Pontiac power pours in Easter 2017 will be a special time in Warwick and Queensland for fans of the American Pontiac marque. The national Pontiac event is being held in Warwick once again this weekend after last being staged here in 2011. Hosted by the Queensland chapter of the Pontiac Car Club of Australia, more than 100 Pontiacs will be converging on Warwick from around the country and the event is estimated to be worth around $80,000 to the local economy. The Pontiac Nationals commenced in Australia in 1988, the bi-annual event being the largest regular gathering of the marque held outside the USA. Recent events were held in 2015 at Goulburn in NSW and in 2013 at Shepparton in Victoria. The 2017 event is also recognising the local history of Pontiacs that were sold new in Warwick from 1926 to the late 1940s. A very wide range of cars are participating, covering the full range of years that the brand was made. This includes famous Pontiacs like the Trans Am from the Smokey and the Bandit movie and KITT from TV’s Knight Rider. Another famous Pontiac, the Monkeemobile, will also feature. This Australian version, built by member Paul Adams, recently starred in the 50th Anniversary Monkees Tour of Australia. There will be the famous GTO, the first muscle car, with several examples from different years on display. Plenty of ’50s and ’60s classics will be seen, with fully polished chrome, as well as a good selection of vintage Pontiacs from the ’30s, cars of the same type that were sold new in Warwick. Pontiac models on display will include the Laurentian, Star Chief, Bonneville, Le Mans, Chieftain, Catalina and Parisienne, as well as large numbers of Firebirds and Trans Ams. The Pontiacs and Friends feature car show is being held in Victoria Park

More than 200 cars are expected from both Pontiac and other classic car marques, many of the latter from the local area. A Pontiac Parade will be held at Morgan Park Raceway on Easter Sunday at 10am, followed by the Pontiac Challenge driving events. Spectator admission is $10 per carload, gates opening at 9am to see the Pontiacs on display and in action on the track. The parade of 100 Pontiacs will be led by the Monkeemobile, KITT and Bandit, the first time this is known to have happened anywhere in the world. The Pontiac Nationals is one of a number of similar events being staged in Warwick in 2017. The event has also attracted worldwide attention, with three American Pontiac Club and Enthusiast magazines all publishing pre-
view articles and requesting features following Easter. For further information on the event see https://www.facebook. com/2017austpontiacnats/ About Pontiac Pontiacs are a part of the vibrant American car scene in Queensland, and although not the most common, still account for 730 registrations in Queensland at present. The Queensland Chapter of the club currently has 150 members, about 20 per cent of the registered Pontiac population. These are still growing numbers, with many classic cars being regularly imported from the USA. Pontiac was a brand within the General Motors empire, which produced its first cars in 1926. It was created to fill a gap in the GM range be-

tween Chevrolet and higher-priced Oldsmobile, while Oaklands, Buicks and Cadillacs were priced higher again. Pontiac continued to fulfil its original mandate until around 1955, when it took on a whole new image. Sensing the ‘baby boomer’ market in the not too distant future, it transformed itself into a modern, performance oriented division. Its strong support of many forms of motorsport, and roles in film and television, further enhanced this image. During this era, it developed many innovative products and won many accolades. Its role of General Motors’ excitement division continued right through to recent times. However, as a result of the US financial crisis, GM made the decision to end the Pontiac brand, the last sales being at the end of October 2010.

Holden had an agreement with General Motors to supply bodies for imported GM chassis. This continued to 1948 when Holden commenced making their own cars. American cars including Pontiacs were then imported in kit form and assembled right hand drive. In the early ’50s, about 350 Pontiacs were being imported annually. From 1958, Canadian versions of Pontiacs were imported, which were a different car from the US Pontiacs. These cars were sold through Holden dealers for the luxury sector of the market, this ceasing after 1968 when Holden commenced selling its own luxury cars. Holden involvement recommenced in 2004, when export of the Monaro coupe was made to the US market, as the new Pontiac GTO. More recently, the VE Commodore has been exported to the US as the Pontiac G8. A large proportion of Pontiacs currently registered in Queensland were privately imported from the US. Up to 1999, these all had to be converted to right hand drive to be registered. In more recent years, left hand drive cars can be registered, provided they are over 30 years old. This is now the most popular option, with very few classic cars being converted to right hand drive. The name PONTIAC comes from the Indian Chief Pontiac who was chief of the Ottawa tribe. Born around 1720 and becoming a chief in 1755, he organised a rebellion against the English rule. The rebellion involved practically every Indian tribe from Lake Superior to the Lower Mississippi. They captured eight of the 12 forts in the region. The rebellion was ultimately a failure, but Pontiac had earned the respect of the English, who signed a peace treaty with him at Oswego, New York in 1766. The Oakland plant, where Pontiacs were first built, was in the township of Pontiac, in Oakland County, Michigan.
Warwick man among two on race fixing charges tion by the Queensland Racing Crime Squad, the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission and the Crime and Corruption Commission, which began soon after the QRIC was formed last July, in the wake of the greyhound live baiting scandal. Detectives told Brisbane media last week they expected to lay more charges against other individuals and had alleged a “loose cartel” of drivers and trainers has been engaged in the “systemic" fixing of harness races in Queensland. Queensland Racing Integrity Com-
missioner Ross Barnett told the media race fixing was not occurring at every race meeting but was “more frequent than it is rare”. “There is what I’ll call a loose cartel of drivers and trainers who are involved in systemic race fixing," Mr Barnett said. “How that occurs depends from race to race. “They will get together and decide on driving tactics or who will win the race, how they will win it. “We are talking about more than one race.
“It’s not every race, not even every race meeting, but on the continuum of activity I’d have to say it’s more frequent than it is rare." Premises visited last week included properties at Limestone Ridges, Warwick, The Gap, Logan Village and Redcliffe. Detectives seized mobile phones, computers, documents and clothing. The items will now be forensically examined as part of the investigation. Queensland Police Media advised they were not authorised to release the names of the men charged.

Charges have been laid against two men in relation to the fixing of harness races in Queensland - including a 46-year-old Warwick man who was last week arrested and charged after a 10-month investigation by authorities. The Warwick man, who cannot be named prior to his court appearance, was charged with one count of match fixing on Thursday 6 April, after police raided five properties across the southeast. If convicted the man faces a maximum of 10 years behind bars. He is
due to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates' Court on Wednesday 10 May. A second man, a 27 year old from Limestone Ridges, east of Warrill View in the Ipswich area, was charged on Friday 7 April with four counts of match fixing. He is due to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates' Court on Thursday 11 May. The licences of both men have been suspended by the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission until their matters are dealt with by the courts. The charges follow an investiga-

History in cottage
In brief
Casey’s tips
There’s plenty happening at Warwick’s Pringle Cottage Museum complex during the Heritage Festival from Friday 21 to Sunday 30 April. As you enter the museum grounds and stroll through the heritage rose garden, you immediately sense the history that surrounds you. Showcasing the proud heritage of Warwick and District’s development from the pioneering forefathers, step back in time and wander through history where time stands still. The museum offers seven buildings housed with unique individual collections to experience. Taking pride of place is the sandstone Pringle Cottage erected about 1870 by Scottish stonemason John McCulloch. A feature at the entrance to the cottage is the stained glass windows which were in the original R.S.L. rooms in King Street.
Seven buildings make up the Pringle Cottage museum complex. These windows feature the torch and the rising sun symbols. Each window was dedicated to the fallen in WWI and a brass plaque re-
cords the name. During Heritage Week, the museum complex will be open every day from 10am to 3pm, and will be
showcasing the history of the wool industry ‘On the Sheeps Back’. In this display in Eastwell Hall, there will be a large collection of shearing memorabilia and supplies, raw fleeces to view and feel, historical photos, woollen garments as well as many other items relating to the wool industry. On Saturday 22 April, the museum will have special displays of sheep shearing and commentary, butter making, whip making, static machinery displays and spinners and weavers to name a few. A slideshow of historical photos will be on show throughout the festival and light refreshments and saleable items will also be available during the 10 festival days. Entry will be $5 for adults, with children under 14 free. These prices apply for the duration of the festival. The museum is situated at 79-83 Dragon Street, and further information can be obtained by phoning 4661 3234 or 0429 941 073.
Festive heritage showcased The Southern Downs Heritage Festival 2017 is ready to go, with this year’s festival running from Friday 21 to Sunday 30 April. Festival co-ordinator Janice Flood delivered the program of events flyers for this year’s festival to the Warwick Visitor Centre and they were received by volunteer Fran Hockings. The flyers will be available from the Warwick and Stanthorpe visitor centres for collection.
The Southern Downs Heritage Festival was successful in receiving a ‘Fast Response Grant’ from the Southern Downs Regional Council‘s community grants funds to enable them to have the program of events printed. This was done by Creed and Lang. There are nearly 40 events covering the 10 days of the festival and 25 community groups and four businesses are taking part. Some events are free, and there is something of interest
for all age groups. The events cover the whole Southern Downs region. Pick up your program from your local visitor centre and plan your 10 days and take in as many of the events so thoughtfully planned for the Scenic Historic Southern Downs Region. More information available at www.facebook.com/ HeritageFest/ or contact Janice southerndownsheritagefestival@gmail.com
Roundabout for safety A roundabout costing $5.4million will be built at the southern intersection of the New England Highway and Stanthorpe Connection Road to improve safety. Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey said he recognised the importance of improving safety due to the location’s crash history. Design on the new roundabout will start soon, with continued community consultation and construction expected to begin early next year.
Easter waste collection During the Easter period, Southern Downs Regional Council waste collection services and waste facilities will operate as normal with a few exceptions. Council’s Environmental Services manager Tim O’Brien said the Yangan and Allora Waste Transfer stations will be closed on Good Friday 14 April, and will both reopen on Saturday,15 April for normal operating hours, starting at 8am. For further information, contact council on 1300 MY SDRC (1300 697 372) or visit council’s website www.sdrc.qld.gov.au/ living-here/waste-recycling
NAPfix back on shelves Sheep producers are invited to a re-launch of the NAPfix combination oral sheep drench which is making a return to the market. Pursehouse Rural and Jurox Animal Health will be re-launching Napfix at the first sheep sale after Easter - on Wednesday 19 April - at the Warwick Municipal Saleyards, commencing at 1pm.
Correction, clarification
Warwick Visitor Information Centre volunteer Fran Hockings, left, receives Heritage Festival flyers form festival coordinator Janice Flood.
A story in last week’s Free Times on tourism quoted Granite Belt operator Eric McCulloch in relation to Granite Belt Wine Tourism. We’d like to clarify that Mr McCulloch’s comments related to the period in which GBWT was funded by the Southern Downs Regional Council. Also last week, we referred a bridge damaged in the floods in Warwick as the ‘Lyndhurst Lane Bridge’. The bridge is correctly known as ‘The Charlie Fraser Bridge’. Our apologies for the oversight.

Rates up 3.4pc in budget By Jeremy Sollars The Southern Downs Regional Council adopted its draft 2017/18 budget last week at a closed meeting at the Stanthorpe council chambers. A 28-day public consultation period began last Monday 10 April, and a series of information sessions will be held across the region. Mayor Tracy Dobie said placing the budget on exhibition, holding information sessions and requesting feedback from residents before the final budget is adopted was “a great way for the community to take ownership of the budget”. “All councillors have worked closely with staff in the development of the draft budget this year and we now look forward to hearing feedback from the community,” Cr Dobie said. “While everyone within the council team has been urged to carefully review spending, the need to provide the appropriate level of services expected by the community has also been considered.” Cr Dobie said the draft budget was “consistent with the Long Term Financial Forecast” with a 3.4 per cent rise across the general rate and the utility charges for water, wastewater and waste collection and recycling. “The good news is that the draft budget forecasts a moderate operating surplus of $399,000 as well as a further reduction of the council’s debt by around $1.9 million to $2 million,” Cr Dobie said. “The council has already made significant in-roads into reducing our debt levels and securing our financial future with the early retirement of $2.34 million in loans this financial year. “This means that as council repays its debt and repayments decrease,
greater funds will be available for future council projects and will give the council a higher level of financial flexibility,” she said. The budget outlines a $22.9 million capital works program including: Black Spot funded road initiatives, $300,000. Forest Plains Road pavement repairs, $350,000. Rehabilitation - Goomburra Road, $500,000 and Harslett Road, $300,000. Road resealing and re-sheeting of gravel roads, $3.2 million. Stanthorpe Aerodrome runway reseal, $700,000. Stanthorpe Wastewater Treatment Plant, $185,000. Sycamore Street reconstruction, $450,000. Warwick Aerodrome Taxiway Realignment, $700,000. Warwick Water Treatment Plant upgrade - clarifier, stage two, $900,000. Warwick Effluent Reuse - stage two, $2.21 million. Water trunk main construction, Storm King Dam to Stanthorpe Water Treatment Plant, $3.27 million. Widening - Amiens Road, $1 million, and Inverramsey Road, $1.2 million. Cr Dobie said the council intended to include representatives from Queensland Fire and Emergency Services in the information sessions, to address in more detail changes to the way the Emergency Management Levy was applied to properties in the Southern Downs. The draft budget is available for viewing on the council’s website - www.sdrc.qld.gov.au - which includes the Capital Works program, Long Term Financial Plan, Fees and

Two key items appear to have missed the cut for the draft council budget for 2017/18. One is a funding allocation for the replacement of shelter sheds at the Swanfels Pioneer Memorial Park. The original sheds were demolished by the council in February on the grounds they were infested with termites, which has been disputed by locals. The council undertook a survey to gauge public opinion on the best form of replacement of the sheds and also placed a traffic counter at the park entrance. The survey closed on Friday 31 March. Also missing from the draft budget is a proposed new pest management fee to have been targeted at landowners the Southern Downs Regional Council deemed had failed to control pest animals and plants on their properties. Landowners across the Southern Downs and Granite Belt with more than five hectares were potentially to be slugged with a minimum $500 fee next financial year if they failed to comply with the council’s pest management requirements. Councillors at a special meeting in Warwick in late February voted in favour of adopting the new ‘Invasive Pest Control Scheme Policy’ which a report by officers said was aimed at “incentivising and increasing voluntary compliance with invasive pest control requirements”. The scheme had been estimated to net more than $1.1 million in revenue each financial year for the council, depending on the extent of compliance by landowners.

It leeches into the water hence more cancers, anything substantial growing in the soil is better than nothing or just plain grass. It is the trees that absorb excess moisture stopping the salt at substrata from diluting and rising to the surface. We have knowledgeable people - eg Barry Bowden and Brett Tunstill (Stanthorpe Wildlife Corridors). We have brought about imbalance in nature, now we have to try to bring a natural balance. A Bitvank, Warwick.
Driven to despair SDRC - Our land values are down and is it really worth paying $3000 plus for rates in Killarney when their third-world country back road or streets have no gutters (proper gutters) to channel these volumes of water, and flooding our businesses and yards? No! We are moving! Donna Nevin, Killarney.
It is with much pleasure that this writer informs victims of Justice Examinations Orders Queensland, and I know there were many, that such Orders will never again see the light of day! Mr Lawrence Springborg was the Queensland Health Minister who set up the review into the ALP’s Mental Health Act 2000 and although it cost well over a million dollars it was to prove to be money very well spent. Although placed into Parliament in November, the following January saw the current Labor Government elected, and it took until March 5, 2017, for the new Mental Health Act 2016 to finally become law. As found by the Newman Government, Justice Examination Orders issued by Justices of the Peace were to be made obsolete and replaced by Examination Authorities made by the Mental Health Review Tribunal (MHRT). What an unending nightmare has been the price paid by the victims of J.E.O.s! As this writer looks back over several years of research into the Mental Health Act 2000, that allows perfectly well citizens to be forced from their home under police guard for a mental health assessment, is to never again believe that governments, who claim that one in five Australians have mental health problems, do not have at least one in two sufferers writing the laws! Sincere thanks to the Southern Free Times
who from the beginning of this writer’s war on J.E.O.s from the 15/8/2007 to this day, and to Channel 7 who on July 11, 2008, filmed Today Tonight at my home. They called it a crazy law way back then, but the Labor Government left it in place until March 5, 2017! Melba Morris, Allora.
Thumbs Up Thumbs Down Thumbs Up To the council for the flowers in the main street - they are looking terrific.
Thumbs Down To the person slashing the grass in Australiana Park on Friday 7 April. Instead of joyriding around the toilets and playground area clocking up hours on the slasher why don’t you try putting the blades down on it and cut the grass like I’m sure you were supposed to be doing.

STACEY Bloomfield recalls his days as an apprentice plumber more than 30 years ago with R&P Shulz at Killarney with a laugh. “We used to do everything to do with water - even windmills,” Stacey says. “I don’t fix too many windmills these days but I do a lot of pumps and a lot of the old school sort of jobs, like roof and gutter repairs.” These days Stacey, a sole operator, trades under the name of SB Plumbing and Civil. He’s based at Killarney but travels all over
the countryside attending to the plumbing and other needs and requirements of both domestic and rural customers, including across the border into New South Wales. As well as plumbing, draining and gas fitting repairs and installation, Stacey’s abilities extend to maintenance and new works and he has an excavator, bobcat and hydro-vacuum excavation gear at his disposal. Rainwater tank installation and maintenance are another speciality. For all your requirements call Stacey Bloomfield on 0429 700 934.

★★★★★★★★
Casey’s tips
★★★★★★★★ ARIES—March 21-April 20 You are in an affectionate mood, ready to write a poem to the love of your life. Relatives are starting to pry and it may be wise to keep your distance. TAURUS—April 21-May 22 Set your sights on a distant goal and move steadily forward - it’s closer than you may think. In matters of romance and finance, avoid making any snap decisions. GEMINI—May 23-June 21 At last someone is ready to react favourably to your offbeat schemes. Financial gains are small but steady. In personal dealings, subtle moves won’t get the point across. CANCER—June 22-July 22 The week finds you unexpectedly sensitive, perhaps misinterpreting the motives of your well meaning loved ones. This is a good week for replacing those old clothes with new. LEO—July 23-August 22 People you associate with are actually more interesting than you initially believe - give them time to prove themselves. Projects may be postponed at the last moment. VIRGO—August 23-September 22 Being alert to changing trends can give you the edge at your place of work. Domestic differences are beginning to end. Your intuition is strongest from Friday. LIBRA—September 23-October 22 This week sees you boosting the morale of others and generally staying in the background. Your creative spirit is lively and you may decide to polish up some old artistic skills. SCORPIO—October 23-November 21 The week includes an interesting combination of good luck and long hours at work. A friendship could benefit from a lighter touch. A family problem may benefit from a cooling-off period. SAGITTARIUS—November 22-December 22 This will be a rapid paced week as you move from event to event, from project to project, with breathtaking speed. A warning: Financial papers require meticulous attention. CAPRICORN—December 23-January 20 Expect some fireworks over situations involving shared tasks and expenses. A romantic situation benefits from a more realistic approach. At work, creativity is the key. AQUARIUS—January 21-February 19 Interrupted projects are back on the drawing board. The weekend focuses on new faces and new places. The object of your affections shows a surprising sentimental side. PISCES—February 20-March 20 If you can, take on whole jobs rather than individual segments. Associates may be cynical, but don’t try to beat them at their own game. Pets appear in the weekend picture. BIRTHDAY THIS WEEK Yo u a r e m o d e s t , r e s e r v e d , e a r t h y, p e a c e - l o v i n g , intellectual and quick witted - that’s you. Tidiness is all important and sometimes your pickiness interferes with relationships. Flexibility is the keyword over the next eight months, in friendship and at the work place.
While driving down Percy Street recently I saw an amazing sight. I was so taken I turned around, went back and, with the owner’s permission, took a photo. It was a beautiful, neatly clipped, blue Plumbago hedge in full flower. This is an old fashioned favourite that is easy to grow and deserves a spot in a garden if you have the room. I have enjoyed seeing white varieties and various shades of blue as I have been about in town. Now that I’ve done a little research, it seems it is an ideal plant for many situations. It is native to Southern America, South Africa and Southern Asia. It can be grown as a shrub, a climber, espaliered against a wall or, as in the Percy Street situation, a wonderful clipped hedge. It can be grown in poor soil, on a sloping bank, in full sun or part shade and is drought tolerant once established. It doesn’t need pruning but if you clip off the spent flowers or give it a light trim, it will flower prolifically again on new growth. It has very few, if any, pests and diseases. It flowers from about November but its peak flowering time is February/March. It comes in various shades from white through pale blue to a dark blue which looks spectacular. It can be propagated from cuttings in summer or by seed. At this time of the year Michaelmas Daisies - or Easter Daisies as they are known in the southern hemisphere - are an appropriate flower to think about. They are also an old-fashioned favourite that is rarely seen these days
Garden Time with Beatrice Hawkins which is a shame. They are a many branched perennial with masses of small daisy flowers in colours from white through lilac to blue, pink, purple and deep purple/ red. They like full sun to part shade in a rich soil that is water retentive. They die down in the winter and this is the time to cut them right back to almost ground level and when they start to shoot again in spring, mulch them with well rotted manure or compost that has added nutrients. Divide the clumps every two or three years as over-crowding will cause them to produce less flowers. They were introduced to Britain from North America in 1710 and bloomed there around the time of St Michael’s Day in September, so that is how they got their common name, but bloom around Easter here, hence Easter Daisies. They come in tall growing varieties best planted at the back of a garden bed and now in a dwarf form that doesn’t require staking. Another thing I’d like to have in a garden. Hence I am once again enlarging a flower bed! Now for some trivia: ■ The daisy got its name because of its yellow centre.. the “day’s eye” because of its likeness to the sun. ■ Scientists tell us that there are over 270,000 species of flowers that have been documented and are ex-
isting in the 21st century. ■ The foxglove was named in the mistaken belief that foxes used them as gloves to deaden their footsteps when hunting. ■ The spice saffron comes from a certain type of crocus flower. Each bulb will only produce one flower and each flower only produces three red stigmas that are the highly prized and expensive, saffron threads. ■ Hairgrass and pearlwort are
plants that grow in Antarctica. ■ The rose was adopted as the national flower of England at the time of the War of the Roses (1455-1485) between the House of Lancaster (red rose) and the House of York (white rose). Don’t forget the Queensland Garden Expo in Nambour and the Horticultural Society’s bus trip on 8 July. Be assured of a fun and informative day out.

Tragedy mars Winx win The
spin With Casey O’Connor email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com
The racing public was treated to another delight when wonder mare Winx reigned supreme over her subjects in Saturday’s Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Another truly remarkable performance. Spare a thought for Hartnell who must be getting sick of counting the dapples on the mighty mare’s rump as she looms up and leaves him in her wake. For all the joy and excitement of Winx’s win on Saturday, we were reminded of the harsh realities of horse racing shortly after. The very next event at Randwick, the Sydney Cup was declared a no race after two gallopers fell going out of the straight the first time. Racegoers gasped as Almonquith and favourite of many, Who Shot the Barman and their riders hit the turf. Sadly Almonquith had suffered a broken leg and was euthanised. Both jockeys escaped serious injury as did the popular Who Shot the Barman. While this was unfolding at Randwick, there was far more tragic news emerging from Warialda. The club was hosting its only meeting for the year when the unthinkable happened. In the third race, popular Tamworth hoop Darren Jones was involved in a three-horse fall and lost his life. Also injured in the fall were fellow riders Leanne Henry Melanie Bolwell who is in a very serious condition in the Gold Coast hospital. Compounding the dreadful event was the news that two popular Toowoomba track work riders were seriously injured in a fall during track work on Saturday morning prior to the Weetwood Toowoomba Cup meeting. Both riders have suffered spinal injuries. Winx gave us all such pleasure with her win - but the subsequent events and tragic news bring home to all who enjoy racing the enormity and danger of the job of jockeys in a sport which our country loves. This Easter spare a special thought for the family of Darren Jones who is being remembered as “a typical battler from the bush“ who did good things in his sport and was a decent bloke. Also our thoughts should be with the families of the other injured riders. We hope they make good recoveries. Please everyone stay safe if you are travelling this Easter. I hope the Easter bunny is good to you all. - Casey NRL TIPPING JUST GETS TOUGHER Just when you thought the NRL teams were playing to form, the competition was again tipped upside down last weekend when the bottom-placed Tigers upset the front runner, the Cowboys. If that was not bad enough, Cowboys and Maroons supporters held their collective breaths when Johnathan Thurston was assisted from the field late in that game with what looked to be a nasty leg injury. There was also a collective sigh of relief when Paul Green announced JT’s injury would only keep him out of the game for a couple of weeks. The star looks likely to miss the Anzac Day Test but will be back on deck for club duty in a couple of weeks and should be on board to harass the Blues again this Origin series. Round six proved how hard it is just getting tougher to find winners in this competition and games played in torrential rain do not help. This week I am looking for the Bunnies to continue their winning performance, after all how can you tip against the Bunnies at Easter. The Roosters will not have things all their own way against the Knights, but should get the eggs. The Titans cannot take a trick with a high and ever growing injury list that must be giving their coach nightmares. They will however be out to bring down big brother on Friday night, but I think it will be the Broncos enjoying a Good Friday win.
The Sea Eagles were disappointing against the Dragons last week, and they have a tough task against the Storm were defeated for the first time this season in their premiership rematch. I think Bellamy’s boys despite a couple of key outs will make amends on Saturday at Brookvale. The Warriors are reaping the rewards of having Kieran Foran on the park putting together back-to-back wins. They face a tough road trip to GIO stadium this round to play the Raiders. Canberra too strong at home. The Dragons have silenced all critics and sit at the top of the table which has even their fans scratching their heads. Against the Cowboys without JT this week, I think they will once again show some magic and get the chocolates. The premiers fresh from their first win at AAMI take on the Panthers at Pepper Stadium. The Panthers welcome back their captain and his cohorts stood down last game and should be keen to bank a win for their supporters after their misdemeanours. Might upset the Sharks here. In a rare Monday game, this season the round wraps up with the Eels and Tigers going head to head at ANZ. The eels have been woeful recently while the Tigers showed what they are capable of in Townsville last round. Despite their poor showing recently, I am going to give the eels one more chance.
of 68 to claim a two-shot win. Wes Smith who has been in good form recently had another good round to secure the runner-up prize. The ladies event was a close contest with two players returning nett 78 for the day. Nikki Waterworth went on to win after the countback, relegating visiting player, Wendy O’Connell from Wantima G.C. to the runners-up spot. In the men’s event Pin shots were won by David Reeves at three, Matt Waterworth at 12 and John Spiller at 17. Alan Accurate collected the balls for his pro-pin at 1/10, but missed out on a pin shot and was beaten by his relative, More Accurate. Matt Waterworth held 5/14 and Brendon Barker collected 9/18 and the Birdies nest was shared by Wes Smith and Brendon Barker. The Ladies’ pin shots were claimed by Nikki Waterworth at three, Neta Thouard at 12 and Wendy O’Connell at 17. Run downs went to nett 72 for the men and nett 79 for the ladies. This week club member Simon Shannon is sponsoring Saturday’s single stableford. There is a time sheet on the board at the clubhouse and tee off is from 11.30 am.
Downs and got a taste of the diversity terrain in the district. The training courses were held in a variety of locations from the Warwick to the Granite Belt. Among those who attended the camp were several junior members of the local club, the Bullecourt Bounders. Club spokesperson Ms Liz Bourne speaking after the event said it had been a great success with the younger brigade really enjoying the experience. “The group showed plenty of enthusiasm for the sport and had fun,” Ms Bourne said. Experience ranged from kids who have only recently taken up the sport to some who have been competing for several years. Many of those attending the camp will be competing in the upcoming State School Orienteering Championships in July. Simeon Burrill one of the most successful young Orienteers in the district travelled to New Zealand with his parent Phil and Marion Burrill recently. All three will compete in the Oceania Orienteering Championships. The Championships which will be held in Auckland are a threeday Ester Event.
Twenty-five future Orienteering champs enjoyed a three-day camp on the Southern Downs.
Teenager Remy Leonard is doing his best to put Woodenbong on the world stage with his archery performances. PUTTING WOODENBONG ON THE MAP Teenager Remy Leonard is certainly doing his best to put his tiny home town of Woodenbong on the world map. The teenage archery whizz recently returned from the Vegas Shoot. It is one of the biggest shoots on the world archery calendar with around 3500 competitors vying for a combined prize pool of $400,000. Leonard travelled to Atlanta to spend time with his coach, George Ryals IV, and had the opportunity to compete in the weekly league shoot where almost straight off the plane he shot 300 and finished fourth. He then travelled with the Hornets, a talented group of young archers to compete in Las Vegas. After day one, Leonard was in 15th position and by the completion of day three he finished 12th in a field of 62shooters from around the world in the Young Adult Championship division. Leonard’s recent results are causing people to sit up and take notice. Due to his Australian ranking, he has been invited by Archery Australia to shoot at one World Cup in Turkey and a second in Salt Lake City in June. He has declined to attend the event in Turkey, but his family is hoping to get the talented youngster to the shoot in Salt Lake City. The Woodenbong Progress Association is helping with fund-raising. The Leonard family will be manning the barbecue at the Woodenbong trail bike ride on 14 and 15 May. Of course, any financial support for this young man will be appreciated. In the coming weeks, Remy and sister, Tabitha, will compete at the National Youth Championships in Victoria. CLUB CAPTAIN SHOWS HOW It was Stanthorpe Golf Club captain Matt Waterworth who showed the way in Saturday’s stroke event sponsored by Michael Lane. In a round that saw plenty of top scores returned, Waterworth was on fire scoring 73 off the stick for a nett score
Competitors came from across the coutnry for the 2017 State Gallery Rifle Championships at Inglewood last weekend. STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS SUCCESS It was certainly a big weekend on the Inglewood Sporting Shooters range. The club hosted the 2017 State Gallery Rifle Championships and is happy to report things went off with a bang. The two-day event which drew competitors from across the country was won by the husband and wife team of Ashlea and Dave McCarthy. During the course of the event, at least three State records were broken. After the business of hosting the State Championships, members of the Inglewood SSAA are looking forward to a more relaxed weekend. On Saturday there will be the annual Easter Bunny Hunt. Pistol and rifle events get underway from 10am and visitors are most welcome to join the members. On Sunday - it will be all about muzzle loading firearms. DARLING DOWNS VETS HIT THE COURSE There was a good field out on the Stanthorpe course on Monday as the Darling Downs Vets were well supported by local players in the mixed Stableford. Local knowledge proved an asset with several of the local players featuring in the main prizes. Play was delayed to allow players to watch the final holes of the Augusta Masters and enjoy Sergio Garcia’s break through win. Perhaps winners Graham Tonkin and Christine Welstead drew inspiration from watching the thrilling play off. The pair scored 44 points to secure their win. Richard Reardon and Lyn Ludlow combined to take out runner-up spot with 41 points. Mike McAuliffe and Debbie Wilmot featured in the run down. Lyle Bryant and Richard Reardon picked up prizes for their pin shots. Thanks to all the volunteer workers on the day and to the local players and visitors who attended. MINI CYCLONES HIT THE DISTRICT Twenty-five budding Orienteers, the Mini Cyclones hit the Southern Downs last weekend for a training camp. The youngsters aged 10-14 attended the three-day camp on the Southern
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP DECIDED Members of the Wallangarra Golf club relished a weekend of fine weather and ideal golfing conditions as they played a single event to complete the fourth round of the Club Championships. Kevin Williams certainly enjoyed the conditions playing one of his best ever rounds to win the event by a hefty margin from runner-up Jamie Purcell. The Captain stakes was split between Peter Butler and Tony Murphy. Peter Williams played the shot of the day, on the third almost acing it to win nearest the pin. Tony Murphy was on target at the ninth. Jamie Purcell and Steve Hampstead claimed the approach shots on the second and 14th holes. With the final round of the Club Championships played, the winners of all grades were announced. Steve Hampstead won the A Grade Gross. The B Grade gross winner was Jamie Purcell and the C Grade gross winner John Green. The B Grade nett winner was Kevin Williams and C Grade nett winner Peter Williams. Great to see Scott Williams on the course, and he was in good form shooting a round of nett 69. Club members wish him all the best for his upcoming surgery and a speedy recovery. This week the club will be holding an Irish 4 Ball on Saturday. The event will be sponsored by John Green. If you haven’t arranged your partners yet, you’d best hurry. Looking forward to 22 April, the club has scheduled a single stroke event sponsored by Peter Williams. Anyone looking for a round of golf will always be made welcome by the members at the ‘Garra Golf Club.

Paul Armstrong, Paul Byrnes, Terry Burns and Jim MacPherson enjoying a good round at the Maureen Bates Memorial Golf Day. BIG FIELD FOR BATES MEMORIAL There was a great roll up for the annual Maureen Bates Memorial Day Golf Day on Sunday. Members of the Stanthorpe Golf club joined Sunday Sporters and visitors in a round of golf played in simply perfect Stanthorpe autumn conditions. Fresh from a successful season of cricket Sam Dowie partnered Steve McEvoy (better known in Football circles) to take the winner’s prize. Runners-up were Brisbane visitors David Schash and Andrew George. The run-downs went to Nikki and Matt Waterworth and Paul Byrnes and Paul Armstrong. Ian Anderson hit a sweet shot at 12 to claim the pin shot and John Walsh was on target at 17. The multi draw raffle, a tradition on the day was a great success. Special thanks to the Bates family for providing the trophies on the day. It was wonderful to see such a great turn out in memory of one Nancy Bates who was one of the great supporters of the Golf club. A reminder that there is no Sporters this Sunday - so regulars can enjoy a lazy day chasing the Easter Bunny. Sporters return on Sunday 23 April, but no need to set the alarm for an early start as this game is an afternoon tee off because of the Club Pennants game. Tee off is at noon. Footnote: Thanks to the crew who sent me off in a golf buggy last Sunday to take some pics around the back of the course. Of course, once I mastered the art of putting my foot on pedal as well as turning on the key to make the damm thing go, it was sooooo much easier than pushing it! Thanks for the driving lesson. Who said you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. MIXED RESULTS It was another weekend of mixed results for local footballers. Warwick travelled to Oakey racked up wins in all three divisions. The A Grade side was on fire keeping the Bears scoreless as they piled on 66 unanswered points. The back line played some great football allowing Brodie Quirk to score four tries
on the back of their great work. Good to see Mick Bloomfield back on the paddock after a lengthy lay off. Dylan Galloway was once again one of the best for the Cowboys. The Bears spilt plenty of ball in the early stages of the game allowing the Cowboys to get away to a 20-nil start after 20 minutes. With no ball in the first half of the game, the Bears were forced to do the bulk of the tackling, and it showed at the back end of the game. The Cowboys have had an up and down start to the 2017 season, but made the most of their opportunities in this game and did not give the home side a sniff. The A Grade win completed a hat-trick for the club, winning the Reserve Grade 16-8 and a close under-18 game 22-18. A GRADE: Warwick 66 (Brodie Quirk 5, Dan Watson 2, Josh O’Brien, Paul Cantwell, Mick Bloomfield tries Dan Watson 3 goals) defeated Oakey Nil. Great to catch the game live on radio with Terry Cook, Andrew O’Brien and others joined by George McVeigh on the commentary team of on FM 88.2. Great to have local footy back on the airwaves. Move over Continuous Call Commentary Team the local boys are coming to get you. The picture was not as rosy for Wattles who came up against a very committed Dalby side. The Diehards are proving one of the best defensive sides in the TRL this season, and kept their impressive record intact keeping their opponents scoreless. The half time score was 28-0 and despite a good effort in the second half the Warriors went down 64-0. Wattles had plenty of injuries and were down on personnel, but had no answers for the yet-to-be defeated Diehards. In a man of the match performance, Dalby’s Jason Waldrop scored a double and Dylan Taylor played himself into the Clydesdales rep side after a polished display. It capped off a dismal day for Warriors supporters after the Reserve grade went down 20-6 and the under-18s also suffered a 20-6 loss. A GRADE: Dalby 44 ( Jason Wardrop 2, Brent Hunt, Zac Morris, Chris Wilkes, Corey Blades, Daniel Harms tries Zac Morris 8 goals) defeated Wattles 0 (tries goals) TRL LADDER The TRL LADDER- A Grade: Pittsworth 8, Valleys 6, Dalby 6, Warwick 4, Highfields 4 Gatton 4, Wattles 4, Souths 2, Brothers 2, Oakey 0, Goondiwindi 0. 4, Highfields 4, Pittsworth 3, Gatton 2, Wattles 2. Brothers 1, Oakey 0. WARRIORS CALLUP BUT NO COWBOYS Despite a poor showing on the weekend, three Wattles players have been selected in the Toowoomba Clydesdales rep squad to play in the 47th Battalion Carnival in Yeppoon. Selected are fullback Jackson Green, half Matt Duggan and forward Dale Perkins in the squad. Selectors have given Duggan who has a knee injury as much time as possible to prove his fitness. Some Cowboys supporters were left scratching their heads after not one of their players was selected. Like many other teams, the 2016 Grand finalists have had some good and some ordinary performances in the early stages of the season. Paul Cantwell, one of the most consistent players in the league, must have been close to receiving a call up after taking on a more senior role in the team this season. CLUDESDALE TEAM: Corey Blades (Dalby), Jackson Green (Wattles), Alex Ambia (Dalby), Billy Jackwitz (Gatton), Steve Franciscious (Dalby), Dwayne Duncan (Souths), Dylan Taylor (Dalby), Jarrod Lee (Highfields), Matt Duggan (Wattles), James Dempsey (Pittsworth), Jason Wardrop (Dalby), Rahari Peeti (Highfields), Callum Skinner (Goondiwindi), Dale Perkins (Wattles), Cameron Millar (Pittsworth), Eli Wickham (Dalby), Braydon Gibbs (Pittsworth), Ronnie David (Goondiwindi), Ricky Davis (Brothers), Jayden Motley (Highfields) GOOD WINS FOR BUSHRANGERS It is ironic that on the very weekend when the BRL clubs met to discuss the future of the 2017 competition, their rep side notched up their first wins at the South West Trail games for several seasons. The Border Bushrangers stepped out in a brand new playing strip for their annual trial round robin event in Miles on Saturday and won both games. In their first encounter, they defeated the Western Ringers 24-18 in a close game. Jamie Meddings had a great game, scoring three tries. Jamie Watts also crossed for a try. Brent Hearne kicked three goals and Joey Fry one. In the second of their games, the Bushrangers met the more fancied Roma and District team and came away with what could be considered an upset 28-16 win. Roma has had the wood on the Bushrangers side in recent years and it was great to see the boys to get one back. Jamie Watts led the try scoring with a double while Brandon Sauverain, Josh Drennert and Jamie Meddings all scoring. Brent Hearne added four more conversions to take his tally for the day to seven. Meddings and Watts were named joint of the Player of the Trials.
It was not surprising that the Border Bushrangers were well represented when the 2017 south West Country team was announced. Players selected were Brent Hearne, Brent Osborne, Jamie Meddings, Jamie Watts, and Brett Watts. Ian Brown while Jake Charles was named as a shadow player. Tenterfield player Brandon Sauverin was selected in the South West under-20s team. The teams will prepare to play in the 47th battalion carnival at Yeppoon on 28 April. They will also be chasing another win in the Outback Carnival. This year Ilfracombe, the hometown of Cowboy’s enforcer Matt Scott will host the carnival on 17 June. DECISIONS MADE ON BRL SEASON While the Border Bushrangers tasted success in the representative arena, the clubs met on Sunday to discuss the future of the 2017 season. The Wallangarra Rams formally withdrew from the 2017 season at the meeting, unable to attract a full complement of players. The competition will proceed with four clubs last season’s premiers the Inglewood Roosters, the Killarney Cutters, Tenterfield Tigers and the Stanthorpe Gremlins. The Gremlins and Tigers are light on numbers but are confident they will have the numbers to be competitive on a week to week basis. The Border Rugby League Ladies League tag competition, one of the highlights of the competition over the past three seasons, will not go ahead in 2017 after three-time premiers, Tenterfield and Stanthorpe failed in their bid to attract players this season. In an unusual twist the Wallangarra Ramettes who have been improving each season had ample players. All clubs and the BRL officals are committed to hosting a good season of rugby league, and are calling on supporters to back the clubs as the season gets underway. A revised draw is expected to be released in the next few days. It is hoped that there can be some new initiatives to attract club supporters to the games including double headers.
Collis’s team. On Saturday two rounds of scrounger were played, with the following results: F. Gambrill 29, C. Lawler 52, J. Harslett 31, E. Diery 52, P. Dipplesman 76. The winner was P.
