well worTh The visiT By Kath Gannaway “IF YOU believe me, my young friend, there is nothing - absolutely nothing, half so worth doing as - simply messing around ... at Ratty and Moles Riverbank Antiques.” That may be a slight misquote of the loveable Ratty of Wind in the Willows fame (it was actually boats that he was so enamoured of) but there’s no doubt he, and his friend Mole, would have found the whole Warrandyte village, riverbank, cafe-bar, antiques scene very much to their liking. Owner Toni Ring has brought together 17 dealers who scour Australia and make regular visits overseas to find the gorgeous treasure trove of goodies that make the shop an absolute pleasure. Ratty and Moles Riverbank Antiques has been providing a delightful shopping experience for locals and visitors to Warrandyte for 25 years. Overlooking the Yarra River, it truly is a vibrant, colour-filled treasure trove of fascinating goodies. Shelves are laden with all kinds of antiques and bric-a-brac, antique linen and lace, the finest clocks, china, glass and crystal, gold and silver jewellery, as well as stunning costume jewellery, beautiful oriental collectables, small furniture items, vintage toys and more. For those who have a particular item in mind, Toni provides a finder service - and she has all the best contacts to come up with the goods. The relaxed atmosphere and helpfulness of the dealers makes Ratty and Moles Riverbank Antiques the perfect place to browse and to buy. The dealers are regularly in the shop and happy to share their love and knowledge of antiques in general, and their specific area of expertise. “We find it a pleasure to assist people to find that unique and exquisite purchase for themselves, or as a gift for a much loved and special person,” Toni said. There is nothing quite like a personal visit to Ratty and Moles Riverbank Antiques, but for inspiration, visit their Facebook page and be tempted by regular photos of the beautiful collections. Ratty and Moles Riverbank Antiques is at 207 Yarra Street, Warrandyte. Phone 9844 4207.

a day in warrandyTe By Jodie SymondS WHETHER it’s rain, hail or shine there’s loads to do in Warrandyte. 9am For a stunning breakfast you can’t go past Warrandyte Cafe. Located on 61 Yarra Street, this little gem has some scrumptious meals including eggs on toast with their signature relish. There’s great news for your furry friends too, as pets are allowed to sit in on your breakfast conversation. 10am It’s time for some fun (and a little bit of history). A short drive up Whipstick Gully Road will take you to the Victory and Whipstick Gully mines. The remains from the mines include the Victory shaft, which is still in place, however it has been fenced off for safety reasons. This particular part of Warrandyte was a big part of the town’s gold mining history. 11am If the weather permits, the Yarra River is the perfect spot to sit back, relax, listen to the birds and watch the ducks play in the water. Don’t forget to bring your picnic rug and a book. 12pm Burger lovers rejoice! The Food for All Seasons cafe on 254 Yarra Street has a range of great meal options, but you cannot go past their chicken burger. The rustic-style cafe with friendly and welcoming staff say hello to you as soon as you step in the door, offering you water right away. Their chicken burger is a must for any foodie; it comes with aioli, lettuce, beetroot, tomato and caramelised onion. 2pm Don’t forget, a visit to the lolly shop in the main street is a must for any sweet tooth. 3pm The perfect opportunity to relax at one of Warrandyte’s many cafes for a quiet coffee and a piece of cake. 6pm Altair Restaurant is known for its stylish setting, fine wine and exceptional food. You can’t go past the grilled lamb cutlet with charred leek, sheep’s milk, sumac, green olive and ginger. This stylish restaurant also offers a wide range of Yarra Valley wines to accompany each delicious dish. If you can fit in dessert as well, the Dulce De Leche is a showstopper.

A world of ArT ANd crAfT By Jodie SymondS IT’S unique, and it’s the Stonehouse Gallery. A visit to Warrandyte is not complete without a stop into the Warrandyte icon. It is well-known for its beautifully crafted art, but is unique because it is run by 16 female artists who enjoy working in an environment that allows visitors to escape into a craft wonderland. Stonehouse Gallery offers unique handmade jewellery, pottery, paintings, home wares, accessories, sculptures, gift cards and textiles. With the weather becoming cooler as autumn settles in, colours of brown and orange fill the streets of Warrandyte. It’s getting to that time of the year where the nights are getting cool -

thankfully, Stonehouse Gallery has hand-knitted throw rugs and wraps to keep you warm during the autumn months. The artists are passionate about what they do, and are always willing to offer friendly advice from their 45 years of experience in the field. Trails Many visitors are drawn to the natural beauty on the mountain.

sense of advenTure By Peter Douglas UP FOR a new challenge? Well, a giant one awaits you and it’s just around the corner - or, in this case, a short drive up a 1250m mountain. While perhaps better known for its snow-play opportunities during winter, the many hiking trails along Mt Donna Buang present many ways to reconnect with nature this autumn. By unlimited, the choice is genuinely yours - whether you’re after a casual stroll, achieving a fitness goal, or something much more adventurous. So what distance are we talking? For some, just strolling around the summit may be inspiration enough. While for others, the climb up the 21-metre observation tower - with panoramic views across the park - may provide enough adventure. Having said that, some of the more popular trail options range from between 1km to 6km, with a relatively moderate grade and easy-to-follow trails. Popular options as follows (estimated times only, from www.parkweb.vic. gov.au.): ■ Mt Donna Buang to 10 Mile Picnic Area Distance: 1.2km; Time: About 30 minutes; Grade: Moderate ■ Mt Donna Buang to Mt Boobyalla Distance: 2.5km; Time: About 1.5 hours; Grade: Moderate ■ Mount Donna Buang return via Mount Victoria and 10 Mile Distance: 6km; Time: about 3 hours; Grade: Moderate What to look out for? If you’re lucky enough, you might come across a Superb Lyrebird, which commonly frequent the region.

They can often be seen foraging on the roadside, particularly in the cooler months. Also, let’s be honest - we might not want to hear it - but in the warmer months, keep your eyes peeled for snakes. What to do? Apart from taking in the beautiful surrounds, grab your best pal and just go for a walk - no excuses, please! You don’t have to go too far to find yourself completely lost in Mt Donna Buang’s beauty. There are plenty of picnic tables too, along with a picnic shelter, so grab a quick sandwich and a flask and make the most of what this great destination offers. So I’m keen, how do I get there? From Melbourne, follow the Maroondah Highway through to Lilydale, turning right onto the Warburton Highway. Once in Warburton, follow the signs to the Rainforest Gallery, the 10 Mile Picnic Area and/or the summit. Please drive carefully. Cyclists love the winding, challenging roads up the mountain, particularly over the weekends. Any hidden secrets? At the bottom car park, which is commonly used in the winter months, there is a beautiful spring that flows with crystal-clear water. Make sure you fill up your water bottle before you hike - you may not have tasted anything better.

By Peter Douglas THE Yarra Ranges is simply a delight for birdwatchers, with such diverse landscapes all within close proximity. Even more exciting is the fact the endangered Powerful Owl and the Helmeted Honeyeater call the region home, as well as the Superb Lyrebird. Though this represents only a small portion of the birdlife that thrives in the region. Finches, the pilotbird, grey currawong, rosellas, kookaburras and cockatoos can be observed, too. Also, magpies, ducks, large-billed scrubwren, yellow-tufted honeyeater and pink robin. From open farmlands to rainforests, birdwatchers are spoilt for choice when it comes to established parks and reserves. For example, Badger Weir - out of Healesville - the Rhododendron Gardens at Olinda and the appropriately named Birdsland at South Belgrave are just a few opportunities at the ready.

A VISIT to Grants on Sherbrooke is always a pleasure. Located in the Dandenong Ranges this well known refreshment icon has catered to tourists and locals since the 1950s. Owner/operators, Cheryl and Geoff Campbell completed refurbishments late in 2005 doubling the size of the original building. Grants specialise in Australian seasonal cooking and guests can dine in air conditioned comfort indoors or by the cosy log fire in winter. In summer, guests can dine alfresco among the natural bush setting.

Browse in the Gift Shop, which has one of the largest ranges of quality Australiana Gifts and Souvenirs east of Melbourne.

Our services include: • New Menu • Licensed Café • Functions - from 15 to 120 guests • Devonshire Tea

In some areas in the Dandenong Ranges, including Sherbrooke Forest and Kallista, there’s a chance to spot a Superb Lyrebird. At Grants Picnic Ground, guests can enjoy an up-close-and-personal experience with the local birdlife, including many cockatoos and rosellas (seeds available for purchase). With all this in mind, don’t forget about the Healesville Sanctuary. Their Birds of Prey show, which features the awe-inspiring wedge-tailed eagle, should not to be missed. A pair of binoculars and a good field guide are essential equipment, and be sure to take along a notebook to write down your ‘finds’ and record descriptions for those birds that don’t seem to match up! Two excellent books are ‘Birds of the Yarra Catchment - And where to find them’ by Peter Mason and ‘Simpson and Day Field Guide to the Birds of Australia’ published by Penguin Books. Most of all, set out with a great sense of adventure and anticipation. You never know what you may find!

The floor to ceiling windows in the restaurant allow patrons to view the natural Australian bushland with rosellas, kookaburras, lyrebirds, cockatoos, wallabies and even the occasional echidna wandering around. Grants is the only place in Victoria where visitors are permitted to hand feed the native birds. 9am to 5pm in feeding area only.

According to veteran stall-holder Doug Armstrong, it’s the lure of the unexpected, the great variety of stalls, and the friendly community atmosphere. Doug runs one of market’s most fascinating stalls, and is in fact their longest-serving stallholder. Old tools and collectibles, books and toys, rabbit traps, pots and pans, saddles, household bits and pieces, thing-a-majigs, and whats-a-ma-callits, bits of this and that ... you just never know what you’ll find on any given market day. Doug has attended markets around the Yarra Valley for decades and says mixed markets such as Healesville are so popular because they have something for everyone - mum, dad and the kids. “It encourages people to stroll and look ... even the dads, and it makes it an enjoyable experience,” he said. Doug’s a bit of an observer of human behaviour too. “People can buy tools, or anything, at the big stores, but anyone who has grown up through the older families always come back to the older, reliable tools,” he says. The Healesville Community Market, held on the first Sunday of the month at the River Street car park, and on the third Sunday of each month at Coronation Park, has many stall-holders just like Doug who love what they do, what they sell and the people they sell to. The first-Sunday market regularly has more than 100 stalls offering everything from fresh produce and home-made goodies to books, plants, jewellery, hardware and clothing, shoes, beautifully hand-crafted furniture and toys, decor items and so much more. Community groups such as Healesville Scouts tap into the market’s vibrant population with aromatic onions, sizzling sausages and, of course ... sauce! While the third-Sunday market is smaller, there is always a great variety of stalls on offer and bargains to be had.

AROUND THE RANGES

TwO wHEElS ON ROAD TO fREEDOm

With a selection of views and winding roads, the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley is a two-wheeled enthusiast’s paradise. By Derek SchlennSteDt THE open road, wind in your face and beautiful winding roads as far as the eye can see. On most weekends motorcycle riders flock to the Yarra Ranges and often stop at the many beautiful townships such as Olinda. They travel for the variety of roads the region has to offer two-wheel enthusiasts. From tight and twisty to long gentle sweepers, the Yarra Ranges has it all. Mt Dandenong An entire mountain, ask riders? Believe it. Mt Dandenong offers riders a plethora of roads that branch off the popular and relaxing Mt Dandenong Tourist Road. A 30-kilometre trip, Mt Dandenong Tourist Road winds its way up the Dandenong Ranges and gives riders brief panoramic views of the eastern suburbs. Riders can stop at the Kalorama lookout for a view of the Warburton

Ranges and Silvan Reservoir, or head off along Ridge Road to the Mount Dandenong Observatory for stunning views of the city. With plenty of quaint little towns dotted through the ranges, riders can stop for a brief coffee and relax in the shade of Sherbrooke forest. Its natural beauty, panoramic views and flowing corners are the perfect entree for riders seeking an easy and relaxing ride, or can be used as the perfect starting point for riders who want to continue on to greener pastures in the Yarra Valley. The Black Spur Some 30 kilometres of bliss between Healesville and Marysville, the Black Spur is considered by motorcyclists and car drivers alike as the holy grail of roads. Only an hour’s drive from Melbourne, the Black Spur mixes long, sweeping corners with tight twisty roads, all set against a lush rainforest backdrop. Even on the hottest and brightest summer days, the light is unable to penetrate through the towering mountain ash and huge ferns that line the side of the road. The air becomes cool and temperate and gives those in leathers a refreshing retreat. Snaking its way through lush green forests and gliding through continuous S-bends, with its beautiful scenery, a smooth surface and a series of hairpin turns, the Black Spur claims the title of one of the best roads in Victoria. Reefton Spur With a 95 per cent corner ratio along its 19-kilometre length and a combination of medium paced tight corners, quiet roads and stunning views, made Reefton Spur is one of the most infamous roads in Australia. Reefton Spur is what the Adelaide Hills are to Adelaide, what the Old Pacific Highway is to Sydney - it’s an iconic, legendary patch of road that has become a go-to destination for car enthusiasts and motorcycle riders. According to one particular rider, who felt it necessary to count, the road up Reefton contains about 170 bends all condensed within a 19-kilometre stretch. In anybody’s language, especially bikers, this means only one thing - pure heaven.

“Winemaking is a profession ThaT combines agriculTural and scienTific knoWledge WiTh logic and creaTiviTy.…”

Wine, Women and vinTage

Nicole Esdaile. Picture: CONTRIBUTED

26 AUTUMN 2017

By Nicole esdaile FEBRUARY, March and April are the grape harvest months (vintage) in our beautiful, cool-climate Yarra Valley wine region and winemakers look forward to the period with nerves, excitement and a little dread. They are nervous because the quality of the fruit is so dependent on the weather, particularly as the fruit is ripening. Will vintage 2017 be really hot and dry as it was last year when all varieties ripened quickly, early and simultaneously, stretching winery resources above capacity? Will the autumn cold and rain come too early, before the fruit reaches optimal ripeness, as happened in 2011? Or will it be an ideally mild, long vintage as in 2015? Vintage is a really exciting and often fun time in the winery, with fruit from the year’s labour arriving and extra and often foreign staff adding to the social atmosphere and buzz. It is also a time of ridiculously long days and weeks of hard, physical work, brain strain, missed meals, reduced family time and complete exhaustion for all involved. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, when the Australian wine industry was surging, about 20 per cent of winemakers and winemaking students were women. Today, less than 10 per cent of Australia’s 1600 or so winemakers are women and while there are 60 or so wineries in the Yarra Valley, where wine is made for over 150 wine brands and 80 cellar doors, less than 10 women will be ‘leading the team’ or playing significant winemaking roles in this vintage.

It is an interesting statistic and clearly the reverse of the trend in these days of gender diversity targets. Winemaking is a profession that combines agricultural and scientific knowledge with logic and creativity. It involves significant physical activity and endurance, particularly on the lower rungs of the career ladder, but it does not require unreasonable or masculine brute strength. The long hours during vintage and the lack of work-place flexibility make combining work and family really difficult and prevent many women reaching their full potential. Those that do may have their own or family wine businesses, consider their choices, or have unusually supportive employers. Some of the best winemakers in the country are women and they are here in the Yarra Valley. Most will participate in the International Women in Wine Awards in London in September this year, and they await Vintage 2017 with much anticipation. Of course, it is not only the ladies and it is not only the winemakers that make a successful vintage - from the vineyard to the cellar there are many, many dedicated contributors. We wish everyone the best of luck, safe travels and we look forward to enjoying the products of all the hard work in a few months time. (Nicole Esdaile is a winemaker and consultant based in Healesville.) Touristnews

With many top accommodation sites within Ferntree Gully, the highly popular 1000 Steps attraction makes the hot-spot an attractive option. It’s the worst-kept secret in the Dandenong Ranges, but one of the best places around to exercise and soak in nature at the same time. The Kokoda Track Memorial Park, known to locals and visitors as The 1000 Steps, is a three-kilometre stretch running into the Dandenong Ranges National Park. Visitors should bring water for the trip, especially on warmer days - or visit the cafe for a refreshment before or after the trek. Though the site only has about 800 actual steps, it is named The 1000 Steps in reference to soldiers who walked the Kokoda Track - the site is a memorial for Victorian veterans of the campaign. It is said the steps resemble the Golden Staircase - 2000 steps cut by the Australian Army’s engineers into a track between Uberi and Imita Ridge - and plaques along the trail pay tribute to the soldiers who died during the World War II campaign. Visitors be warned - the site is extremely busy in mornings and on weekends, and finding a park can be difficult. Those who do get a park are warned to not leave valuables in their cars, as the area has been targeted by thieves in the past. The walk is open from 6am-9pm. GreAT oUTDoorS One Tree Hill is set at a prime viewing location and is positioned above the infamous 1000 steps. (Don’t worry, you don’t have to hike them to get there.) With city views peeking in between the trees, the picnic ground offers a simple and relaxing retreat among the gumtrees. The location is equipped with several picnic tables, two sturdy picnic shelters, toilets, electric barbecues, and of course plenty of grassy areas where you can lay your picnic blanket to enjoy a meal among the peace and quiet of one of the Dandenong’s premier picnic locations.

By Derek SchlennSteDt THE Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley is home to several scenic and picturesque picnic sites where you can lay down the picnic blanket and enjoy some cheese, wine and good company. One Tree Hill Picnic Ground Despite the name “One Tree Hill” there are in fact many, many trees surrounding the picnic ground. The name was given to the location after forest clearing in the 1860s left one solitary tree standing as a survey marker, but today there are thousands of leafy green trees there.

Birdsland Reserve A gorgeous reserve with great walking paths and a variety of wildlife, Birdsland covers a massive 75 hectares of prime bush preservation. Despite its 75-hectare size, the reserve is tucked away behind Belgrave South and is only accessible via a small dirt road that branches off from Mount Morton road - because of its location it can often be tricky for visitors to find. But it’s well worth finding as Birdland boasts an amazing 130 different native birds, from raptorial birds of prey such as the wedge-tailed eagle and powerful owl to various species of ducks and parrots. Birdsland also sustains over 200 species of native plants, making the reserve an ecological powerhouse where there is always something to see. The reserve offers barbecues, picnic tables and lakes for visitors, and the number of various walking tracks that branch off from the main path means you can easily digest even the most heavy picnic foods.
