Line-up ready to light up Light of Day Australia has announced the first names for its 2017 Winter Gigs line-up. Heading to Ocean Grove for the 21 and 22 July shows will be Michael Spibey of the Badloves, Dreamboogie, Gallie and a return visit from Aussie legend Mike Rudd and Spectrum. This will be the fourth annual Light of Day Australia Winter Gigs which raise funds and awareness in the fight against Parkinson’s Disease. The first artists’ announcement was made during a well-supported sponsors event held at the Driftwood Cafe. The Driftwood Cafe is one of four Ocean Grove venues hosting the Winter Gigs along with Olive Pit Deli, Piping Hot Chicken Shop and Burger Grill and Maggie’s Bar. Musician and co-organiser Tony Armstrong welcomed the sponsors who got to watch a film show of last year’s event.

Paul Carrigg, Bec Mitchell, Leoh Mahney, Lynda Morrow, Phil Smurthwaite and Tony Armstong (front) were all at the Light of Day Australia launch in Ocean Grove. 167840 Picture: LIGHT OF DAY AUSTRALIA “We’ve had a great sponsors night. I’ve got to say the support of the local community in Ocean Grove, across the Bellarine and Geelong is outstanding. It’s so good to see,” he said. “We’re two to three months out and

it’s already looking very exciting.” More names will be added in the run up to the tickets sales opening early June. Last year the event sold out. In previous years artists have included saxophone player Eddie Manion from Bruce Springsteen’s E

Street Band, Anthony D’Amato from New Jersey, Chris Wilson and Diesel, Rebecca Barnard, Marshal Okell and Mark Lang from Skipping Girl Vinegar. Light of Day Australia donates the funds it raises equally to the Shake It

Up Foundation and the Light of Day Foundation. To keep up further announcements and ticket releases follow Light of Day Australia facebook or log on to the website www.lightofdayaustralia. com

New lease on life refurbishment of the Ocean Grove SLSC, which includes a major overhaul for the clubrooms and facility. Barwon Coast Committee general manager Gary McPike said: “As a publicly-owned building on Crown land it is essential that all interested parties have the opportunity to tender for this lease”. “The timing is perfect as the successful tender will have the opportunity to have input into the detailed design phase of the project, ensuring it is built to their requirements. Probity is paramount throughout the tender process, and all interested parties

will be afforded open, transparent and equitable opportunities to participate. BCCM expects the open and public tender process will deliver the best value for money outcome with direct benefits for all Victorians who use and enjoy the coast.” The tender is open now and closes on 19 May, with the outcome of the tender known by the end of May. The lease tender will be managed by BCCM, and commercial real estate agents Darcy Jarman have been engaged to undertake the marketing campaign. Architects Wood Marsh have been

engaged to complete the design work, with schematic plans and 3D renders soon to submitted to the City of Greater Geelong as part of a planning permit application. “The Ocean Grove foreshore and Surf Beach Complex provide significant economic, social, recreational and environmental values to the local community and all visitors to the site,” Mr McPike said. “Redeveloping the complex to provide increased levels of service for current and future generations is crucial and is broadly supported. It is envisaged that significant improvements will be

made to the facilities available for the lessee and patrons of the cafe facility.” The community will have the opportunity throughout May to comment on the proposed new building. Bellarine MP Lisa Neville attended the OGSLSC’s annual presentation night to congratulate lifesaving volunteers on their successful grants under the $15 million Emergency Services Volunteer Sustainability (ESVS) program. “Ocean Grove life savers do an incredible job and this funding will ensure they have access to the first-rate facilities they need to keep swimmers safe,” Ms Neville said.

The Barwon Coast Committee of Management (BCCM) has called for tenders for a new 21-year lease at the Dunes Cafe site of the Ocean Grove Surf Beach complex. The open public tender process, which is consistent with Victorian Government policy and direction, has been timed to co-incide with the planning phase for a significant upgrade to the complex, which will include a $271,877 State Government grant to Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club for the construction of a new patrol tower. This is in addition to the $2.675m the government has delivered for the

In other major developments, Bellarine MP Lisa Neville announced up to $272,000 in funding towards the construction of a new patrol tower as part of the club’s future re-development. Works are expected to begin in the coming months on the Ocean Grove SLSC refurbishment, which includes a major overhaul of the clubrooms and facility. Three outstanding volunteer servants were inducted as life-members at the Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club presentation night on Saturday 29 April. Recipients Bo Chudosnik, Bill Strachan and John Fitzgerald received standing ovations with the trio awarded the highest individual club honour at the end-of-season awards. Ocean Grove SLSC president David Pavia said its three new life-members had performed to an exceptional level with decades of experience and met its ‘frugal selection criteria’ for life-membership. “The reality is the Ocean Grove SLSC is very frugal in handing out life-members,” Pavia told the Voice. “It says life-membership is a great honour and so people have to perform to an outstanding level before they are considered. “So Bo (Chudosnik) obviously had extensive in patrolling and he has done enormous amount of patrol hours, his other works for the club have been in the training and assessment area where he has done a lot in First Aid, Bronze Re-qualification and Bronze Training. “Both Bill (Strachan) and Fitzy (John Fitzgerald) work in the club has been in the area of Surf Sport, they have also both been on the committee of management for lengthy periods. “In Fitzy’s case he has done a whole lot of officiating, in Bill’s case done a lot of coaching and both have done a lot of enormous hands on service to the

Facing life with pride By Justin Flynn When Bronny Di Cecco crosses the finish line in the Great Ocean Road Running Festival, she hopes it can kick start a new life for herself and for others. Bronny suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and some days are so tough, she can’t leave the house. Her son Daniel, who Bronny describes as “one of the real success stories of mental health, suffered from schizophrenia when he was 17, but is now leading a normal, happy life. She also lost her husband Joe in 2008 and life has been roller coaster since she was a child. But the 57-year-old Ocean Grover is determined to do something about it, and if in the process it can help others, then so be it. “If I can help just one person to not draw the curtains and stay at home then it will be worth it, she said. “Mental illness, whether it be PTSD, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia - there’s really nothing to be embarrassed about. Life can run smoothly and then you can hit a bump in the road and it’s part of being human. There is still a stigma attached to it. The Great Ocean Road Running Festival (formerly the Great Ocean Road Marathon) will be held on 20 and 21 May and attracts thousands of participants. Bronny did the half-marathon in

2010 in tribute to her late husband, but said this time her motivation is different. Her goal is the cross the finish line with her current partner, Mick Weller, there to see it. “He’s my inspiration now, she said. “He’s beaten prostate cancer, he has a pacemaker, but pushes through his barriers. He’s been an absolute rock for me and I want him to be at that finish line. This time I’m doing it to prove to myself that I can do it. And in the process of completing the half-marathon and putting herself out there in this article, Bronny hopes to eventually break down the barriers that surround mental illness. “It takes more bravery to talk about it than it does to keep it in, she said. “It happens without any real warning and it takes you into a place where you don’t want to be. We’re all on a fragile path in life. There is help, there is hope and there is support. It’s about extending the hand of friendship to people. For now, Bronny is finding some success in dealing with her PTSD with hypnotherapy and after the Great Ocean Road Running Festival, she plans to get back into the workforce (she had a guest role in Neighbours in the late 1990s for seven episodes, and for two episodes in Blue Heelers), and perhaps sing again (she has not sung a note since Joe died).

Bronny Di Cecco will compete in the Great Ocean Road Running Festival and hopes to raise awareness for mental health. 167799

Ian Duckworth thanks good mates Stephen ‘Chooka’ Piec and Graham ‘Boonga’ McLean for helping out with Beyondblue with the ‘Surfing Legends’ enjoying the occasion. 167971

A group of close-knit mates has helped raise $825 for Beyondblue in the form of a Baby Boomers reunion, held at Easter. The self-proclaimed and tongue-in-cheek ‘Surfing Legends’, who meet at Endless Summer regularly, organised the event for Baby Boomers to reconnect with each other. Around 150 people attending the event at the Shell Road pavilion at Easter. Group members Stephen ‘Chooka’ Piec and Graham ‘Boonga’ McLean presold about 100 tickets, but were blown away when about 50 people turned up on the day. The group describes itself as a Men’s Shed where ordinary everyday local blokes go to talk and support each other. Chooka and Boonga stepped in to help out group member Ian Duckworth, who fell ill. Ian was also involved in organising the event, and it’s not the first time his two mates have helped out. “They have both filled the breach a couple of times as organisers for Beyond Blue, he said. “The first time was the launching of my book

Many people think about becoming a volunteer - but it takes a lot of heart to become a volunteer for a Cardiac Rehabilitation Program that you have only just completed yourself. That was the case for Ocean Grove’s Shelly Westlake. After suffering angina for several years, an angiogram revealed Shelly had several blockages in her heart. She underwent a triple bypass in 2013 and then joined Bellarine Community Health’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program as part of her recovery. “When I first started the program I thought I was going to die from the exercise,” the 65-year-old said. “But each week my health got better and better and it was great to be with a group of peo-

Magda Lowey has just turned 90 and loves her life more each day. Magda has lived in Ocean Grove for 39 years after being born in Thessaloniki (Salonica), Greece, and then spending nine years in London. She is a member of the RSL, Legacy, two Probus clubs and the Bellarine Aquatic Centre, where she works out three to four times a week. “It’s been one big celebration - so many telephone calls, so many presents, but the best present of all is the love people have given to me,” Magda said. “Material things are not important when you are surrounded by so much love.” Magda has been overwhelmed with the support she has received from the Ocean Grove community. “I went in get my hair done (at Salon Utupia) and went to pay and she said ‘no, no, it’s free - happy birthday’. It would have been at least $80. Just those sorts of things - I’m very lucky,” she said. Diggers get their dues respect Ocean Grovers paid their respects to our fallen Diggers on Anzac Day. The dawn service was well attended, and the mid-morning parade and ceremony at Ocean Grove Park attracted a large gathering of over a thousand people. The 2017 Anzac Day service was opened by Ocean Grove Barwon Heads RSL Sub-Branch president Graham Fisher and was followed with a prayer by Rev Dr Jong Soo Park. Wreaths were laid by local organisations and students from local schools, and guest speaker Brad Clarke OAM delivered a fascinating speech. Service shows how they care By Justin Flynn Ahead of National Volunteer Week, Bellarine police Senior Sargeant Shane Madigan has expressed his gratitude to local volunteers who work tirelessly for the Community Support Register. A team of dedicated volunteers man a small office at the police station in Ocean Grove from 9.30am to noon Monday to Friday, making calls and checking in on people who have registered for the community care initiative.

“On behalf of Victoria Police I want to publically thank them for the role that they play for our community,” Sen Sgt Madigan said. “It’s a terrific service of reassurance to the Bellarine community and they do a wonderful job.” The volunteers check in on people who register for the service to see if they are OK and their records are stored in a safe database so that police can access their information after hours in case of an emergency.

“The information is protected and only accessible by us and the volunteers,” Sen Sgt Madigan said. “It’s terrific - the registrants are so grateful and we’re always looking for more volunteers,” volunteer Prue McDonough said. “We do get some great feedback from the people,” fellow volunteer Glenys Francis said. Local Nippers were the stars on show at the recent Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club junior presentation awards ceremony. Proud parents, family members, volunteers and Ocean Grove SLSC personnel helped celebrate the Nipper achievements for 2016/17 at the surf clubrooms on 22 April. Ocean Grove SLSC finished overall in second place with a whopping tally of 305 points at Victorian State Junior Life Saving Championships held in Warrnambool in March. Ocean Grove was the highest ranked regional-based club and recorded more points than last season’s total at the state titles, while Melbourne-based Mentone Life Saving Club won overall honours with 367 points. Outgoing Ocean Grove SLSC junior activities manager Gavin Mahoney said it was an extremely successful season with great results from the state-wide competition events alongside the club surf sport and surf ed Nippers programs. Mahoney said about 130 Nippers competed across seven Nipper carnivals held in bay and surf conditions across Victoria and at the State Championships. “We get great satisfaction celebrating our surf sport competitors achievements in the sport, as well as the life saving techniques we teach both in our surf sport and surf ed Nippers (programs),” Mahoney told the Voice. Darren Ball will take the reins from Mahoney as the new club junior activities manager for 2017/18. Surf sport co-ordinator Shane Bird will remain in the same role next season.

Big screen adventure Ocean Grove video editor Alex Evans played a major role in Tim Bonython’s epic new surf movie, The Big Wave Project: A Band of Brothers. Alex colour-graded the entire film from his office on The Terrace in collaboration with Bonython. Bonython is a surf photographer and film-maker and his latest movie is about big-wave surfing and was filmed all over the world. “It was a lot of work to do in one week,” Alex said. “Tim was here for the whole week and essentially we fitted in two weeks worth of work into one.” The movie will feature in the Australia Surf Movie Festival and will screen in 24 different venues, including Geelong, in six different states. “Being a surfer it’s something

I’m interested in and Tim shoots the most amazing stuff and is a really nice guy,” Alex said. “I probably watched the film five times in the week he was here but you have to look at it technically and not get too carried away with the actual movie. There are some pretty amazing moments that he captured.” One of the those moments was the near-death of surfer Aaron Gold, who was brought back to life by his big-wave surf ‘brothers’ on a boat after being unconscious underwater for two minutes after a wipe out at Cloudbreak, Fiji. Bonython got the entire rescue on film. The Big Wave Project: A Band of Brothers can be seen at Village Cinemas in Geelong on Saturday 3 June, at 4pm. Morning tea for cancer offers wave of support The Wave Ocean Grove Baptist Church is holding its sixth annual morning tea for cancer. The Colour Our World for Cancer morning tea is a fun event with auctions, prizes, food and of course, morning tea. “It’s a great opportunity for the community, and it brings the community together,“ church pastor Sandra Cooper said. “Fund-raising is increasing each year, and it’s really lots of fun while supporting a worthwhile cause. All of us, in some

shape or form, have been affected by cancer.“ Morning tea goers are encouraged to wear something pink or yellow. “We get tremendous support from local businesses,“ pastor Cooper said. The morning tea will be held at The Wave Ocean Grove Baptist Church on Thursday 18 May from 10am to noon and is $10 entry. Contact Sandra Cooper for bookings on 0418 890 457.

Anne Denham, Pastor Sandra Cooper, Carole Adams, Gayee Minotti, Jenny White and Barry White are all looking forward to the morning tea. 167854

If you’ve ever wanted to join the Ocean Grove on Barwon Ladies Probus Club, then now is your time. The club has 19 vacancies, the most in its 22 years of operation. Six of the original foundation members remain, but the club is searching for more members for its monthly catch up. “It’s gotten to the stage where we need more members,” life-member Margaret Gravett said. “A lot of us live alone and it’s important to have that contact with people,” president Marian Hosking said. “The group provides fellowship and friendship and wonderful outings.” Members enjoy a lunch at a local venue after every meeting and the club organises many outings and activities, including a walking group, book club, canasta games, shows at the Potato Shed, movies at Readings Cinemas, bus trips and coffee-and-cake chats. Any women interested in joining can go along to the monthly meetings, which are held on the third Wednesday of each month at St Peter’s Church Hall in Ocean Grove from 10am to noon or they contact Marian Hosking on 0439 383 927 or Anna Nicholson on 0418 171 787.

Traffic issues Grubb Road - we have raised our concern with the lack of safe pedestrian and bicycle access from Oakdene estate to Shell Road. The council and VicRoads are now investigating possible temporary solutions. VicRoads have commenced the design propose to duplicate Grubb Road, which we believe will entail community consultation. We will now commence lobbying both levels of government for the funds to actually duplicate Grubb Road from the Bellarine Highway to The Parade. Any such duplication will be on the basis of maintaining and enhancing the native vegetation along Grubb Road and installing all power lines underground. Our aim is to have construction works commence in 2019.

Let us know if you have any other traffic issues that you want us to raise with VicRoads and/or the council. Removal of Grubb Road trees The OGCA, along with others, has submitted an objection to VCAT of the removal of 700 metres of trees along Grubb Road. We have proposed an alternative design solution which will significantly reduce the number of trees to be removed. We are awaiting the developer’s response. 2017 community forums We want your suggestions as to what community forums you would like us to organise in 2017. Some suggestions have been: Developing walking/bicycle track connecting Ocean Grove with Point Lonsdale.

·

· Establishing a cultural/education

facility. So let us know your ideas. New committee members OGCA encourages people to become committee members and assist in facilitating community forums and lobby all levels of government for specific projects that will benefit Ocean Grove. The committee meets at 7pm on the first Wednesday of each month at the Ocean Grove Bowling Club board room. You are welcome to attend one of our meetings prior to becoming a committee member. We are just waiting for confirmation from our guest speaker as to a suitable date. We will keep you informed. Bite worse than its bark Having recently read alarming stories about local dog attacks in Ocean Grove I was concerned but not personally alarmed as I’d not read of any attacks on people. That was until last Saturday when I encountered such an event outside our local library. Tied up across the footpath was a

male weimaraner type dog, although initially friendly (wagging its tail) as I walked past I extended my arm and carefully patted it - this may have been a risk but what followed was quite terrifying. I proceeded to walk to the entrance of the library when the dog leapt in the air snarling before sinking its teeth into my forearm, resulting in a painful wound and an end to my peaceful Saturday morning. My concerns are that not only would someone tie a dog like that

across the footpath even if they weren’t aware of such behaviour but if a child was on the end of the attack that I received the consequences may well have been a lot graver indeed. I am using this letter as a caution to other locals and in the hope that the owner of the dog if not aware be made aware of this behaviour and take appropriate precautions before another attack occurs. Charles El-Hage, Ocean Grove.

freetime The Voice guide to arts and entertainment

Hilarity with Hannie on stage For a Mother’s Day present with a difference, tickets are now on sale for Australia’s most successful playwright Hannie Rayson’s latest performance at Drysdale’s Potato Shed venue in May. Get ready for a funny and personal evening with Australia’s most self-effacing, entertaining playwright and author Hannie Rayson who is thrilled to bring her new one woman show Hello, Beautiful! to the Bellarine on her Victorian tour. “At last, I’m excited. I can’t wait. I’ve been stuck working at home for years! I’ve been waving my plays off at Tullamarine airport for years - now it’s my turn for an adventure,” she said. In Hello, Beautiful! Rayson takes stories from her recent book of the same name and adds a few saucy tales that occurred to her later. She brings her childhood in the early ’60s to life and she looks back at her time at the vanguard of the sexual revolution. The ’70s roll in and Hannie finally moves into student accommodation, where the only place with hot water to

clean the dishes was the bath. So the dishes stayed dirty and so did they. From the early days of Theatreworks which she cofounded, to Hotel Sorrento on every school syllabus, to forays in Hollywood, Rayson presents theatre with humour, soul and biting observation. In this 60-minute show, Hannie gives an intimate look at her life and hilarious experiences. From the times when real men used to smell of beer to her relationship with journalist Michael Cathcart. Hannie Rayson is the author of 14 plays. A graduate of Melbourne University and the Victorian College of the Arts, she has an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from La Trobe University. Her plays have been performed throughout Australia and overseas, in English and in translation. Hello Beautiful! will be performed on Saturday 26 May at 8pm at the Potato Shed, 20-41 Peninsula Drive, Drysdale. Tickets can be booked at the Potato Shed or over the phone on 5251 1998 or at the City of Greater Geelong Customer Service Centre.

environment

Brimming with dam fine habitat It’s been a busy few weeks for me so I haven’t had much time to go out and about, and when I have had time to explore the Bellarine it has been pouring with rain. The rain has been very welcome, and it’s certainly great to drive around the Bellarine and see the farm dams full to overflowing. I did pop into Freshwater Lake a few times last week. Tom Fletcher told me that he saw a small flock of cattle egrets mingling with the Galloway cattle as he drove down the hill from Ocean Grove towards Point Lonsdale, so I drove down that way a few times and couldn’t see a single cattle egret. So I thought I’d visit Freshwater Lake, and it was just lovely there. I saw a large, well fed fox which didn’t thrill me, but also checked out a small flock of spiny-cheeked honeyeaters, as well as some whitenaped honeyeaters, red wattlebirds, brown thornbills, and superb fairy wrens. The highlight was spotting several mistletoebirds, both males and females (including a young female). There is an abundance of mistletoe fruit around Freshwater Lake at the moment. Mistletoebirds are found in most regions of Australia, and their preferred food is the berries produced by mistletoe. In Australia there are around 90 species of mistletoe, 70 of which are native, so mistletoebirds have a widespread food source as they can exist in a variety of climates. The flowers, fruit, nectar and leaves of mistletoe are all highly nutritious. Besides mistletoebirds, a wide range of wildlife depends on mistletoe, including koalas, sugar-

gliders, possums, birds and insects. The tradition of hanging it in the house at Christmas goes back to the times of the ancient Druids in England. It is supposed to possess mystical powers which bring good luck to the household and wards off evil spirits. It was also used as a sign of love and friendship in Norse mythology and that’s where the custom of kissing under mistletoe comes from. So if anyone wants to kiss under some mistletoe it’s worth a visit to Freshwater Lake at the mo! Mistletoe plants are semi-parasitic. They have chlorophyll in their leaves and can therefore manufacture their own food, however they need a host to provide water and support (in other words they use the host as a root system). Trees infested with mistletoe may die but this is often because the tree is already under stress. The seeds within these fruits pass through the birds’ digestive system and are excreted in a form that sticks to tree branches, which spreads the mistletoe from tree to tree. The mistletoebird is the only Australian species of bird that belongs in the flowerpecker family. Males have a blue-black head, wings and upperparts, with a bright red throat and chest and a white belly. Females are grey above, and white below, with a grey streak on the belly, and a red undertail. I have always found mistletoe birds very hard to photograph. Last year in Darwin I was on a guided birdwatching tour, and a male mistletoebird was posing at head level right in front of me, and I was so thrilled that I shook the camera and missed the photo! Duh. Therefore I

Male mistletoe bird. was determined to make amends at Freshwater Lake, but I didn’t succeed, so will have to keep plugging away until another one poses for me again. I drove my daughter to school a few times last week and drove home via Curlewis. One morning I had a close encounter with a little eagle, whistling kite, several European greenfinch, Australasian pipits, flame robins and a golden-headed cisticola - a purple patch indeed. I saw a bird that looks like a female house sparrow, but I think it’s a Horsefields bushlark. The Horsfield’s bushlark is a small (15cm) bird with a short sparrow-like bill. The upper parts are brown, red or sandy in colour. The breast is mottled or streaked and it has a buff eyebrow. I did see a young (what I think was a) collared sparrowhawk fly-

ing around Curlewis. The bird has a long middle toe, sharp cornered tail - I will let people make up their own minds to ID the bird once they see the photo. Kevin sent some photos of a few black-winged stilts taken at Lake Modewarre. I bet Lake Modewarre has a lot more water in it than the last time I visited it. Thanks Kevin for the beautiful photos. I’m looking forward to hearing John Sharp talk about his bird photography techniques on Sunday 7 May, at 8.30am, at the information centre of the OGNR. Wildcats get the better of Bears By Christina Cameron All three Bellarine Bears baseball teams went up against Lara Wildcats. Hard workout in the pre-season with new coach Cameron Brown has meant the Bears are working on all areas of the game to hopefully bring them that one flag that they have been working on for so long. The determination has improved 10-fold with the players; everyone is stepping up to take on new roles and play to the best of their ability. The teams are expecting a boost in morale with the addition of Lewis Weldon, Australian softball player and Division Two batting average winner of the 2016/2017 Victorian Summer Baseball Season, Brock Wells, who has chosen to move to the club from Guild Lions for the opportunity of more playing time as well as returning assistant coach Chris Bramwell after a serious accident a few years ago. Prospects are high as the players put in more time over the coming weeks and months to improve their game, with the end game being that longed-for flag for the proud club. Starting off was the A Reserve side. Matthew Sage couldn’t seem to catch a break on the mound, walking nine of the 18 batters who faced him with seven runs being scored off his two innings including some errors made in the field. David Morrissey then took charge and shut down Lara with four strikeouts and the field seemed to change their style, not making a single error and getting the outs that the side needed to pick up their spirits. This wasn’t enough for the Bears, as they went down 8-5 to an in-form Lara side, with great pitching from Chris Lewis and runs from a number of players. Hits for the day came from Brad O’Brien, Geoff Rome, John Trevean, Chris Hockey, and David Morrissey. The second game at home was an absolute nail-biter between both sides in A Grade. Both sides had to fight hard for their four runs apiece. Lachlan Hockey and Simon Murry provided a great combination on the mound for the Bears while the Wildcats struggled to find consistency after a great start from Cameron Forbes. Both sides struggled to convert any hits that were made, but this just proves that both sides had some great pitching and even better fielding to back them up. This resulted in a draw for the game, but it was hard fought for both sides. Hits for the game went to Cameron Brown, Lewis Weldon and Simon Murry. Finally, the last game for the weekend was the C Grade game was closely fought until the end of the game. Paul Cameron for the Bears and Dan Wilson for the Wildcats both lasted the majority of the game on the mound for their teams and then swapped with Peter Hockey (Bears) and Christian Lackovic (Wildcats) for the final innings. Unfortunately for the Bears, Cameron tired quickly towards the end and with a few errors in the field, Lara was able to get quite a few runs and run out eventual winners. Best players for the day for the Bears were Paul Cameron, Peter Hockey and Finn Ferguson-Cummings. Want to find out more? Grubbers go for goals By Mark Heenan Ocean Grove star forward and star recruit Jake Carmody booted seven goals in the Grubbers’ comfortable 48-point win over Drysdale on 30 April at Mortimer Oval. It was the Grubbers second victory in successive weeks after its comprehensive 97-point win a week earlier under lights against Newcomb in round four. The solid win saw Ocean Grove maintain fourth spot with a 3-2 record after five rounds. Final scores Ocean Grove 21.17 (143) to Drysdale 14.11 (95). Alongside Carmody, Ocean Grove playing assistant coach and gun midfielder Brent Macleod recovered from a corked calf over Newcomb to finish with six majors. The round-five clash saw the senior comeback of Grubber captain and star leader Kelly Williams. Williams had an interrupted pre-season due to a back injury with his first official hit-out in the club’s reserves game against Newcomb on 22 April. Williams said it was nice to contribute in the eight-goal win. “Instead of helping on the sidelines, where you get more nervous watching a game, it was good to contribute on the field,” Williams told the Voice. “It has been a slow process, but it has been the back that has kept me out. It had kept re-occurring just as I thought I was coming good at least three of four times.” Star Grubber on-baller James Linton booted two goals, while Daniel Maloney and Daniel Freeman both kicked two majors. An eight-goal third quarter helped put the victory beyond doubt for Ocean Grove, silky Grubber utility Corey Walter gathered plenty of the footy and was named in best players. Drysdale was competitive early though it lost the services of captain Daniel Jull, who was sent to hospital after he was knocked out. The Hawks had a five-day break after the club’s won traditional Anzac Day clash against Portarlington on 25 April. Drysdale power forward Josh Rushton kicked five goals for the home side, while Jakob Kiddle booted three goals. In the reserves clash Drysdale defeated Ocean Grove by 46 points. Final scores Drysdale 14.13 (97) to Ocean Grove 7.9 (51) Grubber Fletcher Sharrock kicked two goals. After five rounds, Ocean Grove was in seventh position with a 1-4 record. Yet another loss in battle By Mark Heenan Ocean Grove was left to ponder its fortunes after plummeting to a 10-goal loss after Barwon Heads outplayed the Grubbers at Ray Menzies Oval on 6 May. The Grubbers have some soul searching to do with a league bye this weekend, before facing Queenscliff at home on 20 May. It was a stark contrast for home side after Ocean Grove booted 21 goals against an injury-riddled Drysdale at Mortimer Oval a week earlier. The Seagulls have won the last six Battle of the Bridge contests. Barwon Heads dominated from the outset and led by 20 points at the first break. The Seagulls could have easily been further in front after missing some simple set shots at goal prior to quarter time. It was a lacklustre performance from Paul Lynch’s men as the Seagulls chased and tackled better and were much harder and stronger at the footy than the Grubbers. Remarkably, Barwon Heads kept the inaccurate Ocean Grove goalless in the second and third quarters. Ocean Grove forward Daniel Maloney kicked the Grubbers’ only major in the final term. Grubber veteran Liam Rock played in his first senior match since Round 18 last season. Barwon Heads playing coach Mitch Herbison booted three goals, while team-mate Dylan Holland finished with two majors. Ocean Grove senior coach Paul Lynch did not return the Voice’s call when asked for a comment.

In the reserves game, Barwon Heads defeated a competitive Ocean Grove by 31 points. The Grubbers led the Seagulls by five points at half time, but the visitors recovered after the main break and kicked six goals to two. Final scores Barwon Heads 8.10(58) to Ocean Grove 4.3(27). Grubber James Peers found some form following his stint in the seniors and was named in the best players with his two goals. In the Under 18 Colts, Ocean Grove 1 won the Battle of the Bridge clash against Barwon Heads by 11 points - Ocean Grove 8.6(54) to Barwon Heads 6.7(43). Zane Leist booted three goals, while Grubber teammate Tom Ryan kicked two majors and increased his goal tally 18 from six matches. Ocean Grove 2 won its Colts game against Belmont Lions, 13.5(83) to 6.12(48). Reed Jordan booted four goals for the Grubbers. In other developments, the Ocean Grove region will get its first taste of a major women’s Victorian Football League fixture this Saturday 13 May. The Geelong Women’s VFL team will host the Seaford Tigerettes in their Round 2 clash at Ray Menzies Oval at Shell Road. Game starts at 1pm and entry is free. SENIORS SCOREBOARD BARWON HEADS 11.16(82) def OCEAN GROVE 2.10(22) Ocean Grove Goals: D. Freeman, D. Maloney. Best: A. Jarvis, P. Hardy, D. Freeman, O. Monteith.
