Jaylen gets very special care
Jaylen has a serious medical condition that requires 24-hour care. 165607
A birth defect means Endeavour Hills six-yearold Jaylen Cornish requires 24-hour care. And thanks to Very Special Kids, Jaylen’s mother Katie can take a break. The single mum first turned to the charity for emotional support and respite care when Jaylen was four years old after he had been born with his intestines protruding from his body, a condition known as gastroschesis. “The hospice is like a vacation for Jaylen, he loves all the attention he gets from the nurses and going for walks in the garden,” Ms Cornish said. “It also means I can get some time off which is really important. “Having a sick child means you have to give up a lot of things. “I love sport but I can’t play it as much however, when Jaylen’s staying at the hospice I can, which is an amazing help.” Very Special Kids CEO Michael Wasley said the hospice was more than 20 years old and needed an upgrade. A group of 40 senior business executives hope that getting on their bikes will help to fund the renovation. Chain Reaction signed up to ride more than 1000 kilometres, from Sydney to Brisbane, from 11 to 17 March. Visit chain-reaction.org.au to sponsor a rider or to make a donation.
■ Businesses ordered to control airborne pollution...
Dust storm victory “Dust levels at the residential properties would likely fluctuate at times of differing weather conditions,” she said. Testing showed the council-maintained gravel road was “not likely to be a significant contributor” to the sampled sites’ dust impacts, Ms Mathias said. A long-suffering Hampton Park resident said the results confirmed the “grit” was coming from the compost, mulch and soil works businesses and not the gravel road. He and his family are among several complainants about 400 metres south who had blamed asthma, wheezing, severe skin hives, and eye irritations on the dust swirling from the soil yards. He is planning to build a $30,000 enclosed per-

gola to block out the dust that is blown onto his property with hot northerlies. “They confirmed it’s grit and not just ordinary dust, which is what we all argued several years ago. “I really hope there’s a solution.” Meanwhile, dust-plagued business-owner Paul McBeth said in “the most incredible co-incidence” the council gave the road “the most intensive conditioning I’ve known” on 10 March just days ahead of an anticipated EPA site visit. He had told Star News recently that staff at his business, Marvel Packers, had been choking on dust clouds kicked up by a heavy stream of trucks on O’Grady Road. Continued page 3

Two industrial businesses on O’Grady Road, Hallam, have been pin-pointed as the source for dust and grit plaguing nearby residents and workers. The probe comes after the Journal first highlighted the problem in December. Two of three soil and mulch yards on the road are set to be issued with pollution abatement notices by the state’s environmental watchdog, the Environment Protection Authority Victoria. EPA southern metro manager Marleen Mathias said dust had been observed leaving the two premises during a 10 March inspection, despite the sites “actively using dust suppression vehicles”.
The pollution abatement notices will require further dust controls to ensure no impact on the “local environment” or the businesses face potential fines up to $777,300, Ms Mathias said. A third business in the area with “dust-generating” activity passed inspection. Several neighbouring Hallam businesses and Hampton Park residents had pointed the finger at the road’s soil and mulch yards, blaming the businesses for health afflictions and thick coatings of silt on their decks, paths, windowsills and vehicles. Ms Mathias said recent EPA monitoring detected elevated dust levels in the surrounding industrial area but not at neighbouring residences.

Stabbed with pitchfork By Cam Lucadou-Wells Stabbed with a pitchfork in his own home, Cranbourne North widower Rick Maaskant is sadly no stranger to outrageous crime. An unarmed Mr Maaskant was stabbed in the head and kicked in the back by three male intruders, about 11.20pm on Wednesday 15 March. It’s the latest in a string of crimes that the retired cleaning business owner has been on the receiving end of. He’s had five cars, his wallet and TV remotes stolen from his Endeavour Drive home, he says. But he’d never confronted intruders in his house before. The grandfather of three says if they were second-time offenders they should “put them on a plane and drop them in the ocean”. “We don’t need any more police, we don’t need any more jails,” he said. “They just keep turning up.” Mr Maaskant had been in bed for 10 minutes when he was awoken by a “big bang” inside the house. The intruders - described as Caucasian, in their early twenties and wearing dark hoodies - had smashed the glass on his recently-replaced sliding back door. He found them in his hallway, asked them what they were doing and started fighting them with just his hands. One of the males held a pitchfork to his face, another kicked him in the back seemingly to bring him to ground. “I couldn’t do much because this fork was in my face.” In the scuffle, an unarmed Mr Maaskant was deeply stabbed just above his right eye and behind his left ear. Mr Maaskant considers himself lucky to have escaped with just those wounds. “Blood was everywhere,” he said. “I think the blood frightened the guys off.” Mr Maaskant thinks the intruders were at least associates of earlier car thieves, who had broken

He said his neighbourhood had no problems until a particular household of people moved in nearby, as he told Star News in September. “It never ends, it never ends - now I can’t even run my business because I don’t have a car,” he said at the time. “Every time I leave here when I come back someone has been inside - how do you feel after that?” Mr Maaskant thinks his wife died from the “shock” of being victim of one of the car thefts.
When the car was stolen and found with “every piece of glass” smashed, she had become sad and died from a heart attack, he said. After the most recent assault, Mr Maaskant said one of the occupants had been recently jailed over one of the thefts. “I’m living with all those criminals in my street. “But I don’t think I should be moving. They should be moving. “I’m thinking about a german shepherd.” Any information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersvic.com.au

From front page “The road was teeming with graders, tip trucks and specialised dust-suppressant trucks all morning which has completely transformed the road - for now. “By carrying out these works directly before the EPAs assessment the council is making a mockery of the whole matter. “I might be completely wrong and perhaps council are taking the issue of safety seriously at last, but the timing is one hell of a coincidence.” Casey city presentation manager David Richardson said the council was unaware of the timing of the EPA planning further tests at the road. He said the treatment was part of routine maintenance that included a second application of dust suppressant on the road. The council’s maintenance regime included at least one dust suppressant treatment annually, he said.
Passing through? Here’s $1m Two Dandenong visitors walked out of the suburb with a million-dollar ticket. The married couple bought a QuickPick from the Dandenong Plaza Lotto store on Wednesday 15 March and on Thursday learnt that they’d won the $1 million division one prize. “Fantastic! We can own a home! Pay all the bills!” the husband said. “It’s even better than that. I really couldn’t have asked for this to happen at a better time in my life.” The couple, who wish to remain anonymous, regularly enter Tatts draws. “It will make a very big difference to us,” he said. “It’s been the best day! I always said this would happen one day. I had a feeling for a long, long time and I came close quite a few times. “We don’t have a house, so we would like to buy our first one. It’s absolutely fantastic. “We’ve got quite a few family members who we’d like to help, too.”
Car caves in front of Mayor Aziz’s home
Victory over dust storms
In Brief
The family of Casey’s Mayor Sam Aziz has narrowly avoided injury after an elderly neighbour crashed into the front of their home in Berwick. Police investigators have been told 2016 model Mercedes Benz was travelling along the road about 3.30pm Tuesday 14 March when the driver lost control and crashed into two properties. It is believed the driver, a female in her sixties, veered off the road and smashed through a sandstone pillar letterbox. The car then ploughed through a side fence between one house and Cr Aziz’s property before smashing headlong into the front of Cr Aziz’s house and coming to rest. The woman was taken to Dandenong Hospital in a stable condition but police said the cause of her erratic driving remained unknown.

Hot ride A Porsche Boxster went from burn-outs to burnt out in Dandenong South. A passer-by spotted the silver car engulfed in flames on Glasscocks Road about 1am on Saturday 11 March. The CFA attended and extinguished the fire. Police said the car had front-end damage so it might have been involved a collision prior to being torched. It was spotted performing burnouts just prior to the fire, police said. Call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 with any information.

Cr Aziz’s wife and children were home at the time but were not injured. Cr Aziz said he had to force the front door open to get in and out of the house when he rushed home from the council. “I struggled to get the front door open because of the damage and my wife said ‘don’t come in’ because of the damage,” he said. “There is cracked plaster and extensive damage inside the house as well.” “Usually the neighbour’s kids are out playing in the driveway next door so it’s very lucky they weren’t there at the time.” “I’m just glad everyone is OK and I hope the driver will be OK.” Building inspectors and police remain on site to see if the family can stay at their home after the damage it sustained and police are investigating the cause of the crash.
Police are hunting a burglar who broke in to a Keysborough car wash. Greater Dandenong CIU detectives are appealing for public help to identify the man involved. They allege he broke into the Cheltenham Road car wash’s office area, about 11.10am on Sunday 5 March, rummaged through doors and cabinets and stole cash. Investigators have released an image of a man that they believe might be able to assist with their inquiries. Court after bikie arrests
In Brief Cash boost for show
By Cam Lucadou-Wells Several people are due to appear in court today (20 March) after a series of anti-bikie raids in Dandenong South, Eumemmerring, Lyndhurst and across Melbourne’s south-east. Police Assistant Commissioner Stephen Fontana said a “very senior” Comancheros member was arrested at a house at Lyndhurst where at least two vehicles were seized during the 14 March raids. The 35-year-old was charged with 15 offences including trafficking a large commercial quantity of meth, inciting another to intentionally cause injury and recklessly endanger life, conspiracy to commit criminal damage by fire, possessing an unregistered handgun and traffic offences. Among others arrested were a 29-year-old Dandenong South man and a 27-year-old Narre Warren South man who were charged with drugs, firearms offences and conspiracy to engage in reckless conduct endangering life. They were remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court today. Mr Fontana said that some of those arrested would be charged over a firebombing of a Rebels clubhouse in Dandenong in October. Twenty-five homes, a business and a factory were raided in suburbs across Melbourne, including Berwick, Narre Warren, Cranbourne, Cranbourne North, Cranbourne West, Dandenong South, Beaconsfield, Keysborough, Clyde North, Lysterfield South and Eumemmerring. Investigators said they seized vehicles, a firearm, jewellery, cash and several types of drugs, including cocaine, methamphetamine, GHB, cannabis, ecstasy and steroids. A 31-year-old Cranbourne North man was
The Dandenong Agricultural and Pastoral Society has received a $5708 boost. The State Government awarded the cash through its Agricultural and Pastoral Grants Program. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams announced the funding on Friday 10 March. She said the society would use it to widen and lengthen the existing earth animal loading ramp used at the annual Dandenong Show and other events throughout the year. Agriculture Minister Jaala Pulford said shows like Dandenong’s promoted agricultural production and gave farmers a chance to share knowledge among themselves and with the broader community. “Field days are a great day out with the family, bringing local communities together,” she said. A Range Rover seized from a garage at Lyndhurst during the raids. 166011 charged with offences including aggravated burglary, criminal damage by fire, kidnapping, two counts of motor theft and five counts of breaching bail. Six people from Tyabb, Berwick, Beaconsfield, Cranbourne West, Cranbourne and Clyde North were bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 20 March on a variety of drug and firearms offences. According to Victoria Police, four others were bailed and three were expected to be charged on summons. Three of the 22 people arrested were released without charge. Police, including officers from Echo Taskforce and the Australian Federal Police anti-gang unit had investigated a Comancheros and Rebels bikie gang feud which included the Kittens fire-bomb-

ing as well as 20 non-fatal drive-by shootings, Mr Fontana said. During their investigations, police had also “effectively disrupted” other fire-bombings and drive-by shootings. “It’s not uncommon for these groups to be fighting over territory and illicit activity,” he said. About 300 state and federal police were involved in the latest raids. “We are not intimidated by OMCGs and we will not allow our communities to be,” Mr Fontana said. “We know these groups have long histories of engaging in warfare amongst themselves, however the indiscriminate nature of their attacks including drive-by shootings means there is immense potential to endanger innocent members of the public.”
Flying fox numbers are in ‘free-fall’ as habitat dries up By Cam Lucadou-Wells Don’t be deceived by the near-record numbers of grey-headed flying fox bats roosting upside down beside Dandenong Creek, Doveton. This is a species in population “free-fall”, according to its devout advocates. The colony’s large numbers - hitting an estimated 35,000 in February - are a result of being driven south by climate change, lack of habitat and dwindling food supply, says Victorian Advocates for Animals spokesman Lawrence Pope. The national population is about 300,000 - just one per cent of the estimated numbers a century ago. During summer, whole camps of bats in New South Wales died due to heat stress, Mr Pope said. At the same time, gumtrees have been failing to flower - depriving the bats of their desired nectar. Mr Pope is campaigning for regulation of netting on backyard fruit-trees, which kill more than 500 flying foxes a year in Melbourne. Wildlife-friendly nets or fruit bags were safe alternatives that guaranteed a fruit yield as well as preserving bats’ safety, Mr Pope said. “It’s unsafe netting if you can poke your fingers through the gaps,” is Mr Pope’s rule of thumb. “What would be even better would be to take the nets off the trees and give the animals something to eat.” The bats rest during the day after covering up to 80 kilometres during the night. On their travels, they fossick on native flowering
Chance to give their best Greater Dandenong students are getting connected with volunteering. Dandenong High School, Lyndale Secondary College and Emerson School will each receive up to $9725 from the State Government to connect students with local volunteering opportunities. The cash will come from the $4.46 million Advance funding pool, directed at secondary schools in areas of high socio-economic disadvantage. It will help schools to connect young people to conservation programs, Surf Life Saving Associations, community radio programs, emergency services and animal welfare projects. Participants will develop practical teamwork, communication and project management skills. “Young people in Dandenong have so much to offer and the Advance program is giving them the opportunity to get involved in local initiatives and connect with their communities,” Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said. “Programs like Advance help young people in Dandenong establish life skills and valuable experience and they teach the importance of giving back to the community.”

Through the year, they deliver vital long-distance cross-pollination between diverse interstate tree species, Mr Pope says. The genetic inter-mixing increases the health of native forests and speeds the regeneration of logged coupes. Each month, a group of committed volunteers, each with clicker counters, count the chattering
thousands of Doveton bats as they soar out to their night-time feeding missions. They come out just before dusk each month, even in the depths of winter, meeting on the Tuesday closest to the risen full moon. As the site awakens with flapping, squawking bats circling and spreading towards the outskirts of Melbourne, even the most experienced of their helpers can’t help but admire the spectacle.
It’s that time of year again where kids from all over the region come together for a free day of fun that is all about them. In a not-to-be-missed event, there will be characters from the Trolls and Paw Patrol to entertain the crowds with shows on the main stage, and will meet and greet with their fans on the day. The interactive activates will know no bounds with children participating in free workshops including world globe decoration, badge making and opportunities to make scratch door hangers, bracelets, pirate hats and fairy wings. Four years behind bars By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Narre Warren man has been jailed for at least four years for firing eight bullets into an inhabited brothel during a drive-by shooting in Caulfield South last year. Patrick O’Kelly, 27, had pleaded guilty at the Victorian County Court to 15 charges including trafficking ice, car theft, recklessly endangering people and being a prohibited person using a firearm. About 2.55am on 30 March, O’Kelly sat in the back seat of a stolen Porsche, wound down the window and fired eight shots from a 0.223-calibre rifle. Seven of the rounds struck the front of the Club 859 brothel, with one shattering a shower screen inside and narrowly missing a female worker. Another ricocheted from the building into a nearby tram shelter.
At the time, there were six people inside the premises. Inside the Porsche that afternoon, police seized ammunition, a hand-written note with the brothel’s address, a key to a stolen Navara ute, an imitation firearm as well as more than 65 grams of meth. They also seized cannabis, GHB and cocaine from the car. In a search on O’Kelly’s home, police discovered a stolen double-barrel shotgun and cartridges, a samurai sword and numchucks, and stolen number-plates. At the time, O’Kelly was a disqualified driver with prior driving-while-suspended, drug and firearm convictions. He had been “off my head” on an ice habit of up to two grams a day, blaming it for his “stupidity” and anti-social impulses. During his 335 days in pre-sentence custody, O’Kelly had become free of his addiction and de-
pressive mood disorder, his lawyer had argued. In sentencing on 10 March, Judge Susan Pullen said O’Kelly showed some remorse for his “extreme act of violence”. Judge Pullen was however troubled by his lack of clear explanations for his offending or the preplanning, other than intending to give the brothel occupants and owners a “message”. The judge also noted O’Kelly relapsed into drug use and breached a community corrections order within a month of being released from jail in 2015. She was therefore “guarded” when assessing the accused’s prospects for rehabilitation and commitment to drug treatment. She jailed O’Kelly for five years, 10 months and 14 days with a four-year non-parole period. His driving licence was disqualified for five years.
A man drives into a bar ... and police give him a serve A driver landed in a tight spot at the pub after trying to flee from police in Hallam. A Victoria Police spokeswoman said officers tried to intercept a Ford Festiva sedan on Hallam Road about 1.20pm on Friday 10 March. The driver allegedly took off and tried to squeeze the car between the bar entrance and a brick pillar at the Hallam Hotel and became wedged. Police apprehended the driver, who assisted them with their inquiries. The Hallam Hotel declined to comment.
The driver tried unsuccessfully to drive through a narrow gap.
Evading police, the Festiva driver got himself in a jam when his car became wedged between the pillar and wall.
Beardon’s exit shocks council By Victoria Stone-Meadows Casey Council will have a new face at the table in under a month, following the shock resignation of Councillor Steve Beardon on Wednesday 8 March. Cr Beardon tendered his resignation to Casey Council CEO Mike Tyler on Wednesday, following an alleged argument between Cr Beardon and a female member of council. The alleged argument took place on Tuesday 7 March, following a council meeting where Cr Beardon was officially reprimanded and two investigations were launched into his conduct over recent months. Casey Council announced a countback of votes from the October 2016 general election would be used instead of a byelection to determine who will replace Cr Beardon as one of two representatives of the Mayfield Ward. The Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) has confirmed while no date has been set for countback, the law requires a replacement councillor to be selected within 28 days of a resignation. The VEC said a notice regarding Cr Beardon’s resignation would be published Thursday 16 March and the countback would be at least 14 days after this. The ballot papers from the October 2016 election that elected Cr Beardon to office will be included in the countback. The likely candidates to replace Cr Beardon that received the highest number of first preference votes are former councillor Gary Rowe and candidates Rob Ward, Suzanne Lokot, and Shabnam Safa. Meanwhile, the resignation of Steve Beardon leaves Cr Amanda Stapledon as the sole representative of Mayfield ward. “I’m not daunted by that,” she said.
It’s none of our business but… A design for a new Dandenong Ambulance Station has emerged. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams shared the image online on Thursday 16 March. The Journal announced in August 2015 that the station would receive an overhaul. It’s one of the state’s busiest stations but facilities are “inadequate for a modern ambulance service”. The new facility, on the same site, is forecast to be fully operational next year. The Wallara Weapon made an unconventional entry into the Yarra at the Moomba Birdman Rally. The occasion overwhelmed pilot Stacey Edwards and vision from the Sunday 12 March event shows her sending the aircraft into the drink from the four-metre platform. She was the competition’s first entrant with Down syndrome and the Wallara crew was proud of her efforts, their winged creation
Greater Dandenong councillor Matthew Kirwan and his wife Jennie are expecting twin girls in August. His fellow councillors proudly spread the news following the Tuesday 14 March meeting. Cr Kirwan said he was “excited but slightly daunted as well!”

8 March 1917 Saturday half-holiday opposed At a meeting of the Cranbourne Shire Council on Saturday, Mrs E A Forest of Clyde applied for the council’s consent to an alteration of the weekly half-holiday on Wednesday to Saturday afternoon, at the local post office. Cr Hardy moved that the request be granted, as had been done in other centres in the shire. Cr Callanan opposed the application, as it meant considerable inconvenience to people in the shire. He suggested that the motion be withdrawn and he would move that the Postmaster General be written to, requesting that all post offices within the shire be kept open on all weekdays in future. Cr Wilson said that it might appear hard for the officers not to have a half-holiday on Saturday.
9 March 1967 New phone dialling to affect 22,000 Massive campaign to ‘kill’ four prefix The Post Master General’s Department has launched a massive re-education program for telephone subscribers in the Dandenong exchange area. Letter cards, public telephone booth posters and new directories have been distributed to warn subscribers NOT to dial a four prefix when ringing the metropolitan area. From 1am on Sunday, local subscribers will be incorporated as part of the metropolitan telephone network and the use of four as a prefix will no longer be necessary. Anyone who dials a four prefix after 1am on Sunday will be connected to a wrong number.
10 March 1997 Back to the ballot The City of Greater Dandenong goes to the polls on Saturday for the first time in two years. The council elections will see the end of the commissioners for Dandenong and Springvale. We asked the candidates for their personal details including name, age address, family details and political endorsements. We also asked them two questions: What are the issues in your ward? and Where is Greater Dandenong heading? Read the responses. Voting is compulsory for residents of the City of Greater Dandenong who are enrolled on the voters’ roll. Wards are listed below: Cleeland, Lyndale, Dandenong, Noble Park, Dandenong North, Noble Park North, Keysborough, Springvale, Keysborough South and Springvale North.
5 March 2012 Council bollard plan hits bump in road Greater Dandenong councillor Angela Long has blocked a contentious council move to close part of Herbert Street during school hours. The bollards are designed to protect students crossing the street between Dandenong High School’s neighbouring campuses. However, 794 of 950 surveyed residents opposed the street’s closure. After the council meeting, Cr Long submitted a rescission motion to defer a vote on the matter until the next meeting on 15 March. Cr Long said residents would lose direct access to Princes Highway via Herbert Street if the street was closed. The council’s preferred option had been traffic lights, but the education department had refused to fund them as it found bollards were safer.
Seaman was a major landholder What’s In a Name delves into the fascinating stories and personalities behind some of the city’s bestknown street names. This week the Journal looks at Ross Street, which runs parallel to Stud Road in Dandenong and was named after Captain David Ross. Captain David Ross was from Ross-shire in Scotland and for many years in the early 1850s traded with a fleet of ships between England, the United States of America, China, New Zealand and Australia. The Dandenong and District Historical Society said he named one of his vessels after his first wife Maria Ross and also sailed the Chelsea and the Commodore. Captain Ross was one of the first ship masters to enter Port Phillip bay and was said to be highly respected by his seafaring brethren. He bought The Grange property in Dande-
WHAT’S IN A
NAME nong from RC Walker in 1866. The property was 1000 acres and was bounded by Melbourne, Gladstone, Heatherton, and Kidds roads. While Captain Ross owned the land, he leased the property after purchase to Dr Bathe who combined breeding thoroughbred horses with cattleraising. There were no roads through the property in those days and traffic to Ferntree Gully went across it by favour of Captain Ross, who eventu-
ally granted a permanent right of way and thus created Stud Road. He died at the age of 46 on 2 April 1869. On 13 January 1892 there was an executor’s sale of his estate in the form of acreage business and villa sites. Frontages were offered on Dandenong Road, Clow Street and Stud Road, with blocks varying from three acres to 30 acres with frontages to the Dandenong Creek. Buyers were scarce when the subdivisional auction was held of 28 blocks of four to 10 acres in the old Grange Estate. The land was described as “right on the edge of the prosperous and thriving township of Dandenong, only five minutes from the Town Hall and 10 minutes from the station”. High-visibility hospital takes shape The much-anticipated redeveloped St John of God Berwick Hospital is set to open its doors in late 2017. The seven storey building of a two-level underground carpark and five-level hospital services is located on Kangan Drive, Berwick, and is highly visible from many vantage points around the Casey region. St John of God CEO Lisa Norman said this visibility had led to many inquiries and questions from the community about the hospital. In answer to some of the most frequently asked questions, she said the new hospital would offer all of the services currently offered at the Gibb Street hospital, as well as new services. There will be 202 beds, an intensive care unit, eight operating theatres, a cardiac and vascular catheter laboratory, cardiac unit, six birthing suites, a six cot special care nursery and 350 basement car parks. Ms Norman said the current Gibb Street hospital would operate as usual during construction. “We will relocate all services currently located at Gibb Street to the new hospital in Kangan Drive,” she said. “The Gibb Street facility will temporarily close whilst it undergoes a redevelopment of its own and will be transformed into a rehabilitation hospital that will open in mid-2018. “Our consulting suites and pathology laboratory will be relocated to the new hospital. This creates an opportunity for new services in this facility.” Ms Norman said parking prices would be similar to the Casey Hospital car parking fees and there would be no emergency department at the new hospital when it opened. “There will be no ED in this stage. Future planning has considered the addition of an ED at the Kangan Drive Hospital,” she said. Ms Norman said there would be plenty of opportunities for employment at St John of God

Hole in ozone theory, but do cover up Is the high UV index in Australia due to an ‘ozone hole’ ? In a word ‘no’ it is not, according to Mike Inskip at Sun Patrol. “The ‘UV index’ is a measure of the amount of skin cancer causing ultraviolet radiation that reaches the earth’s surface,” Mr Inskip said. “The UV index is definitely higher in an Australian summer than at an equivalent latitude in the northern hemisphere during their summer. But this is not due to the Antarctic ‘ozone hole’. “This ozone hole certainly exists but it only affects Antarctica and the areas of the southern ocean immediately around this continent. It has never affected Australia. We are simply too far north.” Mr Inskip said the UV index in Australia was higher because of the elliptical orbit of the earth around the sun brings the southern hemisphere five million kilometres closer to the sun in summer compared to the northern hemisphere in summer.

Business profile
Seafood served by family tradition Doveton Seafoods has been feeding families for 50 years. Larry Ma and partner Larissa Zhao bought the business in July last year and didn’t realise how old it was. Locals dated the shop back to 1967. “We decided to celebrate the shop,” Larry said. He was a chef for 15 years, including four at the Grand Hyatt in Melbourne. “After that I decided to go for my own shop,” he said. “I wanted to have more freedom.” Larissa had bought her first fish and chip shop six years earlier, in Kilsyth, so Larry followed her into the field. “This is our fifth shop,” he said. Larry said burgers and souvlakis were among the shop’s specialties. “We learnt it from one of the previous landlords,” he said. “He’s Greek and he has 40 years of experience. “While keeping it authentic, we try to adjust it to suit the modern trend as well.” He is bringing his hotel experience into the shop. “We always addressed the guests by name in the hotel,” he said. “Whenever we see the customers, we always greet them with a smile and we always call them by name whenever we can. “It makes the whole experience better for them.” 10 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 20 March, 2017

It’s time to put the cricket whites on the rack for another year and dust off the football boots because footy is finally back with the TAC Cup beginning in just six days’ time. And it all begins with a battle between two of the competition’s most healthy rivals - the Stingrays and the Power. It’s been a slightly unconventional pre-season for the Rays who have been utilizing the elite facilities down at Frankston VFL ground rather than their spiritual home at Shepley Oval. Both sides have completed equally gruelling pre-season campaigns and both are primed to bounce back from disappointing 2016 campaigns. Last year the Rays were head-and-shoulders above the rest of the competition, finishing topof-the-ladder before falling away in straight-set defeats, while the Power finished ninth. LAST TIME THEY MET: In Round 10 last year, the Stingrays overcame a slow first-quarter to overrun the Power by 8 points at Shepley Oval. With scores level at 46-46 at three-quarter time, the Rays kicked away in the final term to register yet another win. PLAYERS TO WATCH: There are plenty of talented youngsters on offer from the Rays, but Tom De Koning is going to be an excitement machine throughout 2017. Others such as Oscar Clavarino and Hunter Clark are ones to watch and integral to the makeup of the side. For the Power, their 19-year-old overage star Sean Masterson will be a key player and one that can light it up. After an exciting 2016 season, the talented forward is back in the fold and ready to prove a point. PREDICTION: Stingrays by 21 points.

Superstar Spoljaric is set to claim his fifth Wookey ALAN WOOKEY MEDAL PREVIEW Star News Journalist NICK CREELY has tipped Cranbourne legend Steven Spoljaric to win his fifth Wookey Medal on Wednesday 22 March at the presentation evening. After winning his maiden Wookey at Parkfield in 2010/11, Spoljaric won a further two at the Bears before winning his first with the Eagles in 2014/15. The voting procedure is a 3,2,1 at the conclusion of each Turf 1 match, and does not include Twenty20 cricket. In what was another extraordinary individual season for the Eagles skipper, Spoljaric scored 681 runs at an average of 85.1 as well as taking 25 wickets at an average of 18.4. Spoljaric received the maximum three votes
on four occasions - in Round 3 he scored 153 and took 2/53, in Round 4 he made 158 and took 3/28, in Round 5 he scored 34 and took 5/19 and 3/39, and finally in Round 10 he scored 123 and took 1/57. On a statistical point-of-view it is perhaps his finest season, topping the runs aggregate while also entrenching himself in the top-five for wickets too. In close second was Mordialloc’s Ian Daniel, who enjoyed another stellar all-round season. Scoring 438 runs at a tick under 40, Daniel also took 25 wickets at an incredible average of 12.0. Tied with Daniel is Berwick fast-bowler Jarrod Armitage. In his first season at the Cave, Armitage exceeded expectations as a batsman, scoring two centuries and 395 runs, but it was with the
ball that he shone, taking 27 wickets for the season. Although the Bears eventually missed out on qualifying for the Turf 1 finals, Armitage was a dominant force all season. Rounding out the top-seeds is Janaka Liyanabadalge, who had an extraordinary season at Narre Warren. In the struggling side, Janaka scored seven half-centuries and 561 runs, and also averaged a wicket per game. Jarrod Goodes from Berwick, who took 27 wickets at 12.4 for the season, as well as chiming in with over 200 runs is in the mix, while regulars in the count Matt Chasemore, Chathura Athukorala and Craig Slocombe were also tied and had stellar seasons.
The Rowville Football Club has named a new skipper for the 2017 season with Alex Frawley named as the new leader. The dual Mynott medallist and club legend forms part of a new-look leadership group with emerging ruckman Mitch Garner and the reigning 2016 Chandler medallist Cameron Manual appointed as joint vice-captains. To round out the Hawks’ leadership group are key defender Daniel Zajac, Luke Daidone and former VFL jet James Wilsen. It’s already been a hectic off-season down at Seebeck Oval as they chase a maiden Division 1 premiership in the Eastern Football League. The club has already announced that it has re-signed Mat Suckling, originally from Norwood in the SANFL, as well a plethora of former VFL players - seven in fact - with Michael Sikora, James Wilsen, Jake Dermott, Jordan Bastinac, Jake Kidd, Jackson Anderson and Jayden Cyster joining the powerful club. In the Journal’s other local EFL side, Noble Park is having a solid pre-season as it gears up to go one step further in 2017. It has added Brenton Wells from Narre Warren, Ryan O’Dell from Mornington, as well as the higher profile recruits Hudston Thomas from the Frankston Dolphins and James Gwilt from the AFL. And in the Southern Football League, Keysborough is gearing up for a big season as the expectations continue to rise at Keysborough Reserve. Early last week, the club announced that TAC Cup star and Sandringham Dragon Jacob Bakes has nominated it as his senior club for 2017. A highly touted youngster, it is definitely a coup for the club. In a frantic off-season, the Boroughs have added a further 16 players to their list for 2017, with a range of youngsters such as Tom Siposs from Beaconsfield and Jack Cole from Mt Eliza set to add a touch of class. They have also managed a solid retention rate for the upcoming season, with over three-quarters of the squad being retained for 2017. And Lyndale, under Brad Bruni at Barry Powell Reserve, is in a strong position for the season after a strong pre-season. Narrowly missing out on finals last season, the club has added some strong additions to its squad, with Liam and Jordan Toole from Cora Lynn among them. The Journal will be releasing its 2017 Football Preview on 3 April.
Panthers flopped when they should have just pounced By Nicholas Creely For a season that promised so much, it delivered very little. That’s not to say the Panthers didn’t have a wonderful home-and-away season because they did, but the way it ended would have left a sour taste down at Shepley. All season the Panthers were almost too good for the competition and seemed destined to win yet another piece of silverware. But for reasons the club probably needs to explore, it was unable to deliver at the final hurdle when it was in a position to pounce. Here’s a recap of how Dandenong’s season panned out: Round 1 replay: Footscray-Edgewater 5/302 def Dandenong 8/277 Round 2: Dandenong 6/173 Monash Tigers 7/172 Round 3: Dandenong 1/150 def Melbourne University 149 Round 4: Dandenong 1/178 def Fitzroy Doncaster 9/175 Round 5: Dandenong drew Greenvale Kangaroos Round 6: Dandenong 7/197 def Kingston Hawthorn
Round 7: Dandenong 280 def Prahran 130 and 4/170 Round 8: Dandenong 4/114 def Casey-South Melbourne 111 Round 9: Dandenong 4/204 def Ringwood 5/167 Round 10: Northcote 2/132 def Dandenong 6/131 Round 11: Dandenong 3/156 def Essendon 6/152 Round 12: Carlton 7/351 drew Dandenong 9/320 Round 13: Camberwell Magpies 5/171 def Dandenong 9/170 Round 14: Dandenong 5/380 def Geelong 242 Round 15: Dandenong 8/361 def Melbourne 243 Round 16: Dandenong 4/279 def Frankston Peninsula 230 Round 17: St Kilda 6/335 def Dandenong 226 Semi-Final: Melbourne 239 def Dandenong 129 MOST RUNS: Brett Forsyth, 596 runs at 39.73 James Pattinson, 560 runs at 62.22 MOST WICKETS: James Nanopoulos, 30 wickets at 21.90 Adam McMaster, 27 wickets at 28.63 THE SURPRISE PACKET: Lincoln Edwards, 543 runs at 41.77
BEST INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE: Massive apologies to Panthers skipper Tom Donnell who played one of the most extraordinary knocks back in Round 3. Donnell blasted 114 not out in just 60 balls at Shepley Oval against Melbourne Uni. But the best performance this year by a Panther has to be Pattinson’s all-round masterclass in Round 15 against Melbourne. Pattinson made 131 before taking 6/43 in one of the best Premier Cricket performances of the last decade. PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Brett Forsyth had yet another strong year at the top-of-the-order, Lincoln Edwards became a mainstay and played some vital knocks, James Nanopoulos was the club’s most consistent, but James Pattinson enjoyed a truly stellar season and was easily the Panthers best. In his comeback year after injuring himself seriously against New Zealand in a test-match for Australia, Pattinson knocked up 560 runs in 10 innings and also took 18 wickets from just 60 overs. Enough said.

Stingrays set for a long wait to see their Darling By Nick Creely A strong mindset is just as important for a footballer as having an elite set of skills - Aaron Darling has both in spades. But for the 18-year-old draft prospect from the Crib Point Football Club, an unfortunate training accident has resulted in him having to face up to the likelihood he won’t play any football in 2017 a bitter pill to swallow. The Dandenong Stingrays product and AFL Academy member, who played 16-games last season as a bottom-ager in the TAC Cup, cruelly tore his ACL while doing a routine drill at training while with the Rays late last year. He showed some exciting traits in his 2016 campaign, with his performance against Gippsland Power last year, in which he used his class to gather 21 disposals, highly impressive. Prodigiously talented as a small-forward, Darling is seen as one of the country’s brightest prospects, but understands there is still a significantly long road ahead for him to be even back on the park doing what he does best. “The knee’s getting there, it’s obviously a pretty long process, but it’s doing well - I’m just working on getting some strength and stability back into the leg before I start running again,” he told the Journal. “I’ve got to give the graft in my knee a full twelve-months to heal and I’ll take the full-time and come back next pre-season ready to go - I’m not rushing back, I want to get back to my peak. “I can only prepare for what I can control, so I can hope for the best really in terms of the draft - at this stage I can’t play this year so it’ll be hard to show the recruiters what I can do, so I’m just focusing on getting the body right and looking to go back as a 19-year-old at the Stingrays.” But through the despair and loneliness that sometimes accompanies an injury that so many footballers have to overcome, Darling sees a silver-lining. “I’m pretty fortunate I have a good mindset with injuries so I feel I’ve coped pretty well with it - I’ve been focusing on more of a coaching role with the Stingrays to pretty much improve myself as well - I feel like I understand footy a bit more, and that coaching and tactical side to it,” he explained. “I see it as an opportunity to get bigger and stronger and to be a better footballer in the longrun - we’ll see what happens but I’m positive that this will benefit me.” Darling said that his involvement as a member of the AFL Academy has drastically helped ramp up his recovery. “The AFL Academy has been great - especially doing the knee, they have just been a big part of my rehab so far - it’s awesome to be able to call someone up whenever and talk about it, and just to be able to learn off them is great,” he said. “There are some great people there, no doubt.” As part of Darling’s involvement as one of 36 prospective draftees in the academy, he jetted off to Florida to take part in the high-performance

And his surname is already known within AFL circles, with his cousin Jack playing for the West Coast Eagles. The older Darling, who has played 128 games for the Eagles, and kicked 228 goals, has been a major influence on his younger namesake’s career to date.
“I haven’t spoken to Jack a whole lot about the knee - when I first did it, he just said to be elite with the rehab and that’ll take you far,” he said. “But he’s been great and is a big influence on me in my footy for sure.” Darling’s Stingrays kick off their TAC Cup season on Saturday March 25 against Gippsland Power in Morwell.
Redlegs return to their roots By Nicholas Creely The Dandenong Redlegs are embarking on a new era, looking to right the wrongs of the past and move forward with a fresh new look. In the previous five years the Redlegs have finished 11th, 11th, 8th, 2nd and 7th, with only one finals appearance in this time. In comes a fresh-looking executive committee, led by club veteran Michael Lawrence, with the club securing Nathan Boyd to coach the senior side in 2017. Boyd has worked in the Geelong District Football League as coach of Corio, and brings a wealth of knowledge from many different clubs. Adding to this, they have unveiled their new jumper - the predominant navy-blue finally returns to the club, with the whitejumpers to be shelved permanently. The club has also announced Ash Richmond as the new netball senior coach - with over 25-years of experience playing netball, both on a social level and at a significantly higher level, Richmond adds some vital experience to a Redlegs team looking to go all the way. It is his first gig as a senior netball coach after previous stints as a specialist coach, while he has also represented Victoria in both men’s and mixed reserve teams. And just last week, the Redlegs finalised their football leadership group for the upcoming season on social media, with Regan Hall and Trent Cole set to lead the club. Boyd said both are natural leaders, but both excellent players who will bring some great energy to the group this season. “Regan brings a very smart football brain alongside high respect from the playing group, supporters and the wider league alike,” he said. “Reg is a passionate club person and we are all proud to see him leading the way again in 2017. “Trent has driven performances on the training track and lead by example over the pre-season. He’s always being the first and last at the club and as a player. Trent is a prolific ball winner and will bring a lot of leadership by example and training and match days.“ Other Redlegs’ leaders for the 2017 season are Jayke Hopkins (Vice Captain), Phillip Brown , Xavier Pauli and Dave Vassallo. The club has brought in a slab of new players, with both Andrew Sloss and David Vasallo joining the club from Moorabbin. The Redlegs open up their 2017 campaign with a match against the strong Ashwood side on April 8 at Essex Heights Reserve.
Ashley has the cricketing world at his feet By David Nagel IT is remarkable to think that at just 15 years of age Ashley Chandrasinghe will be chasing his second national title when he lines up for Victoria in Brisbane next week. The Narre Warren South left-hander has been chosen to represent his state at the School Sports Australia 15 and Under Cricket Championships taking on the best from around the country in the hunt for the Ricky Ponting Cup. But for Ashley -he won’t be overly anxious because he’s been there and done it all before. He was first selected for Victoria as a 10-yearold cricketing prodigy, travelling to South Australia for the Under-12 Championships in December 2012. By that stage of his fledgling career he had already captained a Dandenong and District Cricket Association (DDCA) representative side after successfully modelling his style on fellow lefthanders Mike Hussey and Kumar Sangakkara. 34 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 20 March, 2017
“I just like to watch how they play and what they do at the crease,” Ashley said. “Just like them I like to graft early, occupy the crease, but if the bad ball is there you need to deal with it.” Ashley showed promising signs in that first carnival, scoring a match-winning 16 not out under enormous pressure against Northern Territory. But it was at his second carnival in Bendigo in January 2014 where he really made his mark. He batted three times, with scores of 39 (Northern Territory), 57 not out (South Australia) and 29 (New South Wales) helping the Vics to become Under-12 champions. “I still get nervous but I guess I’ve had the opportunity to learn a few things from those previous championships and hopefully that will give me an advantage in Brisbane,” he said. Alex will head into the championships primed for a big performance after a solid and very busy season of cricket.
He plays for Buckley Ridges in the DDCA junior competition, taking on his first club Berwick Springs in the weekend’s Under-17 (1) grand final. He had made 411 runs at an average of 82.2 heading into the season decider despite still being eligible for the under-15s. He also plies his trade for Vic Premier club Casey-South Melbourne, opening the batting in the very competitive third’s competition. “Playing premier cricket has been a great learning experience, just preparing with that level of cricketer has really helped with my attitude to the game,” he said. Ashley wanted to thank god for everything he has given him, his parents Ajith and Hashanthi and his sister Jessica for their ongoing support, batting coach Owen Mottau, Casey-South Melbourne and every other club he has played for over his brief but exciting journey.

Jimmy Newob’s career set for a Launching Pad The exciting Jimmy Newob is Launching Pad bound following his emphatic win at Sandown Park on Thursday. After an impressive heat win on Sunday, all eyes were on Jimmy Newob in the restricted win final. He exploded out of box 7 and in no time set up a seven length lead mid-race, he maintained the break and went on to win in 29.57 - the fastest time of the night. “He can jump but he hasn’t been doing it all the time,” said co-trainer Melissa Fullerton postrace. “He did it tonight and gave himself that clean cross to the rail that he needed. Once he got to the front I was confident they weren’t going to run him down.” The win was Jimmy Newob’s fifth from seven career starts and along the way he has caught the eye of many greyhound experts with his owners having knocked back multiple offers. “There’s a big team of owners - they bought two dogs from New South Wales and he was one of them,” Fullerton said

At the final hurdle the Dandenong Rangers have failed to deliver with the Sydney Uni Flames claiming the WNBL title on Friday night. In front of their home crowd, the Rangers were uncharacteristically sloppy despite starting like a house on fire, eventually going down 75-62. Trying to force the grand final into a third game on Sunday, the signs were strong early as the Rangers skipped out to 22-11 lead at the firstbreak. But the Flames tightened up defensively and became irresistible at the three-point-line, and started to wrestle back control despite the deafening noise produced from the crowd. It then culminated in over two-quarters of dominance from the Flames, with the Rangers unable to find an answer. By the start of the last-term, in which the Flames opened up a 12-point buffer, the fizz in the game faded away, with the Rangers bravely fighting it out to the end despite the inevitable loss. Leliani Mitchell was the outstanding force throughout the grand final series, taking out the Rachel Sporn Medal for the MVP, but it was Belinda Snell (15 points and 11 rebounds) who stole the show with a truly dominant display. Steph Cumming (17 points) and Sara Blicavs (10 points and six rebounds) both ended their respective season’s on a high. Retiring legend Jacinta Kennedy did all she could to drag her team over the line with 9 points and two assists, and paid tribute to the club immediately after the game. “It’s definitely not the way we wanted to end the year, but I could not be prouder to be part of this team, to be playing alongside the girls and for the coaching staff - I fully believe that this group can go one step further next year, and I’ll be here cheering every step of the way,” she said.
