The editor’s desk The Noosa region is familiar with body art. An annual festival, now held in Eumundi, shines a light on this brilliant and spectacular skill. This week Noosa Today reports on the collaborative effort of four talented and inspirational women that brings a whole new perspective to body art. The main players are breast cancer survivor Hayley Walker, henna artist Alicia Mireille, florist Mandy Jedovnicky and photojournalist Helga Dalla. Hayley was diagnosed with breast cancer at a young age, despite having no family history of the disease, and had to have a breast removed. Recently, she proudly posed with one of Alicia’s henna artworks across that area of her chest, with a headpiece made by Mandy, to depict the care and courage of her four-year journey. When Helga’s photo shoot of the artwork was posted online, it went viral. Let’s hope the efforts of these four women will now do wonders for breast cancer awareness and prevention. ●

Is Joint or Muscle Pain Disturbing your Sleep and Daily Life? Would You Like to Live Pain Free? An Undiagnosed Condition may be your Cause With over 10,000 research papers written about it, this hidden epidemic is referred to as “the disease your doctor can’t diagnose” with good reason. Are you worried about taking pain killers and anti-inflammatories long term? Is pain stopping you from doing the activities you used to love, or worse, is it killing you to do simple tasks? Research has proven that inflammation can be the driver of chronic diseases such as rheumatoid or osteoarthritis, or fibromyalgia, but where is the inflammation coming from? More people are being affected by an insidious disease process that can masquerade as fatigue, anxiety, depression, digestive symptoms, weight problems, and many more serious diseases. Joint or muscle pain is just the warning sign of total systemic inflammation. Inflammatory conditions are commonly caused by immune responses to certain foods, chemicals, bacterial, fungal or viral infection.
“Don’t accept pain as normal, there is something that can be done about it” The entry point is where food particles, or toxic environmental chemicals, and bacterial waste leak through your digestive tract entering your blood stream. When the immune system responds, a hormone, cortisol is produced, driving your immune system into action, promoting inflammation and beginning the development of chronic disease.
Through identifying and removing the cause you can then lead a pain free life. Results can be achieved quickly with accurate investigation and treatment. Specific testing can be ordered to identify offending foods, and types of bacterial, viral or fungal infection. Reducing inflammation through diet encourages weight loss if needed, is highly nutrient rich, and will leave you feeling full and satisfied, and pain free. You have a choice.

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT… STEAM AHEAD AT SCHOOL
International tourists are showering Noosa with love and money, with international visitor spend up 83.7 per cent to a staggering $116.1 million.
TARGET MARKET BRINGS IN DOLLARS Tourism Noosa’s targeted marketing campaigns are bringing in the dollars, but CEO Damien Massingham warns against becoming complacent. According to the latest International Visitor Survey results, Noosa’s international spend has increased by a whopping 83.7 per cent to $116.1 million compared to the state expenditure increase of just 4 per cent. Noosa also saw a 19.5 per cent increase in international visitor numbers, compared to a 10.2 per cent increase across the state. Mr Massingham said the results had been two years in the making through targeted international marketing strategies in high yield markets such as the UK and Germany and through long-term relationships with trade partners.
“This additional injection of dollars into our economy means local jobs are retained and created,” he said. Tourism Noosa will now look to the future and present a five-year plan at the end of April. Mr Massingham said the plan was all about ensuring Noosa kept getting top results. Mr Massingham said the continued success of the Noosa tourism industry depended on the continued investment of tourist providers in their product. He said the community needed to understand the importance of the industry and Tourism Noosa needed to continue to find fresh and innovative ways to market the region to the world and the high-yield visitors. ● Jolene Ogle
For those who still trying to keep up with the many and exciting new ways local kids are being educated, long gone are the days when school was just about reading, writing and arithmetic. Tewantin State School is now offering specialised digital technology lessons for Prep - Year 4 students. Principal Corrie Connors said this was the second year students had engaged in weekly lessons with their digital technology teacher, Jodie Donahue. By the end of Year 4, students will have had the opportunity to create a range of digital solutions through guided play and integrated learning, such as using robotic toys to navigate a map or recording science data with software applications. What’s exciting about this program is that students are on a pathway to become digital creators and innovators of tomorrow. It can help them now and possibly the community in the future.
The Tewantin Community Bank branch has generously worked in partnership with the school to sponsor and resource the program this year. Branch manager Wayne Hoens was on hand this week to watch the students put through their paces. Science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (S.T.E.A.M.), are emerging as critical subjects for students to explore in greater detail. In 2017, Tewantin State School is pioneering the full S.T.E.A.M. Ahead lunchtime club project for Year 6 students. On Thursday, 30 March, parents and caregivers will visit the school to see the students tackle real life challenges using their creative minds. For further information regarding the digital technology and STEAM programs, contact Tewantin State School on 5335 8888. ●

HALL SET FOR MAKEOVER The future of the Cooroy Memorial Hall is looking bright with a council report recommending the restoration of the building. Council director of community services Alan “Fox” Rogers prepared a report on 8 February outlining the possible future uses of the hall with option number four suggesting council enter into a lease agreement with the newly former Cooroy Memorial Hall Association (CMHA). The report said council has had a number of productive meetings with CMHA over the past month to discuss the process of restoring the hall. “It is evident there is significant community intent to actively assist with the repair of the hall
and the ongoing management,” Mr Rogers said. Mr Rogers said the CMHA building subcommittee, which comprises an architect, a structural engineer and two builders, had the “necessary expertise” to oversee the works. Option number one in the report was to demolish the hall at a cost of $165,000 and replace it with a memorial park, but this has not been recommended by Mr Rogers. According to the document, a report should have been presented to the March round of council meetings for councillors to decide the future uses and management of the hall. ● Jolene Ogle

t started as a marketing strategy designed to jumpstart three home-based businesses, but the photo of a young woman baring a henna design on her chest has gone viral and taking with it a powerful message. Hayley Walker was told three times she didn’t have cancer, but her gut told her she wasn’t too young for the disease, a lack of family history didn’t matter and that bumpy lump in her breast was something to worry about. Hayley knew deep down there was something wrong and demanded two more biopsies before she was eventually diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, an aggressive form of breast cancer. Just one week after her diagnosis, Hayley’s left breast was removed and she was told the cancer was stage two, grade three and it had spread to three of her lymph nodes. “It’s all over now. Apart from the hot flushes, I’m all clear,” she said. “I’m one boob down and a completely different girl to who I was six months ago, but I’m happy, healthy and doing the whole living life to the fullest thing. I’m so damn grateful, I could burst.” Hayley said she has found a new love for life and wanted something good to come from her traumatic experience. “I want to help people like people helped me when I needed it and I want to spread the word about the importance of early detection but also the importance of trusting your gut,” she said. “My story could have been a hell of a lot different if I had listened to my GP. If I had not insisted on that biopsy, even when they told me it could do more harm than good. The type of cancer I had was so aggressive and so fast growing; it would have for sure spread throughout my body by now. “But because I didn’t fit the profile, I didn’t say answer ‘yes’ to family history and because of my age, they told me I was fine. If anyone can take something from this, like booking that mammogram, checking their boobs right now or following up any concerns that they have with their doctor, or just realising the importance of how quickly everything can change and how every single day we get on this earth is a blessing, then I’ll be happy.” Enter three Noosa business women - photojournalist Helga Dalla, henna artist Alicia Mireille and florist Mandy Jedovnicky. Earlier this year, Alicia was sitting in one of the Noosa-based Powerhouse Collective networking meetings when she met Helga. The group offers a networking opportunity for work-from-home parents and while speaking to the group, Alicia said she wanted to boost her business. It was Helga who suggested they collaborate to create an artwork that could be used as marketing for both of their businesses.

For mum-of-four Alicia, creating a personalised artwork for a cancer survivor was deeply important after she lost her mum to the disease four years ago. “I wish I knew then how to make my mum feel beautiful in her journey,” she said. “One day I saw a woman with a henna crown and I thought that’s what I want to do. I want to help women feel beautiful.” It’s been six months since Alicia started Henna Folk, a home-based business that often sees Alicia delicately apply the natural pigment of henna to pregnant bellies for special photography sessions, but this time she wanted to create a special artwork for a cancer survivor. Helga offered to reach out to her network and was introduced to artist Hayley Walker. Alicia and Hayley worked together to create the deeply personal design that features Hayley’s favourite flower as well as two lions; one that looks to the side as a protector and the other lion that looks straight forward to show Hayley’s courage. Helga, who has lost a partner to cancer, said she was still shocked how a photography session that started as a collaborative idea for local business has really “come to life” and taken with it a message of cancer awareness.
This image of Hayley baring her chest covered in a henna design has gone viral with more than 2000 shares on Facebook so far, taking with it a warning about the early detection of cancer. Picture: Helga Dalla Photojournalist
“I’M ONE BOOB DOWN AND A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT GIRL TO WHO I WAS SIX MONTHS AGO, BUT I’M HAPPY, HEALTHY AND DOING THE WHOLE LIVING LIFE TO THE FULLEST THING. I’M SO DAMN GRATEFUL, I COULD BURST…” “I’m overwhelmed with the response to the photo,” she said. “It’s taken on a life of its own. The photos have touched people. I loved photographing Hayley and seeing her fierceness, confidence and tenacity. It was inspiring to watch Alicia work. She is just so natural.” Helga said her passion lies in helping people shine through photography. “I want to show the beauty in people through imagery, despite what life throws at them,” she said. “I want to help people be the best version of themselves.” Hayley said she was grateful for the opportunity to share her story saying it was “fun and heartwarming” to spend the day with inspiring, talented and creative business women. “I was actually blown away by the talent of these women,” she said. “This is something I never imagined doing but like I said, I’m living life to the fullest, pushing the boundaries of my comfort zone and hopefully sprinkling a little bit of inspiration to those I meet along the way.” Since posting the original image onto her Facebook page on 1 March, Hayley has received many messages of support and to date the post has been shared over 2300 times with more than 9000 people liking the photo. “I am so happy with the attention it is getting as I really do want to make sure this doesn’t keep happening to other young girls,” she said. “I’ve had so many messages from girls saying the same thing happened to them and it really worries me. “I’m really happy with all the lovely comments and support people have shown. There are so many beautiful women out there, which is what this is all about. It’s important to build each other up and look out for each other as women.” ●

NEWS NOOSA ASPHALT Soon even Noosa’s roads can claim green credentials with Noosa Council partnering with Downer to use high performance road resurfacing products made out of toner from recycled printer cartridges and old car tyres, in combination with bitumen. Council’s Civil Operations Manager, Allan Hull, said ‘Noosa Asphalt’ is better for the environment than conventional asphalt because it uses recycled toner and because it is manufactured at a lower temperature than conventional asphalt. ●

ASSAULT A man has been assaulted while waiting for a taxi in the tourism hot spot of Noosa Heads at the weekend. Police report a 22-year-old Noosaville man was waiting in line at a taxi rank on Noosa Drive on Sunday at 2.30am when he was hit in the head by a woman. The man fell and hit his head on the road before losing consciousness. He was taken to Nambour Hospital with a fractured skull. Investigations are continuing. ●
SCAMMERS Noosa Council is warning ratepayers to be vigilant after hackers tried to scam residents with false emails and phone calls. Fraudsters have been impersonating the rates section and sending emails asking for confidential information. The email asks for a copy of identification including a passport to “update your document with Noosa Council” and the fraudsters have used logos, formatting and staff details to make the emails look convincing. The information supplied is then used to try and access bank accounts and superannuation accounts to steal money. Noosa Council is urging anyone with any doubt about emails or phone calls received from the council to call on 5329 6500. Anyone who has responded to the emails is urged to contact their financial institution immediately. ●
HELPING TO SPREAD HOPE WITH DOORKNOCK APPEAL The Red Shield Appeal is back for another year and the Salvation Army needs volunteers to help with their annual doorknock appeal. The event is the organisation’s major fundraiser for the year and will run from 22 May to 4 June with all funds raised going towards a range of support services. Salvation Army Fundraising Coordinator Leanne Harrison said there is plenty of need in Noosa and the Salvos will do what they can to support local people. “But, we can’t do this without community support,” she said.
“There is an opportunity for you to give back to those that need hope where it is needed most in their lives by supporting the annual Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal. There are many ways you can support the work of the local Salvos. Get a team together and doorknock your local area, add your name to a roster for a community collection point at one of the various shopping centres across the Coast, hold a fundraising day yourself, or collect in your work place.” Anyone interested in participating or volunteering for the Red Shield Appeal, phone Leanne on 0401 558 942. ●

THE LOWDOWN FACES OF … the sea side
THREE … tips for beach safety
1
Read safety signs Before you go into the ocean read the safety signs. This way you are aware of any warnings or dangers on the beach such as dangerous currents and blue bottles jellyfish. If you get stung, wash off the tentacles with water, or pick off with fingers. Place the affected area in hot water for 20 minutes.
2
Swim with a friend To avoid trouble in water, always swim with a friend or family member so you can keep an eye out for each other. If you need a lifeguard’s assistance, raise your arm in the air and wave it from side to side. Save your energy by floating on your back and staying calm.
3
Rip currents Spot a rip by looking for deeper darker water, fewer breaking waves and sometimes sandycoloured water. If caught in a rip, stay calm, float and raise an arm for attention. Swim parallel to the beach.
WHAT IS JO REDWOOD OF THE FLASHPACKERS GOING TO DO WITH HER BRAND NEW SURFBOARD CLOCK?
WHAT IS SUNSHINE BEACH SURF LIFESAVING CLUB PRESIDENT CRAIG LOW LOOKING FORWARD TO?
“I’m going to hang it up in the Flashpackers! Perfect timing - the clock we have has been out of batteries. It will look great on the wall - not a bad lucky door prize!”
“We have about six weeks left in the volunteer season and then it will be time for a well-deserved break for everyone. Time to get training and prepare for the next season!”
WHAT IS SCOTT SUMMERS, DIRECTOR OF SURF LIFESAVING AT SUNSHINE BEACH SURF CLUB FEELING GOOD ABOUT? “We have just had one of the most successful seasons. Successful sporting achievements as well as no drownings on our beaches in the last year so its a great feeling.”
Q&A
MAUREEN GILBERT bought on honeymoon at BANG BANG’s second hand shop in Hong Kong. And - increasingly - my husband’s reading glasses! Passionate About? My husband, Steve - lovely, handsome man - how lucky am I? And food gardening - I take care of Honeysuckle Gardens for Wasabi restaurant, and Kin Kin State School’s Kitchen Garden. Love teaching the kids about plants, soils, chooks and the environment. Planning to do this weekend? A day off (FINALLY!) with my husband, either going to see “Moonlight” at Noosa cinema or drinking cocktails - or both. Also I’m meeting with Trent Shaw (principal, Kin Kin State School) to plan growing a cash crop in the school grounds (spray-free garlic). And I’ll be looking after the school chooks and gardens (the corn’s ready to harvest), plus one or two other gardening jobs in Kin Kin.
What are you... Noosa Today asked Maureen Gilbert from The Plot Thicken organic gardening services, what is she.... Listening to? Eva Cassidy “Songbird” - the late, great Eva, pure voice that goes straight to your soul. And in the car, either ABC Radio National or TWANG’s latest CD (local rockabilly/ Americana outfit). Also the Rocky Horror soundtrack preparing for the Kin Kin School’s production this winter. Reading? “The View from Christopher Street” (pieces from the New York gay newspaper of the 1970s-’80s) and “Budding and Grafting Plants” by Allen Gilbert (borrowed from the mobile library), and “Happy Hens” by ABC’s Organic magazine. IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT ‌ BREAK AND ENTER We heard former mayor Noel Playford’s home was broken into and a computer was stolen. We hope the police are hot on the trail of the high-tech thieves.
UNWANTED GUEST It’s none of our business, but we heard Greens candidate Joe Shlegeris didn’t like what a letter writer had to say in Noosa Today, so he paid the writer a visit to tell him so. David Wilson labelled Mr Shlegeris’ actions as “shameful behaviour. Mr Shlegeris confirmed he paid Mr Wilson a visit to discuss the topic of the letter to the editor, but strenuously denies he behaved in an aggressive or confrontational way.
SHOE THIEF Residents are being reminded to lock their doors after shoes were stolen from a Tewantin home. A woman reportedly entered the home while the male occupant was out in the back shed. So far, only shoes have been reported as stolen. â—?

He quickly became an integral part of the SCFF team and family, with a great catwalk and on camera presence (both still and film), very approachable, very professional, and everyone just loves him, said Ms Richmond. Charlie will walk for a range of labels at the event in October including Sunflair from Germany and Myer, and will be on hand to mentor models at the events catwalk castings in August.

INTEREST RATES
INVESTORS POWER HOUSING INTEREST rate cuts and the return of lending to investors over the past year have seen a re-emergence of investors as a dominant force in the national housing market. At the end of last week the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) published housing finance data for January 2017 and according to CoreLogic’s Cameron Kusher, the stats showed that at that time, demand from the investment segment of the market was continuing to surge. “Pairing the housing finance data with the Reserve Bank’s (RBA) lending aggregate data provides deeper insight into housing investor behaviour,” he said. The January 2017 housing finance data showed that over the month, investors committed to a total of $13.8 billion in finance for investment properties. The figure represented a 4.2 per cent rise over the month and a 27.5 per cent increase year-on-year (the largest annual increase since August 2014). Mr Kusher said the latest data shows demand from the investor segment in the housing market continues to surge. “With the substantial increase in dwelling values in Sydney and Melbourne over recent years, home owners are able to utilise the equity in their principal place of residence to purchase investment properties,” he said. “It is clear from the data that many
Interest rate cuts and the return of lending to investors over the past year have seen a re-emergence of investors as a dominant force in the national housing market. are doing so. While investor activity is rampant, the proportion of total housing finance commitments to owner-occupier first home buyers is at a historic low. “On one hand it is positive that home owners are investing on the other hand they can continue to outbid those people that don’t already own homes further locking many potential buyers out of the housing market.”
Mr Kusher said he would anticipate further tightening of lending policies to investors with some lenders approaching APRAs 10 per cent speed limit. “Should this occur it is likely to result in a moderate slowing of demand from the investment segment, at least temporarily like we saw in mid-2015 and early 2016,” he said. ●
PROSPECTS IN HOTEL LEASE THE 99-year leasehold of the Hilton Melbourne South Wharf has been sold, according to CoreLogic RP Data’s Meredith Baume. Ms Baume reported this was the biggest hotel sale of the year, with the 99-year leasehold of the Hilton Melbourne South Wharf selling for $230 million. Ms Baume said the hotel was sold by HHR Conventions, partly owned by NY listed entity, REIT Host Hotels and partly owned by property developer, Plenary. The purchaser was Singapore-based, UOL Group, a public-listed property company involved in the development of residential units, office towers, shopping malls, hotels and serviced apartments. The company began its life in the early 1960s and has been led by chairman Wee Cho Yaw since 1973. The Hilton Melbourne South Wharf is a five-star hotel comprising a ground floor lobby and retail space, a fourlevel podium and 396 rooms over 15 levels; it was completed in early 2009. In its fantastic position overlooking the Yarra River, and only a short walk to the CBD, the hotel is well positioned to cater for guests attending the next door Melbourne Convention Centre and the nearby Melbourne Exhibition Centre. The hotel last traded in 2011 when a 75 per cent interest in the leasehold was transferred at $137 million, according to CoreLogic. ●

Offering you a different real estate experience begins with being real. If you’re looking for someone to help you sell or buy property you’ll quickly get used to hearing words like, ‘trust’, ‘passion’, ‘integrity’, ‘reputation’, and ‘commitment’. At Star we treat you like a person... not a prospect. So we talk with you in a straightforward, meaningful way... not pitches we’ve rehearsed or memorised from a sales seminar. We don’t try and pretend there’s something magical NS ZXNSL YMJ NSYJWSJY YT ąSI GZ^JWX or work out prices of properties in your area. And we don’t have a special formula for signing you up... and then talking you down. Selling property effectively takes hard work. It takes experience, skill and aptitude. People who don’t have what it takes fall back on sounding like real estate agents. Our clients prefer real estate agents who sound like people.

NOOSA TODAY 27
BEHIND THE GAVEL
GORDON MACDONALD
CONFIDENCE IN THE BIDDING PROCESS THERE are two types of property news. The boom and the gloom. And when it comes to reporting the doom angle, last week’s property media did a great job. Apparently, we’re at “tipping point” (The Australian), confidence in the housing market has “collapsed” and we should “brace for the sell-off” (Sydney Morning Herald). In other big news, NAB and Westpac both announced out-of-cycle interest rate hikes on both investor and owneroccupier home loan rates, with other lenders apparently set to follow. The Montgomery Fund warned a record level
of debt would leave investors “unable to cope” with rising interest rates and the ripple effect would affect every property, everywhere. “No-one will escape,” they said. Ironic, considering the week before was all boom. So how did the South East Queensland market react? Last weekend, several of the auctions we called looked uncertain. The agents at the helm were not sure they had buyers at the necessary level, but they focussed on following the auction process regardless. The average number of registered
bidders was three. The average number of active bidders was one. In the majority of cases, we saw a careful negotiation with the highest bidder, rather than a flurry of competitive bidding. We were pleased that the majority of our auctions resulted in a sale. Next week we might be back to boom, with a flurry of good news hitting the papers. Regardless, agents who are successful with the auction process are the ones who stick to it diligently whatever might be going on outside of it. ●

ALL THE COLOURS OF THE FESTIVAL Last weekend saw Noosaville come to life more than usual with all colours of the rainbow for three fun-filled days. The Rainbow River Festival kicked off on Friday night with events across the whole weekend, winding up with the River Parade on Sunday afternoon with a flamingo theme, bringing all sorts of colourful birds out onto the water. The rain held off and the skies cleared for an afternoon of fun and celebration of the LGBTI community in Noosa Shire. 1

DOGGY-DOO DON’TS Congratulations to Noosa Council for standing firm on their decision not to allow Chaplin Park to be turned into another dog off-leash area. Local residents of all ages, but especially our young families, are fed up with their local parks being hijacked by noisy lobby groups. So far we have parks being used for festivals, car parking and now dog off-leash areas. Our council should not allow themselves to be bullied or influenced by these groups or online petitions. Unfortunately as our dog ownership increases, so does our number of irresponsible owners. Residents, young and old, have a right to feel safe when entering these recreational parks. Some dog owners see nothing wrong with their dogs jumping on people, knocking small children to the ground, and park users having to play amid dog poo and urine! These incidents can lead to injury and health concerns, apart from leading to a fear of dogs in the very young. Many of these incidences go unreported to council. I know even responsible dog owners would be shocked if they knew the extent of it. One can only hope that the aggressive dogs don’t make their way into children’s playgrounds. It is a shame when local residents start avoiding certain parks because they fear injury from dogs running free. At times, strong leadership means making decisions which do not please some community sectors. However, council has a duty of care to all residents and Noosa Shire visitors. They certainly need to exercise that duty for the safety and lifestyle of all. Pam Bownlee, Noosa Heads.
GREENS VS GREEN In times past environmentalists strove to protect all things wild. Today the Greens are the environment’s worst enemies with their forceful push for green energy that demonises lifegiving carbon and carbon dioxide. Wind turbines visually pollute the landscape and create audio levels detrimental to the health of every creature near them. Turbines are aerial obstacles that decimate birds and bats. The roads and transmission lines carved out to service them have destroyed the vegetation and create soil erosion pathways. Solar farms steal sunlight from every plant that tries to live in their shadow. Solar-thermal arrays roast any bird, bat or insect unfortunate enough to fly through their rays of heat. The push for ethanol and biodiesel means growing industrial crops like corn and palm oil on farmland. These crops have reduced food production, food that could feed multitudes where famine is rife. Vast swathes of virgin forest are razed, with no regard for the habitat of forest creatures, all to feed the green push for ethanol and bio-diesel.

recent Queensland Police Service CCC referred investigation involving Mayor Wellington. In a medium shire like ours, chasing corporate and council dollar for existence would be hard enough without exposing our fearless leaders (I’m confident there would be a loss of financial support here). I for one commend Jolene Ogle for her efforts and thank Noosa Today for publishing my letter requesting a statement of denial from Mayor Wellington to this ongoing QPS investigation to which we the ratepayers are still to see a response from our mayor. May I take this opportunity through Noosa Today to wish Jolene (and her beautiful daughter) all the very best for whatever the future holds for her. Trevor Clarey, Boreen Point.
LENSCAPE
HAS PAULINE PEAKED?
Deborah Daybell took this photo in her back yard at Pomona. “I’ve never seen anything like this so close up and so beautiful!“ Deborah said. If you want to submit a landscape, lifestyle or wildlife photo for Lenscape, please email newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au The wood from the razed forests is used to feed the hunger for wood as home heating and in turn choking the life out of asthmatics and fouling the air of urban communities, all this suffering and destruction to feed the green agenda. These green energy toys will not have any measurable effect on global temperatures, but they do come at a great economic and environmental cost. The question is, who are the real environment vandals? Colin Bond, Tewantin.
AT ONE WITH THE UN Steve Hall (Noosa Today, 16 March) sustains his blind acceptance of the UN anthropogenic global warming, green-left ideology. Steve must know that this is a hoax that lacks a single piece of empirical evidence to support it. ‘Climate change’ is just a clever Trojan horse camouflaging what is pure socialism masquerading as environmentalism; its objectives being unrelated to science - redistribution of Western wealth and establishment of an unelected, UNcontrolled one world government which would destroy our national sovereignty. Australia’s ratification of the Paris Agreement, without public explanation, commits us to economic suicide in slow-motion; our escalating increase in energy cost from world’s cheapest to world’s most expensive being part of the disease through the unnecessary, greenleft renewable energy insanity, the subsidies for which last year cost you, the taxpayer, $4000 million for zero environmental benefit. Readers should remember the origin of this sinister nonsense which pretends to attempt to find a solution to a problem that almost certainly does not exist. It has its origin in the ‘Rio Declaration’ out of the 1992 UN Earth Summit in Rio (the Paris Agreement is its 25-year-old ‘child’) at which its chairman, Maurice Strong, declared: “If we are to save the planet, mustn’t the industrialised civilisations collapse and isn’t it our duty to ensure that happens?” Maurice Strong and his associate author, Mikhail Gorbachev, would be pleased with how well the hoax has progressed. If you want to solve the ‘energy crisis’, scrap the renewable energy targets and subsidies. John Smeed, Noosaville.
POWER TO THE SHEEPLE Scare the sheeple, round two. Remember when the carbon tax would raise electricity prices?
Thursday, 23 March, 2017
Wipe Whyalla off the map? Legs of lamb would cost $100? Get ready for the new boogieman renewable energy ... ‘electricity prices will rise ... blah, blah’. Margaret Wilkie, Peregian Beach.
IT’S FAKE NEWS Must be election time again - or maybe the heat is addling their brains. Steve Hall, Joy Ringrose, Margaret Wilkie et al are out in force with their “fake news”. They all decry the use of fossil fuel fired power generation because it pollutes the air with that nasty CO2 gas causing global warming, but after the debacle of the South Australia blackouts they are now embracing natural gas-fired power stations with open arms to provide baseload power. This is hypocrisy at its worst - natural gas is a fossil fuel and burning it produces CO2. The SA Government proposes a 100 megawatt battery storage farm, but at what cost? If SA is serious about going it alone with their own renewable power generation, then why don’t they just cut the interconnector to that “dirty” coal-fired Hazelwood power station in Victoria. The last person out of SA would not have to turn the lights off. The Prime Minister proposes an extension of the Snowy Mountain Scheme to provide an additional 2000 megawatts. Conservationists are already coming out against the proposal, claiming it will destroy the environment. Thank God it was built when it was; it would never get off the ground today. However, any new proposal will take time to become operational and the only way to have energy security in the short-term is to stop Hazelwood from being decommissioned and to recommission those coal-fired power stations that have been taken out of service by the loony left. Phillip Rutherford, Cooroibah.
TURNING TO ENGLISH As if it wasn’t bad enough over the weekend to attend a meeting which signals a “probable death of paradise” we oldies know as the Everglades, a reliable informant tells me of the resignation of Noosa Today’s helpful and lovable Jolene Ogle. Through the years I have written many letters, which Jolene has helped make English of. A most recent one was my calling on Mayor Tony Wellington to make a statement on the
I don’t often agree with Glen Elmes, but when he says that the Pauline Hanson One Nation party is closer to a cult than a democratic political party, he is not far from the truth. It is ruled by Pauline, and no other views will be tolerated. Even one of her candidates in WA accused Ms Hanson of running a dictatorship. After getting under five per cent of the vote in the recent WA election, which is about the same as their Australia-wide vote at the federal election last July, some people still insist that PHON has a lot of support and is growing rapidly. I don’t think so. They have no policies on health, education or the environment, and attract candidates who don’t think the massacre at Port Arthur happened, think gay people should be treated as patients, and don’t believe in climate change. According to Hansard, PHON vote with the LNP 85 per cent of the time in Canberra, so all they will do in Queensland is split the conservative vote, probably at the expense of the National Party. Since first entering federal politics in 1996 as an Independent after she was disendorsed by the Liberal Party, PHON has secured more than $7 million in funding from the taxpayer. They support the cut in penalty rates for Sundays and have voted with the LNP for the recent pension cuts. I guess if people want to vote for a party that foments racial intolerance and religious bigotry, and makes the gap between rich and poor even wider, then PHON is the one for them. Bruce Hallett, Tewantin.

ANGELS
AFTER ANGLE
FOR FANS Legendary Aussie rock band The Angels are gearing up for a tour guaranteed to smash the speakers and get venues rockin’. Announcing their 2017 4x4 Across Australia tour, the band will be digging through their back catalogue to pick some of their biggest hits for the special run of shows, and they are coming to Noosa. The 4x4 concept will see the band hand-picking four of their most iconic records, and playing, back-to-back, four hits from each record. Add to that an encore that will feature a swag of more classic tracks, and 4x4
“OUR AUDIENCES LEAVE THE VENUES WITH BIG SMILES, AS DO WE…” will be a tour to go down in Aussie rock history. For rhythm guitarist John Brewster, the 4x4 concept is about exploring more than four decades of great rock songs from the band’s archives. “Each of our albums have a distinct sound and atmosphere that differs from the others,” he says. “It’s great to enter and embrace the feeling of these albums. We always like
to have an angle that works for the fans and the band too,” Brewster said. Having recently wrapped up a massive sell-out run of shows on their Hardwired tour with MI-SEX, the band is now getting together to decide what songs should be part of the new concert series. They are taking into consideration audience feedback from previous shows, as well as fan suggestions.
It is an opportunity to explore some of the songs that get requests but don’t always make it onto set lists. “Our audiences leave the venues with big smiles, as do we” he said. “There are always songs that people would have liked to hear, and also songs that we would like to play. The 4x4 tour gives us an opportunity to add some rarities.” See this classic Aussie rock band at the V Room, Villa Noosa on Friday 31 March. Tickets are available from $40 through www.www.villanoosa.com.au or at Villa Noosa. This is an 18+ only event - Photo ID required ●
ALL THE BELLS AND WHISTLES Sunday 2 April at Pomona’s Majestic Theatre two blokes juggle over 20 instruments live on stage in a spellbinding performance. A multi-award winning sell-out hit at festivals around the world, Tubular Bells for Two is now set to tour Australia. Ask anyone who grew up through the ’70s and they will be able to tell you exactly where they were when they first heard Tubular Bells. Composed by Mike Oldfield in 1973, the album was the first release on Richard Branson’s fledgling record label Virgin Records. The album went on to sell over 30 million copies - kick-starting the Virgin empire - and became the soundtrack to the cult-classic film, The Exorcist. Now, more than 40 years on, two young Australian multi-instrumentalists, Aidan Roberts and Daniel Holdsworth, are presenting this modern masterpiece in a challenging live event. noosatoday.com.au
So what’s the catch? Oldfield harnessed - what was at the time - the latest in multi-track recording technology, playing a multitude of instruments one-byone in the studio. However, in Tubular Bells for Two there are only two men on stage needing to perform every part live with only four hands and four feet between them. The duo are literally rushed off their feet as they rush around a sea of instruments. It is an intricately choreographed, thrilling piece of tightrope theatre. Things can go wrong at any moment, and the slightest mistake or misplaced limb can bring the entire show crashing to a halt. Regardless of whether you’re a Tubular Bells virgin, or long-time fan, Tubular Bells for Two is guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat. It is one of the most innovative musical performances to grace the stage in many years. ●

Thundamentals - Everyone We Know
The Girl with the Wrong Name, by Barnabas Miller
Jasper Jones
Thundamentals are arguably Australia’s most positive hip-hop group, with tunes like ‘Smiles Don’t Lie’ and ‘Quit Your Job’ proving anthems for many listeners throughout Australia. Their fourth album, Everyone We Know is the first on their label, High Depth, and comes with high expectations. MCs Tuka and Jeswon have honed their craft to the point where they switch from verse to hook seamlessly, and are so confident in their delivery and themes that they’re now worthy of comparison to American hip-hop superstars. Guests that span the gamut of fame, from Hilltop Hoods to Blue Mountains local Mataya, chip in at times to add even more colour to what is a quality record. ●
If ever any movie had “sleeper hit” written all over it, it’s Jasper Jones. Understated and minimalistic, here we have the story of Charlie (Levi Miller), a bookish loner, woken by local mixed-race outcast Jasper Jones (Aaron L. McGrath) outside his window on Christmas night. Jasper leads Charlie deep into the forest and shows him something that will shock and change him forever and lead both of them on a dangerous journey in a town full of secrets and lies. This is a tense but human mystery unfolding at a steady pace and with just enough Australian humour to make it feel real. ●
She is an impartial documentarian and only half herself without a camera. She hunts for answers to perplexities like an inexplicable fascination with daisies, a disfiguring scar, and her precise recollection of wedding announcements in the New York Times. The end of summer has brought new and baffling concerns to challenge the girl with the wrong name. Propelled by puzzling circumstances that challenge her reality, this mistrustful heroine with the snappy self-deprecating style probes the mysteries of the mind in this psychological thriller. ●

The Eumundi and District community came together on Sunday 12 March in a joyful celebration of those things that make life good on the Sunshine Coast and to raise money for palliative care in our region. The Carnivale theme for the Eumundi Rotary Long Lunch was a hit with guests. Some 312 guests enjoyed the fine food prepared by local chefs. Three courses of shared platters were served between sparkling performances by our very own and much loved Doo Wop Dolls and charity “Queen” Melony Brests. Lessons from past events and careful attention to detail ensured an afternoon of good cheer for those who generously bought tickets for the lunch and participated in the raffles. A cooking demonstration by celebrity chef Matt Golinski highlighted the gourmet feel of the event - complementing the creative platters prepared by Andy Dundas of the Fig Tree Restaurant, Ned Nolan of Bohemian Bungalow and a signature duck pate by Max Porter. The event raised approximately $18,000 - to be presented largely to Katie Rose Cottage Ltd - with donations also going to Cittamani and Humming Bird House. Each provide important caring services in our communities for those facing final farewells.
Eumundi Rotary Club thanked each of the one hundred and twenty volunteers whose contribution made the day so special and created a wonderful sense of united camaraderie between individuals, community groups and businesses. ●

SKILLED UP AND READY FOR WORK Sunshine Butterflies’ first round of trainees have completed their six-month traineeship and are now geared and ready to enter the workforce. Project manager Rob Purves praised the trainees’ skill level and said the participants were now ready to be hired. The 15 trainees have spent six months developing the five-acre Our Backyard hobby farm in Cooroibah with a range of projects such as a treehouse, garden beds, pergola roofing, paving and landscaping. Training manager Kim Lewry said Sunshine Butterflies had used the many contacts they have in the construction industry to connect the trainees to get their foot in the door. Taela Whitmore, the only female trainee, took out the Best Trainee award, while Asher Buckman won the award for the most improved. The traineeships were part of the State Government’s Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative and Sunshine Butterflies will now welcome another 15 trainees to the farm this week. Anyone who would like more information or would like to get involved in the Our Backyard project can phone Sunshine Butterflies on 5470 2830 or email admin@sunshinebutterflies.com.au

RESTFUL HAVEN FOR WOMEN The average person is working longer, not getting enough sleep, and according to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 45 per cent of Australian women regularly feel rushed or pressed for time. With school holidays fast approaching and bringing with them the daily juggle of playdates, drop-offs and work schedules, a range of local wellbeing specialists have banded together to create Haven, a mindfulness sanctuary for busy women to be held at Noosa Civic shopping centre between 25 March and 13 April. Wellbeing coach and health and fitness professional Kelly Carthy is one of many experts sharing her knowledge with those stopping in at the Haven, offering her wellbeing tips for staying fit and healthy while balancing a busy lifestyle. There will be an array of lifestyle and mindfulness workshops including free yoga for adults and kids, a macrame wall hanging workshop with Jodie Townsend, a natural beauty workshop with Adele
McConnell, a flower crown workshop with Dezley Hughes and OzHarvest Sunshine Coast will be on site to show participants how easy it is to minimise food wastage at home. Noosa Civic Centre manager Brian Turner said he was delighted to offer an opportunity for the community to attend a diverse range of activities all aimed at increasing mindfulness and taking time out. Teacher and teen mentor Amanda Rootsey said she looked forward to hosting a number of workshops aimed at girls aged between nine and 12, which had been designed to build confidence and enhance wellbeing at an age when girls in particular often feel vulnerable and unsure of themselves. “These sessions aim to help girls develop their own inner strength and positive self-esteem. They provide insight into building beautiful friendships and even allow girls to try their hand at
making natural skincare masks out of fruit, which is a little messy and a lot of fun!” she said. Mr Turner said the Haven would also be focused on supporting a local not-forprofit organisation. “While many of the sessions are being delivered to shoppers free of charge, some sessions request a small five dollar donation towards the Waves of Wellness Foundation, a mental health surf therapy charity committed to changing lives by delivering innovative programs for people experiencing mental health challenges,” Mr Turner said. The Haven mindfulness sanctuary will be based at Noosa Civic shopping centre between 25 March and 13 April. To find out more or view the full calendar of activity, visit www.noosacivicshopping. com.au, search for the centre on Facebook, or contact centre management on 5440 7900. ●
Teacher and mentor for teens, eco model and writer Amanda Rootsey will teach teens how to shine from within at the Noosa Civic Haven.

WHITING ABOUNDS IN RIVER
Chance of rain 90%
FRIDAY
The whiting have been in good numbers with quality whiting being caught throughout the lower reaches of the river. The Frying Pan, Dog Beach and the banks along Gympie Terrace have been the place to be. The good old elbow slappers have been responding well to live and cured worms yabbies and surface lures like the Bassday Sugapens, Bassday Crystal Poppers and Fish Candy Skinny Dogs. Bream have also been on the chew with some thumping bream around the Woods Bay area of late. The humble prawn or a strip of fresh mullet has been working a treat. Soft plastics and small hardbody lures are another great way to chase bream and when fished on super light braided line or straight through fluorocarbon can provide some great fun. There have been some great flathead in the lower reaches of the river, bouncing soft plastics along the bottom would have to be one of the most effective methods, with one of the standouts being the Keitech Easy Shiner in various colours. Trevally, tailor, and school jew have also been in the lower reaches and have been feeding hard on baitfish coming down stream after the wet. Fishing upriver in the dirty water, you may come across a thredfin salmon as they love the dirty water conditions. Offshore thing has been going off! The fishing on Sunshine Reef has been exceptional over last couple of weeks with the rain. Consistent reports of quality sweetlip, squire, coral trout, tuskies, and Moses perch. On North Reef, there has been some nice-sized Spanish mackerel. Trolling deep diving lures have been working a treat along with slow trolled pillies and slimies with a squid skirt. If you come across a patch of them down deep, don’t be afraid to drop a metal slug or micro jig to try and tempt them. In the Bay, tuna have been in good numbers with the mack tuna and long tails

Liam Fox with a nice parrot fish. feeding on bait schools. Slug and surface lures have been the go for those larger craft that did the run out to The banks, with good-sized snapper, tuskies, pearl perch and moses perch all accounted for. On the beaches, Noosa’s Northshore is a great option to take the family with tailor, flathead, whiting, dart, bream and big jew all on the menu. One spot that is great is the stretch along Teewah beach. There has been some good gutter with quality fish coming on the tide. Fishing the rocks at Noosa National Park has also seen some good results with sweetlip, squire and tuna all on the chew. On behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures. ●

Siblings Tyler (the reigning world women’s champion) and Mikey (the mulleted wildcard who is about to set the world on fire) also surfed with distinction throughout the Quiksilver and Roxy events, but they can have had no prouder moment than when they waded into Rainbow Bay to hoist their big bro - all two metres plus of him - onto their shoulders and chair him up the beach. These were all magical moments, and if you were washing your hair last Sunday and somehow managed to miss it all, no matter what you think of pro surfing’s world tour,

I urge you to go to worldsurfingleague.com and dig it out. Sport exists to bring out the best in people, and Owen Wright’s comeback is the greatest example of this maxim that I have seen in a long, long time. Of course it wasn’t just the Wright Family Circus. There were plenty of other highlights. Arriving at the Snapper site early on Sunday morning, my daughter Ellie and I ran into Kelly Slater and said hello. She gave him a peck on the cheek and he prompty went out and controversially went down to Brazil’s Gabby Medina after having surfed
brilliantly all event. Must have been the kiss of death. Let’s not forget Stephanie Gilmore, the smiling, gracious queen of Snapper, who is the only woman who sits behind the rock with Mick and Joel and pulls in on anything. The brilliant Santa Barbarian Lakey Peterson took her all the way to the final, but no-one can beat a fired-up Steph at home. I think Lakey will win a world title, but she might have to wait until Steph equals Layne Beachley’s seven. And then there was the charge of the goofies, a subject dear to my heart. In addition to the aforementioned Wright, Wilko and Medina, who finished first, second and third respectively, Brazil’s Italo Ferreira and Cronulla rookie Conner O’Leary both impressed with equal fifth places. I’ve been watching Ferreira’s low centre of gravity backhand power explosions for a couple of seasons now, but this was the first time I’d seen O’Leary, another big solid boy whose backside attack is smooth as silk. In all, it was a great season opener, and augers well for a good tour year, despite some financial issues facing the WSL. Call me a groupie, but I’m off to Margaret River at the weekend to catch some of the Drug Awareness Pro. ●

Well, there are surf contests, and then there are surf contests that reach out and take you to a whole new emotional place. Trolling through social media last Sunday evening after returning from a lightning dash to Snapper Rocks to catch the end of the Quiksilver and Roxy Pros, I found among the usual rants from couch potato judges - “Kelly wuz robbed etc etc” a comment from someone still reeling from Owen Wright’s fairy tale comeback. “I’ve never watched a surfing contest that made me cry before.” Exactly. I blubbered all the way through the last 10 minutes of the final as it became apparent that defending champ Matt Wilkinson wasn’t going to catch the gentle giant who a year ago looked as though he would never lead a normal life again, let alone win a world tour event, and I was a complete mess as the hooter sounded and Wilko slid off his board to embrace his friend and rival. Unlike my Facebook friend, this wasn’t the first time a world tour event had reduced me to tears. Not quite two years ago I was howling at the moon in the middle of the night as Mick Fanning fought for his life on the other side of the world, and Julian Wilson paddled bravely towards him to help. I shed a tear when friends and enemies of Andy Irons put everything on hold to mourn his passing. But this was different, because just a month ago it seemed it would never happen, that the greatest comeback story in the history of surfing would never be written. As he revealed in an emotional post-final interview, Owen Wright’s doctors warned him that the psychological scars from his horrific Pipeline head injury might render him incapable of any kind of stressful competitive situation. Having lived through hell over 15 months of recuperation, during which time he and his partner were blessed with a son, Owen had to think very seriously about where his priorities lay. He thought it through, then he thought some more, and then he stopped thinking, put on a jersey and went surfing. And what a joy it was to see those effortless backhand lines, those vertical hacks all linked together down the line in the perfect definition of the judging criteria’s “speed, power and flow”. From his very first heat at Snapper, there was no doubt in anyone’s mind that the Big O was back.

AROUND THE GROUNDS LYNN WINS THROUGH IN JIM PENMAN MEMORIAL
SEASON KICKS OFF FOR YOUNG DRAGONS BY DOUG TOMS The 2017 junior rugby union season is well underway for the Eumundi Dragons Junior Rugby Union club who played at Noosa Dolphins Sunshine Beach grounds last Saturday. With Under 7, Under 8, Under 10 and Under 13 age divisions, the small but mighty club is preparing for what is expected to be an exciting and enjoyable season for the entire team of players, coaches, managers and supporters. At this stage, the Dragons are still looking for players to ensure that these teams have a secure playing roster. Any potential new players - born 2004 to 2012 - are advised to attend a Thursday night

training session from 4.30pm to 5.30pm at the Eumundi Showgrounds. There they will meet club officials, have a run with players and receive all the information needed to register for the 2017 season. All new recruits are most welcome - no previous experience in the game of rugby is required. For the first time in a couple of years, the club has seen the signing up of a number of girls wishing to experience the game “played in heaven.“ Closer to Easter, the club also has plans to be nominating an Under 12 or Under 14 Girls 7s team to participate in an all girls competition in junior rugby on the Sunshine Coast.

SUPER REF IS ONE OF THE BEST GOING AROUND BY JOLENE OGLE Noosa District State High School 2011 graduate Danielle Nunn has returned to her school to referee a game of touch football between the Noosa Open Girls and the International Philippines Open Girls team. Danielle has attained the highest level of referee accreditation, a Level VI, which allows her to referee national and international competitions and she is ranked as the fourth best women’s referee in Australia. The tightly-contested match was held on the NDSHS school oval, with the end result a draw with two points awarded to both sides. A drop off to determine the outright winner was not possible, as the Philippines team were under time constraints, due at Sunshine Beach State High School straight after the draw was completed.
“It was such a fun experience,“ Danielle said. Danielle thoroughly enjoyed catching up with her teachers and school touch football coach Murray Gordon.
Danielle’s mother, and NDSHS teacher aide Jan Connell, is very proud of her daughter’s success as a referee. “My beautiful daughter is a super ref,“ Ms Connell said. ●

A new windsock has been installed at the Noosa Tigers AFL grounds on Weyba Road to help emergency helicopters land on the oval. The windsock will indicate wind patterns to allow for a smooth landing and take-off for the emergency and private helicopters that have used the oval in the past decade. The new rotating windsock and installation facility was supplied by Noosa Airfield, a long term supporter of the Noosa Tigers. ●

TALKING FOOTBALL
RON LANE
DOLPHINS AND PIRATES READY FOR IT On visits to two of our local football clubs - Dolphins Rugby Union and Pirates Rugby League - one thing becomes obvious for both codes - there is a distinct atmosphere of confidence for the season ahead. NOOSA PIRATES With players returning to their clubs for another season, strong support groups being formed and major sponsors, Dowling and Neylan Real Estate at Dolphins and Tewantin-Noosa RSL at Pirates, all the essential ingredients for a very progressive and successful season are in place. On Saturday at Maroochydore, the Pirates’ dream of once again fielding an A Grade team became a reality, when under newly-appointed coach, Ron Greentree, they took to the paddock at Wises Road to play their first round of competition. Their opposition was last year’s premiers, Maroochydore Swans. The long, hot summer of drawn out executive meetings had not been in vain. Despite the final score being 24-18 in the Swans’ favour, all Pirates’ officials and supporters came away very happy. For a team that met for the first time on the previous Thursday evening at training, their performance was outstanding. Apart from fielding an A Grade, Pirates also played Under 18 and reserve grade teams - winning both. Prior to this, last week at their clubhouse they officially launched their 2017 season. After welcoming Patron Glen Elmes, Member for Noosa, and major sponsors, emcee Ben Christensen spoke of the club’s aim to unite both the junior and senior clubs as one identity. “To achieve this we will definitely be communicating at all levels - it can’t be done overnight - but it will happen.” On being introduced, Club President President Greg Christensen acknowledged those in attendance, then spoke of offseason achievements. Amongst those were internal refurbishment of the clubhouse, the ongoing success of the annual rodeo and the visit of the International Legends of League. He then welcomed returning and new sponsors into the Pirates family. The president then introduced his executive and coaches - Vice President Ben Christensen, Secretary Lexie Mawn, Treasurer Gary Christensen. The coach for the Under 18s is Mick

Duff, and the man in the hot seat - A Grade Coach, Ron Greentree. It was during this period that the President confirmed officially that the Pirates A Grade was definitely a goer. The following evening at 6pm they had their first official training run at Pirate Park.
NOOSA DOLPHINS For the Dolphins they also had a good start to the season with a big role up of parents and players that made the junior sign-on a good indicator for the time ahead. Following a successful season which saw the seniors go through undefeated to win the Sunshine Coast Premiership and the
election of new president Donald McKill at the Annual General Meeting, all players from Under 6 to Under 18 are really keen to go. With this wide range of age groups, all indications are that there will be a total of eighteen teams (some groups having two and three), the Dolphins are in line for one of their best seasons ever in the history of junior football. President of the Junior Division Rob Frey said, “We have a very healthy and positive environment and our numbers are up on last year.” Both junior and senior presidents are in agreeance that it is not just rugby that is taught at the Dolphins but above all -
loyalty, team spirit, mateship and family values. Coaches are not just coaches but mentors as well. To ensure that the high standard is maintained the club has this year appointed Brent Timms as Coaching Coordinator. “Mentors and coaches will be greatly assisted by this officer to ensure that the club meets all objectives in developing players and people in all groups; parents, supporters and above all - the game of rugby union,” McKill said. For the Dolphins, their first game will be against University at Maroochydore on the 25 March. We wish them well. ●
DOLPHINS SET FOR SEASON LAUNCH AS PAST PREMIERS BY JON LEWIS Being undefeated 2016 premiers and the Sunshine Coast Sports Federation Team of the Year is far from being enough to secure the trophy in 2017 for the Dowling and Neylan Noosa Dolphins. That’s the message from Noosa A Grade coach Michael Phelan who has returned to the role after a two year absence. “Whilst we have retained the bulk of our side, we know that the other teams have recruited well and will be much stronger in 2017,“ Phelan said. “Caloundra came very close to the title last year and will be better this year,“ he said. With the A Grade competition reduced to four teams this year following the relegation of Nambour to Reserve grade, every week will be challenging. Maroochydore and University have made big changes in their leadership teams 46 NOOSA TODAY

including the recruitment of long-time Noosa coach Stu Beaky to arch-rivals Maroochydore. Phelan recognises these changes will improve the performance of both teams and means every week will result in strong competition. “The format of this year’s competition in A Grade has the minor premiers going straight into the grand final, with teams two and three fighting off in a single finals game. That means we must be on our game week in week out, very little room for an off week as the competition table will be close,“ he said. From last year’s A Grade side, the Dowling and Neylan Dolphins have lost half back Will Hanton and the experienced number eighat Tom McVerry to retirement, centre Jay Moffat to injury and Josh Brown who has moved overseas. “The loss of Tom McVerry is significant

in terms of his experience and on field presence, but the back row is one area we are lucky enough to have depth,“ Phelan said. “The injury to Jay Moffat is really disappointing for him and the team as last year he really stamped his authority and showed his skill in the centres.“ New Dolphins President Donald McKill is looking forward to a full season with the addition of a womens team and the reintroduction of the Colts competition. “The loss of Nambour in the A Grade competition is far from ideal, but the 2017 season presents us with new opportunities to promote rugby with the ladies and colts teams back in the draw. “Noosa have been strong advocates for both these competitions for many years so it is pleasing to see them come to fruition’ McKill said. McKill paid particular tribute to the
rejuvenated junior side of the club under the leadership of Rob Frey. “The enthusiasm and endeavour of the junior committee and parents has been terrific, and to be honest, they have really pushed the seniors to lift as well,“ McKill said. The Dowling and Neylan Dolphins season launch is this Friday night at the club and President McKill is keen for members and supporters to come along. “Our website has all the details so please check it out at noosarugby.com.au. It will be a great night and a good way to get the season underway, welcome our ladies team and acknowledge our sponsors.“ The season gets underway this Saturday with A Grade against University at Sippy Downs. HATS OFF TO FESTIVAL ORGANISERS As the evergreen ex-Olympian Bennie Pike once said when speaking of our sporting life on the Sunshine Coast, “Sport puts bums on seats.” Anyone who was around Noosa during the Laguna Festival of Surfing would have seen Bennie’s words come true. Great crowds in all areas of our town, great weather and surf. For several years now, the Noosa Heads S.L.S.C. has proudly been on call to assist when needed, and this year was no different. Being up close and personal gives our duty people a look at the work teams and a chance to publicly thank those who made the festival a success. They bring visitors into our town and put feet in the sand. The hard work and dedication of Phil Jarratt and daughter Sam Smith have done wonders not only for the surfing life but also for our community at large, bringing in business and above all keeping the name of Noosa out there, among the people of this great nation. Another person is Noosa’s number one Lion Gary Dun, always there, always helpful. Interesting to note, the Festival of Surfing is not the only outstanding contribution that Sam Smith has made to this community. This lady has, for some time, held the all-important office of director of junior (Nippers) activities in the Noosa Club - a position that plays a very important role in our future. So to Phil, Sam and Gary, many thanks for your outstanding dedication and loyalty in your chosen field. Also, many thanks to the Noosa Surf
Noosa Heads SLSC president Ross Fisher, sponsor John McDermott, Sandy Warren, Lana Rogers 1st female swimmer and Cooper Williams 1st male swimmer. (Supporters) Club for once again hosting the Four Codes of Football Fund-raising Beach Party in the tent supplied by the Noosa Festival of Surfing. A great way to finish the week. On Sunday morning, the 14th Annual Shirley Strachan Memorial Swim for Noosa Surf Club took place at Noosa’s Main Beach. Despite the inclement weather, 60 plus
swimmers lined up in Little Cove for the start of the 1.2km swim. As of this year, the name of the late Bruce Warren has been added to the event in honour of his outstanding contribution. The event with the support of wife Sandy and sponsor McDermott Aviation has been Bruce’s baby; a fact that is acknowledged and saluted by all.
Regarding results, first home in the men’s division was Cooper Williams, and in the ladies, Lana Rogers took the honours. It was good to see this young lady on the mend after suffering a bad ankle injury; hopefully she will be fully fit for the Australian Titles. A very pleasing and emotional part of the trophy presentation was the presence of Bruce’s sons Charlie, who flew in from Tasmania and Will who came from Sydney. Add to this, wife Sandy and sponsor John McDermott, plus club president and life member Ross Fisher, officials, swimmers and supporters. All the respect and support needed to ensure that the swim will continue was evident. Two senior members who came in for special mention were Peter French and Gina Lynch. Both of these members have the distinction of having contested all 14 events. On the weekend, 12 new bronzes passed their final assessment and were welcomed into the Noosa club by the president. In the IRB training, a crew course of several members has been completed and a driver’s course is ongoing with members from three clubs Marcoola, Sunshine and Noosa being involved. Following the success of the Noosa First Aid team at the recent state titles, heavy training sessions with Noosa legendary coach Lenore Grice involved, are underway. Despite their youth, a major success at the forthcoming Australian Titles is not beyond their capability. Good luck to all. ●
SPORT INJURY: MINIMISING RISKS AND FEELING THE LOVE BY TYRONE SAUL OF YOU FIRST PERSONAL TRAINING Australia is sport-loving nation, both as participants and spectators, with a recent study showing that 11 million Australians chose to participate in organised sport in the last 12 months, with 5.2 million making sport a regular part of their weekly routine. With such high participation rates comes the risk of injury. According to a report from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, Australian Rules and football/soccer has the highest population based rates of injury hospitalisation, but is this reason for concern, maybe not, as the findings show this is more a reflection of the high levels of participants playing the above sports, than it being inherently the most dangerous. According to a NSW sports injury report, combined football codes made up 27 per cent of all injuries with wheel sports (8 per cent) and water based sports (6 per cent) making up the second and third highest injury rates. In the light of the above findings, what can the average sportsperson do this season to manage or prevent injury during sport? Recommendations to reduce the risk: · Seek professional advice, from your local GP, Fitness professional or trusted sporting club and qualified coaches. · Warm up before and after exercise. Although the evidence is inconclusive, it has been broadly recognised that the long term benefits of stretching decreases muscle stiffness, contributes to greater dynamic flexibility and increase muscle compliance through greater blood flow for loads and forces to be placed upon noosatoday.com.au
Stretching as part of a good warm up routine can help prepare the body for physical exertion. the body. Stretching may also assist in stabilising heart and blood pressure rate. · Use the right equipment for the chosen sport, for example, if you’re playing touch football, choose grass sport shoes over
standard runners. · Use strapping for vulnerable joints that may have a tendency to go beyond their standard safe range of motion · Listen to your body - hydrate regularly when exercising (about 250ml every 30 minutes) and choose active, less intense
recovery days of two to three days per week. With the right advice and strategies, we can enjoy playing sport and minimise the cost on our health system and ourselves by taking a few simple steps towards prevention rather than cure. ●
