THE LATEST IN FOOD
Some of you may know that this is my last week with Noosa Today. I started here as an intern four years ago. I’m proud to have worked alongside a list of strong, inspirational women and to have engaged with a wide range of thought-provoking community members who have taught me to listen, understand and show compassion. I’ve made mistakes, upset many, got on my high horse, and learnt a lot. I’ve written about “pillaging lakes”, those damn bats, the dumping of poop in the river and way too many drink drivers. I’ve received threats and compliments, been asked which toilet roll I pulled my degree from and told I should get back in my box. But I cannot lie; I have loved every minute of it. I’m stepping over into real estate writing now, so you’re not rid of me completely. But this is a moment to say thank you to Star News Group for believing in me. Thank you to my editor for allowing me free rein to follow stories we believed important to the community. Thank you to my workmates for being my moral compass and sounding board and most importantly, thank you to every person who reads our paper. You’re the reason I have always come back for more. ● Jolene Ogle

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT… HONOURED AT ANZAC DAWN
As the first rays of light and the warmth push away the darkness in Tewantin, a community remembers.
“Their name liveth for evermore” rang true as men, women and children gathered around the cenotaph to pay their respects in Tewantin early on Tuesday morning. The Noosa Navy cadets and ex-servicemen gathered at dawn to remember the mateship, the agony, the courage and the companionship of war service. Tewantin Noosa RSL Sub-branch president Mick Reid offered a haunting reminder to those of us waiting in the darkness to remember those who have fought and fallen. “We await for the first rays of light and the warmth to push away the darkness,” he said. The service came to an emotional Last Post and Reveille, sounded by the bugle of Elliot Rowely, and many remained to pay respects. The sombre gathering was laced with pride and a sense of connection between servicemen, their families and those who have loved or lost. Lest we forget. ●
FOOTPATH BUILD-UP A SIDE ISSUE FOR JUNK CLEAN-UP Council’s much-loved kerbside clean-up is back, but the chance to clean out junk is causing chaos on some shire streets. The Noosa Community Notice Board Facebook page spun into a frenzy when Tewantin resident Stacey said she didn’t mind people picking from her pile of unwanted rubbish, if they would just clean up after themselves. “Please remember if you are taking items, leave everything in a neat pile on people’s lawns. I had everything boxed up and just came home to find half the boxes taken and the contents tipped out all over the place,” she said. “I’ve even had to put notes on the garbage bags telling people not to rip them all open, it’s just rubbish inside them.” The promised return of the Noosa kerbside clean-up was an election winning platform when local council was returned to Noosa, but it seems the free collection isn’t free from issues. Pat Isaacs said during last year’s clean-up he had people from the Sunshine Coast Council adding their rubbish to the pile out the front of his home. “I came home one day to find several boxes and a tatty old armchair,” he said. “I confronted another lot who pulled up and tried to dump stuff. They said ‘you don’t mind, surely?’ I stood there while
The kerbside clean-up has got some residents hot under the collar. they loaded it back up, after suggesting I would pay for their laziness in my council rates.” A 2014 report by council’s waste coordinator Doug Barnes noted residents of other shires dumping their rubbish was a problem back then, along with residents dumping useful items that could be donated. Michiela Stonehouse offered a piece of advice for the community as the clean-up works through the seven-week timetable. “One person’s trash is another person’s treasure, just be respectful and use common sense,” she said. ●
PLANNING PUSH SETS ALL EYES ON FORESHORE It’s time for the community to have a say on the future use of the popular and much-loved Noosa River foreshore along Gympie Terrace in Noosaville. Council has begun community consultation this week, with work already underway for the master plan for the Gympie Terrace foreshore to guide how the area is used. Council’s property manager Clint Irwin said as the foreshore’s popularity continued to grow, it was important to strike a balance between recreational uses, commercial activities, events and community uses so that the “amenity of the Noosaville foreshore is retained for future generations”. “If we don’t get that balance right, we risk losing the character and charm that makes this much-loved community asset so special,” he said. Council has appointed consultant
Place Design Group to develop a land use master plan, in consultation with the community. Information ‘pop-ups’, workshops, and an online portal are among the ways the community will be able to have a say with the first round of consultation open this week. Mr Irwin said the master plan isn’t about redesigning the area, or making changes to the infrastructure along the foreshore, but rather managing uses in line with the community’s needs. “We’ll also be talking to commercial operators, jetty leaseholders, park users, the yacht club and various other stakeholder groups with an interest in this area,” he said. “The result will be a plan shaped by the community.” The Noosaville Foreshore Land Use Masterplan project has launched on council’s Your Say Noosa website yoursay.noosa.qld.gov.au ●

COVER STORY “This is David Rastovich’s Alaia. It has surfed Waiema Bay and Pipeline.“
BY HOLLIE HARRIS
W
TOM
WANTS ALL
ON BOARD
hen we think of board shapers, we often think of them as a little reclusive, keeping their skills close to their chests perhaps, but salt-of-the-earth shaper Tom Wegener is all about sharing; sharing the knowledge, sharing the excitement, sharing the waves and sharing the future of the board industry. Shaping boards in his loft at Cooroy for over a decade, Tom’s stoke for surfing and shaping is certainly not waning. If anything, the grin so synonymous with Wegener is growing bigger. Tom is always breaking new ground. His palpable passion for the sport and his boyish enthusiasm has resulted in forward thinking projects which continue to take surfing to the next level. First it was introducing finless surfing to the masses with his Alaia boards, next being the catalyst to finless becoming a part of the World Surfing League and now once again, Tom is on the cusp of a new surfing revolution with his use of cork. After visiting the ancient surfboards in Hawaii’s Bishop Museum, his board shaping took an unexpected turn. “I realised the amazing amount of craftsmanship that had gone into their finless wooden boards. I came home and began to make them out of Paulownia. This is a wood which doesn’t absorb salt water, which is still such a baffling concept to me,” Tom said. “Finding Paulownia meant that I was able to make boards just as the ancient Hawaiians did without all the problems they had trying to keep the water out of them. When I started making these there was not one finless surfboard in the world,” he said. These ‘Alaia’ boards became popular across the globe and before long, elders from Papua New Guinea contacted Tom about coming to help them with their traditional wooden boards. “The elders were concerned that the locals don’t surf wooden surfboards anymore. They just want foam surfboards they said and that there are a hundred kids and only a few boards to share. The traditional craft of making their wooden boards was disappearing. “They asked me to go and teach them how to update their wooden surfboards and I came across an enormous amount of balsa wood over there. We started making the boards out of the balsa and teaching them how to make them, so after three years or so, the locals were making really nice wood boards on their own.” The locals still had some questions about the validity of the wooden boards and were still heavily influenced to use the new style fibreglass boards. When the World Surfing League decided to take the contest to Papua New Guinea it was an opportunity for the locals to see the pros surfing the wooden boards convincingly.

From this came two incredible wins, a wooden board division became a part of the WSL contest and the locals saw wooden boards in a whole new light. “They didn’t have to rely on the foam boards donated to them over the years anymore. Seeing what could be done with the wooden boards inspired them. They realised that they could actually make these boards themselves, just like Papua New Guineans have done for centuries,” Tom’s approach to evolving surfing is about making it accessible to everyone. Not to simply sell boards himself, but to teach others how to make a living this way, keep traditions alive and to experiment. “I wanted to show them (Papua New Guineans) that this is how you can make a living off surfboards. You can actually make these boards and sell them yourselves now,” Tom said. Pro surfers were using them in Waimea Bay and with the help of friend Jacob Stuth, the Alaia revolution was well underway. They were salt water resistant and finless but there was room for improvement; they needed more flexibility and float. Tom creates boards from absolute scratch. His shaping shack is a bit like Tom himself, not at all pretentious humble and a little weathered but brimming with new projects, full of character and stories. There’s a lot of love in this space and you get the feeling that anything is possible here. Tom’s down to earth, joyful energy is in every room and he is passing it on to the next generation of shapers. Alongside Tom’s quest to improve the Alaia came his desire to learn and teach more. In discovering the use of cork in his boards, he began teaching locals how to make their own boards in the hope of keeping shaping alive. “I hope with the new process we are developing we can teach classes because I want to get people back into making surfboards again,” he said. “It’s very exciting because I have discovered the use of foam to give flex. By using foam in the middle, wood on the bottom and cork on the deck, the cork smashes into itself. When you glue the cork to the foam it never buckles and creases like a fibreglass board does. The flex is incredible on these boards.” The boards are soft in the rails and the wood underneath is very fast. Tom pushes on the two ends of this board while I wince in anticipation of snap. If this thing was fibreglass, it would have creased for sure, but instead it flexes perfectly and bounces back into shape. “It’s not waterproof, the cork, but I’ve learned if you have a layer of glass over foam, the water goes in and can’t get out again but if you have a porous covering the water just comes out again. It can dry,” he said. “With this type of flex, you can do great bottom turns. Through this process, we can start over again. We can do anything we want! It’s very exciting,” he grins. “Bringing in the cork has meant I can shape my finless surfboards with the right flex, get the right amount of float and they’re green. “I want to share this with people. I’m so excited to teach people how to make their own and how they do this

“I AM DEFINITELY AT THE EXTREME END OF THE SURFING RELATIONSHIP SPECTRUM – IMPULSIVE, HAVE TO SURF ALL THE TIME, ALWAYS WANTING TO LEARN MORE.”
Tom loves his belly boards. “That’s surfing to me. I love collecting these. I wanted to find out what IS surfing? For more than a hundred years it was belly boarding. Thousands of these old boards from the UK where made after WW1 and turned the ocean into a playground for the first time.“
“I’m making this board for Brian Ritchie from the Violent Femmes. After his show (on the coast recently) we sat and talked surfing. This 11ft board will go down to him to surf in Tasmania.“
chemical free in their own home and expand their own designs.” Tom gives massive accolades to his wife, Margie for being the catalyst for bringing teaching on a more permanent basis to the forefront of his career. “Margie really is instrumental in this. She has been so important to changing our business model to incorporate teaching. I’m pretty hapless at production, two or three boards a week is about all I can do, but teaching people is what I really enjoy. Within the year, my space will be expanded to become a quality space to teach people this craft.” The bonus of this invaluable opportunity to learn the art form is that when other surfboard factories have toxic chemicals and a huge amount of disposable waste, Tom’s factory has no toxic materials and creates almost no waste, earning him the Sunshine Coast Living Smart Glossie award for his factory in 2012. Learning to shape with Tom is about the whole big picture, so watch this
space for his future shaping classes. When he’s lured away from the foam by way of waves, Tom’s love for the ocean is contagious. You can’t help but get the stoke when you see the boyish grin on Tom’s face after a good surf and it reminds you what surfing is all about. Whether it’s on a bellyboard, a finless or a longboard, it’s all about good times. “It’s so much fun. Every different board, you are wearing a different hat. The wave is the same, but the board means your approach is so different. “I am definitely at the extreme end of the surfing relationship spectrum - impulsive, have to surf all the time, always wanting to learn more.” For the board shaping industry, Tom’s extreme relationship with surfing has meant that the next generation can continue to craft boards by hand and push the norm. He has become an intrinsic contributor to surfing’s evolution and plans to teach all he knows to anyone who wants to learn, that is unless the swell comes up. ●

NEWS SENTENCING DATE FOR HIT AND RUN
QLITE TECHNOLOGY FOR POLICE
More than a year after killing cyclist Stephen Small, Nathan Craig MacDonald has been handed a date for sentencing. Noosaville resident MacDonald pleaded guilty in March this year to dangerous driving causing death. In March 2016, Noosa Today reported the death of 42-yearold father Mr Small after he was struck by a ute in a drunken hit and run in Doonan. A memorial of an all-white bicycle was soon erected for the father and still stands along the roadside. MacDonald will be sentenced on 21 August. ●

Noosa Council will conduct a phone survey to gauge residents’ satisfaction with the service council provides from Thursday 27 April. Executive manager Deb Iezzi said residents’ feedback would help council improve the delivery of services and allow them to compare their performance against other local governments. Market Facts Pty Ltd will conduct the survey of 400 residents that will take about one and a half weeks. Council said there was no obligation to take part. ●
Noosa police will soon have new technology to help officers capture good order offences such as public urination and alcohol-fuelled violence as they happen. Acting Deputy Commissioner Paul Taylor said the new QOccurrences Good Order capability was currently being trialled on QLite devices in North Brisbane, Townsville and Cairns Safe Night Precincts. He said the new capability would be rolled out to other districts, including Noosa, from 1 July this year and will provide real-time, in-the-field access to timely and accurate information. The new technology will allow officers to issue banning notices and 'move on' directions on the spot, and update the Queensland Police Service’s records systems immediately instead of having to return to the station to document an offence and enter it into the QPS system. Mr Taylor said the reporting delay could mean that if another officer came across the same offender, they may be unaware of the offence they committed earlier that day. “Now both repeat and first-time offenders can be identified as well as processed on-the-spot,” he said. Good Order offences in Safe Night Precincts can include public urination, disorderly and offensive behaviours, public drunkenness, violent alcoholfuelled behaviours and damage to public property. ●

NEWS GREEN SUPPORT The Noosa and Hinterland Greens have offered their full support of the Protect Elanda group in their fight to stop development in the Noosa River. At a branch meeting last week, The Greens passed a motion to support the efforts of the group as well as urge the Queensland Greens to adopt a similar policy. Protect Elanda group member Noel Bird said the group stood by their concern that downgrading a fish habitat management level sets a “very dangerous precedent” but said they were not opposed in principal to “organised tourist visitation”. ●

ORANGE SKY KEEPS IT CLEAN Unitywater has today announced a $15,000 commitment to co-fund a new Orange Sky Laundry van to service Noosa, as well as Caboolture and the Sunshine Coast region. Orange Sky Laundry (OSL) is a free mobile laundry service for the homeless and travels throughout the region to help those sleeping rough wash their clothes and have a friendly chat with OSL operators. For the last six months, Orange Sky Laundry has operated a temporary laundry van on the Sunshine Coast, but the permanent van will enable the service to extend to Noosa and Caboolture. Unitywater’s contribution follows a large donation by a private donor and other funding from local councils and community groups, with the new van expected to be in use from early May. Unitywater community relations specialist Kate Cash said the van was a much-needed service for a growing community issue. “There has been significant demand for the Orange Sky Laundry in our communities, so it’s wonderful to be part of a permanent solution,” she said. “We are proud to join our councils to help provide a regular laundry service for those less fortunate.” 2016 Young Australians of the Year and cofounders of Orange Sky Laundry Nic Marchesi and Lucas Patchett said this was a fabulous testimony distribution of drugs in and around Rainbow Beach and Tin Can Bay. NEWS ROAD SAFETY GRANTS The latest round of grants to help community-based groups, schools and local government improve road safety have opened this week. Noosa MP Glen Elmes said grass-roots groups had until 26 May to submit applications for round six of the Queensland Government’s $8.4 million Community Road Safety Grants. “These grants provide an opportunity for local groups to address local issues and make a real difference to the safety of pedestrians and road users,” he said. “Community-based projects run by community members are a great way to tackle issues of concern to locals and last year the Noosa electorate benefited from close to $150,000 worth of Community Road Safety Grants. “The Rotary Club of Noosa used their grant to roll out young driver road safety education programs in 10 Noosa schools, Noosa Shire Council delivered cycle skills training to disadvantaged students in five schools, Noosaville and Tewantin State Schools also delivered cycle skills sessions and road safety education materials to Grade 4 and 5 students and not-for-profit ‘Murri’s on the Move Driving School’ received funding over three years to deliver their ‘A culture for safe driving program’.” For more information on how to apply for a Community Road Safety Grant, go to www.tmr.qld.gov. au/roadsafetygrants ●

Liz’s winning documentary image of marine life.
Tewantin photographer Liz Harlin has pocketed the title of Queensland’s top documentary photographer for 2017. More than 90 of Queensland’s best professional photographers gathered in Brisbane last night for the AIPP QLD Epson Professional Photography Awards presented at the Brisbane Racing Club. The awards are run annually in every state by the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP) - the country’s largest photographic membership body - and sponsored by Epson. The national president of the AIPP, Vittorio Natoli, says the awards represent the best of the best of professional photography in Australia. “These awards are a celebration of photographic excellence and represent the pinnacle of professional photography,” he says. A panel of experts then further anonymously assesses all category winners’ work to determine the overall state winner. Innovation, content, creativity, technical excellence and impact are the key criteria when the images are reassessed. TOO CLOSE? LEAKED EMAIL HITS AT NPA Fresh allegations of board stacking have been made against the Noosa Parks Association, an organisation that has long been the source of controversy within the shire. A leaked email from a former board member of the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation (NBRF) accuses the NBRF leadership of hand-picking Noosa Parks Association (NPA) members to fill vacancies within the NBRF board. The email states that the former director disagrees with the way the board is being managed, pointing specifically to the “current director’s decision to appoint to the board individuals who are representatives and leading members of particular interest groups”. The NBRF was established by Noosa Council in 2014 following the dissolution of the former management structure. The foundation has eight directors with the founding member, Noosa Council, having one director on the board, which according to council’s website, makes the arrangement “independent of council”. The author of the resignation email said they believed the foundation’s principals of neutrality and independence were in jeopardy. “Care was taken by the previous Noosa Council to ensure the foundation’s founding directors were a balanced group of independent individuals, not narrowly representative of just one ‘sector’ or special interest group,” the email said. The email was sent in May 2016 and, according to sources, in June 2016 the NPA president Michael Gloster and president of community-based environmental group the Noosa Community Biosphere Association (NCBA) Dick Barnes, who is also an NPA
Former mayor and honorary NPA life member Noel Playford. member, were both appointed to the NBRF Board of Directors. Both of these organisations are financially involved with NBRF, either through grants or joint funding of projects. The current NBRF board is made up of the NPA president Mr Gloster, Noosa Community Biosphere Association (NCBA) and NPA member Mr Barnes, long-
time NPA supporter and former NPA member Mayor Tony Wellington, NPA member Clare Cartwright, whose father Robert Cartwright is an honorary life member of the NPA, plus chair Campbell Corfe, David Dique and University Queensland director Karen Hussey. NBRF chair Campbell Corfe has also previously confirmed “a number of the board” looked at how former Noosa mayor and NPA member Noel Playford “could be re-engaged” with the board but agreed it would be “inappropriate” and “not the right thing for Mr Playford” to rejoin the foundation as a board member. Instead, Mr Corfe said the foundation would assign Mr Playford to a project this year so his “expertise is not wasted”. Noosa Today asked Mr Corfe if the appointment of leaders of special interest groups to the NBRF board was a conflict of interest. Mr Corfe said he believed everything was above board. “(In regards) to (a) conflict of interest policy, the foundation has been, and continues to be, meticulous in such matters of governance,” he said. “The foundation was privileged to have Mr Gloster and Mr Barnes join the board last year, long after arrangements for 2015/16 funding were established. “They, like the other directors, have complied with our internal policies requiring full disclosure. Further, we have regularly visited the conflict of interest policy at board discussions.” Mr Corfe declined to provide minutes from meetings or the annual general meeting that showed board members with a conflict of interest leaving the room for discussions. Mr Corfe also declined requests to supply a copy of the foundation’s conflict of interest policy.

Noosa Tutoring Centre
Every parent wants to have a child who is a confident reader and is able to decode unfamiliar words and deal with the exceptions to the rules of the language. Justine Kerz, owner of the Noosa Tutoring Centre, says the Keys to Reading Program, exclusive to the Centre, delivers the strategies for reading confidence. “The one-on-one sessions are tailored to the current strengths and needs of the individual student.” The uniqueness of the Keys to Reading program stems from its design which allows the student to realise the inconsistencies, and using the rules of the program deal with the exceptions. “The focal strategies are contained within reading, writing and comprehension activities. The program “links” these activities, one step at a time, building the student’s literacy skills,” Justine said. Keys to Reading is designed to engage students while they experience and enjoy their own progress.

TESTIMONIAL My son has been attending Noosa Tutoring Centre for just one term and the improvement in not only his reading and writing but his entire attitude to school and home life is amazing. He is a happier kid and he is much more confident. We had been to another tutoring centre last year and when we brought him to Justine we were worried it was going to be another waste of time, the school had even told us they couldn’t help our son. He is Year 2 and couldn’t recognise all the letters of the alphabet at the beginning of the year. He now knows all the letters and recognises the vowels, he can sound out words to read, spell and write and is reading at Level 4. He got his first ever class award just the other week! We could not be happier for him and praise the work of Justine and her teachers at Noosa Tutoring Centre.

Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington with NBRF chair Campbell Corfe at the 2016 Noosa Show. “We have a policy on conflict of interests, as well as other appropriate policies. I am not convinced an organisation such as the foundation should forward those policies to a newspaper,” he said. Mr Corfe said director profiles were available on the foundation’s website with “full details of their interests” and the foundation also maintains a “disclosure file” for each member including former directors. Mr Corfe declined to release the disclosure files. This isn’t the first time the NPA has been queried over its involvement in state or council-established environmental groups. In May 2007, Gympie MP David Gibson used parliamentary privilege to draw attention to the Teewah Beach-Cooloola Working Group’s “heavily Noosa-biased committee”. “By its very name, one would assume this group ... would have strong representation from Teewah Beach and the Cooloola Shire. Sadly, that is not the case.
Of the 14 members of the group, only one represents each of the local councils impacted ... and one represents the Teewah residents,” Mr Gibson said at the time. The Gympie Times reported the “Noosa Parks Association had more representation than Noosa and Cooloola Shire Councils put together”. The NPA has a long history with Noosa and has previously come under fire for other issues. In September 2013, Des Houghton of the Courier-Mail reported investigations were underway into the NPA’s deal with the State Government to turn two historic lighthouse cottages into “their own private holiday village”. “Members enjoy exclusive use of the Double Island Point cottages in return for weeding and catering,” Mr Houghton wrote. Mr Houghton also questioned the deal which gave the organisation control of the National Park visitor information kiosk, from which they were said to make an annual profit. “In his annual report to the Office of Fair Trading, association treasurer Mike MacDonald said the group was in a ‘healthy financial position’ with a net income of $57,114, including nearly $30,000 income from the visitors centre,” Mr Houghton said. In the same article and more recently, questions have also been raised about the NPA’s decision to fund local political campaigns. Disclosure documents from the Electoral Commission Queensland (ECQ) shows the NPA itself, as well as past and present NPA members have contributed $13,838 to Cr Wellington’s election campaigns since 2012. According to the documents, $10,838 was donated to Cr Wellington’s 2012 campaign made up of $1588.50 from Mr Playford, $1000 from 2012 NPA president Ian Seels, $1000 from current NPA president Mr Gloster, $5000 from the NPA itself, $2000 from Robert and Karen Cartwright and $250 from current
NPA committee member John Chester-Freeman. Financial support for Cr Wellington dwindled in the 2014 elections when he ran for council alongside Mr Playford, but in 2016, the same year Mr Playford retired, he again received $2000 from Mr Cartwright, $1000 from Mr Seels, and $250 from Mr ChesterFreeman. Cr Wellington said the NPA gifted $5000 to his 2012 election campaign because the organisation supported his “de-amalgamation platform”. “NPA, you may recall, were one of four organisations that came together as the Noosa Independence Alliance to promote Noosa’s independence from the amalgamated Sunshine Coast Council. I have not received any other gifts or donations from NPA,” he said. “Over three campaigns I have received funding from a range of individuals. Some may have been members of NPA and all were no doubt members of other community organisations and clubs.” Cr Wellington said he was no longer a member of the NPA nor “any community organisation” but under the Local Government Act (section 173, sub-section 3) “it is not conflict of interest for a councillor to be an ordinary member of a local club or group”. “Yes I have been a member of NPA. And I have also been a member of numerous other groups. But I relinquished my membership of all community groups some time back to ensure there were no perceived conflicts of interests with my role on council,” he said. “Again noting that it is not an actual conflict of interest to be a non-committee member of a community organisation under the Act.” Mr Gloster was contacted for comment and a list of questions were sent via email. Mr Gloster declined to comment, and instead provided the below statement. “As has been its practice for 55 years, NPA chooses not to comment on conspiracy theories,” he said. ●

"What's not to enjoy? We live and work in paradise. We don't see a winter and the beaches are some of the best in the world. It's clean, safe and full of wonderful people doing wonderful things." ●
Lucy Hamond
Lucy Hamond of Noosaville loves to travel. She’s just returned from six weeks in the UK and is happy to see the Noosa winter in. What did you love most about your trip to the UK? The location is brilliant. You are always just a long-weekend away from France, Spain, Holland, Ireland. It’s a bit of a traveller’s paradise for that reason. So many different cultures on the doorstep meant that skipping across to Paris for a few days was a fun change of scenery. Where has been your favourite travel destination so far? I always love Bali. Avoiding the crowded areas, I love the peaceful mountains there and rice fields. The Balinese are so gentle and always so grateful for what they have.

WHAT DOES SIMON CAVALLERI FROM PEREGIAN BEACH ENJOY MOST ABOUT LIVING IN OUR NOOSA SHIRE?
Lucy basking in the English sun.
What adventure is next? After a big trip to the UK it will be a while before I can go again, but am thinking of a ski trip to New Zealand next year. I have heard it is absolutely beautiful and cheaper than skiing in Oz. Do pack light, or over-pack? I’m a light packer. I’ve travelled a lot so I’ve learned how to roll my clothes tightly and what to leave at home. Who is your favourite travel buddy? My husband, Peter, of course! Travel is always a better experience for me when sharing it with him. What is the best thing about coming home? The weather! I can’t believe we are heading into winter soon and it's still swimming weather. It’s paradise. ●

IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT … SHROUD OF SECRECY? Mayor Tony Wellington has replied to last week’s rumour that councillors had been asked to keep quiet while the council deals with “sensitive issues”. “With wry amusement I read last week’s suggestion that councillors have been told to keep quiet. I’m afraid that’s just not possible,” Cr Wellington said. “A more vocal bunch of people you would be hard pressed to meet. Those residents who attended the recent general committee meeting would likely agree with me. The meeting went for five hours, primarily because every councillor chose to have their say.” ●
THIS IS NOT A JOKE Police are searching for thieves who stole the car of a Brisbane icon on Monday. The black VW Bug toy push pedal vehicle with chrome wheel caps belongs to well-known puppet Agro and was taken from a residence on Friedan Road at Deception Bay sometime between 4am and 8am. The toy car is one of a kind and is used by Agro’s owner for media engagements. Anyone who can provide information should contact Policelink on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. ●
We heard participants at the Tourism Summit 2017, the first of its kind in Noosa, all dined in style when ten of Noosa’s best chefs came together to create a Taste of Noosa lunch. Key restaurants included Season, Noosa Beach House, Locale Noosa, Noosa Waterfront, Rickys, Sails, Wasabi, Thomas Corner, Noosa Boathouse and Sum Yung Guys. Yep, that is Masterchef runner-up Matt Sinclair’s new venue and not the punchline to a dirty joke. Local boy Matt (pictured third from the left in the back row) is now running his own restaurant in Noosa. ●

DREARY SPACES SPRING TO LIFE Artworks are revitalising Noosa Junction by transforming dreary laneways and dull walls into public art spaces, according to Noosa Junction’s Judi Lalor. The latest addition began last week when artist Joel Birch was commissioned by storeowner Chloe Tozer to create murals on the laneway walls beside her Lanyana Way business. Joel’s work already adorns the walls at the Junction with the mural at the rear of restaurant Village Bicycle included in his resume. Chloe hopes the transformed laneway next to her shop CLO studios will become a space for “pop-up events”. Street art in laneways is a growing trend in cities like Melbourne and Brisbane where public art is becoming a tourist attraction in its own right. Noosa Junction’s Judi Lalor said the growing artistic flavour of the Junction was a reflection of the people that inhabited it. “The Junction has such an eclectic group. It’s about bringing that out and showing it off,” she said. “Everybody does it in different ways.” Judi believes the Junction’s style provides tourists with a different aspect of Noosa. “Hastings Street celebrates the beach and nature, and that makes it such a wonderful attraction,” she said. “The Junction is very local. she aims to “come back bigger, better and stronger”. She hopes to reopen CLO in six to eight weeks, and is even installing a fireplace in a show of courage against the fire that closed her down. ● Margie Maccoll

PURPOSEFUL WORKSHOP TRIAL A SUCCESS BY MARGIE MACCOLL Giving people greater purpose in their lives, recycling waste timber and creating Christmas gifts for children are the outcomes of a community project made permanent in Noosa. Noosa Community Support (NCS) this week announced popularity had led to the permanence and expansion of the Workshop program it trialled last year. The Workshop brings together eligible men and women aged over 65 years, and anyone with a disability to make items from wood. Last year, the program created toys for the Salvation Army to distribute to children in need at Christmas. It has been expanded from one to two days a week since it was initiated in July. Mayor Tony Wellington officially opened the Workshop on Monday, praising all involved for its success. “NCS is responsive to the clients’ needs, and we are witnessing that in action,” he said. Cr Wellington thanked Noosa Men’s Shed, Cleanaway and council’s waste management for sourcing the wood and the many volunteers, “without whose help this service would never exist”. NCS co-ordinator Greg Tucker said bringing clients together to have a bit of fun and feel part of the community was the aim of the Workshop. “They can do as much activity as they want and have as much fun as they want to have,” he said.
Neil Carrington, left, and Steve McEwan enjoying Noosa Community Support’s Workshop Program that is being expanded due to popular demand. Not everyone comes for the activities. Some like 92-year-old Gordon Edwards just come along “for a day out” NCS supervisor Geoff Brittain said the workshop would not have been possible without volunteer Steve McEwan, who helped with the workshop design, the support of Cooroora Woodworkers Club and their association with the Salvation Army. The Workshop operates Mondays and Thursdays. NCS provides a range of services including centre-based day care, personal care, house cleaning, meal and transport assistance and house maintenance. The service operated by Noosa Council with funding from the federal and state governments. For more information, contact Noosa Community Support on 5329 6175. ●

DOB IN VANS THAT CROSS THE LINE Noosa MP Glen Elmes is urging locals and visitors to dob in hire vans with offensive, sexist, misogynistic and obscene slogans. The use of slogans and imagery on vehicles that would make most blush is now illegal in Queensland, but Mr Elmes said he was worried that without help from the community to report the advertising, a number of holiday van hire companies would ignore the law. Currently, many budget accommodation sites in tourist areas such as Byron Bay ban vans with the offensive slogans from entering their property. “We should do that here, too,” Mr Elmes said. Before the Transport Operations (Road Use Management) (Offensive Advertising) Amendment Act 2017 was passed in the Queensland Parliament in February, advertising on vehicles was self-regulated by the industry. Mr Elmes said self-regulation had led to slogans such as ‘it’s easier to apologise than ask for permission and ‘I can already imagine the gaffa tape on your mouth’ popping up around town on holiday vans “vilifying women and encouraging an insidious culture of rape that exists in our society”. “New laws make provision for vehicles deemed to carry offensive advertising such as this, to be de-registered and now that we have a legal instrument to use against this type of advertising - it will be up to the
community as well as police, to be the eyes and ears of the law,” he said. “I came across this particular Wicked Camper (pictured) at Noosa Junction and I found it offensive, as I am sure many other people did who were shopping there that day, not expecting to see such filth in such large and loud proportions. “As required by law, I sent through the image to the Advertising Standards Bureau who will then determine if it does or does not comply with standards stipulated in the code. If it doesn’t the matter will be referred to the DirectorGeneral of Transport and Main Roads, who will then give the owner of the registration 14 days to clean it up before the vehicle will be de-registered.” Mr Elmes said budget conscious tourists such as backpackers were key targets for companies such as Wicked Campers and given the Noosa and the Sunshine Coast region is a popular tourist destination. “It is really important we as a local community get on board and report, report, report, to protect our families from these offensive and damaging messages,” he said. “To see for yourself, albeit a tame version of this material online visit www. wickedcampers.com.” ●

LETTERS
Post your letters to: 36 Mary St, Noosaville, 4566 or email: newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au
DYING WITH DIGNITY Thankyou for your comprehensive report on dying with dignity. While we would all like to die peacefully in our sleep, people who are losing their ability to live independently usually have no wish to experience their own slide into helplessness. It is a difficult choice to make, to end your own life, but one that should be an option for people who wish to be able to say goodbye to their loved ones, without being a burden on them. Anyone who has been a carer for an elderly parent will know the physical, and mental, toll that it takes to do this final expression of love. It is not unknown for carers to predecease their elderly parents. The elders in every family should have a choice about whether or not they choose this path, or whether they wish a more easeful death, with the blessing of their loved ones. It should not be up to the states to decide. Australia does not have to re-invent the wheel. Holland has been trail-blazer in this area, with sensible safeguards to ensure that individuals are making an un-pressured, sensible choice. Our state and federal governments need to show more compassion for the suffering of others, and to give them the choice to end that suffering. The opponents to voluntary euthanasia are private hospitals and nursing homes, for obvious reasons, and religious lobbies, who are applying medieval doctrines to the modern age. With our overstretched public health system, this prevention of years of chronic illness, and infirmity, would ease a lot of pressure on hospital beds that our ageing population has exacerbated. It is time for common sense and compassion to overrule self-interest. Joy Ringrose, Pomona.
EYE TO THE FUTURE Try to imagine how the skills and knowledge of the unemployed people from defunct Australian car and mining industries could be employed in the renewable energies industries. Could Jobson Groethe lead Australia into an innovative new age of manufacturing for the 21st century? Margaret Wilkie, Peregian Beach.
CLEAR AS DAYLIGHT Couldn’t agree more with Eddy Crooks' comments on daylight saving (Noosa Today, 20 April). I would add: what about the poor tradies who are awake at 4.30am in summer but then have to hang around before they can start work at 7am. It’s a no-brainer. It’s actually in Australia’s and Queensland’s best

If you have a photo of Noosa’s landscape or wildlife, send it to newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au interest to have daylight saving. Queensland the Smart State - 0/10. Re: coal powered power stations and the solar power deniers, have a look at the new generation of power station being built on the Sunny Coast, that’s if you can spot it. Queensland the Smart State - 10/10 Imagine how a nuclear or coal powered power station would have impacted on the landscape of the Sunny Coast by comparison. This one makes nuclear and coal what they are - obsolete. Ask why are China and the UK doing their utmost to buy Australia’s wind farms off us. Ask why with our climate are our leaders always so reluctant to recognise the bleeding obvious. Ask why are they so dumb/eager to make the Australian public subsidise an overseas company to rip the heart out of the country, even though they know the same is providing false job estimates? It could well destroy the Great Barrier Reef - 0/10. Short-sighted leaders - 10/10. Stuart Bradbury Peregian Beach.
LIGHT IN THE FIELDS Just a quick thankyou to Eddy Crook, Marcus Beach (Noosa Today, 20 April) whose letter on daylight saving reminded me of the 1950s and my job as a teenage farmhand in Warwickshire UK “shucking" along with the other farmhands in a cornfield harvesting at approximately 10 at night and sometimes later. Looking out for Mrs Fisher (the farmer’s wife ) bringing the picnic basket with cheese and strawberry jam sandwiches neatly quartered and the home-made fruit cake. Not forgetting of course the large jug of sweetened tea. Sugar was never a no-no then for us that I can recall. Mr Fisher being a local church preacher beer of course was out of the question, until on the way home at the local pub. If you made it before the towels went on. In fact

I think I enjoyed those “night picnics“"just as much as the 18 shillings a week wages and the free battery chicken that had stopped laying, which I gave to Mum for our Sunday family dinner. Oh and by the way the cows were waiting as usual at the same time next morning by the gate ready for milking. E. Wright, Sunrise Beach.
namulla, 6.38am. Time, distance and location, Eddy. Play around with it man and you’ll figure out why daylight saving is all in the mind. And we live in reality. Don’t change it. And please enough of the comparisons - this is South East Queensland, don’t mess with locals. Freddie Buckley, Cootharaba.
THE WHOLE COAL
DOLLARS TO DISASTER
Case Smit (Noosa Today 13 April) states “ ... there are 1500 coal-fired power stations in various stages of construction in the world. In fact, India and China are commissioning a new Hazelwood-equivalent every week.” His source says there are 1500 stations in various stages of construction or planning. The original report is over a year old now and a lot of those plans have been put on hold or cancelled because renewable energy and storage is much cheaper. India, in fact, is not planning to construct any more coal-fired power plants. China has continued to construct new coal-fired plants but is now over supplied by almost twice its needs. With these trends in mind, it makes absolutely no sense to have even a modicum of financial interest in coal production. China will produce its own coal and India will not be using any more within a very short time. The Queensland ALP policy, encouraging and even offering taxpayer support to the Adani Carmichael coal project is economically insane as well as ecologically disastrous. The party that can offer a South Australian approach to energy policy should win the state election next year. Why? Because it will provide cheaper and more dependable power more jobs and energy security. Who could argue with that? At the moment neither major party seems to have any idea of where this is all going. Steve Hall, Cooroy.
WAKE UP AND FACE REALITY Dear Eddy Crook (Noosa Today, 20 April) you are wrong! But in one short paragraph you were right, there are no problems with daylight saving. It is all in the mind, but only if you let it. Only if you have to deal with the other states that are not in touch with reality. You see daylight saving is all about time and distance and those buggers from somewhere else. I travel into NSW weekly all year round Eddy and during daylight saving it’s a hassle not a benefit. Have you ever been to Cunnamulla? Find it, by atlas or whatever, draw a line straight down and you’ll run into Melbourne. Townsville, you’ll run into Sydney. Noosa, up or down, nothing but water. Well, over long distance. Sunrise at Noosa Heads, 6.05am. Cun-
More isn’t better, Mr Massingham. How has the $900 million tourist dollars you say have been injected into our economy been used? Have they brought any benefits to the residents? The letters in the local papers re “Share the Benefits" all ask for an answer to the use of the tourist dollars. How does the tourist dollar reach the coffers of the council other than from the tarrifs collected from registered holiday accommodation, businesses, shops and restaurants? Does it come from parking fines? Easter break was a busy time for our parking inspectors. Visitors parked on yellow lines, no standing zones, in our driveways, nature strips and on private properties. How much revenue did council collect over Easter alone? Does it come from campers’ fines? Campers as well as itinerant workers here for the holidays who live in their vans camp in the National Park, Noosa Woods and in residential districts close to Hastings Street. Does it come from short-term residential holiday lettings, Airbnb, Stayz etc? Three or four-night stays throughout the year can realize an annual income to the owner of anywhere between $10,000 and $100,000. How does the community as a whole benefit from this money-raiser? What does council collect? I suspect nothing. Right? These residences are not required to comply with local fire and health codes, pay licences, have on-site parking or seek local council approvals. Too hard to keep checks on these? Short stay residences are easy to spot with their overflowing rubbish bins left permanently on the streets, hordes of cars parked outside, loud social gatherings, lights on all night. Do we have local laws that consider the residents and restrict this practice? Housing should not be regarded as a commodity and a way of maximising income. Residential housing should provide a social function. Permission should be sought if one wants to rent out their home for short-term stays and at the very least, the neighbouring residents should be given the right of veto. If not, then what is council doing about it? (One only has to read how the capital cities around the world have reacted.) Valerie Hudson, Noosa Heads. noosatoday.com.au

UNITS TAKE HOUSING LEAD IN A FIRST BASED on building activity data released by the ABS there were more newly-built units completed over the December 2016 quarter than houses, the first time on-record this has occurred. A report by CoreLogic’s Cameron Kusher said the number of new dwellings approved for construction had recently fallen from historically high levels which will over time result in fewer commencements and completions moving forward. The latest building activity data for the December 2016 quarter, showed that dwelling commencements and completions were actually higher over the quarter, the report said. Meanwhile, the number of dwellings under construction and the number of dwellings approved but awaiting commencement fell. Over the December 2016 quarter there were 28,690 new houses that commenced construction and 27,887 new units which commenced construction, while new house commencements were -3.4 per cent lower, new unit commencements increased by 3.9 per cent. Mr Kusher said since the end of 2016 there had been a substantial decline in house and unit approvals so it was reasonable to expect dwelling commencements would follow the lead of approvals and start to trend lower over the coming quarters. “If we look at the number of new houses and units approved for construction but not yet commenced, there were 9814 houses and 29,044 units yet to start the construction phase,” Mr Kusher said. “The number of new houses approved but not commenced increased by five per cent over the quarter while the number of new units fell by -11.7 per cent from its historic high the previous quarter.” Mr Kusher said it was reasonable to expect there would be fewer commencements going forward, given dwelling approvals having fallen quite significantly from record high levels since December 2016. “Completions on the other hand could remain high for some time given that there are still many houses and units under construction,” he said.
For the first time on record, newly-built units have outweighed houses across Australia. “New house and unit completions have averaged 43,497 a quarter over the past five years, even if there were no additional new commencements based on this run-rate it would take almost five quarters for the stock to clear. “It is also important to note the fact that the number of units under construction has started to decline in Victoria and Queensland while it continues to rise in New South Wales. “Commencements data shows that the number of starts have also fallen in Victoria and Queensland while they continue to trend higher in New South Wales." Mr Kusher said the pull-back in Victoria and
Queensland for commencements is probably related to unit oversupply concerns in the inner city areas of the state capitals. “In fact the rate of growth for units is already dramatically lagging that of houses in Melbourne and Brisbane, while the same trends are not evident in Sydney,” he said. “It is clear the market is responding to the heightened level of dwelling construction over recent years. While it appears that in most states commencements are now falling they have continued to climb in New South Wales, which ultimately is positive given it is the state with the largest overall undersupply of housing.” ●

LIVE
THE MOST DANGEROUS Introducing “Paradise City” - The Guns N’ Roses show. A brand new authentic tribute to “the most dangerous band in the world” is heading to Noosa for a live performance at the V Room, Villa Noosa next month. GN’R are undeniably one of the biggest rock bands of all time. Their first LP ‘Appetite For Destruction’ became the highest selling debut album of all time, and continues to sell to this day, with new generations of youngsters idolising the iconic rock gods. In 1993 Guns N’ Roses played the largest ever headline show in the southern hemisphere, at Melbourne’s Calder
Park, which the band still talk about when recounting career highlights. Based in Brisbane, Australia, “Paradise City” is the closest thing you’ll get to the real deal in their prime. Delivering an amazingly accurate homage to Guns N’ Roses in their world conquering era, circa 1987-'93. Frontman Paul delivers a ball-tearing Axl vocal that’ll have you feeling like you’ve actually travelled back in time. Lead guitarist Nathan accurately reproduces Slash’s classic style via his trademark Gibson Les Paul, untamed afro, and the unmistakable top hat.
“Paradise City” delivers two hours of classic GN’R, including mega hits like Sweet Child O’ Mine, Paradise City, November Rain, Welcome To The Jungle, Patience, Don’t Cry, You Could Be Mine, Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door, and many many more. Complete with top shelf sound and lighting production, and detailed costume design, this show is guaranteed to give punters an explosive Guns N’ Roses experience. Break out your bandanas and grab your tickets early via www.villanoosa.com.au for only $10 pre-sale or $15 at the door. The show is on Friday 12 May at 8pm. ●

A girl, her car and guitar
Missing at Sea by Rita Lee Chapman
Armed only with her car and a guitar, Mel Yeates has been busking her way around Australia since December 2016 to raise $100,000 for Beyondblue (anxiety and depression awareness) and Love Your Sister (cancer research). She started off with an initial target to raise $20,000 in 20 months for these charities - and managed to smash this in less than six months. Mel will be performing at View Restaurant Peppers Noosa Resort and Villas at 3.30pm on Monday 1 May. A $5 cover charge will be donated to the charity (patrons will receive a free drink from the View Bar and Restaurant). There will be a raffle to raise money for Beyondblue and Love Your Sister. Plan to make it for this amazing opportunity to support these foundations. ●
Local author Rita Lee Chapman has just released Missing at Sea, book two in the Anna Davies Mystery Series. Missing at Sea follows on from Missing in Egypt. Three years on from Egypt, Anna Davies embarks on her first cruise with best friend Sandra. A few days into the holiday they are woken by three blasts from the ship’s foghorn, indicating that someone has fallen overboard. Was it suicide? Did she lose her balance and fall - or was there foul play involved? Did her husband push her? Would anyone be able to prove whether this was murder or an unfortunate accident? What a perfect place to stage a murder! Missing at Sea is available locally from Annie’s Books on Peregian at 8 Kingfisher Drive, Peregian Beach. ●
Their Finest (MA15+) Starring: Gemma Arterton, Sam Claflin, Bill Nighy
Witty, moving and well-acted this is one of those little gems that the British film industry throw up from time to time. Charming and yet just gritty enough not to become sugar sweet. It’s 1940, the height of the London Blitz, Catrin (Gemma Arterton) has followed her artist husband from Wales to the city despite the dangers. Struggling to make ends meet, the young Welshwoman goes for a job interview with the Government Film Unit for what she thinks is a secretarial position. However she ends up in a British film industry charged with lifting the spirits of the war-ravaged country and to encourage America to join the war. It’s all faced with that British stiff-upper lip and dry humour. ●

WHAT’S ON CARVE A PATH TO WOOD EXPO This weekend the Maleny Showgrounds holds one of Australia’s best wood shows: the Maleny Wood Expo. Taupotini (Kohu) from the Marquesas Islands will visit the expo as part of the Sister Cities exchange program. Throughout the Expo Cecile, Kohu and local wood sculptor Shane Christensen will use traditional carving tools to create two gate sentinels. This year at Maleny Wood Expo, together with Queensland Land and Water Carers (QWaLC), will introduce the Junior Landcare Paddock: a hub for kids’ workshops and activities. The 2017 Maleny Wood Expo will be held on the Labour Day long weekend - from this Saturday 29 April to Monday 1 May. Entry is $15 adults, $12 concession, 16 and under - free.

Walking into WtF?Pizza is a fair assault on the senses straight away. The aroma of organic slow-aged dough, hand-made cheese and sauce crafted from their secret stash of perfectly vine-ripened tomatoes baking in their super-hot high tech oven will whack you around the nose first. Salivating yet? But there’s so much more to this place. the ethos behind WtF?Pizza is all in the name; Who’s the Farmer? They want to give the hardworking farmers a stage on which to showcase their produce as more than just fresh greens, handmade sausage or beautifully tended tomatoes. This Hastings Street pizza joint is serving up pizza with a purpose. Step inside WtF?Pizza where their community of producers are the stars and have the opportunity to tell you why they do what they do and experience real food, real quality and real taste. When you know who made it and where it comes from, then you can truly trust your food! Meaty goodness is sourced from Eumundi Meats, where Jon the butcher is genuinely passionate about two things: meat and more meat. Consistently providing quality produce, Jon spends much of his time sourcing his meat direct from farmers so he knows exactly where his animals come

from and how they’ve been raised. It’s just gotta taste better! Local bacon expert George Francisco of Voodoo Bacon has been hooked on that smoky gold ever since touring a bacon factory as a young apprentice chef in the Deep South of America and sources pork from Ipswich, curing it organically and nitrate-free right here in Noosa. Then there’s Eumundi Smokehouse wild caught Norwegian salmon, bio-dynamic chook, free range pork, grass-fed yearling, chorizo, Polish kielbasa and boudin noir (that’s fancy for black pudding) ... is your mouth watering yet? A Noosa institution, Noosa Reds tomato magicians from Doonan have been supplying the freshest and tastiest red gems to fancy Sunshine Coast restaurants for years and can now be found, of course, at WtF?Pizza. Noosa Leafy Greens Steve and Bronwyn are crazy passionate about all things leafy and green and Stephen has applied his numerous degrees to discovering the most incredible ways to produce leafy greens of outstanding taste and not even a hint of chemical nasties anywhere. Even the flour is milled from source organic grains from across the Darling Downs and throughout Queensland from a variety of legendary organic grain producers courtesy of Kialla Pure Foods in Toowoomba. Coolmunda Organic Olives keep over 5000 olive trees which are hand pruned and hand-picked by a large extended family of manzanillo and Kalamata lovers, but every salty black jewel coming out of this place is completely organic. Top it all off with Vanella Cheese, where the head cheese maker, Vito, was born in Italy and spent his formative years there learning from the best cheese producers how to get the stretch in mozzarella and the knots in nodini. He now handcrafts amazing burrata, mozzarella and straciatella from buffalo and dairy milk from the very best of North Queensland’s herds straight to your pizza. So there’s a rundown of what you can expect to eat at Who’s the Farmer? You can either enjoy a naked pizza in its natural state (like a classic margherita but only better) or you can dress it from the endless selection of awesomely fresh vegies, handcrafted salamis or artisanal cheeses laid out before you. noosatoday.com.au

MAISIE’S GOES THE EXTRA MILE BY HOLLIE HARRIS Maisie’s Seafood and Steakhouse is a great value, family-friendly restaurant based here in Noosaville. Offering top-quality dishes made using local produce, the iconic waterfront restaurant on the Noosa River always goes the extra mile for their diners. Watch the boats cruise along the river as you enjoy a drink and a magnificent sunset or bring the family along and get stuck into a hearty meal of seafood and steak and bask in the history behind one of Noosa’s original dining icons. Built in 1920 and originally run as the first cafe of its kind in the district, the Depression and World War II came and went. Feeding the troops stationed in the area, they began to offer a drive-in takeaway service, with the troops driving their amphibious Army Ducks out of the river and up to the cafe to collect food that was cooked on a small wood stove! These days, the family owned and locally operated seafood and steakhouse offers a relaxed atmosphere alongside a rich Australian history that adds to the ambience. Dishes are freshly prepared and delivered quickly to your table, ensuring that you enjoy the finest quality cuisine each time you visit. The menu offers a large range of dishes that are sure to satisfy the whole family.

KICK START YOUR DAY PROPERLY BY HOLLIE HARRIS It can be tempting to skip breakfast in exchange for a few extra minutes in bed but a healthy, nutritious breakfast is essential to starting the day on the right foot. According to research, taking the time to eat a healthy breakfast can help improve concentration, reduce the desire to snack and boost energy. Experts say breakfast is fuel for the body so starting the day by eating a healthy meal is like giving the body premium unleaded to speed through the day. It will also improve concentration levels. Those who find that their concentration tends to dip throughout the day to being marginally better than a three-year-old post-red cordial can blame it on missing breakfast. Skipping breakfast can also lead to bingeing later on. Experts say this is mostly due to excessively low blood sugars and they say it’s vital to maintain steady blood sugars for portion control and weight loss. But, health aside, breakfast is also a great chance to clock up some serious social time with friends or family. Ideally the day should start with a relaxing catch up with friends over a delicious breakfast or spending some quality time enjoying one of many great breakfast hot spots that the Noosa region has to offer. ●

TRY THIS … Make the move to improve THREE …
Keys to success
1
Be grateful for your progress so far. Few people know that this is the keystone habit for achieving goals. If you create a daily habit just for a few minutes to express gratitude for the progress you achieved so far, you will gain huge confidence.
2
You don’t need a detailed plan, you only need to know the next actionable step. Ask “what is the next action that I can perform to advance this goal?” Write it down for each goal. At the end, you will have one actionable step for each goal. Planning a whole goal takes two to three hours but figuring out only the next action takes about five minutes. 10 minutes if you are stuck.
3
Revise, delete or change every quarter. In three months’ time, you will know more about your goals than you do right now and when you have more experience and information, you might want to change things around. Oh ... and start with your goals now.
CREATIVE INSPIRATION APLENTY Are you ready to connect with inspiring women, discover new ideas for your career and gain an insight into how some of Noosa’s most successful women have built their businesses? PASSING ON A NOBLE TRADITION The team at Noosa Outlook Child Care Centre are very passionate about educating the attending children on the value of Australian history, so it was only natural the importance of Anzac Day was shared with all the children. The staff and the children have been very busy creating wreaths to be laid at Tewantin and Cooroy services together with a fantastic display by the children aged from 15 months to school age. Lest we forget.
Some of the children's work in honour of Anzac Day.

We meet on the second and fourth Monday of each month 6.30pm-8.30pm at the Noosaville State School library. First two visits are free so you can come and see if it’s the place for you. For inquiries phone David on 0413 319 033.
The Theosophical Society will present a discussion of A Course in Miracles: The teachings of this text have been praised in the work of many spiritual seekers including Marianne Williamson, Eckhart Tolle, Wayne Dyer and many others. We will look at some key ideas and how they can be of practical use in our daily lives. The meeting will be held at the CWA Hall, 123 Poinciana Avenue, Tewantin, at 7pm on Friday 28 April. $3 donation, all welcome.

Great Sandy Strait is a sand passage estuary between the Queensland mainland near Maryborough and World Heritage-listed Fraser Island. Home to a wide range of shorebirds, marine fish, crustaceans, dugong, sea turtles, dolphins and migrating humpback whales, its estuarine wetlands have RAMSAR listing. Of utmost concern for the health of this region is the proposed New Hope Coal open cut coal mine on the edge of the Susan River, a tributary to the Mary River that flows directly into Great Sandy Strait. On 28 April, Julie Devine and Vicki Perrin, of Lock the Gate Alliance, and Dr Tanzi Smith, of Mary River Catchment Co-ordinating Committee, will be guest speakers at Noosa Parks Association’s Friday Environment Forum. The likely consequences for this pristine expanse of coastline if this mine proceeds will be discussed. Join the audience at Noosa Parks Association’s Environment Centre at 5 Wallace Drive, Noosaville, to learn more about this development. The forum begins at 10.30am and coffee is available from 10am. Meet Valda and the interpretive birding group in the car park at 8.30am to enjoy the birds of Wallace Park. All welcome. Visit www.noosaparks.org.au for more information.

SPORT TODAY MINOGUE IS NEW HEAD COACH
Noosa's Australian kayak champion Vivienne Golding doing what she does best.
BY HOLLIE HARRIS Sunshine Beach Surf Lifesaving Club recently announced that it has appointed a new head coach for the 2017/18 surf sports season. For the previous two seasons exOlympian and Australia’s most successful life saving competitor Clint Robinson has been in place as head coach at Sunshine Beach, but with Clint moving onto new challenges after the recent Australian titles it was time to make way for a new face to head up the coaching team. As such the club is pleased to announce that Josh Minogue, ex-Ironman series competitor, Coolangatta Gold winner and
Fox Sports/WIN News sports presenter has agreed to join their team as from May 2017 as head coach. Josh brings many years of competition experience with him and has a young, fresh approach to coaching and surf club life which is sure to resonate with the team of Nippers and cadet competitors who have enjoyed so much success in previous years at branch, state and Australian level. For information on joining Sunshine Beach Surf Lifesaving club as a volunteer life saver, Nipper or surf sports competitor, please visit our website www. sunshinebeachslsc.com.au or call the life saving administrator on 5447 5491. ●
VIVIENNE PLANS TO POUR POWER ON Vivienne hasn’t taken a break from kayaking. In fact, as owner of Noosa Everglades’ sustainable kayak operator Kanu Kapers, she’s in training every day. Vivienne’s passion for kayaking developed from her love of nature, so when her kayaking career ended, instead of choosing to coach she decided to be an instructor, guiding kayak tours in to the wilderness and teaching people how to kayak efficiently and safely and promoting environmental sustainability. Asked what she expected to achieve at the games Vivienne said she just wanted to get out there and do the best she could. “I’m really excited to be competing with these iconic athletes, teammates and friends again,” she said. “I love the challenges of the slalom and focusing on my strength and fitness. It’s my passion and my job. It’s just my thing.” ●
New SBSLSC head coach Josh Minogue with club president Craig Law.

Noosa’s Australian kayak champion Vivienne Golding is set to compete alongside former Olympians at The World Masters Games 2017 in Auckland this week. Vivienne will compete in the over50s canoe slalom alongside former Olympians from all over the globe next week as 27,000 participants come together to compete across 28 sports at the games, the largest multi-sport event in the world. Canoe slalom events are being hosted at Vector Wero Whitewater Park, the first purpose-built white water park in New Zealand. It’s a challenging 400-metre grade three course but Vivienne’s ready for the challenge. Vivienne represented Australia internationally for almost a decade in the '80s, last competing at the 2009 Masters Games in Sydney. Despite the time since her last international competition,

HIGHWAY ONE
REVISITED Despite its endless stretches of roadworks and inexplicable 80km/h zones where roadworks may have taken place in times since past, I do enjoy a ramble up and down the Pacific Highway once or twice a year. The downside was that I missed the swell that kept on giving over and after Easter; the upside was that I also missed the worst of the crowds, while scoring a few waves in relatively isolated spots. And now that the rains have backed off, the Northern Rivers and the Mid-North Coast of NSW are brilliantly green for this late in the autumn. I’ve been driving up and down the old Pacific looking for waves for almost half a century now, and while the old surf dog landmarks don’t mean so much these days - the Hoey Moey, the Crescent Country Club and the Bellevue at Tuncurry are just a youthful blur - so many of the beaches along the way are the same as they ever were. Between Coffs and Kempsey there are still so many places where you can find a lonely back beach or a stretch of reef that only the locals tap into. On the last couple of Pacific runs, I’ve rediscovered one such spot, only a few kilometres off the highway, where a oneshop village nestles on a ridge between
two postcard bays, both of which have fun surf on their day. And last week I renewed my acquaintance with Seal Rocks, still a breathtakingly beautiful and largely untouched gem. (But no point being coy about naming this one - it’s well and truly on the radar.) A hundred years ago when I was a reporter on the Newcastle paper, working afternoon shifts, two buddies and I would make the dawn drive up the coast whenever conditions looked good, and surf the rights at Seal Rocks on a southerly or the A-frame beachies at Treachery on a northerly, often by ourselves midweek. A 90-minute drive each way (no speed cameras back then) and worth every second of it. We’d surf our brains out, grab a pie at Buladelah on the way back and be dripping saltwater over our typewriters by 2pm. The other day I shared the point with a few hundred soft-tops and SUPs, but it was still fun to finish a wave and flick out looking at virgin coastline as far as you could see to the north. Apart from Tea Tree and Granite, there aren’t too many places where you can still do that on our East Coast. Another highlight of the trip south was an overnight dash down to Bellambi Point
Jeff Hakman driving hard at Hanalei Picture: Larr y Gerky
in the Greater ’Gong, one of my home beaches when I was learning to surf in the ’60s, and where I left my two front teeth embedded in the outer wall of the rock pool (the pool is still there, my teeth aren’t!). Two fun sessions at the point - even ran into a couple of old relics from back in the day punctuated by a splendid seafood lunch and a glass of crisp white while looking out over Wollongong Harbour. Back in Noosa in time for the last hurrah of the Easter swell, and to share a few Sunday morning slides at the park with our mayor. There probably aren’t too many places on the East Coast where you can do that either.
THE HAK IS BACK! Twenty years ago I wrote a book about my friend Jeff Hakman’s successful battle against heroin addiction. The book, called Mr Sunset, was a hit and Hakman and I spent some great times on the road promoting it around the world, and later worked together for years at Quiksilver Europe’s headquarters in France. A surf hero since he won the inaugural Duke Kahanamoku Invitational in big waves at Sunset Beach in 1965, aged just 17, Jeff

was arguably the best surfer in the world in 1970-’72, just ahead of the rise of Michael Peterson. He won the Pipe Masters and became the first non-Australian to win the Bells Beach Pro in 1976. Later in life he also competed successfully as a longboarder, but after he got the monkey off his back in the late ’90s, he started to drift away from surfing. Last week in Sydney we had dinner with his former wife Cherie, who informed us that Jeff was back living on K’auai, was on neighbour Felipe Pomar’s “Surf to 100” fitness program, and was riding big waves again at 68. As if by magic, an incredible Larry Gerky photo of Hakman shredding a solid Hanalei wall on a 10-foot 7-inch Terry Chun gun just a few days ago appeared on social media within hours. I was so stoked to see a mate back doing what he does best. AROUND THE GROUNDS
GREAT RESULTS FOR FINS BY LUCY WHITEHILL NOOSA DOLPHINS Under 9 - Noosa Dolphins 35 def Flinders 30 The Under 9 Dowling and Neylan Noosa Fins had a great season opener match up against a strong Flinders team. The Fins got off to a flying start with Charlie tackling like a pro, some fantastic teamwork from both the forwards and backs and some acrobatics by Ritchie on the try line to score. The second half saw the Fins looking a bit flatter, but managing to keep up some momentum to set up a few more tries with Rory, Ritchie, CJ and Charlie all getting across the line to score. The Fins came away with a win in the end. The Domino's Pizza Player of the Week Award went to Charlie McKerrow. Under 10 - Noosa Dolphins 21 def Matthew Flinders 17
A quick kick-off forced a fumble and the Dowling and Neylan Noosa Dolphins Under 10 side’s season started with a bustling attack, with Flinders fleeing from the committed advance. Daniel made the most of the opening onslaught, darting through for the first try of the season, brilliantly converted from the sideline by Harry. Flinders bounced back with a runaway, and two more tries had Noosa on the ropes. Finnbar burst from a half-way ruck, palming and ploughing towards the line before Atticus took over, scoring our second, which was also converted. With time ticking down, Oscar bolted the length of the field, pulling a penalty which Harry used to dash to the line. Another conversion and the boys were bouncing with joy on the full-time whistle. A deserved win for a determined effort. Under 12 - Noosa Dolphins 5 def by Caloundra 19 A great display of rugby skills were shown considering the two week break. Noosa forwards worked tirelessly as
the game was a display of pick and drive with the backs starved of the ball. Man of the match was Jack Foreman who was relentless. The Dowling and Neylan Noosa Dolphins 48 def University 17 University hosted this Round 1 match and took an early lead with a kick and run from deep inside their own half. The Dolphins then took control of possession, territory and the scoreboard. Soren, Sabyr, Joe and Jack were tireless in the forwards, defending bravely and winning plenty of ball. The pace and passing moves along the back line from James, Jarrah, Lochie and Max was sensational and Josh Whitehill was on fire again with a brilliant all-round display of strength, skill and speed. This was a really promising start to the season. Tries: Jarrah (2), Josh (2), Lochie D (2), Max, Ollie; Conversions: Jarrah (2), Sabyr, Lochie D; Domino’s Pizza Player of the match: Josh Whitehill.
Acrobatic Try of the Week Award to Ritchie Bourne.

EAGLE-EYED TIGERS SHOW THEIR SKILLS Noosa Tigers Under 12 Division 1 player Ethan Slaney runs into an open goal against Kawana Park Eagles last Saturday. Picture: CRAIG SLANEY
The Noosa Eagles Under 6s were very excited to be back on the field playing Buddina Turtles. The score was 1-7 to Buddina with Myles getting player of the week for his great effort! The Noosa Eagles Under 7 Gold team demonstrated their skill and determination against the Mooloolah Bandys on Saturday. Although the 2-1 score was not in their favour, the only goal scored by Nate was a cracker. A special mention also goes to Byron for his excellent positional play and Connor for his outstanding defence. A great team effort on display - well done to all the boys! A great game for our Under 9 Gold team against the Chancellor Cubs. The Cubs scored first when they slipped one past goal keeper Eli Cussell but the Golden Eagles quickly found the equaliser through striker Joel Fitzgerald. The second half seesawed between the two teams with the Cubs getting ahead 2-1 then another goal from Fitzgerald squaring things up only to see the Cubs sneak ahead 3-2. Fitzgerald grabbed his hat-trick to even the scores again, then in the dying minutes, Harrison Howard found the back of the net to give the Eagles the win at 3-4. A truly exciting game with outstanding performances all over the ground, but it was the gritty effort in the mid field which won Bonnie Boyes the player of the match. Under 9 Black had a really great game and were lucky the rain held off. The other team seemed so much bigger but the kids played hard and won 5-3. Kallum Kilgour scored his first goal of the season, the other goal scorers were Lenny Kohut and Rohnan Mills. Man of the match went to Noah Payne who played an awesome game with some great tackles and passes. ● noosatoday.com.au

TIGERS REIGN SUPREME IN DERBY The Rococo’s Bar and Bistro Noosa Tigers put in a splendid four quarter performance against Maroochydore at Maroochydore last Saturday to run away easy eight goal victors in very blustery conditions. In a game where the physicality between the two clubs was on notice right from the first bounce, the Tigers were bold and solid in defence as the hometown Roos kicked with a 2 or 3 goal wind in the first quarter.
peland killing the Roos on the scoreboard wing and continually sending the ball into the Tigers forward line. Whilst it wasn’t a day for big marking forwards Jefferies and Hall, their physical presence was certainly on show and made it easier for the likes of new recruit Kent Delbridge to capitalise. Ruckman Connor McDoanld and the super impressive Jason Coleman also had influence in a really tough first half of footy. The Tigers were up by 13 points at the main break.

The Noosa Reserves notched up their second win out of as many matches with a nail-biting win over Maroochydore. The Reserves came bursting out of the blocks and were up to challenge immediately. Daniel Bence was lively up forward and caused trouble for the Maroochydore defence. Gafa provided a great target up forward as Winter’s run was highlight all helping set up a comfortable 14 point lead at half time. After half time, Maroochydore came out

With players exhausted, the siren sounded and the Reserves came away with a four point win. A perfect way to start the season with 2 wins from the first 2 matches. The Reserves will look to make it three from three next week against the in-form Coorparoo at home. See you all there at 11.45am

BETWEEN THE FLAGS
RON LANE
SUCCESS FOR HARD-WORKING CREWS On Monday 1 May, at 5pm, the flags will come down ending yet another season of volunteer patrols for our three local beaches, Peregian, Sunshine Beach and Noosa Heads. All indications are that it will be another season with no lives lost between the flags while our people were on patrol. Despite Easter and the school holidays ending, crowds are still big and generally speaking conditions have been good. The only incidents were at Noosa where two first aid cases, a dislocated shoulder while body surfing and a dislocated knee as a result of a fall in the surf were reported. Noosa once again conducted their Saturday morning Seahorse Nippers and despite light rain it was well attended. A highlight of the morning was little Rohan McDonald celebrating his birthday. This young man has been a Seahorse Nipper right from the start and his courage and happy personality has made him many friends. From all involved we wish him a happy birthday and many more. You, young man is what it is all about. To ensure that the Seahorse Nippers people keep abreast of things, a special Helpers Workshop will be hosted by Noosa this Friday 28 April, in the upstairs training room of the Surf Club, starting at 4.30pm and going till 5.30pm. All Helpers, past, current and future are invited to attend. The purpose of this training session is that it will assist helpers to provide better help to the special needs Nippers. The guest speaker for the evening will be Autism and Behaviour Specialist, Erika Gleeson, Founder and Director of Autism Swim and initiator of Coogee Dippers Special Needs Nippers Program with Coogee S.L.S.C in Sydney.
We come to the end of another successful season of patrols on our beaches. Information sessions will cover; What is Autism? Intellectual Disability, Down Syndrome, ADHD, Epilepsy and how do they affect children. Drowning and Autism, Autism Behaviour, Communication tips and Sensory Challenges. Everyone welcome. If intending to attend please RSVP to,

nippers@noosasurfclub. com.au - this will assist with catering. It is now four years since the Noosa club became involved with Rustic Pathways. This is an organisation with an American base, whose aim is to provide overseas educational travel, usually aimed at students
during their gap year. One of the major requirements is that they become involved in the various communities that they visit. With this in mind. the Noosa Surf Club has now become part of the schedule for Rustic travellers. Arriving two weeks ago at the Surf Club, they enrolled for a week’s training course conducted by the Noosa Community Education Program. This is the course required to cover the Surf Rescue Certificate. “This gives our group an involvement in something that is uniquely Australian,” Shannon Calloway, group supervisor, said. “Before arriving in Noosa, we did six weeks of community service in Fiji and also spent three weeks in New Zealand. Our other groups who visited Noosa spoke highly of everything so we now make it part of our travel program.” The visit of the Rustic Pathway team, plus Tina Logan of the National Ability Center San Diego USA, speaks volumes for the good will and hospitality that has now become part of character of the Noosa Surf Club. Beach patrolling and good will towards international visitors. What could be better? Sunshine Beach President Craig Law said, “we are very happy with our season’s performance, in both patrolling and competition. The response time of our ATV teams and IRB crews into the isolated Alexandria Bay in times of emergency has been outstanding; it is something for our patrol people to be proud of. It is unpatrolled, lonely and dangerous yet people won’t listen, they still swim there. So far we have been lucky - but who knows what lies ahead?” ●
NOOSA WEATHER FORECAST MANGROVE JACK
THURSDAY Sunny
BAIT UP AS THE INSHORE REEFS ARE FIRING With weather reports looking good for this week, the offshore gang will heading out in force. There’s been excellent numbers of tuna over the last week. Carrying a variety of size and type of lure is always a good idea when chasing tuna. A mixture of small metal slugs, micro jigs, soft plastics and poppers and stickbaits is ideal. The tuna have been quite willing to take larger lures of late with poppers and stickbaits being a very visual and exciting way to catch them. Sunshine Reef has been fishing well with good catches of sweetlip, snapper, some nice coral trout, tuskfish, and longtail tuna. Micro jigs have been accounting for a great fish on Sunshine Reef. Attaching a small treble on the rear of your micro jig will increase hook-up rates dramatically and won’t alter the action of the jig too much. North Reef has also seen some nice fish hitting the decks. Pearl Perch, snapper, tuskfish, maori cod, sweetlip, longtail and yellowfin tuna, as well as spanish and spotted mackerel. With weather conditions so good a lot of angler are also doing the big steam up to noosatoday.com.au
Karla Rickwood with a 42cm mangrove jack. Double Island in search of big snapper, large pearl perch, and of course those elusive red emperor. The Barwon Banks was also another great spot to head with some nice fish taken. In the river, whiting have been in good numbers and have been a great target for the youngsters on school holidays, the incoming tide will be your best bet with the clearer water coming through. Whiting are a relatively easy species to target and are quite safe for the kids to handle as they have no real serious spikes. Live worms and yabbies have been the go to bait. Surface lures have been real popular as there have been good schools of trevally and

tailor in the river, the sought after golden trevally are also making their way into the river, this should only continue to get better as winter approaches. Some cracking mangrove jack have been landed around the sand bags and the rock walls near the river mouth. Hopping soft vibes is a good way to chase the red devils especially when the water is a bit dirtier as they give off plenty of vibration. Flathead have also been in great numbers with some very large fish taken over the Easter period, live baits have been the prime baits. The North Shore is still a hive of activity with a lot of anglers making the most of the Anzac Day public holiday and taking the Monday off to get the four-day weekend. As the water is starting to cool the tailor have started to show - finding a good gutter and fishing the incoming tide has been the key with pilchards, mullet and bonito the prime baits. For the kids the dart are everywhere and there are some bigger fish among them. Fishing those close gutters with prawns, worms and smaller cut baits will see a result. On behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures. ●
