Quarry claim ‘dodgy’ Aboriginal body seeks listing, ‘threatens 50 jobs’ By Luke Voogt An Aboriginal heritage listing that could close an Anakie quarry has sparked calls for a parliamentary investigation into Victoria’s peak indigenous body.

The heritage listing threatened more than 50 jobs, Western Victoria MP Simon Ramsay told parliament last week. Quarry owner and former Geelong mayor Ken Jarvis welcomed Mr Ramsay’s call for an investigation.

“We’ve been fighting this listing now for almost three years,” Mr Jarvis told the Indy. “It’s been the worst three years of my life. “We’ll fight this until the very end. It’s absolutely ridiculous.”

Mr Jarvis’s company, Aerolite, planned to build a new quarry at the Anakie site in August 2014 but received an objection based on a claim of Aboriginal significance. Continued page 3

YES, PRIME MINISTER: Malcolm Turnbull speaks with G21 chair Bill Mithen in Canberra.

Canberra mission leaves PM ‘clear’ on project list Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has a “clear and thorough understanding” of Geelong’s priority projects after meeting a delegation in Canberra, according to its leader. Regional councils alliance body G21 said the delegation also met opposition Leader Bill Shorten and ministers during two days of briefings last week. The group presented a united voice for the region, said G21 chief Elaine Carbines. “Having the ability to brief our national leaders first-hand on behalf of the region is immensely important and valuable,” Ms Carbines said. “We were not expecting to be returning with pledges but sought to advocate strongly and inform on

what matters most to us.” The talks with Mr Turnbull focused Great Ocean Road investment, planning for Geelong’s convention centre and Avalon Airport, Ms Carbines said. “If our parliamentarians are to make the best decisions for our region and its future we need them to have as clear and thorough understanding of our agreed priorities, skills and challenges as possible.” Last Friday G21, Deakin University and City Hall launched a $2 billion Geelong Economic Futures blueprint, laying out projects they wanted to attract private investment for, including: · a $1 billion Avalon Freight Precinct, to become Victoria’s largest,

lowest cost seaport, road and rail terminal; · a “high-security water solution” worth as much as $800 million to drive high-value, drought-proofed regional food production, mostly for overseas markets; · a $300 million investment at CSIRO’s Animal Health Laboratory at Geelong to create an Asia-Pacific collaborative hub for infectious disease research and biosecurity; and · an injection of $70 million for Deakin’s Carbon Nexus research centre to become the world’s leading non-aerospace industrial-scale carbon-fibre manufacturing plant, employing 80 people. Earlier this year former mayor

perts acting for the secretary to the department described the grounds for listing as weak, he said. One of the experts, University of Queensland’s Doctor Andrew Sneddon, said the purported landmarks on the site failed to reach the criteria for listing, Mr Ramsay said. “Local elder Trevor Edwards of Geelong has even reportedly signed a statutory declaration that he had not heard of any such story pertaining to the site until three years ago,” he said. While VCAT approved the new quarry in 2014, the listing could affect the operation of the two existing

quarries at the site. In January VCAT granted a Cultural Heritage Permit, allowing Aerolite Quarries to quarry the site. But Mr Jarvis said it covered only a certain quantity of material. “We will run out of materials that we need to remove on that permit and that will be the time that people lose their jobs but we won’t let that happen.” On 6 March Aboriginal Victoria notified Aerolite that it wanted the site to remain on the register. The company has until 28 April to respond. “I’m determined to have this list-

ing lifted,” Mr Jarvis said. “The way they’ve dealt with the matter is unconscionable.” Mr Jarvis said the quarry never attracted “the slightest claim of any Aboriginal interest” in the 80 years before he bought it in 1986. He welcomed an independent review of the site’s heritage status despite experts already describing the heritage claim as weak. “But why should the Victorian taxpayer have to pay for another independent report?” The Indy was unable to obtain comment from Ms Hutchins before deadline.

Former Deakin University chancellor David Morgan has won a Barry Jones Medal for promoting research and innovation in the Geelong region, according to the organisation behind the annual award. Smart Geelong Network said Mr Morgan was a “unanimous choice” for his work fostering research growth at Deakin from 1999 to 2015.

The owners of south-side properties between Beltana St and Surf Coast Hwy would reap “better and safer walking conditions” for their share of the $227,000 investment, the City said. Double Take Local drinkers might have spat their mouthfuls when Little Creatures Brewery announced this week it would “can” Geelong’sown beer. After all, Furphy Refreshing Ale was only launched in 2014 and seemed to have built a reasonable following. Surely it deserved a few more rounds, especially considering the brand’s historic links to Geelong. Well, luckily the canning reference was literal, with Little Creatures actually meaning it would begin supplying the “much-loved” ale in containers of aluminium as well as glass. Phew! Now the froth has settled we’ll certainly drink to that. Another announcement raising eyebrows this week related to “killer kelp” off Queenscliff. Apparently, courageous divers risked life and snorkel to remove 200kg of e the culprit around Pope’s Eye, a popular diving site. However, Parks Victoria eventually clarified that the mission was less dangerous than perhaps suggested. In reality, the department admitted, the invasive foreign kelp was deadly only to local kelps, which it crowded out while taking over underwater environments. Just as well - local divers already have enough to contend with in sharks and rough waters without the threat of molestation by monstrous plants.

Double Take’s chief correspondent has returned from a Taiwanese sojourn with interesting observations for ongoing efforts to maintain the Great Ocean Road with some semblance of adequacy. Primarily, what the hell’s so wrong with our governments that they can’t even keep Australia’s most-iconic tourism route up to scratch? Taiwan’s equivalent, the sparsely-populated

Highway 11, snakes down the country’s east coast in a glorious example of first-class infrastructure provision and maintenance. Wider, smoother and with better-tended roadsides all the way, it makes our ocean road look like a goat track. And that’s without all the additional amenities, including numerous tunnels bored through mountainsides. Taiwanese road crews also know how to get things done fast, reopening the highway often within hours of any landslide. Compare that to last year’s Great Ocean Road chaos, which closed some sections for weeks. Taiwan’s pollies are notorious for punch-ups in parliament - if only ours had similar passion for roadworks! Meanwhile, another example of local infrastructure idiocy emerged this week with calls for a new Barwon Heads bridge. That’s right, barely six years since State Government launched its convoluted $40 million existing-bridge redevelopment, it’s already inadequate. Readers might remember the tortured consultation process, which initially swung back and forth between rebuilding the existing bridge and constructing a new, larger crossing at Geelong Rd. The politically-expedient decision eventually settled on separate bridges for motorists and pedestrians at the existing Barwon HeadsOcean Grove Rd site, which was then already bordering on summer gridlock. Now Upper House MP Simon Ramsay is leading calls for another bridge after the inevitable traffic bottleneck began peaking “every weekend”. Mr Ramsay wants “serious discussion” on the options - history suggests he might need to visit Taiwan to have one!

Chinese loading up Avalon hopes By Luke Voogt “Flights full of Chinese tourists” have prompted Avalon Airport to focus on securing more connecting flights from Sydney, according to the airport’s chief. The airport was targeting the “low-hanging fruit” of Chinese tourists flying domestically after efforts to attract direct international flights stalled over the past 12 months, Avalon Airport chief executive Justin Giddings told the Indy. “We’ve had great success in freight and Chinese visitation via Sydney. The Great Ocean Road has been a big kicker.” Tourism expert Brett Ince said Chinese tourists were choosing Avalon over Tullamarine for cheaper flights, easier car hire and to avoid metropolitan traffic. Mr Ince, deputy executive director of Tourism Geelong and The Bellarine, said more Chinese tourists were visiting the Great Ocean Road and Sovereign Hill through Avalon Airport. The tourism board was working to attract Chinese tourists on flights from Sydney, Adelaide and the Gold Coast using “existing flight structure”, Mr Ince said. Northern Bellarine Peninsula seafood was an “emerging market“ for Chinese tourism, with increasing numbers of visitors sampling local mussels and abalone, he said. “Seafood is a big thing for their culture.” Latest Victorian Government statisitics show average 17 per cent increases in Chinese daytourist numbers each year over the past decade. Mr Ince said the expansion of Deakin University offered further opportunities for Avalon. The airport was a gateway for families visiting students at the university or one of Geelong’s 13 internationally registered high schools, he said. In October 2015, The Indy reported the airport was pushing to introduce international

TOURISM: Brett Ince, deputy executive director of Tourism Geelong and The Bellarine. flights, with a New Zealand airline emerging as the strongest contender. But efforts have stalled despite Federal Government reclassifying Avalon Airport as a ’regional gateway’ rather than a ’major international gateway’, which had been a red-tape obstacle to achieving overseas flights. “Nothing has really happened in terms of that in the last year,” Mr Giddings said. The reclassification allows the Commonwealth to offer incentives to international airlines through its Regional Air Access Package. Mr Giddings said China, Hong Kong, India, Philippines and a number of Pacific countries had recognised the airport’s new status. “That’s all happened with all the ones I care about. Avalon Airport has a lot of opportunity to grow.”

Matilda the wombat is just one of the cute critters at Jirrahlinga who need volunteers to give the Barwon Heads sanctuary some much-needed TLC. “We’ve always got our head above water,” said the sanctuary’s Kristi Smith. “But because we’ve been here so long our buildings, cages and fences are starting to fall apart.” Kristi renewed the call for help as 19 workplace volunteers tidied the sanctuary’s kangaroo and koala areas on Thursday. “They’ve been awesome - it makes a big difference for us,” Kristi said, “especially with school holidays coming up - we want the place to look nice.” With miniscule government funding, the sanctuary relies heavily on its core of dedicated volunteers and entry fees over the holiday period. But Kristi said the sanctuary needed more people willing to treat volunteering as “a second job.” “One of the things people don’t realise until they get out here is it’s a lot of hard work. “We need people that can garden, paint, build and help fix things - not just hug the animals. Even if they can give us half a day, we can always work around their hours.” However, she added that hugs with the resident animals would be one of the rewards on offer for hardworking volunteers. She was hard-pressed to name her favourite animal at the sanctuary but said Matilda was “hard to walk past”. “She’s adorable but they all have their funny little personalities.” The Karingal BacLinks Foundation organised staff members from Geelong businesses for the working bee on Thursday. Foundation manager Joanne Forssman said Jirrahlinga received more than 5000 calls a year to help sick, injured and orphaned animals. “The work of volunteers is vital to Jirrahlinga, which relies on public donations and fundraising activities,” Joanne said. The day was the first of six Karingal BacLinks Foundation volunteering activities for 2017.

Anger at free city parking failure By Luke Voogt City Hall’s refusal to introduce free weekday parking in central Geelong has enraged former mayor Darryn Lyons and traders. “It beggars the belief what’s being done by these (administrators) under the control of the State Government,” Mr Lyons said. “This is the problem when you have no businesspeople on council.” Geelong’s three council administrators ruled out any move to free weekday parking this week, citing an independent study finding that the costs would outweigh the “potential benefits”. The previous council initiated the free-parking investigation shortly before the Andrews Gov-

ernment sacked all 13 councillors, including Mr Lyons, last April, Mr Lyons said the free weekend parking he introduced to central Geelong as mayor had “proven an incredible success for employers in the city”. “The businesses are the lifeblood of this city. Most regional Victorian cities today have free parking and their CBDs are booming.” Central Geelong businessman Bill Votsaris said City of Monash had revitalised trading conditions with free parking near Oakley Station. “The activity and growth in that shopping strip has been amazing.” Mr Votsaris described parking fees, which generated $14 million annually for the City, as “the single biggest inhibitor” of business in central Geelong.

“You can’t take $14m out of the economy and pretend it’s good for business.” Mr Votsaris questioned a report to the administrators that denied free-parking would generate more activity in the city. He vowed to hire his own consultants to investigate central Geelong parking. City property owner Greg McDonald described the report as “b......t”. “Give us three months of free parking and let’s ask businesses what they think,” he said. “Keep the all-day parks with the meters but get them off the bloody streets.” Mr McDonald said the City wanted to keep the meters only for “revenue to prop other areas of council”. “You’re doing that at the expense of small busi-

nesses and mum-and-dad operators.” Administrators chair Kathy Alexander said free city weekday parking would cost each ratepayer an average $134. The existing model of parking improved the turnover to make central Geelong “more accessible for a greater number of motorists“, Dr Alexander said. Free parking would encourage more use of cars, “counter to community expectations” emerging in consultations on a long-term plan for greater Geelong , she said. “Community views arising from Our Future engagements indicate significant support for improving central city access by cycling, walking and public transport rather than encouraging car use.”

City beach ‘best’ for quality water

Park trees going ‘down the drain’

Eastern Beach has finished in a tie for last summer’s best water quality, according to the Environment Protection Authority (EPA). Drysdale’s The Dell, Portarlington and St Leonards were also equal first, giving the region a clean sweep of the EPA’s “best beaches” along Port Philip and Corio bays. Frankston finished last on the 36-beach list, with Werribee ranked 35th. The Geelong and Bellarine Peninsula beaches topped the list despite rain around the end of the year threatening deterioration in water quality. “While it was quite a dry summer, Victoria experienced prolonged downpours around the Christmas / new year period that contributed to extended periods of poor water quality at all of the 36 beaches,” EPA applied sciences group manager Anthonyr Boxshall said. “Unfortunately for beachgoers, most of this rain fell just before or during weekends and usually just before warmer weather, which is when Port Phillip Bay beaches are at their busiest.”

Trees face the chop to make way for a $1.85 million stormwater filter in central Geelong’s Johnstone Park, City Hall has announced. “Johnstone Park Raingarden would comprise a series of terraced ponds to prevent pollutants from reaching Corio Bay, council administrators chair Kathy Alexander said. “Whilst I understand that some people are concerned about altering Johnstone Park, I believe the rain garden addresses contemporary water conservation requirements, adding to the heritage character of the park,” she said. “This stormwater filtration will remove up to 25 kilograms of nitrogen each year that would otherwise flow into the bay.” Dr Alexander said filtered stormwater would be stored in a submerged 250,000-litre tank for watering the park. Raingarden would “enhance Johnstone Park while maintaining (its) heritage value”, she said. The trees would be replaced within two years. Work on the project is due to begin next month.

ADVERTISING IN THE INDY REALLY WORKS

Geelong Disabled Peoples Industries (GDPI) celebrated 50 years of helping locals find work last Friday. The group now employs more than 80 disabled people, plus administrative and supervisory staff, said chairman Michael Duff. “Today we are at the fore as far as recycling goes,” he said. “The City of Greater Geelong Council has put great faith in us and we have run the resource and recycling centre in Douro Street, North Geelong, for the last 20 years.” Mr Duff addressed about 150 past and present board members, staff, suppliers, contractors and others at the Novotel Friday night. Geelong West Rotary Club members Alf de Forest, then manager of Grace McKellar House, and Murray Mitchell, led efforts to help disabled people find work in the '60s. GDPI’s first committee, comprised largely of Rotarians, opened the doors at Geelong West in 1967, employing six disabled people, Mr Duff said.

The first employees repaired wooden soft drink crates and within a short time Alcoa, Ford and Donaghy’s rope works provided additional work, he said. “With today’s society all about consumables and waste" the group has moved into e-waste, scrap metal, green waste, furniture, cardboard, plastic and bric-a-brac, Mr Duff said. “The list is almost endless and our factories in Baxter Road and Slevin Street North are at capacity. “Godfrey Hirst Carpets is also giving us loads of work de-spooling wool and nylon and this employs a fair number of our people.” Three disabled people have been with the group for 40 years, while another 14 have worked there between 35 and 25 years, Mr Duff added. Today the board consists past and present Geelong West Rotary members. Mr Duff made special mention of GDPI supervisors who he said had served as teachers, mentors, bosses and friends to “our people.”

NEWS

Ambo Jack is in it for the drama By Luke Voogt Jan Juc paramedic Jack Garnett had just finished a gruelling 3am shift when realised he needed a “healthier way of expressing” himself. “Serving the Geelong community has been an absolute honour but it comes with its costs,” the 38-year-old said. An early-morning web search led to Mooregrace Studios and his current gig on Geelong web series Rostered on. “It’s very rare to get a man with a profession, a mortgage and a family coming to acting so late,” he said. “If there are any middle-aged men out there, who in their quiet moments dream about the acting world, hopefully I’m an example for them to just give it a go.” Acting is almost therapy for Jack. “Being a paramedic is all about reducing the drama and acting allows me to do the exact opposite - it lets me revel in the drama and turn it up to 10,” he said. Jack plays no-nonsense storeman Darren who “believes in the honour the job”. He has little trouble getting into character, having worked in warehouses and retail prior to becoming a paramedic in 2006. “When it comes to good solid work everyone needs to take a leaf out of my book,” Jack said. “The s**t would fall over if I wasn’t there. The poncy sales staff don’t have much to sell if I don’t do my job.” Jack described himself as one of the “lucky” ones who escaped the retail sector. “I get to look back with fond memories rather than being stuck in the grind,” he said. “There comes a point when you realise you don’t want to do it forever - you don’t exactly get a lot of respect from the community or your bosses.” Jack was excited about Rostered On’s debut episode next Tuesday 4 April.

JACK OF ALL TRADES: Jack Garnett behind the scenes on the set of Rostered On. “There’s a lot of laughter on set,” he said. “Hopefully that will come across in the final edit.” “If people are excited about what they’ve seen then they’ll be blown away by what’s to come.” “The show does a magnificent job of taking the piss out of the industry but at the same time respecting it for how it supports a lot of people’s lifestyles.”

Rostered On director Ryan Chamley said he had been inundated with messages after UK viral video juggernauts UNILAD and LAD Bible shared the show’s trailer. An Australian film body had been in contact with Ryan after the trailer received nearly 20 million views with days until the premiere. “They said they’d never seen anything like the response we’ve generated on our own,” he said.

“We haven’t had anyone pick it up yet but we’re confident we can get funding for the second season,” But Jack said he would to continue “saving lives” in the ambulance service, even if the show launched his acting career. “I’ve seen all walks of life through that great job - Geelong certainly has its fair share of characters.”

Letters G21 passionate about Avalon Richard Worland (Letters, 24 March) was right to hail Avalon Airport as a future economic bonanza but disappointed with his inference that G21-Geelong Region Alliance lacks focus on the airport’s development. Realising Avalon’s domestic, international and freight growth potential remains one of G21’s priority projects, backgrounded in detail on our website. During last week’s highly focused and purposeful G21 delegation to Canberra it was among top agenda items in discussions with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and other government chiefs. We continue to advocate stridently with and for Avalon, seeking federal and state support for the mission to attract an international carrier, expand domestic services, provide regulatory support where necessary, and continue expansion of the airport’s industrial and commercial sector. Last week G21 also joined Deakin University and City of Greater Geelong to launch a $2 billion strategic vision for the region’s future, with development of a $1 billion Avalon freight precinct prominent among four key projects. The project recognises the airport’s potential and aims to position the region as Victoria’s major road, rail, air and sea transport hub, with the creation of 3000 local jobs. Avalon is a key to our economic future and Geelong region can be assured that, with detailed insight, G21 is passionately pressing its case at the highest levels. Time to pay the Premier’s price I watched the shutdown of Hazelwood Power Station this week with great anxiety. Its closure will cut 22 per cent of Victoria’s electricity production and 1000 jobs. Already businesses are reporting 30 to 50 per cent increases in power bills. These are the obvious outcomes but what is less known is the real cost of the power price hike to the people of Victoria. So residents will be hit twice: paying their own bills and for the hikes government-run institutions will also pay. It may be a hidden cost now but it won’t be for long - just watch the budget. Councils already stressed about a 2.5 per cent cap on rate increases will be sweating. So, too, volunteer-run organisations like surf lifesaving, Girl Guides and sport clubs. Can readers imagine a small country footballnetball club affording the cost of lights for training during winter? Fund-raising will now be directed toward paying for the Premier’s expensive power. Hazelwood nuked by renewables Derek Lipka (Letters, 24 March) should reconsider his view of electricity generation. Nobody said Engie was asked to close Hazelwood. The station needs money spent on it to keep going for a couple more decades, which Engie can’t afford. Why? Because Hazelwood couldn’t make a profit by propping up renewables. Under the Renewable Energy Target, renewables, which are already highly subsidised, are mandated to be used first before coal or gas can enter the grid. This mandatory figure is to be doubled in the eastern states to 40 to 50 per cent. Yet, as South Australia has shown, renewables are incapable of keeping lights on. By keeping coal in the ground and banning even conventional gas exploration, Victoria is ensuring its own lights-out. As for efficiency, Hazelwood during its last month of operation produced more electricity than all Australia’s 43 wind plants and their 2400 turbines in the National Energy Market. True, as Mr Lipka wrote, brown coal is less efficient than other coals but that doesn’t stop Ger-

1500 coal plants on way - none here Readers must be confused by the discussion about renewables: one side says they will save us from catastrophic incineration of our planet, the other says they will destroy our electricity system and economy. Here’s an extract from the latest Greenpeace coal report, Boom and Bust 2016: “Worldwide, 338GW of new coal capacity is in construction and 1086GW is in various stages of planning - the equivalent of 1500 coal plants”. China alone now has nearly 1000GW of new low-cost coal plants! So if renewables are so much better, why is the non-Western world going gangbusters on coal? Is anyone naive enough to believe that China, India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Turkey, Japan, South Korea etcetera will decide to “save the planet” and close down their coal plants? Meanwhile, back in saintly Australia we have closed 10 coal plants producing 5GW in the last 10 years and after the closure of Hazelwood this week we only have 27GW of coal generation left. But we are not allowed to replace any of them with modern, low-cost coal plants. Wind and solar are parasitic, expensive, intermittent and could not survive without huge, ongoing subsidies. Electricity generation comprises about 40 per cent of world fossil fuel usage but if renewables totally replaced fossil fuels for electricity, at astronomical cost, 60 per cent of fossil fuel use would still be unaffected. FINALLY FRIDAY

Ever gonna see that place again By Luke Voogt After four decades touring the country with The Angels the only thing that has changed is the comfort, according to guitarist and co-founder John Brewster. “We basically went on the road straightaway and we’ve been on the road ever since,” he said. “But it’s a bit more civilised nowadays.” The Angels will perform at The Gateway Hotel on 8 April as part of their ‘4x4 Across Australia’ tour, after shows in the previous two years at the hotel sold out, Brewster said. “It was often regional cities like Geelong and Newcastle which were the places for us to break (out)." Brewster was amazed to see so many young Angels fans on the tour. “Radio stations still play a lot of our music - I think the band is pretty timeless,” he said. Part of that timelessness was thanks to the band’s disdain for “teeny bopper” music, Brewster reckoned. “We were a rock band from day one. I remember when we recorded the Face to Face album and some expert came into the studio and said radio wouldn’t play us.” “Our attitude was radio can shove it, but radio played every track on the album.” Brewster recalled when the band first hit the road in a 1964 EH Holden station wagon in the mid-’70s. “We piled into that and travelled all around Australia and played week after week,” he said. The band would take on overnight trips from capital to capital in the trusty Holden to make a name for themselves. “That car never missed a beat,” Brewster said. Sometimes, they would even stop in towns for an afternoon show on their way to late-night pub gig. “I guess ’cause you’re young you can handle

ICONIC: The Angels will return to Geelong next weekend. some of that stuff,” Brewster said. But The Angels took off “like a rocket ship” in the late ’70s and abandoned the car in Brewster’s Adelaide driveway. “All of a sudden, we were flying places or hiring cars,” he said. “It sat outside my house for years, and bits kept getting taken off it.” The band has played with AC/DC and David Bowie but for Brewster nothing beats playing with rock god Chuck Berry in 1978.

“That has to be one the greatest musical memories in our lifetimes.” Fast-forward 40 years and the current line-up is like a big family, Brewster said. “No one’s precious and there’s no pressure.” The Angels tip their hats to their lost members every night on stage, Brewster said. “But the band survives and life goes on.” And as for that iconic chant, Brewster still had no idea where it originated. But he does remember hearing for the first

time - at a Mount Isa concert in 1983. Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again was a “flop” and it was the first time the band had played it in years, Brewster said. “That thing spread like wildfire around the country without our knowledge.” Brewster’s theory was that it began on a cruise ship. “That way they may have taken it back to their towns,” he said. “It’s Australian larrikinism and I love it.”

FINALLY FRIDAY More dimensions and terribly funny

ROYAL MORNING: Banjo player Peter Hooper in action.

Jazz romance with pluck By Luke Voogt Peter Hooper’s 46-year romance with the jazz began with a banjo abandoned at a taxi rank. “I basically learnt it because my father owned a banjo,” the Moolap musician told the Indy Monday. Hooper’s dad - an Adelaide ship worker snapped up the forgotten instrument from a taxi company sale. He never learnt the instrument himself, instead passing it on to his 11-year-old son. “He said ‘do you want to make use of this instrument we’ve got here?’” Hooper said. The then-teenager took to the instrument with gusto.

What’sat on

“I find it a happy instrument,” he said. “That’s in the right hands of course - I’ve heard it when it’s not.” Hooper was playing professionally by age 15, and would go on to perform in international venues from Cairo to New Caledonia. In 46 years, he has played in the Royal Australian Airforce Band, ABC Symphony Orchestra Adelaide and Adelaide Police Concert Band, among others. Hooper has appeared on TV on Good Morning Australia with Bert Newton and on ABC jazz programs. The 57-year-old also made the Hall of Fame in the Southern Jazz Club, Adelaide, in 2007 for his “exceptional service” to music in the state.

But the highlight of his career remains playing Andrew Firth, “one of the best clarinet players in the world“. Next month Hooper will play several gigs in his home city with five-piece outfit Royal Morning, including an Easter show at Geelong RSL. The band’s original trumpet player Derek Dalton will fly over for the gig. “I’ll just have to work over my old memory to remember all the songs we used to do,” Hooper said. The band has covered the hits of Kenny Ball and Dutch Swing College for 26 years. Hooper will play at Pistol Pete’s on 6 April, Geelong RSL on 16 April and in Geelong CBD on 18 April.

HEADLINERS: The Sinking Teeth.

SATURDAY

Leading roles for our young musos Two young Surf Coast musicians will play leading roles in more ways than one at a youth music festival in Anglesea next week. Immanuel Dreessens-Owusu and Seb Fischer will both play in bands on the bill for SHEBANG! Youth Music Event after also helping organise the show. Owusu will perform with his Immy Owusu and Band, while Fischer will take the stage as part of Neuritis. Melbourne punk-rock trio The Sinking Teeth will headline, with funk/blues/rock outfit Righteous Desmond and alternative band De Porsal rounding out the bill. The event will be under the umbrella of FReeZA, a State Government initiative helping young Victorians plan and run drug, smoking and alco-

hol-free events with no pass-outs. Thirteen-year-old Owusu said the free all-ages show at Anglesea would be part of celebrations for National Youth Week, from 31 March to 9 April. “It’s a great event for people who want to listen to some awesome music and have a good time,” he said. Anglesea Memorial Hall will host SHEBANG! Youth Music Event on 7 April, with doors opening at 5.45pm. Organisers said the gig would be “fully-supervised”. Entry would be free although patrons could make a gold-coin donation upon entry, with proceeds put back into the FReeZA program, the organisers said.

The Ponds Hotel is the perfect place to stop for coffee or breakfast on your way to the coast with its new cafe. The hotel has sold quality, affordable meals since the 1970s and has now added premium Julius Meinl coffee to the menu. “It’s a good atmosphere, you can come in, sit and relax before shopping,” says hotel manager Margaret Spence. The new cafe stocks all the favourites, like home-made muffins, fresh water creek sponges and fuchsias - with gluten-free options available. Since the cafe opened a month ago it’s served breakfast every Saturday and Sunday from 8.30am.“There were often people in the car park waiting for the hotel to open before we had the cafe,” Margaret says. The cafe has options from a traditional English

SCHOOL HOLIDAYS

Try kids holidays the fun Rollerway

12341170-AMB13-17

As school holidays approach, Rollerway is again gearing up for another fun holiday. Centre manager Ashlie Aparicio says there is nothing like seeing kids “who can barely do up their skates” learn to skate in a matter of minutes. “It inspires me to keep training myself,” says the Australian Inline Hockey team rep. Ashlie has skated almost since learning to walk and grew up playing inline roller hockey at the Newtown rink. She’s the fourth generation of the 40-year-old family business. “My great-grandfather helped my grandparents as their skate mechanic at this centre,” she says. And now, with her nephews hitting the rink, the fifth generation is raring to go. Ashlie’s father Raul, who owns the centre, reckons skating is perfect for family fun. “Anyone can have a go, regardless of age; from one-year-olds to their grandparents,” he says. “Generations of people who have skated here as little kids have come back here as adults, with kids of their own.” Rollerway even caters for birthdays; a fun, active and great value alternative to children’s parties, according to Raul. Hundreds of kids and adults will roll up to the centre to hire roller skates and rollerblades for its holiday sessions, Ashlie says. “I think the key is the amazing atmosphere we create - who doesn’t like music and bright lights?”

GOOD TO GO: Kids can learn to skate in minutes. Rollerway Skate Centre is open every day over the holidays (Except Good Friday and Easter Sunday) at 6-8 Lambert Avenue, Newtown. Phone 0411 335 544 or visit rollerway.com.au for information and opening times.

handicapped toilet, a “flat deck with no bumps” and drop-down white seats, allowing easy access for people to fish off the boat in a wheelchair. “I’m also supplying a defibrillator on board and one of the bench seats can turn into a bed.” But the challenge is not over for Mr Neal. “There are more exciting things coming in 2017. I’m just looking forward to making people happy.”

The RAAF Museum is filled with over 30 display aircraft and a magnitude of memorabilia tracing the history of the RAAF, and fascinating tales of heroic deeds.

Corio Princess is the only vessel of its type in Australia. The fishing charter will transport up to 49 passengers around the bay, including the disabled. Newcomb designer Charles Neal noticed “there was no way of getting disabled people on board of fishing charters”. “So I decided I would design a boat for disabled people - now a whole family can come on board,” the 75-year-old says. The shipwright grew up wanting to be a carpenter and has built boats since he was 16. “I just loved messing around with boats. I was going to be in the navy.” Corio Princess is quickly gaining interest from retirement villages, Probus, nursing homes and other clubs for its accessibility. “We all know a person in a wheelchair,” Mr Neal says. Disabled friend Brian Kiley has given Mr Neal support and encouragement throughout the building process. He said his friend will be “absolutely thrilled” to be on board to fish. “He’ll be my guest of honour. I have already employed one disabled person and I want to employ more. “The galley has been designed so that someone can cook from a wheelchair.” Other disabity-friendly features include a

Find relief from pain of arthritis Joint pain is most commonly experienced in the feet, toes, ankles and knees. Symptoms can include aching, swelling and stiffness, making standing and other activities painful. We asked musculoskeletal podiatrist, Dr David Kavanagh, from one of Australia’s leading foot and leg pain practices, Foot and Leg Pain Clinics, to explain. “There are many causes of joint pain. It can be the result of over-use, faulty biomechanics, an injury or accident, but it could also be a sign of arthritis, of which rheumatoid and osteoarthritis are most common. “Osteoarthritis is caused by mechanical wear and tear of joints, so usually occurs in older people. “Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease, where the body’s own immune system attacks the joints and can affect people of all ages, including children. “Therefore an accurate diagnosis and correct

treatment is very important.” The most qualified practitioner to diagnose and treat pain and injury associated with the feet and legs is a musculoskeletal podiatrist who has specific expertise in biomechanics and musculoskeletal concerns. Apart from thorough and accurate diagnostics and assessment, an experienced musculoskeletal podiatrist can provide advice and treatments including: specific exercises for strengthening and conditioning, general exercise and nutritional advice to assist healing and weight bearing strain, treatment plans to address faulty biomechanics, orthoses prescription, advice on appropriate shoe selection, dry needling and natural regenerative injection therapies such as Prolotherapy and PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma). If you have joint pain, injuries or arthritis you can get expert advice at Foot and Leg Pain Clinics in Geelong. Call 1300 328 300. Mention this article for $50 off initial consults.

Car salesmen and cousins Luke and Justin Hanneysee say their customers make the job worthwhile. “We want to thank Geelong people for supporting us,” Luke says. “It helps us support businesses and charities in the region.” Mike Hanneysee Car Sales uses auto electricians, mechanics, tyre fitters, painters, upholsterers and a number of other trades in Geelong. “Spending your money locally means we can reinvest the money locally,” Luke says. The cousins sell to people from all walks of life, from first-car buyers to drivers looking to upgrade. “We also specialise in European cars which not many places in Geelong do," Luke says.

The dealership’s location means anyone from Geelong can try before they buy, he adds. “We’re happy for someone to take a car for half a day and have a coffee in Barwon Heads before they make the investment.” And last of all, buying locally guarantees piece of mind. “We RACV test all our cars and we make sure they have service books and history with them,” Luke says. The dealership has a courtesy car for any customers needing work done. “They can bring a car back if they do have a warranty issue and we can fix it up,” Luke says. “That doesn’t happen too often though.”

Trusty experts in Geelong for servicing Euro vehicle brands Customers rely on the fine-tuned expertise of German Automotive to ensure they are prepared for any lengthy trip. General manager Ben Buckle said German Automotive always tries to improve its service to customers. The German Automotive team has the latest equipment and specialises in European brands, specifically Volkswagen, Mercedes Benz, Audi, Skoda and Porsche. “We’re set up to dealer standard for these brands and take great pride in meeting the needs of our customers who have come to rely on us over the years,” Ben said. “We’ve invested heavily in both training and state-of-the-art equipment and two of our staff recently returned from training overseas. “This allows us to work on current models with no effect on manufacturer’s warranty at all.” The team at German Automotive uses genuine parts sourced from European suppliers and seeks customer authorisation before proceeding with any major repairs. Road worthy inspections are available and customers can benefit from the use of courtesy vehicles and a drop off/pick up service around Geelong. The workshop is equipped with dealer-standard diagnostic equipment to quickly track down any vehicle problems. German Automotive is at 8 Autumn Street, Geelong West.

FORD OWNERS

9 Autumn Street Geelong West

The team at Wayne’s Wheel Alignment and Service Centre are experts in suspension and wheel alignments. Wayne’s Wheel Alignment (WWA) offers general servicing and repairs on cars as well as dirt and road motorbikes, and suspension repairs. They also offer set-ups for race cars. Owner Rob White grew up around trucks, cars and motorbikes, and has always had an interest in classic cars. “We often have people coming in just to admire some of the old classics that our team work on,“ he said. “We’ve had Mustangs, early Holdens and Fords, Dodge Phoenixes and early Chevrolets. We’ve even had a 1937 Packard, to name a few. “The time and effort people put into restoring some of these old cars is phenomenal. It’s great to see these cars still on the road.“ Mr White said they had many loyal customers who had been coming in for the 30 odd years WWA had been in operation since ’91. “We now even have our older clients’ children and grandchildren coming in,“ he said. “We always have one-on-one time with our customers and have a bit of a friendly joke around together. “We take enormous pride in our work. We provide tips to customers so they can learn how to do things like checking their oil and tyre pressures. “We recommend drivers to get their cars serviced every six months or after each 10,000 kilometres.“ WWA is offering a free rotation and wheel balancing with every service until the end of February if you mention reading about the deal in the Geelong Indy. Wayne’s Wheel Alignment is at 25 Crows Road, Belmont. For more information, phone 5244 3742 or visit facebook.com/wayneswheelalign.

SPORT Jumping in against Roos, Rhys takes on the Beast Rhys Stanley will again take on one of the AFL’s best ruckmen when Geelong faces North Melbourne on Sunday. Fremantle star Aaron Sandilands belted Geelong’s ruckman last Sunday but the Cats still managed to limit his effectiveness in their 48-point victory. “We fought hard against him all day,” Stanley said. “(But Todd’s) a whole different beast altogether, the way he jumps and moves around the ground. It will be another challenge, we’ll just throw everything at them.” The AFL’s controversial new third man up rule still occasionally caught Stanley off guard despite having the offseason to prepare. “I was getting to a stoppage very late and the umpire got caught behind an opponent and Mitch sort of put his hand up as a ruckman, so I just stood and watched, I suppose.” Cats coach Chris Scott said the AFL’s best “exexponent” of the third man up Mark Blicavs was still immensely valuable despite the rule change. “We’ve always felt that he’s a unique stoppage player without the third man up.” With Jarrad Waite out for North with a shoulder injury Majak Daw will likely come into the side. But Scott said he would still use Harry Taylor as a forward or to run the ball out of defence despite the Kangaroo’s tall forward line. “We’re still relatively tall without Harry. But

BIG TASK: Rhys Stanley will again face one of the AFL’s best ruckmen, Todd Goldstein in this weekend’s game against North Melbourne. 138943_02 we do respect the challenge that those North Melbourne key forwards represent,” he said. Scott was taking no chances with star mid-

fielder Cam Guthrie and said he was unlikely to play on Sunday. “He’s been a very, very good player for us and we need to make sure when he comes back he’s ready to perform at 100 per cent.” Cats defender Jake Kolodjashnij will also miss out as will excitement machine Nakia Cockatoo after sustaining a thumb injury. Cockatoo will miss up to a month after kicking an early contender for Goal of the Year against Fremantle. Scott said the Cats would not underestimate North Melbourne who “looked to have West Coast on the ropes” in the first quarter last weekend. Dangerfield racked up 48 possessions last year against the Roos and should again be a threat. Scott laughed at the superstar sneaking into an opposition huddle last week. “He’s a different cat, Danger. He’s a ruthless competitor but he does see the lighter side as well.” Scott also saw the lighter side of his and twin brother Brad’s well-documented tantrums in the coach’s box, insisting he was the most animated of the pair. “I’ve seen some pretty ugly vision of myself so I’d be surprised if you could match some of that rubbish.”

Warriors look ahead after crushing loss in final seconds By Josip Zilic After a gut-wrenching loss to league leaders Avondale in the final seconds of the match last Saturday, North Geelong coach Micky Colina reinforced that there was still plenty on offer for his charges to collect the points required to survive in NPL1 for 2017. The challenges don’t get any easier though, this Saturday night at Olympic Village the Warriors take on Heidelberg, which had a comefrom-behind 3-2 win against Green Gully, with danger men Kenny Athiu and former A-League prodigy Adrian Zahra among the scorers. In their battle against top-of-the-table Avondale the Warriors were steadfast in the opening stanza with little on offer for either side to open the scoring. The best opportunity went to Juso Julardzija on 30 minutes when he quickly took the option to push the ball wide of the area instead of having a crack himself from just outside the box. Avondale don’t allow for too much room in their defence and it’s no wonder they have only three goals so far this season, however when the opportunities arise they need to be taken and Bobby Vidanoski was guilty of spurning two of them in the second half after some good combination work through the middle. Avondale took the lead on 60 minutes though, Daniel Zilic upended Yitay Towns in the area and former Melbourne City player Jonatan Germano dispatched the spot kick dutifully. Colina went about making substitutions and changing formation, which suited the Warriors more - with substitutions Kene Eze and Nicholas Jurcic offering more drive and creating some unsettling moments for Avondale. As the match was drawing to an end with the fourth official indicating three extra minutes, North won a free kick on the edge of the box, Matt Thorne stepped up and curled a low hard drive into the bottom of the net to level proceedings and what most thought was a rescue of a point. Unfortunately for the Warriors it wasn’t to be, Avondale won a throw-in deep into their forward third and a flick on and a slight glancing header went unchallenged for Kamal Ibrahim to register the winner and the three points for the visitors, deflating the North Geelong players, coaches and fans alike.

Fuller catches are all around ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Last weekend’s near-perfect weather saw anglers set out in all directions. Corio Bay through to Alcoa Pier hosted large schools of Australian salmon - at times erupting on the surfacing in spectacular fashion. Anglers casting soft plastics into the commotion caught fish to 1.5kg. Trelly’s Fishing World Geelong’s Adam Van Der Lugt was among anglers to find the salmon, noting the intensity of the feeding frenzy. Nearby, the spoil grounds were a hot spot for pinkie snapper, with soft plastics again most effective. St Leonards continued producing good numbers of King George whiting. Anglers fishing into the evening boated the most fish. Squid were also taken over nearby weed beds in 4m of water on size 3 jigs. Queenscliff was popular for targeting gummy shark, whiting and kingfish. Ellie Gibson and father Wayne boated a small gummy and a silver whiting before making a move, with Ellie using the whiting as bait to eventually land a 5.16kg gummy on 1kg line - a pending ANSA junior record. Peri and Michael Stavropoulos ventured offshore on Sunday morning, encountering good numbers of pinkie snapper, tiger flathead and some large southern calamari. Setting out at first light Saturday, Daniel Baden and I also fished off Barwon Heads. In near glass-calm conditions it was easy to spot surface activity from large schools of Australian salmon and kingfish. Casting stick bait and Sea Iron Pelacus lures, we boated kingfish to just on legal size and some thumping salmon to just over 3kg. We also spotted some schools of southern bluefin tuna but they proved too hard to tempt. The Barwon River estuary kept anglers busy with plenty of silver trevally, which snapped up pippie baits. Elephant fish also featured in anglers’ bags. Portland continued producing bluefin tuna to 25kg for anglers trolling near Julia Reef with small skirted lures. Freshwater anglers found Lake Bullen Merri worth the drive for Chinook salmon averaging 1.5kg. Fishing deep with the aid of a downrigger or anchoring up and sending down pilchard fillets among a berley trial were effective tactics, with the odd rainbow trout also caught. Wurdee Boluc Reservoir - The Lake of 1000 Casts - fished reasonably well for redfin to 40cm on spoon-type lures cast near weed patches. Next week should be worth fishing offshore for kingfish or maybe even tuna if the weather’s suitable, otherwise the bay could be worth a shot for snapper and whiting off St Leonards. Freshwater anglers should continue casting away at Wurdee Boluc for redfin and rainbow trout.

POTENTIAL RECORD: Ellie Gibson with her 5kg gummy shark, caught on 1kg line. THORNE IN THE SIDE: Matt Thorne in action for the North Geelong Warriors. (Ivan Dugandzic) 31 GEELONG INDY Friday, 31 March, 2017
