By Peter Douglas IN THE winter months, it can be tempting to camp yourself indoors with a nice ‘cuppa’, rather than venture too far from the heater. But why would you, with so much on offer in the Yarra Ranges, an area that knows not the meaning of hibernation. Just consider some of the hot tourism options available within close proximity to most of the beautiful townships that line the region. For starters, snow play at Lake Mountain Resort! Sitting amid the many trails, and the inviting restaurant, is a dedicated snow play area, which is perfect for first-timers to the snow, or those looking to rekindle that childlike wonder one experiences as snow hits the treetops. Then, there are the Christmas in July activities in the Dandenong Ranges, as well as the recently opened Bunjil lookout trail at the Birdsland Reserve, which is proving enormously popular with the locals. Journalist Derek Schlennstedt personally hiked the trail and has penned his experiences for you to explore. If you’re looking for a quick fix through a day-trip, we’ve highlighted five things to do in beautiful Yarra Glen, as well as highlighted the attractions of magical Marysville. In our last edition, we highlighted the favourite pastime of bird-watching; this time around we’ve got the shutterbugs covered. Budding photographer and born ‘n’ bred local Jesse Graham has highlighted his favourite spots to snap, as well as some tips to help you get the most out of your camera and the region’s beautiful landscapes. Steavenson Falls and Maroondah Dam make up just some of the options. So this winter, please do put on your winter woollies - but I’m afraid there is too much on offer to sit at home in front of the heater. Get out there and explore the Yarra Ranges this winter!

CHRISTMAS IN JULY

CHRISTMAS fARe IN peRfeCT SeTTINg By Derek SchlennSteDt CHRISTMAS. The holiday so nice you can have it twice. For visitors to the Dandenong Ranges, Christmas in its usual month of December is a hot and sweaty experience, likely to be filled with seafood and salad, great Champagne, and luscious desserts. But Christmas in winter, is a classic setting and is all about traditional fare. Hot roasts and gravy with lots of vegetables. Ham off the bone, turkey, apple sauce, or cranberry and steaming plum pudding with brandy custard. As the mercury plummets and the winter mists swirl around the tall trees or cloak the valleys, the atmosphere is set and appetites primed for the sort of Christmas fare that you really just can’t enjoy in December. Winter in July has become considerably popular over the years, and as temperatures fall, the Dandenong Ranges remains the perfect location to celebrate Christmas in July with various restaurants hosting cosy lunches and dinners. There’s a variety to choose from, with several cafes and restaurants dusting off the Christmas CDs, Priming log fires, and putting up the tinsel to recreate the sort of Christmas reminiscent of Northern Hemisphere Christmas cards and movies that aren’t really quite right in December. With a small sampling of frost covering the ground, and maybe even a bit of snow on the trees, bring your friends and family to enjoy some great food and drink in front of a roaring fire in the misty Dandenong Ranges. Sky High, Mt Dandenong not only offers exquisite scenic views of the Dandenong Ranges and Melbourne City but are just one of many venues that hold a Christmas in July event each year. Special lunches include glazed hams followed by plum pudding with brandy sauce and all this can be enjoyed while watching a vivid red, purple and orange sunset disappear over the horizon. The true European Christmas has always been a beautiful Hollywood clique, snow covered trees, delicious European dessert and roaring fires in cosy chalets. The Cuckoo in the Dandenong ranges offers a smorgasbord of traditional German food and Christmas favourites and lets you live your hollywood dream. With a dusting of white snow in Sherbrook forest, beautifully decorated,

preTTy as a picTure By Jesse Graham ONE undeniable thing about the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges is that they’re easy to take a great photo of. Whether you’re driving through wineries en route to Healesville with the sun overhead, spending a cold, cloudy day cooped up in a cafe or wandering forest paths in autumn, there’s always something to photograph and the Yarra Ranges always has its best on display. For a surreal and beautiful view just five minutes out of town, Maroondah Reservoir Park is a not-to-miss attraction. It’s easy to spend the whole day wandering paths, having a picnic in the gardens or walking across the dam wall to the lookout. Any budding landscape photographers can set up their tripod along the wall and have a gorgeous view of the water and forest, though the long curve of the wall itself is absolutely worth photographing. Further along the highway, about an hour out of Healesville, is Marysville the town is the gateway to Lake Mountain Alpine Resort, Steavenson Falls and surrounding forests, which provide plenty of places to adventure as autumn turns into winter.

walk, with a spectacular view from the top that demands to be captured in a photograph. The base of the waterfall, which can be seen from viewing platforms, is perfect for photographers after a smooth long exposure shot, where the water blurs and its movement can be seen. To take a good long exposure, it’s important to slow down the shutter speed on a digital camera - flick the dial over to manual, then dial the shutter speed down as close to one second as possible. Shutter speeds are measured in fractions of a second, so a speed of 1/200 is one two hundredth of a second - great for capturing movement, but not perfect for capturing the flow of water. When the shutter speed is measured in seconds, it should read 1”. Because the longer shutter speed will let more light onto the camera’s sensor, it’s important to close down the aperture, which determines how much light passes through the lens to the camera and the depth of field (how much will be in focus) - a higher number means a smaller aperture, less light coming in and a deeper focus, while a lower number means a wider aperture, more light and a thin focus. Shutter speeds and aperture work together to create an image, and photographers can use either setting to create their photo, whether they

During the day, dark filters are often needed to be able to get a properlyexposed photo with a long shutter speed - or long exposures can be taken at night, when there is less light coming into the camera. Day or night, it’s always important to check your photos, play around with settings and figure out how to expose your photos correctly - especially before you leave the area you’ve been photographing. Olinda Falls, in the Dandenong Ranges, is a hidden gem that’s perfect for adventure and photographs. A few hundred metres from the car park are the falls, which can be seen from a viewing platform - though the forest provides a quiet, cool place to spend the day. When taking portraits or photos of people on your travels, remember that even lighting in the shade or on a cloudy day is perfect for avoiding harsh shadows - or blinding your subject with direct sunlight. MARYSVILLE

ChAngIng fACE of CounTRY TouCh THE face of Richard and Leonie Uden’s Country Touch Boutique has transformed a great deal since its establishment in 1995. Originally constructed as a pottery studio and gallery in Marysville’s main street, the Udens’ mud brick building was once an abundance of pottery kilns and ceramic artefacts. Having eventually decided to focus predominantly on retail items such as homewares, clothing and children’s gifts; the Udens removed their pottery kilns, allowing greater space for their retail endeavours. In 2002, adding to the Marysville community and expanding the Country Touch name, Richard attained accreditation as a commercial tour operator and commenced the Udens’ bus service, the Lake Mountain Snow Bus. However, following the devastation of the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires, and subsequently the loss of the boutique, Richard and Leonie were forced to rebuild their business, and on 1 July 2011, the new Country Touch was officially opened. Yet while it may not be the original store, the Country Touch of today continues to offer unique, quality items that are not often found in regular city retail outlets. Featuring a wide range of cool climate wear, the Udens’ boutique offers superior products from both Australia and New Zealand.

Tour marysville’s sweeT spoTs By Peter Douglas

Garden and the New Life Sculpture.

IS THERE a more effective way to re-charge the batteries than through a day trip?

Gallipoli Park includes a gazebo and ‘garden rooms’, and the New Life Sculpture.

Why not try beautiful Marysville which is noted not only for its inspiring surrounds but also for its many activities that are awaiting discovery.

The sculpture is a permanent symbol of new life in the community so visitors should take time to reflect and to enjoy this space.

To help the journey, Tourist News has mapped out the perfect day in Marysville - from start to finish.

3.30pm (Bruno’s Art Gallery) This simply had to be included on the list. This destination features the original, unique artworks of local sculpture and painter Bruno Torfs.

8.30am (Lady Talbot Forest drive) To get acclimatised try the Lady Talbot Forest drive.

Nestled among the rainforest setting lives a collection of unforgettable characters, lovingly hand-crafted by Bruno from clay and fired onsite in his kiln.

Starting at Woods Point Road, the drive follows the Taggerty River valley up to the top of Mount Margaret Gap. From there complete the 46km Lady Talbot drive by continuing down Mount Margaret Road, through the state forest to the Buxton-Marysville Road, and back to Marysville. Perhaps, pack a Thermos and enjoy a hot cuppa at one of the numerous picnic spots. 10.30am (Keppel Lookout Trail and Steavenson Falls) After taking in the scenery, it may be time to get the experience in full. The trail starts at Kings Road Car Park, Marysville, and winds up through the forest to four of the region’s top lookouts. Follow the trail across Roberston Gully before climbing up to Keppell Lookout, around the ridge - passing Oxlee and De La Rue lookouts and to the top of Steavenson Falls. Descend to the base and follow the Tree Fern

Located along Falls Road, Marysville, the popular Gallipoli Park underwent a $1.8 million park redevelopment after the Black Saturday bushfires in 2009.

Also located on Falls Road, this is truly a world of beauty and fantasy that visitors can immerse themselves in for hours. 5pm (Marysville Lolly Shop) With such a big day now in the bag, it’s probably time for a sugar fix. Complete with an endless variety of lollies, including the favourites many may remember as a kid - English Sherbet Fountains, Castlemaine Rock and the old ‘Yorkie’ - there will be plenty of chances to indulge. In addition, the shop often stocks local crafts, foods and skincare products.

Among the features are a children’s playground and a reflective garden.

Located at 8 Murchison Street, Marysville, this stop-off will be the sweet spot in what will have been an unforgettable day.

TRAILS Bunjil wedge tail eagle artwork can be found along the trail and Bunjil can often be seen soaring above. Picture: DEREK SCHLENNSTEDT

SoAR LIke A BunjIL By Derek SchlennSteDt IN AUSTRALIAN aboriginal mythology, Bunjil is a creator deity, an ancestral being often depicted as a wedge tail eagle soaring above the clouds looking down upon the world. A new Bunjil lookout trail at Birdsland Reserve in the Dandenong Ranges is aptly named after the wedge tail deity and is the perfect lookout for hikers and tourists. On a clear day, visitors can get the same sky-high view that an eagle gets with the spectacular scenic views of Melbourne and beyond. Set in the immersive bushland of the Dandenong Ranges, Birdsland is only a five-minute drive from Belgrave. More than 130 species of native birds call the 75 hectare reserve home and quite often when hiking along one of the many trails visitors can see Bunjil - the wedge tail eagle - circling high above. The recent addition to the reserve is the Bunjil lookout trail which is only a short walk from the car park. Winding its way up a hill, the trail zigs and zags through bushland and open plains before reaching the lookout where a view of the entire reserve awaits. It’s not for the faint-hearted and while it is only 850 metres in length, the trail includes steep terrain, steps and some uneven surfaces. At every step and every turn there is something to see, whether it be a wallaby waiting and staring curiously from its safe haven behind a tree or a small blue tongue meandering across the path. Behind each turn awaits a surprise.

The trail culminates in an impressive scenic view of Melbourne. Pictures: DEREK SCHLENNSTEDT Over rocks and cross bridges, the newly built path is an architectural dream with granite bridges made by local stonemasons, which are feats to be admired. Large natural rocks are placed perfectly along the track and provide walkers with somewhere to sit and relax while taking in the views. For the Instagram photographer, a sunset photograph is perfect to attract the likes and the Bunjil lookout is sure to provide a boost for extra followers. However, visitors should be sure to exit the reserve before the gates close. The Bunjil lookout trail provides is a beautiful walk among the trees, with natural wildlife, picture-perfect sunsets and cityscape views. The Birdlands Reserve entrance is located off Mount Morton Road in Belgrave South and closing times vary depending on the season. Check the signs at the park entrance for details.

Q&A wiTh winemAker, TrAvis Bush, GreensTone vineyArds By Peter Douglas Tell us your story! Fresh out of an applied chemistry degree in 1993-ish, hating the idea of being stuck in a lab in a large building complex, and needing a job, I knocked on the door of Yarra Ridge winery. Unknown to me, this was to be the start of my career, and love of the grape and its fabulous creations. Testing (and tasting) samples, followed by assisting in the cellar, this led to questions and intrigue. Travels in Europe and winemaking in Spain, France and Germany, (when it was easy as a flying winemaker) showed me the great diversity of this craft industry. Completing a post-graduate degree in 1999 at Adelaide Uni, followed by a small stint back in the Yarra Valley, and then onto Central Victoria and its granitic country, this is where my interest in the elegance of medium bodied shiraz peaked. Such power, richness and great tannin structures without over-ripeness and big alcohols. Returning back to the Yarra Valley with its fruit, and having fantastic clones of shiraz and sangiovese from our Heathcote vineyard, what more could one ask for? Tell us three things about your style of wines? Our style is about fruit concentration and purity, muscle with refinement, and drive. Are you excited over this year’s vintage? Yes. It has been a while since we have had such a cool vintage (with sunlight) slowing the ripening of the fruit. This has given us better opportunity to assess the fruit flavours in determining the harvesting of the fruit. My picks this year are the chardonnay and cabernet varietals. There are some real highlights. Yarra Valley Cabernet is such a fantastic wine with great ageing capability. There is a real market drive toward pinot noir and chardonnay, but I think cabernet will ultimately make a return as its medium weight, lovely cassis, dark fruit and fine tannins make it an appealing drink in its youth, while some cellaring will allow the secondary savoury notes to make their way into the wines. The cabernets from this year won’t be as concentrated as the last few years, but are certainly not lacking fruit either. What varieties are you particularly looking forward to bottling/ tasting? I am looking forward to bottling our Cordon Cut Viognier. This is the first time we have made this wine, with the grapes having previously been sold to other parties. Some lovely nectarine, apricot and citrus fruits are showing through already, and with the approximately 200g/l residual sugar level it has, the fruit is carried a long way by it. The wine, although sweet, has a lovely natural acid balance keeping the wine vibrant. The only part I am not looking forward to is the bottling itself, as the 375ml bottles are always tumbling over due to the shape, but looking forward to seeing the wine in the bottle. Who is on your winemaking team? We have a large winemaking team, as I view everyone as part of the 20 WINTER 2017

winemaking. The integral guys in the team are Callan Randall and Martin George, as they do the hard yards in the vineyard producing the fantastic fruit we try not to make any vinegars with. In the winery, instruction is provided by myself and Sam Atherton, but execution is performed by Amanda Flynn, David Li and Janene Millar, and our expert lab tech, John Cubelo (JC) shouldn’t be forgotten either. I think sometimes too much emphasis is put on a winemaker, but it is rare that wines are not in some way a team effort.

“i Think someTimes Too much emphAsis is puT on A winemAker, BuT iT is rAre ThAT wines Are noT in some wAy A TeAm efforT…” What do you love about living in the Yarra Valley? Country folk, and being on the edge of the ‘burbs’. I think it is the perfect place to live for the following points: Working in a great industry, although it has been tough for a long time now. People are friendly and willing to help out, and still say ‘hello’ to each other. In a one-hour drive you can be water-skiing, snow skiing, at the beach, at the MCG or at the airport. It suits my family lifestyle perfectly. The quesTions below are answered by cellar door manager Joanne TaTe What are the top drops to enjoy in the cooler winter months? Winter is perfect for any reds, our 2015 pinot is drinking beautifully at the moment and sadly there is not much left. Another red, sangiovese an Italian variety from our Heathcote vineyard - is also the flavour of the month, if you haven’t tried this variety winter is the best time to discover this wine. Our shiraz and cabernet sauvignon are also superb to enjoy with your winter casseroles and hearty meals. Why are cellar doors so inviting for tourists? Cellar doors are the best way to discover the range of wines a winery has in their portfolio. Cellar door staff are passionate about the wines they are pouring and are more than happy to share their knowledge. Usually you will find cellar doors have specials only available on that day and many provide food, music or activities to enhance your experience. What can people learn from visiting a winery? How wine is made and an appreciation of different varieties that are suitable to grow in our cool climate region. At Greenstone vineyards you have the opportunity to try wines we make from two regions, Yarra Valley and Heathcote. Touristnews

What do you think is so special about the Yarra Valley wineries? This region is so close to Melbourne, this is Melburnians’ backyard where they come to play. Every winery is different and there are so many to discover. The region works very well together and cellar door staff are happy to suggest the next place to visit on your travels. Why should tourists consider checking out the Yarra Valley wine scene? You can be travelling on your own, with family or friends and you are always welcomed. There are so many wineries with amazing views. At Greenstone we have the most panoramic view you will find in this wine region. And of course there is the wine, the standard of wine in this region is high with award winning wines. The characters you find along the way telling their wine story makes your discovery more memorable.

What activities, events are coming up this winter? This winter we are excited to launch our Wine Club which will have something special for everyone. We have set aside 18 June 2017 for an open day to see the benefits of joining. There will be tours of the winery with wine makers, barrel tastings, wine club specials and more. July is the annual Gumboot Season promoted by the Yarra Valley Wine Growers association for anyone arriving at cellar door with gumboots will received a discount on their wine purchases. We will also have mulled wine and acoustic music on Sundays in July. Fireside tastings are a must in winter. August will be our annual car boot wine sale - this vineyard was the first in the Yarra Valley to start the car boot sales many years ago and the tradition is continued with other wineries in the region.

HISTORIC PuffING BIlly HAS IT All Boasting onboard experiences with a touch of dance, dinner, music and even murder, Australia’s favourite steam train, Puffing Billy, is making tracks in 2017. Commencing its operation in Australia on 18 December, 1900, Puffing Billy travels 25 kilometres through the forest and fern gullies of the magnificent Dandenong Ranges, travelling from Belgrave to Gembrook. One of two survivors of five experimental narrow gauge lines used to develop rural area in Victoria during the 1900s, Puffing Billy is a historical treasure with a twist of onboard entertainment to suit every passenger throughout 2017. For the quizzical mind, an intriguing night of murder, mystery and suspense is up for grabs aboard ‘Murder on the Puffing Billy Express’, with passengers invited to dress in either 1920s or 1930s fashion attire. With prizes offered to the best dressed, the journey is bound to leave passengers asking, ‘who dunnit?’ But if it’s something slightly more relaxing travellers are after, nights of fine food and music are on offer with Puffing Billy’s evenings of live jazz and rhythm and blues. Served up with hearty meals, these nights are bound to ensure passengers have a night to remember!

However, if neither blues nor jazz takes passengers fancy, the new dining train offers travellers the opportunity to simply relax and reconnect with their loved ones, family members and friends in both the Steam and Cuisine after dark and the Steam and Cuisine luncheon events. With heated seats in the train's dining carriages, Puffing Billy is set to ensure passengers of both a comfortable and enjoyable journey. With so much on offer for the whole family at Puffing Billy this winter, chief executive officer, John Robinson said the events program was a unique and exciting aspect to Puffing Billy that kept people coming back to the iconic steam train time and time again. “Our Steam and Cuisine luncheon trains and Dine and Dance trains are always popular and are great for groups or corporate bookings. Other favourites, including Murder on the Puffing Billy Express, Jazz on Puffing Billy Railway as well as Rhythm and Blues on Puffing Bill will be returning due to popular demand. We look forward to welcoming passengers, new and old, onboard Puffing Billy in 2017!” For more information and for all Puffing Billy Railway inquiries, call 9757 0700 or visit www.puffingbilly.com.au

By Kath Gannaway WHAT’S in a gallery? What gallery? What sort of gallery? Winter is a great time to find out. Grab an umbrella, a scarf and your car keys and hit the road to discover the world of art that is a growing drawcard for visitors to Yarra Ranges and the surrounding regions. “We are awash with art” was Yarra Glen artist and gallery owner Reggie Clark’s enthusiastic description of the art scene in the region. Reggie was guest speaker at the Yarra Glen and District Art Show, which attracted hundreds of artworks to the town earlier this year. Art is the fourth element in the region’s outstanding palette of wine, food and environment and there is no shortage of opportunity to immerse yourself in the diverse experience that comes under the broad tag of ‘art’. With two major open studio events in Yarra Ranges and a growing number of private and municipal art galleries, Reggie’s statement is easy to believe. PET PORTRAITS SHOw uNIquE PERSONAlITIES By ReBecca Skilton WITH the stroke of her wrist, Tecoma artist Chrystal Carter can capture the memory of a beloved pet and transform it into a piece of art to last forever and a day. Born in Scotland, Chrystal spent the majority of her life living in a coastal village of Northern Ireland before immigrating to Australia where she began her dream business, Pet Portraits Animal Artist studio. No job is too big or too small for Chrystal, who has been creating hyper realistic pet portraits with a personal touch and exemplary attention to detail since June 2016. “Art is in my blood. My late mother, also an artist, specialized in botanical art,” Chrystal said. “I chose to specialise in animals as they hold a special place in my heart. “I always try to capture the spark of life in their eyes that shows the world their true beauty and unique personality. “I also focus on creating a connection between humans and animals.” Always up for a challenge, Chrystal will create anything her client’s desire. Kids and pets are invited into the Pet Portraits workshop where Chrystal uses a range of media to bring her portraits to life. “Although my usual media is pastel pencils on black card, I can produce work with pencils, charcoal, colouring pencils, acrylics, oils and water colours, on any surface or material - I can copy any style the client wishes,” Chrystal explained. However not only is it Chrystal’s undeniable artistic talent that makes her stand out among the rest, but it’s her passion and appreciation for the animal kingdom that truly marks her work as a jewel in the midst of the spectacular Dandenong Ranges. “Animals make this world a better place. They teach us - they truly are amazing,” Chrystal said. “Without them there would be only us, devoid of elaborate colours. We try to manufacture our beauty, but still pale in comparison to our animal counterparts.” Pet portraits is at 1/1569 Burwood Highway, Tecoma, and is open from 9am to 4pm Monday to Friday. MARKETS ScEnE

Enjoy A liTTlE MARKET ShARE By KATH GANNAWAy IT’S very easy to hibernate in winter when all the outdoor events that got you out and about for the past few months are off the calendar ... and the sofa is extra comfy. Don’t succumb. Nobody wants to spend months with a grumpy hermit - with a vitamin D deficiency! Markets are the answer ... and there is no shortage of interesting and diverse markets around the hills and valleys. It’s not all about the spend ... although a little retail therapy can also do amazing things to lift the spirits! It’s about getting out, discovering new places, unearthing new (or old) treasures, catching up with amazing artisans and craftspeople, finding that book you’ve always wanted to read (The Old Man and the Sea?), gathering fresh produce for a hearty soup, or just ‘window’ shopping. Throughout the region there is an abundance of markets to suit every niche from farmers’ markets selling gourmet produce, to community markets where everything from knitted baby clothes and baked biscuits to fresh seedlings for the garden, bric-a-brac, and second-hand books help raise funds for local groups.

Bulbs are another popular item at winter markets, and, again, will make for some extra colour when spring comes around. While each market has its own character, some of the characteristics they share are breathtaking backdrops, a leisurely, welcoming atmosphere and plenty of opportunity to just browse and be inspired. Pop into the local tourist information centre for details of markets happening during your visit.

Commercial-type markets are also great value and very often have a greater array of stalls, including clothing and shoes to homewares. Farmers’ Markets are becoming increasingly popular as awareness of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle grows. The most delicious produce and fruit and veg can be had for very reasonable prices and the growers are always up for a chat and suggestions on how to cook their hand-raised produce.

2017

At some markets, buyers can get fresh, unprocessed meats, free of chemicals and preservatives.

Local farmers and growers also stand to earn top dollar for their produce without on-selling them through supermarkets.

Where The Wild Woods groW East Warburton redwood forest One of the best kept secrets in the Yarra Valley is the secluded and little-known East Warburton redwood forest that is located only a few kilometres out of Warburton. Planted in 1930 by the Board of Works, the Californian redwood trees have since grown to immense sizes and provide a magical and unique experience for visitors to the Yarra Valley. The mystical forest has 1450 trees that reach high into the sky. Various woven art by a local artists can be found throughout the forest and adds to the fairytale like atmosphere which the tucked away location exudes. East Warburton redwood forest is located a few minutes out of Warburton on Cement Creek Road. 12340499-EPJ13-17
