Cop shop shotgun Number plates, several bank cards, BHP and Crown Casino identity cards, stolen laptops and hard-drives as well as deal bags of ‘ice’ were also seized. On another raid last year, police seized five lost or stolen bank cards, two identity cards, GHB, suspected crystal-meth, pharmaceutical tablets and knuckle-dusters. Hagen was also charged with three petrol drive-offs in a stolen car this year and the attempted theft of a Nissan Patrol from a Clyde North home’s driveway in September. During the latter, Hagen threatened residents with a crowbar to stop them giving chase. In December 2015, ice pipes as well as illicit drugs such as ecstasy, meth, and 1,4-butanediol were seized from his home after he was hospitalised with breathing difficulties. Hagen’s lawyer said the accused’s criminal history had only begun in 2016, despite being a “functioning” drug user for the past 11 years. Hagen was unable to apply for Dandenong Drug Court due to a full waiting list, the lawyer said. Magistrate Pauline Spencer took into account Hagen’s “good” rehabilitation prospects and that his offending was fuelled by drug addiction. But there was a need to deter firearms out in the community, particularly mixed with drug use, she said. “And particularly when you’re in a vehicle in the judicial precinct and carrying a loaded shotgun in our community. “If you choose to carry a weapon, to carry a gun, you’ll go to jail. It needs to be a clear message.” Ms Spencer said the “significant amount” of proceeds-of-crime also needed to be punished with additional jail time. Hagen was jailed for two years including a non-parole period of up to 12 months. He was also disqualified from driving for six months and fined $2000.

Guns out for comics fest Deza-Con III was back with a vengeance this year, with over 400 people attending the third incarnation of the region’s only pop culture event. Cosplayers, gaming enthusiasts and comic book lovers all turned out to the Narre Community Learning Centre on Saturday 27 May to share their love of all things pop culture. Event organiser and father of Deza-Con, Roy Condeza, appears here flanked by Craig Wood in Halo armour and Walter Bolitho in Call of Duty 4 armour. There were events within events at the convention, with the cosplay competition bringing out the best costume adaptions and re-creations in the area. There were also local comic book artists set up in the newly introduced Artists’ Alley, as well as a Nintendo Game Zone set up by Nintensive Gaming. The proceeds from the refreshment crew were donated to local humanitarian group Transit and the proceeds from the Nintensive Games Zine donated to the Peter Mac Cancer Research Centre. Vendors, stall holders, artists and cosplayers interested in participating in the next Deza-Con and contact Roy Condeza on 0402 019 201 or rcondeza@hotmail.com. Picture: ROB CAREW

A Cranbourne man parked outside Dandenong police station with a loaded, doublebarrelled sawn-off shotgun, a balaclava, a hockey mask and the drug ‘ice’ had no “malicious intention”, a court was told. Joshua Hagen, 32, was intercepted by police in a car with two females in Langhorne Street on 2 March, while his mate sat inside the station’s cells. Hours earlier, police had launched a morning raid of Hagen’s bedroom in his absence. On his arrest, Hagen told police that he was merely dropping off clothes to his locked-up mate. He didn’t want to leave the gun - loaded and with five spare cartridges on hand - lying around his father’s home, he told them. Appearing by video link, Hagen pleaded guilty to a suite of charges at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 29 May. The most serious was being a prohibited person with a loaded firearm in public, and possessing a firearm without a serial number. “All of the (seized) items were believed to be for criminal intent,” prosecutor Senior Constable Ben Hodson told the court. “He had a loaded double-barrelled shotgun in front of Dandenong police station and was also in possession of methamphetamine. “It doesn’t go well together.” Hagen’s lawyer admitted the “suspicious” circumstances but said the accused had merely given a lift to his mate’s pregnant partner to visit him in the cells. “He was going to wait and drive her back home. “He has instructed very clearly that there was no malicious intention.” During the earlier house raid, police found an array of ammunition including loaded magazines suitable for an AK-47 assault rifle, as well as camouflage top and pants and a security firm’s shirt. There was also a bevy of suspected stolen goods, such as 51 sets of car keys, a box of watches and watch faces, and other jewellery.

Probe call over mayor By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey mayor Sam Aziz may be investigated by the State Government for an alleged breach of the councillor codeof-conduct in threatening to sue Berwick Springs roundabout opponents. The investigation’s proponent Judith Couacaud Graley told State Parliament on 25 May that Cr Aziz should be open to opposing views, not threatening and silencing concerned locals. “They are concerned about having to fork out hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal costs just because they dared to speak up for their community. “After seriously overreaching indeed, it could be that the mayor is taking himself just a little bit too seriously. “One could question whether the mayor is using his position of power, or maybe even council resources, to at-
Sam Aziz says he has “absolutely not” breached the councillor codeof-conduct. tack the very constituents he should be representing.” Ms Graley said Cr Aziz might have been in breach of code-of-conduct
provisions that councillors treated “all persons with respect” and had “due regard to the opinions, beliefs, rights and responsibilities of ... other persons”. The code also requires councillors to try to “ensure that public resources are used prudently and solely in the public interest.” Ms Graley called on Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins to investigate the matter. “The minister has said that she will follow up on my very serious request because mayors and councillors have a duty to treat their constituents with respect,“ Ms Graley later told Star News. Recently, Cr Aziz sent legal letters to several people who posted on a Facebook page against a proposed roundabout across a bluestone-wall estate gateway at Greaves Road and Berwick Springs Promenade, Narre Warren.
The letters demanded an apology “in wording to be agreed”, and the payment of Cr Aziz’s “reasonable” legal costs as well as “adequate” damages compensation. Cr Aziz, who was unwilling to comment on the lawsuits themselves, said his actions were lawful and “absolutely not” in breach of the code. He returned fire against Ms Graley for a “political stunt” attempting to deflect from her dipping “internal polling”. It drew comparisons with a similar “stunt” in 2016 when the State Government-installed Monitor gave a “glowing report” of Casey’s governance, he said. “Judith would be better off spending time on the infrastructure needs of the City of Casey, which her government has failed miserably in delivering upon.”
Cr Aziz said his door was “always open” for productive talks on infrastructure, crime reduction and decongesting roads. Cr Aziz stated it was “definitely not on my radar” to stand for the next state and federal elections. “I’ve got a job to do for the next three years to deliver for the people of Springfield Ward.” Berwick Springs spokesman Michael Ball said he didn’t hold a “personal grudge” against Cr Aziz during the protests. “I believe residents and myself have a right to hold all decision makers accountable for poor performance and handling of this issue. “I expect as a local council they acknowledge the concerns of local residents and treat residents respectfully even if residents hold opposing views.”

The operator tells him to make sure everyone was out of the house, it was not worth risking his life. Fire brigade members soon arrived and immediately put out the flames, which had already destroyed the bedroom. Gabrielle’s aunt Shareen Mollenhauer said if not for Gabrielle’s quick action, the fire could well have spread through the house. She described her niece as a con-
fident, articulate and well-organised student at St Catherine’s Catholic Primary School. “We’re very proud of what she did,” Ms Mollenhauer said. “She puts all of the things she learns into practice.” Meanwhile, Emily Ray had also managed to put out an oven fire even while her house filled with smoke. She rang triple-zero explaining what had happened and ensured her two pets were safe.

Showing cool heads in a crisis, two girls from Narre Warren and Berwick have emerged as heroes during dramatic fires at their homes. Emily Ray, 15, and Gabrielle Singh, 9, received Junior Triple Zero Hero awards on 30 May for their decisive responses, including quickly calling for help on triplezero. As she did homework, Gabrielle showed remarkable composure when smoke alarms blared in her Berwick house one Monday afternoon. Gabrielle’s father Joseph Singh and uncle Ross Mollenhauer rushed to a bed that had combusted into fierce flames, perhaps due to an errant match used to light candles. As the adults tried to extinguish the blaze with woollen blankets, Gabrielle was straight on the phone to triple-zero. “There’s a fire in the room,” she confidently told the operator - who immediately summoned two fire trucks. After being told family members were in the house, the operator said: “Can you tell everyone to go outside?” “My dad and my uncle are trying to stop the fire,” Gabrielle says. Under the operator’s instructions, Gabrielle escorted her sixyear-old sister Tewila to safety. Gabrielle is heard during the call, shouting: “We have to go outside. You have to come quickly!” During the call, the operator speaks to a “grown-up kid” who had been riding past on his bike, a concerned adult neighbour and then

School to boost skills By Victoria Stone-Meadows and Bonny Burrows The proposed Casey Tech School has taken a step forward with Premier Daniel Andrews visiting the site of the new school at Chisholm Institute at Berwick on Wednesday 31 May. The premier viewed the approved architectural plans for the school as well as met with plumbing and electrical apprentices from the Trade Training Centre. The premier also surveyed the site of the new $10 million Berwick Health Centre which will feature nurse training and simulation laboratories, learning areas and staff accommodation. The new Casey Tech School forms part of the State Government’s $128 million tech school initiative that will see the establishment of 10 such schools around the state. The tech schools - that focus on training and skills sharing between secondary colleges, universities and TAFEs - will allow students to gain valuable knowledge in a particular skill. During his visit to the Berwick Chisholm campus, Premier Andrews said the new tech school represented a strong investment in the future workforce of Victoria. “We were elected to put people first, and these investments at Berwick Chisholm do exactly that - giving the next generation the skills they need for the job they want,” he said. “We’re investing in better TAFE, skills and training in Melbourne’s south east and across Victoria.” Tech schools used to be popular in Victoria before the Cain Labor Government of the 1980s closed
them in favour of establishing more state secondary colleges. Once established, the Casey Tech School will allow students from 28 secondary schools in the region to gain access to vocational training and further education pathways. The Casey Tech School plans to focus on biomedical technology, health and medical tech, and high tech manufacturing, production and processing technologies. A director for the school will be appointed in the coming months with construction of the new building commencing shortly afterwards. Chisholm Acting CEO Grant Radford said he was proud to have the Casey Tech School opening at their Berwick campus. “The tech school is a significant project, and we’re partnering with all of the schools in the region,” he said. “It’s the largest in the state, and obviously will have huge benefits in working with the schools to enhance the programs that are already running in the schools.” The Casey Tech School is expected to have a capacity of about 200 students, but Chisholm is open to tailoring programs in partnership with local secondary schools. “Obviously, not every single student is probably going to come through the building,” Mr Radford said. “However, we’re working on a program that best suit the schools to make sure those students who come through are getting a practical component to their studies.” The new school is expected to be completed and operational by the middle of 2018.

Bailed after a spate of thefts

By Cam Lucadou-Wells
In solemn memory By Jenna Hutton-Murdoch Ex-Alkira Sc Student Students at Alkira Secondary College came together at their annual Holocaust Remembrance Ceremony on Friday 26 May. The ceremony is held to honour the memory of the six million Jews and other victims who perished during the Holocaust. As explained by Josh Frydenberg in 2012, preserving the memories of all those who
perished grows more important and urgent as survivors are passing and the memories they imparted fading.” The students and teachers at Alkira Secondary College are determined to ensure that the great loss of these men, women and children is never forgotten. Year 10 student Kate vowed “not to let our people to be murdered again” and promised to fight for the rights of the human race. Guest speakers included Les Kausman from Courage to Care
and survivor Professor Henry Ekert as well as City of Casey's Councillor Rosalie Crestani and David Southwick MP. Students and teachers from both Alkira Secondary College and Mount Scopus Memorial College were reminded of the effects of prejudice, and encouraged to heed this warning from the past. “Every single one of those six million people had the right to live, but they never got the opportunity to do so,” Year 10 student Alysha said.
A man who has partially denied being part of a spate of thefts and dishonesty across Melbourne’s South-East has been granted bail to resume living among co-offenders in a Endeavour Hills boarding house. Joshua Ring, 29, and two co-residents at the boarding house allegedly stole a Nissan Tiida from a Doveton resident’s driveway on 21 March, a court heard. Police informant Senior Constable Heath Cay told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 22 May that the stolen vehicle was subsequently fitted with two sets of stolen number plates. It was allegedly involved in petrol drive-offs and ‘paywave’ purchases with stolen credit-cards at servos, supermarkets and McDonald’s outlets in March and April. Ring and co-offenders had been identified on CCTV footage at the stores; Ring’s fingerprints were dusted on the crashed Tiida’s passenger doorframe after it was abandoned near his home on 13 April, Sen Const Cay said. Ring had also made partial admissions to being in the car and using some of the credit cards, the informant told the court. The alleged offending continued in a Suzuki Swift with one stolen number-plate on 20 and 24 April. Again, illegal pay-wave purchases were made
from credit-cards stolen from cars at homes in Doncaster East and Beaconsfield. A short time after the latter burglary, the cards were used in a $1000-plus “spending spree” of 15 illegal transactions at various stores. At the time of all of the offending, Ring was on bail for evading police while driving unlicensed in Bendigo and breaching an intervention order in Geelong. Sen Const Cay said Ring - who had also told police he couldn’t drive - had attributed his offending to his ‘ice’ habit. Police had opposed Ring’s bail due to an “unacceptable risk of re-offending”, partly fuelled by his boarding-house co-offenders. However a Corrections Victoria report recommended Ring’s release to the same boarding house on the CISP ‘credit bail’ program. Ring would resume contact with drug treatment, outreach, mental health and other services under the program, his lawyer told the court. The accused, who had spent 12 days in remand, was still recovering from the trauma of being seriously assaulted in custody in 2014, the lawyer said. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said he was concerned about Ring spending further time in remand given that trauma, Ring’s Aboriginality, his one prior conviction and the unlikelihood of serving a jail term. “But the question is his ac-
commodation situation. “It doesn’t seem to be working well for him,” Mr Vandersteen said. He noted the offending coincided with Ring moving to the boarding house two months ago, which was “around the corner” from another notorious address. “He gets put in the boarding house with all the same problems and what do you think is going to happen then?” The likely alternative was Ring being put up at a pub which was “not ideal either”, Mr Vandersteen said. Mr Vandersteen said it was not a weak prosecution case. “You follow the cards, you follow (Ring),” he said. But he noted it was important for Ring to “face the elders” at a Koori court appearance in Bendigo seven days later, with the hope of finalising the matter with a corrections order. Ring was bailed on strict conditions to appear at Bendigo including a night curfew, daily reporting to Endeavour Hills police station and a ban on associating with the co-accused outside the boarding house. “You have a lock on the door,” Mr Vandersteen said. “If you don’t like the people around there, you can lock yourself away.” Ring is listed to appear at a mention hearing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 29 June.

cial monitoring at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court in January. On 29 May, magistrate Pauline Spencer took into account the offending either pre-dated or was “early days” into Jacobsson’s treatment regime. Jacobsson was put on another six-month corrections order with similar conditions. Ms Spencer didn’t cancel Jacobsson’s licence to help his quest for employment. However the accused was still serving a VicRoads-imposed licence suspension.

A man has pleaded guilty to stealing a safe during a brazen daylight burglary of a Fountain Gate donut outlet. Adrian Peter Jacobsson, of Pakenham, had entered the Donut King’s rear “staff only” zone and closed the door behind him about 2.45pm on 5 January, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard. A minute and a half later, Jacobsson emerged with a safe stashed up his jumper.
He later told police that he’d cracked the safe open - with its $1138.20 of cash inside - at a nearby park and put it in a bin. Jacobsson also pleaded guilty to drink-driving, driving while suspended and driving an unregistered vehicle in Officer on 31 January. Being ‘licensed’ to not exceed .00, Jacobsson blew 0.047. Between these two incidents, Jacobsson had been put on a community corrections order with mental health and substance treatment and judi-

Motorbike death Letters at Pearcedale
Lenscape
By Victoria Stone-Meadows The Victorian road toll has risen with the tragic loss of a motorbike rider in Pearcedale over the weekend. Police believe the rider lost control of his bike near the intersection of Pearcedale and Robinsons Roads at about 3.30pm on Saturday 27 May. Road crash investigators surmise the male rider was thrown from his bike when he struck the kerb. Emergency services attempted to resuscitate the man at the scene of the accident, but were unable to and he died at the scene. No other vehicles or pedestrians were involved in the crash and the rider is yet to be formally identified. The death of the motorbike rider brings the 2017 road toll to 101. At the same time last year, 119 people had been lost on our roads.

Lightning hits power supplies By Victoria Stone-Meadows A lightning strike caused widespread power outages in Cranbourne over the weekend, when the SP Ausnet Cranbourne substation was damaged. The power provider confirmed that lightning hit the substation at about 1.15am on Sunday 28 May, leaving about 2900 customers without power. A spokesperson from SP Ausnet said crews worked hard to restore power to those affected. “Our crews worked as quickly as possible to safely restore power to homes and businesses, with most back on by 5pm Sunday,” they said. “A generator has been installed to provide power to the remaining 10 customers, while further repair work is conducted.” “We are sorry for any inconvenience this outage caused.”

Perhaps MP Jude Perera should have turned around and looked at the condition of the bus stops that have been added to the station. He might have seen the rubbish and dead shrubs all along them - it would have wiped the smile off his face - then come along in the dark and seen the lights not working. We were told that there was to be an upgrade of bus stops with upgraded security and landscaping - none of which has happened - and now we are to lose more car parking for bus stops. Good idea, but now more people will park on the grass and ruin it in the wet. How about using some of the money on throwing down some gravel, or get the contractor to level out the rubbish they left last time? Paul Winder, Cranbourne.

When the Cranbourne/Berwick News broke the story of a new pub in a deconsecrated church in Cranbourne on Wednesday 24 May, our online readers responded overwhelmingly positively to the story. Here is just a small selection of the comments readers made on the story: Josh Browne: Serve VB, play tunes and have a pool table is all I ask for. Tracy Roscoe: Sounds very good to me. Wow, no pokies hope it all works for you. Good luck. Nikki Barfoot: Will always be Heavenly Pancakes to us lol. Check out the name of the new joint!! Graham Evans: If it’s for playing music, I’d have called it Heavenly JAMcakes. Niki Harrison: I think it’s a great idea and will certainly be at the grand opening if I can. Shelly Lynch: Supporting local musicians is a fantastic idea that is sorely lacking in Australia, but make sure it can be accessed by under 18s as well. Lynette Ashton: It’s never worked whatever went in there, let’s hope this succeeds. Adrian Swallow: We need live music that’s for sure and the craft beer sounds good. Leonie Durrington: You are kidding ... what a joke!! Lol. Greg Wylie: I think it’s a great idea! I Hope it goes well! Michael Kuc: Bring it on! A pub with no pokies; cannot wait. Bec Mitchell: OMG! Live music. Sign me up! Gabby Millen: Thank Christ! Somewhere to go! Darren Jumbo: Anything anti-pokies and more community music is OK by me. Matt Rosenfeld: This is the best thing I’ve ever heard.

Turned on VicRoads By Cam Lucadou-Wells

Making this change real Students at Narre Warren North Primary School chipped in change for an inspirational cause on 25 May. Andrew Biszczak took a pitstop at the school during his 3000-kilometre, fourmonth trek from Adelaide to Brisbane. He is running on average five marathons a week to raise at least $1 million for 1000 ‘Butterfly Children’ in Australia afflicted by one of the cruellest diseases, Epidermolysis Bullosa. The run is for charity DEBRA Australia which is seeking a cure for the disease that painfully blisters children from head to toe. Details: themilliondollarrun.com.au.

Casey Council has stepped up its lobbying for a right-turning-arrow signal at a notorious black-spot intersection in Clyde North. Councillor Susan Serey said the intersection at Clyde and Grices roads had become a growing bottleneck and hazard. “The Clyde North community know all too well how dangerous the intersection has become, particularly for those trying to turn right at the intersection. “It has become a major bottleneck with motorists forced to sit through many traffic-light cycles.” In the five years up to the end of 2016, there had been 12 injury collisions at the site, with many more near misses, Cr Serey said. On 16 May, Casey resolved to write to VicRoads as well as Minister for Roads Luke Donnellan for the arrow. The council will also make the project part of its ongoing advocacy campaign to the State Government. Cr Serey said on Casey's previous request for an arrow, VicRoads found other projects across the state ranked higher in priority. “Unless VicRoads acts to install a turning arrow soon, I fear it is only a matter of time before there is a serious accident which could result in a terrible tragedy.” VicRoads metro-south-east regional transport and planning director Savoula Lidis said a recent
Susan Serey says tragedy needs to be averted at a notorious Clyde North intersection. review concluded the traffic signals were already providing as much “green time” to side roads as possible. The review found that major changes, such as further traffic lanes, were required to introduce a turning arrow. Another option of simply changing the lights sequencing was found to have only a minimal impact. “VicRoads will continue to monitor the site with a view to considering future improvements,” Ms Lidis said.

Wade Noonan, left, and Judith Couacaud Graley, second right, with staff at Australian Precision Technologies.
Smoothing the move A Berwick components manufacturer has been given a $55,000 helping hand to adapt to the national automotive industry shutdown. Australian Precision Technologies (APT) received the grant for a new workforce strategy as part of the State Government’s program to help affected businesses in the automotive supply chain. The manufacturer produces customised and high-precision components for the automotive, aero-
nautics and defence industries. Its workforce strategy project will include an organisational redesign and management coaching workshops. During a visit to the firm on 30 May, Narre Warren South MP Judith Couacaud Graley said the grant would ensure APT thrived during the transition. “It’s terrific that we can support an innovative company to grow bigger and create more
jobs for local people.” The government’s Automotive Supply Chain Transition Program has so far provided $1.5 million to 40 companies. Industry and Employment Minister Wade Noonan said the grants helped companies identify future markets, plan for transition and ensure their workforce was sustainable. Marketing expert Damian Morgan wants to help small business grow.
Hear how small business has the edge There is a lot of hype and mythology about the threat of internet sales to small business says respected business analyst Damian Morgan. While internet sales continue to grow in Australia, the rate of growth has slowed, and it’s commodity products like books and TVs that best suit internet sales. Small businesses that offer a unique consumer experience with expert product knowledge, great customer service and after sales back-up are actually growing faster than internet sales, according to the ABS. “The internet is revolutionising our lives and the way we
buy certain products, but I can’t get a great cup of coffee on the net. And I can’t get my car serviced, my hair cut or great advice on which shirt looks best on me,” Mr Morgan said. “And this is where small business has the competitive advantage. “Local small businesses need to make the most of their local presence. We need to sell a personal experience, not just a product. “The small businesses that don’t offer a niche experience are almost certain to fail now that competition does not only come from shops in the next street or town, but from every
retailer on earth with a website.” Mr Morgan will present a series of 50 minute seminars on how small businesses in Casey and Cardinia can thrive in tough economic times as part of the Local Business Leaders Seminars. He will host seminars in Dandenong on Tuesday 20 June, Pakenham on Thursday 22 June and Narre Warren on Friday 23 June. All sessions are free with various seminar times available. Bookings are essential. Contact Robyn Butler on 5945 0682 or email robyn.butler@ starnewsgroup.com.au for more information.
WHY SOME ADS DON’T WORK. BAD ADS COST THE SAME TO RUN AS GOOD ADS. BUT THEY DON’T WORK. Too many small businesses lack sales because their advertising lacks impact. Learn how to build momentum in your marketing at this 50 minute workshop on Friday 23 June, 2017 at the Training Room, 64 Victor
Crescent, Narre Warren presented by respected marketing expert Damien Morgan. Attendance is free, but reservations are essential. Call Robyn Butler on 03 5945 0682.

HUSBAND AND WIFE’S BUILDING EMPIRE RAWDON Hill sales consultant Jillian Craig tells a delightful story about her boss Geoff Hardie, the owner and founder of the company which has been building homes in the south-east for more than 40 years. Jillian was showing potential buyers a Rawdon Hill spec home. As they walked towards the front door they spotted a man working in the garden. “The buyers said ‘we don’t want to interrupt the gardener.’ I said that’s not the gardener, it’s the owner of the company,” said Jillian, laughing. “Those buyers were so impressed.” “I’m not an office person,” chipped in Geoff, clearly amused by the anecdote. Since 1976, Geoff and his wife Sue have overseen the construction of more than 6000 homes throughout the south-east under the Rawdon Hill banner. The company was named after the Dandenong North street in which Sue and Geoff bought their first home. “We had a different name picked out but it was taken so our accountant took it upon himself to pick the name. I have to spell it customers all the time,” Geoff said. Originally from New Zealand, Sue and Geoff came to Australia for an 18 month working holiday in the ’70s. Despite having no qualifications, Geoff got a job in the building industry. “In those days it was easy to become a builder, you didn’t need a licence or anything. We built our first place in Cranbourne in 1976 and we have really gone from there.” He chuckles as he recounts the
difference in buyer expectations in the 1970s compared to now. “People wanted 10 squares, three bedrooms, one bathroom and no garages. Garages were an extra. “We sold that place (in Cranbourne) for $27,500 and still made a profit,” he added, laughing. “Today stamp duty costs more than that.” Geoff has also seen buyer expectations ratchet up decade by decade. “It amazes me. There is a lot of talk at the moment about first home buyers struggling to get into places but when they stop and think about it they want everything in the house, that’s why it costs so much. “Our first house we had we didn’t have carpet on the floors just bare boards because we couldn’t afford it at the time.” Geoff is also amazed by the speed of the growth that continues to transform the City of Casey and neighbouring Cardinia. “Oh yes, that has surprised me. “I have seen it developing over the years, but I didn’t think it would develop as quickly as it has.” In its early days Rawdon Hill was only allowed to build three houses per year. Today the company builds 150 homes a year. At its peak more than 300 families each year were handed the keys to their new Rawdon Hill home. “We pride ourselves on the fact when we finish a house we are prepared to live in it ourselves,” Geoff said. Geoff and Sue, who is the company
RAWDON HILL OWNER AND FOUNDER GEOFF HARDIE. secretary, employ 22 staff who Geoff describes as “family”. Jillian Craig, who joined Rawdon Hill nine years ago, agrees. “I say to people all the time, it’s a family business and it really is. It’s lovely. You feel like you are part of the family,” she said. “Geoff knows what is going on in the company all the time.” Today Geoff has scaled back his involvement, confining himself to site inspections before projects start. He also dabbles in unit development “not as a business but because I enjoy it”. He said Sue is “trying to get me to retire”. The couple are “impulsive travellers” and enjoy spending time with their grandchildren, who are five and seven. On Wednesday afternoons Geoff can be found on the golf course working
PICTURE: GARRY SISSONS on his handicap. “I’m not sure that I’ll retire for a while, I am happy contributing at the moment. I do little projects myself within the company structure, unit projects and that sort of thing.” Near the Rawdon Hill sales office in Berwick Waters, is a half completed house by collapsed builder Watersun Homes. In contrast, Rawdon Hill continues on a sure financial footing four decades from its humble beginnings in Scott Street, Cranbourne. Geoff maintains the secret to Rawdon Hill’s success is simple. “Just be nice,” he said, smiling. “A hands-on approach also helps. “I’ve had no regrets over the 40 years, that’s for sure.” For sales enquiries contact 9702 4477.

Young take on the world By Cam Lucadou-Wells A bunch of world-minded Nossal High School students proved they were ready to douse some of the world’s most urgent crises, according to former diplomat Alf Reina. Lauren Richardson, Aditya Gadgil, Jordan Van Rhyn and Hayden Radford received awards for a stellar performance at a Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) during a recent weekend on Phillip Island. “I’m always impressed and inspired by some of the things that kids come up with,” Mr Reina said. “I say to them our generation has failed to solve these problems, maybe yours can find a solution.” During the retreat, participants were split into 26 teams of two. Each team represented a member state of the United Nations in resolution debates on the Syria conflict, human rights in Myanmar, climate change and violence against girls and women. The students’ ability to get to the “substance” of the debates and reflect their nation’s viewpoint deeply impressed Mr Reina. The winning teams had gone beyond the debate, and came up with strategies such as offering aid, trade and labour migration opportunities or dishing out sanctions. “This may be a simulation exercise but the issues are real.” Mr Reina has been posted as an Australian Government diplomat in London, as well as working with the United Nations to help refugees during

said the students largely managed the process themselves, which bore outstanding results. “They are future community leaders and exemplify the potential, com-
mitment and passion present in the young people in our community.” The students’ costs for the weekend were covered by sponsor, Berwick Rotary Club.

Hi! I’m Julie, the new owner & director of The Base Yoga, offering two beautiful yoga studios in both Berwick & Pakenham, previously known as Yoga Plus. For many years I have been a student at Yoga Plus, having incredible teachers introduce & guide me through my classes, allowing me to find contentment in living life well. Now I share my love of yoga to others as a teacher and studio owner. Owning a business is challenging but the reward I receive from seeing our students actively doing something good for themselves is the best feeling yet. At The Base Yoga we provide a space for students to move their bodies and calm their mind ….and we have fun whilst doing it. Yoga is inclusive for everybody & as teachers, my instructors & I constantly seek ways to simply make people feel good in their own bodies. There will be a lot happening over the coming months at The Base Yoga so I invite people to come down and check us out.

Chasers get the rewards Cranbourne South trainer Ashlee Terry experienced her biggest thrill in greyhound racing when Maja Mahi Mahi brilliantly won the $145,000 Group 1 Sapphire Crown at Sandown Cup night last Thursday. “We’ve run second and third in a couple of group races but never won one,” the 26-year-old said. “I don’t really know how to describe it to be honest.” Maja Mahi Mahi was winless in four starts at Sandown Park coming into the keenly contested final. On the same night that Fanta Bale laid claim to being one of the sport’s greatest ever chasers by winning the $250,000 RSN Sandown Cup in breathtaking fashion, Maja Mahi Mahi began well from box two in the Sapphire Crown - holding her position near the rail in a frantic dash to the first turn. She moved off the rail through the turn, allowing Group 2 Laurels winner Up Hill Jill to rail up beneath her. But she refused to relinquish the lead and off the back straight had established a two-length lead. Up Hill Jill came again but Maja Mahi Mahi had all of the answers, holding on to win by half a length in 29.67. “I wanted the pink (box eight) but then the way the box draw turned out I was really happy with her drawn on the inside because there was going to be a mad charge to the first turn. I hoped she’d hold the rail and she did,” Terry explained. “When she was sitting up with the others I was just hoping she’d hold on. She just kept kicking.” Maja Mahi Mahi arrived from New South Wales in January and is the only greyhound in the kennel Terry trains for other people. The owners, the Middle Tote Syndicate, brought a large support team to cheer her on in the Group 1 feature. “Andrew, who I live with, has been mates with the owners for 10 or 12 years and they gave us a call,” Terry said. “They wanted a change of kennel and bring her to Victoria and see how she’d go. We got lucky I guess.
Cranbourne South greyhound trainer Ashlee Terry won the Group 1 Sapphire Crown with her beloved Maja Mahi Mahi. Pictures: SUPPLIED “It was nice to have a big group of people cheering her on. I think we’ll be celebrating tonight.” In Thursday’s main event, the crowd was simply buzzing as one of the best fields ever assembled for the great race headed to the boxes, and the 2017 running of the Sandown Cup delivered everything greyhound racing fans hoped it would. Western Australian chaser Teddy Monelli led early before Dundee Osprey swept around the field to take a commanding lead. Fanta Bale was denied a gap between runners and shuffled back to
midfield, while the odds-on favourite Burn One Down settled in a prominent position on the rail. Fanta Bale and Midnight Elsa made their moves down the back straight but with 150 metres to go, Fanta Bale still spotted the lamplighter a four length margin. But the tenacious little chaser railed brilliantly running for home to surge past the gallant Dundee Osprey and score by half a length in 41.87. The win came as a surprise to trainer Robert Britton who believed Fanta Bale would have to find the lead early to win the world’s richest race for stayers.
Fanta Bale could be considered one of greyhound racing’s greatest ever chasers following a stunning win in this year’s Sandown Cup. “We keep looking for reasons why she can’t win, but she keeps finding a way to prove us wrong,” Britton said following the win. “When Midnight Elsa headed her I thought we were on for place prize money only, but that’s what she does,
she’ll put her head out and keep trying. “I’ve had a lot of real good dogs over a lot of years, but I haven’t had what I’d call out an out champion. You’ve really got to put her in that league now.”
Will’s passion leads to state squad By Nick Creely
Will Clemens, far left, with his Victorian coach and fellow team-mates. Picture: SUPPLIED
Young Narre Warren East local student William Clemens is making his dream a reality. The 13-year-old passionate soccer star has been named in the Soccer Federation Victoria 7-A-Side State Squad Program, an outstanding achievement. 7-A-Side soccer is a variation to soccer that caters for people with cerebral palsy, acquired brain injury, stroke and vision impairment. It follows traditional FIFA rules - however - the soccer pitch is smaller, with only seven plays per side, one handed throw ins and there is no offside rule. Players are classified according to their disability - C5 have poor muscle control, C8 have minimal physical effects - Will is classed as C7. Will, a Year 7 student at Haileybury’s
Berwick campus, trains and plays with Berwick City, and has also been playing for three years at Northcote City Soccer Club, which was the only 7-A-Side disability team in Melbourne. The Clemens family have now started up a disability team with the Berwick Soccer Club, designed to give kids with disabilities the opportunity to play soccer, have fun and live an active lifestyle. It also gives kids the possibility of making both the Victorian and Paralympics teams, something Will’s mother Joanne believes her son can achieve. “He has his eye on keeping up with Victorian Squad Training, improving his skills and in the future he dreams of playing for the Pararoo’s Australian team (the Australian Paralympic team),” she said. “I believe his determination and passion
will get him there.” The youngster is over the moon to be selected for the 7-A-Side program, and can’t wait to do what he does best - kicking goals. “I feel very excited,” he said. “I enjoy kicking the ball and learning new tricks - I want to be a striker because I could have a possibility of scoring a goal.” He wanted to thank a certain person who has helped him along the journey to get him to where he is now. “I want to thank my mum because she introduced me to soccer and pushes me to make my dreams happen,” he said. The 7-A-Side team from Berwick City trains every Thursday night from 5.30 to 6.30 at Fox Rd Reserve in Narre Warren North - contact Joanne Clemens on 0417 339 140 if you are interested.

Sport
They’ve got the power By David Nagel Berwick and Cranbourne have consolidated themselves as the teams to beat in the South East Football Netball League this year after disposing of fellow premiership aspirants on Saturday. The Blues and Eagles have played off for the last two titles, Berwick supreme in 2015 before the Eagles reversed the result to end a heartbreaking run of four consecutive grand final defeats last year. After the weekend’s results showdown number three looks likely. Berwick produced its best football of the season to down Doveton by 49 points in the top-of-the-table clash at Robinson Oval. The Wickers weathered an early storm from the Doves, who led by 16 points at quarter time, before clicking into gear, kicking 15 goals to five to run away with the win. Brody Connelly was sensational for the Wickers, kicking six goals and benefitting greatly from a dominant midfield and half-back line. Skipper Madi Andrews, former
Melbourne midfielder James Magner, and youngster Bailey Asher were superb through the middle, while class acts like Michael Johnson, Ash Smith and Michael Riseley repelled the Doves’ best attacking forays. Clayton McCartney was dangerous early with two goals for the Doves while ruckman-turned-keydefender Frank D’Agostino was also impressive. Cranbourne was just as emphatic, overcoming a plucky Beaconsfield and windy conditions to score a 48-point victory at Casey Fields. Beacy started with the wind, with two goals to first-gamer Riley Verbi and another to Troy McDermott opening up an early advantage. But Cranbourne gradually took control, wrestling back command over the next two quarters before putting an ailing opponent to bed. The reigning champs kicked 6.5 to 1.2 in the final quarter, their fitness levels surprising considering their big-bodied reputation. “Don’t underestimate our pace, we’ve injected quite a bit into this team over the last couple of years,”
said Cranbourne coach Simon Goosey, in response to a comment about the bigger bodies. “I’ll back our fitness in, and these days games open up after half time, there’s normally an arm wrestle and then they open up.” Cranbourne spread the load beautifully on the weekend, nippy types like Ryan Jones, Khaled Kandakji and Zak Roscoe kicking two each, with key-positioned mid Shaun Marusic also chiming in with a couple. Dillan Bass created plenty of run for the winners while Ryan Bromley, Corey Walker and Daniel Battaglin were just as effective for Beacy. Tooradin welcomed two key inclusions for their first games of the season on Saturday and Setanta O’hAilpin and Nathan Page played massive roles in a 147-point thumping of Hampton Park. O’hAilpin, the former Carlton and GWS tall, kicked 12 goals on debut for the Seagulls while Page, returning from a nasty hamstring injury, helped himself to nine of the best in a rotation through the midfield.
“We really couldn’t have done anything more than what we did,” Tooradin coach Lachie Gillespie said. “We took their best shot early and then played really good football for four quarters. How the form stacks up we’ll wait and see, but we’ll gain a lot of confidence from that performance.” The Seagulls struggled to shake free in the first quarter but soon took command of the contest with a 10.3 to 3.1 second term. They backed that up with nine goals to two in the third before kicking five unanswered goals in the last. And Narre Warren scored a 67-point win over an improving Pakenham. Trent Papworth, Trent Cody, and Aaron Wilson kicked three each for the Magpies who kicked 12 goals to three after half time. Emerging ruckman Liam Tyrrell was joined by pocket-sized dynamo Jake Barclay and Sam Blackwood as the Lions’ best contributors.
Doves on fire show how the Eagles fare By David Nagel We are about to find out a lot more about the true credentials of Doveton after the free-scoring Doves won a high-scoring contest,57-51, against Berwick on Saturday. The Doves leap-frogged Cranbourne into fourth position with the win, but face two of the top three, Tooradin and Narre Warren, before the half-way point of the season. Coach Liz Edwards believes her team is more than ready to match it with the better teams in the competition. “It’s all about sticking to the basics for us, scoring from our centre passes, not wasting possession, just keeping the pressure on the opposition by scoring at every opportunity,” Edwards said. The Doves exploded out of the blocks in the first quarter against Berwick on Saturday, with Rahni Samason (goal shooter) and Shae Gee (goal attack) combining beautifully in the attacking ring and taking full advantage of Hayley Stewart’s dominant form through the midcourt. That opening burst proved crucial for the Doves, leading by seven at quarter time and maintaining that advantage as the game unfolded. Berwick continue to show signs of improvement and obviously took a lot of confidence away from last week’s first win of the season against Pakenham. Morgan Thomas (goal keeper) did well before handing over to the impressive Abuk Kenyang in the second half, while Emily Pratt, Olivia Macente, Sarah Nash, Renae Gill and Caitlin Anthony all shared their time through the midcourt. Beaconsfield can put its feet up for this week’s bye with a big smile on its face after a tough eight-goal, 42-34, win over Cranbourne at Casey Fields. Cranbourne’s 11-10 quarter-time lead was turned into a five-goal deficit at half time before extending it to 11 at the final break. Beaconsfield scored 25 goals to 13 in the second and third quarters to take full control of the match.
Rylee Nelson (centre) was outstanding for Beaconsfield through the midcourt, while Bianca Sanzaro (GS), Dani Cameron (GD), Ash Gill (wing attack) and Kate Murphy (wing defence) all performed wonderfully well for four quarters. Natalie Sparks (WA) and Steph Ryan (WD) had good games for Cranny while Tahlia Coates (goal attack) had a very strong final quarter. Tooradin made the biggest statement of the weekend with a thumping 52-14 victory over Hampton Park at Robert Booth Reserve. The Seagulls made travelling look easy, packing away the four points with a dominant 14-3 opening quarter. The Seagulls defenders were outstanding with Ebony Dolan and Bec Kinna allowing the Redbacks a maximum of just four goals in any one quarter. Shona Wells and Jess Maher were brilliant through the middle for the winners who taught the Redbacks a netball lesson. Hampton Park will need to rebound strongly against Pakenham this week after its poorest performance of the season. Shannon Rennison and Karli Foster did well to restrict the damage done by the undefeated Seagulls and could their heads high. And Narre Warren has overcome a strong first-quarter challenge from Pakenham to run away with a 59-30 victory at Kalora Park. The Lions matched it with the reigning champs early, trailing 1110 at the first break on the back of some stellar contributions from Emma Jones (WA), Kate McGowan (GK) and Keely Wright (GD). But the Magpies have class all over the court, and it started to show after quarter time. They hit back with 12 goals to five in the second term and unleashed their full power with 20 goals to six in the final stanza. Gabby Dwyer (GS) scored 40 goals for the Magpies while a brilliant midcourt led by Leigh Taylor, Bec Potalej, Erin Clark and Britt Mashado overwhelmed the Lions in the dying stages.

Thrilling drawn game for Comets By Nick Creely FFV SOCCER WRAP REVIEW - ROUND 9 STATE LEAGUE 1 - SOUTH-EAST It was an entertaining Saturday afternoon at Warner Reserve, with the Casey Comets drawing level with South Springvale 2-2. It was danger signs early for the Comets when Alex Rojas converted a goal inside the first five minutes, but the visitors found the net with an impressive goal to Ray Markley in the 24th minute. The game was tight in the second half, and nothing could separate them at the end with both sides finding a goal late in the game. STATE LEAGUE 2 - SOUTH-EAST Berwick City took on second placed Eltham in an important game for both teams promotion aspirations. City once again were slow off the blocks and despite absorbing constant pressure from Eltham managed to hold them off until the 30th minute when a lack of communication at the back allowed the Eltham striker to score unopposed into an open goal. Going into the break 1-0 down it was important that City didn’t concede an early goal in the second half, however there wasn’t much they could do when just after the resumption of play the referee awarded a penalty for a dubious deliberate handball in the box. It was at this point that something seemed to click with the Berwick players as they started to throw everything into the game and after several near misses finally
scored through David Di Iorio in the 62nd minute. The final 30 minutes was all Berwick as they dominated the game and went close to scoring about half a dozen times but in the end a jubilant Eltham held on to win 2-1. “We started slowly again and just when we were getting back into the game the referee awarded a penalty which most times we don’t see given, however we’ve only got ourselves to blame as you can’t give good teams a lead and although we came close to finding an equaliser several times towards the end, it just wasn’t to be today,” coach Gerry McDonagh said postmatch. Meanwhile, down at Waratah Reserve, Doveton’s amazing form continued, knocking off North Caulfield to cruise to a 3-0 victory. The Doves are on top-of-theladder, three points ahead of the Eltham Redbacks. STATE LEAGUE 5 - SOUTH Pakenham United continue to find a way to fight it out against the top sides, this time drawing level with second placed Rowville Eagles 2-2 on Saturday. The United are just one of three sides with less than two losses, and now sit sixth and breathing down the neck of the top-four. It wasn’t so positive for Drouin - who are now the bottom placed side - with a damaging 0-6 loss to Dandenong Warriors. Bunyip was no match for the undefeated Sandown Lions, falling 4-2 in an encouraging display for the Strikers.
Doveton is almost unstoppable at the moment. 166493

Cavs drop down in ladder slump By Nick Creely BIG V BASKETBALL REVIEW - ROUND 10 STATE CHAMPIONSHIP MEN The Casey Cavaliers have slumped to sixth on the table after an 83-111 loss to top side Knox Raiders on Saturday night. A large crowd gathered at Casey Indoor to see the Cavs take it to a competition heavyweight, but in a disappointing result, the Cavs were no match for the premiership fancies, who ran them ragged from the outset. The Raiders built a solid nine-point lead at the first break, extending that lead to 17 at half time, before killing off the con-
test quickly after the break to put the result beyond doubt. Raheem Lemons (18 points, eight rebounds) was the best on the night for the Cavs. DIVISION ONE WOMEN It would have been an agonising trip home for the Cavaliers, who travelled up to face Mildura on Saturday night and were blown away 93-50 in a lopsided contest. After a slow start, the Heat was dominant - piling on the pressure and running away with the game in a brutal second quarter. Vanessa Power (30 points, five assists) was too much for
the Cavs to handle and led them to victory, while for the Cavs, Tarry Wilkin (20 points, seven rebounds) battled hard on a tough night with little help. YOUTH LEAGUE TWO MEN An impressive duo of wins over the weekend saw the Cavaliers jump into second spot, with victories over Western Port on Saturday and Warrnambool on Sunday. In the thriller on Saturday night at Casey Indoor, the Cavs defeated the Steelers 84-82. It seemed the Cavs got the break early in the third when they scored six unanswered points after an even first half,
but the Steelers roared back to life. With a minute left to go, the scores were level at 82 apiece. Hunter Marks then converted a foul to score two points and seal the win. On Sunday, the Cavs, sky high on momentum, belted the Seahawks 111-65. Hunter Marks (28 points) and Jordan Gooiker (19 points) were major contributors for the Cavs. YOUTH LEAGUE TWO WOMEN The Cavs had the bye over the weekend but remain top-ofthe-ladder with a 10-1 record.

Eagles run out of time By Nick Creely VICTORIAN WOMENS FOOTBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 3 Cranbourne remain winless after falling in tough conditions to Geelong by seven points at Frenken Homes Oval on Saturday, but there were plenty of positives for the Eagles. The Cats started like a house on fire when Michelle Fedele and Hannah Burchell scored early goals to take a 13-point lead into quarter time, before the weather wreaked havoc on the contest and meant scoring became difficult. Torrential rain and dangerous winds meant the game completely changed in flow, with the match resembling soccer at times as the ball became a bar of soap, with gaining territory the main priority for both sides. Without a goal for the game, the Eagles all of a sudden sparked into action with five minutes left in the match, with Leah Olsen and Stephanie Brown snagging majors within two minutes of each other to narrow the margin to five-points. The Eagles were pumped up and with all the momentum to take them over the line. But the Cats dug deep to claim the four points in the tense final moments, defending solidly and find a way to keep its unbeaten run alive. There were plenty of positives for the Eagles - they kept the Cats to just the single goal after quarter time - and despite the slow start were able to keep up with one of the early pacesetters in the VFLW competition this season.
Only two weeks ago, Eagles coach Sein Clearihan declared his side was still a couple of weeks off from being at its best, saying they are still trying to find their feet as a team. “The next couple of weeks we just need to grind it out, and in Round 5 or 6 we will start hitting our straps,” he said “We are heading in the right direction - it’s all about growth too, and developing the young girls to play to structure at this level.” Potential AFLW draftee Darcy Guttridge was a standout for the Eagles, with the gun youngster continuing to shine at the state level, while Bianca Jakobsson, Kim Cunico and Cara Moody were important in a vital step forward for their season. The Eagles have the perfect chance to open its 2017 account when they travel to face the similarly winless Box Hill on Sunday.
Berwick City Soccer Club celebrated the huge growth of female participation in the sport with a special Ladies Day celebration at its home ground on Sunday. Jack Thomas Reserve in Narre Warren North was awash with players dressed in the red and white colours of the club as six of the club’s eight female teams took to the field. Berwick City Soccer Club has this year grown to 138 registered female players, five female committee members, two female coaches and countless female team managers and volunteers throughout the club. Since the Australian Matildas success at the FIFA World Cup in 2015 the club’s committee set a key objective to grow the junior female base within the club to support the already successful senior ladies teams. This now qualifies them to play in the finals of the 2017 Netball Victorian Association Championships on Sunday 25 June at the State Netball Hockey Centre. The team competed against 17 other teams to take out the Championships. It was a fabulous effort by the girls in very wintry conditions. Reviews and news…
Baleno has room to impress By Alistair Kennedy The new Baleno comes in two specification levels - GL and GLX. GL is priced at $16,990 with manual gearbox and $17,990 in automatic mode. There’s a healthy $5000 extra for the auto-only GLX that adds a more fuelefficient engine, LED headlights, alloy wheels, foglights, push-button start, digital climate control, rear disc brakes, steering wheel reach adjustment, and gear shift paddles. Baleno GL and Swift share engines and transmissions but Baleno does have one point of distinction in that its GLX variant is powered by a modern threecylinder 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine of the type that is popular in European cars. GL has the choice of five-speed manual or four-speed automatic; GLX is six-speed auto only. Baleno’s designers have ensured that maximum use is made of its larger external dimensions and it really does feel like a larger vehicle inside. By reducing door liner intrusion into the front seats they’ve been able to increase front seat shoulder room and there’s enough rear knee and legroom to allow two adults to travel in relative comfort. Boot space is an impressive 355 litres which can be expanded to 756 litres with the rear seatbacks folded and even more through removable side trims that increase the lateral dimensions.
Model range Suzuki Baleno is back - with the latest looks and excellent cabin space.
Baleno GL’s steering wheel can only be adjusted for height, GLX also gets reach adjustment. Display is through a seven-inch colour touchscreen located in the middle of the dashboard and split into four components that can be set to each driver’s preference with a choice of six different set-ups. Our only problem with the touchscreen was that the audio volume control is a vertical touch slider located

on the left of the screen that needs to be tapped continuously and so causes far too much driver inattention. Fortunately there is a steering wheel volume control. Bluetooth pairing is simple and intuitive and we were tuned in within a minute. There are smartphone interfaces with ApplePlay and MirrorLink, the latter an independent, non-proprietary system that caters for Android phones. As is the growing trend there’s no
CD player. Satellite navigation is standard on both Baleno variants. Standard safety equipment includes six airbags, ABS brakes with brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution, electronic stability program, hill hold assist, reversing camera, daytime running lights, and twin IsoFix child seat anchor points. The latest Baleno has a new, lighter and stronger platform that makes use of a number of extra-high-tensile materials
adding structural rigidity and therefore occupant safety. Our test car was the 1.0-litre BoosterJet auto. We’d like to have seen a manual version but commercial reality ensured that it wouldn’t be viable in auto-centric Australia. There is some turbo lag at low revs but once past that the little Suzuki is a delightful little car to drive, almost living up to its engine’s name. Around town its small dimensions made it easy to slip through traffic and to park while it cruised comfortably on the motorway segment of our test. Its light weight (975 kg) and strong platform provides an excellent powerto-weight ratio for ride and handling that’s right up with the best in the segment. Fuel consumption during our week in the Baleno averaged out at 5.9 litres per 100 kilometres, not that far above the listed 5.2 L/100km. To arrange a test drive contact Berwick Suzuki, 2-12 Clyde Road, Berwick. Phone 9709 1900.
