After many years of calling Eumundi home, the Australian Body Art Festival will this year move to Cooroy - and what a good move that is. There must be something in the water out at Cooroy or maybe it’s the fresh air, but the locals have a way of mobilising themselves for any cause. I don’t doubt for a moment that this weekend’s Body Art Festival will be outstanding. Care will have been taken to create an exceptional experience for all who attend, the town and its people will be showcased, along with local talent. Cooroy just has such a subtle yet effective way of celebrating all that is wonderful and great about it. And that is surely with no small thanks to one of the community’s most active members, Danielle Taylor. The Cooroy Chamber of Commerce president is probably too busy today to stop and read the paper, but I hope she is aware of how much wonderful work she does for the Cooroy community. See you this weekend at the Australian Body Art Festival! Noosa Today’s festival feature appears on pages 42-43. ● Jolene Ogle

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT… Vince and Daniela Giovanniello and their two girls have been visiting Noosa from Melbourne and were having a relaxed family day at Noosa Main Beach on Friday. They’ve enjoyed the week in Noosa so much they’re planning their next holiday here already.

Michael Donovan pictured with Member for Noosa Glen Elmes as he receives the 2016 Noosa Electorate Queensland Day Award.

FOUNDATION SLAMMED The inaugural chairman of the Noosa Biosphere management group has slammed the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation calling for an independent review of the organisation, its processes and constitution. Michael Donovan was the first chair of the Noosa Biosphere management committee before it was dissolved and the new Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation (NBRF) founded by Noosa Council in 2014. Mr Donovan served from 2008 to 2011, which overlapped with his time as the chair of Tourism Noosa. Last week (30 March), Noosa Today reported documentary evidence showed a former board member bullied an NBRF employee resulting in a “psychological injury” and a successful WorkCover claim. Mr Donovan slammed council’s response that the NBRF was a “completely separate entity with a completely separate board” and former chair Scott Williams’ statement that if there was an incident of bullying it was “private”. “Something is wrong here and needs to be fixed and now,” he said. “It is not good enough to say ‘it’s private’. It’s not good enough to say it is a ‘completely separate entity with a completely separate board’ yet a council staff member is mandated as a director. “It isn’t good enough, as reported, that it’s said to be ‘a then board member, a lack of support from the NBRF board and a lack of procedures’. “It is about time for an independent review of NBRF operations, processes and to test the adequacy or not of its constitution.” Mr Donovan said he questioned how “this had all come about”. “What board allows management to operate for so many years without adequate procedures to address such disputes - fairly, thoroughly and expeditiously?” he said. ●

TOURISM BOUNCES BACK FOR EASTER AFTER CYCLONE Easter is just around the corner and while ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie has devastated many of North Queensland’s tourism centres, Noosa’s tourism body has confirmed the region is open for business. Tourism Noosa CEO Damien Massingham said the Easter long weekend and school holidays are looking “extremely strong” for Noosa with the Visitor Information Centre reporting good bookings for the entire period. Mr Massingham said the storm presented “small challenges” for Noosa, but has assured visitors Noosa is open for business. “We have received positive feedback post-storm that (tourism providers) are well and truly open and are looking forward to providing a warm Welcome to Noosa to our visitors,” he said. Mr Massingham’s comments came as Noosa recorded significant growth in domestic visitor spend,

PEACEFUL PROTEST TO SAVE ELANDA A new community group called Protect Elanda has announced a peaceful protest against a proposal to downgrade the fish habitat grading at Elanda Point. The group is protesting plans for the construction of a jetty at Elanda Point that would require the current fish habitat management zoning to be downgraded from an A to a B. The Discovery Group managing director Wade Batty has previously said the planned development at the site would remove 1500 vessel movements from the lower reaches of the Noosa River and also allow the tourism operator to “implement a long-term sustainable approach

numbers and nights in the year to December 2016, with overnight domestic visitors spending more than $716m in Noosa, a 31 per cent increase on the previous year. The National Visitor Survey for December 2016, recently released by Tourism Research Australia, also showed that 883,000 Australians chose Noosa for an overnight holiday, a 17.5 per cent increase on the previous year, along with visitor nights in Noosa being now 3.5 million nights, a 17.4 per cent rise. Mr Massingham said these latest figures were a great credit to the local tourism operators and congratulated and thanked them for all their efforts as the increases were significantly higher than the statewide and national growth. Mr Massingham said while Noosa was looking strong for Easter, he also wanted to encourage Noosa and the wider community to support northern operators in Mackay and the Whitsundays in whatever way possible. ● to our operation” as well as address the vessels’ impact on property owners, other river users, foreshore areas and the marine environment. “Relocating our tour operations to Elanda Point will achieve all of these outcomes,” he said. In an email to supporters, the Protect Elanda group announced a peaceful, artistic “get together” at Buffalo Park, Boreen Point, from noon to 5pm on Sunday 9 April. The group has planned an afternoon of creativity for like-minded people who “wish to share our beautiful, unspoilt lake environment”. The group has also planned a “save Elanda” flotilla at 2pm, and said anyone with a kayak, boat or canoe was welcome to take part. ● 12345282-PB14-17

COVER STORY

DANNY’S

BUDDY GOING PLACES anny Simmonds has a lot to smile about lately. Trained as an engineer and a permanent fixture to Noosa far from his home in Birmingham, UK, this young entrepreneur is on the precipice of something big. With a start-up business recently securing a staggering $1.8 million in funding and an engagement to his beautiful partner Rachel, you could say Danny has had one heck of a year. His start-up venture ’Buddy,’ which is being developed into a mobile app for download on iOS and Android, will be launched in Australia and New Zealand this spring, and has been creating quite a buzz in the innovation and start-up world. It all began when Danny took holidays from his Melbourne engineering job for a couple of weeks in the sun of Noosa. A chance meeting with his now fiancée, Rachel, meant that all Danny’s plans came to a halt and Noosa became his new home. Beginning work with Rachel’s family business, the Global Cafe and Resort on William Street in Noosaville, the couple eventually took over the cafe where Danny has worked for the last six years. Exploring new ways to draw in backpackers staying at Global to eat in at the cafe, Danny came up with a simple idea. Using wristbands bought from the local Reject Shop and discount incentives, business was booming. “It began as something just to help out the locals and support my father-in- law’s business,” Danny said. “It worked so well, I decided to get some other businesses on board where the backpackers can get discounts in other businesses around Noosa, and I had 25 businesses jump on board straight away,“ he said. Before long, he took the idea to other resorts who were selling over 100 per day, and Danny realised he was onto something.

D

“IT HAS GROWN BIGGER THAN ME NOW, SO BUDDY WILL NEED TO BE BASED FROM MELBOURNE BY THE END OF THE YEAR…” “I wanted to take this across the whole coast and it became a bit of a full time job at this point,” he said. So he hit the pavement and began working to take it to a new level. Qld Government innovation scheme got wind of Danny’s start-up business and contacted him with some opportunities. “They invited me in to work with mentors and encouraged me to go digital, get an app, make a website, go global. The benefits I got from this were incredible,” Danny said. “I was given so much guidance how to move forward, and they suggested I research as much as possible at this point. “I packed up our house and bought a caravan and drove around Australia. I spoke to about 500 businesses from Port Douglas down to Melbourne and the feedback was out of this world.

“It took seven months,” he said. Inspired by platforms like TripAdvisor and Groupon, Danny’s idea had transformed into an app which helps localcafes, restaurants and takeaway shops gain exposure to new customers. Welcome to the latest restaurant pocket guide which is about to go global, Buddy. With the help of Queensland’s chief entrepreneur Mark Sowerby, Danny says he is also being introduced to industry heavyweights like Wotif.com founder Graeme Wood as his business takes shape. Most recently receiving $1.8 million in capital from two private investors, Buddy has been given the cash injection it needed to launch. “Users will have thousands of happy hours at their fingertips, as well as menus, opening hours and booking links,” Danny said. The app will tailor itself specifically to the user by asking specific questions, to understand preferred tastes, habits and allergies, so that their landing page is full of businesses perfectly suited to their needs. You can upload your pictures of your food which connects straight to the business’ Instagram page, and the business can receive bookings 24-7 straight through to them. “A business will receive reports on likes, recommendations, and the app will connect to the users’ Facebook, giving the restaurant over 300 times more exposure. “The business listings are idiot proof.” The best part about Buddy is helping businesses move an excess of stock.

When a restaurant needs to move stock, they can create a menu special and push notifications out in their radius to reach Buddy users and gain instant exposure for the deal. Danny has honed the features of the Buddy to incorporate some pretty exciting user benefits, too. “You can be walking past a restaurant and not realise it has just kicked off its happy hour. You have tailored Buddy to recognise you enjoy the happy hour specials, so when you’re nearby one, Beacon Notification will buzz your phone with an alert. “It’s very cool,” he said. With over 2500 pre-registered businesses and 80,000 pre-registered users waiting for the app to be launched, Buddy is taking marketing into the 21st century. Buddy is set to launch this spring, and with industry predictions for the app to be on three continents by 2020, Danny is preparing for a life-changing couple of years. Asking his girlfriend Rachel to marry him during a trip to Bali last year is the icing on the cake for this whirlwind entrepreneur. “Rachel is very down to earth. She takes each day as it comes and helps remind me how to keep my feet on the ground,” Danny said. “If it wasn’t for her, this would never have happened. She has backed me and supported me every step of the way,” he said. “It has grown bigger than me now, so Buddy will need to be based from Melbourne by the end of the year,” he said. In a couple of months, Danny heads off to San Francisco for more research. “I’ve been invited to Silicon Valley to speak at some innovation entrepreneurial expos and while I’m there, I will be visiting Facebook HQ and Twitter, which will be fantastic,” Danny said. With Buddy planned for expansion into South East Asia, Europe and the States by 2020, Danny Simmonds is in for the ride of his life. “It has been a very long, hard, painful, exhausting journey to get here. This has changed my life big time. I’m nervous, but so excited for what’s to come.” ●

Newly engaged couple Danny and Rachel are excited for what’s ahead of them.

Danny’s app ‘Buddy’ has recently secured $1.8 million funding.

NEWS NOOSA MAN CHARGED

KERBSIDE CLEAN-UP IS BACK

A Noosa man has been charged with six counts of indecent treatment of a child under 16. Detectives from the Noosa Child Protection Investigation Unit said they had charged a man with indecent treatment offences in relation to incidents that took place back in the mid-1990s. A 67-year-old Noosa man has been charged on six counts and is due to appear in Noosa Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 18 April. ●

CRIME SPREE CHARGES Police have charged a man with a string of offences following a crime spree throughout Noosa Shire and beyond. Ipswich detectives charged the man in relation to a number of offences that occurred in Noosa and Townsville between 13 February and 27 March. Police will allege the Ipswich man robbed a service station on Poinciana Avenue in Tewantin on 13 February before trying to rob another service station in Cranbrook on 24 February. Police believe they intercepted a car on 1 March in Pomona, in which the 21-year-old man was a passenger, but he fled the scene. Police will also allege the man threatened a man with a knife before stealing a scooter that was parked outside a restaurant on St Andrews Drive in Tewantin. The man has been charged with three counts of stealing, two counts each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. He was also charged with one count each of wilful damage, trespass, possession of a knife in a public place, fail to stop motor vehicle, evade fare, enter with intent, assault, attempted robber, assault occasioning bodily harm, obstruct police, and armed robbery. The man surrendered himself to police in Ipswich. ●

The kerbside clean-up is back this month with Tewantin first in line.

MP BACKS JETTY Noosa MP Glen Elmes has confirmed his support for a proposed jetty at Elanda Point. Last week (30 March) Noosa Today reported the proposed redevelopment of Elanda Point by tourism operator The Discover Group had received a letter of support from Mr Elmes, but the jetty did not have the MP’s supported. Since then, Mr Elmes has confirmed his support of plans to “declutter” the lower reaches of the Noosa River, which was previously stated in his letter of support.

The much-loved kerbside clean-up is back this month with Tewantin residents the first in line for the seven-week event. Residents in Tewantin will have their unwanted rubbish and junk collected on Monday 24 April, before the clean-up makes its way throughout the shire. There have been a few changes to this year’s clean-up, and Noosa Council waste manager Wayne Schafer said residents would receive an information flyer in the mail in early April to explain the new system. Unlike previous years, the collection will now take place during the week, instead of on the weekend. “Rubbish will need to be at the kerb before the Monday of the collection week,” Mr Schafer said. Residents must sort their rubbish into three separate piles: useful household items that can be easily repaired; metal items for recycling; and all other rubbish. Each pile will be collected by a different truck. For further information, consult the brochure, which will be delivered to homes prior to collection day. Phone 5329 6500 or visit the council website at www.noosa.qld.gov.au/kerbside-collection. ● “The Discovery Group is using the biggest boats most frequently in the Noosa River and the use is increasing at eight per cent each year,” he said. “Any plans to declutter the lower reaches of the river is a good thing. It will save that area from erosion.” Mr Elmes would not confirm if he supported the downgrading of Elanda Point from a Fish Habitat Management A area to a B, but said the jetty proposal will be subject to assessment from the relevant government departments. ●

NEWS SHARK ATTACK ESCAPE

STAR RECRUIT FOR SECRETS

A local man has had a lucky escape after a shark bit off the back of his kayak in Moreton Bay at the weekend. The 39-year-old man was paddling towards Mud Island in a group of nine people when his kayak was attacked and began to sink around 8 kilometres east of Woody Point. Water Police responded to the man’s triple-zero call and were able to track his location by using incoming aircraft to Brisbane Airport. The man was rescued by Water Police just before 4pm on Sunday 2 April, and his damaged 6.5 metre kayak was also recovered from the water, sporting a large hole from where the shark had bitten into it. The Maroochydore man was uninjured although quite shaken and glad to be out of the water. Sergeant Gordon Thiry from Brisbane Water Police said it was very fortunate they were able to find the man in time. “We would encourage anyone heading out on the water to always wear a life jacket, carry an EPIRB and make sure you let someone else know where you’re travelling to and how long it will take,” he said. ●

EASTER ROAD SAFETY Wet conditions will be the biggest threat on local roads as the police launch their new road safety campaign to coincide with Easter school holidays. The campaign is urging motorists to drive to conditions and check for road closures before leaving home. Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Mike Keating said extra officers would target the Fatal Five over the school holiday period with a high visibility presence on the roads. The current road toll for 2017 stands at 54 compared to 55 last year. The QPS traffic operation will be conducted from Friday 31 March until Friday 21 April and incorporate the Easter long weekend, with school resuming on Tuesday 18 April. ●

Secrets’ new co-managing directors Mike Parsell and Jane Meredith.

The secret is out! Former Michael Hill CEO Mike Parsell and Noosa-based jewellery brand Secrets have forged a business partnership. Secrets launched their first store in Hastings Street in 2000 with the desire to make luxury jewellery affordable for all women. Co-founder and managing director Jane Meredith said she had been looking for someone with the expertise to grow the brand and found it in Mr Parsell, who has more than 36 years’ experience in the fine jewellery industry. Ms Meredith said she was proud and honoured that Mr Parsell was partnering with Secrets. “Mr Parsell brings the high level of expertise, experience and knowledge of the industry that thebusiness needs for continued success,” she said. “I’m particularly delighted that Mr Parsell shares my passion and commitment for the business and understands the uniqueness of the brand.” Mr Parsell said he was excited about the partnership and future potential of Secrets as a global business, which is positioned for growth nationally and internationally. “Secrets reflects the changing mindset of how the consumer of today engages with the jewellery category because the brand appeals to women who want beautifully designed and crafted luxury jewellery at a price they can afford,” he said. ●

NEWS KOALA GRANTS The State Government is offering up to $600,000 for research projects that will improve the outcomes for Queensland’s koala population. Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection Steven Miles, who previously visited Makepeace Island, said $600,000 in funding was available under round one of the koala research grants, as part of the Community Sustainability Action grants program. “The grants will provide passionate and dedicated researchers with the opportunity to undertake research projects that will inform more effective koala conservation policy and management activities,” Mr Miles said. Grants of up to $100,000 (excluding GST) are available to eligible tertiary education institutions and other entities involved in scientific research. Applications close on Friday 5 May. For more information or to apply, visit www.ehp.qld.gov.au. ●

ATHLETES REWARDED Nine local athletes were among 22 congratulated by Federal Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien for their achievements. The young sportspeople were awarded $500 each from the Australian Government’s Local Sporting Champions program. Mr O’Brien said the cost of participating in sporting events can be quite high, so the funding will help to ease that pressure and assist them towards achieving their sporting goals. Among the recipients were Tewantin’s Lachlan Dudgeon and Shayla Sinclair, Zane Branco of Noosaville, Olivia Emanuel, Max Moore, Mia Smallman and Max Smallman from Sunshine Beach, Indiabeau Laborie of Noosa Heads and Lucy White of Castaways Beach. Applications for the grants can be made at any time throughout the year, through the Australian Sports Commission’s website www.ausport.gov. au/champions. For further information, contact Mr O’Brien’s office on 1300 301 968. ●

Council is calling on all residents to ramp up their recycling efforts in readiness for the roll-out of the new three-bin system in September.

STRIVING TOWARDS ZERO WASTE Noosa Council is calling on all residents to ramp up their recycling efforts in readiness for the roll-out of the new three-bin system in September, as part of the Towards Zero Waste initiative. More than 9000 homes and duplexes in urban areas of the shire will receive a new garden waste bin, in addition to their usual recycling and general waste bins. Council’s Waste and Environmental Health Manager Wayne Schafer explained that if 14,000 households were all using their garden waste bin correctly, thousands of tonnes of organic waste would be diverted from landfill per year. “This means that we will be reducing the amount of global warming methane gas we produce and at the same time extending the life of our landfill. It is

a classic win-win,” he said. Currently, council recycles garden waste by turning it into garden mulch and making it available back to residents for free. “As a council we are very keen to recycle as much as possible, so we are also making larger 360 litre bins available from 1 September for both recycling and garden waste, upon request,” Mr Schafer said. Property owners who would like a 360 litre bin are urged to contact council before 30 April if they want to order a larger bin for the start of the new three-bin system in September. Phone 5329 6500. For more information about the new garden waste bin service please visit www.noosa.qld.gov. au/garden-green-waste-services. ●

Planning and design firm Callison RTKL is behind the creative design process for the centre expansion and setting the long term vision for Sunshine Plaza. The centre’s design is inspired by extensive consumer research and represents the guest experience of locals and tourists alike. When the expansion is finished, customers will enjoy over 34,000 square metres of additional retail space with the region’s first David Jones department store, a new BIG W, a refurbished Myer, a new Amaroo Street mall entrance, Cornmeal Promenade dining precinct, large format fashion operators and over 100 new specialty stores, bringing highly soughtafter fashion brands to the Sunshine Coast. ●

STUDENTS DIG IN Noosa District State High School Year 12 students Alana Van Der Linden and Chandler Kamradt spent three days helping the region prepare for the storm last week. The students volunteered with the SES, filling sandbags and attending to call outs in the lead-up and aftermath of ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie’s destructive path across the Noosa Shire. Over 2000 sandbags were filled by the pair each day, and Alana, who has never volunteered with the SES before, gave up her 17th birthday to spend it helping others. Alana and Chandler also volunteer with the rural

ELECTORAL BOUNDARIES The Queensland Redistribution Commission (QRC) has publicly released all 1546 submissions it received on the proposed realignment of electoral boundaries. In February, QRC unveiled the state’s most significant redistribution in more than three decades after being tasked with increasing the number of electorates from 89 to 93. QRC chairman Hugh Botting said he was pleased people took an interest in the changes but “unfortunately it seems most objections overlooked

the fact the Commission is legally bound to deal with the cold, hard numbers”. “As I said from the outset, we had to ensure each electorate has an equal number of voters so that all Queenslanders get a fair say at the ballot box,” he said. The submissions can be viewed at QRC’s website (http://boundaries.ecq.qld.gov.au/) or by contacting the Commission and requesting a paper copy. “People can then comment on the comments during a second round of consultation that runs for 10 days from 8 April,” he said. “The Commission has always listened to what Queensland voters have to say and we’re still listening.” ●

Throughout the completion, Noel was very respectful of continuing the restoration as Max would have intended, and felt confident about completing the job in a reasonable amount of time.

After two years of further work, including engine reconditioning, interior trimming, mechanical work and putting the finishing touches sympathetic to its intended level of restoration, the 90-year-old Oldsmobile is now registered and driving around the Noosa area. At the time Noel purchased the car from the family he made a commitment to Max’s daughters, Lisa and Dena, to take them for a drive when the

They were very impressed with the restoration and had a lot of fun driving in the Oldsmobile once again just as they had done half a century earlier. A lot of car restorations for one reason or another can take many years to finish or some simply come to an abrupt halt. In this instance, the owner of the car under restoration sadly died and never got to see it completed. His name was Max Edwards. Max had owned the car since 1964, having passionately wanted it after seeing it parked, driveable but derelict, in Earlwood, Sydney. He would regularly stop for fish and chips on his way to visit his mother and while waiting for them to be cooked he spotted this car in the driveway next door. He eventually bought it for 150 pounds, and as difficult to drive as it was he did take his family out in it occasionally. Max and the Oldsmobile moved to QLD in 2003 and the restoration job that Max had dreamed of finally startedit was a long and slow project by many tradespeople in Nambour. Max was suffering from a serious illness and although he could never have driven the Oldsmobile when completed, his ambition was to have it restored to its original elegance. Sadly, Max passed away in 2014, and the uncompleted Oldsmobile had to be sold by the family who lived at Lake MacDonald near Cooroy. After seeing the ad for the car in the

THE LOWDOWN FACES OF … Noosaville

THREE … Family fun activities

1

Remember board games? It’s time to dust them off and replace Xbox time with some loud and exciting board games. Game of Life is still a great family game for all ages, Monopoly is perfect for a long rainy day and scrabble. They are as fun as you make them and regular game nights with Pictionary or Charades is a great family habit made even better with friends.

2

I know water is precious and if we are conscious of our water usage around the home, then a little slip ‘n’ slide action is a childhood memory everyone should have at least once. Roll out a tarp or a roll of black plastic (the longer the better) on the lawn, leave plenty of clear space at the end, a drizzle of soap, pop the hose on low and SLIDE. Yes, adults too! Teens can snap great piccies too! Night nature walks are great fun once you’re all out in the darkness. We forget that kids don’t really venture out in the night much, so its lots of fun and a little spooky to explore the night with a torch, look for possums, listen for noises and spotlight all the cool things that come out at night. Just remember your boots!

WHAT IS SAM ROBINSON FROM WILD BUNCH MEDIA LOOKING FORWARD TO WITH THE WEATHER COOLING DOWN?

“We were business as usual here at the RSL. We had the generators running and it was actually a full house, as so many people couldn’t cook at home. We had loads of fun!” ●

“Sleeping under a blanket and wearing a pair of jeans. I’ll pull out the slow cooker and whip up an Osso Bucco.” ●

Q&A

WHAT IS NICHOLA ROSS FROM SOCIAL TAP LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST AS THE WEATHER COOLS DOWN? “Making hearty home-made soups and snuggling on the couch watching Netflix movies.” ●

DANIEL BEDFORD

Daniel Bedford from Social Tap, what will you be up to for your Easter long weekend? Heading to Diggers Camp in Northern NSW for a few days. It’s a great place to relax with family and friends. Who do you admire and why? I’m a bit of a fan of the podcaster Dan Carlin at the moment, his Hardcore History podcasts are fantastic. Best movie you’ve seen in a while? Sharknado, it’s a cinematic masterpiece! How did you weather the storm? I left early from work and had time to batten down the hatches at home. We live on a hill in Peregian, so the wind was pretty crazy.

We didn’t have any damage, but there were plenty of branches down around the yard. What makes you laugh? My little girl, Siena. She’s just under two years old, and she can never fail to bring a smile to my face. Any adventures on the horizon? Surf trip to Bali in May for a friend’s wedding. Winter? or Summer? Summer. I used to prefer winter, but since moving to the Coast I can’t go past summer. Favourite meal to cook at home? As we’re coming into winter, slow cooked lamb shanks.

MEN’S SHED OPENS DOORS The Noosa Men’s Shed swung open their doors at the weekend to welcome the community in for their first open day. The work of the group’s members is becoming more and more visible in the community since its inception in September 2014, and what began with a member base of 40 men has now swelled to 140 members. Through some great projects and partnerships with local businesses and organisations such as Noosa Council, Unity and the Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank, Noosa Men’s Shed president

John Williams and the team thought it was time to invite the public to see what the group has been doing on the Unity Water land at Noosa Heads. “Several hundred people visited on the day from the Noosa area, and we’re thrilled so many were interested in what is happening on site,” Mr Williams said. “The spirit of community was alive and well as the members proudly showed off their amazing facility which includes a woodwork shop, a metalwork shop, large garden, a painting and drawing studio, and

an ex-army building which is now our social area for meetings and get-togethers.” The Men’s Shed will soon have their own electronics workshop, leatherwork shop and re-cycling shed up and running. The Noosa Men’s is open every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning until noon, and all visitors are welcome. The Noosa Men’s Shed is located at Wallum Lane in Noosa Heads. There is also a Men’s Shed in Pomona located at 1 Memorial Avenue, Pomona. ●

TRY THIS … Bike On

FOR ACTIVE, HEALTHY KIDS

THREE …

Fitness fun for the not-so-sporty

BY HOLLIE HARRIS Our children should be getting at least one hour of physical activity per day, however a recent national report card released by AHKA (Active Healthy Kids Australia) has shown that shockingly less than one in five Australian children aged between 5-17 years are reaching this target. One way to tackle this problem according to Tracey Wyatt from local company Bike On is to get back to basics and inspire our children to get on their bikes! Bike On have been running School Holiday Bike Camps since September 2015 in Wooroi, Tewantin NP and have been nurturing the talent of some keen young riders. Locals from as young as five years have been booking in each school holidays for the sell-out camps. According to Justin Wyatt, the lead instructor from Bike On, they are now seeing some seriously talented young local riders coming through the Bike Camp Programs. To extend on the success of the programs, they have recently launched ‘Bike School’ which is a series of progressive after school sessions starting in Term two aimed to fast-track some of Noosa’s local Shredda’s talent. Justin and Tracey Wyatt’s mission is to provide kids with the tools to improve their mountain biking skills while imparting their love for the sport and the local Noosa trails.

The aim? To get our children well above the average one hour of physical activity recommended per day.

In 2014, following de-amalgamation, the Noosa Council discontinued its popular TravelSmart program which aimed to encourage our local children to cycle, walk or scooter to school. To fill this gap, Bike On have been assisting schools to apply for alternative grant funding to continue the program. In 2017, they have been successful in securing funding for 12 Sunshine Coast schools - including Tewantin State School, Noosaville State School and Sunshine Beach State School - to run a fantastic Cycle Skills Program aimed at Year 3 - Year 5 students. By facilitating grassroots cycling programs in Noosa and nurturing young riders, Bike On are aiming to get children

well above the average one hour of physical activity recommended per day. There are so many reasons why kids need to be physically active, along with the wellknown fitness angle it has also been found to help children be more confident, have better concentration, and to be better able to cope with stress and regulate their emotions. The full physical report card can be found at www.activehealthykidsaustralia.com.au For more information on Bike On’s Noosa grassroots Cycling Programs including the upcoming Easter holiday bike camps - please contact Tracey Wyatt at Bike On by calling 5474 3322 or jump online at www.bikeon.com.au ●

1

Think outside the playing field Not everyone is drawn to organised sports such as soccer or baseball. Look for other activities your child enjoys like dancing, rock climbing, swimming, or martial arts.

2

Join in the game Kids love it when their parents play with them. So encourage children’s fitness by taking a family hike. Have a game of catch. Walk or bike to school together. Play hopscotch.

3

Bring a friend along Kids love to hang out with their mates, so invite a buddy along for a bike ride, offer to bring a friend ice-skating, or head to the pool with a companion.

OPINION

Post your letters to: 36 Mary St, Noosaville, 4566 or email: newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au

BAD BEHAVIOUR Kudos to the Noosa Today (30 March) staff for exposing the unfortunate bad behaviour that seems all too common within council’s biosphere framework and shame on council for washing its hands of responsibility. So who then paid for the successful claim against the NBRF with WorkCover? Ratepayers? It’s no secret council funds the biosphere. Interesting to find on the web a group called Our Biosphere Noose; how fitting. Emma MacDonald, Cooroy.

LENSCAPE

LOOKING FOR CLUES Your writer Bill Sheehy (Noosa Today, 30 March) accuses me of spreading ‘fake news’ of an investigation into Mayor Tony Wellington, but that is ‘fake news’. Bill goes on to say the ‘subject has been refuted and now can be forgotten’. Excuse me sir, should that be the case then surely the QPS, the CCC and, more importantly the mayor himself, or his legal advisers, would have certainly commanded media exposure to tell us all what I have been asking since this QPS investigation was published in the local media months ago. Certainly, as a Noosa ratepayer who contributes to Mayor Wellington’s salary and in the name of honesty, transparency and accountability, I have requested a statement of denial of these alleged charges. Until I see or hear Mayor Wellington deny these alleged charges, whatever they are, I will pursue an answer. May I help you a little here, Bill? CCC in not an abbreviation for ‘Trevor Clarey’. No sir, it is an abbreviation for Crime Corruption Commission. But, I do commend you Bill for your loyalty to Mayor Wellington. Just have our fearless leader make a statement, please. Trevor Clarey, Boreen Point.

KEEP WELL CLEAR Peter Bayliss’s letter “Put a Cap On It” (Noosa Today 30 March) is a bit of a generalisation, but here is mine. On Thursday in the rain, proceeding carefully through shallow water on three separate occasions my vehicle was covered by the bow waves of a speeding ‘tradie’ vehicles such that the wipers could not even cope. The tool box in the back is a sign to stay clear even in good weather I find. Chris McDonnell, Doonan.

NO WORRIES MATE Workers’ penalty rates cuts? No worries. $50 billion tax cuts for multinational businesses? No worries. In the fifth richest country in the world, the adult minimum wage rate is $17.70 per hour. No worries. A $45 a week pay rise for workers? No way! Guvmint says,

Karl Heinz Schwendinger is on holidays in Noosa from Austria. “I was lucky to see this beautiful carpet snake in this very beautiful place,“ he said. If you have a wildlife, landscape or lifestyle picture you would like to send us for Lenscape, please email newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au. “A minimum wage is not an efficient way to address relative living standards or the needs of the low paid”. Really? No worries? Margaret Wilkie, Peregian Beach.

NAME AND SHAME Shame! The claim of bullying of a staff member of the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation (NBRF) must be immediately addressed. Those responsible need to be identified and called to explain to the community their outrageous actions. The NBRF is a communityfunded organisation from the ratepayers’ environmental levy and so the foundation needs to come clean, expose those guilty of bullying and be shamed in the community. Jeff Nuske, Noosa Heads.

caps as misfits driving on our roads, unbelievable. I am 75 and always wear a cap when driving, it provides protection when the sunroof is open among other attributes, so beware of me. I suppose “Niki” Lauda would fit the model of the type of driver he is depicting, plenty of burn-outs, racing, wanting to be first off at the lights, but then F1 is like that. Barry A. Smith, Tewantin.

RIVER RULES I write in response to letters and stories published in local media of late about the businesses which operate along the foreshore of the Noosa River. As Member for Noosa I have been working with the state department responsible for leasing the land to foreshore businesses - Department of Natural Resources and Mines (DNRM). When in government I secured 30-year leases for all of those businesses in order to bring certainty to each of them and to the local tourism industry along the Noosa River foreshore. More recently I have been working with Noosa Council and the DNRM to ensure these businesses are trading in accordance with their lease conditions for two very important reasons. Firstly, to ensure that the land which belongs to the community is available for public use and is not used for commercial activity that is not permitted as part of the lease agreements. Secondly, to ensure that the restaurants, coffee shops and other services that operate along Gympie Terrace do so on a level playing field. Businesses located opposite the leaseholders on the River foreshore, do so after they have paid hefty council rates, fees and charges. These businesses cannot and should not have to compete with pop-up coffee shops and the like, simply because the laws to protect them are not policed nor enforced. My office receives weekly complaints from locals who fear the Noosa River foreshore is being overtaken and is becoming congested.

The notion that foreshore businesses should be left to their own devices and be allowed to continue to creep beyond the limits of their agreed leases, at the expense of community owned open space and the jeopardy of those businesses opposite, is short-sighted. All of the businesses involved, be they adjacent to the river or along Gympie Terrace have agreed to a set of rules that govern their operation and all should comply. Glen Elmes MP, State Member for Noosa.

LISTEN TO ME I did not say it, as Woody Dass claims, but he is right (Noosa Today 30 March). A Duke University study claims that for every job lost from coal-fired power in the USA, four jobs were created in the renewable sector. The authors of the study also said: “The counties that were very reliant on the coal industry are now in the most difficult position”, referring to unemployment. They could have been talking about Australia. Woody’s conclusion, that solar electricity will therefore be four times as expensive, however, is wrong. Solar energy is still much cheaper for sustainable, dependable electricity than any fossil fuel, which is all the more reason for our nation and states to start promoting solar and wind by changing the metering of electricity from 30-minute to five-minute intervals. If that legislation could be passed this week, solar would be providing all of our electricity needs, without fear of blackouts, the price of gas, the insecurity of imported oil (cars will soon all be electric), the need for the mythical “baseload” power, increase in power costs, or drop in employment, all within five years. None of this “50 per cent of 2005 levels of CO2 by 2050”. We could be 100 per cent renewable before you’ve had five more birthdays! Thanks, Woody, for raising our awareness of this. BEHIND THE GAVEL

GORDON MACDONALD

CHANGING COURSE BRINGS A RESULT ONE of our standout auctions this weekend was originally marketed with a price. At the first open for inspection the agents were run off their feet with interest and found themselves submitting multiple contracts of sale to the seller. Sounds like the perfect cocktail to obtain a premium price, right? Well, not really ... even though the buyers were advised to put their best foot forward, we found they were reluctant to do so due to the dynamics created when in a multiple offer situation. The fear of paying well in excess of the competing offers was influencing the negotiations. At this early stage of the campaign our sellers were noosatoday.com.au

presented with two options ... negotiate with the offers presented and sell or pivot and direct the interested parties towards an auction ... they chose the latter ... The response from the buyers was extremely positive, now happy and relieved to compete in an open and transparent platform where competition was easily identified. When auction day rolled around all the original buyers were now registered to bid and the reserve was set at the highest previously submitted offer. The auction was relaxed, more like a public negotiation. The buyers just knew it would be sold to the highest bidder. As a result of competitive bidding in a transparent environment it empowered the registered bidders to truly put their best foot forward.

The result was outstanding. The property sold for well in excess of the highest previous submitted offer and the property sold to the people who submitted the lowest offer during the multiple offer situation. As a buyer, negotiating with trust and transparency is paramount. As a seller what more can you ask for, other than wanting the best from market. ● WEEKEND AUCTION RESULTS: Sydney (APM): 83% Melbourne (REIV): 82% Brisbane (APM): 52% Adelaide (APM): 66% Canberra (APM): 77% Perth (RP Data): 36% Thursday, 6 April, 2017

NOOSA TODAY 33

“My wife cares a lot more about you than

my potatoes getting cold” Being one of the Coast’s hardest working real estate agents is not all sunshine, rainbows and lollipops. So on Sundays I usually make a special effort to make a nice lunch. But when lunchtime happens to coincide with a call from a client... our meal can suddenly head for the back burner. It can often take some time before Vicki has inished describing a property in detail. And if negotiations are involved... lunch might become dinner. That clients always come before cuisine, is nevertheless a priority I understand completely. If I was about to make one of the most important inancial decisions of my life I wouldn’t want my sales person worrying about whether their spouse’s carefully cooked meal was being ignored. If you’re a seller or a buyer, all Vicki’s focus, commitment, relentless energy, and enthusiasm is exactly what you should be looking for in an agent. But it’s not easy to ind. Assuming that real estate agents are all the same is a bit like thinking that tennis players are all the same. My sister used to be pretty handy with a racquet... but not in the same way as Venus Williams’ sister. Anyway if you want someone to sell your home who’s really at the top of their game... call Vicki Cooper on 0418 231 955. You can call her at lunchtime on a Sunday if you need to. I’m used to my veggies being a bit on the cool side.

LIVE You’ll be asking for more of Oliver at the Noosa Arts, with performances until 23 April.

CONSIDER

YOURSELF

INVITED! BY HOLLIE HARRIS If you hadn’t yet heard, this is your final curtain call to get your tickets to a spectacular musical experience for audiences, young and old as Noosa Arts

Theatre present Oliver! A big cast means big talent, regulars to the theatre will love seeing the likes of Ian Mackellar, Jane Rivers and Steve Mitchell back on stage as Fagin, Mrs

Sourberry and Bill Sykes, but its the kids that steal the show. There are two Olivers (Roy Crozier and Jude Shaw) and two Artful Dodgers (Zak Crozier and Curtis Bock) who take it in turns to play the 12 shows. This is Roy’s second lead role in a musical at Noosa Arts Theatre after playing Michael Banks in Mary Poppins in 2016 with great success. Jude’s great-grandma was the children’s backstage chaperone for the original London stage run, also starring Ron Moody. Zak has taken drama classes since he was seven, both locally (LSTC) and overseas (LA) and has performed in numerous plays and musicals in Noosa. Curtis’s love for drama began six years ago and since then he has been involved in numerous plays, musicals, and TV and film productions. He was awarded Best Supporting Actor Primary

(2014) and Adjudicator’s Award (2016) at the Sunshine Coast Youth Drama Festival. Shining alongside the leads are many other young stars of tomorrow, they take their craft very seriously and spend many hours in rehearsal and also in acting classes. These are the stars of the future and its exciting to watch such talent in one show. The sensational score includes “Food Glorious Food”, “Consider Yourself”, “As Long as He Needs Me”, and more. This family musical show truly gives meaning to singing for your supper. Evenings: 13, 14, 19, 20, 21, 22 April at 7.30pm Matinees: 15, 16, 23 April at 2pm Tickets: $37 adults, $32 Concession, Member/Group $30, Under 18 $27. Preview night all tickets are all $27. Eclectic festive music

Champagne for Breakfast

25 by Adele

You may not have heard of them or you may be a fan, either way, you will enjoy the sounds of our very own community band, The Noosa District Concert Band playing at Cooroy Body Art Festival this year. Chances are, you’ve heard this talented group of musicians play many times. If you play a musical instrument and have always wanted to join a band, now is your chance. Phone Paul Ritchie on 0412 737 147 or Pamela Wright on 0438 739 844 for details. Sit and relax as the band does what they do best at Body Art Festival Sunday from 2pm. ●

Champagne for Breakfast (set in Noosa) by Maggie Christensen. Rosa Taylor is celebrating her 50th birthday with champagne. By the river. On her own. After finishing her six-year long affair with her boss, Rosa is desperate to avoid him in the workplace and determined to forge a new life for herself. Harry Kennedy has sailed away from a messy Sydney divorce and is resolute in kick-starting a new life on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. Thrown together at work, Rosa and Harry discover a secret - one that their employer is desperate to keep hidden.●

Adele is still young by any sensible metric, but much of 25, her third album, addresses heartache in one form or another throughout the passage of time. Full of wobbly-lower-lipped piano ballads and the one kiss-off, if you head straight to River Lea, track seven of this most anticipated of post-hit comebacks, and you’ll find a real gem. As always, Adele has no problem accessing the bittersweetness of an older artist. But even as she fulfils the brief here you kind of want to wrench the woman away from the ivories and order her a jug of margarita. A great album with some startling moments, but perhaps a little conservative for some tastes. ●

Tucked away among the treetops is the View Restaurant. As part of the Peppers Noosa Resort, View is a much-loved dining venue for visitors who are lucky enough to enjoy the restaurant’s stunning local produce and varied menu on a regular basis. But, head chef and long-time Noosa local Andrew Wilcox has developed a new menu just for locals, letting us all in on the secret that is one of the region’s best dining experiences. Now, while the tourists are away exploring this piece of paradise, locals are free to enjoy the View Restaurant and indulge in that holiday feeling. But it’s more than a local’s lunch; it’s a chance to get away for an hour or two, it’s a long lunch with girlfriends, it’s a cheeky lunch date with your partner. It’s a chance to enjoy all the benefits of a holiday; long, lazy and indulgent, but without the price tag. The Locals Lunch offers a two-course or a three-course lunch option from just $25. Add an extra $5 for a glass of wine or beer. The seasonal menu changes depending on what local produce the chefs can get their hands on, but on this day we sat down to enjoy a choice of tender salt and pepper calamari with chipotle mayo, smoked duck breast with a salad of orange, pecan and beetroot, and light and fluffy tempura vegetables with bonito soy and aioli. For mains, there was a choice of battered barramundi and chips, Massaman beef cheek with curried kipfler potatoes or a crusted soy bean tempeh with spiced hummus and a local bean salad. And if we could still fit in dessert, we could choose from a rich chocolate tart with exceptional peanut brittle and sweet cream or a smooth vanilla bean pannacotta with fresh local berries. Lunch was served by the charismatic and humorous restaurant manager Craig, who seated us on the terrace where we could enjoy the stunning views out to Laguna Bay. We felt like we were among the treetops. The decor is on-trend, beautifully-presented and luxurious and the service exceptional, funny and fast. The food was served quickly, and our coffee arrived before we could blink, but somehow we managed to while away two hours seated among the treetops in the cool breeze. And that’s what the Local’s Lunch is all about. It’s a chance to indulge, relax, dream and catch up, without a hefty bill at

the end. Do as the tourists do, sit back, look out to that view and take it all in. After all, we do live in paradise. The Locals Lunch is available from Monday to Friday at View Restaurant in Peppers Noosa Resort and Villas, 33a Viewland Drive, Noosa Heads. For reservations, phone 1300 987 600. ●

FOCUS ON … Body Art Festival

NEW CANVAS - THE HUMAN BODY The 2017 Australian Body Art Festival is taking place on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 April in the Noosa Hinterland town of Cooroy at Mill Place. With a competition theme this year of “Wonderland” it will provide an absolute wealth of inspiration for artists and a Wonderland of activity and fun for everyone! As Australia’s premier body art event, the festival is a colourful and creative experience for all ages, and offers a unique free weekend of activities. The event is renowned as ‘A Festival of Colour’ showcasing a variety of interesting art forms. As the event name suggests, the Australian Body Art Festival is centred on competitions in temporary body painting in the categories of brush and sponge, airbrush, special effects and face painting. For members of the public, it’s an event like nothing ever seen before, as human canvases take shape during the competitions. All types of artists participate including not just experienced body and make-up artists but graphic artists, visual artists and street artists - they simply use their artistic flair to work on a very different canvas ... the human body! And it’s not just body art competitions. The festival also hosts a Wearable Art Competition and parades with funky fashions made from recycled treasures. There are top class performers like The

Cherry Ripes and Let’s Dance Latin-Samba, drumming workshops by The Off Beat and quirky art installations. There will also be a wonderful selection of market stalls with artistic offerings on sale and some delectable food stalls. The festival will also include a free Saturday Soiree giving the opportunity to mix with artists, models and other festival goers with entertainment, coloured holi powder area and a licenced bar. Visit the website www.australianbodyart. com.au for more information or Facebook @AustralianBodyArtFestival. WEARABLE ART CATCHING ON BY HOLLIE HARRIS Wearable art is an exciting part of the Cooroy Body Art Festival featuring fashion creations which are made from recycled materials. Julie McCrae is a multi-award winning entrant to this competition, and says she is looking forward to catching up to all the other entrants. “We are a bit like a family who only get to see each other once a year,” Julie said. Julie has won twice and received the people’s choice award for her incredible entries. Running a busy blacksmith business, Julie tries to find the time to enter this

one competition every year. “The main reason I do this is to get ideas out of my head, and have that creative outlet outside of work projects,” she said. “All my pieces have a story that goes along with them, and I explain it to my husband, Luke, and he writes the stories for me. He has a way with words,” Julie said. So what has been the inspiration behind Julie’s entry into the Wearable Art competition this year? “It’s a surprise! But I can say that my entry has a personal twist this year,” she said. The Wearable art competition will be held on Sunday at 1pm, and is sure to wow audiences once again this year. ●

SMS RELIEF HELPING OUT NEW DADS SMS4dads is a world-first SMS program which combats mental health risks among new dads. Nothing compares to the joy of becoming a dad for the first time, but the transition to fatherhood is a high-risk period of mental distress for men. For many first-time dads, the sudden responsibility of caring for a new-born, expectations of providing financial support and the drastic change in lifestyle can take a toll. Research shows one in seven new dads experience a high level of psychological distress while adjusting to fatherhood and one in 10 first-time fathers develop postnatal depression. In 2015 beyondblue partnered with University of Newcastle and the Movember Foundation to create SMS4dads - a worldfirst, free Smartphone program dedicated to improving new dads’ mental health. Results of a national trial showed 92 per cent of participating dads found the service helpful. beyondblue hopes to see the service become an ongoing, national program and encourages fathers to register at sms4dads. com SMS4dads sends regular text messages to fathers offering uncomplicated information, advice and encouragement during the lifechanging experience. The service is synchronised with each baby’s development, so dads receive timely and relevant advice about supporting their partner during pregnancy and caring for their newborn. SMS4dads also provides an easy-to-use tool that tracks each father’s mood and

stress levels. Dads who are consistently stressed or feeling low receive additional support and a phone call offering information about services. SMS4dads project leader, University of Newcastle Associate Professor Richard Fletcher said the program worked because it was easy to access, private and provided practical solutions. “Many fathers believe their main role is to provide for their family, which can place extraordinary pressure on their shoulders. Often, their own mental health is the last

thing dads think about, Professor Fletcher said. “It can be hard to engage men, especially when it comes to mental health, but this approach, using the latest digital technology, is convenient and appeals to men, he said. beyondblue Project manager, Dr Luke Martin, said anxiety and depression were common in new dads and although it was treatable, men were among the most reluctant to seek help. “We need to find better ways to support new dads before they become distressed and

the results from the SMS4dads trial show that this approach works, Dr Martin said. “Having good mental health is vital for new dads because their health impacts their partner’s wellbeing and their baby’s development. Millions have been invested into providing mental health supports for new mums - and rightly so - but it’s also time we invested in supporting new dads, he said. SMS4dads is funded by beyondblue with donations from the Movember Foundation.

NASA and the soviet union first created these “vibration plate machines to help, restore and maintain health and fitness for astronauts whilst in space travels, due to massive physical challenges. They have been adapted in the last few decades for the health and fitness industry. Clint has a home-based clinic in Noosaville and also works at Physio Sync, sports physiotherapy in Lanyana Way, Noosa junction, as well as Skye Duncan’s Osteo clinic in the NAC, Sunshine Beach. Adding to his treatments, Clint has incorporated a multi-direction vibration plate to his business, similar to those used within the NRL for injury rehab, for improving muscle/soft tissue elasticity and/or strength/cardio workouts. Sessions can be combined with massage or based on a weekly regime, tailored to the individuals circumstances and fitness levels. A twenty minute session is equivalent to a one hour gym workout!

SOCIAL SCENE

EARTH HOUR MILESTONE MARKED To celebrate 10 years of Earth Hour, Eumundi held an Earth Hour Lantern Parade and Family Fun day last Sunday. Eumundi shone brightly, and the main lanterns were from LightnUp Lanterns who came all the way up from Lismore. A total of 120 students were supported to make lanterns through RADF funding with local artists in the lead-up to the event, and over 500 small lanterns were made on the day and powered by small LED candles. Crowds flanked the streets and enjoyed the joy and colour of the parade.

COMMUNITY UPDATES INSIGHTS INTO OUR INDUSTRY BY TOURISM NOOSA CEO DAMIEN MASSINGHAM This month Tourism Noosa will host the inaugural Tourism Summit where some of Australia’s most innovative thinkers and achievers from within the tourism industry will share their insights. Developed for our tourism members, the day is about bringing together industry leaders to interact and engage with delegates, providing industry with ideas, skills, insights and understanding to help businesses ride the wave of the fast-developing tourism environment while stimulating stronger tourism growth. Tourism is the second largest industry in Australia and Queensland, worth $118b to the Australian economy and nearly $20b to Queensland, and importantly it is the number one industry in Noosa, with visitors injecting over $900 million annually into our local economy, retaining and creating jobs. Continual improvements in the quality of our products and services is a vitally important challenge for everyone involved in the tourism industry to sustain and build the national, state and regional economies. The summit will assist in this challenge by bringing together some of Australia’s most innovative thinkers and achievers and provide ideas, skills and expert insights to help industry navigate the ever-evolving landscape of tourism and to determine how best to ride the next big wave. Speakers include Bernard Salt (KPMG and Futurist), Lisa Ronson (Tourism Australia), Dougal McKenzie (Google), Rob Pennicott (Pennicott Wilderness Adventures), Brett Godfrey (Entrepreneur), Lindsay Leeser (Accor), Rebecca King (Kingthing Marketing) and Sean Cummins (Cummins and Partners). The main themes will be: empowering product development and engaging marketing which dovetail into Tourism Noosa’s new Tourism Strategy 2017-2022 set to be launched at the Tourism Summit.

NPA FRIDAY FORUM Fungi are the “superheroes of our future” believes Dr Sandra Tuszynska who will be guest speaker at Noosa Parks Association’s Friday Environment Forum this week. Dr Tuszynska is a mycologist or fungal biologist with a passion for myco-restoration, the ability of fungi to restore damaged ecosystems. She aims to inspire her audience to think ‘fungi’ in all environmental restoration endeavours. Fungi are widely studied for their ability to remediate pollution by heavy metals, pesticides, radioactive isotopes, petrochemicals and other industrial toxins. Myco-remediation can therefore be applied to reclaim contaminated soils. Myco-filtration utilising fungal mats, can be used to prevent toxic runoff from industry and agriculture entering waterways and the ocean. There seems no limit to what fungi can do in the area of environmental restoration, some can even break down plastics. To learn more join the audience at the Environment Centre, 5 Wallace Drive, Noosaville. Coffee and a chat are available from 10am and the forum begins at 10.30am. To learn more about the birds of Wallace Park with the Interpretive Birding Group, meet Valda in the car park at 8.30am. All are welcome. Visit www.noosaparks.org. au for more information.

WIND UP ANGLERS AT RIVER With the wind up last weekend, the river was the place to be if you were looking for a feed of fish. Whiting were in good numbers around the Dog Beach, River Mouth, Frying Pan and Weyba Creek areas. Live yabbies, pealed prawns and worms were all popular baits. Small poppers or surface walkers have also been claiming some larger fish. Trevally and tailor are coming back onto the bite around the back of the Noosa Sound with the fish responding well to live baits and soft plastics. Upriver, the stretch from Tewantin up to Lake Cootharaba has been fishing well for school size jew, with those deeper sections of the river producing more fish. Good quality flathead have also come from the same area. Larger bream are also starting to move into the system as the water cools. Areas like Munna Point the sand bags at the end of the Dog Beach and Woods Bays have all fished well. Pilchards, prawns and fresh mullet have all been working well. With the water a little dirty after last week’s rains, the Jacks have been out in force, these fish traditionally hang around structure and feed on passing baitfish and prawns but with the cover of dirty water plenty of Jack have been about and feeding in more open waters. Mud and sand crabs have also been in good numbers in the Noosa River, with the mud crabs a little further upstream and the sand crabs more toward the mouth. Again loading those pots with fresh mullet has been the prime bait. Gympie Terrace was popular over the weekend with families enjoying the sunshine and the kids having a great time fishing for smaller whiting, bream and flathead. With the wind and swell up a little over last weekend, it was mainly the larger craft that headed out, most worked the closer reef like Sunshine Reef and jew schools. Sunshine Reef was again a standout with some good catches coming from the bottom including venus tusk fish, coral trout, slate bream, squire and sweetlip. Baits include live baits, pilchards, squid, and slab baits like mullet and bonito. Soft plastics and Micro jigs also got the job done. Pelagics were also plentiful with good quality long tail tuna on offer as well as both spotted and Spanish mackerel. Live baits and diving

Liam Fox with a nice parrot fish. trolling lures were the go on the mackerel, while the tuna were taking a liking to slugs and smaller stick baits. For those boats that did venture a little further North Reef, the hard and the banks were all fishing well with some larger fish on offer, pearl perch, dolphin fish, red emperor and cobia all boated. On the beach, it has been about getting out early before the wind comes up. There are some decent gutters around at the moment with plenty of sand scarfed out after recent storms. Bream have been in good numbers along most of the southern beaches, small flesh baits like mullet, pilchard and bonito have worked well. Whiting have been around the river mouths with the best time seeming to be two hours either side of the tide. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! ●

LIFE OF BRINE

PHIL JARRATT

John John Florence on an absolute bomb. Picture: WSL

LEFT OR RIGHT:

Owen Wright cops five square metres of Indian Ocean on the head. Picture: WSL

THE BIG QUESTION The last time I was in Margaret River it was a left, and the only boxes I heard about were available from the undertaker on the Bussell Highway. But that was a long time ago. These days the left-hander that breaks out in front of the Surfers Point car park (now beautifully sealed and landscaped) at Prevelly is pretty much ignored by the hotshots competing in the Drug Awareness Margaret River Pro in favour of the short, sharp, double-up right that tends to deposit you on dry reef after two or three quick slashes. Even that critical wave is regarded by the pros as second call only, once surfing The Box has been ruled out for insurance reasons. I watched some of the world’s best free-surfing The Box while the girls’ comp proceeded at Main Break, the first time I’d seen it in the flesh, so to speak. What a scary, mutant thing it is! I’m so glad that while we were surfing the left way back in the mists of time no one ever looked across the bay and suggested we paddle over and give it a go. But then I saw North Point, an even more mutant slab a dozen kilometres or so up the coast at Cowaramup Bay, where the World Surf League seemed absolutely committed to holding a round, almost regardless of conditions. Having been warned that there was no parking at North Point, and even less

standing room, the vantage points around the headland having been fenced off to protect the fragile coastal environment, we arrived at first light on the first morning and found a spot above the break where we watched three one-wave sets in half an hour devour free surfers on the dry ledge before a ranger chased us off. In the end we watched the round on a big screen from the comfort of the VIP lounge at Surfers Point, eating a gourmet lunch and sipping Margaret River sav blancs. Not quite what I’d hoped for, but on a day when not many waves were ridden, it was good to have the diversion of fine food and wine. Once the Pro got rolling at Main Break there was plenty to ooh and ah about, particularly when the swell jacked up, and reigning world champ John Florence began to unleash some of the most spectacular moves I’ve ever seen from someone in a contest jersey, pushed all the way by ratings leader and comeback king Owen Wright, Brazil’s Filipe Toledo and Adriano De Souza, and our own Julian Wilson, not to mention the great Kelly Slater, who looked very much on song for a 45-year-old until Big Saturday when, after only a quarter century on tour, he got over-amped and gave a heat to young Jack Freestone. And speaking of Kelly, it was good to catch up with old mates including caddy to the stars Stephen Bell (sometimes known

1968 Daimler 250 V8

KIDS PLAY FREE SUNDAY AFTERNOONS.

as Belly Slater) - who is now charged with looking after the oldest (Kelly) and youngest (Leo Fiovoranti) surfers on tour - as well as WSL commentator and former world champ Martin Potter, and behind the scenes heavyweights Renato Hickel and Steve Robertson, who have been with the world tour since it was invented, maybe longer. Around the VIP bar, there was a lot of chatter about whether Margarets will be a world tour event next year. The WSL honchos seem to think that the tour is unbalanced with three events in Australia but only two each in Europe and the USA. The event does have its problems, although I don’t think money is one of them - the WA tourism and development authorities throw a fortune at it - but now that I’ve rediscovered it, I hope they keep it on to give me an excuse to go back. One place I won’t be hurrying back to is the inland centre of Pemberton, surrounded by Karri forests and vineyards. It was a place I remembered fondly from 30 years ago, but I really can’t remember why. Anyway, a word of advice: don’t go there on a Monday because it’s closed. I’d booked a quaint-looking motel whose restaurant had several rave reviews online, but on checking in we were told it was closed Mondays. “But your website says it’s open seven nights.”

Me, I’d still go left. Picture: JJ

“Ah yes, we’ve been meaning to change that.” “And is the heated pool heated?” “Not exactly.” Never mind. The afternoon was young. We left Basil Fawlty to his daytime television and drove out to the surrounding wineries for a few cellar door tasting sessions. Wrong. After four “Closed Monday” signs and two locked gates with no explanation, we gave up and retired to the pub, where the bar girl was friendly, the beer was cold and the poached trout on the counter tea menu proved to be Pemberton’s one saving grace. ●

MOTHER NATURE’S TURBULENCE That great organisation that cares for Special Needs Children, the Noosa Seahorse Nippers, is once again finalising their program for their forthcoming season. For this season, the dates and time are as follows; the 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th of April, 8am-9am at Main Beach Noosa. Bronze and Surf Rescue Certificate holders are invited to assist in running the program. This organisation has been running for five years. The improvement amongst some of the Seahorse Nippers has been so good and it has enabled children to progress to mainstream Nippers, and also attend their first carnival. To know that some of these children have achieved what many would have deemed impossible, and that is to attend a surf carnival, has made the time, effort, travel and cost all worthwhile. Now the concept has been introduced into the Bundaberg district, and happy to relate it was a huge success. To Steve and Nikki Mawby, the founding members, “you’re blood is worth bottling.” Anyone interested in helping can contact Nikki on 0424 206 489 or mawbys@ bigpond.net.au To say that our National Titles were turbulent would be a gross under-statement. To carnival organiser Andrew Buhk and his team - thanks for the effort. Facing a week of cyclonic weather, Sunshine and Noosa teams were at North Kirra, competing against the best Australia

Electra Outram, Courtney Bryant and Riley Dixon won bronze in the Under 17 board relay at the Aussie titles. had to offer. Unfortunately to some extent Mother Nature had a win, and a lot of major water events were cancelled. From a normal program of five days the program was reduced to just two; leaving the carnival with only a 54 per cent completion of events.

This would have to be the first time in our history that we have experienced such an occurrence. Despite fielding a small team, Sunshine achieved good results. In doing so, they have maintained their tradition as medal winners in the blue ribbon events of champion lifesaver

and patrol competition at national level. In the Under 15 section, Sophie Boulton (female category) and Flynn Ross (male category) won silver medals, and in the Under 17 patrol competition Freya Claire, Allice Tilleard, Tom Connor and Jonty Redwood won the bronze. The swim section saw Nick Sloman win the Under 19 surf race. This was a follow-up to his winning the Open 2km swim at the weekend. Overall tally - 27 competitors (Under 14 to Masters) medal count; two gold, five silver and five bronze. Noosa fielded a big team consisting of Masters and Opens. In the Masters, with the club contesting most events, the final count saw Noosa finish in fourth place on the competition ladder. Lillie Tindall and Lara Porter won gold in the Under 15 and Tom Webber and Maggie Glassock won silver in the Open Division. The Under 19 section saw Noosa win bronze and silver in the Under 17 section. In the swim section, to add to Kareena Lee’s gold in the 2km open, Jasper Outram won bronze in the Under 19 surf race and in the Under 17 division, Noosa took the bronze in the female board, ski relay and surf teams. Another outstanding performance for Noosa came in the board riding section. In a combined effort between the Masters and Opens, they won a total of eight medals - four gold, three silver and a bronze. ●

SURF’S UP

HOLLLIE HARRIS

TOO GOOD TO PASS UP ON THIS ONE After some days of massive winds and swells on the back of Tropical Cyclone Debbie, the waters have been a bit dicey. With a lot of overflowing sewerage stations, the advice has been to steer clear for a while. For those of us who just gotta do it and with south-easterlies ahead of us for days, conditions may be too good to pass up. We should see a small boost here today and into Friday morning with some inconsistent sets of up to 3ft at the outer points and open beaches. There will be smaller waves along the sheltered points. These local SE winds will continue to

generate a bit of trade swell through into the weekend which will provide some consistent little waves in those sheltered locations. We’ve got plenty of trade swell for southeast Queensland all weekend with a few bumpy 3ft to 4ft-plus sets at open beaches on Saturday. A tropical cyclone is developing to the south-east of Fiji later this week and remains slow moving in the South Pacific. It’s hard to predict what this one will bring but keep a close eye on this for swell potential next week. The waves are super buttery, especially around the river mouths, so if you’ve gotta do it, it’s hoped you get a few good ones! ●
