will lead the campaign for 2018, with long-time incumbent Christine Fyffe announcing her intention to retire late last year. Among the candidates were Ms Fyffe’s son, Scott, and Grant Hutchinson, whom Vallence, a Goodyear procurement manager, trumped in the final round (39 votes to 31). Within Liberal Party ranks, it had been no secret leader Matthew Guy had been seeking to address the gender gap within his party. Ms Vallence’s pre-selection comes after men dominating recent Liberal pre-selections, including for the seats of Brighton, Nepean, Narracan and Burwood. Media outlets such as Fairfax have reported Vallence’s pre-selection will provide a boost for Mr Guy before next year’s election. Late last year, Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe announced her present term in the seat would be her last. With pre-selection for sitting members due to open next month, Ms Fyffe needed to make the call on her future. Ms Fyffe told the ‘Mail’ she felt that her time was up because she couldn’t commit to another term, which, with state elections in 2018, would mean a further six years in the role. The Liberal MP first won the seat of Evelyn in 1999 and has enjoyed strong support over that time, though she did lose the seat in 2002, only to win it back in 2006. Ms Fyffe said the decision was entirely hers and not driven by party pressure. “Matthew Guy left the decision entirely up to me; he’s a terrific leader and has been very supportive,” she said. “I just felt that six years was going to be too much for me ... the time is right.” Ms Fyffe could only have dreamed of such contributions when she arrived in Australia as a ‘Ten Pound Pom’ from the United Kingdom in 1967. She started life in Australia in migration housing in Nunawading, before developing the award-winning Yarra Burn Winery and Restaurant at Yarra Junction.

Internationally acclaimed performer, Andrea Creighton. 165546

Hills are home By Peter Douglas One of the world’s top musical theatre exponents is now calling the hills home, after moving to Upper Ferntree Gully just months ago. Accomplished singer Andrea Creighton’s move follows more than 10 years of touring around the globe, performing with some of the world’s biggest production companies, on some of the world’s biggest stages. Her extensive resume features lead performances in much-loved classics, such as the role of Carlotta Guidicelli in ‘Phantom of the Opera’. She has performed alongside the likes of Anthony Warlow

and is a recipient of numerous top awards. So why settle in the hills? The New Zealand-born Creighton told the ‘Mail’ it was time to establish some roots and that she felt a deep connection to the region. “I was first drawn to the area after a brief visit, and feeling lost and uninspired by the flat landscape of Melbourne,” she said. “There’s just something about this region, there’s a very strong sense of community here ... then there’s the beautiful hills and the landscapes.” Though she purchased her property two years ago, she’s only been in the area for a few

months but is quickly feeling at home. Despite the hills move, theatre lovers needn’t worry, as she plans to continue hitting the stages and delighting audiences. At present, she’s set to star in the role of Little Buttercup in the Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera, HMAS Pinafore, which will be shown at The Athenaeum and at Monash University’s Robert Blackwood Hall. Even better for budding young singers, she has started up the Andrea Creighton Voice Studio. For more information, check out her Facebook page (search Andrea Creighton Voice Studio).

Gift of a green thumb By Peter Douglas Top neighbour and Olinda resident, Michael Shane, has paid tribute to fellow local Debbie Beal, who has been completing some volunteer gardening within the township. Michael said he regularly walks the area and has been observing the work of Ms Beal, who has been diligently weeding and planting at the corner of Parsons Lane and Monash Avenue. Michael said she had volunteered her own time. “It’s great to see the community spirit shining through. No one has asked her to do this; she just wants to make her community a better place to live in. It’d be great to see more people like Debbie.” 165481

Prepare for grassfire If you live in a suburb near grasslands, you’re at risk of ire. If you live directly next to parks or paddocks and a grassire starts, walk at least two streets back. If you live two or more streets away, stay where you are, grassires are unlikely to spread into built up areas. Stay alert and monitor conditions. Don’t drive, visibility may be poor, accidents are likely, and you could block emergency services.

Bloomin’ idea for garden By Jesse Graham A Lilydale man with a passion for gardening is hoping to jump-start a community garden in town, with a small patch of sunflowers coming into bloom over summer. Late last year, Lilydale man Paul Dempsey planted sunflowers along the path that connects Lilydale Lake to the station precinct end part of town, adjacent to Taco Bill. He told the Mail on 8 February that the sunflowers, now standing about two metres tall, are the beginnings of a plan to form a community garden in the area. “This is an ideal site, because it’s central to Lilydale, visible, accessible and most valuable for encouraging confidence in community garden,” Mr Dempsey said. “I’ve planted fruit trees in there for the long term, thinking it’s ... important to grow as much food as possible as close to community as possible. “I thought they would inspire people ... which has been the case - people love the sunflowers, the bees love them.” He said the sunflowers had already started discussions, with people expressing support for the garden. Mr Dempsey said the next step would be forming an incorporated group and speaking to council to make the garden official. The end goal, he said, would be a group holding seasonal working bees, cultivating different kinds of edible plants to beautify the space and provide food for people after fresh, local produce. “Up in Daylesford, most people came along (to working bees) and just talked ... occasionally, people came along with a lot of energy and wanted to do a lot of work,” he said. “It’s great to have a place where people can harness that good energy.”

Paul Dempsey in among sunflowers at the spot he hopes to launch a community garden. 164850 Yarra Ranges Council’s parks and environment manager David Harper said Mr Dempsey had approval to carry out “minimal planting to brighten up the garden area”. “We are sure that the people who use the path will continue to appreci-

ate the colour the sunflowers provide,” he said. “This sort of detailed maintenance and planting work can only be achieved through volunteer time and commitment - community gardens require a contingent of volunteer com-

munity members to maintain them in order for them to be successful.” “The location is important to ensure the community is engaged in a space and is a big consideration for council when reviewing the requests.” As for the sunflowers, Mr Dempsey

said after cockatoos have eaten the seeds, he will use the plants as mulch to grow more plants - and a few more sunflowers. Anyone with interested in supporting the garden project can email paul. dempsey@hotmail.com

Turn this road trash into cash By Peter Douglas Clean Up Australia Day came early to Macclesfield on Thursday 2 March when a local team from Emerald cleaned up 8km of the Macclesfield to Yellingbo Road. Cleaning just one side of the road, the team picked up 338 drink containers. Afterwards, they displayed the cans and bottles outside Macclesfield CFA to show the scope of this problem.

Peter Cook, from the Australians for Refunds on Cans and Bottles (AFROCAB), said the government needed to take notice. “To fix this problem, the team thinks the government should give Victoria a 10-cent refund system like in South Australia, the Northern Territory and soon NSW,” he said. “It would reduce litter, increase recycling and enable individuals, charities and community groups (like Macclesfield CFA) to make cash from trash.”

Bank on it By Peter Douglas After the announcement the Hills Hub project in Emerald will likely go to tender before the end of this year, the Dandenong Ranges Community Bank Group has praised the level of co-operation between stakeholders. This includes between the Cardinia Shire Council, individuals, groups, and the state and federal governments. Most stakeholders have been involved in the consultation process, leading to the recent announcement. Dandenong Ranges Community Bank board chairman, John Waters, said the board was excited the project had progressed to this stage. “Our company committed $250,000 towards this project, following our community fo-

rum held in Emerald in 2010, and is confident that the community will benefit and be strengthened by this impressive new facility,” he said. “It is a tribute to the local community and the advisory group that everyone adhered to the process to ensure a satisfactory outcome, which I am sure will produce an outstanding community facility for Emerald and surrounding districts.” Mr Waters congratulated all those who had advocated hard for the development. The recent announcement came after the endorsement of Design Scenario 4, with detailed designs are now set to be prepared. Scenario 4 supports a ground floor hall in the new facility, as well as the demolition of the old hall.

Initially, a community survey asked residents to nominate their preferred design scenario from four options. The architect had developed the design scenarios after extensive consultation with the Hub Advisory Committee. The scenarios were posted at several locations and on the shire’s website, while the architect held presentations for community members. From the responses received, Scenario 4 gained the most support (98 votes), with Scenario 1 (75 votes), Scenario 3 (32 votes) and Scenario 2 (30 votes) all gaining some backing. Cardinia Shire Council’s Team Leader Community Development, Tim Cooper, said recently he was pleased the project was progressing.

A roof over kids’ heads Families in Ferny Creek are one step closer to getting updated facilities for their children. Victorian Minister for Education, James Merlino, visited Ferny Creek Primary School on Friday 3 March to announce the school will receive $285,000 from the School Pride and Sports Fund to build a roof for the school’s netball court. Ferny Creek has limited covered outdoor space, which makes playing outdoor sport a challenge in poor weather. The new room will create an additional play space and shelter for students, and help them to stay active all year round. Mr Merlino said the initiative would be a coup for the school. “This new roof will allow teachers and students at Ferny Creek Primary School to enjoy playing netball come rain, hail or shine,” Mr Merlino said. “I congratulate those who have been selected as school leaders. “I hope they do their best to set a great example to the other students at Ferny Creek.” The $16 million School Pride and Sports Fund helps to strengthen community pride in schools and build sporting facilities for students. The fund forms part of the Education State tar-

Council signs on for hub By Peter Douglas Yarra Ranges Council will enter into a lease agreement with Inspiro over the to-be-constructed Belgrave Community Hub facility. At its 28 February meeting, council unanimously supported the move, which sets in stone a 10-year joint agreement, with options for four further 10-year terms. The lease will allow Inspiro to use the premises for provision of primary health and community health services on a not-for-profit basis, as well as for a community hub. The agreement comes after much advocacy work, as well as a direct contribution of $250,000 from Inspiro, in addition to the donation of the land, which is valued around $930,000. Cr Fiona McAllister said it was fantastic to see further progress on this much-needed facility, which is due for practical completion next year. “In my time as mayor, I spent certainly a lot of time with Ms (Ali) Wastie, Inspiro and others, advocating to get the funding,” Cr McAllister said. “So, to see it at this point is really exciting. “It’s been a long time in the planning and getting the money, and talking to the community and the providers.” Upon completion, the hub will include allied health, aged care services, and disability and dental services. In addition, there will be significant space available for community groups, with Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Services (DRERS) already securing a home in the building. Though, there is some concern within the community about the particulars of the lease. Particularly around the amount of control Inspiro will wield, as well as a

significantly lower annual rent offered to community groups. In addressing council, Betty Marsden, from the Save the Dandenongs League, was concerned the reports weren’t detailed enough, and that the lease may negatively affect community groups. Ms Marsden said there was “virtually no mention” of community groups in the report, which needed to be rectified before the lease was signed. “The rent of $277 per annum is certainly very small rent,” she said. “I’m sure you’ve got reasons for it, but we don’t know what they are ... I don’t know how much you’re likely to reveal. “The South Belgrave Landcare Group pays $500 per annum for two rooms for storage at Birdsland; Monbulk Historical Society pays $500 per annum for a room and storage at the Monbulk Hub. “This is a very small sum for a building that’s cost the best part of $10 million.” Ms Marsden urged council to speak up now, because the power seemed to be more aligned with Inspiro. In reply, the council’s social and economic development director Ali Wastie said the fees were in line with council policy. “It’s also consistent with leases and licences that we’ve put in with other places such as Kimberley Place at Chirnside Park,” Ms Wastie said. “However, it’s important to note that Inspiro have contributed significantly to the development. “Both in capital costs ... and also with their land.” Ms Wastie said the partnership approach is designed to reduce the cost to the ratepayer.

Cr Fiona McAllister said it was fantastic to see the project advancing. 163243

Letters Finger on crime

Cash bowls in to help By Peter Douglas Monbulk bowlers recently enjoyed a sausage sizzle and then competed in a Wednesday social bowls event. And all the money raised went to the Monbulk Fire Brigade. Mike Gill, who organises the Wednesday bowls competition, thanked the bowlers for their contributions and handed over the giant-sized cheque with some appreciative words to the fire brigade officers. “Volunteers at Monbulk Fire Brigade

are dedicated members who make endless contributions to support our community before, during and after disasters,” he said. “At this time of the year, we are very much aware that we are in a high-risk fire area and we rely on our local firefighting volunteers. “But then, there’s all the other jobs they do, like attending car accidents and rope rescues, that go on all year round. “And we mustn’t forget that the training for the brigade members never stops.

“This money we raised, with a sausage sizzle and bowls competition, is going to a good cause and is a way for the bowlers to say thankyou to the fire brigade volunteers.” Sally Rutzou, Treasurer of Monbulk Fire Brigade, accepted the cheque on behalf of the brigade, and thanked the bowlers for again giving their support. “It’s really great to see the bowlers return the commitment to our local community by this fund-raising effort,” she said.

“This money will provide more resources for our emergency volunteer services.” The Executive Manager of Monbulk Fire Brigade, Peter Edyvane, then invited the bowlers to an open night down at the fire brigade, where the bowlers, friends and families can watch the brigade officers go through their tricks. “You can watch our brigade officers chop a car apart with the jaws of life, learn about our emergency gear and even get your photo taken in the fire truck,” he said.

Late last year, I asked the community to give me their views on local crime. The vast majority of respondents to my survey clearly supported more frontline police in our valley. More recently, in the parliament hearings, Victoria’s top policeman, Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton, confirmed the number of police per capita in Victoria had been cut. He also relayed his members’ frustration with the bail system, being forced to arrest and then re-arrest the same alleged offenders, again and again, only to see them released and back on the streets. This sentiment is also backed by locals voicing their concerns with me. The justice system is clearly in a crisis due to weak sentencing, watered down bail laws and cuts to the frontline police. Daniel Andrews has his priorities wrong; he spends taxpayers’ money freely, yet ignores one of the most critical areas, policing and protecting citizens. The Liberals are committed to tackling crime head-on. Under a Matthew Guy Government, we will toughen up our bail laws, support deporting criminals who are not citizens, put the rights of victims before those of criminals and reinstate Neighbourhood Watch funding. We should all be able to walk our streets safely; it is time law-abiding Victorians were put first. Christine Fyffe, Member for Evelyn.

College nurtures children’s talents If you ask a child, “what would you like to be when you grow up”, they will often have an answer on the tip of their tongue. Some know exactly what it is they want to do and find out what they need to do to achieve it. Others will have a list, they may change their mind a few times, but as

they grow and develop their list will be refined. When speaking to Mount Lilydale Mercy College’s principal, Philip Morison, he will tell you how each one of us has been bestowed with an array of talents. People start to sense these talents even as children.

Those who are present are here for a reason, whether your talent be in the sciences, working to find a cure for cancer; a gifted actor or musician entertaining audiences, filling others with joy and laughter; a member of our defence forces, defending our rights to freedom and peace; or a trades person that makes our homes sturdy and gives

us light - each of us have gifts that can be used to serve our communities, both local and global. Students at Mount Lilydale Mercy College are encouraged to develop a love of God, a love of life, a love of others, and a love of learning. They are provided with a supportive environment in which they can discov-

er their talents. Also provided are excellent facilities, a broad curriculum and co-curricular activities to nurture these talents. You are both invited and encouraged to visit the college, experience mercy, hospitality and see for yourself how the college can help your child to let their talents shine.

Mater Christi College is committed to innovative educational practice. 165661

A vibrant, inclusive and warm community is assured for students. 165661

Master key to unlock jobs How can the stakeholders best prepare their students for their future? The disruptive impact of new technologies brings this question into sharper focus for parents and educators everywhere. “Mater Christi College has always been committed to innovative educational practice. We firmly believe it is imperative to prepare students for their futures,” principal Mary Fitz-Gerald said.

The future workforce needs are difficult to anticipate. Last July, ‘Four Corners’ investigated the future of work in Australia. It highlighted the prediction that ‘more than five million Australian jobs will simply disappear in the next 15 years as a result of technology.’ “Twenty-first century skills underpin curriculum programs already through a focus on transferable learn-

ing skills such as communication, collaboration, creativity, self-management, problem solving and critical thinking. Yet we saw that we needed to go further to foster creative, independent learners and so emerged the ’Discover’ program for Year 9,” Ms Fitz-Gerald said. Discover embraces project-based learning through activities as diverse as rock-climbing, creating podcasts, building and programming robots,

workshops with experts and history tours with local Indigenous elders. As well as their regular core studies, Year 9 students explore five themes: Challenge, Expression, Adventure, Identity and Communication. “It has been a very smooth start due to the thorough preparation by teachers and our student-centred culture which encourages and celebrates the ‘can do’ energy of girls. It is really exciting to see the

girls so engaged,” Ms Fitz-Gerald said. A visit to Mater Christi College will enable your family to witness this vibrant, inclusive and warm community where girls feel safe, build lifelong friendships and become intelligent and reflective learners. For more information about the Discover program or to arrange a tour, visit materchristi.edu.au or call Registrar Kylie Lee on 9754 6611.

Mater Christi College, Belgrave Excellence in all-girls education

Mater Christi College students are motivated learners who graduate with region leading academic and vocational results and the confidence to pursue their dreams. A visit to Mater Christi College will enable your family to witness this vibrant, inclusive and warm community where girls feel safe, build lifelong friendships and become intelligent and reflective learners.

Individualised learning for each student. 165669

Empowering young minds

The students participated in ‘Thank You Fireys’ National Red Balloon day. 165662

School says ta to fireys St Bernadette’s Primary school in The Basin has welcomed the opportunity to participate in ‘Thank You Fireys’ National Red Balloon day by purchasing 235 red balloons, which represents a big thank you from every student in the school.

They were proud to pay tribute to the brave firefighters across Australia and in particular to those in the local area. The profits from the sale of ‘Thank you Fireys’ balloons will go back to Victorian Fire Services.

There is a renewed focus on quality teaching and student learning at Our Lady’s School. While maintaining its high standard of care and emphasis on student wellbeing, Our Lady’s School continues to provide a comprehensive curriculum within a stimulating and engaging learning environment. Shaped by their Catholic identity, they respect the sacredness of each person. They seek to nurture the development of young minds, empowering them to enrich the world with meaning and hope. In 2017, they continue to individualise learning for each student. The use of digital technologies to complement the learning that takes place is highly valued at Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School. Prospective parents are welcome to attend the open mornings, or call the school for a more personalised tour with the new principal, Ross Williams.

See what Troy ‘carries around’ By Peter Douglas Award-winning country musician Troy Cassar-Daley has packed up his ‘Things I Carry Around’ tour and is set to deliver this gem for hills audiences. After last year releasing an album and book of the same name, Cassar-Daley has developed a new show to complement the success, the result being a performance set for the York on Lilydale on Saturday 18 March. ‘Things I Carry Around’ has received almost universal acclaim among the country music scene, debuting at number five on the ARIA national charts and number one on the ARIA country music chart. The release is his second top-five debut within two years, and one of his more personal offerings from throughout his 30-year career. Now, Cassar-Daley told the ‘Mail’ he couldn’t wait to share it with hills audiences. “I just want to show off the baby now and deliver it for the crowds,” he said. “This show is very different musically and in pre-

sentation, there’s no drummer, but I’ve still got my long-time bassist and man on keys. “I saw Paul Kelly and Shane Howard play shows with no drums, so there’s inspiration from that. “The stage has a couch and audiences have commented that it was more personal, like being in my own home.” Cassar-Daley said the new material for the album developed organically and almost seamlessly. “Much of the song material has come from the book, so it comes from very personal experiences,” he said. “It was a very cathartic thing; it’s one of the easiest albums that we’ve put together.” The book release represents a huge creative shift for Cassar-Daley, but one which he and his band of loyal fans has embraced. ‘What I Carry Around’ shares stories about his roots, his inspirations and his struggles while carving an impressive career. For more details, visit www.yorkonlilydale.com.au. Troy Cassar-Daley will perform new material for local audiences. 165604

The rise of the machines By Jesse Graham The Mail’s own resident film critic has made his second foray into the world of published fiction, releasing a short story collection on Tuesday, 28 February. Healesville resident and freelance writer, Seth Lukas Hynes released his self-published book, Transsentient - a collection of 13 short stories focusing on Isaac Asimov’s three laws of robotics and a future where “the line between human and machine is blurred”. He said the idea for the book came after an essay for his honours degree and an interest in the cyberpunk genre. “It’s a collection of cyberpunk short stories, set in the mid-to-late 21st century, and the stories form an over-arching narrative that explores the ethics of trans-humanism - expanding the human condition via technology,” Mr Hynes said. “I would say it’s all about ro-

Healesville writer and author Seth Hynes with his recently-published book. 165499

Picture: JESSE GRAHAM bots and artificial intelligences, computers thinking for themselves and what rights they deserve - whether they will receive human rights, or their own kind of rights or a completely different kind of right altogether.” Asimov’s laws are that a robot may not injure a human being or allow a human being to come to harm, must obey orders

given by humans and must protect its own existence, so long as no action under the second or third law break any other. Mr Hynes said he started work on the book in December 2015, after releasing a free book full of stories based on Dr Who, and details right down to the page numbers were done manually. He said that, though he typds out his weekly film reviews for the Mail, he wrote his fiction with pen and paper - this, he said, helped with reviewing when his words make it onto a screen. “If you read what you’ve typed out later, if something sounds stupid when you say it, you know you’ve made a typo,” he said. Anyone interested in a copy can contact Mr Hynes at sethhyneswriter@ australiaonline.net.au or twitter. com/sethhynes. eBook or tablet versions of the book cost $10, while the printed copy costs $20.

T2: Trainspotting a winner T2 Trainspotting (R18+) Starring: Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner and Jonny Lee Miller

12341495-PB10-17

I’m trained to spot good in movies. Setting aside the questionable necessity of its existence - insofar as most sequels aren’t really necessary - T2 Trainspotting is a truly excellent drama. After suffering a heart attack, former heroin addict Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor) returns to Edinburgh to reflect on his youth and reconnect with old friends. Delicately observed pathos

and tar-black comedy are inseparable in this movie, with a desperate middle-aged need for fulfilment replacing heroin as the driving factor in Mark’s life. The characters are full of nuance - with sweet-natured junkie Spud (Ewen Bremner) as an endearingly tragic highlight - and the witty, layered narrative generates suspense from very human, relatable motivations, including regret, greed and resentment. T2 is the best kind of sequel, as it re-visits the 1996 original without wallowing in it. There is a palpable sense of weariness from the main char-

acters, as they fall back into old criminal rhythms even as they reject the past, yet the film maintains a rapid-fire, subversive energy, and no punches are pulled in cutting the characters hilariously down to size. This film also has incredibly stylish, evocative production, with grungy yet beautiful lighting, slick editing, a pounding soundtrack and symbolic use of props. The lurid sex, vice and violence may scare some people off, but T2 Trainspotting may be the best film of the year so far. - Seth Lukas Hynes

Knights head to grand final By Ian Harley FTGDCA The Knoxfield Knights have booked a berth in the Norm Reeves Shield Grand Final for the second season in a row. Resuming at 1/15, the Knights lost the wickets of Adith Sundaresh and Matt Train with only 35 runs on the board. Skipper Tom Boxell (39no) and Trentin Scholfield (52no) then came together in an unbroken partnership to see the Knights home. Shane Colee was the only multiple wicket taker for the Kings, which will face Eildon Park at Kings Park for the remaining spot in the Grand Final. Day one started with the Kings’ openers restricted by the Knights’ tight bowling. The first wicket fell at 26 in the 16th over before the Kings accelerated to 51 in the 21st over. Trent Evans then made a double strike and had the first three wickets with the score on 51. The Kings rebuilt again before, with the score on 87, losing the wickets of Dowling (25), Dunlop (33) and Collard. Steve Bowen fought a rearguard action and was the last wicket to fall.

Two overs later, the skipper declared Upper Ferntree Gully’s innings closed in the hope of wrestling back some momentum. Trent Evans returned 5/10 off his 15 overs with 10 maidens for the Knights. In the spell before stumps, evergreen Jay Colee took the wicket of Ben Gerloff to have the Knights 1/15. Upwey batted first in the elimination final and Eildon Park’s Zac Corcoran repeated his efforts from round 11, snaring four Tiger scalps. Steve Gannell managed 33 in a slow day for the Tigers, being bowled out for 131 in 66 overs. At 1/20 overnight, the Panthers set about chasing the runs down in a steady manner progressing to 1/81 at tea before eventually sealing the win, five wickets down. George Harrison’s 62 runs ensured the victory as the Panthers look to take on Upper Ferntree Gully next week. In Decoite Shield, Footballers hosted Lysterfield at Pickett’s Reserve and will now host Johnson Park in the preliminary final. The Beavers’ bowling pressure on day two saw steady wickets and slow progress throughout the day. Nicholas Bogar (58) and Jacob Patterson did what they could for the

Griffins, sharing a 70-run partnership, but it was the bowling of Tim Chivers (3/34) and Brad Paull (3/31) which got the Beavers into a home Grand Final for the Bob DeCoite Shield. On day one, it was Anthony Brolic’s 71 that provided the backbone for the Beavers innings, before Sean Alston (31) and Adam Kinniburgh (28) put on their biggest partnership of the day for the eighth wicket. Lysterfield were dismissed for 223 in the last over of the day, with Tharanga Lakshita taking 3/56 off his 25 overs for Footballers. Ben Stallworthy set Johnson Park on the right path with 118 not out, as the Sharks set South Belgrave a chase of 285. Stallworthy combined with Liyan deSilva (81) to make sure they made the most of their opportunities, while Aaron Suckling returned 4/70 with the ball. In reply, South Belgrave made 170 as Thomas Nash (5/59) and Adam Clark (3/30) did the job for the Sharks. Matthew Sutherland (36) and Ash Hart (30) showed some signs of resistance. The Sharks will have to step it up a level next week against Ferntree Gully Footballers.
