Protesters take on libraries talk Ron Nelson
Protesters have accused City Hall of locking them out of a meeting to discuss Highton Library’s future. About 40 protesters gathered outside the venue on Wednesday but City Hall denied locking them out, saying the “library closure transition meeting“ was invitation-only for nine community representatives.

The meeting followed the council’s promise to consult the public on the closure of Barwon Heads, Highton and Chilwell libraries. But City Hall employees denied the protesters entry when they arrived at St John’s Church, said protester and former councillor Ron Nelson. The snub left the crowd of mostly-elderly Highton residents fuming, he said.
“They weren’t allowed inside the meeting room - it shows huge disrespect for Geelong residents and is the greatest mockery of our democratic process “These people took time out of their day to hear council’s proposals. Most people my age are at work or picking up the kids from school.”

Top cop, ambo stats zero in on trash TV ice smear By Luke Voogt Geelong’s top cop has ridiculed an TV report that labelled the city “ground zero” of Victoria’s “ice scourge”. “Geelong is not the epicentre for ice in Victoria, it’s just not,” Superintendent Craig Gillard told the Indy. “There’s no evidence anywhere to suggest that. “You can go to areas in Melbourne and it’s far worse.“ Parts of Melbourne had up to triple the icerelated callouts of Geelong per capita, according to Ambulance Victoria statistics During 2014/2015 greater Geelong recorded 39 crystal methamphetamine-related callouts per 100,000 residents, ranking the city 20th worst out
of 79 Victorian municipalities. Melbourne, Port Phillip and Latrobe recorded 124, 97 and 96 callouts per 100,000 respectively. Geelong’s drug use and possession offences during the past financial year, at 346 per 100,000, were below the Victorian average of 406. Supt Gillard, who appeared in A Current Affair’s report on Monday night, admitted Geelong had an ice problem but denied local police were “overwhelmed”. “Yes, we’ve got ice here because some criminals choose to ply their trade in our town,“ he said. Drug use and possession offences in Geelong doubled in the past five years but most of the charges were the result of police work, Supt Gillard said. “They’re police detected offences. That’s an

indication of where our focus is and how we’re doing our job. “I’m really comfortable in our approach towards the distribution and use of ice, and the related offences.” Supt Gillard hoped 10 extra police, and more to come, would help fight ice crime in Geelong. “Geelong is inherently a safe place and even more so with our crime down almost 10 per cent, and the majority of crime is done between people who are known to each other.” Supt Gillard praised community and support groups helping local addicts beat addiction. “Police can’t fix it all. We do all we can do reduce harm but we need support,“ he said.

Poor old King Edward VII, former monarch of the United Kingdom and Emperor of India, now reduced to the laughing stock of Geelong. Well, his statue keeps copping it, anyway, this week overlooking the intersection of Moorabool and Brougham streets with a bright orange safety cone atop its head. It wasn’t the first headwear to disrespect Eddie’s noggin, with garlands of local foliage, empty beer cans and even discarded clothing also taking pride of place at times. He might literally be made of stone but our Ed’s had tough life, starting with his years forlorn in a council depot with a missing head. Then in 2014 he was restored and installed at his current site, only for onlookers to complain his new head was too big for his body. Now he’s the regular target of larrikins with mischief on their minds. As the saying goes, heavy is the head that wears the crown, or, in this case, the safety cone! On a less-celebratory note, a great big upyours to A Current Affair for Monday night’s hatchet job on Geelong. Yes, like everywhere, Geelong has its share of drug abusers. And, yes, they create problems, just like in many other places. But on what grounds did A Current Affair’s outrageous report sensationally label Geelong “ground zero” for Australia’s “ice epidemic”? Official statistics? Scientific research? A vox-
pop survey in the mall at least? Nope, nope and nope. All A Current Affair needed was a tawdry recent report linking “most” of several local murders in the past five years to ice. That’s all. Based on actual experience as a viewer, and without needing this new low-standard of evidence, all Double Take can say is: Thanks for nothing A Current Affair, ground zero for crap TV. Meanwhile, another, somewhat smaller local head was also recently crowned. Jan Juc’s John ‘Sparrow’ Pyburne received a Service to the Industry Award at Australian Surf and Boardshorts Industry awards in Sydney last Friday (pictured). The award was in recognition of the slightly-built Sparrow’s “45 years of innovation” since the foundation of Rip Curl as the man behind the Torquay company’s worldrenowned wetsuits. As another cold winter sets in across local beaches, local surfers snug in their high-tech wetsuits should raise a hot choccy to toast Sparrow’s success, and urge him toward the final breakthrough - a waterproof fly! And finally, Barwon Water has answered last week's question about whether the women's toilets in the organisation's new Ryrie St HQ are fitted with hair-straighteners. No, is the short answer. So just what was it that Double Take's industry source saw in the toilets? Or was he hallucinating. Must be something in the water!

Power prices hit refinery viability Rising power prices are among “significant headwinds confronting efforts to make Corio’s oil refinery viable, according to its operator. The cost-hit comes as Viva Energy works through a $350 million upgrade program after taking ownership of the refinery from Shell in 2014. The company has also battled industrial action, including an unlawful week-long blockade in October and strikes earlier last year. About 700 staff and contractors depend on the
refinery for their livelihoods. Viva Energy chief Scott Wyatt revealed the power-price challenges this week in response to Indy inquiries about the refinery’s progress toward viability. “We’ve made great progress but it hasn’t been easy and there’s still more work to be done, Mr Wyatt said. “We’re also facing a number of significant headwinds that will impact the refinery significantly, such as rising gas and electricity prices and
the proposed changes to fuel specifications. “We’re talking to government about these issues and are encouraged by the engagement we’ve had so far. Viva Energy continued investing in the refinery as part of “ongoing sustainability efforts to compete with international competitors, Mr Wyatt said. “We’ve completed major maintenance, built a new crude tank to improve storage and reduce crude costs, upgraded our pipelines to send more
production into Melbourne, and undertaken improvement works right across the refinery to improve reliability. Viva Energy this week completed a $250 million purchase of Shell’s Australian aviation fuel business. The Corio refinery is Australia’s only producer of jet fuel. The aviation fuel purchase would be “really important for the refinery in terms of securing supply, Mr Wyatt said.
Cool heads in a crisis: Young rescue heroes receive awards and praise By Luke Voogt Bell Post Hill’s Leah Rogers won recognition this week for her courageous triple zero call when her mum Nicole Grieg passed out. The eight-year-old was one of three Geelong girls to win a Junior Triple Zero Hero award Tuesday. “She’s my little superstar, her proud mother said Thursday. Nicole fainted and was knocked unconscious in March 2016, when she went inside after she felt “weird. “It’s all really sketchy, she said. “I was gardening on an extremely humid day. They put it down to being severely dehydrated. Leah, who had a friend over, called triple zero on a mobile but had trouble spelling her address. So, with some prompting from the operator, Leah knocked on neighbours’ doors until she found one home. Nicole regained consciousness as the operator dispatched an ambulance. “I’m very proud of her, she said. “She acted really bravely - (she and friend) would have been very afraid. “I’ve been telling all my friends its important their kids don’t just know triple zero but spelling of their street address as well.
HERO: Violet Hurley with her award. Nicole planned a visit to a BellBrae Chocolatier as a special treat for her brave daughter. North Geelong’s Olivia and Violet Hurley also won awards for helping their mum when she had a seizure.
BRAVE: Leah Rogers receives a Triple Zero Hero award from Victorian Emergency Services Minister James Merlino and comedian Dave Hughes.

ADVERTISING IN THE INDY Ban extremist organisation, says MP REALLY WORKS The Federal Government should ban “extremist Islamist organisation” Hizb ut-Tahrir, a local MP has urged the Coalition party room during one of Islam’s holiest months. Member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson said the organisation last week suggested that engaging in jihad during Ramadan was “one of the most virtuous and beloved acts to Allah”. Ms Henderson raised “deep concerns” about Hizb ut-Tahrir with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull

$85k to buy City ‘carbon offsets’ Geelong’s council wants to spend $85,000 on “carbon offsets”. The purchase would help City Hall achieve almost half its current target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, council’s draft budget reveals. Geelong’s council administrators are due to approve the purchase as part of the budget this month. Carbon offsets are reductions in greenhousegas emissions to compensate for increases elsewhere. Examples include shares of renewable energy projects, with each offset worth a ton of greenhouse gas. Geelong’s council would buy its offsets from the “carbon market sector”, city services manager Will Tieppo said. Council would prioritise “value-for-money offsets, generated from Geelong regional projects if available,” he said. “Market options may include accredited offset
tree-planting programs and purchase of accredited green power”. The $85,000 would cover 42 per cent of council’s target of halving greenhouse gas emissions by 2020, Mr Tieppo said. City Hall was conducting “a number” of renewable energy and energy efficiency projects that would have “significant emission reduction outcomes”, he said. “The City is currently implementing a $1.3 million large-scale rooftop solar program, lighting and heating and cooling upgrades on community facilities and investigating a large-scale solar site in conjunction with Barwon Water. City Hall would continue adding sustainability programs “subject to future funding availability”, Mr Tieppo said. “As opportunities to reduce emissions at source are realised over time, other ways to offset emissions will be needed including new large-scale solar projects and the purchase of accredited offsets.”

Push for ‘model’ mayor By Luke Voogt The Victorian opposition will push the ‘Melbourne model’ for Geelong next week to stop the Government removing the city’s popularly-elected mayor. Shadow local government minister David Davis said removing the mayoral vote did not “reflect the view of the Geelong community”. Last Thursday the State Government’s City of Greater Geelong Amendment Bill, to abolish the directly-elected mayor, passed the lower house. But Mr Davis said he would move an amendment for the mayor and deputy mayor to be directly-elected on the same ticket. The government-favoured return to councillors electing a mayor would bring back “bad old council habits”, he said.
The Labor government holds 14 of 40 seats in the Legislative Council. The Greens, which supported the abolition of the mayoral vote in the lower house, holds five seats. Mr Davis would have to convince all five remaining crossbenchers to pass the amendment, with the office of Sex Party member Fiona Patten indicating she would support the government’s bill instead. The government based its decision on a Geelong Citizens’ Jury’s narrow vote (79 to 84 per cent) to return the council-elected mayor. But Mr Davis said the ‘jurors’ “were led by the nose”, after two close votes either way leading up to recommendation. On 24 May South Barwon MP Andrew Katos told parliament that the jury had no chance to rec-
ommend a third option based on the Melbourne model. But Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins labelled the comments “Liberal lies”. The minister quoted the background material which showed the ‘jurors’ every option in Victoria, including the model. “I gave them a blank slate to come up with ideas on how best to run Geelong,” she said. One juror, Lara’s Mary Budd, said Local Government Victoria the Citizen’s Jury that “the Melbourne model was only available for Melbourne”. “We weren’t given that choice because it’s not in law yet,” she said. “Never set up an inquiry unless you know in advance what its findings will be.”

Four seasons in a mixed-up May UNDER THE WEATHER Lindsay Smail A May with three distinct phases of weather has completed a wet but slightly warmer-than-average autumn across Geelong. May 2017 began with a first fortnight that was colder than normal. Then followed a warmer than average third week before the final seven days finished colder than usual. All these variations averaged out into a fractionally cooler month overall. Minimums averaged 8C, compared to the mean figure of 8.3C. Maximums averaged 17C, compared to the mean of 17.1C, giving a figure .2C below the May 30-year mean temperature. The warmest day was 21 May when temperatures reached 20.8C. The coldest day was 16 May, with 13C. Overnight minimums varied from 3.5C on 12 May to 13.7C 11 days later. May was also particularly dry, with only 27.8mm of rain recorded in urban Geelong. Only 40 to 60 per cent of the normal rain for May was recorded in an area stretching from the Otways to the Bellarine Peninsula. Sixteen days had rain, with the heaviest delivering 12.6mm to Breakwater on the 28 May. May was most-notable for several massive forecast failures. Heavy rain was predicted for 19 May but only .2mm eventuated, while several days had maximum temperatures well below what was predicted. The cause of the failures can be put down to the difficult task of forecasting weather during a highly changeable autumn. The month was otherwise settled, with no strong wind gusts, storms or thunder days but several foggy mornings. Autumn overall was very wet thanks to above average rain in March and April. Almost all places recorded well over double the seasonal average. However, owing to a warm March and April, temperatures were slightly above average. * Lindsay Smail operates Geelong Weather Services

PUBLIC NOTICE CI020617-R-INDY
Protesters kept out of library talks From page 1 Highton Library campaigner Jacqui Bennett backed the lock-out claims, saying council’s three administrators should begin consulting in earnest. “Funny they should say further consultation as there has been no community consultation to date.” Chilwell Library campaigner Lynne Dowling, who attended the protest, blasted the “secretive nature” of the meeting. “The crowd wanted to attend and listen to the discussion which was not allowed by the council officers.” Mr Nelson said the meeting delivered “nothing of substance” despite the long-overdue consultation. “I believe this whole council process of justifying their decision after the fact really stinks.” City Hall sent surveys to residents registered at Highton library but only one was among the 40 library users at Wednesday’s protest, Mr Nelson said.
“This is the craziest interpretation of community consultation I’ve ever heard. (It) demonstrates the huge inaccuracies of statistics gathered by Geelong Regional Library Corporation.” Mr Nelson said the public was unlikely to ever hear directly from the people behind the library closures - GRLC chief Patti Manolis and the administrators. But City Hall investment and attraction director Brett Luxford said the administrators were eager to listen, “which is why a three-month extension was given to both Highton and Chilwell libraries”. He denied City Hall barred anyone from the meeting, which “was never designed to be public.” “Misinformation about the meeting was spread through parts of the community and it had wrongly been reported in the media that the meeting was to be public,” Mr Luxford said. City Hall brought Wednesday’s small group together to examine alternatives and “what types of transition support may be required” after the library closed, he said.

Construction for Revitalising Central Geelong’s Laneways Project is underway. We’re enhancing West End, along Little Malop Street, James Street and Shorts Place, between Moorabool and Gheringhap Streets. There’ll be new streetscapes, alfresco spaces, seating, more trees and plants, public art and improved lighting to enhance this vibrant precinct.
All businesses will be open during works. Pedestrians are encouraged to continue to shop, dine and wander through the area as it transforms. The area will only be open to delivery and resident vehicles, so we encourage customers to park in nearby streets. The free Love Central Geelong App lists all parking in the CBD and availability in real time.

After surviving six years exile in a Rwandan refugee camp, Norlane’s Alphonse Mulashe has won Victoria’s top youth volunteer award. “It was a really big surprise for me,” the Congolese refugee told the Indy on Monday. “I was proud of myself and my family was proud of me, because I never thought I could get this far.” Alphonse took home the Victorian Young Achiever Awards’ volunteer prize Friday night, for his work in the Congolese community and with Geelong’s youth. The 18-year-old volunteered as a supervisor at the Lions Licola Camp for disadvantaged youth and an adventure camp for refugee children. “It was fun just being out with the kids and getting to know them,” he said. Since arriving in Geelong in 2010 he has supported his community year-round by volunteering for events like Pako Festa and Congolese Independence Day. But life in Geelong is a far cry from the Rwandan refugee camp that his family fled to when he was six. Alphonse’s father died when he was nine and as eldest son he had to walk several kilometres each day to find food and wood for cooking. “Life was hard because my Dad - who provided food, shelter and other stuff - was gone,” he said. “In my culture my dad left his role for me, to look after the family. “It’s very different living in Australia because everything is where you are. You don’t have to go look for it.” He would buy batteries and connect wires
throughout the house to provide meagre lighting for his family. “There was no electricity so at night you had to make sure there is a little bit of light in your house,” he said. “I was really good at it when I was in the camp.” Alphonse put his skills to good use in Australia, earning a Certificate II in Electrical. But after finishing Year 12 he became a roof plumber’s apprentice instead. “It’s easier and more fun,” he said. “And the people that I work with and my boss are really good too.” He has continued his work volunteering for his church choir and Diversitat programs for refugee children. “We help them get their heads around what the kids are like here,” he said. “Many of them just come to Australia and sit at home or only hang out with other people of their culture.” As a singer, drummer and keyboard player, Alphonse has performed in Melbourne and at Geelong After Dark, and he is working to form a youth theatre company. He also played for the Bell Park Rangers soccer team for three years and was captain in 2014. “I’m very happy living here with my family,” he said. Alphonse still helps look after his three younger siblings and his older sister, who has a disability. He hopes for an even better life in Australia but not for himself. “My dream is to buy my mum a house for all the work she has done for us. And look after her when she’s old.” 9 GEELONG INDY Friday, 2 June, 2017

DELICATE: A firefighter rescues the first of three men trapped in a cherry picker on Wednesday morning. 168969
Three rescued after crane topples By Luke Voogt Firefighters rescued three men stranded about 10 metres off the ground in a cherry picker outside the new Barwon Water headquarters Wednesday morning 30 May. Geelong CFA operations manager Mark Sinkinson said the work platform fell “at least of couple of metres” after the platform truck tipped to its right, about 8.45am. CFA crews secured the three men from the roof of the building, located near the corner of Ryrie and Fenwick streets. “One of our concerns was if the basket fell any further the gentlemen would hit the ground,” Mr Sinkinson said. “We went up with our roping crews and dropped some lines over the edge of the building. “That was to hook them onto their harnesses so if the worst case scenario happened and the crane did fail the men would be restrained from falling.” A lone firefighter walked the men one at a time down a ladder extended from a CFA truck.
“That was a bit of delicate operation,” Mr Sinkinson. “The immediate area’s been evacuated in case the crane fell even further.” Paramedics treated one man for hand injuries, while the other two men were uninjured but “understandably shaken” after the fall, he said. “I’m sure there’s been a few scary moments for the three gentlemen involved.” Police closed Ryrie Street from Fenwick Street to Moorabool Street as a large crowd of workers gathered to watch the rescue. Mr Sinkinson praised the emergency services for their “co-ordinated”response. “It was a fantastic effort all round by all agencies.” Recently, career firefighters conducted high-angle training using the Simonds Stadium light towers. Mr Sinkinson said the training had become integral for local firefighters given the number of tall buildings under construction in Geelong. Worksafe investigators remained on the scene after emergency services concluded their operations, a spokesperson said.
“Sugar-sweetened beverages” face bans at council facilities in line with State Government’s Healthy Choices policy. The bans at venues including leisure centres and cultural facilities would extend to sports drinks as well as fruit juice and flavoured milk unless provided in “small serves”, according to City Hall. Council’s draft budget allocated $150,000 to develop a plan for the bans during the next financial year, including a dedicated staff member working 60 per cent of full-time hours. Council would also development a Healthy Choices kit for sports clubs alongside the drinks bans, budget documents said. “The majority” of council-operated venues sold sugar-sweetened drinks, the City said in a statement to the Indy. “The Healthy Choices strategy is in development and is proposed to be a two-phased approach with reduction of sugar sweetened beverages in the first year in line with the Healthy Choices Victorian Government guidelines,”
the City said. “These guidelines include a reduction of sugar-sweetened beverages to less than 20 per cent of the menu and display in a food outlet. The following year (2018) would include removal of sugarsweetened beverages where appropriate.” Barwon Health began removing “sugar-carbonated drinks" from its vending machines and cafeterias this week. “We’ve been working with our contractors for some time to achieve this, and we’re very pleased to make the change to take a stand for better health in the Geelong community,” chief operating officer Robyn Hales said. Barwon Health’s vending machines and cafeterias would now offer “a variety of juices and sugar-free soft drinks", she said. The council and Barwon Health bans follow similar action at local schools against the content of students’ lunch boxes. The Indy reported a year ago that 11 primary schools had joined Barwon Health's H2Only campaign against “sugary drinks”.
Charges over Belmont fatal crash Police have charged an unlicensed man over a deadly crash at Belmont on Sunday. A 59-year-old man from Highton died when a Holden Commodore the man was driving struck him on Barrabool Rd about 11.30am. Police alleged the Commodore crossed to the other side of Barrabool Rd before hitting two cars. The Commodore clipped a Hyundai then collided head-on with the victim's Mercedes sedan, which was driving in the opposite direction, Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives said
Paramedics took the Mercedes driver to hospital but he died on Sunday afternoon. Police charged the 42-year-old Geelong man with dangerous driving causing death, conduct endangering life, dangerous driving, careless driving and driving while unlicensed. He was remanded to appear at Geelong Magistrates’ Court on 30 May. Paramedics took a front-seat passenger of the Mercedes, a 53-year-old man from Highton, to hospital with chest injuries.

Letters Barron marriage not for all Alan Barron’s comments on same sex marriage (Letter, 26 May) were ridiculous. His statement about marriage being about procreation and nurturing children was small-minded. What about all the straight men and women that can’t have children? Are they allowed to marry? What happens to orphans? Mr Barron obviously has nothing better to do than constantly write letters about things he thinks he understands. Does it make him feel secure within himself? Gay people have the right to be treated the same as everyone else. Ken Hull East Geelong
Shameful story of our libraries I attended 23 May’s council meeting where representatives of each of the three libraries targeted for closure spoke passionately, directing relevant questions to the administrators. What should have been an educational evening of witnessing democratic processes in action was instead a lesson in bullying for the many children who attended. They saw adults from their school communities treated shamefully. Their questions went unanswered and pleas to extend question time were disregarded. Little Red Riding Hood was cast aside and the big bad wolf held sway. Or were the administrators reading Snow White, because they offered a poisoned apple in the form of a time extension before our libraries’ demise. As we filed out children were crying and distressed - they did not like storytime that night! Professor Frank Oberklaid, head of Murdoch Childrens’ Research Institute, is concerned that one in five Australian children start school developmentally vulnerable or at risk. “The foundations of literacy are laid down well before kids get to school,” he says. “Language develops naturally. Reading doesn’t. You have to be taught.” The three libraries all meet this need as places for adults to read to young children and as local hubs for parents, grandparents and grandchildren to walk to and read together.
Buckets & Bouquets Bouquets to three delightful girls working in Geelong Botanical Gardens Tea House. Their service was great. Our two-year-old grandson loved the fuss they made over him. The coffee and food was delicious. We had a very enjoyable experience. Happy Popnan, Belmont Bouquets to the service I received after a minor car accident, from the call to the insurance company to picking up my car at Bannockburn Panels. We often complain about rudeness and indifferent service, but I have but nothing but praise for all involved in my experience. EC, St Albans Park
How can a council that spends so much of our money on attention-seeking, entrepreneurial ventures fail to find the funds to maintain libraries? I laud the development of new libraries but not at the expense of older, established libraries. Janet Cirillo Highton
Guided by vision of libraries Geelong’s council administrators believe they are making a financially prudent decision in closing three highly valued local libraries to build new ones in growth areas but they have completely missed the point. As many have pointed out, why should social equity lead to the closure of established community facilities supported by ratepayers for decades? Should the budget instead add facilities in growth areas while retaining and maintaining established resources? Many residents of inner suburbs will now lose library services so others in outer suburbs can have access. Whichever way it’s looked at, it’s not equitable. A 2016 Guidelines, Standards and Outcome Measures for Australian Public Libraries “highlights the importance of public libraries having a clear strategic focus on their community and its service
Buckets to LM (Buckets and Bouquets, 26 May). Guns and weapons are vital to mankind’s success. Without them we would never have made it to the top of the food chain. How would you cut your bread or spread butter without a knife? Pull your head in. Vigilante, East Geelong

needs.” The problem is that the board of Geelong Regional Library Corporation (GRLC) did not use its own guidelines in recommending closure of the libraries. The vision of Geelong’s council and GRLC for “21st Century, highly sophisticated libraries at a district level” is not supported by their own guidelines. The flawed vision has produced the short-sighted decision to close the libraries. The guidelines describe a library as “a place where people come together to meet, to connect with one another … to create, and to celebrate their community. The library can be a place where different people come to read, relax, learn, study and/or work ... staffed by people who are there to help”. Chilwell, Highton and Barwon Heads libraries beautifully meet this vision. Hilary Hoevenaars Newtown
Courting same-sex marriage I commend Margaret Court for defending the traditional concept of marriage and for opposing the personal preferences of the head of Qantas. The reaction to her remarks is another example of homophobia phobia, which dominates the media.

Email: editorial@geelongindependent.com.au 78 Moorabool St, Geelong, 3220 Fax: 5249 6799 It is interesting that, according to the largest Australian survey by Anthony Smith and Paul Badcock, only 1.6 per cent of men identify as gay and only .8 per cent of women identify as lesbian but they have been able to commandeer so much political debate. Except for very rare exceptions, humans are born with either XY or XX chromosomes, the obvious purpose being the reproduction of our species. Any contrary definition of sexuality or the purpose of marriage is a futile attempt for personal pleasure. Pastor Frank Lowry Aberdeen St Baptist Church
Frackers revitalising US economy Ralph Huisman (Letters, 26 May) opposed fracking, listing what he claimed were resultant problems. But having solved these problems, the USA has recently witnessed a dramatic turnaround in its economy. Thanks to fracking, gas production is up 33 per cent since 2005 and oil 30 per cent since 2008. America is shortly expected to overtake Russia and Saudi Arabia to become the world’s largest producer of oil and gas. Long the world’s largest energy importer, and long too dependent on Arab oil, the US is now even thinking of exporting oil. This has enormous geopolitical implications. In 2014 OPEC abruptly dropped the price of its oil, benefiting us all. Gas prices have dropped two thirds in the US since 2008, leading to a revitalising of its economy. For example, more than 100 new energyhungry industrial plants have been announced in the Gulf Coast region alone, and since 2003 another 400,000 direct jobs have been created, plus two million in other industries. By substituting gas for coal in electric power plants, fracking has led to a greater reduction in US carbon emissions than all the world’s wind turbines and solar panels combined. Victorian gas and electricity prices are increasing because timid New South Wales and Victorian governments, frightened by green activists, stop us learning from the US turnaround, unlike Queensland where gas is booming. With Geelong rapidly losing its legacy industries, it’s high time we took another look. Lindsay Brown Grovedale

FINALLY FRIDAY
Holly DNA is in a rockin’ Robin By Luke Voogt Docklands’ Scot Robin says Buddy Holly is in his “DNA”. Robin first played the rock and roll legend in the Australian version of a play out of London’s West End in 1991. “I’ve been doing theatre since I was a kid,” the 47-year-old told the Indy on Monday. “Buddy was my first role in a major production.” Robin travelled Australia with the play for two years. But after a call from a producer, he started performing solo as Holly, which he has done ever since. “I had no idea it would last this long,” he said. “I’ve been everywhere man! “It’s been non-stop for 26 years, and I’m not slowing down. If anything, it’s getting busier, it’s been insane.” His love of the iconic rocker started well before the West End production. “My father was a huge Buddy fan, and I grew up with his music as far as I can remember,” he said. “My favourite song is That’ll Be The Day - every person knows it and just waits for it.” In September 2004 Scot performed in Holly’s home town of Lubbock, Texas, where he met with Buddy’s family and widow Maria Elena Holly. About a year ago, he joined the Robertson Brothers’ tribute act to the Everly Brothers. He said he and the brothers had become instant mates. “It’s like we’re having a big boy’s weekend every
weekend. They’re brilliant - they really love what they do and it shows in their performing.” The Robertson brothers are perhaps best known for their version of the Home and Away theme, which played before the show from 2000 to 2006. “It’s the first time I teamed up with another tribute show,” he said. “Adding the Everly Brothers has just been the perfect match. If you like the Everly Brothers you’ll like Buddy Holly - everybody loves it." “The harmonies can only be sung one way and the Robertson brothers have nailed them.” Robin has played in Geelong five times, but next Saturday's performance at Geelong Performing Arts Centre will be his first with the brothers. “It’s a great theatre. I’m up first, I set ’em up and the Robertsons knock ’em over.” Robin said playing in a tribute was all about respecting the original fans. “It was their music and they know every note. We’ve put a lot of attention to detail into the show because you have to get it right. “That’s the thing with legends, tribute shows offer fans that wonderful thing where they can live a special time in their lives. I want to see them in the theatre for a great night of rock and roll.” After playing Holly for so long, Robin reckoned he struggled to impersonate anyone else. “If I sing any other song, it’s just like Buddy singing another song.” (RIGHT) IT'S A-GETTIN' CLOSER: Scot Robin as Buddy Holly.

Portarlington is a long way from the streets of Dublin where Darren Gallagher grew up. The Ocean Grove musician, better known as Gallie, will bring his rootsy storytelling to the National Celtic Festival for the first time next weekend. “I’m very much looking forward to it,” the 47-year-old said. “I’m revisiting some old songs and writing a new album.” Gallagher will play a bunch of new songs about his homeland at the festival, which starts on Friday 9 June. “I’m going to stretch my arm on the Celtic stuff,” he said. “It’s great because I’ll have audience who will want to hear Celtic stories.” Gallagher grew up in Ireland when unemployment was at 19 per cent. “I remember the queues on Wednesday when you went to collect the dole,” he said. So Gallagher pursued music at local pubs. “I was playing in a lot of bands at the time,” he said. “It’s better to be an unemployed musician than an unemployed bricklayer.” But in the mid-90s he received a call from the Canary Islands which changed everything. “There was an Irish guy who owned a bar there,” he said. Gallagher and some band mates lapped up the blue skies, blues seas and white sands on the island paradise off the west of Africa. “It was like a movie, it was as far away from reality as you could possibly get,” he said. Soon after he got a new gig in a skiing village in Austria and phoned his band mates to join him. “Next thing we know we were skiing down mountains,” he said. “This was winning the lotto for us.” “I just spent 20 years travelling around the world, surfing or skiing during the day and play-

Homage to Dylan hits right notes By Luke Voogt ROLLING STONE: Jeff Jenkins plays the music of Bob Dylan.
wrote them, Jenkins said. “We put a lot of songs in that were big for other people, but were actually written by Bob Dylan.” Jenkins brings his musical theatre experience to the show. In the '80s he was in the original Australian production Cats and other iconic plays in Melbourne. “I just wanted to marry together all of my
skills,” the 58-year-old said. Bob Dylan still performs at the age of 76. But most of the “mercurial” artist’s recent shows would include current work, obscure songs and “just a few of his hits”, Jenkins said. “(A Dylan show) will either be one of the greatest things you ever see or one the worst. I think we’re putting on the Bob Dylan show that
people really want to see.” Jenkins performs in Geelong for the first time his life when he takes to the stage at Geelong Performing Arts Centre on 17 June. “I’ve got quite a few friends down that way in Barwon Heads - so I’m looking forward to it,” he said.

Singer-songwriter Jeff Jenkins was never a “huge fan” of Bob Dylan but after almost every show he would get the same response. “Someone would come up and say ’geez you sound like Bob Dylan’,” the Yarra Valley local told the Indy Monday. “In my head, when I was singing I always thought I sounded like Bruce Springsteen, but clearly not.” Jenkins had been playing his own music across the valley for 15 years. But two years ago, he decided to create a “homage” to Dylan. “I read everything I could get my hands on about Dylan and pulled all the fascinating stories together,” he said. “Dylan is an intriguing subject because of his constant evolution as an artist, immense catalogue of work and his personality; he’s a man who always marches to the beat of his own drum.” In DYLANesque Jenkins tells the revered songwriter’s journey from hitchhiking to New York with $10 in his pocket to winning the Nobel Prize for literature. “I’m basically being me talking about Bob Dylan and sounding like him when I play his songs,” he said. “It’s kind of turning people on to Bob Dylan, his music and his life.” “It’s a fascinating journey that he had. We don’t just go bang, bang, bang and knock out 40 songs.” He follows Dylan’s career, relationships and break ups and his profound impact on pop culture - with “a little artistic licence”. “He’s resisted being pigeon-holed his whole life,” he said. “Everyone who ever wrote a song owes something to Bob Dylan.” Many know Jimmi Hedrix’s All Along the Watchtower or Eric Clapton’s and Guns N’ Roses’ Knocking on Heaven’s Door, but few realise Dylan

An old favourite
How? WELL-TUNED: The first International Harvester Choir outside their workplace at Northshore in 1943. Jeanette’s expertise - and her Welsh heritage - has taken the International Harvester Choir in new directions. The male chorus now has a repertoire that ranges from the lusty Stout Hearted Men and Ghost Riders In The Sky, to the delicate Bring Him Home and the Welsh classic Myfanwy. The choir will bring these songs, and more, to their next concert at Drysdale’s Potato Shed for the Morning Showtime series. Produced and introduced by Colin Mockett, Geelong’s Glorious Male Voice Choir begins 10.30am on 6 June. “It promises to be a heritage-listed treat,” Mr Mockett said.

Geelong’s International Harvester Choir - Victoria’s oldest surviving male voice chorus - will perform in Drysdale next Tuesday. The choir began in 1943, as the men of North Shore agricultural machinery factory made mines, vehicles and aircraft for the Allied Forces in WWII. The men sang as they worked, and 25 workers in the factory tool room started their own choir. They rehearsed in the canteen and sang at community events, concerts, gatherings and celebrations. They sang when the war ended and when the factory returned to making tractors. The choir was still meeting and singing, even through hard times in the 70s, when drought hit Australian farms and government cut tariffs to allow cheap imported machinery. The men continued to sing, even after their factory closed in 1982. Initially, the choir had remained together to meet its community bookings, but then the men stayed together for the joy of singing. In February 2015, the International Harvester Choir broke with tradition by appointing its first female director Jeanette Johns. Ms Johns founded Geelong Ladies Welsh Choir and was its long-time musical director.

From beads and sweets to picture frames and bikes, High Street is the multishop stop for a unique gift. Jen’s place offers exactly that - with its baby gifts, children’s toys and books, scarves, handbags, jewellery, home-wares, throw rugs and cards for all occasions. “It’s not what you’d find everywhere,” said store owner Jen. Open six days a week, the store has a free gift-wrapping service with the option to donate to Geelong’s Give Where You Live. It’s also the only outlet for Bendigo Woolen Mills yarn and needles in Geelong. While there why not grab some beads from Rummage and Craft? The shop stocks semi-precious stones, and Japanese, crystal and craft beads. The shop’s staff can plan a beading project, offer advice on made-to-order products and repair jewellery. Next stop is Yummy Mummy where shoppers can get their sweet tooth on. The store has party bags made to order, gluten free pick ‘n’ mix and a sugar-free selection. New Zealand, British and Dutch lollies, USA candy and drinks, old fashioned lollies and candy buffets are also available. Shoppers can frame treasured memories or bring photos to life at Wallwolf. Connected to community Sea Views Manor is all about keeping residents connected with their community, says the home’s Glenn Chidzey. “They have led long and full lives but they still thirst for things to do,” the diversional therapist says. Glenn says one of the best parts of his job is Sea Views’ intergenerational programs, where secondary, primary and kinder students visit residents. “They share stories, they play games and do activities,” Glenn says. “The residents respond very well to children.” A few local secondary VET students come in one day a week to see the residents, as do six stu-

“I love seeing the responses when we have these events,” Glenn says. “You feel like you are giving to these people.” The residents are regular contributors to Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal and cancer research. A group of ladies recently started a knitting Red Cross Trauma Teddies which help comfort children during shock. “It’s all about maintaining their independence - doing things that they would do at home - and their need to be needed,” Glenn says. “They have very much become the owners of these events.”

dents completing a Rotary leadership program. “One student still visits a resident here that he worked with over a 10-week period, long after the program finished,“ Glenn says. “It’s a great way for kids to come in and gain something from the older generation.” But it’s not just bringing the community to Sea Views - it’s getting the residents out in it too. The home runs group outings to cafes or concerts, like a recent variety performance especially for seniors at St Ignatius College. The residents visit special events, like the Spirit of Anzac Exhibition when it was in Geelong this year.
Ingenia Lifestyle Lara is emerging as a soughtafter location for Victorians looking to downsize and reap the financial rewards of the land lease ownership model. To cater to the growing demand for affordable, lifestyle living options, project sales manager Kerri Hughes said the launch of the community’s brand-new display village included a selection of homes designed for singles, couples and those who required extra space after downsizing. “By providing buyers with a range of options, downsizers can select their new home based on their individual and lifestyle needs with the advantage of living in a brand-new home with no stamp duty, exit fees or council rates,” Kerri said. When Ingenia Lifestyle Lara resident Dianne Johnson embarked on making plans for her future, she decided to downsize to a community where there was more transparency in the agreement and it would not put a strain on her financial security.
Dianne Johnson, loving life at Ingenia Lifestyles’ Lara village.
Spacious, contemporary living is a hallmark of Ingenia developments.
“Purchasing a home at Ingenia Lifestyle was made so much easier knowing that I didn’t have to pay any stamp duty and there were no hidden fees. “Realising that I could actually afford a brandnew home was a huge relief for me financially. I think that’s why I bought so quickly.
“The community in Lara is just lovely, our location has the quietness of the country with the convenience of the city provided by easy access to Geelong and Melbourne,” Dianne said. To visit Ingenia Lifestyle Lara’s display village contact project sales manager, Kerri Hughes on 0491 229 257 or go to www.liveinlara.com.au.

Lodge to get facelift for the future A significant refurbishment project is underway at the Alan David Lodge residential aged care facility in Grovedale. Funding from the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) will upgrade the internal and external living environment to improve comfort and amenities for residents. The project will also implement a men’s shed, extra security and CCTV monitoring systems, new automated doors, a chook enclosure, an improved rehabilitation space with overhead hoist in the Lonsdale Sunroom, and improvements to dining areas and dining experience for residents.
Residents have given feedback on improvements they felt were important to enhance their enjoyment and quality of life at Alan David Lodge, including leather work, woodwork, computer activities and chooks. Aged Care Project co-ordinator Maree Townsend said Barwon Health would undertake all necessary requirements to minimise disruption during the refurbishment works, which were expected to last until August. “We will continue to meet with residents on a regular basis and provide a forum to listen and communicate all updates regarding the scheduled
works throughout the duration of the project,” she said. “This will definitely enhance choice and quality of life to residents. “Residents are excited to have the men’s shed set-up for activities like woodwork, leather work and computer activities,” she said. “They’re looking forward to having the freedom to go out into the garden at their own leisure, as well as the addition of some new activities to add to the variety on offer at Alan David Lodge.”
Alan David Lodge is undergoing further improvements inside and out.

Joint pain: assess, treat, move on Joint pain is most commonly experienced in the feet, toes, ankles and knees. Symptoms can include aching, swelling and stiffness making standing and other activities painful. Musculoskeletal podiatrist Dr David Kavanagh, of Foot and Leg Pain Clinics, says joint pain can have many causes. “It can be the result of overuse, faulty biomechanics, an injury or accident, but it could also be a sign of arthritis, of which rheumatoid and osteoarthritis are most common,” Dr Kavanagh said. Osteoarthritis is caused by mechanical wear and tear of joints, so usually occurs in older people. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease, where the body’s own immune system at-

tacks the joints and can affect people of all ages, including children. Therefore, an accurate diagnosis and correct treatment is very important, he said. The most qualified practitioner to diagnose and treat pain and injury associated with the feet and legs is a musculoskeletal podiatrist who has specific expertise in biomechanics and musculoskeletal concerns. Apart from thorough and accurate diagnostics and assessment, an experienced musculoskeletal podiatrist can provide advice and treatments including specific exercises for strengthening and conditioning. Unique Laser’s success is underpinned by their mission to provide unrivalled value in laser and cosmetic treatments to make their deserving clients feel and look their best. The clinic was recognised for its success by being a winner at the 2016 Geelong Business Excellence Awards, and a finalist in 2015. Improving a car’s power by up to 30 per cent while actually improving fuel economy sounds like a big ask for a Land Rover, BMW, Mini or Jaguar or other European marques. Not so, says Hunter Cuthill director Adam Hunter. It’s readily achievable by using top-line Autologic technology, he advises, adding that it’s also a sound way of ensuring efficiency performance in a more-sustainable fashion. Hunter Cuthill, in Geelong West’s Autumn St, specialises in quality independent servicing and repairs to all BMWs, Land Rover, Mini and Jaguars - as per factory schedules and directives and with full book service. The business also services car makes including Peugeot, Renault and Citroen. It is the only service centre in Geelong outside of direct dealers with the software and diagnostic equipment for these brands. “We utilise state of the art diagnostic equipment from Autologic, the world’s leading independent vehicle diagnostic software,” Adam says. “It’s the only independent tool that can program control units. Autologic also offer software power upgrades for diesel and some petrol engines, giving 30 per cent more power while improving fuel economy.” Hunter Cuthill is also right across the best battery choices to meet the energy demands of European cars. VARTA batteries, powered by AGM technology, feature advanced equipment such as start-stop technologies and regenerative braking systems. “This is a battery that delivers optimal performance, faster conductivity and reliable starting power, even when the charge is low,” Adam says. “AGM batteries deliver up to eight times the cyclic stability of conventional flooded batteries resulting in a longer battery life.” Hunter Cuthill is at 9 Autumn St, Geelong West, phone 5229 4299 or visit huntercuthill. com.au.

Hawkins’ hope for 200th game is a model victory By Luke Voogt Geelong forward Tom Hawkins will play his 200th against “the best in comp” when the Cats take on the Crows tonight. “We feel like we’ve got a blueprint where if we’re playing at our best we can beat them,” Hawkins said Tuesday. The game will likely be a high-scoring affair, with Adelaide leading the AFL on scoring with124 points a game and Geelong third with an average of 106. “I think they’re the best forward line in the comp,” Hawkins said. The Crows have multiple threats like captain Taylor ‘Tex’ Walker and the mercurial Eddy Betts. But Geelong’s “unique” attack would respond, said Hawkins, with many midfielders able to rotate forward. “Pat, Joel and Blitz have played deep forward as well.” The Crows haven’t won at Simonds Stadium since 2003 and Geelong have won their last five games against Adelaide. Last time, Betts only kicked a goal. But Cats coach Chris Scott was cautious about his team’s chances. “They are a forward line where if one doesn’t get you, the other will," Scott said on Wednesday. “I could go on and on about the challenges that they present,” he said. “When their midfield is on top, they give them pretty good delivery, so it’s multi-faceted. “The last thing I want to do is sit here and say we’ve got the formula against Adelaide. I just don’t believe that’s the case.“ With 17 tackles in each of his two games this year, Scott Selwood could help nullify Adelaide midfield star Rory Sloane. Both sides have come off two wins after form slumps, with Dangerfield kicking the winning goal in last Friday’s thriller against Port Adelaide. 34 GEELONG INDY Friday, 2 June, 2017
COACH: Chris Scott considers the season ahead at this week’s media conference. (Rebecca Hosking) Hawkins said it was great to play good football again after a “rough” three weeks. It’s been a sporadic season for the big Cat, who leads the club goal tally despite a few poor performances. Hawkins reflected on his career ahead of the big game. “When I finish footy I’d like to be thought of as a good team-mate,” he said. “It’s not just me who should be celebrating the 200 milestone, it’s the football club, it’s my friends, it’s my family, it’s my coaches at Finley footy club in under 14s when I first started.” But Hawkins has shown individual brilliance many times in his career. This reporter screamed like a lunatic in the
third row of the MCG, when the ‘TomaHawk’ kicked from outside 50 to beat Hawthorn in 2012. Earlier this season team-mates poked fun at the country boy’s love of flannelette shirts and choice of boots. “One thing I’ve enjoyed about footy clubs is ... the locker room and there’s a lot of s**t that gets spoken about in there,” Hawkins said. “We all make mistakes on the fashion field and I don’t think that’s one of mine.” Hawkins responded with a few jibes about former cat James Kelly’s obsession with three-quarter pants and Joel Selwood’s recent modelling efforts. “This morning I checked on Instagram and he was doing some modelling and looking quite uncomfortable."
Strong north winds over the past week were ideal for fishing from the sand at local surf beaches. Australian salmon to over 2kg snapped up bluebait and pilchards on paternoster rigs, while casting metal lures also produced results. The beaches produced gummy shark on fresh squid and salmon strips after dark. Bancoora was a standout but nearby 13th Beach also produced results. Trevally again took soft plastics in Queenscliff Harbour, where baits fished at the entrance accounted for some impressive whiting to 45cm. Land-based anglers again fared well on squid at Queenscliff Pier on size-three artificial jigs. Boaties who found a break in the weather to sneak out off St Leonards had little trouble bagging out on white around sunset. Snapper were well and truly on the bite in Corio Bay’s inner-harbour where anglers casting around structures in deep water found plenty of fish. Western Beach’s yacht moorings were great places to spot fish on sounders. Salmon to 35cm again popped up from time to time around the harbour. Southern Bluefin tuna were in good numbers from Port Fairy to Portland. Trolling lures worked well in 55m to 65m. Apollo Bay attracted a different calibre of tuna. Big barrels of 100kg were taken on the troll out from Cape Otway. Freshwater fishing went nuts with the onset of wet, wintry weather. Ever-reliable Stony Creek Reservoir was a solid producer of brown trout to 1kg on hard-body and spoon-type lures. The odd large redfin over 40cm was also banked. Lake Purrumbete cemented its reputation for trophy trout. Rainbow and brown trout and Chinook salmon all over 3kg were taken by anglers trolling Tassie Devils and hard-body lures. The lake’s east bank at first light was certainly hard to beat, with downriggers handy to find the fish holding slightly deeper during the middle of the day. Casting among the weed beds out from the boat ramp also worked, while brook trout to 1kg began to appear. Lake Bullen Merri was just as hot next door, with the average size of fish slightly down but plenty of rainbow trout and chinook salmon to 1.5kg available. Fishing Powe bait from the bank was an ideal approach, although anglers slow-trolling found good numbers around Potters Point. I fished around Bright over the weekend, catching plenty of brown and rainbow trout averaging 800g on soft plastics such as Berkley T-Tails in black and gold. Trelly’s Fishing World Geelong’s Adam Van Der Lugt took his annual pilgrimage up to the Eucumbene River. Fishing amid the snow, Adam landed numerous brown trout around 2kg on glow bugs and nymphs. Next week should provide some good freshwater fishing, with Wurdee Boluc Reservoir a good local option for big brown trout. Saltwater anglers could try the surf beaches for salmon or drive west to take on the mighty southern bluefin tuna.
BROWN OUT: Adam Van Der Lugt with a Eucumbene brown trout.
