Town Hall is set to rock... By Jeremy Sollars Warwick State High School’s ’Great Australian Rock Musical’ premieres tonight at the Warwick Town Hall - tickets are still available for tonight, some are still up for grabs for Friday night; Saturday night is a sell-out. See page 17 for more...

Saleyards secrecy? By Jeremy Sollars Minutes of the Southern Downs Regional Council’s Saleyards Advisory Committee remain under a shroud of secrecy following last week’s council meeting where it was announced expressions of interest would be sought for external management of the Warwick Saleyards. As previously reported in the Free Times, the Saleyards Advisory Committee first met in December last year, when it discussed the expressions of

interest (EOI) option, along with the potential demolition of the Warwick Saleyards and the building of a new $15 million facility nearby. Since then the committee has only held one ordinary meeting - in March with a ‘special meeting’ held on Friday 5 May. But the only minutes which have been publicly released to date are those of the December meeting, and when the Free Times asked the council on Monday 22 May why the March Committee minutes had not yet been made

publicly available - and when the next meeting was due - a council spokeswoman did not mention the special meeting on 5 May, and advised the next committee meeting was due “in late June”. The 5 May special meeting was noted in the last item of the confidential agenda section of the May meeting of the council, held last week in Stanthorpe. Further inquiries to the council about the confidential minutes resulted in the following response from a coun-

cil spokeswoman. “Due to the confidential nature of these minutes, it was identified that these would be presented to council incamera. The next meeting is still to be held in June. This is the next meeting of the committee.” Reaction to the announcement that EOIs would be called for outside management of the Warwick Saleyards has been mixed, with many producers left asking why this option would be explored if the saleyards turn an annual profit.

Many are also concerned that an external private operator could increase selling costs for cattle and sheep, which could drive producers to online livestock sales which are growing in popularity. The Free Times asked the council for details of the Warwick Saleyards annual profit, and if the idea to call for EOIs originated with the Saleyards Advisory Committee or with the mayor and councillors. Cultural Trails Casey’s tips

Arts Scene with Sue Keong I took a trip to check out the Scenic Rim’s latest May Studios and Events 2017 art trail on the weekend. Travelling through Killarney and venturing up the Cambanoora (Condamine) Gorge over the 14 river crossings I am never disappointed at the beauty of the Southern Downs, whether it’s the open plain or mountain ranges. The river crossings are mostly 4WD only and I would love to see them stay that way, but the downside of that is the uncertainty of being able to travel in and out by local residents. The number of tourist 4WDs passing through the area also must have an impact on the sometimes rugged and fragile track. A vexing question for the Southern Downs Council and residents. Continuing on to Boonah I found a number of art studios and galleries open with any number of small coffee shops and restaurants to satisfy all. There was a very informative booklet with very detailed information on the Open Studio Trails, and information and maps detailing the art trails. Canungra and Beechmont are featured this weekend, 3-4 June. An easy drive for anyone thinking of a weekend escape and with our Jumpers and Jazz in July festival a little over a month away, it will be our turn to put out the welcome mat. Volunteers sought Volunteers are wanted by the Warwick Art Gallery and Jumpers and Jazz team. If you have an interest in supporting arts, culture and events on the Southern Down now is your chance. Cafe culture sought By Jeremy Sollars The Southern Downs Regional Council is calling for tenders for the operation of an Espresso Bar at the Stanthorpe Visitor Information Centre. A previous cafe privately operated in the centre closed down some 18 months ago, and it is understood that the council has approached several cafes and food outlets in Stanthorpe with a view to establishing a new commercial outlet in the centre, which would lease the space from the council. Formal tenders are now being sought from interested local businesses. It is believed that the council is keen for visitors to be able to purchase beverages from the Visitor Information Centre, along with other local food products being showcased and sold. It is also believed that current volunteers at the centre are reluctant to handle money from beverage and food sales and would prefer this to be done by a commercial operator. The news comes as the council launched a reprinted version of its new Visitor Guide for the region, after a printing error resulted in the first print run of the guide being recalled and pulped. The error involved leaving the name of Stanthorpe off the main map inside the original Visitor Guide. The council has not revealed the final cost of both print runs, but is understood to have denied a Free Times report that it was in the vicinity of $64,000, stating to a local tourism operator that the total cost was just over $15,000. Concerns among local tourism operators continue over volunteer numbers at both the Stanthorpe and Warwick Visitor Information Centres. One operator told the Free Times the Stanthorpe ‘VIC’ is losing volunteers “hand over fist’ and that along with the loss of former tourism managers and marketers after the council took over tourism promotion late last year “it will take years for the region to recover from this knowledge loss. The Warwick Visitor Centre was closed last Sunday afternoon. It was moved to the Warwick Town Hall earlier this year from its former home next to the Warwick Art Gallery.

The Warwick Visitor Information Centre is open for three hours on Saturdays and Sundays.

O’Dempsey guilty of murder By Jeremy Sollars Warwick man Vincent O’Dempsey was last week found guilty of the murder of Barbara McCulkin and her daughters Vicki and Leanne, 43 years after they disappeared from their Brisbane home. A Brisbane Supreme Court jury last Friday 26 May also found O’Dempsey guilty of one charge of deprivation of liberty. Evidence was heard from more than 60 witnesses during the trial, which began on Tuesday 2 May. O’Dempsey’s co-accused Gary Reginald 'Shorty’ Dubois was convicted last November of the manslaughter of Mrs McCulkin, 34, and of raping and murdering Vicki, 13, and Leanne, 11. Two charges of rape against O’Dempsey were dropped last December. The court heard O’Dempsey had confessed the murders to former associate Warren McDonald, former fiancee Kerri Scully and another man he met while in prison. The Crown’s case was that a “suspected connection" between the Torino and Whiskey Au Go Go nightclub fires in 1973, of which Mrs McCulkin was believed to have knowledge, may have

provided a motive for Dubois and O’Dempsey to keep her “quiet”. Evidence was also given by the Crown that people in the Highgate Hill neighbourhood had sighted O’Dempsey and Dubois in the area around the time the McCulkins disappeared and that the two men left Brisbane when Mrs McCulkin’s estranged husband Billy began searching for her and their children. The Crown alleged that O’Dempsey and Dubois lured the McCulkins into going for a drive and that the two men took them to a bushland location in the Warwick area where they met their deaths. Relatives of the McCulkins have since the O’Dempsey trial called for anyone with information about the location of their bodies to come forward. O’Dempsey, 78, and Dubois, 69, were due to be sentenced together today, Thursday 1 June, in the Brisbane Supreme Court at 10am. Both men are expected to appeal their convictions and have remained in custody awaiting sentencing. Updates at www.freetimes.com.au

Saleyards move shrouded in secrecy From front page FT did not receive a response by time of printing this week. The December meeting of the Saleyards Advisory Committee discussed the option of demolishing the existing Warwick Saleyards and building a new facility on land near the Frasers Transport depot, with the committee agreeing the current facility is too small. The land in question is understood to be the 80-acre former Warwick Enterprise Park on the Old Stanthorpe Road, which Frasers Livestock Transport purchased in early 2016 for an undisclosed sum from BWC Developments. The December meeting was made up of deputy mayor Jo McNally, Cr Rod Kelly, Les Fraser of Frasers Transport, former Saleyards management committee chair Graham Kirkland, Andrew Williams of Elders and David McIvor of McDougall and Sons. It is unknown which of these members remain current due to the March and May minutes having been suppressed, but last week’s council meeting minutes note that Blake Doro has been invited to join the Saleyards Advisory Committee, which replaced the former Saleyards management committee. Council says saleyards “not for sale” Last week’s announcement of the call for EOIs came in a media release issued by the council in which it was stated that external management is only being considered as an option and that the current Saleyards is not for sale. “This action (calling for EOIs) is consistent with the advice provided by the Saleyards Advisory Committee,” the media release stated. “This council and the current Saleyards Advisory Committee have supported going through the Expressions of Interest process, just as it was endorsed by the previous council and Saleyards Advisory Committee. “The Expression of Interest process is not binding, and assists council to ascertain best practice in the industry, as well as ensuring competitive prices for buyers and sellers. “The council is keen to understand how saleyards services can be delivered effectively while meeting the expectations of buyers and sellers of sheep and cattle.“ As part of the media release councillor Rod Kelly said that “Council will continue to invest in the facility but cautions that the facility is not for sale”. “An example of council’s investment in the facility is the forthcoming installation of catwalks over the sheepselling yards which will occur over the next few months,” Cr Kelly said. Cr Kelly added that while the Saleyards deliver a return to council, the return needs to be considered in the “broader context of the need to continually upgrade the infrastructure at the facility”. Manager of Finance and Information Technology Andrew Page said in the media release that the full Expression of Interest document would be available from council’s website “from early next week” but a search of the website by the Free Times just before going to print this week was unable to locate the document.

Heritage leads to dunny drama Casey’s tips

By Jeremy Sollars The Southern Downs Regional Council has conceded it will require state heritage approval before it can demolish the toilet block behind the Warwick Town Hall. As reported in the Free Times last week, councillors at their May meeting in Stanthorpe last Wednesday were split over the proposal to demolish the masonry toilet block, which the council says is unsafe and an eyesore. In the absence of Deputy Mayor Jo McNally, who was on annual leave, Mayor Tracy Dobie used her casting vote to break a four-all deadlock between the councillors over the demolition. But the Free Times can confirm that contrary to a previous statement by the council, the toilets are covered by the state heritage listing over the Warwick Town Hall and the council will need to apply for state approval to knock them down. A spokeswoman for the State Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (EHP) told the Free Times the toilet block is “within the state heritage listing boundary for this particular heritage place”. “As such, an exemption certificate or development application for demolition would have to be made prior to any demolition of the toilet block, and the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection has advised the council accordingly,” she said. “To date the department has not received such an application.” The Free Times has also sighted an email from the EHP’s Heritage Branch to one of the council’s planning officers last Thursday, ensuring that the council is aware of the proper process. “The Heritage Branch has received an inquiry related to the public toilets located behind the Warwick Town Hall, which I understand SDRC voted to decommission yesterday,” the email reads. “Similar to the Leslie Gates at Leslie Park, the block is contained within the

Part of our rich, historic fabric?

Queensland heritage register boundary for Town Hall and Footballers Memorial [QHR600961] however there is no information in the current heritage register entry related to them. “As the block is contained within the heritage boundary, an exemption certificate or development approval would still be required for any proposed (demolition). “I know that you are aware of this process, but I thought it best to email in case there was any misunderstanding from SDRC councillors or staff.” A press release issued by the council on Thursday 27 April - at the start of public consultation over demolition of the toilets - stated that: “This facility is not heritage listed, and in fact the Warwick Town Hall Conservation Management Plan states that the brick toilets have no cultural heritage significance and can be removed, replaced or renovated as required.” Nearly 40 submissions were received from the public, with the majority in favour of the toilets remaining in place. One local resident has even of-

Toowoomba’s Russell Street gentlemen’s convenience. fered to paint the toilets for the council at his own expense. At last Wednesday’s council meeting Councillors Sheryl Windle, Marika McNichol, Neil Meiklejohn and Vic Pennisi all voted against demolishing the toilets. In the pro-demolition camp were councillors Rod Kelly, Yve Stocks, Cameron Gow and Mayor Dobie herself, making it four-all. In using her casting vote to break the deadlock and voting for their demolition Mayor Tracy Dobie described the toilets as an “eyesore” and unsafe.

Dornbusch Lane was only signed by the council last month. If successful in demolishing the toilets, the council plans to turn the space into parking for RV campervans.

The debate over the dunny has brought to light some interesting historical facts of which many locals may be unaware - or perhaps need reminding about. The Town Hall toilets are adjacent to Dornbusch Lane, which provides access from the Town Hall car park through to Palmerin Street. The lane is named in honour of Conrad Dornbusch, one half of the architectural firm Dornbusch and Connolly, who as well as the toilets designed some of Warwick’s other fine buildings and landmarks, including St Mary’s Catholic Church, the Warwick General Cemetery, the Criterion Hotel and some notable homes in town, including ‘Avalon’ on Glengallan Road, the Dornbusch family home in the late 1800s. Dornbusch and Connolly also designed and built the Johnsons Buildings on Palmerin Street, with Dornbusch Lane alongside them. Conrad Dorbusch was also at one time a Warwick City municipal councillor. Some in the community have contrasted the plan to demolish the Town Hall toilets with the historic men’s loo on Russell Street in Toowoomba, reconstructed in 2015 and which proudly stands in the CBD as an example of heritage architecture and of visitor interest. *A fascinating account of many of our local heritage sites can be found at www.sdrc.qld.gov. au/our-region/things-to-do---see/ heritage-trail.

New RSL face in Rose City is making himself known By Jeremy Sollars John Gartside has only been in Warwick for a couple of weeks, but he’s already become a recognisable face around the Rose City. He’s the interim manager of the Warwick RSL Memorial Club and has hit the ground running, as well as getting out and about to discover what makes the town tick. John has taken in motorsport action at the Morgan Park Raceway and has been enjoying the odd drive in the country and our region’s stunning natural scenery. He told the Free Times his appointment is for three to six months, and he’ll review the situation then.

The Warwick RSL Memorial Club welcomed a new management committee earlier this year and the committee members - along with John and the staff - are excited about the next phase of growth for one of Warwick’s most popular venues for dining, entertainment and relaxed socialising. John comes to the club after some years working in business analysis and stock control with Certa Hospitality Services and did some consulting work with the club, which led to his appointment. He told the Free Times a lot of his role at present is dealing with “back office” issues but did hint that a new bistro menu was on the cards with plans to

“reflect local produce”. John has re-located to Warwick from the Gold Coast but hailing originally from the UK, he’s not the least bit worried about the cold. “I used to pass through Warwick a fair bit with Certa, as well as Toowoomba and Dalby, and I love the scenery, it’s like driving through a postcard,” he said. “I also love the roses up the main street,” he said. “Morgan Park is just a fantastic facility - the club will look at potential sponsorship of events out there. “I’m also excited about the Jumpers and Jazz Festival coming up. “I did have to laugh - I’d only been

in town a couple of days and was out having a look around and a couple of people said ‘g'day’ to me. “It’s a great town and people are very friendly and welcoming. “We had the club’s race day last Saturday at Allman Park with the Long Tan Cup which was great - the Warwick Turf Club was very accommodating.” John said he’d spent a bit of time since coming aboard with the club looking at Warwick’s demographics and the affordability of dining and entertainment options, noting we have a very high proportion of families with young children. Doing their block Pertaining to the report in Free Times, 25 May, regarding the proposed demolition of the toilet block, my family and I are saddened by the decision of the council, namely Rod Kelly, Yve Stocks, Cameron Gow and Tracey Dobie. Our appreciation goes to Sheryl Windle, Marika McNicol, Neil Meiklejohn and Vic Pennisi, who used common sense, realising the benefit of the facility to the community, and voted to retain it. In late April, council released a statement, which in hindsight seemed already to condemn the toilet block. They asked for public feedback by 19 May, and on 24 May, the decision to demolish the building was made. Why the hurry? There are other local issues requiring more urgent attention. Does the council have a hidden agenda, what do they know that we don’t know, will they spring on us some white elephant that the ratepayers don’t need, but which the councillors might think will boost their unlikely chances in the next election? Most councils are encouraging public transport in order to decrease the number of cars on the streets, but this council intends to pull down an essential convenience which many people require and use, so three more cars can park in that space. Three more cars with the potential to be vandalised or stolen! Three more cars which will emit carbon monoxide pollution to increase greenhouse gases! The council believes our toilet block does not meet crime prevention through environmental design; it could be brought up to design, similarly to that of the amenities near the post office. Where there is a will, there is a way. Gates could be bolted on to be locked at night. The existing building provides essential needs to the community. We have been in the car park, waiting for someone, and you see many people use these toilets. During Jumpers n Jazz, buses park near the library, and when people alight, they make a beeline and queue at the toilets - it is so good to have them there. If these important facilities go, what will people do when nature calls? They will probably urinate or whatever into the shrubs or trees; is that healthy for our town? Many people, especially the elderly who perhaps have weak bladders, may consider shopping online, and not come to town where they won’t be able to dash in to the toilets and relieve themselves

after parking their car. You would think the council would want shoppers in the CBD, especially with the increasing closure of some businesses. So easy for the decision makers who have access to their private facilities in the council chambers, to deny those who need to use the public toilets, and have done so, harmoniously for over 50 years. Our dedicated police people work tirelessly to eradicate the local drug trafficking, and police numbers are periodically increased because of their workload and knowledge that Warwick has a huge drug problem, so, perhaps if the toilet block goes, where will the addicts go, when they need to use, and where will they dispose of their paraphernalia when the sharps dispenser goes along with the toilet block? Imagine syringes lying around behind the town hall. We agree with Peter Kemp, the toilet block could become a tourist attraction, besides, being a welcome sight for travellers. The lovely old bricks could be painted a lighter colour. Warwick boasts many acclaimed artists, whom I’m sure would love to decorate the walls, adding some roses of course. The local indigenous people might like to paint Dreamtime, and perhaps, depict the Rainbow Serpent in our famous Condamine. So much could be done to beautify the building. It is the council who has allowed our toilet block to deteriorate to the condition it is presently in. It is a brave person who admits making a mistake, but we all make them. If the council rescinded their decision to demolish the toilets, they would regain some credibility and respect, and the community would be less concerned, if they believed the elected councillors had the locals' interests at heart. Please keep our precious toilet block! (Name and address withheld by request)

Who's got the power? I would like to comment on the article ‘Turbine power on the horizon’ (SFT, 25 May). Mr Lucas claims being able to supply 100 per cent power for Stanthorpe! Really? When the sun goes down, no power from solar, when the wind drops below 19kms per hour that is required to run a turbine, no power (you cannot guarantee wind, look at SA, they tried). That leaves a massive diesel generator requiring over 1000 litres of fossil fuel per hour to run. How is that green

energy? I guess a person is entitled to their dreams. But why at the expense of the taxpayers, about $6 million per year in subsidies for your unviable project? As for turbines being majestic, a former PM called them a blight on the landscape of this country. He got it right. It is interesting that around the world people and governments are now realising the truth about renewable energy. The US and UK are working to drop their renewable energy targets. NZ is applying much stronger controls on noise levels and operating times the list goes on. Neighbours of wind farms are now talking legal action for property devaluation, noise pollution and negative effects on health. One Swedish and two German universities have now proven adverse affects to human health caused by wind turbines (infrasound and low-frequency noise). Residents are now taking steps to protect themselves or be compensated for their losses, both financial and medical. I believe that the $6 billion this country now spends each year on renewable target subsidies would be better spent on reliable energy research, health and education. Australia once had a relatively cheap and reliable power supply, but not since the introduction of renewable energy targets. Our power bills have been rising at an alarming rate, with no end in sight. Ivan Armstrong, Pozieres.

Bagged out In the article on Limberlost Compost which you published in the last edition of Rural Links on 18 May 2017, we inadvertently provided you with a photo from our archives that appears to advertise another company’s product. We have no business relationship with Katek, and the bags used in the photo were for demonstration purposes only. We regret that this photo implies that we are re-using Katek’s bags, as this is not the case. Ian Townsend, Fletcher.

Bin survey Open letter to all Tenterfield Shire Council elected representatives, executive staff and affected

ratepayers along the approximately 134 kilometres of rural roads ‘along Mt Lindesay Road’. Subject: TSC 24 May 2017. Results of bin survey - Majority of affected ratepayers do not want the collection to continue. It is appreciated that the new council and the new GM have completed the survey of ratepayers affected by the 2016-'17 mandatory trial of ‘along Mt Lindesay Road’ domestic waste kerbside collection and charge. While the numbers presented in the agenda report seem a little confusing, whichever way you consider the report result, the majority of affected ratepayers either do not need, are not using or do not want the ‘along Mt Lindesay Road’ kerbside collection to continue beyond 30 June 2017. Only 47 of the 155 ratepayers surveyed have been reported as saying they want the collection and charge to continue beyond 30 June 2017. As my recollection of the Torrington meeting discussion was that a simple majority from the survey would determine council’s future actions, I respectfully ask if you would support the majority of the affected ratepayers and vote to: Cease the ‘along Mt Lindesay Road’ mandatory trial as at 30 June 2017; Amend the revenue policy by removing the relevant collection maps; and Amend the various budgets where income, expenditure or capital figures are currently included in the integrated planning documents for 2017-'18 and future years. Kevin and Cheryl Jaques, Liston, NSW.

The Southern Downs Regional Council has declined to provide information on a number of items discussed in the confidential section of last week’s meeting in Stanthorpe. The minutes of the meeting show councillors voted in favour of the council purchasing land at Rabbit Road at Leslie Dam, and to offer for sale to an adjoining property owner a parcel of council land at Henry Evans Drive at Rosehill, as well as offering a section of the land measuring 13,900 square metres for sale by tender. Councillors also voted in favour of offering a 10-year lease to the Warwick Drag Racing Association of a 3.35 hectare parcel of land adjoining their facility, formerly a sanitary reserve, and in favour of council providing secretarial support to the Warwick Shire River Improvement Trust.

By Jeremy Sollars A young Warwick-based doctor is working on the frontline in the battle against drug use in the region, as well as helping break down perceptions about mental illness and its link to drugs. Dr Matt Ruhl is a GP registrar based at Warwick’s Condamine Medical Centre, and as well as his general medical duties he provides care for those trying to free themselves from the vortex of illicit drugs - particularly ice - both in Warwick and in Stanthorpe. Dr Ruhl, who has “a special interest in addiction medicine”, sees around half a dozen patients fighting substance abuse a week in Warwick and up to a dozen during his fortnightly clinic at Stanthorpe Hospital. Some patients directly book appointments with Dr Ruhl, while others are referred by Drug ARM and Queensland Health’s Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs (ATODs), and by fellow Condamine Medical Centre doctors. Like those workers, Dr Ruhl is dealing with the disturbing fallout caused by ice and other drugs - such as heroin and opioids - and likewise believes regional centres like ours are significantly under-resourced when it comes to specialised drug counselling services. He told the Free Times that around 50 per cent of those with ice and other addictions have an underlying mental health issue, often undiagnosed. “In my experience, these people

Dr Matt Ruhl treats those battling to recover from ice and other substance abuse. 168971 will self-treat their mental illness - whether it be anxiety or depression or other conditions - with illicit drugs,” Dr Ruhl said.

“But the added issue with ice is that sustained, heavy use can cause schizophrenia to develop over time with people who have had no previous mental health issues.

for our ‘ice’ fight Dr Ruhl treats drug users who have come up against the court system, are in housing, financial and relationship crisis and also those with physical health conditions relating to their using, such as viral infections from injecting. “What I do initially is a psychosocial assessment, looking at their mental health, drug history and general physical health and develop a tailored management plan for them,” he said. “If there is a mental health issue underneath and they require care from a psychologist or a psychiatrist, I will arrange that. “We also look at the detox and rehab options. “It’s sometimes the case that they drop off from seeing me for a time and then they bounce back. “Each time they learn a little more about what they’re going through - I have an open-door policy, and I’m always willing to give it another try, if they are.” Dr Ruhl says government funding for mental health hasn’t kept pace with its growth in the last five or so years, and as far as drug counsellors and social workers go, he says even if the funding was available there’s not enough qualified people to go around, both in metro and regional communities. Dr Ruhl recommends anyone with an interest in mental health - be they family members or employers - consider doing a course through Mental Health First Aid. To find out more visit www. mhfa.com.au

Community forum on ice scourge Federal MP for Maranoa David Littleproud will hold a community forum on the ice scourge next Tuesday night, 6 June, at the Warwick Town Hall, part of a series of forums on ice across the electorate. “As a father of three boys, this menace scares me because I’ve heard the heart-breaking stories of mums and dads across Maranoa who watch helplessly as their children suffer the horrific consequences of ice; it doesn’t discriminate because addiction to can happen to anyone,” Mr Littleproud said. “Whether you’re a user, recovering from addiction, family member, medical professional, involved in community support or law enforcement - and everyone in-between - we need an open and honest discussion, and that’s why I will hold the community forum.” Mr Littleproud said he had already secured the region’s Primary Health Network - the Federal Government’s healthcare local funding facilitator - to attend the forums to make sure community needs were represented in a targeted approach. “There are more than 200,000 Australians using ice, and I believe the solution lies in getting the right mix of services in each community,“ he said. “Because what works in one

David Littleproud. community may not be suitable for another region is why a targeted and engaged approach is so important.” Mr Littleproud said the Federal Government would invest $298 million over four years to combat illicit drug and alcohol use in Australia. “I want to work with the health, law enforcement and education sectors and communities to develop locally focused action plans to improve both preventative measures and treatment outcomes in Maranoa,” he said. “These forums about ensuring the unique needs of our rural communities are fairly represented to tackle ice.” Would you like to know more about these ice forums or would you like to have your say on what topics should be discussed? Phone Maranoa MP David Littleproud’s office on 4662 2715 or email him at david.littleproud. mp@aph.gov.au

Warwick and Stanthorpe are struggling with a lack of resources to tackle the problem of ice in our communities. Ice and its fallout What is ‘ice’ and its consequences? Also referred to as crystal or crystal meth, ice is the purest and most potent form of methamphetamine and is highly addictive. Methamphetamine psychosis - which can last hours or, if symptoms are severe, can last for days - can involve feeling overly suspicious, hearing and seeing things that aren’t real and can result in violent outbursts. Apart from being illegal, behaviours associated with ice can cause significant disruption and distress for families, friends and the community. Misuse can play a role in family dysfunction, breakdown and conflict, financial stress and mental health issues.

Biosecurity Queensland has advised a positive Hendra virus case was diagnosed last Thursday 25 May in a paddock pony in the Gold Coast hinterland. The case was diagnosed by a private veterinarian who is confirmed to have been wearing personal protective equipment at the time. The infected pony, which was not vaccinated against Hendra virus, has been euthanised and another unvaccinated horse on the property is being monitored. Biosecurity Queensland is now managing the case and has quarantined the property. Spokesperson for the Australian Veterinary Association, Dr Ben Poole, said it was critical that horses located in high-risk Hendra areas were vaccinated against Hendra virus. “It is even more important that horses from these areas are vaccinated when they compete in events where there are horses and people coming together in large numbers. It provides a horse health and welfare benefit, and a public health benefit,” he said.

Memorial wall and dais Fund-raising continues for a new memorial wall and dais near the Cenotaph in Warwick’s Leslie Park. The Warwick Community Anzac Memorial Committee has been campaigning for the construction of the dais and chairman Johno Felton said the memorial wall would commemorate all of the conflicts in which Australia has served, from the Boer War to Afghanistan. Community support is needed to get the plans off the ground, as half of the $70,000 required to construct the dais must come from community donations, with $10,000 already raised. The aim is to begin work on the structure in November in this year, so the dais will be ready for next Anzac Day. Donations can be made at the Warwick Credit Union.

facility, it is equipped with a modern horse complex of five stables, large sand arena, campdraft /cut-out yard, and numerous day yards. Adjacent to the horse facilities is the tack room, shed with three large open bays suitable for floats, goosenecks and machinery. Secure water is a feature of the property with several water tanks attached to the house and sheds. A reliable windmill also provides additional water to the complex, house and established gardens. The property comprises a good balance of grazing and cultivation suitable for cropping or pasture production. Approx 170 acres have been cultivated and is currently returned to pasture. Sustainable land practices undertaken on the property through contouring and water management provide good water catchment to the three stock dams and sheltered stock paddocks. This property would be ideal for continued use as a horse complex, cropping or livestock production.

★★★★★★★★

Casey’s tips

★★★★★★★★ ARIES—March 21-April 20

Garden

A financial breakthrough may take place provided you remain alert to trends. A partner’s argumentative streak may surface toward the weekend but your offbeat sense of humour saves the day.

Time

TAURUS—April 21-May 22 Travel is highlighted. The week sees you taking a jaunt to an unusual destination. You might be a little gullible take all rumours with more than a grain of salt.

with Beatrice Hawkins

GEMINI—May 23-June 21 This is the week for receiving surprise invitations. Career expectations may prove unrealistic. Use the week to sort priorities and outline goals. Don’t take romantic situations for granted. CANCER—June 22-July 22 Friendship is the theme of the week as oldtimers return and new relationships are forged. Watch a tendency to overextend yourself. You may be promising more than you want to deliver. LEO—July 23-August 22 Travel plans could require a review. Be prepared for changing conditions. Some advice from a younger relative could prove benificial. Your romantic slump is temporary. Job tensions ease. VIRGO—August 23-September 22 You do more than your share of entertaining, partly because friends from faraway may pay you a surprise visit. The romantic road is less rocky, thanks to you commonsense philosophy. LIBRA—September 23-October 22 A wounded friendship shows signs of recovery, but don’t rush the healing process. Relatives count on your good humour to end a squabble. A dull job brightens dramatically SCORPIO—October 23-November 21 Candlelight and wine suit the mood of this romantic nostalgic week. At work, the friction does not go away and this may be the right time to take positive action. SAGITTARIUS—November 22-December 22 A small but welcome financial windfall may arrive after the weekend. If sharing expenses or dividing labour, be sure all terms are understood in advance. Advertising ventures prove rewarding. CAPRICORN—December 23-January 20 Loose ends are tied up quickly, then it’s on to a new challenge. People from abroad enter the scene. Be certain that colleagues understand your expectations. AQUARIUS—January 21-February 19 A friend’s intentions may be more earnest than you initially believe. An overdue payment arrives, and surprise expenses may prove unavoidable. Financial tensions begin to ease. PISCES—February 20-March 20 Prepare to agree to disagree with a romantic partner or business associate. Work out a realistic health and fitness programme. A cycle of self improvement is launched this week. BIRTHDAY THIS WEEK You are a born romantic and a natural leader and you thrive in the limelight. This year sees you sharing centre stage and benefiting as a result. Spontaneity is important as you enter a key romantic cycle. In money matters, watch a tendency to take unnecessary risks.

This week I am going to be a bit philosophical about the garden. I received a beautifully illustrated email this week on the Seven Wonders of the World, and I would like to share it as all seven can be found in a garden. Unfortunately, I will not be able to reproduce the spectacular photos that came with it, but the thought will be there and you will just need to use your imagination! A class was asked to list the seven wonders of the modern world as they saw them. The majority of the class agreed and the list included manmade structures such as the Taj Mahal, the Great Wall of China, Empire State Building and the Great Pyramids etc. One student hesitated and the teacher asked for her list and here it is. The wonders are hers but the applications are mine. 1. To see...Look around and take in the colour, beauty and form of flowers and foliage. Enjoy the sight of the many butterflies, bees and insects that the garden attracts. Watch the lizards as they scuttle around and enjoy the industry of ants. I have recently seen native blue-banded bees as I have enjoyed my morning coffee. They seem to be especially fond of the “black and bloom” salvia. 2. To hear...Stop and listen to the sounds of birds singing, the rustle of wind in trees and the sigh of the breeze in the tall grasses. 3. To smell...Breathe in the fragrance of flowers, the sharp scent of pine needles and fragrance of herbs. I have perennial basil in an area that I walk past frequently and the perfume is a delight to the senses. Similarly, a lemon balm near my mailbox makes collecting the mail a delight even if it is only bills! 4. To taste...Vegetables fresh from the garden.. nothing like it! Fruit and vegetables start to lose nutrients and taste as soon as they are

picked, so fresh from the garden has to be the best for your health and for maximum flavour. Who can resist the taste of a freshly picked peach or apricot full of the taste of summer sunshine? 5. To feel...The rough leaves of the aptly named sandpaper vine, the silky softness of the lovely silver grey lamb’s ears leaves or the infinite variety of texture of the bark on trees. 6. To laugh... In delight when something new and unexpected comes out and delights all the senses. 7. To love.. Nothing says love so well as a bouquet of beautiful flowers or a single dandelion flower plucked and presented by a small child. God’s love is seen everywhere in the beauty of the natural world. Just a reminder from the heart of a gentle soul

that the most precious things in life cannot be built or bought by man, but all can be found in a garden. Don’t forget the bus trip to the Garden Expo in Nambour on 8 July. It is always a really enjoyable and informative day out for anyone interested in gardening. New ideas, plants and products are showcased along with informative talks and demonstrations by many experts. Also, during Jumpers and Jazz, the Horticultural Society will again be hosting the Garden Extravaganza in St Mary’s Hall. The best morning teas and soup and bread light lunches will once again be available. The range of garden-related products on display and for sale will be extensive, so come and so plan on joining us for something different during Jumpers and Jazz on Wednesday and Thursday 26 and 27 July.

Show picks happy snappers Casey’s tips

Warwick photographic enthusiast Chris Johnson was last Sunday declared the winner at the 150th Warwick Show ‘Emerging Photographer of 2017' presentations, at the Douglas Feez Pavilion. The competition was the brainchild of official Warwick Show and Rodeo Society photographer Storm Lahiff, who was inspired to create a lasting pictorial record of the 150th Warwick Show in 2017, and into the future. Entrants were given a brief to take 20 images which captured the “essence” of the 2017 show, with Storm noting they had to work in a variety of weather and lighting conditions. The finalists nominated these shots as their personal favourites...

Rock(y) run to paradise By Jeremy Sollars Anyone passing the Warwick Town Hall this week will have heard the strains of great Aussie Rock from within the sandstone walls. Warwick State High School students have been in rehearsal for their 2017 production ‘The Great Australian Rock Musical’ and were in fine voice at a full dress rehearsal last Sunday. The musical premieres at the Town Hall tonight, Thursday 1 June, at 7pm and plays Friday and Saturday nights. Follow the story of Troy, Darren, Kazza, and Shazza who decide to get hitched at the B and S ball. Just when you think these ‘working class men’ - and ladies - are going to Run to Paradise, trouble strikes when we find out one of the boys is actually the heir to a fortune and promised in marriage to someone else, and the fun and games begin. The musical features classics from AC/ DC, Midnight Oil, Skyhooks, Dragon, The Choir Boys, Daddy Cool, J.O.K., Sherbet, the Ted Mulry Gang, Jet, Billy Thorpe, Rick Springfield, Divinyls, The Screaming Jets, Cold Chisel and more. Tickets are still available from the student resource centre for tonight’s premiere and limited numbers are still up for grabs for tomorrow night, Friday - Saturday is a sell-out - $15 for adults and $10 for students/pensioners/concessions.

Champions trophy is hot The

spin With Casey O’Connor email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com

It seems almost sacrilegious to be thinking of anything other than Origin this week, but the champions Trophy tournament gets underway in England this weekend. Australia will have to play well to hold on to their number one ODI ranking. With a fully fit Mitch Starc on deck, Australia go into the game with a sensational bowling attack, but it must be backed up by our batting line-up. David Warner needs to fire for the Aussies. The lead-up games have thrown up some interesting results and equally interesting pitches, and one would think are not a guide to how things will pan out in the coming games. Alongside the cricket, the French Open is keeping tennis lovers sleep deprived as Raffa continues his clay dominance and Sam Stosur also shows her liking for the surface. Hard to believe during Origin week that some of the talk has been about poor ticket sales at Suncorp, but with prices for some seats in the realm of $350, it is no small wonder. There is now talk of taking a game off shore - Ron McAuliffe would turn in his grave. Let’s hope at a time when players are starting to flex their muscle about the game and how it is run and the finances that some boffin does not destroy the jewel in the crown. Rugby League is a game of the people - leave Origin alone, and if anything return it to its roots rather than make it a corporate event or overseas sky lark. - Casey (Hope we are singing Maroon praises when this edition is delivered)

TOUGH ROUND Tipsters face another tough week as they try their best to navigate around players returning from Origin duty and how they might perform. Friday the Melbourne Storm representative contingent has been named to play at AAMI against the Knights. Surely, we won’t see an upset here. The second Friday night game sees the Eels and Warriors going head to head at ANZ. Despite their win over the Broncos, I am tipping against the Warriors and think the Blue and Gold army will have something to cheer about. But with the Warriors you just never can tell. The Dragons take on the Tigers again at ANZ on Saturday afternoon and should get the money with Widdop expected to make a return from injury. The Roosters will have several returning from Origin, and if all are fit and well I think they might be too good for the Broncos. (Hard as it is to take). The Cowboys should be too strong at home for the injury-ravaged Titans, but do not expect them to lay down either. Sunday’s game between the Sea Eagles and Canberra is tough, but I think Manly with the home ground advantage will be too good. The round wraps up with the Bulldogs and Panthers going head to head at ANZ on Sunday. I am leaning towards the Doggies. Of course after Origin this could all be thrown straight out the window depending on any injuries out of the game.

RACE DAY WITH IT ALL There was excellent support from owners and trainers for what turned out to be an eventful day’s racing at Allman Park on the RSL Memorial Day card. There were plenty of tight finishes, pre-race dramas and a tip to some real racing history with jockey C Small riding a winner in a set of memorable racing colours. The meeting opened with the running of the Warwick RSL Memorial benchmark 50 handicap. It was an eventful affair even before the race. In a pre-race veterinary inspection, the fancied Cambooya Rock was found to have blood in its mouth and was withdrawn on veterinary advice. Pre Post favourite My Moochie dumped rider Skye Bogenhuber on the way to the barriers and was scratched. The incidents did not stop there; Slyvan Princess kicked the barrier stalls and had to pass a vet test before being allowed to take her place. The race was eventually won by locally trained Whispering Wings. The Gary Schwenke mare started at $4. Well ridden by apprentice Michael Schrapel who claimed 1.5kgs, the mare who had some good

Winners of the Stanthorpe Club championships proudly displaying their trophies after the final round of the Championships were decided on Saturday. form got the nod in a tight finish over Can He Wrap and Coalbank Caviar. Runners in the second event an 1100 metre maiden were better behaved. Oakey galloper La Rana Toro laid out in the final stages of the race, but won by almost a length from Kira’s Beat and Royal Bouquet finish. The Brad Hudson-trained galloper was well supported, starting favourite at $3.50. Toowoomba visitor Spectacular Rock gave his owner trainer Eric Ferguson a thrill with a win in the 1200 metre Benchmark 55. The seven-year-old pipped Karaharaga and Grand Cheval in another tight finish. The fourth race saw veteran jockey Cyril Small of Vo Rogue fame at his best, winning on the Fusi Fox. Trained by Jeff Perry on the Gold Coast, the winner carried those brown colours with white hooped sleeves and white cap made famous by the legendary Vo Rogue. Small who won 22 of 26 rides on the champion does not deny he is in the twilight of his career. He is now based on his Tallebudgera farm, but has lost none of his talent and enjoys riding at country meetings. Wensley Boy put on a bucking exhibition shortly after the barriers opened, and took no part in the race. He, no doubt, will be required to show his manners have improved before his next start. The final event the Long Tan Cup was won by Leprechaun Lad. Raced by M J M Racing and trained at Beaudesert by Kevin Hickmott, the winner started at $6 and comfortably beat Storm magic and Red Bohemia who was held up for a run in the closing stages of the race. The winning rider was Fiona Jones. Race favourite Rockabella Boy who started $2.40 was disappointing and finished well down the track

It was pleasing to see Junior golfer, Billy Webb, return the best overall nett finish and collect the Junior shield. Grant Howard had best nett score in A grade and Lyle Bryant in B grade. Keith Allen was the best nett winner in C grade while another junior Matt Burgess impressed and collected the prize for best nett finish in the Junior division. Darryl Boekholt recorded the best score to claim the Veterans shield. Lyn Ludlow was named as Ladies club champion after winning the gross event with Racheal Hendry returning best nett. Division II winners were Neta Thouard with best gross and Nikki Waterworth with best nett. In Division III, the gross winner was Madeline Jarman with Helen Jones taking best nett. The Veteran’s shield was won by Linda Kelly. In the Saturday’s single stroke event sponsored by Alan Kerr and Dale Minchenton, a countback was necessary after there was a three-way tie at the end of play. Junior golfer, Matt Burgess, with nett 69 was the eventual winner relegating Darryl Boekholt to the runner-up position. Peter Gibney who played his best round since joining the club, also finished with nett 69, settled for the run down. Lorraine Evans (nett 72) won the ladies stroke from Linda Kelly with nett 73. Nikki Waterworth, also with nett 73, settled for a ball in the run down. This Saturday sees a return to usual Saturday golf with the June monthly medal and putting competition to be contested. Tee off is from 11am, and the time sheet is on the board. The draw for the Captain’s Trophy Match Play event should be completed by Saturday, any intending player should nominate before then. There is a sheet for this event on the board at the club house.

WATERWORTH TAKES CHAMPIONSHIP

NEWS FROM WARWICK FISHSTOCKING AGM

The Stanthorpe Golf Club Championships were decided after last Saturday’s final round. Matt Waterworth overcame a one-shot deficit to win the overall trophy and is the 2017 A Grade Club Champion. The result of the B Grade Championship was a real nail-biter. Mike McAuliffe and Lyle Bryant were forced to play two additional holes before McAuliffe secured a well-earned win. The C grade also went down to the wire, but in a tight finish it was Bob Watts who won by two shots.

There was a great turn out for the Warwick Fish Stocking Club annual general meeting on Sunday. The AGM was attended by guests councillor Rod Kelly and Queensland Fisheries officer, Paul Kuhn. Members showed their faith in the previous executive, and it remains unchanged for the coming year under the presidency of Roger Martin. This year, there will be funding of $34,706 available for Leslie Dam from the Stocked Impoundment Permit

Scheme (SIPS). That figure is down about $700 from the previous year. The committee will meet in the coming months to work out the fingerling order for the coming stocking season expected to commence in December. Fisheries officer Kuhn addressed the meeting reminding fishermen of bag limits and legal sizes of some of our popular catches. Anglers are allowed 10 golden perch (min 30 cm), only two silver perch (min 30 cm) five catfish (min35 cm) and a limit of two Murray cod with a minimum length of 60cm. Mr Kuhn also spoke about the white spot disease in prawns and reminded fishermen that green prawns cannot be used as bait in the Southern Downs area and that yabbies must be frozen when using them for bait. The latter are not permitted to be used live because of white spot disease. Heavy penalties apply if anglers are caught using them in this area. He also explained that the herpes virus which has not yet been released will when released take two days to kill European carp in large numbers. The virus does not affect native fish or humans. He also reminded the audience that kayaks cannot be within 100 metres of a dam wall and penalties apply if caught within the exclusion zone. An information evening at the Stockyard Hotel is planned to discuss the proposed new six knot zone at the northern end of Leslie Dam proposed for the northern end of Leslie Dam. The evening will be held on or around 15/16 June - the date to be confirmed and publicised in coming weeks. Councillor Kelly spoke about a new proposed boat ramp for the 15 per cent water level mark and also the proposed new camping area for Connolly Dam. There was some discussion around the Murray cod sculpture which is to be done by Paul Stumkat (Killarney). It is planned that the impressive sculpture will be situated in Federation Park close to the O. O. Madsen Bridge and will be highly visible from the highway. Grant funding of $18,000 has been received the Regional Arts Development Fund. The club wishes to thank the Queensland Government and the Southern Downs Regional Council for the grant.

Alik Gaske was a member of the Darling Downs under-19s squad that finished runners-up in the carnival. day on one of the most famous circuits in the world, the Monte Carlo Circuit at Monaco after starting from fifth on the grid. The result ensures he retained his top four ranking in the series which Sunday’s race winner German Michael Ammermueller leads.

Stanthorpe was well represented at the Darling Downs under-19 State Football Championships, from left, Anika Spiller, Ben Ramatta, Ellice Oreall and Brody Pearce. HAMPSTEAD WINS RUNNER TROPHY With the arrival of members of the Hodgson clan, numbers swelled at Wallangarra on Saturday as a great field hit the course for the annual Frank Hodgson Memorial Trophy, “The Runner Trophy“. Steve Hampstead was the eventual winner and was extremely proud to be presented with the unique trophy that means so much to Wallangarra golfers. Runner-up was to Dennis McMeniman followed closely by John Green, Peter Cusack and Tony Murphy who all took out a captain stakes. Steve Hampstead picked up the only pins won on Saturday at the third and ninth. Hampstead was in good form also holding the approach shot on the second while Jamie Purcell snared the approach on the 14th. The junior competition was won by Jnr who is loving his golf and getting better by the week. Just a reminder that all Juniors are welcome. This week the club will be playing for the Monthly Medal and Putting, sponsored by the Wallangarra Railyway Cafe. A reminder that the Annual Breast Cancer Day is on 11 June. It is a Two Ball Ambrose competition and the cost is $25 per person (lunch included), Tee off from 9am to 10am, so grab your partners and come out for a hit. Golfers and non golfers are welcome for this very popular and special day at the ‘Garra.

CLOSE CONTESTS Eight players were on court for a great morning of golf croquet last week. Conditions were perfect for play, and all games were closely contested. In the first round, Bev Sullivan and Teresa Pyne (13) points, defeated Liz Ellway and Sharyn Roser (10). Bev Sullivan shot a hole-in-one in this game. Justin Liddy and Val Fancourt had a 13-10 win over Shirley Page and Judy Lock in the other game.. Round two games were tight and Val Fancourt and Shirley Page had another 13-10 win. In this game, they defeated Liz Ellway and Sharyn Roser. The second game saw Justin Liddy and Teresa Pyne take on Bev Sullivan and Judy Lock. Despite another hole in one from Bev Sullivan, scores were tied at 12-all at the end of play forcing a tie-break which saw Liddy score the winning shot for his team.

ZIKAN WINS SPORTERS Sunday Sporters were again out in numbers. Phil Zikan ran out winner in last week’s event with Aaron Simmers the runner-up. Figuring in the run downs

were Paul Armstrong and Mark Lynam who also scored the best gross. Jim McPherson picked up the pin shot on the third. There were no takers for the pro pin. Zikan topped off a good day on the course when he also won a meat tray. Ray Thorn was the other lucky winner. Tee off this Sunday is once again between 8am and 8.30am, but this week you might just need your winter woollies if the weather forecasters are on song. WOLVES DOWN 4-1 Despite suffering a 4-1 loss to West Wanderers, last year’s premiers, there were plenty of positives to come from the game for the Warwick Wolves. Playing their Toowoomba premier fixture at Queens Park, Warwick trailed 2-0 at half time. Sam McLellan scored early in the second half, but two late goals to Wanderers gave them a comfortable win. Jamie Saunders was rated as the Wolves best. Warwick suffered a 6-1 loss in the reserves. The Wolves premier and reserves divisions have this weekend off.

FOGGY START BUT GREAT DAY It may have been a foggy start on Friday for gateball players, but when the fog cleared and players could actually see their court, play got underway in what turned out to be a great day. The White team was made up of Joy Newman, Andrea Denkewitz, Margaret Dickenson and Les Williams. In each game played, one person played two balls. White took on the Red team of Bill Golding, John Draper, Val Fancourt, Sharyn Roser and Grace Howard. At the end of the day's play, each team won two games. If you looked at the for and against after the games, it certainly seemed that the Red team had the better day. Game 1 went to Red, 12 - 6 while White bounced back in the second to win 13 - 7. Game 3 was the closest match of the day and the result could have gone either way. White managed a last-shot agari to win 15 - 14. The final game went to Red, 17 - 8. Bill Golding made some great long shots to knock the White balls off the court. On Saturday afternoon, teams were a little lopsided. Bill Golding and Les Williams teamed up and played the Red balls, against Andrea Denkewitz, Margaret Dickenson, Val Fancourt and Sharyn Roser with White. The boys played with great accuracy in the second game, winning 14-6. Game one went the way of the White team11-7 and in Game three, they just scraped home with the score 11-9.

COWBOYS HOME AFTER EARLY SCARE The Goondiwindi Boars hosted the Cowboys last weekend with the A Grade game played on Saturday night. The Boars are always a force in their home games and certainly gave the Cowboys an early fright. They (Boars) started where they left off last weekend, playing some enterprising footy. At the half time break, the home side led 18-6 after centre Carl Clement bagged two of their three tries. Warwick came out in the second half and played a much more committed game. In a clinical performance, they scored 36 unanswered points to run away with the game 36-18. Captain Paul Cantwell and Dylan Galloway were at their best for the Cowboys and led by example continuing the Cowboys excellent recent form. The win made it a clean sweep for the club with wins earlier in the Reserve Grade and Under 18 games. A GRADE: Warwick 42 (Matt Marshall 2, Craig Donn, Dylan Galloway, Jordyn Hogden, Farao Mataafa, Josh O’Brien tries Dan Watson 7 goals) defeated Goondiwindi 18 (Carl Clement 2, Thomas Fitzgerald tries Adam Tribe 3 goals) RESERVE GRADE: Warwick 22 defeated Goondiwindi 10 UNDER 18: Warwick 18 defeated Goondiwindi 14

ALLMAN PARK SNAPS UP TAB MEETING The Warwick Turf Club president Phil Grant has announced that Allman Park will host a TAB race meeting on Tuesday. The 11th hour call was only received by the president on Monday but he was straight on the front foot happily accepting the offer. The offer of the meeting comes as a result of the damage done to the Beaudesert track in the recent flooding incident. The track was inspected by Qld Racing officials who considered that the surface still remains unsuitable for racing. Warwick club officals are not expecting a huge crowd, but the meeting gives the club great exposure and is an added opportunity for local connections to race for some additional prize money. Several local bookies are expected to field at the meeting and an oncourse TAB will be operating with gallops meetings also at Wangaratta Tamworth and Bathurst. A seven-race programme has been scheduled.

CAMPBELL CONTINUES GOOD FORM Matt Campbell continues to impress on the world motor racing stage. The Warwick product finished a very creditable fifth in round Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup on the famous Monte Carlo circuit on Sun-

WATTLES IN UPSET Wattles caught some people by surprise last week with a good win over the Gatton Hawks. The Warriors move into the top five on the ladder and reminded their opponents that they should not be written off this season. Matt Duggan returned to the paddock from injury, providing additional motivation and leadership. The Hawks were without some of their big pack but the win of Wattles should not be diminished by their absence. This was a must-win match for Wattles and they turned up for the game with several layers contributing in a big way to the win. Aside from Matt Duggan, Ryan Duggan, Jarred Bradfield, Jamie Abbas and Matt McCarthy The final score 34-12 Gatton posted win in both reserve Grade and under-18s. A GRADE Wattles 34 (Ryan Duggan, Jackson Green, James Johnson, Josh Lucas, Braydon Wilson, and Dylan Wilson tries Matt Duggan 5 goals) defeated Gatton 12 (Callum Woolacott, Shannon Hicks tries Callum Woolacott 2 goals) RESERVE GRADE: Gatton 32 defeated Wattles 6 UNDER 18: Gatton 36 defeated Wattles 16 REPRESENTING IN UNDER19 CHAMPIONSHPS Local girls Anika Spiller, Ellice Oreall and Brody Pearce played in the under- 19 Darling Downs Teams Playing in the State Championships at Meakin Park in Logan last week. The Championships ran from Thursday to Sunday. Spiller and Pearce (who was a late call-up to the side after an injury to another player) are both only 15 and it was a great experience. In the round robin competition, the Darling Downs girls notched up a 3-1 win over Capricornia with Anika Spiller getting on the score board. The team finished ninth in the ten team competition. In the boy’s the Southern Downs were represented by Ben Ramatta (Stanthorpe) and Alick Gaske (Warwick) another 15 year old with strong Stanthorpe connections and the youngest in the boy’s Under 19 competition. In a nail bier the Darling Downs side lost 2-1 in their final to Sunshine Coast and finished runners-up. A sensational result.
