China light call By Cam Lucadou-Wells

Casey could land a display similar to this Time Tunnel at Lights of the World, Phoenix, 2016. which we achieved and how hungry China was for global friendship and partnership.” During the trip, a swiftly agreed letter-of-intent for establishing an economic partnership agreement between Casey and Dujiangyan City was created. There was interest from an Australian powdered-milk outlet in China in setting up a factory in Melbourne’s south-east, Cr Aziz said. The trip has meanwhile been condemned by Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association (CRRA) as an

“expensive and time-consuming endeavour”. CRRA president Arvo Talvik said the “wasteful” trip had unclear objectives and no accountability. Mr Talvik said the council was advised by an internal report in August 2015 that pursuit of a Chinese economic partnership would require “significant investment” and could take up to 10-20 years for real benefits to materialise. “It’s crazy that this wastefulness is happening, when the council keeps saying it is short of money and will need to put rates up in the future.

“To date, council has paid consultants Bastion S&GO $15,000 to help plan the trip. “We don’t know what other costs have been incurred, but if we included council officers’ wages for time spent working on this China partnership it would quite possibly be $100,000 or more.” Mr Talvik said if the trip led to more Chinese investment in an “already overheated” local housing market, it would be “doing more harm than good”. Cr Aziz said the mission’s delegation had achieved what normally took

City of Casey’s controversial mission to China has possibly landed a largescale lantern festival staged next to Bunjil Place next year. The lantern festival is hoped to open for up to five weeks in autumn or spring 2018 on the site of the to-be demolished Casey Civic Centre in Magid Way. If it goes ahead, the event would be a tourist and jobs attraction, Casey mayor Sam Aziz said. During the 4-10 April trip, the Casey delegation met with Zigong Lantern Festival and Trade Company, which stages 300 such annual festivals in China. The company stages large shows internationally such as Lights of the World, Phoenix, in USA and Canada. Deputy mayor Wayne Smith, who was also part of the delegation, said the light installations including animals and iconic buildings would be on a similar scale to Frankston’s annual Sand Sculpting Australia event. Casey was keen to facilitate the multi-million-dollar show in partnership with other businesses, he said. “We need someone to take it on as an event, with Casey providing in-kind support,” Cr Smith said. “It’s such a big event that it’s not something the council could contemplate on its own.” Cr Aziz said the visit opened up doors to the “highest levels” of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “We got a huge bang for our buck,” said Cr Aziz - who estimated that buck to be $16,000. He emphasised there was little time for sight-seeing. “We had a strong idea of what we wanted to do. “There was surprise at the speed at

several visits by being hosted by the most senior tiers of Foreign Affairs. According to the letter-of-intent with Dujiangyan, the agreement was based on “mutual equality and benefit” across “a number of sectors and industries”. Cr Aziz said on the technology front, however, China would “give us far more than what we can give them”. Dujiangyan is a manufacturing “powerhouse”, with a population of 652,000 and prospering from a 12.5 per cent GDP rise, he said. Its leaders were open to the city’s students being educated at Casey’s private schools as well as Chisholm Institute and Federation University’s nursing and aged-care courses. “There is remarkable wealth in the emerging affluent class of China who are looking to travel and looking for opportunities abroad.” The delegation also visited Australian Milk Bar, a business selling Australian dairy products and wine which had opened 70 outlets in China in the past year. Its owner had expressed interest in setting up a factory to make powdered milk for the Chinese market in Casey on the doorstep of Gippsland’s dairy region, Cr Aziz said. Other stops included the Huawei Corporation’s research and development centre in Shanghai and Chengdu province’s science park which hosts technological start-ups. “We were blown away by this place,” Cr Aziz said of the latter stop. “It reflected exactly our vision for creating Australia’s own Silicon Valley right in our backyard at Minta Farm in the City of Casey.” Cr Aziz said he and Cr Smith had put their entire $5000 councillor allowances for training-and-development towards funding the mission.

Graffiti signs of shame Casey Council is set to install signs designed to shame the State Government into cleaning up a heavily-graffitied rail bridge in Narre Warren. On 18 April, in a motion led by mayor Sam Aziz, the council approved the signs at the Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road overpass to read: “The ugly state of this railway overpass is the responsibility of the State Government.” The signs would then instruct readers to contact the three Casey-based state MPs Luke Donnellan, Judith Graley and Jude Perera and provide their office phone numbers to “get it fixed”. The council will also issue a daily tweet on its Twitter account until the matter was resolved. At the council meeting, mayor Sam Aziz vented his “extreme disgust” that the “vandalism” had yet to be removed from the bridge near the council’s under-construction $125 million Bunjil Place. “The council does not accept the nonsense that has been peddled which suggests that the railway service may have to be stopped for this graffiti to

be cleaned, given that it’s completely external to the train tracks with protective railings above it, in any case,” Cr Aziz’s motion stated. Cr Aziz said the rail asset authority VicTrack had not only refused to remove the “ugly eye-sore” on Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road, Narre Warren, but rejected Casey’s offered solution - to lease the bridge walls as advertising space. A council report on 18 April stated VicTrack had declined due to its policy of not allowing “third party assets” affixed to its railway bridges. Cr Aziz said the authority had stated it only removed graffiti if it threatened public safety. This failed to match Casey’s 24-hour graffiti removal response policy, he said. “Councillors, this has been nothing short of a disgrace.” Further in Cr Aziz’s motion, he stated: “The council feels most embarrassed given the imminent opening of Bunjil Place and the expectation of millions of visitors to the City of Casey every year, and the recent trade mission into China which will result in international visitors, that this ugly public eyesore remains unrectified by its State Government owners.”

Casey Council has stepped up its war on graffiti tags on the Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road overpass. 96949 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Councillor Rosalie Crestani added to the motion that Casey would lobby the state’s Department of Justice for tougher penalties to the “highest possible level”. Fines should be increased, even jail should be considered, Cr Crestani said. She said the crime was serious be-

cause taxpayers footed a damage bill of thousands of dollars of each year. The council will also write to the State Government - and the three local state MPs - against the “obvious passing of the buck” for “what should be a simple clean-up of graffiti”. Under the motion, the council

Sergeant is remembered By Helena Adeloju and Cam Lucadou-Wells Sergeant Ken Rich has been remembered as a popular, passionate member of Narre Warren police station. The 51-year-old husband and father of five was fatally struck by an overtaking Hilux as he cycled with one of his daughters on Princes Highway, Pakenham on Good Friday morning. Long-time friend Sergeant Rob Madeley from Narre Warren Police Station said Sgt Rich’s death had been deeply felt. “He had many friends from serving in the Victorian police force for nearly 40 years,” he said. “He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.” Sgt Madeley, who was a police cadet with Sgt Rich at the beginning of their careers, described his friend as “a family oriented man who adored his wife and five kids”. Despite the tragic circumstances, Sgt Rich died doing something he had loved all his life. A keen cyclist, runner and football player in his youth, Sgt Rich had an enduring passion for sport, his friend said. “He was a mad Sydney Swans supporter,” he said. Casey’s mayor Sam Aziz and deputy mayor Wayne Smith paid tribute to Sgt Rich during a council meeting on 18 April.

Sergeant Ken Rich was tragically killed on Good Friday. 70134

Through working as a Bail Justice for the past 10 years, Cr Smith had personally known Sgt Rich for his broad smile. Often called to the station in the early hours of the morning, Cr Smith was often greeted by Sgt Rich with a ready offer of a tea or coffee. “He will be sorely missed,” Cr Smith said. “It’s certainly a sad place at Narre Warren police station (at the moment).” Cr Aziz and Cr Smith will co-sign a condolence letter to Sgt Rich’s family and Narre Warren police station. Sgt Rich started out as a police cadet in 1980 and graduated from the Police Academy in 1981.

He began his working life as a policeman in Russell Street Police Headquarters in Melbourne before going on to work in Oakleigh, Glen Waverley, and Narre Warren. He also served in temporary positions at Dandenong and Pakenham. He had been serving at the Narre Warren Police Station for more than 20 years. Sgt Rich is survived by his wife Kerry and their adult children Samantha, Charlene, Jacinta, Crystal and Brandon. His funeral is expected to take place with police honours at the Police Academy later this week. The Rich family have asked people to donate to the Amy Gillet Foundation in lieu of flowers.

would also “invite” the government to advise how it would “halt Melbourne’s progression into looking like a poor version of New York in the 1970s”. It would also seek an update from the State Government on progress of “counter-vandalism measures” on the Monash Freeway.

Council rejects safe injecting By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey has declared it is “strongly” opposed to any proposed safe injecting rooms in the municipality. Councillor Susan Serey, who introduced the motion at an 18 April meeting, said Cranbourne had been mentioned in State Parliament as an illicit-drug hotspot. The suburb might be one of the first locations if “drug injecting rooms” were introduced, she said. The injecting-room approach was “soft”, encouraged illicit drug use and drug trafficking and sent the “wrong message” to young people. The issue was better tackled by more drug rehabilitation facilities, with Victoria well behind NSW’s 800 available beds, Cr Serey said. The motion was opposed by councillors Tim Jackson, Damien Rosario and Wayne Smith - who called for a council report on the issue prior to voting. “My dissent isn’t that I’m in favour of drug injecting rooms, but that we have proper information in front of us,” Cr Jackson said. He noted a State Parliament inquiry being held on the issue was due to report back in March 2018. “I would be interested in what it says before I form my view. “Ultimately, it’s a decision for the State Government, not for council.”

Cr Smith, though not supporting or opposing the rooms, said opportunities for clean syringes and counselling might be offered. Councillors Rosalie Crestani and Milla Gilic, in rejecting the rooms, gave examples of close people who had died while on methadone treatment. “It would be stupid to even dabble with an idea that it’s OK to go in a room and use heroin and other drugs,” Cr Gilic said. Cr Gary Rowe, who as a State MP had investigated the issue on an international scale, said “safe” injecting rooms was a misnomer. Even in these rooms, users could be killed immediately by a “hot shot”, Cr Rowe said. They attracted drug dealers in the neighbourhood and “don’t give our children or anyone else’s children a degree of safety whatsoever”. “From what I see here tonight, the consensus of this council is we don’t want it in City of Casey.” Mayor Sam Aziz said the motion was based on politics, and didn’t require more technical information from experts - who were in any case divided on the issue. “I’m willing to give my right arm if 90 per cent of residents don’t agree with this (motion).” Meanwhile, council officers were instructed to report back to councillors on the issue by June.

Medals similar to those stolen from an elderly war widow in Cranbourne North. Picture: VICTORIA POLICE

Stolen valour

Detective Senior Constable Michelle Chiang is urging those who stole the medals to Picture: VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS return them to their rightful owner. 167399

A sick, elderly woman from Cranbourne North has been left devastated after thieves stole two sets of priceless war medals from her home while she was in hospital. The woman was rushed to hospital on 3 March and returned to her Kellett Street home on 7 March to find the six World War II medals missing, along with some jewellery. The 76-year-old, who was too unwell to speak with media, has lost the only relics she had left to remember both her late father and husband. Both had served in the Australian Army. Investigating police officer, Detective Senior Constable Michelle Chiang said this crime had left her speechless. “There are no words to describe someone who could do this,” DSC Chiang said.

“Especially to an elderly lady, who lives alone, who is vulnerable; to steal something so sentimental ...” The six medals that were stolen from the house include an African Star, Pacific Star, Star ’39-’45, Defence Medal, War Medal ’39-’45 and Australian Service Medal ’29-’45. Police are asking anyone with information about where the medals are to come forward and restore them to a widow who is grieving over this loss. “She is not of good health and every conversation we have about this, it is quite distressing for her,” DSC Chiang said. “These were the only things she had left to remember her last father and also her late husband by.” DSC Chiang said while stolen war medals had been known to turn up in secondhand stores and pawn shops, she was ask-

ing the public to keep an eye on online marketplaces for them as well. “Investigations are ongoing and we urge anyone who may know the whereabouts of these medals to return them; drop them off to your nearest police station. Any secondhand dealers that are aware of someone trying to sell medals of this description, please contact police or Crime Stoppers.” “Anyone who sees them on buy, swap and sell sites or social media sites, please contact Crime Stoppers,” she said. Investigators have released images of the medals in the hope that someone recognises them and they can be returned to their owner. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au

High school students from Casey and beyond will have the opportunity to flesh out their perfect career path at the 2017 South East Careers Expo and Try a Trade. The expo will give students and others a handson glimpse into a variety of careers and career paths they wish to take. Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said the expo would be the perfect setting for students to really get a handle on figuring out what they wanted to do in the future. “With interactive displays for people to try out, those who come along and take advantage will really get a feel for the type of work they’d like to do,” he said. “Getting a good feel for an industry, whether it be hairdressing or building, can help any young person decide if it’s something they would like to further explore.” “It’s the ideal way for

young people to feel more informed when exploring a range of industries and occupations, and can also help them plan for an exciting future.” Cr Aziz also said the guidance and advice made accessible to those that attend would be invaluable. “Ensure your child doesn’t miss out on seeking the guidance and inspiration that will help them prepare for a bright and fulfilling post-school future, and check that their school is booked to attend,” he said. The 2017 South East Careers Expo and Try a Trade Expo will be on Tuesday 2 May from 9am to 3pm at the Cranbourne Racecourse. This event is made possible through support from the City of Casey, Casey Cardinia Shire Council, the South East Local Learning and Employment Network, Cranbourne Racecourse and media partner, Star News Group.

Casey Council’s Enviro News Team has recently released a very disappointing autumn edition of Casey’s “Enviro News". Readers are not informed about the serious risks presented by climate change and global warming to the environment, rather the bulletin is headed by an image of an Anzac soldier and a reference to their sacrifices and native Australian trees along Casey’s Avenue of Honour. The fact is there is absolutely no historical link between Anzac soldiers and any respect by them for the natural environment. Many thousands of lives were sacrificed (and the environment compromised) because of Australia’s subservience to British imperialism in WWI. The individuals and groups who did a lot, indirectly, for the natural environment, and peace, by successfully organising against referenda for compulsory military conscription, during WWI, are not even mentioned at Casey’s Avenue of Honour. How bad is that? Moreover, for a bulletin that’s supposed be about our environment, there is no mention of the biggest threat we face today. Global warming has the potential to impact on the very process that creates energy and ultimately sustains all life on earth, photosynthesis. Instead of Enviro News readers being informed about climate science, we are asked to believe that militarism and the Anzacs were actually good for the environment. Really? John Glazebrook, Endeavour Hills.

AS our national day of remembrance, Anzac Day will be commemorated by us soon, I thought it might be timely to share with you a little history of this special day. Originally, 25 April every year was to honour the members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (Anzac) who fought at Gallipoli against the Ottoman Empire in World War I. It has since become a national day of remembrance for all Australians and New Zealanders who have served and died in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. In 1915, Australian and New Zealand forces formed part of an allied expedition that set out to capture the Gallipoli Peninsula, which was according to a plan by Winston Churchill, to open the way to the Black Sea for the Allied navies. Upon arrival at Gallipoli on 25 April, the Anzacs met a fierce resistance from the Ottoman Army, which was commanded by Mustafa Kemal (later known as Ataturk). Whilst the objective was to capture Constantinople and give the allied forces a strategic advantage in its fight against Germany, the allies reached a stalemate and after an eight-month campaign, were evacuated, during which time both sides suffered heavy casualties, including 8709 Australians and 2721 New Zealanders giving their lives for our countries. This campaign bequeathed an intangible and powerful legacy, which has later become known as Anzac Legend and is often described as being the moment of birth of the nationhood of Australia and New Zealand. Perhaps equally remarkable was the sense of spirit shown by the then leader of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, with the words that were delivered to the first Australians, New Zealanders and British people to visit the Gallipoli battlefields in 1934. The words have since been inscribed in a monolith at Anzac

Dream job for James

Thinking of enrolling your child at Mary MacKillop School in 2018?

He has barely taken off his crew’s ‘Lego Movie’-inspired orange vest. His obsession started with a small helicopter given to him as a fifth birthday gift. It’s blossomed into Ninjago, Nexo Knights and Batman.

For his birthday, James’s father once built a ramp for James and his friends to race their Lego cars. By chance, the Lego Batman movie’s recent opening co-incided with his parents’ wedding anniversary. So mum and dad took out both kids to a gold class screening that night. “It was phenomenal!” James said.

You could say ‘everything is awesome’ for an 11-year-old Lego fanatic from Berwick who has landed his dream job. James is one of 12 children to have won a spot on the Creative Crew at the Legoland Discovery Centre, winning a year’s free pass to the newlyconstructed fantasy-land at Chadstone shopping centre. Already, he’s had an exclusive road-test of the centre’s giddy mix of attractions and 1.5 million-plus blocks. And he’s an enthusiastic fan of all of it, including interactive rides with laser pointers, a 4D cinema and a mini-Melbourne made of Lego blocks. In his 30-second video pitch for his spot on the crew, James breathlessly describes himself as “your biggest fan”. “I was born for Lego,” he said. “I breathe Lego and my life literally revolves around Lego.” As part of his ‘duties’, James will help show kids around at the centre’s grand opening on 18 April. He savoured the engineering challenges - such as building a car out of blocks to race down a timed track, or making structures to withstand a simulated earthquake. He raved about the 4D cin-

CFA woes aired

SPECIAL

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Alarms at Narre Warren North CFA brigade have been running hot. Since 2011, emergency call outs have nearly doubled from 164 calls a year to 299 mainly due to urban growth, the brigade’s captain Mark Dobrich says. During a recent visit by Deputy Premier James Merlino, Mr Dobrich pitched the case for more firefighting appliances and car parking at the fully volunteer 70-year-plus brigade. Mr Merlino - also Emergency Services Minister - fielded questions about the protracted negotiations over the CFA’s structure and its impact on the brigade’s volunteers. Mr Dobrich talked up the

value of volunteer firefighters to see risks, problems and solutions that professional “career firefighters” cannot. “Volunteers are also well trained and disciplined, but the volunteer provides something else -diversity. “In the volunteer ranks of any CFA brigade, you not only have highly skilled, experienced and dedicated firefighters but you also have builders, doctors, plumbers, electricians, nurses, engineers, IT specialists. “It is this diversity of skill, knowledge and experience that is the true strength of the volunteer brigade and of the organisation that is CFA.” The brigade’s two trucks - a tanker and a pumper - were adequate for now, but were under

increasing demand from outer suburbia, Mr Dobrich said. “This demand is expected to increase as the area continues to grow.” The town - embedded in rural and bush landscapes - was also at significant fire risk, as illustrated by Black Saturday. Mr Dobrich was satisfied the 40-strong volunteer brigade had enough members, but its parking area was likely to be “squeezed” by a planned duplication of Narre Warren North Road. “Our numbers give us capacity to respond to the (urban) growth. “The issue is around the growth of the area. It affects the ability of people to get to the station and where we’re going to park.”

Faye Axford and Michael Madden with portraits and medals of Thomas Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Axford and Albert Jacka. 167192 stress from their war experience, Mr Payne said. Indeed, Mr Axford had been treated for shell-shock and for shrapnel wounds in the two years of service before his heroic VC-awarded act in July 2018. In the Australian War Memorial tribute, Mr Axford, on his own, attacked an enemy machine-gun position with just bombs and bayonet during the World War I Battle of Hamel in northern France. He killed 10 German troops and captured six, before the platoon joined his advance. In some quarters, the successful attack by Australian and US troops at Le Hamel was regarded as the turning point of the war. “I must have been mad,” Mr Axford reportedly later said of his courageous act. On the flight back from the

1983 London visit - “on this side of Dubai” - Mr Axford died. Aboard the plane was Mr Payne, who informed cabin staff and organised for a message to be sent to Queen Elizabeth II. At Singapore airport, military and police cars assembled around the plane as Mr Axford’s body was disembarked. One of Mr Payne’s sons then escorted the body to Perth. “There’s the story of the Victoria Cross family - of what we do for each other,” Mr Payne told the event. On finishing his story, Mr Payne presented Albert Jacka VC’s replica medals to Faye Axford - who is a great-niece by marriage to Mr Jacka. They had been mounted and encased by the Victoria Cross book author Michael Madden. In front of an audience including

It was a sharp-eyed customer at a Berwick bank that first led Faye Axford into the embrace of the Victoria Cross ‘family’. Ms Axford, of Endeavour Hills, was simply told by the customer Bill Rogers as he held up a Berwick News front page in March: “You need to ring this guy”. The article was on Berwick author Michael Madden, who is well into his epic search for relatives of Australia’s 100 Victoria Cross awardees. Since Ms Axford gave Mr Madden a call, she has been interviewed for the book to talk about her two heroic ancestors Thomas ‘Jack’ Axford VC and Albert Jacka VC. If not for that call, she was unlikely to have had a chance meeting with one of the last people to see her great-uncle ‘Jack’ Axford alive. It was at a fund-raiser for Mr Madden’s VC book project at the Shrine of Remembrance in March when VC recipient Keith Payne revealed his link to ‘Jack’ to a captivated audience. Mr Payne told how he sat down to “have a yarn” with ‘Jack’ during a gathering of Victoria Cross and St George Cross medallists feted by the English Royal Family in London in 1983. The pair bonded closely over a “great long conversation” in the Union Jack Club as Mr Axford’s two sons took in the sights of London. “I heard more about the First World War from Jack than ever,” Mr Payne told his audience. “We sat and talked as two soldiers like I’ve never spoken before.” Both of them had post-traumatic

five families of Victoria-Cross recipients, it was as if Ms Axford had been ordained as part of the greater ‘family’. “Words can’t express what I’m feeling at the moment,” Ms Axford said. “This is just a surreal feeling to meet you.” Next year, she plans to tour Le Hamel, the scene of Lance-Corporal Axford’s awarded heroism and exactly 100 years after the event. “He won the Victoria Cross for saving the 15th Battalion,” she said. “I’m just so proud to be an Axford,” she said. In his labour of love, Mr Madden is compiling stories and photos to portray the real people behind the medals for his book The Victoria Cross: Australia Remembers. All but 96 are deceased. Mr Madden feels no Victoria Cross recipient “disappears into the ether” because they all look out for one another. Yet Australia was also at a bit of a knife-edge, he said. “The Victoria Cross has moved from having living recipients to memory. “Now we are moving to the stage where we don’t have the people to remember them - and it is moving to legend.” All proceeds from his book The Victoria Cross: Australia Remembers go to the charity Totally and Permanently Incapacitated Veterans’ Association. Anyone who can help with information for Michael Madden’s book, can call him on 0418 900 204 or email michael@berwickmilitarymedals.com.au.

Soccer gets a spruce-up By Cam Lucadou-Wells Berwick City Soccer Club has been heartened by Casey Council plans for a revamp of its cramped changerooms, inadequate parking and water-logged pitches. In a report on 18 April, the council’s officers concluded a new pavilion at Jack Thomas Reserve, Narre Warren North needed to be built to meet the required standards. The report stated the reserve’s entrance road and car parking area would also be upgraded under Casey’s draft capital works program. Funding and timing of the projects were “subject to council adoption”, the report stated. The club’s previously waterlogged pitch one had its turf oversown with rye-grass from late 2016, with future drainage and turf works coming on pitch two “subject to council approval”. Two floodlight poles will be upgraded in the 2016-'17 financial year, the report stated. The council is also seeking funding for a synthetic pitch at

Berwick City’s second home at Sweeney Reserve, as well as similar pitches at Gleneagles Secondary College and Casey Fields Regional Soccer Complex. After years of lobbying including a recent petition of 800plus signatures, Berwick City club president Joe Di Iorio said the club was buoyed by recent positive meetings with Casey officers and councillors and Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan. “We are expecting council to approve the design of a master plan for Jack Thomas Reserve in the 2017-'18 budget with construction the following year.” Mr Di Iorio said the club the largest of its kind in Casey - continued to grow beyond 800 members and 50 teams. He welcomed the advance of female-friendly changerooms as part of the project. “The commitment and support from all parties is very welcome news and will hopefully address the current and future needs of all the people that uti-

lise the facility.” In August, club members told Star News they were “fed up” with the “circa-1980s” clubrooms with a shortage of toilets and unheated changerooms divided by a temporary screen for home and away teams. A new pavilion had been listed on Casey’s 2014-'15 capital works program but had since “disappeared” from the list, the club claimed. Training was often shifted and games were being cancelled from the reserve’s junior pitches due to unplayable goalmouths being under water due to a lack of drainage. On Saturdays, many spectators battle for a lack of designated sealed parking spaces. Invariably, in wet conditions, some cars require a tow out of the spongy grassed areas. Councillor Rosalie Crestani told an 18 April council meeting that the reserve needed a “lot of upgrades”. She said MP Mr Donnellan would seek state funding for the works.

A Narre Warren South family has been refused compensation by Casey Council after a large branch from a nature-strip tree smashed their car’s windscreen outside a school. Dyllon Juriansz was collecting his son from school on Strathaird Drive on 15 March when the branch dropped on his parked car. It blocked traffic across the road, requiring several men to heave it off the car. Mr Juriansz was firstly thankful he and his son weren’t injured by the branch-fall. Then he was surprised that Casey Council - through an independent assessor - rejected his claim for a new windscreen. Without windscreen cover

on his car insurance, he was left out of pocket. “As residents we are so often reminded that the nature-strip is the property of council ... and council will care for your street tree. “All I can say is that Casey Council certainly weren’t doing their job of caring for the tree that smashed my windscreen.” Mr Juriansz said it was therefore contradictory of the council to “shirk responsibility” for the damage. “I am not suggesting that council workers should be running around Casey inspecting every tree in the municipality that’s ridiculous to say the least. “I simply want to warn fellow residents and highlight how typical for Casey Council

to ‘pass the buck’ and shirk responsibility yet again.” Casey Council didn’t comment on the specifics of the matter. Its city presentation manager David Richardson said the council endeavoured to provide a safe “local street environment” through inspection and maintenance of roads, footpaths, drains and trees. Nature-strip trees were inspected and remedially maintained on a three-yearly cycle, Mr Richardson said. “Council assesses claims once the relevant documentation has been received. “It is advisable for claimants to first deal with their insurance company who will then follow the matter up with council.”

Kids made their mark Kids made their stamp at a badge-making workshop at Hampton Park Youth Info Centre during the April school holidays. Reading all about it at Sharon’s street library By Helena Adeloju Sharon Edwards’ dream of starting her own library began when she saw an ABC story about street libraries on television. She was inspired to start a library in Nestle Street in Berwick “to get people reading” and to get to know her neighbours. The library has only been open for two weeks, but Ms Edwards said it had generated a lot of interest. She began her library by stocking a variety of books including a section for children. “People can borrow, swap or keep a book,” she said. “There are no rules.” Ms Edwards said that living across the street from a park there are always a lot of people going by but the library had given her the opportunity to meet some of them. “If I see anyone at the library, I pop out and have a chat,” she said. “I’ve met so many people in the past week.” Ms Edwards was thrilled to be able to have her library made locally. “I had it made through the Cardinia Men’s Shed,” she said. Ms Edwards is enjoying her new library venture so much that she is encouraging other people to do the same. “I’m the only street library in 30km, so there is a lot of room for others to start their own library,” she said. Street libraries have been popping up all over Melbourne for a number of years, each with the distinct character of its librarian and a unique story of it was built. Street Library Australia has two aims, to encourage literacy and encourage community. For more information visit the website: streetlibrary.org.au

Hop to it for frogs By Casey Neill Frogs are flourishing throughout Casey. Melbourne Water is calling on residents to leap into action and help to keep an eye on them. With the City of Casey, it hosted a Frogs of Casey walk and talk in Hallam on Wednesday 12 April. “That’s really going to showcase the frog species they can find in the area,” Melbourne Water Waterwatch co-ordinator James Frazer said beforehand. He also taught attendees to use their phones to identify and report frogs, and create frog-friendly habitat in their own back yard. “Frogs in Casey are quite diverse

- you can find 14 of Melbourne’s 16 species there,” Mr Frazer said. “From creeks to wetlands and patches of bushland, Casey’s a great area for frogs. “You’ve got a really rare frog the southern toadlet. “That species is a really fascinating frog that I’ll be telling people a bit more about on the night.” He said that most frogs in Melbourne called in spring, but the southern toadlet called in autumn. “Now’s a great time for people in Casey to get out and try to hear the calls of this frog. “The frog is distributed all over Casey.” To catch a glimpse - or hear a

croak - from the amphibians he recommended heading out to local patches of bushland and wetlands, “areas that get inundated by rain in autumn”. “One of the best ways they can help frogs is to get involved in Melbourne Water’s frog census program,” he said. “It’s been running for 16 years now and is a community-led citizen science program to monitor frogs. “That helps us understand where the frogs are in Casey and what species are out there. “Last year we launched a new frog census app.” Phone users can download the app free of charge and has led to an increase in frog recording.

“We had about 18 months’ worth of frog reports come in in three weeks,” Mr Frazer said. He urged Casey residents with an interest in frogs to consider reducing chemical use in their garden, controlling their pets and getting involved in friends and Landcare groups. The Frogs of Casey event will run from 6.30pm to 8.30pm at the Hallam Scout Hall, Gunns Road, Hallam, on Wednesday 12 April. Bring sturdy shoes, a torch and weather-appropriate clothing. Call 131 722 to book a place. Visit www.melbournewater.com. au/frogcensus to get involved with frog monitoring.

The apple of educator eyes Young children will be the centre of attention at Apple Blossoms Early Learning’s free open day on Saturday, 29 April, from 10am to 2pm. The Narre Warren-based childcare and kindergarten service, owned and operated by four families, is opening its doors to the community to celebrate the completion of renovations and official launch of its huge new, nature-based adventure playground for under-fives. Free family fun will be the order of the day, with a range of interactive games and activities on offer including aerial silks, art and craft, face painting and, of course, getting close to nature on the fully landscaped playground made of all natural materials. Children will have a ball playing in the tepee, bamboo tunnel and wonky spine of the playground, pumping water into the rocky river bed or relaxing in a low hammock under a tree, while their parents can chat with the owners and educators, take a guided tour or sample delicious morsels from the chef-prepared menu. “Since taking over two years ago, we’ve completely transformed the inside and outside of the centre, including building one of the largest, nature-based adventure playgrounds in the City of Casey,“ said Deb Reuben, operations manager and one of the centre’s owner operators. “Because the centre is tucked in behind La Porchetta restaurant just off Princes Highway, many people do not realise we are here. “The open day is a way of introducing Apple Blossoms Early Learning to the local community and giving families an insight into our unique learning environment.“ True to its namesake, Apple Blossoms Early Learning is dedicated to nurturing the mental, physical and emotional wellbeing of children, so they blossom into healthy and happy individuals. “Our educational program is based on the three philosophical pillars of wholesome nutrition, inquiry-based learning and nature-based play,“ Deb said. “The curriculum draws on the Reggio Emilia and Montessori models, where children learn at their own pace and develop a strong sense of who they are and how they fit into the world around them through stimulating experiences and sensory-rich environments. “That’s why each of our centres has a custombuilt nature play space, incorporating natural materials that spark curiosity, inspire creativity and encourage social interaction.” To find out more about the open day event or Apple Blossoms Early Learning, call the centre on 8794 9244. Apple Blossoms Early Learning is at 10-16 Verdun Drive, Narre Warren.

Indiana was born at 36 weeks at St John of God Berwick Hospital. location in Berwick as well. With the hospital’s spacious, light-filled private rooms promoting calm, peace and wellbeing, expectant parents will be spoilt with large modern en suite facilities and in-built accommodation for partners. A spa bath will also be available during and after delivery. There will also be a focus on access to fresh air and outdoor spaces with a large balcony area for new and expecting parents. If that wasn’t enough, the daily happy hour with beverages and a variety of cakes, pastries, soft cheeses and biscuits will help support parents in those first few days. But it won’t be just the parents and babies who will be

well cared for in the new location, St John of God Berwick Hospital will also host a children’s playground for siblings and young visitors to keep them entertained when the arrival and excitement of a new family member starts to lose its appeal. The St John of God Berwick Hospital’s new location is set to open in late 2017. Anyone who has any questions about the redevelopment or who would like some information on the new maternity services being offered can visit sjog.org.au/berwickredevelopment or email info.berwick@ sjog.org. For update information, follow St John of God Berwick Hospital on Facebook and Instagram.

On the eve of Wear Green for Premmies Day, St John of God Berwick Hospital welcomed a gorgeous little girl born at 36 weeks. Even though her parents may not have been ready for her unexpected entry into the world, the hospital was indeed well equipped for Indiana’s early arrival. Given that St John of God Berwick Hospital has a level two special care nursery on site with eight consultant paediatricians who work in rotation and are on call 24 hours a day, premature babies born from about 34 weeks onward and weighing 1700 grams can expect to be well cared for by the hospital’s qualified staff. Although premature birth remains a major source of getting some extra special attention from St John of God Hospital staff, it’s not the only one. Babies who might be experiencing breathing difficulties, jaundice, low blood sugar levels or temperature instability could also require the expertise of the hospital’s highly trained medical professionals. Following the birth of a baby at St John of God Berwick Hospital, parents can be rest assured that they and their babies are in good hands. Soon babies will be delivered in a state-of-the-art maternity ward at the new Kangan Drive

Classic pattern of skin cancer To avoid skin cancers it is best to avoid wearing singlet tops, according to Dr Mike Inskip at Sun Patrol. “In late summer we see many folks coming in for skin checks who have a classic singlet pattern, heavy tan on the

trunk and arms,” Dr Inskip said. “We also see a disproportionate amount of skin cancers in the very same distribution on the skin. “If you want to avoid skin cancers I would strongly advise wearing long-sleeve shirts (ide-

ally Lycra rash tops) outdoors.” The Sun Patrol Skin Cancer Clinic is at 48 Van Der Haar Avenue, Berwick. For more information, visit www.sunpatrolscc.com.au or call 9769 3358.

Cup debut for Destanee By Russell Bennett Narre Warren’s Destanee Aiava continues to take the tennis world by storm, with the 16-year-old named by Australian captain Alicia Molik to make her Fed Cup debut against Serbia this weekend. It marks just the latest chapter in a meteoric rise for Aiava, who is one of world tennis’ most impressive young talents. She announced her arrival on the global stage at the Brisbane International in January. Having defeated three higherranked opponents to qualify for the prestigious WTA Premier event, she went on to survive a nerve-wracking overnight rain delay to win her first round match against American Bethanie Mattek-Sands. Aiava was then awarded a wildcard into the senior draw of the Australian Open - becoming the first player born this century to compete in a Grand Slam. Molik said she was “delighted” to name Aiava alongside Daria Gavrilova, Ash Barty, and Casey Dellacqua for the must-win tie against Serbia. “We all saw Destanee’s talent and determination during the Aussie summer and I’m really looking forward to seeing her blossom and develop as

she matures into a professional tennis player,” Molik said. She may seem shy and unassuming away from the court, but Destanee sure lets her power-packed game do all the talking on it. While her incredible physical fitness is a major asset, she describes her mental strength as the biggest key. “That side is just as strong as the physical for me," she told the Gazette in an extended interview a little over 18 months ago. And mum Rosie agrees. “They both go hand-in-hand - her coach changed her game to just improve the base of it and work on a few technical things like getting her timing right,” she added. The youngster is already known for her tireless work ethic and drive to succeed. When the Gazette first spoke with Aiava way back in 2012, she explained that she pinned a list of goals on the fridge and ticked them off one-by-one as she accomplished them. On that list with a bullet - “Become world number one”. Australia will take on Serbia in their World Group II playoff at the Kristalna Dvorana Sports Hall in Zrenjanin, Serbia on 22 and 23 April. The tie will be broadcast live on the Seven Network.

Demons fade away in third quarter disappointment By Nick Creely VFL REVIEW - ROUND 1 It was hard-fought but not to be for the Casey Demons down at Burbank Oval on Easter Monday, with Williamstown defeating the visitors by 24-points. It was all the Dees early, who converted their first major of the season via an excellent contested mark by Bayley Fritsch, before Angus Scott kicked two early goals and Cam Pedersen snagged a major, giving the Dees a seven point advantage at quarter-time. But the Seagulls hit back hard through some stellar transition of play, hitting the scoreboard regularly to take back the lead at half-time by 8 points. The Demons faded out of the contest in the third, with the Seagulls making the most of some costly turnovers in their forward half to fly out to a 31 point lead heading into the last change. But despite some fight in the lastterm, the Demons were simply unable to penetrate the plucky Seagulls’ defensive unit, foraying plenty of inside 50 entries to claim an impressive victory. With 12 AFL listed players turning out for the Demons on Monday, in comparison to the Gulls who are not affiliated with an AFL club, there was very little excuse for the third-term fadeout. The two most impressive playmakers for the Dees were experienced AFL pair Michael Hibberd (25 disposals), who crossed over from Essendon after 84 games, and former co-captain Jack Trengove (33 disposals, six tackles and a goal), who battled hard as an insidemidfielder.

vantage in the clearances - with Jake Spencer in for AFL duties due to the injury of Max Gawn, Nick Meese feasted on an inexperienced and makeshift ruck combination. The Dees will look to claim their first victory of the season on Saturday night when they take on North Ballarat at Casey Fields from 7pm. The Roosters themselves are coming off an embarrassing 188 point hiding to Richmond on Easter Sunday, and will be looking to improve. In the Development League, the Demons defeated the Gulls by 11 points, with Todd Vander Haar impressive in a best-on-ground performance, while Aaron Cotte and Liam Hiscock were also among the best.

Demons coach Justin Plapp praised

Hibberd and Trengove for their impact on the contest and their ability to fight through tough pre-seasons with injury, and hinted both are chances to be lining up in the senior team next week. “He (Hibberd) looked good out there. He got through the game well and was up around full game time,” he said.

135-point thrashing By David Nagel Doveton full-forward Taylor Joyce has upstaged former Melbourne stars Russell Robertson and Daniel Ward with an 11-goal haul in the Doves mightily impressive 135-point victory over Hampton Park on Good Friday. Joyce ran rampant in the first half, kicking four in the first quarter and three in three minutes at the start of the second, heading to half time with nine on the board. Only the great work of Hampton Park youngster, CJ Layfield, kept things in check in the second half. A big crowd turned out at Robert Booth Reserve to see if Robertson and Ward could bring some competitiveness to a side that has won just four of its last 84 outings. The answer -well it was an emphatic no! The Redbacks were too loose at the stoppages in the first half -ball huntingallowing the likes of Michael Henry, Sam Raru, Nick Battle and Lachie Batten to take full advantage of Russell Gabriel’s dominant form in the ruck. Gabriel monstered hard-working but ill-equipped types like Heath Peach, Aaron Holden and Tom Marshall to provide his midfield with a feast of Easter goodies. The Doves led by six goals at quarter time, 82 points at the half, before entering the last term with an 89-point lead. Joyce and Gabriel were outstanding for the Doves while Henry added four goals to five against Officer from round one. Layfield, Josh Craig and Jackson Philpin were best for the Redbacks.

This week’s match of the day sees Beaconsfield travel to Fox Road to take on Narre Warren. The Eagles defeated the Magpies by 13 points in last year’s first semifinal. The Magpies seem to have better balance this season, with brothers Jack and Matt Soroczynski and Jack Wheeler have tremendous pace off half back, feeding off bullocking types like Michael Collins, Dylan Quirk and Hayden Stagg. Nick and Stewie Scanlon have added depth to the front half, while Jayden Bubb is providing a giant figure in the ruck. He faces the ultimate challenge this week against three-time Norm Walker Medallist Scott Meyer. The Magpies should get the points on their home deck. In other games, Officer will look for its first victory at Toomuc Reserve this millennium when it makes the short trip to take on Pakenham. And, on face value, the Kangaroos would appear to have the better form line. They have matched motors with both Doveton and Narre Warren over the first two rounds of the season before a 15-minute lapse in concentration cost them dearly. Cory Phillips and Mat Jones have dimmed the focus on regular midfielders like Chris Larosa, Blair Allan and Ben Tivendale, while Andrew Dike and Luke Nunan have given James Waldon a huge chop-out down back. But just what confronts them this weekend. The Lions have signed Jayden

The Stingrays sit 2-1 after an inconsistent start to the Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS season. 166487 players who played in the Vic Country trial game, so most of our squad will continue to play over the break, so the workload won’t really drop off as such.” The Rays are likely to be heavily affected in their pursuit of a TAC Cup premiership with the likelihood that up to 10 youngsters will be in the Vic Country squad at the National Championships within the next few months - a positive as a whole but a potential to derail their season. “It’s going to be a tough scenario, that’s why getting wins early this season are so important - Oscar Clavarino, Hunter Clark, Luke Davies, Tom De Koning, Bailey Williams, Mitch

Riordan and Sam Fletcher are expected to play Vic Country, and potentially Bailey Morrish could also play in the Vic Country side,” Cox said. But that just means that there are more opportunities for their lesser experienced kids, with some impressive names already showing they have what it takes to step up to the level. “Mitch Cotter in the midfield has been fantastic - he’s probably been our most consistent player in the first three matches - Ali Zijai is a good player, and Mason DeWit is a really superb kid, those types will obviously need to step up in the absence of the leaders,” Cox said.

Effort and intensity is likely to be the theme at training for the Dandenong Stingrays this week after a wobbly and at times inconsistent start to the season. With the TAC Cup enjoying a week off due to the Easter break, the Rays sit in sixth spot with a 2-1 record, and despite being a promising attacking side, they sit in the bottom-four for points conceded (280). Starting the season with a solid first-up win against Gippsland Power, the Rays were dismantled by a slicker, bigger and more professional Geelong Falcons side by more than 12 goals before scraping over the line an inconsistent win over the Greater Western Victoria Rebels by 20 points. Assistant Coach Nick Cox said there are things that need to be worked on over the break to ensure the team remains competitive and gets the best out of themselves, but also remains wary of over-working the players. “If we get beat in a contest by a bigger and better opponent, then so be it, but it’s just effort that we want - there’s a couple of things we need to do before we play Sandringham,” he said. “We want the kids to play well for as long as they can right now that inconsistency is there, but at the same time it is a development program. “A lot of our players have had a pretty heavy workload so far and we have to be wary of that - we’ve got about 13

 Reviews and news…

Renault’s tweak and sparkle By Vani Naidoo, Marque Motoring Renault has spruced up the design of this fourth-generation Megane, dropped the price and tweaked the drive in the hope it will resonate more strongly with Australian buyers. To help combat the perception that French cars cost a mint to maintain Renault Australia is offering the Megane with a five year unlimited kilometres warranty and full roadside assist and capped price servicing for three years. Standard inclusions feature keyless entry and push button start, 7.0-inch touchscreen, Alcantara leather trim upholstery, dual-zone climate control, auto headlights and wipers as well as sat nav, park assist and privacy glass. The Premium Pack ($1990) adds the 8.7-inch portrait screen, full LED headlights and a Bose sound system. The GT sits low and wide on its 18-inch alloys, with curvy hips, sporty nose and sculpted flanks hinting at the fun that can be had. A sharp LED headlight design, chrome and silver highlights and dual exhaust tips complete a distinctive, edgy look that sets it apart from competitors. The Megane GT boasts an airy, well-appointed cabin with the black and blue sport-style bucket seats offering the comfort and support you need for a spot of energetic driving. The blue is echoed in the contrast

stitching on the steering wheel, in the ambient lighting, as a backdrop to the instrumentation and in the tint of the carbon fibre trim too, which not only lifts the ambience of the cabin but also gives it an air of the different. However, the soft touch plastics and top-notch finishing sit alongside cheaper, easily marked materials and tardy shortcuts in adapting the European car to a right-hand drive market. The optional 8.7-inch portrait touchscreen in our test car dominated the dash, looking completely at home in the sleekly integrated design. It is responsive and offers good graphics quality but is not as intuitive as units that mirror the smartphone software we have become so accustomed to. Megane GT is equipped with six airbags, traction and stability control and reverse camera with front and rear sensors. Surprisingly, there is not autonomous emergency braking or adaptive cruise control in Australian models yet. Decent mid-range torque helps it along and it certainly doesn’t feel hesitant when you ask the question. Unfortunately, the steering wheel paddles are oddly shaped and are not really comfortably placed with the gearbox’s penchant to shift up automatically if you try to hold on to a lower gear also detracting from the experience.

MODEL RANGE 2017 Renault Megane GT from $38,490 (plus on-road costs).

Renault has spruced up the design of this fourth-generation Megane GT. The new suspension set-up gives its more control and agility, while the nifty 4Control four-wheel steering improves flexibility and handling, allowing it to duck into corners easily and giving it stability while travelling at high speeds. Below 60km/h the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction to the front, making the car feel better balanced and supporting quick changes of direction, and pretty handy for parking, too. The GT is sure footed and fairly comfortable over bumps and ruts, niggling a bit but not enough to irritate,

but cabin noise can be a bit loud on coarse bitumen. At 434 litres the boot is pretty handy, deep enough to hold the weekly shop along with a schoolbag or two. Lodgings for rear seat passengers are comfortable enough provided you limit it to two and adults will find their knees touching the seats in front. There are air vents back there and handy map pockets, two Isofix points, the middle armrest and door bins deep enough to be useful. Not so useful are the front cup hold-

ers. They are oddly sized and not deep enough to hold that much-needed takeaway coffee without a degree of precariousness. Renault claims a combined fuel economy of six litres per 100 kilometres and although ours was closer to 7.2 litres/100km during our week, that did include more short spirited drives than long trips. With classy good looks and a responsive involving drive, the Renault Megane GT is one to consider. Competitive pricing, an excellent warranty and an expanding dealership network also add to the allure. This is a fun car, not without its idiosyncrasies, mind you, but we love the French for that.
