He discussed the case with a friend wearing a recording device on 9 June last year. Ms Hassan said that on 15 June he attended an appointment at Cranbourne Police Station and told police he was at home asleep in bed when Ms Featherston was murdered. Police placed him in a holding cell with an undercover police operative, Billy. “He told Billy he murdered her as a pre-emptive strike because she was crazy and had a reputation of carrying out the threats,” Ms Hassan said. Police then executed a search warrant at BainSingh’s Clyde North address, seized weapons and drug paraphernalia. They confronted him and he admitted to the crime. Ms Hassan said: “This remains a largely unexplained and motiveless crime, beyond the issue of

substance abuse.” Ms Keddeche told the court that Bain-Singh was 21 at the time and “it seems that he’d reached a point in his life where it all became too much”. She said his family unit was “dysfunctional in the sense that he had siblings that were present from different fathers and also step siblings and there was some abuse by his stepfather”. “What was definitely lacking in his childhood was his father figure,” she said. Ms Keddeche said Bain-Singh “attended several secondary schools because of bullying” and that the “relationship with his mother has never been a good one”. He was hospitalised at age 15 with depression and self-harming. Continued page 3

recognised him from ringing the police back in November 2013”. “And there were words exchanged by Ms Featherston to him that she was going to get him,” she said. In April 2015, Bain-Singh started frequenting the Garden of Eden brothel in Dandenong South. The court heard that he broke down one night and told prostitutes Hunter and Ivy about the murder, though Ms Hassan argued that his tearful account contained several lies. Hunter called Crime Stoppers the next day. The court heard that in April last year, BainSingh admitted the crime to a housemate, explaining that “he had liked her and had a thing for her, but that she didn’t want anything to do with him”.

Doveton woman Rani Featherston was stabbed in the back. She was chased and she was stabbed again. On Monday 19 June the Supreme Court of Victoria heard that Christian Bain-Singh stabbed the 34-year-old with a hunting knife 21 times during the fatal attack in Lace Street, Doveton, about 2.30am on 2 April 2014. She was about 500 metres from her home in Oleander Street. Passers-by found her body about 7am. Prosecutor Anne Hassan said Bain-Singh described hearing “bubbling noises” coming from Ms Featherston before stabbing her one last time, dragging her onto a nature strip and leaving her under a tree. She said CCTV footage revealed that BainSingh was still at the scene when he posted on his Facebook page: “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog.” Justice Christopher Beale will sentence the 23-year-old, who was living in Clyde North when he was arrested a year ago, on Friday 28 July. Bain-Singh has no prior convictions and pleaded guilty to murdering Ms Featherston as well as aggravated burglary and intentionally causing serious injury in relation to a separate attack on Daniel Maynard in his Doveton home 11 days earlier. The court heard that Bain-Singh lost his job as a butcher at Jeff ’s Meats in Doveton in March 2014. His fiance, Ms Dunlop, ended their relationship and he was struggling to pay his rent. Ms Hassan said Bain-Singh constantly handled knives, even while reading a book, used illicit drugs and drank to excess. The court heard that Ms Featherson “was often drunk or always drunk and verbally abusing people in the street” and had an “acrimonious interaction” with Bain-Singh on 2 November 2013. She was running her hand along Bain-Singh’s front fence in Oleander Street, Doveton, and making his dog bark. When confronted she threatened to jump the fence and kick the dog. Bain-Singh called police and said Ms Featherston was “carrying on like a bloody lunatic and was probably drug and alcohol affected”. His legal representative, Nadia Keddeche, told the court that Ms Featherston referenced this interaction when she encountered Bain-Singh on the night of her death. Ms Keddech said her client felt threatened by Ms Featherston “because she had mentioned and

Brutal killing destroyed family’s heart and soul

In Brief Outstanding warrants Doveton man Owen Acquaro (pictured) is wanted on three outstanding warrants in relation to family violence. Police are appealing for public help to find the 38-year-old from, last known to be living in the Doveton area, along with addresses in Boronia and Hallam. He is described as 175 centimetres tall with a medium build, green eyes and black hair. Investigators have released an image of Acquaro in the hope someone might have information on his current whereabouts.

By Casey Neill Doveton woman Rani Featherston loved and was loved. Cousin Reagan Radford said the 34-year-old was beautiful, kind, a comedian and full of life. Christian Bain-Singh pleaded guilty to murdering her in Lace Street, Doveton, on 2 April 2014. On Monday 19 June the Supreme Court of Victoria heard through victim impact statements that the physical and emotional toll the crime had taken on Rani’s family, from depression and anxiety to intense fear and insomnia. Rani lived in Oleander Street, Doveton, with her father Kevin. She’d cooked him dinner just hours before her stabbing death about 500 metres from her home. She attended Doveton Primary School and Doveton Technical College, left school at 15 to work in retail, and at one point married a Romanian man and lived in his home country for about six months. Kevin said that when he divorced from her mother, Rani took over caring for the family. Rani’s mother, Christine, died a year after her murder “of a broken heart”. Bain-Singh was not arrested until 2016.

I haven’t been able to “grieve. I waited for years for someone to be caught

“I haven’t been able to grieve. I waited for years for someone to be caught,” her older brother Matthew told the court. Younger brother Aaron said Rani was like a mother to him and “was the one person I could depend on”. He said his whole life was in Doveton but that it was now the place where Rani’s life was taken. “Because of this I cut myself off from the world I knew, from the world I had trusted,” he said. When Bain-Singh was arrested Aaron “felt great, but then I felt deceived”. “He had been living so close that whole time,” he said. “Every day I think about what he did to her that night. “I think about how she tried to run but collapsed. “I think about how she would have feared for her life as she was laying there all alone in the dark.” Rani’s niece Olivia was 11 when her aunt died and didn’t leave the house for months “because I was so scared that something like this would happen to me”. The court heard that she started struggling at school and fell in with “the wrong crowd”. “I will never be able to forgive you for not only taking my auntie’s soul away, but slowly taking mine too,” she said to Bain-Singh. Justice Christopher Beale will sentence BainSingh on Friday 28 July.

Rani Featherston.

A young Rani Featherston with her brother.

Court hears of Rani’s last moments From page 1 “Mr Bain Singh showed and expressed what appeared to be significant and genuine remorse,” she said. “He appears to have been struggling with his actions from the time of the crime up until his arrest with suicidal behaviour and confessions to a prostitute he was visiting. “He is a young man and if he is supported and

gets the treatment required, his prospects are enhanced.” Ms Keddeche said that shortly prior to his arrest he reached out to a church leader and had “found his faith again”. “Mr Bain Singh still continues whilst he’s in custody to practise his faith,” she said. “He advises that he’s done one Change on the Inside program which is run by the chaplain.”

Hand slashed open in bedroom raid By Casey Neill A blow to the left side of his head woke Daniel Maynard in the early hours of 22 March 2014. On Monday 19 June, prosecutor Anne Hassan told the Supreme Court of Victoria that he saw a silhouette by his bed. He raised his arms in defence and tried to get up, but received more blows and collapsed to the floor. The court heard that Christian Bain-Singh, 23, pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary and intentionally causing serious injury over the incident. Ms Hassan said Mr Maynard’s partner woke to him shouting “someone’s hitting me, someone’s hitting me”, turned on her bedside lamp, saw him covered in blood and called triple zero. She described his left hand as “having been slit down the middle and gaping open”. Police found a 12-inch knife on Mr Maynard’s pillow. Justice Christopher Beale will sentence BainSingh on Friday 28 July over this incident and the murder of Doveton woman Rani Featherston 11 days later. He heard that Bain-Singh lived with Brodie Clifford in Oleander Street, Doveton, and that Mr Clifford had previously lived in Chestnut Road, Doveton, with Mr Maynard. Ms Hassan said that Bain-Singh knew through Mr Clifford that Mr Maynard was dealing marijuana and kept substantial sums of cash.

Mr Maynard was treated at The Alfred hospital for a fractured to the left side of his skull, blood on the brain, cuts to his scalp, left knee, left ear, right forearm and right hand finger, and partial amputation of his left hand. He told the court that he woke almost nightly with his body shaking and sweating. “There’s anxiety that envelopes my body, both mind and soul,” he said. “Having to sleep with a light on in another room provides me with a little bit of sanctuary. “After 14 weeks in hospital and two subsequent surgeries it has left me with about 10 per cent use of my left hand and about 50 per cent use of my right.

Someone’s hitting me, “someone’s hitting me ”

“Fishing, my obsession for 40 years, is over. It’s just damn too hard.” Ms Hassan said that Bain-Singh admitted to the crime during a police interview about Ms Featherston’s murder. “He told police he broke in looking for money,” she said. “He said when he could not find the money that was supposed to be there.” She said that the aggravated burglary was motivated and could be understood but “the extremely violent attack on Mr Maynard remains unexplained”.

Police arrested a Noble Park teen and a man from Hallam over assaults and thefts in Frankston. Investigators were told that a man was sitting at Frankston railway station with a woman about 5.45pm on Saturday 17 June when a teen allegedly struck him. The teen and his friend ran from the scene, police allege, and were involved in the theft of a mobile phone and further assaults near Young Street. The pair then fled the area. Police arrived a short time later and arrested a 17-year-old boy from Noble Park and a 20-year-old man from Hallam. They interviewed both in relation to the incidents. The teen was charged and bailed to appear at a children’s court at a later date on assault and theft charges. The Hallam man was expected to be charged on summons for similar offences.

Cafe hold-up crime spree A Dandenong South cafe was among five targets in a string of south-east armed robberies. Detectives from the Frankston Embona Taskforce are investigating the incidents which started with the Abbotts Road hold-up on Saturday 10 June. A man parked a silver Nissan Navara ute with false number plates ZVA 874 at the cafe’s rear just after 11am and entered armed with a knife and hammer. He demanded cash and cigarettes and was given both before he left the premises. The Navara was last seen travelling east towards the South Gippsland Highway. The bandit was wearing a black mask and a hooded jumper. Incidents followed in Braeside on Wednesday 14 June, where the culprit was described as 168 centimetres tall with a thin build, in Carrum Downs on Sunday 18 June, Frankston on Monday 19 June and Baxter on Tuesday 20 June. No one was injured during any of the incidents. Investigators released CCTV from the Frankston incident and an image of the vehicle from the Carrum Downs incident, which they believe was used each time. Call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au with any information.

Mayor’s smart city plan By Garry Howe Inspired by a recent visit to China, mayor Sam Aziz is committed to making the City of Casey one of the world’s smartest cities within 20 years. Cr Aziz told guests at his annual Business Leaders Dinner at Cranbourne Turf Club on Thursday 15 June that Casey was well placed to be home to Australia’s version of Silicon Valley in the United States or China’s impressive National Science Park. He said Marshall Baillieu’s Minter Farm property in Berwick was ideal for this purpose, having been earmarked as a technological park. The mayor insisted the China trip in April with council colleague Wayne Smith and two members of Casey’s management staff - was already bringing tangible benefits to the region. He said a letter of intent was signed to form an economic partnership with Dujiangyan City, which goes against the regular convention of having several visits before that step is taken. “This is not all aspirational,” he said. “We are almost in daily contact with China and have committed money to making this relationship happen. “This is about opening up the City of Casey to one of the world’s most dynamic economies.” Dujiangyan City has a population of 652,000 people and has a lot of similarities to Casey, Cr Aziz said. Its mayor will tour Casey in a reciprocal visit later this month. Cr Aziz said China was creating a city the size of Brisbane every six months and was a world leader in technology and innovation. He described its National Science Park - where the Chinese Government pays 10,000 scientists each day to undertake research and development in a whole range of areas - as “as one of the most remarkable places I have seen on earth”. “It is their version of Silicon Valley in the US,” Cr Aziz explained. “They are aiming to improve the lives of people through technology, tapping in to every aspect of human endeavour where innovation can occur. “We want to bring this kind of development

In Brief Local jobs needed Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said a vibrant business community was the key to turning around the concerning commuter lifestyle that many in the city had to endure. He said 70 per cent of people currently left the region to work and he wanted to reverse that trend to cut that figure to 30 per cent and have 70 per cent of the population working locally. Business creation and innovation was the key to achieving that, he said. “Businesses are the engine room of the local economy,” Cr Aziz told guest at his annual Business Leaders Dinner on Thursday 15 June at Cranbourne Turf Club. “Governments don’t create jobs, their role is to create the environment in which businesses can flourish," he said.

Bigger than Tasmania

Casey Mayor Sam Aziz says Casey could become the country’s Silicon Valley. to the heart of Casey. “Some of the jobs that exist now won’t exist 20 years from now and some of the jobs that will exist in 20 years’ time we don’t know about now.” Cr Aziz said Casey was committed to becoming a “smart city” within one or two decades - one that has traffic control without traffic lights, using driverless vehicle technology, and where rubbish bins self-regulate the waste. “It was remarkable to travel around Dujiangyan City and not experience the traffic congestion I do on Clyde Road each day,” he said. “Despite the high population, there is very limited traffic congestion in China.” Cr Aziz said Casey had already taken steps towards this aim, having digitalised 14 council services. He said the previously archaic process of issuing disabled parking permits was a great example of this.

“These people have a disability, yet the hoops we made them jump through to get a permit was incredible.” He explained that they could now make an application online and have it ratified by their GP. “Now they can do this with one conversation with their GP.” All Casey staff now have mobile devices to access council records on the spot, eliminating so much wasted time sifting through paperwork. Cr Aziz said he was heading back to China in October and encouraged Casey business people to join him on that trip. “I would love to fill a plane with Casey business people,” he said. “We will be happy to open the doors for you.” Adding to the Chinese flavour of the dinner, Casey’s Ambassador to China and world acclaimed opera singer Shu-Cheen Yu sang Amazing Grace.

Casey is on track to overtake Tasmania in terms of population. Mayor Sam Aziz told guests that the Casey population currently stood at 311,000 residents, making it the largest city in the state. He said, with nearly 10,000 new residents coming in each year, that the population would explode to half a million people within two decades. “That means we will be bigger in population than the whole of Tasmania.”

Business interest-free loans Casey will allocate $100,000 a year in interestfree loans to try to stimulate innovation in the local business community. Mayor Sam Aziz announced the Business Innovation Fund initiative at his annual Business Leaders Dinner on Thursday 15 June. Cr Aziz said five businesses would be granted interest-free loans of $20,000 under the scheme, which would roll out each year. “That means that over 10 years the City of Casey will inject $1 million into the business community to foster innovation,” he said. Applications open on 24 July.

A Hallam man will spend an extra three years in jail over the Dandenong Anzac Day terror plot following an appeal. In June last year Sevdet Besim pleaded guilty to acts in preparation for, or planning, a terrorist act. Justice Michael Croucher sentenced him to 10 years’ imprisonment with a non-parole period of seven years and six months. But the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions said the sentence was too lenient and asked the Court of Appeal to increase it. Judges Marilyn Warren, Mark Weinberg and Stephen Kaye on Friday 23 June increased Besim’s sentence to 14 years’ imprisonment with a nonparole period of 10 years and six months. According to a case summary from the court, Besim had planned to drive his car into a police officer performing duties at Anzac Day commemorations in 2015 and immediately thereafter behead him to advance ‘violent jihad’.

In his sentencing Justice Croucher noted the “terrifying and evil” nature of the planned attack. But he added that Besim’s moral culpability was less than that of two others charged over the plot who planned to attack an army base in Sydney, and therefore warranted a lesser sentence. He also concluded that there was a ‘reasonable possibility’ that Besim might not have gone through with the attack. However appeal Chief Justice Warren and her colleagues said an offender’s culpability was not just to be measured by how close they came to committing an act “but also by appreciating the nature and extent of the act contemplated”. The judges said mitigation should have been limited given the seriousness of Besim’s plan, and that general deterrence and community protection “must be given substantial, if not primary, weight”. “As this was a case of grave criminality, factors such as rehabilitation and others of a personal nature, including youth, should be given substantially less weight than might be the case in other forms of offending,” they said.

It’s none of our business but… The Dandenong-based Southern Migrant and Refugee Centre (SMRC) has a new look. Long-time CEO Jenny Semple is no longer at the helm. Chairman Brian Oates said the non-profit agency had become stale and was going through a “cultural change”. “Staff are realising the place needed changing, needed modernising,” he said. “It needed a new culture. People are embracing that.” “People are going to feel the benefits of positive change into the future.” Dandenong student Iffat Abbsar couldn’t speak more highly of the positive impact of her friends, family and teachers on her life. She told the Journal that without their encouragement, she wouldn’t have taken a leap outside her comfort zone and performed in the Dandenong Slam poetry event on 17 June. “It’s really important to nurture the people around us because I never would have done this sort of thing and I never would have been opened up to new experiences were it not for the relentless encouragement I’ve experienced in my life,” she said. “It’s actually very rare, I’ve noticed. We as a culture don’t really know how to love and much as we know how to hate.” Drivers can put in their two cents about the proposed Westall Road extension. VicRoads is asking for feedback on linking the road to the Monash Freeway from the Princes Highway. It could improve traffic flow between the two main roads and freight access to commercial areas including Dandenong South. The proposed extension is also expected to divert traffic and freight vehicles from

28 June 1917 Rescue at sea During the homeward voyage of an Australian ship, while the vessel was steaming over a shark-infested sea near Sierra Leone at 15 knots, an Australian soldier named Hyland fell overboard. A comrade named Mills immediately jumped overboard after him while a third soldier named Tuckfield, picking up a lifebuoy, also went overboard. Mills, who is a powerful swimmer, reached Hyland and kept him afloat until Tuckfield came up with the lifebuoy. Meanwhile, the ship was stopped and a boat lowered and the three men were picked up. Only 16 minutes elapsed from the time Hyland fell overboard until he and his rescuers were again on board.

23 June 1997 Strictly entertainment Shades of West Side Story came to pulsating colourful life on the streets of Dandenong when dancers from the McPherson Dance Studio in Robinson Street went through their lively “Strictly Cabaret” routine as a prelude to their forthcoming appearance in a 30-minute show in Doveton Public Hall. The show will be held next Saturday at 7.30pm and will also feature modern new vogue and Latin American styles of ballroom dancing. As well as their West Side dresses, the 13 cast members of Strictly Cabaret have traditional ballroom gowns in their wardrobes.

Savour flavour of shredded roti By Casey Neill Kothu roti from PiqNiq Hut is building a loyal following. The Sri Lankan stall moved into Dandenong Market about two years ago and introduced diners to the shredded roti dish. Nirosh Munasinghe explained that kothu originated in the eastern part of Sri Lanka. “I think it’s spread all over the world now, including India and Malaysia,” he said. “They call it different names. They’ve created their own flavours.” The PiqNiq Hut version features vegetables, egg and roti bread. “We even have wholemeal or the wheat flour bread,” he said. “We have gluten free ... and there’s another thing that we use called string hoppers. It’s like rice noodle. “It’s made out of rice flour and steamed in a

EAT LOCAL, DINE GLOBAL round shape. We can use that or we give another option with rice. “Basically, it’s done with roti, but we created these type of things so more people could enjoy them.” The base is mixed with one of four variations of meat curry on a barbecue hot plate while diners wait. “The chicken curry, we have three different variations,” Nirosh said. The standard chicken curry has a medium heat. The devilled chicken is spicy.

“We chop it with a blunt metal tool. That folds the flavour into the roti. “Apart from all the meat curries, we make a mixed vegetable curry that has five or six vegetables in it. “We buy the vegetables from the Dandenong Market itself.” The dish is served with a swirl of yogurt and mint on top, to help those who might have overreached on the heat. “The yogurt always neutralises the spiciness,” he said. When PiqNiq Hut arrived at the market, people hadn’t encountered the dish. “Now I can see, people come asking for kothu roti. They even know the name,” he said. Nirosh partnered with Vijay about four years ago to serve up Sri Lankan cuisine at festivals. The Dandenong Market stall evolved from there.

“It is descended from Chinese menus. We’ve modified it for the Sri Lankan palate,” he said. Then there’s butter chicken, which doesn’t have any chilli. “That is not a Sri Lankan one, but it’s a modified butter chicken for the Australian palate,” Nirosh said. “It was modified by my business partner Vijay (Sivaraj) from the Queen Victoria Market. “He had been running a restaurant called Drums Cafe for the past 21 years. “He got the Lord Mayor’s award this year. “He’s the one who created this butter chicken. “People love it. Sometimes, even Indians love it!” The goat curry, though, is the most popular. The roti is chopped on the hot plate before being stirred through the curry. “It’s the original way of doing it, the authentic way of doing it,” Nirosh said.

Kids bring disused school back to life By Casey Neill

ENT GOVERNM FUNDING * AVAILABLE

The disused Doveton North Primary School site is now home to a thriving new school. Ilim College opened its doors in Rowan Drive in January this year, with 36 students. It’s already grown to about 44 and is adding roughly one new student each week. Their backgrounds range from Turkish to Afghani, Lebanese, Indonesian, Bosnian, Albanian, Sri Lankan and Somalian and they travel from as far as Springvale and Officer. Principal Suleyman Kor said the Islamic school would accommodate about 1200 students when all buildings were completed, but that could be in 10 years’ time. There’s room for about 100 students at the moment, in portable classrooms. Mr Kor hopes the first new building will be finished by the end of the year. The school caters to primary school aged-children but Mr Kor is looking to apply for licensing to expand into secondary. He said the school would grow by one year level at a time.

Mr Kor said the Turkish community started Ilim College in 1995 and the school has 2000 students in the northern suburbs, plus more in Sydney and Adelaide. The Journal News reported in 2014 that Ilim bought the 20,420 square metre site for $4.2 million. Mr Kor said developing the abandoned site was a good thing for the community. “The area does need schools,” he said. He’s heard anecdotally that house prices have been going up since the school opened. Ilim has connected with other local schools in the area, including Holy Family Catholic School. “We’re looking at holding interschool sports with them,” he said. Holy Family will use Ilim’s hall once it’s up and running. “And they’ve got tennis courts,” he said. Mr Kor said Ilim was looking to host seminars. “Some of the migrant families are very isolated,” he said. “Isolation definitely is killing people in this country. “Becoming a community link is definitely our main aim.”

SPORT Stunning hat-trick leaves City at the the summit By Nick Creely NPL 2 EAST REVIEW - ROUND 20 There is no stronger endorsement for the ALeague bid of the Dandenong and Casey areas than the sensational football being played by both Dandenong City and Dandenong Thunder. In what is one of the richest soccer regions in Australia, the quality of talent in the area further highlights belief that an A-League side on their door step is only a matter of time. It was another massive weekend for the Dandy powerhouses, with City defeating Springvale White Eagles 3-1 in clinical fashion on Saturday afternoon. It took until just the third minute for star striker James Kelly to send a ball crashing into the back of the net, in a deja vu moment to last week’s victory in which Kelly scored in just the fifth minute. The goal set the tone for a series of attacking opportunities, with the Eagles holding up solidly defensively. But the dam wall once again broke in the 40th minute when Kelly once again scored, bringing the score to 2-0. The Eagles would have been counting their lucky stars it was half time, because as soon as play resumed, they found some renewed vigor and looked likely. But in the 74th minute, Kelly snared his third via a penalty to extend the lead to 3-0 and close the door of any comeback mission for the Eagles. With the game well and truly over, the Eagles scored a consolation prize, scoring in the 83rd minute from a penalty. Meanwhile, down at George Andrews Reserve, Thunder produced a stunning comeback, coming from the clouds to defeat Box Hill United on Saturday night. The second placed Thunder were going in as heavy favourites after a brilliant run of form in the last month. But in the 73rd minute, the Thunder found themselves down 0-2 and staring down the barrel of a rare off night. A sudden five minute blitz with goals to Simon Colosimo, Brandon Barnes and Adam Centofani saw the Thunder surge into an unlikely 3-2 lead after never looking likely, before a trademark Veton Korcari header in the 86th minute gave the Thunder a fourth goal in the space of 15 minutes, and a remarkable 4-2 lead. As a result of another immense weekend for the Dandenong clubs, City sit atop the NPL 2 East ladder and are favourites for promotion, while Thunder sit second and breathe down the neck of their rivals. Springvale White Eagles are sitting in sixth position as their up and down season continued.

Dandenong City simply can’t be stopped at the moment. 164362

Bulls charge to down the dogs By Nick Creely JOURNAL FOOTBALL REVIEW EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIV 1 - ROUND 10 Wasteful and underwhelming - spectacular and fierce - Saturday’s two-point win for Noble Park 10.18(78) contained all four elements. Up against fourth placed South Croydon 11.10(76) at Pat Wright Oval, the Bulls quickly saw themselves 14-points down at quarter time after kicking a woeful 0.6. Another inefficient second term saw the Bulls kick 3.12 at half time, and fall 22-points down against a Doggies side looking to cement itself within the top four. But an inspiring second half, led from the likes of Kyle Martin - returning from suspension - Tim Kelly and goal kicking machine Tim Harper (five goals), saw the Bulls storm away in dominant fashion with a seven goal to three last half. Rowville 10.6(66) , meanwhile, fell to Norwood 14.10(94) by 28-points at Mullum Reserve. SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIV 2 - ROUND 11 Keysborough’s renaissance into premiership favoritism continues to gain traction with another dominant 54-point win over Heatherton, 17.7(109) to 8.7(55). The Borough’s - off the back of key lynchpins Chris Bryan (five goals), the classy Ryan Goodes and Cory Hargreaves (four goals) - put the visitors to the sword. Bryan, who actually started the season slowly - kicking four goals in his first three games - has now kicked 29 in his last six. DIV 3 Hallam 18.14(122) has turned in one of the performances of the season, knocking off the previously undefeated Ashwood 6.1(37) to pinch top spot. The top two sides did battle in front of a healthy crowd, with no team able to get the running in a slow first quarter, with only the Magpies able to score a goal. But the Hawks sprung to life, and with Shane Thomas (five goals) and superstar Rob Mackay (three goals) firing, piled on the pain in the last three quarters. In other games, Doveton Eagles 23.15(153) belted Moorabbin 4.8(32), Black Rock 32.23(215) smashed Dandenong 3.11(29), Lyndale 12.8(80) overpowered Lyndhurst 5.4(34), Endeavour Hills 20.22(142) expectedly defeated Sandown and South Yarra 20.18(138) did what they needed to do against Carrum Patterson Lakes 6.7(43).

Members approve ‘one club’ bid Dandenong Women’s Cricket Club (DWCC) and Dandenong Cricket Club (DCC) have announced that they will officially merge as of 1 July, after Special Resolutions were voted through unanimously by members of both clubs on 19 June at the club’s AGM. A proposed merger was first brought forward in mid-May, with the representatives from both clubs working diligently over the last month to come up with a proposal that satisfied all parties. The merged entity will keep the name Dandenong Cricket Club (DCC) and will maintain the panther mascot. However, a new logo is planned to integrate some aspect of the DWCC brand and representatives from both clubs have been buoyed by the overwhelming support of members in working with a ‘one club’ approach. “It has been fantastic to see how everyone involved has worked together and shown a real respect for both the history of both clubs and the vision we are working toward for the future,” the DWCC’s Kelly Applebee said. Applebee will take up the position of Vice President for the new DCC and will be joined by both Emma Gallagher and parent Shahid Malik from DWCC on the new committee. Current Dandenong Cricket Club president Michael Findlay will remain as president down at Shepley Oval. “It has been a very positive process,” Findlay said. “The commitment that has been shown from all involved to not only make this merge happen, but ensure it is as successful as possible, means that we are already tracking well in our preparations for 2017/18 and have an exciting future beyond.” Recruitment of coaches for the women’s teams is underway and DCC hopes to announce these shortly, Findlay confirmed. DWCC and DCC recognize the ongoing support from Cricket Victoria and the City of Greater

The two Dandenong powerhouses have merged in a landmark move for south-east cricket. 163545 Dandenong that allowed this merger to go ahead and that will be instrumental in its continued success. The Panthers also announced that current skipper Tom Donnell, consistent all-rounder James Nanopoulos and bustling quick Brent Fairbanks have been awarded life membership at the club.

Nanopoulos in particular had an outstanding 2016/17 season, scoring 341 runs at 34.1 and taking 30 wickets at 21.9 while Donnell captained the club to the semi-finals. All three have enjoyed outstanding yet unfinished careers that have spanned over a decade, and will both be crucial to the Panthers’ quest to go one better in 2017/18.

Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS The move - which is set to enhance cricket in the south-east region - has been on the agenda for several years with the club now looking to continue its emergence as one of the powerhouses in the Victorian Premier Cricket competition. Pre-season for the Panthers will begin shortly, with player signings to be announced in the coming months.

FREE 25 POINT SERVICE

MAJOR SERVICE & TUNE-UP New headlamps include a forked frame around the main lamp that flows seamlessly into a single line extending in a matching chrome trim element towards the central Toyota emblem. The ZR rolls on 16-inch alloy wheels with silver finish, while the catamaran styling is repeated at the rear with a new bumper design that harmonises with the lines of the tailgate and extends to side reflectors separated by a lower bumper garnish. A rear spoiler and automatic levelling head lamps top and tail the Yaris upgrades. The cabin has also been freshened with gloss black ornamentation replacing the silver highlights on the steering wheel, audio unit surround and around the gear-knob base. Toyota Yaris SX variants, in addition to the bigger engine, are equipped with rear and rear

side privacy glass, and a premium steering wheel and gear-lever, while premium features fitted to the ZR include automatic climate control air-conditioning, satellite navigation, plus Toyota Link internet connectivity. The 1.5-litre engine fitted to the SX and ZR delivers maximum power of 80kW at 6000rpm and top torque of 141Nm at 4400 revs and is mated with a four-speed automatic transmission. It is now rated at Euro 5 for emissions. Every model in the Australian Toyota Yaris range has seven airbags, a reversing camera, vehicle stability and traction control, anti-skid brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist, and an emergency brake signal that flashes the hazard lights. The premium safety system, standard on ZR, consists of a pre-collision system, lane departure alert and auto beam headlights.

Safety and style, it appears Toyota is covering all bases with its revised light passenger vehicle, the Yaris hatchback. It has class-leading safety systems available across the range and is clothed in an interesting shape from the Toyota ED2 design studio in the south of France. The result is premium safety that’s standard on the top-of-the-range Yaris ZR we drove, and a $650 option on the Ascent and mid-range SX variants. Yaris hatches are well equipped, featuring cruise control, a display audio system with controls on the steering wheel spokes, a multi-information display, air-conditioning, electric power steering, power windows and mirrors and a 12volt accessory socket. Despite styling improvements, the starting price stays at $15,290, plus on road costs, for the Ascent and an unchanged $17,330 for the SX, with the option of automatic transmission remaining at $1530. The new auto-only ZR price of $22,470 reflects the addition of the safety equipment. The French connection placed a greater emphasis on horizontal lines to express a wide, more planted stance and low centre of gravity. This was done with a new front bumper mimicking a catamaran with broad sections flowing down from new headlights, flanking the wide, trapezoidal grille. The new grille contributes to the Yaris's more steadfast appearance with stepped horizontal bars delivering a 3-D effect. Fog lamps on the ZR are packed in a more compact recess with a vertical line that follows the outer edge of the bumper and features a bright chrome trim detail.
