Did dolphin have to die? A dolphin death in Noosa sharks nets last week begs the question to be asked on whether we should be using shark nets, drumlines or nothing. A study comparing shark nets and drumlines that appeared in 2011 in the African Journal of Marine Science showed there were higher catches of tiger sharks using drumlines. It also showed nets caught more marine mammals such as dolphins as well as rays, hammerhead sharks and smaller green turtles. Drumlines caught more loggerhead turtles, the study found, but they could swim to the surface to breathe when hooked on drumlines, increasing their chances of survival as long as the lines were regularly checked. Regular sea goers report seeing turtles and rays being caught in the Noosa nets and seeing tiger sharks in the area. With the need to protect residents and tourists paramount, it’s certainly a topic for the experts to nut out. ● Margaret Maccoll

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT… 'TOO UPSET TO TALK' Wearing the same clothes as the day of the blaze, the owner of an Eerwah Vale home destroyed by fire on Sunday morning was still on Monday “too upset to talk” about the loss. He did say he and his wife and two sons were unharmed, were living with family in Noosa and had been overwhelmed by the kindness of the community. Queensland Fire and Emergency Service fire investigator Ash Dickson said there was so much damage the cause of the fire would be determined through a “process of elimination” ruling out what didn’t cause it. From a firefighting point of view, with all inhabitants safe and all pets accounted for it had been a good outcome, he said. “(The firefighters) did a good job to contain the area and noone was injured,” he said. QFES Cooroy was alerted to the fire on Browns Creek Road by multiple triple zero calls at 10.45am on Sunday. Captain Brad Ensbey said two appliances from Cooroy and one from Nambour arrived to find three quarters of the house engulfed in flames. They called for backup from Pomona and Noosa. “We had 16 urban firefighters and 10 rural,” he said. “Our action was to make sure everyone was safe, protect outbuildings and control the fire.” He said a pool on the property had been emptied and there was a limited amount in the water tanks. The rural vehicles pumped water from the creek to the urban appliances to extinguish the fire in the single storey wooden house. Ash said the fire was not being treated as suspicious, and it would take a couple of weeks to determine the cause. ●
DOLPHIN DEATH A NET LOSS A deceased dolphin was discovered last Wednesday in the shark nets off Noosa’s Main Beach. The sub-adult member of a local pod of bottle nose dolphins was found floating belly up entangled in the nets by a local man out in Laguna Bay. Sea Shepherd’s Apex Harmony Queensland co-ordinator Jonathan Clark questions the Queensland Shark Control Program. “This makes very hollow, the words of Queensland’s shark control manager who often reports that Queensland’s Shark Control Program nets have pingers to protect whales and dolphins. Eleven whales were reported tangled in Gold and Sunshine Coast nets last year and now this dolphin, which says that is completely misleading,” Mr Clark said. “This entanglement has occurred just as the humpback whale migration begins to bring these magnificent creatures close to this very net. These Noosa nets are responsible for the ensnarement of a whale last year,” he said.

POLICE PROBE HIT AND RUN
A tragic end for this bottlenose dolphin at Noosa last week.
Nets deployed at northern NSW beaches after a string of shark attacks were pulled up due to increased sightings of migrating humpbacks in the region. Apex co-ordinator Allyson Jennings said they wanted visitors and locals to see these animals swimming free not “fighting for their life wrapped in a shark net”. Sea Shepherd calls on the Queensland Government once again to remove shark nets during whale migration season. “Queensland tourism derives huge
benefit from marine wildlife including dolphins, whales, turtles and rays that are continuously caught in these nets that provide a mere false sense of security,” Mr Clark said. Whales will pass through the region in large numbers as part of their annual migration from the Antarctic to areas around the Great Barrier Reef, including Hervey Bay all the way to the tip of Cape York. ●
Police are looking for the driver of a vehicle that was involved in a hit and run traffic accident at Noosa Heads early Saturday morning. Preliminary investigations suggest about 2am, a 16-year-old Tewantin boy was struck by what is believed to have been either a white, silver or grey Toyota Prado while he was crossing David Lowe Way between Cooyar Street and Bicentennial Drive. The vehicle failed to stop at the scene and police located vehicle parts nearby. Police said the boy was taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The vehicle police are looking for is missing a Toyota badge from the front. Police would like the driver to come forward to help crash investigators understand the circumstances surrounding the incident. If you have information for police, contact Policelink on 131 444 or provide information using the online form 24 hours a day. ● 201721004-LB21-17

I
Life Member of Noosa Netball, Lola’s lifelong love of the sport began in 1952.
f you look into the background of well-established country sporting clubs, you will always find that there are one or two names that really stand out. Such is the case in Tewantin. When you look closely into the world of ladies’ netball and talk to people, a name that comes to the forefront is that of Lola McDonald. Born in Gympie in 1940, the then Lola Hooper shifted to Tewantin with her family and started her education at the Tewantin State School. It was during this time that at the age of 12 years, she was introduced into the world of basketball. “Ah yes,” she said, “In those days it wasn’t called netball, then it was known as basketball; in fact it wasn’t until the mid-’70s that the name changed to netball.” However this young lady was immediately captivated, embarking on what was to become a lifelong love of the sport. “I started at 12 in 1952 and now in 2017 I am still involved - not as much mind you, but helping where I can. In the beginning our team was known as Tewantin Basketball and we played against teams from Pomona and Cooroy, all school teams - they were great days, lots of fun and we loved it.” In those days education opportunities were somewhat restricted, so Lola was enrolled as a boarder at the State Commercial High School in Brisbane. After some time she returned home to finish her education at Nambour State High; but again because of travel problems she was once more a high school boarder. During her college years her love of basketball never wavered, it just got stronger. “I left high school in ’56 at the age of 16 and got a job working in Brisbane in a branch of the CSIRO. However two years later I returned home and commenced working in the office of the Royal Mail Hotel. I also took a second job working as an usherette at the Mayfield Theatre, which was straight across the road from the Mail. While working at the Mail, Mr Geoff Gall the publican decided to extend by building a beer garden on the side of the hotel. It was then that I met a plumber named Keith McDonald.”

A romance started and then in late ’59 Lola Hooper became Mrs Lola McDonald. They were happy years for the McDonalds, a family of three boys and two girls, strongly united until Keith’s untimely death in 2014. Also the basketball had really started to take off and a representative team known as Tewantin Basketball was formed. “The teams were seven a side and my first rep game was in Ipswich. There was a lot of travel involved and we would all cram into buses or family cars. Down through the years we also travelled to Gympie, playing at Albert Park every Wednesday night and it was freezing cold.” It was during the mid-’70s that the name was officially changed to netball. An official committee had been formed and the game was gaining momentum; then in the 1980s the Noosa Shire Council allocated a large area of land on McKinnon Drive. Until that time the game was being played at several venues such as Reid Park, the leisure centre and the Lutheran College; with some games being played at night. Juniors were catered for with Saturday morning competition. “Our game had really taken hold among the ladies.” A team to represent the district was formed and played in the State League; proudly on several occasions Lola was chosen. With the game spreading throughout the state, much travel was involved with the local rep team going to such places as Brisbane, Gold Coast, Ipswich, Toowoomba, and even as far away as Ingham and Rockhampton. “On one occasion we even teamed up with Coolum Netball Association and charted a plane for our trip to Townsville,” Lola said. Whenever major netball tournaments were held the opening ceremony was a grand march past of all teams. This was also part of the competition. “Because we had formed a team we approached the Noosa Heads Surf Club for a coach and an instructor named Ray O’Connor, affectional known as Ocker, stepped forward. He was the same instructor,” she informed me with a laugh, “who years before had trained a blond kid named Ron Lane for his bronze medallion in the Noosa Club.” Without realising it, this was to be the start of Lola’s involvement with yet another local sporting organisation; the Noosa Nippers. “In the 1960s a group of people were talking about forming this, so my husband and I joined to help. People such as George Salter, Ron Gower, Denise Thatcher, Des Hempsall, Bob Kneale and the Birrell brothers, Bob and Norm just to name a few, were among the starters. At that time they had no name, so because the senior club emblem was the Seahorse they became known as the Seacolts; then when the organisation was consolidated in Queensland, it became known throughout as the Nippers.” Then in 1973 at age 33, Lola retired from competition. However her dedication never faulted, she coached, spent four years as president and on stepping down, spent some 17 years working for the club as a foodie. “It was our job to organise the catering - thus the name foodie; a lot of work but it was fun.” Now her office is that of patron. However for this dedicated lady, netball and the nippers haven’t been her only contribution to the community. She has somehow found time to be also involved in the Lady
“AH YES, … IN THOSE DAYS IT WASN’T CALLED NETBALL, THEN IT WAS KNOWN AS BASKETBALL; IN FACT IT WASN’T UNTIL THE MID-’70S THAT THE NAME CHANGED TO NETBALL.” Lions, and spent some 25 years as secretary of the Rural Fire Brigade. This, plus raising a family of five and helping her husband run a plumbing business, meant that life for Lola McDonald was definitely full-on. When asked about her fondest memories, she rates having her children first. Then in netball having three of their senior girls, Karen Clark, Kiera Tromp and Emma Tickner represent Queensland and play host to the visiting English Under 16 netball team. But above all - watching the club grow to its present state of 40 junior teams and 28 senior sides.
Her one big discontent is the lack of support shown during the early years by the press. “They just didn’t want to know, it was a sport played by girls. But now the success of the Queensland Firebirds is starting to change all this. However there is still a way to go; and we won’t give up. Over the years we have had some really outstanding people, great ladies such as Chris Strid, Fran Sidler, Deb Johns, Silver Covey and Daphney Bickley; ladies who now proudly wear the medal of Life Member. I am sure they will agree with me when I say there are many more.” ●

PROTEST TO KEEP RAIL CROSSING BY MARGARET MACCOLL
12355179-ACM24-17
More than a hundred concerned residents including some on horseback gathered at Joe Bazzo Park at Pomona on Saturday to protest against a proposed closure by Queensland Rail of the town’s pedestrian rail crossing. Protesters said they had learnt QR planned to close the Reserve Street level crossing located on State Government land ahead of a proposed $1 million upgrade of the railway station. Protest organiser Alan Bonsall said the crossing had connected either side of the town which were dissected by the train line for 100 years and provided the safest path from one side to the other. “No one here can recall someone being bumped by a train or being killed by a train at the crossing,” he said. Protesters said any alternative connections involved walking distances too far for some older residents and would mean navigating busy roads in addition to a train line. They said an underpass existed but horses shied away from it and it was not usable by cyclists. The residents were upset there had been no community consultation and they had only discovered QR’s decision to close the crossing by chance. “In a town of 2700 people, 1364 have signed a petition to protest the
closure,” Alan said. Noosa MP Glen Elmes said anyone coming to Pomona could see the railway station should have been replaced years ago, but having used the crossing for 100 years without accident showed its safety. He told residents he would take the petition to parliament and discuss the matter with Noosa Council. Noosa Councillor Frank Wilkie said council’s view had been consistent in support of the community. He said the council supported keeping the crossing open and QR should upgrade it to meet their safety concerns. QR CEO Nick Easy said no decision had been made on the crossing at this stage. “The safety of the Pomona community is our number one priority, and the current pedestrian crossing would require an upgrade to ensure its compliance with national safety standards,” he said. Nick said “a number of consultation activities” including a community drop-in information session would be held from mid-July. “A decision to close the crossing will not be made until the community consultation process has been completed,” he said. “In consultation with Noosa Council
Pomona protesters don't want their level crossing closed. and the Department of Transport and Main Roads, we are investigating possible footpath and road crossing options to ensure pedestrians have a safe passage to the two other nearby formal crossings at Reserve Street and Subway Avenue.” For more information, visit a protesters Facebook page at www. facebook.com/dontdividepomona or contact QR’s Level Crossing Compliance team on 1800 875 099 or email lcc@ qr.com.au. ●

NEWS OPEN WALLETS FOR ART Eleven local arts projects will share in funding to the tune of $40,000 in the latest round of Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) grants. Projects include In a Different Space, a short film and portrait series featuring new work by dancers from Ripe Dance, a Noosa-based seniors dance school run by choreographer, Gail Hewton. This round also supports Ian Richter’s Negative Imagery: Making light of the dark - a Mental Health Week exhibition at the Cooroy Butter Factory that explores mental health issues. “Music and theatre are covered too, with funds to support Anya La Zanya’s all-age instrument making, playing and performing workshops, plus Noosa Arts Theatre’s Queensland premiere of David Williamson’s Jack of Hearts,” RADF Committee Chair, Cr Jess Glasgow said. A recycling art project, printmaking workshops and a mentoring program for young musicians are among the other recipients. ●
MUMS TAKE THE CAKE (AND DON'T EAT IT) A Noosa Council fitness program for mums has been named Program of the Year by Parks and Leisure Australia during its recent state conference. Council’s Community Development Officer Amanda Tie said watching the program develop from a trial program to help mums “get fit” into a large, ongoing program had been the greatest reward for her. “Mums, the community and local businesses all benefit,” she said. “Mums become fitter and more confident during the program. Many then continue on to join fitness programs provided by local businesses, benefitting the businesses, while the

community benefits overall by having fewer isolated and depressed mums.” The Active Mums program targets women with children under five years of age and provides a series of free, core-foundation classes to help reestablish core muscle function after childbirth. After completing the corefoundation classes, Mums can choose from a wide range of low-cost fitness classes for a period of one year. After that period ends, mums can then transfer to full-rate memberships. The Queensland Government provided $10,050 to Noosa Council to deliver Active Mums Noosa to help get women and girls active for life. Noosa Council contributed an additional $5000 to the grant to help

The big winners of the Noosa Council’s latest round of Community Project Grant recipients included $30,000 for Noosa Gymnastics Club, $19,500 for Sunshine Butterflies and $12,300 for Noosa and District Landcare Group. Funding of $130,000 was shared across 23 projects in four categories of programs, events, equipment and infrastructure. “This round of grants will support a wide range of community projects,” Mayor Tony Wellington said. “For example, funds will go towards helping Noosa Coast Guard upgrade its training room, as well as supporting Cooran Amateur Rugby League Football Club’s plans for new spectator seating. “Community Project Grants are always competitive, and although it’s not possible to fund every application in each round, more than half received funding this time." LifeFlight Australia was disappointed its vital lifesaving role on the Sunshine Coast missed out on its request for financial support for fuel for the next 12 months. A spokeswoman said they appreciated previous financial support from Noosa Shire Council and would continue to work with the council and its lifesaving work in the region. “Last year LifeFlight airlifted 16 patients from the Noosa Council region, costing the charity service $200,000 - a service which is free to all patients,” she said. Community groups can contact Council’s Community Development team on (07) 5329 6500 for more information. ●

NEWS WAR ON PLASTIC BAGS A ban on single use plastic bags and a cash for containers scheme has been included in a Waste Reduction and Recycling Bill introduced by the State Government. Noosa MP Glen Elmes said the legislation was very similar to policies announced by the LNP about 12 months ago and was “great news for the environment”. “It is pleasing to see that both major parties agree when it comes to reducing waste and protecting the environment,” he said. “Queenslanders use around one billion plastic bags every year and the
average family collects more than 60 per week. Single-use plastic bags have an average lifespan of just 12 minutes and can take more than 1000 years to fully decompose, causing irreversible damage to both land and waterway environments. “There are plenty of alternatives to the single-use plastic bag - by making a simple lifestyle change, local families can make a huge difference.” Mr Elmes said the LNP also committed to introduce a container deposit scheme. The legislation is still to be assessed by the parliamentary committee and debated in State Parliament.

Noosa MP Glen Elmes gave a condolence speech in State Parliament last week for the Member for Cooroora from 1974-'89, Gordon Simpson, who passed away on 10 May. “I first met Gordon in 1985 when I moved to the Sunshine Coast and was inspired by his dedication to the job and to his constituents, and was impressed with his extraordinary passion for his beliefs. "He was ever present - and I personally took note of his ability and drive to be out and about, and actively involved throughout his electorate,” he said. “The then seat of Cooroora took in most of what is now the seat of Noosa and well before I became the member in 2006 I admired the great things he achieved for my community - including his contribution to the creation of local values and unique culture, that locals still identify with, live by, and treasure today. “His legacies include the removal of sand mining leases at Sunshine Beach, the protection of the Noosa Spit from developers, the expansion of the Noosa National Park and Noosa’s first town plan that placed a ban on high rises. “Gordon was a visionary and a man of the people. He spoke of the importance of tourism, and the need for state and federal governments to support council in their endeavours, and about the importance of protecting national parks and the freedom of community to access their ‘wonderland’. “The people of my electorate and visitors alike have Gordon Simpson to thank for the way Noosa has kept its pristine environmental attributes where other coastal communities have not.”

Pomona celebrated the opening of its only banking service, the Bendigo Bank last week. A ceremony to mark the occasion was attended by more than 80 community representatives including Mayor Tony Wellington, State Member for Noosa Glen Elmes and Bendigo Bank State Community Manager Kate Wakeling. Senior branch manager, Geoff Edwards said the Pomona Community Bank branch offered a full range of banking services - transaction and lending facilities, home loans, personal loans, business lending and credit cards. “There’s also opportunity to book in financial planning and business banking appointments, and having its own
ATM is also a real plus for locals,” he said. “We’re delighted to be able to deliver what the Pomona community asked for and want this purpose-built expansion to grow from strength to strength. “It’s already been a great addition to the town and we want to continue our positive effect in the Noosa hinterland by putting our profits straight back into our community.” Located at 3 Station Street, the branch services Pomona and the hinterland three days a week every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10am-3pm. As the branch continues to grow, so too will its opening hours. For more information, phone the Pomona Community Bank branch on 5485 1786.

Miss Moneypenny’s on Hastings Street has launched their new winter cocktail menu which includes a Martini named ‘Le Jardin De Rose’, which they believe is the most extravagant and premium cocktail ever offered in Noosa. The drink was created by the team to be served alongside a custom piece of jewellery created by Master Jeweller, Gordon Herford of Poeta. The cocktail and the jewellery costs $7000. Miss Moneypenny's owner Ben Walsh said the drink was simply stunning and contained Archie Rose Distillers Strength Gin, Lillet Blanc, a splash of liqueur de lychee, rose extract, and musk tincture, blended with saffron. It is served with two Coffin Bay oysters garnished with soy and ginger dressing and wakame seaweed salad on the side. NEWS REAL-TIME FLOOD DATA
Jeffrey Robinson of Bigfish Tattoo.
BATTLE SCARS DIPPED IN INK Tattooist Jeffrey Robinson of Bigfish Tattoo at Tewantin is honouring his mother by offering free tattoos over mastectomy scars. Jeffrey’s mother Marie-Claire passed away from breast cancer. He saw first-hand the effect of the disease on his mother and the impact on her of having a mastectomy. “She didn’t feel like a woman anymore,” he said. Now Jeffrey wants to help both men and
women who have had mastectomies. “I’ve wanted to put this in place four or five years ago. Now I’m in a position where I could help. There may be people who can’t afford a tattoo. Breast cancer affects both sexes.” Jeffrey said he had the skills, the equipment and the experience of tattooing over mastectomy scars. “For me it’s my time I am giving and I’m more than happy to give time,” he said. Jeffrey hopes other tattoo artists will come on board and eventually there will be a worldwide network of tattooists willing to offer this service. ●
Council has awarded a $200,000 contract to build five new flood warning stations in the Noosa hinterland. The new stations will provide real-time creek height and rainfall data from sites in Cooroy, Lake Macdonald, Pomona and Kin Kin. Disaster management co-ordinator Alan ‘Fox’ Rogers said the new stations would be able to translate the data provided by flood gauges into useful information to help predict when flooding would close roads, and for how long. “Having real-time flood information in a disaster event, particularly at places like Pomona and Kin Kin where we have had no previous information, will be invaluable for both emergency services and local residents who will be able to read the information from the BoM website,” Mr Rogers said. Council’s Local Disaster Management Group selected the sites in consultation with the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) and Main Roads. The stations are solar-powered and built to withstand high winds, heavy rain, floodwater and earthquakes. They use radio signals to transmit creek height and rainfall information. Work will begin in July and they should be operating in about 11 weeks. ●
GREEN WASTE DUMPED The Peregian Beach Community Association (PBCA) has called for the illegal dumping of garden waste such as lawn cuttings in bushland to stop as it is
hampering community efforts to care for coastal and adjacent bushland areas. PBCA secretary Rochelle Gooch said that some householders might be under the misapprehension that garden waste is “green” and will automatically break down with little or no harm to the environment. “Unfortunately this is not the case,” she said. “Garden plants soon become environmental weeds and then outcompete the local native plants for water, light and growth rate, which decreases the diversity of our local habitat and its wildlife.” ●
FERAL ANIMALS Sunshine Coast Council endorsed the continuation of its Feral Animal Prevention and Control Program. The program will target wild dogs, feral pigs, feral cats, feral deer, European foxes and European rabbits and also the Indian myna bird which, although not declared a prohibited or restricted animal, is impacting the area. Council’s team leader animal education and control Anthony Cathcart said the data and research collected through this program allowed council to make decisions based on real results and outcomes that are monitored. “We are able to identify the presence or absence of feral animals and provide education and assistance to residents to minimise the impacts on their property, pets, livestock and agricultural crops." ●

NEWS THEY CAN CHECK YOUR TECH St Andrew's Anglican College team CheckTech Solutions has come out on top in the second annual Mayor’s Telstra Technology Awards which help to promote, foster and grow innovation and entrepreneurship on the Sunshine Coast. The Peregian Springs College students Charles Eldridge, Samuel Rieger and Sam Young came up with the proposal to develop an app to solve tech problems using a crowd-sourced approach by connecting tech gurus and those with tech problems through a fast, lowcost app. The winning students took home a Galaxy TabPro S Pro 4G each, while their school was awarded a Meraki access point with a three-year licence. The competition included more than $20,000 in prizes, with the winners announced at a special ceremony at Spark Bureau in Maroochydore. Winning CheckTech Solutions team member Charles Eldridge said being involved in the Mayor’s Telstra Technology Awards had been a lot of fun, as well as about learning. “We’ve been working on an idea called CheckTech Solutions, where we are trying to connect

St Andrew's College winning tech students. people who have technology experience, like students, with those who need technology help,” Charles said. “At the beginning, I didn’t know what I was going to do after school or what I wanted for the future. “I had specific interests like science and technology but I didn’t know where it fit in, and this experience, particularly the entrepreneurial part of it really helped me to understand what it’s like to be in a technologydriven world. “We had no idea what entrepreneurship was at the beginning and over the course of a couple of weeks we collaborated with mentors and
industry professionals and we really learnt about what it is to be an entrepreneur. “We’re definitely going to continue to grow the business and put it out to the public and see where it goes. “Hopefully it goes well and we’ll be the next Uber for tech support. “We’re really, really happy to have been awarded first place.” Thirty students from six different schools across the Sunshine Coast participated in this year’s awards which were designed to encourage the Sunshine Coast region’s young people to express their technological talents. ●

BEHIND THE GAVEL
GORDON MACDONALD
SOUTHERN BUYERS ARE KEEN ON US AUCTION expert and owner of The Auction Group Gordon Macdonald shares his insights into the busy world of fast-paced auctions throughout the Sunshine Coast. This week, Gordon has seen the gavel secure sales over $1 million right down to $165,000 for acreage in Yandina. Last weekend, we saw the best of polar ends of the market with five properties selling in excess of $1 million and one property selling for $165,000. Yes that’s right $165,000 for a vacant 1.3 hectare site. A number of our properties saw spirited bidding selling well over reserve and there was a clear presence from our southern purchasers. In fact, on one of the properties, five out seven registered bidders were from Perth, Melbourne or Sydney. Interesting, to say the least. Firstly, all of these interstate buyers had no hesitation in making the first bid and continuing to bid up the price strongly. They were obviously very comfortable, both with the auction process and the value of the properties they were bidding on. Secondly, because agents gathered specific buyers together so effectively and in doing so, generated an excellent sales outcome for their sellers. With so many out-of-town buyers hitting south-east Queensland right now, every agent has the perfect opportunity to connect with these customers and every home owner has the same. ●

$1.8B BOOST FOR HOUSING SECTOR THE Queensland housing construction industry is about to receive a $1.8 billion boost after the State Government announced plans to build 5000 extra homes. The funding boost is expected to create thousands of building and construction jobs while providing more Queenslanders with a “safe, secure and affordable” place to call home. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the new 10-year Queensland Housing Strategy would see Queensland take the lead in delivering social and affordable housing in Australia. “Housing is fundamentally about people and our $1.8 billion investment puts people first,” she said. “Secure housing enables young people to finish their education. It provides the stability that keeps families together and it gives people the secure base they need to get and keep a job.
Through the new 10-year Queensland Housing Strategy the government will build 4522 new social homes and 1034 affordable homes, support 450 full-time construction jobs a year, invest $30 million to reform the housing system, plus a range of other measures. Treasurer Curtis Pitt said that on top of the significant investment, the Queensland Housing Strategy heralded a new way of doing business urging small to large-scale businesses to get involved. “Whether you are a small home builder or one of the state’s largest developers there is something in this construction package for you,” he said. The state-wide expression of interest for the first projects is now available on the Queensland Housing Strategy website. Minister for Housing and Public Works Mick de Brenni said the Queensland Housing Strategy
construction program was focused on partnerships and creating local jobs. “This strategy is a big win for local builders and tradies in the residential sector across the state,” Mr de Brenni said. “Because we have refused to privatise housing we are now able to target job opportunities to locally based builders. That means jobs for block layers in Townsville, sparkies in Rockhampton, carpenters in Toowoomba, and subbies and tradies up and down the coast. Mr de Brenni said that the landmark construction process would be complemented by a comprehensive suite of reforms to improve housing outcomes. The new Queensland Housing Strategy and links to the Expression of Interest can be found at qld.gov.au/ housingstrategy ●

PARKING MENTALITY Reading page three of Noosa Today (15 June) about what council says regarding the “fixing of traffic woes” I find it hard to believe and wonder at the mentality. A couple of points that stand out are that even if we have to cut down our shopping or sight-seeing parking time due to cost, what about the length of a meal, movie or show? There are just not adequate spaces and what if visitors want to look around and enjoy anything? Also, who is going to pay if they can go somewhere without cost? As for designated bus lanes etc, how much is it going to cost to widen all the existing roads? Also this idea of park and ride. Where are we going to park and what frequency bus timetable and where to? I really do wonder at the mentality behind the thinking. Would any councillor be prepared to take me on in a bet that with this thinking we will be no better and probably worse off when the next council elections come along? Ian Lawson, Tinbeerwah.
PEARLS OF WISDOM Commercial fisherman Trevor Clarey claims that improving water quality is the main reason community organisations are working to re-establish oyster reefs in the Noosa River (8 June). Not so Trevor. Reversing the destruction by commercial fishermen of Noosa’s once prolific oyster reefs is the driving motivation for the Bring Back The Fish project partners. Improved water quality will be a welcome bonus. In the late 1800s and early 1900s commercial fishermen decimated the Noosa River’s and Weyba Creek’s oyster reefs. The historical record shows that by the early 1900s about one million oysters a year were being commercially dredged and shipped to Moreton Bay for fattening and sale. By the 1920s the reefs had been wiped out. Further, since the 1950s, commercial fishermen have regularly dredged the bottom of the river and middle lakes using beam trawls, further destroying the few remaining oyster reefs and hard bottom structure that juvenile oysters rely on to establish themselves and survive. The Bring Back The Fish Project is re-introducing recycled oyster shell structure into the Noosa River and Lake Weyba to provide juvenile oysters with habitat which they can attach themselves to and survive. Because oyster reefs secrete high quality fish food, by bringing back the oysters, we are confident we can bring back more fish. The oyster reef component of the Bring

WHY THE LONG FACE?
FREE AT LAST
As a keen reader of Noosa Today I noticed your cover item and published letter of today (15 June) “Horses Are Causing a Stink on Noosa North Shore”. As a licensed commercial horse riding operator with Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service for over a decade on Noosa North Shore I write in response to the comments made by the author, Nick Hiusko. Our business, Equathon, has been a successful commercial operator of horse riding in the Cooloola section of the Great Sandy National Park, winning numerous local, regional, state and national tourism awards including Adventure Tourism Operator of the Year at the prestigious Queensland Tourism Awards. It is a fact that horse riding is a recognised ecotourism activity sanctioned by Eco-Tourism Australia and our business holds the highest certification with this organisation. In addition, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service and the Department of National Parks, Sport and Recreation both accept that horse riding is a compatible activity in protected areas subject to responsible management practices. While I accept that Mr Hiusko is entitled to express his views and that not all people are fans of horse riding, it is reasonable to expect that any arguments put forward against horse riding will be based on fact and scientific argument. In this regard I take issue with Mr Hiusko’s comments. Firstly, Nick Hiusko asserts that horses spread seeds and weeds, that they have an adverse impact on flora and that makes inferences that members of organisations such as Noosa North Shore Residents Association, Noosa Parks Association, Noosa Council, and the state and federal governments who have all worked to
Dear Mr John Lobb, For many years now we have put up with your constant whining and complaining about our Noosa Council. I would like to remind you sir that de-amalgamation happened many, many years ago now and 81 per cent of us who actually live in the Noosa Council region wanted to get away from your Sunshine Coast Council. While I am on the subject of 'your’ council region I hope you have devoted as much time to complaining about their uncontrolled destruction of the native vegetation in the very area you hail from, Peregian Springs, the insane war on dog owners for simply tying their dog to a post while they got their morning coffee then getting a fine for abanding their pet, oh and don't forget the home owners at Bells Reach being fined for parking in their own driveway with the rear of the car less than a metre outside their fenceline (not on the road I might add) because 'your’ council approved uncontrolled development with streets no wider than lovely Noosa footpaths. Glass houses, John, glass houses. So please Mr Lobb accept that you didn't get what you wanted all those years ago, put all your toys back in your cot and stay out of our papers! Laurence Duggan, Noosa.

protect the environment of the Noosa North Shore would be opposed to horse riding. I can assure Mr Hiusko that there are many members and representatives of these bodies and other relevant organisations who support responsible conduct and continuation of commercial and private horse riding on Noosa North Shore. In 2009, QPWS commissioned an independent 20-year scientific study into the impacts of horse riding in South-East Queensland. After five years of this study an interim report was released by the four scientists involved which concluded that the environmental impacts of horse riding are minimal compared to erosion and weed dispersal caused by 4WD vehicles, storm damage (floods, water and wind) and birds. The study included observing and monitoring large numbers of horses in endurance riding events (some 300 horses) traversing trails in a 24-hour period. Mr Hiusko also asserts that camel riding was banned from the Noosa North Shore for environmental reasons. This is simply not true. The camel operator previously running camel tours on Noosa North Shore ceased operating because of a failure to abide by local council regulations. We live in a democracy where it's healthy to have the right to express our views. It is a shame however when people want to stop others from enjoying their chosen and approved recreational activity because of a personal ideology and try to persuade public opinion in favour of that ideology by mistruths and false scientific argument. I believe Mr Hiusko is in the minority on this topic. Our horse riding activities regularly rate as the number one or number two most popular outdoor activity of the Top 35 Activities in Noosa on TripAdvisor. We engage with and encounter many residents and visitors in regard to our horse riding on Noosa North Shore and the vast majority support horse riding in this area. We believe Queensland’s, and for that matter Australia’s environmental regulations, in regard to recreation and tourism in protected areas are some of the most environmentally responsible in the world. We believe the weight of scientific evidence coupled with the majority of public opinion will show that horse riding, managed responsibly as it is, on Noosa North Shore is an exciting and valid eco-tourism activity for residents and visitors alike. Alex Watson, Triple Olympian, Queensland Horse Trails Working Group chairman, Noosa Heads.

LETTERS SIGN OF THE TIMES It seems all is not going well with the Discovery Group’s campaign to develop an 'Ecocamp’ along the lines of a mini Club Med at Elanda Point. Their application for the downgrade of a key fish habitat in Lake Cootharaba to allow construction of a jetty to service their proposed extension of large, high-speed boat tours of the tranquil Everglades is currently before Envi-
ronment Minister Steven Miles for evaluation. A recommendation by his Parks and Recreation Department was anticipated by the end of May but it appears that the decision is taking longer than was envisaged. The inside word is that the reason for this delay could perhaps be the sheer volume of reasoned objections from local residents who love the unspoilt nature of this entire area, coupled with the many local interest groups who have
also made significant submissions. After the public disquiet regarding the Palaszczuk Government’s support for the Adani Carmichael project, word is that inner-city Labor Party members with a tight majority are concerned that their seats may be at risk in the forthcoming state election. The Discovery Group has released at a recent tourism convention a lavish brochure entitled Habitat Noosa which pre-empts the minister’s

decision by presenting the Elanda development under their subsidiary EcoCamps Pty Ltd as a fait accompli, an issue which has been brought to the attention of Minister Miles and other ministers. What they may not be aware of is the ongoing campaign of threats, intimidation and now outright theft and vandalism which apparent supporters of the Discovery Group’s development proposal have undertaken in the Boreen Point/Elanda point area. A large number of inoffensive signs expressing concern about the proposal have been illegally removed and destroyed in this area in the past weeks, including many from fences and from private property. Members of Protect Elanda, the group formed to counter the EcoCamp proposal and which has also come up with a constructive alternative future for the Elanda Point National Parks Recreation and Education Area, will be reporting to local police any individual engaged in such activity. As a spokesperson for the Protect Elanda group I’d like to make it clear that we are in no way opposed to positive change, but we are a dedicated group of local residents who believe, as does the Noosa Council under Mayor Tony Wellington, that the Discovery downgrade application if granted would set a dangerous precedent, one which we believe would open the door for future exploitation of National Parks purely for commercial gain, all in the spurious name of 'ecotourism.’ We can only hope that Minister Miles and his colleagues agree with us. Noel Bird, Protect Elanda group spokesman.
SHOEBOXES OF LOVE Tewantin State School students have done their part to brighten the lives of their East Timorese counterparts, with hundreds of educational care packages. The decorated shoeboxes will now make their way to Sao Miguel (St Michael) school, about 30 minutes west of Dili, and include exercise books, rulers, erasers, pens and pencils as well as personal items from each student. The community school has 150 kindergarten and 250 primary school students, and the area also caters for several other schools that are in need of basic educational supplies, but Sao Miguel receives no help from the Ministry of Education in Timor. The project has been going for 10 years and Tewantin State School deputy principal, Rick Cass said his school was delighted to be involved with the program that is shared with Tewantin, Cooroy, Coolum and Pacific Paradise State Schools. It all happens in partnership with the Tewantin Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank and the Rotary Club of Noosa. “It’s been great for all students to get involved and give something back. We’re all actively involved with the project again this year and all our students have had a ball putting the care parcels together. It’s been wonderful to see the results of their hard work, and Bendigo Bank and Rotary will then assist in getting these parcels into the hands of the kids who need them most,” Rick said. The 500 shoeboxes expected from Tewantin will join 1500 others from Cooroy, Tewantin and Pacific Paradise state schools to create a shipment that will change the lives of 2000 East Timorese kids. “Every shoebox will be personally decorated and contains items to further the education of a child less fortunate than themselves. Each student has enclosed something small of theirs such as a soft toy or a tennis ball. It’s added something simple, but personal to each box and it was quite the moment when the kids held up their boxes at assembly,” he added. ● Thursday, 22 June, 2017

The President’s Hat, by Antoine Laurain
Fleet Foxes - Crack up
This delightful translation from the Noosa Library has gentle Gallic humour, playful ideas, and opens a window on Parisian life. Daniel Mercier experiences a thrill when the President of France sits down in an elegant brasserie next to him. When the President leaves, his rakish black felt hat is left behind. Hesitantly, Daniel decides to wear the hat himself. It makes him feel a different man and to make a decision which changes his life. But eventually he also forgets the hat as he leaves his train in a rush. The hat is next picked up by a young woman, and so goes the through a series of adventures which influence peoples’ lives until ... well, you must read the book.
After six years of waiting, Robin Pecknold and band return for the much-anticipated third album. CrackUp continues seamlessly from 2011’s Helplessness Blues with their trademark harmonies and layering techniques that the band turned into their own sub-genre of folk over a decade ago. Lead track Third Of May/Odaigahara’s uplifting melody is not indicative of the rest of the album, which takes its time to sink in, but this is another superb effort from Seattle’s finest purveyors of Gregorian chant. One can’t help shake the feeling that On Another Ocean (January/ June) was somehow influenced by the success of the band’s former drummer, and vice versa and notwithstanding, the record was well worth the wait. ●
The Mummy (M) Starring: Tom Cruise
- By Jenny Carter, Friends of Noosa Library
They’ve revisited The Mummy ... whether we needed it or not. And frankly, all things considered, it’s not a bad new take on the bad old monster. Tom Cruise takes centre stage in the old Brendan Fraser role, as a looter of antiquities masquerading as a long-range reconnaissance sergeant in the US Army. How’s that for a job description? Caught in a sticky situation in Iraq, a fortuitous Hellfire missile strike reveals ... you guessed it ... The Mummy.. Tom deploys his usual sloppy impulse control, frees The Mummy, and it’s on for young and old. ●

WHAT’S ON
A ROWDY NIGHT WITH THE 'CROWN PRINCE OF RUDE' Funnyman Paul ‘Pauly’ Fenech is bringing his new show to the Sunshine Coast - Pauly’s Fat Pizza + Housos Comedy Spectacular at 8pm this Friday 23 June at the Imperial Hotel, Eumundi. He’ll also be scouting for new “talent” for a new TV show concept to roll out in 2018. He’s made five movies, thousands of live comedy shows and over a hundred half hours of TV - and comedic genius Paul Fenech has now developed what he says is his funniest solo show yet. After a sell-out tour of the entire Queensland coast last year, Logie winning Paul Fenech ‘The new Crown Prince of Rude’, returns with a new show that he has described as “a bourbon-fuelled bogan subwoofer bonanza of laughs!” As TV classics, Fat Pizza and Housos truly connected with audiences across the county with those characters and themes still finding a place in Fenech’s latest show. “Housos is, for me, part of a tradition in

Fenech’s alter egos Pauly and Franky Falzoni (plus an assortment of other personalities that reveal themselves live at each show) explore every aspect of our Australian culture, creating the wildest live comedy show touring the country. Funnyman Fenech warns that all stereotypes will be sledged. The last politically incorrect showman Paul ‘Pauly’ Fenech will also be on the hunt for the biggest bogans he can find - for a brand new TV concept he’ll be launching in 2018. All will be revealed during the course of the show at the Imperial Hotel, Eumundi. “There is a strict criteria, but I believe a special kind of bogan will found on the Sunshine Coast,” Fenech says. The River Room will be transformed into a “Pop-Up” Boathouse dining experience due to restaurant kitchen upgrades downstairs for 10 days from 20-30 June. GRANTING THE SNAIL OF APPROVAL BY HOLLIE HARRIS Proud to display their commitment to Slow Food, chef Joshua Smallwood from Ricky's and general manager of Ricky's and Woodfire Grill, David Jouy.
Foodies gathered together on Tuesday for an Australian first to be awarded “Snail of Approval.” Peter Kuruvita’s Noosa Beach House was brimming with many of our region's finest food producers, food artisans, restaurant owners, chefs, restaurants and food outlets who are leading the way in the Slow Food philosophy of good, clean and fair. The Slow Food program (with its snail logo) was launched to inspire food businesses to use ingredients from our local area. Each business which had been given the tick from Slow Food was presented with an award from Mayor Tony Wellington and given a sticker to display at the front of their business to announce that they had the Snail of Approval and encourage consumers to support better food practices. Among the recipients was local chef and the past president of Slow Food Noosa, Matt Golinski who was awarded the first Honorary Snail of Approval, being a champion of local produce and his ongoing commitment to the values of Slow Food. “The Snail of Approval is a great way to know who the true champions are of local food in the region and it’s great to reward the people who are taking the time and effort to use or grow good, clean and fair,” Matt said. “I’ve seen Slow Food grow so much over the last 12 years. It actually means something now and having that sticker on your door means that comes with responsibility of maintaining that integrity. If you say you use local produce, then use local produce, don’t just talk about it,” Matt said. “The people here today are the real thing,” he said. With almost 50 recipients of the award, each business receives global recognition through Slow Food’s membership and the Slow Food Planet app to demonstrate their focus on supporting sustainable produce, ethical
farming practices and local business. Just a few of the recipients who will proudly fly the Slow Food flag are Locale, Ricky’s, Noosa Reds, Piggie in the Middle, Wasabi, Coconut Head, Wtf? Pizza, El Capitano, Cafe Le Monde, Voodoo Bacon, Embassy XO, 32 East, aromas Noosa, Noosa Cleanse and Juno Kombucha and Noosa Boathouse ... the list goes on. Keep an eye out for the
Snail of Approval when dining out or buying your produce and support local, sustainable, ethical food. Applications for round two close on 30 August and are open to farmers, producers, food artisans, chefs, restaurants, market stalls from the Sunshine Coast to the Cooloola Coast. It’s all about open fireplaces and smooth jazz this winter at Wood Fire Grill. Join them for Jazz Wednesdays with live music from the David Bentley Duo. Thursday nights they have a mouthwatering ribs special, and then get ready to warm up and indulge in a traditional winter Christmas feast at their Christmas in July event. This four-course Christmas menu includes snacks, entree, shared traditional roast, pudding dessert, and mulled wine on arrival. Each course will also feature a matching wine. Mark Sunday 9 July in your calendar and be sure to book and check out the menu on www.woodfiregrill.com.au Guests should arrive at 6pm for a 6.30pm start, and the cost is $95 per person.
A unique project at the beginning of its development, Maravista Farm is a source of fresh, organic and locally grown produce for the Ogilvie Group of venues which include aromas noosa, Wood Fire Grill, Locale and Rickys. A stunning 250-hectare farm in the Noosa Hinterland, the property boasts beautiful fertile land, rolling hills, more than 20,000 macadamia trees, honey production and the beginnings of a project that encompasses food provenance from start to finish in the food life-cycle. We followed aromas noosa head chef Jules Santisi on one of his regular visits to Maravista Farm last week, and got to see the winter produce in full bloom. Jules said his regular visits were an important part of the menu planning process, in which he worked directly with head farmer Mark Ormand to plan key ingredients, and also find inspiration in what nature delivers in abundance each season. Mark Ormond is the man leading the project and has been charged with the vegetable and citrus development and production. He started the project for the restaurant group more than one year ago, and in that time has created an impressive kitchen garden, allowing the chefs access to fresh local produce, food in different stages of the growth cycle, as well as hard to access ingredients.
From left: David Jouy (general manager, Rickys and Wood Fire Grill), Mark Ormond (head farmer Maravista Farm) and Jules Santisi (head chef aromas noosa). Maravista Farm vegetable produce is free from chemical inputs such as herbicides, pesticides, fungicides or fertilizers, and the soil was developed using compost made from the vegetable waste and coffee grinds from the Ogilvie Group restaurants - an
ongoing initiative between the venues and property. aromas noosa released their new French inspired winter menu this week which features local produce from Maravista Farm. â—?

FOCUS ON … Health, Wellness & Beauty COAST CLASSES WITH PUNCH Since the launch of Sunshine Coast Council’s Healthy Sunshine Coast in 2016, thousands of participants have reaped the benefits of improved health and wellbeing by attending a range of free or low-cost classes across the Coast. One of the Healthy Sunshine Coast partnerships provides TAFE Queensland East Coast Certificate III and IV in Fitness and Diploma of Sport Development students an opportunity to share their knowledge and passion at boxing fitness classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the TAFE Queensland East Coast Mooloolaba Campus. Community Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said council had received plenty of positive feedback since the launch of the Healthy Sunshine Coast program in 2016. “The partnership between council and TAFE Queensland East Coast has been a win/win for both students and participants,” Cr McKay said. “The TAFE boxing fitness classes have been conducted by students in
their final semester under the supervision of their qualified teacher. “Each week we receive glowing feedback from the participants saying they are loving the classes and are starting to see real results.” One of the participants attending the Healthy Sunshine Coast and TAFE Queensland East Coast boxing fitness classes, Angel Sutton from Maroochydore, was keen to share her own personal success story. Angel Sutton said her TAFE Queensland East Coast studies as an Apprentice Chef had highlighted the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. “Learning about the importance of combining
a healthy diet with exercise has certainly made a difference to my health and wellbeing,” she said. “Encouragement from my family also prompted me to attend the free Healthy Sunshine Coast boxing fitness classes. “I find the TAFE students extremely professional and really look forward to attending each week. “I am really happy with my progress as I have so far lost 13kgs since changing my lifestyle two months ago. “The boxing fitness classes are a great workout and I feel as though I’m a lot more energetic after each session. This is particularly important so I can maintain a work/life balance during my studies,” she said. ●
Melita Inglis with her husband and practice partner, Dave Clarke.
RIPPLE IS RELOCATED BY HOLLIE HARRIS Ripple Psychology recently celebrated its relocation to its new premises in Arcadia Street with an informal launch. Supporters and collaborators of the therapy and consultancy service toasted the venture at the purpose-built clinic. They wished the owner-operators Melita Inglis and Dave Clarke well as they continue to establish a growing client base in the Noosa area. Asked what the point of difference was with regard to the services offered at Ripple, principal psychologist Melita Inglis noted that the service was open seven days a week, and offered early morning and evening appointments. Her husband and practice partner Dave Clarke added that Ripple
continued to boast “no wait time" as clients are guaranteed to secure a booking within one week of contacting the service, although usually a session can be arranged within 24 hours. “Lengthy waiting times for any health service are not favourable," said Dave at the launch, “but long delays for mental health services are especially detrimental ... whether dealing with stress, depression, anxiety or relationship issues - the evidence shows that the sooner people get access to the support they need, the better the outcomes". People are encouraged to speak to their family doctor regarding accessing support from Melita or Dave, or are welcome to contact Melita directly on 0423 242 379 or Dave on 0413 022 542. ●

BY MARGARET MACCOLL What’s up Sunshine? is Noosa Council’s exhibition to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the naming of the Sunshine Coast. The exhibition features photographs and video by leading local and Queensland artists as well as historic images from the Picture Noosa collection and pieces of memorabilia. “Picture Noosa has a significant collection that documents the life of Noosa and the region over the past five decades,” exhibition curator John Waldron said. “These images mixed with the creative works of artist photographers reveal events both good and bad. They show the changing landscape, towns and fashion, and document people celebrating, achieving, getting on with

LIVING WITH GECKOS Asian house geckos - loathe them or love them they are here to stay. This introduced reptile has well and truly established itself on the Sunshine Coast and is causing mixed emotions, by short circuiting our air-conditioner units yet providing free pest control. The guest speaker this week at Noosa Parks Association Friday Environment Forum is Jay Turner from Laguna Pest Control. Jay will talk about the biology of this highly successful invader, their impact on us and our environment and discuss the effectiveness of the myriad of control products and methods on the market. To learn how to make your house less gecko friendly, come along to the NPA Environment Centre, 5 Wallace Drive, Noosaville, on Friday 23 June. The forum starts at 10.30am but everyone is welcome to arrive at 10am when coffee and chat are on offer. Early birds can join Valda and the other bird observers for interpretive birding in Wallace Park. Meet in the carpark at 8.30am. 48 NOOSA TODAY

NOOSA DOLPHINS UNDER 6 The Under 6 Dolphins were greeted at University of the Sunshine Coast by some very relaxed, reclining kangaroos - always a good way to start the morning! The boys demonstrated some quick passing this week, with great teamwork from Henry, Tom and Mac, gaining ground for the Dolphins. Arlo, Jaxon and Lincoln S did a fantastic job in setting up the tries, with try-scoring speedsters Luke and Chayse, just too quick for the opposition to catch. Strong defence from Lewis and Lincoln P helped maintain the great lead for the team. Domino’s Players of the Week: Tom and Lincoln S. UNDER 7 The Under 7s have certainly had some ups and downs this week with their Coach Shane having surgery following a rugby injury and then teammate Sam breaking his nose while warming up on Saturday, but this did not stop this determined team, coaches and parents. They were short on players but the kids just kept going and going, scoring tries and tagging and kicking with all their might. The club farewelled players Rorke and Max and wished them luck for their future rugby. Domino’s Players of the Week: The whole team for awesome commitment.

Under 6 Noosa Dolphin Luke McCready makes a side-step around the opposition. UNDER 8 The Under 8 Noosa Dolphins defeated Grammar 1 - 55 to 15. Another entertaining performance from the Under 8s this week, the boys enjoying the slippery and muddy conditions. Will wasted no time finding the try line and continued to make noticeable impact in defence. The strength of the Grammar side was underestimated at times, resulting in missed opportunities through the loss of ball possession in the ruck. The Dolphins worked hard together to increase their lead with further tries from Jackson, Lachy, Uli, Rory, Myles, Ryder and Josh. With big contributions to the win from Archie V, Xander and Jake as well as solid tackling displays from Harry and player of the week, Kase. ●
OUTSTANDING LITTLE EAGLES NOOSA EAGLES The Under 6 team walked off the field feeling very proud of themselves as they really came together as a team. Learning to talk to each other and pass the ball all the way into the goals. Playing against Buderim Twisters, they had a win 10-1, with every player doing an outstanding job. Well done to goal scorers Isaac, Charlie, Zach and Myles. Great defence on field Max and Eli, who were on the ball the entire time and Phoenix did an outstanding job as goaly. Player of the Match went to Myles, who not only kicked a few goals but made some great passes to his team-mates and kept up the communication. Well done team! Under 9 Black had another intense game against Mooloolaba Eclipsers winning 5-3. Well done to goal scorers Rohnan, Iggy, Noah and Cooper. Great work defending on field James, Alexander, Jaymie, Storm and Baden. Player of the match went to the team's star Baden, who not only was unstoppable on field but did absolutely fantastic as goaly in the first half with some unbelievable stops. A huge thank you to Riley, who’s been with us for the past three seasons. As his lovely family prepare to move, we want you to know, you will always be part of our team! With no substitute players again this week, Under 10 Noosa Black played well to defeat Bli Bli 2-0. Jake MacDonald scored early in the match and got the team off to a good start. A well-positioned throw in from
Under 6 Black player of the match Myles Rollason. Keiran Dow to Alaska Ronzenkranz saw the start of some fantastic teamwork that led to the teams second goal. Alaska coordinated a fantastic pass to Jaimen Slavin, who booted the ball for what can only be described as a cracker goal! Great work, Under 10 Noosa Black. The Noosa Eagles will now take a three week break for the school holidays. ●

NOOSA TODAY 51
LIFE OF BRINE
PHIL JARRATT
Kite festival. Picture: BLISS SWIFT
Kite dudes.
GO FLY A KITE Although the early morning surf sessions here have been marked by overcast skies and perfectly glassy ocean conditions, by mid-morning the wind would blow a dog off a chain. Well, it is Bali’s windy season, and next week is the official opening of the two-month long kite festival season. Our little village, however, had the honour last weekend of hosting one of a handful of preliminary events held around the island to choose the teams to contest the big deals coming up in Kuta, Sanur and Nusa Dua. Truth be told, not being the world’s biggest kite fan, I’d completely forgotten about it until I rode my scooter down to the beach for the dawn check and got stopped about half a kilometre from my destination by the parking cops, who had set up a vast temporary lot on the only big paddock in the 'hood that isn’t a rice paddy. Clearly this was going to be big. I turned around and surfed my other spot instead, but we headed down on foot later in the day to find giant kites dominating the washed out noon sky and the biggest crowd I’ve ever seen at our normally chill beach. Like all beaches on the south-west coast of Bali, at ours Sunday sunset sessions are big, with hundreds of families from the inland villages piling in multiples onto their motorbikes to come down, suck on pink ice
blocks, smoke clove ciggies and generally trash the beach alongside their coastal comrades while watching the golden orb sink beneath the horizon. This was 10 times bigger. There’s a tremendous energy about big gatherings of Balinese, whether it’s a cremation ceremony or a rock concert or a kite festival or a riot. I know of what I speak: in 1985 as a reporter I covered the biggest royal cremation in Balinese history, which happened to coincide with a state visit by US President Ronald Reagan. In both cases, people thronged in near-euphoria, and in both cases the trash they left behind was metres deep. But as I milled around at Pantai Pererenan last Sunday, trying not to be decapitated by the convoys of masked kiters carrying massive fish and leaf shaped aircraft to the starting line, I noticed that trash was scarce, people were hanging onto their plastic. And then I heard the Indonesian and Balinese messages over the PA system, exorting people to say “bye bye plastic bags”, and I saw the hand of Isabel and Melati Wijsen, those remarkable teenagers whose global campaign has in just three years begun to turn around the plastic pollution culture entrenched in Bali for more than 40. Since the girls live in neighbouring Seseh

Trophies.
Beach, it was only natural that they would have an impact on a Pererenan event, but it was beyond impressive. But let’s get back to the kiting. Ever wondered how a kite comp is judged? No, me neither. But I asked the question so you’re going to hear the answer. What started off as a seasonal agricultural festival thanking the gods for abundant crops and harvests, has become a fierce competition between teams from village banjar or council youth groups, with sponsors (including, of course, Gudang Garum cigarettes) providing trophies and cash prizes for the best “new creation” kites, plus best launch and longest flight. The Balinese traditional kites are gigantic and have been getting bigger in recent years, now measuring up to four metres in width and 10 metres in length. Some have impressive flowing ribbon tails reaching 100 metres or more in length. These monsters are built over many weeks in village banjar halls and are transported to events held in place by the teams on the back of trucks, often with a motorbike escort. Who won last weekend? No idea, but everyone sure had fun. By the time the kite crowd had reached frenzy level, we were drinking beers and nicking furniture ideas from our restaurateur mate, Nyoman Bagus, on his terrace above the madness.

Wilko shredding Cloudbreak. Picture: WSL
WILKO BACK IN YELLOW Although I’m a huge fan of the wildchild goofy-foot of the pro tour, Matt Wilkinson - for his attitude as much as for his undoubted ability - I had mixed feelings watching the Outerknown Fiji Pro final in good but inconsistent Cloudbreak. Connor O’Leary, the rookie from nowhere, (well, the Shire, but it’s almost the same) is another Wilko. He’s funny, he knows how to surf a heat and he’s stylish with a few rough edges. What’s not to like? But Wilko deservedly has the yellow jersey going into J-Bay where, when it’s solid, he can do those backhand vert slams as hard and as often as Occy. Great WSL tour so far this year, with half a dozen worthy contenders. Bring it on. ●

PUNCH OF IMPACT REALLY HITS HOME BY RON LANE Last weekend saw another good result for the members of the Cooroy Impact Boxing Academy. Travelling to Bundaberg to contest the Wide Bay Championships with a team of seven fighters, Impact was unlucky when only four could be matched up. Unable to be matched three members, Luke Martin, Abbey Slavin and Page Robinson agreed to take part in exhibition bouts. Coach Mark Evans was more than pleased with three coming home with championship belts; so a total of three out of four and the loss being a split decision. “Young Cohen Robertson boxing in the 34 kg division continued to impress with a unanimous decision win,’’ coach Evans said. In the 51kg elite division, Taylah Robinson, recently returned from her two- week training camp in Colorado, boxed with plenty confidence to take a points win. In the men’s elite 75 kg division, Bryce Hegarty scored a comfortable win but Lachie Proctor dropped a split decision in what was probably the toughest fight of the night-- with both boys taking an eight count in round two. Meanwhile, there's good news from overseas. Impact's 60kg rising star Ella Boot, won the gold medal fighting in the Haringey Box Cup in London. Ella has fought twice in the U.K. winning both bouts. Travelling with the Australian
Futures Team, she will now travel to Budapest, Hungary, and with 18 fights for 18 wins she is starting to fight on International level. Next week will be a big one for Impact's Tyler Blizzard. Tyler will travel to the Gold Coast where he will take part in the Oceanic Tournament. Starting on Monday and going through to Thursday, this will be the final qualifying event for a place on the Australian team to fight in the Elite Men’s World Championship. This event will take place in Hamburg, Germany, in August. We wish him well. For Taylah Robinson, the two weeks spent in the Colorado training camp in the US was a great experience. Also with Taylah was Cartlin Parker formerly of Western Australia but now training under Mark Evans at Impact Gym. “We were training with fighters from England, Finland, USA and Australia; some of the finest boxers from all over the world; the gym was full of Olympians, a real learning experience,” Taylah said. Regarding the training Caitlin noted, “We had three sessions a day. We started with 6k of Interval runs and this was followed by sparring sessions, bag work, shadow boxing and skipping. All done with some of the world’s best.” Caitlin at 21, who has been boxing since she was 16 and with a record of 55 fights, has represented her country countless times. We welcome her to our community. ●

DRAGONS PROUD OF THEIR VOLUNTEERS BEHIND THE SCENES BY LEO WILES EUMUNDI DRAGONS The Dragons Junior Rugby Union team based in Eumundi is indeed fortunate to have a dedicated and passionate group of adults that make up the coaches and managers of the four teams who compete on a weekly basis in the Sunshine Coast Junior Rugby Union competition. This group of volunteers give of their time to ensure all of the players at the club enjoy developing their skills in a safe and caring environment. The teams can be seen training at the Eumundi Showgrounds every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, except during school holidays, from February to late August. Matches are played from March to August on Saturday mornings at venues up and down the Sunshine Coast from Maleny to Caloundra to Noosa and all clubs in between. All the Dragons staff are appropriately accredited and never seem to tire of bringing out the best in all the players in their respective teams. Coaching and managing the Under 7 team is Luke Youd. Bryan Eaton and Alain Samarcq coach the Under 8 team with Dan and Margo Sparks managing the team. The Under 10s are coached by Richard Boully and Dan McGhee with Megan Nurse as team manager. The Eumundi Dragons' club have paid tribute to the great team of volunteer coaches and team managers who make the club what it is today. UNDER 7s This week’s games were hosted by University, with a well prepared grounds offering plenty of pace for the young players. The Under 7s put on a great show with their first game against Maroochydore. It was a well fought game with young Ted running hard, tries to Eli, Charlie and Max. The youngest players Tristan and Zac put in
the hard yards with some fantastic defensive playing. The real excitement was in the second game against Caloundra where the Dragons played their best game all season. It was a try bonanza with countless scoring opportunities. The highlight was definitely an improved and impenetrable defensive line that kept out the opposition and provided great watching for all spectators, young and old. Thanks to the family members for coming along and supporting the team and players. UNDER 10s An early start for the Eumundi Under 10s at Matthew Flinders against University. Some great on ground work by Eumundi late in the first half slowed the University advances causing some errors giving Eumundi plenty of scrums as the ground was a bit wet and pressure from the Eumundi players who kept the hard work up. In the second half - and with some encouragement from the coach - Eumundi kept grinding away and for her efforts Makiah Townsend was named player of the match for her hard work and support play and dogged determination in the middle. Simon Wyspianska received most improved player by showing his commitment all around the field. Although not a win, great team spirit was shown by everyone and thanks to University for their awesome sportsmanship. Go The Dragons! ● noosatoday.com.au

THREE AWARDS ROUND OFF SEASON For the Noosa club, three members being named as recipients of major local awards has put a good finish to the season. Chris Grandemange, Lara Porter and Lilly Tindal were the three named. In the first instance, veteran member Chris Grandemange received the Noosa Electorate Queensland Day Award. Presented by local member Glen Elmes, the award was in recognition of his outstanding volunteer work as a patrolling member of the Noosa Club; in particular his dedication and input to the IRB (Inflatable Rescue Boat) team, both as a driver and instructor for their training teams. Apart from his normal beach patrol obligations, Chris is also on the IRB 24-hour call out Emergency Squad. This is the second time that Chris has received a major award in the last two years. For Chris the first came at the end of the 2015/’16 season, when Noosa awarded him the coveted Lobban Cup as the most outstanding lifesaver of the year. It is interesting to note that his son Keaton, who works as a lifeguard at Main Beach, is also a member of the Emergency Squad and as such has teamed up with his father on several occasions for midnight call outs, with father Chris as driver and Keaton part of the crew. The other two members to be acknowledged are Lara Porter and Lilly Tindal, who were awarded the Queensland Community Foundation, 2017 Maroochy Achievers Award. Lara, a 14-year-old student, who joined the Noosa Nippers as an under-7 in 2008, was recognised for her outstanding work during the season. Lara, who holds the Surf Rescue Certificate, has completed 49 hours on the beach, and has also worked as a volunteer assistant age manager for the under-10 nipper age group. Then, add to this the fact that during the four-week Seahorse Nipper season, which involves every Saturday morning, she works one-on-one with the children with special needs, taking them through a range of activities to provide fun and stimulating learning experiences. For Lilly, a 15-year-old student, she started her career in Noosa in 2009 as an under-10 nipper. Also a holder of the

Ross Fisher, Chris Grandemange and Roger Aspinal (NHSLSC Club captain) with the Award Chris received for the 2017 Noosa Queensland Day Award. Surf Rescue Certificate, she has completed 36 hours this season and also does similar work for the Seahorse Nippers. Along with Lara, she is also an assistant age manager with the under-10 nippers. To top things off, these busy young ladies this season, as a part of the Surf Rescue Champion Life Saving Team, won a gold medal at the Australian Titles in the under-15 First Aid Competition section. They also won medals in similar events at the Sunshine Coast Branch Championships. At
HOOK, LINE & SINKER
the recent Sponsors Breakfast for the Noosa Club, Lilly and Lara were called on to demonstrate resuscitation techniques on the new AED Manikin. The 80 plus in attendance were impressed by the maturity of the girls. When 15-year-old Lilly Tindal won the gold medal at the recent Australian Titles, little did she realise that she had written her name into a unique part of the history of the Noosa club. Way back in 1988, her mother, then Michelle Jaques, also won a gold medal at Aussie Titles when her cadet R&R team won this blue ribbon event. For a mother and daughter to win gold medals at the Aussies, some 29 years apart, is not only great it is something that the club should definitely acknowledge. Over the hill at the Sunshine Beach Surf Club members are reminded that their annual general meeting and election of officers will be held on Sunday, and club captain Scott Summers is requesting that all members attend; a good AGM can be the start of a great season. ●
NOOSA WEATHER FORECAST MANGROVE JACK
THURSDAY Mostly sunny
GREAT PREDATORY FISH IN THE NOOSA RIVER There are still some great reports of flathead in the Noosa River, good fish have been coming from both Lake Cooroibah and Lake Cootharaba and the area in between. Fish the run-out tide with soft plastics and deep diving lures worked close to the bottom. There have also been reports of goodsized jew coming from the deeper areas of the Tewantin Ski Run. Winter time is the time for big bream and as the water continues to cool, larger fish will head into the river to breed. There are plenty of reports of good whiting around at the moment. If you are into bait fishing, fish live or cured worms, yabbies or peeled prawns around places like the Frying Pan or the sand flats next to the Dog Beach. If using lures takes your fancy, fishing the shallow sand flats with surface lures can be very effective and yield some great results. The river has also given up some of the great predatory fish like trevally, tailor and queenies, these fish are more active in the low light periods but can also be taken through the day in the deeper sections of the river. Fishing areas like Woods Bay, Munna Point, and the deeper sections of the Ski Run should yield results. Windy weather hampered the offshore noosatoday.com.au
Craig Mullet with a nice tailor from the southern beaches. brigade last week, but with the weather set to improve things should be looking up. Winter time is also a great time of the year to chase snapper on the closer-in reefs. Sunshine Reef, Jew Shoal, Little Halls and Big Halls will all be fishing well. To improve your catch, try fishing your chosen spot at first light with a constant berley trail floating out the back. There are still some great long tail tuna about. These tuna can grow to 20kg-plus and are a great fight on mid-sized spin tackle. One of the pick of the destinations for chasing these tuna is around Laguna Bay as well as following the coastline up the Noosa North Shore. As we see an improvement in the weather, a trip to the banks should be on the cards, big snapper, pearl perch, jew sweetlip and big cobia should be on offer, remember that the whales are starting their migration so take
Max. 22°C
your time and keep your eyes peeled. On the beaches, there’s been some promising reports from Double Island Point and Fraser Island with plenty of “chopper” sized tailor getting caught on both chrome lures and gang hook rigged pilchards. Slide baiting is an effective way to fish the beaches as it gets your bait out further than possible with conventional beach tackle as it allows you to fish large whole baits that are too heavy to cast. Whiting, dart and bream have been in good number in most gutters along Noosa’s eastern beaches along with flathead and school jew. Fresh bait is always best so fresh mullet, live worms pippies and yabbies will certainly help your cause. In the fresh water, schooled bass will be hanging around the dam walls as they try to make their way to the brackish water trying to spawn. These fish are often tightly packed in a big school and respond well to things like tail spinners and vibe lures worked through them. There is still the odd Saratoga being caught in the sheltered bays, smaller diving lures seem to be the most productive. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! ●
