Not too many things polarise public opinion more than politics and politicians. Take a look at what’s happening on the national stage at present. Locally, our Noosa councillors are not immune from the scrutiny that comes with public office. Mayor Tony Wellington is well known and largely well liked in the Noosa community, but he does have his detractors. Those critics were a topic of discussion when Noosa Today sat down with the mayor this week to talk about his first year in office. He accepts that as part of the job and knows he needs to grow a thicker skin. But at what cost? “If I have a fear, it is that in developing a necessary protective coating - the old tough skin - then I may lose some of my inherent compassion,” he says. So - how do you lead, and still stay grounded? To read about the mayor’s thoughts on his first year, turn to pages 4-5. ● Jolene Ogle

OFF-LEASH LAW IN OPERATION Dog owners have been dealt a blow with council now warning owners to keep their dogs on a leash at Chaplin Park or cop a $243 fine. Council said for the past three months, Local Laws Officers have been gently reminding people that Noosaville’s Chaplin Park is not a dog off-leash area now local laws co-ordinator Phil Amson says enough is enough. From Tuesday 7 March, dog owners walking their pooch off-leash can expect a formal caution followed by a $243 fine if they do it again. “We have decided on this course of action following numerous complaints about dog attacks and dogs being aggressive toward other park users, as well as reports about people being knocked over by dogs,” Mr Amson said. Mr Amson said Chaplin Park has never been an offleash area and because it is popular with community events and sporting groups, “adding off-leash dogs to this mix is not safe”. “In recent months we’ve spent a lot of time reminding Chaplin Park users of this. As of 7 March, the amnesty on dog owners using this park as an off-leash area ends and officers will start issuing formal cautions and fines,” he said. Mr Amson said despite council officers’ best efforts to educate dog owners about the rules, dog attacks and other complaints about dogs in Chaplin Park had spiked with four official reports about dog attacks at Chaplin Park since November, all of which involve dogs that were off-leash and not under effective control. For a full list of off-leash dog areas, visit council website at www.noosa.qld.gov.au/dog-ownership. ● Jolene Ogle

Noosa cleaned up its act on Sunday 5 March with hundreds of locals turning out to pick up rubbish for Clean Up Australia Day. The unofficial mayor of rubbish councillor Joe Jurisevic said the number of residents who turned out to help clear bushlands, the beach and streets of rubbish exceeded expectations. “It was great to see so many volunteers, especially after the rain the night before. We thought we would be rained out, but when the sun came out, so did the volunteers,” he said. Cr Jurisevic said once again there was far too much rubbish with bins at the sites being filled to the brim and more than 25 volunteers pulling two skip bins worth of rubbish from Yurol State Forest. “People need to acknowledge the amount of rubbish they create and take responsibility for it,” he said. The clean-up weekend started with a Unitywater sponsored beach clean-up in a bid to keep Noosa Main Beach free from plastic waste ahead of the Noosa Festival of Surfing. The clean-up was hosted by the Noosa Community Biosphere Association (NCBA), and saw volunteers collect more than 12,000 cigarette butts, 150 straws and piles of plastic rubbish from the beach. Turn to page 12 for more photos from Clean Up Australia Day throughout Noosa Shire. ●

A Noosa Today letter writer has gone to the police after he received a threatening phonecall when his letter was published. Dom Massoni has long been a letter writer to the local newspapers and said he was shocked when his wife received a threatening phonecall at 6.20am last Thursday (2 March). Mr Massoni said the “very croaky and angry voice” went on an expletive-laden rant demanding Mr Massoni stop writing to the paper before threatening to “get him” if he ignored the threat. Mr Massoni believes the caller was responding to a letter published in Noosa Today that same morning. “As you can imagine my wife was pretty upset at the time and implored me to stop writing any more letters,” Mr Massoni said. “The phone threat came from a payphone and therefore was not traceable. I’m assuming that this man must know of me, mentioning the fact I was French as my surname Massoni is from the French island of Corsica, originally belonging to Italy. “I’m also assuming that this person would have just read his freshly delivered Noosa Today, read my letter, and then walked to the closest public phonebox to make his threat.” Mr Massoni has made a complaint to the local police, has installed security cameras and said despite the threat, he would not stop writing to the paper. “I have been writing letters to the local media for a long time now, on all different issues and subjects, and there have been times when readers will strongly disagree with me, which is fair enough. We live in a democracy and everyone is entitled to have their own opinion,” he said. “I respect and cherish that as I believe freedom of speech is the last bastion of civilisation, but never, ever have I had such an appalling threat.” Mr Massoni said his last letter published in Noosa Today on 2 March didn’t make any allegations, accusations or contain rumours. Mr Massoni said it was important to him to stand up to the anonymous bully, but for the safety of his children he had said he wouldn’t write another letter about the same topic. ● Jolene Ogle

oosa Mayor Tony Wellington is an art lover; he’s passionate about music, has run folk clubs, recorded an album and even been a radio announcer for an avant-garde music program. But it’s this enduring connection with creativity and the soul that has proved to be the most at risk during his first 12 months in the top job. “If I have a fear, it is that in developing a necessary protective coating - the old tough skin - then I may lose some of my inherent compassion,” councillor Wellington said. “I hope that doesn’t turn out to be the case. My wife tells me she’ll certainly let me know if that starts to happen.” Cr Wellington’s entry into the top job came with its own share of polling-booth-related controversy and he has since had his fair share of public attention. On dealing with the slings and arrows all aimed fairly at him, Cr Wellington simply said: “You can’t please everyone.” “Those that you don’t please will sometimes believe they represent some hidden silent majority or even that they are the custodians of common sense. “But we each create our own reality and there is no absolute truth. No one holds the key to outright wisdom,” he said. Cr Wellington said being judged is to be expected for those entering a political position. “On entering the public domain, many people will formulate strong views about you as a person even though they may never have met you.

ON ENTERING THE PUBLIC DOMAIN, MANY PEOPLE WILL FORMULATE STRONG VIEWS ABOUT YOU AS A PERSON EVEN THOUGH THEY MAY NEVER HAVE MET YOU… “Those views are often impossible to shift,” he said. “That’s because of what’s called ‘confirmation bias’, whereby we tend to search out information - or misinformation - that reinforces our existing viewpoint. Social media has taken this to extremes. “There will always be people who convince themselves that, as a public official, I must automatically be corrupt or self-serving. “And there are those who will hold a life-long grudge because I beat them in an election or because I made a decision that they strongly disagree with. “I can’t do anything about that. Nor can I stop people from making bogus claims about me or writing poison pen letters. “Unfortunately, I think that the sort of treatment that politicians receive does deter people from standing for election. “If politics didn’t get so ugly, we’d likely have more choice about who to vote for. Arguably more women would stand too. But hating politicians is a sort of national pastime these days.” Cr Wellington admits dodging arrows can be tiring and makes sure he takes the time to reenergise and there’s no better - or more “Noosa” - way to stay connected to the mind, body and soul than by reconnecting with Noosa’s best asset. “I still enjoy an early morning surf. It’s my meditation, if you like,” he said. “I’ve not found anything else like surfing to take my mind off the day-to-day issues. I guess it’s what some psychologists call a ‘flow’ experience, where you are so involved in the task at hand that you lose your sense of self.” Cr Wellington also takes comfort from his family and his “home patch”, holding dear the importance of family time. “I am simply the sort of person who cares deeply about home. I’ve always been that way. For me, home is more than just the house where I live, it’s the whole area: the hinterland, river, and beach. That’s my home patch, and it’s where I feel most comfortable,” he said. “Like many residents, we chose to live in Noosa because of the lifestyle. That includes the incredible natural wonders that we are immersed in. It’s also very much about Noosa’s singular approach to development.” When it comes to being Mayor of Noosa, Cr Wellington himself admits he is an “unlikely politician” saying he drew the “short straw” when sitting on the amalgamated Sunshine Coast Council.

Mayor Tony Wellington is concerned about losing his inherent compassion.

“I was caught up in the whole anti-amalgamation and then de-amalgamation movements, but I never imagined that might result in a career in politics,” he said. “When I stood for election to the Sunshine Coast Council in 2012, it was with considerable reluctance but we knew we needed a strong advocate for an independent Noosa - someone to carry that banner into the heart of the amalgamated council. I guess I drew the short straw. “Five years later, I can now appreciate what a momentous privilege it is to serve your community. “There are not many jobs where you so readily get to see the difference you make to people’s lives.” The past 12 months have brought with it a chance for Cr Wellington to achieve a number of goals with the support of and with thanks to his fellow councillors. “I believe the current group of councillors are unanimously protective of the key features that define Noosa. As a result, it’s been a good first year for the new council,” he said. “I am truly blessed with regards to my fellow councillors. Everyone is respectful of the opinions of their colleagues and any disagreements are left behind when the discussion ends. No one takes disputes personally. “In that regard you could call it a very mature council.

Hey, can I thank the residents for their excellent choice in selecting my colleagues?” Among the highlights of his first year in the job, Cr Wellington rates instigating the council’s zero emissions initiative, achieving State grand funding for a range of projects and the positioning of Noosa within the South East Queensland Regional Plan as some of the highlights. “We have also been making good headway with the State Government on a number of fronts. We are at last progressing river issues and state road matters. We are negotiating over some exciting conservation opportunities. But the State moves at a frustratingly glacial pace much of the time,” he said. The Mayor also holds dear many achievements that will remain behind closed doors. “You know, a lot of the biggest victories remain invisible to residents because they are out-of-sight political wins rather than the more obvious capital works projects, for example. “When I have those political achievements, it would be indiscrete to crow about them publicly,” he said. “They are more to do with how Noosa is viewed and treated by higher levels of government. That eventually pays off in matters like regional planning and grant funding. “My job is to maintain the best possible relations with both State and Federal politicians. So far that is going as well as I could hope.” Looking to the future, Cr Wellington said he will focus on helping Noosa adapt to global and national demands, whether that be climate change, new economic and business needs, or advancements that will help protect the environment. “The trick is to achieve this without undermining the very elements that make Noosa both a world-class tourism destination and a great place to live,” he said. “I seriously believe that Noosa is well positioned to show the world how we can live sustainably without ruining the planet. In 10 or 20 years’ time, I would like to imagine that people will come here to marvel at how Noosa managed to be so enlightened, innovative and shrewd.” ●

NEWS FIRE CHARGES

LIFESAVING TECHNOLOGY

Police have charged a man over two fires in Coolum and Yaroomba last year. Sometime after 8pm on 20 October commercial bins at the rear of a business on Suncoast Beach Drive, Coolum, were set alight causing damage to the bins and a nearby fence. And about 12.30am on 6 November a grass fire was lit at the end of Tanah Street, Yaroomba, which burned out five square metres of scrub. Maroochydore police arrested a 31-year-old Mount Coolum man at Alexandra Headland on 25 February. He has been charged with two counts of lighting unauthorised fires and is due to appear in the Maroochydore Magistrates’ Court on 22 March. Investigations are continuing into the fire that burned 900 hectares of National Park near Peregian Springs and threatened a gas plant earlier this year. ●

BOUNDARY RIDER groups to grow and prosper,” he said. The biggest shock for Mr Elmes was the allocation of Rainbow Beach into the seat of Noosa, which will split the region from Tin Can Bay and the rest of the Gympie Regional Council area. “While I understand the commission may have imagined travel between Noosa and Rainbow Beach to be simple, travel between the two is actually very difficult, be it via the beach at low tide or the unsealed road of Cooloola Way,” he said. “The alternative U-shaped journey through Gympie would take at least an hour and a half to Noosa with light traffic.” The draft boundary changes are now open for public consultation and residents can view the proposed redistribution at http://boundaries.ecq.

EASTER TRADING Noosa retailers will be able to open their doors this Easter Sunday, 16 April, after an historic vote in State Parliament last week. This follows the start of the Industrial Relations Act 2016 which makes Easter Sunday a public holiday in Queensland. Industrial Relations Minister Grace Grace said the anomaly whereby retailers in the south-east were forced to remain closed on Easter Sunday while their regional counterparts were permitted to trade was now a thing of the past. ●

Noosa MP Glen Elmes has responded to the suggested electorate boundary changes saying he is “saddened” by the Queensland Redistribution Commission’s proposal. Mr Elmes said he has proudly represented the electorate of Noosa for more than 10 years and is disappointed to potentially lose several communities as part of this major redistribution, the first of its kind in decades. The proposed boundary changes would see Eumundi, Doonan, Verrierdale, Weyba Downs, Peregian Springs and parts of Peregian moved to a new Sunshine Coast electoral district called Ninderry. “I have looked after these wonderful neighbourhoods for a long time and have many friends and associations with residents who work very hard to look after community and environmental groups, sporting groups, service clubs, business and school

NEWS HIRING INITIATIVE A new Federal Government incentive is now available to help Sunshine Coast businesses hire additional staff. Wage subsidies are a key component of the Government’s new Jobactive Path program which will be fully rolled out in April and will help up to 120,000 vulnerable young Australians through pre-employment training and internships. Fairfax MP Ted O’Brien said the initiative would help local businesses hire young people from within the local community with financial incentives of up to $10,000 available to encourage businesses to employ new staff and create more jobs. The first stage of the Jobactive Path program is now searching for suitable employers and Mr O’Brien is urging Noosa businesses to get behind the initiative. “The program is flexible and can be adapted to meet the needs of any business, he said. “As well as significant financial incentives, the program effectively gives employers a chance to trial a prospective employee in the workplace before hiring them. For more information contact the office of Ted O’Brien or visit www.jobsearch.gov.au/path.

LOVING THY NEIGHBOUR Local food businesses could soon find themselves in an island paradise as Noosa-based social enterprise Loving Islands connects them directly with organic farmers from the Pacific islands. Loving Islands has recently launched the Protect Our Paradise campaign to raise the $30,000 development costs needed for the prototype of an innovative technology platform that will connect local business with Pacific island organic grower groups which supply processed goods such as coconut oil, tapioca flour and raw cacao. Loving Islands has been working with organic farmers in Fiji since August 2016 and communities are looking to build organic island kitchens to enable the organic farmers to work collectively in producing and selling their organic goods to generate sustainable income. The Protect Our Paradise campaign is currently raising funds through the sale of its locally designed and hand-printed organic cotton T-shirts that are available at its online store for $39.99, inclusive of free Australian shipping. NEWS FRUITY WASTE Raw fruit and vegetable scraps are likely to be included in the council’s new garden waste service that is due to be rolled out to the majority of urban homes from September. The recommendation comes as a result of a trial of adding fruit and vegetable scraps to the garden waste bin, involving 1000 homes that already receive the garden waste bin service. The trial, held from October to December 2016, showed 98 per cent of residents interviewed supported the move, 92 per cent of people said they thought it was important to get fruit and vegetable waste out of general waste, and many said they wrapped their fruit and vegetable scraps in newspaper before putting it in the garden waste bin. Noosa Council’s waste and environmental health manager Wayne Schafer said including fruit and vegetable scraps in the garden waste bin adds no cost to the council and it is sanctioned by the Department of Environment. For more information about the new garden waste bin service visit www.noosa.qld.gov.au/garden-greenwaste-services. ●

REAP NOW OZHARVEST OzHarvest Sunshine Coast has reasons to celebrate because the food rescue program has just passed a significant milestone by rescuing and redistributing more than 60,000kg of excess quality food to 18 local schools, charities and community groups. This amounts to about 180,000 meals and organisation members working at the frontline said this has made a real impact to local community members in need. In addition to this milestone, the program has had a name change due to the successful implementation of its regional model REAP.

NEW RESIDENT Meet Jimmy James, the newest resident of Sunshine Butterflies’ Our Backyard hobby farm. Jimmy will form part of the animal therapy program along with goats, sheep, cows, chickens, budgies and ducks on the five-acre Cooroibah property. Jimmy has made his way to Our Backyard with thanks to generous sponsorship from founder and managing director of the Dalwood-Wylie Charitable Foundation Helena Wylie. “Helena didn’t hesitate to make our dream of owning a miniature donkey a reality and purchased Jimmy for us,” Sunshine Butterflies founder Leanne Walsh said. “We invited her out to Our Backyard to meet him and she instantly fell in love with his affectionate nature as we all have.” Helena said she always knew

Is Mental Fatigue and Reduced Brain Function Impairing your Decision Making, Productivity and Relationships? Find the causes behind the mental fatigue epidemic sweeping Australia Difficulty concentrating or feeling fatigued as the day goes on? Do you suffer with broken sleep and waking unrefreshed? Walking into a room only to forget what you were looking for, or feeling overwhelmed by your usual work load? Difficulty finding words or recalling events recently? When these symptoms inhibit your ability to function daily we need to reconsider what is normal and understand that they can be easily reversed. Impaired cognitive function can be exhausting leaving you drained and unable to connect with family, creating relationship patterns that may be harmful.

Ochre Medical Centre Noosa is pleased to have Dr Andrew Lott and Dr Melinda Baldwin join the team as part-time General Practitioners. Dr Lott’s specialities include General Practice, Emergency Medicine and Paediatrics and he is now accepting new patients on Mondays & Fridays. Dr Baldwin specialises in Mental Health and Palliative care, and she is now taking appointments on Mondays & Wednesdays.

It’s common to blame aging, however, this may be your biggest mistake, falling further into mental and physical fatigue as time goes on, while the real problem goes unresolved.

We are also pleased to welcome back Dr Helen Chorley who has returned to our practice full-time. Dr Chorley specialises in Women/Family Health and Sports Medicine.

“The Cascade Effect can reduce your cognitive function for up to 6 months or indefinitely if left untreated”

Hours of Operation 8.30am - 5.30pm Monday to Friday 8.00am - 12.00pm Saturday Closed Sundays and Public Holidays

The cascade effect that creates these conditions are a combination of factors rather than just one cause. A highly intense stressful event or short illness may drive the body toward a myriad of effects triggering like dominoes. Once this cascade begins, it creates symptoms of adrenal fatigue, thyroid hypofunction, fluid retention, and deficiencies of necessary vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. These are required to provide optimal brain function, and energy to produce dopamine for motivation, adrenalin for energy, serotonin for mood, and many more responsible for memory and problem solving. It only takes one missing nutrient to interrupt a biochemical pathway required to complete a function in the body or brain. It can be very simple to rectify, if correctly diagnosed through thorough, yet easily available pathology testing.

Politicians, councillors, community members and even scuba divers all turned out for the Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday 5 March. The weekend of cleaning started with a beach clean on Noosa Main Beach ahead of the launch of the Noosa Festival of Surfing on Friday 3 March. The clean-up was sponsored by Unitywater. Unitywater community relations specialist Kate Cash said the clean-up was a huge success and it was great to see the community involvement from so many groups and individuals. “Their passion for protecting our waterways and beaches from waste is inspiring,” she said. “This event was a timely reminder to avoid single-use plastic water bottles and get back to tap!” The beach clean-up was the first in a series of monthly Noosa Beach clean- ups that will report data to the Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI) to create Source Reduction Plans to address the major causes of Noosa beach pollution. The official statistics from the Clean Up Australia Day are due to be collated and released next week. ●

IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT … JOHNS LANDING CLOSURE Noosa Council has confirmed long-time camping site Johns’ Landing could soon close, leaving almost 100 residents homeless. Johns Landing is a Cooroibah campsite that has been owned by the Johns family for more than 120 years and is the unofficial home to many Noosa residents who would otherwise be homeless. The council’s community services director Alan ‘Fox’ Rogers said officers were in discussions with the owners of Johns Landing who are looking to retire. “These discussions are canvassing a range of issues with regard to the long-term future of the site,” he said. Mr Rogers said the council is also working with the State Government and various community service organisations to address the needs and concerns of the residents at the camping ground. “This includes helping to find them alternative accommodation closer to town and other services,” he said. “Council’s objective in these discussions is to achieve the best possible outcome for Johns Landing residents and the owners.” Mr Rogers said any changes to the current situation are likely to be gradual and the council will discuss them with all parties. ●

NBN NOOSA An NBN branded truck was seen driving down Lake Cooroibah Road on Monday 6 March and NBN construction barriers were seen on Hastings Street last week indicating fast internet is on its way to Noosa. Small business owners have long struggled with slow or no internet connection but the frustrating days on the internet may soon be over. According to Noosa Council’s website, the NBN is on a three-year construction plan and Noosa Shire residents can expect NBN works to be completed in the first quarter of 2017. Pomona and Cooran should already be connected with Castaways Beach, Cooroibah, Doonan, Noosa Heads, Noosaville, Sunrise Beach, Sunshine Beach, Tewantin and Tinbeerwah to soon follow. ● Spotted on Hastings Street: Has the NBN finally arrived in Noosa?

BUSINESS MEETINGS A select group of local business owners have met with the Federal Minister for Small Business Michael McCormack for a round table discussion. Mr McCormack was in Noosa on Tuesday 7 March to attend a sit-down in the Noosa Boardroom’s new function room. The small discussion group included representatives from the local business community, Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman Kate Carnell and representatives from the ATO and

ACCC. There is no word yet on what was discussed at the meeting. ●

FUNDS FOR PETS The Noosa community has contributed $4752 towards the Pet Foundation’s annual Tree of Hope Appeal, which raised much needed funds for animals in need. All funds raised through the appeal will go directly to helping local animal shelters continue to do the

great work they do, including helping to provide care and treatment for sick, injured, lost and abandoned animals, rescuing animals in crisis and educating people on responsible pet ownership. The appeal, which kicked off in November, ran across Petbarn stores nationally for six weeks and encouraged Aussie to dig deep by dropping into their local Petbarn Noosa store and purchasing a $3, $5 or $10 Christmas decoration. ●

RON LANE’S PEOPLE

MICK’S GREAT LOVE OF THE SPORTING LIFE It was late morning and as we sat and chatted over a coffee, one thing became became quite obvious; here was a man who was dedicated to his job and above all was very sincere in his approach to the young athletes under his care. His name is Mick Hooper, and at 50-years-of-age this ex-military man has indeed became very successful in his job of choice - coaching the senior elite athletes of the Noosa Little Athletics. Here again is yet another local sporting achiever, who despite his success not only at local level, but also state and national - is relatively unknown. For two consecutive years in 2011 and 2012, he was voted Queensland’s Junior Coach of the Year for Little Athletics - awards well deserved. Now working as the coach of the 15 years and up high performance squad he has set his goal. “My aim is to see one or more of our seniors make the Australian Senior Team; this would be great for our club. To achieve this, it is important that we provide good training and education,” Mick said. For Mick, his love of the sporting life started immediately on leaving Bass High School in Sydney at the completion of Year 10. “I started working at a local restaurant, but after playing for Bulldogs Junior Rugby League, I decided that football was the way I wanted to go. I gave it all I had and made the NSW Under 18 team for two years, playing second row. I then played Under 23. I was in good company in the rep team with such team mates as Andrew Ettinghausen and Greg Alexander. But as you can imagine there were a lot of young blokes with the same idea, so in ’86, I headed off to England and played for a time with Halifax and then Mansfield.” During his work at the restaurant he met up with a young lady named Val and a relationship started.

“IT WAS GREAT … WE WERE ALL INVOLVED - WITH VAL GIVING IT HER TOTAL SUPPORT AS A WORKER … SHE SAW IT AS A FAMILY SPORT WITH THE EMPHASIS BEING ON FAMILY, FUN AND FITNESS…” After a time she also moved to England, and following his football commitments, they back-packed through Europe. On their return to Australia, Mick again took up with Bulldogs. It was about this time that Mick decided to catch up with his brother Alan, who was working at Mooloolaba. They liked the life and stayed for 12 months and during this time Mick took the opportunity to invest in a block of land at Coolum. This was to be the start of his love affair with the Sunshine Coast. Also while on the coast he followed on with his football career playing with the Maroochydore Swans and gaining selection with the Falcons. It was about this time Mick began to think of a career in the services. He obtained the address of a recruiting base that was run by the RAAF. He was loaded up with the necessary papers to fill out, but on returning found that the base was then run by the army. After a chat, he was happy with what they had to offer, so for Mick it was the army. “Next thing I knew I was at Wagga doing basic training in aircraft maintaince. All went well, I did advanced courses finished as dux of the class and as a result was posted to Sydney for two years; then it was on to Darwin.’’ It was while in Sydney that Mick and Val were married.

During their time in Darwin, Val and Mick also invested in a business which resulted in Mick doing two jobs, army during the day and working the family business in later hours. Also during this time this happily married couple became the proud parents of four children, three boys and a girl. Then in 2004, after serving fourteen years, Mick’s army career finished. Mick’s army service saw him do two deployments on active service in East Timor. “We were based at Suai on the border and we worked as the maintenance crews on the helicopters.” Starting his military long service, the family returned to the Sunshine Coast looking for a home base. They finally settled on a block of land in a new development known as Noosa Banks. For the family living in the Banks was a busy life. The kids joined the Noosa Nippers in the summer months and Pirates rugby league in winter. With his football background Mick also stepped into Pirates Junior League which saw him accepting a coaching role, a role which he held for nine years; this was done under the auspices of Australian Rugby League Development Program. It was during this period that he also started doing Friday afternoon coaching with Little Athletics.

RON LANE

Mick Hooper is dedicated to his coaching role.

The Friday sessions became a family affair with wife Val and the kids being involved. “It was great.” said Mick. “We were all involved - with Val giving it her total support as a worker. She saw it as a family sport with the emphasis being on family, fun and fitness.” Such has been Val’s commitment to the Noosa Little Athletics, that in 2016 she received the high honour of being elected to the Board of Directors for Queensland Little Athletics. Her dedication has seen her hold various positions, amongst these being Regional Coordinator Sunshine Coast Centre Management. Val is currently employed as a teacher’s aide at the Sunshine Beach Primary School. Having been in the club for many years and with the children also being involved, one could say it has definitely been a family affair.

“In 2009,” said Mick, “Ian Smith, an administrator with Little Athletics and chief organiser for the Annual Noosa Gift, had commenced planning for a scholarship that would enable us to formulate coaching of elite athletes.” Then in 2012 the move to establish a senior club, that would give the Little Athletics athletes a chance to continue their career without having to move away, was successfully undertaken. This was done with the full backing of Queensland Athletics. Little Athletics, senior club and elite coaching everything was happening. Regarding coaching, there were three sessions per week and those who moved into the elite level, trained with Mick - he was then the head coach with Level 4 certificate and was ably supported by Rebecca Brice and Ash Brice. “With our goal being selection in the senior team, from

15 up, the fun is over and things become serious - with good training and education we hope to hold them and head them in the right direction.” Regarding results, in the last eight years, twelve athletes have won medals at national level, they have produced seven Australian champions and five have represented Australia at junior level. “There have been two occasions that really stand out,” Mick said. “One was getting Jordan Csabi our Under 18, 200 metre Australian champion to China for the 2014 Youth Olympics; and the second was last year’s Noosa Gift. “Jordan was somewhat unique. “He didn’t take things seriously until he was 15, but with his natural talent and hard work he achieved success at state level, then at 17 years he won the Under 18 200 at the Nationals; he was on his way to China - and the Youth Olympics. “Regarding the Noosa Gift, this was won by our 15-yearold school girl, Samantha Stanley, and it was the first time in the history of the Gift that it was won by a female. But that wasn’t the only thing; she was also the youngest ever winner. Add to this, another of our elite Zane Branco finished third. “Down through the years at National level, twelve of Noosa’s elite have between them won some 60 medals. Sad to say that in our community the achievements of not only these athletes, but all involved in this club, are relatively unknown. “Yet again at this season’s recent State Titles, the senior club returned home with seven medals - four gold, two silver and one bronze - and three of their elite, were unable to attend.“ But to Mick and Val Hooper and all in the club, we say, those in the know, take pride because when all is said and done - you are all Our People. ●

TRY THIS … Wheel adventure

HOG HEAVEN ON THIS STEED OF STEEL BY HOLLIE HARRIS Many may not know that I love adventure and have a huge appreciation of beautiful bikes. While I am a scooter rider on weekends, it’s not practical for me, as a mum of two, to invest big dollars into a motorbike and get my money’s worth out of one, but now I’ve found a great option right here in Noosa. Aussie Biker Tours and Rental offers an exciting soloution to those who are looking for an adventure with an edge. If you are craving a biking experience but can’t commit to owning one, then Tim Brujes can set you up on a rental that will get your heart started or help you plan a trip to take your bike far beyond Noosa. My cheeks are still sore from the grin plastered across my face when riding the Harley Davidson FLD Switchback. Not a seasoned rider, I wasn’t sure how a longhaul sit down would fare on my tuckus, but this big bike is built for comfort. There is something exhilerating about seeing the sights I drive past every day from the open air of a bike with a 96-cubicinches 1650cc motor. I was surprised that I could smell everything and I imagine riding through rainforest or countryside would be truly something. The rumble of the Harley was more of a purr, and actually quiet enough to still hold a conversation, so probably a great couples’ adventure. Aussie Biker Tours and Rental offers self-guided or guided tours from eight days to 21 days, where you can explore

I will find it hard to go back to my scooter after this one. What a black beauty! Sightseeing and holidaying from the back or front of big bike like this is now on my bucket list.

the bustling outback towns of Longreach, Winton and Hughenden plus the tropical North Queensland resort towns of Cairns, Townsville and Airlie Beach with a day-trip further north to the Cape on bike. Adventure through the outback towns of Longreach and Winton as well as the tropical north Queensland resort towns of Cairns and Port Douglas and enjoy the fantastic roads - the list of tour itineraries is long and there is something for every biker.

Their rental prices include a GPS, panniers, top box and two helmets as required, plus insurance and unlimited kilometres on all multiple day hire periods and the selection of bikes is really impressive, as is the range of accessories. Tim prides himself on keep the fleet new and works on the theory that if they provide late model motorcycles in perfect condition, you will ride them with pride. Start or finish the ride in Cairns, Sydney,

Melbourne Perth or even Darwin - yes they offer one-way motorcycle rentals. So if you crave an adventure on two wheels or just want to see our beautiful Sunshine Coast region from a new perspective, there is nothing stopping you from trying out a few bikes from Aussie Biker Tours and Rental. Give Tim a ring on 5474 1050 or 0474 000 988 to tee up your thrill - it really is a load of fun and not just for the blokes! ●

PLEASE EXPLAIN It’s “class warfare” when tax hikes for $30,000 salary earners or complaints about CEOs’ million dollar salaries are mentioned. LENSCAPE

WON’T LOWER OURSELVES In response to Sally Hepworth’s letter (Noosa Today, 2 March), my wife and I have lived in Noosa for decades and since de-amalgamation have seen little positive change, but much idleness on the part of Noosa Council. To say more in regards to her rude comments would degrade ourselves to her level. Mark and Jan Rose, Cooroy.

PAPER GIANTS At a time when major newspapers are giving away incentives to get their readers to acquire news through digital access and I assume for the majority of readers it’s probably a good deal, Noosa Today this week came up with one of the best local rags I have seen in my time as a newspaper daily reader and supporter. Always being one who enjoys reading the early news and crosswords with breakfast, then turning the pages to find out what’s happened, about to happen and what’s available in our community is my idea of starting the day. My smartphone would give me the same, but also would use a couple or more hours of battery life. I found Wendy Wilson’s story along with Ingrid Jackson, Sandy Bolton and Aimee Sheriff ’s on women’s roles in today’s world most enjoyable. (You could have added your own in there too, Jolene.) I must add the pairing of socks in our home is never a problem and always done in a jiff. I wear the same colours unless for special occasions and even mark which is the left one. (Joking of course.) Just a quick question: where have all those 48 families moved to from the R&W auction sales? Then reading the list of open homes over 2, 3 and 4 March is an eye-opener. I suppose the occupants could lose themselves and be out of the way at the Surf Festival for those days. I hope it’s not an exodus from Noosa and the Sunshine Coast. E. Wright, Sunrise Beach.

NEED FOR RENEWABLES Colin Bond’s parody on the faults of renewable energy (2 March) might get a laugh but the Coalition’s philosophy seems not far wide of this. The concern is that if our government continues to be bought by the fossil fuel lobby, Australia, with the notable exception of SA, may well be left far behind as the world moves rapidly towards renewable energy. Some will recall how Kodak film, Remington typewriters, and Nokia phones were rapidly replaced by technology, the significance of which was not appreciated. Cars completely replaced the horse and buggy in just 13 years from1900. We currently have decision-makers that cannot see that all fossil fuel energy investments will be stranded assets within a decade. China has already passed its peak coal consumption and has become the world’s largest investor in renewables. India has adopted the world’s most ambitious goals to reduce its greenhouse gases. Electric vehicles will be cheaper to purchase and run than conventional vehicles within five years. They will soon all be powered by solar electricity. If our elected representatives at both the state and federal level really want to create jobs, reinvigorate manufacturing, establish energy security, lower energy costs and stimulate enterprise, embracing the coming use of renewable energies, and ditching coal, is the most obvious way to do it. If we don’t we will definitely be the last cab, I mean Uber, off the rank. Steve Hall, Cooroy.

GREEN PROPAGANDA Joy Ringrose’s promotion note for Joe Shlegeris’s Greens Noosa election (Noosa Today, 23 February) typifies the Greens propaganda which continually distorts facts to mislead innocent readers. They use dodgy values from fellow travellers to just ‘make stuff up’ to suit their story; if this Green in-

sanity was applied, it would be economic suicide in slow motion for Australia. The now commercially mature renewable (wind and solar) energy industry remains cost uncompetitive; requiring unjustifiable subsidies to be viable, cannot provide ‘baseload’ power, lacks operating reliability and as a substantial proportion of the network capacity introduces potential distribution grid instability and ‘blackouts’. Wind and solar are now failed electricity supply experiments - with unacceptable cost penalties for zero environmental benefit - even ‘levelised’ Productivity Commission data shows the production cost for ‘wind’ being over double that for ‘coal’ with MCA aggregate subsidies for ‘wind’ being almost 20 times greater than for ‘coal’ electrical generation. Accepted European statistics show that for every renewable energy job created, three other jobs are lost; contributing to increased unemployment. Therefore, beware of the Greens - take the trouble to read their manifesto and be shocked. John Smeed, Noosaville.

GIVEN THE BOOT Currently in England, elderly who have only a $10,000 mortgage yet can’t pay it, are being kicked out of their homes and their homes being rented by the banks to imported workers who work for $4 an hour. This is a fact. In the USA, if the elderly won’t take up the real estate’s offer to sell, they send in the clowns. Grafitti artists, drug addicts, and bad renters run amok through the region scaring the daylights out of the elderly who then have no choice but to leave. The suburb becomes derelict, property valuations understated and the developers walk in compensated. Australia, with Turnbull who paid millions to secure his position, is no different. Many years ago I was contested for writing against voting. Everything I stated in that one letter is now happening. You don’t have to be a genius to see what is occurring in our

nation, let alone the world. Someone said to me the other day - ‘It’s changing, the good people are being heard’. Sadly, many have lost small businesses, longterm residencies and their health all due to a corrupted system. Who will be held accountable? Not the corrupted, not the pollies nor the professionals who back them. The professionals have learnt how to corrupt the system, they think the worker should pay for their extravagance. Bad luck. Jen Oakley, Noosaville. ● MORE LETTERS PAGE 43

BEHIND THE GAVEL

GORDON MACDONALD

BIG WEEK FOR AUCTION RESULTS JUST like this latest heatwave, the local auction market is red hot and there are no signs of it slowing down anytime soon. In fact, this is one of the heathier weeks in terms of overall activity we have seen on the Sunshine Coast and Noosa. Throughout the week, we have seen an increase across all areas of auctions including an influx in registered bidders leading to an increase of under the hammer results, other factors including crowd sizes were larger and sold-prior rates were all up when compared with the same month last year. Southern purchasers migrating to the Sunshine Coast always gravitate towards our auctions because it’s the method of sale they are accustomed to and find this method of purchasing both familiar and reassuring. On auction day, a crowd gathers.

The auctioneer builds momentum as the bidding starts and negotiates with the parties. Bidders battle it out to see who is prepared to pay the most and if the top price exceeds the vendor’s reserve, the hammer falls and the sale is made unconditionally. Even where a sale doesn’t happen on the day, expectations on both sides are publicly clarified and a sale will normally be finalised in the following days or weeks. Auction is good for everyone, particularly in today’s market - it brings sellers together with every possible interested buyer in a transparent way, where everyone can see what everyone else is prepared to pay or accept. Everyone gets to make a personal decision with all the information. I can’t think of a fairer way in the modern world to conduct a property sale. ●

REWARDS FOR GOOD EFFORT THE Century 21 Conolly Hay Group team have returned winners from the Century 21 annual awards, held in Brisbane on Saturday 25 February. The C21 Conolly Hay Group won fourth top office across Australasia for 2016, which C21 Conolly Hay Group has labelled a huge achievement considering there are over 350 offices in the C21 network. Principals David Conolly and Mike Hay both walked away as Centurion Producers again in 2016, putting them in the top two per cent of salespeople throughout Australasia. They both also walked away with the Diamond Award for achieving $180,000 and above settled commission for the quarter. Permanent property manager Maaike Hillegers-Peters won the award for Property Manager of the Quarter in the under 250 managements category, while a number of sales agents walked away with Masters Entry and Ruby awards. Rachel Sellman joined the ranks of Centurion Producer, while Leon Butt took the Platinum Award ($100,000 settled commission or 40 units) and a Masters Entry. ●

HOUSING AFFORDABILITY

PRICES ARE STILL OUR BARBECUE-STOPPER HOUSING affordability is the latest hot topic among the real estate industry, with leading data and analytics company CoreLogic creating a report specifically focusing on the issue. On releasing the report, CoreLogic director of research Tim Lawless said housing affordability was shaping up as one of the most talked about topics for 2017. “Conversations around this topic are taking place daily - from political debates, to media reports and interviews, industry narratives, social media conversations and more,” he said. “Generally, there’s real concern within Australia’s social and economic circles on how best to deal with the housing affordability phenomenon and who from government may assume the role of Housing Minister to lead and tackle this issue. “As Australia’s largest data and analytics company, CoreLogic assigned its frontline research analysts and expert commentators to delve deep and report on the current status of Australia’s housing.” Mr Lawless’s comments come as CoreLogic’s Cameron Kusher reveals there are now more Sydney suburbs with a median house value of $2 million than under $600,000, creating a tough housing market with low stock. “If you are earning a relatively low income in Sydney and are looking to buy a house or unit, you are competing for a

Housing affordablity is a hot topic this year - and it’s all bad news for Sydneysiders. Picture: CoreLogic RP Data rapidly declining pool of housing stock across the city,” he said. Mr Kusher warned the pool was also declining across the remaining capitals, but not at the same pace of decline as in Sydney. “At the end of 2016, looking at both houses and units, 20.5 per cent of Sydney suburbs had a median value of less than $600,000 compared to 38.5 per cent of suburbs having a median value of at least $1 million,” he said. “To further highlight deteriorating housing affordability in Sydney, 34.6 per cent of suburbs had a median unit value of less than $600,000 at the end of

2016. In each other capital city, a higher proportion of suburbs had a median house value of less than $600,000 than the proportion of suburbs with a median unit value of less than $600,000.” Mr Kusher said a retrospective look at median dwelling values across the suburbs of Australia showed the bracket creep that had occurred over the current growth cycle, highlighting the deterioration of more affordable capital city housing over the past five years. “At the end of 2016, 7.6 per cent of suburbs nationally had a median house value under $200,000 and 5.9 per cent

of suburbs had a median unit value below $200,000,” he said. “To put these figures into some perspective, 11.4 per cent of suburbs had a median house value of at least $1 million and three per cent of suburbs had a median unit value of at least $1 million.” Mr Kusher said there had been a substantial decline in the proportion of suburbs with a median value below $400,000 over the five years to the end of 2016. According to data, at the end of 2011, 53.5 per cent of suburbs had a median house value of less than $400,000 and 69.8 per cent of suburbs had a median unit value of less than $400,000. By the end of 2016, the proportion of suburbs with a median value of less than $400,000 had fallen to 41 per cent for houses and 55.3 per cent for units. “A five-year retrospective look at the individual capital cities highlights the significant shift in the proportion of suburbs with a median value under $400,000, particularly in Sydney and Melbourne,” Mr Kusher said. According to CoreLogic’s data, the Noosa Shire has a median house price of $550,000 when considering housing activity over the past 12 months. The Sunshine Coast Shire returned a slightly lower median house price of $490,000 throughout the same period. The housing affordability report can be found at www.corelogic.com.au.

OF WORK BY HOLLIE HARRIS The Australian Body Art Festival has been embraced by its new Noosa Hinterland home in Cooroy, with event organisers overwhelmed by the generosity of people keen to see this unique event get back on its feet. Cooroy Chamber of Commerce President, Danielle Taylor said the support had been jaw-dropping. “It was a bit of a risk for the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce to take on this event to keep it alive because we were basically starting from scratch and there was a huge amount of work to do. But the support for the festival has been overwhelming, proving it was the right decision to make. It’s quite possible this will be the best event ever,” Danielle said. Support has come in from individuals who have donated money, as well as a host of support from local businesses and community groups. “We’ve got community groups like Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre, Cooroora Woodworkers, Pomona Pixies, AFABA Inc and Rotary Club of Cooroy all helping out with the festival. “Hinternoosa Real Estate are sponsoring volunteer shirts and we’ve also had cash sponsorships come in from Tourism Noosa, Gelignite Jacks, CCTV Specialists and The Blacksmiths. “The in-kind sponsorships are overwhelming also with support from Equip4Hire, Cooroy App, Firefly Solutions, Hire a Loo, Noosa Today, Mix FM, QMP and Bunnings Noosaville and prizes from Bold as Love Jewellery, Always Wicked Art, Derivan, 1300Facepaint, Studio Republic and Funtopia,” she said. “The crowdfunding campaign set up for the event has already reached 80 per cent but if anyone has a few dollars to spare, this is a pretty good event to donate to. We are holding the event regardless of whether we reach the funding target but every extra dollar we raise will make the festival an even more spectacular experience for everyone. “We’ve got artists coming from as far away as Tasmania and South Korea. It is such a good response that registrations are closing at the end of February because we have nearly run out of space to fit them all,” Danielle said. One thing is for sure, put 8 and 9 April into your diary and plan to be in Cooroy because this is one event that should be a mustsee on your calendar. More information about the festival and the crowdfunding campaign can be found online at www.australianbodyart.com.au. ●

The Refugees by Viet Thanh Nguyen The multi-talented Nguyen knows what it means to inhabit a life radically shaped by history. In 1975 he and his family went to The United States as refugees in the wake of the Vietnam War. His debut novel, The Sympathizer, winner of last year’s Pulitzer Prize, revisited the conflict that changed the trajectory of his life and inserted a much-needed Vietnamese perspective to the largely American-driven narrative. In The Refugees, a collection of stories 20 years in the making, he gives voice to the Vietnamese communities in southern California where he grew up and to those living in the country he fled, acknowledging that the ghosts of war live on for generations. ●

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds Skeleton Tree Skeleton Tree is meant to be a record for everyone, a naked, honest depiction of true grief in musical form. As Nick Cave’s latest triumph, this stands as possibly his greatest achievement, as much a sorrowful exploration as a loving send-off not only for his fans but, more importantly, for himself. Cave and the Bad Seeds have been responsible for a lot of great albums, but nothing they’ve ever released matches Skeleton Tree. Nick Cave is stripped to the bone and robbed of a future. This album sounds like grief in its purest musical form. Behind the heartbreak is some of the best song writing of this year. Skeleton Tree is a record for those who are unable to fully express their grief. ●

NOOSA TODAY 31

THE FEED

ELITE CELEBRATION OF PRODUCE BY HOLLIE HARRIS Josh Smallwood, head chef of Rickys, joins Zeb Gilbert, coowner and executive chef of Wasabi, in a celebration of the produce grown at their restaurant farms. This incredible 15 guests only event will be held at Wasabi’s new private dining room Ibento, on 24 March. Maravista Farm is a culinary garden of organic, locally grown produce for the Ogilvie Group venues which include Rickys, Locale Noosa, Wood Fire Grill and aromas noosa. A stunning 250 hectare working macadamia farm in the Noosa Hinterland, the property boasts beautiful fertile land, rolling hills, more than 20,000 macadamia trees, vegetable, citrus, micro herb and honey production. Three vegetable plots are currently in production as well as macadamia and a substantial citrus grove with over 60 fruiting trees. Maravista Farm’s newest residents are a small herd of Ultra Black cattle that enjoy life on the farm. Honeysuckle Hill was established in 2012 to grow Japanese ingredients for Wasabi Restaurant and Bar. In Japan, many restaurants specialised in specific local cuisines that have evolved over generations based only on the ingredients that can be found in their local area. Wasabi tries to stay true to that concept, and while maintaining an entirely Japanese aesthetic, use as many locally grown elements as possible. In 2015, they extended the number of garden beds to incorporate herbs and vegetables for use in The Cooking School Noosa and Ibento, their new private dining room. At Honeysuckle Hill, they gravity irrigate with water from their natural spring and compost the vegetable peelings and off cuts from the restaurant using the Japanese Bokashi method, which retains all the nutrients, organic materials and microbes.

An exclusive and intimate dinner highlighting the produce of our region will be held at Wasabi later this month.

The two chefs and two farms are coming together for one night only. The intimate dinner is held at Wasabi’s new private dining room Ibento, on 24 March and commences at 6.30pm.

Tickets are $180 per guest, and can be purchased by calling Wasabi on 07 5449 2443. With only 15 seats on offer, should you want to attend this exclusive event, call soon to avoid disappointment. ●

What if your declining and poor memory is not an ageing problem? Forgetting a name or word is common, though when you’re forgetting recent conversations and not recognising faces easily, it’s time to deal with it, as it really can be quickly resolved. When your fading memory begins to affect your work, it’s often coupled with distraction, poor focus and feeling disorganised. Not only does this put your work at risk, stress then impacts the problem further, being the main contributor to memory loss, not necessarily ageing. Starving the brain of sleep, missing key nutrients from the diet such as calcium, magnesium, B complex and proteins, hormonal imbalances, and brain inflammation are all causes of memory loss that will occur at any age when you’re not living a balanced healthy life. Short term, we accept it as part of life, though it shouldn’t be. Long term depression, Alzheimer’s or dementia are risks we take if we ignore it. Start by increasing sleep, reduce stress with exercise or downtime, resolve conflicts and spend time with friends, eat healthy, treat your body like you love it, and ask for help if it’s beyond your ability. Choose to live the life you deserve. ●

NOOSA PAVING

The original Alligator Water Tank Cleaning has existed on the Sunshine Coast for over 23 years and with current owners Keith & Jenny Dobson for the past 14 years, assuring that tanks are left in a perfectly clean & spotless condition. There are some periods of the year when a lot of tank owners notice their water turns rank – this is often due to the fine blossom of certain trees slipping through the tank strainer & consequently breaking down & going rank in the water. So even if it is raining, it’s still a good time to clean your tank because you can discard the tainted water & wait for the next rainfall or opt to buy a small load of town water. If your water is fine, but it’s still time to clean the tank (Council recommends every 2 years), Alligator has the capacity to store up to 3,000 galls (14,000 litres) whilst cleaning, then filter it before refilling into your tank. Keith is able to clean all sizes of rainwater storage tanks and also specialises in apartment sump cleaning & high rise fire tanks. Keith is one of the few operators on the coast who has full accreditation for Combined Space Entry as does his employee Ryan, which makes Alligator unique – they actually get inside your tank to scrub down the roof, walls & floor & pump the dirty water out which leaves the tank pristine clean. A true, gold standard in tank cleaning. Keith can also offer advice on ordering & installation of water pumps, filtration systems, new tanks and repairs to metal, concrete & poly tanks. Feel free to contact Keith either by email:alligatorjenny@westnet.com.au or mobile: 0411 864 223 or see our Facebook page.

ANGLERS HAVE A FIELD DAY With the good conditions last weekend, reef anglers did extremely well with most anglers reporting success from either the bottom or pelagics on the surface. Good numbers of trout are still coming from Sunshine Reef. Well-presented pilchards or live baits right on the bottom has been the best approach, and good-sized sweetlip have been feeding on most reef systems. Pearl perch and cod have also been common captures from North Reef, Chardons and around the Double Island Point area. Boats that made the trip to the Barwon Banks were well rewarded with a good mix of reef fish including pearl perch, cod, jew and cobia all landed, while good numbers of Spanish mackeral have been hanging around North Reef, Chardons Reef and Sunshine Reef. Live baits, gar, and pilchards have been good bait options, however trolling baits and deep diving lures have also been nailing some big fish. Yellowfin, long tail and mac tuna schools were again in the bay earlier last week, with

Professional Services Guide

small stick baits and slugs accounting for some great fish. On the beaches, things were a bit busy over the weekend, plenty of anglers made their way up Noosa’s North Shore for a beach session, and with the new moon last week, anglers were delighted with some quality fish coming from the very early morning tides. Whiting are in great numbers with the close gutters providing some good fish, worms, pippies and peeled prawns have been the go-to baits and dart are also in good numbers with the larger fish coming from the top of the tide. A couple of smaller jew were reported from the southern beaches around Coolum, with some larger bream and the odd tailor were also in the mix. Muller fillets, salted bonito fillets and pilchards were the baits of choice. With a bit of rain last week the river has started to colour up which is great, as it creates a lot more bait activity in the river. Lots of trevally have made there their way into the river on the tides with the

evening the better fishing, surface poppers just on dusk has seen plenty of big eye trevally taken. Prawn profile soft plastics have been accounting for good numbers of giant and big eye trevally, tailor are also being hooked on plastics, while mangrove jack are still on the chew right throughout the system. The flathead population seems to be improving every year with more and larger females being caught and released. The stretch between Tewantin and the first lake and Weyba Creek seems to be hot spots. Whiting have still been in good numbers right throughout the lower part of the system, the Dog Beach, Gympie Terrace and the Frying Pan have all fished well on the incoming tide, with live worms, yabbies and peeled prawns have been the baits of choice. Bream are also about in Woods Bay on prawns, pillies and strips of bonito and small soft plastics in prawn and crab profiles have worked well. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! ●

OPINION NOTE OF CONCERN As a Noosa Shire ratepayer and descendant of Noosa’s earliest of pioneering families, I am like many others now voicing their concerns regarding the CCC referred Queensland Police Service investigation. The excellent letter from your writers Ken Coleman and Dom Massoni (Noosa Today, 2 March) has helped settle this restless soul by being branded as being part of a smear campaign against our Noosa Mayor for simply demanding honesty, accountability and transparency of our elected mayor and councillors. Those excellent letters show others share my concerns as well. What really surprises me is no public statement from Mayor Wellington to deny such allegations. Let me put it this way - should allegations of such seriousness be levelled at honest me and I knew there was no substance to those allegations, I would be in the media, on local radio all-out defending my reputation. Sadly, we are yet to hear or see anything from Mayor Wellington. May I point out as a ratepayer, where our local press releases this relevant information it cannot be said that a smear campaign exists because I and others demand honesty, transparency and accountability of those trusted to administer our rate dollar. Trevor Clarey, Boreen Point.

HARDLY WORKING Council’s Service and Organisation Meeting held on 7 February provided an update on Capital Works. Contrary to their expectations there’s been no improvement - at the end of January they had only completed 27.82 per cent of actual work (should be twice that figure - 50 per cent plus). The full report showing deficiencies is listed online - basic infrastructure like roads, bridges, drainage, boardwalks and pathways is not being maintained or improved. As stated, I believe these failures are symptomatic of an operational failure. John Lobb, Peregian Springs.

CULT OF PERSONALITY It draws a long bow to call One Nation a cult, however, a look at this party’s policies reveals serious oversights. The two biggest government budget items are health and education. There are no overall policies in these important areas. Likewise defence, which does not rate a mention. Perhaps they are in the ‘too hard’ basket for a party that has gained popularity through social division and fear campaigns. The One Nation policy on climate change is one of complete denial, with a slap at the CSIRO, and a desire to defund renewable energy. The environment is also neglected. What is emphasised is ending the disadvantage that various trade deals have placed Australia in, and disapproval of the offshoring of jobs. And it is high time that these issues, causing the decline of much Australian manufacturing, were brought to the forefront. Donald Trump was elected on a very similar raft of policy platforms. However, as we have seen in his presidency, lack of a deep understanding of the complexity of government is causing his presidency to become an international joke. Queensland needs intelligent, capable people at its helm, not a grab bag of popular causes with no understanding of the really big issues. We have already seen, in Campbell Newman, what damage a shallow ideologue can do to our state. Let us not repeat that mistake. Joy Ringrose, Pomona. noosatoday.com.au

AROUND THE GROUNDS

SQUAD MAKES AN IMPACT BY RON LANE At the end of the trials one of the officials was overheard saying to Impact Boxing Academy coach Mark Evans, “Why don’t you just charter your own plane?“ All within hearing laughed. The reason behind this remark was that Evans had arrived at Acacia Ridge in Brisbane for the Queensland Selection Trials Boxing tournament, with a team of eleven boxers; and at the end of the tournament all had been selected for the trip to Adelaide to contest the Australian Titles in April. A win at the Australian Titles will guarantee them selection in one of two major international up-coming amateur boxing tournaments. One will be the Youth Commonwealth Games to be held in the Bahamas in July; the other the Elite World Championships to be contested in Hamburg, Germany later in the year. The selection of all eleven gives Cooroy’s Impact Club the most representation in the team. Some were also named as winners of Major Standout Trophies in their divisions: there can be no doubt that this club is now the most successful of its type in Queensland. Those chosen to represent Queensland in their various divisions are: Coen Allman and Riley Whitestyles - School Boys, Cameron Little and Chloe Halley - Juniors, and Ben Cameron-Hands, Abbie Slavin, Ella

Riley Whitestyles and Abbie Slavin were both awarded stand out boxers of the tournament. Picture: MARK EVANS Boot and Sam Cameron-Hands - Youth. Tyler Blizzard, Luke Martin and Bryce Hegartey were named in the Elite Men’s. The draws at the tournament did not favour Impact in any way, with noone receiving byes. “As a result all team members had to fight their way through to the finals. However all said they were happy to do so because then there would be no doubt as to

who were the best,” Evans said. At the end of March a coaching seminar will be held at the AIS in Canberra for 20/20 Vision Combat Coaches. Added to this, Evans has been invited as the Queensland High Performance Coaching Representative to attend a conference, the purpose of which is to plan a strategic pathway for athletics towards the Tokyo Olympics. ●

BETWEEN THE FLAGS

RON LANE

HUNDREDS PAID THEIR RESPECT It was respect; there is no other word for it. At 3pm on Saturday 900 plus people gathered at the St Thomas More Catholic School to bid farewell to David (Dave) John Glassock who left us after a long illness. People from all levels of our community, education, water polo, rugby and lifesaving were in attendance - the young and the old. Definitely a man for all ages and all seasons, and proud to say - One of Our People. Another weekend in paradise, Noosa at its best. To say the beaches were busy is an under-statement. Lifesavers on patrol and the Festival of Surfing heading into yet another successful week. Sunshine Beach Surf Club was busy performing several rescues using both rescue boards and tubes. Happy to relate all ended well. “It certainly was a weekend with a difference,” club captain Scott Summers said. “We had rescue work Saturday and Sunday but Sunday was Melbourne weather with almost four seasons in one day. “But one area of concern for us Alexandria Bay had plenty of visitors but happy to say there was no trouble.” For Noosa the weekend started on Friday with the by-annual Sponsors’ Breakfast. With 62 people, sponsors and club representatives in attendance, club President Ross Fisher thanked sponsors for their ongoing support.

Maggie Glassock and Ben Grandison who placed first in U17 First Aid and second in U19 First Aid.

The highlight of the morning was a demonstration of the latest resuscitation training techniques during which a sponsor was, much to the delight of other guests, invited to take part. His rating at the completion of the exercise will, and always will, remain hidden in the depths of club archives. The championship season is now well underway and both Sunshine and Noosa had a great start. At the recent Queensland Surf Rescue Championships held at Dickey Beach, the Noosa Team came home with five medals -

SURF’S UP

two gold, two silver and one bronze. Interesting to note that the gold and silver medals were all won in First Aid section Competition and the bronze in Champion Lifesaver. Sunshine’s success was along similar lines with four medals being won in Champion Lifesaver section and two being for Patrol Competition. These results are something to be proud of because all the medals won were for competition in events that are, basically, what lifesaving is all about - individual lifesaving, patrolling and first aid. Unfortunately, not being glamour events

little is heard of these teams and their efforts often go unrecognized. With both clubs continually achieving good results it is only right we should pause for a moment and go behind the scenes and take a look at the unsung heroes of this success. At Sunshine there can be no doubt that a major influence is the long serving Jo Redwood; now ably assisted by her son and former top competitor, Brock Redwood. For Jo it has been some eight years since she took the big step into coaching. “Our coach at the time was Glyn Jones and he had decided to retire, so I said I would step in to help and that was the start. “Down through the years I have had a lot of help and some has come from retired competitors who stayed on to assist. “Now my son Brock has started a coaching career and last year he was named the Queensland Life Saving Rookie Coach of the Year.” At Noosa there are also several people involved with coaching but one in particular has become something of a legend. It’s another lady and her name is Lenore Grice and she has the distinction of being not only a Life Member of Noosa but also a member of the Australian Surf Life Savings Hall of Fame, a result of her outstanding success as a medal winning coach in the areas of First Aid Competition. Well done to both ladies - a credit to their clubs. ●

HOLLLIE HARRIS

GOOD NEWS FOR SURF FEST FINALS There has been great surf over the last week across the coast and some world-class waves rolling through Noosa points just in time for the start of the festival. A little messy over the last couple of days, especially on the opens due to a cross-shore breeze and slow swells as the South-facing beaches in northern NSW copped all the size. The southerly swell direction has limited wave height but it is due to swing around anti-clockwise which should bring more size over the next couple of days. South swell magnets will be biggest but wind affected. Large swell is predicted for south of the border over the next couple of days with some pretty intense conditions predicted and a lot of water moving around, so take an extra leggie if you’re planning a roadtrip and get ready to paddle! With the Quicksilver and Roxy Pro kicking off early next week down at the Gold Coast, it will be interesting to see if the banks can hold up from getting washed away. There should be some nice waves across Noosa easing from 4ft to 2ft-3ft Saturday, then down to 1ft or 2ft Sunday, so good news for the finals of the surf fest and those able to get to Noosa for a paddle. Overall, it has been a super fun week of waves up here but the pick of the weekend will be to head south as far as possible. ● 44 NOOSA TODAY

SPORT TODAY The surfing dogs last Sunday continued to be a huge crowd pleaser. Picture: SURFSHOTS

EVEN THE DOGS HAD A BALL BY HOLLIE HARRIS Noosa turned on the charm, clear blue skies, crystal blue ocean and perfect and clean waves for the commencement of the Laguna Realty Noosa Festival of Surfing this week. The dogs took to the waves on Sunday, performing for a massive crowd and delighting all the kids with their skill and cute factor. Kicking off the events early in the week, the World Surfaris Men’s 65 and Over were the first to enjoy the perfect conditions proving age is as nothing to these youngat-heart surfers, their continual passion keeping them sprightly beneath the greying hair. Bruce Channon, always so dominant in competition, didn’t submit his reputation and the defending champion surfed a stunning heat for a convincing win. So too for Earle Page in heat two, with Phil Jarratt in fine form to take a second. WA’s Norm Bateman, last year’s bronze medallist, also progressed to round three, with the reperchage round two scheduled for later in the day. The Old Guys Rule Men’s 60 and Over

was a similar return of familiar names, Ballina’s Eric Walker decimating his heat despite being 67 years young. Albie Curtis was also again a very strong contender, taking victory in his heat, and perennial Japanese festival attendee, Hiroaki Nakano was simply outstanding in round four. While the waves were still superb, they became interspersed with long lulls, requiring much patience from the surfers in the Bear Surf Men’s 55 and Over, but Rod Dale, Paul Guthrie and Charlie O’Sullivan did well to wait it out and score the winning waves in their heats. Fourth finalist Gilles Fesselet played his heat to perfection, an early high score not matched until the dying minutes of the heat, taking Gilles from fourth to first in one swift, winning move. It was a very similar story for all heats of the Women’s Pro division, an early set offering scoring opportunities no repeated until the last few minutes of each heat. Sierra Lerback surfed with almost faultless style and finesse for an undisputed heat one victory, while Sunshine Coaster

(and unusually, one of the division’s few Australians) waited for three quarters of the heat in sixth place without a single wave ridden. The wait was worth it, and she sailed straight past her rivals for the win, just ahead of talented young Hawaiian, Kelis Keleopa’a. Kirra Seale was unstoppable in heat three, fellow Hawaiian, Lola Schremmer doing well to keep up for a second, and in the final heat of round one, US Under 18 champion, Soleil Errico just tipped an onform Rosie Jaffurs for a first place. The Logger Pro, though a little wavestarved, was a showcase of some of the finest traditional-style longboarding on the planet, a ten-heat extravaganza of classic logging. The ten heats offered far too many exceptional moments to reflect upon here, but among them, Dane Wilson surfed confidently for a heat one win, as did 2015 Logger champion, Samuel Crookshanks. Kai Annetts, one of the younger competitors, showed much promise with a second place, while Alex Bullpitt reflected fellow Sunshine Coaster Kathryn Hughes’ performance, appearing to have let the heat

pass him by, until two excellent late waves awarded him a second. Justin Healey caught the first wave of his heat, ridden almost perfectly for a 9.5 score, backing it up as the final horn sounded for a huge win. The final heat of the Logger Pro’s first round saw Kaimana Takayama simply dominate, everyone surfing incredibly well, but Takayama in a league of his own. Again, few waves ridden, but those that were were made to count. The reperchage round two filled out the spots for Wednesday’s third round, with the Women’s Pro wrapping up the day’s excitement in the water. A strong Hawaiian field saw defending champion, Honolua Blomfield in absolutely sensational form, Lola Schremmer claiming second to progress to the semis, while Sierra Lerback was again surfing brilliantly, followed by Lola’s younger sister, Mason. Light fading too fast, heat four would have to wait until tomorrow, with the final two semis spots being decided first thing in the morning. A rare treat was offered to evening guests at the XXXX Summer Beach Bar, with the legendary Peter ‘PT’ Townend ‘On the Couch’ in conversation with the equally legendary Bob Cooper. Bob, numerous years PT’s senior, the discussion explored Cooper’s first steps on a board, the evolution of his skills both as a surfer and shaper growing up in America and his emigration to Noosa shores in the ’60s, when surfing was shared by barely five surfers on our now famed and populated point waves. Harrison Roach and filmmaker Andy Gough presented their stunning new collaboration, a short film titled Black Rain, Harrison’s incredible talent in the surf reflected by Gough’s equal talent behind the lens. The ‘Life is Better When You Surf ’ Short Film Festival, an entertaining collection of sub-ten-minute creations took Day Three to a sedate close. An incredible few days of stoke and surfing action that will continue through to the finals on Saturday. ● noosatoday.com.au

QUEEN’S BATON RELAY HITS NOOSA Noosa will again welcome the Queen’s Baton Relay, and the news is bringing back memories for baton bearer Clinton Stanley who carried the baton through Noosa in 2006 for the Melbourne Commonwealth Games. With the baton again heading for Noosa, this time bound for the Gold Coast in 2018, the champion swimmer is urging others to carry on the tradition. Across Australia some 3800 baton bearers are needed to share the dream of the ‘friendly Games’ as part of the Queen’s Baton Relay, which comes to Noosa on Monday 26 March 2018. The baton will reach its final destination, the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) Opening Ceremony, on 4 April 2018. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has launched the call-out for baton bearers, and said she did not want politicians basking in the reflected glory of carrying the Queens Baton across Queensland in the lead-up to the Commonwealth Games. “I don’t want politicians signing up for the baton relay as just another chance to grandstand,” Ms Palaszczuk said. “I won’t be applying to run, and politicians at every level should follow my lead. These are the people’s games, ‘the friendly games’. We want our young people, our community legends, from all walks of life tasked as baton-bearers.” Queen’s Baton Relay Local Working Group chairman councillor Joe Jurisevic said Noosa was filled with inspirational and amazing people. “The Queen’s Baton Relay is a fantastic opportunity to involve those local champions, just like Clinton, who make Noosa what it is today,” he said. A community nomination program, which is now open, offers the people of Noosa and the surrounding region an opportunity to carry the baton. Baton bearers are people of all abilities who inspire others to be great. They will represent their communities with pride and showcase their hometowns to the world. “Clinton Stanley is a great example of

someone making a dream a reality, despite the challenges that life may present,” Cr Jurisevic said. “We’re excited to have the baton coming through Noosa, and I encourage our Noosa community embrace this opportunity.” Setting off in Australia on 25 December 2017, the baton will travel for 100 days to connect with as many people as possible in every state and territory. The Queen’s Baton carries a message from Her Majesty The Queen through the entire Commonwealth. The Games are declared officially open when the message is

read aloud. The baton will start its global journey at Buckingham Palace on Commonwealth Day, Monday 13 March, before it will travel through every Commonwealth nation and territory on its way to Australia. From today until 15 May 2017, anyone can nominate a person who inspires them to be great. GC2018 are looking for people who: · Have achieved something extraordinary or inspired others to achieve something extraordinary; · Have made a significant contribution to

either sport, education, the arts, culture, charity or within their community; or · Have excelled, or aspire to excel athletically or personally; or · Contribute to a fun, friendly, vibrant and inclusive community; · Are at least 10 years old as at 25 December 2017; and · Are an Australian citizen or lawfully entitled to reside in Australia during the Relay period (25 December 2017 - 4 April 2018). Nominations can be made by visiting https://www.gc2018.com/qbr ●

CROSSING CODES AND COMFORT ZONES BY DOUG TOMS Last weekend both the U13 Eumundi Dragons Junior Rugby Union and the Under 13 Noosa Pirates Junior Rugby League Clubs crossed the code divide to play an exciting game of mixed rugby all in the name of charity. On Sunday 4 March, the boys played 20 minutes of rugby league followed by 20 minutes of rugby union where players from both teams really stepped outside their comfort zones to play the other code. The curtain-raiser event on the day was a game of RayTag for the younger players from the Dragons followed by their providing a tunnel of honour for the older boys as they took to the field. Even though the league boys were victorious on the day, the real winner was the Jake Garrett Foundation with $925 raised by both teams. The funds will go towards supporting families who have lost a child due to a wide range of causes including illness and accidents. Jake Garrett Foundation founder Helen noosatoday.com.au

The Under 13 players crossed the code divide to raise funds for the Jake Garrett Foundation. Garrett said since October 2016 they have given much-needed support to over 220 families Queensland-wide and 520 families. Lots of local community members came

out in support of the day including the Dragons’ major sponsors, Geoff Edwards from the Cooroy Branch of the Bendigo Bank. ●
