BUYERS SHED CITY FOR THE GOOD LIFE MORE people are ditching the city life for a tree or sea change, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. CoreLogic research analyst Cameron Kusher said the latest internal migration data shows an increasing number of inter-state and intra-state population movements are to either sea change/ tree change regions or the outskirts of the capital cities. “Each year the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) publishes data on internal migration across the regions of Australia. Internal migration data counts the number of residents moving within the state as well as across state borders,” he said. According to the data, the Gold Coast
New data shows more people are choosing a tree change over the big city lights when it’s time to move. saw the most internal arrivals at 6428 persons over the 2015/16 financial year, a 39.4 per cent increase on last year and the first time the Gold Coast has seen the
nation’s highest rate of internal migration. The Sunshine Coast came in a close second with 6200 internal migrants over the 12-month period, followed by Melbourne’s West with 5491 and Geelong with 4216 internal migrants. “Of the top 25 regions for nett internal migration over the past year, 13 were located outside of the capital cities generally in areas either adjacent or close to capital cities,” Mr Kusher said. “These regions were a mix of sea change and tree change type locations. Interestingly, each of these regional markets has recorded an increase in nett internal migration over the year." Mr Kusher said the overall data indicated migration was gathering pace
in select regions of the country, a number of which were sea change/tree change areas. The data also showed an 8747 net internal migration loss over the same 12-month period for inner south-west Sydney, which Mr Kusher attributed to the high cost of living. “Sydney is increasingly shedding residents to other parts of the country and this is most likely linked to the high cost of housing. Coastal, regional areas of NSW and Victoria along with Melbourne and Brisbane appear to be significant benefactors of the deteriorating housing affordability in Sydney as an increasing number of people leave the city for more affordable locations,” he said. ●
