For law and order ing leaders ... (they) inspired me to get involved. “I first started volunteering with the Liberal Party when I was 18. “I first got involved at Melbourne University, joined the Liberal Club there and got involved in campus politics.” Ms Vallence said while she was passionate about many issues within Evelyn, she said people kept speaking to her about law and order. “People in Evelyn, and right across Victoria, are fast becoming victims of crime,” she said. “We’ve seen a really large increase

Fresh from her pre-selection for Evelyn last week, Bridget Vallence took the time to speak with the ‘Mail’ about her road to the 2018 Victorian Election. Christine Fyffe’s soon-to-be successor said her candidacy was never a fait accompli, enduring a gruelling process where she eventually trumped six potential candidates, including Ms Fyffe’s son, Scott. Ms Fyffe, who will retire before the next election, said Bridget had endured a “very public and tough” pre-selection process, which included around 70 interviews with delegates.
Ms Vallence said she could not be more excited, having been involved with the Liberal Party for more than 20 years. Despite her family being Liberal Party supporters, she said it wasn’t so much the party’s sentiment but rather its leaders who had inspired her journey into political life. “As a high school student, I learnt about politics ... listened to the radio and watched the ‘7.30 Report’ and got interested,” she said. “When I was in my late teens, John Howard was Prime Minister and Jeff Kennett was Victorian Premier; I found those leaders to be strong and reform-

in the last 12 months in crime rates, by far in excess of the average across the state.” Born and bred in the country Victorian town of Romsey, Ms Vallence now resides in Wandin with her husband and two young sons. She said the Yarra Valley appealed to their desire for a country lifestyle, with a need to balance their work commitments. Ms Vallence has spent much of her working life as a procurement manager with Goodyear. Despite suggestions within the media a female candidate would be well received within State Liberal ranks,
Ms Vallence said there was no such agenda. “Our aspiration within the Liberal Party is to represent modern Victoria - we don’t have quotas, we like to represent men and women from diverse backgrounds, we’re about merit,” she said. “It was a tough couple of months leading in, but very enjoyable to get around to many delegates and listen to what matters with them.” Ms Vallence said she had known leader Matthew Guy for some time and that she was looking forward to working closely Ms Fyffe in the lead-up to the November 2018 election.

Losing the locks By Peter Douglas
12342935-EPJ11-17
Monbulk grandmother of 16, Frances Loke, is preparing to shave off her beloved long locks, all in the name of charity. In honour of her daughter’s sister-inlaw, Nicole Mhatre, Ms Loke will participate in a World’s Greatest Shave event, which will be held at midday on Saturday 18 March. The Hot Rods and Whitewalls salon in Monbulk will host the event, with the clippers set to be unleashed on Ms Loke, in front of what is sure to be a large crowd. Ms Loke said Nicole’s leukaemia diagnosis came so unexpectedly that she felt she needed to help. “We were only recently in India to see her get married to her husband, Akshay,” she said. “She was just so happy. “But when they returned from their honeymoon, Nicole didn’t feel well. “After blood tests, she found out she had leukaemia.” Ms Loke said it had come as a huge shock to Nicole and her family. “It turned all their plans for life upside down, such as having children and starting a family,” Ms Loke said. “I didn’t know what to do; I felt that I needed to do something. “I’ve got long hair, so I thought I’d shave my hair.” Ms Loke said Nicole, who was a nurse at Frankston hospital, and her husband had both needed great support, as they took on this challenge. She said places like the Leukaemia Foundation had been fantastic for many families. “They do so much more than just research,” she said. “They provide counselling and support to families who are going through this ordeal.”

Selbyfest this year will be ‘Going Bush’, which is the theme of the event that is now in its seventh year. To add to the already jampacked activities list, which regularly attracts more than a thousand festival-goers, renowned Indigenous dance group Djirri Djirri will be performing for the enthusiastic crowds. There will be plenty of ‘bushthemed’ fun, including a gumboot-throwing competition and community Indigenous bushfoods garden; along with lots of kids activities and an Acknowledgement of Country. Selbyfest will kick off on Saturday 18 March, from 11am to 6.30pm. Manager of Selby Community House, Tracy van Vloten, said the festival was fun for all ages. “We would like to take this opportunity to invite you to ex-

30,000 books on move By Peter Douglas Lilydale Library staff are set to move more than 30,000 books to the library’s exciting new location at the Box Hill TAFE Lakeside campus in Lilydale. The library will close at its Anderson Street location for two weeks from 31 March while books, computers and other equipment are transferred to the new site, where finishing touches are underway, in preparation for the new library’s opening on 18 April. In June last year, Yarra Ranges Council voted six to one to support the library’s relocation to the Jarlo Drive campus’s LA building. Cr Fiona McAllister was the only councillor in opposition, saying the location was not easily accessible and away from the main ‘activity’ centre of town. However, her fellow councillors said they needed to capitalise on a great opportunity. Yarra Ranges Mayor and Eastern Regional Libraries (ERL) Deputy Chair, Cr Noel Cliff, said the new Lilydale Library would better cater for a variety of different age groups and provide access to modern technology and multimedia spaces. “The new site offers a larger space that will enable us to provide a more vibrant, interactive and welcoming place for library users,” Cr Cliff said. “It will feature a large dedicat-

ERL Libraries Chief Executive Officer, Joseph Cullen, said planning was firmly in place to ensure a smooth transition into the new site. “We are doing all we can to ensure the move takes place over
a short two-week period,” Mr Cullen said. “In the meantime, residents are encouraged to visit our ERL branches at Mooroolbark and Mount Evelyn.” The new Lilydale Library will

Real lack of information By Peter Douglas Upper Ferntree Gully’s Visitor Information Centre is one of two in the region set to close its doors, after Yarra Ranges Tourism announced the decision on Wednesday 8 March. Following a detailed review of the ongoing viability of the centres, Yarra Ranges Tourism Chief Executive Officer, Simon O’Callaghan, said a significant decline in the number of visitor inquiries had driven the decision to cease operations at Upper Ferntree Gully and Healesville. Ultimately, the growth in online booking channels has weighed heavily in the role of the tourism model, with websites such as Airbnb.com.au and Booking.com dominating the market. Yarra Ranges Tourism CEO, Simon O’Callaghan, said tourists were increasingly likely to use
such sites to access information and accommodation booking for tourism operators. Local tourism operator Ralph Henderson of Yarra Gables Motel, a director on the Yarra Ranges Tourism board, said he had seen first-hand the impact large online travel agents were having on tourism in the region. “60 per cent of our bookings now come through online channels,” Mr Henderson said. “The visitor appetite for wellserviced online information is simply a reality that the tourism industry and its operators have to embrace to remain in business.” Mr O’Callaghan said the Yarra Ranges Tourism’s visitor websites - www.visityarravalley.com. au and www.visitdandenongranges.com.au now receive more than 206 million annual page visits, which has seen growth of 89 per cent in the past 12 months.
“We are also able to reach more than 2.3 million visitors annually through our social media channels,” he said. The study also showed the centres were becoming increasingly costly to run and no longer represented a sustainable use of the government and industry funding. He said the centres in Healesville and Upper Ferntree Gully had seen a steady decline over the past few years, in both inbound calls and walk-in visitors. “The two centres combined received inquiries from less than 0.01 per cent of the six million visitors that come to our region each year,” he said. “In 2016, around 23,400 tourists visited the centres, down 33 per cent from three years ago.” Mr O’Callaghan said Yarra Ranges Tourism was keen to sup-

Gun range in the park On Thursday 6 October last year, a makeshift shooting range was set up in the Dandenong Ranges National Park, Olinda. The shooting range was set up beside a popular walking track, with those involved shooting at the various targets over a threehour period. Olinda police sergeant Andrew Heardmen said the shooting range was positioned off Silvan Road in the vicinity of the RJ Hamer Arboretum, near the intersection of Boundary Road and Simons Avenue, Olinda. “The location was in the vicinity of Simons Avenue and Boundary Road and near the popular RJ Hamer Arboretum,” he said. Three men are shown in photos posted online on Eyewatch - Yarra Ranges Police Service. The photos show a long firearm being used, a slab of Heineken beers on the ground and a man brandishing a short axe. Sgt Hearmen is urging any witnesses to come forward with any information that could assist them. He says that police have been working with Parks Victoria and have been conducting regular patrols to monitor the area. “While we can’t say it’s regular, Parks Victoria and police have been regularly patrolling and monitoring the area since the incident,” he said. If you know about or have any information about the incident, please contact Olinda Police on (03) 9751 1241 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Paediatric Naturopath – Healesville
Today, I’d like to talk to you about Sick Building Syndrome (SBS). A condition whereby your home or work environment is a significant cause of poor health. Fatigue, headache, insomnia, recurrent colds and allergy are just some of the symptoms caused by SBS. Your health could be adversely affected by things like poor air quality, off gassing plastics, mould, electromagnetic radiation and environmental carcinogens like pesticides. It can explain why some people fail to respond to indicated treatments. Do you wake up feeling tired no matter how much sleep you’ve had? Or perhaps your existing symptoms got worse after moving into a new home or began, after you relocated? Perhaps your symptoms resolve when you go away on holidays or leave the office? If this rings a bell, it’s likely you’re experiencing SBS. Here are some points to help you figure out if your home or work building is a problem. The age of your house: Pre-1970s, lead paints were used extensively and organochlorine pesticides were prevalent in soils. Asbestos use between 1945 and 1985. New homes suffer poor air quality from off-gassing volatile organic com-
pounds found in glues and particle boards. Old carpets: Harbour dust, mites, moulds and chemical residues which play havoc on allergy and asthma sufferers. Water exposure: Pooling, underground sources and leaks will produce mould - some of which is invisible. Mould is highly toxic to your respiratory system and will result in ongoing mucous production. It’s a cause of poor immunity and asthma-like illness. Lack of sunlight: Fails to kill light-sensitive microbes and results in low vitamin D impeding immune function. Electro-magnetic radiation: Microwaves, mobile phones, smart meters are listed as probable carcinogens. Toxic exposure: Cleaning products, plastics, pesticides and insect sprays. It’s quite comprehensive but there are things you can do to make a difference. Test your soil - you don’t want to grow vegies or let your children play in tainted soil. Remove clutter from under beds, desks, cars and clean out the fridge. Replace old carpet and window coverings and use natural-based cleaning products. Fix water leaks and address the cause of mould. Use indoor plants to freshen the air and open windows. Switch your mobile to flight mode and turn off the modem at night. Move any beds next to smart meters. These tips should get you started on a more healthy home. Touch base with us on Facebook, if you’d like more help. - Eluvi Natural Healthcare.

Swim from the heart
Crossing in safety
Selby marathon swimmer Paul Hoffman plans to swim the equivalent of two English Channels to help provide life-saving heart treatment for a young person from East Timor. Paul’s epic 60-kilometre solo swim will take up to 25 hours, starting from Eastern Beach in Geelong and finishing at Brighton Baths. Paul is aiming to raise $10,000 around 50 per cent of the cost of heart surgery for a patient. A volunteer with East Timor Hearts Fund, Paul said seeing the medical charity transform the lives of young patients inspired him to take on the marathon swim. “Some of these patients are not much older than my own kids, and quite often all they need is a fairly simple heart procedure so that they can get on with their lives and fulfil their aspirations,” he said. “I’m lucky enough to have great health, and I’m happy there is something I can do to give others a second chance at a healthy life as well.” This will be only the second time anyone has swum from Geelong to Melbourne, and is Paul’s second attempt at the bay crossing. During last year’s try, Paul tore a bicep tendon around five hours in. He gamely swam on for an hour, using only one arm, before conceding defeat - but vowing to return. After an operation, six months of physiotherapy and six months of training, during which he has swum up to 40km a week in the pool and ocean, Paul said he was looking forward to success. “This time it’s very personal,” he said. “This is unfinished business for me. “I don’t like leaving things unaccomplished.”
School principals, parents and teachers will be called on to help shape the future of Yarra Ranges’ school crossings, with the program undergoing its first review in three decades. Yarra Ranges Council has contacted school crossing supervisors, school communities and Victorian Government bodies to comment on a comprehensive review of council’s school crossing supervisor program being undertaken over the coming months. Council last year supported a recommendation to review the program in 2017, acknowledging that the council was committed to providing a service that focused on the safety of children in the community. Yarra Ranges Council’s executive officer for emergency management and community safety, Corrine Bowen, said that although council had run the program for more than 30 years, it had never been reviewed. “The school crossing program has experienced significant changes in pedestrian usage, the enhancement of road infrastructure standards, issues with attracting and retaining crossing supervisors and staffing isolated crossings. The review is to determine how the program can meet the future needs of the Yarra Ranges community,” Ms Bowen said. An independent consultant will be undertaking the review. Principals, school councils, parents and parents' associations are invited to make written submissions about the review, with comments and ideas for the program. Submissions must be received by 5pm, Friday, 24 March, and should include the subject line ‘School Crossing Supervisors Program Review’ and be emailed to scsreview@yarraranges.vic. gov.au.

They’re all in train-ing History could be made and records broken at this year’s Great Train Race as Echuca resident, Tarli Bird, goes for her third consecutive win in the 13.5-kilometre run. If successful, this feat will be unprecedented in the event’s 36-year history. Registrations are now open for the 2017 Great Train Race, which Bird won in the women’s division in 2015 and last year. Bird said that while she was aware of the record, she was more concerned about trying to beat the train and her times from previous years. “I really enjoy trying to beat the train at each of the four crossings and the adrenaline this brings when you can hear the train in the distance,” she said. “It’s a challenging run and provides a great sense of accomplishment when you finish. “I always feel better once I am over the two-kilometre hill, which never gets easier or shorter each year. “The event allows you to enjoy the Dandenong Ranges in a unique way by giving you the opportunity to run on roads that are usually unavailable to runners due to traffic. “I am training well and confident that I can run a similar time to previous years.” Puffing Billy Railway Special Events Manager, Matt Collopy, said part of the Great Train Race’s popularity stemmed from the unique challenges it presented for runners. “Despite the race being relatively short in distance, the three-hill climbs in the first 10 kilometres certainly tests the runners, with the final 3-4 kilometres being run at a fast pace on a soft, downhill trail,” he said. “Hearing Puffing Billy’s whistle but never knowing if you are ahead or
Letters Some rescue Victoria’s training system has endured a revolving door of ministers under Daniel Andrews’ chaotic command - and the damage bill is adding up. In just 12 months, the Andrews Government ripped $165.3 million from training and cut staff numbers by 6.5 per cent in just 12 months. Daniel Andrews’ claims of a TAFE ‘rescue’ are an absolute farce; it’s Victorian students who are paying the price. Christine Fyffe, Member for Evelyn.
The revolution
Driver Gavin Clark will be aiming to make it tough for the enthusiastic runners. 165821 behind the train creates anticipation and excitement among the runners, as they traverse the varying landscape of bush terrain, sealed and dirt roads. “The race is not for the faint-hearted, so I encourage all participants to train accordingly in the lead-up to race day.” The Great Train Race is one of the oldest and most popular events on
the Australian running calendar, and the 2017 event is expected to attract 3200 participants, from competitive runners to those who simply want to challenge themselves in a unique landscape. The Great Train Race is organised by Puffing Billy Preservation Society volunteers, with all proceeds - and any additional donations - going towards
the Puffing Billy Menzies Creek Museum Redevelopment project. The event will be held on Sunday 30 April, with a 9.30am race start. The start is located at Bayview Road, Belgrave, with the finish line at Emerald Lake Park, Emerald. Register online at www.greattrainrace.com.au.
Reading your recent article - ‘A roof over kids’ heads’ - on James Merlino’s magnanimous gift of $285,000 to build a roof over the Ferny Creek Primary’s outdoor netball court (‘Mail’, 7 March), I was struck by the interesting priorities he and (principal) Matthew Coyle appear to have for the school. My most recent meeting with Matthew was to discuss the large class my son is in as he starts his primary school education at Ferny Creek Primary. At that meeting, Matthew expressed regret at the lack of funding he had received to pay for an extra teacher to allow for two prep classes. I was informed there was a funding shortfall of around $60,000 and thus the class size was stuck at 28 students, instead of there being the usual two smaller classes. You can imagine the bemusement of the parents with children in this large prep class as they read that the pauper principal and the miserly minister had managed to pull a financial rabbit out of the hat. Between the two of them, they have produced a sum almost five times what was required for an extra teacher for a roof over the outdoor netball court. It’s ‘a coup’ alright, but it does make you wonder how the students and their education benefit from such a revolutionary budget process. Tim Baird, Ferny Creek

The market has been going for almost three years and features products from artisans that, as the name suggests, are either handmade, home business, home grown or baked. They have a diverse number of stalls and the number grows with every market. The market has a great variety of stalls and a wonderful market atmosphere. They are a family friendly
market and also welcome dogs on leads. The market is a project of the Emerald Lions Club, with all proceeds being returned back to the community through various groups. Recently, they donated $20,000 to the Emerald SES to go towards to their new truck. They also purchased three defibrillators for the Emerald township and co-purchased one for the Cockatoo township. They have also helped out NILS by covering the costs of printing their current brochure. Head on up to Emerald for

School in limelight On 9 February 1937, the Upwey Higher Elementary School opened its doors for the first time for students in the Outer East and Dandenong Ranges. By 1945, the newly re-named Upwey High School had developed into a school with a strong sense of local community and a reputation for the delivery of a well-rounded education for the young people in the community. While the goals and career plans of students at Upwey High School in the 1940s and 1950s might differ from the aspirations of students of the 21st century, one thing has never changed - the commitment to providing programs to build students to achieve at their personal best. That tradition forged over the past 80 years continues today, with students having access to a wide range of programs designed to support talents, passions and interests and support a pathways approach to encourage students to be active responsible citizens and reflect the school values of tolerance, respect and integrity. To celebrate 80 years of Upwey High School, two main events are being planned. ‘Reminiscence’, a musical concert to be held at Burrinja on Friday 24 March, sees both past
and present students, as well as staff, perform past school musical numbers and covers and originals. Secondly, to coincide with the school’s annual Open Day, the 80th Anniversary Open Day will take place on Saturday 25 March from 11am to 4pm at the school. All past and present students from the past 80 years are invited. For some ex-Upwey students, the reunions have already begun. Two of the Upwey ‘Originals’, students from the first day in 1937, have already held a reunion. Upon hearing of the 80th anniversary, Stephen Gooch, aged 94, contacted the school. After serving in World War II, he moved to Queensland where he still resides. At the same time, 91-year-old Ray Parker contacted the school. Ray had moved to Queensland as a commercial pilot and still resides there. Both were keen to attend, but unable to. The school put them in touch, and 80 years later, they met up and reminisced about old times. The school looks forward to hosting its two events where old friends can catch up and see their old school.

UPWEY IGA/CFA PRESENTATION
IGA is stocked and ready to go The IGA Supermarket in Upwey, under the guidance of new store manager Steve McManamon, recently held a sausage sizzle outside the store. All proceeds went to the Upwey CFA Brigade. A total of $650 was raised on the day, with the supermarket looking to continue working with the local Upwey community. Steve said this was their way of giving back to the community. “It’s a great honour to be able to join forces with the team at Upwey CFA to raise much-needed funds for the brigade,” he said. The team at Upwey IGA offers an extensive range of fresh foods, including deli meat, and fresh fruit and vegetables. Their deli range also has fresh ‘in house’ made salads and they always have hot, freshly cooked barbecue chickens, stocked for family dinners. Their meat department is second to none, stocking quality produce sourced from local producers, with their beef coming from prime Victorian producers. You won’t be disappointed! They also now offer Swap ‘n’ Go bottles, so you will never be without gas for your barbecue for those family gatherings. So - with a great community spirit, friendly staff and quality produce on-hand - check out IGA Upwey. IGA Upwey is located at 62-64 Main Street, Upwey.

Logan is a near-perfect swansong for Hugh Jackman’s iconic portrayal of the Wolverine/ Logan character. Logan follows an old, weary Logan (Jackman) who is entrusted with the protection of Laura (Dafne Keen), a young girl with his same mutant powers. The film maintains tense forward momentum, with Logan and his friends evading a ruthless biotech company hunting Laura, but the film is primarily a sombre, even heartbreaking character drama. A major theme of Logan is family, with Logan taking care of the senile Professor X (Patrick Stewart) and begrudgingly bonding with Laura. It is deeply poignant to watch Logan take on these responsibilities while rejecting the life they could give him, as he believes he does not deserve happiness. The action is all the more powerful for its relative sparseness, its graphic brutality - full of bloody dismemberments and decapitations - and the inherent suspense of Logan’s failing condition. As Logan’s healing factor is slowly degrading with age, every fight becomes a pitched, bloody struggle, and Jackman delivers an exemplary performance as a near-immortal man finally confronting, with both fear and relief, his own mortality. Stewart provides cantankerous levity as Professor X, and newcomer Keen conveys remarkable confidence and maturity while being a fierce dynamo in the action scenes. A gory, meditative character drama was a risky move for the X-Men franchise, but it paid off in spades.

After a scare the event wouldn’t see its 60th anniversary last year, the Kalorama Car Rally is back better than ever in 2017. The fund-raising event for the Kalorama CFA is enormously popular, both with car enthusiasts and communities within the hills. With a huge array of vintage vehicles driving in from near and far, it’s not hard to see why the event has a huge following. In fact, it’s one of Melbourne’s pioneering motoring events, running since 1956. But just last year, event organisers were shocked as Yarra Ranges Council advised the 2016 event could no longer take place at the Kalorama Memorial Reserve. They were also informed the event could no longer be held due to concerns around the impact the rally was having on the oval’s surface. Though this was quickly reversed, with then mayor Jason Callanan quickly allaying community concern. “I am proud that the council can continue to support this long-running community event, which has been with us for 60 years,” Cr Callanan said. “I now hope the community and organising committee are reassured that the event will remain at Kalorama oval for years to come.”

Beyer sets up a win By Ian Harley FTGDCA A century to Upper Ferntree Gully’s Daniel Beyer has sent the Kings into another Reeves Shield grand final, with a rematch of the semi-final against Knoxfield next weekend at Carrington Park. Beyer (116) anchored the innings with Jay Colee (35) to win in emphatic style by seven wickets and 20 overs to spare. Beyer hit four sixes, including one to bring up his century, and 13 boundaries after going in with the score on 1/7. On day one, Eildon Park fought back to reach 202, having struggled to 7/99, courtesy of opening bowler Todd Burley grabbing three wickets in nine balls, while the unflappable Shane Cosstick was trying to hold the innings together. When the Panthers lost their seventh wicket, the thought of batting on day one would have entered the head of Kings skipper Peter Dunlop, however, Cosstick was joined by Steve Pimm. He batted with intent and attacked the bowling. When Cosstick fell to a return catch to Collard for 52, the pair added 67 for the seventh wicket and the batting side had 200 in their sights. Tailender Andrew Brown added 13 valuable runs with Pimm, who was dismissed by Burley for 60 which included three sixes and four boundaries. Then Burley claimed the last wicket
in the 74th over, the Panthers at least had a target to defend. Burley was sensational taking 6/58 from 25 overs, but it was Beyer’s innings that set the Kings for a grand final appearance. Johnson Park will take on Lysterfield at Lakesfield Reserve for the DeCoite Shield after an emphatic victory over Footballers. The Griffins were bowled out before tea as Tom Nash took 5/47 for the Sharks and Liyan DeSilva chimed in with 3/32. Jacob Patterson (19) and Tharanga Lakshita (19) put on the biggest partnership 33 for the seventh wicket, but the steady fall of wickets saw Footballers' season come to an end with the score on 112. On day one, Johnson Park (235) put their noses to the grindstone and batted the full day. Middle-order batsman David Devenish top scored for the Sharks with 86 while Ben Stallworthy, coming off a century in last week’s semi-final, worked hard for his 39. The brilliant Tharanga Lakshita dominated with the ball, taking 6/68. PRELIMINARY FINALS Reeves Shield Upper Gully 3/206 (Beyer 116*, Colee 35*) d Eildon Park 202 (Pimm 60, Cosstick 62, Burley 6/58). Utting stars in the Hawks’ premiership triumph MONBULK CRICKET An exciting four days of cricket at Monbulk with four junior semi-finals and the fourths grand final being played. The Monbulk 4th XI became premiers after a great team effort with the ball, before a 118-run partnership between Paul Utting and Josh Rak saw the Hawks home. Paul finished up on a magnificent 96 not out. This team consisted of four of the club’s Under 16s and five other recent Monbulk junior players and is another example of the club’s bright future. Congratulations to skipper Tim Fogarty and all the players on a well-deserved win over Upwey-Tecoma in front of a large Monbulk crowd. The four junior semi-finals were all tight contests, played with great spirit and exciting for the players and spectators. The Monbulk Under 12s won and now move into a home grand final this Thursday and Friday night. Good luck to everyone. Scores: 4ths grand final - Monbulk 2/183 (P. Utting 96*, J. Rak 36*, A. Mount Evelyn to face off By Chris Anderson YVCA All-but one of the semi-finals in the Yarra Valley Cricket Association have been run and won, with the action across the weekend befitting of finals. In DJ Strachan Shield action, Warburton-Millgrove and Mount Evelyn maintained their status as the best two sides in the competition as they both booked their places in next weekend’s grand final. Mount Evelyn’s task against Woori Yallock was in complete contrast to that of the semi-finals. The Mounters started day one in a flurry with the bat, as their top order led by Daniel Giblin (57) and Kane Jones (56) blasted their way to a blistering start. The Woori boys kept to their task, and with quick wickets before the tea interval, they negated the home team’s attacking flair. Simon Young (5/77) and Zac Staggard (4/19) then proceeded to wipe through a lacklustre Mount Evelyn tail to restrict the damage to 196. The Woori Yallock openers of Paul Broussard and Mick Dwyer then patiently navigated the visitors to 0/46 to take day one honours. The war of attrition continued on day two as neither the Woori Yallock openers, or their Mount Evelyn counterparts gave an inch. When the deadlock was finally broken, with the score on 54, a staggering 43 overs had passed, highlighting the struggle between bat and ball. Dwyer and captain Ryan Smith continued the resistance.
Brad Jones of Mount Evelyn launched the ball into the hands of Paul Broussard. 165967
Star batsman Kane Jones finds the fence. 165967 into the second session of play, the game looked set for a thrilling finish. A disastrous run-out of Smith, when runs had started to flow from the captain’s bat, proved to be a fatal blow. Murphy continued to attack. While he was at the wicket, the Tigers still held hope of victory; but with wickets falling around him, and his stroke-play falling short, the innings was wrapped up for 141.
But with the score continuing to stagnate, the wicket of Dwyer opened the door for the Mounters to capitalise in the shadows of the tea interval. Three quick wickets followed as the Tigers’ resistance started to falter with the score at 5/84. The experience of Smith and Troy Murphy then combined. With them able to navigate their team through the tea interval, and well
Priding themselves on their fielding, the pick of the plays for the Mounters was their two run-outs at crucial points in the day’s play, as their bowlers toiled manfully across more than 90 overs. Gareth Fraser (3/29) took out the bowling honours, but extended spells from Kane Jones 2/24 off a remarkable 30 overs (including 18 maidens) and Chris Anderson 2/45 off 23 overs kept things in check early.
So this leaves us with a tantalising grand final match-up between the competition’s best performed teams this season, Warburton-Millgrove and Mount Evelyn. Both teams fought out an exciting Round 14 clash just a week ago. Despite Mount Evelyn taking the honours, the minor premiers gained plenty out of the one day fixture. Both teams are capable of big scores with the bat, and with plenty of strokemakers this bodes well for an exciting brand of cricket across the two days. DJ Strachan Shield Warburton-Millgrove 8/315 (David Lever 84, B. Lever 71, M. Walker 65) d Yarra Junction 86 (M. Walker 4/29, David Lever 3/40, Daniel Lever 2/9); Mount Evelyn 196 (D. Giblin 57, K. Jones 56, B. Jones 31, G. Fraser 24, S. Young 5/77, Z. Staggard 4/19) d Woori Yallock 141 (R. Smith 32, T. Murphy 30, P. Broussard 29, M. Dwyer 23, G. Fraser 3/29, K. Jones 2/24, C. Anderson 2/45).

Eyes on $100,000 target By Kath Gannaway
Each year this event raises thousands of dollars for local causes and charities with last year’s proceeds going to purchase a vital signs monitor for Lilydale Day Oncology, and to support Bridge Builders, Badger Creek Men’s Shed and Monbulk CFA. Over the years the show has also supported Healesville Hospital and Healesville Scouts, among other groups. Gates open at 8am for entrants with a fee of $15 for show cars and bikes. The public is welcome from 10am with $5 entry, children under 16 free. Visit www.facebook.com/ mountaindistrictcarandbikeshow for updates.

The Mountain District Car and Bike Show will move into its second decade with a spectacular show planned for Sunday, 19 March. Pegasus Rod and Custom Club has come on board this year, teaming up with founders and long-time organisers of the event, Jacqueline and Greg Sheppard, to ensure the 11th show will not only be a spectacular day for exhibitors and visitors, but will see the $100,000 target busted. Their 10th show last year raised $14,000, just $1000 short of the $100,000 target for funds raised over the decade.
The Healesville Sporting Complex in Don Road will once again transform into a sea of colour and chrome as hundreds of cars and bikes file onto the lakeside oval. The show has become a popular event not only with car and bike enthusiasts, but for local and visiting families who come down to look over the fantastic display of hot rods, classic, custom and vintage cars and bikes, and to enjoy the live music and grab a bite to eat. One major change this year is that there will be no pre-registration of vehicles - just rock up at the gate and pay your money to be eligible for some great trophies and prizes.
