In for a wild time Healesville Sanctuary’s Wine and Wildlife saw thousands of people from all around Melbourne pass through the sanctuary’s gates to enjoy a local tipple, and view all sorts of winged, scaly, and furry friends. Visitor Elly Robertson, from Kallista, enjoyed a glass of red and was treated to a serendipitous introduction to ‘Twiggy’ the tawny frogmouth by Healesville Sanctuary ranger Lottie Liddell. One of the Mail’s roaming photographers caught all the action from the Wine and Wildlife weekend and a gallery of all the festivites can be seen on page four. 169435 Picture: GREG CARRICK

Her work involves finding ways in which to improve support services and includes transforming developing, and implementing changes to the purposes of policy development around aged care. “Looking at services for older people, I know very few people who want to get old, and the whole image of aging is so negative.” “We should embrace aging, we’re living older as a community and we should embrace that, we are healthier and living longer.“ With roles and qualifications span-

ning nursing, psychology, sociology, research and business management, Sandra has plenty of experience in delivering policies to improve aged care services. Sandra said that although there been improvement in the aged care services and human services sector, there is still work to be done. “People feel a certain age and they feel society doesn’t want them, which is rubbish because our society depends on older people. The Queen’s Birthday Honours Awards have included one of the Yarra Valley’s very own. Each year for the Queen’s Birthday, Australia’s best and brightest are awarded for service to the country. Amongst those receiving awards was Sandra Hills, from Yering, who was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for her ‘services to aged care’. Sandra has spent a lifetime in aged care, and has been a strong advocate

for addressing and improving support services for the disadvantaged and elderly. Sandra said that she was surprised when she heard that she had received an OAM, and although she was ‘honoured’ to have been awarded one, she noted that there were many other people who should be recognised and said she was part of a wider ‘team’. “I’m just so overwhelmed, I didn’t really expect it and of course there are plenty of people who need to be recognised, and like many of these awards you accept it on behalf of those peo-

Where the wild things are wild By Derek Schlennstedt Winter warmers, a local tipple and a wombat or two; this year’s wine and wildlife saw thousands come to the Healesville Sanctuary to enjoy the Queen’s Birthday long weekend event. Over 4000 people passed through the sanctuary gates on Saturday and this was followed by just over 6800 people on the Sunday. With chocolate, cider, wine and music from Melbourne artist Rhys Crimmin, the event proved once again that wine and wildlife do in-fact mix. Mail photographer Greg Carrick was on-hand to capture all the ‘wild’ action.

Healesville Netball and Football Players will be playing under a new light with new lighting facilities put in place at the Don Road oval.

Shining lights at Healesville Netball players at Healesville Football and Netball Club at Don Road sporting complex are approaching defence and attack in a new light. Yarra Ranges Council has installed $90,000 worth of lights at the netball courts, thanks to a $70,000 funding commitment from the Federal Government, through Federal Member for Casey, Tony Smith. Ryrie Ward Councillor, Fiona McAllister, said the four new lights would ensure the club would continue training and playing games at the Don Road sporting complex well into the future. “The lights allow the teams to train and play in all conditions, including throughout the winter season when it gets darker during training in the late afternoon,” Cr McAllister said. “In previous years, the club had been forced to train on the oval when daylight saving came to an end. “The new lights will en-

able the club to schedule night games next year.” Recently, the Indigenous Dreamtime match was held under lights at Woori Yallock between Healesville and Woori Yallock. Next year’s Dreamtime match will be held in Healesville and Felix Fraraccio, president of Healesville Football Club, was ecstatic over the new facilities which will allow his club to hold night-time rounds. “We’re absolutely ecstatic and very happy,” Felix said. “We wouldn’t have been able to have next year’s Indigenous Round without these lights, so next year the game will be bigger and better.” “The addition of the new lights are a welcome change which gives everyone the capacity to use a dry area under lights if the grounds get wet, and it just further adds to the development of the sporting complex which, with all the new facilities, could truly be one of the great sporting complexes in the valley.“

Council will also be installing new lighting at Coldstream and Montrose in the coming months which were also jointly funded by Council and the Federal Government. Mr Smith said the lights at Healesville would be beneficial not only for the netballers at the club but also for other players who use the courts during competition. “I am committed to building stronger local communities and, through this funding, our local high-achieving netballers will have more options and flexibility when they play their games, with the additional option of evening competitions. “These lights will make a welcome addition to the sporting facilities in Montrose, Coldstream and Healesville and allow for even more people to enjoy the courts.” The project was made possible by a $70,000 Federal Government election commitment by Mr Smith and $105,000 from Council.

Sandra overwhelmed From front page “A huge number of people over 65 who volunteer their time - the whole shire would come to a standstill if older people didn’t donate their time.“ “So we need to ensure they get the support they need,“ she said. It’s not all work and no play though, and Sandra said that despite being very passionate about her job she does enjoy pottering in her garden in Yering where she and her husband John run an accommodation which is self sufficient in produce. “I think it’s something we feel strongly about, we’ve got the beautiful soil and have the capacity to grow, and what we don’t use, we give away, we don’t throw anything out.” “I get a lot of joy out of gardening - it’s all about work/life balance,” she said.

Letters Doggy delight A big dog appeared from nowhere as we walked along Lalors Road, bouncing around us, chasing cars and having great fun. He would not stop, nor could we catch him. A big thankyou to the young woman who stopped to help, and the couple in the ute who took the dog to the vet. Good point: the dog did have a collar and ID tag and the owner was found in the end. M. Macaulay, Healesville.

Wonder-ful effort (Mail movie reviewer) Seth Hynes gets it right about 95 per cent of the time with his movie reviews; however, with Wonder Woman he is 100

per cent correct. Gal Gadot, the Israeli actor, is terrific in the role and I hope that this movie is the start of a franchise because we need our heroes, whether real or fantasy. I can’t explain just why I loved this film, other than to say that I’ll be back for another helping of Wonder Woman! Stanley R. Burgess, Healesville.

For the better The continued politicisation of the CFA over the past year has been deplorable. The latest attack against reforms has groups opposing the concurrent tabling of presumptive rights compensation for firefighters and the fire services restructure.

The focus should not be on whether both pieces of legislation are tabled simultaneously, but more on the merit of each as stand-alone legislation. What many fail to realise is that each is vitally important to Victoria’s fire services and provide for a safer Victoria for all, as well as acknowledging the risks associated with firefighting. The long overdue presumptive rights compensation brings our fire services in line with, or better than, other Australian fire services and seeks to ensure all firefighters who serve their community are provided with compensation from certain occupational cancers deemed likely to have been obtained as a result of their service. The legislation to restructure the fire services also has merit on its own, as it will ensure Victoria’s fire services modernise, providing in-

ternational best practice emergency response for the protection of all Victorians. The creation of Fire Rescue Victoria and the regular review of boundaries will ensure emergency response is commensurate with the population density and risk profiles and not on what was required 60 years ago. The restructure will still see the CFA continue to be a strong, proud, well-equipped, world-renowned volunteer organisation, with high standard support, tools and systems. All that is required is for the proposed restructure to be supported by the community and firefighters, and implemented with vision and drive to enhance Victoria’s emergency response for the better. Glenn Mitchell, Healesville.

Public order the key Victorians have seen enough of violent criminals being released back onto our streets to commit more violent crimes. That is why Opposition Leader Matthew Guy has announced that if elected a Liberal Government will introduce minimum jail terms for violent criminals who are found guilty of a second serious offence, having been found guilty of a previous serious violent act. These minimum terms will be hefty and send a very loud message that we will come down heavily on those who think they can continue to defy the law and subject their fellow citizens to the indignity of violence, fear and intimidation. These changes are not only directed at violent gangs. They extend to all areas of our community where violence is all too prevalent. Domestic violence is a key area where it is absolutely vital

to punish re-offenders who think they can ignore the lessons of their earlier violent behaviour. There are many issues that we must deal with in order to address Victoria’s law and order crisis. Undoubtedly, drug abuse, mental illness and social dislocation all contribute to crime in our state and must be dealt with sensitively and appropriately. But we cannot expect to solve all of these issues if our government fails to enforce the most fundamental tenet of community safety - ensuring community standards and expectations are upheld. That is why we must ensure sentencing is kept in line with

community standards. If we fail to apply those standards we will be inevitably forced to accept the normality of crime and mass dysfunction. This is best understood by our police officers who deal with violent offenders on a daily basis. Police Association secretary Wayne Gatt has backed our plan, saying ‘while there is always an important place for rehabilitation, it is high time we accept that the worst offenders - those who time again threaten, hurt and terrorise our community are laughing in the face of courts when they are given sentences that fail to meet community expectations’. This announcement is part of a broader suite of policies that will be needed to make Victoria safe. A government led by Matthew Guy will make public safety our number one priority.

Our petrol prices near the highest

Wanted: an extra pair of hands or two

By Derek Schlennstedt Petrol prices in Healesville are some of the highest in Melbourne. Prices eased over the long Queen’s Birthday weekend as expected, however earlier in the week Comparethemarket. com.au highlighted the cheapest and most expensive suburbs for petrol in each major city. Residents in Healesville, Hastings, Kew, and Narre Warren North are paying the most when they fill up the tank at an average of 139.9cpl for the first quarter, this year. This was in comparison to the cheapest regions for petrol over the last quarter, which have been the Frankston and Cranbourne areas at 126.0cpl. Prices across the nation run on cycles, which can make it difficult for motorists to know when and where to fill up their car. Generally, in regional areas the volume of petrol sold is lower because there are fewer customers and although this is one of the reason petrol prices fluctuate there are several other factors that affect petrol pricing. Abigail Koch, spokesperson for comparethemarket explained price cycles. “Petrol prices in the major five capital cities run on a cycle of seven days to seven week. “Price cycles are where prices usually fall slowly over a period of time before jumping up and then falling slowly again as the cycling behaviour continues,” she said. Rod Thomas, president of the Yarra Glen Chamber of Commerce said that he would not think fuel prices would impact tourism. “Fuel prices are not what I’d consider to determine people’s travel arrangements, particularly on long weekends in the Yarra Valley,” Mr Thomas said. “Fuel prices don’t determine recreational travel.” “Fuel prices are determined by a range of factors - not all of them are totally transparent.”

By Wendy Williamson Are you a parent or do you have parenting experience as a grandparent or foster carer? Do you enjoy spending time with young children and would like to make a difference in your community? If the answer is yes, then perhaps you would like to commit a couple of hours each week to being a HomeStart volunteer. Your efforts will certainly be appreciated and you are likely to find the experience richly rewarding. “It was fantastic,” said mother of twins Bronwyn Paige. “When the year was up, it was hard to say goodbye to (Home-Start volunteer) Bernadette. We still catch up from time to time.” A voluntary home visiting service that offers practical support and friendship to families with children from newborn to five years of age, Connections Home-Start is based in Croydon and co-ordinated by Freya Dugan. Volunteers are fully trained and supported by the volunteer coordinator. A new eight-week training course for volunteers will commence shortly at Yarra Junction. Bronwyn was introduced to Bernadette when her twins were just a few months old. New to the area, with no extended family close at hand, she found the extra pair of hands Bernadette provided a godsend. “It was like having a caring, lov-

It felt like a wave of support came into my life,” said Bronwyn, whose twins are now two. There are plenty more families like Bronwyn’s in the Upper Yarra area looking to be matched with a Home-Start volunteer. “We are keen to grow the program

and are interested in hearing from people in the Upper Yarra area who would like to become volunteers,” said Freya Dugan. “It’s a great way to form new friendships, as volunteers train together one day a week for eight weeks and then meet up once a month. Longterm support is one of the pluses

of the program.” The next training program for volunteers will commence on 26 July. If you can commit to giving two hours a week of your time and would like to become a Home-Start volunteer, please contact Freya Dugan on 9724 2222 or email home-start@connections.org.au.

Best cookbook going around By Wendy Williamson A cookbook published by Warburton’s Signs Publishing has been announced as the ‘Best in the World’ in the ‘Health and Nutrition’ category of the prestigious Gourmand World Cookbook Awards. The annual awards have been described as the ‘Oscars’ of cookbooks and attract entries from more than 200 nations. Food As Medicine: Cooking for Your Best Health by experienced dietician Sue Radd was released by Signs Publishing in October. An exploration of how our dietary decisions can affect our physical and mental health, it

features 150 plant-based recipes alongside an explanation of the scientific research that supports the pattern of eating demonstrated in the recipes. The award was presented by Edouard Cointreau, chairman of the awards committee. The Cointreau family operate Le Cordon Bleu cooking schools around the world, along with a number of other significant food and food-related businesses. “There is no higher award in the cookbook world,” said the general manager of Signs Publishing, Andrew Irvine, who accepted the award at the May 28 ceremony in Yantai, China. “Standards are very high and

Platypus’s best mates By Derek Schlennstedt A mural of a platypus has been unveiled in Warburton to help raise awareness about the importance of keeping our local waterways healthy and litterfree. The painting has aptly been painted on a vacant wall which runs along the Yarra River track in Warburton and is next to the Yarra River - a local hotspot for platypus. The project is part of the Communities for Platypus program which is funded by the Victoria State Government’s Litter Hotspot Program and hosted by Yarra Ranges Council. Despite bad weather the local artist Jimmy Beattie completed the work on 7 June and the painting measures 20 metres in length and 3.5 metres wide. The entire work only took two days to complete, despite works being hampered by rainy

weather on 6 June. “In terms of challenges it’s mainly been the weather,” he said. “It’s mainly with the acrylic undercoats.” “The first day we did the undercoat and then the next day it was still wet, which is pretty much unheard of.” Jimmie said the community feedback had been incredible and he was happy with how the painting had turned out with the blending of the colours into the background. “The community's been so behind it and fantastic, people here are so passionate about the platypus, because it is so rare and so unique to this area,” he said. “To try and celebrate it is a really positive thing and we’ve tried to blend in the colours with its environment.” Julie Hanman, of the communities for Platypus Program said initiatives like this were vi-

tal for the preservation of local wildlife especially for platypus who were deeply affected by litter. “It’s about bringing awareness to where street litter ends up,” he said. “Unfortunately our streams can be affected by pollution, including waste and litter, which can injure or even kill platypus. The worst offending litter items are rubber bands, plastic packaging and fishing waste which can entangle and strangle platypus," she said. over the course of the two days of painting Jimmie hoped he would see a wild platypus, even getting up early to see if he could see one. “I’ve been looking out every time I hear a splash in the water and went down to the bridge at dawn but I think the water's running a bit too quick ... if we could see one it would be amazing, because it is something that’s so rare to see in the wild ZO720367

there is significant competition in each category.” Signs book editor Nathan Brown said the award celebrated the achievement of a team of people working together to produce a book that was both credible and attractive. “As a publisher, we have been publishing books on health, nutrition and positive lifestyle, based in Warburton for more than 100 years, so the success of this project follows in the best of this tradition,” he said. Long farewell a triple treat

Miles Curry from Healesville High School will spend a week living on less then 1.5 kilograms of food.

Refugee food for a week By Derek Schlennstedt Miles Curry, a Year 12 Healesville High School student will be living on the same food rations as a Syrian refugee as part of a national fund-raiser that highlights the plight of refugees. From 18-25 June, Miles will join more than 10,000 people in Australia by participating in the Act for peace ration challenge. For a week Miles’ diet will consist of 1.2 kilograms of rice, lentils, tinned sardines, tinned kidney beans, dried chick peas and 300 millilitres of vegetable oil.

He said he decided to take up the challenge when he was scrolling through Facebook and saw it advertised. “For one week I’ll be the on same rations as a refugee,” he said. “I’m going to have to give gym up for the week, which I go to three times a week, and really cut back on as much exercise as I can.” All the money raised by Miles will go towards supporting Syrian refugees including providing food rations, medical care, education and psycho-

social support. Altogether the act for peace challenge has raised $1,647,342 - enough to feed 5720 refugees for a year. Miles will have to ration out the amount he will be eating each day, and keep check on the amount he has left. “I have to ration it out day by day to ensure I don’t go through all my lentils or rice.” “it’s definitely going to make me appreciate meals more and I think it will really give me an appreciation of how good we have it in Australia,” he said.

St Brigid’s Primary School in Healesville held a very special farewell for three long-serving staff members on Friday 26 May. The three - Monica Grayling, Fran Belloni and Zona Wilson - were retiring after having between them given more than 75 years of service to the school. Monica worked in the school office for 30 years, during which time she saw some big changes, most significantly a growth in student numbers from just 100 to 340. “It has been great to see all the children over the years and see the next generation come along,” she said. She will miss the regular contact with staff and parents at

the school, where she has made some good friends, but she is looking forward to spending more time with her grandchildren and travelling around Australia with her husband. Fran Belloni spent her entire 35 years in the teaching profession in various roles at St Brigid’s, from deputy principal to student welfare and most recently as a Prep teacher. So will she miss St Brigid’s? “Oh gosh, yes! I’ve spent more than half my life there and made some life-long friends. It was like a home away from home. I’ll miss all the people I worked with.” Teaching, she added, was a fantastic vocation and one which she would definitely recommend. Fellow teacher Zona Wil-

son shares her passion. Zona has clocked up an impressive 50 years in the profession, the last 11 as a Reading Recovery teacher at St Brigid’s. She said she will miss the camaraderie of the staffroom, but she was looking forward to having more time to herself. She is planning to spend time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and travel around Australia. With such an accumulation of experience departing the school, it was unsurprising that the afternoon tea held in honour of the retiring staff members was very well attended by parents and staff. “There were even some staff members from past years, which was lovely to see,” Fran said.

Elizabeth had a power of energy OBITUARY By Derek Schlennstedt One of Healesville’s enduring members, Elizabeth Maile, passed away in April at the age of 84 after a long battle with cancer. Elizabeth Kathleen Maile was best known in Healesville as a kind and caring character with a flair for taking on new, and exciting projects. A bushwalker, mother and singer, Elizabeth was always busy working on her next fantastic project. When she and husband Gerry arrived in Healesville in 1986, that first project was starting the Yarra Valley Singers. It was during a bushwalk with friends, another one of Elizabeth’s projects, that the idea for the choir came to her. Elizabeth loved the bush and a bushwalking group she started for mothers attracted over 100 members, who on occasion would spend a weekend in the country. While her bushwalking ventures were popular, it was the Yarra Valley Singers which husband Gerry said was her pride and joy. Previously there was no choir in the Yarra Valley and from only a small group of six people the Singers have since grown to 70 members.

Her sister, Jacqueline Fuller, jokes that despite starting it neither she nor Elizabeth were very good singers. “We were out walking one day and someone began singing and she asked if they liked singing and they replied ‘yes’ but they hadn’t sung since school, so she said we should join a choir.” “But, of course there was no choir to join at that stage.” “So she came up to me and said ‘We’re starting a choir in Lilydale.’” “I said what for, and she said well because you said you would like to sing - I only said I wish I could sing, not that I wanted to sing.” “But it was wonderful to go along and belong to this choir. “She was like that, she would just spring up out of the ground and go, right, what will we do next,” Jacqueline said. Calling Healesville and the Yarra Valley home for over 40 years, Elizabeth was always involved in her community. An avid walker, Elizabeth began the Wee Willy Winkie’s walking group in Healesville, which was aimed at young mothers who had children in prams. During this time she also helped at Healesville Primary School, listening and helping children with reading problems.

It was because of her community involvement and focus that she was chosen to carry the Queen’s Baton for the Commonwealth Games in 2006. But unfortunately prior to carrying the baton, Elizabeth broke a bone in her foot. Ever determined to carry it, she was escorted in a wheelchair by police and limped the last 100 metres to hand the baton over to the next recipient. “In the end she was so determined she got out of the wheelchair and hobbled the last 100 metres to hand the baton over,” said Gerry, her husband. “She was always very determined in whatever it was that she put her mind to.” In honour of the contribution she made to her community, and the Ringwood Heights primary school where she ran many bushwalking programs with students, a tree will be planted and dedicated in her honour at the Maroondah reservoir on July 30. Friends are invited to attend the planting. Older sister Jacqueline said: “She was just an ordinary mum really, but she just couldn’t sit still, she always had a good idea about something.” “She has left a big hole in all our hearts,” Gerry said. The Mail expresses its condolences to the Maile family.

Husband Gerry said Elizabeth was a caring person who would always help others and be last in line for any handouts.

Guru helps promote your business when you’re on sale - you are then telling people ‘we’re cheap’ rather than ’we’re good’.” The sessions will look to encourage small businesses to realise the power of marketing, create a marketing budget at the beginning of the financial year and commit to a 12-monthly spend. “Corporate companies have got big budgets and engage highly qualified advertising people, whereas in small business you’re in charge of advertising, HR, inventory,” Mr Morgan said. “What we are doing is learning from the big corporates and distilling it down into a simple action plan that small businesses can take out and make worthwhile.” Mr Morgan is a former creative writer and business journalist with an MBA, and is also a regular media commentator. He has a passion for helping small and medium-sized businesses grow. “I am a small business owner myself,” he said. “My great passion is helping small businesses beat corporate - we are generally better.” All 50-minute sessions are free, with various seminar times available. Briefly Spur slip causes chaos A small landslip on the Black Spur over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend left thousands of holidaygoers stuck in traffic. It is believed the landslip happened on 10 June, just south of Dom Dom Saddle on the Black Spur and resulted in the road being reduced to one lane. Victoria Police issued a statement warning travellers intending on driving towards Eildon, Alexandra or towns in between to choose an alternate route - ‘alternatively, head to Yea, then down the Melba Highway to avoid the area’ in a Victoria Police post on social media. The landslip was the result of a large tree becoming uprooted on the low side of the road, which caused part of the city-bound lane to slide down the embankment. Geoff Stott of Healesville SES said it had been like that for three days, and that he believed it needed resealing. It was reported that during peak times, the traffic had built-up for several kilometres with some travellers waiting over 40 minutes. Those who were stuck in the traffic took to social media to voice their displeasure “Took over an hour to get through the spur,” posted Jodi. “When we got to the top of the spur it was backed up almost to the Narby (Narbethong) pub,” posted Sharon.

Seminars will be held at Marybrooke Manor in the hills on Tuesday 20 June, and the RACV Club in Healesville on Wednesday 21 June. Mr Morgan says one of the biggest mistakes small businesses make is they advertise sporadically instead of making marketing a core business function. “They ask whether they will do any marketing this month rather than what marketing am I going to do,” Mr Morgan explained. “That has two effects: they don’t buy the right advertising because they advertise casually rather than have a commercial arrangement and secondly, the temptation is there to only ever advertise

Short weekend big on food It may be the shortest weekend of the year, but there is plenty to fit in at the progressive winter wine and food festival, The Shortest Lunch on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 June. Attendees can explore the smaller, family-owned wineries of the Yarra Valley, and create their own adventure by grazing on entree-sized meals for main or dessert at each venue, while discovering the boutique wines on offer. Entry is only $15 including a souvenir glass, which provides access to all participating wineries. Whispering Hills owner, Murray Lyons, said The Shortest Lunch waa fun day for friends and family to discover wines they’d never tried and enjoy a casual festival atmosphere without the hustle and bustle. “The special thing about visiting the lesser-known, smaller wineries is the ability to meet those who actually make the wines and grow the grapes themselves,” Murray said. The festival map, menu, entry tickets or an earlybird ticket package can be accessed online at www.yarravalleysmallerwineries.com.au. The early bird package is available for just $65 and includes an entry ticket, souvenir glass, an entree meal ticket, dessert ticket and a voucher for bottled wine to the value of $30, providing you with a saving of 15 per cent. For those who would prefer someone else to drive, some bus tour operators will be offering services for The Shortest Lunch. This information can also be found

By Wendy Williamson By Derek Schlennstedt Each year around the middle of June, capacity crowds shuffle through the Warburton arts centre to enjoy a thrilling variety of internationally coveted movies and lesser-known local pearls. This year from Friday 16 June to Sunday 18 June, the Warburton Film Festival will celebrate movies of every kind from emerging local directors in the Yarra Valley to international movies from diverse countries. This year eight highly acclaimed contemporary feature films, including drama, comedy and documentaries from five different countries will be featured, and a special tribute will be given to the great Australian film director Paul Cox. Paul Cox was also a longtime patron of the Yarra Ranges Film Society and Warburton Film Festival Society and sadly passed away last year. Keith Wade, president of the Yarra Ranges Film Society said that despite being ill, Paul had tried to come to last year’s showing of one of his films. “He was a patron of the film society and he’s made some quite dramatic Australian films,” Mr Wade said.

“His last film was shown at last year’s festival and he was intending to come along and introduce the film. “He was quite ill but was determined to come and on the Saturday afternoon we heard the news he passed away.” The festival includes a variety of hand-picked movies and films, starting on the Friday night and going until the Sunday night. Its not just movies though and directors from some of the films will be there to introduce their work - including one of the most dramatic films of the festival, Tanna, which is a modern day Romeo and Juliet set on a remote Pacific island. “The most dramatic one is on Sunday, where we have the film Tanna and one of the co-directors is coming along to introduce the film.” “The festival and the films accommodate everyone, including movie buffs and people like you and me who are just enthusiastic about movies," Mr Wade said. Tickets are selling fast, so you’ll have to be quick. To buy tickets, call 1300 368 333 or email boxoffice@yarraranges.vic.gov.au.

Badger Creek is a special place with a unique history, stunning natural places, the iconic Healesville Sanctuary and a whole lot of community members who contribute to making it a wonderful place to live, learn and work. The public is invited to celebrate all things Badgers Creek next Sunday, 18 June, when the Badger Creek community comes together for a celebration from 11am to 3.30pm. The aim is to celebrate the Badger Creek community, raise the profile of local community groups and activities, bring the Badger Creek community together and also give people an opportunity to share their ideas for making Badger Creek an even better place for the community. “We are gathering people’s ideas for community

Fun beach-side romp By Seth Hynes Though it doesn’t leave much of an impression, Baywatch is still a fun beach-side romp. Hot-headed athlete Matt Brody (Zac Efron) is inducted into the elite Baywatch lifeguard squad. Meanwhile, the team begins investigating a drug ring operating on their beach. Baywatch is an enjoyable diversion with some surprisingly strong character writing. Mitch (played by the ever-dependable Dwayne Johnson), the leader of the Baywatch team, is the film’s protagonist, but Brody is the focal point.

Brody becomes quite sympathetic as vulnerabilities emerge from his brash exterior, and he gradually learns the value of helping people and being part of a team. The film discards the lifeguard soap-opera theme of the show for more of an offbeat crime drama feel, while also poking fun at the show’s titillating schlockiness. Unfortunately, these moods don’t mesh together well. The

investigation plot-thread is swiftly-paced and straightforward, but the humour is often forced and crass. I’m reviewing the Baywatch film from the perspective of a non-fan who has never seen the original show. Fans may be put off by the film’s satirical tone and flat gags. Thankfully, the bright and summery cinematography, impressive stunts and strong chemistry among the cast compensate for the weak humour. Unmemorable but fun and well-made, Baywatch is a decent sunny distraction from the cold Australian winter.

Thrills and spills in Round 8 By Cameron Hutchison AFL YARRA RANGES Round 8 had some surprises and drought-breaking wins. Division 1 Football saw Olinda, Monbulk and Woori Yallock get the wins they would have been expected to get. Healesville surprised Wandin with a big win, while there was a nail-biting draw between Mount Evelyn and Upwey. In Division 2, Yarra Glen got home after an injury halted play for 30 minutes. Belgrave, Seville and Yarra Junction were also expected winners. Netball saw Olinda, Monbulk and Wandin get the points but it was a bit closer for Mount Evelyn and Woori Yallock in the end. Division 2 saw Yarra Glen and Belgrave win comfortably, while Yarra Junction was challenged and Thornton-Eildon saluted the judges for the first time since late in the 2015 season with a win over Seville. After Wandin’s loss, they still share top spot with Olinda. Healesville and Woori Yallock are one game behind and Upwey-Tecoma shares fifth spot with Mount Evelyn. Yarra Glen, Seville and Belgrave share top spot in Division 2, with Alexandra and Powelltown making up the five. In netball, Olinda hold on to top spot with Wandin only half a game behind. The battle really is on for fourth and fifth spot. Belgrave are one game clear in top spot in Division 2 and should hold onto that position for the rest of the year. Yarra Junction and Yarra Glen look comfortable in second and third, but it is also a battle for fourth and fifth. Division 1 Seniors Football Olinda Ferny Creek 17.12(114) d Emerald 10.6(66) Olinda travelled to Emerald and certainly did not have this game in their holding until the last quarter. Olinda held a slim lead of two points at quarter time and were well held by Emerald. Olinda kicked 5.4 to 2.2 in the second to take a comfortable lead of 16 points into the main break. Emerald regrouped over the break and kicked 4.1 to 2.4 to claw back the margin to a gettable seven points at threequarter time. James Charge was on fire up forward and kicked 11 of Olinda’s final 17 goals. Olinda were impressive in the last holding Emerald goalless and piled on 7.1 to come away with a nice 48-point win. Olinda Ferny Creek Best: J. Charge (11 goals), L. Hill, M. Bonuda (1 goal), C. Beattie, K. Currie, E. Greenall (1 goal). Emerald Best: B. Wilson, W. Hansen, P. White, S. Anthony, L. Sheppard (2 goals), D. Volta. Monbulk 16.23(119) d Gembrook Cockatoo 2.3(15) Monbulk have their second win for the season after a huge 104-point win over Gembrook who are languishing with Warburton at the bottom of the ladder. The game started at a slow pace but Monbulk still managed to kick four goals to one to have a lead of 22 points at quarter time. Gembrook had a horror second quarter with Michael Langworthy and Shane Williams causing all kinds of trouble for them up forward and they failed to register a major in

the second, while Monbulk kicked 7.6 and the lead was now 70 points. Gembrook got on the scoreboard in the third with 1.1 but Monbulk did not relent and they kicked 5.5 to now be in front by 98 points at the final change. To their credit, Gembrook held Monbulk to only seven behinds in the last but the game was already run and won. Monbulk Best: J. Schille, C. Tibb, S. Van Seters, M. Langworthy (7 goals), S. Williams (5 goals), S. McBride. Gembrook-Cockatoo Best: R. Wilson, D. Leversha, L. Henzen, B. Jones, M. Wills, G. Hartridge. Mount Evelyn 12.14(86) drew with Upwey Tecoma 13.8(86) Mount Evelyn played host to Upwey on Saturday and it was absolutely the game to watch. Mount Evelyn got the early lead with a bit of a goal feast in the first with nine goals being kicked and a 9-point lead at quarter time. Mount Evelyn held Upwey goalless in the second and it looked like it was going to be a win for the Mounters as they took a 22-point lead at half time. Upwey outscored Mount Evelyn in the third, kicking 4.3 to 2.3 and the lead of 10 points was now achievable. Upwey finally got their game going in the last and kicked 5.2 to 3.4 to claw back the lead but ran out of time and had to share the points with Mount Evelyn and still share fifth spot on the ladder. Mount Evelyn Best: D. Wootton, M. Gibbons, L. Corrin, A. Chalkley, T. Chalkley (1 goal), J. Thompson. Upwey-Tecoma Best: B. Duncan, L. Burke, K. Grenda (1 goal), S. Dawson, H. Stanley, I. Krijt. Healesville 21.9(135) d Wandin 7.14(56) Healesville shares third spot on the ladder and have inflicted the first loss for Wandin this season after a surprise win on Saturday. Wandin were undermanned but you can only beat the side that is on the park and that is just what Healesville did. They got out to an early lead by 10 points in the first and were never headed or even looked in danger of dropping the game. Holding Wandin to one goal in the second is no mean feat while they managed to slot three themselves and take a 21-point lead into the main break. Healesville came out charged in the third and piled on 7.2 to 3.5 and the lead was 42 points at three-quarter time. Healesville answered any critics in the last and totally dominated the quarter kicking 8.3 to 2.2 to show Wandin a clean pair of heels and some food for thought for the rest of the season. Healesville Best: D. Anderson (1 goal), R. Woodford (8 goals), N. Aldridge, L. Daly, N. Mende, C. Warren (1 goal) Wandin Best: T. Hinds (1 goal), B. Harvey, M. Polkinghorne (1 goal), J. Del Giudice, R. Ross (2 goals), S. Barnard (1 goal) Woori Yallock 21.28(154) d Warburton Millgrove 4.3(27) Woori Yallock denied Warburton any joy on Saturday after outplaying them completely with a big 127-point win. Woori Yallock shot out to a 22-point win at quarter time. They held Warburton goalless in the second and peppered the goals themselves, kicking 5.8. The margin was 59 points at half time but could have been much worse if Woori Yallock were accurate in front of goal. Eleven shots at goal in the third from Woori but they only kicked three majors. The lead had extended to 79 points at the final change. If Woori

Healesville surprised with their encouraging win over Wandin. 169450

Asraf Davies in full flight during the Bloods' big win. 169450 Pictures: BETHANY HUTCHISON Yallock hope to be a serious challenger come September, they will need to clean up their efforts in front of goal. They managed to do this in the last kicking nine goals but they also slotted eight behinds. Warburton kicked two goals in the last to give their supporters something to cheer about. Woori Yallock Best: K. Busoli (1 goal), C. Smedley, B. Arnold, B. Monkhorst (6 goals), H. Smith (1 goal), M. Batten (1 goal). Warburton Millgrove Best: L. Weir, L. Barnard (1 goal), P. Hay, T. McKail, B. Clinch, S. Andueza. Division 2 Seniors Football Yarra Glen 13.12(90) d Alexandra 6.9(45) Yarra Glen sit atop the Division 2 ladder by percentage after an interrupted game on Saturday. The first quarter was tight with Yarra Glen kicking two goals to one and taking a lead of nine points into the second. The second quarter was much the same as both sides battled for any ascendancy. It was a low scoring affair in the second with another two goals to one in Yarra Glen's favour and a 15-point lead at the main break. It was anybody’s game but Aussie Smith and Lachlan Telford were causing problems for Alexandra with their attack and run at the footy. The third quarter was stopped for 30 minutes due to a serious injury to an Alexandra player but recommenced with 11 minutes to play in the third and Yarra Glen had a lead of 21 points at three-quarter time. In the final, Yarra Glen kicked 5.4 to 2.4 to come away with a good win at the final siren. Yarra Glen Best: A. Smith (3 goals), B. Binion (1 goal), J. Clare (1 goal), T. Russell, B. Marsh, C. Tait. Alexandra Best: J. Goonan, L. Ragg, J. Purcell, B. Woollard, S. Steiner, S. Heveren (1 goal). Belgrave 18.16(124) d Kinglake 8.16(64) Belgrave has shown Kinglake a clean pair of heels with a big 60-point win on Saturday. Kinglake are now sitting sixth on the ladder and in real danger of not making finals this year. Belgrave kicked 5.3 to 1.2 and had a commanding lead of 25 points at quarter time. The second quarter was tight with scores reflecting a tough game with Belgrave kicking 2.5 to 1.7. The lead increased to 29 points and was in reach of Kinglake if they could convert. Belgrave jumped to another gear in the third, kicking four goals to one and the game was now out of said reach. It was a goal feast in the last, Belgrave piled on seven goals while Kinglake chimed in with five, but it was all too late in the end. Belgrave Best: M. Johnson (3

goals), J. McDermott (1 goal), L. Foreman (7 goals), C. Power, P. Gough (1 goal), N. Thompson (1 goal). Kinglake Best: B. White, H. Prest, J. Butterworth (1 goal), L. White, B. Hamer, W. Graf. Seville 24.12(156) d Thornton Eildon 5.4(34) Seville made the trip to Thornton and hand the game in hand from the outset. They stormed to any early lead of 28 points at quarter time, kicking six goals to two in the first. They stalled slightly in the second, only kicking two goals to one and may have spent all their chips early. They lifted again in the third, kicking eight goals to one and the lead was now well out of Thornton’s reach. Mark Cecere and Nathan O’Keefe were a force in the forward line. Women to vie for cup By Effie Caloutas Yarra Junction and Mount Evelyn will go head to head in the inaugural Women’s Community Bank Cup on 17 June at Yarra Junction Reserve. The game will begin at 10am, before the senior men’s match at noon. The marquee match is an initiative supported by the Yarra Junction District Community Bank and the Mount Evelyn Community Bank. Director of the Yarra Junction Community Bank Branch, Jess Vickers, said it will be a great event for women’s football locally. “The Community Cup is a great way to celebrate the operation and growth of women’s footy,” he said. Yarra Junction and Mount Evelyn are two of nine clubs competing in the Eastern Region Girls Football League. Mount Evelyn has been one of the stronger clubs in the competition, while Yarra Junction has shown some positive signs.

Yarra Junction Football and Netball Club committee member, Georgia Strahan, believes it is important that everyone comes along to support the event. “Anything that is bringing people to come along is important to all competitions, including women’s football,” she said. “It’s important that we support women’s footy and the Community Cup, as it gives an opportunity for other young girls to participate in the near future.” Community Bank Director and Treasurer of the Yarra Junction Football and Netball Club, Sally Brennan, said without the support of the community banks, there wouldn’t be a women’s Community Cup match occurring. “We’re very appreciative of the support we get from local community banks,“ she said. “Without their support, a lot of initiatives and good ideas wouldn’t have been achieved.” Entry is free for the Round 7 encounter between Yarra Junction and Mount Evelyn.

Garside on Bag day WARBURTON GOLF WEDNESDAY Stroke and M. McGrann Bag Day - On a lovely early winter’s day, the ‘Bag day’ was fought for, with the talented Ian Garside qualifying with a creditable Nett 69. Clearly the course won, as most winning scores in this comp need to be in the mid60s. Steuart Hawke was the runner-up with 70. Balls went to 73. The NTPs went to Andy McMath, 9th and 15th, and Chris Fall on the 10th. SATURDAY Stableford - The best score for the day, with glorious weather prevailing, went to Clinton Toohey, with 37 points - new member whose handicap will surely shrink ‘very’ quickly. John Wheatley won A Grade with 36 points. Well done, John. The runner-up was Hatty Senior with 35. Balls extended to 32. The daily NTP winners were Geoff Fall 3rd, Tony Bickley 5th, Sean Kennedy 9th, Hatty 12th and to Kempton Senior 15th.

Gavin Crosisca tells of fighting addiction By Effie Caloutas The Healesville Football Club faithful heard a first-hand account on Thursday 1 June of the dangers surrounding recreational drug use. Collingwood premiership player, and former Ferntree Gully resident, Gavin Crosisca, addressed players and members, revealing how a rehabilitation facility changed his life forever. Crosisca told guests of how three months he spent with fellow drug addicts helped him in his efforts to become sober. “I never felt connected with the Collingwood Football Club,” he said.

but I was depressed and had low selfesteem.” Crosisca paid respect to his wife, Nicole, who took him to a rehabilitation facility and then an intensive residential rehabilitation facility in 2011, which changed his life forever. “I don’t know how she ended up staying with me,” he said. “God bless her.” Now a Qualified Intervention Professional at Alcohol and Help, and a Director of the Sober Living Housing Addiction Recovery Program, the former drug addict visits local football clubs to deliver messages about the dangers of illicit drugs.

“But I felt connected to a room full of drug dealers that helped me recover from my addiction to drugs.” Throughout his 28-year span as a player and coach, Crosisca was battling addiction to various drugs, including amphetamines (speed) and cannabis. Isolated and living on his own at Ferntree Gully, after his move from Queensland, the 1990 Collingwood premiership player expressed how isolation was the key part of his addiction to illicit drugs. “Isolation is the key part to drug addiction,” he said. “I had everything going for me,

“Cocaine messes with your mind,” he said to Healesville Football Club players and staff. “Avoid ice to start with. Be wary with what you do with your mates.” Healesville President Felix Fraraccio said that having a profile like Gavin Crosisca is just another way in providing awareness of the issues surrounding society. “Having Gavin is no different to Pink Day and Beyond Blue. It’s about promoting good health in the community,” he said. “It allows people to express themselves and find help.”
