Bunnies go hop, hop, hop! Endeavour Hills Library hopped into the Easter spirit for the school holidays. It hosted the Bunnies go hop, hop, hop! event for primary school kids on Wednesday 12 April. They sang Easter songs, learnt Easter stories and rhymes, and made an Easter basket to take home.

(the thieves) want the keys.” Despite headlines about violent car-jackings and home invasions, most car thefts remained opportunistic crimes, he said. Such as burglars finding car keys - maybe alongside a phone and wallet - on a table by the door.

and it’s one of the largest crime types Victoria Police responds to in the municipality. “Essentially the campaign focuses on spreading the word that car security begins at home.” Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill said most car-stealing home invaders were seeking car keys in plain sight because they didn’t want confrontation. Most modern cars were stolen using the keys found in stolen purses, handbags, homes or even left in car ignitions, Asst Comm Hill said. About a third of the state’s 70,000 annual thefts from vehicles occurred without forced entry, suggesting doors had been left unlocked, he said. In Victoria, about 22,000 cars are stolen annually. “Secure your car, secure your keys - and these crimes can be avoided,” Asst Comm Hill said. The three-month campaign will be promoted with information booths at major events and shopping centres and on the Casey Eye-Watch Facebook-page. It is partnered by City of Casey, Victoria Police, National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council and Berwick Motor Group.

Secure your keys. That’s a ‘key’ message from Operation Bounce Back - a Casey-wide awareness campaign to drive down the annual toll of hundreds of stolen cars and thefts from vehicles. The campaign’s simple tips are aimed to cut down opportunities for thieves, such as by not leaving keys on a side-table or hanging on a hook by the home door. Other tips are to lock unattended vehicles at all times, keep valuables in cars out of sight, and lock cars securely in garages at night. Ray Carroll, executive director of National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council, told a launch on 11 April that Victoria was in the grip of a major increase in vehicle crime. Mr Carroll said people had become complacent after a long period of decline between 2001’14. However, in areas targeted by Bounce Back, vehicle crime had reduced by up to 40 per cent, he said. The campaign sent a message not only to would-be victims, but also would-be thieves.
“They’re in and out, and the car disappears from the driveway.” The most common vehicle stolen was a 1990s Nissan Pulsar - well before the age of vehicle immobilisation, Mr Carroll said. The launch was held at Berwick Motor Group, which has installed $300,000 of security measures such as monitored, motion-sensing cameras after its outlets had been targeted by brazen thieves. Berwick Motor Group Executive Director Nick Strauss said there was two ways to look at the expense. It was either a cost to the bottom line or a cure of future pain. He estimated the boosted security had cut vehicle crime at his stores by about 90 per cent. He told of how thieves had driven through a showroom’s double-plate glass window to steal two vehicles in 2015. They stole a third car from the rear of the premises even while police were investigating on-site. Casey deputy mayor Damien Rosario said almost 1000 cars were stolen in Casey in 2015-16, with Berwick, Narre Warren and Cranbourne the hardest hit. “Unfortunately the City of Casey has one of the highest rates of motor vehicle theft in the state

Wanted on theft charges Police are appealing for help to find Stephen McCallum, who failed to answer bail over burglary, theft and weapons offences. The 31-year-old is known to frequent the Dandenong and Endeavour Hills areas. He described as 185cm tall with a medium build, blue eyes, brown hair and a pale Stephen McCallum. complexion. Call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic. com.au with any information about his whereabouts.
Man faces multiples charges A stolen truck led police to a haul of hot property in a Hampton Park home. The Greater Dandenong Frontline Tactical Unit executed a warrant at the house on Tuesday 4 April in relation to a burglary and theft of a Hino truck at a Dandenong South factory. Officers recovered the truck and allegedly found the vehicle’s handbook inside the house alongside tools, a Ducati motorcycle and two jet skis allegedly stolen in separate incidents. They charged a 33-year-old Hampton Park man with burglary, theft and handling stolen goods. He was remanded to appear in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Monday 1 May.
Orphan charity at a loss considered valid reasons to grant any extension as they were neither “rare” nor “exceptional”, and with just 30 days noticed they revoked our status, further increasing the stress and worry of our committee.” The Chance Foundation decided not to reapply for charitable status through the ACNC but will continue to operate. Ms Herauville said the ACNC has not worked in the best interest of charities it represents. “We feel that the ACNC have done us a major disservice with their impersonal attitude and lack of compassion, and that is what lies at the heart of charity work and philanthropy. “We no longer see our association with them as positive,” she said. “It’s bureaucracy at its most impersonal and we were dismissed without much consideration, so we chose, in turn, to dismiss them as an optional governing body for The Chance Foundation Inc.” Green Renters Inc the Afghan Women Welfare Foundation and the El Redentor Evangelical Church were contacted for comment but did not respond by the time the News went to press.
Spate of vehicle thefts Greater Dandenong motorists are falling victim to a spate of thefts from vehicles. There’d been about 15 reported thefts in the seven days to Tuesday 11 April, according to Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Sergeant Dean Hedge. He said the thefts occurred within various residential streets in Springvale, Noble Park and Keysborough. Det Sgt Hedge said the thieves were striking at night, and “the main method of entry is they’re smashing windows”. “Personal belongings are being left in cars,” he said. Thieves are making off with wallets, credit cards, phones, iPads and more. “It is school holidays. We tend to have a rise in instances like this,” he said. “We’re just asking people to be vigilant, take everything inside out of their cars. They think that because they’re parked in the driveway they’re safe.”
Six months for burglaries but ‘not beyond redemption’ By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man who pleaded guilty to breaking into staff lockers at a Fountain Gate business and stealing mobile phones has been jailed. Daniel Bogar, 37, had bent the locker doors open to steal two phones, an iPod and a wallet with a bank card and university student card about 6pm on 29 July, 2016, a court heard. The goods, valued at $1700, were not recovered upon Bogar’s arrest four months later. “I knew this was going to come back and bite me,” Bogar said during his “no-comment” police interview. Bogar had also pleaded guilty to stealing two laptops and a phone valued at $8500 from a closed mobile-phone stall at Waverley Gardens
Shopping Centre on 15 March. Bogar also pleaded guilty to driving suspended, and possessing a 50-centimetre wooden baton and a knife in his car in Beaconsfield in November. He told police that he’d found the baton in hard rubbish and was going to use it as a stand at home. In August, police found Bogar in a car in a Mulgrave reserve with a syringe cap in his hand and an ear bleeding due to a recent syringe injection. In the car was a quantity of ice and suspected stolen goods including two phones and a laptop. He was also charged with drug possession after found slumped behind a steering wheel in a Dandenong North street on 9 April.
Bogar’s lawyer told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 10 April that the accused had been struggling since released from jail in March 2016 - having been returned to custody for breaching parole. The unemployed methadone user had significant criminal history and had been on two previous drug treatment orders, the lawyer said. “He says he could do with some help.” Bogar underscored this in telling the court: “Every time I’m released from prison, I’m not getting any help.” Magistrate Barry Schultz, in jailing Bogar for six months followed by a corrections order, said “plainly no one is beyond redemption”. The corrections order would last 18 months.
Unlicenced drink-driver Police impounded an unlicensed driver’s car after allegedly catching him drink-driving in Endeavour Hills. Endeavour Hills police intercepted a silver Ford Focus travelling north on Bridgewater Boulevard about 9am on Saturday 8 April. They allege the driver returned a positive blood alcohol content reading of 0.164 and that he was unlicensed. Police impounded the 34-year-old Werribee man’s car for 30 days at a cost of $1038. He is expected to be charged on summons with drink driving and unlicensed driving.

The founder of a charity in Berwick that donates essential supplies to orphans overseas has slammed the national charity registrar after having their charity status revoked last month. Founder of the Chance Foundation Mandi Herauville said the revocation of the organisation’s charitable status came as a shock. “It was with a great deal of sadness and stress that our charity status was suddenly revoked,” she said. “It caused extremely high levels of stress for our founder and the committee, however there were exceptional circumstances which mitigated the completion of the reporting in the past 12 months.” The Chance Foundation was one of four Casey based charities among the 590 charities across Australia that had their status as a charitable organisation revoked. Green Renters Inc in Cranbourne East, the Afghan Women Welfare Foundation in Hampton Park and the El Redentor Evangelical Church in
Narre Warren also had their status as a charitable organisation revoked on Tuesday 28 March. The charities had their statuses revoked by the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) after failing to submit their annual reports two years running. “As the national charity regulator, it is important that we provide the Australian community with accurate and up-to-date information on the Charity Register,” ACNC Commissioner Susan Pascoe said. “This information is largely collected from the Annual Information Statements required from charities to meet their basic requirements to retain charitable status. “The organisations that have lost their charity status were warned multiple times to submit their outstanding reports.” Ms Herauville said she wrote to and called the ACNC many times to explain that the charity had experienced hardships recently that had hindered its ability to submit its annual information statement. “They (the ACNC) stated that these were not

Brave at heart: Pedro battles on By Casey Neill Pedro Kalimnakis is one in 93.6 million - that’s four times the population of Australia. The Noble Park toddler was born blind, autistic and with a possible intellectual disability. He could start to lose his hearing from his third birthday, in six months. These are all symptoms of Norrie disease. Pedro is one of 400 people in the world with the genetic condition. Only 20 per cent of sufferers have the same severity. “He used to scream for hours upon hours,” mum Radmila Kalimnakis said of Pedro as a newborn. He wasn’t meeting his milestones but doctors dismissed their concerns. When he was eight weeks old Radmila and husband Peter took Pedro to the emergency room and soon found themselves at the Royal Children’s Hospital. Glaucoma had been causing pressure in Pedro’s eyes - that’s why he’d been crying out in pain. Both his retinas were detached and he had no light perception or vision. “He used to sleep all day long. He didn’t know night or day,” Radmila said. A blood test later confirmed Norrie disease. “That was the worst, worst case scenario. That was the worst possible disease he could have,” she said. Radmila was devastated to learn that she carried the disease, which is in the X chromosome. “I had no idea,” she said. Women have two X chromosomes, so Radmila’s body overlooked the faulty X and used the healthy one. Men have one X and one Y chromosome, so Pedro’s body couldn’t ignore the faulty gene. Against the odds he started walking in January and with intensive applied behaviour analysis (ABA) therapy at not-for-profit Abacus Learning Centre in Hastings, his vocabulary is growing. “He’s gone from being completely non-verbal to now being able to request items,” Radmila said. “I was overjoyed.” He’s mastering new tasks, like placing a block

in a box, responding to the question ’what is your name?’ and transitioning between activities. Pedro’s autism makes him a fussy eater, so Radmila and Peter constantly struggle to boost his weight and keep him off a feeding tube. He was diagnosed as failure to thrive from an early age. He’s now learning to use a cane to increase his mobility. “We adore him,” Radmila said. “We’ll do whatever we can to make his life better.” That included reaching out to the Rotary clubs of Springvale and Noble Park. Large steps created a dangerous entry from
their home into their back yard. “We couldn’t afford to fix it,” Radmila said. “Pedro was getting more and more independent.” So the Rotarians paid for the materials to build a deck. “He can come outside and play here and we don’t have to worry about him,” Radmila said. “They’ve been incredibly supportive.” Pedro will soon start in the Monash Special Developmental School (SDS) early education program. Radmila and Peter introduce him to different environments and experiences and celebrate every step forward.
The swing is Pedro's favourite activity. 167072

Looking Back 100 years ago 19 April 1917 About People We regret to chronicle the death of Sergeant E A Orgill, who was killed in action on 23 March. Word was received on Saturday and the flag at the town hall was at half-mast on Sunday as a mark of respect for the deceased soldier, who was the son of Mrs Orgill, “Rutland”, Scott Street, Dandenong, and an old and highly respected member of the community. Mrs Orgill has two other sons serving with the colours. Deceased was a native of Dandenong, of good quality and extremely popular. Sergeant Orgill was wounded in France whilst serving with the artillery and was sent to England. Upon recovering from his wounds he again took his place in the firing line.
Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society We extend our deepest sympathy to the bereaved relatives.
50 years ago 25 April 1967 “You need help rather than punishment” These were the words of Mr D L Stott, SM, in a fatherly talk to a lonely and frustrated youth who appeared before him last week. The story unfolded before Mr Stott was that of a farmer’s son leaving the country town, his birthplace, where his mates lived. He came to the city as an apprentice electrical technician. This youth of 18 was shy in the presence of girls. He settled down in his job, a job where there were no girls. He secured board in a guest house where there were no girls. He was studious and worked hard, but he
was as completely cut off from feminine society as if he were in a monastery. Living in a cocoon of loneliness and shyness, this youth continued to sit amidst conveys of pretty girls in the train to and from work. Finally he succumbed to temptation to touch a girl. So it was that in the train between Kooyong and Jordanville, he touched the leg of a girl, and then he touched the leg of another girl. Inevitably he was caught by Railways Investigation Officers. Placing the youth on probation for 18 months, Mr Stott said “You must develop the ability to mix with girls in a proper social way.”
20 years ago 21 April 1997 Property high In Dandenong, house prices rose to a median of $103,500 in the three months to April, re-
versing a six-year trend. There have been marginal increases in the lower end of the market, particularly for properties under $70,000. The increases have been fuelled by low interest rates, but relatively high unemployment is holding the market back.
5 years ago 16 April 2012 Saigon Square to heat up polls The heated dispute over the naming of a plaza in Springvale is set to become a Greater Dandenong Council election issue. Saigon Square action group convener Trung Doan last week said: “Many of the Vietnamese community will be putting the ‘undemocratic’ council under political pressure in the lead-up to the elections”.

Eric Wilson was born in Carlton on 27 December 1930 and educated at the Oakleigh, Clayton and Dandenong West primary schools. He left school in 1943 aged 13 to support his widowed mother and worked as a casual labourer in the market gardens around Dandenong until he was almost 21. Eric worked in the Kraft factory for the following nine years before at age 30 moving to Bush Electric as a fitter and turner. He worked there for six years before moving to Safeway, where he was employed for nine years. In 1962 he met and married Jan. They moved to Dandenong and had a son, Craig, in 1968. Eric had a severe car accident in 1964, spending seven months in hospital. The experience led him and Jan to join the Australian Labor Party, where they worked to help initiate Medibank

Mrs Wilson migrated to Australia from Scotland in the early 1960s and in 1977 became the second woman to be elected to the City of Dandenong. She represented the North Ward until 1986, and in 1985 was elected the first Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the new seat of Dandenong North. Following her retirement from politics in 1999, Mrs Wilson was appointed to the board of Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) and shortly afterwards became chairwoman. In 2009, Mrs Wilson was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for services to the racing industry and to animal welfare. She died on 5 March 2010. A sea of red poppies will spill down the steps at the Pillars of Freedom in Dandenong this Anzac Day. Carole Bloomer and Leslie Whitiskie led a project to create the crocheted carpet. “It sort of started last year when we had volunteers get together down at the RSL,” Ms Bloomer said. “Somebody thought it might be a nice idea to make some poppies.” She later asked who was taking charge but nobody seemed to know. “I thought I’d better get on with it,” she said. The Saturday knitting group and Monday craft group at Willow Lodge in Bangholme made “a huge number”. Residents at Herbert Street Village in Dandenong made lots too,” she said.
Reflecting on fun with mirrors Casey kids had fun with mirrors and reflections this school holidays. Endeavour Hills Library hosted a kaleidoscope-making workshop on Monday 10 April. Participants learnt how to make their own kaleidoscope and how the tube creates beautiful patterns.

Ms Bloomer and Ms Whitiskie gathered them all up and attached them to old carpet bowl mat, creating 4 by 1 metre runners covered in poppies. “They look fantastic. Once they’re rolled out down the steps at the pillars, I think they’ll look mighty,” Ms Bloomer said. The poppies range in size from about 2cm up to 15cm. “Everybody had their own idea of what a poppy looked like,” Ms Bloomer said. “They’re all different shades of red. “A lot of people have put a lot of hard work into it.” One lady, Dot Heard, knitted 376 on her own over three or four months. “Her husband was a returned serviceman, he passed away last year,” Ms Bloomer said. “She enjoys being down at the RSL. “She wanted to give something back and she certainly has.”

EXPERIENCE DIFFERENT
Your pathway to a brighter future. Pooches and their families enjoyed live music, roving performers, workshops, games, circus play and more at Autumn Fest. The annual event at Keysborough’s Wachter Reserve featured dog activities, including a lure course, plus plenty of activities for kids and big kids alike. Cr Roz Blades told the 10 April Greater Dandenong Council meeting that it was “the best one yet”. The new Springvale Library received a $750,000 boost from the Living Libraries Infrastructure Program, Keysborough MP Martin Pakula announced on Monday 10 April. The building will have more than twice the floor space of the current library, and is expected to increase visits by 80 per cent. The new Springvale Library will be part of a broader $32 million City of Greater Dandenong project to transform the former council chambers site into a community hub. Greater Dandenong’s Living Treasures could soon be recognised with a permanent tribute. Councillors discussed a Living Treasures tribute wall at their 20 March briefing session and viewed a full-scale paper mock-up of the proposed wall in the intended location. Acting community services director Martin Fidler said the Living Treasures project started in 1998 as part of the city’s celebrations for the Centenary of Australian Federation. It continued until 2005 and recognised 33 residents who made a significant contribution to the community. Construction on new traffic lights at Princes Highway and Robinson Street in Dandenong will start mid-year and be finished late in the year. VicRoads said the works could include reduced speed limits and lane closures, but would remain open to all traffic during peak hours throughout the project. More than 35,000 vehicles pass through the intersection each day. It has a poor safety record with 12 recorded casualty crashes, including four serious injury crashes, in the five-year period, ending December 2015. Councillor Angela Long has been rattling tins for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday

Peta Rose was the first participant in Greater Dandenong Council’s new public question time. She was present at the Monday 10 April meeting, and was invited to read out two questions she’d submitted and receive the answers in-person. Ms Rose asked if the council could be doing more to let people know about activities and facilities in the municipality and about safety for children around Dandenong Creek and other waterways. Directors explained the plans and policies in place relating to both questions. Greater Dandenong groups will share in more than $9600 for shade protection. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams announced that Dandenong City Soccer Club and the Dandenong Agricultural and Pastoral Society would receive Community Shade Grants Program funding to improve shade in outdoor public spaces when they host soccer matches and community events. Ms Williams said shade formed the best defence against UV over-exposure when used with other sun protection measures including sunscreen and protective clothing. “Skin cancer is a major health issue for Victorians, yet it’s mostly preventable,” she said. “Spending time outdoors is part of a healthy lifestyle, and it is important shade is easily available where people come together.”

MEDICALLY SPEAKING
Premmies in safe hands On the eve of Wear Green for Premmies Day, St John of God Berwick Hospital welcomed a gorgeous little girl born at 36 weeks. Even though her parents may not have been ready for her unexpected entry into the world, the hospital was indeed well equipped for Indiana’s early arrival. Given that St John of God Berwick Hospital has a level two special care nursery on site with eight consultant paediatricians who work in rotation and are on call 24 hours a day, premature babies born from about 34 weeks onward and weighing 1700 grams can expect to be well cared for by the hospital’s qualified staff. Although premature birth remains a major source of getting some extra special attention from St John of God hospital staff, it’s not the only one. Babies who might be experiencing breathing difficulties, jaundice, low blood sugar levels or temperature instability could also require the expertise of the hospital’s highly trained medical professionals. Following the birth of a baby at St John of God Berwick Hospital, parents can be rest assured that they and their babies are in good hands- and soon enough they will be delivering in a state-of-theart maternity ward at the new Kangan Drive location in Berwick as well. With spacious, light-filled private rooms promoting calm, peace and wellbeing, expectant parents will be spoilt with large modern ensuite facilities and in-built accommodation for partners. A spa bath will also be available during and after delivery. And there will be a focus on access to fresh air and outdoor spaces with a large balcony area for new and expecting parents. If that isn’t enough, the daily happy hour with beverages and a variety of cakes, pastries, soft cheeses and biscuits will help support parents in those first few days. But it won’t be just the parents and babies who will be well cared for in the new location, St John

Dandenong Dermatology Centre has been providing dermatology care and laser therapy to the area for many years. The centre is headed by Dr Peter Fergin, Dr Olivia Milne and Dr Stephen Gilmore. The trio were recently joined by Dr Rebecca Nguyen. Laser treatments are provided by dermatology and cosmetic nurse Marie Lebrasse. Marie has many years of expertise with laser treatments and techniques. She regularly updates her laser knowledge and skills and adheres to all new standards and regulations. Dr Fergin says that with summer over, now is the perfect time to repair the freckles or pigmentation that appear on exposed skin on the face, chest and hands. “Photo rejuvenation is one of the newest therapies in laser, and gives great results with minimal down time. “Photo rejuvenation with radio frequency technologies applies small amounts of heat safely into the dermis leading to remodelling of collagen and elastin, which, in turn, leads to plumping of the skin. “The epidermis also tightens giving the treated skin a smoother, more youthful appearance.” Dandenong Dermatology Centre is at 1/110 David Street. BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST
Tram order trickles down By Casey Neill It’s not only Bombardier hoping for a new tram order in the May State Budget. Committee for Dandenong’s Jill Walsh said a new tram order would keep the Dandenong manufacturer going with a level of confidence to sustain and grow highly skilled jobs in the region. “It is vital for the tram extension and it needs to be a substantive number,” she said. “It needs to keep that site alive.” Ms Walsh is a partner at Actco-Pickering Metal Industries in Dandenong South, which is a major supplier of welded components for the trams. “We rely on that ongoing work to keep our skilled workforce engaged and to keep employing apprentices and so on,” she said. South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA) executive officer Adrian Boden said an order for more rolling stock from Bombardier would flow on to the manufacturer’s supply base. “If the work at Bombardier dries up, then the position of the supply base across the South-East would be critical,” he said. During a visit to Bombardier on 21 March, Premier Daniel Andrews said the final 20 E-Class trams in the State Government’s 70-tram order would be finished by the end of June next year. “There’s a State Budget in just a few weeks’ time, and if everyone is just patient, I know a really strong future for this business, a strong future for these workers and the outstanding quality product that they have been turning out and will continue to for many, many years to come,” he said. “Bombardier are actually exceeding the local content requirements that we wrote into the contract, creating jobs and skills and opportunities along the way and creating a much better experience for the travelling public. “You can’t get a better outcome than that.” Mr Andrews inspected the 51st E-Class tram
Million apples fill the need By Cam Lucadou-Wells Narre Warren North-based orchard Montague has pledged 1 million apples to national food-rescue charity SecondBite. The apples will be distributed to groups such as The Salvation Army and Uniting Care as well as under-privileged primary schools across Australia. Montague director Scott Montague said it was the company’s largest donation of apples since it was established in 1948. It has been partners with SecondBite for eight years. Montague will also donate 10 cents for every kilogram of the orchard’s Jazz apples sold at Coles supermarkets from 17-24 April. Coles will match the donation dollarfor-dollar. SecondBite provides access to surplus fresh, nutritious food for people in need in Australia. It has redistributed 32 million kilograms of food across Australia, equating to over 64,000,000 meals.
Premier Daniel Andrews speaks at Bombardier last month. to roll off the production line. It was the first of a $295 million State Government order for 20 trams, made in 2015 and following its previous order for 50 trams.
“This project is 500 jobs. That’s the best way to look at this,” Mr Andrews said. “Five hundred livelihoods depend on these orders.”
Coles fruit manager Daniel Williams and Montague Fresh director Scott Montague handout apples at Foothills Community Centre.

SPORT Stingrays launch wobbly attack By Nicholas Creely Effort and intensity is likely to be the theme at training for the Dandenong Stingrays after a wobbly and at times inconsistent start to the season. With the TAC Cup enjoying a week off due to the Easter break, the Rays sit in sixth spot with a 2-1 record, and despite being a promising attacking side, they sit in the bottom-four for points conceded (280). The Rays have been heavily outscored in the last-half and in particular in last-quarters over the course of the first three matches, with a 25-point differential from their opponents. Starting the season with a solid first-up win against Gippsland Power, the Rays were dismantled by a slicker, bigger and more professional Geelong Falcons side by more than 12 goals before scrapping over the line an inconsistent win over the Greater Western Victoria Rebels by 20 points. Assistant Coach Nick Cox said there are things that need to be worked on over the break to ensure the team remains competitive and gets the best out of themselves, but also remains wary of over-working the players. “If we get beat in a contest by a bigger and better opponent, then so be it, but it’s just effort that we want - there’s a couple of things we need to do before we play Sandringham,” he said. “We want the kids to play well for as long as they can - right now that inconsistency is there, but at the same time it is a development program. “A lot of our players have had a pretty heavy workload so far and we have to be wary of that -
The Stingrays sit 2-1 after an inconsistent start to the season. 166487 we’ve got about 13 players who played in the Vic Country trial game, so most of our squad will continue to play over the break, so the workload won’t really drop off as such. The Rays are likely to be heavily affected in their pursuit of a TAC Cup premiership with the likelihood that up to 10 youngsters will be in the

Vic Country squad at the National Championships within the next few months - a positive as a whole but a potential to derail their season. “It’s going to be a tough scenario, that’s why getting wins early this season are so important Oscar Clavarino, Hunter Clark, Luke Davies, Tom De Koning, Bailey Williams, Mitch Riordan and
Sam Fletcher are expected to play Vic Country, and potentially Bailey Morrish could also play in the Vic Country side,” Cox said. But that just means that there are more opportunities for their lesser experienced kids, with some impressive names already showing they have what it takes to step up to the level. “Mitch Cotter in the midfield has been fantastic - he’s probably been our most consistent player in the first three matches - Ali Zijai is a good player, and Mason DeWit is a really superb kid, those types will obviously need to step up in the absence of the leaders,” Cox said. Cotter, the youngster from Rowville who doesn’t turn 18 until September this year, is probably leading the Stingrays’ Best and Fairest so far this season. The young midfielder is averaging 21 disposals per game so far this season, and is also averaging an impressive six tackles. Zijai, 17, from Noble Park is another midfielder making a name for himself - averaging close to 22 touches per game so far, he has laid a whopping 24 tackles to date and has also regularly hit the scoreboard. He recently featured in the Channel 9 program Future Stars in which he was nominated for the Young Multicultural Player of the Year in the TAC Cup after an impressive performance against the Rebels. The TAC Cup girls head into the break with a 3-1 record and in third spot. The Rays return to the field on 22 April with a massive clash against Sandringham Dragons at Frankston Oval, with the first-bounce at 10.30am.
Roads to recovery lead star pair to Team of the Year Legends enter By Nicholas Creely hall of fame James Pattinson and Brendan Rose have both been recognised for their outstanding seasons with selection in the Victorian Premier Cricket Team of the Year. At the annual Ryder Medal on Friday 7 April at Crown Palladium, Pattinson and Rose were both selected for the first time. Pattinson had an extraordinary year back from major injuries that have derailed him for several years, plundering 560 runs from just 10 innings, while also taking 18 wickets at an average of 11.17 for Dandenong. The superstar all-rounder, who has also played 17 tests for Australia, was in vintage touch with the Panthers throughout the 2016/17 season. He was instrumental in several victories for Dandy, with his two centuries (137 and 131) in particular showcasing his talent with the bat. He also came third in the Ryder Medal with 23 votes despite playing very little cricket after Christmas due to Victorian duties, and is currently overseas in the UK playing County Cricket. Other Panthers to feature predominantly in the Ryder Medal were Lincoln Edwards (18 votes), Brett Forsyth (15), James Nanoupoulos (12) and skipper Tom Donnell (9). Dasun Opanayaka also came third in the Men’s Premier Seconds award with an impressive 23 votes, while Mark Boraston came equal-third in the Men’s Premier Fourths award with 16 votes. For the Swans, Rose (19 votes) finished inside the top 10, while Lachlan Sperling (10), Nathan Lambden (9) and Luke Manders (8) were among the top 50. Rose was one of the competition’s biggest improvers, taking a brilliant 39 wickets for the season and almost topping the wicket-tally across the competition. Out of the four, only Craig Slocombe is the only current player, with the superstar batsman enjoying another strong 2016/17 campaign for the Bloods as its skipper. Stars upstaged as Joyce snags 11 for Doveton By David Nagel SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE - ROUND 2 Doveton full-forward Taylor Joyce has upstaged former Melbourne stars Russell Robertson and Daniel Ward with an 11-goal haul in the Doves mightily impressive 135-point victory over Hampton Park at Robert Booth Reserve. Joyce’s stellar Good Friday contribution is the highest individual tally from a Doveton player in more than a decade, falling one short of Peter Greenstreet’s perfect dozen against Cranbourne in round 18, 2006. Joyce ran rampant in the first half, kicking four in the first quarter and three in three minutes at the start of the second, heading to half time with nine on the board. Only the great work of Hampton Park youngster, CJ Layfield, kept things in check in the second half. A big crowd turned out at the Redbacks spiritual home ground to see if Robertson and Ward could bring some competitiveness to a side that has won just four of its last 84 outings. The answer -well it was an emphatic no! Joyce had two on the board inside five minutes, the Doves three goals up after Nick Battle sandwiched one in between. Battle and Lachie Batten added to Joyce’s heroics to leave the Doves six-goals up, 7.2 to 1.2 at the first break. Hampton Park coach Dean Warren had his headaches to deal with. “We need to be stronger at the ball and cover their outlets at the stoppages,” Warren began. “They (Doveton) have had nine scoring shots from 10 inside 50s. Going at 90 percent, which means we’re not applying enough pressure.” Warren is trying to match motors with some of the elite midfielders in the competition but -while it’s an admirable attitude to have- just doesn’t have the cattle to do so. The Redbacks were too loose at the stoppages in the first half -ball hunting- allowing the likes of Michael Henry, Sam Raru, Battle and Batten to take full advantage of Russell Gabriel’s dominant form in the ruck. The Redbacks clearly have several areas of high deficiency this season, but the big-man department is most concerning. Gabriel monstered hard-working but illequipped types like Heath Peach, Aaron Holden and Tom Marshall to provide his midfield with a feast of Easter goodies. As a consequence the Redbacks’ defence was put under an enormous amount of pressure. Layfield, Josh Craig and Jackson Philpin stood tall against a constant barrage from the Doves and -despite Joyce’s 11-goal haul- could hold their heads high for the remainder of the long weekend. Layfield was particularly impressive, keeping Joyce to just two goals after half time. Warren now needs to decide whether to continue down the path of trying to play an exciting brand of football or go one-on-one at the stoppages and try to deflate the opposition’s buoyancy.
Doveton man-mountain Russell Gabriel dominated the stoppages in a one-sided Good Friday contest against Hampton Park. 166734 Picture: ROB CAREW Gabriel and Joyce will battle it out for best on test, Robertson devoid of opportunity up forward ground honours in the Doves best and fairest this while Ward was serviceable without standing out. year, while Henry continued a brilliant start to the The Redbacks have no time to time to sit back season, adding four goals to his five against Ofand lick their wounds - a visit from early-season ficer in round one. Suffragette has time on her side Suffragette stamped herself as a potential star of the sport after sensationally winning the $210,000 group 2 Launching Pad by 10 lengths at Sandown Park on Thursday. Trained by the husband-and-wife team of Steve and Kerrie White, Suffragette was sent to the boxes as the $3.60 equal favourite after her dominant semi-final win. She and was quick to reward the punter’s confidence, beginning cleanly from box six to lead clearly through the first turn. The field bunched behind her allowing Suffragette to establish a race winning break down the back straight and charge to the line to score in 29.43. “After I saw the box draw, I sat down and worked it out how I thought the race would be run - the gods were smiling on us,” said a delighted handler Steve White. “It’s been a beautiful week, haven’t had any hiccups at all. I was always confident that if she jumped she’d win.” Suffragette burst on to the racing scene in October 2016 with a dazzling 12 length win on debut. By January she’d already chalked up five wins (just one short of the six win limit for the series) but a minor injury allowed White to switch his focus on to the $400,000 series. “We’ve been building up her race fitness and I said that she’d peak on race night,“ White said. “Last week she went 29.35 and I thought ‘I hope she hasn’t peaked,’ but look at her now, she wouldn’t blow out a candle.” White had been bullish about Suffragette’s chances from the outset, even backing her at $201 prior to the series and again at $126 after she ran fourth in her heat. “I was really confident with her; she’s always been a superstar. She broke in at Billy McMahon’s and he rang me and said she’s a superstar, she’s a freak - that’s his words - he said she’s a freak.” The win was the biggest for White since making the move from New South Wales to Victoria in October 2015 and there may be more to come. At just 26 months of age, Suffragette has already won $178,000 in prize money and will now be set for the $145,000 group 1 Sapphire Crown to be run at Sandown Park in May - a race White won twice with AGRA Hall Of Famer Paua To Burn in 2004 and 2005. “Whether she won or lost tonight, the sky’s the limit for her.”
Barnes brilliance has Thunder roaring in the valley By Nicholas Creely NPL2 EAST REVIEW - ROUND 10 The reputation of Brandon Barnes as one of Victoria’s best soccer players continues to gain traction after another hat-trick of goals on Saturday. With a top-two spot on the line, Barnes was simply magnificent once again, leading the Dandenong Thunder to a commanding 3-1 victory over a highly-rated Goulburn Valley in Shepparton. In front of a strong Suns’ crowd, the Thunder silenced them with some brilliant passages of play generated from an in-form defence line, with Barnes reaping the rewards. Barnes has now scored 13 goals from just 10 starts in what has been yet another unbelievable performance. As a result of the impressive victory, the Thunder move into equal second-spot with five wins and just two spots from the top. The Thunder will once again be on the road
next Saturday to tackle Brunswick in what looms as a massive task in their quest for a top-two spot. Down at Frank Holohan Soccer Complex, Dandenong City SC flexed their muscles in the game-of-the-round, drawing 2-2 with Murray United to hold onto top-spot. Early it was all the City making the play, with some near-misses highlighting a productive first 15 minutes. But then the United tightened up defensively and the game became even more exciting as they threatened to counter-attack. And right on the stroke of the half-time break, former A-League legend Archie Thompson excited the crowd with a wonderful goal for United, giving them a clear advantage. But only moments later Duganzic, also a former A-League star, levelled the score and make it anyone’s ball game. It took until the 75th minute to break the gridlock, with the City lobbing the ball over the keeper Kerim to take a 2-1 lead, before just a few minutes later a fortuitious goal from Bugeja lev-
elled the score once again. And despite both sides throwing everything they could at one another, no side could take advantage and take the game away. Down at Springvale, the White Eagles FC have won an absolute thriller over Box Hill 1-0 in a last-second penalty shot. In what was a close and tense affair throughout, it took until the 93rd minute for a goal to be scored, with a handball called against Box Hill to hand them a devastating victory. The White Eagles remain third from the bottom and need to keep finding a way to win, and have a perfect opportunity against Moreland City. In other matches, Richmond SC won 2-0 over Eastern Lions and Melbourne City belted Nunawading 3-1 in a commanding top-two display.

Tigersharks jump in to show off their skills at nationals By Nicholas Creely The 2017 Georgina Hope Foundation Australian Age Swimming Championships over Easter was set to provide the perfect opportunity for the Tigersharks Swimming Team to show off the talent that has been developing for several years. The competition, which will be held at the Sleeman Sports Complex in Brisbane from 16 April to 23 April, features some of the country’s most talented young swimmers. It’s an exciting young team, with Kyle Young, Jy Macgregor, Shaun Banzon, Tyson Caddy, Rebecca Henderson and Rachel Emmett to take to the pool and represent the south-east region. The Tigersharks are well known to produce champions from all other the Dandenong and Casey regions, with Olympian Josh Beaver, Para Pan Pacific representative Eli Cole, Australian representative Matson Lawson and Commonwealth Games representative Mitchell Pratt all coming through their program. Tigersharks Head Coach Craig Albery, who

mers see it as the pinnacle competition of the year,” he said. The team, which is going through a transitional phase, has seen several young swimmers raise some eyebrows so far this year, something Albery believes will make the organisation even stronger in the future. “We are in a big redevelopment phase at the moment and what has been really pleasing is to have several of our younger and less experienced swimmers post times within two seconds of the national standard,” he said. “That, of course, is very exciting for them and will, hopefully, see us in a better position as an organisation this time next year.” The club’s Vice-President Doug Vohs praised the group of young swimmers who have the capacity to do great things in the competition. “We are really proud of the swimmers who have qualified for this year’s Nationals in Brisbane,” he said. “They have all worked really hard throughout the year.”

The Dandenong Rangers are flying in the SEABL at the moment, with both the Men’s and Women’s team sitting in solid positions heading into a well earnt Easter break. In Round 3 on 7 April, the men travelled down to Geelong Arena to take on the Supercats and, in what was a tight-tussle, it was the Rangers who emerged victorious, 62-75. But it wasn’t tight until the second-half, with the Rangers burning up the court to take a 21-point advantage into half-time. And despite the Supercats throwing all they could at the Rangers, the backcourt pair of Lucas Barker and Chauncey Orr lifted when it mattered to combine for 30 points and 11 assists in an impressive display. Both have been massive players in their strong start to the season with their all-round abilities. The Rangers Men then backed it up with an equally impressive all-round team performance the very next day against Canberra, putting the Gunners to the sword in the very last seconds to register a thrilling 80-77 victory. Once again, Barker (20 points) and Orr (31 points) were dominant, racking up almost the entirety of the Rangers’ points in another eyecatching display. They now sit comfortably with a 3-1 record and in fifth spot ahead of a crucial block after Easter - they will take on Mt Gambier on Friday 21 April in what looms as a huge task against one of the in-form teams of the competition. Equally so, the Rangers Women are flying with a similar 3-1 record and in second spot after a dominant previous round. Starting their weekend off with a clash against Geelong, the Rangers pipped the Supercats 73-68, with star WNBL player Aimie Clydesdale dominating with 30 points on 57 per cent shooting, highly influential numbers. On Saturday 8 April, the Women absolutely smashed Sandringham 83-39 in a commanding

MOTORING Cute, cheap and functional By Ewan Kennedy One of my frequently voiced gripes about design is that fashion too often is allowed to override function. We get cars that look stunning, but have cramped interiors, or too little ground clearance, or silly little boots. How a car as cute and fascinating in its style as the Suzuki Ignis can be both fashionable and functional brings a big smile to my face. Just look at that pert nose, fascinating tail with the stylised Suzuki badge in the C-pillars and interesting interior then jump inside one at a local Suzuki dealer and be amazed at the amount of space it provides. It’s not really a small car, or a small SUV, rather a brilliant crossover between the two. The entry level GL manual comes to market at $15,990, the CVT $16,990, while the GLX, CVT only, tops out the range at $18,990. The latter was our test car. On-road costs need to be added to these prices. Ignis GLX has 16-inch alloy wheels, up from the GL’s 15s, automatic LED headlamps with integrated LED daytime running lights, keyless entry and push start, automatic air-conditioning and privacy rear glass. We love the shape, and the customisation it cries out for. Colours, including two-tone combinations, give plenty of chances to personalise.
You can also customise the grille trim and centre garnish, choose wheel decals, side stripes and the C-pillar gill slits. Even the door mirrors and foglights can get their own personality. The Ignis’ cabin can also be personalised with the colour choices on the seat trim, centre console, transmission surrounds, grab handles on the doors, air vents. Interestingly the previous Ignis, which was last sold in Australia in 2005, had a fair bit of Australian engineering input. This time around, although our local guys and gals were part of the global team, most of the work was done by Japan. Standard across the range are 7.0inch infotainment touch screen for satellite navigation and rear-view camera, as well as access to audio, aux inputs, USB and SD card, Bluetooth and smartphone connection to Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink. The leather trimmed three-spoke steering wheel has audio and cruise control buttons, plus hands-free phone use. Safety is five-star with dual front, side and curtain airbags, electronic stability program, anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution and brake assist. Somewhat illogically, CVT adds a hill holder. Head and legroom in all seats are
Cute and practical at the same time, the new Suzuki Ignis is something special impressive and the hip point height of the rear seat makes access and exit easy. Luggage space ranges from 264 litres with all seatbacks raised to 1104 litres with the rear seats folded. The squared off tail make loading easy, as does the higher than average height of the Ignis. While 60 kilowatts and 120 Newton metres aren’t what you would call big numbers the Ignis weighs in at just 820 kg so performs pretty well. The CVT can be irritating at time in the way it sounds, but there’s no denying its efficiency. Serious hills can tax the powertrain at times, but the little car manages to do its best.
For those who are planning to carry four large adults, and that’s possible despite the Suzuki’s apparently diminutive dimensions, it might be an idea to get all four aboard and find a steep hill for the private pre-purchase road test. Comfort is pretty good on most roads and certainly on motorways. But rough roads can bounce things about at times. Handling is nimble and competent and there’s the sort of pleasure offered in small light cars that’s seldom there in large ones. Fuel consumption was often below five litres per 100 kilometres on easypaced road, and we seldom saw more
Model range Ignis GL 1.2-litre five-door wagon: $15,990 (manual); $16,990 (CVT) Ignis GLX 1.2-litre five-door wagon: $18,990 (CVT)
than seven litres per 100 even when we worked the little Suzy hard in boring suburban areas. Fashion and function in the one package - love it - and the most expensive Suzuki Ignis will be sitting in your garage with some change from $20,000 in your pocket. Well done Suzuki.
