A team of five Lilydale Anglicare workers are about to take a leap of faith from a 27-storey building - as part of an adventurous bid to raise funds for local disadvantaged youth. Members Catherine, Celeste, Donna, Kathy and Tori - better-known as team Eastern Spirit - will take part in the Altitude Shift event on Friday 28 April. Their participation will see them abseil down Melbourne’s iconic St James building, which stands a daunting 113 metres high.

The aim of the challenge is to highlight the difficulties associated with living outside of the ‘comfort zone’. When living in and out of homes, many young Victorians experience this every year. Team member Celeste admitted there were a few nerves creeping in, though it was mixed with much excitement. “We’ve created this team because five strong, spirited women believe in taking the plunge down a building to raise awareness and money for kids in care,” she said.

“These kids need our help to give them opportunities they don’t get because of their family situations. “There are a few nerves already setting in among some of the team members, but this is a great way to extend relationships.” While the members all work throughout the Eastern Victorian region, they work in different departments. Celeste said it had been a great way for them to bond over a common goal, helping in-need youth. “The team was formed by two members, deciding they would participate in

the personal challenge for a cause that resonated with them,” she said. “They then asked anyone they saw if they wanted to join the team. “This resulted in our team having members who all work in different programs and areas across different sites in the Anglicare eastern region. “All five team members not only work in the Anglicare east region, but live there as well, so we feel connected to the eastern community of children and young people in care and the dedicated carers and staff who look after them.”

Celeste said the experience of being out of their comfort zone didn’t even begin to compare to those life experiences of those they were aiming to help. As Victoria’s largest foster care provider, Anglicare Victoria houses more than 400 children per night. In addition to foster and residential care, their services cover emergency relief, parenting and family services, financial and legal services and more. So far, team Eastern Spirit has raised $1830, with a goal of $2125. To help their cause, visit http://bit. ly/2oxE8ju.

Union ‘calls’ ’em all By Derek Schlennstedt The Monbulk state electorate was part of a targeted campaign that saw three marginal Labor seats in Victoria receive over 150,000 robocalls. In a new campaign to keep the Heyfield timber mill open, voters in the electorates of Monbulk, Mordialloc, and Narre Warren received unsolicited robocalls from the CFMEU on Monday night, 10 April. The phone calls urged residents to contact their local member and to ask them to help support the Heyfield timber mill. Deputy Premier and Monbulk MP James Merlino was one of the three targeted by the CFMEU robocalls which told voters that the Victorian Government could save the mill by increasing its allocation of timber and that local MP James Merlino had ‘done nothing’ to help save the mill.

The robocalls, presented listeners with a pre-recorded message from a worker at the Heyfield mill who was asking residents to contact their local member, to help save his job and town. “Our mill needs more timber supply and only the Victorian Government can fix the problem. “So far, James Merlino, your local member has done nothing, and I mean nothing. Like so many politicians, he’s big on words and nowhere to be found when we need him. “Please help me save my job and our town,” states the pre-recorded audio message. Of the 150,000 calls it is alleged that around 50,000 were made to the Monbulk electorate. Last month Australian Sustainable Hardwoods said it had to shut the mill down after the most recent timber allocation from Vic forests of 200,000 cu-

bic metres over three years was deemed too low for operation. A spokesperson for CFMEU said that the people working at Heyfield were currently in limbo and did not know what their future held, and the campaign acted to help put pressure on the government to make a decision. “People around Heyfield are hurting due to uncertainty around their future and their lives.” “The purpose has been to get local voters to put pressure on MPs and the government.” Only marginal seats were targeted with Deputy Premier James Merlino holding the Monbulk seat by five per cent. A spokesperson for CFMEU said that issues were more likely to be raised and heard in marginal seats. “The intention is to ensure the government hears the message, and in mar-

ginal seats the issues are more in focus and likely to be heard.” “There’s been enough discussion and now it’s time for the government to make a decision.” To keep the mill open would require a sustainable source of timber and suggestions have been made by the CFMEU to reduce the buffer around the lead beaters possum which would reportedly release around 10,000ha of commercial forest for logging. A statement attributable to a spokesperson for Agriculture Minister Jaala Pulford stated that the government would continue to explore options to sell the mill. “The government believes that the Heyfield mill has a future and is continuing to engage with ASH and worker representatives to facilitate the sale of the mill to a new operator to save local jobs,” the spokesman said.

The anticipated Lilydale Lake Play Space officially opened to the public on Tuesday 11 April, with many children on school holidays checking out the new facility. An inter-generational approach to designing this play space is one of the main features of the design, which Yarra Ranges Council hopes will set a precedent for further developments in the region. This method encourages children to join in play with other family members, such as parents or grandparents. Just some of the features include a giant basket swing, water play mushrooms, a platypus-shaped climbing frame and much more to explore. Pictures: YARRA RANGES COUNCIL

A 26-year-old Belgrave South man is lucky to be alive after he drove his 4WD Mitsubishi Challenger off the carriageway on Selby-Aura Road and rolled 30 metres down a hill. 167299

Lucky escape for local driver A 26-year-old Belgrave South man has careened off a 5 metre embankment and rolled his car 30 metres down a residents paddock in Menzies Creek. The case is currently being investigated by police with the cause believed to be alcohol related. At the start of the Easter long weekend on 13 April, at 9.30pm, a 4WD Mitsubishi Challenger has driven off the carriageway on Selby-Aura Road and rolled down an embankment into a local resident’s paddock. Senior Sergeant Carolyn Hill at Emerald Police station said it was a miracle the man wasn’t killed. “It was extraordinary that he wasn’t killed and that he didn’t kill anyone else.” “It’s very disappointing that people are still risking their lives and other people’s by drink driving,” Sen Const Hill said. Local residents heard the crash and assisted emergency services in freeing the man who was trapped in the vehicle. It’s alleged that the man was thrown from his front seat and was found in the back seat with his leg pinned under the vehicle. A local resident who was first on scene at the crash, helped to jack up the car in order to free the man’s leg. Ambulance Victoria has reported that the man sustained head and leg injuries and was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition. Five emergency service vehicles attended the scene including four CFA trucks, an ambulance and a police vehicle. Sen Const Hill urged people to be safe when travelling home from their Easter holidays. “Take your time, pull over and take breaks so you’re not fatigued, make sure you’re driving to the conditions and pay attention,” she said. 7725BHC

About Christmas time, I predicted Malcolm (Turnbull) would be gone by Easter. Well, look, it hasn’t happened. This year, Easter is close to when the Federal Budget is read; that is my excuse. I hear today that the findings of the running of the election last year were not good. One of the people running it has already fallen on his sword; pretty bad when they turned a 14-seat majority into one - as usual, it seems it is Labor’s fault. I have to mention, a few weeks ago when Malcolm went into Parliament all guns firing, so to speak (well, Bill Shorten was a sycophant… on and on he went), the Coalition members were cheering, laughing and banging on the tables. But did it do any good? Think back to 1993 to the Paul Keating speech; John Hewson was the leader of the opposition. Think of Julia’s misogyny speech, that shook up Tony Abbott; they are still talked about. But, Malcolm, it soon fizzled out. I doubt if anybody will remember the date. Sadly, Malcolm, you promised so much and delivered very little. Val Butler, Cockatoo.

Victoria’s justice system stands at a crossroads. Crime on our streets, in our homes and local businesses, is rising sharply in Evelyn and across Victoria. It is more than statistics; it is the terrible personal experiences that people share with me every day. Everyone has the right to feel safe at home, in the workplace and in the community. This is why I back the Liberal Nationals policy announcement to tackle violent re-offending: to introduce mandatory jail terms for criminals found guilty of a second violent offence, having been found guilty of a prior serious violent offence. For too long, the Andrews Government has led a soft on crime approach. Enough is enough. Keeping our communities safe should be the number one priority for any government. It’s time to make Victoria safe again. Bridget Vallence, Liberal candidate for Evelyn.

THREE years on and they’re still not ‘burger-ing off’. The No Maccas in the Hills campaigners continued their fight against the international fast food giant on Friday 7 April, the date that marks three years since their campaign started. Despite objections, McDonald’s was allowed to build a restaurant in Tecoma in 2014 and passionate locals have continued to voice their concern. Many still meet every Friday from 9am out the front of Tecoma McDonald’s to show their passion remains as strong as ever. Group member Prue Licht re-

called the disappointment felt over the VCAT decision at the time. “In 2013, the March in March was attended by thousands of hills residents who walked from the Cameo in Belgrave to Tecoma to show their objection,” she said. “But McDonald’s ignored the clear opposition by council and the community, and applied for the cases to be decided by VCAT. “Despite hundreds of written objections, VCAT ruled the store could be built.” Ms Licht said the campaign ultimately received international recognition and became synonymous with communities seeking the right to decide about local-level issues.

What happens to the pets? By Derek Schlennstedt While most people associate Easter with holidays and chocolate eggs, those luxuries couldn’t be further from the minds of animal shelters around Victoria. Many shelters will be preparing themselves to be inundated with abandoned ’Easter’ bunnies, which they are left to deal with after the cutenessfactor fades and owners realise the responsibilities of keeping a pet. Pet stores throughout Victoria traditionally report a significant increase in the selling of domestic rabbits during the Easter period. In the weeks and months following, many of these rabbits may find themselves at the Rabbit Run-away Orphanage in Olinda, where they will be looked after. Though, not all will make it there, with many being abandoned. Judi Inglis, owner of the orphanage, said that each Easter the orphanage sees an influx of rabbits. Last year they received a call only two weeks after Easter from people wanting to get rid of their recently bought bunny. Judi said that people need to recognise that rabbits are pets that require responsibility and that - unlike the general consensus - rabbits aren’t an ‘easy pet’. “If you’re going to consider a rabbit as a pet, consider it as a pet and not as an Easter present or a way to placate the kids,” she said. “Learn about the animal before purchase, find out if that animal is going to suit your lifestyle and is the best pet for your family. “Rabbits are a prey animal and are not good with children under eight, they’re not as interactive as a dog.”

Judi Inglis at Rabbit Run-away orphanage in Olinda urges people to buy a chocolate rabbit rather than a real one this Easter. Meanwhile, Judi is unsure if she will be able to take many of the rabbits that will be brought to them after the Easter holidays. The Rabbit Orphanage is facing continuous vet bills for the upkeep and requirements of their rabbits. Judi says that if they aren’t able to reach their GofundMe goal, they will be unable to continue to take rabbits. The orphanage is the only non-kill rabbit rescue in Victoria and currently has over 150 temporary foster homes

54-58 Durham Road, Kilsyth Phone: 9728 3587 Email info@japarahouse.com.au

for their rabbits. Vet bills are hampering the orphanage’s efforts to care for their bunnies, with some requiring treatment such as the removal of cancerous lumps, cysts, and various important dental work. A fluffy black and white bunny called Toby required ongoing veterinary work after an abscess on his cheek began pressing on his brain, causing regular seizures. The six-year-old rabbit required extensive surgery to remove the abscess

and then had to remain at animal emergency for four days, all of this adding to the mountain of veterinary bills. The orphanage is completely run by volunteers, who are asking the surrounding community for donations so they can continue to accept and help rabbits that are abandoned. Judi welcomes people to visit the orphanage over the Easter weekend, where visitors can learn about what is required to look after a bunny and meet some of the rabbits.

167234

The orphanage is open over the weekend and on Easter Monday from 1pm until 4pm. “We are full of Easter bunnies here; so if you’re considering rabbits for Easter, then perhaps come up and make that the Easter treat instead,” Judi said. Rabbit Run-Away Orphanage is located at 19 Stanley Street, Olinda, You can donate money to help the orphanage at https://www.gofundme. com/special-needs-rabbits-vet-bills.

Where to pay your respects By Derek Schlennstedt This year’s Anzac Day marks 102 years since the opening battles of World War I involving Australian soldiers. On 25 April 1915, the brave soldiers of Australia and New Zealand landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula, entering into their first battle with the intent to capture and secure a safe passage for Allied forces. Dig deep for returned soldiers The Emerald RSL Sub-Branch is calling on the community to support its efforts to raise vital funds for Australia’s heroes. The local RSL’s annual Anzac Appeal has begun in earnest, with volunteers all geared up to sell thousands of badges across the region. On offer will be a variety of Anzac Appeal badges, including a special badge to commemorate the last great charge of the Australian Light Horse at Beersheba in 1917. Emerald sub-branch president

Peter Maloney said the appeal continued to gather momentum. “All our dedicated volunteers, often veterans, are determined to get into the community and not only sell Anzac Appeal badges, but to share their stories and experiences. “It is a wonderful time for our community to come together and pay respects to our past and present servicemen and women.” Meanwhile, RSL Victoria’s appeals manager Peter Smith said the

funds enabled the delivery of muchneeded assistance to those men and women who have served our country. “Funds from the Anzac Appeal go to a variety of services and programs for veterans who need help and is tailored to their needs and circumstances,” he said. “It can include assistance such as medical bills, emergency home repairs, food vouchers and relief from social isolation. “Providing premium welfare ser-

vices is a top priority for RSL Victoria.” Mr Smith said each RSL subbranch in Victoria played a vital role within their community and for many veterans. You can purchase an Anzac Appeal badge from your local RSL sub-branch or outside the Emerald Village Newsagency. Anzac Appeal badges are also available at Woolworths. You can also donate online at www.anzacappeal.com.au

Emerald’s 21st century clinic Emerald Medical Centre celebrated the opening of its new extensions on Saturday 8 April. It was a celebration of the multiple roles this iconic centre plays in the hills community. Dr George Somers said: “Over the past 60 years, Emerald Medical Centre has supported the eastern half of the La Trobe federal electorate. I am grateful to Jason Wood MP for his support over the years and for helping to open the centre”. They are proud that we can now offer an everexpanding, comprehensive list of health services to the people of Emerald and districts. In addition to their eight GPs and four nurses, they have a large and increasing team of allied health professionals and are developing a variety of visiting medical specialists. They invite their patients to nominate specialists that they would like them to recruit. Emerald Medical Centre has had a long and distinguished relationship with the emergency services in the hills. They were actively involved during the Ash Wednesday fires, the fires of 1997 and Black Saturday. They helped form the Emerald Emergency Planning Group, and are an active member and over a dozen emergency vehicles showed their support for our efforts by attending the opening. Dr Somers thanked Commissioner Craig Lapsley, of Emergency Management Victoria, for joining the local emergency services teams and helping to open the centre. “Our next project is to develop comprehensive and co-ordinated care management,” Dr Somers said. “We are developing a team-based approach to health care in which your GPs and nurses work closely with a broad in-house allied health team and range of visiting specialists, managed by experienced care co-ordinators. “We aim to deliver the health needs of our community locally, with minimum external travel and disruption to the lives of our patients and their carers.”

Cricketers named as reps By Peter Douglas Reigning Jack Feaver Medal winner, Cameron Wheeler, heads a list of three cricketers from the Ferntree Gully District Cricket Association to win representative honours for their 2016/17 season. The Upwey-Tecoma paceman, 21, joins fellow league talents Cody Morris and wicketkeeper Clint Buckland to be named in the Victorian Country Cricket League Region 8 (South East Country) Team of the Year. The players were selected from the premier division within their association. From these nominations, selectors choose a Victorian Country Team of the Year from across the state. Wheeler enjoyed a stunning year, with the young tyro claiming 42 wickets at 11, while also chipping in with 148 runs at an average of a tick over 14 runs. The nomination has capped off a brilliant season, during which he was the winner of the bowling average for the Reeves Shield and won the league medal by a record 10 votes, after polling in 10 out of 12 matches. Meanwhile, neighbouring Yarra Valley Cricket Association was also heav-

ily represented in the team, with league stand-outs Simon Young, David Lever and Kane Jones also making the cut. Lever, in particular, enjoyed an outstanding year, celebrating a premiership with Warburton-Millgrove, in addition to taking out the THR Drummond Medal, the highest individual honour in the association. He amassed 454 runs and 49 wickets throughout the season. Kane Jones was also included in the Yarra Valley’s ‘Team of the Year’, with the brilliant Mount Evelyn batsman widely acknowledged as one of the league’s finest. In the representative squad, captain-coach of the premiership-winning Kooweerup, Mark Cooper, was named as skipper. VCCL Region 8 Team of the Year 2016/17: Mark Cooper (captain) WGCA; Cody Morris FTGDCA; Daniel Warwick MPCA: Chris Brittain (vice captain) MPCA; Kane Jones YVCA; Clint Buckland (wicketkeeper) FTGDCA; David Lever YVCA; Justin Grant MPCA; Simon Young YVCA; Tom Tyrrell WGCA; Cameron Wheeler FTGDCA; Dwayne Doig WGCA.

PUFFING BILLY RAILWAY 36th Great Train Race – Sunday April 30, 2017

ROAD CLOSURES - HOW IT AFFECTS YOU

Great Train Race NOTICE TO LOCAL RESIDENTS PUFFING BILLY’S GREAT TRAIN RACE SUNDAY APRIL 30, 2017 A large number of traffic management personnel will once again join forces with local community groups and Puffing Billy volunteers to minimise disruption to local residents and businesses during the 36th Puffing Billy Great Train Race on Sunday April 30, 2017 The Great Train Race is Puffing Billy’s major annual fundraiser, with all proceeds going towards the Puffing Billy Menzies Creek Museum Redevelopment project. Now in its 36th year, the Great Train Race will attract 3,000 athletes along with their friends and family to the Dandenong Ranges. Local residents and businesses can expect an influx in traffic throughout the region, particularly between 7am-1pm on race day. Variable message signs will be placed along the race route, which winds 13.5km from the start line in Belgrave to the finish at Emerald Lake Park. Informative fliers have been distributed to local residents and businesses detailing temporary road closures and possible traffic delays which may be encountered on the morning of the Great Train Race. You can download a copy of this flier and view detour maps online at www.greattrainrace.com.au Competitors have always expressed their gratitude to the local community for their support on race day, and this event would not be possible without the generous assistance of each and every volunteer. You too can be a part of this unique event by stepping out to line the streets on Sunday April 30, and cheer the runners on to the finish line.

On Sunday April 30, 2017, the following traffic management safety controls will occur on roads between Belgrave and Emerald Lake Park. This will affect the race route and surrounding roads between 7am and 1pm. Below are instructions in each of the five (5) designated areas, along with estimated times when major roads will be closed.
