THE LATEST IN FOOD

As we head toward World Environment Day on Monday 5 June it is timely to reflect on the Noosa Biosphere Reserve. This year marks 10 years since it was recognised by the UN as an area of terrestrial, marine and coastal ecosystems where humans and the environment co-exist in a balanced relationship. To maintain this status an application will this year need to be made to the UN. The Noosa Biosphere Reserve is managed by the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation which is run by eight volunteer directors including one appointed by Noosa Council. Over the past two weeks the foundation has undergone some role changes. The council has changed appointments as Cr Frank Wilkie has taken over the role from mayor Tony Wellington. The chairman Campbell Corfe last week retired and his position has been taken on by Dick Graham, a cattle farmer and former businessman whose roles include Noosa and District Landcare treasurer and founding president of both Country Noosa and Noosa Community Biosphere Association. A number of residents have questioned the worth to the community of the biosphere and its appeal to tourists. We will watch with interest the progress of the biosphere and its foundation. ● Margaret Maccoll

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT… ALIVE AND MOVING You may have noticed the 'While I’m alive...’ wall up at the convenience store at Peregian Beach over the last week. Last Wednesday, this travelling community project was put up, and within the day it was full. Originating in New Orleans, this concept came from Noosa Council CEO Brett Dechastel to reflect the trend seen around the world. Different types of communities in the Noosa Shire can come together and take stock of their lives and think about their dreams. There has been one in Cooroy which is always full and cleaned every few days, and this one, which was previously at Noosa Junction, will be temporarily at Peregian as it continues on tour throughout the Noosa Shire. Learn more about these projects at http:www.beforeidie.cc/site/about/ ● Hollie Harris

Noosa Council has spent less than half of its $24.6 million annual 2016/’17 budget and have about a quarter left over once commitments are covered, but council says this situation is not unusual. At the May Council meeting, the financial performance report showed there was $10.3 million in committed expenditure leaving council $5.9 million to spend by the end of the financial year. Council’s Acting Planning and Infrastructure director Allan Hull said council’s target spend for 2016/’17 would be 90 per cent with a 10 per cent carry over. “It is not unusual for council to have some unspent funds from its capital works program at the end of the financial year. In some cases, this is because the full budget allocation is not required to complete the projects and in other cases the timing of the projects means they extend into the next financial year,” he said. Allan said a degree of flexibility was important to have. He said this year, for example, council’s need to tender a second time for a contractor to replace some road culverts under Kinmond Creek Road delayed the project. “As a result, this particular $2 million project has to be carried over to next year,” he said. “Meanwhile, some of our road surfacing program has been brought forward. This sort of give-and-take is common to ensure best use of resources and a seamless flow of works.” ●

Almost 4000 athletes, many local, swam, ran or cycled in the Noosa Ultimate Sports Festival held over the weekend. Marketing manager Ultan O’Dwyer said the event for all ages and abilities was “about having fun”. “There are a lot of families and a lot of people coming for the first time,” he said. Ultan said the courses with the swim on Noosa Main Beach, the run along the river and cycle through Noosa hinterland showed off the spectacular area. “Participants enjoyed the views of Noosa on our new-run courses, and cyclists loved the ride. Travelling through the early morning mist in the mountains was magical," he said. Ultan said a number of triathletes used the event for training as the distances were Ironman distances and quite a few participated in the swim event on Saturday and the ride or run on Sunday. There were some more serious competitors including last year’s male and female winners of the half marathon, Isaias Beyn and Cassie Fien who had returned to defend their wins. Isaaias reclaimed his title after winning in 1hr 6min 39sec with Cassie coming in second at 1hr 15min 19sec to Danielle Allen, 23, who finished in 1hr 14min 57sec. ● Margaret Maccoll

COVER STORY

MOGGIE -

LARGER

THAN LIFE BY RON LANE

A

Anton Mogg. A good man, great family; and proud to say -- they’re Our People.

fter vacating the premises at the completion of the wedding banquet, some of the wedding group, moving through the streets of Cobram were noisy. The police were not happy. Words were exchanged, a stubby flew through the air and a brother and sister, both members of the wedding party, were quickly on their way to the local lock up. Next day, unaware of the night’s little escapades, the newlyweds turned up at a family barbecue to continue wedding celebrations. “A great wedding,” said the bridegroom to his father. “Great alright,” was the reply. “Both your sister and brother ended up in the slammer for the night.” Now 23 years later, as he finished relating the tale Anton Mogg, known to all and sundry as Moggie lent back in his chair and laughed. “Now that was a wedding to remember. Neither my wife, Julie, nor I had any idea of what had transpired. But Dad did- and he was not amused.” Born in 1964 or as Moggie, a lover of music and former D.J. tells it, “the year the Beetles arrived in Australia,” he grew up in Cobram and was educated at the Cobram High School, then Assumption College at Kilmore. On leaving high school, he entered the workforce as a bank teller for the National Bank; a job he was to hold for three years before moving into the area that was to become his forte, the hospitality industry. “I started at the Cobram-Barooga Sports Club. The club was situated just over the border in New South Wales, and those were the days when N.S.W. had pokies but Victoria didn’t. So working in a place like the sports club gave me a good grounding.”

“I HAVE SHARED DRINKS WITH PEOPLE FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE … PRIME MINISTERS, STATE PREMIERS, ROCK STARS, SPORTING LEGENDS … EVEN GANGSTERS. IT CERTAINLY MAKES FOR AN INTERESTING PROFESSION.”

It was while living in Cobram that Moggie met Julie, his future wife and a relationship started. Then in 1988 after having spent some six years at the sports club, they decided to set off on a trip around Australia. “We got as far as Noosa and that was it. I started a job at the Reef Hotel as the D.J. and night club manager. I also joined the Noosa Tigers the local Aussie Rules Football Club and spent several seasons playing as a full forward; and our trip around Australiawell that just didn’t happen.” Moggie’s involvement with the Tigers continues even to this day. After his playing days ended, he coached junior grades for several years and continues his input by being heavily involved in the vital and never-ending work of fund-raising. When it comes to Aussie Rules football, his love of the game was handed down by his father Les. “My Dad was a legend in the North Melbourne Club playing for many years; also during his career he represented Victoria. After Melbourne he moved to Cobram club as captain/coach where he won six flags in seven years and that is quite an achievement. Also during my time there, my brother Peter and I in 1984 played a season together, and coached by our father, we went through undefeated.“ “By the early ’90s, I had moved up the ranks at the Reef, and then in ’94 we decided to get married. The wedding was held back home in Cobram at the Cobram- Barooga Golf Club, and as I said, it was in more ways than one, definitely a night to remember. Big crowd with people from Noosa and Melbourne.” Now some 23 years on, Moggie and Julie are the proud parents of daughter Cassidy aged 19, now studying at Queensland Uni and son Jordan 16, studying in Year 12. In 1998, the position of club manager for the Surf Club, the business arm of the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club, was advertised and Moggie applied. Under the board chairmanship of John Little, his application was successful, and this was the start of what was to be, a very productive relationship. Moggie started just at the completion of the surf club’s first-ever major renovation, so with the alterations and the drive for new membership, he had his work cut out for him. A major part of his success at the club he attributes to the work and support of his Administration manager Carmel Savage. “We have worked together for 18 years, having first met at the Reef Hotel. When I moved to the Surf Club, I asked her to come with me and happily she said ‘yes’.” Surf club treasurer and life member Wally Schaller, who was a member of the interviewing panel for Moggie’s application said, “Moggie is rather unique, he has outstanding people skills, the ability to bring people together. This is a major factor in the hospitality industry.” To put Moggie’s attitude into words, he sums it up beautifully when he said, “Seeing our customers happy that means everything to me. Happy customers always come back; it’s the true basis for success.” Regarding the performance of his duties, he said, “I have shared drinks with people from all walks of life. Prime ministers, state premiers, rock stars, sporting legends,” and he added with a grin, “even gangsters. It certainly makes for an interesting profession.” In the ever-expanding world of the hospitality industry, there are many avenues to cover; government legislation to be addressed, liquor laws to be observed, work place health

and safety to be studied; the list goes on and on. In the tourist centres, connection with the tourism people is of the utmost importance. Being ever conscious of this, Anton Mogg has certainly been fully committed. At present, he is chairman of the local Liquor Accord. The Accord represents all licence venues in the Noosa Shire; this necessitates his consulting, regarding liquor licence, with police and other stakeholders. He also sits on the club’s advisory council with Clubs Queensland when required. This body represents clubs from Cairns to the Tweed. Some time ago, the chairman of the Surf Club Board of Directors Ian Young OAM, instructed the board to get the club more involved in the community, and Moggie’s skills with rallying people really came to the forefront. “One of the first major projects I organised was a fundraiser to assist those families who suffered in the Black Saturday fires. Some of those people had been through sheer hell and to be able to help, not just through finance, but personal assistance as well, was very rewarding. I am proud to say that on that night which was one of my biggest at the club, we raised in the vicinity of $50,000 through auctions and other things in just over three hours. The club was packed; the community really got behind us and support was great.” Others to come under Moggie’s umbrella are the veterans groups-- Soldier On and Mates 4 Mates. This effort was repeated following the tragic Brisbane floods when, under Moggie’s supervision the club again raised some $50,000. “The local response to this tragedy was also incredible, and is something we should be proud of.” When he looks back, he estimates that the club, with community support over the last 10 years, has raised well over half a million dollars for charities and disasters. Also, through his sporting connections at the AFL, Moggie has successfully opened many doors, and as a result of his efforts, most sporting and not-for-profit organisations in Noosa have been assisted. Another issue, in which Moggie was the instigator, was employing and helping of Down Syndrome children at the club, an issue he has been personally persuing for 15 years. However, one of Moggie’s habits that really stand out is his visits to the local hospital. “Every Easter and Christmas, for 15 years, Cassidy, Jordie and I have been going to the local hospital to visit patients; in particular the elderly. The kids, who are now patrolling members of the Noosa Surf Club, wear their patrol uniforms and give out lollies and flowers; the patients love it. It gives them a real shot in the arm.” Apart from his family, work and helping others, his other big interest is his love of music. “Over the years, I have made it a habit to see the best; Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jnr, Elton John, Whitney Houston, U2, Sting, just to name a few.” Because of this love of music, Moggie is now helping start careers for young local musicians by bringing them to the surf club for Sunday afternoon gigs. “One local act, the Dennis Sisters, has caught on, and they are really starting to go places in the world of coastal/ country music. They have featured at the Gympie Muster and Tamworth; that sort of thing makes our support and effort all worthwhile.” ●

NEWS CAR AND CARDS STOLEN

COUNCIL MULLS WILDLIFE HABITAT BY MARGARET MACCOLL Noosa Council is in talks to buy Johns Landing to secure the environmentally significant 49-hectare property that has been home to the Johns Family since 1896. Council says the Noosa River foreshore site contains endangered vegetation, is a potential koala habitat part of a wildlife corridor running beside river between lakes Cootharaba and Cooroibah. Pat Johns said she and husband Ben would like to stay, but it wasn’t possible. “It’s a shame to move. It’s a beautiful place, but we’d like to settle down and put our feet up,” she said. Mayor Tony Wellington said council was looking to rehabilitate degraded sections of the land and make sure that the riparian areas on the river bank were protected from future development. “This parcel adds to the connective wildlife corridor joining hinterland forests with the Cooloola section of the Great Sandy National Park,” he said. As part of its negotiations to purchase the land, council is working with government agencies and service organisations to find permanent accommodation for long-term residents of the campground. Council’s Community Services director Alan ‘Fox’ Rogers said while the camping ground currently provided cheap

Pat Johns at the property that may soon pass into Noosa Council's hands. accommodation for low- income battlers, the living conditions are far from suitable for permanent residents. “There is no electricity or running water at the campsites, and people are living a long way from shops, schools and other services,” he said. “To help people find more suitable accommodation, we’ve assembled a team of local services made up of representatives from a wide range of community and government agencies. These include the Department of

Housing, Department of Communities, the Salvation Army Accommodation and Housing Services, United Synergies, Centrelink, Anglican Church of Noosa and Coast2Bay Housing Group. Pat said most people had found places to go, but not everyone was happy to move. “They probably wouldn’t find anywhere like this,” she said. She said she and Ben hoped to buy a villa in Noosa. Council said negotiations had not yet been finalised. ●

Cars were stolen last week from Noosa Junction and Tinbeerwah after keys were taken. Noosa police Acting Senior Sergeant Mick Doogue said thieves stole keys from a woman’s handbag within a business at Noosa Junction before using them to steal a car. Thieves also stole keys from a house at Timbeerwah and then ended up driving off with the car. Mick said credit cards were also removed and used to purchase goods from various outlets. He said police recovered the car from Noosa Junction after it was involved in a traffic accident, and charges were being laid. He said the car taken from Tinbeerwah was still to be found. ●

LOCK IT OR LOSE IT Noosa police are warning residents to lock up their cars and put their valuables out of sight after four cars were recently broken into in Tewantin. Acting Senior Sergeant Mick Doogue said the cars targeted had been left unlocked in driveways and on the street. He said all the cars broken into were parked in the same street. ●

NEWS Whale tail at Peregian Beach. Pictures: MICHAEL NOAD

LISTENING IN ON WHALES BY MARGARET MACCOLL

“We’ve successfully tagged a lot of whales before, but only one in a group. They get a bit wary after that,” she said. Professor Michael Noad said the suction cap tags were “tapped” onto a whale using a 6m carbon fibre pole. The tags fall off after a few hours and have to be retrieved to read the data. Rebecca said previous studies had found mothers and calves used a low vocal tone identifiably different from the serenading of the males, who sing mating songs found to have passed down from generations or groups.

As National Whale Day approaches on 4 June, University of Queensland humpback whale researchers are looking forward to this year tapping into the chat between mums and their calves as they migrate past Peregian Beach. This is the 20th year whale researchers have based themselves at Peregian Beach and Dr Rebecca Dunlop said this year’s challenge was to place acoustic tags on both mother and calf in order to record the calls between them.

Researchers tap an acoustic tag on a whale at Peregian Beach.

Rebecca said the lower vocal tones were used by females to calves and between those not wanting to attract male attention.“The calf goes off and mum has to call it back. We’ll be investigating those sorts of calls," she said. It was Michael who first realised the advantage of Peregian Beach as a humpback whale research area when he was staying rent-free at his parents' beach house while

finishing his PhD 20 years ago. With Emu Mountain a good vantage point and the whales passing close to the beach, particularly on their southbound migration, Peregian Beach has been their base ever since. In that time they have studied various aspects of behaviour and communication and plan to next research how whales behave in relation to ships and boats. ●

NEWS An exhibition of diverse art by close friends Gabi Dick and Clare Riddington Jones will be opened at 11am on Saturday 3 June at the Banana Shed Gallery, Pomona, by past president of NSACA Jan Bentley. Their journey to arrive at the exhibition has covered art courses, workshops, exhibitions and countries. Their art includes various media and subject matter. ●

ALL SET FOR OCEAN ROAR SERIES More than 250 lifesavers lined up at Rainbow Beach on the weekend for Round Three of Surf Life Saving Queensland’s Ocean Roar Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) Series. The high-octane IRB series saw competitors battle it out across two days of racing, putting their surf skills to the ultimate test in a series of fast and furious rescue simulations. SLSQ sports manager Stuart Hogben said it was important to remember the events were a genuine reinforcement of lifesaving skills. “The races are all about simulating rescue situations and testing the abilities of drivers and crew as they’re transferred to a competitive setting,” he said. The competition continues an action-packed six weeks of IRB racing on the Sunshine Coast, ahead of the Queensland Championships at Kawana Waters on July 1-2. ●

RECONCILIATION WEEK In celebration of National Reconciliation Week, the Sunshine Coast Council marked the adoption of its Reconciliation Action Plan with a flag-raising ceremony and traditional performances. Each year, National Reconciliation Week runs from 27 May to 3 June to celebrate the achievements in our journey towards reconciliation, with hundreds of events held nation-wide.

DIGITAL HUB ON THE WAY The Peregian Beach digital hub moves a step closer to completion with preparatory work underway on the northern end of the Community House carpark on David Low Way. Contractors expect to finish the project by Christmas, with the new extended carpark to open ahead of the building completion, weather permitting. To make way for the digital hub, council will close the existing carpark on David Low Way. But it will stay open until council puts the finishing touches on the new temporary carpark, already underway next to the tennis club, plus the Rufous Lane construction. “Rufous Lane is currently under construction. It will provide easy pedestrian access between Peregian Beach village and the new temporary carpark on Rufous Street, which vehicles can enter via Woodland Drive,” Project manager Adam Britton said. Adam said works on David Low Way to construct pedestrian refuges and a raised crossing would This year’s National Reconciliation Week is of particular significance as it commemorates the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Referendum and 25th anniversary of the 1992 Mabo High Court decision. ●

Some farm workers have been forced to work entire days harvesting produce without food or drink, without pay, as well as being forced to live in isolated transient accommodation. “Our proposed new laws will be backed by stiff penalties and some offenders will be liable for criminal prosecution. “A compliance unit will also be established to check licence holders for continued compliance with their licence conditions, and to investigate complaints.” ●

NEWS ELECTORAL CHANGES OPEN FOR APPEAL

TRADING HOURS DILEMMA While state politicians debate trading hours, White’s IGA owner Roz White is closely watching proceedings in the hope they are not extended. Roz owns four Whites IGAs in Peregian Beach, Bli Bli, Mt Coolum, and Mooloolaba and in 23 years business has felt the effects of extending trading hours first hand. She said while it benefitted the major supermarkets it dramatically affected her business. “It’s happened to our business several times. Every time we’ve had to create redundancies and it’s caused up to 40 per cent less trade,” she said. Employment and Industrial Relations Minister Grace Grace said the Trading (Allowable Hours) Amendment Bill, currently being debated, aimed at creating jobs and cutting red tape. Ms Grace said government’s proposed reforms were backed by the National Retail Association, the Shopping Centre Council of Australia and Queensland Tourism Industry Council. “Small businesses can leverage and mutually benefit

Michael and Roz White are against extended trading hours. from larger retailers opening,” she said. However, Roz disputed these claims saying she’d never seen the facts to back up that assertion. She said it was the broader ramifications for small suppliers that were important. “We bring local businesses to life and that creates a healthy market. It builds choice,” she said. State Member for Noosa Glen

Elmes said the government’s attempt to standardise trading hours would not create jobs and would not stimulate our local economy. “Rather, it will lead to less employment due to a drop in independent retail sales, of which hundreds of millions of dollars are injected into the Queensland economy by small independent players, such as independent retailers IGA,” he said. ●

The Noosa electorate will take in the majority of Pomona while Rainbow Beach, Inskip and Cooloola will remain in Gympie in the state electorate boundary redistribution announced on 26 May. The Queensland Redistribution Commission (QRC) delivered its final determination on its most significant realignment in more than 30 years which has increased electorates from 89 to 93 across the state. QRC Chairman Hugh Botting said QRC had been able to make some changes to its original proposal based on suggestions received during public consultation periods. “The commissioners listened to what Queenslanders had to say, and where it was possible, we acted on community interests and altered proposed boundaries,” he said. State Member for Noosa Glen Elmes said he welcomed the communities of Pomona, Cooran and Kin Kin into the Noosa Electorate but was sad to have lost Eumundi, Doonan, Verrierdale and Peregian Springs to the new seat of Ninderry. In other changes on the Sunshine Coast, suburbs of Parrearra, Minyama and Buddina will remain in Kawana instead of shifting to the Buderim electorate, and Buderim now includes Sippy Downs and Palmview. “The commission’s number one priority was the number of voters in each electorate because that’s quite simply the law,” Mr Botting said. “Every district must contain relatively the same number of electors so that each vote carries equal weight at the ballot box.” Electors have three weeks to appeal the realignments in the Supreme Court. If there is no legal appeal the redistribution will be final on 16 June. The QRC’s final determination can be viewed online at https://boundaries.ecq.qld.gov.au ●

VIRTUAL REALITY ART CREATED 12348803-PB15-17

OPENING SPECIAL

Out of this world art is being produced by students from seven Noosa schools using the latest virtual reality art tools. Create Noosa has partnered with Noosa schools to enable 64 students to take part in creating 3D light painting and sculpting artworks using Google Tilt Brush and HTC Vive headsets. St Andrews Anglican College Head of Visual Arts Ben Hedstrom said he was so impressed with the technology he

was now using it in his art classes. “When the students are creating art in the VR environment, they don’t want to leave it,” he said. The finished products will be entered into a virtual reality art competition, and Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington will award prizes for the best artworks at a special event on 12 June at St Andrew’s new Institute of Learning. A selection of the artworks will be on display at Noosa Regional Gallery after the competition. ● noosatoday.com.au

ANNA SET TO REGALE Writer and TV personality Anna Daniels will join author and actor William McInnes at Behind Queensland’s Words, Noosa’s 2017 Writer’s Festival and Queensland Day celebration. Anna is a late addition to the lineup, replacing conservationist Bob Irwin who had to withdraw from the 10 June festivities. “While we’re sad to lose Bob Irwin, Anna Daniels is a scream, and sure to delight audiences of all ages with her hilarious stories,” Noosa Library Service Programs officer Liz Bleechmore said. The popular storyteller co-created ABC’s first online sketch series Tough at the Top with Melbourne comedian, Anne Edmonds. For several years, she wrote and presented upbeat stories for TV’s The Project. “Having grown up in Rockhampton, Anna championed the stories and characters of rural and regional Australia with affection and humour,” Liz said. “She’ll regale the audience with tales from her work and how she came to write her Vogel’s Literary Award shortlisted debut novel Girl in Between - the upbeat and hilarious story of Lucy Crighton’s life at the crossroads.” “I’ve always loved comedy which not

I think a lot of people may be able to relate to Lucy’s story,” Anna said Anna and Redcliffe-raised actor and writer William McInnes will be joined by Black Mountain singer Jeunae Rogers as special guests at Behind Queensland’s Words, Noosa’s free, five-day celebration of Queensland from 2-10 June. Little Seed Theatre Company in Sunshine Beach has enjoyed some well-deserved accolades recently, taking a very special win in The Anywhere Awards. These are based on audience nomination numbers and comments. Audiences nominated a show, and had the option to state why they felt it should be nominated for an Anywhere Award. Alex McTavish and Pau Osuch then looked through the reasons for nomination and took into account the entries per show. They took into account the audience capacity for the show because an event with a capacity of 20 and less nominations can be just as amazing as one with more votes because it has a capacity of 200. There is no “Best” production, script, direction, up and coming, actor in a comedic role, or bodice in a period drama etal. Instead, each

award is for the entire experience the impact on audiences, the artistic risks and the realised ambition of everyone who created these wonderful experiences - an enthralling story in a location that people can experience no other way. The winners of The Anywhere Awards were announced earlier this week. Within this open aged competition Little Seed’s was one of 700 performances throughout Queensland, and was one of 11 equally placed winners, the cast aged between 13 and 17 years. Little Seed Theatre Company was created to grow stories and people. It is a company where ideas, inspiration and the individual are believed in. It exists to provide young people from the ages of 4-18 with a space to explore their creativity and make theatre. You can find them at Bicentennial Community Centre, 2 Bicentennial Drive, Sunshine Beach or read about their performances online at www. little-seed.com.au ●

KERBSIDE TRASH, TREASURE FIND Bargain browsers were out in force over the weekend as Noosa Shire nears the end of its kerbside rubbish pick-up. Trucks, trailers and even hired trailers combed the streets over the weekend as people trawled through footpath offerings. Motorists were seen driving slowly through the streets and stopping intermittently to leap from their vehicles and grab a precious find. The council’s kerbside bulk rubbish collection has passed through Noosa during the month of May, and has this week reached Castaways, Marcus and Peregian beaches. There is only one week

Fancy some hair mulch on your garden? Use it to soak up oil spills. Surrender Dorothy Hair Salon hopes this will be the future for their waste hair which adds up to about two kilograms or a medium rubbish bin full each week. Louise Turton said the salon was looking for sustainable ways to dispose of their waste and knowing of hair’s water soaking properties they hope to find a gardener or landscaper willing to take their spare hair away. Adopting products that are chemicalfree and not tested on animals were other ways the salon was reducing its harm to the environment. ●

Kerbside browsers busy themselves picking up.

A hardworking Coolum couple in their forties has started their Monday with the dream-come-true news that they are more than $669,000 richer after winning division one in the weekend’s Saturday Gold Lotto draw. The happy winners couldn’t contain their excitement and laughter when a Golden Casket official broke the news to them first thing this morning as they were getting ready for work. The couple was one of six division one winning entries nationally, and one of two from Queensland, in Saturday Gold Lotto draw 3741 on Saturday 27 May 2017. The happy woman admitted receiving the winning call from Golden Casket had been a great way to start her week. “You’re joking! No way! Really?! How much?” she exclaimed when told of her win. “Oh my God! Can you say it one more time? I love it when you say that figure! “That’s unbelievable! I can’t talk anymore. I’ve got to go have a beer!

“This has been a nice early Monday morning phone call!” The woman confessed the couple wanted to buy a new house with their windfall. “It’s crazy! We’ve had butterflies in our bellies about loan repayments, but it will be all good now!” she exclaimed. “Life is good anyway, but this win just makes it even better!” The couple, who wish to remain anonymous, purchased their winning 18game marked entry at NewsExtra Bli Bli, Shop 8, River Markets, 314-328 David Low Way, Bli Bli. NewsExtra Bli Bli owner Sue Stephens congratulated the couple on their division one win. “We’ve been here since 2007, and this is the fourth time we’ve sold a division one winning ticket. But it’s been a little while, so it’s great to have another one!” she said. “We’ve put some balloons and a sign up in the store. With word of mouth, news of the win is flying around!” ● noosatoday.com.au

THE LOWDOWN TIPS … on saving money

Keen to travel? Need that new surfboard? It’s hard to come by a few spare dollars these days. Here are the top ways recommended by Smartmoney.com to save your pennies. Change those small habits. Try and: · Give up drinking coffee or cut down on alcohol - it may sound scary but it will save you money and can have health benefits. · Cancel your gym membership and walk to work instead. · Make your lunch at home. · Have people over for dinner rather than going out and ask everyone to bring a plate of food. · Borrow books and DVDs from the library. Save with a friend - it can be harder to save money when the people around you are keen to spend. Try and find a friend who also wants to save money. You can share tips, enjoy cheap nights out and borrow from each other rather than buy new things. You could even have a competition to see who saves the most money over a set time.

FACES OF … Noosa

WE ASK MILLE FROM ZABE ESPRESSO CAFE TEWANTIN - WHAT’S SOMETHING INTERESTING ABOUT YOU THAT ISN’T COMMON KNOWLEDGE? “I just passed my Australian citizen test today! Most people know I’m from Denmark, but now I’m in my way to being an Aussie.” ●

Q&A

IS ELLA FROM PEREGIAN BEACH LOOKING FORWARD TO WINTER?

WHERE WILL NADJA FROM NOOSA BE TRAVELLING TO NEXT?

“No way! I'm such a beach girl. I pretty much just count the days till its warm again - not that it ever get super cold here on the Coast anyway. You can still have fun in the sun here in winter thank goodness.” ●

“I'm heading off to England next week with my mum. We are going on a mother/ daughter adventure for a month.” ●

Sam Battersby

Where is Sam Battersby from Doonan dreaming of travelling to? “I have actually never left Australia! I do want to do some travelling and definitely want to go to America. I know it seems boring but I’ve always wanted to go New Orleans and see some live bands there.” Have you travelled in Australia? “Yep, I’ve roadtripped up and down the east coast and had some brilliant surfing trips. Ive been to Melbourne a few times to see family who live there and love the vibe down there.” What would you change about Noosa if you could? “The parking around the beach. I work hard all week and want to hit the beach on the weekend but it is a mission every single time. I’m over it. It’s been the same

story for so many years, I just can’t understand it.” Where would you put more parking? “I’d go a different way around it - another bridge across to the end of Hastings Street. From the Woods across to the little park on Noosa Parade. Everything would flow better with two accesses and more parking in the Woods. It’s time.” Have you thought about a career in council? “Haha. No. Not for me. But I do really think that idea would change it all.” What are you addicted to watching right now? “Netflix. There are a few series I burned through back to back - that’s the trouble with Netflix!”

WORKING HARD FOR THE BEST RESULTS BY JOLENE OGLE NOOSA’S real estate scene has long had a reputation as a thriving market, but behind the prestigious status is a band of sales agents helping buyers, sellers and investors boost the local market. The agents are seldom regonised as the media favours reports on the sometimes astronomical sales price or quirky features of a home, but the annual Real Estate Business awards seek to highlight the hard work of those driving the industry. This year, a range of Noosa agents have been nominated for awards including much-loved Richardson and Wrench Noosa agent Kate Cox who is vying for the top prize as the regional sales agent of the year. Kate has been the go-to sales agent for homes from a $300,000 price tag to a $3 million price tag since she stepped into the local market a decade ago. For Kate, the nomination as a finalist in the REB awards is recognition of much hard work. When I heard the news I felt quite humble and even had a little tear,” she said. “It’s nice to know your hard work gets recognised.” Kate represents a range of buyers, known to easily swing between prestigious international investors to young families looking for their first home - a move Kate said is a deliberate way to stay relevant and in the market. “I purposely directed my career towards the investor and owner-occupier and different price ranges,” Kate said. “This way no matter how the market is going I’ll have something to sell. Also the client can start with a small investment property then after a few years decide to move here permanently, and who wouldn’t?” While Kate now boasts a prolific and successful real estate career, she started in radio sales and hospitality. For Kate, it’s important others know it’s never too late to change career or try something new. “When looking back on my career, the one thing that does stand out is I got married at Picture Point Terraces 10-years-ago and never dreamt I would be in real estate at the time,” she said. “A few years later I’m standing on the

balcony of an apartment in Picture Point Terraces waiting for a buyer to arrive, its shows you can change your life and you are never too old.” What drives Kate is her passion to unite buyers with their dream home, taking deep satisfaction from a happy client. “There have been many special moments throughout my career, especially when you know your buyers just love the property they have bought and you run into them in the street and they reiterate how much they love it,” she said. And the key to success? Simply loving what you do. “I love it. I really do. They say you should work in an industry you love and you’ll never feel like you are doing a day’s work again and I honestly feel like this,” Kate said. “I’ve had three careers in my life, 10 years in hospitality and 10 years in radio sales and although I had an absolute blast in those careers and met lifelong friends, real estate for me just fits and what I’ll be doing for a very long time to come if the clients allow me. “Real estate for me is my life now and I am very grateful for what it has bought to my husband Tony and I. I’m also very grateful for everyone I have met and the opportunity to live our life here in fabulous Noosa.” Other Noosa-based REB finalists include Laguna Real Estate, which has been listed in five categories including major independent agency of the year (10 or more agents). Agency principal Olivier Miller has been nominated for the regional principal of the year, Kellie Drinnan has been nominated for both the regional property manager of the year and BDM of the year in property management. Sales agent Tina Tillinger will take on Kate for the title of regional sales agent of the year. Laguna Real Estate principal Ms Miller said she and the team were ecstatic with the five nominations. “That Laguna Real Estate has been recognised for its excellent contribution to the real estate industry reinforces the strength of our brand in connecting with our target market, and customers,” she said. ●

Richardson and Wrench Noosa sales agent Kate Cox has been nominated as a Real Estate Business finalist for the regional sales agent of the year.

PRELIMINARY figures show 77.2 per cent of auctions were successful across the combined capital cities, while auction activity rises week-on-week, according to Core Logic. Core Logic head of research Cameron Kusher said the auction activity across the combined capital cities has increased throughout last week week, up from 2409 auctions last week, to 2794 this week, making it the sixth busiest week this year. “This week’s weighted average clearance rate across the combined capitals was 77.2 per cent, increasing from a final clearance rate of 72.8 per cent over the previous week, while at the same time last year, both volumes (1920) and the clearance rate (68.9 per cent) were lower,” he said. “The two largest auction markets, Melbourne and Sydney, saw their preliminary clearance rates rise, with Sydney at 80.7 per cent and Melbourne at 79.2 per cent, although Sydney, and to a lesser extent Melbourne, tend to revise down over the week when the remaining results are captured.

NOOSA TODAY 29

GROWING CONFIDENCE IN INDUSTRY THINGS are looking up for the Queensland economy and building industry, with business confidence improving during the past year according to the results of the annual Master Builders survey. The Master Builders Survey of Industry Conditions looked at results from April 2016 to March 2017 and found the majority of respondents (52 per cent) think the economic outlook is stable, while 39 per cent said it’s getting stronger. Master Builders deputy CEO Paul Bidwell said conditions in the residential sector stabilised for the majority of respondents during the past year. In the non-residential

sector they improved off a lower base. “The percentage of respondents who regard conditions as stronger has increased. Even more telling is the significant decline in the percentage of people who regard conditions as weaker compared to the previous year. These results are expected to continue into 2018,” he said. The report also found the level of business activity improved markedly, with more respondents (39 per cent) reporting stronger levels of work in progress, while fewer (29 per cent) reported weaker levels. Businesses are also confident

in the future, with 91 per cent of respondents expecting the situation to improve or at least remain stable. According to the report, the south-east has been the real standout performer of 2016. Greater Brisbane, the Gold and Sunshine coasts all enjoyed a strong year. Looking forward, expectations are that this will begin to moderate in 2017 but remain positive. Of the regions, the Downs and Western, and Wide Bay have been quietly ticking along with positive, yet modest results. They expect to continue in this way, without the large swings of the other regions. ●

The future of the building industry is looking up, according to the latest results from the annual Master Builders survey.

CHIPS ARE DOWN No worries - the red-headed deep sea diver from Ipswich has declared that all is OK with one of the world’s natural wonders, the Great Barrier Reef. As an expert in her (former) fish business, she has the scientific knowledge to know a good thing when she sees it. White flesh fish good - therefore white reef good. No worries. Margaret Wilkie, Peregian Beach.

the public launch of his NPA Noosa Council part-funded bring back the fish project? And secondly, just where does Michael Gloster and his NPA stand as regards to the ecotourism significant upgrade within the NPA’s birthplace (the everglades)? May I put to readers: where a supposedly scientifically guided bring back the fish project was to show a lack of fish stocks and habitat loss, then surely any downgrading of a fish habitat area would not be warranted. The silence has been deafening Michael. Trevor Clarey, Boreen Point.

LENSCAPE

KEEP IT LOW Ian Lawson appears to be looking for a job? The Noosa Plan is one of many ongoing plans designed to suit the majority of Noosa residents, with community involvement and business consultation. The same residents who historically voted for de-amalgamation and a vision for Noosa as a family friendly tourist destination that was different to all the other many tiered destinations throughout Australia! Building higher is not what we want. If people want warm weather and more highrise, live elsewhere. Less is sometimes more. Pushing on regardless is not the only way to create jobs and lifestyle options. I thank, like so many others, the councillors who have given us our unique Noosa brand, known around the world for its beauty and relaxed ambience and fought to preserve it. Kimm Woodward, Noosa.

SILENT SCREAM In relation to Noosa Parks Association president Michael Gloster’s announcement last year of the launch in February of NPA’s scientifically guided bring back the fish campaign.

Given our community awaits the Environment Minister’s decision to allow a significant increase of eco-camping in our paradise known as the everglades which involves the downgrading of 2.6 hectares of fish habitat. My question is firstly, in which February of which year did Michael Gloster refer to for

The “Generation Gone“ article by Dom Massoni couldn’t be more correct regarding Noosa Shire’s ageing residents. Youthful permanent shire residents are becoming as rare as Noosa Council’s completed capital works. One Noosa councillor said not too long ago “Noosa is great just the way it is“, and while this may be a subjective observation for maintaining the status quo only, it is certainly an attitude for “Paradise (becoming) Lost“. We need the Noosa Council to keep our youth here with more shops to employ them (a bigger Noosa Civic) and educational facilities (not a vacant decaying Tewantin TAFE), just to name two remedial possibilities. Noosa is a great place and could be even better if our Noosa Council “visionaries“ weren’t blind. Mark and Jan Rose, Cooroy.

FULL HOUSE FOR BIG MORNING TEA BY MARGARET MACCOLL There wasn’t a spare seat to be had when the Noosa branch of Cancer Council Queensland held their Biggest Morning Tea on 25 May at Noosa Boathouse. Event organiser Annie Evans said the Doo Wop Dolls had the audience of more than 130 dancing around the tables and the event raised almost $3500. “It was a very successful and very happy day,” she said. Annie said the event was only made possible by the generosity of volunteers and donations.

FOCUS ON … Health, Wellness & Beauty THREE … How poor sleep causes weight gain

1

It messes with your appetitie Your body releases certain hormones that both trigger and tamp down your appetite - sleep loss messes with those, the new study found. It blunts the effectiveness of a hormone produced in your intestine that promotes satiety. As a result, your appetite can rage on.

2

It makes eating feel amazing Skimping on sleep can lead to increased levels of endocannabinoids, compounds in your brain that are linked to appetite. Researchers believe they work on the reward system in the brain, giving feelings of pleasure when you eat effectively rewarding you to continue to eat.

3

It throws off your gut bacteria Prior work from the Swiss research team suggests that sleep restriction alters your balance of gut bacteria, messing with the ratio of certain beneficial bugs. Just two days of sleep loss mirrored the differences seen in the guts of obese and normalweight people.

Dropping your healthy routine for a while can set you back more than you think.

TWO WEEKS OF LAZY DOES IT When you feel tempted to hit pause on your daily routine for a little recharge, remember that a couple of weeks kicking back can drastically reduce your physical activity - and can hurt your body - according to preliminary research presented at the European Congress on Obesity. Researchers recruited 28 physically active young males who averaged at least 10,000 steps per day, but didn’t really exercise otherwise. They told the participants to cut their daily step count by 80 per cent, or to about 1500 steps per day. After two weeks, scientists noticed some significant changes in the participants’ body

compositions, even though they didn’t eat any differently during that time. They gained about a pound in total body weight, lost about 0.8 pound of muscle mass, and performed worse on a test of cardio-respiratory fitness. They also saw an increases in waist size, central fat percentage, and triglyceride levels. Central fat is related to visceral fat, the kind deep within your abdominal cavity around vital organs like your liver and pancreas. This kind of fat is more metabolically harmful, and can lead put you at risk of heart disease and diabetes, says

study author Daniel Cuthbertson, Ph.D., of the University of Liverpool. Decreases in muscle mass can also raise your diabetes risk, too. It can make you become less sensitive to insulin, he says meaning that your body would need more and more of the hormone to keep its blood sugar levels in check. While the effects of the two-week study don’t seem that major, they’re likely to be compounded if your reduction in activity continues long-term. It’s similar to starting a sedentary desk job, where you stay seated all day, commute by car, and don’t get any other exercise throughout the day, either. ●

Is the V Room ready for Butterfingers next Friday night? Are you?

V ROOM HOSTS BUTTERFiNGERS BY HOLLIE HARRIS It’s official, Butterfingers give you more bang for your buck than a discount fireworks expo! This Brissie band consistently mix up genres and styles in order to create a balanced chaos of hip hop, punk rock, electro and dub all packaged with fun and shameless appeal. Proudly led by singer/songwriter “Evil” Eddie Jacobson, Butterfingers were born from a brazen act of ridiculousness. Playing next week at The V Room, Villa Noosa, you can expect the unexpected at this show! Back in 2004, the band released their debut album “Breakfast At Fatboys” which produced alternative radio hits such as “Everytime”, “Yo Mama” and “I Love Work”. The album remained in the top 10 of the Independent charts for well over a year and gained the band an Aria nomination for best Independent release. noosatoday.com.au

THIS BRISSIE BAND CONSISTENTLY MIX UP GENRES AND STYLES IN ORDER TO CREATE A BALANCED CHAOS OF HIP HOP, PUNK ROCK, ELECTRO AND DUB ALL PACKAGED WITH FUN AND SHAMELESS APPEAL… It was some of these songs that first earned the band enviable positions in the Triple J Hottest 100 - something that would continue every year for the next five years in a row. In keeping with the band's hard work ethic, “Fatboys” was followed by almost two years of constant touring including main stage performances at the Big Day Out and countless festival gigs all over the country. With their reputation well and truly building, the band began plans for the next album and kicked things off with a radio sensation in the form of “FIGJAM”. This new song incited a whole new wave of support and gained Butterfingers their second ARIA

nomination in 2005. Somewhere amid all the touring and recording, Butterfingers built a relationship with Festival Mushroom and then Warner Music Australia. In order to stay independent, bassist and manager Dave Crane signed a licensing deal which meant the band could continue to record and release music via his Valley Trash label with marketing and promo support coming from their new corporate partners. From this relationship, the next album “The Deeper You Dig” was released and the madness began all over again. The first official single, “Get Up Outta The Dirt”, invaded the airwaves and brought the band to a larger audience

which included over half a million TV viewers when the band performed the song live on Rove. In 2007 “Dirt” also led Eddie to win an APRA award for most performed urban release. The album continued to get alternative radio support and facilitated some of the biggest Butterfingers headline shows with sellout gigs nationwide. So in 2007, with countless releases, filmclips, media and live performances under their belts where do the Butterfingers boys go from here? Well... these crazy guys are headed our way Friday 9 June at 8pm.You’re not going to want to miss this! Tickets are online at www.villanoosa.com.au/shows ●

Bernard Fanning - Brutal Dawn

Good Muslim Boy, by Osamah Sami

Bernard Fanning has such a fantastic voice and natural charisma that it can be easy to overlook the uneven output of his solo career, given the classics he had with Powderfinger. While his 2005 album Tea and Sympathy was a hit, follow-up albums Departures and Civil Dusk haven’t felt quite memorable enough to compete with his best works. Brutal Dawn feels like a step in the right direction. Ramshackle and eclectic there is a rootsy folksiness about this album making it potentially the best work he’s delivered since his debut. Songs like Isn’t It A Pity and How Many Times feature choruses as evocative as they are memorable. Brutal Dawn is a lovely addition to his discography; one even lapsed followers would enjoy. ●

This true story is a hilarious and insightful account of what it means to be a Muslim boy trying to be true to his family values, but torn by the normal desires of a growing youth. By the time he is 13 Osamah has survived life in a war zone, and has received floggings from the Iranian Piety Police for his aborted attempts to make contact with girls and to sell forbidden goods on the street. The family then move to Australia where his father becomes a leading cleric. But trouble does not stop. A popular read from the Noosa Library. ● - Review by Jenny Carter, of Friends of the Noosa Library

SIMPLE SECRET TO LUNCHES

COOK

BY HOLLIE HARRIS For parents struggling with the daily lunch box grind, a recent study by Nestle Healthy Active Kids shows that the trick is to keep it simple and get the kids involved. The research found that the biggest concern for parents (49 per cent) is ensuring their child eats a nutritious lunch, while a third (32 per cent) are worried their child will go hungry at school. The Nestle Healthy Active Kids program, developed in collaboration with the Australian Institute of Sport, provides teachers with curriculum-based resources and online recipes and advice for parents to help children live a healthier life. With families settling into term two, the ‘Lunch Box Lessons’ survey quizzed 1000 parents and carers of primary school-aged children to lift the lid on tried-and-tested tricks to seeing an empty lunch box. Nestle Oceania market nutritionist Megan Darragh said that parents can rejoice that complicated lunch box creations are off the menu. “For the fussy eaters and lunch box swappers to the 'too busy playing to eat’ socialites, our survey has found that getting back to basics is back in vogue,’’ Ms Darragh said. Proof that simplicity and getting kids involved is best, the Nestle Healthy Active Kids program recently showed over 3000 children at the Sydney Royal Easter Show how easy it was to prepare snacks for their

own lunch boxes. “Letting children take ownership of their lunch box and snacks is a really practical way for parents to have daily conversations around good food choices,â€? Ms Darragh said. The Lunch Box Lessons findings highlighted some straightforward ways to help get primary-aged children involved in lunch box preparations, including: ¡ Learn together. ¡ Unite in the kitchen. Get your child involved in cooking, they’ll learn important cooking skills which will stay with them for life ¡ Negotiate. Talk to your child about what they do and don’t like about their usual lunch box. ¡ Chat about good lunch boxes your child has seen at school, and ask what’s in it. It will give some great insights into what they might like to try ¡ Have your child pack fruit or snacks themselves. â—?

SOCIAL SCENE

RITA’S TAKE ON ISSUES BY MARGARET MACCOLL

Opinion columnist Rita Panahi fielded questions on farreaching subjects from the United States President Trump to feminism to the booing of AFL players, at the president’s luncheon on Saturday 27 May. The guest speaker didn’t hold back during the questionand-answer format at the luncheon attended by about 70 members and guests while the Noosa Tigers AFL played Bond University. Known for her controversial comments, Rita told the audience she was happy at Trump’s election win which showed how little influence the media really had. The feminist movement had become “toxic” and the booing of AFL player Adam Goodes, Rita said, had been blown way out of proportion. “Lots of players get booed. It isn’t racist,” she said. Rita was born in the United States to Iranian parents who were in the country to study. The family returned to Iran which she remembered as having been a “very modern, European-style place” until an “Islamic revolution” turned it into “a war-torn hell hole” forcing the family to move to Australia. “You’ve won the lottery of life living in Australia,” she said.

AROUND THE GROUNDS NOOSA SIDES CLUB CLASH

POMONA’S BIG WEEKEND OF BOWLING

BY DOUG MCCONNELL NOOSA CROQUET CLUB When a club fields two teams in the same competition, it is inevitable that they clash. Noosa 1 and Noosa 2 met at Noosa in Round 6 and the teams drew with five games each. On the basis of hoops run, Noosa 2 came out ahead with 50 hoops; Noosa 1 two fewer at 48 hoops. Individual game scores: Sally Stopps defeated Ray Powley 7:4; Joan Cordell lost to Ray 0:7 and to Susan Powley 3:7; Sally won against Susan 7:2. Margaret Lewins lost to Sheila Moncrieff 1:7 and won against Julie Terry 7:5. Belinda Anstock fell to Julie 5:6 but won against Sheila 6:4. In the doubles Sally and Belinda played against Ray and Susan, losing 4:5. Margaret and Sher Boyd played against Sheila and Julie, winning 6:4. All in all, an extremely close match. After having been rained out at Headlands the previous week, Noosa 1 played the re-scheduled game last Wednesday. Noosa 1 came away the victors very handily winning 8 matches to Headlands 2. Sally Stopps defeated Anne Somers Vine 7:5; also winning her reverse singles against Mike Owen 7:6. Joan Cordell lost to Mike Owens 2:7 but defeated Anne Somers Vine 7:5. Margaret Lewins won both of her singles, taking Don Murray 7:5 and Chris Elmes 6:5. Belinda Anstock also won both of her singles defeating Chris 7:2 and Don 7:6. In the doubles Sally and Joan fell to Anne and Mike 3:9 while Margaret and Belinda defeated Chris and Don 10:5. ●

STOLEN MOMENTS

John Severson California stylin’, 1964. Picture: RON STONER

- MAYOR PLEADS GUILTY In a shocking twist to an already twisted story, Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington last weekend made the startling and very public revelation that he had wilfully stolen moments while acting as an elected representative. Their were audible gasps amongst the crowd of art lovers, friends, and those who would go to the opening of an envelope, gathered in the autumn sunshine in the lovely grounds of the Pomona Railway Station Gallery, when the Mayor brazenly admitted having stolen moments whenever no one was looking during his six years in public office at Sunshine Coast and now Noosa Councils. Not a slurp on a pinot noir or methode champenois could be heard as the Mayor smiled and even laughed while describing his descent into allegedly criminal activity. While no actual figure has yet been put on the number of moments stolen over six years, the Pomona gathering was presented with clear evidence of a theft of major proportions in the form of a dozen exquisite and time-consuming super-realist oils bearing the Mayor’s signature. There was further cause for concern when, on closer inspection, many of the works showed a callous disregard for community standards in their use of humour, whimsy and, dare we say it, cheekiness, to depict such imaginary events as the sacrifice of bird and other wildlife habitats for golf course developments. Art experts within the crowd agreed that the body of work was of such high quality that it seemed impossible that the Mayor could have found the time to complete it without calling in crook for at least a few fete openings or forward estimates meetings. Others noted that while it was a coup for Noosa to have such a renaissance man leading the Shire, there were limits. As this column went to press the Crime and Corruption Commission had refused to confirm or deny whether its terms of

reference would be extended to include the so-called Grand Theft Moments. A spokesman said: “He’s a what? A super-realist you say. Does he wear a cape? Stealing moments is no laughing matter, but as yet we have no report of such activity involving the mayor. Could you put it in writing please?” Tony Wellington’s Stolen Moments exhibition is showing at the Pomona Railway Station Gallery until 21 June. It’s fabulous and well worth the drive out to that pretty neck of the woods.

SEVO THE SURFER While I’m sitting here having fun at the expense of one talented artist mate, news of the passing of another is filtering in via social media. Like Tony Wellington, John Severson could turn his hand to virtually any creative endeavour, but it was in painting that he found the truest expression of himself. As I write this I’m looking at a Sevo original on my wall, one of his classic depictions of old Hawaii, this one of the Makawao General Store in the hills of Maui. In the shelves beside me I have my bound copies of his Surfer Magazine from the years when I was a correspondent, and nearby is my treasured signed copy of his anthology of surf art and photography, Surf Fever. Hidden under plastic sleeves in my archives drawers are two copies of his original 1960 publication of The Surfer. After growing up and learning to surf in San Clemente, California, Sevo picked up degrees in art and art education before being conscripted to the military in 1956 and stationed in Hawaii, where he used his, ah, stolen moments to make crude surf films. Back in California and about to release the third of these, called Surf Fever, Sevo had the brilliant idea of producing a photo magazine to promote the film’s college hall run along the coast. He was responsible for every aspect of the production of The Surfer, a 36-

The Requisite Road, oil on canvas, by Tony Wellington. page collection of frame grabs, photos, cartoons and surf advice. He printed 5000 of them and sold every one that summer. Unwittingly he had invented the surfing magazine, and next spring, while John F Kennedy took charge of the Oval Office, the first issue of Surfer Quarterly hit the stands. It’s still there 56 years later. I first met Sevo when I was Surfer’s North Shore correspondent from 1978. Having sold the magazine and retired to Maui in 1971, he would still fly over to Oahu to watch the contests and talk story. I was in awe of him as a surfer and a cultural visionary, and in those days it was considered a real honour to be a part of the Surfer family. I’d bought a few of his original paintings from an agent in California, but 30 years after our first meetings, I phoned him on Maui and asked if I could visit. We drove up the coast road from Lahaina to his quaint ’70s-style home carved into a cliff-face with a right point break way down below. By then in his mid-’70s, Sevo

sat comfortably at his easel in a studio overlooking the surf, surrounded by pictures in progress or abandoned for the time being, many of them on rough chunks of cardboard, as was his style. We talked for hours over endless cups of coffee, and I struggled back up the narrow stone steps in the late afternoon with a bulging folder of goodies that would form the artistic skeleton of our soon-to-beopened (and sadly short-lived) Back Beach Gallery in Noosa Junction. If there is such a thing as surf art, Sevo invented it, and inspired truly talented artists around the world, from Richard Harvey and Mitch Rae in Australia to Wade Koniakowsky in California, to Lynne Boyer in Hawaii and Vincenzo Ganadu in Sardinia. He inspired me too, right from the start, publishing my first-ever contribution to a surfing magazine in a column called “Our Mother Ocean”. Vale John Severson. ●

KEEPER EMILY STARRING FOR EAGLES BY BEK PETRIE NOOSA EAGLES It was an exciting game for the Under 6 team who all played a great game against Caloundra Black. The score was 3-1 to Caloundra, with Myles scoring right before the whistle blew. Eagles' team captain Emily won player of the match for her outstanding saves as goal keeper in the first half. Well done Emily! The Noosa Under 7 Gold team played an exciting and equally challenging match against Caloundra Black in an away game this weekend. Once again our team showed their improving strength, skill and determination despite the 2-1 score going against our favour. Congratulations to Zain Liddell, our only goal scorer, who strongly put one past Caloundra’s keeper. A special mention to Ryan Atkinson for his great attacking game and Ryan Curtis for his phenomenal job in goals. What an exciting game to watch as the Under 9 Black fought a competitive match again, against Caloundra Black. With players absent, each member of the team played a great game working well together. Thank you to Myles for joining the Under 9s this week. Score was 4-8 to Caloundra but a huge congratulations to Rohnan for his outstanding play scoring all four goals for his team. His great efforts got him player of the match. The Under 10 Noosa Black team played a fantastic match against Buderim this week, winning 4-0. Keiran Dow was once again the top try scorer, putting away two of the four goals. Alaska Rosenkranz and Isaac Benjamin also scored. Great display of teamwork this week. Well done, team. ●

The Noosa Eagles soared this weekend with some excellent skill on show from all the teams.

TIME TO GET YOUR SKATES ON - FAST BY MARGARET MACCOLL Get your skates on and book quickly to take part in free skateboarding workshops at local skate parks, because places will fill fast. Noosa Council is pleased to assist the delivery of the Revolutions workshop series through its Community Grants program. The workshops make learning to skateboard fun, safe and easy. Run by the Australian Skateboarding Community Initiative (ASCI), skilled coaches teach participants vital motor skills for skating and other sports, plus social and team-building skills. ASCI skate coach Jake Rowlinson, who grew up in Noosa, says he’s pleased to help aspiring local skaters from regional areas achieve their goals. “We didn’t have these programs in Noosa when I was growing up. With a lot of the younger generation getting into skateboarding, it’s great to be able to help them hone their skills,” he said. “There are 332 skateboarders registered with the Australian Skateboarding Federation living in the Noosa Shire and some of the best skaters in the country have come from Noosa. Hopefully we’ll see many more follow in their footsteps.” Workshop dates: · Pomona Skate Park: 10, 17, 24 June · Peregian Beach Skate Park: 15, 22, 29 July · Tewantin Skate Park: 12, 19, 26 August · Sunshine Beach Skate Park: 16, 23, 30 September To register for the skate workshops, visit: http:// australianskateboarding.com/events/categories/ learn-to-skateboard/workshops/ ● 46 NOOSA TODAY

MANGROVE JACK

SPANISH MACKEREL ON THE CHEW! With the weather looking sensational last weekend, offshore anglers were heading out in great numbers. It was all about the mackerel - and there have been some monsters cruising the local reefs. Fishing diving lures around the edges of the reefs has got the job done but the best of the best has been the Spanish special rig, these rigs were developed here in Noosa and are a mix of skirts and flashes that the mackerel can see from miles away, loaded with a large pilchard or slimy mackerel they work sensationally well. The trick is to troll them really slow about one knot or if there is a strong current you can let the current do the work. For the small craft the closer reefs have been producing well with Sunshine, Coffees, and Jew Shoal all reporting good captures. The outer and northern reefs are also firing with Chardons and North Reef also reporting good capture rates. Tuna are also in good numbers with fish just outside the mouth, the usual suspect are there with mack and longtail smashing smaller slugs. The bottom dwellers have also been in great numbers with the most sort after species the coral trout still being taken around Sunshine Reef, snapper are also starting to show up in better numbers as well as better sizes, the Hards and the Barwon banks have been where most of the better fish have come from but we are still seeing fish to 3kg around the closer reefs. Cobia are also back on the chew with plenty of fish taking a slow floater pilchard or slimy, sweetlip are on all the reefs with plenty of fish to fill up the esky. Spanner crabs have been in good numbers with plenty of traps coming up loaded after only about an hour of soaking, most of the tasty creatures live around the 40m mark so reefs like North and Coolum reefs are perfect. Loading those bait pouches with pilchards or mullet should see a result. Flathead have been in great number in the Noosa System. The channel in Lake Cooroibah as well as the deeper section at the mouth of the lake have seen some quality fish landed. Drifting whole fish baits like frogmouth pilchards, hardy heads and whitebait has been very successful. Prawn profile

soft plastics have also been very effective. The Noosa River mouth has also been fishing well for large flathead on the run out tide, live herring have claimed some monster females. For those that love to use live baits, live poddy mullet or herring fished late into the night around heavy structures has been producing the odd mangrove jacks. Fishing the run out tide after a warmer than usual days seems to be the pick of the times to chase these fish. There have been some good whiting taken from around the Dog Beach and Munna point areas. Live worms and freshly pumped yabbies have claimed some real elbow slappers. Bream have been in good numbers and as the cooler month’s approach we will see the bigger winter fish start to arrive. Fishing super light with quality fluorocarbon leader is an absolute must if you want to tangle with the bigger fish. Smaller plastics rigged

on 1/12 or 1/16 hidden weight jig heads have seen some outstanding fish taken in the past. Some popular spots including Woods Bays, Munna Bridge, Tewantin Boat ramp and the river mouth Rocks. For the bait anglers, fresh mullet strips or bonito seems to be working well. The trevally in Woods Bays have been prolific, big numbers of fish have been feeding on the surface and are happy to take poppers and surface walkers. On the beach the new moon last weekend saw some nice jew taken, fresh mullet, squid, pilchards and worms were perfect baits. We are still seeing a good feed of whiting coming from those close gutters with pippies and worms luring plenty of fish. Winter bream and dart are also in good numbers with the high tide the prime time. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! ●

NOOSA WEATHER FORECAST THURSDAY Mostly sunny

CRICKETERS KEEN FOR WORLD CUP BOOM BY HOLLIE HARRIS Sunshine Coast Council’s Elizabeth Daniels Sport Complex is hosting the Australian Women’s Cricket Team this week for their final week of preparation leading into the ICC Women’s World Cup in England. Mayor Mark Jamieson said it was a pleasure to welcome the Australian Women’s Cricket Team - the Southern Stars - to the Sunshine Coast as they prepared for the upcoming World Cup. “They couldn’t have chosen a better place to finalise their preparations,” Cr Jamieson said. “I’m sure the team will enjoy our beautiful winter weather, great facilities and the warm hospitality of our Coast community who are very experienced in welcoming elite sporting teams. “Thanks to the Southern Stars and the highly successful WBBL competition, women’s cricket is at the forefront of a boom in the popularity of women’s sport in this country. The profile of the game, and its players, has never been higher. “For many years now, the Southern Stars have been one of our most successful national sporting squads - and their players are outstanding role models for young cricketers. noosatoday.com.au

Mayor Mark Jamieson pictured welcoming Australian Women’s Cricket Team captain Meg Lanning. “I’m sure they will be well placed to contest the World Cup in England and add to the six World Cups they have already secured.” Australian Women’s Cricket Captain Meg Lanning said the team was really excited to spend some valuable time on the Sunshine Coast as they put the final touches on their World Cup preparations. “The facilities here are first class and the weather is even better, so we’ll be looking to get some match practice in and make the most of the time we have on the Sunshine Coast,” she said.

Cr Jamieson said cricket was a very important part of our sporting mix on the Sunshine Coast. “Our council is focussed on providing developmental pathways for local and firstclass cricket opportunities,” Cr Jamieson said. “This year the Sunshine Coast will host the under-17 men’s national championships for the third straight year and expect to again have a number of state teams visit us for pre-season camps - as they have done for many years now. “This is of course coming off the back of a highly successful Big Bash pre-season campaign held at Elizabeth Daniels Sports Complex in December where the Heat took on the Hurricanes in two practice matches. “The council has recently invested in venue upgrades and we are investigating further upgrades to develop the Elizabeth Daniels Sports Complex into a higher level Cricket Australia-accredited facility. “These facility upgrades represent a longterm investment in cricket on the Coast, including local clubs who use the venues throughout the cricket season. “On behalf of the Sunshine Coast, I wish the Southern Stars the best of luck for the camp and in their defence of the World Cup.” ●
