MONOMEITH
SIGNIFICANCE OF 'MONOMEITH PARK' FROM PAGE 33 MONOMEITH Park, a substantial and historically significant rural holding of some 565 acres (three titles), in the outer south eastern Melbourne region, lies in what is widely recognised as being among the finest grazing country in Australia. It is steeped in rich history from early settlement days, when Monomeith was initially settled and established as a much larger tract of grazing farmland stretching across the greater part of Monomeith and Caldermeade. Hundreds of prime bullocks were driven in mobs for many years on the long trek from Monomeith to the Newmarket saleyards, a feat ably taken care of by the well-known character “little Billy Matthews who reputedly drove the Monomeith mob by himself. In 1886, Monomeith was subdivided by auction when other local families, still farming the area, including Glasscocks,
purchased various portions of the holding. It was noted that at that time the Bourke family retained the finer portion of this renowned grazing holding and this is captured in the following extract from the book “Memoirs of a Stockman by Harry Worthington Peck: “However, the Bourke brothers at Old Monomeith Homestead of some 2000 acres have today the pick of the estate carrying some 3000 cattle of mixed ages and all fattening. This is probably a record for the Commonwealth and proves the virtue of top-dressing even on the richest natural pastures. The property continues a long and proud history from late 1800s spanning three generations of the Bourke family who had originally owned large land holdings around Pakenham. That tradition of producing prime beef cattle for both the local and export markets continues to this day. The property can also proudly boast the honour of having been graced by the
presence of Australia’s Cattle King, Sir Sidney Kidman on both social and business occasions. Monomeith Park is situated approximately 85km from Melbourne and 110km from the international airport via the M1 freeway and in close proximity to the major commercial centres of Casey and Cardinia, schools and shopping and only a short distance from the leading racing centres of Cranbourne and the new “world class, state of the artâ€? Stylish and sophisticated, The Urban by Monomeath sits amid other quality homes at 25 Patricia Loop.
