Out of bounds By Jeremy Sollars
Delivering on message of hope By Jeremy Sollars ‘Hope where it’s needed most’ - that's the motto of the Salvation Army, and this weekend you can help bring that hope to those in need. The Salvo’s 2017 Red Shield doorknock is on again and Warwick and Stanthorpe Corps officers Lieutenants Zak and Dee-Ann Churchill are putting out the call to dig deep, and to volunteer some of your time to pound the pavement. The Churchills have been based in Warwick since the start of the year and spend a large chunk of their time providing assistance to people in crisis in our communities. Having moved from their previous posting in Sydney, Zak says the couple has become acutely aware of the yawning gap in funding for community outreach services between urban and regional Australia. Contentious land re-zonings proposed by the Southern Downs Regional Council including a plan to allow intensive animal and noxious industries within Warwick’s Morgan Park buffer zone were yesterday knocked on the head at the council’s May meeting in Stanthorpe. Councillors voted against proceeding with the Morgan Park buffer re-zoning and a proposal to change the zoning of the GrainX site at Allora from residential to industrial. Widespread concerns were revealed over the re-zoning proposals, released in February and attracting a raft of public submissions overwhelmingly in opposition. Seven privately-owned properties that would have been affected are located to the south of Morgan Park with frontages to the Warwick-Killarney Road, Old Stanthorpe Road and Morgan Park Road, with their owners objecting to that rezoning. The closest parcels are less than two kilometres from the Morgan Park facility and all are well inside the designated Morgan Park “buffer zone”, which extends as far to the south as Wildash School Road. In a statement released at the time of the re-zoning announcement the council noted that “intensive animal industries include activities such as feedlots, piggeries and poultry farms” and “special industries are industrial activities that have the potential to create significant impacts, examples (including) rendering plants and manufacturing of fertilisers”. A vision worth pursuing Arts Scene with Sue Keong The Roy Fox Science Laboratory The project involves refurbishing the existing science lab, creating a new lab, and creating a new secondary art room. As well, the whole science and art building will be refreshed. The new facility will be named after Roy Fox, a legend in science and maths at The School of Total Education. Known for his commitment to his subject and his pupils, many beyond the school would have known Roy through his after-hours tutoring of Warwick students in physics and maths. Roy’s dedicated service was beautifully captured in a student’s thank you note which read “Dear Mr Fox, Thank you so much for your hard work and devotion to the school. The time you put into planning classes, exams and revision sheets is amazing, and I am so grateful for that. Your patience and perseverance has made maths much easier for me this year.” Sadly, Roy Fox passed away in 2015 and in the outpouring that followed it was suggested by a former student that
something be created in the school to honour Roy’s legacy. When it was discovered that Roy had drawn several plans for a new science laboratory, it was proposed that such a facility be created and named after him. A substantial grant has been provided by the Queensland Government to carry out the project. A further $100,000 needs to be raised to complete it. The car boot sale and market with bargains galore, on this Saturday 27 May in the SOTE carpark, is one of a number of events organised by the fund-raising committee comprised of current and past parents. Tax deductible donations are also an avenue to contribute. Contact the school office for bookings and inquiries on 4661 2666. Chris Hulme’s art exhibition of glass, mosaics and paintings are for sale and will be open to the public. A Million Stars workshop will continue throughout the day. of art on a community’s sense of place. “Studies have found that social offerings, openness and welcome-ness and, importantly, the aesthetics of a place - its art, parks, and green spaces - ranked higher than education, safety, and the local economy as a “driver of attachment.” Now showing Stanthorpe Art Gallery - ‘Labyrinth’ exhibition by Roslyn Greevy and Joyce Gray with their bold and beautiful art, ‘Dali’s Dream’ by Jodi Bowen connecting Dali’s work to the Granite Bel and the Botanical Artists of Queensland with ‘Table to Downs Chapter’. Salvo’s are delivering on a message of hope particularly in a rural or outlying area, what do you do? “We come across a lot of people who need to attend specialist and surgical appointments at the bigger hospitals, and even people who need to attend a funeral out of town and have no fuel money.” Zak and Dee-Ann’s community assistance is focused on those in shortterm crisis - such as financial strain from unexpected medical expenses - as opposed to long-term welfare support. Our local Salvos had a part-time case worker who resigned a couple of months ago and they currently don’t have the budget to replace her. Food vouchers and help with basic living expenses are also common requests for the Churchills, with Zak saying homelessness in Warwick and Stanthorpe is a big issue, but one

But they’re not alone in the community sector with many local providers struggling against the tide of need with a lack of funding from all levels of government for regional support services. “There is definitely an imbalance there when you look at what regional areas get in terms of funding compared to the major cities,” Zak said. “We are seeing the same kinds of needs here as we did in Sydney, but there’s just not the same level of service provision. “The beauty of Red Shield is that it allows up to open a lot of new doors to refer people to.” People in need of help from the Salvation Army should initially contact

Fresh face of the Cowboys By Jeremy Sollars Tiffany Cruice took a little bit of persuading but she’s pleased to have taken on the role of the Warwick Cowboys TRL Ambassador for the 2017 season. The club is playing in its 32nd year in the Toowoomba Rugby League and is stronger than ever, with home games attracting major crowds to its Father Ranger Oval headquarters. The season so far has been a bit of a mixed bag for the Cowboys A Grade side - which has lost some of its more experienced players in 2017 - but the boys are jubilant after two hard-fought wins over the last two weekends against Gatton at home and Brothers in Toowoomba. The Cowboys under-18s have had a cracker season so far, currently sitting at third spot on the ladder. Tiffany’s husband Josh Cruice currently plays at second row for the Cowboys A Grade and she credits him for stepping into the ambassador role. “I’d been thinking about it but I wasn’t really sure - Josh encouraged me and said I should do it,” Tiffany said. “It’s primarily a fund-raising role and I’m looking forward to helping organise events, like Ladies’ Day which we have coming up on Saturday 10 June, when the Cowboys play Wattles at home. “I’m getting a lot of help and advice from some of the other ladies connected with the club, such as Jessie Banks who was the 2015 ambassador. “Some of the others who are helping me are Donna Watson, Santina Howard, Carly McMonagle, Jess Lawrence, Shelby Kinlyside and Katie Johnson, who’ve all been great.” The Ladies’ Day organisers
Tiffany with husband Josh, currently playing at second row for the Cowboys. are planning to meet tonight and Saturday 10 June promises to be a great afternoon and evening of socialising - with nibbles, champagne and live entertainment in the mix - and cheering on the home side. Tiffany said a ‘cocktail’ dress theme may be the go but the finer details are still being finalised - keep an eye on the Warwick Cowboys Facebook page for updates. By day Tiffany is a sales consultant with Southern Downs Realty and juggles that with being a mother to her young daughters, Indigo, 7, and Harper, 4. Tiffany reports that Josh a carpenter by trade - will be good to run on this coming weekend in the round nine away game against Goondiwindi, after sustaining concussion in the clash with Gatton on Sunday 14 May which caused him to miss last weekend’s meeting with Brothers, where the Cowboys
celebrated a 46-24 win. Anyone who watched the Gatton A Grade game would agree with Tiffany’s assessment of it as “very intense” - the Cowboys won out 20-16 - and Brothers last weekend was “still a hard game”, as the Cowboys fight tooth and nail to climb up the Hutchies ladder, where they currently sit at sixth spot with eight points. Those keen to support the Cowboys can buy tickets in their current multi-draw raffle - to be drawn on Ladies’ Day - with the prizes being a kayak and fishing pack, a fire-pit and an Esky filled with amber and other refreshments - with tickets available from Tiffany on 0447 301 913. Out of bounds Abuse case exposes risks of ‘relative’ danger By Jeremy Sollars A grandfather accused of sexually abusing his granddaughter under the age of 12 was found guilty in the District Court sittings in Warwick on Tuesday 22 May. The man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the girl, pleaded not guilty at the start of his trial last week to 12 charges of various forms of sexual assault, including four of rape and four of unlawful and indecent treatment of a child under his care. The jury of five men and seven
women failed to reach a verdict on the rape charges but found the man guilty on the other counts after deliberating for nearly three days. The offences were alleged to have taken place at residences in both Warwick and Laidley in 2015 and 2016, with the girl aged just eight years when the offending began. The man is due to be sentenced today in the Ipswich District Court. The District Court in Warwick last week heard the grandfather opportunistically preyed on his granddaughter when she was under his

From front page If the amendment had been adopted, any applications for those types of industries on the parcels concerned would have been assessed by the council’s planning officers and would not have required public advertising or a vote of the councillors. John Torr, former chairman of the Morgan Park User’s Group - which represents the various equestrian and motorsport clubs based at Morgan Park - told the Free Times in February the clubs had been advised to lodge written objections with the council over the planned re-zoning. One other controversial re-zoning involving Stanthorpe’s Carnell Raceway was also overruled, which would have allowed any future development at the Raceway to be ‘self-assessable’ and therefore not subject to council scrutiny.

Tearing the dunnies down Casey’s tips
By Jeremy Sollars The public toilets behind the Warwick Town Hall will be demolished after a tense debate at the Southern Downs Regonal Council meeting in Stanthorpe yesterday. As reported in last week’s Free Times the council released a statement in late April saying the toilet block had been the subject of recent vandalism, as well as complaints about its aesthetics, condition and maintenance and concerns over safety. The statement also said the toilet block doesn’t meet “best practice standards in accordance with Crime Prevention through Environmental Design strategies” and can’t be locked at night, making it “a prime target for crime and vandalism”. “This facility is not heritage listed, and in fact the Warwick Town Hall Conservation Management Plan states that the brick toilets have no cultural heritage significance and can be removed, replaced or renovated as required,” the statement said. Mayor Tracy Dobie was forced to use her casting vote at yesterday’s meeting to resolve a deadlock over the dunnies. With deputy mayor Jo McNally absent, councillors Sheryl Windle, Marika McNichol, Neil Meiklejohn and Vic Pennisi all voted against demolishing the toilets. In the pro-demolition camp were councillors Rod Kelly, Yve Stocks, Cameron Gow and mayor Dobie herself, making it four-all. Cr Dobie then used her casting vote in favour of the toilets’ departure, describing them as an “eyesore” and unsafe. The council has previously said giving the toilet block the heave-ho would create three more spaces in the

building is part of the Town Hall and does have heritage significance. While the council is unsure when the toilets were built it has suggested the materials and construction point to the 1960s.
Mr Kemp said he understood they could date back to the 1930s ‘Art Deco’ period and had the potential to be a quirky tourist attraction. “If they were put back to their original state - with proper chain flushing
and so on - it would be something that tourists would make a point of using,” he said last week. “The toilets are part of Warwick’s history and we’ve already lost too much of that over the years.”

Jury considers murder case Summing up of the prosecution and defence cases took place this week in the murder trial of Warwick man Vincent O’Dempsey. O’Dempsey, 79, pleaded not guilty on the first day of the trial on Tuesday 2 May to all charges relating to the disappearance of Brisbane mum Barbara McCulkin and her daughters Vicki and Leanne 43 years ago. O’Dempsey is facing three charges of murder and one of deprivation of liberty in the trial, after the jury in the case was empanelled. Barbara McCulkin was aged 34 when she disappeared, Vicki was 13 and Leanne 11. The McCulkins were last seen alive on January 16, 1974 at their Highgate Hill home in inner Brisbane. It has been alleged the McCulkins were killed because of what the mother knew about a Brisbane nightclub firebombing. Crown Prosecutor David Meredith this week urged the jury in the trial to give weight to evidence from three witnesses who told the court O’Dempsey confessed the murders to them. They include O’Dempsey’s former associate Warren McDonald, O’Dempsey’s former fiancee Kerri Scully and a third individual O’Dempsey met while in prison. The jury began its deliberations yesterday, Wednesday 23 May. Updates online at www.freetimes.com.au

Tenterfield Shire Council mayor Peter Petty has moved to quash a rumour that the council’s chief executive, Damien Connor, had left his role. Cr Petty told the Free Times late last week that Mr Connor was currently on annual leave and was entitled to four weeks off every year. The rumour followed a confidential Extraordinary General Meeting of Tenterfield Shire Council on Thursday 11 May. The agenda contained a sole notice of motion entitled ‘Management matters relating to senior staff appointments’, with the meeting closed to the public and media as it
involved “personnel matters concerning particular individuals”. Cr Petty said the meeting dealt with a “structural change” with the council’s staffing but would not elaborate, other than to say that one “new appointment” had commenced and a second would commence shortly. The minutes of the meeting are still not available online. Two senior management vacancies - Asset and Project Planning and Governance and Information - have been advertised in local media. Mr Connor was this month appointed to the board of directors of NSW Local Government Professionals.
Tyre-popping trouble Tyre companies in Goondiwindi and Millmerran did a brisk trade earlier this week after a load of roofing screws was dropped from a vehicle on the Gore Highway between Millmerran and Goondiwindi. It is understood the screws - numbering in their thousands - were dropped onto the highway around 20 kilometres out of Goondiwindi - near the Leichhardt Highway turnoff - sometime through the night on Sunday 21 May, or in the early hours of Monday. Trucks and other vehicles sustained multiple punctures throughout Sunday night and Monday. A Transport and Main Roads (TMR) spokeswoman said both lanes of the highway were partially blocked due to the spillage of screws in two locations, five kilometres apart. “Clean-up was carried out by both the Goondiwindi Regional Council and Toowoomba Regional Council due to the spread of the screws crossing council boundaries,” the spokeswoman said. “Further inspections were carried out on Monday morning and a number of parcels have been recovered and handed over to police to assist in identifying the company responsible for the spill.” The name of the company involved has not been released.

Turbine power on the horizon estimated $500m project at Coopers Gap between Kingaroy and Dalby proposed by AGL. Other wind farms are proposed for Mareeba in the State’s north, with small wind farms currently operating at Ravenshoe and Thursday Island.
By Jeremy Sollars The developer of a proposed wind farm north of Stanthorpe says he expects to see turbines turning by the middle of 2018. Tim Lucas is the man behind the planned $40m ‘Rabbit Ridge Wind Farm’ for land off Rabbit Ridge Road at Dalveen which would see six giant turbines up to 200 metres in height gracing the local rural vista. Around 40 local residents from the Dalveen and Pozieres areas objected to the plan when it was lodged by Mr Lucas with the Southern Downs Regional Council in 2014. Mr Lucas got the all-clear on the project from the Southern Downs Regional Council in late November 2016 after nearly three years of haggling over council conditions and objections from locals. The previous council originally refused the plan but Mr Lucas appealed and last year accepted renegotiated conditions set out by the current council to allow his plan to proceed. Mr Lucas did agree to down-size the wind farm from eight to six turbines. The project would require a three kilometre section of new 33kV powerline from the wind farm to the main Ergon

Locals are concerned about the visual appearance of the turbines on the landscape and noise both from the turbines themselves and backup diesel generators which would be operated in times of minimal wind. Mr Lucas told the Free Times this week he has had “major grid connection studies and modelling checked by Ergon”. “I am in the final stages of negotiating with a turbine manufacturer and expect to see turbines turning mid next year,” Mr Lucas said. “This privately funded infrastructure project will be a major boost to the local economy both during construction and the subsequent eco-tourism boost. “Stanthorpe’s green cre-
dentials of being powered 100 per cent by renewables will entice visitors to experience the sight of the majestic turbines slowly turning as well as then exploring and discovering the many other attractions the area has to offer.” It is understood the turbines will be manufactured in Germany. Mr Lucas has previously declined to disclose funding sources for the project but in March of this year said he was “working towards financial close”. Mr Lucas resides in Brisbane’s south but operates a plumbing supplies business based in Sydney. In March the Queensland Government issued environmental approvals for what would be the State’s biggest wind farm at completion, an
Solar farm update The developer behind a planned solar farm for Warwick on the Cunningham Highway north of town near the Caltex Roadhouse has been in Saudi Arabia in recent weeks working on similar projects in the desert kingdom. Ahmed El Safty of Zero Energy Developments has approval for a $97 million solar farm across 80-acres on a block of land owned by William Dwan. Mr El Safty has previously told the Free Times he expects to generate 20 “high value professional jobs” in the Warwick region and a further 50 positions comprising of trades personnel, plant operators and skilled labourers directly “and about the same indirectly”. He told the Free Times this week his firm is “in the process of capital raising and we have progressed well with one party, which hopefully we will sign a mandate within the next two weeks”.
In brief No move on yards The Southern Downs Regional Council’s Saleyards Advisory Committee has not met since March and is not due to meet again until late June, a council spokeswoman confirmed this week. The committee first met in December last year where a potential plan to build a new $15m saleyards in Warwick and to demolish the existing saleyards was discussed. The Saleyards Advisory Committee - which replaced the former Saleyards Management Committee - is made up of deputy mayor Jo McNally, Cr Rod Kelly, Les Fraser of Frasers Livestock Transport, management committee chair Graham Kirkland, Andrew Williams of Elders and David McIvor of McDougall and Sons. The council spokeswoman said the last meeting of the Saleyards Advisory Committee occurred on 17 March. “The next meeting of the Saleyards Advisory Committee is due to take place in late June, 2017,” the spokeswoman said.
In troubled waters Investigations by the Queensland Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (EHP) into effluent releases in Stanthorpe’s Quart Pot Creek are continuing, a departmental spokesman confirmed this week. The council was fined $12,190 by EHP after an effluent spill into Quart Pot Creek in July last year, and the creek was most recently contaminated during heavy rainfall associated with Cyclone Debbie. In early February a contractor working for the Stanthorpe River Trust accidentally severed
a sewer line in the creek with an excavator. The council stepped in on that occasion and repaired the sewer line. “The Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (EHP) issued a Penalty Infringement Notice for the original offence (last July) and is continuing to investigate other enforcement options to address the ongoing issue,” the EHP spokesman told the Free Times. “The Southern Downs Regional Council has been co-operative with the department in seeking to resolve the issues and achieve compliance. “As part of the investigation EHP has reviewed monitoring data provided by Southern Downs Regional Council. “EHP has previously inspected the Stanthorpe Waste Water Treatment Plant and nearby receiving waters and will again inspect the plant in the near future.” Members of the public are encouraged to report suspected pollution incidents, to the EHP Pollution Hotline on 1300 130 372.
Fowl plans Plans are on display at the council’s Warwick office for a propsed free range poultry farm on a property at 461 Jack Smith Gully Road at Freestone. The proposed farm would house up to 3000 birds over a series of stages and would use mobile poultry housing. Plans are also on display for an explosives disposal facility at 308 Waraghai Road at Karara. The plan would involve a 150 square metre disposal blasting site.

Grant helps history
In brief
y’s tips
The Killarney and District Historical Society would like to thank the Queensland Community Benefit Fund for providing grant funding for the re-wiring and re-painting of the interior of the Heritage Centre in Killarney, with work having already started. The building was originally the Commercial Bank of Sydney built in 1906. It closed as a bank in 1943. An upper level bank manager’s residence was destroyed in the Killarney Tornado of 1968. The building currently houses the historic collection for the district covering the area from the Great Dividing Range to Warwick and from the New South Wales border up to Maryvale.

Anyone visiting the Stanthorpe Hospital Emergency Department may notice a slight change to its location but Acting Director of Nursing Alison Evans said it would be business as usual for the ED. “We have relocated the ED temporarily, but only across the corridor from its usual location, so works on the hospital’s airconditioning and fire compartment project can continue,” Ms Evans said. “I’d like to assure the community that there will be no disruption to service and no change to the way the ED functions. “There is no change to access for walk-in patients or those brought in by ambulance and all local emergency services including Queensland Police Service, Queensland Ambulance Service and Queensland Fire and Emergency Service have been notified of the temporary change of location.” Ms Evans said signage was in place to notify visitors of the temporary relocation when they enter the hospital.
At around 2pm last Thursday 18 May Stanthorpe Police detained a 20-year-old backpacker who was in a vehicle on High Street. A quantity of cannabis as well as a grinder were located in the vehicle. The male offender was offered and accepted drug diversion. Detectives and uniformed police from Stanthorpe executed a search warrant at an address in Stanton Street around noon last Friday 19 May. A 22-year-old male person was present during the search and police located cannabis, smoking pipes and scales. Police were expecting charges to be laid this week in relation to this matter. The Stanthorpe Police Station also welcomed the arrival of its new Officer in Charge, Senior Sergeant Ged Brady. Snr Sgt Brady was previously the Officer in Charge of Chinchilla Police Station.

The ice problem (Southern Free Times, 18 May) calls for better services for the drug using community. Why on earth do people not understand personal responsibility? Why must any government be their guardian from health-destroying stupidity? Way back in 1966 this writer watched a change take place in the primary school curriculum in Queensland Schools. Funny little wooden blocks replaced tables and maths, and the English lessons were turned inside out. Some time later the cane was removed from teachers to redirect behaviours. Now we reap the whirlwind of those changes, from what had educated generations of the incredible Australians
that built the nation, to destruction of life! Day by day school standards are evident on the pages of newspapers, on TV and in the fearful cruelty dealt to those who cannot defend themselves! Ice is to blame is the catch-cry. What a cop-out that is, for what of the mind that in the seventh stanza of the poem “IF” by Rudyard Kipling, in part, “Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, and stoop and build ‘em up with worn out tools” and ending with “and which is more you’ll be a man my son”. Old fashioned common sense is all these users lack! Melba Morris, Allora.

Southern Downs Regional Council this week announced that to ensure the ongoing safety and reliability of Powerlink Queensland’s high voltage electricity network, low-flying helicopters will carry out routine maintenance inspections of transmission lines across Southern and Western Queensland until late June, weather permitting. A council spokeswoman said specialist crews would carry out this work across the Southern Downs region. “These patrols are an essential part of Powerlink’s maintenance activities and aim to carry out the work with minimum disruption to local communities,” she said.

Orchard Grove, Warwick Residential Land Release It’s little wonder people are making the lifestyle change and moving to Warwick. The region celebrates four seasons, quite unique for Queensland. With fresh air, magnificent national parks and a strong agriculture market, it’s a healthy place to live. Only three week’s ago, Orchard Grove Estate Stage 7A was released and has been priced to sell at $120,000 with 40% already sold including one Lot sold at Auction by local Auctioneer Darryl Evans. “We would love to see more local interest with owner occupiers being local residents who own their home and live in the area maintaining it’s Heritage” says Director of AUS SALES (QLD) Mladen Michael Kljaic who values the nurturing spirit of The Southern Downs community. Local residents have an opportunity to invest in their own dual key home, commonly known as a Duplex. A dual key home allows the occupants to live in each area or rent each area separately. Dual key homes create an opportunity for families to build wealth faster investing in future generations for the greater Warwick community. •House&LandPackage$350,000Houseon800sqmland 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom double garage with ducted air-cond •House&LandPackage$570,000Duplexon800sqmland 3bedroom,2bathroom,singlegaragewithsplitsystemtolounge&mainbedroom

CLASSIC DIMENSIONS
Celebrats 32 Years! Classic take on clothing Robyn Fraser’s business Classic Dimensions is celebrating 32 years of clothing Warwick’s ladies, and Robyn is thanking all of her customers for their strong support over the years. Robyn said when she purchased the business - then known as California Fashions - back in 1985 it was “a huge punt” as the business was not in good form and it was an industry she had no knowledge of. “But I felt the need for a personal challenge and it was then or never,” Robyn recalls. “My previous work experience had been clerical - having worked at a stock and station agent on leaving school at 15 and then to move into office work within my husband Les’ family business Frasers Transport. “A big challenge was ahead with three small children in tow. “I changed the name to Classic Dimensions, took in a partner and we were in business. “Hard work, many long hours, the fear of failure and my desire to succeed drove me on. “I kept being told that if you can last the first five years in business, you will survive. “In 1990 after my partner had a car accident and was not being able to continue, I was faced with the dilemma - to purchase that half or close the doors. “Now, 32 years on, I am still meeting the challenges but in that time I have met many great customers, both local and distant and still enjoy the satisfaction of a happy customer - and some have become personal friends!”
Robyn says retail is an extremely challenging field - much more so nowadays than maybe five years ago. “But I feel it is still about personal customer service and having the ability to see a happy customer leave the store and return as a repeat customer,” she says. “Creating a relationship in a relaxed atmosphere with customers is something we at Classic Dimensions strive for. “I need to thank my staff for their ongoing support. “I am a Warwick-ite through and through - I have lived here all my life and I see Warwick as a great country town servicing a huge surrounding area. “I am passionate about support for other private businesses in town and just hope that the general public see it that way as this is the only way our town is going to keep thriving. “We have some great shopping opportunities here without venturing elsewhere - or should I say at least browse in town first before taking the trip down the road. “Thank you Warwick for 32 years of loyal retail therapy!” The Classic Dimensions recipe for success ... All stock is constantly evolving to match the season and the latest trends as well as the good “old basics”; Robyn has watched fashion go a “full circle” over the last 32 years - the biggest change in that time is co-ordinate clothing and adding accessories to basic staples and Robyn likes to stock clothes that fit the way we live on the Southern Downs.

Art simply drawn to please Casey’s tips
Jean Fysh and Susan Shaw’s exhibition ‘Where the Light Fell’ has been surprising and charming visitors since it opened on 27 April at the Warwick Art Gallery. The mother and daughter duo have only been doing their art for five years after attending a pastel workshop by Warwick artist Nicole Wood in 2011. Their fascination with working with pastels was inspired by the instant colour and the challenge of the medium. Susan Shaw says the joy of creating the images for the exhibition will stay with her and her mother for a long time. “Our work generally revolves around the subtle beauty of scenes from our everyday lives,” she says. “We simply draw images that please us. “While time and consideration is given to the composition of drawings, and we will often spend hours raiding our china cupboards, garden sheds and fruit bowls to compose a pleasing subject, or take photographs of landscapes we have lived in, or travelled through, our drawings are not meant to inspire deep emotions. “We are simply attracted to the colour, texture and the relationship objects have between each other.”
Mother and daughter artistic duo Jean Fysh and Susan Shaw. Warwick Art Gallery director Karina Devine invited the artists to exhibit at Warwick Art Gallery after they entered in the Southern Downs Regional Artists exhibition in 2015. “Both artists have a lovely way of composing the subjects of their pastel drawings,” Ms Devine said. “Their subject matter is generally quite simple and understated yet they capture a piece of fruit or the patchwork of shop roofs in a way that makes that simple object shine. “Susan and Jean have a style
of working with pastel that makes it seem almost like velvet. I am so pleased that they accepted our invitation to have this exhibition though I know it has been quite daunting for them.” ‘Where the Light Fell’ will be on display until 3 June. This is the first exhibition where Warwick Art Gallery will operate under its new weekend hours. The gallery has extended its Saturday hours until 4pm and will no longer open on Sundays. Warwick Art Gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 4pm.

The UK Bee Gees is the most realistic tribute to the Bee Gees and the show is coming to the Warwick RSL Memorial Club this Saturday night. As the trio appear on the stage the audience can just feel the air of amazement from the audience. The UK Bee Gees have gone to great lengths to be certain that not only is the music very accurate, but that they look and act every inch as the Gibb brothers. All the great songs, the harmony voices, the look - modern or ’70s / ’80’s style - the mannerisms and the dry humour - all are faithfully re-created. From the first opening song of You Should Be Dancing all the way through the romantic ballads such as How Deep Is Your Love and finally into the fantastic disco film tracks such as Night Fever and Stayin’ Alive, the audience can be forgiven for thinking that the real Bee Gees are there. The members of the UK Bee Gees have worked together since 1990 and have performed all over the world, including in Europe, the USA and Asia. They regularly host sell-out concerts in the UK and abroad and have performed at many of the top international venues and hotels. Doors open this Saturday night, 27 May, at 7pm for an 8pm start. Tickets are $20. Inquiries to the Warwick RSL Memorial Club on 4661 1229 or visit www.warwickrsl.com.au.

The Chinese rain tree is widely used in gardens and as street trees in Warwick where it provides year round interest, and over the last few weeks has looked really spectacular. I realise it is an environmental weed in this part of Queensland and in northern NSW, but it is a really attractive tree and not being a dense shade, it is useful in town gardens. It is easily spread by seeds that germinate readily in six to eight days, but seedlings are easily removed if they come up in a garden or mown off if they come up in the lawn. A weed is only a plant out of place and I would think that the rain tree only becomes an environmental menace if planted in an area where it can’t be easily controlled - such as a windbreak or shade tree in a paddock. They tolerate dry conditions well, producing yellow flowers in summer followed by the bright orange/red “paper lanterns” that hold six seeds and hang on, gradually losing colour, all through winter. It is considered a “city tolerant” tree as it handles pollution, drought, heat and alkaline soils. The bark is thin and easily damaged, so be careful when mowing and trimming around them. The wood is brittle and they need pruning when young to make them thicken up and become more dense and attractive. Another really beautiful plant with spectacular flowers is the Gloriosa lily.
Don’t forget the bus trip to the Queensland Garden Expo at Nambour on 8 July. Join us for a fun-filled, interesting and informative day out. Tickets are available at Danny Lyons and include travel, morning tea and entry to the Expo. Also I look forward to seeing you at the free information night being held by the Horticultural Society in the CWA rooms next Wednesday commencing 7.00pm sharp. Supper will be served at the conclusion.
It is a vigorous climber that attaches to the support - provided by means of tendrils - at the end of the stem-less leaves. It is listed among the most expensive flowers as it sells for $10-$20 per stem. It is best to plant it in a pot as the tubers/rhizomes tend to spread underground and can be very difficult to remove from open soil. It needs something to climb on and in my case it is near a piece of good strong mesh attached to the fence. They are frost tender but I have found that the plants come up again each year even though the vine will die off in the winter. Once again it can be a pest and should not be grown in the sandy coastal soil that it loves as it spreads so easily to the detriment of the native plants. The flowers should be removed when spent as the plants can be grown from seed, although it takes from 30-40 days for them to germinate. The Gloriosa Rothschildiana is a native of tropical Africa and the national flower of Zimbabwe where it is known as the flame lily. The large, spectacular, pendulous flowers are red with yellow frilly edges and the petals swept back from the flower centre. The tubers can be guaranteed to flower in the first year and a mature tuber can produce up to 25 flowers - they make an excellent cut flower lasting up to two weeks. Another very expensive plant with the Rothschild name is the Rothschild’s Orchid valued at about $9500 per plant. It was only discovered in 1987 and almost became extinct as plant smugglers rushed to trade in it. Today the only place you can see this beautiful orchid growing in the wild is in the Kinabalu National Park in Malaysia.
This week I thought I would test your knowledge with a flower quiz. The questions will be in two parts separated by a hyphen. The answers are all flowers and can be found on page 20. 1.

During heavy rainfall events large volumes of stormwater enters the sewer system causing it to overflow and spill sewerage directly into Quart Pot Creek. A smoke testing, manhole inspection and house drain inspection programme will commence on 29 May 2017 in order to detect defects in the pipework that allows stormwater to enter the sewer system. This program will continue for some weeks. The smoke is non-toxic but residents are advised to avoid exposure to the smoke. Residents will be advised when their area is to be tested via a letterbox drop. If you have any queries, please contact Council on 1300 697 372.

The Bush Cook likes to be a bit mysterious so we can’t give her a ‘by-line’, but here’s her simple curry recipe to beat those winter blues ... ‘Bush Cook’s Curry’ This is a simple curry that can be made with ingredients from any pantry. While the Bush Cook realises there is a vast array of readymade curry pastes available to purchase or prepare these day, if you live some distance from town as the Bush Cook has, these are not always an option. Most pantries, however, do contain a tin of curry powder. METHOD Chop an onion, stalk of celery

mixes go very nicely and add a different texture. If you want to make it a sweet curry, try adding a handful of sultanas and a peeled and chopped apple. That was how my mother used to make it many, many years ago. This can be made in a slow cooker or on the stove top and can be reheated and eaten the next day ... the curry flavour is always better then. If you are on your own it also freezes well in meal sized containers.

and some capsicum and soften in a little oil or butter. Add about a tablespoon of curry powder and stir for about a minute. Vary this according to your personal taste. Add a chopped carrot, some corn kernels, peas, chopped potato and whatever other vegetables you have on hand (zucchini, sweet potato, beans, pumpkin, shredded cabbage, etc). If you find you have been a little heavy handed with the curry powder, add an extra potato as this absorbs the flavour. Just cover with water and add some stock cubes. Simmer until the vegetables are tender and then add a tin of chick peas, drained and rinsed, for a vegetarian curry or if you have leftover roast or barbecued chicken, chop it up and add it at the last to heat through. Season with salt and pepper and thicken it slightly. Serve with whatever rice you have in the cupboard. Those new quinoa, ancient grain and rice

Half a century and still strong By Jeremy Sollars Former Collegians players and supporters in conjunction with the Warwick Cowboys held a 50th reunion last Saturday to celebrate the 1967 Collegians Rugby League Club winning all three premierships in the Warwick and District Rugby League competition. League legends Wayne Bennett who captained the Under 18s back in ’67 - and Shane Webcke were there, with Shane regaling the audience with tales from his early years in professional footy. The reunion followed Saturday
morning’s junior games between Collegians and Eastern Suburbs, including the clash between Under 16 Collegians White and Eastern Suburbs for the Ian Jones and Daniel May Memorial Trophy. The trophy remembers the loss in a car accident of Eastern Suburbs player Ian Jones and his mate Daniel May of Collegians. The Warwick Cowboys A-Grade side had another strong win in the TRL competition last weekend, defeating Brothers in Toowoomba 4622 after downing Gatton the previous weekend 20-16.

Origin One minus Slater The
spin With Casey O’Connor email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com
The die has been cast and the teams announced for next week’s Origin One. Selections on both sides of the border have raised some eyebrows. Laurie Daley has gone to extremes naming an extended bench of 20 players. Boyd Cordner takes the reins as the Blue’s captain. Making their returns to the Blue’s fold are Mitchell Pearce and Jarryd Hayne. Nathan Peats gets his chance on the big stage after the injury-prone Peter Wallace was ruled out after failing to finish the game for the Panthers against Newcastle on Sunday. NSW BLUES: - 1. James Tedesco, (Tigers) 2. Blake Ferguson, (Roosters) 3. Josh Dugan, (St George) 4. Jarryd Hayne, (Titans), 5. Brett Morris, (Bulldogs), 6. James Maloney, (Sharks) 7. Mitchell Pearce, (Roosters) 8. Aaron Woods, (Tigers) 9. Nathan Peats, (Titans) 10. Andrew Fifita, (Sharks) 11. Josh Jackson, (Bulldogs) 12. Boyd Cordner,(Roosters) (captain), 13. Tyson Frizell (St George) Interchange: 14. Sam Thaiday, (Broncos) 16. Aidan Guerra, (Roosters) 17. Jacob Lillyman, (Warriors) 18th man: Johnathan Thurston, (Cowboys) North of the border emotions were running high when coach Kevin Walters announced a somewhat controversial decision to leave Billy Slater out of the Maroons line-up. It was a big call by selectors and has divided Maroons supporters many of whom see it as a slight on one of Queensland’s finest. The JT shoulder soap opera rolls into its 29th episode. Named as 18th man it is still unclear if JT the Maroons most resilient player will add to his uninterrupted record number of games. Perhaps he should be sharing a quiet chat with Billy about the perils of playing about with shoulder injuries. Meanwhile, the game of ducks and drakes between Walters and Bennett looks to have reached checkmate, stalemate or no-mates after Walters stepped up to Bennett’s challenge and named Milford as Queensland’s number six. The Queensland selectors have shown remarkable loyalty in other areas with Origin war horse Nate Myles called on for another performance. Young Rooster Dylan Nappa will get his chance to done the Maroon as we begin to see a small changing of the guard in the Maroons camp. While my Spin partner is outraged at the omission of Slater and continues muttering her disapproval and fears of impending doom and gloom, I’m still firmly in the Maroons camp and think they will win at Suncorp in what looks on paper to be another epic. Let’s hope Kevvie’s bold selections do no come back to bite him and his fellow Qld selectors - there will be plenty of Queenslanders lining up for a piece of them if this goes pear shaped. - Casey (keeping the faith) LEGEND CELEBRATES A MIGHTY MILESTONE Those regular readers of Spin over the years will be well versed in my association with Lew Coo-
This picture of the 1969 Houghton Cup grand finalists took on extra significance for many former players this week with the passing of Vic Bennett a former Stanthorpe player and coach. Sadly there will be three missing places at the table when this group next meets. Bennett, John Scott and John McGrath have all left us but should not be forgotten. Those who played under the Stanthorpe Rugby League banner prior to the formation of the Gremlins left a strong and rich legacy which should never be overlooked. Back row from left, Neil (Casey) O'Connor, David Haynes, John Scott, Bob Webb, John McGrath, Lester Mason, Don Brown. Front row from left, Gary Smith, Eric Smith, Vic Bennett, Dennis Pennisi (captain coach), Raff Euler, Barry Mapes and Mickey Campbell. per. Last weekend I was privileged to be invited to help Lew celebrate his 80th birthday. A great milestone for a man who is synonymous with cricket throughout Queensland. His exploits behind the stumps for Queensland and University are hard to ignore. It is a record that boast 361 catches and 99 stumpings and while best remembered as the great Wally Grout’s permanent understudy, many forget Cooper was pretty handy with the bat. In his indomitable fashion, he was dismissed only 33 times in 54 innings in the top grade. Lew has been an extremely successful administrator, publican, football coach in a colorful career. He once beat world champion snooker player Eddy Charlton in a snooker game at the Cricket’s Club and forever secured bragging rights for that effort. It is however Lew Cooper’s contribution to cricket in his post playing career which has earned him the most accolades. While a chiropractor might look at his current posture and see a lifetime of patient care, those who have crossed his path know him as a raconteur, a person who has provided opportunities to young cricketers and those less fortunate. His tireless contribution is part of the tapestry of Queensland cricket and earned him an OAM. The significant contribution Lew Cooper has delivered the game and the respect with which he is held may be best summed up by this work penned by Rupert McCall for the occasion and delivered by fellow wicket keeper Ian Healy. Ode to Lew Cooper There’s a name that seems to reappear, again, again, again ... A hero of the humble kind! An icon of the nation! A champion of life itself! An unsung inspiration! Though if pressed to furnish one thing on his high-achieving ticket Then the verdict is unanimous, the word you’d choose is ‘cricket’ From the glory of the Gabba to the grassroots of the State He’s a warrior! A Wanderer! A mentor and a mate Is it really any wonder that our country gives three cheers!
As this very proud Australian lifts his bat for 80 years For an innings most spectacular, sensational and super! We raise our glass in honour of the legendary ... Lew Cooper Rupert McCall, 2017 ROUND 11 - DISASTER Round 11 of the NRL proved to be another nightmare round for plenty of tipsters and the thought of leaving a game or switching off the TV and going to bed before full time has been thrown out the door with many likely half timers leaders once again biting the dust in the second half. Along with them went the aspirations of plenty of forlorn tipsters - this one included. It’s almost a relief to have the split round upon us where as tipsters we only have to navigate a handful of games. I thought the Eels a little disappointing last week and am giving the Bunnies another go. The Broncos have plenty of players in the Maroons camp and have to travel to NZ for their Warriors clash, but I am pinning my hopes on the depth of the Broncos and the opportunities handed to some of the fringe players. Like the Broncos, the Sharks and Bulldogs will be down on personnel, but with Paul Gallen at the helm of the Sharks I favour them to get another win. I doubt the Roosters have the depth to cover their Origin players, so I am tipping Ricky’s Raiders. Of course, after my form in recent weeks the wise thing would probably be to just reverse those decisions. And, of course, let’s not forget a Maroons win to set the stage for Origin 2017. BATTLE ROUND COMING UP IN CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS Round Three in the battle for the Club Championships of the Stanthorpe Golf Club was decided last Saturday, and with the final round to be decided this weekend several players have played themselves contention. Matt Waterworth and Grant Howard are both well placed in A Grade, and at this stage it looks most likely that the winner of the major title will come from this pair.
Christian Waterworth gives the thumbs up as he is loaded into an ambulance after breaking his leg during the game against Inter on Saturday.
Lew Cooper shares a laugh with fellow Queensland keepers Ian Healy and John McLean during his 80th birthday festivities. The B Grade leader board has condensed following round three and Mike McAuliffe and Graham Tonkin are leading by the smallest of margins just one shot ahead of Bill Pyne and Lyle Bryant. Bob Watts and Max Hunter look set battle for the title in the C Grade competition, but if either stumbles, Rod Werner could cause an upset. In last Saturday’s single stroke event sponsored by club member Peter Hines by Aaron Simmers post nett 69 to score a one shot win over Mike McAuliffe and Lyle Bryant. McAuliffe claimed the runners-up spot in a countback, with Bryant collecting a ball in the run down. Matt Waterworth collected balls for his pin shot 12, pro-pin at 5/14 and in the run down. Adrian Jannenga also collected a double for the pin at 17 and the pro-pin at 1/10. Sam Dowie held the remaining pro-pin at 9/18 and Eric McLellan had best pin shot at three. Grant Howard and Peter Gibney collected a ball in the run down. The Ladies event was won by Nikki Waterworth with a score of nett 73. Lyn Ludlow (nett 76) finished runner-up and Madeline Jarman collected a ball in the run down. Fiona Kelly held the ladies pin at three and Mandy Benussi won the approach at 17. The final round of the club championships will be played on Saturday. Alan Kerr and Dale Minchenton are sponsors of the single stroke event. For players completing all rounds, a seeded draw has been posted on the time sheet at the club. Spaces after the seedings may be used by players not in the four rounds but playing in the day’s event. Refer to the time sheet for your tee off time. Good luck and good golfing to all those competing in the last championship round.

Local Sport ORIENTEERING PROVES POPULAR Orienteering is a sport that is growing in popularity. It is easily accessible to people of all ages, can be enjoyed by all members of the family and does not require mountains of expensive specialist gear. Last weekend the local club the Bullecourt Bounders hosted a successful event at Cherrabah outside Warwick and this weekend the Range Runners Orienteering Club is holding an event in the Goomburra Valley. Proving the growing international popularity of sport, attending the event was the Campbell family from Washington State, USA. The Campbell family belong to the Maple Falls Orienteering club and have been travelling and orienteering in Australia and New Zealand, and Victoria Campbell was the winner of the Hard Two course on the weekend. After enjoying the challenges of the Granite Belt and Southern Downs terrain last weekend, the family will head back home this week. The sport of Orienteering is certainly gaining momentum and the terrain in and around our district has become a major drawcard for competitors. This weekend the Range Runners Orienteering Club are holding events at Gordon Country in the Goomburra Valley. Nine courses will cater to all levels of fitness, age and ability. Instruction will be available for newcomers, and families may wish to go around a course together. Starts for the events will be open from 1pm 4pm on Saturday and again from 9am - 10am on Sunday. Anyone interested in trying orienteering is most welcome to attend, and compasses may be borrowed at the event. One of the drawcards of the sport is that no special gear is required although it is recommended participants wear good sturdy footwear and a hat. A large number of Darling Downs junior orienteers are expected to compete over the weekend using the event as an opportunity to train ahead of the Queensland Schools Championships in July. The event will be signposted along the Inverammsey Road, 25km from Goomburra. Further information is available at www.oq.asn. au/events or by contacting Felicity Crosato on 4698 1538 or rroc@oq.asn.au PENTATH POPULAR The annual daily New Pentath run event held last weekend in Warwick was again a huge success. Nominations for the event were in the vicinity of 2600. As part of her training for the upcoming Queensland Cross Country Championships, 18- year-old Brielle Erbacher travelled from Toowoomba to compete. She competed in three events and went home with three wins, and is vowing to be back again next year. Erbacher is the current under-20 national champion in the 3000m steeplechase. Overall winner of the women’s event was Kerri Hodge from Margot Manning. In the men’s event, Aidan Hobbs won four events and placed second in the YMCA Half Marathon behind winner Charlie Boyle. TOUGH GREENS AT ‘GARRA Members and visitors played a flag event at Wallangarra Golf Club on Saturday and on a day where the greens for some reason were difficult to
Officials were scrambling to find any rulings covering canines and firearms as Ziggy showed a keen interest in Saturday's shoot at Inglewood Sporting Shooters range. hit it was John Green who posted a win. Runner-up in the event was Steve Hampstead. There were no pin shots recorded - Whether that was that because of difficult placement or poor player radar, we will never know. Peter Williams at least snatched the Birdies nest at the fourth hole. The club would like to welcome Jnr and congratulate him on his first competition round. With a swing like Jnr’s it won’t be long till he will be giving the rest of the members swing tips. Congratulations also to Simon Avery who carded his best round since starting a few weeks ago. This weekend numbers on the greens are sure to swell as the Hodgson clan and friends join members for the popular Frank Hodgson Memorial Trophy. The single stableford event will tee off at 10am and club members are reminded that there is a meeting prior to the game. ACTION ON THE RANGE The Inglewood Sporting Shooters Assoc held Muzzle Loading and Pistol events on Saturday. Stephanie Dudgeon took out the Muzzle Loading event. Placegetters were Alan Hudson and Graham Morgan. The 25 Metre Standard Pistol shoot was won by Peter Jones. Tom Donald and Jason Lewis filled the minor placings. FORECAST KEEPS GATEBALLERS AT BAY A forecast of unpredictable weather conditions last Friday saw gateball numbers down last week. Andrea Denkewitz, Joy Newman and Heather Widderick formed one team and played the Red balls. Margaret Dickenson, Les Williams and Sharyn Roser teamed up to play the White balls. The members of the White team had a great day out, winning all three games. Each game however was closely contested going down to the wire and only decided in the final couple of minutes of each game. In game one Margaret Dickenson scored a five pointer to put the game out of reach of the opposition. The final score 13-10. In game two, it was Sharyn Roser who scored an Agari (five pointer) to seal a 14-9 win. The result of the third game came down to the final shot. Games are limited to 30 minutes and the Red team had a chance to steal a win but went down 10-9. Game four was abandoned after rain interrupted play. Conditions were much better for Saturday’s games and saw Andrea Denkewitz, Margaret Dick-
enson and Val Fancourt (White) teamed up against the Red team of Bill Golding and Les Williams. The Red team played with great accuracy, especially on some long shots winning all three games. In game one the final score was a convincing 17-9. Games two and three were decided with the final shot. Game two was closer 10-8 and the final game went the way of Red 13-12. SERIOUS INJURY CALLS HALT TO GAME It was an afternoon of mixed results and emotions at the Internal Club last Saturday. The Inter club Ladies game were celebrating after they posted their first win in over three years. Spectators and players were equalled as excited after the game. The euphoria of the win was short-lived however when a nasty injury to City players Christian Waterworth from Stanthorpe City forced the men’s game to cut short. Waterworth suffered a nasty break to his leg and as Spin was being finalised he was in Toowoomba awaiting surgery on his broken shin bone. Reports indicate the break will require a rod to be inserted from his knee to his ankle. It is very unfortunate when our weekend sportsmen and women suffer such nasty injuries. It is going to be a long road back from injury for Christian Waterworth and the sporting community wish him a successful recovery. Sporters headed out on Sunday in ideal conditions for a round of golf. Ian Anderson certainly enjoyed the conditions notching up a Sporters in while Aaron Simmers fresh from a win in Round three of the Club championships on Saturday finished runner-up. Run-downs went to Paul Armstrong and Nikki Waterworth. Armstrong also had the best gross and took the pin shot on the 17th. Ray Thorn picked up the pin shot on the 12th and the pro pin went to Jerry Willoughby. It was Woggie and Peter Goodsir taking home meat trays last Sunday. Sporters tee-off on Sunday at the normal time of 8.am - 8.30am. Remember visitors and new faces are always welcome to join the fun. Preparations for Broncos Western 9s A 15-year tradition will continue when the St George Junior Rugby League Club hosts its annual Western 9s Carnival for under-14s in September. Organisers are asking interested teams to register their interest by Friday 2 June. An expression of interest sheet can be found on the club’s website or by contacting Kelvin Bella by phone or email (mob: 0428 717 284; kbella3@bigpond.com) Carnival invitations and information will then be sent out by mid/end of July. This nine-a-side competition (max 14 players registered per team) is for under 14s and will be played at Rowden Park St George Southwest Qld and / or the St George High School Grounds It anticipated that there will be Broncos personnel attending the annual carnival. The St George Junior Rugby League Club cannot guarantee all clubs will be invited however those that respond via the expression of interest sheet and are available will be given preference. BACK TO BACK FOR COWBOYS The Warwick Cowboys put together back to back wins on Saturday night when they defeated Brothers on their home turf Glenholme Park. After an up and down start to the season the
Cowboys have managed to put together consecutive wins for the first time in 2017 and showed they are a side on the improve. Mick Bloomfield has had a real impact since his return from a lengthy suspension and was once again proved a force to be reckoned with. Jordyn Hogden was another of the Cowboys who impressed in the win. Brothers’ home ground has proved to be a happy hunting ground for the Warwick A grade side in recent years and they have an impressive record in night games at the ground. Dan Watson led the scoring with two tries and five conversions. Joe Fuimaono was as always reliable and also scored a double. The win sets up an interesting clash this week against Goondiwindi. The impressive 46-24 A Grade win gave the visitors a clean sweep in all grades Reserve Grade defeated Brothers 30-18; Cowboy’s Under 18’s had a 30-8 win and in second division Warwick notched up a 30-16 win. A GRADE: Warwick 46 (Dan Watson 2, Joe Fuimaono 2, Dylan Galloway, Josh O’Brien, Jordyn Hogden, Matt Marshall, Dion Galloway tries Dan Watson 5 goals) defeated Brothers 24 ( Kahl Schemioneck, Aidan Watterson, Zack Wright, Ben Hollman tries Brayden Barratt 2, Kyle Walker 2 goals) This week the Cowboys travel to Goondiwindi. The under-18s will be trying to secure a spot in the President’s Cup clash between the leading teams at the end of round one. CUTTERS TOO STRONG FOR GREMLINS The Killarney Cutters put on an impressive try scoring display against an understrength young Gremlins outfit at Sullivan /Oval on Saturday. Jamie Watts led the way scoring four of the Cutters 14 tries. Cashing in on the try scoring also were Gareth Polzin, Jacob Grayson and Ian Brown picked up a double. There was a procession of other try scorers as the experienced Cutters forwards stepped up. Aside from Jamie Watts, Mick Brackin and Ian Brown were standouts for the Cutters. The young Gremlins side worked hard for each other. Corey Ashleigh and Lachlan Hendry were two of the best and both crossed for the home side. Aaron Abraham landed one conversion. TENTERFIELD TURN THE TABLES The Tenterfield Tigers turned the tables on last year’s premiers the Roosters in an exciting match at Rugby League Park. The Tigers held out the Roosters with an improved defensive performance in the second half. The win was popular with the big local crowd and shows that the although the BRL comp may be down to only four teams this season it is going to be very competitive.
