Great gate debate By Jeremy Sollars Debate is raging over calls to move a set of historic gates from Warwick’s Leslie Park back to their original home at Glengallan Homestead to coincide with the homestead’s 150th anniversary this year. Dozens of readers have contacted the Free Times over the last week to point out that the gates - which the Glengallan Homestead Trust refers to as the Glengallan Gates - are, in fact, officially known as the Leslie Memorial Gates. The four sandstone pillars and the iron gates - which stand in the south-west corner of Leslie Park opposite the Warwick Courthouse - were gifted to the Warwick council in 1940 by the then owner of Glengallan Homestead, Oswald Slade, to mark the centenary of the Leslie brothers settling in the Warwick district. At that time the homestead, which is now a restored and notable tourist destination, was in disrepair and the gates were clearly not missed at the time of their donation by the Slade family. When they were installed in Leslie Park, the council heritage listed gates were mounted with commemorative insets recognising the Leslie brothers, which remain in place today. A special council meeting on Monday 13 March considered a formal request from the Glengallan Homestead Trust to have the gates shifted back to the homestead - at the trust’s expense - with the council deciding to put the issue out for public comment. Last week Glengallan Homestead Trust chairwoman Donna Fraser announced that a Toowoomba businessman with family links to Glengallan, Warwick and Allora had donated $10,000 to Glengallan’s 150th anniversary projects, including return of the gates. MP to open the doors in Warwick - coming soon

Federal Maranoa MP David Littleproud expects to open an office in Warwick by the end of July. A spokeswoman said office space had been identified on Palmerin Street, to the left of Westpac Bank and currently occupied by the Rose City Shoppingworld centre management staff, who are due to move out shortly. The spokeswoman said an internal fit-out to government specifications would need to be carried out and tenders would be put out for the work. The LNP’s Mr Littleproud was elected as the Maranoa MP at the July 2016 election. Based in Warwick, he also has offices in Roma, Dalby and Longreach.

A Warwick man who stood trial last week in the Toowoomba District Court on charges relating to alleged sexual offences against an underage girl was found not guilty by the jury in the case. The man was found not guilty of two counts of indecent treatment of a child under 16 and under 14, and one count of indecent treatment of a child under 16. The 73 year old, who cannot be named so as to protect the identity of the complainant, was last year found guilty in the same court of similar offending against a separate complainant and was sentenced to 18 months in prison, suspended after serving four months. He appealed that sentence in the Brisbane Court of Appeal in early March, on the grounds that the sentence was unreasonable but the appeal was dismissed.

Torena Ardrey is just out of high school and is working in three jobs - but still found time to enter the 150th Warwick Show Wearable Art Competition. “I completed a fashion and design course at high school with Wendy Woodford as our teacher,” Torena said. “She taught us so much more than just how to sew and mend garments. “We learnt about materials, designing outfits, what patterns to use and how to fit them. “I was born in Killarney, went to Killarney State School and then to Warwick State High School and I have just moved to Warwick which is very exciting. “I like living here but I would like one day to do further study in fashion design.” Vicki Buttrose, Warwick Show steward of the ’Contrasts Art Show’, is featuring Wearable Art for 2017 and is especially keen to support young people on their “artistic journey”. See Torena’s designs on the catwalk this Friday from 5pm in the Kevin Thumpkin Pavilion. For the full 2017 Warwick Show program see page 10.

Very near tragedy By Jeremy Sollars

Around 35 SES volunteers took part in the search, along with police and Killarney locals. Picture: SES IMAGE di and Inglewood. Other community members and police also took part. It is understood the man underwent surgery in Toowoomba on Sunday. His condition was unknown at time of printing and family members declined to comment this week on the incident or his present health state. Council employees involved in the search for the missing man met with council human resources staff on Monday morning and were offered counselling if they required it. The Free Times asked Mayor Tracy Dobie if she was concerned that the man’s behaviour may have been prompted by work-related stress stemming from the current workplace culture within the council, and what support had been or would be offered to the employee and his family. We also asked if the Mayor had spoken with family members or if she was planning to do this as a priority, but a statement released by the council on Monday morning simply

read, “Council has no comment”. Cr Dobie has previously told the media that the concerns over morale within council’s staff ranks had come from “a minority of individuals”. It is understood mental health concerns are held for other council employees who are said to be enduring “toxic” working conditions, including being monitored by supervisors staking out their work activities in parked vehicles, verbal abuse, role-shifting and lack of advancement and training. Others say they have been targeted by management for making complaints about repairs not completed on council equipment, in some cases with safety implications. As reported in February in the Free Times allegations of a toxic workplace culture within local government workforces are not confined to the Southern Downs Regional Council, as documents tabled in State Parliament late last year revealed.

Disturbing instances have also occurred in other Queensland councils - including the Cairns, Tablelands, Fraser Coast and Gympie Regional Councils - and in some tragic cases staff have ended up taking their own lives as a result. In November 2016 the independent State member for Cairns Rob Pyne spoke in State Parliament in favour of proposed Palaszczuk Government amendments to Queensland’s industrial relations laws designed to address workplace bullying within local government, by creating a specific “bullying jurisdiction” to address complaints against council managers. In 2015 Mr Pyne called for an inquiry into local government in Queensland, saying “bullying, nepotism and toxic working environments are common”. * Need help with depression or anxiety, or know a loved one who does? From front page Posts in recent days on the Free Times Facebook page have attracted several thousand hits, with the vast majority of those commenting expressing the view that the gates should stay where they are. After the special council meeting, planning and property portfolio councillor Neil Meiklejohn said the gates were “not a building” and therefore the planning scheme did not apply. “While the planning scheme does not apply to this proposal, and there is also no particular requirement for public notification, given the prominence of the gates and the length of time they have stood in Leslie Park, coupled with the knowledge that there are differing opinions in the community about whether the gates should stay or be relocated, the council has decided to invite feedback from the public to inform its decision,” he said. “The Glengallan Homestead Trust has indicated that if the proposed relocation proceeds, they would cover all costs associated with the relocation of the gates to the Glengallan Homestead and the reinstatement of the Leslie Park memorial site, along with interpretive signage. “The council encourages the community to get on board and have a say about the proposed relocation by making a submission during the public consultation period.” A council spokeswoman said the council had received previous requests for the gates to be relocated back to Glengallan Homestead. “Previous council decisions to retain the gates in Leslie Park were based on factors including that the gates were gifted to the Warwick community, the condition of the gates and whether they would be damaged during the relocation process,” the spokeswoman said. “Other factors are the extensive period of time that the gates have been in Leslie Park and are now part of the heritage of Leslie Park, and the impact that the removal of the gates would have on the aesthetics of the park. Mrs Fraser told the Free Times that the “oncederelict Glengallan is now a real asset to the local community and to future generations”. “The 150th anniversary celebrations will centre on Glengallan House, built in 1867, unoccupied since 1927 and rescued from ruin by a 2001 Centenary of Federation-funded restoration,” Mrs Fraser said. “Celebrations will culminate with the anniversary dinner on 16 September at which items long-removed from the deserted property will be presented for permanent display. “Anniversary projects include a move to have the original gates and sandstone pillars reinstated after relocation to Leslie Park in the 1940s when Glengallan head station buildings were being dismantled. It is a miracle that anything survived.” The public consultation period closes on Friday 14 April. Comments should be sent to Southern Downs Regional Council at PO Box 26, Warwick, Queensland, or via email to mail@sdrc.qld.gov.au.

Great gate debate

1125266-MB12-14

Glengallan Gates or Leslie Memorial Gates. Residents get to decide.

The Southern Downs Regional Council has refused to comment on an incident last week in which a council staff member allegedly tried to take his own life as a result of work stress and bullying. As reported online by the Free Times on Sunday, a major search and rescue operation was conducted in the Condamine Gorge area near Killarney on the afternoon of last Friday, 17 March and on the Saturday morning after a Killarney man and council employee was reported missing. The man was found by State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers in dense bushland between Condamine River Road and Spring Creek Road around 9.45am on Saturday, having spent the night at the location. It is understood the man inflicted self-harm in an apparent suicide attempt and at some point fell from a height after wandering into the bush sometime on Friday afternoon. The Free Times understands the man told his partner on Friday morning he was leaving for work as usual but he failed to show up, with work colleagues and his partner becoming concerned for his welfare when he was uncontactable during the morning and around lunchtime. When located by rescuers the man was given first aid treatment by an SES volunteer who is also a nurse, before being transported by stretcher from the bushland through difficult and slippery terrain to an ambulance which took him to Warwick Hospital. Around 35 SES volunteers took part in the search, with some travelling from Toowoomba, Goondiwin-

Kids up for a clip Casey’s tips

By Jeremy Sollars The clippers were working overtime at Warwick Central State School last Thursday as three willing volunteers shed their locks for the World’s Greatest Shave for the Leukaemia Foundation. Central students Kweller Manfield and Teresa Winstanley and local dad Richard Sims submitted themselves to the services of Talk ‘N Heads hairdressers Brittnie Banks and Sarah Fenton, who kindly volunteered their time. Between them the trio have raised close to $2000 to go towards

finding a cure for blood cancers, which are focus of this year’s Shave. Kweller told the Free Times he got involved as his soccer coach Tim Gaske lost his lower leg last year to a rare form of cancer, while Richard said he got his head shaved as “cancer affects most families at some stage and none of it is any good”. Fund-raising through the World’s Greatest Shave is still on - keep an eye out in local cafes and other businesses for collection boxes and visit www.worldsgreatestshave.com to find out more ... and check out some snaps from the Central SS Shave.

Shed demolition dust doesn’t settle By Jeremy Sollars Swanfels and surrounding residents are being urged to complete a Southern Downs Regional Council survey by the end of March on the replacement of shelter sheds the council demolished in January at the Swanfels Pioneer Memorial Park. A meeting of the new RANGE resident’s action group in Warwick on Monday night discussed the demolition, which continues to cause ire in the rural community east of Warwick and was the catalyst for the formation of the RANGE group. As reported in the Free Times, current and former local residents and former students of Swanfels State School were furious when the council razed the shelter sheds to the ground on Friday 20 January, less than 72 hours after announcing the sheds - which the council said were infested with termites - were to go. The larger of the two sheds was originally the playshed at the former Swanfels SS, while the smaller structure was formerly the school’s tennis shelter. Many have been blasting the council

for a lack of notice and pre-consultation and are adamant the sheds - each more than a century old - could have been repaired as a community project. The council has since opened a survey asking for community feedback on three options - “no replacement”, “replacement with a simple shed structure” and “reconstruction of a structure similar to the previous building”. Monday night’s RANGE meeting - attended by around 50 people - voted unanimously to write to the council supporting the third option of a ‘like for like’ reconstruction and urging return of individual surveys. A similar sentiment was expressed by around 70 people who attended a public meeting at the Swanfels Pioneer Memorial Park on Sunday 12 March. The council has also installed a traffic counter at the entrance to the park to gauge public usage. A council report - a copy of which was obtained by the Free Times - made it clear that termite damage to the sheds was not insurmountable, leaving many to question why the demolition was ever carried out.

The report by Osborn Consulting says that while “the building does not meet the current regulatory standards framework ... it is generally in good structural condition (and) damaged and missing elements ... could be remediated and/or replaced which may increase the life expectancy of the structure”. The council in its 2015-2016 Budget set aside $20,000 for the works referred to in the Osborn Consulting report. The decision to demolish the sheds is understood to have been made at officerlevel within council and was never put as a resolution by councillors at a general meeting. The Free Times previously asked the council for details of the cost of the Osborn report and the cost of the demolition itself and were refused, although council did confirm the demolition work was done by Stanthorpe firm Rob Wilkinson Building. For a copy of the survey, visit the Warwick council office or call the council on 1300 697 372. The surveys must be returned to the council by close of business on Friday 31 March.

The GrainX site at Allora.

Re-zoning for region By Jeremy Sollars Public consultation on controversial land re-zonings in the region proposed by the Southern Downs Regional Council closes next Friday 31 March. The re-zonings include a plan to allow intensive animal and noxious industries within Warwick’s Morgan Park buffer zone and to change the zoning of the GrainX site at Allora from residential to industrial. Warwick’s RANGE resident’s action group requested the council consider a moratorium on the GrainX re-zoning as the council is pursuing legal action against GrainX over alleged non-compliance with operating conditions, but the request was refused this week. The proposed amendments also include Amendments to the Flood hazard overlay;

Letters Casey’s tips Just disgusted Firstly, I would like to vent my utter disgust at the demolition of the play shed at Pioneer Park. This building was not a picnic shelter. It was the play shed from the Swanfels School. This structure was moved to the Pioneer Park to protect the heritage of the Swanfels School when the school was relocated. Every child that attended the Swanfels School from early in the 19th century until the school closing had an attachment to this building. It had more significance to the children of Swanfels than the school building itself. Everything happened here from socialising with the other students to consuming the hot flavoured milk that was delivered daily for the students. It was indeed a very important part of Swanfels school life. If it was not so important it would never have been relocated to Pioneer Park. Surely the name Pioneer Park should say something important has happened here. This also goes for the tennis shed, which was used by most occupants of the Swanfels valley on a regular basis. The tennis courts were a major part of the social life from my grandparents to when I was a child. We all used it. For somebody to come and destroy the heritage of the valley is a disgrace and whoever made the decision to demolish it should be ashamed of themselves. I know the current locals would have done any repairs that were needed if given the opportunity but this was not the case. As for what type of structure should replace it, I believe that the original shed should be reconstructed using as many of the original parts as possible. What has happened here equals to the people of Swanfels the demolition of the C.E. Barnes statue in Palmerin Street and replacing it with modern art! M. Johnson, Everton Hills.

my next question, since I’ve read so much about their content. Five vaccines used for measles, mumps, polio, varicella and diphtheria are developed from animal ingredients including cell cultures of chick embryos, monkey kidney cells, foetal bovine serum and embryonic guinea pig cell cultures. This was enough I thought, as how would this possibly be? There were others that contained aluminium, thimerosal and formaldehyde and some even contained live viruses. Trust, disappearing forever as surely no government would insist tiny precious babies be subject to such risk. What are the true vaccine facts? Why do caring people resist them? Why do governments then override parents or politicians to enforce vaccinations? Melba Morris, Allora.

Thumbs Up Thumbs Down Thumbs down To Southern Downs Regional Council for spending untold thousands on “safety items” at the perfectly fine intersections around Warwick including the corner of Grafton Street/Canning Street, while one block away Fitzroy Street east of the highway is still bumpier than a three-humped camel, even after council resealed it a few years ago. I bet if those bumps were across the road in front of the council offices, they would have been fixed quick smart.

Rule of law I asked a wise old friend why governments do not ban cigarettes, which are supposedly unhealthy and unwholesome. Money he answered because they, governments make piles out of it and smokers are inclined to die before they reach the age to draw an aged pension! How cynical is that! Then why do governments love vaccines was

Equestrian comp kicks in By Jeremy Sollars Warwick Horse Trials have a new committee for 2017, and are looking forward to a huge year of competition at their Morgan Park headquarters. Warwick’s home of equestrian eventing hosted two days of competition last weekend with around 200 competitors coming from as far away as Central Queensland and northern New South Wales. The first of four major competition weekends planned for 2017, Saturday featured dressage and showjumping, while competitors took to the cross country course on the Sunday. The grounds looked spectacular after last week’s rain and competition at the weekend wasn’t hampered by a couple of brief scuds. New club president for 2017 Mike Reed told the Free Times he was thrilled to have a new and hard-working committee on deck, and paid tribute to them for their efforts to reinvigorate the club and make some significant improvements to their facilities.

“What we’re seeing here is the result of five months of very hard work, since the new committee was formed last November,” Mike told the Free Times. “From an administrative point of view, we have our operating budgets and accounts in place and the physical work has happened in unison with that. “We have repaired a lot of old and obsolete equipment and have brought it back into use - we also got rid of around 10 years’ worth of old furniture and other junk. “We’ve also improved the safety standards of the facility in line with Equestrian Queensland requirements and standards, including our legal requirements and things like having an ambulance on site during competition, and evacuation procedures. “It’s also things like buying 40 walkie-talkies, so we can all be in constant contact while there’s competition going on. “This facility is the equivalent of any course in Queensland from a competition standard and presentation perspective.”

Equestrian Queensland technical advisers Des Hughes, left, and Michael Dalmau.

With Mike not coming from an equestrian background rather a corporate one - he says his new role has been “a learning curve”. Mike was asked by his daughter Tiffany - who has been involved with Warwick Horse Trials for some time - if he would step into the president’s role and lend the club the benefit of his experience. “But it’s not about me, it’s all about the committee, all of whom are women,” he said. “They have simply done a fantastic job in the last few months and that really needs to be highlighted - they make my role easy. “They are all very experienced, enthusiastic and capable - they have undertaken to accept the challenge.” Warwick Horse Trials offers extensive facilities suitable for cross country schooling, group clinics or workshops and various events and competitions. Your Guide to Building & Renovating ADVERTISING FEATURE

Rewards of renovation seen at home WITHIN many a householder is a builder or home renovator who is just looking for their first, or next, project. Renovating a home can be a rewarding experience in creative expression and skill building but inexperience often leads to unforeseen social, environmental and financial cost. Popular television home renovation programs may make it look easy but lifecycle outcomes from these renovations are often poor. Critical medium and long-term details such as thermal performance, and water and energy efficiency, are commonly overlooked to achieve a quick turnover that conceals problems and passes them on to the next owner. Inexperience often skips critical steps such as termite proofing, damp proofing and adequate surface preparation before fixing finishes, which reduce the life span and waste valuable resources. To be cost effective, choosing materials on an environmentally preferred basis requires careful sourcing, scheduling and quantity estimation to avoid waste. Those who choose the DIY path should evaluate their skills objectively at the outset and use professional tradespeople at critical stages. Consider using a licensed builder to get renovations and additions completed to completed structure and external building shell so

Milestone show grand opening By Jeremy Sollars Warwick Show chairman John Wilson believes our region’s country shows are experiencing a resurgence in popularity, as the Warwick Show prepared to celebrate its 150th anniversary. The 2017 Warwick Show will be officially opened tomorrow night, Friday 24 March, by Governor-General, Sir Peter Cosgrove, and will feature a grand opening parade, showcasing all that Warwick is renowned for, include our horsepower heritage, along with school groups and local emergency services. Mr Wilson said last Saturday’s Warwick Showgirl and Rural Ambassador Presentation evening was well-attended which augured well for the show itself. “The grounds are looking their best and the volunteers have been doing a tremendous job preparing for our 150th Show,” he told the Free Times. “We’ve been excited to see the way it’s been building. “Our country shows, I believe, are going back to what they always were traditionally - a place for people to get together, meet, have a chat and be part of a community. “I believe our shows play a real part in bringing the community back together.” Special features of the 150th Warwick Show include the United Petroleum Fuel Giveaway on Saturday, more covered areas around the showgrounds and a family-friendly area near the Geraghty Bat to enjoy the night entertainment programs. And don’t miss the historical displays in the Douglas Feez Pavilion honouring Warwick’s heritage in the 150th anniversary year of the show. Check out the full show program below and visit warwickshowandrodeo. com.au Jewel of a show for Syd Free Times Arts and Events columnist Sue Keong found Syd at the Warwick Showgrounds this week setting up his lapidary display in the Caged Birds Pavilion for the 150th Show starting this Friday. It was 48 years ago when Syd started Lapidary. He and his wife Betty have been fossicking all over Queensland. When asked what did he saw for this 150th Show he told Sue, “Well it won’t be the organisers fault if it not a success”. “John Wilson and his team have worked really hard pulling this all together. “I give credit to both Dr John Kiss and John Wilson who have lifted the profile and pushed to improve the show." 150TH WARWICK SHOW - 2017 PROGRAM All event times are approximate and subject to change FRIDAY 24 MARCH - BIG W PEOPLE’S DAY Douglas Feez Pavilion, Kevin Thumpkin Pavilion and Caged Birds Shed will be open from 10am to 8pm Sheep Dog Short Course Trial - starts 7am Showjumping - starts 8am Horse events - starts 9am - Local T-Shirt Day Dog Show - 10am Pet Parade - Judging from 11am in Kevin Thumpkin Pavilion Prime Cattle - judged from 9am, trophy presentations at 2.30pm, sale at 3pm Prime Lambs - judged from 9am, sale at 2pm Stud Cattle - Young Paraders and Judges Competition starts 3.30pm Stud Sheep - Junior Judges Competition - starts 6.30pm Chainsaw carving demonstration - all day adjacent to Dr John’s Fish and Chips Contrast Art Show - Opening at 5pm with Wearable Arts Fashion Parade in Kevin Thumpkin Pavilion FRIDAY NIGHT -

Decisions related to domestic life should involve all concerned parties. In other areas too, a shared effort brings generally better results than a solo approach. TAURUS—April 21-May 22

Time

This week could find you in a new and unexpectedly comfortable environment. At the workplace, there’s more room for negotiation than you once thought.

with Beatrice Hawkins

An employer may be usually demanding - you rise to the occasion. LEO—July 23-August 22 If challenging a friend, or an idea, the key is to hold on to your sense of perspective. Careerwise, you get wind of a new opportunity. A travel idea may materialize. VIRGO—August 23-September 22 Your charisma is strong at the work place, but consider it a bonus only. Be sure to come equipped with hard facts. The domestic situation brightens. Financial news means you may need a thorough review. LIBRA—September 23-October 22 Promoting your special talents could lead to significant strides at work. There may be more than meets the eye where a community project is concerned. The motto in romance is “handle with care”. SCORPIO—October 23-November 21 Don’t be overeager to say no to an offer or veto a plan. There could be some hidden benefits. Allow added time when visiting loved ones. Your counselling on an important subject could be very important. SAGITTARIUS—November 22-December 22 Your realistic approach and sense of humour help a loved one cope with a health worry. Although intuition is strong in romance, rely also on logic and past experience. CAPRICORN—December 23-January 20 Don’t hesitate to seek out contacts as you hunt for a job, home or the like. A difficult friendship situation shows signs of improvement. If comtemplating a surprise gift for a close friend - the gift could mean more than you realize. Be sure to keep relatives up to date where necessary. PISCES—February 20-March 20 Your workload expands but the key is not to accelerate your speed. Details are important and it may be time to recruit an apprentice. The domestic scene becomes brighter all the time. BIRTHDAY THIS WEEK You are a natural leader, a splendid role model and an influential and determined worker. Sometimes you are reluctant to share the limelight. Ahead accents a greater number of joint ventures than you are used to. Hard work and bright ideas begin to pay off. 12341982-CG12-17

“I wandered lonely as a cloud that floats on high o’er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, a host, of golden daffodils; beside the lake, beneath the trees, fluttering and dancing In the breeze.” No doubt the poet William Wordsworth drew a wonderfully evocative word picture when he wrote that poem after coming on such a view on 15 April, 1802, while out walking with his sister Dorothy. The poem was first published in 1807 and has been learnt by many generations of school children since. I hope it is still being taught in schools today. Daffodils are the March birth month flower and the symbolism is, as you would expect for some of the first flowers to appear after the northern hemisphere winter, is “rebirth” and also domestic happiness, respect, regard and friendship. Daffodils are the national flower of Wales and the symbol of cancer charities in many parts of the world. It is the town flower of Walcha in NSW. They contain a number of alkaloids, providing some protection for the plant. This has been exploited by science for use in medicine and traditional therapies and has resulted in the production of “galantamine” for the treatment of Azlheimer’s demetia. While it might not be a time for daffodils to flower here, it is time to start and think about enjoying cata-

logues and buying bulbs if you want to have flowers in spring. The variety I remember from my childhood is the King Alfred which I still feel is hard to beat for size, longevity and spectacular solid yel-

low colour. Daffodils do, however, come in a great variety of yellows, oranges, creams and whites and many different combinations of these. They come in large singles and doubles and tiny hoop petticoats

and every size and colour combination in between. Our climate here is hardly cold enough for daffodils to do really well as they thrive on cold winters. Certainly in my protected area of town I would not expect them to do well without considerable TLC starting with about six weeks in the vegie drawer of the fridge before planting. They like full sun to part shade while flowering and full sun and feeding with a complete fertiliser containing potash during and after flowering as this is when the bulbs are replenishing ready for next year’s flowers. It is important at this time to leave the leaves to naturally die down. This presented a problem when they were naturalised under deciduous trees in another garden I enjoyed as they looked untidy and the grass could not be cut for some time! They like a free draining, fertile soil and limited watering over summer so the bulbs don’t rot in the ground. Alternatively, they can be lifted after the leaves have died off, cleaned and stored in a cool dark place until planting in the next autumn. Many times bulbs are not planted deeply enough. The rule of thumb is twice the depth of the bulb. That is, if the bulb is three inches from top to bottom, the top of the bulb should be six inches below the surface. The reason for this is so that the stems will be strong and not fall over ... so that they can “flutter and dance in the breeze”! So, go to your preferred nursery or get a catalogue and plan a spot in the garden or a pot of colour to brighten the spring.

Water Rats in maiden sevens By Jeremy Sollars The Warwick Water Rats made history by fielding their first Women’s Sevens side at Risdon Oval last Saturday, taking on Gatton in a pre-season trial game. Coach Lauren Quinlan said the girls played well, winning both of Saturday’s games, with “a few minor injuries but overall everyone had great games and played extremely well, considering some girls have never played before”. Apart from the players pictured, the squad also includes Lisa Croft, Juliette Cronin, Emily Ranger, Grace Fender, Eloise Wiles, Shayne Hayes and Leanne Brown. All the best to these ladies for the 2017 season proper...

Test series in balance The

spin With Casey O’Connor email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com

Those who had written off Test cricket as outdated and out of favour have been left to rethink that take as the Aussies and Indians played out a tough draw in the third Test at Ranchi leaving the series in the balance at one all. Steve Smith delighted with an unbeaten 117 runs in the first innings and made it two centuries in the series. Smith’s batting style may be unconventional to the purists, but it is certainly effective. In this series, he clocked up another milestone joining the 5000 run club. At 27, he is the youngest Australian test player to do so. Not a bad effort considering he played 12 Tests before scoring his maiden century. It was great to see Maxwell finally get an opportunity to show that he is equally as suited to the longer form of the game. His 82 is certain to keep him in the mix. It has been a delight to watch the emergence of Matt Renshaw who just smiles his way through all of the Indian chatter and continues to improve. Although it is said he is still not dealing as well with the food. Peter Handscomb showed plenty of courage at the wicket in the final sessions at Ranchi and cricket fans are lucky the talented sportsman chose a career with the bat rather than the tennis racquet. The fourth and deciding Test gets underway next week at Dharamsala. It will be interesting to see what wicket is prepared for this game after all the chat about the Ranchi wicket. One thing is for sure the curators won’t do the Australians any favours. - Casey

MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR SCOTTY The family of the late John Scott has invited friends to join them at the Stanthorpe RSL on Sunday at 9.30am for a memorial service for John. Many were shocked to hear Scotty had lost his battle with cancer late last week and there is sure to be a large crowd of friends and former team-mates on hand to give him the send-off he deserves. Scotty was not just one of the finest footballers to ever lace on a boot in this district, he was a great bloke. As young aspiring footballers, Johnny Scott was someone who I and others looked up to. He made his mark here in Stanthorpe and went on to play in Toowoomba for Newtown. In 1966, he was selected to play for Toowoomba in the Bulimba Cup side. In that bygone era, the competition was widely regarded as one of the toughest in Australia. Last June he joined team-mates and opponents at the 50th Anniversary Reunion of that Bulimba Cup which was hosted by the then QRL Chairman Peter Betros. Dennis Pennisi, former Bulimba Cup team-mate and past captain coach of Stanthorpe, recalled last week that in addition to playing Bulimba Cup, Scotty was selected in a Toowoomba side that played a touring Pommie side and came off the bench in the game. Never one to overplay his hand, it was a feat he kept pretty quiet about. Following his stint playing in Toowoomba, Scotty returned to Stanthorpe and will be widely remembered by players from the Warwick and District competition of the late '60s for his speed and toughness in the centres. Scotty was not just a good footy player, he

The outstanding youngsters are sure to play a big part in the Stanthorpe grand final alongside their father. loved nothing more than a game of snooker and if you managed a win over John Scott at the snooker table, it was never well received. He was a regular playing in the Sunday morning snooker competitions at the RSL over many years. I was fortunate to play league alongside Scotty and know what a tough and uncompromising player he was, but more importantly I was privileged to call him a mate. Scotty’s pool cue is now back in the rack, and there will be an empty chair at the table when friends gather on Sunday with his sons Shane and Grant. Like me there will be many who will miss the twinkle in his eye, his wry comments and dry sense of humour. Rest assured, Scotty, you will be missed by many.

ROUND THREE KNOCKOUT Well! what a round of NRL that was. The upsets sent shockwaves through the competition and if this continues, tipsters and fans will be needing therapy well before the season is over. The casualty wards are expanding with a rising injury toll and the number of suspensions are growing at a similarly alarming rate. Jason Taylor became the first casualty in the coaching ranks just three games into the season. There has apparently been plenty happening behind closed doors at the Tigers prior to his sacking as players’ agents apparently flex their substantial muscle. The team looks to be in tatters and there are plenty of cracks appearing at board room level as well. Not much joy in Tiger territory. The Cowboys were without key players against the Sea Eagles but they looked flat and out of sorts and their loss KO’D plenty of tipsters. In a round that had plenty of highlights and low lights, the two standouts for me where firstly the win of the Titans against all odds. Perhaps, the Hayne plane needs to be kept in the hanger a little longer. Then there was the win of the Melbourne Storm and the successful return of Billy Slater. Slater admitted he was nervous before the game, but injected himself in to the play as only Billy Salter can and although a little rusty, there was plenty to like about his return if you are a Maroons or Melbourne supporter. It was the icing on the cake in what was another sensational game. Three clubs have been hit with big fines for flaunting the concussion rules, and you can bet more care will be taken by clubs and coaching and medical staff in future games. It was refreshing to see that it was not just Billy the Kid who made a return in round three -it looks like the refs have recalled the sin bin, and about time, too. Not sure how anyone could be confident of their tips this week. I’m certainly not. WEATHER NO WORRY The inclement weather did little to dampen the powder of the shooters in Inglewood for the

SSAA Military Pistol Competition held on Sunday. The Centrefire competition was won by Monika White who defeated Richard White and Iain Bowen. Ray Dudgeon was the winner of Rimfire. Runners-up were Stephanie Dudgeon and Jaden Clark. A reminder that the State Gallery Rifle Competition will be held on Saturday 8 April and Sunday 9 April. With some of the entrants scheduled to compete in the World Championships later in the year, this weekend event should be a great one, and spectators are most welcome to attend. This weekend the Inglewood club will be hosting Pistol competitions on Saturday and Sunday and there will also be a practice session for the Gallery Rifle Event. For further information, contact the club secretary SSAAQ49@gmail.com AFL WOMENS GRANDFINAL DEBACLE The first grand final of the AFL Women’s competition has turned into a debacle. The Brisbane Lions Ladies have come through the season undefeated, but will not be playing their grand final at the Gabba after the pitch was deemed unsafe earlier this week. The centre square at the Gabba was left severely damaged by the Adele concert several weeks ago, and despite the best efforts of ground staff the new turf has not taken sufficiently to play on safely. Disappointing that there are some who are pointing the finger at long time Gabba curator Kevin Mitchell. One not too well informed expert referring to Mitchell as the bloke who cuts the grass. Despite calls for the game to be transferred to the MCG (a neutral venue) the game has been transferred to Metricon. Entry to the Women’s final is free, but patrons will have to exit the venue and re-enter several hours later if they want to watch the Suns opening home game. That can’t be a good situation for either game, and is quite bizarre. Let’s hope it does not rob the women of a decent crowd in this inaugural grand final.

Local Sport ROUND ROBIN KICKSTARTS BRL The annual Border Rugby League pre-season round robin will be held in Inglewood on Saturday. The comp gets underway with the first game between last year’s grand finalists Roosters and Tigers kicking off at midday. With several clubs struggling for numbers, the competition has been reduced to eleven-a-side. BRL chairman Norm Crisp said earlier in the week that the Wallangarra Rams would not be fielding a side in the Round Robin. The Stanthorpe Ladies will also be missing this weekend. They are desperate for players. Crisp said both clubs must advise the BRL by 1 April, if they have the numbers to field teams in 2017. If Stanthorpe is unable to field a Ladies team, unfortunately the League tag competition which has been successful and popular since its inception three years ago will fold. If you are interested in playing, contact the club secretaries or Norm Crisp. Round Robin draw 12noon Inglewood v Tenterfield (Men) 12.45pmKillarney v Stanthorpe (Men) 1.30pm Tenterfield v Wallangarra (Ladies) 2pm Inglewood v Stanthorpe (Men) 2.45pm Tenterfield v Killarney (Men) 3.30pm Wallangarra v Tenterfield (Men) 4pm Men’s Final The Men’s teams will play 15 minutes each way with a seven minute half-time break. The Ladies will play 10 minute halves with seven minute breaks at half-time. Following the Men’s final, the Border Bushrangers side will be announced. The team will play in the South West trials in Miles next month. TOUGH DAY ON THE COURSE It was certainly a tough and wet day on the Stanthorpe Golf Course for the final round of the Pike Trophy. Only the early starters managed to complete the round. Fortunately, the winner of the Pike Trophy is decided by the best two scores from three rounds, and there were sufficient scores to determine a winner. John Spiller carded rounds of 71 and 77. His score of nett 136 was good enough to ensure his name joins previous winners on the trophy. Kay Webb had already posted scores of 96 for a nett 150 which was good enough to see her name added to the Ladies trophy as the 2017 winner. Club member Mark McCosker sponsored the Day’s stroke event for the Nuffield Cup and the round was shortened to nine holes due to the weather. Wes Smith handled the conditions better than most and took out the Cup. Greg Fraser has been returning consistent scores recently and was named Thanks to club member, Mark McCosker, for sponsoring the day’s stroke event for the Nuffield Cup. The men’s event was shortened to a nine-hole event for the men, and Wes Smith had best score to claim the cup. Greg Fraser, who has been returning consistent results lately, was awarded runner up prize. Pin shots on the day went to Tom Fittock at three, Allan Kerr at 12 and John Spiller at 17. Wes Smith collected pro-pins at 1/10 and 5/14 and Rob Reeves took 9/18. The ladies showed that the early birds get in a full round of 18 holes. Nikki Waterworth returned best score of nett 81 to claim a win. She also held the best approach shot at 17. Helen Jones was next best with nett 84. Congratulations and well done to all the ladies for finishing the round in such wet conditions. Ian Pickering, Mick O’Brien, Ian Harvey, Mark Hendry and Lyn Ludlow each collected a ball in the run down. On Saturday, Ian Harvey is sponsoring the end

ed the first points of the game shortly after kick off when Trent Baker scored, but it was the home side that took a 16-4 lead to the half time break. In the second half, it was all Wattles as they dominated shutting the Tigers out of the game and keeping them scoreless while they added another 14 points to win 30-4. Wattles have put together an impressive side this season, and import Jordan Gale looked all class and opened his account scoring in the second half. Other try scorers were Jim Johnson who crossed twice, Matt Duggan and Braydon Wilson. Matt Duggan kicked five conversions. Wattles had another win in Reserve Grade, defeating Souths 28-12 but the under-18s went down 40-22. Wattles take on the 2016 premiers this Saturday night at the Dane’s home ground. DANE’S TOO STRONG IN SEASON OPENER In a replay of the 2016 grand final, the Warwick Cowboys hosted the Pittsworth Danes to open the 2017 season. Unfortunately for the Cowboys, the Danes again proved too strong, coming away with a 24-10 win. Despite the loss, there are some encouraging signs for the Cowboys. Dylan Galloway Joe Fuimaono and Paul Cantwell all played well, and Brandon Vaughan who came off the bench earned plenty of praise from his coach Craig Mullaly. Pittsworth had a handy 18-6 lead at the break. In the second half, the Cowboys narrowed the gap to eight points when Fuimaono crossed for his second try of the game. The Cowboys could not break through the Pittsworth defence and the Danes scored their final try off an intercept. Try scorers for the Danes were James Dempsey (2), Braydon Gibbs, and Nick Schnitzerling. Alex Sinclair landed four goals. Joe Fuimaono scored both tries for the Cowboys and Dan Watson kicked one conversion. Warwick had wins in Reserve Grade (44-18), under-18s (46-16) and Second Division (20-18) In Round two, the Cowboys play Souths at Clive Berghoffer Oval on Sunday afternoon. SOUTHS INTO FINAL IN UPSET Weather conditions last Saturday prevented play in the Preliminary final of the Stanthorpe Cricket competition, forcing the game to be postponed to Sunday. The covers were lifted on Sunday and despite some ominous cloud cover, Valleys and Souths

took to the field. Valleys went into this game as warm favourites having had the wood on Souths for most of the season. Souths however have a never-say-die attitude that has seen them play in more grand finals than any of their counterparts and when a place in a final is on the line, they rise to the occasion. Sunday was no exception. Valleys batted first and found the conditions tough and the bowling hard to get away. Jordan Lanza and captain Ben Staley combined to dismiss dangerous opener Curtis Allen for only six runs. After 10 overs, Valleys were 1/38 but lost three wickets in quick succession. Dave Gavin (26) was the best of the Valleys batsmen on a day where the ball dominated. Jordan Lanza and younger brother Liam took six wickets between them. Souths fielded well, making the most of their opportunities and holding on to their catches. Souths had their own share of troubles early in their innings, losing openers Adam Bonner and Jordan Lanza cheaply. In a similar pattern to Valleys innings, Souths middle order were shaky, but Ben Staley steadied the ship playing a captain’s knock of 31. There were just five runs required for victory when he was caught behind by keeper Dave Gavin off the bowling of Sandro Stefanon. It was left to Liam Lanza and Singh to get Valleys over the line. The final score 7/113. Valleys were left to ponder what might have been. The team’s batting record, good fielding and the safe hands of their players letting them down when it most counted. Souths now meet RSL in the grand final on Saturday, and both sides will be hoping for more favorable conditions. Souths have a strong line-up, and will be looking for Jordan Lanza who walked away with an armful of trophies at the Stanthorpe presentation evening to fire with bat and ball. If Souths are to contain the explosive RSL batsmen, their bowlers will need to bowl accurate line and length and not give away the number of wides they did in Sunday’s game. RSL will retain strong favoritism going in to the final, but as Valleys discovered you can never underestimate Souths. CRICKETERS CELEBRATE SEASON Stanthorpe and Tenterfield cricketers celebrated what has been a successful if not sometimes frustrating season on Saturday night at the annual presentation of trophies. Sam Dowie was named player of the Year; Jordan Lanza Colt of the year and Liam Lanza Junior Colt of the Year. The Umpires Player of the Year award was Jordan Lanza who also picked up the Best batting Aggregate after scoring 448 runs for the season. Not to be outdone, his brother Liam also picked up the trophy for most wickets (21). Sandro Stefanon was named Davis Shield Rep Player of the Year and also picked up his first hat-trick. The Mitchell Shield Player of the Year was Andrew Einam. OTHER AWARDS Round one winner - Wanderers Round two winner - RSL Round three winner - RSL & Valleys tied Round four winners - Valleys Minor Premiership - Valleys Most catches - wicketkeeper Andrew O’Brien Bowling Avg - Steve Martin (3.5) Batting Avg - Sam Dowie The Col Aiken Trophy for Service to Cricket was presented to Mark Lanza and John Hendry for their work throughout the season on the preparation of the wickets and the ovals in what has been a tough year.

It was nice to welcome George and Coral to the club last Thursday. Coming up today Thursday 30 Mar at 1pm will be social bowls plus one competition game - A grade singles - C. Weier v C. Hope. It was unfortunate, but the club's twilight bowls was washed out last Friday night. The club may try and have one more game of

Twilight bowls on 7 April, but that will have to be confirmed. One game of men’s pairs was played on Saturday - R. Tartan, D. Scotney d Prickles, V Hemmings 24-16. Play starts at 1pm, with names to be in between noon and 12.30pm. There will be prizes on offer, as well as a chance to win the jackpot, which now stands at $46.05 + $1 per Saturday player. Phone the club between 11am and noon if you would like a game.

They may have been dressed in white but as the rain tumbled down on the CF White Oval on Saturday it was left to the birds to inspect the pitch, not the cricketers. of month medley 4BBB stableford. It is a shot gun start at 11.45am. There will be a shot gun start at 11.45 am with registration by 11.30am. Time sheet is on the board at the club. Players will be hoping for better conditions this week, despite the gloomy forecast. MARYVALE INTO FINAL Minor premiers Maryvale have done it the hard way, but on Saturday they will take their place in the Warwick Cricket grand final after they returned to winning form last weekend in the Preliminary final against Redbacks. The Maryvale bowlers got an early breakthrough, but Redbacks batsmen Coen Slatter (60) and Jamie Saunders fought back. The partnership was broken with the score on 89. Good bowling performances from the Maryvale bowler saw wickets tumble and Redbacks were dismissed for 121. Maryvale’s middle order have looked a little fragile in recent weeks but when it counted they found the form that took them through the season at the top of the ladder. With the score at 2/70, it was the middle order batsmen Gordon, 74, and Steketee, 70 who helped push the score to 258 at the end of the innings. The father and son duo of Bourke bowlers Kevin and Keiran shared the bowling honours. Kieran Bourke finished his 10 overs with 4/29 and not to be outdone Kevin took three wickets for just eight runs in eight overs bowled. Saturday’s grand final is certain to be a thriller. The last two games between the Warwick Hotel Colts and Maryvale could hardly have been closer. The winner of the 2017 Condamine Cup is going to have to play exceptionally well to lift the trophy. The 50-over game gets underway at 10am with players to be at the ground by 9.30am. The Reserve Grade grand final will be an all-Allora affair after Allora Hotel Rascals had a comprehensive win over Inglewood in their knock out semi-final. The win puts them into the grand final where they will play Allora. The 40over game will be played at Mayhew Oval commencing at 10am. Players are asked to be at the ground at 9.30am. Presentations for match and season awards will be held at Slade Oval at the completion of the game. PROMISING START FOR WATTLES Wattles opened their TRL season with a big win over the Souths Tigers at Platz Oval. Souths post-
