autumn
Shirley’s garden gates open for all By Kath Gannaway
Shirley Carn - catch her in her natural environment. 166131 Picture: ROB CAREW
Autumn in the Yarra Valley and the Dandenong Ranges is a spectacular time of year to be garden-hopping. The heat’s off, there’s a sprinkle of rain to bring some green back into the countryside, and the leaves are changing day by day to create the magnificent spectacle of autumn colour. It’s time to escape the air-conditioned four walls and go exploring other people’s gardens. One of those other people is legendary Dandenong Ranges gardener, Shirley Carn. At the glorious age of 81, Shirley is a veteran of the open garden phenomena that gardeners and non-gardeners alike have embraced as a favourite pastime. This year Shirley’s Australian plant garden in Monbulk will be open as part of Open Gardens Victoria to raise funds for Oxfam. Only three years old, it is the fifth garden created by the knowledgeable and talented gardener and, she says, it is the last time she will throw open her garden gates. Shirley opened her first garden in Silvan just a short while after her son had died of HIV Aids. “I opened the garden for Aids when it wasn’t fashionable or safe,” she says with a tone that flags the stigma, fear and misinformation that was thick in
Autumn colour at The Singing Gardens of C J Dennis in Toolangi. 166131 Picture: KATH GANNAWAY the air in those days. Over the years, her love of gardening and humanity, has seen her share her magnificent gardens to support important causes, starting with the Burnett Institute which was at the forefront of early research into HIV Aids. “I’ve opened the gardens for Peter

Mac ... I’ve lost four people with cancer, and for Doctors Without Borders,” she says. “I’ve checked them all out, and I believe you’re meant to support these good people.” There is joy also in being generous with her wealth of knowledge and with the bountiful beauty that comes with getting her hands in the dirt and creating interesting gardens. The people who visit range from young people hungry for inspiration and knowledge, to overseas visitors who are fascinated with Australian native plants, and others who just love to meander, admire and chat with a fellow garden-lover. “Gardeners are lovers ... ,” Shirley says reflecting on the nature of those interactions. “When you’re older, you may as well have a passion, and it may as well be gardening,” she says. It’s a casual statement that doesn’t fully reflect the years of dedication, learning and creativity that has gone into the gardens that have brought pleasure to thousands, and desperately needed funds to life-saving research and humanitarian projects. If the weekend of 22 and 23 April is Shirley Carn’s last open garden, it will be a chance to see the master gardener in her natural environment, and perhaps say thanks for all she has done over the years.

autumn
A true pumpkin fit for a coach By Derek Schlennstedt The proof is in the pumpkin ... or is it the pudding ... either way, there is definitely something in this pumpkin pertaining to its enormous size. Weighing close to 200kgs, this pumpkin, grown by Mount Evelyn’s Matthias Scoriot hopes to reign supreme at the Alowyn Gardens Giant Pumpkin Competition on Sunday 2 April. One of several pumpkin seeds Matthias planted in December that he has been caring and nurturing for was the smallest and worst seedling that has grown to be the biggest pumpkin. Matthias says that he placed the smallest seedling in a bad position in the garden and the so-called ‘runt’ of the pumpkins has since outgrown the others and become a true pumpking. “When I was putting my seeds down, I had my favourites, the worst seedling, well I didn’t put that one in the best position,” he said. “It’s always a surprise with pumpkins; there might have been a good luck factor.” Pumpkin growing is best done in warm temperate weather and anything over 40 degrees is deemed too hot and can damage the pumpkin- luckily this summer has been quite favourable for pumpkin growers. Having brooded over his pumpkins for the last few months, Matthias says that there’s no magical secret or routine to making them grow, and you certainly don’t have to sing to them - all that’s needed, is hard work. ‘It’s a bit of work keeping on top of
it and caring for them. “You have to make sure the vine does not break or get damaged, you have to check for fungus, take good care of the soil and use a bit of compost, and it’s important to keep burying the vine so it can create more roots,” he says. With a passion for gardening, Matthias says he has always wanted to grow pumpkins to enormous sizes and says he does it more for the fun of it.
“Since I was a kid, I have been gardening, and I always wanted to give it a try, it’s a lot of fun,” he says. All the biggest pumpkins from the Yarra Valley will be on display to take part in the Giant Pumpkin Competition held at Alowyn Gardens every year. Once again, there are five classes - Giant Atlantic Pumpkin, Biggest Queensland Blue, Biggest Butternut, Biggest Zucchini and the Most Unusual Pumpkin.
Each class will be divided into two sections - Under 12 and Open, giving everyone a chance to show off their extraordinary pumpkinalia! The Allowyn Gardens Pumpkin Competition is on Sunday, 2 April from 10am to 5pm and it goes without saying that pumpkin will be the flavour of the day with pumpkin soup and pumpkin scones aplenty, as well as Asian street food on offer. Unfortunately, the largest pumpkins
won’t be for eating as these pumpkins are only used for their size and Matthias says they aren’t too tasty. “They are edible but ... . they don’t taste so nice.” For full details of the event visit www.alowyngardens.com.au, or just phone 9730 2400 to register over the phone. Entries close on Friday, 31 March.

Chestnuts and pears ... perfect! 166048
The renowned product is now available in Australia. 164303
Gutter guards success story The Gutter Protector foam wedge gutter guard was first used in America about 15 years ago with great success. It’s now also used widely throughout Europe and Canada, again with the same great success. Finally, it is here in Australia, first introduced to Melbourne as Gutter Guard Melbourne and now supplying the whole of Australia as Gutter Protector Australia.
The gutter guards are specialised filtering foam that has been used in filtering water in all sorts of industries for many decades; it cannot absorb or hold water due to its specialised cell structure, and water just flows straight through gutter guard into your clean gutters, making it the best gutter guard available. Gutter guards contain a UV formula to prevent cell degradation from the sun, a biocide formula to prevent the formation
of mould, algae and the growth of seeds. The foam wedge gutter guard’s rain handling capacity is rated at 10 times the standard rainfall; this capacity is essential to be able to cope with large water flow coming down from your roof valleys, making Gutter Protector the perfect gutter guard system. Chestnut powerballs By Kath Gannaway Pears and chestnuts are just two delicious examples of the fabulous seasonal fare that is abundant throughout autumn in the Yarra Valley and the Dandenong Ranges. Making the most of local fresh produce is not only a healthy option, it’s a great way to support the local growers. Keep an eye out for drive-in orchard sales or pop into a local market for fresh from the tree fruit, and for some extreme chestnut action, don’t forget the Kalorama Chestnut Festival on 7 May at Kalorama Reserve. Roasted chestnuts are synonymous with autumn in Australia and the festival is a great place to discover just how ver-
satile they are. Here is a recipe to inspire! Chestnut, Pear and Orange Powerballs* are great for a picnic or school lunches and Maggie Beer’s delicious Chocolate and Fresh Pear Pudding** is the ultimate autumn comfort food. Chestnut, Pear and Orange Powerballs Ingredients: 500g fresh chestnuts 1 tbs honey 2 tbs vegetable oil Juice of 1 orange 100g dried pear, roughly chopped 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp sea salt 1 tbs white sesame seeds Additional black and white sesame seeds to coat
Method: 1. Place chestnuts in a medium saucepan with about 1 litre of water, so the chestnuts are fully submerged. Bring to the boil, and boil for one hour, topping up water if required. Drain and cool in cold water. When cool enough to handle, open and scoop each nut out. 2. Place chestnuts in a mortar and pestle or food processor, and grind until smooth. 3. Add the honey, vegetable oil, orange juice, pear, cinnamon and 1tbs of the white sesame seeds. Process or ground until well combined. 4. Roll tablespoons of the mixture into balls, and coat the additional black and white sesame seeds. Makes 36 balls.

Trail link mooted By Derek Schlennstedt A new cycling and walking track that would link the existing trail near Woori Yallock to Healesville, Yarra Glen and Lilydale has been shown to the public in initial consultation meetings at Healesville and Yarra Glen. The design presentation displayed an overview of the proposed Yarra Valley Trail Master Plan and presented preliminary concepts of the main trail zones, alignments and features. It is reported the trail would run close to Yarra Valley tourist drawcards such as Healesville Sanctuary, Yering Station winery and other popular locations. Consultation meetings took place on 20 and 21 March both at Healesville and Yarra Glen. In April last year, Yarra Ranges Council released a feasibility study to the public and allocated $550,000 from unallocated money in the Capital Expenditure Program towards detailed designs of the trail. A year later, these detailed plans are now being presented to the public after council engaged Cox Architecture to develop a Master Plan on the proposed Yarra Valley Trail. The Mail spoke to Tony Rowley, senior architect of the Yarra Valley Master Plan who said the main priority for the trail was safety. “The target audience who would be using the trail are families, so we want to ensure that it’s completely safe. “We want it to be safe, flat, and able to be used by a wide demographic,” he said. The ‘Yarra Valley trail’ as it’s being called would provide people living in Healesville and Yarra Glen an option to commute to Lilydale and would also give international visitors the opportunity to see the entirety of the Yarra Valley without the need for a car. “It’s all about, the Yarra Valley trail, getting people out of their cars and giving them a way to experience and explore the region in a more intimate way ... .it has all sorts of positive outcomes from health, to tourism and spending in the region,” Mr Rowley said.
Feasibility studies released in April 2016 estimated the total cost of the project at $10.6 million. It was projected that it would also bring 210,040 visitors annually, provide 222 new jobs and would generate $30 million as a result. Around 50 people attended each consultation meeting to hear and voice any suggestions or concerns they had about the trail. The feedback was mostly positive, but, popular concerns raised included security for landowners and businesses, where the trail would run adjacent or through their properties. Tarrawarra Estate is one of the many landholders with security concerns, and some of the proposed trail options put forward run next to, or through their property. Terry Christofides of Tarrawarra Estate says that they are comfortable and happy with having a trail that connects Lilydale to Healesville and Yarra Glen, but are concerned about security risks that it may pose to the property. “We’re comfortable with the principle of a walking trail and bike track that connects Lilydale to Healesville via Yarra Glen, however we will be strongly objecting to any option that places our private property at risk from a security perspective,” he says. “If it’s not coming through or adjacent, we’re happy to see the pathway progressed, for example, as highlighted in one of the trail options where it runs alongside the roadways.” These options are being explored by Cox Architecture, who will continue consulting and working with communities and parties involved to determine the most viable route for the project. All the options are still in their infancy, and a spokesperson for Yarra Ranges Council highlights that no final route has yet been approved. “No final alignment of the Yarra Valley Trail has been approved and residents should check back at yarraranges.vic.gov. au for more information as the trail project develops.”

Coronation Park in the heart of Healesville proved the perfect fit for the second Rotary Club of Healesville Dog’s Day Out. Dogs of every description filed into the leafy park on Sunday, 26 March, to compete in over 20 categories from the smallest to the biggest, the shiniest to the prettiest, the dog with the longest at each end - tail and ears, the smiliest, the most resembling their owner, the best man and dog ... all in recognition of what great companions the fourlegged canines are. Many of the dogs were rescue dogs, reinforcing the Aussie trait of weighing in for the underdog. Almost every dog and owner had a story to tell, and they were happy to share them with other dog-lovers on the day. Rotarian and event organiser, John Robinson, said the day was a huge success with more than 50 dogs entered in the grand parade. “The venue is just perfect for this event, with the shade and being in the centre of town,” Mr Robinson said. “It’s been a great day all round.” See more photos online at www.MailCommunity.com.au

Cruising for cancer By Derek Schlennstedt The aptly named Shitbox Rally will see 200 cars depart from Adelaide on 27 May to travel 3800kms to Cairns. Among the participants will be Healesville father and son Paul and Bradley Van De Ven, driving their $350 Ford Falcon wagon across Australia. Before they leave, the pair is inviting anyone who has been affected by cancer to come and sign the car this Saturday 1 April. Paul says the signing can be for a loved one suffering with cancer or in memory of someone who has passed away and acknowledges the huge impact that cancer has on everyone involved. “It’s incredible how widespread cancer is, unfortunately everyone has been touched by it, and it is an illness that strikes a chord with many people,” Paul said. “Come along and you can leave a short message or name on the car.” The Ford Falcon has been dedicated to the memory of Healesville local and close friend of Paul’s, Bryce Crow who passed away in 2014 from melanoma. To pay tribute to their friend, the car has a sticker of Bryce and “cruising for Crowy” along the side, and includes Shitbox Rally and Cancer Council stickers. The rally which is runs every year helps raise funds for the cancer council and over the last seven years has raised over 10 million dollars. Rules surrounding the rally state that cars involved are required to be less than $1000 and mustn’t be 4wd or Awd. The 2wd 1996 Ford Falcon will carry the father-son duo from Healesville to

In preparation for the trip, the car has undergone some well needed R&R including a new head gasket and radiator. Out of the three times that it’s been driven, twice it has been brought home
on the back of a trailer, but Paul believes that it’s now ready for the trip. Although, he jokes that the car still needs to drive to Adelaide first before starting the rally. The ‘cruizin for crowy car’ can be viewed between 10am- 1pm this Saturday 1 April at the River Street car park, Healesville.
Paul and Bradley are welcoming people to come along and leave a note on the car for a cancer sufferer or someone who has been affected by it. You can follow all the exploits of team ‘Bradandad’ on their Facebook page Bradandad -Shitbox Rally 2017, where they will provide running updates throughout their trip.
Plea to change laws on sex offenders By Kath Gannaway

A group of around 40 Healesville residents gathered in support of a plea to change the law in relation to registered sex offenders. The meeting, held at Queen’s Park on Sunday 25 March, came after news that a man convicted of sex offences in 2015 was to be released, and would be living in the vicinity of the Healesville High School. The school has taken measures to ensure students are not put in danger. In an emotional plea to the those gathered on Sunday, one of the victims of the man said she hoped her experience, and the inability of the law to stop the perpetrator from returning to a home that was close to children, would be a catalyst for change. She said the law, as it stands, did not prohibit registered sex offenders living near places where children gathered. “I had to go to the school to inform
Alison Prior addresses the gathering. 166607 Picture: KATH GANNAWAY that a man convicted as a serious sex offender would soon be released and would be living close by,” she said. Healesville parent Alison Prior who organised the event said the aim was not to be a vigilante group but to effect change to legislation. “I don’t want people placed on a register as a serious sex offender near schools or childcare centres,” she said.

Drunk asleep under vehicle They say the best thing to do when you’ve drunk too much is to ‘sleep it off’. Well it’s certainly advice that one party goer who attended the Hot Dub Wine Machine event over the weekend had taken to heart. On 25 March, the event was held at Rochford Winery and over 10,000 people attended. However, around 5pm, a New South Wales male tried to evade security guards at the event and was shortly reported missing to police. It is reported the man saw security guards, panicked and then fled. Police stated that the man appeared to be intoxicated and was seen by staff running away into the distance. A search to find the missing male was conducted at 5.15pm. Yarra Glen Sergeant Richard Coulson stated that the number of people attending the event hampered efforts to find him. “10,000 people made it extremely difficult, so we had to wait until the revellers left and then conduct a search,” Sergeant Coulson said. After seven hours with no sighting, an Air Wing helicopter was called to the site at midnight to help search the missing patron. Just after 2am in the morning, the search was called off. It was only in the early morning when staff had finished cleaning up and were leaving that the missing male was found sleeping under a staff car. Yarra Glen Sergeant Richard Coulson said the man was lucky to have not been run over. “It appears he has fallen asleep under a vehicle, and it was only when one of the staff moved the vehicle that they found him,” Sergeant Coulson said. Notwithstanding this incident, police said that patrons were well behaved and there were no other major issues. Motorcyclist hospitalised A 4WD collided with a motorbike along Maroondah Highway, Healesville, between Healesville and Coldstream, at 1.45 on 4 March. The motorcyclist sustained injuries and was taken to hospital. Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol is urging witnesses or anyone who caught the incident on their dashcam to contact them on 9247 2402.

“We need to have processes in place that don’t require the victim to go to these places and tell them that a serious sex offender is about to be released.” She called for a working group to be formed to lobby and advocate for change. Healesville High School principal Alan Rennick confirmed that CCTV cameras had been installed following advice from the Department of Education.
“We’re convinced that any threat to our students is extremely low, but have taken appropriate measures,” he said. “We sought legal advice last year when told that the man was intending to return to Healesville and that advice from the Department of Education, and from Victoria Police, was that we should ensure we have CCTV in that area, and supervision in that area. “Because it is quite a broad site, we have made a particular part of the school out of bounds to students in recess and lunch times,” he said. Mr Rennick said an assembly was held on Monday 27 March to reassure students that he was confident of their safety, and that measures had been put in place. He said letters were sent to parents and information had been put on the school website and Facebook with an invitation to any individual, student or parent to contact him if they had any concerns.

Healesville Guardian 27 March 1937 In case you didn't know Answering the council’s request for permission to keep a platypus in the sanctuary, Mr Lewis (Chief Fisheries and Game Inspector) said it was regretted that the one kept had died in the fullness of time. He knew that several attempts had been made to keep a platypus in the sanctuary and no less than five had passed through the hands of those in charge there. From this it would appear that they had not sufficient experience and knowledge to keep such an animal alive and healthy, or that conditions at the sanctuary were not favourable. This decision will strike a serious blow to the tourist trade - the lifeblood of Healesville. Cr Kay and others said at the council this should not be taken sitting down. It has to be recorded that platypus have been successfully kept in the sanctuary for long periods - not all of them have died, but escaped by unknown means. In the best interests of the district, every endeavour must be made to obtain one of these animals for public exhibition. - Kath Gannaway

Money for nothing
With the sad story of Haylee and Trent highlighted in the article, ‘Help needed for shock victim’ (‘Mail’, 14 March), it occurred to me that maybe there could be a way for Trent to get free travel to The Alfred, as long as Haylee is in hospital. His transport costs must be a severe drain on his budget. Perhaps some kind-hearted politician with a conscience, if there is such a thing, could step in, slash the red tape and make life a bit easier for this family. Surely a travel pass would not be hard to organise. From Far North Queensland, I wish Haylee a speedy recovery. George Field, Cairns.
I’ve always thought that stamp duty was iniquitous, as it is a lot of money for nothing. So I was delighted by the news from Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews, on behalf of first home buyers, whether it makes a lot of difference or not, to remove stamp duty from first home purchases. Surely, it is a move in the right direction. Australians should buy Australia while we still can. Freehold fee simple ownership of property is not universally available. We, in Australia, are blessed to be able to have a little bit of this great land to call our very own and to pass on to future generations. I understand that other states are already doing something similar for first home buyers, or will soon follow suit. Victoria, way to go! Stanley R. Burgess, Healesville.

Forum taps feminine creative talent By Kath Gannaway An International Women’s Day Lunch in Warburton on 8 March provided a rare opportunity to tap into the inspiring wisdom and experience of three of the Upper Yarra’s most creative women. Artist, Belinda Rogers, photographer Kate Baker and writer Lindy Schneider were guest speakers at the forum titled Women Working Creatively. The forum was the latest in the series of Women of Interest luncheons, and according to joint organiser, Kerry Nichols, a highlight of the series. It is the first time the event has been presented as a talk-back forum with the women taking centre stage to speak
about their experiences of what it means to be a creative woman, where they have come, where they are heading, and the challenges and rewards along the way. The topic, and articulate and passionate responses by the women, opened not just windows, but threw the doors open to explore notions of self-awareness and confidence, and lack of both, the role of pain and other emotions as a catalyst for art, isolation, stages of artistic and creative endeavour in the midst of other aspects of life such as motherhood and employment ... and so much more. More than 80 people, men and women, attended the event held at the Warburton Arts Centre.
Ms Nichols said the event was a huge success. “The quality of listening was exceptional ... pin-drop stuff,” she said of the audience’s response. “There was real engagement with the speakers by the audience and from the conversations afterwards, there were quality outcomes.” Ms Nichols said she was delighted to hear of one of the audience members who wrote to her granddaughter encouraging her to be creative despite all the things that may happen along the way. “It hit a nerve in our community; people were comfortable with the format and ready to be engaged.”
Yarra Ranges home school parents have welcomed a commitment by the State Opposition to disallow a proposal that would increase regulations around home schooling. Labelling the proposed regulations as punitive and unjustified, Shadow Minister for Education, Nick Wakeling, announced on Monday, 20 March, that the Liberal Nationals Coalition believes parents have a right to choose the appropriate educational setting for their child. “Home education must remain a legitimate choice for families,” Ferntree Gully MP Wakeling said. The Mail reported in January this year that Yarra Ranges home schooler parents were opposing proposed changes to regulations, they said, would result in less time teaching their children. Under Draft Education Regulations released by the Labor Government just before Christmas, 2016, children were compelled to stay in unsafe environments in mainstream schooling. The government defended the move saying the changes were being made as part of the Education and Training Reform Regulations, which were made in 2007 and needed to be reviewed after 10 years. Susan Wight, co-ordinator of the Home Education Network (HEN) which represents many home educators, including many in Yarra Ranges, said there were a number of
problems with the proposed regulations. Some of the proposed changes include all new home educators to submit a plan for approval, children to remain in school until approval has been given to home school and all home educators to be reviewed on a random basis. Ms Wight this week said HEN and home educators across Victoria welcomed the announcement that Liberal Nationals would move to disallow the Education Regulations if they are presented to parliament as drafted. “This announcement shows a respect for hardworking home educators that the government seems to lack,” Ms Wight said. She said the new regulations, developed ahead of the June sunset date for existing regulations, handed extended powers over home education to the Victorian Regulations and Qualifications Authority (VRQA). An Education Department spokesman told the Mail in January, however, that the aim was to improve the regulations. “Requiring a learning plan from home schooling families and giving the VRQA powers to review a family’s arrangements for home schooling are sensible steps forward,” he said. “It ensures young people get the education they deserve while still leaving home schooling families with considerable freedom,” he said.

Now is a perfect time to plan for the year ahead; the kids have gone back to school and Christmas is now a distant memory. But planning can be difficult, especially if you are unsure where to start. The Rural Financial Counselling Service Gippsland (RFCS-Vic Gippsland) provides free, confidential and independent assistance for agricultural farms and businesses at risk of financial hardship. Previously, the RFCS–Gippsland was limited to providing assistance only to the agricultural industry, but the service has recently expanded to include other small rural businesses. Beans raising autism funds By Derek Schlennstedt To raise money for Autism Spectrum Australia, Valley Xpresso in Woori Yallock is holding a ‘pay what you can afford day’ on Friday, 31 March. On the day, a donation box will be placed on the counter where people can drop as much money as they like into the box, says owner Steve Taylor. “It could be $1 or it could be $100, order a coffee and go ... it’s that simple. “We’ll be donating these coffees to help bring awareness about this fantastic cause,” he said. Woori Yallock locals Darren and Jennifer Sadler are facilitating the fund-raiser after Tamika, their seven-year-old daughter, was diagnosed with autism in 2015. The couple are also undertaking a fund-raising initiative to raise awareness for autism by walking 10,000 steps per day from 2 April until 9 April. Jennifer urges people to be more aware about autism, which is often diagnosed late due to each individual displaying different traits and characteristics. “It’s in our life every day and will be for the rest of our lives,” she says. "Every day, simple things like getting dressed to go to school, to what we’re going to have for dinner. Everything has to be visual for her, we can’t change

To raise money for autism, Valley Xpresso in Woori Yallock are holding a 'pay what you can afford day.' Left to right, front, Darren and Jennifer Stadler, and back, Tamika Stadler and Echo Taylor. 166473 plans on the spot, and she needs to know three or four days in advance ... .we need to stick to a strict routine or else she just can’t cope," says Jennifer. Children diagnosed with autism often have difficulty with social interaction and display a tendency to engage in repetitive behaviour. Steve, who is close friends with Darren and Jennifer has seen first-hand the hard work, time and money that is needed to care for children diagnosed under the spectrum and has offered help to raise money through the Valley Xpresso. The money raised will go to the Autism-spectrum Australia which provides information, intervention and a range of services to help meet the needs of people on the spectrum and their families.
Steve told the Mail that any amount of money helped and invited everyone to stop on their way to work Friday morning to help donate to a fantastic cause. “Raising awareness helps us understand just how complex these issues are, and will hopefully assist in developing new strategies to contribute in integrating these fantastic kids into society and let them lead as normal a life as possible.” “Nearly everybody knows someone, somewhere, who has been affected by autism, and we are really hoping to help a local family raise a huge amount for this very worthy cause,” he said. Valley Xpresso is located along Warburton Highway, just after Lusatia Park Road and before Lester Street.
Our homes are out of reach By Peter Douglas Lack of affordable housing within the Yarra Ranges looks set to further spiral out of control if action isn’t taken immediately, according to Yarra Ranges Council. With as much as 38 per cent shortfall presently existing in low-cost housing supply, some estimates say within 20 years as many as 50 per cent of people seeking low-cost options will be left out in the cold. This would represent a major housing crisis for the region. Yarra Ranges Council, through its affiliation with the Eastern Affordable Housing Alliance (EAHA), said social housing supply was significantly below the metropolitan average, as well as being well below its capacity of meeting future needs. In 2014, the shortfall of social housing in the Yarra Ranges was 920 dwellings. Without intervention, EAHA estimates by 2036 this shortfall will reach 1260, which equates to 57 dwellings needed annually for the next 19 years. To help put this into context, Yarra Ranges experienced a 19 per cent (349) increase in the number of very low-income households between 2006 and 2011.
Yarra Ranges Council Mayor, Noel Cliff, said council had a role to play in forming partnerships with housing providers, and to continue to advocate to state and federal governments to come up with solutions. “There needs to be more intervention to increase the supply of social and affordable housing in the Yarra Ranges,” Cr Cliff said. “This is why council is currently looking at the option to sell a block of surplus land in Lilydale to an affordable housing provider to build new social housing. “We have seen homelessness increasing throughout the state as the cost of renting increases and the population grows. “Council applauds the recent announcements by the State Government, but has concerns about uncertain federal funding for vital housing services for homeless people. “All three levels of government need to contribute to solving this urgent problem.” Cr Cliff said mixed tenancy, and affordable and well-managed housing, was a potential solution In 2016, local agency ANCHOR supported 1682 people in the Yarra Ranges through their Opening Doors Program and in
transitional support and other programs they offer to people at risk of becoming homeless, and that each case was different. “The majority of adults presenting as homeless have children in their care who are missing school, not attending sporting clubs and often without close friends or families around them,” Ms Tucker said. “For everyone that is homeless, their lives are put on hold; without a home to live in, life as we expect it to be is impossible.” Meanwhile, the EAHA has expressed concerns the Federal Government may axe funding for the National Affordable Housing Agreement (NAHA) in the upcoming Budget. Echoing the alarm expressed by other housing groups, EAHA is calling on the Federal Government to maintain its commitment to the NAHA. EAHA Chairperson Sharon Ellis said a re-think may be required. “Federal Government funding is vital for public housing and homelessness services,” she said. “If media suggestions are correct and the Federal Government intends to axe NAHA funding, countless vulnerable Australians will be at increased risk of homelessness.”
It’s a gas, gas, gas here An information session will be held at 7pm on Tuesday 28 March at the Warburton Mechanics Hall about the delivery of natural gas to Warburton. Multinet Gas representatives will update community mem-

Free tickets for young By Jodie Symonds If the sound of classical music doesn’t draw you to The Memo in Healesville, perhaps free tickets will. Orchestra Victoria will take you on a musical journey on Friday 31 March, and they’re offering free tickets for people under 26 years old. The orchestra will perform The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross in a strong quartet version of Joseph Haydn’s creation. Associate Principal Cello Diane Froomes told the ‘Mail’ the performance was fitting for the Easter season. “It’s very appropriate for this time of year,” she said. “You can genuinely call it a masterpiece.” Since performing with the orchestra since 1989, Ms Froomes said free tickets for people under 26 were a good incentive for those who wanted to listen to music, but might not necessarily have the money to do so. “You don’t want price to be a barrier - especially for young people,” she said. “I can see how life is hard for them and even $26 is a significant amount for someone with not a lot of money. “There’s always that perception that only older generations listen to classical music, but I don’t think that’s the case.” Orchestra Victoria will perform an intimate chamber concert in a musical journey through time. Ms Froomes said the performance
Those under 26 years old can see the outstanding Orchestra Victoria for free at The Memo. 166523 would be slow, including nine short sonatas. “They’re all slow - in most sonatas there are contrasting speeds,” she said. “The final movement is called Earthquake - so you’ll have four people trying
to recreate an earthquake - which will be interesting.” She said she had never performed at The Memo, but was excited to add it to her repertoire. Orchestra Victoria will also perform
on Friday 8 August, Friday 20 October and Friday 8 December at 7.30pm. Audience members are encouraged to stay back after the performance to meet the musicians. To book, visit culturetracks.info
Weekend of heritage By Kath Gannaway The heritage and history of the Upper Yarra region goes on show on the weekend of 1 and 2 April, with the annual CrankUp at the Upper Yarra Museum at Yarra Junction. The museum precinct, surrounding the old railway station, will showcase vintage steam and stationary engines, vintage commercial vehicles, chainsaw carving, haybaling and blacksmithing, along with a great range of demonstrations and displays by community and other local groups. The two-day event is a wonderful opportunity also to explore the buildings that have come from all around the region and the excellent collections of photographs and other artefacts held by the Upper Yarra Valley Historical Society. Children will have a rare opportunity to name one of the museum’s most recent attractions, a larger-than-life, carved owl which sits watching over the traditional-style playground. Crank-Up runs from 10am to 4pm at the Museum, Warburton Highway, Yarra Junction. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/UpperYarraMuseum or phone 5967 2167.
Beer and cider is back for a little taste The Yarra Valley Beer and Cider Festival is back on Saturday, 1 April, providing an opportunity to enjoy some of the best beer and cider produced in the Yarra Valley and beyond. The festival will run from 11am to 5.30pm at the Lilydale Showgrounds. Following the success of last year’s inaugural festival, the Rotary Club of Wandin will again showcase exceptional beers and ciders as the number of brewers, both in the Valley and further afield, grows to meet a growing appreciation and demand for fine boutique varieties. The club has worked with passionate community beer and cider lovers to bring the festival to the valley and the response last year
showed it hit the mark. While the Yarra Valley is known for wine and fruit, there is also a lot of beer and cider being brewed and the Wandin Rotarians saw an opportunity to tap into that growing passion to promote and celebrate the brews and create a successful fundraiser to support Rotary projects. Along with a great variety of brewers and quality food vans, there will be plenty of entertainment throughout the day. As with last year’s event, the focus will be on a quality experience with a strong emphasis on responsible drinking as part of a great social day out. For more information, visit info@yarravalleybeerandciderfestival.com.au

A Cure For Wellness (MA15+) Starring: Dane DeHaan, Jason Isaacs, Mia Goth
Hidden Figures (PG)
Jackie (MA15+)
Who ... me? The museum's owl is looking for a name. 166506 Pictures: KATH GANNAWAY
A Cure For Wellness is an absurd yet excellent psychological horror film. Sent to retrieve his boss for a merger, New York financial executive Lockhart (Dane DeHaan) travels to a mysterious wellness spa in the Swiss Alps, but discovers a sinister secret under its nurturing surface. Compared to the family-friendly bulk of his work, which includes the first three Pirates of the Caribbean films, A Cure For Wellness feels like a macabre pet project for director Gore Verbinski. This film is driven by sumptuous visuals, engrossing performances and a nightmarish, slow-burning atmosphere. Lockhart begins the film as an aloof loner,
but his fatigued, overworked persona renders him strangely sympathetic, and the monstrous treatment he endures overrides our initial dislike of him. Jason Isaacs is phenomenal as Dr Voller, a genial and welcoming yet strangely evasive man capable of shocking cruelty. A Cure For Wellness has shades of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, with a troubled protagonist in a snowy fortress-like location whose morbid experiences test his sanity. The climax is somewhat ridiculous, delivering one bizarre twist after another, but it still feels tense and deserved, given the film’s steady build of madness. I’m rather disappointed to see A Cure For Wellness performing so poorly at the box-office, as it’s an incredibly eerie, grotesque and compelling film.

MODERN INDUSTRIAL DESIGN THIS stunning property has been designed by a well-known local architect, alongside the famous re-claimed timber specialist Hamish Knox. Inspiration for the home came from the large timber trusses recycled from an old Melbourne warehouse, along with natural timbers, steel and polished concrete floors throughout. The sense of space is evident on entering the foyer and walking through to the impressive open-plan living area, with a modern kitchen with a metallic glass splashback and the family dining area which showcases the stunning recycled trusses, along with the beautiful tree top views.
PROPERTY OF THE WEEK
The private master suite has an ensuite and walk-in wardrobe, there is a central family bathroom for generous size bedrooms, with spacious lofts above each one, and an upstairs office overlooking the main family area. Custom built doors lead out to the private entertaining area that overlooks about an acre of natural grounds that showcases an abundance of native birdlife. Even though this wonderful home is located within an easy walk of the bustling Healesville township, you feel as though you are miles from anywhere.

KNOW YOUR LOCAL REAL ESTATE AGENT
A message from the Managing Director Bill Verhagen. Back in 2007 after being in real estate for about 13 years, we decided as a family to start our own real estate company. Now, almost 10 years later we look back, and reflect on the amazing journey that it’s been. With humble beginnings operating from home in the first year, Integrity has grown to become a 2 office network in Yarra Glen and Kinglake. William my eldest son is Branch Manager of our Kinglake office. He has become one of the area’s most respected and trusted agents. As for myself running the Yarra Glen office, I combine 21 years of real estate experience, with 25 years previously in the building industry. Integrity isn’t just a name. It’s how we run our business. It’s how we achieve amazing results for our clients. It’s central to our motto. Excellence in Service. Without Compromise.
We are very proud to announce that Professionals Yarra Valley won the following awards in the RateMyAgent 2017 Agent of the Year Awards The awards, which are the largest real estate awards in Australia, recognise those agents and agencies that have ranked the highest based on customer reviews and feedback.
ASHLEIGH HALL WON AGENT OF THE YEAR FOR LAUNCHING PLACE & WARBURTON THE TEAM AT PROFESSIONALS YARRA VALLEY WON AGENCY OF THE YEAR FOR LAUNCHING PLACE, YARRA JUNCTION, MILLGROVE & WARBURTON Ashleigh Hall said “I’m excited to be named the top agent and proud that the award recognises the hard work of my team and the dedication we have to the local property market.” The RateMyAgent Agent of the Year Awards compare over 26,000 agents and agencies across the country. They highlight the leading real estate agents and agencies in each suburb, city and state across Australia, and on a national level. A big thank you to all our wonderful clients who helped us achieve these awards.

Sandy Hall Real Estate is a very community minded Real Estate
At Mark Gunther First National Real Estate, we always aim to pride the best possible service and a consistent range of high quality Residential, Rural and Lifestyle Properties, Marketing, Sales & Rentals to our clients at all times. Mark Gunther – Director / Licensed Estate Agent Determined, enthusiastic and dedicated to local real estate for the last 35 years of which 28 of those years have been spent working in the Yarra Valley. Mark has achieved high respect from the community and his peers. His focus on Healesville, Yarra Glen and surrounding areas has contributed to many successful sales and many happy clients that keep coming back. Gary Lucas – Sales Consultant After moving to Healesville as a child in 1974, Gary can definitely be considered a local. Having grown up and spent his working career in the area, he doesn’t just know the area - He loves it! His real estate vision is quite simple, he wants to be able to help people achieve buying and selling property, and at the same time, always provide excellent service and support to his clients. When quality of service counts, and for a friendly and compassionate attitude and hard work, you can rely on Gary to deliver results. Kate Taylor - Sales Consultant Real Estate is Kate’s passion. Kate has been in the Yarra Valley for more than 30 years. She loves talking to people and loves houses. Having worked in the industry on and off since she was 17 starting as a receptionist for a big city agency and then moving onto a smaller boutique agency closer to home. Kate started her Sales career almost 12 years ago, had a couple of years running her own successful Agency and am now happily working for Mark Gunther First National.
agency and Sandy has been involved in Real estate for almost 20 years. She is local resident an ‘independent’ agent with a strong level of commitment to honesty and ethics not normally associated with the Real Estate industry. Sandy says “Many of the sales I make are from people I sold to many years ago, I find when people are happy with me they recommend me to their friends who may not have had such a good real estate experience in the past. When someone buys from me I make sure they have all the information they could possibly need about the area they are moving too, I show then where the Kinder is, the local primary school etc, we give them a Warby Hwy directory so they can access local tradies if needed.” Sandy’s enthusiasm and personal commitment to both the Vendors and Buyers is a testament to the fact that she has bought and sold many times and can empathise with both buyers and sellers going through the same gamete of emotions that leaving your home, and buying another home brings. Sandy has attended many conferences and courses over the years and has received a gold medal industry award as recognition of her ability and has countless testimonials from happy Vendors and buyers. Sandy says ‘Now is a great time to sell having buyers and investors just waiting to purchase in most areas of the valley’. Centrally located at 2874 Warburton Hwy Wesburn, pop in or phone 5967 2001 or 0402 260 364 to discuss all aspects of Real Estate.

roaches, rodents, wasps and bees. Meanwhile, most homeowners are aware of the health and safety risks associated with cockroach infestations, including the allergies and asthma triggered by cockroach allergens, and the germs and bacteria they have been known to spread. What may not be as widely known is the fact that cockroaches are a very interesting and resilient pest, which exhibit some very odd behaviour and survival tactics. For example, cockroaches spend 75 per cent of their time resting and can withstand temperatures as cold as 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Let Frontline Termite & Pest Control solve all your cockroach problems today. The business also performs pre-purchase and pre-construction inspections. For your convenience, they are available on weekends. They offer fast, efficient and courteous service. For more information, contact 5964 3888.

Termites are widely regarded as one of the most damaging pests to have in your home or business. And for good reason. They are among the most destructive insect pests in the world. They are known to destroy the wall and roofing timbers of a home within three months of construction; and cause more damage to homes in Australia than fire, floods and storms combined. So if a problem arises, let the professionals know. Frontline Termite and Pest Control is a nonfranchise, family-run business. They have 15 years of experience in the industry. They specialise in termite treatment and termite control in the Yarra Valley and as far as Melbourne, in both new and established homes - commercial, domestic and extensions. The company guarantees all work related to termite services and termite treatment, and they are fully insured. Frontline Termite and Pest Control specialises in the removal of more than just termites, including: ants, spiders, cock-

Rain push to points By Dean Thompson Alexandra Speedway Club held its latest race meeting on 25 March while under threat of possible rain all day. In the end, rain did wash out the meeting after all the qualifying racing had been done, and winners were determined on points to be Brad McClure, Ricky Cornwall, Warrick Howie and Luke Fallon. Street Stocks were the main act of the night in a warm up before their Victorian title event at the same venue at Easter and the likes of Brad McClure, Lenny Bates, Scott Bull, Shaun Henry and Russell Hill, who will all compete in the title had come to get their set ups correct after recent track changes had been made. Four qualifying races for the intended final were run with McClure winning two of the three heats he competed in and Jacob Mills and Russell Hill winning the other two, the latter in a almost track record one lap speed missing out by just 0.190 of a second in setting a new record. Jacob Mills, who was on re-con for Mark Jennings who will be racing the title in April, had a second, a
Alexandra local Luke Fallon, the winner of Sports Sedans. 166596 win and a second, and that was good enough to put him on the podium and a smile on the face of the car owners. McClure was awarded the win after the rain pelted the venue and washed all hope of finals with Mills second, then Bates, Bull and Hill rounding out the top five. In the Junior Sedans, it seems a
recent head shave as a result of racing over $2000 for the Shave for a Cure charity has done Ricky Cornwall wonders. His new streamline haircut helped him pave a way through the field in heats to two seconds and a first and a top of the points result over Kasey Garlick, Jeremy Gorski, Courtney
Meakins and Luke Dingley. Luke Fallon in the Sports Sedans booked in a win and two seconds on his way to securing the top qualifier and points win over Steve Kershaw. Andrew Jordan, Jack Van Bremen and Dale Smith rounded out the top five in a very competitive field that unfortunately had seen one of the new stars of the class Shane Kruger, end up with a wrecked car. In Standard Saloon racing, a late nomination from the new Victorian Champion Warrick Howie made things tough for the others as he picked up three heat wins qualifying for the pole position. The Standards were the only class able to complete their final before the rain, and Howie who elected to start at the rear of the field rounded up those ahead of him on his way to a win over Allan Poole, Sara Benson and her father Victor with Leigh Mitchell rounding out the top five. Racing returns at Easter with the Victorian Street Stock title event attracting 50 cars to compete over two nights of racing.

Grand final victory for Lilydale side LILYDALE BOWLS Saturday 25 March was to be the final showdown of the Division 1 finals series. Lilydale were victorious against Deer Park 83 shots to 66 with Lilydale not having to complete the last end as their lead was too great a gap for Deer Park to overcome. The final was held at Doncaster Bowls Club on a grass rink. Lilydale was well-supported by a large contingent of its members, all wearing their club shirts as a sign of solidarity. People may consider lawn bowls as a very sedate sport. However, the barracking throughout the match by both team’s supporters, mirrored anything that you would expect at the footy (without the profanities). At half time, Lilydale had a handy lead of 12, with two rinks down and two rinks up. There was no time for complacency as any quality team can soon bridge the gap with a few ends. Last week, Deer Park and Lilydale both qualified to play in the
Victorian Bowls Premier League for the 2017-18 season. Hence, it was both teams’ first encounter at playing a Premier League side. After the half-time break, the weather threatened with a few spots of rain. Fortunately, that’s all that was to fall, as any rain would have had an effect on the running of the green. Gradually, the lead increased, and spectators kept up their constant support until the result was a foregone conclusion. Once more, the game was played in a fine spirit by both teams. At the conclusion of the game, the Lilydale team was congratulated in a moving speech. Congratulations also go to the Lilydale Board of Management, which had a vision two years ago and appointed a coach. This year, they added and assistant coach, Josh Sanders, to aid Troy Stafford. Finishing the season third on the ladder was a carefully crafted strategy. For more details, check out www.lilydalebowls.com.au.
WARBURTON BOWLS For such a small club, the Warburton Bowls Club certainly punches above its weight! In a thrilling finish, Warburton 1 held off Darebin City 1 to win by two shots - 77 to 75 - at Doncaster on Saturday to win the White Flag as the best Victorian Bowls Association Metropolitan Division 2 side. Congratulations to all the players for a wonderful team performance! It was also pleasing to win alongside their Eastern colleagues, Lilydale 1, who won Division 1. Rink scores were as follows: B. Woods 18/17; P. Woods 18/19; G. Broussard 17/29 and J. Van Der Zweep 24/10. A fantastic effort from Jason Van Der Zweep in his first season as a skipper and to all his team! Special thanks to all the club members and supporters, who were right behind the team throughout their finals campaign. The club has been rewarded for all its hard work since joining the larger metropolitan competition. Everyone involved should feel extremely proud.
They now look forward to a welldeserved break before preparing for the challenge of Division 1 next season. New players are needed and welcome to join the club, so it can continue to grow and ensure it can field all three Saturday Pennant Teams next season. For further details, please contact President Rodney McKail on 0437 373 752 or Chairman of Selectors Peter Woods on 0409 009 199. Congratulations to Gary Broussard and Adrian Holmes who won the Club Pairs’ Championship by two shots - 18 to 16 - defeating Rodney McKail and Chris Neale in an exciting final. With 16 of the 18 ends completed, the score was tied at 16 all, before Gary and Adrian finished with a run. A reminder to all members the club presentation night will be held at the club on Friday 21 April. Thank you to the Mail News Group for its continued support of the club and local community sport by including our reports each week in the newspaper. Go Burras!
The Division 2 team enjoys the sweet taste of victory. 166533
McMath wins on countback WARBURTON GOLF WEDNESDAY Stableford: The best score on the day went to the ever-consistent Andrew McMath with a wellcompiled 37 points. Andrew won on a countback, from Adam Patrick. Balls went to 34. The NTPs were won by Tim Jones 1st, CHB 9th and Geoff Hall 15th. Twilight: The last round of the season before the Big Shootout saw a good win to Junior Patrick (Sam), scoring 20 points. Big brother, Adam, was runner-up on 18 points. Balls went down to 17 only. NTP winners were Steuart Hawke 1st, Adam Patrick 3rd and John Hall 9th. In an interesting aside, the final 10 to fight out the 2017 shootout has now been set. The top three qualifiers are Lynda and Malcolm Dickson and Ossie McClay. These three great mates play together every week, usually first off in the early afternoon. Clearly, they enjoy each other’s company! SATURDAY Par: The winner was young tyro, Angus Smith, with a solid +4. Angus is improving all the time, as his shrinking handicap testifies! The daily runner-up was John Hall with +2. The ball rundown extended to +1 only. The NTPs went to Kevin Conway 3rd, Dale Haggar 5th, Craig Staggard 9th, Neil Leckenby 12th and Tex Van Der Kooi 15th.
Trophy goes to Mocha and Lime HEALESVILLE BOWLS The Healesville Bowling Club was really jumping last Wednesday night at the conclusion of the six weeks of the Corporate Challenge Competition. The club was blessed with good weather throughout the six weeks. The 26 local businesses, with three members in each team, were still keen to play on the final night, even if they weren’t participating in the finals. The finals were a very exciting event, with a new format to determine the premiers and best side. The final four in finishing order after five weeks were: Davison Builder's, Mocha and Lime, McDonald’s Maintenance and Barz Up. The four sides played off against each other in a finals format, with the winners playing winners and losers playing the losers. The two winning finalists were Davison Builder’s and Mocha and Lime, with Mocha and Lime winning a very exciting final in a game worthy of Saturday Pennant standard, not bad for so-called amateurs just having fun. Afterwards, there was standing room only when all playing members, supporters, families and kids packed into the clubroom for the presentation of trophies and prizes, with nibbles and refreshments aplenty. Heather and her team from Mocha and Lime were very excited to get the perpetual trophy for being Premiers for 2017. In her acceptance speech, Heather said, “they all played well because they drank the coffee from their place", a free plug if you have ever heard one. The raffle was huge, with the businesses that played kind enough to donate prizes for the raffle. The night was a huge success - with those teams which played all eager to saddle up again in the next Corporate Challenge.

Perfect score for Mick Ward By John Wood A large roll-up at the Woods Point Gun Club for the recent Jack Scott and the Don and Ann Woods Memorial shoot made it a very busy day. A large number of Scott and Woods family members were present to recognise the role that these founding members played in the club’s success. In the opening event, four shooters shared the cash divide. Trevor Newman in AA Grade, 30/30, Daryl Ewert in A Grade, 30/30, Chuck Lay in B Grade 27/30 with John Winters successful in C Grade, 29/30. The 13th Jack Scott’s Memorial event was 25 targets Double Barrel that resulted in three shooters with perfect 25/25 scores, Rob Bevis, Mick Ward and Chuck Lay. After a short shoot-off, Ward was the proud trophy holder, 29/29, taking the AA Grade prize as well. Bevis was second in AA, 28/29. Ewert was successful in A Grade, 24/25, Laurie Poile second, 23/25. Lay won B Grade outright, 25/25 from David Frazer 23/26 after a very short off with Geoff Hill and Richard Brown. A great 23/25 saw Peter Lang win C Grade from Junior shooter Jack Cross 22/25. The inaugural Don and Ann Woods Memorial event, 25 targets shot from handicap marks, was fiercely contended but resulted in only two battling for the trophy. Laurie Poile and Chuck Lay both returned 25/25 scores and after a short shoot off, Lay was excited to take the trophy, 27/27, Poile in second place 26/27.
Pictured from left: Tom Apps (Sponsor), Chuck Lay, Mick Ward, Jamie Scott, Lisa Scott, Carol Tonkin (Scott) and Frances Scott. 165476 Peter Lang won third place 28/29 from Daryl Ewert fourth, 27/29. Junior, Eddy Poole, shot a great 19/25 and is showing promise with Steve Bedggood in close contention, 23/25. The day finished with the 20 target Jack Scott Memorial Tower. Bevis and Ward again came up
trumps with 20/20 each, and after a shoot off Ward won the championship sash, 30/31, Bevis second, 39/31. Mark Gracie, Daryl Ewert and Trevor Newman qualified for the minor placing with 19/20 each with Gracie taking third, 35/36 from Newman fourth, 34/36. Ward capped off a fine day by win-
ning the High Gun sash, 68/70 from Ewert 67/70. The clubhouse was abuzz with talk, laughter and reminiscences with the day a resounding success for the shooters and the visitors. Thank you to the Scott and Woods families for sponsoring the two memorial events and to Tom and Cheryl

It was the end of an era for the Mountain District Car and Bike Show on Sunday, 19 March, with founders Jackie and Greg Sheppard bowing out after 11 years at the wheel. Pegasus Rod and Custom Club has taken on organisation and ownership of the event ensuring its future after health challenges forced Jackie to step back. The show started in Monbulk and moved to Healesville in 200x becoming a popular event with the local community and bringing car and bike enthusiasts from around Victoria to Healesville. A major driver behind the event was the opportunity to raise funds for local charities and in the decade leading up to this year’s show, around $98,000 had been poured back into various causes throughout Yarra Ranges, the majority of it in Healesville. The aim this year was to reach the $100,000, as a significant signoff milestone, and in officially thanking Jackie for the vision, commitment and hard work that has made the show such a success, Pegasus president Dietmar Munnecke, announced that a donation from this year’s show would achieve that goal ... and a little more. In a tearful farewell, Jackie thanked all the sponsors, volunteers and entrants involved in the show saying she would treasure the relationships built up over the past 10 years. She also thanked Pegasus for taking over the show and wished them success in the future. Healesville Bendigo Community Bank manager, Mark Trafford, presented a certificate in recognition of the contribution the car show has made to the Healesville community. The bank has been one of many sponsors of the event since it moved to Healesville over six years ago. Mr Trafford said the bank had enjoyed a great partnership with the car show, and in particular with Jackie, and had great admiration for the personal resilience and determination she had showed, most notably in view of recent health challenges. Mr Munnecke said their first show had also been challenging with the extreme heat impacting on numbers, but that they were looking forward to a great future for the event. “Effectively, we had eight weeks to put it together. “We have been helping Jackie out with volunteers for the show for eight of her 10 years, and in that time had rain, heat and all sorts of weather to deal with, so we will be working on this now throughout the year to make it a bigger and better event next year. Mr Munnecke thanked all the 2017 sponsors and volunteers and the car and bike enthusiasts who made the show such a spectacle. Meanwhile, the name of the show will change next year to reflect Pegasus Rod and Custom Club’s new venture.
