HURRY! SALE ENDS 30 JUNE
Budget season has well and truly arrived, with Southern Downs Regional Council ratepayers facing a 3.4 per cent rate rise in the new financial year, with the 2017-2018 council budget adopted by councillors yesterday. Charges for waste, water and wastewater will also increase by 3.4 per cent in the new financial year. Rates rose by 4 per cent in the 2016-2017 budget and the council has factored in a 4 per cent annual rise for the next decade, including
the 2017-2018 financial year. The annual increase is in line with the council’s ‘long-term financial forecast’ which is being closely monitored by the State Government, through the Queensland Treasury Corporation and the Queensland Audit Office. Councillors adopted the new budget at a special meeting held at the Warwick council chambers yesterday morning, Wednesday 14 June. The Queensland State Budget was also handed down this week, with the LNP Opposition blasting
the ALP Palaszczuk Government for ignoring regional Queensland, including Warwick and Stanthorpe. On the local front, the council budget contains a new pest management fee payable by rural landowners who the council deems are failing to control runaway weeds on their properties. Unless they can satisfy the council - by means of a ‘Control Works Form’ - that they have weeds under control landowners with parcels zoned Agriculture and Farming categories 1, 2 and 3, and Horticulture 1, 2 and 3 will pay a ‘special rate’ of

Owners of land zoned Residential 4, Commercial and Industrial (Town and Rural), Extractive and Special Uses will pay 30 cents in the dollar, also with a minimum $500 fee. All owners of the above-zoned lands must submit an annual Control Works Form to the council, but they can request an inspection of their land by council officers. Continued to page 3

New look for art studio Casey’s tips

In brief Mediation for fill objections A mediation session has been ordered by the Planning and Environment Court of Queensland in a case involving Warwick real estate agent Helen Harm and Bunnings. Mrs Harm lodged her appeal with the court late last year, and is trying to stop the movement of fill onto the site of a proposed new Bunnings outlet at the corner of Condamine and Canning streets in Warwick. She claims the fill would alter flood flows and cause additional damage to surrounding properties. The court this week ordered the parties, including the Southern Downs Regional Council, to take part in a mediation session chaired by the court Registrar next Monday 19 June. The appeal will then be further reviewed by the court on Friday 21 July.
with Sue Keong A big weekend at the Warwick Artists’ Group Art Studio saw artist John Wilson fly in for an artist’s talk and demonstration of oil painting followed by a new look and new feel for the art studio with a celebratory afternoon tea to thank the Southern Downs Regional Council and the volunteers. Council funded insulation at the studio for yearround use. Volunteers wanted The Southern Downs is known for being a destination where events from sporting to the arts happen, but not without volunteers. The Jumpers and Jazz in July team are in need of help with a variety of opportunities during this wonderful event. Don’t wait until the last minute - call into the Warwick Visitor Information Centre at the Town Hall and fill in a Volunteer form. A roster for volunteers who will staff a pop-up booth at the front of the town hall to sell programs and give out information is one the many placements available. Go online to volunteer at http://www.jumpersandjazz.com/volunteer Borderline exhibition The Borderline Artists Big Exhibition at the Stanthorpe Art Gallery in Weeroona Park is running from 10am to 4pm Tuesday to Friday and 10am to 1 pm Saturday from this Sunday 15 June to Sunday 16 July. Drug charges laid Police have charged two men with drug offences following a routine intercept at Ballandean south of Stanthorpe yesterday morning, Wednesday 14 June. Around 8am, a station wagon was directed to pull over to the side of the New England Highway for the purpose of a random breath test. Police will allege a subsequent search of the vehicle revealed three duffel bags containing about 48 kilograms of cannabis. Two New South Wales men, aged 55 and 33 have been charged with one count each of possession of dangerous drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia. They are due to appear in the Toowoomba Magistrates’ Court today Thursday 15 June.

Higher rates From page 1 Widespread concerns are held about the fee levels and the administrative workability of the pest fee plan, officially referred to as the ‘Invasive Pests Control Scheme’. A previously proposed five hectare threshold has been scrapped by the council as a result of community feedback that the scheme should apply to any and all land parcels of any size which harbour or could potentially harbour invasive pests. Operating result down on 2016-2017 The new council budget is projected to deliver a surplus of $7.3m, considerably less than the 2016-2017 budget surplus of $20.3m. The capital expenditure program for 20172018 sets aside $22.72m for capital projects across the council region. The council has not factored in any further borrowings in its ‘long-term financial forecast’, with the last borrowing being $5m in the 20132014 financial year for the Allora water pipeline. The council's current debt position is $22m, having been reduced by $8.3m over the past three years. More on the budget in the coming week at www.freetimes.com.au State Budget a real winner - for metro Queensland LNP Deputy Leader and Shadow Infrastructure Minister Deb Frecklington this week said regional Queensland “would always play second-fiddle to Brisbane under the Palaszczuk Government”. “Labor has ripped money from Regional Queensland to fund a project that funnily enough runs through several inner-city Labor held seats.” For its part, the Palaszczuk Government says its 2017-2018 State Budget will “support an expanded focus on creating jobs and economic opportunities in rural Queensland”, according to Minister for Rural Economic Development Bill Byrne. Mr Byrne said a targeted $5.2 million Rural Economic Development package is the centrepiece of a renewed drive to maximise investment, growth and support of rural communities. He said the budget would provide $1.3 million over two years to provide targeted help for fruit and vegetable growers to find and expand export markets. “Grants of up to $75,000 will be available to help producers better understand and exploit overseas markets,” Mr Byrne said.
Weather data gaps By Jeremy Sollars Reduced volunteer numbers and the lack of supervisors at the Stanthorpe Visitor Information Centre have meant recent weather records for the Granite Belt are woefully incomplete. Just weeks away from the Snowflakes in Stanthorpe Festival - and with the possibility of snowfalls on the Granite Belt again this year - the Free Times can reveal that official Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) temperature and rainfall data for Stanthorpe for the entire month of January this year is non-existent and most of February and December 2016 is also missing. Monthly data from March up to this week is also full of holes, with numerous maximum and minimum temperatures missing in any given week. At the time of printing of the Free Times this week, no Stanthorpe data had been entered on the BOM website since last Wednesday 7 June, other than wind speed and direction which are recorded automatically at a non-manned weather station at the Applethorpe TAFE. The Stanthorpe BOM weather station is located next to the Stanthorpe Visitor Information Centre on Leslie Parade, and up until early December last year temperature and rainfall data had been read and entered manually several times every day by Visitor Information Centre staff and volunteers. But since the Southern Downs Regional Council took over tourism marketing of the region last year from the now-defunct Destination Southern Downs body, paid Visitor Information Centre staff are now a thing of the past and volunteer num-
bers have dwindled at the Warwick Visitor Information Centre as well as the one at Stanthorpe. The BOM website shows readings at the Stanthorpe weather station were consistent up until 11 December last year, which was the last day a paid supervisor was on duty before the role was abolished. No readings were entered between 12 December and 20 February and monthly figures for March, April, May and so far in June are incomplete. Stanthorpe and the wider Granite
Belt takes pride in being the coldest place in Queensland - with a longstanding rivalry with Warwick - and the gap in weather records will interfere with the calculation of accurate long-term averages for both temperature and rainfall. Stanthorpe Chamber of Commerce president John Bylicki said the chamber was aware of the weather data anomaly and had been in discussions with the council over rectifying the issue ongoing. “One of our claims to fame in Stanthorpe is that we’re the coolest town in Queensland, that’s part of
our positioning, so yes, we’re concerned about the issue,” he told the Free Times. “We certainly don’t want to see this become the norm. “We’re aware there are issues with the visitor centres and we’ve been having frank and open dialogue with the council. “At the end of the day, they’re responsible for ensuring the weather readings are taken and entered properly.” Comment is being sought from the council for next week’s edition.

High quality premium meats By Jeremy Sollars They say you shouldn’t shop when you’re hungry, but stepping inside the new Rose City Premium Meats store it’s all but impossible to stop your tastebuds from going into overdrive. Paul Carey and Peter Wright did plenty of homework when they set about planning their new business venture - a slice of foodie heaven which Warwick has clearly been crying out for. Located next to Rose City Jewellers in Rose City Shoppingworld, the store is opposite what will eventually be the entrance to the new Coles supermarket currently under construction - a prime spot in terms of visibility and passing trade. At the risk of making them seem older than their years, the two butchers and owners/managers of Rose City Premium Meats have more than 60 years’ experience in the industry between them. While they know their stuff, Paul and Peter took the time to research and visit high-end butcheries in places like Toowoomba, Brisbane and the Gold Coast ahead of the opening of their new business, which incorporates many features of state-of-the-art operations in today’s competitive retail butchery sector. Not the least of these is what the pair calls the ‘Wow Cabinet’ - a stainless steel and glass display feature filled with tantalising hanging smallgoods made right on the premises in Rose City Premium Meats own in-store smokehouse. But there’s no smoke and mirrors here - what customers are loving, along with the traditional butchery offerings, is around 30 new product lines including such delights as quail and spatchcock, ‘Jim’s Jerky’ Australian Beef Jerky and Bitlong, and even crocodile for the more adventurous of home cooks. Paul Carey told the Free Times they’d been selling “a bit of everything’ since opening Rose City Premium Meats nearly two months back. Familiar to regular customers from their days at the former Carey Brothers Meats in Rose City Shoppingworld, Paul and Peter have carried into their new business the same simple philosophy of selling high-quality meat sourced as much as possible from the Warwick area.
Their display cases are loaded with every cut imaginable of local beef, lamb and pork, together with their popular lines of ready-to-cook meals such as stir-fries and pre-marinated meats. The boys are particularly proud of their housesmoked smallgoods and quality hams and bacon, and old favourites like savoury slices, potato bakes and desserts are still on offer and now sit alongside Rose City Premium Meats’ new lines which are flying off the shelves. You can even grab yourself a load of Dagwood Dogs or Chiko Rolls for a traditional Aussie treat if you’re so inclined. “The feedback from our customers about our new product lines has been really positive, we’ve had a tremendous response,” Paul said. “I think a lot of the interest has come from all the cooking shows on TV these days, people are looking for new things to do in the kitchen. “People really want to know where their meat has been grown, and knowing it’s fresh and was free-range, that the calf was still on the cow before being processed, that’s important to a lot of people these days. “We’ve also taken our displays to a new level, and I think where we are, once the whole centre redevelopment is finished, we’ll be in a very good place and the passing customer trade will be very beneficial for us.” The new store has a nod to local and Carey family history, with historic black and white photos and a branding board featuring in the background, along with a flat-screen running cooking videos to give customers added inspiration for what to do with their goodies. Paul said he and Peter were delighted to come across tiles from the original Carey Brothers Rose City Meats - opened in 1984 with the new centre when Paul was aged just nine - which were unearthed during the renovations recently, with the butchery being the centre’s longest-standing business next to Woolworths. The pair employ around a dozen staff, including butchers and ‘wash-up boys’ and the atmosphere back-of-house is bustling, with knives flashing with expert ease and tasty treats filling the new purpose-built in-store fridge facility alongside the smokehouse.
Around 30 new product lines sit beside old favourites in the new butchery.
Paul and Peter source as much local meat as they can and focus on freshness and quality.

And your best mates are also catered for Rose City Premium Meats sells dog bones and pet mince and treats like smoked pig’s trotters, so no-one in the household needs to miss out. Visit Rose City Premium Meats on Facebook to learn more about one of the Rose City’s innovative new businesses and keep an eye out in the Free Times for other news on the Rose City Shoppingworld redevelopment in the weeks to come.

In brief
Warwick tap water Casey’s tips
He’s listening Southern Downs LNP candidate James Lister will visit the Yangan School of Arts next Friday 23 June to meet and greet local residents and familiarise himself with the local area. The function will be from 2pm and all are welcome.
By Jeremy Sollars The monthly report for April on town water quality across the region was missing from the May meeting agenda of the Southern Downs Regional Council. The monthly report usually appears in the Engineering Services section of the agenda, and shows if national drinking water quality standards have been met in council’s potable supplies in the preceding month, but the May agenda only contained water consumption data for the region for April. The March water quality report showed water tested at the Warwick Water Treatment Plant (WTP) contained a level of E. coli which did not meet the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines (ADWG), registering two units per 100ML, but the council says this has since been rectified and no E. coli is now present in Warwick supplies. The advice comes as the council investigates contamination of the Leyburn town water supply which has been found to contain a low level of what the council has referred to as “pharmaceuticals”, but says the water is safe to drink. Director of Engineering Services Peter See said the reason the April report on the health of Warwick’s town water was missing from the May agenda was “due to consensus (among councillors) that the number of reports generated was high”. He said the April water quality report was presented to councillors in an Information Report, which are understood to be tabled at councillor briefing sessions held behind closed doors ahead of monthly meetings. “In May, the information was split: the Recycled Water Tables and the Potable Water Table went into a Council-
Race fixing case hearing delayed A Warwick man charged with harness race fixing has had his matter mentioned in the Brisbane Magistrates’ Court for a second time. Dayl March, 46, was charged on Thursday 6 April with one count of match fixing after police raided properties across south-east Queensland. March’s matter was first mentioned in the court on Wednesday 10 May and had a further mention in the court last week on Wednesday 7 June. The matter has again been adjourned, this time until Friday 23 June. March has not yet been required to enter a plea. A second man, a 27-year-old from Limestone Ridges, east of Warrill View in the Ipswich area, was charged on Friday 7 April with four counts of match fixing in relation to harness racing, and was due to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates’ Court last month. The licences of both men have been suspended by the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission until their matters are dealt with by the courts. The charges followed an investigation by the Queensland Racing Crime Squad, the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission and the Crime and Corruption Commission.
E. coli was detected in Warwick town water supplies in March but the council says April and May testing was clear. lors Information Report and graphs went into the Monthly report in the May agenda," Mr See said. “E. coli is regularly tested, and it is within Australian Drinking Water Guidelines. “The E. coli reading for March at Warwick WTP was brought to the attention of Queensland Health. An issue was identified in the Yangan supply. “At this time, Southern Downs Re-
gional Council worked on a solution as per Queensland Health’s directions, and the issue was quickly rectified. “No residents were at risk during this time.” The Free Times asked the council for more information on the “issue” with the Yangan supply, but none was received by time of printing this week. Stink over Quart Pot Creek The council remains under investi-
gation by the Queensland Department of Environment and Heritage (EHP) over a number of releases of wastewater into Stanthorpe’s Quart Pot Creek late last year and this year. The council was fined $12,190 by EHP after an effluent spill into Quart Pot Creek in July last year, and EHP has confirmed it is still investigating other similar incidents which have occurred since then.

In brief

The council remains hopeful the Leyburn water issue will be resolved by early July, with the Leyburn Sprints scheduled for mid-August. Council reports show just under 100 megalitres of effluent has been released into the creek in five other incidents in August, September and October last year and March and April this year, largely attributed by the council to heavy rainfall and in one case to damage caused by a contractor excavating in the creek and rupturing a sewer line underwater. An EHP spokesman told the Free Times last month investigations into the August to April spills was ongoing. “The Southern Downs Regional Council has been co-operative with the department in seeking to resolve the issues and achieve compliance,” the spokesman said. “As part of the investigation, EHP has reviewed monitoring data provided by Southern Downs Regional Council.
“EHP has previously inspected the Stanthorpe Waste Water Treatment Plant and nearby receiving waters and will again inspect the plant in the near future. “Part of the ongoing investigation relates to the current techniques used by Southern Downs Regional Council to calculate release volumes.” Leyburn water “safe to drink” The council issued a statement on Wednesday last week advising that “low levels” of “pharmaceuticals” along with artificial sweetener and caffeine - had been detected in the Leyburn town water supply, which comes from an aquifer bore. Mr See has since told the Free Times that a council investigation of the issue could take “a month or so”, but has assured Leyburn locals the contamination is not a threat to health. The council has said it believes the
contamination is the result of an infiltration of the aquifer which supplies the town by either septic or agricultural material. The Free Times understands the contamination is most likely to be septic in nature, with a vast array of substances found in septic wastewater, including residue from illicit drugs along with pharmaceuticals such as antibiotics, mood-stabilising medications and hormones from oral contraceptives, mostly passed in urine and faeces, with some coming from unneeded medication flushed down the toilet. The council last Thursday issued a “question and answer” style information statement on the Leyburn contamination, in addition to the initial statement on Wednesday. It described the test results as “unusual” but reiterated that the level of pharmaceuticals represented no threat to human health.
“Water Treatment Plant Operators collect the samples, Queensland Forensic and Scientific Services Lab analyse the results,” the statement said. “Council has reported the findings to QHealth and the Department of Water and Energy Supply under the conditions of approval of the drinking water quality management plan as we were unsure of the significance of the result from a public health perspective. “DEWS has stated that it is not a reportable incident and council is following the recommendations of QHealth. “QHealth has advised a boil water advisory is not an appropriate response in this instance, and that the levels of pharmaceuticals in the water will not cause harm. “Further testing has been carried out and the raw and treated water is free from E.coli, we also tested for cryptosporidium and giardia, and these were also not detected. “SDRC is liaising regularly with QHealth. “The water is considered safe. “Investigations will continue to try to find the source. If this is not possible, consideration will be given to providing an additional treatment process for the bore water if this is deemed necessary. “Various options will be considered depending on the outcome of investigations. However, as this investigation is the early stages, council has not yet finalised options. “These options may include additional treatment processes or potentially the need for finding an alternative aquifer for supply.” * More at www.sdrc.qld.gov.au
Tenterfield CEO hands in his notice Tenterfield Shire Council chief executive officer Damien Connor resigned from his role yesterday, Mayor Peter Petty confirmed in a statement. Mr Connor has been on a combination of sick and annual leave since early May, with speculation having been rife locally about his future. In his statement Cr Petty said Mr Connor’s contract with council “will cease at close of business on Tuesday 4 July, 2017, with council shortly to consider the recruitment process for Mr Connor’s replacement”. “I wish Damien and his family every success in the future, and sincerely thank him for the tremendous job he has done in the 12 months he has been with the Tenterfield Shire. “Particularly, on behalf of the council I wish to thank Damien for his work in bringing forward a restructure of the organisation which will result in efficiencies and cost savings and provide council and the community with a good footing moving forward.” David Walker has been acting CEO in Mr Connor’s absence.

GrainX dust-up drags on The council alleges GrainX has breached conditions of its approval in relation to dust and noise controls and tree-planting buffer requirements. A council spokesman told the Free Times this week that council’s legal representatives had “interviewed members of
the community” with concerns over the impacts from the operation. It is understood some of the residents have reviewed drafts of their statements given to the council’s lawyers but others are yet to do so.

Letters Bad business Two well-written contributions in the letters column of your Thursday 8 June edition caught my eye, re the Warwick Saleyards. Both correspondents expressed justified concerns, but without any details. I will say outright that the proceedings reek. It plainly is poor business to forego $800,000 per annum when the local shire is drowning in debt. Very likely, the SDRC plan includes a sizable real estate windfall at the expense of the stockmen who have supported these yards for generations, as well as the ratepayers who have funded the infrastructure over the years. Dick Howard, Swan Creek.
Accountable? Re Free Times article “Saleyards Secrecy” (Thursday, 1 June). So much to be said for the so-called more accountable council, which is what they pretended to be, with their public meetings at night in vari-

Casey’s tips ous locations. Meanwhile they are holding secret meetings with the saleyards advisory committee, of which no information has been made publicly available. It’s not just the saleyards advisory committee meetings that are kept secret, as noted (Warwick Daily News, 24 May) the SDRC moved 10 agenda items into private sessions. What is the next step - council meetings entirely concluded in secret to keep the public in the dark? All ratepayers in SDRC area should be concerned about this. As the decisions the council make are all funded by we the ratepayers, and as we are aware the rates have been skyrocketing for a number of years due to the decisions various councils past and present have made. G. McConville, Yangan.
Dictators’ creed Dictatorship seems to be looming well in the Rose City, and quite takes away any belief that ratepayers will ever rate for much other than as milch cows!

The council car park has within it an old-fashioned target. Once upon a time a toilet block was seen as a convenience, but that was when the public was more than a means to provide huge salaries to those whose conveniences come with air-conditioning! Tear it down they say! Who cares for the needs of the public! The unlucky souls north of Stanthorpe have dictatorship providing huge wind farms to blight their lives. Then there is the 80 acres of solar panels outside Warwick to never be recycled in the future, because no-one knows how to do that! Then the really dumb, millions a week eventually chicken hatchery, to bring all of Allora to prayer! Down it will all sail when our prayers are answered, and the Dalrymple rages in a way that even the dictators of the Southern Downs Regional Council cannot control. Who has insured this inevitable disaster? Will they be kind to the council for giving approval for the hatchery on a well-known flood plain? Insurance companies will out-dictate the dictators! Melba Morris, Allora.
Low blow I was so pleased to read that the lowest paid workers were going to get a 3.3 per cent increase, but absolutely stunned that retailers were ‘devastated’. Why? Are your workers not worthy of an increase as they are the ones who are doing the work? So often you come across these folk who, by necessity, have to hold down more than one job to cover their rent, their power, groceries, (can’t afford entertainment) etc., and now their bosses are griping that their employees are to be given a raise. How dare you! If you are not satisfied that they are doing the job required ‘by you’ then perhaps you would be better off doing the job yourself. Having been on the receiving end of a low income many moons ago, I know just how hard it is to cover your rent, your power, your transport (bus, tram, whichever); and in today’s world you have to have a phone. Sometime back I was told that a phone is a luxury – you don’t need it. Phones, as much as I dislike them, are a necessity. Many of these lowest paid workers are young people just out of school, or maybe apprentices; whichever, they deserve to get an increase. Why? They are helping you and your company. They are the window to your company. They are probably the first people the customer sees when they come through your door. Please, don’t begrudge them the increase. T Binskin, Warwick.
Funding boost for aged care
12353968-CB23-17
Federal Maranoa MP David Littleproud this week announced the Southern Downs will receive 73 new aged care places and a Federal capital grant of more than $5.5 million, making it easier for our seniors to stay in the rural communities they love while continuing to receive the care they need. “Under the Federal Government’s 2016-'17 Aged Care Approvals Round (ACAR) not only will 73 new places be created in Warwick, Allora and Killarney but also Killarney will receive a capital grant worth $5.52 million,” Mr Littleproud said. Maranoa MP David “Previously, our se- Littleproud niors were often forced to move - away from family and the community they love - to a larger town or city to receive care but this ACAR funding means these valuable community members can receive the support needed to stay in our region.” Mr Littleproud said the new aged care places were also specifically tailored to support our seniors suffering dementia, those who live in rural and remote areas and those who are disadvantaged. “A total of 40 new residential aged care places will be made available at Warwick’s Regency Park,” Mr Littleproud said. “Eight places will support those living in rural and remote areas, eight will be targeted to assist those who are financially or socially disadvantaged and a further eight places will support those suffering dementia. “Southern Cross Care Allora will receive 25 new residential aged care places. This will include five general places and the other places will be targeted to support those with dementia, those from a rural and remote area or to support those who are disadvantaged. “Killarney’s Leslie Place will receive an additional eight places - including four places to support those living in rural and remote areas and four places targeted to assist those who are financially or socially disadvantaged.” The ACAR is the process that allocates funding for new government aged care places and for capital grants each year.

Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said 48,084 scams were reported to the ATO between July and October last year. “We have already seen a five-fold increase in scams from January to May this year and typically expect further increases during the tax time period,” Ms Anderson said. “Already this year, the ATO has registered over 17,067 scam reports. Of these, 113 Australians handed over $1.5 million to fraudsters with about 2500 providing some form of personal information, including tax file numbers. “One victim lost $900,000 to scammers over the course of several months, even borrowing money from family and friends. “The large number of people lodging their tax returns means scammers are particularly active, so it’s important to keep an eye out for anything that looks suspicious and protect your private information.”

Ms Anderson said Australians were generally good at catching and reporting scams, but some scams were harder to spot than others. “Scammers locate genuine ATO numbers from our website and project these numbers in their caller ID in an attempt to legitimise their call - a form of impersonation known as “spoofing”. While we do make thousands of calls per week to the community, our outbound calls do not project numbers on caller ID. If one appears, it’s most likely a scam. “People should be wary of emails, phone calls and SMS during tax time that claim to be from the ATO, even if it seems legitimate. If you’re ever unsure about whether a call, text message or email is genuine, call us on 1800 008 540. If it’s real, we will connect you with the right area of the ATO.” If you think you or someone you know has fallen victim to a tax related scam, call the ATO on 1800 008 540 to make a report. For more information on how to verify or report a scam, visit ato.gov.au/scams or for updates on the latest scams, visit Scamwatch External Link.

Top tips to avoid tax time traps 1. Be aware of what you share You should only share your personal information with people you trust and organisations with a legitimate need for it. 2. Stay secure Keep your mobile devices and computers secure by changing your passwords regularly, keep your anti-virus, malware, and spyware protection software up-to-date and don’t click on suspicious links. 3. Don’t reply Don’t reply to any SMS or email with your personal or financial information. 4. Recognise a scam If someone asks you for your bank account or personal details, or demands money, refunds or free gifts, be cautious. Also avoid requests in emails or SMS requesting you to click on a link to log onto government or banking digital services. 5. Report scams If you think you or someone you know might have been contacted by a scammer, or have fallen victim to a tax-related scam, contact the ATO on 1800 008 540.
·
winter weather, take the opportunity to give your kitchen cabinets a good cleaning to remove any grease and grime. To make the job easy, spray on a little orange oil cleaner to cut the grease, then wipe the cabinets clean with a wet sponge that’s been microwaved about 40 seconds. Be sure to wear gloves so you don’t burn your hands! The combination of citrus oil and hot water will make short work of grease on cabinets. Stovetop and oven: Citrusbased cleaner also works great for cleaning your stove. Start by removing the burners and pans, then give the stovetop a good cleaning using the same hot sponge method. Be sure to remove and clean the knobs and the surface behind them as well. For stubborn stains, sprinkle a little baking soda and scrub. While you’re at it, be sure to clean your oven
·
with a commercial oven cleaner, following the instructions. For a greener option, sprinkle the bottom of the oven with baking soda, spritz with water, let it sit overnight, then scrub it clean. Rangehood and filter: Allowing grease to build up on rangehoods and over the stove microwave fans can reduce their efficiency and shorten the life of the fan. In addition to clean-
ing the outer and inner surfaces of a rangehood or microwave with a citrus cleaner, it’s important to remove and clean the rangehood grease filter regularly by washing it in the sink in hot, soapy water or running the filter in the dishwasher. If you can access the exhaust fan on the rangehood, turn the circuit breaker off and clean the fan blades as well.

Annuals sound good Casey’s tips
in whom you have confidence, look it up on google, the library or whatever gardening magazines you can access. Local knowledge is very helpful, so consider joining our local horticultural society and ask questions of people who have lived in the area for some time. Don’t only access one source. Research several and, armed with this information, you will be able to make decisions and not be disappointed or out of pocket when our rather harsh climate attacks your choices. Above all ... read labels and ask questions. If you really have your heart set on growing something that might be a challenge in our area, e.g. a jacaranda or native frangipanni, pick a protected spot and use some of the many commercially available frost coverings. You may only have to protect them until they are established. Early and late frosts don’t usually kill shrubs but prolonged cold through winter is what does the damage. Planning is well in hand for the Horticultural Society's Gardening Extravaganza to be held once again during Jumpers and Jazz. A wide range of stallholders will be exhibiting garden-related items in St Mary’s Hall on Wood Street on Wednesday and Thursday 26 and 27 July. A tantalising array of sweet treats and Devonshire teas will be available to enjoy and delicious home-made soups will be available served with crusty bread for a light lunch. For any stallholders who are interested in participating, remember that your attendance forms need to be returned by 20 June to secure your position and help us plan.
Garden Time with Beatrice Hawkins While I am writing this I am listening to the glorious sound of rain on a tin roof! It is a sound I never get tired of hearing and one we have not heard for a while. While it seems as the poet said, “there will be floods for sure, there will without a doubt”, on the coast we could certainly do with some of the rain falling there. The frosts we have had in the last few weeks have put paid to some of the annuals in my own garden. The beans are finished and the vincas from my front garden have been pulled out and composted. The hipeastrums and agapanthus are looking a bit sad, but my federation daisy bushes are absolutely flourishing. I have so far been lucky with the passionfruit vines as both the Panama gold and the Nelly Kelly are surviving at present in relatively protected positions. My Panama gold plant was given to me by a friend from a warm coastal area, and I never envisaged the time when I would see it produce. I don’t believe in pampering plants, so they don’t get covered... they have to take their chances. In a protected area at the side of the house, I still have some tomatoes ripening slowly. The cauliflowers and broccoli are growing apace, the snow peas are bearing heavily and the broad beans getting taller everyday and flowering profusely. While they are not setting beans, they are attracting bees and as they are next to the snow peas, they are certainly
At present, I see punnets of zucchini, squash, tomatoes and beans offered for sale in Warwick and if a novice gardener purchased and planted these right now, they would end up very disappointed and disillusioned after the first frost. In this wonderful country with its diverse range of climates, we have become used to be having a wide range of fruits and vegetables available at all times of the year regardless of whether they are in season in our area and subsequently we forget what is seasonal in our own regions. We want to encourage people to enjoy and succeed at gardening, and this corporate approach to supplying outlets does not help this goal. What grows in Cairns at this time of the year does not survive in the Warwick area unless you have a heated glass house! The answer to this problem is knowledge, and this is usually available from a reliable nursery person or, if you don’t know one of these
playing their part. My new vegie beds are fallow under a blanket of lucerne mulch ready to be planted out in spring. Another bed in a corner of the yard is slowly taking shape and will eventually be the spot for some grevilleas and bottle brush as, hopefully, an attraction for native birds. One of the many attractions of native plants is the frost tolerance of many species. Banksia, grevillea and bottle brush are providing some colour around town at present despite what has been a cold, dry start to the season. Hopefully, the rain I have been listening to is only a forerunner of more to come. For our farmers the old adage still proves true-- “there is more money in mud than dust!” One of the things that upsets me most as I visit assorted garden departments in various areas of the country, is the number of times I see plants that are totally at odds with the climate that they are being sold into.

Legend Nadal bags 10th title The
spin With Casey O’Connor email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com
What an amazing record Raffa Nadal set earlier in the week winning his 10th title at Roland Garros. Surely a record that is unlikely to be broken. I doubt there has ever been a player who has dominated a surface the way Nadal does this clay court, and it is not as though he has had to overcome bunnies on his way to the record. As we have come to expect he dazzled as he raced away with the match and the title leaving many of the legends of the game stunned and in awe. In 2017, Nadal had to do the one thing he has not faced before in the French Open and that is play a previous winner in the final. Stan Wawrinka must be counting himself lucky that Nadal was forced out of the Open in 2016 due to an injury when he won the title. The court and the French Open belong to Nadal but post-game he was the humble winner we have all come to appreciate. Wonder if that brat Kyrios was watching. After once again embarrassing our country during this tournament you have to wonder how many more chances Tennis Australia are going to give him. More than the Aussie public that is for sure. Thankfully there is another Aussie youngster in the wings showing immense promise. Alex Popyrin became the first Australian to win the junior title at Roland Garros. Couple of Aussie greats who have won this title are none other than Rosewall and Newcombe. Hope he can follow in their footsteps on and off the court. Perhaps in the not too distant future, we will be talking more about Popyrin’s talent and less about unacceptable behaviour of Kyrios. In this particular week, the less said about the Australian cricketers and the Saudi footballers the better. - Casey MARYVALE HOLD BOURKE COOPER CUP Conditions were perfect for last Saturday’s annual Cooper XI Maryvale game played at Maryvale. The Maryvale team secured back-to-back wins in the annual match with a good win over the visitors who were without the support of their mentor Lew Cooper. Cooper who recently celebrated his 80th birthday suffered a mild stroke earlier in the month and although he is recovering well has been hobbled by the doctors and given orders of bed rest. His lieutenants did a great job in his absence and although he possibly does not believe it, the game went off without a hitch. The only problem for his side was that they could not take home the trophy. Captain of the visiting XI, and former Queensland player Mark Gaskell said after the game it had been an extremely enjoyable game played in great spirit. He was also impressed with the quality of cricket from the younger players in both sides. It was a case of here a Bourke there a Bourke everywhere a Bourke as fathers, brothers, uncles and cousins made up the bulk of the Maryvale side. However, it was Jason Steketee who got the home side off to a flyer, cracking 40 runs in just 20 balls before he was forced to retire. Steketee found the boundary on four occasions and sent his opponents searching for the ball after some big sixes. Mick Bourke was also seeing the ball well, another forced to retire when he reached the mandatory 40 runs as did Scott McLennan. It was no surprise that Steketee was named Player of the Match for the Maryvale side. Heading the scoring for the Cooper XI was former Queensland under 21 captain and Qld Country player Steve Baker. Baker, who opened the innings with Lee Watts, also hit a quick fire 40 and retired as did his batting partner who again made the trip from Bowen to play in the match. Baker also kept wickets for most of the visitors' innings, and had Neil Vickers stumped off the
David Lyons adds six more runs to the Cooper XI total.
Mark Steketee was named Maryvale player of the Match – he is pictured preparing to despatch another delivery to the boundary.
To the victors the spoils – Pat Bourke accepts the Cooper Bourke Trophy from Neville Taylor of the QCC over-40s representing Lew Cooper and Cooper XI captain Mark Gaskell. bowling of Tom Watts. He was the visitors' Player of the Match. Baker is currently the cricket coach at the Southport School and enlisted a couple of the school’s first XI for the game. The Cooper XI batted first and set the Maryvale side a gettable target of 218 to win from their 45 overs. In a strong batting performance, Maryvale prevailed and won the game by three wickets. Gaskell vowed after the game that the visitors would return next year in the hope of wresting the trophy from the hands of Kevin Bourke and Co. MAROONS BACK ON TRACK Queensland selectors have made some tough but necessary selection decisions for Origin Two after a lack lustre performance in the opening game. Maroon supporters will be looking for a vastly improved performance after dining on Blue humble pie for a couple of weeks. Bit sad to see Sam Thaiday miss out on his 30th appearance for the Maroons, but the prospect of Coen Hess in Maroon is equally as exciting. Hopefully the Maroons are back on track. The bolter from the Storm, Tim Glasby has created his own Storm and his selection has all the hallmarks of a similar shock selection when Ian Healy was named Aussie wicket keeper. Queenslanders will be hoping the Toowoombaborn Rockhampton raised Glasby is as successful. What has surprised some was the announcement that the side will be slumming it at the Crown Casino in the week leading up to the game. Good luck with that Laurie. Of course before we get to the main course, Origin II we have the NRL split round to contend with after more upsets in round 14. The Bunnies kick us off on Friday night and that looked menacing against the Broncos last week. They are sure to start favourites against the Titans who are in total disarray ravaged by injury. Titans coach Neil Henry must be wondering what he has ever done to deserve such bad karma. A rare win in 2017 coming the way of the bunny hutch I think. The Storm and Cowboys go head to head at AAMI Park and although both sides have plenty of players on Origin duty, I think this one might go the way of the Cowboys who possibly have the least disruptions. The Sharks should be too strong for the Tigers at Shark Park on Saturday night. The split round wraps up with another tough game for tipsters
The 2017 successful Maryvale team. when the Eels and Dragons go head to head at ANZ on Sunday. Who saw the Dragons defeat coming last week - not this tipster? I expected a bolder showing from the Doggies but the Dragons were well off the boil as the score line showed. The Eels were simply outclassed by a JT masterclass in Darwin. But I think they will make amends here. Up the mighty maroon next Wednesday night. JUNIOR SHOWS THE WAY Young Stanthorpe golfer Billy Webb has been in good form recently and last weekend scored an impressive nett 63 to win the Stanthorpe Club’s Single Stroke event. Webb went out in 46 on the back nine and came home in 42 for a gross of 88. It was the talented junior’s best ever score for a full round of 18 holes. Darryl Boekholt led the rest with nett 68 claiming the runner-up spot. It was a day for players to produce personal bests - Nikki Waterworth returned nett 69 after a round of 98 - one shot better than her previous best and good enough to take out the Ladies event with Kay Webb collecting the prize for runner-up with a score of nett 73. In addition to the PB performances of the winners, there was another notable ‘best’ during the round. Hayden Smith shot eagle at the par 4 four, eighth hole. Not sure what club he used for his second shot, but it finished in the hole for a two. The day was sponsored by Keith and Helen Jones and Keith presented the trophies. Michael Thompson came close to clearing all pin shots. Only one stayed with him, claiming the third. Matt Waterworth collected 12 and Hayden Smith collected at 17. Nikki Waterworth held the ladies’ pin at 12 and Neta Thouard had best ladies approach at 17. Len Leigh took the pro-pin at 1/10, Darryl Boekholt at 5/14 and Matt Waterworth at 9/18. The Men’s run down went to nett 72 and better and ladies run down to 74 and better. The draw for the Captain’s Match play has been released and has been posted on the notice board at the club. Those players who have nominated should check the board and arrange a time
to play the match within the time designated. The club has scheduled another single stableford event this Saturday which will be sponsored by Tom Fittock and Tric Fittock. Play is also for the Finch Cup and there is a time sheet in the usual place on the board at the clubhouse. CONDITIONS NO DAMPENER Overcast conditions on Sunday did little to dampen the powder or the enthusiasm of the competitors at the SSAA Inglewood range. The Inglewood club held Single Action events at one end of the range and rimfire at the other. Iain Bowen was on song in the Single Action shoot out, scoring Peter Solomon and Tom Donald to win the event. Richard White defeated Monika White and Ross Jackson in the Bowfly Rimfire event. In the Standard 50 metre Rimfire, Monika White reversed the placings to defeat Richard White with Ross Jackson again taking out the minor placing. This Sunday there is another single action event in addition to muzzle loading and centre fire. CLOSE CALLS AT GATEBALL Friday’s gateball games were in the main tightly contested. Eight players split into Red and White Teams for the day’s play. Andrea Denkewitz, Pat Schnoor, John Draper and Effey Russell made up the Red Team and their opponents were the White Team of Margaret Dickenson, Sharyn Roser, Grace Howard and Heather Widderick. Players on each team took turns in playing two balls. It was the Red Team that was most successful winning three of the four games played. The White team were off to a winning start taking out the first game 13-10. Les Williams joined the Red team after game one and the team went on to win the next two games 12-10; 12-8. In the final game, the White team had trouble getting a ball through the first gate the Red team skipped away to an early lead which their opponents could not claw back. The final score 16-7. There was some good accurate shooting by a numbers of players including Pat Schnoor, Sharyn Roser, Les Williams and Andrea Denkewitz.

Local Sport ENTERTAINING GAMES DESPITE LOW NUMBERS It seems that some of the golf croquet players are either escaping the cold conditions or have other commitments recently and numbers have been down slightly. Regular player Val Fancourt is off on an extended overseas trip, and will be missing in action for some time. Two groups played doubles last week, with one player in one group set with two balls. Teresa Pyne and her partner Val Fancourt played the consistent team of Sharyn Roser and Bev Sullivan. Although Payne had the top score of the day (eight hoops) she and her partner were beaten 13-11. Playing with two balls, Judy Lock took on Liz Ellway and Elaine Brown and played very well for a 13 - 9 win. After the break, the group played a social triples game. Sharyn Roser, Elaine Brown and Judy Lock had a 7-5 win. Elaine Brown and Sharyn Roser wrapped up the day's play with a singles game. They called a finish with the score 5-all. GREAT GOFLING WEEKEND: GREAT CAUSE Wallangarra Golf Club wrapped up two big days of golf on Sunday with play in the Annual Two Ball Ambrose event - the Breast Cancer Charity Day. Despite the not so great conditions, a great field turning out for the popular annual event including visiting players from Stanthorpe and a few non - golfers. A great day was had by all and it was all for a great cause. The Gross winners went to the local duo of Jamie Purcell and Kevin Williams with 70 hits. Nett winners were Simon Avery and Steve Hampstead on 62 1/4. Nett runner-up was the team of Tony Murphy and Brad Grogan on 65. Only the one pin shot went off, and that went to Neta Thouard who put all the males to shame on the ninth with a shot Neta and then she sunk the birdie putt. The Accuracy drive for the women was won by the on song Lynette Ludlow while John Green won the men’s. Jamie Purcell won the all-important ‘Best Dressed’ (thanks to his partner Jess) while the raffle winners were Eric McLean and Tom Fittock. Special thanks to the Wallangarra Store and the Wallangarra Football Club for their sponsorship. Wendy Williams put in endless hours preparing an amazing lunch for everyone while Jess Reibelt and Jade Williams helped out during the course of the day and George took on the barbecue duties. Without their help, the day would not be a success and the club and players express their sincere thanks. Club players warmed up for the big Sunday game with a Single Stableford on Saturday. Steve Hampstead scored 39 points to win the round. John Green was next best with 35 points and claimed the runners-up spot. This Saturday is Patron’s Day and a single stableford has been scheduled we will be playing a single stableford (patrons day). Hope to see you all there again BIG DAY FOR COWBOYS At about the midpoint in the TRL competition, Saturday’s local derby between the Warwick Cowboys and Wattles Warriors at Fr Ranger Oval was an important game for both sides who were level pegging on 10 points on the ladder heading into the round. As expected, the game was a thrilling but tough encounter. At the half-time break three tries
Dressed for the occasion at the Inglewood Range last weekend. put the Cowboys ahead 18-6. The game however was far from over and in the second half, the Matt Duggan led Warriors staged a fight back. Two tries in the second half from Ty Gardner and two Duggan conversions had the scores locked up at 18-all. Supporters from both sides in the big crowd were on the edge of their seats before a great individual try from Josh Cruice broke the deadlock with 15 minutes left in the game. The reliable boot of winger Dan Watson clinched the conversion and gave the Cowboys a 24-18 lead. Wattles were not done with and had several chances only to see key passes go to ground. As the clock ticked down towards full time, a Duggan pass to Gardner stuck and he was over to wrap a hat-trick for the game. Duggan had a sideline conversion to again lock up the game, but with seconds on the clock, the conversion was unsuccessful, and from the kick off the Cowboys took the ball dead to clinch an important win. The final score 24-22. Both coaches were pleased with the efforts of their teams. The Cowboys now standalone on in fifth spot on the TRL ladder with 12 points. The win wrapped a big day for the Cowboys Club who hosted Junior games in the morning and a popular ladies day function during the afternoon and evening. Cowboys back rower David Hallman notched up game number 300 and was given the honour of leading the Reserve Grade team on to the paddock. The Reserve Grade made it a memorable occasion for Hallman with a 32-16 win. Hallman himself marked the occasion by scoring a try and showing his versatility by kicking three conversions in the game. The Cowboys club marked Hallman’s milestone with a presentation to the ever reliable player of a framed 2009 Reserve grade premiership winning jersey and montage of photos. In the other game played earlier on Saturday, the under-18s outclassed their opposition 84-nil.
The TRL breaks this weekend for the Madsen Rasmussen round. The only local team playing this weekend is the Cowboys Second Division side who play Gatton Hawks in the President’s Cup. The Warwick Turf Club is set to receive $36,000 while Stanthorpe Jockey Club will receive $15,400 and Clifton Race Club $5400 for welfare equipment and towers. Further afield Goondiwindi is set to receive over $60,000. Racing Minister Grace Grace said the funding would result in upgraded facilities and new infrastructure throughout the region. The Warwick Turf Club has been the beneficiary of additional meetings due to the flood
damage at the Beaudesert race track, and with racing at Eagle Farm headquarters iced until the track issues are resolved, there could be more meetings on the horizon. This weekend Allman Park will host its fourth meeting in five weeks and the course proper is holding up well to the additional racing. The club has received over 100 nominations for the five-race card. The main race the Killarney Cup has drawn a strong field of 13 nominations including several last start winners. Oakey galloper I’m No Ruby was a winner on the track back on 6 June in a Benchmark 58 race and has shown a liking for the Warwick track with two wins here. Toowoomba trainer Jason Judge has nominated Jai’s Luck for the event and followed a recent win in Toowoomba with a third placing to Had Me at Hello at the recent Warwick mid-week meeting. Another Toowoomba galloper with good form coming into the race is Scrap Copper who is a last start winner at Casino. Beaudesert-trained Boomi Dazzler is another winner at his last start in Toowoomba. On paper this already looks like a great race. Officials will be keeping a close eye on weather conditions as the week progresses with a big crowd expected for the meeting. ROOSTERS TOP OF THE TABLE Two BRL games were played last weekend, and it was the Roosters and Cutters who nailed the points. The Tenterfield Tigers have been in winning form, but came up against a pretty hot Inglewood side and were beaten 46-14. Geoff Swan Jnr played in his first senior rugby league game and following in his father’s footsteps had a great game for the Tigers. The youngster took on the line on plenty of occasions and came up with some try saving tackles. Expect to hear more of young Swan in the future. Lock Andrew Gormely also played well in a beaten side. The Roosters have moved to the head of the BRL ladder on the back of the win. At Charlie Andrews Oval, Killarney were too strong for a vastly improved Gremlins side. Killarneys were too experienced for the Gremlins who were the most competitive; they have been all season going down 20-16. In a pleasing sign for supporters, the Gremlins have recruited some additional players and the mood in the club is far more positive. Brett Watts was back for the Cutters and had a big impact on the result. He was named Killarney Players Player. This weekend there are no BRL fixtures with Cutter’s Brett and Jamie Watts Ian Brown and Inglewood players Brent Osborne and Brent Hearne in the South West side which will play in the annual Outback Carnival at Ilfracombe. The South West Country side holds the title and will be looking to retain their unbeaten record. The Cutters Jacob Polzin and Rooster’s Brendan Sauverain have both been selected to play in the South West under-20s side in the Carnival.
