SAVE OUR LIBRARY: Barwon Heads' residents desperately want their library to remain open. 169093

On borrowed time The forced closure of Barwon Heads Library would have a significant impact on Ocean Grove according to Save Barwon Heads Community Library member Karen Firth. Ms Firth said if the library was forced to close as per City of Greater Geelong’s ruling, it would overwhelm the facility in Ocean Grove as well as leaving hundreds of people in Barwon Heads without a community library. Barwon Heads, Chilwell and Highton libraries will close after a decision by the council, but members of the public have rallied in attempt to overturn the decision. “The impact on Ocean Grove’s library will be immense,” Ms Firth said. “It will force people from Barwon Heads over to Ocean Grove and with Ocean Grove’s rapidly expanding pop-

ulation, what other effects will it have? Many older people can’t drive.” Ms Firth said the Barwon Heads community had convinced the council to allow the library to remain open until the end of September, but the group was determined to push the matter further. “They (the council) didn’t consult people’s views,” she said. “The entire process was sneaky. They are just hoping we die a slow death in the next three months, but we won’t - we’ll keep fighting until the very end.” About 200 protesters stormed City Hall on 23 May to protest the closure of the three libraries, which was made due to financial constraints. All three libraries were granted a reprieve until the end of September, but the State Government is now being

urged to step in. “Although Geelong Regional Libraries (GRLC) recommended the closure of three branches to reduce the level of recurrent funding, they did not consult our community and neither did the City of Greater Geelong,” Ms Firth said. “In fact it was only last year that GRLC stated ‘excellence was delivered across all 16 libraries’ in their annual report.” Around 1300 signatures have been gathered for a petition to save the library and Barwon Heads Association president Sandy Gatehouse said the community was angry. “Community anger is rising in this normally happy seaside town at the city-centric decision-making process,” she said. Barwon Heads Arts Council presi-

dent Victoria Strachan said the retention of the library was paramount. “Barwon Heads Arts Council supports the retention of the Barwon Heads Community Library and continuation of a co-located model with Barwon Heads Primary School,” she said. “This model is cost-effective and suits the needs of our community. We understand it is a unique model within the Geelong region and suggest it could be considered for other smaller communities to provide cost-effective facilities. “The annual cost to operate the Barwon Heads Community Library is just $58,000 representing under one per cent of the rates collected in our town each year. A very small investment to develop a clever and creative community of 4000 people. Council needs to revisit its decision to close our library if it accepts the community consensus

to reshape Geelong as a clever and creative region. The decision to close the library needs to be reconsidered and reversed on the basis of the results of Our Future.” Save the Barwon Heads Library group will hold a rally on Sunday 18 June, at 2pm, at the library, which is located at the primary school on Golf Links Road, Barwon Heads. Anyone who wants the library to stay open is urged to attend. Spokesperson for the rally, Mandy Bridges said the number of patrons at the library during the past five years was up by eight per cent. “We have a great community those who live here can attest to this,” Ms Bridges said. “We need to make sure that it stays that way. Keeping our library open is important. Our library’s worth to the community isn’t measured by its size.”

Plastic to melt away at source tabase. This will allow the rubbish to be monitored over time and see if there has been any improvement. The most common items found included: Plastics - grocery bags, plastic drink bottles, food packaging. Cigarette butts. Polystyrene packaging. Glass bottles. Aluminium cans. Single-use plastics have a detrimental impact on marine life. Singleuse plastics include things like grocery bags, drink bottles and food packaging that are only used once and then discarded. The ocean is the last repository for rubbish, so it’s no surprise that we’re finding so much plastic along the beach. Once in the ocean, plastics break down into tiny particles that are consumed by marine life. Ocean Grove Coastcare is hoping that through the Plastic Bag Free campaign, there will be a shift in people’s behaviours and hopefully that will result in less marine plastic debris on our beaches and in the ocean. There will also be a film night on Thursday 22 June at Piping Hot Chick Shop and Burger Grill. It’s hoped the event will encourage local people to participate in Plastic Free July - an international initiative to

Earlier this year, a Source Reduction Plan was prepared for the reduction of plastic bags (and other single-use plastics) in Ocean Grove. The plan was supported by Sustainability Victoria’s Litter Innovation Grants as well as the Tangaroa Blue Foundation. The plan was implemented by a small working group under the banner of Ocean Grove Coastcare. A series of events are taking place to encourage the local community to reduce their plastic use, which included a beach clean up event that was held last month and an upcoming movie night. Ocean Grove Coastcare, with support from the Tangaroa Blue Foundation, co-ordinated a beach clean up at Ocean Grove Main Beach. The event also co-incided with international Earth Day. The purpose of the clean up was to collect and record rubbish that was found along the beach and car park areas at Main Beach. The enthusiasm from local volunteers was excellent and 34 volunteers turned out to lend a hand. During two hours, nine full bags of rubbish that weighed around 85kg was collected. Following the clean up, volunteers assisted Tangaroa Blue staff to sort and record the rubbish. This data was collated and has been uploaded to the Australian Marine Debris Initiative da-

Moving on from floods By Justin Flynn The Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre is still counting the cost of April’s torrential downpour that flooded some parts of the town. The centre has been closed since March when the first of the storms hit the region with the 24 April storm further damaging the building. Water came flooding down from Shell Road Reserve and damaged five rooms at the centre. Works are well underway to repair the facility, which will be open again on 17 July for term three classes. “We’ve had to cancel a lot of classes and had to squish a lot of people together in makeshift classrooms,” Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre assistant manager Julie Long said. “It’s impacted a lot on the centre.

There were groups that were leasing rooms that have now gone elsewhere.” Our Lady Star of the Sea Primary School, Bellarine Sports and Aquatic Centre and the Boorai Centre were similarly affected by the Anzac Day eve storm that also saw dozens of homes in Collendina flooded and evacuated. However the centre is slowly getting back on its feet with the carpets throughout the building being ripped out and renovations well underway when the Voice visited last week. Water ankle deep had flooded throughout most of the building. “They say it’s a once in 100 year thing, but you wouldn’t want to see it happen again anytime soon,” Ms Long said. “We should be back to full service in term three.”

A healthy dose of cash to help out our shed blokes pace, in their own time, in the company of other men. “Members have an opportunity to pass their skills to others, learn new things, or just catch up regularly with other men in the community for a chat and a cup of tea,” she said. The grant funding is part of the $5.1 million the government has provided to the Australian Men’s Shed Association through to 2018/19 to support the national network of Men’s Sheds. Details of all successful grant recipients from this National Shed Development Program funding round are available at www.mensshed.org “I am delighted to deliver this funding to the Ocean Grove and District Men’s Shed which comes on the back of the $10,000 our government announced in June last year for a shed upgrade and $1341 for first aid safety,” Ms Henderson said.

Have say on ‘bottleneck’ Motorists are reporting drives of up to 50 minutes from Ocean Grove to Geelong with sections of Barwon Heads Road sometimes at a standstill during peak hour. The single-lane road has become a source of frustration for drivers with development at Warralily and Armstrong Creek contributing to the problem. Armstrong Creek is the largest residential growth area in the state outside Melbourne.

Boom gates for V/Line trains are also holding up motorists on the road, while power-line works last week were a major cause of the extra-long delays. The Victorian Government committed $3 million to undertake a planning study to determine the future needs of Barwon Heads Road between Settlement Road, South Geelong and Lower Duneed Road, Mount Duneed. The study will enter phase

two, which entails: Developing draft designs and route options. Discussing key issues and opportunities. Collecting feedback from the community on what’s important to them. Do you have any news on the state of the road and what should be done? Contact the Voice at newsdesk@voicegroup.com.au

Glory days of sun, sand and the surf Ocean Grove has always had a strong surfing culture. You’ll find the highly entertaining book, ’Ocean Grove Surfing in the Sixties’ recalling the good old days. From surf shops, Skinners Corner Store, kiosks at the beach and all the stories from the people who made surfing in Ocean Grove in the 1960s, this book has it all. Particularly interesting are the multitude of photographs from the ’60s - yes, the beach was crowded in summer back then, too. Chapter 20 focuses on ’Surfing girls of the Grove’ and explains: “The girls I grew up with in the Grove were great, not pretentious, same as the guys, they came from good working class families and just wanted to have fun, and fun they had". Compiled by local surfer Ian Duckworth, the book says it was “written by everyone who wrote in it". It’s a must have for any Grover who is keen on surfing and even non-surfers will find it highly enjoyable. Ocean Grove Surfing in the Sixties costs $20 and is available at Endless Summer Cafe, Driftwood Cafe, Strapper Surf and BookGrove. Sales go to Beyondblue.

Blues master to hit town Australian Blues master and acoustic guitarist extraordinaire Lloyd Spiegel is delighted to announce the release of his ninth album ‘This Time Tomorrow’ - and that he is headed to Ocean Grove to perform. Spiegel will perform at the Piping Hot Chicken Shop and Burger Grill in what is sure to be a sellout concert. This Time Tomorrow was written as Lloyd travelled through Europe, Central and North America, and delivers driving rhythms that return Spiegel to his gut bucket blues roots. Shady and colourful characters spread out over continents and decades, through places forgotten and familiar.

In Australia, Spiegel is approaching icon status among guitar lovers and his 2015 double live album ‘Double Live Set’ won a swag of Australian blues ‘chain awards’, peaking at number seven in the APRA independent charts. With European and North American tours under his belt, along with recent showcases at Folk Alliance in Kansas City, the ECMAs in Canada and AMW in Sydney, Spiegel has many years on the road ahead of him. Spiegel’s show at the Chook Shop will be on Friday 23 June, at 8pm. Tickets are $25. Call 5255 1566.

Every building we design begins with a relationship based on understanding, cooperation, suggestion and creation. It is a process that encourages individual expression in the building of something lasting and valued.

New observation tower for OGSLSC State View, with Lisa Neville MP It was with pleasure that I once again attended the annual presentation night of the Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club recently. On the night I was very pleased to announce a State Government contribution of more than $270,000 towards the construction of a new observation tower for beach patrols. The tower will be built for next summer and will provide an enhanced observation site over the beach, making it safer for the thousands of people who can be on the beach at anyone time. It will also improve the direct contact and communications between beach goers and life savers on patrol. This funding is on top of the $2.675 million the State Government has committed towards the club’s upgraded clubroom project. As locals well know, the Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club not only provides an important and very professional service to beach goers over the summer months, but throughout the entire year the club is a wonderful contributor to the wider Ocean Grove community. For this I congratulate president David Pavia, the club’s executive committee and all members for the

contribution they make to our local community. Supercare Pharmacy I am pleased to report that a new Supercare Pharmacy is about to open in Curlewis so people on the Bellarine can get the health care and advice they need from pharmacists and nurses late at night. Curlewis Pharmacy 4 Less, in Centennial Boulevard, Curlewis, is one of seven pharmacies across Victoria that will open 24 hours a day, every day from 30 June, with a nurse on site from 6pm to 10pm daily. Victoria’s first five 24-hour Supercare Pharmacies were open mid last year in various suburbs of Melbourne and have helped thousands of people in that time. The development and opening of these new Supercare Pharmacies are a State Government election commitment to provide round-the-clock access to pharmacists for advice, supply of medicines and dispensing prescriptions. A nurse will be on site from 6pm to 10pm to provide face-to-face health advice and treatment for minor injuries or illness. The free nursing service also assists with wound management, physical assessment, flu and whooping cough immunisations, health screening, sexual

advice and referrals to other services. Supercare Pharmacies do not replace doctors, but give families another option and the peace of mind of knowing 24-hour care is on hand and closer to home. It also gives people on the Bellarine an alternative to going into Geelong’s busy emergency department for minor injury or illness. This is a great initiative and I look forward to the Supercare Pharmacy’s 24 hour opening on 30 June. Change of address Please note that my office has been relocated to Shop 66, Gateway Plaza Shopping Centre, corner of the Bellarine Highway and Melaluka Road, Leopold. The new phone number is 5250 1987. As always, please don’t hesitate to contact me by email or call my office if there are any matters that I may be able to assist you with directly. Mannerim Memorial Soldiers Indigenous Garden mention fund-raising efforts, this project is simply amazing and will be a wonderful addition to the community. All those who have contributed in some way should be commended. We are particularly grateful to W.M Buckle and Sons for their very generous donation of a 400mm x 350mm black granite panel with 57 names engraved in silver letters. This will be mounted in the near future. Furthermore, we have received some funds from the Deptartment of Veterans Affairs and a flagpole from the Queenscliffe RSL, and during May have raised around $900 to put towards the site costs. Our fund-raisers consisted of two sausage sizzles at Aldi Drysdale, manned by BLG volunteers and the police from the Bellarine. We are so grateful to all and would welcome further involvement from the community either by way of volunteering or donations.

Another to mention is Bob Evans from the St Leonards Men’s Shed who popped in at the Aldi sausage sizzle and offered assisance on the Mannerim site and elsewhere. Thank you. Stay tuned for visual progress in future newsletters. Guest speaker We were pleased to have Martin Scuffins, the director of Leigh Valley Hawk and Owl Sanctuary, provide us with a very entertaining talk at our 10 May information evening. Martin’s passion for hawks and other raptors was evident from the presentation of his mostly successful rescues and releases (back into the wild) of these beautiful creatures. Our guest speaker for June is Margaret Griffiths of the Barwon Estuary Project. The meeting will be held on Wednesday 14 and we welcome everyone. Please come and join us for an informative evening followed by a light supper.

Moolap coastal framework Our vice-president Kate Lockhart (along with other BLG committee members) attended the Moolap Forum on the above draft plan on Wednesday 17 May. This was hosted by Geelong Sustainability and included organisations such as DELWP, BirdLife Australia, Geelong Field Naturalists Club, Geelong Environment Council, Bellarine Catchment Network, BLG and of course Geelong Sustainability. Kate’s voice was heard loud and clear as she proposed reasonable and environmentally aware views for the strategic direction of land uses for the Moolap Saltworks, Point Henry and surrounding areas for the next 20 to 30 years. We urge you to complete the survey at www.engage.vic.gov.au/ moolap and be part of the environmental chorus striving to conserve these precious wetlands and terrestrial open space.

In the absence of a formal contribution to our newsletter from Bellarine Landcare Group president Jim Mason, it seems appropriate to lead with one of the main reasons behind this absence. Jim’s time has been spent to a large degree on the project management of the Mannerim Memorial Soldiers Indigenous Garden on Swan Bay Road, in collaboration with our wonderful volunteers of the BLG community, our facilitator Sophie, as well as the Bellarine police who have been incredibly generous with their time and initiative. While it may appear to some that the progress of the garden landscapaing is slow, planting is scheduled for this winter and there is no doubting our team’s sincerity and dedication. From the collection of past soldiers’ names to the installation of plaques, the laying of sleepers, planting flora, stripping bare a very large tree, not to

Celts hear the calling of festival The normally quiet bayside town of Portarlington Victoria will come alive again this June long weekend to the sound of harmonies and hard shoes when The National Celtic Festival comes to town. Running over four days from the 9 to 12 June, the festive extravaganza will showcase some of the world’s most culturally rich performers. The first international headliners to be announced this year are Welsh fivepiece Calan, Irish/US combo Kevin Crawford (flute), Patrick Doocey (guitar) and Colin Farrell (fiddle), and Scottish singer-songwriter Paul McKenna. Out from Ireland is traditional musician and teacher Daire Mulher, and Scottish Gaelic arts school Feis Rois will also feature. Ocean Grove local Gallie is a critically acclaimed songwriter from Ireland and will perform at the festival. His album ’The Occoquan River’ has made it to a number of Best of the Year lists from radio and press in both the US and Australia. Gallie is a natural raconteur whose performances have been getting rave reviews over the past year, “Sublime lyrics, tremendous melodies, sung by a singer with a voice that is both soulful and incredibly expressive", combine this with a killer story and you have the masterful art of Gallie and ’The Occoquan River’. Those representing the local celtic circuit include folk storytelling icon

Melbourne’s Gavin siblings, An Gabhain will also play, alongside acoustic duo Anna and Jordan, Brisbane-based the Barleyshakers, the Melbourne Scottish Fiddle Club, and Australian Idol star Damien Leith who returns to the festival for his sec-

ond year in a row. The National Celtic Festival is not limited to just music, with countless dance, theatre, comedy, literature and instrumental workshops included in the diverse range of activities on offer. Community arts project Lantunda will be one of two national theatre groups performing at the festival, bringing

together a mix of shadow puppetry, stories and music focused on themes of place, belonging and Gaelic traditions in Australia. Various troupes will be heeland-toeing their way through the long weekend, including the internationally renowned Glenbrae Scottish Dancers and the Victorian Irish

Dance Academy. The festival uses a range of venues within the town to house these eclectic and energetic sessions, including community halls and spaces, the hotel, restaurants, cafes and churches. Marquees are also set up on the foreshore to provide additional venues and a beautiful backdrop. From young blood to veteran artists, bagpipes to bodhrans, there’s something for everyone in 2017. So grab a Guinness and head to www. nationalcelticfestival.com for further information and to book tickets.

There’s a lot to like about Clifton Springs Golf Club’s seaside bistro aptly named the ‘Springs Bistro’ and if you havne’t been in to check it out since its renovation, you’re missing out. In 2015 the club’s bistro underwent a major refurbishment with the brief being to create a contemporary dining space that takes full advantage of the incredible view overlooking the rolling greens below and the breathtaking Bellarine Peninsula coastline. Safe to say, they’ve hit a hole-in-one and it would seem many locals and visitors agree with the bistro becoming a real favourite in the region. It’s not just patrons who agree; in April 2017, the Springs Bistro won the CCV (Community Clubs Victoria) award for ‘Best Regional Bistro’ in the State, recognised for its accessible and produce driven menu, attentive service and comfortable surrounds. It’s relaxed dining at its finest, open for lunch and dinner seven days a week. Head chef Danny Brick has been at the helm for two years and has worked hard to create a menu that is both accessible and appealing, while also supporting local suppliers and producers. Springs Bistro general manager Danny Zernich says: “Creating a menu to appeal to the growing younger market without upsetting the existing clientele was a tricky task. We put a lot of time into listening to our customers and reacting to their feedback. Having a chef

environment

Winter works its wonders peared, but I did manage to see some lovely white-necked herons. One Friday I was going to clean my house, which was a long overdue task, but looked out the window at the blue sky and decided to drive to Castlemaine to check out the powerful owls that had been seen there. On the way I stopped off at the Stony Creek Picnic Area at the Brisbane Ranges, and I was the only person there, which was glorious. I made it to Castlemaine and did manage to see the pair of powerful owls, but they were around 40 metres up in a huge pine tree, so photo opportunities were limited, (but at least I saw the desired bird species this time). Then my friend Pat joined a walking group and went to Lake Elizabeth in the Otways, and when she told me, I asked her to take me as I’d heard of Lake Elizabeth but had never been. Wow, it was the most magical place and it was cold and damp but glorious! The highlight was spotting an olive whistler, and we also saw a pair of golden whistlers, brown thornbills, satin bowerbirds, eastern yellow robins,

crimson rosella and many grey shrikethrush. Just beautiful! I think I’ve done a lot of driving and exploring and I still haven’t cleaned my house. And I will keep searching for an owlet nightjar. We conserve, present and enhance the natural & developed coastal environs for the enjoyment and use of all

BARWON COAST Barwon Coast is a Committee of Management appointed by the State Government with responsibility for the management of 13km of coastal crown land from 7W Collendina to 42W Blue Rocks, Barwon Heads covering our beautiful beaches in Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and 13thBeach. Our Committee members are local residents appointed with consideration of the skills and experience that they have to offer in the management of this important piece of coastline. OUR ENVIRONMENT Dogs on Public Land Dogs off leash are continuing to cause concerns throughout out coastal reserves. We are experiencing reports of children being harassed and intimidated by dogs at large whilst they are recreating along the beach with their families. We must all be mindful that although you may be allowed to have your dog off leash, it must be close to you and be under voice control. A dog must be under EFFECTIVE CONTROL, and not rush up to another person or animal, it is in fact an offence to do so under the Domestic Animals Act 1994 and a fine of up to $600 can be applied. More recently it has been brought to our attention of people exercising their dogs off leash through the caravan parks. Both the Barwon Heads Caravan Park and Riverview Family Caravan Park do not allow dogs off leash at any time. Of concern was the visual evidence of a dog off leash in one of the parks near a Ringtail Possum. Please be respectful when recreating throughout our reserves with your dogs and obey the rules. The rules exist to ensure everybody gets a fair go. Our Wildlife Our wildlife is on the move and very much around on the public land we recreate on. Juvenile seals are hauling out along our coastline. These animals are already compromised and weak so resting along our shores is critical for their survival. Throughout Ocean Grove recently there appears to be Eastern Grey Kangaroos on the move. Please be alert when driving as they are very flighty animals and may by accident jump in front of your car. Keeping your speed down especially around dusk and dawn will minimise the risk of this happening. Let’s give them a chance to find their way back out to the Lake Connewarre system. Whales have started to pass by our shores, so keep your eyes out over the ocean for a sighting of a Southern Right Whale or Orca, both of which have recently been sighted. Barwon Coast is happy to receive reports of your siting’s and any photographs you may have. OCEAN GROVE SURF BEACH COMPLEX: In mid-April the Barwon Coast Committee of Management (BCCM) called for tenders for a new 21-year lease at the Dune Café site of the Ocean Grove Surf Beach complex. Barwon Coast Committee General Manager Gary McPike said: “As a publicly-owned building on Crown land it is essential that all interested parties have the opportunity to tender for this lease.” “The timing is perfect as the successful tenderer will have the opportunity to have input into the detailed design phase of the project, ensuring it is built to their requirements. Probity is paramount throughout the tender process, and all interested parties will be afforded open, transparent and equitable opportunities to participate.

Powerful owl at Castlemaine. 169085

“BCCM expects the open and public tender process will deliver the best value for money outcome with direct benefits for all Victorians who use and enjoy the coast,” he said. The tender has attracted strong interest, with the outcome of the tender expected by late June. BCCM is working closely with the Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club to develop plans for the new Surf Beach Complex building, which is funded by BCCM, the Victorian Government and the Commonwealth Government. Mr McPike said, “The Ocean Grove foreshore and Surf Beach Complex provide significant economic, social, recreational and environmental values to the local community and all visitors to the site.” “Redeveloping the Complex to provide increased levels of service for current and future generations is crucial and is broadly supported. It is envisaged that significant improvements will be made to the facilities available for the lessee and patrons of the café facility. The community will have the opportunity to comment on the proposed new building during the advertising period for the Planning Permit application. COGG DOMESTIC ANIMAL MANAGEMENT PLAN REVIEW Don’t forget COGG’s Domestic Animal Management Plan 2017-21 Discussion Paper is out for public comment. This Council document explains how the City of Greater Geelong currently manages domestic animals with our municipality. The final plan aims to provide pet owners assistance, protect the environment, balance the needs of pet owners and non-pet owners, address animal welfare issues and legal issues and promote responsible pet ownership. Responsible pet ownership continues to be a high priority for Barwon Coast, and we encourage pet owners to take up the opportunity to have your say. The closing date for submissions has been extended to 9th of June 2017 with the documents easily accessible on COGG’s website. Gary McPike General Manager

Despite the cool and wet weather, I’ve had the most fabulous few weeks of tripping round. Firstly, I noticed on Bernie Lingham’s Facebook profile that she had seen an Australian owlet nightjar in broad daylight, sunning itself with its head sticking out of a tree hollow. I’ve been wanting to spot this species of bird for ages, so I asked Bernie where she saw it, and found out that she had seen the bird at Inverleigh Fauna and Flora Reserve. Armed with Bernie and Barry’s great instructions on where to find the hollow, I spent two fruitless days looking for the owlet nightjar, but I did see some other fabulous birds, including a pair of restless flycatchers, flame robins, a rose robin, lots of calling fantail cuckoos, white-eared honeyeaters, yellow-faced honeyeaters and whistling kites. Then I noticed on the Geelong Field Naturalists website that an Australasian bittern had been observed by several people, including Tom Fletcher, at Breamlea. By the time I finished a stint of night shift and had a chance to go and look for the Bittern, it had disap-

Wins hard to find for Bears The Bellarine Bears’ A Grade and A Reserve teams played against Mounties YC and the C Grade side hosted Guild Lions. The A Grade side was able to come away with the Bears’ only win for the weekend. Starting off with the first game between the A Reserve and the Mounties and 17-year-old Lachlan Hockey was the man on the mound for the Bears. Hockey had an average game and reached his pitch count after only 2.5 innings, with seven hits, six strikeouts and four batters walked. Matthew Sage came on to relieve the pitching for the remaining innings of the game with five strikeouts and three batters walked. The Bears’ batters were struggling to convert the hits into runs with six batters left on base at the end of the game. This, combined with Mounties taking advantage of the errors that were made, gave Mounties the win 104. Harry Lazarus and Stuart Anderson both finished the game with two runs each with Anderson also scoring an RBI. Single hit games went to Mark Lazarus, Alex Hockey and Chris Hockey. Later in the day, Josh Crotty had an absolutely amazing game pitching to Lewis Weldon for the Bears, with some great backup in the field and from his reliever Simon Murry to hand the Bears the 7-1 win.

Matt Price on the pitcher's mound. 168834 Emotions were high for Crotty and his side, who went down to the Mounties last time they played due to the weather, to prove a point that they play well away from their home ground in Wallington. Hits were coming in plenty for the Bears with a big double to right field from Chris Barker as well as two-hit games from Cameron Brown and Si-

William Cameron at bat. 168834 mon Murry and single hit games from Lachlan Medew and Lachlan Hockey. Best players for the day were Josh Crotty, Simon Murry and Cameron Brown. The final game for the weekend on Sunday between Guild and Bellarine was extremely close for the entire two hours. Both teams were strong in the

field, making minimal errors and had strong pitcher and catcher combinations. It has been great to see junior players Ethan Weakley and Finn Ferguson-Cumming come into their own over the start of this winter season in their first year as senior players and they both played great games over the weekend in both fielding and batting. The game between these two teams

went down to the wire, with the Bears narrowly losing to the Lions side 8-6. Best players for this game went to Paul Cameron, Meg Fahy and Matt Price. Want to find out more? Follow the Facebook page at ‘Bellarine Bears’ and message them to find out what to do to become a Bear. The club also runs a T-ball program for junior cubs and has both under-12 and an under-14 sides.

Inspirational win for Grove OCEAN GROVE JUNIOR FOOTBALL UNDER 9 OGCC Orange (43) v Barwon Heads (13) What a fantastic Battle of the Bridge! OGCC White (13) v Torquay McCartney (24) Awards to Harvey Connolly, Leon Connolly, Jack Wallbank, Jackson De Jong and Alex Morgan. The boys had a great start to this game linking up with handballs and kicking two goals in the first quarter. Throughout the rest of the game you could see the skill improvement though the whole team. OGCC Blue (19) v Grovedale Donahue (27) The teams were evenly matched with the Blue boys showing a slower pace game in the wet. The boys held their opponents well but not quite enough, with Grovedale taking the win. Awards to Taj Dodson, Ewan Millard, Izaak Peace, Caleb Stolk and Arthur White. OGCC Red (60) v Swans Red (33) Great morning for footy and a good performance by the whole group. Award winners Ben Miners, Toby Duckett, Kia Dickson and Lucian Joyce. UNDER 10 OGCC Orange (57) v Leopold Dahlhaus (12) The boys stood up again this week with another strong team performance. Captain this week, Noah Jeffrey led by example with another great game. Other award winners Max Connell, Sam Sales, Noah Leske and Tyla Meyer. OGCC Blue (29) v Swans Blue (44)

A great effort against the best opposition they have faced this year. The Cobras did not stop competing all day and executed their skills well for the most part of four quarters. In this game we saw the boy’s teamwork and positioning in the course of play step up to another level. This side continues to show excellent development as a team and though history will record this as a loss, the experience of playing against top competition like this will further feed their development. OGCC White (41) v Torquay McMahon (47) A terrific contest on Saturday in which both teams played some great footy. Both teams were aggressive at the contested ball all day. The ball movement was a highlight with the ball control exceptional for Under 10s football. Lachie Morrow was outstanding as was Lachie Norton with his precise ball use and Jack McGough kicked four goals in the second quarter. Encouragement awards went to the consistent Lucas Anderson, Cade White and Joshua Poirier who were both fantastic. UNDER 12 OGCC Orange (33) v Torquay Davies (58) Physically intense wet morning at the Snake Pit plenty of hard contests made great viewing. Slippery pill seemed hard to hang on to but when they did they moved it well. Michael Wilkinson kept them at bay, Miller Keck was on fire as too was Archie Fleet. Torquay hit hard but keepers of the peace James Barry and Harry Rolfs squared things up. Thomas Staehr did his bit defending outstandingly. OGCC White (29) v Torquay Stone (38) A strong start to the early away game gave the Cobra boys a great lead into half time. The opposition fired back in the second half and with more run in their legs came home stronger. Awards to Alex Gibbon, Brodie Styles, Josh Davitt, Jarred Farrell, Luke Devlin and Finn Reid.

OGCC Blue (25) v Grovedale Smith (36) The boys had another tight tussle, getting out of blocks well and leading at the first break. The Grovedale boys pegged us back to get the points at the end of the game despite the Cobra boys having plenty of ball in our forward half. Great sportsmanship by Makani Storey, Jamieson Renkauskas, Lachlan Appleyard and Kai Caligari by playing a quarter for Grovedale given they were short on numbers. Awards this week to previously mentioned boys as well as the always hard working Levi Norman and James Devine with some great marking around the ground. UNDER 14 Round 3 OGCC 1 (40) v St Joseph’s 1 (25) It was a perfect morning for a tough contest and the Cobra boys came out to play from the first bounce. Grubbers claim Modda scalp in this significant victory By Mark Heenan The Grubbers’ hard-fought 10-point victory over BFL finals challenger Modewarre at Mount Moriac Recreation Reserve was significant on many fronts. It was the first time Ocean Grove had beaten an opposition team higher on the ladder this season. The narrow victory saw fourthplaced Grubbers leap-frog Modewarre with its superior percentage and 5-3 record after eight rounds. Ocean Grove senior coach Paul Lynch was pleased with his side’s ability to claim a top-five scalp. “To get a win against a side above us I thought it was we needed as a group to give us that confidence is we can challenge the better sides,” he said. “To beat Modda on their home deck in BFL footy terms it does not get much harder than that.” Kicking downhill with a wind advantage in the first term home side Modewarre flew out of the blocks and led by 18 points at quarter time. Modewarre key forward Josh McDonald dominated early and finished the game with six goals. Ocean Grove produced a gutsy reply in the second quarter with four goals and held a three-point lead at the main break. Star Grubber ruckman Andrew Jarvis asserted his dominance and won vital tap outs and was instrumental with great physical work at the stoppages. “His intensity and effort around

The cream rose to the top in the third term, Ocean Grove elite midfielder James Linton won numerous clearances and drove the ball forward inside 50. Grubber Adam Marangon created outside run and played his best game to date in the red and white. Ocean Grove youngster Matt Caldow who finished with three goals, was a tower of strength and took some courageous contested marks. Caldow injured his ankle and was bandaged up with a cut to his forehead.

“I thought Matty Caldow who had a crook ankle and a split head to play the way he did ... he is only a kid still and to play with two injuries and mark the way he did was fantastic,” Lynch said. Ocean Grove jumped out to a 25-point lead during the final quarter, though Modewarre kicking uphill finished stronger with repeat forward 50 entries and reduced the deficit to 10 points at the final siren. “We were a little bit out on our legs, blokes were a bit sore,” he said. Key forward Jake Carmody finished with four goals, while small forward Travis Gavin kicked three and skipper Kelly Williams booted two majors.

Back on track By Mark Heenan Ocean Grove produced a stunning turnaround to upstage reigning premier Geelong Amateur by 14 points at Ray Menzies Memorial Oval on Saturday. Down by 24 points at half time, the home side outscored their highly fancied opponents 10 goals compared to Amateur’s four majors in the second half. The landmark victory came as Ocean Grove strung three victories in a row after wins over Queenscliff, Modewarre and Geelong Amateur. Incredibly Ocean Grove’s last victory over Geelong Amateur, BFL triple premiers from 2014 to 2016, came almost five years ago in Round 12 in 2012. Ocean Grove senior coach Paul Lynch labelled Amateur as the “benchmark of the BFL" though he admits his side can’t afford to rest on its laurels. “They are one of the better sides and it was good to get a win against a very

good side," he said. “They are the last premiership winners, so until they get knocked off they are the benchmark of the competition." “It probably has been our best win for the year. “We are definitely not getting carried away with it and we have got a long way to go ... we have got to keep working and getting better." It was a game to savour for dynamic forward Travis Gavin in his 150th match. The dangerous Gavin finished with five goals and sealed the game with a crucial goal late in final term. “Travie is very important to us and his last three weeks have been exceptional,“ Lynch said. Key forward Jake Carmody was dominant with strong marking leads and also booted four goals. Carmody lifted his season’s goal tally to 26 after nine rounds and remains in

third spot on the goalkicking table. Ocean Grove midfielders James Linton and Brent Macleod were in vintage form and gathered plenty of the ball with the pair’s tackling pressure enormous. Captain Kelly Williams and Andrew Jarvis were both named in Ocean Grove’s best players. Amateur forward Damien Zaparenkov was a key marking target and finished with two goals, which included a miraculous goal from the boundary line. Zaparenkov’s team-mate Matt Walsh proved a handful across half forward, while Amateur’s two-prong ruck duo in Hamish Dahl and Chris Kangars played serviceable games. Ocean Grove’s next senior game is against Newcomb at Newcomb on Sunday 11 June. See page 30 for more pictures and the full scoreboard from the game.
