“We’ve seen a huge change, in the return of many species of animals to the area, and the breeding of animals has increased.” Responsible for reducing weeds that grow along Olinda Creek and in the reserve, MEEPA have been eradicating exotic weed species, removing rubbish and re-planting indigenous trees, which, without the help of Melbourne Water, would not have been possible. “(There's been) $138,000 from Mel-

The milestone marks a decade of both organisations working to revegetate the location to promote the growth of indigenous plants and to attract native species back to the location. Clare said both MEEPA and Melbourne Water were proud of the milestone and that various flora and fauna had returned to the reserve in recent years. “Ten years is pretty amazing and Melbourne Water thinks that, too,” she said.

Mount Evelyn Environment Protection and Progress Association (MEEPA) and Melbourne Water are celebrating their 10-year partnership to help restore the Mount Evelyn Recreation Reserve. In an incredible testament to their hard work in revegetating the reserve, yellow-bellied gliders - not seen in the area for over 60 years - were recently discovered again in the area. Clare Worsnop, president of MEE-

PA, said it was only within the last few months that the team at MEEPA had sighted the rare gliders. “We have very recently seen yellow-bellied gliders which haven’t been noted here since the 1950s,” she said. “These are the little joys we get which tell us that what we’re doing is really good and should be continued, and that everyone should all be looking at doing that work in other areas so the younger generations can enjoy these special animals, too.”

Sport a health catalyst

Forget the white sands and blue beaches of Bondi, instead Mt Dandenong’s rolling hills could play host to the next Bondi Vet television series. Dr Tom Cook, a resident vet at Gembrook Veterinary Clinic, is one of many veterinarians who have been fuelled by friends, clients or colleagues to enter into a nationwide search for the next Bondi Vet. Tom the vet has thrown his stethoscope into the ring to help bring the stories of pets in the Dandenongs to the small screen - of which he tells there are many. “We’ve had everything,” he said. “A saltwater crocodile that was from a petting zoo, a camel called Gobi, who needed surgery, and we’ve even had an elephant once from the circus, years ago.” Although having treated a range of exotic animals, Dr Tom also said that being in the Dandenong Ranges they regularly received wildlife cases. “We also get a lot of wildlife, kangaroos, wombats, sugar gliders, greater gliders, and all sorts of birds.” “You never know what’s coming around the corner,” he said. Dr Tom has been a vet for 15 years, and moved to Gembrook 10 years ago to be closer to family. From being a flying vet at Charters Towers in Northern Queensland to volunteering in Africa, Tom said he always wanted to be a vet and although a brief stint in chemistry while studying, he had never thought about being anything else. “I grew up always wanting to be a vet. “All creatures great and small, Harry Butler, David Attenborough, all these naturalists and conservationists were on the telly at the time, and I think that just reinforced that genre for me,” he said Out of the 400 vets who have been

Local sporting clubs are being urged to consider their role in creating equal and respectful environments for women and men. Eastern Health is helping to co-ordinate the ‘Be the Change’ forum on Wednesday 7 June, in partnership with Inspiro, Yarra Ranges Council, AFL Yarra Ranges, the Eastern Football League and Coles (Eastern Region). Collingwood AFLW player Emma Grant and former AFL player Luke Ablett will share their stories and thoughts on what clubs can do for gender equality. Eastern Health Executive director Clinical Operations, Matt Sharp, said clubs needed to create positive environments. “Respectful relationships and gender equality between men, women, boys and girls is the key to preventing violence against women,” he said. “No matter what our differences are, or our gender, it is important for each person to feel respected, valued, safe and appreciated.” The forum will be held at Karralyka Centre in Ringwood. Fame for Tom the vet

Veterinarian Tom Cook from Gembrook Veterinary Clinic is in the running to be the next Bondi Vet. 168711 Pictures: DEREK SCHLENNSTEDT However, he said, he was flattered by the response and nominations he had received. “I love the animals, I like working with the people, I like the team I work with here and they love their animals, and we’re all a bit crazy because of that.” “What are my chances? “Pretty slim, I haven’t got his chiselled

New-look culture More than 200 Yarra Ranges residents and visitors were welcomed to the new library, cultural space and maternal and child health services at the redeveloped Montrose Town Centre on Saturday 27 May. The $1.7 million redevelopment has connected the two existing buildings via a new foyer space and includes automatic doors at the front entrance, accessible toilet, family toilet and baby change facility, external access ramp to the stage in the hall and wider corridor leading to the main hall. In addition to the existing car parks, the new centre also features two new accessible carparks at the front of the building, as well as a limited drop-off zone. Artwork, including bells completed by artist Anton Hasell, is featured at the entrance to the building. Deputy mayor Len Cox said the stunning redevelopment included a new outdoor community meeting space, which residents could access at all times. “The Montrose Town Centre is now an indoor and outdoor space fully accessible with the added inclusion of disability parking at the site,” he said. “There is greater functionality within the cultural space from

Emerald school burglary Police are appealing for public assistance in relation to a burglary that occurred on Sunday 7 May 2017 at Emerald Secondary College. It is believed the offender had broken into the college and taken a chainsaw, gardening tools and a computer. The offender has then driven off in a green VT commodore. Anyone with information in relation to the male driver is urged to contact Detective Senior constable Sheree Osborne at Cardinia Criminal Investigation Unit on 5945 2585 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. A police operation in the Yarra Ranges has found more people driving under the influence of drugs than alcohol. Operation Lookout has been in place since March, and targets drivers driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Since March, Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol has stopped and breath tested 319 vehicles. To date of the 319 vehicles stopped, there have been 112 offences in total. Of the 319 cars stopped 50 had been drug tested and 14 were found to be driving under the influence of an oral fluid illicit drug. Sergeant Graeme Rust at Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol said the statsistics showed there was a large number of people driving under the influence of drugs than alcohol. “To date, we’ve given preliminary oral fluid tests to 50 drivers, with 14 of those facing driving with an oral fluid illicit drug charges." “It is showing that there are more drug drivers on the road, and we are trying our best to remove them to make the road safer,” he said.

Valium recalled By Kath Gannaway

Real-world commerce has the edge There is a lot of hype and mythology about the threat of internet sales to small business, says respected business analyst Damian Morgan. While internet sales continue to grow in Australia, the rate of growth has slowed, and it’s commodity products like books and TVs that best suit internet sales. Small businesses that offer a unique consumer experience with expert product knowledge, great customer service and after sales

make the most of their local presence. We need to sell a personal experience, not just a product. “The small businesses that don’t offer a niche experience are almost certain to fail now that competition does not only come from shops in the next street or town, but from every retailer on earth with a website.” Mr Morgan will present a series of 50 minute seminars on how small businesses in the Yarra Ranges can

thrive in tough economic times as part of the Local Business Leaders Seminars. He will host seminars in Marybrooke Manor in the hills on Tuesday 20 June, the RACV Club in Healesville on Wednesday 21 June. All sessions are free with various seminar times available. Bookings are essential. Contact Jackie Riley on 5957 3700.

A recall of Valium (diazepam) announced on 26 May, had Yarra Ranges pharmacies contacting customers over the weekend advising them to check their medications. The Therapeutic Goods Administration announced the recall on its website saying that Roche Products was recalling all batches of Valium 5mg tablets supplied in blister packs of 50 tablets due to the discovery of evidence of medicine tampering. The tablets contain diazepam, which is used to treat anxiety disorders, alcohol withdrawal symptoms and muscle spasms. The TGA said blister pack sheets containing other medicines had been substituted into some packs of Valium 5mg tablets. These medicines may include (but may not be limited to) BTC Paracetamol Codeine tablets, BTC Rosuvastatin 10mg tablets and Apotex-Pantoprazole 40mg tablets. If possible, consumers are advised to return Valium to the same pharmacy from which it was dispensed and to take along a script/repeat.

The Nobelius Heritage Park and Emerald Museum Committee of Management is seeking new volunteers to help run the Emerald Museum and contribute to the preservation of local history. New committee members will be appointed at the committee’s biennial general meeting on Tuesday 4 July. The museum is managed and operated by volunteers, and features more than 3000 local artefacts. Volunteers are vital to the community; in Cardinia Shire alone, the volunteer numbers are in the hundreds, and are spread across more than 560 organisations, each making

significant contributions to our diverse community. Many organisations, including the Emerald Museum, would struggle to achieve goals or deliver services without the help of volunteers. Cardinia Shire mayor Brett Owen said volunteers were extraordinary individuals. “It takes a special kind of person to volunteer time and energy to serve others, without expecting monetary reward,” Cr Owen said. “Our volunteers do what they do because they are passionate about helping their local community. “Council is proud to support

the valuable contribution of volunteers across all community sectors - from arts and culture groups to young people and children’s organisations; from sporting and recreation groups to education and training; and from aged care and disability providers to emergency services.” Nobelius Heritage Park and Emerald Museum’s Committee of Management is supported by Cardinia Shire Council. A group of Emerald Secondary College students are promoting equality and inclusiveness, as part of their participation in the competition, Future Problem Solving Australia. The organisation brings together more than 140 schools nationwide to try to solve the issues that the next generation believes are the world’s greatest. Future Problem Solving is an international educational program for students of all ages, focusing on the development of critical, creative and futuristic thinking skills. The program challenges students to apply their minds to some of the significant issues

facing the world of today and the future. Principal Jodie Doble said she was incredibly proud of the young group, comprising Year 8 and 9 students, who are working hard to launch a concept they’ve called P.R.I.D.E. Through this initiative, the group is trying to better the community by making others feel happy, healthy and safe. Group member Jessica Tilson, 14, said they wanted to promote an inclusive community. “Our version of P.R.I.D.E is not just about gender and gender identity ... we are promoting an inclusive community no

matter race, age, gender, ethnicity, disability or mental health issues,” she said. Fellow group member Daisy added, “We are creating a community for everyone, without judgement or stigma”. The students have drawn upon new research that suggests people suffering from mental health problems do not seek help due to stigma. They believe their campaign is one way to address this problem. The P.R.I.D.E team recently helped to spread the word through a parent and community information evening on Tuesday 16 May.

CFA embroiled in politics By Derek Schlennstedt The State Labor Government has been accused of ‘playing politics’ after it combined the firefighters’ presumptive rights compensation and the fire services legislation amendment into the same bill. Under the new legislation, Victorian firefighters would only get presumptive cancer compensation rights if the parliament agreed to the Andrews government’s controversial planned CFA split. Opposition Leader Matthew Guy warned there would be “no guarantee (the legislation) will pass the upper house,” and accused the government of “playing politics with firefighters’ health”. However, he said that if Labor had introduced a standalone presumptive cancer Bill it would pass the parliament this week. Premier Daniel Andrews defended tying the changes together and said that when the Coalition was in power, it had failed to introduce the compensation laws. “We don’t run our reform agenda based on what the opposition might vote for, or vote against. “They have been all over the place on these issues.” “The government drafted the Bill, and we’d expect all fair minded members of the Victorian Parliament will vote for that Bill,” Mr Andrews said. The compensation scheme will formally be open to firefighters who have developed cancers since June 2016. Following the State Government’s legislation announcements, the State Opposition, came under fire for running a robo-call campaign that claimed the planned CFA restructure would put Victorians at risk.

The fate of the CFA split and new presumptive cancer compensation legislation now lies with the upper house. 168903

The robo-calls were made to Labor electorates over a 24-hour period and the Country Fire Authority’s chief executive, Frances Diver, said the organisation was ‘flooded with complaints’ from people who had received the calls. “This is a highly irresponsible and unfounded claim, and not an authorised message from CFA,” Ms Diver said.

“CFA is deeply concerned that these calls may erode confidence in public safety and unfairly cause alarm across the community.” The automated calls introduced listeners to Glen, a CFA volunteer, who directed listeners to sign a petition to save the CFA. “Hi, I’m Glen a CFA volunteer, the

CFA is under threat.” “No one was consulted about this, not the CFA volunteers, not the CFA leadership and not the community.” Opposition emergency services spokesman Brad Battin defended the calls and said the Coalition would “continue to ramp up its campaign to

protect the CFA that helps keep Victorians safe.” Earlier this month on 19 May the State Government announced that paid firefighters from the CFA and Metropolitan Fire Brigade would move to the newly created Fire Rescue Victoria, leaving the CFA to continue as a volunteer only organisation.

Dream of a time Opinion by Peter Douglas I take great pleasure in reading letters submitted to the ‘Mail’, because, to some degree, the content is an indicator of overall community sentiment on issues important to the Yarra Ranges. One of this newspaper’s more regular letter-writers is Stanley R. Burgess, who has penned his opinion on everything from Lady Gaga, to local and national affairs. I was most impressed with Mr Burgess’s most recent letter, which featured recently in the ‘Mountain Views Mail’ and ‘Upper Yarra Mail’, praising the contribution of Indigenous footballers for his beloved NRL. In the letter, he cited some incredible statistics, which he wrote were highlighted during the NRL’s recent Indigenous round. These included that only three per cent of Australia’s population are Indigenous, though 16 per cent of NRL players - and 20 per cent of State of Origin

players - are Indigenous. Not to mention many of the greats, such as Cowboys star Jonathon ‘JT’ Thurston, are Indigenous. In the AFL, too, many of the greats have been Indigenous: Andrew McLeod, the Krakouer brothers, Michael Long, Adam Goodes ... the list is almost endless. In fact, as a Collingwood supporter, my favourite player to watch over the past decade has been Leon Davis, despite his tendency to polarise supporters. But it was off the field, too, where he was most impressive, despite his reluctance for the spotlight. He was, and still is, incredibly humble, as well as dedicated to his Indigenous community in his home town near Perth. On Saturday 27 May, the Healesville and Woori Yallock football clubs played off for the first Dreamtime in the Valley match, which will pay tribute to local Indigenous contributions -

on and off the field. What an incredible initiative and one we should all support. The AFL Yarra Ranges league, and all those involved in putting together this day, should be duly congratulated for their efforts. Let’s hope this marquee match continues for many years. Because while we often highlight the feats of the great players, such as those listed above, we shouldn’t forget their predecessors and the challenges they faced; trailblazers such as Carlton great Syd Jackson, and Nicky Winmar and Sir Doug Nicholls. These players had to work many times harder than non-Indigenous players to earn the respect they clearly deserved. Matches such as the ‘Dreamtime in the Valley’, and the AFL’s and NRL’s Indigenous rounds, serve as a great tribute to acknowledge how far we’ve come, and how far we’ve yet to go.

want my tax money given to a mining billionaire. We hope our elected representatives will use commonsense and oppose this handout. Peter Cook, Clematis.

Currently, during a major fire, the surge capacity for volunteers is largely boosted by volunteers coming from outer-urban CFA stations, and these stations will no longer be part of the CFA. In recent years, there have been eight reviews conducted into fire services, not one of which recommended breaking up the CFA. It is distressing that Daniel Andrews failed to consult with CFA brigades before making this decision. Indeed, the only consultation he did was with the secretary of the United Firefighters Union, his buddy Peter Marshall. Christine Fyffe, Member for Evelyn.

Letters Old king coal I would like to thank the motorists and truck and bus drivers that tooted their horns in support of our protests outside local MPs’ offices on May 17, 18 and 19. Their waves and the encouraging nature of their toots showed us that yes, like us, many in the community are concerned about the proposed Adani coal mine. Our message to MPs Michael Sukar, Tony Smith, Jason Wood and Alan Tudge was that the proposed $1 billion in public funds should not be used to assist this climate, Great Barrier Reef and tourism damaging project. Like many other Australians, I do not

Premier burns CFA Last Friday 19 May, Daniel Andrews ripped apart 160 years of proud history of volunteer fire-fighting in Victoria by his decision to tear apart the CFA. His decision will be detrimental to volunteers and will result in a big decline in volunteer numbers, reducing the capacity of the CFA to fight major fires during the fire season.

Old world steam train charm Australia’s favourite steam train is full steam ahead with its newest dining experience ‘Steam and Cuisine After Dark’. ‘Steam and Cuisine After Dark’ turns out the lights on the popular luncheon services, adding a little spice to the old world flare. Passengers arriving for the unique dining experience will be instantly transported to an era when ‘First Class’ really meant something special. Both the Belgrave Station and First Class dining carriages have been meticulously restored to glow in old world charm and detail. The First Class dining carriages bound for Lakeside Station boasts live music, white tablecloths and grand finishes, and create the ambience expected from the lavish early 1900s. Included in the fare is a three-course preordered dinner, served throughout the three-hour journey. An assortment of locally made wines and boutique beers are available to complement your selection. “It was a real thrill to add the Steam and Cuisine After Dark product to our range of evening dining experiences,” Puffing Billy Marketing manager, Emma Hutchinson, said. “It is a totally different experience with the lights of the train and the magic of the evening sky providing a new way of enjoying the beautiful Dandenong Ranges. “Rolling through the Dandenong Ranges, fortunate passengers will experience the night lights on the train, interrupted by puffs of steam, open a window into the nocturnal world of the region’s temperate rainforest. “With live music, delicious food, local wines and a spectacular setting, this new dinner service will create an unforgettable night out.” ‘Steam and Cuisine After Dark’ departs Belgrave Station on selected Friday and Saturday evenings and costs $99 per passenger (excluding drinks). Alistair Knox Designed Family Home!

Unbeatable location, plenty of space

Alistair Knox was a visionary and designed many quality homes that have stood the test of time and this property is no exception. Situated in a quiet and leafy area of Kilsyth, this family home with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, is a piece of history that deserves your inspection. Alistair’s design principles of working in harmony with the environment and using available resources to construct homes are ever apparent. As you enter the property timber posts were recycled from an old rail bridge in Warburton and frame the entrance to the home, the slate looring in the kitchen was salvaged from an old whaling ship whilst the timbers that form part of the staircase to the second level were reclaimed from the Tivoli Theatre. The main living features stunning double glazed Clerestory windows that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also provide plenty of natural light. The property boasts a galley style kitchen with dishwasher, electric oven, steam oven and gas cooker ensuring the chefs of the family are accounted for whilst the nearby second living area ensures there are plenty of spaces for all family members to unwind.

Cailie’s eye for colour By Derek Schlennstedt Cailie Coney is a prolific painter. At every opportunity the 31-yearold will use her pastels, paintbrushes and gel pens to create vibrant and colourful images. Every Monday she travels from Warburton to Monbulk to attend her art classes at Monbulk Open Door Community Church, and despite being born with Down Syndrome, Cailie has shown her ability as firstrate artist. Since primary school Cailie has been interested in all forms of the arts, including music and dance, but it was art that Cailie truly excelled in. For her first exhibition, she will be presenting her work on the walls at Monbulk Community Church. Teacher Yvonne Picot has taught Cailie for six years and said she was an inspiration to all the students who attended her class ‘Explore Art’ at the Monbulk Community Church. “I take the group Explore Art and I encourage my students to find their own abilities.” “Some work with pastel and some with acrylic paint, other works with water-based pencils or watercolours. "Cailie has worked with all of them but the latest she is into is the gel pen, she has an incredibly good eye for colour,” Yvonne said. “She’s very committed, and she’s an inspiration for our group as she

always does her homework and is always drawing or painting.” As a young adult, Cailie was interviewed and accepted into the Arts Project Australia, which she attended for two years. The Arts Project Australia supports artists with an intellectual disability, promoting their work and advocating for their inclusion in contemporary art practice and dialogue. This exhibition will be Cailie’s

Fine effort on film Their Finest (M) Starring: Gemma Arterton, Sam Claflin, Bill Nighy

first and Yvonne invites everyone to visit Monbulk Community Church and see the artworks which include bright tones and colours. Cailie’s mum, Margaret, an artist herself, said that Cailie had improved since joining the art classes in Monbulk and that she had created her own style which included vivid and bright colours. “Since joining the exploring art group, Cailie has found her own style,” Margaret said.

“She’s currently doing a roadscape with tall buildings and a bright focal point of the sun down at the end of the road.” “I always loved art too, but I was quite used to old-fashioned artistry and didn’t use much colour - Cailie however taught me the importance of using bright colours.” The exhibition opens on Monday 29 May and can be viewed every Monday between 2-4pm.

Directed by Danish filmmaker Lone Scherfig, Their Finest is a poignant, charming film about the role entertainment plays in wartime optimism. In 1940 London, screenwriter Catrin Cole (Gemma Arterton) is enlisted by the British Ministry of Information to help write a morale-boosting film about the evacuation of Dunkirk. Even with the Blitz underway, war is more of a thematic backdrop to the events of Their Finest. Even so, the film does a remarkable job of drawing parallels between its characters’ personal struggles and the broader tragedy of World War II. The engrossing narrative also derives strong tension and even tenderly-observed humour from the hard job of spinning hope out of horror. Arterton delivers an Oscar-worthy performance of graceful confidence and dignity as Catrin, portraying a diligent woman who is passionate about storytelling and who craftily works around the chauvinistic attitudes of the time. Sam Claflin plays Tom Buckley, Catrin’s adversarial writing partner who gradually comes out of his prickly shell, and Bill Nighy is endearing as Hilliard, a veteran actor who must set aside his inflated pride. Scherfig also integrates some clever, subtle commentary on modern issues in film, such as gender representation and studios exerting pressure upon writers and directors. Much like the film Catrin is writing, Their Finest is a compelling, funny and insightful movie about perseverance through art and the uplifting effect of film.

Wandin outshines Emerald By Cameron Hutchison Round 6 was the Indigenous Round and it was celebrated with a night game between Woori Yallock and Healesville, which saw Healesville come away with the four points. Other winners were Wandin, Olinda Ferny Creek, Mount Evelyn, Upwey Tecoma, Belgrave, Kinglake, Seville and Yea. The Under 18s had some surprise winners and none more than Emerald over Wandin. Monbulk, Mount Evelyn, UpweyTecoma and Healesville also defeated their opponents. A Grade netball also had some surprises and big margins and the winners were Wandin, Olinda-Ferny Creek, Warburton-Millgrove, UpweyTecoma, Woori Yallock, Belgrave, Kinglake, Powelltown and Yea. The game of the day next week in Division 1 will be Olinda Ferny Creek versus Mount Evelyn, while in Division 2 Kinglake play host to Seville and Powelltown take on Belgrave. Division 1 Seniors Football Wandin 21.29 (155) d Emerald 6.7 (43) It was all one-way traffic for Emerald on Saturday. They had no answers for the onslaught that Wandin put on display, and Wandin are now one-game clear on the top of the ladder. A seven-goal opening quarter to a solitary behind set up the rest of the day. Wandin kicked another 5.6 in the second quarter, while Emerald had a total of 2.3 on the board and the half time margin was 74 points. Emerald only managed to add another 4.4 in the second half while Wandin added 9.12 to come away with a half century of scoring shoots and a very big win. Wandin Best: M. Polkinghorne (5 goals), B. Harvey, R. Ross (2 goals), T. Merlino (2 goals), J. Myers (1 goal), B. Chapman (2 goals) Emerald Best: M. Dompietro, L. Sheppard, J. Pedder (3 goals), M. Thomas, S. Paull, B. Moloney (1 goal) Olinda Ferny Creek 9.19 (73) d Monbulk 6.5 (41) Olinda Ferny Creek were tested early at Monbulk. Monbulk got the early lead by five points at quarter time, but it all ended there as Monbulk were unable to score another major until the last quarter, and by that time Olinda had added 6.13 and a lead of 40 points by three-quarter time. The wind played a factor in the scoreline and the result could have been greater if Olinda was accurate in front of goal. It was not a convincing win by Olinda but they do sit comfortably in second position and should maintain that position after they play Mount Evelyn next week. Olinda Ferny Creek Best: M. Hottes, B. Shaw, G. Stevens, E. Greenall, J. Charge (4 goals), R. CottamStarkey Monbulk Best: S. Van Seters, J. Major, C. Tibb, S. Williams (1 goal), J. Martin, J. Schille Mount Evelyn 22.14 (146) d Warburton Millgrove 12.5 (77) Mount Evelyn share third spot on the ladder after a big win over Warburton but sit sixth on percentage. Warburton are still hunting for their first win, but it looks like they may have to wait for that chance in Round 9. Warburton gave it a fair crack in the first quarter, kicking four goals to eight, but the

Arm-in-arm, the Woori Yallock players help to celebrate the Indigenous Picture: BETHANY HUTCHISON round. 168910 second quarter finished the game with Mount Evelyn kicking five goals to nil and the margin at half-time was 56 points. Warburton bounced back in the third, kicking 5.4 but, Mount Evelyn also kicked 7.2 and it was game over at that stage. Mount Evelyn Best: K. Jones (8 goals), J. Griffiths, D. Kift, M. Gibbons, B. Forbes (1 goal), J. Fellows Warburton-Millgrove Best: J. Walker (1 goal), A. White (5 goals), T. McKail (1 goal), L. Weir, P. Hay, S. Andueza Upwey-Tecoma 26.17 (173) d Gembrook-Cockatoo 8.8 (56) Upwey Tecoma also share third spot, but sit fifth on percentage after a big won over Gembrook on Saturday. Upwey had all bases covered and Dan Waters was on fire up forward, booting a massive 11 goals to half-time and 13 for the day. It was a bit of a goal feast in the first quarter, with 12 goals being kicked, but Upwey took a lead of 33 points into the second quarter. A ninegoal to nil second quarter was the final straw for Gembrook and they were never going to break the momentum that Upwey had created. Upwey took the foot off the pedal in the second half, only kicking nine goals. Gembrook to their credit kicked five, but the margin was just too great. Upwey-Tecoma Best: D. Waters (13 goals), H. Stanley (1 goal), J. Hackett (4 goals), C. Hayes (5 goals), B. Watson, L. Beacom Gembrook-Cockatoo Best: R. Causer (1 goal), M. Templeton (2 goals), L. Henzen, C. Bastow, D. Leversha, R. Wilson (1 goal) Healesville 16.11 (107) d Woori Yallock 12.12 (84) Woori Yallock hosted the first Valley Dreamtime game on Saturday night in front of a finals-like crowd, but they came up against a Healesville side that needed to get its season back on track and now sit third, with three other clubs nearing the half way point of the season. Woori Yallock took a slim lead of 11points at quarter time. Healesville kicked back in the second, with 5.5 to 2.1 and had a lead of 11 points at the main break. Woori Yallock were not done and they jumped Healesville in the third and arrested the lead back by kicking 7.5 to 3.1. The weather played a part in this game and the wind was all important in the last. Healesville got back to their premiership form,

kicking 7.1 to 3 behinds in the last to be the Inaugural winners of the ‘Valley Dreamtime’ clash. Healesville Best: N. Mende (Dreamtime Medal) (1 goal), S. Gordon (6 goals), A. Davies (1 goal), S. Donkin, A. Fraraccio, L. Daly (1 goal) Woori Yallock Best: C. Smedley, K. Thompson, M. Baxter (4 goals), B. Monkhorst (3 goals), S. Ismail (1 goal), R. Allen Division 2 Seniors Football Belgrave 16.14 (110) d Yarra Glen 13.12 (90) Belgrave played host to Yarra Glen on Saturday in the closest game of the Round and came away winners and have evened up the ladder with both clubs now sharing top spot with Seville. Yarra Glen never led at any change and found themselves six points down at quarter time. The conditions were a bit blustery but not enough to have an enormous effect on kicking. Yarra Glen played the first part of quarter number two better; however, Belgrave were able to answer and both sides ended with 4.5 in the quarter. Belgrave are very hard to play on their home turf and play behind the ball very well which showed in the third, with them booting 5.3 to 3.2. A 19-point deficit was going to be hard to peg back. Yarra Glen fought back in the last and even levelled the scores in the last but Belgrave managed to find their second wind and piled on three late goals to come away with a well-deserved win. Belgrave Best: P. Gough (1 goal), M. Brown (2 goals), B. Raaymakers, W. Carlyle, D. Bilston, L. Foreman (4 goals) Yarra Glen Best: B. Ashton, M. McNeill (1 goal), A. Smith (2 goals), L. Telford (1 goal), G. Filsell, K. Hudson (2 goals) Kinglake 13.13 (91) d Alexandra 7.11 (53) Kinglake got themselves back on the winning list on Saturday after a good win over an Alexandra side that was playing for apposition at the top of the ladder. Kinglake took the lead at the first break by kicking four goals to two and were never headed after that. Alexandra could only manage 1.1 in the second, Kinglake kicked 2.5 but the conditions did play a factor in the scoring ability of both sides. The third quarter was even and had no real bearing on the result but the last quarter

was all Kinglake, with five goals to two and this keeps Kinglake in the hunt for finals. Kinglake Best: B. Wilkinson (4 goals), B. White, B. Hamer, J. Mende, J. Butterworth, M. Fitzclarence (1 goal) Alexandra Best: L. Ragg, C. Heaslip, B. Cooper (1 goal), S. Steiner (2 goals), M. Coombs, R. Norris Seville 23.14 (152) d Powelltown 9.15 (69) Seville have certainly stamped themselves into second position with a big win over the more fancied Powelltown on Saturday. This win has now pushed Powelltown to fifth spot on the ladder and they will be a bit shell shocked as to what happened. Seville kicked an impressive 9.6 to zip in the first and Powelltown were left reeling and unsure what had just actually happened. Powelltown outscored Seville in the second, kicking 4.5 to 2.2 but the damage was already done. Powelltown could not match it with Seville at all and Seville kicked another 12 goals to five in the second half to come away with a big 83-point win. Seville Best: B. Penwill (1 goal), J. Nolan (3 goals), M. Cecere (3 goals), J. Neal (3 goals), L. O’Keefe, D. Broadway (3 goals) Powelltown Best: L. Walker, M. McArthur, T. Hallmark, W. Dore, M. Lord (1 goal), R. McCrimmon (2 goals) Yea 14.7 (91) d Thornton Eildon 9.9 (63) Yea have their second win for the season at the expense of Thornton Eildon. The first quarter was tight with only three goals being kicked. Yea had a slim three-point lead at quarter time. Both teams kicked 4.1 in the second with no one giving anything away and the game was certainly in the balance. The third quarter was very much the same with Yea kicking four straight to Thornton’s 4.3 and the scores were all tied up. It was going to be survival of the fittest and that ended up being Yea who kicked away with 4.5 to just one behind in the last, and Thornton will be disappointed that they let this one get away. Yea Best: P. Rattray (7 goals), D. O’Dwyer, A. McSpeerin, H. Jarvie (1 goal), D. Freeman, C. Evans Thornton-Eildon Best: B. Wratten, J. Strachan, K. Purtie, B. Musgrove, B. Azzopardi, Z. A scenic run By Jamie Strudley An excellent cross country course around the picturesque grounds of Cruden Farm was what greeted Yarra Ranges Athletes for Round 3 of the XCR17 season. Rolling hills and one very muddy bog made for a fun day of athletics. Georgia Laven once again showed her class with a powerful run to win the Women Under 16 event 6km, outrunning the under 16 and under 18 women. Georgia’s sister, Maddie, was the club’s other podium finisher, with a well-fought third place in the Womens Under 14 4km race. Unofficial results are: U14 Boys 4km Zac Clarke 9th 15.33, Angus Norman 22nd 16.20, James Love 24th 17.01; U14 Girls 4km Maddie Laven 3rd 15.02, Indigo Linde 6th 15.43, Mia Strudley 14th 17.23; U18 Men 8km Harry Norman 15th 29.01, James Laven 18th 29.27, Jayden Eagleton 36th 36.31; U20 Men 6km Mitch Mullens 26th 23.39; U20 Women 8km Amy Veenendaal 14th 39.52; U16 Women 6km Georgia Laven 1st 21.44 Open Men 16km Michael Clarke 157th 1.03.50, Graham Coutts 178th 1.05.24, James Anderson 189th 1.05.56, Stephen Blair 194th 1.06.04, Bryan Ackerly 206th 1.06.56, Dave Laven 300th 1.15.55, Martin

Juniors battle under hail With Sunday being cold and wet, Monbulk Junior Football Club players took to the field in what was the first true winter conditions for the season. Many experienced hail and all were glad of a warm shower on their return home. Under 9s Another little step forward today with the team learning to pick up and play on an opponent. It is terrific to see this group of kids growing and learning each week. Awards: Cooper, Arley, Miles, Ryder, Gilbert Under 10s Maroon The guys had their usual slow start and Olinda bounded out well. The last three quarters were very competitive, and the side put into place things the players had been working on at training. The team had plenty of the ball and locked the ball down forward for long periods of the game. Awards: R. English, J. Aldrigde, A. Dennis- Moore, I. Mullinder Under 10s Gold Every week they just keep getting better; the improvement has been amazing and the results are amazing. As one of the kids said during the game, “we were legends”. Awards: M. Pithouse, A. Hylton - Stewart, X. Hourigan, W. Hammond, H. Dickson Under 11s Another great team effort today. The team was challenged in the third term with scores level; however, Monbulk came

The Under 16s team's best on ground, Lochlan Beecroft. 168896 out in the last with purpose and heart to take the game out. Awards: F. Thomas - Tatti, J.Koelewyn, J. Defina, N. Wain, T. Kostich, Angerson Under 12s Girls Great game on a wet ground today. The transfer out of the backline was terrific. The focus on shepherding during the week paid off, especially in the second half. Great improvement, yet again. Awards: J. Farmer, N. Seamer, H. Hooper, G. Sylvester, M. Mc Dermott Under 12s Boys Certainly, a game in two halves. Slow out of the blocks at the ball and player. To the team’s absolute credit, they turn it up in the second half to make it a terrific contest. Awards: L. Smith, M. Dickinson, T. Rickard, A. Bohun, R. Ross Under 14s Monbulk Gold Some poor decisions cost the team, with small legs on a

big ground. To the boy’s credit, after the heavens opened they rallied and played a great last quarter. The side hopes to keep working on the basics to make it a good team. Awards: B. Grimes, R. Finlay, C. Barge, A. Green, J. Spencer, T. Koelewyn Under 14s Monbulk Maroon A hard one to watch today. The side needs to have a better attitude towards one another and its effort into having a crack. The side looks forward from here. Awards: J. Niclasen, T. Ford, L. Bright, C. Passingham Under 16s We were looking forward to this challenge. Both teams were working hard and both teams used the ball well in slippery conditions. The boys fought hard until the final siren.
