money to our centre, or any centre, we know that because they gave us new money, and they gave that directly,” he added. Yarra Ranges Council will write to the Australian Attorney-General George Brandis, Tony Smith MP, and La Trobe MP Jason Wood, requesting that the Federal Government commit funding on an ongoing basis to support the Yarra Ranges Community Legal Centre.

“It does help in Yarra Ranges, but it is also for a specific program.” He said Tony Smith’s response ignored the overall cut to community legal centre funding. “Cutting 30 per cent off the funding to Victoria, over $3 million, it’s a bit rough for federal MPs to then ask the state to make a decision on what they have left to give out,” he said. “There’s no reason why the Federal Government could not give more

Funding was cut in 2014 and reinstated in 2015 after MP Tony Smith lobbied his government for the funding. In response to the current threat, Tony Smith said in addition to the $400,000 rescue back then, $350,000 had been funded to ECLC under the Women’s Safety Package. ECLC CEO Michael Smith acknowledged the $350,000 funding, but said it was not specific to the Yarra Ranges operation, but for the entire ECLC.

He said although very small in terms of manpower, the centre’s contribution was huge. “In a legal system that many of our vulnerable people just can’t afford, they can go to this organisation and be helped with their concerns,” he said. In the past two and a half years the part-time centre had supported over 500 clients, provided around 600 legal advices and reached a further 530 people through community legal education.

“It’s bloody hard to run this service as it is, without standing around two months out wondering whether you have enough money to keep operating what is an absolutely critical service.” Cr Fiona McAllister received unanimous support from councillors at the Yarra Ranges Council meeting on Tuesday 14 March for an urgent motion to secure ongoing funding, for the Yarra Ranges Community Legal Centre. The legal provides a range of legal services at Healesville and through outreach services at Yarra Junction and Lilydale. Eastern Community Legal Centre which operates the Yarra Ranges service has flagged that a Federal Government cut of 30 per cent to the sector, over $3 million in Victoria, places the extended service at risk. The State Government has also weighed in with Attorney-General Martin Pakula urging the Commonwealth last week to reverse what he labelled a “cruel decision”. The cuts take effect in July, but Federal MP for Casey, Tony Smith, has told the Mail that under a new federalstate agreement, it is the State Government that determines the level of funding for each community legal centre. He said under the agreement, the Federal Government was not able to direct funding to specific community legal centres. Cr McAllister said the cuts would equate to around $250,000 to ECLC with the Yarra Ranges most likely to suffer. “It’s not certain ... it’s all a bit up in the air at the moment in terms of funding, but it’s looking like it will have significant impact and put into question their ability to continue funding Healesville,” she said. “I’m asking, once again, that we run an advocacy campaign and get funding certainty.” Cr Jim Child spoke of the benefit to residents of the Upper Yarra communities, saying he experienced on a weekly basis the need for what he said was an extremely valuable service for vulnerable people in the community.

“We are awash with art in the Yarra Valley.” Artist and gallery owner, Reggie Clarke opened the 2017 Yarra Glen Arts Show on Friday, 10 March, with an enthusiastic rundown of the plethora of art events coming up in the Yarra Valley of which the art show was an exciting start. The biennial show filled the Yarra Glen Memorial Hall with hundreds of artworks in genres that ranged from realist to impressionist and contemporary abstract to traditional landscape. Show co-ordinator Debra Traill said the show offerd new, emerging and experienced artists, sculptors, textilers and, for the first time, photographers, with an opportunity to showcase their works, and to sell them. Yarra Ranges Councillor Tony Stevenson also spoke, saying the Yarra Ranges had a vibrant arts community supported by the council, artists and community members. He said the Yarra Glen Arts Show was full of the community spirit that strengthened connection to community. Sculptures made by students from local primary schools were displayed in local shops

Judges Margaret McLoughlin and Raelene Sharp spoke of the quality of the work, saying their task as judges was a huge challenge. “There were so many standouts,” Ms McLoughlin said. “We really had to find that something other, where artists had gone out of their comfort zone in making our final decision.”

Brett Medson and Steve Pierrehumbert joined forces over 3 years ago after a huge need was found in the food industry, Right across the food industry it is regulation that food temperatures need to be recorded each day and what happens when your having a day off ? or a fridge breaks down ? This was the challenge that Brett and Steve decided to overcome. After 3 years of research and development they have produced the Sentry Temperature Monitoring System, designed and built in Australia, The system is so good it is HACCP approved and is trusted by many businesses in the Yarra Valley. Brett says “the system emails all the paperwork for compliance each day as well as it notifies you by SMS should a fridge or freezer go out of a preset range”. The systems are currently installed in Restaurants, Butchers, Hotels, Wineries, Abattoirs across Victoria and now moving further afield into other states and New Zealand. Town path to solar By Kath Gannaway Yarra Glen is edging its way towards a community-owned solar project with a workshop to be held on Saturday, 25 March. The workshop, from 1pm to 4.30pm, will explore how a Community-Owned Solar project could work in the town. The project has come from a recommendation of the Yarra Glen People’s Panel that 10 per cent of the proceeds from the sale of council-owned land in Bell Street (the former maternal health centre site) be allocated to a renewable energy project. Taryn Lane, consultant with Embark Australia Community Renewable Energy will facilitate the discussion on how the proposed project could work, drawing on best practice examples of community-owner renewable energy schemes from around Australia. Ms Lane recently attended the Coalition for Community Energy Congress, with four Yarra Glen residents ahead of the community meeting. The group came away with a range of ideas and tools as well as a power of knowledge based on the first-hand experiences of others who have already gone down the community-owned solar track. John Stalwell said it was good to see what was possible. “That’s why we were there, just to be aware of what could be done, what the requirements were, what

Briefly Keeping the car door locked At 7.30pm on 18 March, a vehicle parked on Badger Creek Road, adjacent to Queens Park had items stolen from it. The victim had gone into the park with her children. Upon return she found that her purse, camera and various other personal property items to the value of $1221 had been stolen. Healesville Sergeant Mark Thompson said the back seat had not been locked and urged people to double-check car doors to deter opportunists who often tried car doors. “The victim had unknowingly left the rear car doors open after her children had gotten out, he said. “it’s just another reminder that the safest place for personal property is with you, or if you can’t take it with you double-check to make sure all your car doors are locked." Anyone with information is urged to contact Healesville Police on 5962 4422.

Other options were a long-term goal of a micro-grid. She said she was heartened by the fact that people in Yarra Glen voted for a solar project. “I think there’s great potential for solar in the Yarra Valley, she said. The Community Solar Energy Workshop is a further opportunity for Yarra Glen community members to get involved in the project and have a say. Ms Lane said she was pleased to

be involved. “I am very pleased to be able to work with the Yarra Glen community on this exciting project and to help develop a project scope that matches the interests, skills and energy of participants in the town, she said. Yarra Glen community members can register for the workshop by emailing Jess Adams at j.adams@ yarraranges.vic.gov.au, or phone 9294 6866.

Park repaired, restored to the people By Derek Schlennstedt Popular Yarra Ranges picnic area, Donnelly’s Weir, has re-opened to the public following months of clean-up work after last year’s severe storms. The storms which affected the Yarra Ranges in October 2016 brought heavy rain and strong winds that brought down a number of trees and destroyed Donnelly’s Weir picnic shelter. Badger Weir and Maroondah Reservoir were also among those affected by the storms which saw 120km/h winds batter the Yarra Valley. Both Maroondah Reservoir and Donnelly’s have since re-opened; Badger Weir still remains closed to the public and was one of the hardest hit by the storms. Parks Victoria Area Chief Ranger Yarra Ranges, Conrad Annal, met with the Mail on 15 March to show the extensive work that had been required to re-open Donnelly’s picnic area. Visiting the site, five months after the storms, visible signs still remain. The picnic shelter which was destroyed by a tree and was unable to be recovered has since been removed, with plans to replace it in the future. Sections of the fence also require replacing, with temporary safety barrier mesh set up.

Yarra Ranges Chief Ranger, Conrad Annal welcomes visitors back to the recently reopened Donnelly's Weir picnic area. 166162 Picture: DEREK SCHLENNSTEDT Mr Annal said that the clean-up work had been extensive, with excavators and crews working to remove hundreds of fallen trees both along the road leading to Donnelly’s and at the picnic area. “The storms last year caused significant damage and it has taken months of hard work to assess sites and carry out work to clear debris and re-open tracks, he said. “Large excavators were used to remove stumps and help with the removal of the shelter, chainsaw crews and bobcats were utilised to remove many of the trees which had fallen over the access roads,

“Then we also had to fill in root and stump holes and level it off, he said. Luckily the bridge and the weir were both unharmed by the storm and the relaxing and peaceful location is now open for visitors to come and enjoy. The majority of the facilities still remain and despite the removal of the shelter there are still picnic tables, toilets and barbecues for visitors to utilise. Several tracks leading off from Donnelly’s have also been cleared of debris and re-opened. Condon's walking track, Mount St Leonard track, and the walking track between Maroondah Reservoir and Donnelly’s Weir via the Maroondah Dam Wall are among those which have been re-opened. Popular walking spot Morley's track between Fernshaw and Dom Dom Saddle has also been opened. Mr Annal said that Parks Victoria was pleased to re-open Donnelly’s Weir picnic area and the tracks surrounding it and thanked the community for its patience during the clean-up. “After months of hard work it’s great to welcome visitors back to Donnelly’s Weir. It’s a popular picnic spot and a unique community asset, he said.

Following several cases of number plates being stolen in the region, Healesville Police are urging people to use security screws to fasten plates. Between 2pm on 15 March and 10am on 16 March the front and rear number plats were stolen from a Holden Commodore in Bradshaw Drive, Healesville. It's an extremely prevalent crime in the region and Healesville's Sergeant Mark Thompson is warning that people should fasten their number plates with one-way screws, which can be picked up at the local police station. “Once stolen the number plates are generally fastened to another car, and can cause all sorts of headaches for the owners, he said. “We urge people to remain vigilant and protect the identity of their car to stop any headaches for themselves by using security screws, which you can pick up at your local police station. He offers that if anyone needs any assistance in relation to safety or security of their property, they're welcome to contact Healesville Police station on 5962 4422.

Vicroads vehicle stolen Police are searching for two women who were allegedly involved in stealing a VicRoads vehicle on Thursday 16 March. Around 2.45pm, a female offender smashed a window and stole a set of service logs from a car parked at the rear of the shops on Bell Street, Yarra Glen. The owner of the vehicle returned to find the offender still rummaging through her car. When confronted, the offender ran and jumped into a small white late model hatch believed to be a Hyundai Elantra, driven by a female accomplice. The offenders then fled along the HealesvilleYarra Glen Road on the Yarra Glen Bypass, and stole a VicRoads white Ford Territory, number plate MCY-467. The vehicle belonged to a VicRoads worker who had been momentarily out of his vehicle. Yarra Glen Sergeant Richard Coulson said the white Hyundai was also likely stolen, and the partial registration number of the plates affixed to the vehicle was 1BP. The VicRoads vehicle has distinctive roof mounted orange flashing lights. Both alleged offenders, in black clothing, were in their early twenties, and had black hair. Yarra Glen police Sergeant Richard Coulson is urging anyone with any information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Yarra Glen Police on 9730 1296.

Angus moves freely By Derek Schlennstedt Hoddles Creek Primary School student Angus is enjoying a new sense of independence at school. The primary school recently received funding from the Department of Education and Training to improve wheelchair access throughout the grounds for Angus who has cerebral palsy. School principal, Ben Zimmerle, said that prior to the ramps the school grounds were quite challenging for Angus to get around in his wheelchair, and he would often require assistance from a teacher. “The school grounds were quite hard and complex for Angus to navigate before the implementation of the ramps, and he would often need assistance from an adult in order to get over ledges and down stairs,” Mr Zimmerle said. The construction of the ramp facilities has meant Angus, who is in Grade 1, can now independently traverse the school grounds and play

with his friends. “He’s absolutely thrilled; the ramps mean he can travel around the school yard with relative ease,“ Mr Zimmerle said. “It’s given him independence and the ability to play with his friends, and he can now follow them throughout the school yard." The funding has allowed the school to build five major ramps, including to the basketball court and the oval, previously the most difficult for Angus to access, and an edible garden which also provides for wheelchair access. The ramps, built by commercial builders John Lyngs give the school the ability to cater for students who require wheelchair access and more. Angus is of course overjoyed with the new ramps which have given him independence and the capacity to play with his friends. “I like them, they’re excellent," he said. “I can get everywhere!“

Quad bikes accidents on the rise Death and injury from quad bike accidents are increasing on farms, prompting a call for a review of safety measures. The Rural Doctors Association of Australia (RDAA) is backing a call by the National Farming Federation for a fivestar safety rating system. The NFF estimates there are 200,000 quad bikes on rural properties in Australia. RDAA president Dr Ewen McPhee said quad bikes were one of the leading causes of on-farm fatalities in Australia. He said that in 2015 and 2016 quad bikes accounted for the highest number of farm death and injuries overall. “Currently, there is conflicting information available to farmers when purchasing their quad bikes as to the effectiveness, and even safety of protection items such as crush protection devices (CPDs),” he said. “Much of this information is provided by the manufacturers, and there is currently no independent information provided on safety when buying a quad bike. “As rural doctors, we see the devastation caused by the death or serious injury to the families and communities affected by on-farm accidents. “Too many of these deaths are of children, and their parents did not have a sufficient understanding of the level of risk involved in allowing them to operate quad bikes. “There is no such thing as a child appropriate quad,” Dr McPhee said. “We wholeheartedly support the NFF’s call for a safety rating system, to allow consumers to make informed buying decisions and to protect themselves and their loved ones”

So later in the day, ring Telstra - on mobile of course (landline also inoperable, first time ever), half an hour on hold, give up, try again next day, get through, spend more than an hour to be promised action in four days’ time. No internet or landline for one week; lucky we’re not a business. ‘Dunno’ about being sold a pup,

How I love living in Healesville. This was brought home to me today on Tuesday, 14 March. I was driving through the car park at the rear of the Post Office when I swerved to avoid an elderly lady crossing from the parked cars. In doing so, my front right-hand tyre struck the bluestone wall and my tyre and wheel were punctured etc. I did not have my phone on me but the lovely young lady who works at the coffee shop next to the Bendigo Bank, and other people came to my aid. The first young lady used her phone and rang the RACV and said she would pop back later to check on me, which she did, bringing me a paper cup and a bottle of water. It was pretty hot out there. I wish to thank her, and other people who asked about my welfare. Even a lovely young man with his wife and baby who immediately stopped and said he would gladly change the tyre for me. Many thanks to all the passers-by who stopped. Yes, I do love living in this lovely town as all the people are so special. Val James, Healesville.

lent assaults. There can be no doubt these are topics that have received extensive media coverage lately and they are of concern to most citizens around the state. Unfortunately, Ms McLeish (and presumably her party) has fallen into the simplistic and overworked trap of assuming these problems are primarily issues about ‘crime and punishment’. As a consequence, she (and her party) is recommending the inevitable, well-tried (and discredited) solution of ‘lock them up and throw away the key’. She begins her column with a dramatic presentation of the fears and drastic measures being taken by some of her constituents to the problems under discussion. Unfortunately, this approach only serves to increase the fear and uncertainty that exists around these issues. Might I suggest that she would do very much better to first allay the fears of her constituents by re-framing how these issues are debated, both in the community and by our politicians. Being ‘tough on crime’ has never been a successful approach when inadequate attention is paid to the causes of crime. In fact, the present ‘crisis’ is largely the result of previous unenlightened approaches to the problem. I would much prefer to hear her offer some solutions focused on prevention of crime and on workable rehabilitation of young offenders currently caught up in the slow-moving and overworked judicial system. It is largely the underlying social conditions and lack of support services in critical areas that is causing the problems that we see. No amount of punishment will ever

As a volunteer at the information centre in Healesville for around 10 years, it’s a sad time to see the centre closing in June. But - due to the decline of visitors over the years, online bookings and also a lack of volunteers - it has to be. However, it would be wonderful if the historical society could take over the courthouse, as there’s so much history there. Also, so many tourists ask about the history of Healesville and the Aboriginal history, which, unless you go to the Sanctuary, there’s no information at all about their past. So let’s hope something is done to keep our history and not another coffee shop put in there, as Healesville has more coffee shops than Melbourne, I’m sure. Victor y song By Derek Schlennstedt Last Wednesday over 130 Red Cross members celebrated Dame Nellie Melba's support for the Red Cross during WWI at her Yarra Valley home, Coombe. The members carried on a legacy that started over 100 years ago when Dame Nellie Melba was singing to raise money for the Red Cross, who were supporting the war effort. In remembrance and celebration of the support Dame Nellie Melba gave the organisation, Red Cross invited members to join them for lunch at Coombe. Members from across the state attended coming from Bairnsdale, Metung, Geelong, Euroa, Bacchus Marsh, the Yarra Valley and the Melbourne suburbs. Jennifer Seabrook, member of the Hoddles Creek Red Cross Branch says it would have been an incredible achievement for Red Cross to have someone such as Dame Nellie Melba supporting their cause. “Dame Nellie was the first president of the Lilydale branch, which is still going strong today. “that would be like having a world superstar like Adele as the president of a local branch, it’s hard to believe,” she said. She says that while many women were knitting socks for soldiers, Dame Nellie Melba lent her voice instead, and helped raise around 100,000 pounds. “Dame Nellie was a self-confessed terrible knitter and sewer, so while many women were knitting socks for soldiers she sang in concert

On 13 August 1914 the Australian Red Cross began in Melbourne and on the same day, a branch was formed in Lilydale with Dame Nellie Melba as president. Dame Nellie devoted nearly five years to raising funds for the Red Cross and war effort - chiefly in Australia, but also traveling to New Zealand, Canada and America The lunch held at Coombe helped to raise $2080 for the Red Cross and Anne Macarthur, chairman of the ARC Victorian Board said it was a fantastic day for the volunteers.

Fire ban period ends By Derek Schlennstedt Fire restrictions in the Yarra Ranges finished on Monday 20 March. The decision came as a result of milder conditions and regular rainfall over summer which kept vegetation green and reduced the likelihood of fires starting and spreading. CFA operations manager Dave Renkin has said that the rainfall in early 2017 had resulted in a significant amount of vegetation growth - this, he said, translated into more private burn-offs in the coming weeks as landowners would now be able to reduce the amount of growth that had taken place over summer. He urged that people who would be burning off check conditions and register their burn-offs to ensure local fire brigades weren’t called out to false alarm calls. “Every year our brigades get more and more frustrated at the number of false alarm calls they have to respond to as a result of people not doing the right thing,” he said. “Be aware that any calls to triple-zero about smoke in the air at particular locations are crosschecked with the burn-off register. When nothing is listed firefighters are required to attend. “Calls to unregistered burn-offs take volunteer firefighters away from workplaces, families and potentially genuine emergencies.” Landowners intent to burn off are being urged to register with the Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority (ESTA) by calling 1800 668 511 or emailing burnoffs@esta.vic.gov.au

Fire restrictions in the Yarra Ranges are set to finish at 1am on 20 March. 166225 Picture: KATH GANNAWAY Mr Renkin says that registering is easy and people should be prepared to answer some simple questions about the location, size and date of the intended burn. “The burn-off line is very easy to use - the operators are friendly, and prompt you by asking key questions,” he said. Acting CFA operations manager Tim Holland said that even though restrictions were ending, there was still the potential for fires to spread and that landowners should take care when burning off. “If you are burning off make sure that the area where you are burning off is cleared of any bush or debris that could catch alight ... and most importantly monitor and check wind directions,” he said.

A crossing into the future By Kath Gannaway Yarra Ranges residents, including school principals, parents and teachers, are being asked to help shape the future of school crossings in the shire. The crossing supervisor program is undergoing its first review in 30 years over the next two months. Yarra Ranges Council’s executive officer for emergency management and community safety Corrine Bowen said the school crossing program had experienced significant changes in pedestrian usage, the enhancement of road infrastructure standards, issues with attracting and retaining crossing supervisors and staffing isolated crossings. “The review is to determine how the program can meet the future needs of the Yarra Ranges community,” Ms Bowen said.

Big impact By Kath Gannaway Yarra Valley Smaller Wineries (YVSW) are punching above their weight in two categories - events that celebrate what smaller wineries have to offer, and support for local emergency services. With the Woori Yallock Bendigo Community Bank as their major Shedfest sponsor, YVSW has handed out over $40,000 over the past 15 years, including $2400 from last year’s event presented on Tuesday, 17 March, to Upper Yarra SES. Community Bank Chairman, Peter Cownley said the bank was proud to be part of Shedfest. “The sponsorship each year is about supporting these smaller wineries and making the event happen in the valley, including at wineries from Yarra Glen and Dixons Creek, through to Healesville and along the Warburton Highway,” Mr Cownley said. “To have this amount left over to go to the Upper Yarra SES in this case, is a great outcome.” SES volunteer Merill Brunt thanked the bank and the YVSW saying the donation was a tremen-

dous boost to the volunteer unit, which covers a huge area in the Upper Yarra region. “It will help a great deal with our fund-raising which goes towards new vehicles and everything we need to run an efficient unit,” she said. Shedfest will be back later this year, but YVSM President, Tim Cullen, said the group’s immediate focus was preparing for their longestrunning festival, the Shortest Lunch on 24 and 25 June. “The Shortest Lunch is our way of celebrating the shortest weekend of the year, the winter solstice, in a relaxed, family-oriented weekend of progressive, all-day dining to ward off those winter chills,” Mr Cullen said. The combined proceeds from the two events over the 19 years has amounted to over $65,000 for local emergency services. “We would love to have people join us on 24 and 25 June as we share the big things that are happening in the Yarra Valley’s smaller wineries,” he said. This Friday 24 March, Upper Yarra families are invited to grab a picnic blanket and sit under the stars to enjoy a free twilight picnic at the Warburton Waterwheel’s Outdoor Space. With plenty of entertainment, activities and food, the night is a family-free event where you can meet other families and find out about local services and schools. The picnic, supported by the Yarra Ranges Council Linking Learning program and the Let’s Talk about Warby Project highlights the importance of supporting parents and children in the region and providing families with access to local services and information. The Linking Learning program focuses on supporting parents and carers to sing, talk and play every day with their young children and the “Let’s Talk about Warby” project aims to improve outcomes for young children in the Upper Yarra area. O’Shannassy Ward councillor, Jim Child said the picnic would be a chance for both new and existing residents to meet other families, as well as get to know their local services and schools. “For parents starting out in a new area, it can be hard to know where to go and who to call for services,” Cr Child said. “The waterwheel is an icon in the town, and a go-to for residents and visitors who want to know what’s happening in Warburton. Strong communities are made of strong networks and this picnic is the perfect chance to build those connections and get introduced to the town.” Families can expect a puppet show, magician performance, as well as face painting and numerous other children’s activities. There’s plenty to eat too, with a free barbecue,

‘Best smile’ was definitely the hardest category to judge in the inaugural Healesville Dog’s Day Out last year ... every dog had a smile, and every owner! The Rotary Club of Healesville is taking the lead again with the 2017 Healesville Dog’s Day Out set for Sunday, 26 March in a new location, the leafy Coronation Park in River Street (behind the bowling club). Every type of dog, and owner, was represented last year, getting the show off to a great start. Pooches from companion dogs and guardians to workmates, pets, guides, rescue dogs and entertainers, strutted their stuff for the judges, and the Rotary Club is hoping for an even bigger turn-out this year. With 18 fun events including ‘Longest tail’, ‘Man and his dog’, ‘Best smile’ and ‘Best six legs’, there is plenty of scope for every man, woman and child ... and their dog. The judging panel will include local vet, Brett Chester, Healesville Bendigo Bank representative Jenny McKinnon and sponsors. Lorraine and Terry O’Dell’s

magnificent Leonberger, Phoenix, will be there again, keen to select the winner of the Grand Parade, scheduled for lunchtime and there will be demonstrations of training and skills by Healesville and District Dogs Club during the lunch break. There will be a great selection of food stalls and treats for man and beast with several canine-related stalls.

Registration is from 10am, with events running from 11am to 3pm. Rotary spokesman Don Macdonald said the club, with the support of local traders and businesses, is pleased to again be putting on a show that recognises the part dogs play in our lives, with proceeds going to support local community groups.

Hear the roar of King Kong

Movies at Healesville and Warburton The Memo, Healesville

Jumping for joy to be part of the show. 166242

The second film in Legendary Pictures’ 'Monsterverse’ franchise, Kong: Skull Island is an enthralling and very well-written monster movie. In 1973, a governmentfunded expedition journeys to Skull Island to search for ancient monsters, and encounters Kong, the fearsome guardian of the island. Styled like Apocalypse Now with a giant ape, Kong: Skull Island is a blockbuster film of impressive depth and efficiency. Through only a few mo-

ments of natural, confident performance, you instantly feel acquainted with the characters. The pacing is quick and steady, presenting clear objectives and threats without the information being spoon-fed to us, and the film’s tone is grim and perilous - much like Kong himself - but still maintains a sense of primordial grandeur and mystery. The stand-out actors are Brie Larson (as an assertive photographer), John C. Reilly and Samuel L. Jackson. Reilly, as a wacky US fighter pilot stranded on the island since 1944, is the ostensible comic relief, but is still allowed

many poignantly touching and badass warrior moments, and Jackson is a deeply compelling antagonist as Lieutenant-Colonel Packard, a military man with a personal vendetta against Kong. While 2014’s Godzilla was tense and engaging, many fans justifiably complained about the title monster’s very limited screentime. There’s no such problem here: Kong is a prominent and terrifying presence, driving several incredibly powerful, gutwrenching action scenes. Kong: Skull Island is a monster movie of rare intelligence and character complexity. - Seth Lukas Hynes

Burras toast of the town By Chris Anderson YVCA How many times have we moaned the lack of a great grand final, when we have the best two teams pitted against each other, only to have one side dominate the contest. For the senior grades in the Yarra Valley Cricket Association, the first box was ticked last week when the best two teams in each grade won through their semi-finals. These teams delivered five classic grand finals in which all teams had their chances across the weekend. In DJ Strachan Shield, WarburtonMillgrove are the toast of the town as they outlasted a gallant Mount Evelyn in a riveting contest between bat and ball. Mount Evelyn won the toss on Saturday and didn’t hesitate in batting in brilliant conditions. After a positive start, the Mounters lost a glut of wickets when Burras captain Daniel Lever entered the attack. When brother David disturbed Daniel Fraser’s furniture, Mount Evelyn had slumped to be 4/61. From there, it was a battle of will between the Burras’ trio of bowlers - Michael Walker (2/54), David Lever (4/71) and Daniel Lever (3/73) against the explosive power of Mount Evelyn captain Kane Jones. Jones found some handy allies in brother Luke and Jesse Fraser, and a pair of handy partnerships grew. This not only resurrected the innings, but put it in a position to attack a healthy total. Jones was brilliant in his attack on the Warburton-Millgrove bowlers, showing enough respect for the good balls, riding his luck at times, and brutally attacking anything loose. Unfortunately for Jones and his team, he fell short of a well-deserved century losing his wicket to Walker on 91, and fell within sight of a dash to the finish-line. Some lusty blows from the Mounters’ tail was accompanied by regular wickets to David Lever, and the innings was closed nine overs short of stumps with the score on 201. Entering day two, the game was well and truly in the balance. The total of 201 was more than competitive, but by no means insurmountable. The Mounters raced out of the blocks on day two, and Jones’ day one innings didn’t seem to slow him down as he shot his team off to the perfect start, with a couple of wickets, he had had reduced the Burras to 3/10. Jones was in irresistible form with the ball, and a couple of missed chances could have well had the Burras further in trouble. The required some resistance of the highest quality, and this emerged through the union between Liam Barnard and a Tim McKail. The pair survived some nervous moments early on, and the longer they stayed at the wicket, the more comfortable they became. Barnard cautious defence was well matched by some lusty strikes from the blade of McKail. The pair managed to firstly negate the energy the fielding team had gained from the early wickets, then they pro-

Luke Jones of Mount Evelyn is a picture of technique. 166293 ceeded to safely guide their team to the tea interval. In the process, they slowly raised the scoring rate. With the game in the balance, Mount Evelyn were desperate for the breakthrough, but Barnard and McKail would not be deterred in their quest to see their team home. McKail registered a magnificent maiden A Grade century as he just beat down the Mount Evelyn bowlers and fielders as they had no answer to his brilliance. Mount Evelyn were able to get some joy in the run home as spinner Jed Thompson lured Barnard out of his crease and Jesse Fraser completed a neat stumping with Barnard falling for 49. With the fourth wicket falling at 162, after a magnificent 152-run partnership, the door was still ajar for the Mounters to strike, but they had spent all their petrol tickets. McKail, and club legend Mick Walker, were then left to fittingly see their team home to a memorable victory with 10 overs to spare. The win confirmed WarburtonMillgrove’s status as the best team in the competition this season. A long batting line-up, backed up by a miserly attack, added up to premiership glory.

In RA Finger Trophy, the best two teams of the past two seasons, Gruyere District and Coldstream, were again in the thick of the action come the last weekend of the season. Gruyere District batted first and found the going tough against a disciplined Coldstream attack. Mitchell Hodgetts (38) and Adam Waixel (23) did their best to give the Scorpions a decent score to defend, but regular wickets to the Crocs meant that a decent partnership was hard to come by. Young gun Daniel Whelan (5/43) was again impressive in leading the Crocs attack while he was well supported by Ben Walsh (3/34). When day one was all said and done, the Scorpions were bowled out for 149, a defendable total, but one that looked a little light on. Gruyere District would need to rely on regular wickets from their star bowlers, Ronan Prouse and Matt Tilney if they were to dent Coldstream’s powerful top order. Regular wickets did come, but so did regular runs. Stephen Phillips (52) looked as if he was going to lead his side to backto-back flags; and with the score on 5/118, the Crocs looked to have one hand on the trophy. In a brilliant rear guard action,

Rowan Prouse (5/47), who has been in exceptional form in the latter part of the season, and the experienced Matt Tilney (3/36), led their team to a remarkable seven-run victory to atone for the disappointment of 2015-16. In C Grade, Wandin battled to post a score in a war of attrition with Mount Evelyn’s spinners. Wandin were cautious in their approach to inform Mount Evelyn openers Trevor Williams and Reese Shepherd, but their cautious approach left them short when spinners Chris Doyle (5/33) and Robbie Wilson (3/35) entered the attack. The pair were able to stick to their plans without much challenge; and despite batting more than 60 overs, the Bulldogs were only able to post 95 when the last wicket fell. Mount Evelyn were steady in their approach on day two, but when the third wicket had fallen with the score on 40 - and the dangerous trio of Darren Westaway, Jon Williams and Chris Doyle back in the shed - then Wandin had the opportunity to strike. Fortunately for the men in maroon, seasoned campaigners Malcolm Darvell (37 not out) and Dwayne Finch (23 not out) guided their team with a steady hand to a memorable victory after many years of toil. In D Grade, Coldstream posted 140 against Wandin at Seville. The Crocs had plenty of batsmen get starts, but none were able to put the

Bulldogs truly to the sword. Daniel Trembath (3/37) led a patient and disciplined effort with the ball for Wandin, as they have given themselves a chance at premiership glory by keeping the score within reach. Wandin, led by a terrific unbeaten half century from Mathew Lanham, kept the circling Crocs at bay as regular wicket to Michael Pezzimenti (4/32) and PJ McArdle (2/34) kept the pressure on the Bulldogs. Lanham stood strong, and found enough allies to guide his team to a hard fought three wicket victory. In the One Day Grade, Powelltown and Marysville played out a classic with both teams having their share of success with the bat. Powelltown batted first and executed with excellent results. Brendan Green (40 not out) and Darcy Andrel (41 not out) were the main driving forces in Powelltown posting an impressive 4/193. Marysville would need a big effort with the bat, and their big guns delivered with Jarred Darkin (42 not out) and Chris Piggott (45 not out) leading from the front in a classic grand final. The Villains were able to outlast the Demons and passed their total inside the last five overs of the game. After years of struggle to keep their club afloat, the result was a huge reward for those who have put in the hard yards for Marysville, both on and off the field. DJ Strachan Shield Mount Evelyn 201 (K. Jones 91, Dan Fraser 34, David Lever 4/71, Daniel Lever 3/73, M. Walker 2/54) def by Warburton-Millgrove 4/203 (T. McKail 116*, L. Barnard 49, K. Jones 2/42). Burras play off for flag

End of season fun By Jamie Strudley YARRA RANGES ATHLETICS Another season of fun and friendship at Yarra Ranges Athletics finished on Saturday with a great morning of little athletics. They celebrated the achievements of the Under 15s athletes who finished their little athletics careers and hopefully move into senior team ranks where they will undoubtedly continue to flourish. Congratulations and best wishes to the Under 15s class of 2017: Jayden Clarke, Harrison Van Duuren, Oliver Duncan, Alec Peterson, Pat Keating, Zane Wheeler, Ella Strudley, Sam DiGregorio and Chelsea Thompson. The last round of athletics was highlighted by the athletes versus parents challenges, with many parents stepping up to go toe-to-toe with their children over 100m. Not many parent wins were recorded though! Those tired, defeated parents then stepped up to the tug-o-war only to be similarly walloped 3-0. Thanks to all the parent helpers and their assistance throughout the season for ensuring all the athletes had a fun, safe and enjoyable athletics experience each week. They look forward to seing you all back next summer, if not over winter for cross country. The club hosted the first ever Boost: Athletics Fast event on Saturday night. A teams event - run along similar lines to Nitro - was a fantastic success. Check out the Facebook page and website for results, stats and all the photos from a fun, but fiercely competitive, evening. Good luck to the club's athletes headed to Sydney next weekend for the Australian

WARBURTON BOWLS In their pursuit of the White Flag as the overall winner of Division 2, Warburton 1 played Elsternwick at Ringwood on Saturday in the Quarter Final and came from behind to win by 6 shots - 78 to 72 - despite only winning one rink. Rink scores: B. Woods 21/21; P. Woods 14/15; J. Brookes 32/9 and J. Van Der Zweep 11/27. A never-say-die performance as the big board was all that mattered! Sunday’s semi-final at Mount Waverley saw Warburton play Brunswick 1 in hot conditions. In another wonderful team performance, Warburton held off the opposition to win 86 to 73. Rink scores: B. Woods 16/20; P. Woods 30/16; J. Brookes 16/24 and J. Van Der Zweep 24/13. They now play off for the Division 2 White Flag against Darebin City this Saturday. Go Burras!

All Revved Up

They’ll keep you on the move By Peter Douglas With decades of experience and a fantastic new premises at their disposal, the team at Valley Central Automotive has all your needs covered. Business partners Robert Sharp and Jason Rouget have joined forces to offer the region a one-stop shop for all your car’s needs. Robert is an award-winning, former franchisee of Ultra Tune in Lilydale and Chirnside Park, while Jason is the owner/operator of Wandin Motors. Their new location includes a waiting room, TV lounge, coffee amenities and free wi-fi. They have either a courtesy vehicle ute for the tradie, or sedan for the family. Together, the trusted operators pride themselves on offering mechanical repairs, roadworthy testing, and tyres and wheel alignments. The local team isn’t afraid to go that extra mile to keep their customers satisfied, which is why they offer free pick-up and delivery within the local area. Robert said both he and Jason had worked hard to build a trusted reputation in the Yarra Valley.

“Before you agree to your ‘fixed price service’ at the dealer and make a booking, give us a call. “I am sure we’ll not disappoint you on price, and also surprise you of the personal touch your car will receive from one of our qualified mechanics, with the latest diagnostic equipment for the modern vehicle. “From a simple service light reset, to the ability to replace rear brake pads with electric handbrakes, to telling the computer it has had a battery change, we can assist. “We only use parts that meet original equipment specifications or above, which keeps your statutory new car warranty. “It is your car and your choice to have it serviced at Valley Central Automotive.” Bookings can be made through the website or Facebook page. Opening hours are Monday to Friday between 8am to 5.30pm, with Saturday by appointment. Valley Central Automotive is located at (rear) 652 Warburton Highway, Seville.
