MORE TO LOVE I started this working week with the sad news of Kay Fielden’s passing. Kay has been a long-time letter writer to Noosa Today and while we haven’t always agreed on some issues, I have always been inspired by her tenacity and energy. Kay has always fought for what she believes in with an energy and vigour that is simply impressive. Many readers would remember, for example, her tenacious letter-writing campaign in relation to the flyingfoxes, and their impact on residents. Her determination to fight for her beliefs despite the nay-sayers is a lesson we can all share and something I will forever carry with me. You can read our tribute to Kay on page 11. To our letter writers, your views, opinions and thoughts will always be valued by us here at Noosa Today, and will always be a vital - and lively - part of what we do. And I hope you will be inspired to forever put pen to paper in the name of standing up for what you think is right, and saying no to bullies. ● Jolene Ogle

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT… CARE FUNDS FOLLOW THOSE IN NEED
CLAMPDOWN ON FORESHORE SPREAD Tourism and hire operators along the Noosa River foreshore who have spread out past their lease area have been given their last warning and the council is expected to approve plans for joint compliance action. A report to the Services and Organisation Committee on 7 March outlined how compliance officers from the Department of Natural Resources Mining (DNRM) and the council audited eight leases along Gympie Terrace in December 2016 and found a number of encroachments such as tables, chairs and signs on community land. The compliance officers also found a number of unapproved structures, plus expansions and changes to businesses, such as the addition of coffee shops, to be in breach of the Noosa Planning Scheme. At the general committee meeting on Monday 13 March, councillors voted to authorise council CEO Brett de Chastel to write to the DNRM to confirm its support for compliance action. Councillors also agreed with plans to write to the commercial lease holders and advise them to cease their encroachments as well as develop a Memorandum of Understanding with the DNRM to establish a regular compliance program.
A report outlining the breaches was presented to the council and councillor Brian Stockwell said he was “flabbergasted with the growth of encroachments” since the offending lease holders were first warned of their breaches in January 2016 and again in July 2016. “What do we call a person who settles on land or occupies property without right or the payment of rent? What I just read out is the definition of a squatter,” he said. Cr Stockwell said the motion before the council was about removing squatters from parklands and while he didn’t doubt that the council would be accused of being “anti-business”, he strongly believed “every square metre” of the river foreshore is valuable to the community. The operators had been warned in 2016 to move their furniture and signs back within their lease area but Councillor Joe Jurisevic said the operators seem to have “thumbed their noses” at the council and have ignored the request. Council local law officers already have the power to remove offending objects from community land. The motion was carried by the councillors and is expected to be ratified at the 16 March ordinary meeting. ●
TRAFFIC SOLUTIONS IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Is it time to get on the bus? The council has released the draft transport strategy for community consultation. Active Travel to School program for school kids, trialling a temporary parkand-ride service during peak holiday periods and trialling a shuttle bus that would form a loop and service key destinations such as the marina and Hastings Street. The draft plan also suggested investigating the introduction of a
congestion fee for the Hastings Street precinct and investigating a priority lane on Noosa Parade for sustainable transport modes. The most controversial proposed strategy is the introduction of paid parking in congested areas such as Hastings Street. Councillors discussed the proposed draft transport strategy at Monday’s general committee meeting where councillor Ingrid Jackson raised concerns over the second principle that states the policy will prioritise the transport needs of residents and overnight visitors over the needs of day visitors. Residents can share their thoughts on the proposed strategy online through the council’s Your Say portal at www. yoursay.noosa.gov.au, through email mail@noosa.qld.gov.au, phone 5329 6501 or mail submissions to PO Box 141, Tewantin, 4565. ●

After more than 1000 submissions, extensive consultation with the community and pop-up stalls, Noosa Council has released its draft transport strategy with six proposed solutions to Noosa’s traffic woes. In his introduction to the report that was presented to the General Committee on Monday 13 March, Mayor Tony Wellington said there is no silver bullet when it comes to solving Noosa’s traffic congestion issues and the solution needs to be a multi-faceted approach. “This is a highly complex issue that can only be resolved with significant foresight, a dash of courage, grasp of the complexities of behaviour change, all tempered with realistic pragmatism and financial sense,” he said. The draft strategy outlines six proposed solutions to Noosa’s traffic woes that could be rolled out over the next one to two years. The strategies include introducing an
This month marks the start of the Government changes to the way aged care services are delivered and with Noosa’s aging population and hundreds of residents are expected to be impacted. The major change to the aged-care industry will see home care package funding following the consumer. This means package recipients can now choose and direct home care package funding to the service provider that best meets their needs. One of Noosa’s main aged-care providers is Noosa Community Support (NCS). NCS service delivery team leader Angela Kraushaar said NCS offers older and frail people, those with dementia, and their carers, a personalised service. “Our services enhance independence and enable people to remain living within the community by taking a wellness approach to care, building people’s confidence and enabling active ageing,” she said. NCS offers a purpose-built centre in Noosaville’s Wallace Park, providing social interaction and therapeutic programs for clients and some welldeserved respite for their carers. Ms Kraushaar has worked at NCS for more than 10 years and said she is passionate and proud of the services and support that staff provide to clients. For more information on any of the above or to simply talk to someone about care requirements, contact NCS on 5329 6175, visit www. noosacommunitysupport.com.au or visit www.myagedcare.gov.au for more information on the changes to the agedcare system. ●

COVER STORY
MONTY’S
MODEL
AGENDA BY HOLLIE HARRIS
M
onty Thomas is the epitome of hard work. This determination of this 26-year-old Noosa hairdresser is contagious and it’s difficult not to get wrapped up in the excitement of his grand plans. Talking with Monty about the difficult journey he has faced throughout his life, it becomes clear that he is wise far beyond his years and his goals are not fuelled by ego, but a grounded calling to inspire people to really love themselves. “I’ve had to overcome a lot of struggles and the road is still rough. Like many people, I have experience loss, heartbreak and health issues,” Monty said. “But my struggles will lead me to greatness.” Growing up near Imbil, Monty began dancing from the age of four and continued throughout his childhood, eventually becoming qualified as a professional dancer. “Being so individual in a Queensland coastal town has been hard. I have been bullied and shamed emotionally and physically. I suffer a lot of posttraumatic stress from the trauma. Monty continued to burn through those difficult years to become a self-taught costume designer, a make-up artist and then later, he took a very long and rocky road to becoming a qualified hairdresser. These days, he is styling for award-winning salon Surrender Dorothy. Monty’s broad range of talents have slowly begun to merge together, nudging his already impressive career into a direction of something even bigger. Combining all his skills, he began moving into the art of drag. Under the stage name of Jess Whoo, Monty has honed the art for nine years now. Throughout these years, the young and gentle
Monty’s dream is to share his story far and wide hoping to inspire others to see that it is possible to go through huge struggles and come out the other side shining.
natured stylist established himself as a performer, an artist and as a figure who stands against gender and societal norms. “I have held my own and carried on, putting eight years into my art to define myself, heal the pain of my past and really sculpt something that truly amplifies a positive and important message to others who have been through similar. “Although the road has been tough, I wouldn’t change my experiences because it’s grounded and matured me and led me to this amazing chance at something really new and exciting,” he said. Last year, Monty’s work in front of the camera lead him to the Sunshine Coast Fashion Festival runway where he was to model menswear. Always pushing to create awareness of human diversity, Monty did something no one in Queensland had done before - he walked the runway in ladies wear. “I couldn’t believe it hadn’t been done before and felt quite sad about that fact. I am extremely proud of this achievement and excited to be a part of the movement where drag artists can be taken seriously in the fashion industry. “I want Australian fashion to push boundaries and represent the true colours and quirks of our people and shed the boxes and norms we seem to be confined by.” Pushing the stereotype of “drag” out the door, he has created his own muse in the form of “Jess Whoo”. Throughout Jess’s eight-year career he has performed with numerous drag acts and celebrities, modelled for esteemed photographers and designers, and acted in Australian national commercials. Jess’s constant urge to push boundaries, open doors for the art of drag and raise awareness on gender and sexuality issues has him pegged to become one of Australia’s leading drag superstars.

Monty becomes Australia’s first drag runway model. Picture: Sunshine Coast Fashion Festival and Fletcher Photography The ego so often associated with a successful drag artist seems far away from Monty’s softly spoken demeanor. He avoids drama and has a level head about business, taking his career very seriously. “I want to break the stigma behind homosexuality and drag. What I am trying to do doing SO important. “Australia is very diverse. It is such an amazing country and we seem to silence that. “It’s important to the 12-year-old me who needed to see someone else get through all the crap and truly be 100 per cent authentic. “It’s important for anyone who doesn’t understand (about diversity) to become educated and it’s important to let people know its OK to be yourself, no matter the content,” Monty said. Monty is currently working with numerous photographers, designers, makeup artists and publications to build a strong portfolio of work and take active steps to achieve his goal in becoming a pioneer of diversity in Australia

I WANT TO BREAK THE STIGMA BEHIND HOMOSEXUALITY AND DRAG. WHAT I AM TRYING TO DO DOING SO IMPORTANT… “I feel extremely blessed and humbled by the support of my friends and family who’ve gotten me this far. However, I need help to reach my goals. “The intention is to help me kickstart a career in Melbourne. The money will support my move and settling interstate. I’ll be able to support myself once I’m settled,” he said. If there was ever a horse to back, Monty is that hard-working horse. Or more of a Pheonix perhaps - rising up from the ashes to spread its brilliantly coloured wings and fly. “The biggest drive for me is making a little dent of difference and of course being able to do what I love for a living. “I never lost that fire within me to continue to be happy and unique. It’s vital that people hear stories like mine so they don’t give up. The privilege of a lifetime is being who you are.” Watch this face. ●
12342682-11-17
Focused on breaking down the walls of gender roles and inspiring people, Monty is unapologetically himself and hopes to inspire people to do the same. For such a young man, Monty has a work ethic from another era. His determination and positivity is inspiring to say the least and the self-marketing strategies he creates are quite genius. Taking on the role of his own PR and marketing rep may just be his most successful career move yet, as he is now booked out a month ahead. “I have set a business plan, five-year goals and intend to see this through. I am passionate and focused on making this work,” he said. Recently launching his gofundme page (www.gofundme.com - Monty Thomas) to bring his dream closer, Monty is keeping the pressure on the momentum, feeling that time is of the essence and that Australia really needs this.

NEWS MASTER PLAN FOR GARDENS Council is calling on the community to have their say on the Noosa Botanic Gardens’ new master plan. After 30 years and 70,000 visits annually, mayor Tony Wellington said council would love to have residents’ thoughts on the future and function of the Botanic Gardens. The plan will cover facilities and uses, as well as the overarching vision for the facility that was previously an unofficial dumping ground before being turned into the Botanic Gardens. The Gardens offer a variety of activities including scenic and guided walks, picnic and barbecue facilities and specialised garden areas. The public can also hire sections of the gardens as well as the amphitheatre. These have been used for many concerts, weddings and other events. Surveys are available online at https://yoursay. noosa.qld.gov.au or paper copies can be obtained from the Botanic Gardens, libraries and at council offices. A box will be available for collection at each location. The survey closes on 3 April 2017. ●

BUSHFIRE PLAN Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) will join key partner agencies in Peregian Springs this month to discuss bushfire preparation and prevention following the devastating fire that destroyed over 900 hectares on bushland earlier this year. Peregian Springs State School will host representatives from QFES, the Sunshine Coast Regional Council and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service at events organised by SEQ Fire and Biodiversity Consortium. The open forum will discuss bushfire management on the Sunshine Coast and steps locals can take to prepare themselves, families and properties for bushfires. QFES Superintendent James Haig said ongoing dry conditions and a combination of low soil moisture means the bushfire threat on the Sunshine Coast might continue well into March and beyond. “It is important Coolum and Peregian Springs residents are ready for this and know what to do, so they can act quickly if there is a bushfire,” he said. The bushfire community information event will be held at the Peregian Springs State School hall, 191 The Avenue, Peregian Springs, on 29 March at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. Everyone is welcome. ●

NEWS SCARE FOR PREP STUDENTS A Noosa resident has raised concerns for children walking to school alone after he spotted two young students walking along Beckman’s Road on Monday 13 March. The man said he was driving down Beckman’s Road about 10am when he saw two young girls aged about five walking together along the busy road. The girls were wearing Noosaville State School uniforms and told the man and his wife that they had left their classroom. The concerned resident said he was worried for the girls’ safety and phoned the school. Soon after the Noosaville State School deputy principal came to collect the two students and return them to the school. Noosa Today contacted Noosaville State School for comment, but without success. ●

DIGITAL HUB Councillors are expected to award the contract for the construction of the Peregian Beach digital hub at tonight’s (16 March) Ordinary Meeting. SUPER IDEA IS A WINNER A tech-savvy group of business owners from Noosa Junction have taken out first place at the BOQ Fin Tech Hackathon for their “Super” saving idea. Business owners from co-working space Junction 2 and Coding at the Beach went to the hackathon where they were given the task of coming up with a business that would solve the complexities of superannuation for millennials. The group originally wanted to attend the hackathon in Brisbane just as a “learning experience”, but their business idea Super Transparent won them first place, along with $5000 cash and a one-on-one with entrepreneur and investor on Channel 10’s Shark Tank, Steve Baxter. The group was given 48 hours to come up with the business idea and Junction 2 co-owner Gary
Swanepoel said Super Transparent seemed like the perfect solution. “Millennials are the first generation to go through their entire working life with super, but they don’t know where their super is being invested,” he said. “Super Transparent gives them control over their investments and helps them see where their super is going. It’s gives choice and there’s also a mobile app to encourage saving.” The business was created within 48 hours and more than $7 million of superannuation was pledged to the business that is now in the process of being formerly created. “Our win just shows Noosa is a perfectly fine place for young entrepreneurs to accomplish amazing things,” Gary said. ●

Rumours were flying on Tuesday morning about a huge catamaran owned by race car driver Tony Longhurst making its way along the Noosa River. KAY A CHAMPION FOR MANY CAUSES One of Noosa’s most prolific letter writers has sadly lost her battle with cancer. Kay Fielden passed away peacefully on 26 February. Kay is well-known in the community for her ardent campaign about the flying foxes in Wallace Park, but many do not know of the significant contribution Kay made to individuals, communities and services in Australia and the Asia Pacific region during her life. Councillor Ingrid Jackson has shared her thoughts on one of Noosa’s toughest residents. Kay was always a fighter, right through to the end after battling cancer for many years. One of the last things Kay did was to dictate the story of her life for publication as a small book for her grandchildren. Kay was born in Newcastle in 1945 just at the end of WWII. Soon after, her family moved to a sheep station in Armidale, a lovely lifestyle with swimming pool, tennis courts, lots of visitors and a pet lamb for little Kay. After six years, the family returned to Newcastle where Kay ended up in hospital with polio for six months. Her mother and father were not allowed to visit her. Once back home, Kay went to Merriweather Public School and then to Newcastle Girls High, a selective school. On completing school, Kay rebelled against her father’s university plans and instead accepted a scholarship to a Sydney Art School. She partied rather than studying and lost her scholarship, much to her parent’s chagrin, who then enrolled her in general nursing at Royal Newcastle Hospital. She grew to love nursing and won the ATNA Prize for Nursing for coming top in the state exams. It was there that she met her husband Peter, a muchloved and respected doctor. They married in 1967 and spent time working as a team
Kay Fielden (pictured in May 2016) led an ardent campaign against the flying fox population in Wallace Park. in Vietnam, Tonga and Darwin, caring for war victims and cyclone survivors. Peter continued his career at the Royal North Shore, famously inventing a cure for pump lung syndrome that allowed safe lung transplants. Between 1969 and 1974 they had three children Katherine, Belinda and Barton. Kay kept busy on school committees and even ran for election to local council. In 1971 Kay accepted a job as a journalist at the Telegraph where after training she became a crime reporter. Later Kay joined Peter on projects with the Flying Doctor service. Peter died suddenly of a heart attack in 1976 and, after the State Funeral, Kay’s and their children’s lives changed.
Kay was persuaded to study Law at Macquarie University which was family friendly. During her studies she helped establish the Macquarie Legal Centre, taking on cases for people in hardship, which eventually led to new credit card laws. Meanwhile, Kay got involved at Kuringai Chase Council, setting up a range of community services. Kay graduated with a BA in Anthropology, Politics and Sociology in 1983 and a Bachelor of Laws in 1985. Next came the College of Law. During this period Kay wrote a book: ‘Socialism vs Marxism’ and contributed to another book ‘The Baby Machine’. Kay’s first job as a lawyer was with the Government Insurance Office at the NSW Supreme Court. She then became a Worker’s Compensation Magistrate. Compassionate, she found for the worker in most cases. When her stint as Commissioner ended, she went to a small law practice on the NSW Central Coast and began to work in criminal law, before switching to aged-care law. Kay met partner Maggie in 1999 and they decided to travel around Australia. However when they reached Peregian, Kay discovered she had breast cancer and her 17year battle with cancer began. Maggie and Kay stayed in the Noosa Shire, where Kay remained interested in politics and wrote letters to the newspapers about a range of issues, such as stopping the upgraded Bruce Highway going through Pomona and trying to get rid of flying foxes at Wallace Park. Kay peppered her autobiography with good advice for her grandchildren, especially lauding the value of friendship and helping others. “My message to you is to contribute to your community as much as you can. And in whatever you do. There are always ways to help others and to bring about change,” she said. Vale Kay Fielden. ●

THREE … Tips for peaceful family travel
1
Eat in more often Restaurants can be stressful on holidays. Everyone has to agree where to go and get a reservation or wait for a table. Plus, if there are little kids, they’re tired.
2
Breathing space People who don’t normally spend 24 hours a day together are suddenly doing just that. Plan breaks every three or four hours. Find time to read a book or, even better, walk alone.
3
Take it slow The journey will be a lot slower than usual with kids. Parents should head into the holiday accepting that. Be realistic, say “this is what we’re going to be able to accomplish”.

OPINION
Post your letters to: 36 Mary St, Noosaville, 4566 or email: newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au
FACT-FREE ZONE John Smeed’s recent letter, challenging my information on renewables, was light on facts and heavy on generalisations. His accusation that I am spreading ‘propaganda’ smacks of projection - accusing others of what you yourself are doing. For the record, John Smeed was one of the climate deniers who invited Lord Monckton to address locals to deny climate change The science on this issue has long been in. We need to move on into a clean energy future. Scientists have alerted us to the problem and scientists will continue to make exciting breakthroughs in storage technology to ensure we can generate and use cheap, clean, reliable energy. Just as the blaming of renewables for the recent SA power blackouts has been shown to be totally false, so are the arguments presented by Mr Smeed. Within five years cheap electric cars will be universally available. The energy world is rapidly changing, and Australia is currently being held back by vested interests and unscientific thinking. Joy Ringrose, Pomona.
PRIDE OF IGNORANCE John Sneed (Noosa Today, 8 March), cofounder of the Galileo Movement, a small, group of GW deniers dedicated to stopping the Australian Government from imposing a carbon tax, seems proud, if not ignorant, that the objectives of his group stand firmly in the way of Australia meeting its Paris Agreement commitments, contribute to the slower uptake of renewable energies, assure that Australia will have the most expensive power production in the world within a decade, and avoid the well-established trend of solar power employing many more workers than the coal industry. In short: un-Australian. For example, the US Department of Energy reported that solar electricity generation (two per cent of all electricity generation) employs almost twice as many workers as all of the fossil fuel power generation combined. A similar situation exists in Australia. With solar panels and battery storage continuing to improve and drop in price, within 13 years it should be far less expensive for any establishment to generate and store their own solar power than to buy from the grid, without subsidies and no matter how centralised power is generated. It was intriguing to read Mr Sneed refer to “Green propaganda”, “distort facts”, “mislead innocent readers”, and “make stuff up” in reference to Joy Ringrose when, in fact, he is the master of these. An indication of the advance of renewable energy can be seen by the list of

ALL SORTS OF RORTS Once again we head down that well-beaten track towards another State Election. Our apathy towards these processes has grown as we become sick and tired of hearing about another ‘pollie rort’ and witness the parliamentary brawls where decision making for the betterment of the state or nation and its people has been replaced by voting for the preservation of the party and the politician themselves. Yes, there are bad apples in every barrel but this recurring nightmare of news about those caught with their noses in the trough of taxpayers’ money is out of control and the people have had enough. But, dare I say, this time it is different, voters believe that nothing has changed for a long time despite the promises and are now realising that nothing will change unless they vote differently. While we have seen Independents at the state and federal level for many years, the majority of voters have still been drawn to the two majors, the Liberal-National Party or Labor Party. Things have changed and I don’t believe that the majors can still argue that ‘voting for a minor party or Independent will not give you a voice’ - just look at the rise and rise of Xenophon, Hansen and to some extent the Greens. Independents or minor parties could hold the balance of power in both the state and federal arena for many years to come, as they do now. If what I hear around the traps is true then the disgruntled Noosa voters also believe they haven’t had a voice for a long time. Such issues as Beckmans Road, the Noosa River clean-up, the Noosa Civic expansion, the TAFE in Tewantin, Noosa Hospital, rural roads and bus services to schools and the new Sunshine Coast Hospital, to name a few are rolled out each election with plenty of promises made and have formed the platform that state political candidates have run on, but the postscript always seems to show nothing or very little action since each election.
Thursday, 16 March, 2017
We need an Independent in the true sense of the word. Someone that is aligned to no political party, major or minor. This will allow all voters to have a look and judge that candidate on their agenda and merits rather than just put a line through them because they are politically aligned. An Independent winning the seat of Noosa will more than likely be part of a small group that has the balance of power you only have to look at the deals done with Katter and Knuth after the last state election to realise that we could see the issues mentioned above become more of a priority when the horse trading begins. Finding that individual is the hard part. This may seem a very selfish dream for Noosa but hey, what’s the alternative? As Einstein is attributed to saying ‘a form of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result’. Brian Hayes, Noosa Heads.
FRYMEDEAD In response to the new Environmental Report, Gosh Fryemdead, Minister for Trees, Seas and Coal, says that climate will impact heavily on ‘lower income and most disadvantaged groups’. Penalty rates/welfare cuts, no wages growth, Centrelink round-ups, now climate. Mission accomplished? Margaret Wilkie, Peregian Beach.
KEEP IT COMING We would like to say what a lovely surprise it was to find your paper had been delivered to us at Rothbury Court, Peregian Springs. We have certainly missed the home delivery as it is the best of the free papers. Hopefully this was not an error and we can look forward to receiving it on a regular basis; much nicer than having to drive to Peregian for a copy. Val and John, Peregian Springs.
THE DEPLORABLES Our very own Member for Noosa, the “Honourable“ Glen Elmes is of the opinion that One Nation voters are a bunch of “discontented rejects” (Noosa Today, 2 March). Perhaps Mr Elmes took a liking to Hilary Clinton’s famous line: “You can put half of
Trump supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables.“ That worked real well for Ms Clinton, didn’t it? How worried must he be? Obviously public life has very much agreed with him. Where he is significantly and blindly mistaken in his insulting rant, is the fact that the “discontented rejects“ as he so arrogantly labelled people, are actually businesspeople, bank managers, doctors, manufacturing, farmers, jewellers, lawyers, police and ADF personnel, shop and factory workers, even politicians as well as retirees who have watched our current crop of politicians drain the very life out of state and country. These “deplorables“ are young, old and everything in between. I know many such people personally and we talk about the future this country faces and the refusal of mainstream politicians to listen to us. It goes without saying, the more I work my way down the list to the, what in his opinion are the “lower echelons“, I can be absolutely confident they too will be voting likewise. The more I undertake this unintentional poll among neighbours, colleagues, strangers on public transport or in doctors’ waiting rooms, family and friends, the more buoyed I am that the rot will cease and that pinhole of light at the end of the tunnel may just get bigger. When will mainstream pollies understand that the elite are voting for One Nation too, not just the bogans they imagine. Mr Elmes, do you want to know the only reason every single one has said they’ll vote One Nation? I’ll tell you anyway - it’s borders, nothing less, nothing more, and to keep the other parties honest. Sadly, that’s necessary, as we’ve seen plenty of times. You may not be able to stand Pauline Hanson but you will have to get used to her because perhaps you haven’t noticed - she has a lot of support and it’s growing rapidly, while the ALP and LNP are dwindling away. All you and your cronies do with your continued attacks on the voters of Australia is to push more followers her way. I suggest that Mr Elmes has let his fear and worry panic him into speaking in public in such an unwise and insulting manner. Or perhaps he just simply doesn’t know better. He should publicly apologise. We shall not forget. Martina Gaynor, Sunrise Beach.

NOOSA TODAY 17
SUNSHINE COAST GROWTH
SUNSHINE COAST IN HOT DEMAND THE Queensland housing market has shown moderate growth throughout 2016, with a final quarter that revealed strong results for houses in the southeast corner and a weaker result for units, according to the REIQ Queensland Market Monitor: December 2016 quarter report. According to the report, the Sunshine Coast local government area has taken first prize for market growth for the quarter and for the year. The market grew 4.8 per cent this quarter, to a median house price of $545,000 and a hefty 6.1 per cent for the year. Over the medium term, (five years), it is 20.7 per cent higher. The unit market has held its own in a climate of strong supply, and although it only grew 0.2 per cent, to a median price of $375,750 this quarter, it added a respectable 1.6 per cent for the year and is 10.3 per cent higher than it was five years ago. The Sunshine Coast’s glitter strip neighbour, the Gold Coast’s house market outperformed almost every region in Queensland over the past 12 months, with the annual median house price growing 5.8 per cent to $575,000. Only the Sunshine Coast outstripped this market for annual growth. The Gold Coast market also had a strong quarter, growing 2.6 per cent to reach a quarterly median of $590,000. The Gold Coast unit market bucked the state-wide trend of falling unit prices, adding one per cent over the

quarter and 5.5 per cent over the past 12 months. The continued massive infrastructure and construction programs have attracted workers and been a significant driver of population growth. The Brisbane LGA median house price grew 1.6 per cent this quarter, to a new high of $655,000. The annual median house price grew 4.1 per cent over the past 12 months and REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said the Brisbane residential house market
was a dependable performer. “This is the consistent, sustainable growth that the Brisbane house market has become known for and it is great that it’s such a solid performer,” she said. The unit market performed less well, falling four per cent this quarter, with supply issues finally gaining traction that many had forecast. However, over the past 12 months the unit market has only fallen 1.1 per cent and over the past five years the market is still in
positive territory, having grown 11.3 per cent. “These supply issues have, as expected, had a small impact on prices, however, we know that the market is an excellent self-regulator and developers are already scaling back projects scheduled for this year and 2018,” Ms Mercorella said. The strength of houses and the weaker performance of the unit market was a consistent theme throughout much of the state. ●

RBA RATES
THE Reserve Bank of Australia has left the historically low interest rates on hold, and CoreLogic’s Tim Lawless expects the decision to keep housing demand strong. At its meeting on 7 March, the Reserve Bank’s Board decided to leave the cash rate unchanged at 1.5 per cent. Mr Lawless said it was with little doubt one of the key topics of conversation at the board meeting was about housing market conditions and the ongoing rebound in the rate of capital gains over the second half of 2016 and first two months of 2017. “The CoreLogic monthly hedonic index shows capital city dwelling values have increased by 7.8 per cent since the May 2016 rate cut. The renewed exuberance in the housing market over the past eight months is due to more than just low mortgage rates,” he said. “The re-acceleration in capital gains also co-incides with a substantial rebound in investment purchasing activity which has been a key driver of market demand and upwards price pressures.” Mr Lawless said the predicament for the RBA is clear. “They are unwilling to drop rates because this would likely add further fuel to the housing market; they don’t want to push rates higher as this will stifle consumption and investment more broadly as well as potentially place some upwards pressure on the Australian dollar,” he said. “While interest rates remain at their current low level, and in the absence of additional macro prudential measures, we should expect housing demand from investors and owner occupiers to remain strong, particularly in those cities where economic conditions remain strong and migration rates remain high.” Monetary Policy Decision Governor Philip Lowe of the RBA said conditions in the housing market vary considerably around the country. “In some markets, conditions are strong and prices are rising briskly. In other markets, prices are declining. In the eastern capital cities, a considerable additional supply of apartments is scheduled to come on stream over the next couple of years,” he said. “Growth in rents is the slowest for two decades. Borrowing for housing by investors has picked up over recent months. Supervisory measures have contributed to some strengthening of lending standards “Taking account of the available information, the board judged that holding the stance of policy unchanged at this meeting would be consistent with sustainable growth in the economy and achieving the inflation target over time.” ●

BEHIND THE GAVEL
GORDON MACDONALD
TAKING ADVANTAGE OF SOUTHERN PRICES WHETHER it’s down to football or weather, the friendly rivalry between Queensland and the southern states is a firm part of Australia’s history. But when it comes to property prices, the sort of stratospheric numbers southerners have to pay for their homes far outstrips ours - the median house price in Sydney is now over $1.1 million and Melbourne is not far behind. Just when we thought prices in the southern capitals couldn’t possibly go any higher, the latest Home Value Index from researcher CoreLogic has shown prices in Melbourne and Sydney surged again in February. The two cities are now in the top five least affordable markets in the world. Apparently, the southerners are over it. How do we know? Because many agents are
reporting that over recent weeks, they’ve been heading north in droves, apparently seeking both value and a better lifestyle. It’s not just owner occupiers, either investors seem to also be recognising the potential for price growth in our state is far greater and buyer activity is spiking. What this means for Queensland agents and their vendors is greater opportunity. With the level of competition for available property in some areas and price segments at the highest level for a decade, it’s become possible to achieve a sale both more quickly and at a premium price. The best mechanism to capitalise on competition is via the auction process. Even better, it’s a process the southerners are very familiar with and often prefer.
Regardless of whether the property is sold before, after or on auction day, a well-run auction campaign keeps the seller in the driver’s seat, sending a clear call-toaction to all parties who might be interested in buying. And it’s clearly working. Last week, The Auction Group recorded a clearance rate of 78 per cent amongst its partner agents - that’s just two per cent lower than the heady southern property markets. Whether you’re an experienced auction agent, considering running an auction for the first time, or somewhere in between, it really doesn’t matter. As fellow banana benders, we’re ideally placed to help you get your listing auction ready and achieve a great result for your vendor - and make the most of the current conditions. ●

BIG BENEFITS FROM TUITION BY HOLLIE HARRIS Does your child find school at struggle? I mean, more than most. Mine sure does and I know he’s not the only one who’s finding the school curriculum a challenge. I know how important it is to enjoy learning - when things get difficult, time begins to drag and school becomes a negative experience. My 13 year old has been dragging his feet to class all year long and often complains he doesn’t understand what the teacher is saying half the time, so we decided to look into some tutoring. This week, my son tried the introduction session at the Noosa Tutoring Centre in Noosa Junction. We spent some time with owner Justine Kerz and were instantly made to feel at home with Justine’s caring and warm nature. Her passion for what she does is palpable. After a teaching career spanning two decades, Justine felt she wasn’t able to truly help those kids to the best of her ability with large classes and a fast curriculum and decided it was time to take her teaching to a whole new level. The one-to-one programs at Noosa Tutoring Centre are based solely on the current strengths and needs of each individual student and are designed to take them forward from where they are now. Justine is genuinely excited about bringing back the enjoyment to learning at school and feels that her role is vital to
Justine explains the process along the way and after his first session, we could make a plan tailored specifically to him and his learning style. bridge the gap. “Kids seem genuinely happy to be in here. They love that one on one attention and they feel like they are really achieving, she said. I couldn’t help but feel that Justine has
found her calling. “We use the Keys To Reading technique which is unique only to us. This is an incredibly effective system which really works, Justine said. “We also teach one-on-one, which is so important for students to get that quality of tutoring. It’s far more effective than classbased tutoring and we can really tailor each lesson to the student specifically. They are all so different, she said. After an in-depth first session, Justine sat with my son and I to chat about his strengths and learning style. We talked about the things he enjoys and looked at the areas he needed some bolstering and came up with a plan of attack. She explained how quickly things can turn around and how much school life can get better with a little bit of extra commitment. We left with a clearer understanding of where my son was at academically and what would be the best plan of attack for helping him to re-gain confidence in the classroom. Justine is offering this initial session for free until the end of this term. She can sit with you and your child to tailor a specific plan for them to help get them back on track. Whether it be a preschool ‘Introduction to Prep’ session through to the senior years or even simply support to get your high schooler through a tough assessment piece, there is help out there to make your child’s school life easier.
THREE ‌ Study tips
1
Understand your study topics in your own words: Your teacher or lecturer can explain something to you, you can learn it from a textbook, your friends can study with you, even your own notes can explain it to you but all these explanations are of little use if, by the end, you can’t explain what you have learned to yourself.
2
Quiz yourself: Once you feel you understand a concept or a topic, it is important to test yourself on it. Try and replicate exam conditions as much as possible: turn your phone off, don’t talk, time yourself, etc. You can set yourself a study quiz or practice exam questions and can get a very good idea of how much you know.
3
Organise Your Study: One of the most effective study skills is also one of the most often overlooked; this is organising your study. Creating a study timetable gives you goals and a time in which to achieve them. Having a study timetable as you study is greatly motivational.

LIVE BY HOLLIE HARRIS Now in its 10th year, the show presents talented emerging and established local and national labels, and a host of international design talent. VIPs, celebrities, media and the public experience a glittering weekend of fashion, encompassing couture, ready to wear, swimwear and ethical design. On Tuesday, The Sunshine Coast International Fashion Festival 10th Anniversary Model Ambassador was selected in a secret photoshoot at The Sebel Pelican Waters Golf and Spa Resort. According to founder and director, Jacinta Richmond, the SCFF had an overwhelming amount of applications, but managed to narrow down to just seven models, five of which are from the Sunshine Coast, one from Brisbane and one from the Gold Coast. Emily Oliver, Marlene Paine, Amehka Phillips, Dane Paltmann, Isabel Mzungu-Laver, Elise Kamsma and Lily Renshaw were hopefuls to secure the coveted position. Organisers will reveal the festival ambassador next week and kick start their career full throttle. This is an important position, as it has the potential to launch the career of the chosen finalist, according to Ms Richmond.
SEVEN MODELS SHORTLISTED “Past Model Ambassadors have found great success with the last three all working in Milan, and another in New York. Getting a great image is one thing, but intelligence and social skills are also necessary,“ she said. The event is committed long term to great design, loyal relationships and to showcasing the elite of Sunshine Coast, Australia and increasingly globally. Mark your diaries - SCFF is set for Saturday, 20 and 21 October. Positioned at the end of the global fashion week circuit, its growth over the next few years is sure to become the final and celebratory destination for the industry on its annual pilgrimage of concrete jungles. The annual show is held in one of the world’s most perfect locations for fashionistas participating in the national and international fashion week circuits to undertake business and to celebrate a global industry alongside the general public, all while enjoying a glamorous resort environment. Check out the who, when and where of this this must-see event at www.sunshinecoastfashionfestival. com ●
Sunflair is recognised as being the most frequently sold swimwear brand globally and they will launch Summer 2017/2018 exclusively at the Sunshine Coast Fashion Festival this October.

Divide by Ed Sheeran
The Drifters
Miss Sloane
Sheeran’s previous albums showed the electric sparks of his fierce, bitter side when being heartbroken (Don’t, You Need Me, I Don’t Need You). Sheeran is matter-of-fact, more mature and self-assured on this album. New Man confidently and cheekily shames an ex’s new lover in what is the musical equivalent of posting gym selfies to show your former flame how well you’re doing. Perfect will be this season’s Thinking Out Loud (i.e. used for the first dance at weddings everywhere for the next two years), while Galway Girl harnesses Sheeran’s Irish roots in an interesting Celtic/hip-hop fusion, utilising fiddles and traditional flutes. The best thing about him is his ability to tell a story.
Top of SuzAnne King from Noosa Library’s list of creative and innovative authors is James A. Michener, who crafted Tales of the South Pacific - a Pulitzer prize winner turned Broadway sensation after being adapted into a musical and following that, a movie. Michener’s sagas and characters have inspired many adaptations. His novel Hawaii has leapt off the pages to the screen, and a hit television series was derived from Centennial, his historically accurate epic set on the plains of northeast Colorado, USA. Noosaville Library has a selection of Michener’s work and my favourite would have to be The Drifters. This book catalogues a period that should be of interest to us all.
Jessica Chastain is ice-queen Washington lobbyist Elizabeth Sloane - and what a role it is, as Chastain trawls every dark, filthy gutter of politics. Hardboiled? This egg is about 20 minutes. She takes on the gun lobby, in the form of the National Rifle Association, and is always five steps ahead of her opponents. It’s a film of black town cars and lobster dinners and fancy hotel rooms and - very best of all - the dense, rich meaty dialogue beloved of one Aaron Sorkin. Add Mark Strong as a foil, John Lithgow as a politician, and the dazzling Chastain in by far her greatest role to date - and you have a little slice of movie heaven. Sadly, so it’s too smart a film to find much of an audience.

In Australia, over $8-10 billion worth of food is wasted annually. This amounts to about four million tonnes of food that finds its way to landfill. Australians throw out one out of every five bags of groceries each year, amounting to about $1036. At the same time that we waste food, a majority of charitable organisations in Australia broadly and the Sunshine Coast more specifically, are unable to provide the level of food needed to meet the demand of those in need in the community. OzHarvest was formed in 2004 as a food rescue program to help feed those who are most vulnerable while at the same time addressing the issue of food wastage in Australia. Our food rescue model is simple but effective. Specifically, through a volunteer base, we rescue excess good food that might otherwise find its way to landfill (e.g. overstocked supplies, seconds, close to use by or best by dates, etc.) and redistribute that food to local charities, schools, programs and community organisations. The donated food is then either converted to meals or provided as hampers to vulnerable people in our community at no cost. OzHarvest is holding its first 2017 fundraiser: a five-course Degustation Dinner at Andrea Ravezzani’s Noosa Waterfront Restaurant. This very special event will be held on Saturday 24 March, from 6.30pm. A fund-raising auction will be held on the night with some fantastic donations being auctioned off, including a golf and spa package from Noosa Springs Resort and Spa, a premium cooking class for two at life’s a feast in Noosa, one night accommodation and degustation dinner at The Long Apron/ Spicers Clovelly Resort in Maleny and more. All the proceeds from the night will go towards the purchase of an OzHarvest van as they currently use their own vehicles to pick up and deliver food. The menu for this exsquisite five-course degustation dinner with matching Ferrari and Torbreck wines is only $120 per person and includes: Canapes ¡ Coffin Bay oyster with finger lime. ¡ Waffle cone mushrooms pate, salted praline. ¡ Duck liver with cherry gel. ¡ Vodka beetroot marinated cobia, liquorice soil.

GET READY FOR A QUALITY SERVE BY HOLLIE HARRIS Serving up delicious wood-oven pizza that transports you to Naples and a welcoming retro vibe, the new look, Zacharys is drawing crowds to the end of Hastings Street. With so many options on Hastings Street, it’s often hard to choose where to take your rumbling tummy but Zacharys is taking pizza and pasta to a level sure to satisfy the rumble (plus some!) With a son on each arm, off to I go, to dine family style and check out what all the fuss is about. Co-owner Mike Evans offers a warm welcome and invites us in to this super laid back, yet stylish restaurant . The funky street side seating feels light and beachy, fun for people watching and tantalises those design senses with warm, modern decor. Downstairs feels like an old school family pizza restaurant. It’s a great space for large groups to pile in, feel the coolness of the air-con and get that authentic experience of sharing food with those you love. There are quite a few tables with children being around 6pm, which is like a nice change in Hastings Street. My boys say they feel very welcome and at home. Then came the food. With house made pizza bases and meat bought locally, we were excited to try a selection of Zacharys best sellers. The fried calamari, served with a super creamy aioli wins my kids over, who don’t
usually like calamari. This was super tender and had a perfect crisp on the outside with the serving size being enough to share for the three of us as an entree. The pizza from the wood oven is so good you might imagine you were in Naples, except for the narrow street and Vespas (oh, wait, there is a row of scooters outside). Zachary’s food is about as colourful, fresh and hearty as one fantasises about when that craving for an Italian feast kicks in. Transport to Naples in an instant with a super simple classic like their Margherita and Milanese or satisfy a big appetite with the deluxe range of pizzas bringing in a trans-continental twist to traditional flavours. Hoison Duck pizza may sound unusual but the flavours are a perfect combination of sweet and salty, fresh and hearty, spicy and cool all at the same time. It’s quite a flavour sensation. The base is thin, crisp, and fluffy at the outside edge. The second flavour, Posh Chicken, is rich and sweet with a serious hunger busting topping of avocado and camembert. My boys tackled a bowl of Carbonara. This is one dish they have eaten a hundred times as one of their favourite meals and the thumbs go up after one forkful. “This is the best Carbonara. So creamy and so much bacon,” said my nine year old. The two of them don’t quite get through one serve - the servings sizes here are seriously good value and there was loads
of bacon. A main meal on Hastings Street under $30 (and was big enough to share with my boys) is impressive. The kids and bubs have eaten and gone before 7pm. With Flume playing in the background and the clinking of ice cold Asahis, I get the feeling that the place is going about get nice little buzz happening. As we leave, satisfied and smiling as you do after a good Italian feed, we find a crowd of people rolling in for good times and good food. Not bad on a Thursday night. ●
Half Posh Chicken half Hoisin Duck Pizza and Fettucini Carbonara. Great servings, dynamic flavours - Zacharys food just makes you feel happy.

STAY SUN SMART ALL YEAR The risk of sunburn is still high, despite the arrival of Autumn.
“A sun protection alert with daily reminders can be set up for users too the app is free to download on tablets or smartphones.” Around 3600 new cases of melanoma are diagnosed in Queensland every year, and about 350,000 non-melanoma skin cancer cases are treated. On the Sunshine Coast each year, around 460 people are diagnosed with melanoma, and about 50 people will die from the disease. Most people consider losing weight the number one reason for eating healthier. But should it be our top priority? Research typically shows that in most cases, healthy weight follows healthy choices, but those healthy choices have benefits that far exceed simple weight loss. For example, proper eating habits can lead to a decreased risk of some cancers, heart disease, chronic kidney disease and type 2 diabetes.

Noosa residents can download the SunSmart app, to stay up-to-date with realtime UV levels during Autumn. “Along with a seven-day weather forecast, the app has a sunscreen calculator function to help Queenslanders know how much sunscreen they should use for maximum coverage,” Ms Clift said.

Cancer Council is warning against sun safety complacency as Autumn kicks in, with the latest figures showing 54 per cent of Sunshine Coast adults and 64 per cent of kids get sunburnt every year. The newest data from the Preventive Health Survey serves as a warning for Noosa and Sunshine Coast locals - with the risk of sun damage and sunburn high in Queensland all year round. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said both Noosa and Sunshine Coast residents needed sun protection on most days of the year regardless of the weather or temperature. “Whenever the UV Index is three or above, locals need to take sun safety seriously and follow our five recommended sun protective behaviours,” Ms Clift said. During Autumn, UV levels will be high from around 8.30am until 4pm and will reach extreme levels. Skin damage and sunburn at these levels can occur in as little as 10 minutes if people are outdoors, unprotected from the sun during Autumn. “UV is not linked to temperature, so even on cooler or cloudier days than what we have experienced in Summer sun protection is still required,” Ms Clift said. “We urge Noosa locals to Slip on protective clothing, Slop on minimum SPF30 broad-spectrum, water-resistant

THE RAIN IS NOT ALL BAD NEWS FOR ANGLERS
THURSDAY Showers Min. 22°C

With some good rain falling around the coast, it’s sure to give the river system a bit of a shake up! Reports of good-sized buck mud crabs are on the move, with areas such as Makepeace Island and Weyba Creek being the standout spots to throw your pots, also few reports of sand crab coming from down around the river mouth. Tailor are making an appearance in the river with the mouth and Woods Bays fishing well. Fishing the Run in tide along the Sand Bags near the Dog Beach has paid dividends over the past week with nice size flathead, trevally, bream and whiting feeding on worms, nippers and prawns. Land based anglers have been fishing soft plastic around Woods Bays, Weyba Creek and up towards Tewantin, and have been very productive over the past week with flathead coming in up to 70cm. Another fish we are seeing more of in the river has been grunter bream or the barred javelin fish, these fish fight hard and are a great table fish. Jack are also still in good numbers with the majority caught at night - fishing live baits has been getting the best results. On the beaches, dart have been thick right up and down the coastline. Whiting have been in good numbers along the Noosa Northshore beaches with the fish coming onto the bite during the start of the run-out tide. Good bream are also starting to show up, with Noosa National Park Rocks well worth a go.

Larger trevally have also come from the rocks first thing in the morning and last thing in the evening, with bonito fillets and pillies doing the damage. Offshore, the wind, swell and the odd shower of rain prevented most anglers from making a run outside last week. But as the wind and swell dropped last Sunday, we saw the in close grounds firing again. Sunshine Reef, Jew Shoals and Halls Reef are worth a try for sweetlip, cobia, squire and other reefies. Slow trolling baits like garfish, bonito and xxl pilchards have accounted for some good Spanish mackerel. If you’re anchored up, a good berley trail will help keep the fish around the boat, floating pillies and livies on stinger rigs have also been chomped. There have been some great bait ball just outside the mouth with large schools of tuna feeding on them, longtail and Mack tuna have both been taken in good numbers. In the dams it is simply a case of less water more fish, even though we have had some rains the dams are still pretty low. If you are fishing Lake Macdonald, fish the edges in the low light times with surface lures and soft plastics. As the sun gets a little higher head to the deeper water with the fish holding at around 10 to 20 metres. Up at Borumba, saratoga are actively feeding morning and night and have been taking smaller shallow diving, hard body lures. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! ●

- AMAZING SPIRIT OF THE NOOSA SURFING FESTIVAL
noosatoday.com.au
There were far too many highlights of the Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing to list here, but I will mention just a couple. When I got back from an overseas trip a couple of months ago, my hardworking daughters told me they had signed a deal with a boat company to bring wake-surfing to the festival. I was both shocked and scared. Did we really want the Noosa Festival to be associated with gas-guzzling and noisy speedboats when our primary focus (outside of surfing) is on sustainability? I didn’t think so, but I was wrong. The Chaparral Boats Wake Surf Challenge was an absolute hoot, and its ambassador, world wake surfing and skim boarding champion, Austin Keen from Laguna Beach, California, was a star of the festival. Under Austin’s tutelage, a cross-section of festival competitors, ranging in age from eight to late fifties, learnt the rudiments of this fast-paced satellite sport before competing in an invitational contest, held in Laguna Bay on a beautiful afternoon when the real waves had let us down. Former world surfing champion Peter Townend and I had a ball commentating on the action out in the water from a packed beach bar.
All of the surfers performed well, including Noosa Malibu Club’s Wally Allan and Glen Gower and young Mitch Peterson, but the honours went to Hawaii’s Honolua Blomfield, who found yet another water sport to master. The other highlight I’ll mention is the spirit in which the festival was conducted. Over 30 divisions in longboard, mixed boards, body surfing and stand up paddle, held in conditions that varied from great to testing, and there was rarely a word spoken in anger. Of course, you get the odd blow-up - this is surfing after all. But to get through the biggest surfing event in the world with everyone happy and sharing the stoke, well it’s pretty damn amazing. Well done surfers, well done sponsors and supporters, and well done hardworking Sam Smith and her staff, and all the volunteers.
VALE BILL LEAK
Bill Leak.
Towards the end of the festival, I got word that Bill Leak had died at 61, just hours after making a great speech to launch a new book of cartoons and being interrupted by Sir Les

Patterson. Barry Humphries’ little cameo was a mark of the respect that this great Australian had from so many in the creative community. I didn’t always agree with the way Bill got his point across, but having known a few of our greatest cartoonists in my journalistic career, starting with Bruce Petty, I understood how edginess was his stock in trade. I didn’t know Bill well, but we were introduced by a mutual friend, the News Corp journalist Fred Pawle, about 20 years ago, and we enjoyed a few beer and wine drinking sessions at the Evil Star, a journo’s gargle house just around the corner from the offices of The Australian. In person he was as funny and as outrageous as he was in print, a clever man who could cut to the chase with a pithy one-liner. Bill was a Bondi longboarder whose sons, Jasper and Johannes, were just getting serious about surfing. I told him about the adventures I’d been having in the Mentawais with Captain Martin Daly on the Indies Trader, and he and the boys soon became surf trip regulars, until a fall from the balcony of John Singleton’s farm-house nearly took him out. And now he’s gone, another good man taken far too early. RIP Bill. ●

Well, another amazing eight days of pure stoke! While the 2017 Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing didn’t enjoy quality surf throughout, there were enough good days on First Point for the visitors to get a taste of how good it gets, and the last couple of days of marginal surf on the beach breaks did nothing to stem the stoke. The biggest surf party in the world - 900 competitors from 20 countries this year - created the best vibe on the beach we’ve seen in 26 editions of this event. The camaraderie was evident everywhere you looked, and I guess the biggest plus for Noosa was that every first-timer I spoke to - and there were a lot this year - said they would be back next year with more family and friends. For a community whose economy is largely dependent on selling beach lifestyle to the world, it doesn’t get much better than that. Towards the end of the festival, the Noosa National Surfing Reserve hosted Nick Mucha, an environmentalist who is the programs manager at World Surfing Reserves and Save The Waves Coalition in Santa Cruz, California. Nick, who was a first-timer in Noosa and in Australia, watched the festival in progress, joined in Tom Wegener’s sustainable surfboards workshop, dined with NNSR committee members and Mayor Tony Wellington, and spent a full day exploring Noosa National Park with senior Parks and Wildlife ranger Omar Bakhach. In an email to me as he was leaving town last Sunday, Nick thanked us for “revealing the Noosa magic”. “Omar graciously took me on an eighthour tour of Noosa yesterday which was a proper ’crash course’ on Noosa’s coastal resources, the incredible Noosa National Park, and the community’s planning vision and activism that has managed the human impact while stewarding the natural environment. In short it was a very insightful visit (albeit exhausting!) and I am reluctant to leave!” Nick said. Nick will now report to the World Surfing Reserves Vision Council and advise us on the timing and content of Noosa’s submission to become the ninth World Surfing Reserve. For our committee, this was a huge leap forward.

BETWEEN THE FLAGS

NEW NAME JOINS IN THE BIG SWIM It’s that time of the year again when members of the Noosa Club will gather for the annual Shirley Strachan Memorial Swim. Only this year, sadly, another name has been added to the memorial - Bruce Warren, highly regarded senior member and organiser of the original swim - who passed away after a short illness It is now the Shirley Strachan-Bruce Warren Memorial Swim. Bruce (whose forte was endurance swimming) and wife Sandy were the members responsible for the outstanding success of this event. Between Bruce and sponsor, John McDermott of McDermott Aviation they have created a swim that has now become a tradition in the Noosa Club. The swim, now known as the Shirley Strachan-Bruce Warren Memorial Swim was originally started by these men to help maintain a high standard of swimming in the Noosa club. It could not have come at a better time, as many veterans were becoming concerned by the heavy role that automation was starting to play in our clubs. With helicopters, jet boats and jet rescue skis playing the major role in a lot of rescue situations, there was some concern that the high standard of swimming may start to slip. All clubs were asked to discuss this and take the necessary steps to ensure that this would not happen.
At the Queensland state surf life saving titles. For Noosa the perfect man for the job was Bruce Warren; with his heavy background of endurance swimming, competition and coaching, there were none better suited. Also at this time John McDermott of McDermott Aviation and a member of Noosa, was looking for a function that could enable him to establish a memorial to his good mate Shirley Strachan-and what would be better than the sponsorship of a yearly swim at his club.
SURF’S UP
A meeting was arranged with Bruce and others, the swim became a reality. Now 15 years later the swim has become part of Noosa’s tradition; but unfortunately Bruce’s name is now part of the memorial. However, with his passing, wife Sandy, who was by his side right from the start and has earned the respect and support of our entire club, will be there to ensure that it continues; and Noosa club will always give it total support. For as we say in Noosa - respect is
something our people earn, it is not just given. Bruce, Sandy and John have done exactly that. For the swimmers (aged 11-60) at 9am on Sunday 19 March the 1.2-kilometre swim will get underway and you can rest assured “Old Bruciee“ will be there in spirit. Last weekend both Sunshine Beach and Noosa Heads travelled to Kirra for the Queensland titles; and the results were, in some cases - outstanding. For Sunshine, who competed with a small team of seven in the Under 17 and Under 19 age groups, the results were fantastic. In the swimming Nick Sloman cracked the unbelievable double, when he won the Under 19 and then the open surf races. On the beach contesting the Under 17 division, Tom Baker won gold in the beach flags. Olivia Emanuel and Talisa Brady won silver in board rescue and Olivia Emanuel took bronze in the belt race. Nick Sloman and Tom O’Connor won silver in the board rescue Under 19; this gave them six medals from a team of seven competitors - a great effort. Olivia Emanuel’s result in the belt race is great, as this is one of the truly traditional events of Australian Lifesaving. For Noosa who fielded a much bigger team it was also a great carnival with a total of 25 medals; six gold, nine silver and 10 bronze. For the overall score Noosa finished sixth in junior and opens and second in the masters. For both clubs - well done to all. ●
HOLLLIE HARRIS
FESTIVAL OF SURFING ENDS ON A POINT Another end to a great surfing event for the year, and although the finals fell a little flat, the overall event enjoyed the perfect point waves synonymous with Noosa. The Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing wrapped up at the alternative location. The Under 15s saw exceptional form from Hawaiian Kelis Keleopa’a and our local up-and-comer, Liliana Bowrey coming in fourth place. The boys final was super tight. There was some very impressive surfing coming out of this age group and Josh Armistead snuck in first. Festival organisers called the interference from defending champion Honolua Blomfield “very unfortunate and uncharacteristic” and she was relegated to fifth, with Mason Schremmer taking the undisputed win for the Australian in the Salt Magazine Women’s Under 18. A big performance that secured a win for Kaniela Stewart against local talent in Kai Annetts, Nic Brewer, Cale Coulter and Tom Morat. Sue Altman took out the Magoo Memorial 70 and Over Open and the World Surfaris Men’s 65 and Over crown went to Earle Page and Albie Curtis was a very stoked victor in the Old Guys Rule Men’s 60 and Over final. It’s such fun to watch the stoke continuing on right through their sixties and seventies (plus some) in these tussles. noosatoday.com.au
Swell and tide dropping, wind elevating from the north, conditions were rapidly deteriorating. Crowd favourite - the inaugural Gordon and Smith ‘Switch’ Invitational - saw local legend Josh Constable surfing brilliantly on both long and shortboards, but couldn’t quite nab the win from Gordon and Smith team rider Dane Wilson. Crumbling waves didn’t offer much for the Logger Pros to get up the nose on, but they worked hard with what they had. Local lad, Clinton Guest somehow managed 11 seconds of tip time taking him the victory. With barely a ripple left in sight, the Logger Pro competitors did their best to create something out of nothing. Bowie Pollard found a bump to ride and took the win. As quickly as it arrives, the festival vanishes from sight and the points are quiet once again. After a run of nothing in Noosa and a mess out on the opens, there hasn’t been much to play on up here. The Gold Coast has had some great surf over the last week with near perfect four-foot sets peeling through Snapper Rocks. Onshore winds developing over the weekend will confine the best waves to only a handful of protected spots. Next week looks pretty solid and with plenty of rain keeping some of the crowd away, we could be in for a nice start to the week. ●
