Death rocks family
(Rebecca Hosking)
Friends, family and strangers have paid tribute to Geelong soldier Jason Challis who was killed in an army training exercise in Darwin on Wednesday. Mr Challis’s family released a statement yesterday afternoon describing him as a cheeky and loving son. “Our beautiful boy has gone,” it read. “His personality pleased and brought so many people together. Everyone he met loved him and fell in love with him.” “Jason was the best son, step-son, brother and mate you could ever ask for. Rest in peace, our darling Jason, we love you forever.” People from around Australia joined the fallen soldier’s family and friends in paying tribute to him. “My thoughts go out to all who knew him and served

‘Deja review’ looms over plan to axe mayoral vote By Luke Voogt Upper house MPs could stop the State Government from abolishing Geelong’s mayoral vote, according shadow local government minister David Davis. The coalition would consider joining forces with the Greens to defeat the government’s bill stripping residents of their vote for mayor, he said. The coalition and greens previously united on Geelong’s council in the upper house last year when they stopped the government appointing administrators until 2020. The parties forced the government to instead hold council elections in October 2017 after sacking the city’s councillors in April 2016. The coalition would consider the bill introduced this week “in a very methodical way”, Mr Davis told the Indy. “We’ll be talking with all the smaller parties to
find points of commonality.” The coalition wanted Geelong to retain its direct mayoral election “but more in the (style of the) Melbourne model,” Mr Davis said. He accused Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins of trying to “ram” the bill through parliament after moving that parliament debate to only one day after its second reading. Debating “on the fly” a bill guiding the future of Victoria’s second city would be “extraordinary“, Mr Davis said. “Ms Hutchins is either incompetent and blundered the legislative process, or intended to force the bill though the lower house.” Ms Hutchinson backed down, with her office confirming that parliament would debate the bill after the customary two weeks. The bill would give Geelong the “council it deserves”, she said. Returning to the system of councillors choos-

ing the mayor would ensure they worked “as a team”. The sacked council was “unable to provide long-term vision and lacked the leadership required to manage Geelong’s major challenges”, Ms Hutchins said. The government based the bill on the recommendations of a Geelong Citizens’ Jury, she said. “We trust the people of Geelong to know how to improve their council and this legislation makes their views law.” The government allowed the jury to consider two models for the mayoral vote: the existing or previous system. The jury was unable to recommend a third model, such as Melbourne’s system. The bill also includes a council structure of 11 councillors from four wards, effective from October’s elections
Geelong’s rail line is set for duplication between the city’s south and Waurn Ponds stations after this week’s federal budget allocated $100 million to the project. Liberal MP Sarah Henderson used the announcement to call on Victoria for a “budgeted commitment” toward its share of the funding for the project.
Cats scratched The Cats are “obviously disappointed” after the AFL refused to make room for a Geelong senior women’s team in 2018, according to club chief Brian Cook. The Cats made a “good case” for expanding the AFLW competition but would not continue working on the club’s “investment” in its VFL women’s team, Cook said.
Prison unlawful The Andrews Government has unlawfully held teenagers in Lara’s Barwon Prison, the Supreme Court has ruled. The second court ruling against the transferring and holding teens at the adult prison has forced the government to find another centre for detaining juveniles following damage to youth facilities during inmate riots last year.
Jetski goes Thieves have stolen a jetski and trailer worth around $10,000 from a residential property at Indented Head, according to police. Police alleged that “unknown offenders” stole the Seadoo, registred MQ 542, from the Amalfi Way residence sometime between 4 and 6 May.

Medico out to meet and greet - in his fluent Russian By Luke Voogt Sri Lankan expat Sameera Gunawardena has been putting his Russian fluency to a unique use by visiting Geelong’s elderly. The 36-year-old Grovedale doctor spoke to the Indy Tuesday during National Volunteer Week. “Loneliness is the worst thing,” he said. “It’s a good thing for them to share their memories.” Sameera studied medicine in Moscow for seven years before moving to Australia five years ago to study immunology.
For the last seven months he has been visiting an elderly Russian lady in Geelong who speaks very little English, through Australian Multicultural Community Services. “It’s hard to find a volunteer who speaks Russian,” he said. “I’m learning so many things from her, like Russian culture and history.” “I feel happy if I make someone else happy and at the same time I’m improving my Russian.” Sameera said society sometimes neglected the
elderly and that their families couldn’t keep them company all the time. He added elderly people should mix with people of all ages. “They were young once and they still have a lot of youth in their minds.” Sameera encouraged Geelong residents to donate a bit of their time to the service’s program. “Anyone with a bit of time can join us and make a difference to someone else’s life,” he said. “There are many other people in Geelong who just need someone to talk to.”

FROM THE FUTURE: Geelong council administrators Laurinda Gardner, Kathy Jackson and Peter Dorling.
Meanwhile, possibly lost in all the brouhaha was the message of local rapper Fatty Phew, which sounds like a good name for a roadhouse baine-marie. ‘Stop seein’ us as a problem and start helpin’ with ours,’ he raps in contemporary victimhood style. So, according to the funded Phewster, the situation in the mall is our fault. Not the fault of the miscreants swearing, fighting, spitting and generally running amok. At the risk of starting some kind of duelling
rap-rock showdown, Double Take would like to respond to the mallrats situation with the words of the great George Thorogood. ‘Get a haircut and get a real job’. They may only have a few opportunities to spotlight AFL games each year but at least Kardinia Park’s light towers now have another use: training rescue teams. Onlookers gasped last Friday as fire-fighters hung suspended from the 73-metre towers during “high-angle rescue training” with other emergency service crews. The session allowed the crews to learn the ropes - while learning how to use each other’s ropes, explained the CFA’s Tony Field. The crews worked on systems for saving people stranded on structures such as Melbourne’s ferris wheel and wind turbines. “When our ladder platforms can’t bring them down we have to lower them down,” Mr Field said. And now when they get down, they can also thank the Kardinia Park lights! Well, Geelong’s $645,000 vision looks set we’re going to be a Clever and Creative CityRegion. That was the outcome of last week’s Our Vision talkfest at The Pier, which hosted more than 300 participants to choose one of four paths forward for Geelong following consultations involving 16,000 contributors. The crowd at Saturday’s Our Vision Assembly overlooked the preferred vision of Geelong’s three council administrators, for a Caring City-Region, going with the clever, creative option instead. Which begs the question: if Geelong’s future is “clever and creative“, what are we now? Stupid and uncreative? Over to you, administratoroonies.

Many commenters are aghast at City Hall’s funding of a rap song dedicated to Geelong mallrats - but they certainly can’t argue with the return on investment. After all, like it or not, the whole point, according to City Hall, was “getting people to think and talk” about the mall and central Geelong. Well, think and talk they sure did, with the City initiative inspiring hundreds of social media posts and news reports spanning the length of the land. Even Melbourne’s Channel 9 news had a crack, travelling down the Westgate to film locals in the mall for a smirking report to return to smirking presenters Peter Hitchener and Tony Jones. So, full marks to City Hall for starting the conversation - but a whole lot less for what it ended up being about!

Closing libraries ‘not creative or clever’ By Luke Voogt Campaigners are stepping up their fight stop City Hall from closing three libraries and are holding a community meeting at Chilwell Library tomorrow (Saturday). “We’re extremely committed to keeping this library open,” campaigner Lynne Dowling said. “You can’t measure the value of this hub to this community. Up until now the council has always fought to keep the library open and realised how valuable a community asset it is.” Council’s only notice the library would close was a message for 10 days on its website, Ms Dowling said, “which most people don’t read”. Ms Dowling said the council administrators’ emphasis on public consultation was hypocritical. “They’ve consulted for nine months for the 30-year vision for Geelong’s future and spent a day coming up with a clever and creative city. We

don’t think closing three libraries is clever and creative.” City Hall said closing the Chilwell, Highton and Barwon Heads libraries would save $300,000. About 50 people gathered at Highton Library on Sunday to protest against its closure. Former councillor Ron Nelson said1000 people had signed a petition to keep the library open. Highton campaigner Jacqui Bennett said many students and elderly residents relied on the library. “For some users the librarian is the only person they speak to for the day.” Council minutes say Highton Library met all standards for viability in the last financial year. Administrators chair Kathy Alexander said Geelong had one of Australia’s highest concentrations of libraries. “These three libraries recorded the least visits per hour, loans per hour, internet sessions per PC and collections turnover,” she said.

Mallrats did “a great job in getting people to think and talk” about central Geelong’s “possibilities”, Mr Luxford said. Geelong musician Shaun Fogarty created Mallrats under rap name Fatty Phew. The video has attracted thousands of views on You Tube. The song includes the lyrics, ‘You find us lurkin’ the streets and sittin’ on benches, face from the papers, our names scribbled on fences ... Stop seein’ us as a problem, and start helpin’ with ours’. The song was “not glorifying or condoning that lifestyle“, Mr Fogarty posted on his Fatty Phew Facebook page. “And (it) definitely is not placing judgement on anyone and people would know that if they listened,“ he wrote. “It is actually about wanting more and (being) able to achieve more with the right supports.“ But Mr Fogarty was unsurprised to see social media users “vomit ignorance and foul judgements“ about Mallrats, he posted.

“Disenfranchised” mallrats need the support of Geelong’s “caring community”, according to a City Hall manager. Brett Luxford was responding to widespread criticism of Geelong’s council this week for funding a rap song defending young people frequenting the mall as victims of “broken homes”. City Hall and state body Creative Victoria provided almost $25,000 for a video of the Mallrats song and two others in a project to inspire new perceptions of Geelong. Mallrats was popular with viewers on YouTube but news reports prompted a public backlash, with many social media users slamming the council for funding the video and others accusing the content of glorifying anti-social behaviour. A lesser number of comments supported council and the video for addressing issues confronting some youths in the Lt Malop St mall. The video and backlash made national headlines, including TV news interviews of people in the mall criticising the area and other users for bad behaviour. Mallrats was part of the Connecting Songs project to help people “think about Geelong and our region in a different way”, Mr Luxford said. “The Mallrats song is a really good way of getting people to engage with the mall and think about the space. It encourages us to think about some of the challenges the people who occupy some of our streets face,” Mr Luxford said. “The song helps us to understand that some of the people who use the mall are marginalised and need our support. “They are disenfranchised people who are part of our community, and we need to do everything we can to include them in our community. “We are a caring community.” The Connecting Songs project responsible for

Being confined to hospital didn’t stop North Geelong’s Bette Pitman from living her dream. The tech-savvy great-grandmother made the best of a bad situation with an idea for a children’s book several years ago. “I was bored to tears and I looked out the window at the clouds and saw some shapes like faces, so I scribbled down the first story,” she said. “After that I was looking for someone to illustrate it, but it was hard to find someone with the right style at an affordable price.” “I’ve always liked writing and painting, so I decided to do the pictures myself. Once I got started painting it got better as I went along. Recently Mrs Pitman published three illustrat-
ed short stories in The Adventures of Claude the Cloud, proving it’s never too late to chase dreams. “I’ve always loved kids so I did it for my greatgrandchildren, but everyone else has said they liked it,’ she said, “They all want me to sign it.” Having already self-published with a Melbourne-based printer, Mrs Pitman said living in an aged care facility would not stop her pursuit of a publishing deal. “The book has given me something to work towards. My legs have deteriorated but I’ve still got my mind. “I’ve got my computer, I’m on Facebook and emails, so I’m never bored by myself.”
APPLY FOR LOCAL INDUSTRY FUNDS FOR TRANSITION Applications are sought from companies looking to invest in job creating projects in the Geelong region. Court change to aid rape victims By Luke Voogt New communication specialists could help rape victims achieve justice, according Barwon Centre Against Sexual Assault (CASA). Barwon CASA’s Janice Watt said the changes could prevent trials not proceeding due to the victim being too traumatised to appear in court. “What we do know is it’s incredibly difficult to go through the court process. We’re very supportive of any new measures that can support victims in court.” In November 2015 three men allegedly raped a 14-year-old girl at St Albans. But charges against them were withdrawn earlier this year when the victim was too traumatised to appear in court.
lion introducing intermediaries to help victims give evidence to police and in court, similar to the UK’s legal system. “There are some good indications from the UK,” Ms Watt said. “Any additional support can only be for the better. We would hope those people would have particular skills working with young people.” State Government will spend a further $25.9m, with $6m to investigate systemic issues victims experience and $18.9 million to recruit more social workers. Anyone who has experienced sexual assault can phone Barwon CASA on 5222 4318.
“To have to re-live that (experience) through the court process is often something victims don’t want to put themselves and their families through,” Ms Watt said. “The court process is a very adversarial one. Often (the victims) can be made to feel ashamed of what happened and blame themselves. “Often with sexual assault there are no other witnesses. Men who perpetrate the crime do it deliberately so there are no witnesses.” Ms Watt said rape could make victims feel more violated than other crimes. “It’s an intensely personal experience. You’re hardly going to feel as ashamed about your car being stolen.” The State Government will spend $2.6 mil-

The project would add 125 beds to existing homes for 260 on the site, TLC Healthcare chief Lou Pascuzzi said. “Homestead Estate was the first residential aged care home in the TLC group, so we are delighted to finally be able to commence work on its redevelopment,” Mr Pascuzzi said. “This redevelopment project will not only provide a boost for construction employment in the Geelong area, it will also employ around 150 aged care staff on an ongoing basis.”

Karina joined the City almost three years ago. Her job helps young people to effect positive change within their local communities through environmental leadership and action.
The City is one of Australia’s largest and most complex local councils, delivering over 126 different community and business services. So no wonder we’re often in the news. But sometimes, you only get half the story.
Karina’s work with the Green Effect Movement (GEM), a group of young people who share her passion for environmental sustainability, is a first for our Youth Development unit. Her role in helping to set up the group saw her nominated for a Green Achiever Award last year.

AERIAL MOSQUITO TREATMENTS FINISH FOR 2016–17 SEASON To protect endangered birds that migrate to wetlands on the Bellarine Peninsula in winter, the City has concluded its aerial mosquito treatment program for the 2016–17 season. Our helicopter successfully treated mosquito breeding sites across nearly 2000 hectares – more than double the area treated in 2015–16.

Dr Kathy Alexander, Laurinda Gardner and Peter Dorling have been appointed by the State Government as the City of Greater Geelong’s Administrators, replacing the traditional Mayor and Councillor structure as your local government representatives. The Administrators, chaired by Dr Alexander, are holding a series of community engagement meetings across the region. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday 17 May at Ocean Grove Bowling Club, 18 The Terrace, Ocean Grove. Engagement is a key step in strengthening partnerships within the community, and with local government, to develop a unified long-term strategic plan for our region.
Construction for Revitalising Central Geelong’s Laneways Project is starting. We’re enhancing West End, along Little Malop Street, James Street and Shorts Place, between Moorabool and Gheringhap Streets. There’ll be new streetscapes, alfresco spaces, seating, more trees and plants, public art and improved lighting to enhance this vibrant precinct.
All businesses will be open during works. Pedestrians are encouraged to continue to shop, dine and wander through the area as it transforms. The area will only be open to delivery and resident vehicles, so we encourage customers to park in nearby streets. The free Love Central Geelong App lists all parking in the CBD and availability in real time.

Help prevent mosquitoes from breeding around your home by regularly emptying containers that hold water, like pot plant bases, buckets and toys. This is especially important after heavy rain. If mosquito numbers are high, protect yourself by covering your arms and legs and using an effective insect repellent. Our aerial treatments will resume after 15 August, as directed by the Commonwealth Government. For more information about the our mosquito management program, visit our website on

After becoming a teenage mother and dropping out in Year 10, Norlane’s Danelle Vanos faced the daunting challenge of re-entering the workforce at age 24. Danelle gave birth to son Logan at 17 and a few years later became a full time carer for her mother, who has a degenerative brain disease. “I wanted to be around for him when he was younger,” she told The Indy on Monday. “But he’s old enough now and I need to work on my life to better his.” Danelle had no work experience, aside from delivering catalogues, while looking after Logan - mostly as a single parent. “I’ve always struggled with social anxiety,” she said. “I never left the house - I was so depressed. I had nothing to work on and nothing to look forward to. “No one really wants to hire you if you’ve got no qualifications or experience.” But a Barwon Water traineeship through Geelong’s Northern Futures has given her the confidence to pursue work. “If I hadn’t got up that morning and gone to Northern Futures I would probably still be at home,” she said. Danelle got a first-hand look at four departments and helped with the water authority’s myriad of contracts. “It was amazing to see,” she said. “I thought that water just comes out of the tap but there’s so much more that goes on behind the scenes.” Danelle completed her Certificate III in Busi-
ness during the eight month job and met “the people I needed to meet”. She said Barwon Water was very flexible when she had to care for Logan. “Everyone here is so positive and friendly,” she said. “I would love to work here again.” She finished the traineeship on 2 May and hoped to find work at a florist or in the community with her newfound confidence. “Now I’ve got something on my resume,” she said. Danelle said Northern Future’s work was vital in Geelong’s north. “I see every day that people are struggling,” she said. “I’ve been lucky to have so much support but so many people don’t.” But the gig was no free ride. “You’ve got to help yourself,” Danelle said. Danelle worked for Barwon Water as part of municipal alliance G21’s Geelong Regional Opportunities for Work (GROW) program. Last week G21 published its ‘report card’ on GROW, which said it had produced 145 jobs in the 2015/16 financial year. According to statistics from 22 of GROW’s 58 signatories, the program had caused a spending shift of 9.34 per cent, or $23.88 million, to local procurement. This meant one job for every $140,000, according to GROW director Anne O’Brien. “But it’s only just the beginning,” she said. GROW aims to create a seven per cent spending shift in the whole region by 2020, bringing $1 billion and 2500 jobs to the region. “Imagine when we have hundreds of signatories,” Ms O’Brien said. “It’s absolutely achievable.”
Live-fire training death rocks family From page 1 The 26-year-old former Grovedale College student was reportedly taking part in a live-fire exercise when he was wounded. He received immediate first aid at the scene and paramedics airlifted him to the Royal Darwin Hospital for treatment. An Australian Defence Force (ADF) statement said the Army had notified the soldier’s next of kin and was supporting them through their grief. “The Army and ADF community extends its deepest sympathies to the soldier’s family and friends,” the statement read. “It is a deep shock to the organisation and will be felt by the broader Army family.” The Army suspended training activities across its combat brigades to review its safety measures.
“The Chief of Army and Army commanders acknowledge the gravity of this and recent incidents and take all matters relating to personnel and training very seriously,” the statement read. Northern Territory police were investigating the incident and will prepare a report for the Northern Territory Coroner. The ADF was assisting police with their inquiries. Craig Garraway from Northern Territory St John Ambulance told the ABC that Mr Challis arrived at Royal Darwin Hospital at about 2.30pm. “I am led to believe that he did have a head injury of some description,“ Mr Garraway said. Unconfirmed reports said the Mr Challis sustained a gunshot wound to the head and later died of heart failure, but ADF Media has refused to confirm the claims. 9 GEELONG INDY Friday, 12 May, 2017

Heads, you win for big house prices Barwon Heads has retained its title as Victoria’s most expensive town for housing, according to latest real estate data. The town’s media price in the March quarter climbed to $908,750, said Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV). Barwon Heads outstripped the Melbourne median of $826,000 and was more than double the overall figure for regional Victoria, $377,000. Torquay also had “high house prices” with a median of $707,500, the REIV said. “This is almost $80,000 higher than the median house price in Melbourne’s outer suburbs. “Meanwhile, Geelong’s median house price broke the $700,000 barrier for the first time in the March quarter with a median of $701,000.
“This was followed closely by Newtown which recorded a median house price of $699,000 in the first three months of the year.” Local towns and suburbs also with prices “well-above” the statewide median included Point Lonsdale, on $657,500, Geelong West, $585,000, and Highton, $583,500. The REIV expected further price growth in region Victoria. “Significant infrastructure commitments announced by the State Government (in last week’s state budget) will undoubtedly continue to improve the attractiveness of regional Victoria, driving price growth in areas further from the city,” the REIV said.

Locals going big on memorial day Other surfers among the invited 18 include internationally renowned big-wave surfers Tony Ray and Ross Clarke Jones, alongside other locals Greg Brown, Geoff Sweeney, Nic Muscoft and Adam Roberston. Brooks was looking forward to the challenge. “Bells at 12 foot is a serious wave,” he said. “The wave has so much power at that size that it’ll be a big test for the guys out there. They’ll need some big boards and some big tickers.” Brooks said he was thrilled with the level of local support for the event in memory of his brother. “The support from the Surf Coast has been amazing. Loads of locals, businesses and the Surf Coast Shire have donated time and money to the cause.” Surfing Victoria said the title of the one-day contest was a “cheeky” reference to 1990s movie Point Break, which was partly filmed in the area and which told of legendary 50-year storm surf at Bells. The event would raise money for charities Headspace and One in Five, Surfing Victoria said. · Lifeline offers free counselling services on 13 11 14.

The region’s best big-wave surfers hope to compete at Bells Beach this winter in honour of a local champion who died too young. Surfing Victoria said the field for the Bells Beach 50 Year Storm Invitational would include family and friends of Shaun Brooks who took his own life in 2012 after a battle with depression. Surfing Victoria made his younger brother, Troy Brooks, number-one on the invitational list. “Our family is stoked that a bunch of Shaun’s mates have come together to put on not just an awesome memorial surfing event but also driving support for mental health and youth suicide prevention,” said Brooks, a former World Championship Tour competitor. “Shaun was always at home in big waves and especially loved Bells Beach, so it’s great to have an event where he’d be in his element at big Bells.” Organisers would call on the event when surf at Bells reached a minimum four metres between 1 June and 31 August, Surfing Victoria said. “The format for the event is very different to a typical contest. When the event is called on all 18 surfers will paddle out and surf together for four hours with the winner being the surfer judged to have charged the hardest.”

PARENTING AS A TEAM
Homegrown hero
How can two parents describe their differences, talk about them in a calm and constructive way, and then work out a common approach that is consistent, that works, and satisfies both parents?
By Luke Voogt When South Geelong’s Anna Burke heard about a shortage of foster carers in Victoria, she knew she had to get involved. “I don’t have any kids of my own, so this was a way of me being able to do that,” she told the Indy. “When you hear something like that, you don’t make a call unless you’ve been thinking about it for a while.” Early last year Anna heard a radio segment about the state’s struggling child protection system. “I think they needed 300 carers just to work with the number of children they already had.” So Anna, who works full-time in disability, signed up to Fostering Connections in early 2016 and became accredited in April. Since then she has looked after seven children, including a 16-year-old boy for the majority of the time. “I enjoy seeing him grow and develop in the skills and interests that he has.” Anna describes her futsal-loving foster child as “a quiet but very intelligent young man”, despite his mild intellectual disabilities. “If you were to meet him going down the street you wouldn’t have any idea. He’s a polite young 16-year-old.” He also had a special relationship with her dad, she said. “He goes to chess with dad because I’m not really interested in it. When he returns home his face is alight.” Anna said age, work, relationship status and disability need not be barriers to aspiring carers. “(Those things have) nothing to do to with their ability to care for kids,” she said. “It’s more to do with the mindset they bring to being a carer. “The main challenge for me is how to fit in full time work but that’s the same for anyone who has to look after children.” Anna also had a special interest in Indigenous children, who were “over-represented in the child protection system”.
When we become parents we find ourselves in a new role and a new set of circumstances. Most parents learn the skills they need “on the job”, and at times it can feel like one is learning at the “deep end”.
It is fair to say that learning to work together to build a shared approach is no mean feat! Date: Time: Location: Cost:

TUNING INTO KIDS A PROGRAM FOR PARENTS OF CHILDREN AGED 4 TO 8 YRS Tuning in to Kids is a six session parenting program designed to foster children’s emotional development – by building their emotional intelligence and resilience.
CARING: Anna Burke says being a foster carer is incredibly rewarding. 168051 (Luke Voogt) “I have worked with a young Aboriginal child who’s seven now. We need carers who are interested in keeping kids connected to their culture.” Anna was one of MacKillop Family Service’s 80 foster carers in Geelong. “It’s an incredibly rewarding experience - it doesn’t matter how long you have a child with you, you will make some sort of impact on their life.” But Geelong needs more, said MacKillop’s Anna Masci. “Some need care for just one night and others require long-term carers.” They must be able to provide a safe and supportive environment, she said. “We have some incredible people. Anna (Burke) is a very competent, passionate and insightful carer who always puts the children’s needs first.” While foster carers donate their time, MacKillop reimburses costs for looking after children and offers 24/7 support. To find out more, phone MacKillop Family Services on 1300 791 677 or Fostering Connections 1800 013 088.
Children develop greater emotional awareness and ability to regulate their own emotions and solve problems as they arise. Letters Old drivers pass test Again we read suggestions that elderly drivers should pass a driving test (Geelong Indy, 5 April) Just because someone, young or old, passes a test does not make them a better or a good driver. All it does is prove they could pass the test. As the RACV stated, a lot has to do with the health and physical wellbeing of the driver, which can also be true of all ages. I am 83 and still driving well, as my family has assured me. They have agreed to tell me when and if they feel I am unsafe on the roads, as we had to do, in consultation with various doctors and nurses, who all agreed, when my husband was on heaps of medication and was not alert enough to keep driving. Surely family members who see people all the time would notice when they are getting beyond driving and could discuss this with them. I knew of a lady of 96 who passed her test okay but was a menace on the roads. I also know of a man of 96 who is brilliant, alert and totally with it. Possibly an assessment would be more logical than a driving test. Doctors should also be able to tell when their patients are getting feebler or when medication might make them a danger, and to warn family members to watch out for them. B Kavanagh St Leonards
Administrators’ libraries disgrace Two small libraries are mooted for closure, Chilwell and Highton. In some sort of compensation, two new libraries are mooted for Leopold and Armstrong Creek. I recognise that residents of the new suburbs deserve facilities as part of the wonderful Geelong Regional Library service, but I deplore the closure of the branches serving the older suburbs. Geelong’s council administrators decided this without input from the affected communities. The people who visit these welcoming, important hubs will be denied their services. Many of the visitors are unable to travel to other branches conveniently - try getting to a library far from home while pushing a stroller with a couple of small children, or

Outside City Hall as part of Geelong After Dark festival were hundreds of open books with candlelit statements extolling the virtues of Geelong as a friendly, people-centred, forward-thinking community. Driving missed daily Top marks to all motorists who used the Colac Road/Pigdons Road intersection at Waurn Ponds as the traffic lights were non-operational for several hours on 29 April. With some trepidation, I used the intersection twice within an hour and was delighted to find that, because everyone used courtesy and common sense, the traffic flowed like it was choreographed. Politicians are pushing barrels with not much new pork inside. Planning is never sensible. For example, Marshall railway station should have been close to TorquayRoad with room to park 1000 cars coming from the Bellerine Peninsula. We in South Geelong have more than 1000 cars parked at the station spilling over onto our streets on bin days. Finding a gap is a problem when the two bins per house equal half a car-length. Then we have a single track to the main railway station, which is inadequate even for the bus exchange. The best measuring stick of how good is public transport is the number of cars and taxies about, with the less the better, and that goes for every city on Earth. Egbert Ruseler South Geelong

I am looking forward to dressing in pink again - for a good cause. I will join more than 100,000 people around Australia in the annual Mother’s Day Classic fun run/ walk. Now in its 20th year, the event raises money for National Breast Cancer Foundation. Since 1994 the foundation has given $140 million to nearly 500 Australian-based research projects investigating how to defeat breast cancer. All of the money was raised by the public. As the foundation’s biggest donor, the Mother’s Day Classic has raised more than $30 million, which is exceptional. The event is organised by extraordinary people for extraordinary people. We all know families impacted by breast cancer, developed by one in eight women and one in 700 men. For the men and women who need help, please take the opportunity to either donate or participate in this fun event on 14 May. A good place to start is the event website, mothersdayclassic.com.au. Fair go gone I’m devastated the Turnbull Government again cut overseas aid in the budget. Australia’s aid budget is at its lowest level even though we are an extremely wealthy nation. Cutting aid to people living in absolute poverty is unfair, short-sighted and lacks humanity. It harms real people and also goes against the great Australian value of providing a fair go for all, especially for those in desperate need. Like many in Geelong, I believe that the budget should prioritise people who are most disadvantaged, both nationally and in our global community. Robert Van Zetten Highton

2017 GEELONG BUSINESS EXCELLENCE AWARDS Free seminars to foster excellence
Geelong Chamber of Commerce’s Kelli Finlayson and Bernadette Uzelac join head judge Simon Flowers to call for final entries to the business excellence awards.
Awards entries to soar Excitement is building in the offices of Geelong’s chamber of commerce as the closing date for this year’s Powercor Geelong Business Excellence Awards draws closer. Entries for Geelong’s premier annual business awards close 4pm Monday 22 May. With almost 350 businesses from around the region nominated for this year’s awards, Geelong Chamber of Commerce chief Bernadette Uzelac is excited at the potential final entry numbers. “This year’s awards has seen unprecedented levels of interest from Geelong and regional businesses,” she says. “I’m confident we will receive a record number of entries this year. Indications are that this year is shaping up to be the biggest in the
awards’ 32-year history.” The winners of the 2017 Powercor Geelong Business Excellence Awards will be announced at a gala presentation dinner on 17 August. This year the chamber has partnered Australian Institute of Management (AIM) in a boost to a pair of new award categories. Winners of Business Leader of the Year and Young Entrepreneur of the Year will be shortlisted as finalists for the Victorian finals of the prestigious AIM Leadership Excellence Awards. The new categories have generated much interest, with the annual AIM Leadership Excellence Awards (ALEAs) regarded as the peak national award program recognising and celebrating Australia’s most outstanding leaders.
“We introduced the Business Leader of the Year and the Young Entrepreneur of the Year awards this year to recognise and shine a spotlight on the outstanding calibre of leaders and young entrepreneurs in Geelong,” Ms Uzelac says. “We are very fortunate to have many outstanding leaders and young entrepreneurs in the Geelong business community who are passionate, innovative and forward-thinking about their businesses and teams.” The Geelong awards now have 21 categories, covering a wide range of sectors and activities across the Geelong business community. Geelong Busienss Excellence Awards entries and more information are available at gbea.com. au.
The Geelong Indy will host free marketing seminars next month to celebrate the paper’s Geelong Business Awards sponsorship. Each 50-minute seminar on 19 June will provide participants with expert advice and ideas on achieving success. “The Geelong Indy Business Excellence Seminar is not to be missed for anyone serious about achieving ongoing revenue growth,” says the Indy’s managing editor, Tony Galpin. “We’re bringing down a nationally recognised guest speaker with a passion for helping small business. His Tony Galpin presentation is excellent - and the Indy’s putting it on for free.” The seminar will run several times on the day, offering various attendance-time options for participants. “We’ll soon send out invitations but we also encourage businesses to reserve a place by phoning the Indy office on 5249 6700,” Mr Galpin says. The Indy agreed earlier this year to sponsor its first Geelong Business Excellence Awards. The organisers have since announced a tripling of nominees on the back of the Indy’s extensive print and online coverage. “We have a lot in common: we’re both 31 years old this year, with a history of supporting local small businesses,” Mr Galpin said. The paper has an active news website at geelongindy.com.au, including a weekly E-paper with free email alert subscriptions. Readers can also follow the Indy on Facebook and Twitter.

When Highton fish and chip maestro Pasquale Di Maio heard he had been nominated for the Geelong Business Excellence Awards he was rapt. “We got the letter a few weeks ago and we were shocked,” he says. “It was nice to get that recognition for what we have done.” Pasquale reckons one of the store’s gluten-free customers might have nominated them “because we’ve put a lot of effort into that”. The financial advisor of 13 years says his wife Melissa - a celiac - was part of the motivation for opening the store. “I wanted to run my own business and my wife loves fish and chips.“ Pasquale bought and renovated the business a Pasquale Di Maio year ago, introducing a big at Highton Fish and new range of burgers and Chips. fresh fish. “In terms of fish and chips, I want to be the greatest,” he says. The first-time entrant looked forward to competing against Geelong’s best first-year businesses and the region’s hospitality sector. “There’s some hot competition and some great venues in Geelong. But we know we do fish and chips very well.” “We have some good young kids that work hard and take pride in the shop, so we would love for them to enjoy some recognition.“ Pasquale and Melissa have been flat out working to open another shop and finding time to complete their application for the awards. “The process has been great to focus on the little things we can do to making great fish and chips,” Pasquale says.
Great Ocean Stays owner Chris Smith describes the Geelong Business Excellence Awards as a great platform to promote accessibility.
It’s little wonder Great Ocean Stays won for accessibility at the Geelong Business Excellence Awards - it’s what they do. The company builds homes that are welcoming for people of all abilities in Ocean Grove. “Winning the award was the best business moment of my life,” owner Chris Smith said. “It gave me the courage to keep going, and it’s opened up a lot of doors for me.” But the award is more than promotion for Chris’ holiday homes - it’s her chance to promote accessibility to local businesses.
“I’m just one person in a small business,” she says. “Winning gives me the platform for people to pay attention.” The whole holiday market has shifted over the last seven years with people renting their homes online, Chris says. So she decided to carve herself a niche and has so far invested $3 million into homes that are “truly accessible”. “Now, I’ve become the go to person on the Bellarine for accessible tourism,” she says. “If you don’t have a disability, you know someone who does and it just made
really good sense to move into that space.” For Chris, accessibility is about more than her clients. She hires a number of people with disability who she described as loyal, competent and hardworking. “They multitask more, just getting out the door more than you and I do in one day. After starting the business, complications from a brain tumour left Chris with the left side of her face paralysed. “Coming out of it has given me even more empathy.”
New player Enso building on opportunity to compete at excellence awards Enso Homes founder Lee Selkrig feels privileged to be part of Geelong’s “construction boom”. “We’ve grown quite significantly in the last 18 months,” he says. “We’re brand new to all this, but it’s exciting at the same time.” It’s Enso Homes’ first time at the Geelong Business Excellence Awards, and he looks forward to taking on the region’s best. “It would be great to get some reward for our staff,” he says. “I think (commerce) is quite healthy down here at the moment.” “I’m not a long-time resident, but I can feel it changing. Geelong is not as industrial as it once was.” If there’s one thing that stands out in local business, Lee says, it’s loyalty. “Businesses are much more accountable down here - everyone’s more thank-
ful for the business you’ve been given.” The 30-year-old former carpenter moved from Coldstream to Armstrong Creek with his wife and two girls to set up the business. “I used to visit this region frequently in my late teens,” he says “Enso Homes has tailor-made their expansive Home Collection to suit the Surf Coast. If I was 80 and I (hadn’t had) a crack, I think I’d look back with regret.” Lee says the awards are a great opportunity for local businesses hoping to get noticed. “I just want to let people know that there is another choice out there for someone buying local.” Right: Geelong Business Excellence Awards newcomer Lee Selkrig, right.
Jess Gregson and Debbie and Tony Spence, centre, with the Geelong Business Excellence Awards family business trophy.
Jayco motivated for ‘the big one’ Prestige Jayco have their eyes on Geelong’s premier business award this year, says the company’s Jess Gregson. “That’s another reason we keep entering,” she says. “We want to better ourselves and we definitely want to get the big award.” The caravan dealer made Geelong Business Excellence Awards’ Hall of Fame after big wins over the past three years. But they’re yet to get their hands on the big one. “It motivates us to do even better,” Jess says. Prestige Jayco has won the retail business award twice and last year took out family business of the year. “It was a really proud moment to be recognised,” Jess says. “It’s excellent exposure for us. We take so much pride in being a family-run business, so to be acknowledged for that was amazing. It’s a really inspiring night to see local businesses supporting each other and celebrating.” After almost two years at Jayco, Jess feels right at home at the family-owned business. But for Prestige Jayco, the awards are all about showing “we’re more than selling caravans” Jess says. The dealer sells accessories, offers servicing and warranty, and makes custom annexes for caravans.

2017 GEELONG BUSINESS EXCELLENCE AWARDS Winning in retail
Paying it forward
Oishi-m shone in retail in the 2016 Geelong Business Excellence Awards, taking out the category in its competition debut. But for the owner of the children’s clothing business, Miyo Fallshaw, entering the awards was even more important than the exposure. “Winning an award was the icing on the cake,” she says. “We’d already learnt so much through the application process.” “It was amazing milestone to stop and recognise. But it’s more about the process of what you learn about yourself along the way.” Miyo got some external business consultants to take a look at Oishi-m recently as part of a State Government program. “We found the business awards application process was a more comprehensive review of our business than getting expert consultants to review it!” she says. Miyo says the award’s criteria are perfect for local businesses to look at their achievements and what opportunities there are to grow. “Taking the time to sit down and do the application process was incredibly rewarding.” Miyo joined Oishi-m eight years ago and has been the sole owner for just over a year.
A Geelong Business Excellence Awards winner has helped develop a new community organisation grant. Adroit Insurance Group, which won Business of the Year in 2016, has joined Geelong Community Foundation to launch the $100,000 capital grant. The grant will come from the proceeds of Adroit’s annual charity golf day at 13th Beach on 23 November. The Geelong Community Foundation Adroit Golf Day Grant will be open to organisations based in or providing services in the Geelong region. “The grant will provide physical infrastructure such as the acquisition, construction or renovation of a building, purchase of equipment, furniture and fitting, purchase of vehicles or computer hardware and software and its installation,” says Adroit’s Andrew Locke. Applications can include support for more than one project up to the value of $100,000. Applications close 7 July. The grant results from a “strong, pro-active partnership” between Geelong Community Foundation and Adroit Insurance Group, says the foundation’s Gail Rodgers. “The Adroit Insurance Group Golf Day Grant is another example of the strong leadership shown by Adroit in supporting our community.”
Miyo Fallshaw, left, says winning the retail category at the Geelong Business Excellence Awards was the “icing on the cake”.
Corio Waste Management’s Nathan, Ken, Mathew and Anthea Dickens are entering Geelong Business Excellence Awards for the first time.
Money in waste Corio Waste Management is entering Geelong Business Excellence Awards for the first time after nominations from the Deakin University Diversity Field Officer and local job creation programs. Chief executive officer Mathew Dickens is “looking forward to benchmarking ourselves against other businesses” in as many categories as possible. “I think it would be easier to tell you what we haven’t nominated for,” he says. “We’re interested in measuring our performance and this process helps us do that.” “And we thought we should enter because we believe that the achievements of our people deserve recognition and reward.” Mathew hopes the business will be recognised for its work with G21’s GROW jobs creation program. “We try to provide opportunities for people from targeted areas in G21 region,” he says. “We want to make a difference.”
Corio Waste Management is investing in ways to be more environmentally friendly, with technology to reduce diesel consumption. “We’ve also invested heavily in new technology to improve driver comfort, safety and well-being,” Matthew says. In an industry first the company charges customers using actual weight data, not volume, which Mathew says creates clearer and more transparent price signals and can help customers improve their recycling efforts. “We’ve invested a couple hundred thousand dollars in weighing systems for our trucks.” Corio Waste Management has collected, treated and disposed of waste for a vast range of local government and business clients for more than 20 years. The business employs more than 60 people, has a fleet of 50 vehicles and performs 10,000 waste and recycling collections each week.

FINALLY FRIDAY
Radiators set to rock pub scene By Luke Voogt Sydney pub rockers The Radiators will roll into Geelong for the first time in more than a decade this month. “We haven’t gone down that way in ages,” said the band’s original bass player Geoff Turner. “It’s good a working class crowd, there’s a lot of people who like to rock hard and play hard.” Turner said the band had a love-hate relationship with the song that launched them to fame (and notoriety) in 1980, Gimme Head. “People say ‘they’re the Gimme Head’ band.’ If we don’t play it we get in trouble and if we do play it we get in trouble - although not as much nowadays.” The song went “as viral as it could have back then” due its edgy lyrics, Turner said. “It goes over great live but was never meant to be a serious song. We’ve got heaps of other great songs that people love as well." Turner said his favourite was the band’s first big hit in 1979 - Coming Home. “People hang out for it,” he said. “It rocks so hard at the end of the night." The band started from “a few a guys from school who wanted to get some chicks”, Turner said. “We actually formed a group and realised none of us could play, so we went out and got some lessons.” At 62, Turner has slowed down, but not much. “We go as hard as we can,” he said. “We just might not pull up as well the next day.” “It was a lot more hectic back in the day. Back in the '80s you would go out and see a band. Nowadays you can just go on Youtube and watch a band play anywhere.” But lately the band has seen a resurgence in the live music scene and recently played a few sold out gigs, Turner said.
GIMME ROCK: The Radiators will play in Geelong for the first time in a decade.
“A lot of elder fans (are getting) out of the house more (because the) kids have grown up.” The original fans’ kids were also getting to
shows to see what “these Radiators are all about", he said. “You kind of feel you owe it to them to give
them a good show.” The Radiators play at Gateway Hotel on 20 May.

Check in for real sound of Eagles By Luke Voogt
BEHIND THE SCENES: Directors Georgia Chara and Benjamin Mitchell and founder of Theatre of the Winged Unicorn Elaine Mitchell.
Acting on play of ideas, and for fun By Luke Voogt Geelong’s newest “play within a play within a play”, Behind: Behind the Arras, will open at Ceres for Mother’s Day Sunday. The play is the first full-length script that Newtown director Ben Mitchell has written. “It was a bit mind-bending trying to write it,” he told the Indy Tuesday. “It’s something I haven’t seen before.” Ben started acting 15 years ago at 20 but moved into directing during the past five years. “It’s quite intense,” he said. “When you’re directing you’re suddenly worrying about every character.” For his first script Ben turned to the work of his father, Geelong playwright Dennis Mitchell. Dennis wrote Behind the Arras in 1988, which
itself takes a funny look at the making of a play. Behind: Behind the Arras is comedic insight into the trials and tribulations of a theatre company as they attempt to put together Dennis’s play. Director Rose confronts an ever-increasing list of issues as she battles to get her theatre troupe’s production ready for opening night. “They’ve all got their day jobs and their own lives and they come together each night for the rehearsals,” Ben said. The play features the local acting talents of Miriam Pohlenz, Melissa and Rose Musselwhite, Ellie Gardner, Jocelyn Mackay, Kris Smythe, Michael Leigh, Ben Crowley, Jonathon Gardner and Greg Chadwick. Behind: Behind the Arras runs at Ceres Temperance Hall until 28 May.

Glaswegian David Grey says people flock to his tribute act “to hear the Eagles the way they remember them”. “If you’re an Eagles fan, this is the only show you’ll have to see,” he told the Indy. “We treat the theatre as a time machine, and try to take the audience back to the '70s.” The tribute’s ‘Don Henley’ said he and his band mates took imitation to the next level. “It’s a bit different from every other Eagles show,” the 43-year-old Scottish expat said. “We play all the characters.” The band mimicked Henley, Joe Walsh and Glenn Frey with the enthusiasm of “diehard Eagle fans”, he said. “We spend a lot of time perfecting the harmony vocals. The chemistry (between us) is amazing - it’s as if it was meant to be. “They’re great guys to be around and it’s a ball touring with them.” Grey said some tribute bands mocked The Best of Eagles as a “clone show”. “But we take that as a compliment.” With many of The Eagles out of action or pursuing solo careers, Grey said his act was the closest thing to the original for the newest generation of fans. “There’s a lot of pressure on every Eagles show in the world because we’ve got to keep the flame going.” Grey was playing in an Eagles tribute in the when The Best of Eagles producer noticed him in action.
TAKE IT EASY: The Best of the Eagles will tour Geelong this month. “We used to tour around Europe,” he said. He joined the band for its Hotel California tour in 2016, performing for more than 10,000 fans across Australia. “So we just decided to give it a try and we got some good reviews, so we just went with it,” he said. “This country is fantastic; you can survive in the music industry full time. There’s a lot of places you can’t do that.” Grey has played in Geelong with the tribute act before, but said next weekend would be his first time at GPAC. “It was really buzzing last time in Geelong,” he said. “The response was phenomenal.” Readers may recognise the versatile singer from his other tribute The UK Bee Gees, which toured Geelong in February. The Best of the Eagles play at Geelong Performing Arts Centre’s drama theatre on 20 May.

After 40 years in the business mechanic Gary Keleman is passing his knowledge and expertise to fellow Mazda enthusiast Shane Lockyer. Shane purchased Keleman Motors a month ago and is keen to live up to Gary’s excellent reputation. “I want to keep up his high standard of customer service and attention to detail,” he says. Shane has almost 20 years’ experience working on a vast range of makes including Mazda, Subaru, Toyota, Volkswagen and Audi. He did his apprenticeship in Echuca before moving to Ocean Grove in 2006. “I love the hands-on side of it and fixing things, basically,” he says. “I get a great amount of satisfaction out of fixing something and bringing it back to life.” Shane, who lives in Ocean Grove with his wife and seven-month-old boy, says he was very lucky to get the chance to buy a workshop with such a superb reputation. “I just wanted the challenge of running my own business. I thought I might as well have a go while I’m still young.” Gary’s been keeping a keen eye on Shane for a month to make sure he’s up to standard. “Gary has been very good to me,” Shane says. “He gives me a helping hand, especially with the running of the business.” And the former owner couldn’t be more impressed so far. “If you’re passionate about what you do, you’re going to be good at it,” Gary says. “And Shane is very passionate about his job.”

Customers rely on the fine-tuned expertise of German Automotive to ensure they are prepared for any lengthy trip. General manager Ben Buckle said German Automotive always tries to improve its service to customers. The German Automotive team has the latest equipment and specialises in European brands, specifically Volkswagen, Mercedes Benz, Audi, Skoda and Porsche. “We’re set up to dealer standard for these brands and take great pride in meeting the needs of our customers who have come to rely on us over the years,” Ben said. “We’ve invested heavily in both training and state-of-the-art equipment and two of our staff recently returned from training overseas. “This allows us to work on current models with no effect on manufacturer’s warranty at all.” The team at German Automotive uses genuine parts sourced from European suppliers and seeks customer authorisation before proceeding with any major repairs. Road worthy inspections are available and customers can benefit from the use of courtesy vehicles and a drop off/pick up service around Geelong. The workshop is equipped with dealer-standard diagnostic equipment to quickly track down any vehicle problems. German Automotive is at 8 Autumn Street, Geelong West.

SPORT Cats need to regain form The Cats will need to turn their form around against Essendon Saturday night to avoid becoming one of the AFL’s 'mediocre’ sides. “We played poorly again,” said Geelong coach Chris Scott following last Saturday night’s loss to Gold Coast. “What we’re doing at the moment is leading to us being a very mediocre side.” No side was safe, even if they were only slightly out of form, Scott said. “I think there’s a general misunderstanding in the footy world as to how even the competition is,” But that was no excuse for the Cats recent “flat spot” which has seen them loose the past two games, Scott said. “There are clear things that we need to improve,” he said. The Cats continued to kick straight, leading the AFL in goal accuracy. But supply has been lacking for Geelong’s forwards with the side sitting on 11th for inside 50s. “We were dominated in the inside 50s,” Scott said. Scott will likely be disappointed if Essendon, who are second-last for inside 50s, get more entries than Geelong.
MID STRENGTH: Geelong will need its midfielders, like Cam Guthrie, to increase the supply of footy to key forwards. (Facebook) Cats forward Daniel Menzel will be one player hoping for better supply against Essendon. He shared the coach’s assessment of the Cats’ performance against the Suns. “They possessed the footy a lot better than we probably did and they were able to cut us up a bit too with their short passes,” he said. While the Cats sit third on the ladder at 5-2,
they arguably haven’t had a convincing win since between Fremantle in round 1. “We’re not at our best and we probably weren’t when we were winning either,” Menzel said. Geelong will hope to spoil celebrations for former Cat James Kelly, who will ironically play his 300th game against his old club. “I’d be lying if I said I didn’t look at the fixture at the start of the year," Kelly said Tuesday. “There’s still a few guys who I talk to regularly there and it will be nice to be out there with them." Meanwhile, the Cats will have until at least 2019 to get a women’s team in the WAFL. “Our club is obviously disappointed that there will not be a Geelong Cats team competing in the 2018 AFLW season," Cats chief executive Brian Cook said Tuesday. “We believe we made a good case for expansion, and we will continue the work we are doing to grow the game and the investment in our VFL women’s team.” More than 2000 people came to the first VFL women’s game of the season at Simonds Stadium, Mr Cook said. “We look forward to the day that the AFLW is a league with a Geelong team.”
TAKE IT, EZE: Kene Eze charging for the Warriors. (Ivan Dugandzic)
Warriors must ramp up wins to escape danger zone By Josip Zilic North Geelong Warriors require a string of wins to lift off the relegation spots and mount a survival challenge. Their cause wasn’t helped with another draw last Friday night against the Knights, however it was a point that will be much needed none the less. The Warriors go into battle at home on Saturday against Hume City, which has just come off a three-week spell it hasn’t experienced too often with two losses and a draw. Being such a professional set up, Hume will no doubt be stinging from the recent spell and be looking to inflict some pain on the battle-hardened Warriors. Hume’s acquisitions this year would have you thinking they would have a lot more goals to their
tally with Liam Boland joining the attack with Nick Hegarty and Theo Markelis - but the combination hasn’t quite come together. The Warriors come into the match after a couple of draws that weren’t for the purists to watch. Regardless they have managed to stem the flow of losses with a point each from their matches against the Saints and the Knights and will need to be at their battle-hardened best on Saturday against Hume - and in front of their home crowd - if they want to notch up their first win of the season. Against the Knights the Warriors went down early again, as they have in the last five weeks prior to that, this time on eight minutes when Jason Hicks pounced on an initial block from Matt Townley to drill high into the net giving Marko Stevanja no chance to save. To their credit they managed to level the
scores just five minutes later when Ivan Grgic was awarded a goal, after the ball was scrambled around the goal mouth from a Josh Pugh corner and eventually forced over the line. The Knights seemed to be resolute to sit a little deeper allowing the Warriors to come at them, and on several transitional plays the outlet was Kene Eze - with several charges at goal including a shot that sailed over the bar - the scoring boots were not on. After the break the Knights were amassing the possession count and able to find pockets behind the Warriors defence, however Stevanja was on song to thwart chances to Robbie Zadworny and Kym Harris to keep the scoreboard steady. Kick off on Saturday at Elcho Park is at 12.30pm for the table topping under-20s and 3pm for the seniors.
Trevally taken on turn of tide ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Queenscliff Harbour provided some piscatorial action over the past week on some thumping silver trevally. Fish just over 40cm were caught on soft plastics cast into the main cut at high tide. Craig Varker put in few hours on Monday negotiating the harbour pylons after hooking up trevally to 40cm on Pumpkinseed-coloured plastics. Trelly’s Fishing World Geelong’s Adam Van Der Lugt also fished the harbour but found well-conditioned pinkie snapper on soft plastics. Grass beds outside the harbour hosted whiting, including some impressivesized fish over 40cm. Anglers fishing land-based from St Leonards Pier caught squid on artificial size-3 jigs in the evenings. Fishing around the lights worked well. Nearby, the well-known piece of water labelled Bourke Street again produced bag-limit captures of whiting for boaties. Times with the most tidal flow fished best. Clifton Springs again produced good numbers of squid, although sometimes on the smaller side. Meanwhile, anglers fishing the deeper edge of Curlewis Bank boated numbers of whiting on pippies and running sinker rigs. The Barwon River estuary was a hot spot for whiting, salmon, trevally, bream and mulloway. The lower reaches were idea for whiting, although the size was down, while the Sheepwash Road section had plenty of small salmon along with mulloway to 90cm on slack tide after dark. Dane Jurkovic and Daimin Mole were onto good numbers of garfish from St Helens rocks when Dane’s rod buckled over and line began peeling from the reel. Closest to the rod, Daimin began fighting the fish, assumed to be a nice snapper but which turned out to be a well-conditioned elephant fish that was released to fight another day. Surf anglers fishing the beaches in the evenings caught gummy shark, snapper and even mulloway on simple paternoster rigs with fresh squid baits. Daylight hours produced salmon averaging 1.5kg on lures cast during run-in tides. Portland continued producing school bluefin tuna, with Chris from Gone Fishing Charters finding good numbers of fish. Freshwater fishos got stuck into new hot spot Stoney Creek, taking some fantastic fish. Michael Grozdanovski caught on lure a ripping redfin of 46cm and 1.7kg on Monday morning, while other anglers landed numerous brown trout just over 1kg along with a few rainbows. Lake Bullen Merri continued fishing well for rainbow trout and Chinook salmon. Fishing Powerbait from the lake margins worked well, as did trolling lures or fishing pilchard fillets in berley trails. Lake Purrumbete’s brown trout were on the chew for anglers slowly trolling the east bank at first and last light. Next week should provide good fishing for whiting out from St Leonards, while Queenscliff Harbour’s silver trevally could be an option on soft plastics.
