“He was going back to work and said he would be home later.” At 4.30pm, Marianne woke to a “shuffling” in the wardrobe. “I thought wow that was quick, he’s home early,” she said. But she instead found a teen rummaging through the wardrobe, who had no idea as she was there when she rose to confront him.

“I was under the blankets,” she said. Marianne flowed into a Muay Thai fighting stance as she approached the youth. “I’ve come forward with my hand up,” she said. “What am I supposed to do, just stand there?” “It all came natural to me. Rippleside mother Marianne Valitutti made international headlines this week after using her Muay Thai skills to scare three would-be thieves from her partner’s Drumcondra home. “They were looking for cash,” she told the Indy proudly. “They got away with nothing.”
“I just put my guard up and they knew not to mess with me - they knew this woman meant business. Girl power!” The mother of two was sick and resting in bed after her partner, hotelier George Ramia, had left for work. “George was home an hour before and he came to check on me because I was unwell,” the 47-year-old said.

Current Affair ice claims amount to less than zero By Luke Voogt

Three-car smash Paramedics took five people to Geelong Hospital after a three-car crash in Charlemont on Wednesday. Belmont fire fighters freed a 24-year-old man who was trapped in his car in the collision, which occurred at the intersection of Barwon Heads and Marshalltown Roads at 1.30pm.
Policeman charged A policeman will front Geelong Magistrates’ Court on 16 June following a Professional Standards Command investigation. The Western Region senior constable was charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice and misconduct in public office relating to two incidents that allegedly occurred in 2014.
Duplication call Local Coalition MP Simon Ramsay has called on State Government to match the Federal Government’s $100million for the South Geelong and Waurn Ponds rail duplication. Mr Ramsay told parliament that up to $900 million which should have appeared in the State Budget papers for regional transport projects will end up elsewhere.
Car salesman jailed A Grovedale used car salesman will spend 30 days in prison after pleading guilty to stealing $52,600 in Geelong Magistrates’ Court. Mark Mickelssen will serve an 18-month community corrections order and was ordered to repay the money to his victim.
Missing person Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate Clifton Springs woman Tania Hadzig. The 28-year-old was last heard from about 6.30pm yesterday (Thursday) Tania Hadzig via a text message. Police released an image of Tania and a likeness of a vehicle (pictured) she may be driving in the hope that someone recognises her. They urged anyone who sights Tania or who knows of her whereabouts to contact Bellarine Police Station on 5256 2698.
By Mandy Oakham Cycling fanatic Rod Charles will take Geelong locals for a ride through the city’s biking history for the 200th birthday of the bicycle this weekend. Rod, who is the author of three volumes of the book A Whirr of Many Wheels which details Geelong’s long love affair with the bike, will lead the ride from Hearn Parade, Eastern Beach, at 9am on Sunday. “Since people first looked up at the You Yangs and realised that they could use bikes to get out to these beauty spots the whole of the Geelong area has had a passion for the bicycle,” Rod said. “People used to arrive in Geelong by steamer or on the train and they would holiday by taking a ride through the Western districts. “You could say the bike is actually embedded in the history of Geelong.” In 1979 Geelong was officially declared as “the first cycle city” of Australia because of the State Government’s efforts at the time to produce the first comprehensive bicycle plan for the city and its surrounding areas. Rod plans to lead his pedal power posse from Eastern Beach, through Eastern Park, then onwards through the town pointing out sights of cyclical interest, with a planned finish out at Point Henry which was the point where people would disembark from the steamers early to begin their holiday rides. In 1817, German inventor Karl Drais thought that there must be an alternative to the cumbersome horse and cart and designed the Laufmaschine (running machine), which then became the Draisine, the precursor to the bicycle of today.
In Brief
Two pursuits, one hour Police arrested a man following two car pursuits through Geelong in one hour last Friday. Police initiated pursuit of a white Corolla at Townsend Road, Whittington, about 1pm following reports of burglary. The male driver allegedly dumped the car on Thenton Street in St Albans Park and fled over several fences. He stole a black Holden Cruz from the backyard of a nearby residence and drove off, police alleged. The man allegedly dumped the vehicle in Emerald Street, Belmont before police arrested him in nearby Thomas Street about 1.45pm. OLD SCHOOL: Rod Charles with an old penny farthing bike. 97404

A Current Affair has refused to apologise for labelling Geelong “ground zero” for ice, despite new statistics prepared for the Indy which contradicted the claim. Some Victorian local governments had almost triple the methamphetamine-related offences of Geelong in 2016, according to the latest Crime Statistics Agency data. Geelong was below the Victorian average, with 101 ice use and possession offences per 100,000, compared to 300 in Ararat. Superintendent Craig Gillard said the data painted a more accurate picture of crime in Geelong. “Clearly this data validates what we’ve been saying for some time,” he said. “Geelong is not the ice capital of Victoria and is far from it.” The City of Melbourne, Northern Grampians and Dandenong all recorded more than twice the number of ice offences per capita of Geelong. In drug-affected crime, Geelong had 161 offences per 100,000, compared to 557 in the City of Melbourne and 618 in La Trobe. The Indy requested an apology from A Current Affair and the reporter behind the segment but both declined to respond. Last week Supt Gillard ridiculed the show’s claims.
that. You can go to areas in Melbourne and it’s far worse.” During 2014/2015 Greater Geelong recorded 39 crystal methamphetamine-related callouts per 100,000 residents, ranking the city 20th worst out of 79 Victorian municipalities. Melbourne, Port Phillip and Latrobe recorded 124, 97 and 96 callouts per 100,000 respectively. Geelong’s drug use and possession offences in 2016, at 346 per 100,000, were below the Victorian average of 406. Supt Gillard, who appeared in A Current Affair’s report on Monday night, admitted Geelong had an ice problem but denied local police were “overwhelmed”. “Yes, we’ve got ice here because some criminals choose to ply their trade in our town,” he said. Drug use and possession offences in Geelong doubled in the past five years but most of the charges were the result of police work, Supt Gillard said. “They’re police detected offences. That’s an indication of where our focus is and how we’re doing our job. “I’m really comfortable in our approach towards the distribution and use of ice, and the related offences.”

Double Take All this talk of Chinese back door activities and efforts to extend their soft power down under made this old scribe think about where the real Chinese power lies. Been to Yum Cha lately? If you are a gweilo (white ghost) think about this. The last time you indulged in the very civilised experience of a Yum Cha lunch did you succeed in getting the elusive squid trolley to stop at your table? Did you get a warm egg tart or did you get the old “so sorry no more” line that I always seem to get? I know that squid trolley and the warm egg tarts are lurking somewhere and being dished out along party lines to people in the know - I just know it!! This is how real power is exercised!
Help is close to home.
And speaking of power - of the not so soft variety. Having watched our very own Ms Muscles Muay Thai Marianne make world headlines by seeing off a trio of naughty boys, it got Double Take thinking about Marianne Valitutti 169353 (Rebecca Hosking) other naughty boys who have been spitting their dummies lately and making a big mess in their sandpits. It’s funny how naughty boys like to think they are very tough until they come against a genuinely tough woman and then it is pretty clear to see who actually does wear the pants - as it were - in power politics. So think about the great orange Mr Trump when he came up against the Mighty Merkel or Prince Harry being carpeted by his hand bag wielding grandmother. What is about Grr..girl power that makes the male of the species back down, back off or indeed rack off? Genuine fear? Or just horror at the disruption in the force when females act in unexpected ways? And finally, continuing the theme of soft power, and speaking of dummy spits, Andrew Bolt bruises a fellow male in the crown jewels because he has attempted to “glitter bomb” him? Insert here emoji of horrified/ startled face followed by emoji of laughing until the tears come out face. Is “glitter bombing” really the new way males are going to exercise power? After all this thinking about Sino, trans and cross gender power this old scribe can think of only one thing to do. I am packing up my bat, my ball, my dummy and heading to the nearest Muay Thai class!

Muay Thai mum sees off intruders From page 1 “At first he didn’t turn around. I’m like ‘who the hell are you and what are you doing here?’ This kid - he went as white as a sheet.” The teen, who was wearing a light-grey hooded jumper, tried to conceal his face and fled. “He seemed to know exactly where to go,” Marianne said. The brave mother chased the youth down corridor towards the back door. “The adrenaline - oh my god, it just kicked in like that,” she said. “I never thought I would have that in me.” It was there she spotted a second teen in a red hooded jumper who she said looked younger than the first youth. “He looked like he didn’t want to be there, he was so frightened. He’s just s**t himself,” she said. “The other one that’s in the lounge room has heard what’s happening and ran off.” Security camera footage recorded the three youths fleeing through the back door. The footage showed Marianne angrily pointing her finger. “I’m yelling ‘I know who you are. I’ve seen your faces. You’re not getting away with this’,” she said. “I’m not going to say exactly what I said but there was a bit of colourful language. “When we went to have a look at the footage I was thinking ‘oh my god this looks more comical than anything else’. I looked like an Italian nonna.” Amazingly, it was the fifth time intruders had targeted the home in two years, Marianne said. “I can’t believe this has happened.” Marianne credited her courageous actions to her five years training in Muay Thai. “Other people might have just stood there in shock and not done a thing,” she said. “The first thing in my mind was ‘protect yourself ’. It was only after they fled that I was bit shaken.” Marianne called triple zero and police arrived five minutes later.
A video grab from the incident shows two of the intruders fleeing.

kids because we just wanted them caught. “The next thing we know it’s just gone viral. I had phone calls from everyone, they were all so concerned.” Media outlets rang Marianne repetitively throughout the week but she had agreed to speak exclusively to the Indy. Marianne works for Geelong Coast Magazine,
the Indy’s sister publication, both of which are owned by Star News Group. “I wanted to be loyal to the company I work for,” she said. And Marianne had a message for the teens. “Why cause misery and problems to other people. Grow up, think, get a job. You could cause a little old lady a heart attack.” Police charged a teenage boy on Thursday.

Man in coma after home invasion By Mandy Oakham A Corio man caught up in a violent home invasion on Tuesday is recovering from his injuries. The 36-year-old victim suffered head and facial injuries in the attack and was airlifted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital where he was placed in an induced coma after the assault. His condition is now described as stable. Police and paramedics were called to a unit block on Cleveland Court, Corio, about 9.40pm on Tuesday. Detective Senior Constable Mark Thomas said
an unconscious man with severe head injuries was found inside the home. It’s thought a neighbourhood dispute may be behind the attack with an incident at a nearby flat earlier in the night. Specialist crime scene investigators spent much of Wednesday morning photographing the inside of the unit, hidden from view by trees, before collecting potential evidence. Detectives have also been interviewing people at neighbouring properties and are calling for any witnesses to come forward or to call Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000 Following the assault, Channel 9 journalist
Neary Ty was racially abused at the scene by a man who approached her in an aggressive manner before launching a verbal tirade which was caught on camera. “What country do you come from?” he’s seen yelling at her, to which she responds: “I was born here.” The man continues shouting at Ty, asking: “You’re not f***ing Aussie, are ya? If you’ve got such a beautiful country, f*** off back there.” He follows it up with rude gestures, before spitting in her direction. Ty exposed the racist rant via Twitter, uploading the video with the caption: “You see and hear
a lot on the road while reporting, but I wasn’t expecting this in Geelong today.” Geelong residents took to Facebook to vent their disgust at the racist abuse. “How ignorant, and embarrassing for you and your family,” one user said. “I’m sure they are used to your racist tirades but it wouldn’t be fun spread in the media, as it is.” “I’m really proud to live amongst a majority of good folks who don’t want to tolerate this in our area. “There’s no good excuse or reason for his behaviour, no matter what situation the bloke has been in.”
Bright eyed after the baby blues By Mandy Oakham Geelong mothers suffering post birth blues are about to get the biggest helping hand from a new one-stop resource. The new web resource, ellaslist, is about to officially launch its Melbourne website which will include a Geelong section filled with practical advice and tips for women trying to get through another week with young children. Established in 2010, the website features daily, local reviews and general inspiration to help mums use the digital world to get offline, get outside, and to make real life connections in their local communities. The website’s biggest success has been in breaking down feelings of loneliness and isolation for mothers which could lead to serious mental health issues. Lauren Humphris is a young mother who has already benefited from the service and is now helping to build the resource for women in the Geelong region. “This truly is a one-stop shop for young mothers who wake up and think ‘what am I going to do with the kids today’,” Lauren said,
HELPING HAND: Lauren Humphris and son Flynn. 169379
“It is so easy for young mothers with young kids to fall into a funk and just retreat into themselves and stay at home because it is all too hard. “It is so easy with all the mummy blogs and Instagram out there portraying this perfect image of mothers with flat stomachs, looking beautiful with perfect children to fall into the trap of thinking ‘I am so bad, a failure’.” Practical information on the site includes things like whether restaurants are kid friendly, whether or not a pram will fit into the premises, how far the nearest parking is, and how much a day out will end up costing. Lauren said she considered herself one of the lucky ones having now moved on from her broken marriage and building a new life with her kids Flynn, now three, and Ned almost 18 months, and her part-time position as a media/English teacher at St Joseph’s College, Geelong. “When my marriage first broke down and I had to move back in with my parents with two very young kids it was just awful,” she said. “Motherhood can be hard, messy and boring and resources for women like council-funded mothers’ groups and ellaslist really do provide women with a genuine life line.“

HANDS OFF: Protesters tell the government not to privatise disability insurance. 169268 Picture: JANETTE LOMAX
Workers fight on By Mandy Oakham Disability workers took to the streets of central Geelong this week as they ramped up their campaign again proposed government changes to the NDIS. Around 50 protesters marched from Trades Hall through Geelong to the offices of Gayle Tierney, the Minister for Training and Skills. Local organiser for the Health and Community Services Union, Angela Carter, said that her union planned to escalate their actions in coming weeks in the Geelong area as there are currently around 200 disability workers in the region facing uncertainty about their jobs and their future. This week’s rally was focused on getting the State Government back to the table to finalise EBA negotiations, and is part of the wider campaign by the union against what it is sees as the privatisation of disability. “We want the minister to find her voice and bring pressure to bear on her government to give

our members some certainty about their future,“ Angela said. “The government is using the roll out of the NDIS to privatise the services, and are saying that it is all about cutting costs. “But when you cut costs, you affect the quality of the services being offered by our members and increase uncertainty about our members’ job future.“ There are 19 group homes for the disabled spread across the Geelong region with 105 residents affected by the uncertainty surrounding the NDIS roll out. “The government says privatisation is all about choice, but the government is actually removing choice,“ Angela said. “They wouldn’t be game to talking about privatising public health, but they feel free to do exactly that to disability services. “We just want an end to the uncertainty for our members and for the people in their care.“

East Geelong teen Kennedy Jones will take on the world’s best highland dancers when she travels to Scotland this August. Travelling to the Scottish town of Cowal will be dream come true for the Kiwi-expat, who has danced since she was five years old. “I’ve never been (to Scotland) so I’m quite excited,” the 13-year-old told the Indy Tuesday. “It will be tiring, but it will be great being around all the girls.” Kennedy will perform in the 12 to 15 age group at eight different events across Scotland, including the world qualifiers at the Cowal Highland Gathering. She will also perform at Scotland the Brave, featuring more than 100 Celtic singers, dancers, and musicians, in Melbourne from 30 June to 2 July. The Year 8 student resumed highland dancing in Australia a month after her family moved to Geelong from New Zealand in January. “But (it was) a different style though, so I basi-
cally had to restart everything,” she said. After just a few months of learning the style, Kennedy scored an invite to Scotland from her dance teacher Sarah Adams. She has since has placed highly in both Victorian and national competitions. “I’ve been doing a few competitions now just to prepare for Scotland,” she said. Kennedy travels to Werribee and Melbourne weekly for dance practice with mum Bianca - her biggest fan. “I try not to distract her, but after every performance I praise her because I think she’s just wonderful,” Bianca said. “Dealing with the traffic was crazy, but now we’re used to it, so it’s just what we do. “I’m extremely proud. I didn’t do anything like that when I was young, so it was a bit of an eyeopener.” Bianca was not worried about her daughter travelling without her and said Kennedy was “quite mature”. “But it will be strange not having her around the house for so long. 11 GEELONG INDY Friday, 9 June, 2017

KICKING GOALS: Cats defender Jed Bews hands a graduation certificate to the star-struck Shannon Brown.
By Mandy Oakham
A jobs kickstart By Luke Voogt The Geelong Cats and a local job agency have teamed up with 23 young jobseekers to give them a unique kickstart into employment. The Cats Match program was purr-fect for Geelong fan Shannon Brown, who hopes to line up work at a Lara horse farm. “I liked the idea of training with the Geelong players,” she said. The 24-year-old from Leopold works as cashier, but described herself as under-employed. “I’m looking for more hours,” she said. “It can be hard for people to get work in Geelong.” “There are so many people in the same boat, and they’re all applying for the same jobs.” She hoped a job at the animal farm would give her the chance to work at children’s parties and help people with a disability. “I like working with children and animals,” she said. Kelli Brne was also among the 23 who graduated at the inaugural program Friday. The 26-year-old has been out of work for near-
ly eight months, despite 10 years’ experience in customer service. “I’ve been absolutely flat out looking for work - I’ve applied for hundreds and hundreds of jobs,” she said. “I’ve been to 30-plus interviews but have got nowhere." But Kelli said she was “100 per cent more confident” after the course. “I have an interview tomorrow and the next day,” she said. “I’ll just have to keep trying.” The job seekers were “supportive” and would drive each other to interviews, Kelli said. And while Kelli is yet to find a new job, she did make a good match - of sorts: “I met my partner on the course. He’s now working full time in a bakery. So that was a funny success story for Match Works.” The jobseekers took on training and health and wellbeing sessions with the Cats Simonds Stadium, as well as tutorials on interview skills and presentation. Eleven have found work while a further five were going through interviews, MatchWorks executive director Renae Lowry said.
The campaign to prevent violence against women in the Geelong region has received a $120,000 boost. Women’s Health and Wellbeing Barwon South West (WHWBSW) will use the funds from a new government grant to support projects aimed at preventing violence against women. These projects will involve councils, schools, sporting clubs, as well as community groups and workplaces. WHWBSW chief executive officer Emily LeeAck said the grant would be used to develop new activities, programs and partnerships to prevent violence against women and children. “This funding is very important for our region. Domestic violence is a whole-of-community problem which can only be prevented with
a whole-of-community approach,” Ms Lee-Ack said. “This funding will boost collective action across the Geelong region aimed at improving gender equality and respect for women - which is at the core of preventing violence against women. “With one woman, on average, dying at the hands of her former or current partner in Australia in each week, we know that domestic violence is a national emergency,“ she said. Victoria Minister for Prevention of Family Violence, Fiona Richardson, said that communities working together had the greatest impact on reducing family violence and violence against women. “Prevention will only be effective when the whole community is involved in changing attitudes and challenging the behaviours that can lead to family and gender-based violence.”
Three charges after one-punch death By Mandy Oakham A man has now been charged with the involuntary manslaughter of former Ocean Grove man Matthew Bate in San Fransisco last week. American prosecutors have decided not to pursue a murder charge against the Californian man accused of the one punch killing of Mr Bate on Friday 2 June. After reviewing the case, District Attorney spokesman Alex Bastian said David Murillo was charged with three lesser felony counts: involuntary manslaughter; assault; and battery. Mr Murillo, a 34-year-old from Hesperia, northeast of Los Angeles, has appeared in court where- bail was set at $100,000. Media reports say Mr Murillo, whose family was in court for the appearance, is likely to remain behind bars. Mr Murillo was initially arrested and booked into San Francisco County Jail for murder after Mr Bate suffered what police described as “severe

Super sized gift Geelong shoppers have raised $27,326 for the Barwon Health Foundation to redevelop the Andrew Love Cancer Centre. The funds will allow the foundation to increase the number of treatment chairs at the facility and ensure its pharmacy is more accessible to patients. Shoppers and supermarket staff raised the money through a series of trivia nights, golf days and tin rattling at 14 supermarkets in Geelong and south-west Victoria. Barwon Health Foundation’s Hayley Johnston said the foundation was grateful for the latest fundraising efforts. “It’s fantastic to have such dedicated support from Coles, especially here in the Geelong region. “We are very grateful to the Coles team members and local supporters who have donated to the cause, there is no doubt these funds will dramatically impact the services we are able to provide to the Geelong community.” Coles regional manager Jamie Ellery presented Barwon Health Foundation with a cheque on Thursday.

Uni funding cuts will be damaging By Mandy Oakham Deakin’s Vice-Chancellor has blasted the proposed university funding cuts, claiming they will do major damage to the Geelong community and economy. Vice-Chancellor Professor Jane den Hollander said the cuts would impact the Geelong economy by affecting investments into the Geelong Innovation Project and the development of business partnerships. “In Geelong, reducing our income by 2.5 per cent for two years running, will erode our ability to commercialise new products, processes and
applications and most of all, it will impact on our capacity to continue to help Geelong’s economy transform and to continue to create the jobs of the future for the community we serve across the region,“ Professor den Hollander said. “Carbon Revolution, Carbon Nexus and many others would not be where they are today if the university had not had funds to invest to support the creation of the jobs of the future in Geelong. “Deakin’s examples of innovation, acceleration and product incubation fit exactly with what has been emphasised by the government’s own national innovation and science agenda, so it is
concerning that the proposed cuts to higher education seem to contradict this agenda.” Professor den Hollander said that the cuts coming alongside an increase in university fees was creating an unnecessary burden for students. “We should be supporting and nurturing the next generation. The double whammy of higher uni fees and the impact of the housing affordability crisis is unhelpful. We should enable the next generation to be the smartest they can be,” she said. Earlier this week nine universities serving some of the country’s most disadvantaged and
regional communities added their voices to the growing chorus of strong opposition to university cuts and at the same time a statement from the Group of Eight universities called on the Senate to block the government’s proposed higher education legislation. The latest moves follow the statement by Universities Australia Chair Professor Margaret Gardner, declaring the sector’s unanimous opposition to the proposed university funding cuts and student fee increases, and majority opposition to the Bill as a whole, after Vice-Chancellors met on 16 May.
NATIONAL RECOGNITION: Professor Svetha Venkatesh recently won an Australian Laureate Fellowship.
Paves way for machine thinking By Mandy Oakham A Deakin professor has cracked the secret code of success with her research aimed at teaching machines how to think and learn. Alfred Deakin Professor Svetha Venkatesh, who is the director of the Geelong-based Centre for Pattern Recognition and Data Analytics, has been awarded an Australian Laureate Fellowship. To understand her research the professor explained that teaching machines how to think is like developing recipes for humans. Through analysing huge amounts of data the professor’s research is able to identify patterns in that data and then produce algorithms which can then be used to help them think in the same way as human beings would use a recipe to help them bake a cake. For example using this model a machine such as a street camera could be given the “recipe“ to identify different behaviours as suspicious or normal. The security implications of this research are very obvious, she said. “Everybody is always interested in security issues,” Professor Venkatesh said. “It is very exciting to think that this kind of research is being done right here in Geelong. “The possibilities of this research are truly limitless, and I hope the next stage of my work may use these principles to develop personalised medical analysis capabilities.” The principles developed by her research have been applied into real world uses such as predicting suicide risk factors in patients presenting in emergency departments and an app which can help kids with autism gain basic learning skills. Deakin Vice-Chancellor Professor Jane den Hollander congratulated the Deakin researcher on her award. “We are particularly delighted for and proud of Professor Venkatesh, who has long played a leadership role in demonstrating to other Australian women just what is possible to achieve in the field of computing and pattern recognition globally.” As a Professor of Computer Science, Professor Venkatesh is one of Australia’s leading experts in pattern analysis and her work has led to two successful start-ups.

Reusing and recycling at Viva Energy Geelong Refinery Like most manufacturing businesses, Viva Energy generates waste from our production, maintenance and administration activities. We have a waste management program that seeks to eliminate, reduce, reuse, or recycle waste. If this cannot be achieved, all waste products are then treated, used by other industries or disposed of appropriately. World class recycling Waste management practices at Geelong Refinery are recognised as world-class, with an impressive 100% of all waste water from our operations being recycled back to the refinery. Where possible we reuse products either within the refinery or supply products for reuse by other industries. Since 2013 we’ve diverted approximately 1,300 tonnes of catalyst, a material used to split hydrocarbons in the
refining process, each year from landfill for reuse in the cement industry. Sulphur, another bi-product, is reused in industries such as fertilizer manufacturing and spent caustic from the refinery is sent to our Clyde terminal where it acts as a food source in a treatment unit onsite and is also neutralized in our water treatment plant. Other waste materials including steel, soil and timber are recycled through our onsite waste transfer station. Creating compost from waste We treat hydrocarbon sludge waste in Geotubes™ where water is removed by seeping through a specially designed membrane. The remaining material is processed by mixing with mulch, which is biodegraded into compost that is used in the parkland that surrounds the refinery, feeding more than 100,000 native trees that we’ve planted over many years.
Saving 1.5 billion litres of drinking water each year The Northern Water Plant is a unique, state of the art water recycling plant that saves 1.5 billion litres of drinking water, the equivalent of the water used in 10,000 homes, each year. The project, valued at over $100 million, resulted from a 10 year successful partnership between Geelong Refinery, both the state and federal governments, and Barwon Water. 100% of the water used in refinery processes, known as trade waste, is sent to the Northern Water Plant for treatment and then returned to the refinery where it is reused over and over again. In addition to partnering in the construction of the Northern Water Plant, we have instigated programs which have increased the amount of recycled water used at the refinery. Last year the refinery sent 180 million litres of water to the treatment plant and our target is to use at least 90% recycled water across the site.

Letters Look at a book If ever there was a time that we wanted people to spend fewer hours in front of televisions and electronic devices, it’s now. Wouldn’t it be terrific if more people were to wander into a library and remember the magic of books? Some may forget what wonderful places they are - treasure troves of the unexpected - places of learning and whimsy for young minds and those stretching the decades. Forget the broody, silent libraries of old. These days, they are places of colour and revelation expanding beyond bookshelves and books. It beggars belief, then, that the City of Greater Geelong wants to close three libraries - Chilwell, Highton and Barwon Heads. I appreciate they come at a cost - the Barwon Heads library creates a $57,000 a year bill. Yet this seems almost irrelevant when the same organisation sees fit to build a $45 million library and history facility in Geelong. It is a marvellous thing - no doubt about it. But should it come at the expense of smaller, localised and much-loved facilities in the extremities of the shire? They may not be flashy - but they do support learning, community connections and a service for those who perhaps cannot get to the Geelong HQ. The Barwon Heads facility in particular is special due to its physical connection to the Barwon Heads Primary School which uses, and staffs, the library during school hours. I am sure there is a simple solution to this problem. It will involve talking, listening and understanding. The council is capable of all these things. It is capable of reversing its decision. Simon Ramsay Member for Western Victoria
No fracking solution Lindsay Brown claims (Letters, 2 June) the problems caused by fracking have been “solved”. If he means the process by which government “bully boys” visit victims, and intimidate and threaten them until they are too scared to go public - then I’d say the problem still exists. As far as I’m aware, the fracking industry continues to use toxic, carcinogenic chemicals in the

extraction process. It continues to pollute and ruin once-productive farmland and suburban real estate. It has caused permanent poisoning of underground aquifers; and toxic waste water continues to flow into rivers and lakes, which in many areas are also the town water supply. Whole towns in America have been forced to vacate and move because of the drinking water issue. Some farmland has become worthless because there is no usable water for irrigating crops. Fracking’s “failsafe” method of containing and capping bores with a sealing concrete is flawed. Actually, most of these “seals” fail immediately, while others eventually crack, leaking chemicals back into the soil and water. The “authorities” for overseeing this industry in America are totally corrupt and beholden to the many powers. Fracking remains an unsafe and untrustworthy practice. There is ample evidence on the internet to support my claims. The new paradigm is sustainable life on Earth, now and into the future. Stop using the planet as a quarry, rubbish tip, intravenous pin cushion and exhaust vent. Start creating a smarter, cleaner, brighter existence for generations to come. Eventually human impact will dictate these changes anyway, so let’s start now and guarantee success.

Blowin’ in the wind Last Friday, mid-morning, it was very noticeable that something was seriously amiss with the Mt Mercer wind farm. None of the 64 turbines were operating. They looked like a forest of sad, dead trees. This wind farm is expected to power 74,000 households. Unfortunate for those households, wherever they may be. Would the politicians of all persuasions, most of whom care not a jot for us, please explain? While the turbines aren’t producing, the spoils continue to flow freely to union superannuation funds, “host” farmers, foreign nationals and states and a myriad of hangers-on. Thanks to consumer subsidies. It is amazing how blase we are about being taken to the cleaners. Kathleen Hart Grovedale
Council’s concern about graffiti vandalism is slightly misplaced. Many of our youth have no career path, no prospects other than interminable training courses for non-existent jobs, generally not a lot to do, and perhaps not much to look forward to. And you expect them not to entertain themselves in other ways? Any child psychologist knows that a kid with nothing good to do will find something not so good to do, just to have something to do. Council might better spend its alleged hundreds of thousands of dollars for graffiti prevention on a youth centre or keeping libraries open. Gary Oraniuk Geelong West
Not sweet on sugar Congratulations to Barwon Health for phasing out all sugary drinks from vending machines and cafeterias across each of its sites. Hospitals and health services have a key role in keeping our community healthy and we know there is absolutely nothing healthy about sugary drinks. Sugary drinks are packed with empty kilojoules, adding to our waistlines but not providing us with any nutritional value. One in nine Victorians drink sugary drinks every day - they are the largest source of added sugars in our diet. Removing sugary beverages and replacing them with water in public places - like hospitals - is an important part of creating healthier environments for Victorians. It’s fantastic to see Barwon Health supporting their patients to make healthier choices. VicHealth is passionate about getting more Victorians active and eating well to enable them to live happier and healthier lives. By 2023 we’re aiming to get 200,000 more Victorians eating a healthier diet and in particular, to see people choosing water and healthy food options over soft drink and takeaway foods. I commend Barwon Health for demonstrating how the healthy choice can be made the easy choice. I hope to see other health services across Victoria follow their lead. Jerril Rechter VicHealth
The Metro Tunnel will free up Melbourne’s biggest bottleneck All our train lines meet in the centre of Melbourne, and the City Loop has kept the whole network free-flowing. But Victoria’s population has grown and the City Loop is now full, which can tie up services. That’s why we’re building the Metro Tunnel. It will create more space and deliver five new underground stations at Arden (near North Melbourne), Parkville, two under Swanston Street, and Domain under St Kilda Road. Less congestion on our rail network means your journeys into the city and Southern Cross Station will be easier and more reliable. You will also save time in reaching key destinations around Melbourne, such as: > > >
Parkville’s world class hospital and education precinct Albert Park, the Shrine of Remembrance and the St Kilda Road arts precinct Employment, retail and dining hubs in the CBD
It’s Victoria’s biggest ever public transport project. There will be disruptions as we build it, but it will deliver many decades of benefits. See if you’re affected at metrotunnel.vic.gov.au

FINALLY FRIDAY
The songs of his musical career By Luke Voogt West End veteran Philip Gould will perform the songs which made his career at Musical Mornings next week in Geelong. Gould holds the Australian record for the longest continuous leading role on the iconic London theatre strip, playing Billy Lawlor in 42nd Street for two years. “I’ve been told that it still stands today,” he told the Indy Monday. “It was more than 900 performances.” Gould was born in 1957 in Melbourne and grew up in West Heidelberg. “It was pretty rough at the time,” he said. “There were shootings and stabbings going on at the bowling alley just a couple of kilometres away from where I lived. “I believe it’s calmed down a bit. I hope so because my mother still lives there and she’s 90.” Both his parents were vaudeville performers and his mother was keen for her children to follow in her footsteps. “I was the youngest of three,” Gould said. “I was her last try at getting someone to take on the business.” A truck ran over his leg when he was four, so his mum signed him up for tap dance as “therapy”. “They set it incorrect so my foot was facing outwards and the knee was straight ahead,” Gould said. “It’s pretty straight now." Gould’s career flourished, with the then-teen performing on Johnny Young’s Young Talent Time from 1971 to 1976. With theatre experiencing a downturn in Australia, Gould went over to England with fellow actor and friend Caroline O’Connor.
THEATRE CLASSICS: Philip Gould will perform the music which made his career, with Michelle Fitzmaurice.
“I’d just finished doing a tour of West Side Story in ’84 and it looked really grim on the theatre scene,” he said. “She showed me the ropes there.” Gould spent the next 14 years performing across the UK. “I loved it,” he said. “For a single person moving around there was so much happening there.” He fondly remembered playing alongside Princess Diana in a Covent Garden show in 1986 and holding her hand during the curtain call. “She was lovely,” he said. Gould began moving back to Australia in 1996, where he played in a production of Crazy for You. It was a dream role for Gould, who was thrilled to “do my own stunts” and “throw myself around the stage”. Gould will join award-winning singer and actress Michelle Fitzmaurice, and compere Philip Wheeldon for Great Composers of London’s West End next week. “I really like working with those two people,” he said. “There’s none of that ego business going on - we just get on with it really.” Together they will perform the classic tunes from plays like Cats, Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables at Geelong Performing Arts Centre next Wednesday and Thursday. “It’s covering a lot of tastes in music and I get to do a bit of dancing so that will be nice for me and hopefully the audience.” The father of six has been performing musical concerts for the last decade, rather than travelling “six months at a time” with major productions. “Big productions are pretty hard on a family when they rely on you to be there,” he said. “These concerts are a godsend - they sort of keep my hand in performing.”

Moss rocks with killer, not filler By Luke Voogt
FIERY CLASSICS: Orchestra Geelong in action.
Beethoven fire unleashed Sunday One of Geelong’s “best kept secrets” will unleash the classical fire of Beethoven next Sunday. Orchestra Geelong will end its Classic Fire concert with Beethoven’s 5th Symphony, said orchestra promoter Neville Barwick. The opening notes have become symbols of hope and aspiration and ultimate achievement, he said. “Rarely has a rhythm reached so deeply into the human psyche to energise and anticipate as this one.” Portarlington’s Mark Sheill will conduct the orchestra as it performs Beethoven’s Egmont
Overture and the works from Mozart and Australia’s Alfred Hill. Mr Barwick described the orchestra as one of the city’s unknown treasures. “People from all walks of life from the Geelong and Bellarine community formed Orchestra Geelong 27 years ago,” he said. “As a not-for-profit community based organisation, its mission is to make great music readily accessible.” The concert takes place at George Logie-Smith Auditorium, Geelong College on 18 June. Rock veteran and former Cold Chisel member Ian Moss will bring his best to Geelong as he tours with the album that made his career. Moss’s 1989 debut album, Matchbox, was all “all killer and no filler”, he said. “It should be, it took me long enough to get it out,” he said. “We’re a couple of years off the 30th anniversary for that album. “I might be biased, but I don’t think it’s got a bad song.” Moss wrote the album, which features the catchy classic Tucker’s Daughter, after splitting with Cold Chisel. “We sort of got on each other's nerves so much we couldn’t wait to get away from each other,” he said. Moss said after leaving the band it was daunting with no mates “to lean on”. “I kind of didn’t really do anything for a couple of years,“ he said. “It took a little while to get used to.” But Moss put the writing skills which created Chisel’s Bow River to work and the record won Album of the Year at the Aria Awards in 1990. The Sydney-sider said it had been a while since he had been to Geelong. “It’s kind of off the beaten track for me,” he said. “When I do go, it’s usually to play a gig.” Moss will perform Tucker’s Daughter along with few Chisel classics like Choir Girl and Saturday Night at the Gateway on 17 June. “I’ve been careful to come up with my own versions not just be a Cold Chisel jukebox,” he said.
NO FILLER: Ian Moss will rock Geelong next weekend. Moss has been touring since February and has been busy recording his first album in eight years. “I’m doing the last track now,” he said. I’m definitely showing off a couple of new songs. “There’s a song called Broadway which seems to be captivating people just with the opening line. “It’s amazing - it can be difficult to get 100 per cent of people’s attention in a pub, but the room just goes dead quiet.”

FINALLY FRIDAY Regal styles of talent are on show By Luke Voogt The artists of Anglesea are inviting visitors to witness their talent at the town’s annual art show over the Queen’s Birthday weekend. The 32nd Anglesea Art and Craft Show will feature more than 70 artists, said exhibition coordinator Pat McKenzie. “There is more to Anglesea than its water views. It’s the art - and (Queens Birthday) weekend it’s on show. Don’t miss it.” “The show is not only an opportunity to see artwork on display, but also see artists ply their style with drawing and watercolour demonstrations.” This year Bellbrae artist Catherine Brennan will judge the show’s multitude of categories, including a new “Indulgence” Award. “It is an opportunity to recognize the great
work artists do to make this town vibrant,” she said. All artwork is for sale as well as jewellery, glass, pottery, mosaics, felting, photographs and handcrafted cards. “Most locals will proudly purchase their favourite local art piece to display at home,” Ms Brennan said. “Visitors can walk away with a souvenir that not only support local artists but is authentic, local and beautiful.” But Mr McKenzie said the most coveted prize was the People’s Choice Award. “We want visitors and locals, young and young at heart, to visit, enjoy and vote,” he said. Mr McKenzie said Surf Coast Mayor Brian McKiterick, “a passionate supporter of local artists”, will open this year’s show at 7pm Friday. The show runs at Anglesea Community Hall Saturday to Monday.
WINNING: Bargain hunters celebrate their finds last year.
Antique hunt on Geelong’s Bluebird Foundation has invited the city’s bargain hunters on a quest to raise money for music next week. From 14 to 21 June, teams of up to four will purchase second-hand items from local op-shops to raise funds at auction, Bluebird co-founder Bron Lawson said. “Last year the winning team managed to purchase an antique silver bangle for $1.50 from an op shop. It later sold for $180! “Bargain hunting is a great way to be part of a fun event and raise some money for charity at the same time.” The shoppers will put their thriftiness and imagination to the test searching for vintage and antique items before they go under the hammer. The team that makes the most money will win a weekend escape for four to Queenscliff, staying

at the Bon Accord. “But of course, they won’t be the only winners, as all money raised will support Bluebird Foundation’s programs in the Geelong region,” Mr Lawson said. Bluebird Foundation runs music, visual arts and theatre programs for children, youth and adults around Geelong. “We are a small organisation that makes a big difference by making every dollar count,” Mr Lawson said. Entry is $100, and each team will have a week and $80 to find Geelong’s undiscovered treasure. The items will go on sale at Kerleys Auction Rooms from 1pm on 27 June. ADVERTISING IN THE INDY REALLY WORKS I advertised my orange peel powder supplement only in the Indy and a Deakin professor phoned me about researching it – he saw the ad.
Men need to step up to their health Australian men often put off seeking medical help until it’s too late, according to St John of God Geelong Hospital’s Noel Ryan. “One of the things I’ve learned through 20plus years in health is that men are very slow to act on symptoms,” he said. “Typically, men will wait until the symptoms are out of their control before they seek access to health care.” As the nurse unit manager of the hospital’s emergency ward, Noel urges men to be more proactive in seeking help early. “Men will often come to the emergency room with their wives who are the ones that do the talking,” he said. “It would be a daily occurrence that someone comes in thinking their symptoms are not important or urgent.” So Noel is urging Geelong men to get to the Men’s Mini Health Expo at St John of God next Tuesday. Organisations including GMHBA, Australian Hearing and Geelong Rehabilitation Centre will offer free eye, ear and blood-pressure tests, along
with a range of health information for Men’s Health Week. No appointments are required for the health checks, which attracted more than 100 men in 2016. “The health checks are a way of encouraging men to be more proactive in preventative health care,” Noel says. “I think the variety of checks that we’re offering focuses in on some key areas. “Eyes, ears and blood pressure aren’t something that people are going to notice, these are things that are less obvious.” The 46-year-old father of three admits even he forgets to check his health annually. “My wife reminds me that I’m due,” he said. Men’s Health Week is vital to preventative health, especially with Australia’s aging population, Noel said. “Men’s health issues don’t get promoted enough. It’s important that every man establishes a good relationship with their GP and isn’t afraid to seek help if they’re unwell.”
Advertising in the Geelong Indy’s been amazing.

My powder also sold out at Diversitat Wholefood in just days. If it wasn’t for the Indy the opportunities that have opened up for me would never have happened.

With 40 years in the business, Barwon Tyre Centre’s Graeme McMahon has its customers’ tyre needs covered. Graeme has watched the industry evolve to offer the large variety of brands and types available today. “I’ve seen plenty of changes in the tyre industry in that time,” he said. “We used to have five manufacturers in Australia. There are 40 different brands now - if not more.” Graeme purchased Barwon Tyre Centre eight years ago and works beside his son Luke, who has followed in his footsteps since the age of 14. “He’s done a mechanical apprenticeship so he can do both the tyre and mechanical side of things,” Graeme said. Graeme said he takes the time to find out his customers’ requirements and financial situation. He has everything from “entry level” to top brand tyres. The company also does mechanical work, including major and minor services. “The personalised service is what we pride ourselves on,” he said. “A lot of our customers are repeat business and we get to know them by their name.” Graeme, 56, hopes his son can take over the family owned business when he retires. “But only if he behaves himself,” he joked. The business has sponsored Camp Quality for eight years and supports the Belmont Lions Football Club and the Belmont and Highton bowls clubs. Graeme is also keen “help the local schools” by with work experience and currently employs a local apprentice. The Barwon Tyre Centre offers a courtesy car service.
Customers rely on the fine-tuned expertise of German Automotive to ensure they are prepared for any lengthy trip. General manager Ben Buckle said German Automotive always tries to improve its service to customers. The German Automotive team has the latest equipment and specialises in European brands, specifically Volkswagen, Mercedes Benz, Audi, Skoda and Porsche. “We’re set up to dealer standard for these brands and take great pride in meeting the needs of our customers who have come to rely on us over the years,” Ben said. “We’ve invested heavily in both training and state-of-the-art equipment and two of our staff recently returned from training overseas. “This allows us to work on current models with no effect on manufacturer’s warranty at all.” The team at German Automotive uses genuine parts sourced from European suppliers and seeks customer authorisation before proceeding with any major repairs. Road worthy inspections are available and customers can benefit from the use of courtesy vehicles and a drop off/pick up service around Geelong. The workshop is equipped with dealer-standard diagnostic equipment to quickly track down any vehicle problems. German Automotive is at 8 Autumn Street, Geelong West.

SPORT A wide and varied catch off Corio ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Last week’s wintery weather did nothing to slow anglers down with trout, tuna and everything inbetween on the chew. Inside Corio Bay anglers had an absolute ball with snapper, whiting, flathead, pinkies, garfish and large numbers of Australian salmon all featuring in anglers' bags. Peri Stavropoulos and I put in a few hours Sunday morning casting soft plastics around the Geelong waterfront, where we had no trouble in finding Australian salmon up to 1kg snapping up Berkley Gulp 3” minnows. We also managed a few trevally and flathead as a by-catch. Long cold winter nights are famous inside Corio Bay for large trophy snapper as this time of year they school over certain marks. Emily Whitford, along with her father Andrew, put anchor down on one of their favourite marks one night last week. After some time Emily boated an excellent sized snapper of 5.5kg. They also managed another smaller fish of about 4kg during the night too. Anglers fishing off land from Limeburners boat ramp banked plenty of garfish along with the odd pinkie snapper over the weekend, with silver fish under a float tempting the former. Around the corner at Clifton Springs, squid kept anglers entertained with the grass beds in three to four metres of water holding reasonable numbers of fish. A slow drift casting size 3 white colouration jigs got the job done with bag limit captures possible. Whiting were still to be had along the Curlewis bank with pippies and tenderised squid working
well on fish to 40cm. The deep water 10 metres or more out from St Leonards produced good-sized gummy shark to 10kg and fresh squid was a great choice for bait. Not too far away, the entrance to Swan Bay held some large squid to 1kg again drifting slowly worked well. The Surf beaches again gave anglers chasing salmon plenty of fun. Salmon up to 2.5kg were devouring lures cast from the beach and at night had a liking to blue bait and pilchards. Recently there has been a few mulloway taken at night by those trying for a gummy shark which are always a welcome by-catch. Heading west and Port Fairy and Portland both produced tuna although mostly school size. The 65 to 75 metre mark off Port Fairy was definitely a hot spot when the weather was more settled. Closer to home those launching out of Apollo Bay and heading south of Cape Otway crossed paths with barrel tuna who were keen on eating large skirted lures. These fish, which generally take well over an hour to subdue, this week reached just over 100kg. Freshwater anglers again found Lake Purrumbete hard to go past with trophy trout on the chew. Slow trolling the East bank at first and last light worked well along with casting lures on calm days into schools of minnow pushed to the surface. Lake Bullen Merri was a great option for those fishing from the bank with Chinook salmon taking powerbait and Tassie devils. The lake was kind to Michael Evans, who has put in some serious time over the years working it out. Michael landed numerous brown trout to 62cm along with a nice rainbow of 46cm using eco gear MW lures.

One-match ban for jumper punch
North Geelong’s Marko Stevanja worked hard but could not save his side from defeat. Picture: IVAN DUGANDZIC
Warriors relegation battle worsens By Josip Zilic The tough task of North Geelong Warriors getting themselves out of the relegation spots just got tougher, after a 2-0 defeat to forget at home against Kingston. Their next challenge is Bulleen Lions away on Saturday afternoon. The Lions have steadied their form recently - after three defeats on the trot they have had a win, and a draw to Green Gully. Bulleen have dipped into the transfer market with Pablo Caceres, Lewis Hawke and Lewis Italiano, a talented keeper from Wellington Phoenix, all having immediate impacts for their new side. North Geelong’s afternoon started sluggishly and they were lucky to not be down by three goals in the opening 15 minutes, with Kingston creating numerous goal-scoring opportunities for Damian Laconis and Chris Irwin, only to be wasteful early on. The home side were unable to lift their tempo, scrappy in possession, allowing numerous turnovers in the middle of park and unable to find
their range with wayward final balls and shots. Right before half time, the Warriors allowed a turnover that hurt them on the scoreboard. Matt Thorne and Andrew Doig turned to the referee to look for a foul instead of picking up an easy possession, allowing Irwin to take the ball to their goal. Marko Stevanja saved Irwin’s first attempt only for Irwin to shoot the ball back at him to finish off the goal. The start of the second half wasn’t any brighter for the Warriors, who were showing signs of frustration. That frustration grew further at 55 minutes when Laconis latched onto a ball on the edge of the box with the outside of his left foot, finishing past Stevanja. Micky Colina made changes to try and create some spark by introducing Kene Eze and Bobby Vidanoski, who gave them much-needed drive. But the quality of their finishes was not enough to impact the scoreboard. Opportunities getting slimmer for the Warriors, who will need a jolt to both output and teamwork to escape the relegation spots.
Geelong will accept the one-match ban to key forward Tom Hawkins for his jumper punch on Adelaide midfielder Matt Crouch on Friday night. Hawkins became the first victim of the AFL’s publicly declared crackdown on jumper and gut punches after the Match Review Panel (MRP) graded his strike on Crouch as intentional with low impact to the head. Cats coach Chris Scott said the club was not prepared to risk the extra one-match penalty if the challenge was unsuccessful at the tribunal. “We’ve decided that we won’t (fight the MRP’s findings),” Scott told Fox Footy on Monday night. “That’s a product of really studying the system. “We feel that the odds are so stacked against you ... with so little grounds to actually challenge things, that you’re really challenging a subjective view and by extension the stance that the AFL has made. “If we didn’t risk an extra week, we’d take it up for sure.” Hawkins will now miss the round 13 clash with West Coast at Domain Stadium by taking the early guilty plea, given the Cats have their midseason bye this weekend. However, had Geelong unsuccessfully challenged the striking charge at the tribunal, the
28-year-old would have been sidelined until round 15. Cats superstar Patrick Dangerfield did not mince his words when asked about his immediate reaction to the MRP’s verdict. “I don’t think it’s consistent at all,” Dangerfield told Channel Seven on Monday night. “I’m disappointed as a teammate, and I by no means condone the jumper punch, but we’ve seen it for the past month where there’s been incidents and nothing’s come of it - there’s been a few fines but all of a sudden there’s a suspension. “This is what frustrates fans (and what) frustrates players - there’s no consistency there.” After the 22-point win over the Crows, Scott labelled Hawkins’ jumper punch as “insignificant", saying the club viewed the key forward’s action as “more of a push than anything”. The Cats' coach also expressed his concerns that the Hawkins incident would turn into something “bigger than it should be” following the AFL’s recent crackdown. Hawkins was suspended for a week in the corresponding round last year for a similar punch to Greater Western Sydney co-captain Phil Davis. Meanwhile, the Cats have invited their fans to an open training session at 10am Saturday as the players enjoy their well-earned bye.
