MACKILLOP MacKillop endeavours to provide outstanding education that integrates faith, life and culture

O

n Wednesday 8 February, MacKillop College Werribee opened the school year with a Mass celebrated by Most Reverend Archbishop Dennis Hart DD and concelebrated with Canonical Administrators Rev Fr Frank Buhagiar PP and Rev Fr Pius Kodakkathanath PP, Rev Fr Shymon Thekkekalathunga and Rev Fr Darien Sticklen. The Opening Mass at MacKillop College was a sacred opportunity for us to gather as a community to celebrate the Eucharist. At this time, we entrusted our year to God’s providence and care, and prayed for the deepening of our relationship with Christ in all that we do. The Opening Mass is inspirational in its focus, marking the spiritual beginning of the college year. Our theme for this year is ‘Peace for our common home’ aligned with a quote from Mary MacKillop, ‘Remember, we are but travelers here’ circa 1866. Our faith in life was evident as the College community gathered in the Tenison Woods Centre where a sense of unity was demonstrated by the number of people that gathered in reverence despite the extreme heat. Principal, Mr Rory Kennedy exclaimed that, “Our faith is and remains always the life of our college.” Our College vision is grounded in Gospel values and the tradition of St Mary of the Cross. Celebrating all life. Challenging all people. Dreaming the new day. This is the vision that helps MacKillop open its doors to invite the community to jointly live out our Gospel values. “At MacKillop we strive to encourage individuals to reach their full potential as life-long learners by providing an innovative, challenging and collaborative learning and teaching environment in a rapidly evolving society” – Mr Rory Kennedy Established in 1970 with an initial enrolment of 102 girls, MacKillop is a Catholic Co-educational Secondary College named after Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop, co-founder of the congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart. Since then, the College has educated a large portion of the Catholic Community and is proud of its current status. Principal, Rory Kennedy, says the College is committed to each student’s intellectual, emotional, spiritual, physical and psychological growth by fostering leadership and empowering them as faith filled, discerning citizens of its school community.

Catholic Education

“With a comprehensive and well-balanced curriculum, programs have been designed to prepare students with the tools and skills needed to effectively problem solve, research and channel inner creation,” continues Mr Kennedy. Our curriculum incorporates intensive learning within a positive, dynamic and adaptive learning and teaching environment. This promotes a culture of enquiry and the creative exploration of ideas. MacKillop endeavours to provide outstanding education that integrates faith, life and culture and Mr Kennedy emphasises that our actions strive to ensure that the College’s leadership remains true to the mission of the Church. We acknowledge the gifts and achievements of all through the school liturgies, assemblies and numerous celebrations. He clearly articulates that “The College pursues excellence in learning and teaching to support the vision of Catholic education in the development of the whole person, founded upon Gospel values. The College supports wellbeing by affirming the intrinsic dignity of each individual embracing diversity and empowering active citizenship”. Our community strives to follow in the footsteps of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop and in Mr Kennedy’s words he concludes with “We are so proud of who she was and still is to us.”

ASSUMPTION COLLEGE An inclusive and transformative Marist community

I

n words taken from its mission statement, Assumption College Kilmore strives to be “an inclusive and transformative Marist community”, inspiring its members “to shape the future with audacity and hope”. The college wants its people (students, their families and staff) of all ages and backgrounds to feel welcomed and nourished. This learning community is enriched by the presence of its boarders, either weekday or full-time, many of whom hail from families on the land. Boarders enjoy modern accommodation and five-day boarding is particularly popular with senior students who live within an hour’s drive of Kilmore. They have access to one-on-one tutoring by teachers during weeknight study and the camaraderie that develops often leads to life-long friendships. Academic boarding scholarships are offered to those entering years 10 and 11. Assumption’s rural and urban families create a unique social environment that calls for a courageous discernment of evolving times, and an agility of response that ensures our students learn to know, to be competent,

to live together and, most especially, to grow into the best version of themselves. All aspects of college life are directed at helping this to happen in light of Gospel values and the five Marist characteristics: presence, simplicity, love of work, in the way of Mary and family spirit. The curriculum is designed to equip students with the core knowledge and skills to prepare them to be good citizens and to instil in them a love of life-long learning so they can cope in a vastly changing world. At years 7 and 8 the focus is on subjects that offer breadth and balance, where students study all areas of the Victorian Curriculum, and are exposed to an array of digital and design technologies. They begin to make elective choices in years 9 and 10 where the focus is on pathways and choice. Students can select up to 16 semester-based electives over these years, providing a highly personalised learning experience and promoting student ownership of their own education. In the senior years, up to 30 VCE studies are offered, as well as numerous VET and VCAL courses and schoolbased apprenticeships.

DE LA SALLE COLLEGE Quality Education, Inclusive Community

A

Our obligation ... is to provide a holistic education for life in contemporary society.

t De La Salle College we practise the five core principles as set forth by our founder St John Baptist de La Salle:

1. Respect for all people: We honour and respect the dignity of all individuals. 2. Quality education: We engage in quality education together as students and staff by thinking critically and striving for personal best. 3. Inclusive community: We celebrate diversity and welcome all members to our community. 4. Concern for the poor and social justice: We are in solidarity with the poor and advocate for those without a voice. 5. Faith in the presence of God: We believe in the living presence of God in our students, in our community and in our world. Principal Peter Houlihan says, “Our obligation to the young men entrusted to our care is to provide a holistic

education for life in contemporary society; an education which is engaging, rigorous and inspiring. This is shared in an environment where the inherent dignity of each child is recognised and he feels valued, safe, encouraged and there’s always someone who believes in him.” In keeping with our Lasallian ethos students are expected to contribute to the community through volunteer and fundraising work for local and international communities, developing key leadership skills including selflessness, innovation and initiative, as well as compassion for others. As we do not have a designated priority parish catchment zone we draw widely from all parts of Melbourne, with all parish primary schools given priority in the enrolment process.

A PERSONALISED EDUCATION De La Salle College is an inclusive, Catholic community with a focus on personalised learning and achievement. Every student is given the challenge and support he needs to excel both in the classroom and beyond. We pride ourselves on our ability to tailor each boy’s learning pathway from Year 4 all the way through to the senior years.

Why Choose Santa Maria College? Santa Maria College offers students a holistic education for girls from Year 7 to 12. Founded by the Sisters of the Good Samaritan of the Order of St Benedict in 1904, the College continues to retain its reputation as a school of choice in the Northern suburbs of Melbourne. Enriched by its Catholic culture and emphasis on the importance of respectful relationships, the aim for students to ourish in faith, learning and life, is at the heart of its mission. Santa Maria College is an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) World School delivering the Middle Years Program from Year 7 to 10. The IB is a contemporary framework for learning which fosters strong skills in inquiry, innovation, critical thinking and reection leading to excellent foundations for success in the senior levels. Santa Maria College has proudly been involved in The Duke of Edinburgh Award offering Bronze, Silver and Gold. It is a balanced, non-competitive program of voluntary activities that encourages personal discovery and growth, self-reliance, perseverance, responsibility and service to the community. We believe the Duke of Edinburgh provides students to challenge gender stereotypes, work in partnership with the wider community and to push themselves to new heights. In addition, many co-curricular and immersion opportunities are made available to the students, allowing each girl to develop resilience, discover their strengths and passions and grow to be young women of spirit and compassion.

SACRED HEART GIRLS’ COLLEGE Sacred Heart successfully integrates academic excellence with personal development

S

acred Heart Girls’ College was established by the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions (RNDM) in 1957. When Euphrasie Barbier formed The Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions Congregation in Lyon, France in 1861, she took the name Mother Mary of the Heart of Jesus. It is from her name and her special devotion to the Sacred Heart, that our College is named. The Founding Sisters brought with them the wonderful traditions of their Congregation. While the Sisters no longer administer the College, their spirit and influence remain in both the academic and faith life of the school. The international character of the RNDMs provides the College with many wonderful links with schools and missions around the world. The richly multicultural community of Sacred Heart, with approximately 1000 students and 100 specialist staff, is one where Gospel values are not only taught but also lived. Sacred Heart successfully integrates academic excellence with personal development and Christian leadership within the Catholic tradition. It provides a happy, supportive and disciplined setting conducive to

the achievement of individual success in learning and the fostering of confident, responsible young women. Our learning and teaching program seeks to equip students with knowledge, skills and attributes required to take their rightful place in society as the leaders of the future. Our faith-based values ensure that they approach the challenges before them with a sense of optimism and hope. Students are encouraged to lead with love, compassion and justice. Our co-curricular program includes many opportunities for students to build resilience, teamwork, leadership and public speaking skills. This is fostered through the many and varied activities in the faith, social justice, sporting and cultural arenas. Specific programs such as the Year 9 City Experience and Outdoor Education support our students in developing greater independence and resilience through experiential learning, coming to understand more about themselves, their community and their world. Valuable life- long skills to take into the future beyond Sacred Heart.

THE FEDERATION OF CATHOLIC REGIONAL COLLEGE A collaboration of five Catholic coeducational secondary colleges

T

he Federation of Catholic Regional Colleges (CRC) is a collaboration of five Catholic coeducational secondary colleges, located in the rapidly expanding North Western suburbs of Melbourne. Each College within the Federation is partially autonomous with its own administrative structures. As a complex, the federation is governed by the Catholic Regional Colleges Board and its students are identified in the community by a single uniform and College crest. The name of each college is a combination of its campus location prefixed with ’Catholic Regional College’. The first of the colleges to open was the St Albans campus in 1978, followed closely by the opening of a second campus in Melton West two years later. In 1982, a senior college in Sydenham was opened to cater for the senior secondary education of students from the Melton and St Albans campuses. In the same year an additional Years 7-10 college opened in North Keilor. As of 2007, the latest addition to the CRC Federation is a college in Caroline Springs. As a Catholic community we recognise the presence of God who challenges us to embrace Gospel values. We continually look for opportunities to express our Faith through practical action with regard to Social Justice. Students are expected to be involved in and participate fully in a selection of cocurricular activities. ACADEMY OF MARY IMMACULATE The City School for Girls

T

he Academy of Mary Immaculate is committed to girls’ education, and has a strong belief in the future role young women will play in Australia and the world. This vision is sustained by a 160-year heritage of Mercy values, which we celebrate in 2017. These values shape our school’s daily life, resulting in a friendly and supportive learning environment. From the beginning of the secondary journey, our structured Year 7 immersion program builds a sense of belonging and supports girls to grow their independence and take responsibility for their learning. Our education philosophy supports personal best achievements, and the Academy offers enrichment programs and clubs across the curriculum that extend student participation and learning. ‘Synergy’, the Year 9 cross-curricula program, focuses on ‘Melbourne as a global community’. Through inquiry-based learning, students develop the quality of their attention, awareness and focus. Such mindfulness will remain with them for life. We are the city school for girls, and each student benefits from Melbourne’s unique cultural and learning centres

ST KILDA Cultivatin boys’ character

A

t CBC we quickly get to know your son, ensuring he is a valued and well educated individual. Every student is known. As a small school with diverse programs he will neither be lost nor lacking stimulation. Educating boys since 1878, CBC St Kilda has a rich history of success and achievement. Our philosophies are based on the teachings of Edmund Rice who believed that effective learning takes place when students are nurtured and cared for and have a strong sense of purpose. Regular contact and reporting on each student’s participation and progress in all academic, sporting, cultural and pastoral pursuits means parents can be assured we are endeavouring to educate each boy academically, spiritually, socially and emotionally. CBC has an acclaimed Transition program and our four 75 minute daily lessons accommodate all ability levels, allowing sufficient time to consolidate learning, whilst scaffolding those who need support. We combine traditional and contemporary approaches across the curriculum. Our Year 9 Campus and Program allows the boys to complement their traditional studies with a variety of skills – gardening, cooking, community service

and multi-media. From that Campus the boys can walk to the Westbury Street main Campus, thus maintaining their link to the wider school community. Both Campuses are located close to numerous public transport options and are only minutes by train from Flinders Street station. The Main Campus and Year 9 Campus are both wireless sites and allocated iPads or Notebooks facilitate student learning. Valued partnerships enable us to offer VCE, VET and VCAL studies. CBC shares a range of senior classes with our adjacent sister school, Presentation College Windsor (PCW Melbourne), thus expanding the range of VCE subject choices on offer. Our VCAL students are exposed to many different certificates which become useful additions to their Curriculum Vitae, with an eye to future employment. The College has a range of international partnerships, giving students the opportunity to visit schools in Italy, Japan and India. At CBC we take pride in our ability to challenge and nurture students in ways that bring about their intellectual and emotional growth, in order to be the best equipped, most valued and creative contributors they can be in an ever-changing world.

Genazzano FCJ College Genazzano FCJ College is a Catholic day and boarding school located on Cotham Road, Kew. It is proud of its 128 year history, its past and present students, and importantly, its community. Together as educators, parents and friends, we work to create a learning environment permeated by the richness and traditions of our faith and the Ignatian heritage of the Sisters, Faithful Companions of Jesus. We are a community of faith, inspiring a passion for life, a love of learning and the courage and confidence to lead and serve others. Our values encourage our students from kindergarten to VCE to approach life with optimism, to be creative learners looking for ways to contribute to society and to be actively engaged with issues of social justice. The Genazzano community is vibrant and energetic, which seeks to positively influence all aspects of a student’s development. Here, learning and wellbeing go hand in hand.

Our College’s exceptional facilities are surrounded by beautiful park-like gardens, which collectively work to immerse students in a unique learning environment. Our students are located on a single campus which offers both Primary and Secondary students easy access to specialised facilities. Employing a ‘personal best’ model, Genazzano aims to identify the capacity of each girl and encourage her to reach her full potential. At every level of a girl’s learning, she will be challenged, stimulated and supported by a highly qualified teaching staff. The extraordinary co-curricular program on offer provides the girls with an array of activities to pursue in addition to their academic studies. From sport, music and the arts, to language immersion, social justice and public speaking, the program allows students of all ages and interests to explore and excel in over 150 semester-based activities. A Genazzano education encourages students to view the world critically, to be discerning in their decision-making and, most importantly, to view learning as a life long journey. 12334198-CB11-17

GENAZZANO FCJ COLLEGE A lesson in giving back at the 2016 GLS Breakfast

O

n a beautiful spring morning in Melbourne, the students and alumnae of Genazzano FCJ College, Loreto Mandeville and Sacré Cœur, came together on September 7 2016 at the 14th Annual GLS Breakfast, in celebration of three inspirational women. Held in the hallowed grounds of the MCG in the Members’ Dining room, the event was attended by almost 300 women and a handful of men! Although an early start, we were treated to amazing speakers, each with a different story to tell. The first was Dee Madigan (Loreto), Creative Director and owner of Campaign Edge advertising. Dee began her professional career as a teacher and joined the world of advertising in 1996. Next to speak was Libby Lyons (Sacré Cœur), the new Director of the Workplace Gender Equality Agency, responsible for driving change through working with employees and Government to improve women’s workforce participation, and reduce the gender pay gap. Libby has worked in both female and male dominated industries, heading up BHP Billiton’s Corporate Affairs for its Olympic Dam project! Libby is a passionate advocate

for equality, however her enduring message was the call for all women to be champions for each other and provide ongoing support. Monique Van den Boom (Genazzano), while the youngest of the trio had her own unique story. Monique takes us back to her school days, when she didn’t know what she wanted to be when she “grew up”, and while recognising some people fall naturally into a career, others don’t choose their pathway; it chooses them. For Monique Van den Boom (1997), it was the insight of Genazzano Careers Counsellor, Ms Lele, that opened her mind to the allied health sector and gave clarity to a year 10 student who was unsure about where life would take her. “I had the vague idea of medicine but I didn’t really want to be a doctor or a nurse,” says Van den Boom. “I also enjoyed making things, doing craft and taking a handson approach. The way Ms Lele walked me through the things I liked doing. She was fantastic, and the reason I discovered prosthetics and orthotics. I always say to my dad it was because of her and Genazzano that I’m doing what I doing. I owe her a massive thank you.”

Catholic Education

Van den Boom went on to complete a Bachelor of Prosthetics & Orthotics with honours at LaTrobe University, and for the past 13 years has worked in the UK and Australia along with several volunteer stints as Prosthetic Director for a not-for-profit organisation in Haiti. Of this work, Van den Boom displays both optimism at the progress being made and a delight in her ability to make a difference. “I’ve been to Haiti three times, where we provide a prosthetic service to people. I first went there just after the big earthquake and it’s been one of the best experiences career-wise and personally. I’ve made some fantastic friends and when you’re there you realise you are surrounded by people who are there for the same reason. “We barely scratch the surface (of the need), but the goal is to establish a sustainable clinic, train the locals and have it going when we’re not there as well. It’s a very important personal achievement for me, and it’s nice being in a job where people are grateful!” Van den Boom began her Genazzano journey in Year 7, and was one of only three girls from her local primary school to join the College. “Year 7 was a big year. Not just attending a school that was much bigger (than the local primary school) but also the independence that came with travelling on public transport by myself. I lived in East Doncaster so it was a fair commute.” However, her early worries were quickly eased. “I have three older brothers and no sisters. Being surrounded by girls was important for my parents and I absolutely loved it. I do recall being apprehensive going into Year 7 but very quickly I felt supported. “Prior to me, no one in my family had gone to Gen. I think my parents just wanted a school that provided a solid curriculum. I was into music at the time and the school had an excellent reputation in that area.”

Reflecting now, Van den Boom strongly credits the College with her adventurous spirit. “Genazzano encourages driven, motivated, independent women. The school was supportive, you didn’t have limits. It allowed for an exploration of what you might like to do, and it built your confidence. While I find myself being very driven, Genazzano definitely drew it out of me. It’s a big part of my personality now, taking risks and being fully involved.” With the education sector’s recent emphasis on encouraging girls to consider STEM careers as viable pathways, Van den Boom is happy to report that females are very well represented in her profession. “If you took a snapshot of prosthetics, say, 30 years ago, it would have been all males. But that’s mainly because the profession originated from boot makers, it was like a trade. The demographics now reflect more females and a much younger group. Clinically, the focus has changed where there are the patient-oriented assessments. You now see more females in those (higher management) positions.” In finishing, Van den Boom described the way she helps her clients achieve their goals and accept their new selfimage. As she explained, it’s not just about providing a device for a missing limb, it’s listening and helping them adapt and achieve their goals. Taking on the world has led Van den Boom into what she describes as an incredibly rewarding career, and she encourages all current students to challenge themselves and be their best. “Try and take any opportunity you can. Don’t sit back, get out there and explore. You don’t have to be the bright, bubbly clown - I wasn’t - but there was a lot more to gain by putting your hand up and trying everything the school had to offer.” www.genazzano.vic.edu.au

THOMAS CARR COLLEGE In 2017 the College will see the addition of a state-of-the-art Performing Arts Centre

T

homas Carr College is an innovative educational community, providing the latest technology, buildings and facilities. We offer an engaging curriculum which equips our students with the knowledge, skills and attributes for the future. Powerful learning is facilitated by dedicated staff who nurture faith and positive relationships. The holistic education provided helps students to develop independence, informed decision making, and respect for themselves and others. Modern facilities allow our students to excel in an environment conducive to learning. In 2014 the College completed the first stage of a multi-million building program with the construction of a $7 million contemporary Learning Centre for Year 7 and 8 students. In 2015, the College’s $3 million Trade Training Centre was opened allowing for the delivery of Certificate II and III courses in Carpentry, Furniture Making, Brick and Block laying. The facility has the latest in technology, a wellresourced workshop and learning studios. The Centre ensures that the College continues to provide a variety of different pathways through senior secondary schooling. In 2017 the College will see the addition of a state-of-theart Performing Arts Centre which will include a 500 seat auditorium, the latest technical production equipment, lighting and sound, dedicated drama and music rooms and a recording studio. Thomas Carr College is a friendly community where each person is valued and spirituality is nurtured. In the spirit of Archbishop Carr, young men and women are encouraged to strive for excellence according to their individual gifts and are challenged to pursue justice in the world. iD9 Program at Thomas Carr College’s Good Samaritan Country Campus On Sunday August 3, 2015 Thomas Carr’s Good Samaritan Country Campus was officially opened. The refurbished Good Samaritan Convent in Coragulac, near Colac, is home to the College’s Year 7 Orientation camps and, even more importantly, is a key part of Thomas Carr College’s innovative and unique iD9 program - a specialised curriculum that includes a 3 week residential country experience at Year 9 level. Activities and project work are based around the local Coragulac and Otway environments of lake, coast and forest. One of the aims is to support students in developing a set of knowledge, skills and behaviours that

will prepare them to create a future which is sustainable, by developing an understanding of the interaction between social, economic and environmental systems and how to manage them. Students will attend the Good Samaritan Campus during this focus to gain a deeper understanding of this interaction in a rural environment. Deeper learning can be achieved through collaborative curriculum planning; for example, the concept of ‘ecofootprint’ may be taught within a Science, Geography and Personal Learning program, where students may calculate their own eco-footprint, compare it with other students, schools and/or countries, make resolutions about reducing their footprint and evaluate the effectiveness of personal strategies used to reduce it. The Good Samaritan Campus experience aims to provide all students with an exciting and challenging program in an environment that is safe, caring, structured and engaging. The emphasis throughout the three week experience is on learning through doing.

J

ohn Paul College is a co-educational Catholic Secondary School in Frankston. The College aims to be a centre of excellence and inspiration within the community. Students are encouraged to be motivated and passionate about both their learning and their community involvement. Our mission statement - with Him is the fullness of life - is lived out in our College. We encourage students to take advantage of youth ministry and leadership opportunities. We aim to educate the ‘whole’ person for life beyond school. A sense of belonging and community are integral to the culture of the school and a sense of self-worth is developed in each student. Our diverse curriculum is personalised to suit individual needs. For senior students we offer programs in Victorian Certificate of Education, Vocational Education and Training and Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning. Every student is encouraged to pursue a path which is right for them and to be the very best they can be. Life at JPC is challenging and full of opportunity. Students flourish with the plethora of opportunities presented to them. Students can be involved in a whole array of sports as well as taking part in debating, public speaking, community service, youth ministry, social justice, theatre sports, chess club and performing arts activities. Through these activities students grow significantly in confidence, identity and pride. Social justice initiatives are flourishing through our fundraising efforts and immersion programs to the Philippines and East Timor. Students give willingly of themselves and their time in volunteer programs such as our own JPC community soup van, Ozanam House, City Life Café, community breakfasts or blood donation just to name a few. We are proud of our young people who are truly inspirational in their service to others. Our first class facilities include a beautifully appointed Resource Centre, an excellent Food Technology Centre and state of the art science laboratories. The Ngargee Centre for Performing and Visual Arts is a beautifully appointed space; comprising modern facilities for music, drama, dance, media and fine arts. The College grounds are beautifully landscaped, providing plenty of space for students to relax, learn and play. The Digital Classroom John Paul College aims to provide classrooms which

are digitally smart. Technologically, the college is well resourced and able to cater for the rapidly changing digital needs of staff and students. An ipad program is currently in place for the middle school. Older students have the option to be part of a BYOD program. The college aims to integrate technology within the normal learning program while still allowing for the development of traditional skills. Students are encouraged to use technology in an imaginative creative and innovative manner. Within their learning, students are encouraged to digitally explore, to navigate, to evaluate and to create. With guidance they become digitally wise. Staff use multiple forms of media and technology to develop and enhance individual learning as well as to encourage collaborative learning, sharing of information and student mentoring. Technology allows for ongoing feedback to parents, thus improving each student’s learning journey. Parents are encouraged to keep abreast of their child’s learning via easy access to the college’s learning management system. Parents can view class activities and homework and even access media presentations. The digital classroom allows more effective communication between teachers, students and parents. The college offers students opportunities to use technology in an engaging, unique (and safe) manner. While students are taught how to use various technologies, it is the activities that these technologies enable that are paramount. Technology is integrated into every subject; through research, digital presentations, movie making, and the writing of music… John Paul College embraces the endless applications of technology and encourages students to fully explore the possibilities.

ALL HANDS RISE FOR A SCHOOL SEACHANGE Choosing a home near your school of choice

T

he best school zones in Australia come at a price, with homes in desirable zones sometimes costing up to $20,000 extra. The result is affluent enclaves around the best schools as well as the emergence of a range of tactics by parents living out of zone to ensure their child is enrolled. Some families even go as far as to pack up their homes and move to areas within particular school zones. It doesn’t have to be so complicated though, with property developers now recognising the need and creating brand new communities that have it all, including quality education. In two of Melbourne’s newest areas, Rockbank North and Donnybrook, new communities are emerging with high quality education from day one. Importantly, in these areas it isn’t about bringing in a new school, but rather partnering with an established high achieving educational facility to expand its footprint. At Woodlea in Rockbank North, Mirvac and Victoria Investment and Properties (VIP) have partnered with Bacchus Marsh Grammar to deliver an Early Learning

The brand new Hume Anglican Grammar campus at Olivine will offer innovative learning models for students from Prep to Secondary school. Centre which opened in January 2017, as well as a campus for primary school enrolments from Prep to Grade Six planned to open in 2019. With a strong understanding of the importance of quality education in providing the best opportunities for Victorian families, Mirvac has recently announced it will also deliver a new Hume Anglican Grammar School campus at its latest development, Olivine in Donnybrook. With the school almost at capacity for enrolment, Hume Anglican Grammar Principal Bill Sweeney said the new campus will be an integral part of the community, where more members of the Hume and Whittlesea areas can access an outstanding educational experience.

“One of the hardest matters I must attend to as Principal is to inform parents they have been unsuccessful in finding a place for their child,” Mr Sweeney said.

“It gives me immense relief that now this conversation can turn to one of hope with the new campus planned to open in 2019.

“Olivine will be one of Melbourne’s most anticipated residential communities, promising exceptional amenity and community assets from day one,” Ms Anderson said.

“Young families are looking for quality education for their children and Hume Anglican Grammar at Olivine will provide this opportunity for 1200 students on the expansive eight-hectare site.

“We recognise that families want access to high quality education, therefore we felt partnering with such an established and respected school in Hume Anglican Grammar meets their needs.

“This campus will also provide a focal point where Olivine’s residents can come together with other families, building a strong sense of belonging and community,” he said. The brand new Hume Anglican Grammar campus at Olivine will offer innovative learning models for students from Prep to Secondary school. Located next to Olivine’s new town centre in the heart of the masterplanned community, enrolments for Hume Anglican Grammar are anticipated for as early as 2019. Shortly after, a childcare, kindergarten and public primary school will be delivered for the next generation. Mirvac’s General Manager of Residential Victoria, Elysa Anderson, said partnering with existing schools to

“Mirvac understands the importance of creating communities that provide access to quality education and are proud to be partnering with Hume Anglican Grammar to give more families the opportunity to attend this renowned local school,” she said. Set on 187 hectares in Donnybrook, Olivine is planned to strengthen and exceed previous benchmarks set for education, community wellbeing, urban design, sustainability and housing diversity in greenfield communities. To be developed over 10 to 15 years, Olivine will be home to approximately 7000 people across 2250 homes, with the first stage planned to be released in early 2017.

ST ALOYSIUS COLLEGE Because We’re here for their Success. Nothing Less

A

s a discerning parent looking for the very best secondary education for your daughter, I welcome you to the page of St Aloysius College. No doubt having read a few other pages you may have been struck more by the similarities of schools rather than perhaps being attracted by the differences of many school editorials - most schools, for example, espouse environments of care and nurturing, of academic excellence and of opportunity, and that is because most schools do offer varying degrees of these important characteristics. At St Aloysius College we build everything we do on strong fundamentals, and an equally strong culture, where we believe anything is possible. We invest in our teachers, choosing those with expert knowledge and a dedication for continuous improvement. Today, these teachers are people and datadriven, concentrating on perfecting both the hard and soft skills required by students in 2017 and beyond. These teachers promote an active engagement with families and focus on the personalisation of the learning journey. I’d like that journey for you to begin straight away. Ultimately, the very best advertising for what makes St Aloysius different from other schools are our students so please accept an invitation to come and visit, see our classrooms, our learning and our teaching. Once here, you’ll notice how personalisation is possible with only 500 girls, ensuring class sizes where every child is known; you’ll also

notice how, as a Catholic girls’ College in the Mercy tradition, the values of hospitality, justice, diversity and inclusiveness are lived out in an environment where thinking is challenged and curriculum is rigorous. On further inspection you’ll learn of various programs which ensure this personalisation is genuine - programs for the gifted and talented, programs of learning support, programs focusing on Science and Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. As you wander the corridors, you’ll marvel at how classrooms have been transformed into learning spaces which inspire, architecturally designed for how girls’ learn best; you’ll further notice how seamlessly yet ubiquitously technology enhances and enables a multitude of opportunities for all to learn. Our similarities with other high performing schools ensure that we have the soundest of foundations but our differences to them are tangible and explicit. Everything we do, we do so to ensure each girl is enthused and engaged in a learning journey that opens door after door; we do so to ensure families are partners in learning and we do so because our staff are experts in the education of girls for a future still in creation. I’d like your journey to begin. Please contact the College Community Development Manager on 9329 0411 to join one of our regular ‘Talk & Tours’. REFINING THE ROLE OF CAREERS GUIDANCE Careers Practitioner Amanda Siva on The Academy of Mary Immaculate’s careers program

T

he Academy of Mary Immaculate educates young women about careers of the future, giving them the information and resources they need to develop their enterprise skills. The core of the Academy careers program, run by Careers Practitioner Amanda Siva, is to recognise how each student can work hard during her schooling years to open up as many opportunities for her post-school life. Ms Siva’s belief is that each result a girl achieves - academic and extra-curricular - is a checkpoint along the way to somewhere else.

The careers program responds to the girls’ needs rather than repeat what they did the previous year.

In Year 11, we ATAR will be calculated and the various ways to fund further education, gap years and applying for international exchange programs.’ The final year of the careers program, Year 12, prepares Academy girls for life after school by providing them with a clear understanding of what the year can mean for their future. It sets the necessary direction and focus for girls to achieve their goals.

‘In Year 12, my role becomes more about facilitating their transition from school into the next phase of life,’ Ms Siva says. ‘My sessions revolve around the process of applying, how the system works and what will happen afterwards. I hope by Year 12 that we have developed a good relationship so that the girls feel supported in their decision-making.’

Overall, the careers experience at the Academy of Mary Immaculate offers the young women of tomorrow’s workforce a unique foundation based on one-on-one career coaching and strong connections with organisations in the greater community.

SIENA COLLEGE Our students have a daily, lived experience of women who are leaders at all levels

S

iena College is a Catholic school in the Dominican tradition, offering young women an education which will inspire and challenge them to make intelligent and responsible use of their personal gifts and develop a lifelong love of learning. Our students have a daily, lived experience of women who are leaders at all levels, from a broad based Student Representative Council, to the women from past decades on whose shoulders we stand. Our patron, St Catherine of Siena, broke the bonds of what was expected of a woman in the 14th Century by speaking Truth. She challenged those in power and committed herself to a life of prayer and service of others.

and responsibility. Emphasis is placed on personal excellence in all endeavours and we aim to nurture our student’s individual gifts and talents and to build their self-esteem and sense of connectedness. Student learning extends beyond the walls of the College through a broad range of curricular and cocurricular programs designed to further develop knowledge and skills or uncover hidden talents.

Our Dominican tradition places particular emphasis on diversity and the unique gifts of every person. We are energised and inspired by each other and find joy in our work, our learning and our community.

Programs are offered in Drama, Music, Visual Arts, Leadership, Social Justice, Debating, Public Speaking, Learning and Enhancement / Extension and Sport. As a member of Girls’ Sport Victoria (GSV), students have the opportunity to participate socially or compete at the elite level. Cultural and Language Immersions are offered to China, France and Italy. Immersion opportunities are also offered to South Africa and an Indigenous immersion to the Central Australian desert.

Siena College offers a richly stimulating and contemporary education that makes student learning exciting for young women. We encourage our students to engage in critical reflection on the world, develop a love of learning, an appreciation of culture and beauty and a spirit of freedom

BEING OUR BEST FOR JESUS IN SANDHURST F

or well over a century families throughout central and northern Victoria have enjoyed the privilege of Catholic Education for their children. In modern times, the provision of Catholic Education has expanded due to increasing demand. Catholic Education Sandhurst spans central and north eastern Victoria, providing Catholic Education to over 18,500 students in 56 educational settings across the diocese, including primary, secondary and specialist learning settings. The Diocese includes the major regional areas of Bendigo, Echuca, Shepparton, Wangaratta and Wodonga as well as many vibrant smaller communities within the diocese border which extends from Kerang in the States North West, to Corryong in the North East. One of the key features of Sandhurst Schools is that they strive to be places of faith, of academic excellence and spiritual formation, exposing students to the beauty of The Arts and to the importance of social justice and global issues. Our schools offer families a strong curriculum with a full range of subjects and pathways for all students; with Catholic identity at the heart of all educational endeavours and the broader life of the school. A focus on literacy and numeracy is paramount to the success of students in Sandhurst schools and contributes to building a culture of school improvement and performance. The theme for Catholic Education Sandhurst in 2017 is ‘Witnessing and being our best for Jesus’. This theme challenges our school communities to look inwardly and to seize opportunities to be greater places of faith as we engage in the mission of the Church. The Bishop of Sandhurst, Bishop Leslie Tomlinson believes that Catholic Schools play an important role in the evangelising mission of the Church. Catholic schools, together with other Catholic agencies within the diocese, are intimately involved in spreading the Good News. “The person of Jesus Christ is at the centre of all our educational endeavours, All who work in Catholic education seek to make Christ known and loved,” said Bishop Tomlinson. Flexible learning settings situated in Bendigo, Shepparton and Wangaratta cater for young people who are

One of the key features of Sandhurst Schools is that they strive to be places of faith, of academic excellence and spiritual formation. struggling to find their way in mainstream schooling. These exceptional programs are re-engaging students and providing hope and a future for our most vulnerable. Many graduates go on to vocational training, employment or return to mainstream schooling. Catholic Education Sandhurst is committed to The Arts through an established partnership with a3-Australian Arts Alive, a branch of the Australian School of Performing Arts. Recognised as one of the premier providers of performing arts experiences in the country, the Australian School of Performing Arts ensures that Sandhurst students are exposed to a high quality Arts program. Music teachers throughout the diocese benefit from professional learning opportunities which creates classroom learning experiences for all students. As we look forward to all that 2017 will bring we reflect on the importance of community, of the ability to come together in times of crisis and to celebrate in moments of great joy. Our schools are important places of hope and good learning, where students are nurtured and challenged; and where teaching and learning is inspired by the Catholic story.

WORKING THROUGH TANGLE OF WORDS Dyslexia diagnosis gives parents and child a sense of direction

W

hen Mary’s* son was diagnosed with dyslexia in Grade 2, she knew there was a long process ahead of them.

But thanks to the wonderful staff at Caulfield Grammar School, her son is now thriving and his self-confidence has boomed. Mary said the diagnosis several years ago gave her and her husband a sense of understanding as to why their son had been struggling to read and write in school. “It gave us a sense of direction,” Mary said. “Dyslexia covers a wide range of learning difficulties, and can affect different children in different ways. From the word go he struggled to recognise letters and write his name.” Mary said her son was tested for a number of different issues, but it was when they saw a child psychologist that the diagnosis occurred. Since then, she and her husband, as well as the staff at Caulfield Grammar School have been working closely with him to improve academically and gain self-confidence. “He was too young to understand anything about dyslexia when he was first diagnosed, but we have always been honest with him about it,” she said. “It was only when he was in about Grade 4 that he started to realise he had learning difficulties. We told him he had dyslexia and had to work harder than most of his peers.”

diagnosis, and needing extra support, her son’s confidence suffered in primary school and took an even bigger hit before he made the transition to secondary school. “He went into (secondary school) terrified because suddenly he was leaving a class of 50 kids to enter a class of 180 kids. He didn’t know where he would be in the pecking order or how he would cope. It was a big change, let alone when you also have to struggle with dyslexia,” she said. “He started off on a bit of a back foot, failing his first maths test. But he had a fabulous teacher who put in place a whole range of programs to help him, and before long, he worked out he could do it. He has gone from being a student where he had to be supported, to now being able to get A’s on his own. It’s huge for his confidence.” Mary said that while her son was thriving in school, he still had to put in a lot of hard work and dedication. “It’s a long process,” she said. “He can’t be too relaxed about his school work. He knows he has to put in a lot of hard yards. “It’s heartbreaking as a parent to see your child struggle but he’s doing so well now. He’s even started to read for his own enjoyment. It’s fabulous to see.” *Not her real name.

Mary’s son is now in Grade 8 and is now thriving thanks to encouragement from his family and support programs at the school. “As soon as the diagnosis was made, Caulfield Grammar School set up support programs to help him,” she said. “He was offered the reading recovery program, which is usually only offered to older people, and he persisted with that until the end of Grade 4 or 5. Even then he had English support.” Mary said that due to the

A SENSE OF BELONGING Catholic school parents say their children are genuinely cared for and understood by their teachers

C

atholic Education Melbourne Executive Director Stephen Elder says the greatest compliment he has ever received was overhearing one parent tell another: “If you want your child to be truly happy, then you should send them to a Catholic school.” “Our schools encourage students to learn through enquiry, and teachers are encouraged to support students in their search for understanding and meaning,” Mr Elder explains. “We want our students to explore the big questions in life with a clear vision of what is good about themselves, their relationships and the world in which they live.” This emphasis on the whole student is what sets Catholic schools apart. Catholic school parents say their children are genuinely cared for and understood by their teachers, creating a sense of belonging that enables them to discover the gifts they have been given and develop them to the best of their abilities. Sarah, whose daughter moved from the government system last year, says “You get the feeling in the Catholic system that your child is a real individual, not just a name on a roll, and that you’re part of a far broader community, a real family.” Teacher Liam Buckley explains this approach well. “The thing I like about working in the Catholic school environment is that we genuinely put the student’s wellbeing at the heart of everything we do,” he says.

74

Catholic Education

Our schools encourage students to learn through enquiry.

“School for our students is not just about the learning of content but the development of the person as a whole, which underpins what a Catholic education should be about.” Mr Elder says Catholic schools work hard to discover what matters to each student and identify what they want from life and what will give them joy. “Without a strong sense of self, successful learning and achievement is difficult to attain. Self-regard and selfesteem are powerful motivators in all walks of life and it’s no different when it comes to education,” he explains. “Understanding who you are, what you want and how best to get there is part of a contemporary education. With every choice we nurture a love of learning and a desire for knowledge because it’s from that starting point that the best results follow.”

GROWTH AND SUCCESS Continued academic achievement is one of the key reasons for the appeal of a Catholic education

A

cademic results, wellbeing reports, enrolment figures and affordability all point to a flourishing future for Catholic education in Victoria.

This year over 210,000 students – or close to one in four Victorian school children – will enjoy a Catholic education in one of nearly 500 schools state-wide. Continued academic achievement is one of the key reasons for the appeal of a Catholic education. University of Melbourne research on the “value add” performance of non-government education has found that Catholic schools add an average of six points to tertiary admission ranks, or ATAR scores, at the career defining end of a student’s school journey. Catholic schools have continued to shine in Victorian Certificate of Education results, performing above the state average and showing significant improvements in quality. The average median score achieved by Catholic school students in last year’s VCE results came in at almost two points higher that the state average, while the number of schools where all students satisfactorily completed the VCE increased by well over 10 per cent. A major Australian Bureau of Statistics survey has found that three out of four Catholic secondary students will go on to university. Curtin University research released last year shows a Catholic pays real-world dividends. It has found that Australians who attended Catholic schools enjoy a wage premium of around 10 per cent. But academic achievement is only one part of a Catholic education. The Curtin University work also singles out for special mention findings that graduates from Catholic schools enjoy higher levels of life satisfaction and happiness. “The stream of active contributors, good citizens and welladjusted young people that graduate from our schools each year reinforce our philosophy and direction,” Catholic Education Melbourne Executive Director Stephen Elder says. The ABS work also shows that Catholic students are far less likely to be bullied than those attending government schools. Mr Elder says Catholic Education Melbourne is striving to be a leader in child safety.

This year over 210,000 students – or close to one in four Victorian school children – will enjoy a Catholic education in one of nearly 500 schools state-wide.

“We believe that all individuals deserve inherent human dignity as beings created in God’s image,” he explains. “Many of the wellbeing programs within our schools live out the Gospel values, faith and shared belief that we should all aspire to a common good. “We will always aim at creating zero-bullying environments based on a genuine concern for others.” Parents also feel Catholic schools represent value for money, speaking of their affordability. Mr Elder says all these factors are leading to a booming demand for Catholic schools. More than half a dozen new schools are planned to open by the start of the 2020 school year in the MelbourneGeelong area: primary schools in Craigieburn West, Wallan East, Torquay North, Wollert, Sunbury and Bannockburn and secondary colleges in Armstrong Creek and Wyndham Vale. There are also proposals for new schools in Melton South, Werribee, Bacchus Marsh, Greenvale, Merrifield West, Doreen West and Docklands/Fishermans Bend in the first half of next decade.

t John’s School, located in the inner northern suburb of Clifton Hill and founded in 1886, is firmly focused on being a family and community centred school. We have a strong commitment to student wellbeing and addressing individual learning needs. Our dedicated, caring staff seek to establish positive partnerships with parents and the wider community. As a Catholic primary school, St John’s celebrates the diversity of our small community, with families identifying Australia, Europe, Asia and Africa as places of origin. Fundamental to the Catholic tradition is respect for the sacredness of others; knowing the stories of our families helps us to appreciate the sacredness of each person we encounter. We believe that a small school is a smart choice for many children with many benefits on offer. Our children know each other across year levels and our staff are familiar with the names and stories of each child. Our staff believe it is important for our children to know

what they are learning and why, where they are at in their learning journey and what is next. As a learning community we strive to approach learning with a growth mindset that encourages perseverance and a continuing development in understanding, skills, attitudes and knowledge. We look forward to welcoming anyone interested in knowing more about what we have to offer.

NEW CATHOLIC SCHOOL FOR SALE DIOCESE T

he new Catholic primary school planned for Cowes on Phillip Island is yet another example of the strong growth of Catholic education in the Diocese of Sale. The new school will be named Our Lady Star of the Sea Primary School and will be built at a cost of more than $5 million. The school will eventually cater for up to 180 students. Stage one is likely to consist of four classrooms, a staffroom and administration area and will be completed for the start of the 2018 school year, with subsequent stages also planned. Our Lady Star of the Sea will be the third Catholic primary school to open in the Diocese of Sale in six years. There has been a necessity for a Catholic primary school on Phillip Island for some time, according to the Director of Catholic Education in the Diocese of Sale, Maria Kirkwood. “We are delighted to be able to satisfy the needs of those parents who have been calling for a Catholic school on Phillip Island,” said Ms Kirkwood. Ms Kirkwood said Catholic schools provide an extensive education for students in a caring and pastoral

environment. “Parents who choose to enrol their children in a Catholic school do so with particular requirements in mind. Catholic schools aim to educate the whole person and while academic achievement is very important, instilling the right values in young people to be good citizens and community-minded is also an important goal,” Ms Kirkwood said. One of the highlights of the 2017 school year in the Diocese of Sale will be the annual Catholic Education Week, which this year will be held from April 28 to May 5. The theme is ‘Unity in Diversity.’ Catholic schools in the Diocese of Sale will participate in a number of activities, including a Mass and Leadership Dinner.

St Patrick’s Parish Primary P Schools and Early Learning Centre Our aim is that St Patrick’s School and the recently opened St Clare’s School (in Majestic Drive Officer) will provide an atmosphere that gives each child a sense of self worth and provides encouragement in a secure environment. Each child, through a belief in themselves, in others and in a loving God is encouraged to strive for excellence and to have hope for the future. Every young person must also accept responsibility for their own actions and behavior. We believe that children learn best when they are happy – when the learning is relevant to their lives and to their stage of development and readiness. They learn when there are good relationships among those involved in the learning process. This will obviously include parents as the primary educators of their children, as well as teachers. Both Schools have a dedicated staff, both teaching and ancillary and are part of a supportive, Christian community. We warmly invite prospective parents to meet with us and to view the excellent educational and recreational facilities provided at both schools. Catholic schools are places where life and faith and hope are celebrated, and Catholic Education Melbourne Executive Director Stephen Elder says there has recently been great cause for celebration as young people connect with the authenticity and compassion of Pope Francis. “Students need to feel a sense of belonging, purpose and connectedness, in their lives to flourish,” Mr Elder says, “particularly in the face of the many challenges of our diverse, complex and ever changing modern world. “Our Catholic way of understanding people and the world provides students with a sense of hope and purpose in their lives. It adds to their resilience and a capacity to make a difference. “At the very heart of our educational vision is a sense that the world is good and graced. This sense of grace changes everything about the way we relate to each other and our contribution to the wider community.” Catholic education in Victoria has rallied to this call, drawing more than 150 years of public service. “We have a very rich past and our future is just as strong,” Mr Elder says. “We welcome all families who seek a Catholic education for their child and we believe that

what we are offering will set our students up for lifelong success and fulfilment.” Principal of Mater Christi College, Belgrave, Mary FitzGerald, has seen the results first-hand. “We can and do make a difference in the world,” she says. “To walk alongside young people, to witness their joy, determination and hopefulness, it is forever inspiring and amazing.” Anthony Banks, the Mornington, agrees.

Introducing our Headstart Program‌... In 2017, we introduced our new prep orientation program called ‘Headstart’. The program is designed to give both children and parents an insight into how our school operates and provide opportunities for a smooth transition from kinder to school. Over a period of 8 weeks parents and children attended a weekly one hour session with our experienced early childhood staff, providing children with opportunities for social interaction and structured learning activities. Parents also attended information sessions that enabled them to gain further information about our school and how they can support and be involved in their children’s education. They also had the opportunity to meet new families. The program will commence mid term 3 and conclude mid term 4. Enrolments for 2018 open on Tuesday 18th April. Forms will be available from the School Office. Information sessions on Wednesday 26th at 7.00pm and Friday 28th April at 9.30am

MOTHER OF GOD SCHOOL ARDEER Preparing the way

M

other of God School (MOGS) remains a small school where the individual and the community are equally valued. We proudly operate in the Brigidine tradition of being faithful to our Catholic heritage; welcoming all, especially the most vulnerable; celebrating all that is good with joy and gratitude; engendering a love of learning and imaging and practicing justice and service. With our focus on learning and teaching, student wellbeing, the Arts and a vibrant kitchen garden program, we work to ensure that all students can experience success. Schools are challenging places to work, but they are also inspiring places to be every day. Like all schools, we are challenged with providing a comprehensive learning program that will enable all of our young people to fully participate in society in the 21st century. We know we do a very good job at that.

We dream a school where straight rows of desks will give way to circles of learners. Where everyone will be welcomed into the circle so that, seeing one another, we shall see there are other ways to learn. Ours is a small school with big expectations. We are a school community where everyone is known by name. We highly value the learning partnership between school and home and actively work to engage our families in a shared conversation about learning. You are invited to come and see, we are sure you will not be disappointed.
