SES rules, OK? By Wendy Williamson
After passing the vehicle, drivers should not increase speed again until reaching a safe distance from the scene, so that emergency workers can do their job without fear of being hit by passing traffic. It is because of the number of emergency workers killed or injured on Victorian roads after being struck by passing vehicles or debris that the State Government is introducing the new road rule. In a recent survey almost one in five emergency services workers said they’d had four or more “near misses” while stopped on the roadside over the past three years. “I’ve seen plenty myself,” Mr Owen said. “We are out in the worst of the weather, when it is foggy, wet, windy

Local emergency services workers are eagerly anticipating the introduction of a new Victorian road rule aimed at keeping them safe. From 1 July, drivers must slow to 40km/h when passing a stationary or slow-moving emergency vehicle responding to an emergency with flashing lights or a siren sounding. The new rule applies to police, ambulance, SES, CFA and MFB vehicles with flashing lights or a siren. It also applies to VicRoads Transport Safety Service vehicles with magenta flashing lights. Drivers who flout the new road rule face a $277 fine or a court penalty of as much as $793.
First Lieutenant of Mt Evelyn, Luke Roy said there was definitely a need for it and urged people to visit VicRoads if they had any questions regarding details surrounding the new road rule. “There’s definitely merit for it,” Luke said. “It’s happened before - I’ve been sitting in the driver seat of a truck and had a vehicle go flying past us and I’ve had to blast the air horn, so that a number of volunteers attending an incident could dive out of the way.” “It’s just to slow down the public in order to look after our welfare and those we’re trying to respond to.” “Fantastic!” was the reaction of Emerald SES Unit Controller Ben Owen. “We have a lot of near-misses. Some drivers just don’t slow down, despite the signs we put up,” Mr Owen said.
and/or dark, and it can be hard for drivers to see us.” He added that he would like to see some signage on the back of emergency vehicles reminding drivers of the need to slow down. Healesville SES Controller Geoff Stott said that most drivers were courteous, but hopefully the new rule would encourage even the small percentage of aggressive drivers who refuse to follow SES directions to slow down. “We can be dealing with a tree down across the road around a bend or two. Using chainsaws and with earmuffs on it can be hard to hear the traffic. Knowing the drivers have to slow down when they see the flashing lights will give us peace of mind,” he said.
SEPTIC TANK
The changes are the result of extensive consultation with Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria, Metropolitan Fire Brigade, the Country Fire Authority, WorkSafe, Emergency Management Victoria, Department of Justice and Regulation, the Transport Accident Commission and RACV. Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan explained: “Emergency services workers are telling us that they feel in danger while they’re doing their job - we’ve listened to them and made these changes to protect the people who are out there protecting the community. “Most people already do the right thing and slow down when we see flashing lights ahead, but this new rule will make sure that everyone passes at a safe speed.”

Irate over icon change By Peter Douglas A hills-based historical group is preparing to fight plans to relocate the much-loved Olinda Hall. As set out in the recently passed Olinda Golf Course Precinct Plan, included in the developments are the relocation of the hall into the golf precinct area. According to the Mount Dandenong and District Historical Society, the plans indicate the current Olinda Hall site would be converted to a garden and signage area. However, group secretary Wendy Britt said the relocation made little sense. “The hall has been there for 104 years, and I’m not sure if it could take the move,” she said.
“I believe they want to re-locate so they can put up new signage, but I can’t see how that alone can justify the cost. “This hall was built by the community and has a rich history ... this move just makes no sense.” Ms Britt feels there were so many major items in the Precinct Plan that the relocation has been largely overlooked. Though, she said the hall had significant historical significance. In a letter penned to Yarra Ranges chief executive officer, Glenn Patterson, Mayor Noel Cliff and councillors, the historical society outlined much of its concerns. Among those are the proposed addition of a cafe, toilets and changerooms to either side of the hall, which the so-
ciety believes will ‘severely compromise its historical integrity’. The letter reads: ‘Surely, a new purpose-built facility in the golf precinct area would be a better proposal and more cost effective. At no stage over the history of the Olinda Hall has the appropriateness of its location been called into question, so what are the compelling reasons to have it relocated now?’ Ms Britt said the recent construction of a wire fence inside the golf precinct had created fear the relocation would happen swiftly. “I’m so worried that one day I’ll look across and they’ll have pulled the hall down overnight,” she said. Only weeks ago, the Hills Common Alliance took umbrage with Parks Vic-
toria over the wire fence. The group’s members labelled the fence an ‘eyesore’ and ‘inappropriate’. The fence divides the old course grounds with the neighbouring National Rhododendron Gardens. Alliance member Jenny Oxer called the construction a “crisis”. “It looks like a land grab, which pays no attention to the lie of the land,” she said. Meanwhile, Parks Victoria Regional director, Bryan Welch, reiterated the fence was part of the Olinda Precinct Plan. Yarra Ranges Council Director of Environment and Engineering, Mark Varmalis, said the inquiry had been forwarded to Parks Victoria. “A project for the Olinda Golf
Committee to cast eyes over CFA Bill By Derek Schlennstedt The State Labor Government’s controversial CFA Bill that would see Victoria’s fire services split in two, has stalled in the Upper House after the Legislative Council voted in support of the Liberal Nationals' motion to refer the bill to a committee for review. On 20 June, the State Government gave in to pressure from a selected few cross benchers who demanded more consultation be undertaken regarding the State Government's bill. The bill would split the CFA into a volunteer-only organisation and send career firefighters into the MFB to create Fire Services Victoria and would also see firefighters receive cancer compensation. Liberal Coalition MP Brad Battin said it offered an opportunity for Labor MPs to raise concerns over the bill. “This is an opportunity for Labor MPs like Danielle Green, Mary-Anne Thomas, Sharon Knight, Maree Edwards, Geoff Howard and Josh Bull to stand up for their communities and to tell this Melbourne-centric premier that splitting up the CFA is not acceptable.”
“Daniel Andrews has tried to ram this bill through without any consultation because he knows this legislation will tear apart the CFA and put the lives and property of Victorians at risk,” said Mr Battin in a statement. The bill, created to restructure the agencies, was sent to a committee on 22 June, and will not be voted on until after the review is handed down on 8 August. This committee is made up of eight MPs, three government MPs, three opposition MPs, a Greens MP, and a crossbench MP. A government spokesperson from Mr Merlino’s office stated they were looking forward to return the bill to parliament. “This is a strong bill and we look forward to it returning to the parliament.” “Our priority is the safety of all Victorians and ensuring our fire services can meet the fast growing needs of the state." “It is common practice for bills before the parliament to be sent to a committee for further consideration," the spokesperson stated.
Brad Battin has called for Labor MPs to stand up for their communities and tell the State Government that splitting up the Picture: VICTORIA CFA is unacceptable. 168639 STONE-MEADOWS
Briefly Tandem trail theft probed Monbulk police are investigating the theft of a tandem trail from Princi Motors Pty Ltd in Silvan between 12.20am and 2am on Monday, 26 June. Leading Senior Constable Sandra Maddern said two male offenders wearing hoodies broke into the service station by cutting the locks to a gate. She said the trailer was fitted with a winch. A dark coloured Commodore was parked on the footpath at the time of the robbery, and police are keen to hear from anyone who saw the car or has any other information. Honeyeaters and Governor make sweet mix By Derek Schlennstedt At Yellingbo Nature Conservation Reserve the sounds of helmeted honeyeaters echo through the eucalypts, and in among the bush Macclesfield Primary School along with friends of the helmeted honeyeater have come together to welcome an honoured guest. On Thursday 22 June, Governor of Victoria, Linda Dessau and husband Anthony Howard QC, visited Yellingbo Reserve and were treated to a warm welcome by primary school students, community groups and the helmeted honeyeaters themselves. Bob Anderson, president of the Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeaters welcomed Mrs Dessau but it was the Macclesfield Primary School students who really stole the show. The Grade 5 and 6 students from Macclesfield performed a moving rendition of the original song ‘saving the helmeted honeyeater,’ which Mrs Dessau found heart-warming. Although a parent produced the music it was the students who came up with the lyrics which delivered a poignant message to protect our ‘little neighbours’ and that ‘when we work together we can save a species or two’. “It’s particularly heart-warming to see you kids create and perform that song and have that sense of community in helping build this space,” Mrs Dessau said. Mrs Dessau and Mr Howard, with the help of students Eva and Hudson helped to plant a commemorative tree in a re-vegetation area - which offers
Course Precinct has been developed by Parks Victoria, with the Victorian Government allocating $4.47 million to fund the project’s first stage,“ he said. “Council recognises the Olinda Hall offers a significant place for the community as a public place, and is highly valued by those who use it. This was evident in the consultation process conducted by Parks Victoria and Council. “The Mount Dandenong and District Historical Society’s submission regarding the project has been forwarded to Parks Victoria for review.“ Mr Varmalis encouraged all Olinda residents to view the documents on Parks Victoria’s website and contact Parks Victoria in Olinda for more information on 8427 2090.
Tourists were lucky to escape with minor injuries when a minibus they were travelling in crashed into a lamp post on Burwood Highway at Upwey on Friday, 23 June. Leading Senior Constable Dick Kamoen of Belgrave police said the 23-seater bus was heading towards Belgrave when it ran off the road, snapping the lamp post on impact. Meanwhile, Monbulk police are wanting to talk to a male they believe may be able to help them in relation to an incident at Woolworths Supermarket in Monbulk on 13 June. Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Any witnesses are asked to contact 9739 2303.
Trolley load of unpaid groceries Leading Senior Constable Sandra Maddern of Monbulk police would like to speak to a male caught on CCTV at Woolworths Supermarket in Monbulk in relation to a shopping trolley full of groceries that allegedly were not paid for. A photo of the man, taken at 7pm on 13 June, can be viewed on www. facebook.com/eyewatchyarraranges. Phone Monbulk police on 9756 6255, contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report to www.crimestoppersvic.com.au Her Excellency the Honourable Linda Dessau AM, and Anthony Howard QC were treated to a very warm Picture: DEREK SCHLENNSTEDT welcome at Yellingbo Nature Conservation Reserve. 169827 vital protection and habitat to the honeyeaters. The Governor's visit comes after an announcement by DELWP that a successful breeding season had resulted in around 200 wild helmeted honeyeaters - the highest number since the recovery program began in 1989. This increase in numbers became obvious when senior ornithologist at DELWP, Bruce Quin fed the birds resulting in five sightings of the endangered helmeted honeyeater, which
Mrs Dessau described as delightfully ‘vibrant’ in colour. Mrs Dessau commended Macclesfield Primary School on their 20-year involvement with the Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater, whom she also praised on their incredible contribution and work. “We know a fair bit about the helmeted honeyeater, because it’s our emblem and we know how important it is to be helping ensure these beautiful little birds don’t become extinct.
“But there is nothing like coming here into this natural habitat to get the true sense of urgency on the one hand, but also the true appreciation on the wonderful work that is being done on the other hand.” “The friends of the helmeted honeyeater are fantastic, and you are going to help make sure that our state emblem stays special, and alive and flourishes,” Mrs Dessau said.
Tools pinched from centre Yarra Ranges CIU is also looking to identify a male caught on CCTV at Pete’s Bargain Centre in Chirnside Park on Monday, 19 June, around 7am. The man is wanted in relation to a burglary at the store where police allege a number of tools were stolen. Police are seeking assistance from the public to identify the male. Anyone with information is asked to phone Senior Constable Chris Young on 9739 2371 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Heartfelt donation A Mount Evelyn man has travelled to the UK to give his 500th donation of platelets. I recently learned of the accomplishment of one of our Yarra Valley residents. A Mount Evelyn man who has travelled to the UK to give his 500th donation of platelets at the Blood Donor centre in Birmingham. In the past 12 years, he also made his 480th and 490th donations at the Birmingham centre. The other 497 donations were made here in Melbourne. What an amazing accomplishment! Platelet transfusion can be the difference between life and death. Conditions such as leukaemia and medical treatments like chemotherapy can decrease a person’s platelet count, requiring a donation from the public. Donating platelets is similar to making a blood donation. This generous giving by just one person raised my interest and my research shows we need many more people to

become blood donors and we also need many more people to become organ donors. In 2016, with the blessing of their families, 503 donors gave 1447 Australians a new chance at life. I encourage everyone to consider becoming an organ donor - at any given time there are roughly 1400 Australians on a life-saving organ transplant waiting list. One organ and tissue donor can transform the lives of 10 or more people. Sadly, there are some myths that do turn people away from joining an organ donor list. For example, some people think they
are too old to go on the donor list. This is not true - age is no barrier, and there are examples of people over 80 who became organ donors. Some people believe that if they register as a donor, the doctor would not try as hard to save their life - this is incorrect. A doctor’s first priority is to try and save their patient’s life, irrespective of whatever list they are on. Most importantly, when deciding to become a donor you need to discuss your choice with your family. Many families find it hard at a very emotional time to give permission for their loved one’s organs to be donated. Making your wishes known makes the decision so much easier for your family. David and I have both made it very clear to our families that any useful “bits” are to be donated and all of our children and their partners are now on the register. Please visit www.donatelife.gov.au to learn more on becoming a donor.
‘Hello’ to healthier drinking habits By Wendy Williamson Help is at hand for Hills residents wanting to change their drinking habits, according to one local woman. Eastern Melbourne Primary Health Network (EMPHN) has partnered with ‘Hello Sunday Morning’ and its ‘Daybreak’ app to support people to limit their consumption of alcohol. Hello Sunday Morning is a not-for profit organisation which has worked with over 130,000 people and recently won the Google Impact Challenge for its innovative use of technology to address problematic alcohol use. Its app has grown to be the largest
online movement for alcohol behaviour change in the world. The ‘Mail’ spoke to a hills local, who wished to be known as ‘Jess’ for this story, who said the app had made a huge difference. I wouldn’t be where I am now without it,” she said. “I would absolutely recommend it.” She said the app eased her feelings of isolation, showing her that there were lots of people out there in a similar situation. Through the app they support each other with ‘hugs’ or messages of affirmation.
“It’s amazing how much better you feel when you write down what you are feeling and share it,” she said. She said the immediacy of the support offered by the app was a bonus. “It can take months to get into rehab or counselling,“ she said. “The app support is available straightaway and is an additional platform to any other support you are getting.” EMPHN CEO Robin Whyte said data modelling in Victoria indicated 37 per cent of the population drank weekly, and 8.9 per cent of these required treatment to address harmful drinking levels.

Labor runs out of steam? By Peter Douglas A proposed $9 million discovery centre at Emerald Lake hangs in the balance, after expected funding from the State Government failed to arrive. La Trobe MP Jason Wood on Thursday 22 June took to Federal Parliament in a bid to convince the Victorian Labor Party to come good with funding, which would see the proposal gain further momentum. Mr Wood last year announced a bold plan to turn Puffing Billy into a ‘mega tourism destination’. Along with a discovery centre, this plan included the restoration of the Red Rattler trains, which would transport passengers from the Melbourne central business district to the Belgrave start-point of Puffing Billy. The plan also included the creation of the Villages of Mount Dandenong Walk and the opening of the Bullen Bullen Indigenous Tours. Mr Wood told the House that Victorian Labor is “all out of steam when it comes to our community”. “With the beautiful Belgrave Trestle Bridge, it’s a fantastic trip (on Puffing Billy) where we have so many international and local tourists who basically sit out the back of an open carriage with their feet out,” Mr Wood said. “However, when they stop at Lakeside, in inclement weather, they’re desperate to do something. “That’s why in the last federal election, myself and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull committed $5.5 million to the Emerald Discovery Centre, something I’ve very proud of.” Though Mr Wood said Victorian Labor failed to deliver during the recent State Budget. “Sadly, though, in the last State Labor budget, we were expecting some

In April last year, Mr Wood visited Steamrail Victoria to discuss the restoration of the old Red Rattler trains with the Clark twins, Tom and Kevin, from the ElecRail Divison of Steamrail Victoria.
good news, but the money did not arrive,” Mr Wood said. “Can I call on the State Labor Government to get out there and actually support Puffing Billy. “It’s internationally recognised ... 500,000 tourists go there each year. “Let’s get behind this; let’s create jobs and let’s create something Victorians will be proud of right across Aus-
Kevin Clark said ElecRail had been enthusiastic about the proposal. “ElecRail is currently working cooperatively with Metro trains to again enable the preserved Red Rattler to operate a special excursion,” he said. “While fundamentally in good shape, the train needs a repaint ... and safety enhancements are also required.”

More legal help in the hills By Peter Douglas Hills residents now have increased access to free legal assistance. The Dandenong Ranges arm of the Eastern Community Legal Centre (ECLC), located at the Monbulk Living and Learning Centre, has officially opened its doors to the public for a sixmonth trial period. The aim of this service is to help address a critical gap for surrounding residents. With similar centres already located within Healesville and Yarra Junction, co-ordinator of the Yarra Ranges Office, Anita Koochew, said the response had been strong in just the first few weeks. Ms Koochew said the Monbulk location is ideal, offering a purpose-built room that provides both security and anonymity for those seeking to use the service. The legal centre provides free legal help to address issues ranging from family violence, debt and more. ECLC chief executive officer, Michael Smith, said they were excited to extend the service. “ECLC has worked closely with communities in the Yarra Ranges for many years,” he said. “Through this new outreach service, we hope to build stronger relationships with the Monbulk community and improve access to support through our partnerships with local health, housing and family violence agencies.” However, the success of the latest outreach is a far cry from just months ago, when the in-place outreach centres were under threat due to funding cuts. But Yarra Ranges Council, with the support of MPs Jason Wood and Tony Smith, led the charge to secure funding, ending months of concern

No new taxes
No SEAL of approval
Cupful of disgust
Just like his attempt to couple a cancer compensation bill with legislation to break up the CFA, Daniel Andrews is coupling legislation to cut payroll tax with a bill to introduce some of his 11 new taxes. Yet again, Daniel Andrews is trying to hold parliament to ransom over his political games. Before the election, Daniel Andrews promised no new taxes or tax increases but since then, Daniel Andrews has increased taxes by nearly $4 billion. The Liberals will work to separate Daniel Andrews’ tax increases from the proposed payroll tax cut. The Liberals will support measures to cut taxes but we will oppose Daniel Andrews’ new taxes which break his promise to Victorians and further increases the cost of living on families. Christine Fyffe, Member for Evelyn.
I hear that Hills kids will no longer have the opportunity to apply for Year 7 entry to Box Hill High School (co-educational public secondary) to be part of a Select Entry Accelerated Learning initiative. This school has been operating this program for 24 years, giving gifted and talented local students a place to meet like-minded individuals and to study and learn in a unique environment. The Department of Education is forcing the school and supporting staff to cancel this initiative for the foreseeable future, despite the fact children have already sat the exams for entry to this program for next year. This public high school is topping Victoria in VCE results. (Victorian Education Minister) Mr James Merlino, did you stand by as this proposal was written, or were you one of the henchmen? Vicky Bland, Tecoma.
Well done to Plastic Bag Free Dandenong Ranges and Swap the Straw Dandenong Ranges for raising public awareness and actively encouraging alternatives to single-use plastic bags and straws, as featured in the article (‘Mail’, Tuesday, 13 June). There also needs to be a push to discourage the use of disposable coffee cups, or, at least, make it easier for consumers to reject them. I was astounded, and absolutely disgusted, when on Saturday at a local football match a friend was told that her re-usable coffee cup could not be filled, as to do so would be against health and safety regulations. This comment came from an independent, mobile coffee merchant operating within the grounds, not the football club itself, which I can only hope would have had more sense. Liz Arnold, Emerald.

Christmas to shine By Peter Douglas A Monbulk Business Network fundraising committee is on a mission to brighten up Christmas in town for 2017. Over the past 18 months, Shirlene Bisschop and Joke Fogden have been helping to prepare festive decorations for Monbulk, but they feel that it’s become tired and outdated.
So, they’ve set a goal of raising $30,000 for Christmas garlands, which they hope will go from one end of town to the other. So far, thanks in part to the generosity of local business, they’ve raised $10,000, according to Shirlene. “We have been fund-raising through flower stalls, sausage sizzles and, most recently, with a win-

ery tour which was very successful,” she said. “We have also had fantastic support from local traders through putting little collection tins on their counters, and generous customers putting in their loose change, which all helps to contributing to our goal for this year.” To raise further funds, the committee is holding a ‘Christmas in

July’ fund-raiser on 15 July at The Watering Hole Tavern at 6.30pm. At just $65 per head, and with live entertainment and a threecourse meal, it represents a great night out and a fantastic way to help the town. Tickets are available at The Watering Hole, Jenny’s Shoppe, The Salon and Blue Gum Cafe.

Kids get inclusive By Peter Douglas A small team of Emerald Secondary College students has been busy promoting diversity over the past months. The students, who call themselves PRIDE (Promoting Respect, Inclusion and Diversity Equally) have worked hard to develop Diversity Acceptance Week, which was held from Monday 5 June to Friday 9 June. Principal Jodie Doble said the group had worked dillgently to achieve their goals. “Throughout the week, they’ve engaged with numerous agencies to come to the college to help students understand differences, with the hope of reducing fear of difference, which they believe leads to bullying, segregation and mental health concerns,” she said. Just some of the activities included blind soccer, deaf disco and
wheelchair basketball. In addition, the canteen has supported the students’ goals through providing a diverse cultural menu, with a specific country focus each day. “Their ultimate goal is to create an inclusive community, one where everyone is accepted for who they are, not what they are,” Ms Doble said. The group has also launched a 40-hour Diversity Challenge, where students were to give up something for 40 hours. This is so they can experience life without things like social media, headphones and screens. All funds raised throughout the week went towards the new Community Inclusion Garden, which the students designed in collaboration with a landscape designer. This includes a sensory garden, calming breakout spaces, an amphitheatre and a walkway.

By Derek Schlennstedt Thousands of residents from the Dandenong Ranges took to the streets of Belgrave with their homemade lanterns over the weekend to help light up the night. The eleventh annual lantern parade was nothing short of dazzling as thousands of glowing lanterns, bright lights and radiant fire twirlers dotted Belgrave main street with a string of vibrant and scintillating array of colours, that lit up the smiling, glowing faces of the participants.

It’s time for the smaller jobs With the cooler months closing in, Richard and Beth Henke from Hire a Hubby Upwey continue to employ the tools, experience and determination to ensure their customers have the dream home they’ve always desired - inside and out! “We enjoy being able to complete work both inside and out for our customers, but the cooler months are great to get those smaller jobs done,” Richard said. Whether customers are in dire need of a home renovation due to general wear and tear, or if they simply want to modernise the interiors or exteriors of their houses, Richard and Beth are the team for the job. From plaster repairs, to tiling to interior painting, the list of jobs that this passionate husband and wife team can do is far from short. “In the summer time we tend to focus on our exterior problems and forget about those things inside that need fixing,” Beth explained. “The wet weather comes and suddenly you realise there is a leak inside or you realise that those cracked tiles in the bathroom really do need fixing. But given how madly we all work these days it’s hard to find the time to DIY, which is where we come in.” Property maintenance is an all-year-round job that the

Fernlea to keep focus From the outside, Fernlea House looks like any other ordinary home nestled in the hills. Inside, things are far from ordinary. In fact, they’re extraordinary. Caring for people of all ages who are in the palliative stages of an illness, or who have a chronic condition or dementia, Fernlea House is the only respite service of its type in the Dandenong Ranges. As chief executive officer of Fernlea house Sue Mclvor explained, the staff and volunteers of Fernlea provide a welcoming and compassionate environment for those faced with the challenges of living with dying. “What sets Fernlea apart is the absolute focus on the individual and their changing needs,” Sue said. “Within a home-like setting, Fernlea offers activities tailored to the client’s interests and abilities, a home-cooked morning tea and lunch, as well as complementary therapies such as reiki and massage.” Although Fernlea employs clinical staff, the focus is not on guest’s medical conditions, but on improving their quality of life. Away from a medical setting, Fernlea House gives guests back some of the control over their lives
they have lost through illness. “Fernlea gives guests a break from being defined by their illness, as well as giving their carers a break from the often relentless and emotional task of looking after a loved one who is seriously ill,” Sue said. Fernlea House was opened in 2003 after a long community campaign for accessible palliative care in the hills. That need has now spread and Fernlea also offers a centre-based service in Berwick on Fridays, as well as caring for people in their own home through its Fernlea Life Care business. Together, these services enable people with life limiting illness to stay independent and in their own homes for longer. “Engaging with the community has always been key to Fernlea’s success,” Sue explained. “More than 60 local volunteers give their time to Fernlea each week, driving guests to and from the centres, providing support to guests or working in the op shop - in fact, Fernlea couldn’t do the work it does without its volunteers!” If you are caring for someone with a palliative illness and need a break, or if you would like to become a Fernlea volunteer, give Fernlea House a call on 5968 3895.

Bach to the bush By Wendy Williamson Classical music lovers along the route of cellist Anthony Albrecht’s ‘Bach to Bush’ tour are in for a treat. The mellifluous tones of a quality cello are hard to beat, especially in the hands of an accomplished musician. In his two-hour concerts Albrecht performs selections from J.S. Bach’s stunning suites for solo cello, interspersed with other short, early works for the instrument. He also talks about his life as a musician and why the music he plays is such an invaluable part of our culture. “I endeavour to play the cello as it would have been played in Baroque times,” says Albrecht, who grew up in Newcastle, NSW, and won a prestigious scholarship to participate in the Julliard School’s Historical Performance program. He is currently based in London as a Guildhall School of Music and Drama research scholar but returns to Australia regularly for performances with Pinchgut
Opera and the Australian Haydn Ensemble. This talented young musician has recorded for ABC Classics and VIA Records (New York City). In his busy ‘Bach to Bush’ tour of the east coast he is scheduled to visit nearly 30 different venues, mainly rural and regional, where he finds audiences particularly receptive. He is especially looking forward to performing in Olinda, where his greatuncle lives, and Healesville, where he has friends. He has a soft spot for the Yarra Valley and Ranges. On Sunday 2 July at 2pm Albrecht will perform at Cosmediclinic, 59 Healesville-Kooweerup Road, Healesville. On Tuesday 4 July at 7pm the venue is Olinda Hall, corner of Olinda-Monbulk and The Georgian Road. There will be another concert just down the road on Wednesday 5 July at 7pm, at the Melbourne Rudolf Steiner Seminar, 37A Wellington Park Drive, Warranwood. Tickets at the door or at www.anthonyalbrecht.com.
The worst of the worst Transformers: The Last Knight (M) Starring Mark Wahlberg, Laura Haddock, Anthony Hopkins Transformers: The Last Knight is an interminable slog of a film by Michael Bay, one of Hollywood’s worst directors. The driving conflict, which involves a lazy mash-up of a rogue planet approaching Earth with Arthurian legends, is very vague and progresses with a punishing lack of threat or urgency. Returning from 2014’s Transformers: Age of Extinction, Mark Wahlberg fails to deliver his normally dependable sardonic charisma, helming a cast of flat, one-note characters. Mediocre popcorn filmmakers like Guy Ritchie, Paul W.S. Anderson and even Zack Snyder have some redeeming qualities in their films, but Michael Bay really is a talentless hack. Bay has always valued grand, explosion-filled spectacle, but he
cannot properly structure action in this movie. The battle sequences in The Last Knight are severely cluttered, overedited and broken up by laboured, out-of-place gags. Though somewhat toned down from his previous Transformers films, The Last Knight is still full of Bay’s bad habits: inconsistent tone, lazy stereotypes, blatant objectification of women and hyperactive, unfocused direction. The scant highlights are Sir Anthony Hopkins, who is clearly having a blast as an eccentric scenery-chewing historian, and young actress Isabela Moner’s earnest, star-making performance as a brave homeless girl. Sloppy and intensely boring, Transformers: The Last Knight may be the worst film of 2017, if only for the fact that I didn’t have to fight to stay awake during Fifty Shades Darker. - Seth Hynes

Healesville just too good By Cameron Hutchison AFL YARRA RANGES Round 10 and the race to the finals has begun. Olinda and Wandin are sharing top spot with Healesville only two points behind in third. Woori Yallock have a six-point buffer on Upwey in fifth and Mount Evelyn are four points behind in sixth. Seville and Belgrave are still holding onto top spot with Yarra Glen in third, one game behind. Powelltown are only one game behind Yarra Glen in fourth but two wins clear of Alexandra in fifth. Kinglake are still an outside chance to make the final five, one game behind Alexandra. Netball Division 1: Olinda are one and a half games clear of Wandin in top spot and unlikely to lose that position, Wandin are half a game clear of Woori Yallock in third. Monbulk Hawks are two games behind Woori Yallock in fourth with Warburton another game behind in fifth. Division 2: Belgrave have a hold on top spot and are unlikely to drop from that mantle. Yarra Glen is two wins behind in second with Yarra Junction a further game behind in third. Powelltown are half a game behind Yarra Junction in fourth with Yea another half a game behind in fifth. Kinglake are making a charge and are only half a game out of the five. The Under 18s has Emerald and Mount Evelyn sharing top spot with Wandin only one game behind in third. Healesville sit fourth, one-anda-half games behind Wandin with Upwey one and a half games behind Healesville in fifth. Warburton-Millgrove and Woori Yallock shares sixth spot, one game behind Upwey with Gembrook in eighth position. Monbulk still have a chance to make the final eight as do Yarra Glen. This week we are promoting awareness around Domestic Violence issues. Be the Change! Your Club, Your Community. Together we can all make a difference. Division 1 Seniors Football Healesville 14.12(96) d Gembrook
Upwey-Tecoma came out firing in its milestone match.
Cockatoo 8.5(53) Healesville travelled to Gembrook on Saturday and came away with a win, keeping them in third position. They got off to a good start kicking five goals to two in the first. They held Gembrook goalless in the second quarter and increased their lead to 36 points at half-time. Healesville kicked another 4.1 to 2 goals in the third term and had control. Gembrook outscored Healesville in the last, kicking 4.3 to 3.3 but the game was all over really at half-time. Healesville Best: N. Mende, D. Plozza, N. Aldridge (4 goals), A. Davies (2 goals), S. Gordon (5 goals), A. Fraraccio. Gembrook-Cockatoo Best: D. Welsh (2 goals), D. Leversha, R. Causer, S. Martin, S. Gramc (1 goal), P. Gramc. Monbulk 21.17(143) d Emerald 9.10(64) Monbulk have skipped away from Emerald with a big win on Saturday. Emerald started off slow, kicking 2.4 to 6.3 in the first and was behind by 23 points at quarter time. Monbulk increased the pressure in the second term, kicking 5.4 to 2.3 to have a commanding lead of 42 points at half-time. They continued with a massive 6.8 third quarter to only 1.1 and the game was all over at three-quarter time. Both sides kicked four goals in the last but Monbulk were just too strong all over the ground in the end. Monbulk Best: M. Langworthy (4 goals), S. Williams, J. Schille (1 goal),
S. Van Seters (1 goal), D. Salan (3 goals), S. Gough. Emerald Best: L. Sheppard, D. Karacsonyi, J. Donders, B. Wilson, M. Dompietro, T. Wilson. Wandin 19.12(126) d Mount Evelyn 16.9(105) Mount Evelyn was unable to chalk up a win over Wandin this season. The opening quarter was even with Wandin only holding a four-point lead at quarter time. Wandin got the break in the second, kicking 5.3 to 3.1 and they were in front by 18 points at half-time. Another massive third quarter by both sides had Wandin kicking seven goals to six. Mount Evelyn just could not find a way to make any inroads into Wandin’s lead. Wandin’s accuracy was under question in the last kicking 2.6 to 3.2 but they still came away with bragging rights at the end of the day. Wandin Best: S. Dwyer (10 goals), B. Harvey, R. Ross (1 goal), J. Byrne, D. Hirst, M. Polkinghorne (2 goals). Mount Evelyn Best: D. Wootton, M. Gibbons, J. Fellows, D. Kift, S. Martin (1 goal), B. Doyle. Olinda Ferny Creek 13.23(101) d Warburton Millgrove 3.4(22) Olinda Ferny Creek completely dominated Warburton-Millgrove on Saturday. It was a slow start for both sides in the first with only four goals being kicked but Olinda still had a 19-point lead at quarter time. They increased that lead to 25 points at halftime and always looked in control. Warburton-Millgrove failed to kick a goal after half time but Olinda kicked another seven majors. Their only con-
cern is that they also kicked 13 behinds and come finals time that will need to be rectified. Olinda Ferny Creek Best: M. Hottes (2 goals), L. Hill (1 goal), T. Millwood (1 goal), J. Wallis, B. Cooling, H. Greenall (1 goal).. Warburton-Millgrove Best: D. Morris, P. Hay, T. Marr, R. Humphrey, T. Walker (1 goal), J. Walker. Upwey Tecoma 10.11(71) d Woori Yallock 5.13(43) Upwey-Tecoma have put themselves one game clear in fifth after a come from behind win over Woori Yallock on Saturday. Woori Yallock got the early lead, kicking 3.3 to 1.1 in the first and a 14-point lead at quarter time. Scoring was low in the second quarter with both sides only managing one major apiece. Upwey had more scoring shots but could not get the ball through the big sticks and the deficit was now reduced to 11 points. Woori Yallock were relentless in front of goal in the third quarter but Upwey held them to 1.7 while they kicked 3.2 and the lead was certainly a gettable four points in Woori’s favour going into the last. An injury to Woori’s R. Allen worked in Upwey’s favour as their forwards could find some space. Upwey turned it on in the last and kicked away with 5.4 to Woori Yallock’s two behinds to come away with a big win by 28 points. Upwey-Tecoma Best: B. Duncan, L. Burke (1 goal), D. Devers, J. Hackett (2 goals), H. Stanley. Woori Yallock Best: L. Boontjes, J. Adams, B. Arnold, R. Allen, K. Thompson, J. Matthews. Division 2 Seniors Football Belgrave 19.13(127) d Alexandra 17.10(112) Belgrave have survived a last quarter challenge from Alexandra to stay on top of the ladder. Belgrave got off to an early lead kicking 5.5 to 2.3 and earning a 20-point buffer at quarter time. Alexandra fought back in the second term kicking 6.2 to 3.3, reducing the lead to nine points at the main break and leaving Belgrave with some work to do at half-time. The third quarter was tight and tough with Belgrave kicking 4.3 to 2.4 and they had increased their lead to 14 points at three-quarter time, at this point it looked like they were going to go on with it. The last quarter was one of the best quarters seen this
season. Alexandra took the lead with about eight minutes to go but could not hold back the fast finishing Belgrave. It was a goal feast with twelve goals being kicked come the final siren. Belgrave Best: J. Brown (1 goal), Y. Curtis (2 goals), N. Somervaille, J. Webb (2 goals), J. McDermott (1 goal), M. Johnson (2 goals). Alexandra Best: L. Ragg (1 goal), J. Brereton, C. Tranter (2 goals), B. Norris (5 goals), S. Woollard, J. Purcell. Kinglake 20.14(134) def Yea 9.6(60) Kinglake sit in sixth position and now one game clear of Yea and only one game out of the final five after a big 74-point win on Saturday. Mixed bag for Monbulk juniors vs the real deal MONBULK JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB ROUND 9 and Monbulk Junior Football Club travelled to Wandin, Seville, Woori Yallock and Emerald to face off against strong opponents. A mixed bag of success on the field, but, once again, the club’s philosophy being on participation success off the field was apparent as the club continues to grow in numbers. UNDER 9 The players again showed improvement and worked on being first to the ball and one on one with opponent. Awards: R. Crutchley, T. Vincent, R. Koelewyn, M. Koelewyn, J.Thorp. UNDER 10 MAROON The boys started very well, control-
ling the first quarter. The opponents improved over the next few quarters and a pretty even contest. The team continued to improve and a few guys stepped up that had been working hard on the track and played some solid footy. Awards: F. Lewis, F. Surridge, W. Davidson-Tuck, K. Dockery. UNDER 10 GOLD Great work. The team continues to do the team things and work hard for one another. Tackling was a great feature today against a bigger opposition. Awards: B. Downey, H. Dickinson, J. Bohun, J. Dawson, O. Blandthorn. UNDER 11 A great performance by the Under 11s today, only two points separated the two teams at three-quarter time.
Hard pressure and plenty of spirit about. Monbulk 0.1(1) def by Woori Yallock 1.5(11) Awards: B. McDonald, G. Ryan, J. Abraham, J. Doyle, H. McConchie. UNDER 12 GIRLS Some strong, fierce tackling on field today by both teams. The goal was to transfer the ball better than the opposition and to take strong marks to own possession of the game. Well done to the girls for a team playing out four quarters. Many more challenges for the rest of the season. Awards: J. Farmer, S. Beecroft, A. Theeboom, A. Coffey, B. McDermott. UNDER 12 A big focus today was around what the team does; not what the opposition does. A complete performance from all
the players. Monbulk 17.8(110) d Wandin 0.0(0) Awards: J. Blandthorn, T. Koelewyn, L. Smith, C. Hussey, A. Bohun UNDER 14 GOLD A great game between two contested teams. Barge, M. McGregor, J. Downey, A. Whyman, J. Spencer. UNDER 14 MAROON Big test today against a stronger, bigger, running side. Great third quar-
ter, boys; keeping them goalless and scoring one themselves. Plenty to keep on learning and developing. Keep your heads up, boys. Monbulk 1.1(7) def by GembrookCockatoo 12.10(82) Awards: H. Fleming, J. Niclasen, L. Fransen, G. Ross, J. Davis. UNDER 16 A great effort by the group, stuck to the structures well and switched the ball at most opportunities.
