He was told by onlookers on the Eastern Freeway at the time that his bike was clipped by a car, causing him and his bike to strike the rear of a hatch and launch metres in the air. At first, doctors thought they’d amputate his left leg - which remains heavily scarred and swollen by lymphoedema. During a gruelling year of rehab, Mr Donald defied doubts that he would ever walk again.

In the past few years, he’s got off the couch and undergone a training regime that dropped more than 40 kilos. And since catching the fitness bug, he’s been driven to extreme physical challenges. Back in the gym, Mr Donald is gearing for Trifecta Weekend - a series of three obstacle-course races totalling 42 kilometres - in Bright in October. A keen writer, he’s hoping to publish a journal of his trek.

He’s getting inspired by reading tales of Mexico’s Tarahumara runners, regarded as among the world’s best ultra-marathoners. They run in sandals recycled from tyres, Mr Donald says. If he was to try the Everest challenge again, Mr Donald vowed to do more distance running and hillwork to shave down his finishing time. “I’d love to do it again.”

during the event. Exhausted over the closing stages, he ran past a local boy and they ‘high-fived’. It gave him the impetus to keep going. He was struck then by the thought of how he’d overcome the odds to get there. Fourteen years ago, he had barely survived a critical motorbike crash that severed an artery, and shattered his leg and pelvis.

It’s a long way from barely surviving a motorbike crash to finishing a marathon on the giddy heights of Everest. Some years ago, Berwick gym regular Colin Donald had faced possible amputation of his leg, and a fight to ever walk again. Now he has just returned from running in perhaps the world’s toughest race - the Tenzing-Hillary Everest Marathon on 29 May. It was his first marathon - a nine-hour, high-altitude ordeal that was tougher than the 34-year-old tradie could imagine. Along the way he raised more than $2000 for the Australian Himalayan Foundation to help rebuild earthquake-ravaged schools in Nepal. “It’s probably my second greatest achievement, apart from learning how to walk again (after my accident),” Mr Donald said. There were runners that didn’t start the race, let alone finish. Six were evacuated ill from the Everest Base Camp starting line, one runner died during the initial 14-day hike to the camp. “It was pretty full on,” said Mr Donald - who raised his hands in triumph as he crossed the finish line. “When I finished I was broken. I was close to collapsing. “My knees felt like they were blown, my twisted ankle was three times the size and I could barely breathe.” Thin oxygen was just one of the challenges, as well as the cold, the spartan diet and the unformed tracks along icy, rocky rises and descents. Mr Donald lost eight kilograms

Casey gymnasts shine in Special Olympics comp Man to face drug charges
By Cam Lucadou-Wells Three Casey gymnasts soared to great heights at an inaugural Special Olympics state competition. Miles Green, who secured the second place, Curtis Damato, third, and Christopher Sizer, fourth, starred in routines on six apparatus during the Queen's Birthday long weekend comp. It was the first time that Gymnastics Victoria included a Special Olympic section in their state championships in Melbourne. The three train at a weekly Access All Abilities program at YMCA Berwick and Endeavour Hills leisure centres. Centre director Monica Ellis said the trio had come a long way since starting gymnastics. “They have achieved so much and we couldn’t be more proud.” Ms Ellis said the program taught children and adults with physical and intellectual disabilities in a “safe and inclusive atmosphere”.

A man has been charged after being allegedly found with ecstasy and cocaine at a Narre Warren licensed venue early on 24 June. Police searched the man and seized the drugs and cash from him during a check of the Lauderdale Road venue about 12.15am. The 25-year-old Narre Warren man had been dealing drugs inside the venue, police were allegedly told. During a search warrant of the man’s home in Jacksons Road, police allegedly seized more drugs, drug paraphernalia and a large amount of cash. The man was charged with drug offences and possessing proceeds of crime. He was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 17 August.
Casey bursting at seams By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey has grown to the brink of 300,000 people - adding nearly 47,000 people in the past five years, according to 2016 Census data. The reported population was 299, 301 for the Australian Bureau of Statistics census conducted on 9 August, though the survey was blighted by multiple cyber attacks and online
crashes. Casey’s rapid growth is reflected by the addition of 14,000 extra dwellings since 2011. There are now more than 100,000 homes. The municipality’s median age is also rising, up from 33 to 34 years. This is still younger than the national population, which is on average 38 years old. Weekly household income has risen
(from $1342 to $1554), while monthly mortgage repayments are unchanged at $1733. Median weekly rents however have risen from $295 to $340 - slightly higher than the national average. A higher percentage of residents are renting (21.3 per cent) since 2011, though a significant majority own their homes or own them with a mortgage
(75.3 per cent). Nearly a quarter of households have three or more vehicles. The top nominated ancestries are still English (19.3 per cent) and Australian (18.4 per cent), but Indian (5.9 per cent) has risen from fifth to third. More than half of Casey’s residents are born in Australia, dipping from 61 per cent to 56 per cent. The next most
common birthplaces are India, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, England and New Zealand. More than half follow Christianity, though the most popular religion was ‘no religion’ (24.3 per cent). It was followed by Catholic (23.9 per cent), ‘not stated’ (8 per cent), Anglican (7.9 per cent) and Islam (7.4 per cent).

Helping Mick’s last gift By Cam Lucadou-Wells and Bonny Burrows
Mick Morland was the life of the party. time and effort,” he said. And that’s what he had been doing since he took on the presidency of a kindergarten in Narre Warren 30 years ago. A passionate Tigers supporter, he was an Upper Beaconsfield premiership player and reserves coach, president of Narre Warren Junior Football Club and one of its coaches of the decade. Rotary Club of Berwick President Mark Caulfield remembers his friend and fellow Rotarian as a generous man who gave his community his all. A “reliable and hard-working” member of Rotary for 23 years, Mr Morland knew how to crack a joke, but was also known for his strong work ethic and tireless efforts in helping grow the ageing club. He served on many Rotary committees, including a stint as president from 2012-’13 He helped enter partnerships with Casey to provide picnic tables and the Rotary Rotunda in Pioneer Park, a rotunda in Buchanan Park and ongoing work with the Casey North Community Information and Support Service, the Australia Day festivities at Pioneer Park and the Carols by Candlelight celebrations in Berwick. In 2009, Mr Morland was officially recognised for his Rotary commitments with the prestigious Paul Harris. “He welcomed all new comers to the club and upheld the ideals of Rotary to do good in the world,” Mr Caulfield said. There was also Mr Morland’s renowned “wicked sense of humour”. Casey councillor Milla Gilic recalled this piece of golden advice from Mr Morland just after winning her seat on the council. “See this Deputy Mayor medallion, they don’t tell ya, but just in case of emergency crisis, it’s actually gold foil wrapped chocolate!” It would have only been dispensed days after Mr Morland had lost his own seat in November’s council elections. Councillor Susan Serey said her former Edrington Ward colleague would often joke that
Kay and Mick Morland. “Susan’s the beauty and the brains, so give her all the work and I’ll just take the credit”. He had an endearing way of being - a relaxed, self-depracating Aussie style, a love of fun and a good laugh, Cr Serey said. “That was Mick’s way of making everyone feel that they belonged and were a part of our community.” Casey councillor Wayne Smith, who served alongside Mr Morland from the first term of Casey Council, marvelled at his work ethic. While serving as a councillor, Mr Morland was running a cleaning business. He would wake at 3am to drive back into town from weekend council conferences to do a cleaning shift. “As mayor, he was probably the hardest working mayor we’ve had. He turned up to every-

Mourners will be making a fitting tribute to longserving Berwick and Casey councillor Mick Morland, so highly regarded for his unstinting community service. Since his sudden death, mourners have been requested to donate to the philanthropic Casey Cardinia Foundation in lieu of flowers. Floral tributes had been flooding in to the Morland family home after Mr Morland was fatally struck by a car on the Princes Highway, near Wilson Botanic Park, while he was out walking on 24 June. His wife Kay Morland contacted Casey Cardinia Foundation executive officer Therese Howell and asked if the foundation would accept donations from mourners in lieu of flowers. “Kay expressed that she felt it appropriate for any donations to benefit the community that Mick loved so dearly, through the Casey Cardinia Foundation,” Ms Howell said. An array of community groups - football clubs and leagues, SES, Guides, Scouts, Rotary, Neighbourhood Watch, environment and church groups - have expressed their grief and shock about the horrifying news. All spoke warmly of the husband, father and grandfather and his support for their causes. Among his pet campaigns were a library in Hampton Park, a new track for Casey Little Athletics, an aquatic centre in Narre Warren and the Bunjil Place complex. Casey Mayor Sam Aziz paid tribute to the “decades of dedication” from the seven-term councillor. “He was easy to work with, he had his heart in the right place and he was compassionate - these are rare qualities these days, unfortunately. “I’ve lost a dear friend, the community has lost a statesman.” Cr Aziz lamented how Mr Morland could have lost his life during such a “benign, pleasant activity” as taking his routine evening walk to manage his type two diabetes. Casey Council - which has lowered its flags to half-mast - will decide on a lasting tribute with Mr Morland’s family, Cr Aziz said. “He was devoted to his wife, Kay, his children and his grandchildren, and our thoughts are with them as they grieve.” Mr Morland is the second longest-serving Casey councillor, behind Wayne Smith, and stood as a Liberal candidate for State Parliament. Mayors Jim Memeti of Greater Dandenong and Brett Owen of Cardinia, Victoria Police and a raft of politicians from several allegiances have paid tribute. State Opposition Leader Matthew Guy described the Liberal life-member as “an institution in Casey, a great bloke with a heart of gold”. Gembrook MP Brad Battin said he would be remembered for the many things he delivered for the community he loved for decades. “All of the City of Casey will miss the man with that moustache,” he said. “Thanks Mick, you will be missed.” When he received an Order of Australia Medal in January last year, he told Star News that all his years of service had made him realise how many people did not put their hands up to help the community. “I always believed that if you want to be involved in your community you have to put in the

Van Vliet brothers rev it up By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Narre Warren North band of brothers have made history by scooping all the places in Australia’s premier off-road racing event. Mitchell, Jake and Cooper Van Vliet finished 1, 2 and 3 on their quad bikes ahead of an international field at the Finke Desert Race on the Queen’s Birthday weekend. After snaring his third Finke title, Mitchell, 25, is now the most crowned rider in the race’s 41-year history. For good measure, brother Harry was part of their fuel-stop crew during this record feat. According to locals, this year’s track between Alice Springs and Finke was at its roughest and dustiest, Mitchell said. Over the 492-kilometre return trip, Mitchell tore off an average 108km/h across an array of sand, rock, bumps and pitfalls. He slowed to about 80km/h as he wrestled his bike over a 120-kilometre section of woops or sand bumps. Mitchell had the luxury of sitting down during about 15 kilometres of his ride. It’s difficult to replicate the challenging terrain while training in Narre Warren North, Mitchell said. “The race is like nothing in this world. Even the Americans who go in
the Baja (in Mexico) say it is another step crazier. “You’ve got to be 100 per cent focused to make sure nothing jumps out and catches you off-guard.” Of this year’s 600-plus riders, about 200 failed to finish. Medics apparently ran out of tubes to inflate riders’ lungs that popped during rib-shattering falls. Over his career, Mitchell has won two national championships, raced in Europe and is a current national champion in China. He’s also broken both shoulders, both wrists, both ankles and his jaw. “It’s such a physically demanding sport, but it’s more mental than anything,” he says. “If you get the mindset that you’re going to win, you’re going to push out the negativity.” At age two or three, he boarded his first motorised bike - a PW 50. Then at 12, he swapped to the four-wheelers that his father Robert raced. Mitchell’s sights are set also on breaking freestyle records - being the first in the world to jump 60 metres and the first Australian to back-flip a quadbike in dirt. He and his brothers have also formed All4FMX, performing a show of freestyle tricks in shows around Australia.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Ian Hardy is among Australia’s first international peacekeepers. The 79-year-old retired policeman, of Narre Warren South, recently re-visited his tour of duty as part of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP). Back in 1964, he was part of the first contingent of Australian police in Cyprus. He had stepped off the plane as a fresh-faced 26-year-old along with 39 other police - recruited to help control tensions between the Turkish and Greek Cypriot regions. He was one of the first volunteers, keen for exotic adventure. Among his first thoughts were: “What the bloody hell have I got involved in?” The UN station was on the ‘Green Line’ - a buffer zone between the territories to the north and south. Mr Hardy said they were peacekeepers without police powers. They could just observe and report, and resolve conflict without getting into conflict. They were issued with mere revolvers in the face of sub-machine guns, rifles and armoured cars. “They made great paperweights,” Mr Hardy said of the revolvers. He remembers patrolling, lunching and talking to the different sides of the dispute, as part of the mission’s years of negotiation efforts. “You didn’t pick sides. You had to be totally independent.” During one investigation, the officers got a tip-off about a missing UN attache, who had

As far as is known, he is still missing.”
At a sunset ceremony on 16 June, Mr Hardy and a contingent of former peace-keepers, dignitaries and senior police marked the upcoming withdrawal of Australian officers from the station. As the only representative from the original mission, Mr Hardy proudly lowered the Australian flag at the station for the last time. A memorial was also unveiled for the three Australian peace-keepers killed on duty in Cyprus.

Socially speaking Following the sudden and shocking death of former City of Casey Councillor Mick Morland, tributes flowed for the man and his family on social media. Well-wishers from all over took to Facebook to join in the outpouring of grief for a man who was the very definition of a pillar of the community: Russell Clark: Thanks for your dedicated service to our community. Rest in peace Mick. Doris Jackson: So so sad ... Vaishnavi Chandravelu: OMG! Such a shock. Su Be: Condolences.
On Monday 26 June came the news that a woman had been arrested for allegedly illegally dumping stacks of newspapers in the south eastern and far eastern suburbs of Melbourne:
It was also on the same Monday that the Cranbourne Berwick News Facebook page shared the news of a woman from Narre Warren who had snagged a share of the first division prize of a recent Tattslotto draw:
Sheila Downey: Maybe these are the papers we saw around Upper Beac a couple of weeks ago? Sarah Wogan: Hopefully I get a paper now? Helen Lockett: Think distribution needs a shake up too! Missy Sprocket: I’m moving, I could have used them. Lol.
Shilo Van Sanden: Not fair ... I thought I had at least one of the winning tickets ... Kim Tastic to Brooke Spinks: Why is this never bloody you! Start buying them would you. Brooke Spinks replied: Ummm it was me. Just keeping it on the downlow so nobody asks me for money. Angelika Adamczuk: It wasn’t me ... booo!

Roundabout of fear By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey councillor Rex Flannery has been warned to stay away from Berwick Springs roundabout protesters, out of fears for his personal safety. Fresh from a trip to the Gaza Strip conflict zone, Cr Flannery was told he’d face a wall of boiling dissent at the protest on 25 June if he didn’t promise to oppose a proposed widening of the estate’s roundabout. In a text message to the councillor, organiser Michael Ball stated: “I cannot be held responsible for residents actions ... “I wanted to let you know just how much community backlash is becoming more evident now the permit has been applied for. “I do not believe your attendance (at the protest) is advisable unless you are going (to) say NO and refuse this application at council.” Mr Ball said he’d warned Cr Flannery after a flare-up between a resident and Casey council officer at a community information session on the issue four days earlier. “It was an uncomfortable situation, a heated exchange. The (officer) stood toe to toe with this resident. “Had I not stepped in, it could have escalated quickly. “I told the council employee to back away and I took the other person away from there.” A Casey spokeswoman said the “very minor” incident “did not detract from what was a constructive and respectful session”. Mr Ball said many residents were upset by the misleading address given for the proposed roundabout works on the planning permit notification. The application states Berwick
Protesters 'object' to the proposed destruction of the Berwick Springs gateway. Springs Promenade as well as 36A Shrives Road, Narre Warren. The latter is the address of the adjoining Hallam Valley Contour Drain and the “location of the land affected”, according to Casey Council. The roundabout is however situated on Greaves Road, Narre Warren South. “There are people who think that it’s trying to reduce the number of objections,” Mr Ball said. Residents were also angry with Cr Flannery for “succumbing to the
pressure” and failing to vote against the issue on 21 February. “He had told us ‘I’ll do everything I can’ ... people expected him to stand up for a better solution.” Cr Flannery, who attended the protest site under the cover of a friend’s car, said he took the warning as a personal threat. “I wanted to go to that rally but I was told they can’t guarantee my personal safety,” Cr Flannery said. The developer Moremac Property Group is applying to widen and shift the roundabout at Greaves Road and
Berwick Springs Promenade to provide access for its Alira estate. Residents are opposed to the Berwick Springs bluestone landscaped gateway being bulldozed, then reinstated as part of the estimated $3.6 million project. While having an “open mind”, Cr Flannery said he couldn’t support Casey spending “hundreds of thousands” of dollars on saving the gateway. “When I was elected to council, my main platform was not to waste money.”
Sentence increased for terror plot man By Casey Neill A Hallam man will spend an extra three years in jail over the Dandenong Anzac Day terror plot following an appeal. In June last year Sevdet Besim pleaded guilty to acts in preparation for, or planning, a terrorist act. Justice Michael Croucher sentenced him to 10 years’ imprisonment with a non-parole period of seven years and six months. But the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions said the sentence was too lenient and asked the Court of Appeal to increase it. Judges Marilyn Warren, Mark Weinberg and Stephen Kaye on Friday 23 June increased Besim’s sentence to 14 years’ imprisonment with a non-parole period of 10 years and six months. According to a case summary from the court, Besim had planned to drive his car into a police officer performing duties at Anzac Day commemorations in 2015 and immediately thereafter behead him to advance ‘violent jihad’. In his sentencing Justice Croucher noted the “terrifying and evil” nature of the planned attack. But he added that Besim’s moral culpability was less than that of two others charged over the plot who planned to attack an army base in Sydney, and therefore warranted a lesser sentence. He also concluded that there was a ‘reasonable possibility’ that Besim might not have gone through with the attack. However on appeal, Chief Justice Warren and her colleagues said an offender’s culpability was not just to be measured by how close they came to committing an act “but also by appreciating the nature and extent of the act contemplated”. The judges said mitigation should have been limited given the seriousness of Besim’s plan, and that general deterrence and community protection “must be given substantial, if not primary, weight”. “As this was a case of grave criminality, factors such as rehabilitation and others of a personal nature, including youth, should be given substantially less weight than might be the case in other forms of offending,” they said.
“At 91, Mum no longer helps out on the farm, but she’s still got h er freedom.” Peter, son of Edna Freedom family
Until recently, Mum was still making meals for us shearing boys at the family farm. When she had a fall, I realised I couldn’t provide the care she needed and still run the farm, raise my family and work as a full time firie. My greatest fear was putting my fiercely-independent Mum in a nursing home. Thank heavens I discovered Freedom Aged Care. Today Mum enjoys the privacy of her own self-contained unit in a vibrant Freedom community. She’s making new friends, gets the nursing and personal care she needs - and wouldn’t you know it – she’s still making tucker for “us boys!”. We have a community right here in Berwick and many more across Australia, feel free to call us on 1800 984 840. What’s life without freedom?

Beaconsfield's Corner Post Café.
Cafe gets stamp of their approval The Corner Post Cafe is the perfect destination for a gourmet breakfast or lunch amid the vibrant beauty of Beaconsfield. Built in 1878, what’s now known as The Corner Post Cafe was originally the town’s post office. It operated as the post office until 2001 so much of the original building is still intact. Store owner Stewart Saw has created a cosy, homely cafe. “This cafe offers a different setting to sit with friends or family and enjoy a meal and coffee,” Stewart said.
“It has both indoor and outdoor seating and because it’s an old house, you can sit in different rooms instead of one noisy one.” With an in-house designed menu, The Corner Post’s chefs are renowned for taking great care in the preparation of each and every meal. With the cafe’s head chef having international experience under his belt, customers are bound to find a menu that not only excites them, but makes them feel good as well. “We offer table service dining of gourmet breakfast and
lunch and we also have a wide selection of cakes and house made scones and muffins to die for,” Stewart said. “We also have a very large array of beverages including great coffee and our tea is brewed in a tea pot with tea leaves and not tea bags!” Open from 9am to 4pm, The Corner Post Cafe is a licensed gourmet cafe located at 19-21 Woods Street, Beaconsfield, and can be found at facebook. com/thecornerpostcafebeaconsfield. Family pain By Cam Lucadou-Wells
Your pathway to a brighter future
Family violence is so common in family law disputes that its absence is now a “matter for comment”, according to a family law judge. “I can say with confidence that family violence is the core business,” Judge Judy Small told a gathering to celebrate a pilot program to house family violence services at Dandenong family law court registry. “It’s a matter for comment when there’s no family violence alleged.” Her observations showed the need for the federal program Family Advocacy and Support Services (FASS) - which allows victims and perpetrators to be literally walked from the court into the offices of social workers. The key goal is to keep families and children safe. The survivors of family violence - mainly women and children - are assisted in a complex knot of problems. Duty lawyers help with the legal issues, social workers assist with safety plans and finding alternative accommodation for victims.

Judge Small said FASS was a welcome initiative, to have social scientists and lawyers working together. There had been much progress, but family violence was still not widely understood, she said. There was the misguided notion that a man could be an abusive partner but a good dad, for example. Children who witness this abuse could suffer lifelong con-
sequences, Judge Small said. “The fact that it happens in the home is the real affront to me. “It happens in a place where we should feel safest on this earth, where we feel safest, supported and loved. “The betrayal of trust when family violence occurs ... it’s extremely difficult to rebuild.” FASS teams duty lawyers from Victoria Legal Aid and Peninsula Community Legal Centre with social workers from WAYSS and Relationships Australia. The pilot, which started on 1 May, runs for about two years.

are loathe to self-report. But Berwick College’s programs are tuning students into seeking help. Likewise, peers will report their peers, Ms Birkett says. The wellbeing program was a finalist at the 2016 Victorian Education Excellence Awards. “We would be absolutely lost without them,” Ms Birkett said. “They’re a unique group of people.”

No student will feel alone under a Berwick school’s extensive well-being arm. A team of social workers, a chaplain and a registered nurse aim for each of Berwick College’s 1600 students to connect to at least one ‘significant other’. The ConnectED program is a response to the dizzying rates of domestic violence, alcohol and drug abuse and the infamous suicide cluster in Casey. At the school, there has been a heavy collective grief over several staff and students who have died in recent years. Mental health and resilience are emerging as a priority area for schools, says acting assistant principal Alison Birkett. Statistically, about one in four people are subject to domestic violence. That equates to 400 students at the college who could be traumatised. Last year, the wellbeing team helped 400 students through personal issues. “Many of our young people live lives of stress,” Ms Birkett said.

NATURAL ADVANTAGES NATURE was key for first home buyers Rachana Malagi and Charan Shah when they decided to jump on the property ladder. So Berwick Waters, with its plentiful reserves, weaving wetlands and resident birdlife, was the perfect choice. The couple recently bought a block of land at the community and are working their way through the estate’s massive display village to select a home design and builder. “From the beginning, we were inclined towards buying at Berwick Waters,” Ms Malagi said. “The display village has so much variety. We are really impressed with it,
we have been there almost every weekend for - I can’t remember how long. We’ve got a lot next to a creek and a reserve which we are very happy with. The estate has a real exclusivity to it and is so close to Berwick.” The pair love to entertain and their housing priorities include a continuous living room and alfresco dining area and spacious master bedroom. Ms Malagi, 29, works in marketing in the city while her partner works in Mulgrave, but can see the value of working in the south-eastern suburbs. She said the employment opportunities were only growing with a rising number
of workers and employers recognising the appeal of satellite cities like Berwick as employment hubs. Located 50km south-east of Melbourne in Clyde North, Berwick Waters is a joint venture with Frasers Property Australia and Mondous Property Australia. It features more than 50 hectares of parks and open spaces for residents, with plans for 9km of shared bike paths and walking trails. Talents harnessed in safety The aim at Maranatha Christian School is for children to acquire essential knowledge and skills for learning, as well as to become an active, caring participant in Christian community and contemporary society. In the junior school, foundational patterns of learning are established and children develop ‘habits of the mind’ and organisational skills that enable them to experience success over their earliest years of school. The school’s program is delivered by passionate, capable teachers, in a stimulating environment. Teachers plan and collaborate to improve student outcomes and focus on nurturing individual excellence. Staff believe that real progress is ensuring all students grow academically. This year the school was recognised by ACARA as a leading school demonstrating substantially above average growth in NAPLAN. The school motto is “My Utmost For His Glory” which means that every child is chal-
lenged and encouraged to do their best, in all things at all times, reaching their full potential and discovering their God-given gifts in a safe and secure learning environment. Leadership opportunities in junior school are varied, providing wonderful opportunities to teach discipleship. Maranatha has a welfare team, made up of trained teachers, chaplains, counsellors and education support staff who positively feed into the lives of children. Students participate in a buddy program that provides extra support for our ELC and Prep students. Parents are invited to attend the junior school open morning on 4 August from 9.30am to noon at the school’s Doveton and Officer sites. Tour the school, and meet the principal, director of junior school and teachers. To register, contact Janet De Jong on 9709 7217 or go to www.maranatha.vic. edu.au

Thinking outside the box, by all reports Education
matters ROB KELLY
multimedia teacher at Berwick Lodge Primary School
As the second term of the school year draws to a close, many parents will soon be receiving an academic transcript of their child’s progress at school. If you are one of those parents about to read your child’s report with eager anticipation; I urge you to read on… A couple of weeks ago, I was rummaging through some cardboard boxes in the garage at home. I found the usual suspects inside - broken toys, old birthday cards and long forgotten memories. I was just about to throw the boxes in the skip when I found one of my old school reports. I decided to keep it - not so much for the sake of nostalgia, but for my future generations to read. Turning each page instantly transported me back in time. It was fun at first, but I was soon recalling memories of childhood anxiety attacks, sleepless nights and a world of adolescent worry! I think we can all remember receiving the occasional bad report card at school. Remembering the stress associated with completing relentless assessment tasks and failing the odd test isn’t a memory most of us want to resurrect. I’m sure we can all remember a sleepless night before an exam or receiving a report that was worse than expected. Then there was the fear of bringing a bad report home to the parents. It was the ultimate nerve-wracking experience. Although my work in class was above average, some teachers felt compelled to provide “improvement” feedback that consisted of ‘Could do better!’ or ‘Must try harder’. There was no accompanying elaboration about what it was that I could do better or in what field I could try harder.
It just made me feel like I was dumb. Today, that sort of feedback goes against every good teaching pedagogical approach out there, but for the time, it was perfectly acceptable. While much has been done in the past decade to ensure new teachers are providing good feedback to their students and differentiating their classroom curriculum, not much has changed in regards to assessment, exams, NAPLAN and achievement standards. There’s an argument to be made about assessment overload now! There seems to be more of it than ever before! Teach-
ers and students are buried under it! The problem stems from a systemic and outdated belief that relentless testing is the way forward in education. In reality, it gives politicians the chance to label children and provides multi-billion dollar industries with multi-billions of dollars! A young person’s ability to learn is so rapid, it’s hard to track the evolution of their learning accurately. It’s the equivalent to buying a new computer; the moment you leave the shop with it, there is a new one on display - with better software. Children are always learning, growing and
developing. In fact, their brains are the ultimate computer - downloading the latest software every day. So, if you are about to receive a report from your child’s school, full of assessment data and improvement feedback, remember that a good report will highlight your child’s achievements and provide productive and inspiring feedback. Remember that it can also be an anxious time for your child. Most importantly though, remember that in the end, it will inevitably end up in a cardboard box.

Don’t be a dummy with your deductions The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is warning taxpayers to avoid incorrect claims for work-related expenses at tax time this year. Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said the ATO is using realtime data to compare taxpayers with others in similar occupations and income brackets, to identify higher-thanexpected claims related to expenses including vehicle, travel, internet and mobile phone, and self-education. “It is important to know what you’re eligible to claim before lodging your tax return and to make sure you don’t claim more than you’re entitled to,” Ms Anderson said. “Many taxpayers don’t have a good understanding of what deductions they can claim, and believe they can claim for items which they in fact can’t. Some taxpayers even think that you can make a standard claim of $300 without having spent the money. You don’t need receipts for claims up to $300 but you must have actually spent the money, and be able to show us how you worked out your deduction if asked.” Ms Anderson said that deductions for work uniforms are also a common trap for employees at tax time. “It’s a myth that you can claim everyday clothes, for example, black pants and a plain white shirt, even if you only wear them to work, and your employer says you have to. To legitimately claim your uniform, it needs be unique and distinctive, such as a uniform with your employer’s logo, or be specific to your occupation and not for everyday use, like chef’s pants or coloured safety vests.” “It sounds like a small thing, but
Be careful with work related deducations warns the ATO. we aren’t talking about small sums of money here. There are 13 million taxpayers, so if everyone over claims even $100 that adds up to a lot.” Ms Anderson said the ATO’s focus is on helping taxpayers get it right in the first instance, but the ATO is also on the lookout for red flags to find people who are doing the wrong thing. “The ATO scrutinises every return. We have the technology and experi-
ence to detect non-compliance and we are continuing to catch taxpayers who are deliberately doing the wrong thing.” Ms Anderson says there are three golden rules for taxpayers to remember to get it right. “One - you have to have spent the money yourself and can’t have been reimbursed, two - the claim must be directly related to earning your income,

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST
Bold moves for marketing By Rebecca Skilton It’s been said that Albert Einstein defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results. And according to a Brisbane marketing expert, it’s this exact insanity that too many businesses apply to their strategic marketing plan. Marketing strategist, creative writer and inspiring conference speaker Damian Morgan encouraged local business owners to be bold, precise and informed at a business excellence seminar held by Star News Group on Thursday 22 July. He walked business owners through a marketing crash course covering the whos, the whats, the whens, the wheres and the whys of strategic marketing at the Cardinia Cultural Centre. And the overriding theme? Marketing isn’t optional when seeking business success. Using examples of brands such as Tradie underwear and Workwear, Adidas, Nike and Lorna Jane, he stressed the importance of brand positioning, strongly encouraging businesses to have a firm understanding of their target audience. He said that a good advertisement doesn’t appeal to everyone, but instead charms and hooks people that the products and services are aimed at. “A bad ad costs the same as a good ad but the difference is bad ads don’t work,” he said. “We think that advertising is telling people what we’re capable of which
Star News Group Advertising Sales Manager Mandy Clark with president of Akoonah Park Andy Fyfe and Akoonah Park secretary Gayle Joyse. can be our biggest mistake but great advertising actually appeals to people’s hearts as well as their minds. “Good ads don’t hook everyone, but they get far more than they would if they were watered down (to tailor for everyone).” He encouraged business owners to target specific marketing seasons such as tax time, Christmas, sports seasons and seasons of the year and to tailor their advertising to the current market - or risk losing potential customers. “At Christmas time, you’re competing with every present under the tree - if you don’t promote whatever

it is you’ve got that could be a gift at Christmas you’re losing sales to everyone that is,” he said. “You’ve got to make your product or service giftable. So many small businesses roll over and die in their off seasons but when you promote during the off season, you’re going to win where others won’t. “And when you don’t have seasons, make them up.” When it came to marketing and advertising platforms, he highlighted that the importance of local media outlets should never be overlooked and encouraged business owners to use their
local newspapers to tap into the market in which they exist. “If you want to know local news, politics and sports and about what’s happening in the local area, there isn’t many other sources than the local newspaper,” he said. “The people reading those papers they’re local. From a commercial point of view, that should be music to your ears. “Local newspapers should be the first cab off the rank, your base layer. “You need to saturate the market in which you sit. If you do that, you’re much more likely to get a return from
the people more likely to buy from you.” Within local advertisements he encouraged businesses to use content space wisely, emphasising that ads work best when focused on one ‘hook’ and are tailored to suit the changing needs of individual seasons. “You’re not going to fill the ad with the business’s whole story,” he said. “Use the content space to say one thing - one compelling reason why somebody should give you a go. “And try to scratch different itches once a month.”

Interstate horse transport is our specialty, and we do it well...but there are factors that you should consider before transporting a horse interstate or over extended distances. This information is focused towards long haul trips but is applicable to anyone preparing a horse for transport. for long periods (try not to trim/shoe etc right before transport). goes a long way to minimising stress on the horse. Our travellers will never spend excessive hours on the truck. Horses are very resilient animals but pushing their limits is not an option we entertain. Of course we have distance to cover, but a combination of skilled driving, modern vehicles and sufficient breaks

The ultimate showdown... Berwick's biggest test Page 53
Connecting people with the local sport they love.
Versatile young athlete By Russell Bennett Berwick’s Quinn Spencer would have to be considered one of the local area’s most remarkable and versatile young athletes. Not only is he making a real impact in both local and interleague level footy at Beaconsfield, the 14-year-old is also a prodigiously talented netballer who’s been earmarked as a player of the future in the M-League - the premier men’s netball competition in the state. Quinn has spent his entire footy journey to date at Beaconsfield, and two years ago he started playing netball there too. His first involvement in the sport came through school and he’s moved ahead in leaps and bounds in the years since. “I just found it to be a new challenge,” he said. “There’s football, and I’d learned that, but netball is something different - not many people at school play it.” The St Francis Xavier student recently returned from the Men’s Australian National Netball Championships on the Gold Coast where he represented the Victorian Men’s 17-and-under team. When he was selected in that side he was still only 13. He has continued to take massive strides forward on his sporting journey since, too. He finished in first place for overall champion in the Year 9 boys athletics at St Francis Xavier in Berwick and recently played for the South East Juniors’ (SEJ) under-14 football interleague team. At clubland he plays up an age group - playing in the

Quinn started playing netball in the midcourt - using his running ability and his endurance to great effect - and he’s also spent a significant amount of time as goal keeper. He said those who hadn’t played much netball before would be particularly surprised at just how physical it is.
He’d love to see more young male sportspeople get involved in netball. Quinn’s involvement isn’t on just the playing side either - he coaches his Year 9/10 school team, where the vast majority of players have come from basketball. He said he’s found his role as a player-coach to be “trickier than what

people perceive it as”, but also spoke on how it helped his game as a player. The biggest strengths of his game are his toughness, his physicality, his drive, and his ability to read the play. They’re all skills that serve him particularly well in his footy too. Quinn wants to keep playing both football and netball well into the future
and would love to see men’s, boys, and mixed sides play netball in local football netball competitions on weekends. “I think it’d be good because girls and guys netball is completely different and it’d be good to get both sides,” he said, adding that some people would be surprised to see the amount of people from both genders who’d put their hands up to play.
Just a few stats for the records By David Nagel It’s time to geek things up a bit and take a look at the half-way stats of the South East Football Netball League for 2017. Okay we’re a week late, but debates about night grand finals and divisional football clogged up our pages last week leaving no room for the facts and figures about football. And for the all the stats that coaches keep on a weekly basis - like inside 50s, pressure acts, clearances, handballs received and contested ball - the ones that really matter hang off a scoreboard each week. The scoreboard is where all the hard work comes together to define who wins, and who walks away with their tails wedged firmly between their legs. We can read stats in so many ways, and most coaches put a slant on them to suit themselves, but some stats standout after the first nine rounds of footy. First let’s look at who is creating the most opportunities. Surprisingly, considering the dominance of Berwick and Cranbourne this season, it’s Narre Warren who has conjured up the most shots on goal, with 241 attempts equating to 30 shots per game.
Berwick (28) is next best on the list with Cranbourne (26.13) and Beaconsfield (25.88) balanced equally around the 26 shots per game mark. Doveton (22.88) is being seriously pushed by Tooradin (22.63) in fifth place, while Officer (18.50), Pakenham (16.88) and Hampton Park (9) round out our first list. But who is turning those Alex Rances into sausage rolls? For those not up to date with rhyming slang - that’s chances into goals! Not surprisingly, considering the Eagles are coached by one of the great goal-kickers of all time, it’s Cranbourne that converts best, kicking 119.90 for a percentage strike rate of 56.94 percent.
Pakenham is clearly the worst at converting opportunities into goals, 58.77 for a woeful percentage of 42.96. Beaconsfield could also give its premiership aspirations a boost by working on its goal-kicking, Leigh McQuillen’s Eagles converting at just 47.34 percent from its 207 chances. And it’s okay to create scoring opportunities - but who is best at restricting the opposition from scoring? Cross-creek rivals Beaconsfield and Berwick share top billing. Beaconsfield has conceded the least amount of goals this season, 51, while the Wickers have restricted their opponents to the fewest opportunities, allowing just 106 attempts from their first eight outings.
SCORES FOR
Michael Riseley and co ... you’re taking the fun out of football - just kidding. Hampton Park cop it with both barrels when it comes to this department, conceding 45 shots per game with their opponents most accurate, kicking goals at a rate of 57.30 per cent. Surprisingly, Doveton (21.50), Narre Warren (20.88) and Tooradin (20.50) concede a very similar amount of shots to their opponents. If we haven’t confused you by now we never will, but for the real football nerd there are so many other stats that can be gleaned from the tables provided. Go the footy nerd - long live the footy nerd!

Stingrays’ goal blitz hits By Nick Creely TAC CUP (DEVELOPMENT ROUNDS) REVIEW - ROUND 11 An enthralling 13-goal second half has seen the Dandenong Stingrays register a commanding 76-point victory over Western Jets. With five youngsters making their debuts - Alex Young, Daniel Frampton, Jack McHale, Riley Boland and Will Barron - there was a breath of fresh air in the Stingrays’ line-up. After a slow start by both sides, Dylan Morris finally snared the opening major of the game, before debutant Alex Young kicked a goal on the stroke of quarter time to give the ‘Rays a 12-point quarter time lead. Another errant second term by the Stingrays meant that despite all their dominance, they were equal pegging with the Jets despite having six more scoring shots. With second halves being the Stingrays’ kryptonite throughout the year, a goal in the first minute of the third quarter by Finlay Bayne sparked a run of four goals in eight minutes, with the ‘Rays ending the quarter having kicked seven goals to nil. With the game put to bed, the ‘Rays then run amok in the final quarter, with Tom Freeman, Riley D’Arcy, Mitchell Riordan, Jai Taylor, Tom Bedford all kicking final term goals as the hapless Jets could only look on in misery. “Our second halves have been poor this year and it was great for the group to answer that challenge,” Coach Nick Cox said. “It was a windy day down at Williamstown as it usually tends to be, but
“Jack was a little bit off the pace early, but as the game wore on got a lot better - he’ll be better for the run,” he said. With a host of the leaders playing in the Under 18 championships, standin skipper Lachlan Young was brilliant once again, while Toby Bedford starred with two goals and showed immense class. “Toby was exceptional for us up forward - a clear best afield performance from him,” Cox said. “Lachlan was really good as our stand in skipper - he was honestly below par at the start of the year but his last month has been exceptional for us.” The Stingrays now have a 7-4 record and will tackle the Calder Cannons on 8 July at RAMS Arena.

Stand-in skipper Lachlan Young was outstanding for the 'Rays. 168489 we just fixed some things up structurally. “We eventually got our tails up in the third quarter and started playing some great footy.” With a bunch of newcomers and a host of kids playing in just their second and third games, Cox was buoyed by
the promise they showed. “We had five debutants - they all did well and got a taste of footy at this level which was great,” Cox said. One of the youngsters playing their first game for the Stingrays was 17-year-old Haileybury product Jack McHale.

Jay Kennedy-Harris was once again best afield, racking up 40 touches, Weideman ended with six majors in a display that would have excited fans and Ben Kennedy was once again tough in the clinches. For the Casey-listed players, Bailey Fritsch was a constant force, Mitch Cox kicked a nice goal at a crucial time and Jimmy Munro once again stuck to his task and came out on top. der in what was their fifth consecutive win - they travel to face Port Melbourne on Saturday.

VICTORIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 10 Casey is beginning to rise to a whole new level after claiming another giant scalp - this time the previously undefeated Box Hill on Saturday by 26-points. Down at Box Hill City Oval - the fortress of the Hawks AFL-listed forward Sam Weideman slammed home the first two and last two majors of the first quarter to guide the Dees to a handy 18-point quarter time buffer. Weideman once again got the Demons going with his fifth goal within the sixth minute of the second term, and despite the Hawks fighting back to kick three goals for the term, the Demons held the advantage and control of the game. After dictating terms for the first hour of the play, the intensity lifted from both sides after the main break, and it was Box Hill who got the run and momentum - kicking three of the first four goals of the third term - to slice the margin to under a goal. But after Bailey Fritsch (three goals) kicked a clever dribbler against the run of play, the Demons once again came roaring back to kick three consecutive goals to undo all the hard work of the Hawks’ forwards. And in an electrifying final quarter, the Demons would not relinquish their lead despite some heroics from Tyrone

Coach blasts team By Nick Creely VICTORIAN WOMENS FOOTBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 6 Cranbourne coach Sein Clearihan has blasted his team’s performance on Sunday, labelling it as “extremely disappointing”. The Eagles were belted by the Eastern Devils by 64-points at Casey Fields, undoing the hard work in getting its season back on track in the last month. Coming into the match as one of the in-form teams of the competition, the Eagles came out breathing fire, scoring the first two goals of the match. But from there the Eagles scored just six more points for the game, with the Devils flexing their muscles and making them look listless. “We put a lot of effort into it and came out in the first quarter and jumped out of the box - the girls then lost their way a little bit,” Clearihan said. “We were bees to honey - we seemed to be over-trying and when we did that we pushed too far back and that just kills you out the back door with the sweeper and the Eastern talls just dominated us.” Although the Eagles put a younger side on the park, Clearihan said it was no excuse for the performance. “I knew we’d be up against it I thought we’d be able to match it

Holly Whitford gets a kick away under extreme pressure on Sunday. 169835 Picture: ROB CAREW and I kept everything pretty simple and straightforward - we kicked the first two goals of the game and were only seven-points down at quarter time and I thought it put us in the box seat - the girls then put the cue in the rack when they kicked away in the third quarter,” he said. “I said to them after the game
that they’re playing the second highest level of women’s footy in Australia, and if you’re not tuned on or switched on this is what happens.” In a match that quickly went away from the Eagles, Clearihan said only a couple of his players could hold their heads high, and urged his team to quickly bounce back.
“Breann Moody did well and took it right up and so did young Sophie Phillips - to be honest, you could have thrown the rest up in the air - it was a pretty bad day for us,” he said. “It’s a learning curve and we’ll address that this week and get us up and about - we need to move on and get back on the horse.” The eighth-placed Eagles - who now have a 2-4 record - have an opportunity for redemption against the third placed VU Western Spurs this week.
Shiny medal haul by Casey Masters By Nick Creely The Casey Masters Athletics club remain one of the most dominant Victorian groups after a stunning 22 medals - including 16 gold medals - were won at the recent Australian Masters Athletics Championships in Darwin. The event - which was held from Friday 9 June to Monday 12 June was a raging success for Casey, who continues to excel all around the country in a range of tournaments. Paul Olsson simply dominated his four events with gold medals in Triple Jump, Hammer, Weight Pentathlon and Weight Throw in his M60-64 division, an extraordinary achievement. This was followed up by new-
Casey Masters, from left: Shaun Taylor, Mike Hall, Rhiannon Lester, Pramesh Prasad, Paul Olsson. Picture: SUPPLIED comer Rhiannon Lester - competing in her inaugural National Championships - who also won four golds in Triple Jump, 100 metre hurdles,
4/100 and 4/400 Relays in the W3539 division. Sprint star Shaun Taylor then stole the show and display his supe-
riority, winning gold in the 60/100 and 200 metres events for the M3034 division, National Racewalk champion Pramesh Prasad won golds in the 1500/5000 and 10000 walks in the M40-44 division and Rob Italia won gold in the 3000 Steeplechase, silver in the 800 metres and bronze in the 4/400 Relay. Mike Hall also won five medals in Pole Vault, 60 metre hurdles, High Jump, 200 and 4/100 Relays in the M50-54 division. Despite being the smallest venue in Victorian Masters Athletics Casey, the friendly group based at Casey Fields each Monday night at 7pm, encourages anyone interested in their general health and fitness to come along regardless of ability.
Mixed bag for Cavaliers on a tough away trip By Nick Creely BIG V BASKETBALL REVIEW ROUND 13 STATE CHAMPIONSHIP MEN Saturday night saw the Casey Cavaliers embark on the toughest away trip of them all - to face the ladder leaders Waverley Falcons in their own backyard. Despite battling hard, the Falcons out-muscled and out-worked the Cavs to win 87-76. Powerful duo Jason Reardon (22 points, 11 rebounds, four assists) and Desmond Simmons (25 points, 10 rebounds) really tore up the court and caused headaches for the Cavs. Mitch Chapman (20 points, four rebounds, four assists) was the lone hand for the Cavs. The very next day, the Cavs returned home to play Whittlesea, who are on the bottom of the table
with four wins. In a completely different style of match, the Cavs were far too strong - winning 98-81 - Raheem Lemons (26 points) was in fine touch for the home side. The Cavs are in fifth position with a 9-7 record, and face Diamond Valley and Werribee on the weekend. DIVISION ONE WOMEN The Division One Cavs’ side had the bye over the weekend, but remain second last on the table with a 4-10 record. They will play Werribee and Camberwell this weekend. YOUTH LEAGUE TWO MEN It was yet another successful weekend for the second placed Cavs, who knocked off Keysborough Cougars 91-77 on Sunday. The game, played at Casey Indoor, was always in control of the
Cavs, who did what they needed to do. The Cavs had plenty of winners all over the court, but Jordan Gooiker (24 points) was a standout and Brendon Head (14 points, 10 rebounds) contributed strongly for the home side. Attention now turns to Saturday night, with a top two clash between the Cavs and Pakenham Warriors, before they travel to Mornington on Sunday to play the Breakers. YOUTH LEAGUE TWO WOMEN The fourth placed Cavs also had the opportunity to freshen up over the weekend with a bye. As one of the inform teams in the competition, there will be a lot of expectation on the Cavs to continue on their winning ways. They face Blackburn Vikings on Saturday night before hosting Mornington on Sunday afternoon.

Comets crash down the table By Nick Creely FFV STATE LEAGUES - ROUND 13 STATE LEAGUE 1 - SOUTH EAST The Casey Comets have slumped all the way to ninth on the table after a disappointing 0-2 loss to Malvern City FC at Kooyong Park on Saturday. Coming into the game in hot form and against a side lower on the ladder, the Comets were jumped early when City scored the opening goal to take a 1-0 lead into half time. And although the Comets should have been too strong, City scored once more in the dying moments to claim one of the round’s biggest surprises. After being seventh coming into the round, the loss is fairly costly for the Comets. In other matches, Mornington SC defeated St Kilda 3-0, FC Clifton Hill toppled Warragul United 1-0, Morwell Pegasus went down 3-4 to Langwarrin in an entertaining clash, Caulfield United were too strong for Manningham United 3-1 and South Springvale drew 1-1 with Mooroolbark. STATE LEAGUE 2 - SOUTH EAST Berwick City made it four wins in a row when they accounted for Peninsula Strikers in a 2-1 home win. Berwick once again fell behind in the 16th minute but goals to Orlando Mejias and Bryce Ziada sealed another victory to City who now move up to third on the ladder. “They hit us hard today and it was a scrappy game, but the boys kept their composure to dominate the second half and deserved the win,” Coach Gerry McDonagh said after the game. Berwick’s next assignment is a tough away game against Frankston Pines on Saturday afternoon. Doveton have also registered yet another solid victory, this time against Doncaster Rovers 2-1 on Friday night. After the Rovers scored the only goal of the opening half, the Doves ran over the top in a dominant second half with goals to Rinor Muriqi and Naseer Mohammed. The Doves sit in second place and continue to breathe down the necks of ladder leaders Eltham Redbacks. STATE LEAGUE 5 - SOUTH In arguably the most important match in a tight State League 5 season, Pakenham United fell to the Casey Panthers 0-1 on Saturday. With both sides occupying sixth and seventh spot on the table, United couldn’t score in the second half after Daniel Nelson struck in the first half for the Panthers. Bunyip put in a competitive showing against Lyndale United, losing 0-1 but showing some greater intent. In other matches, Somerville defeated Drouin 1-0, Dandenong Warriors powered through to a 5-1 victory, Rowville beat White Star Dandenong 1-0 and Old Mentonians inflicted Sandown with its first loss of 2017, winning 1-0.

Epic battle: giants poised By David Nagel The two heavyweights of the South East Football Netball League will collide when Cranbourne and Berwick lock horns in a round 11 blockbuster at Casey Fields on Saturday. Grand finalists of the last two years, the Eagles and Wickers have been at each other’s throats since the Wickers bolstered their stocks at the conclusion of 2014. The recruitment of players like Ash Smith, Ben Kearns, Michael Johnson and Michael Riseley elevated the Wickers above Beaconsfield and Narre Warren to be the main challengers to Cranbourne’s title as the best team in the competition. The Wickers claimed the 2015 premiership over the Eagles before Simon Goosey’s men turned the tables in a classic decider last year. The Eagles lead the Wickers 6-3 since the start of 2015, but one premiership each is the stat that defines their recent battles. The Wickers are staring an unbeaten season in the face if they can get over the Eagles on their own deck this weekend. “One of the things we’re most proud of this season is our away record,” Ber-
wick coach Stewart Kemperman said. “We’ve beaten Beaconsfield, Narre Warren and Doveton at their home grounds, so taking on Cranbourne at Cranbourne is sort of like our final frontier when it comes to the top teams in the competition. They’ll be much better than the last time we played them, but we’re looking forward to the challenge.” That round two engagement gave us the first real indication of just how good the Wickers could be. They blanketed the Eagles, suffocated them to the point where they could manage just three goals in a desperate three quarters of footy. A storm rolled in, finishing the game at three-quarter time, the Eagles 47 points adrift. “We don’t dwell on that performance too much,” Cranbourne coach Simon Goosey said. “Yes they were too good for us on the day, there were no excuses, but it was a weird day, one side had the wind for three quarters. “We’re obviously looking forward to the challenge; we’re in a good spot at the moment and we think we can turn that performance around. We played into their hands that day, our pressure and work rate
was down and we know what we need to do to turn things around.” Kearns has since moved on, but Smith, Johnson and Riseley are big-game performers who will have a big say in the outcome. But it’s the Eagles -on the back of a big game from midfielder Shaun Marusic - to strike back with a thrilling two-point win. Round 10 saw teams inside the top five confirm their significant advantage over the remainder of the competition. Cranbourne defender Brandon Osborne kept Tooradin’s Setanta O’hAilpin goal-less in the Eagles’ 28-point victory at Westernport Oval, while Doveton veteran Ryan Hendy kicked five goals in the Doves’ 65-point win over a disappointing Officer. And Berwick’s Trent Thomas and Brody Connelly ran rampant in the Wickers’ 253-point thrashing of Hampton Park at Edwin Flack Reserve. Thomas kicked 11, and Connelly nine, while Ash Smith snagged five of his own in the most comprehensive victory of the season. One thing’s for certain - it won’t be so easy for the Wickers this weekend!

Eagles have landed, with scalps in claws By David Nagel Cranbourne has claimed its first legitimate scalp of the season and thrown the race for this year’s premiership wide open with a stunning 41-38 victory over the previously unbeaten Tooradin at Casey Fields on Saturday. The Eagles four wins had come against the bottom-four teams in the competition, but a recent narrow loss to reigning champions Narre Warren gave Donna Wilson and her girls a truck-load of belief heading in. “I don’t have words for it, I’m unbelievably proud,” Wilson said. “I’m not the type of person to shed a tear, but I did do a happy dance. I could tell in the first two minutes that we had a great chance of winning, the girls were really switched on, and it was just an awesome game of netball.” The Eagles were magnificent all over the court. Dynamite defenders Sharni Lambden (goal defence) and Tara Cecil (goal keeper) were both at their brilliant best, having a great duel with Seagulls’ goalers Alex Duff, Jess Cox and Alex Maher. Mel Perrins (centre), Darcy O’Donnell (wing defence) and Nat Sparks (wing attack) had the better of the midcourt battles, while Tegan Stahl (goal attack) and Alanah Hardy (goal shooter) stayed cool and composed against the tough defence of Ebony Dolan and Bec Kinna. Tooradin has a week off now for the bye while the Eagles will look to back up their impressive victory with another strong performance against an improving Berwick - who gave up a big lead to draw 43-43 with a fast-finishing Hampton Park at Edwin Flack Reserve. The Wickers looked all over winners for three quarters, building a five-goal lead at quarter time to seven at the half-way mark and building even further to nine at the final break. The Redbacks - 26-35 - down, would need a miracle to keep their season alive. And they almost pulled it off, playing their best netball for the sea-

Megan Egbers (GS) was dynamic with 13 goals in the final quarter while Maddi Hanlen (C) really lifted in the middle. The Wickers are very much improved and the form of players like Renee Gill, Emily Pratt and Sarah Nash suggests there’ll be plenty of more wins on the way. Doveton bounced back to the winners list with a 59-41 victory over ROC at Starling Road. The Doves welcomed back some key players for the engagement and were right on top from the start, scoring 16-8 in the opening term.
Hayley Stewart (C), Chelsea Imanisani (WA) and Akanisi Seeto (WD) gave the Doves plenty of drive in the first quarter, providing gun-goaler Rahni Samason (GS) with a stack of opportunity to hit the scoreboard hard. Shae Gee (GA) was also impressive for the Doves, while Laura Quinn, Mel Overdyk, Sam Neil and Courtney Linhart were solid for four quarters for the Roos. And Beaconsfield banked its seventh-consecutive victory with a 57-32 triumph over Pakenham at Holm Park Reserve. The Eagles started fast and con-
solidated their nine-goal quartertime lead at half time before piling on the pressure with a 20-10 third term. The class of Rylee Nelson (C), Jasmine Jones (WA), Ash Gill (WD) and Kate Murphy (WD) proved hard for the Lions to stop, while the combined finishing skills of Emily Boribon (GA), Tanya Mijovic (GS) and Bianca Sanzaro (GS) blew the score out in the second half. Despite their slow start, the Lions stuck to their guns all day with Kate McGowan (GK), Keely Wright (GD), Renae Joiner (WD) and Carly Saunders (GA) the standouts. Narre Warren had the bye.

Sedan takes to the stars Holden has added a four-door Astra sedan variant to join the Astra hatch that was launched in December 2016. A station wagon will be added to the range later this year. This car market segment is extremely price sensitive in Australia to the extent that prices of the Astra hatch had to be reduced within months of it going on sale. Even $1500 can make all the difference and hatch sales are noticeably higher now than in the early days. GM-Holden has learned its lesson and Astra sedan prices start at $20,490 and run through to $29,790. On-road costs have to be factored in, however some pretty good driveaway deals are being offered during the initial weeks, possibly months, to get the Astra established. Styling of the new Astra sedan is neat and tidy, but doesn’t really break any new ground. This is a smart move as cars in this class tend to be purchased by sensible buyers who don’t want something that may look out of date in a few years, and depreciate savagely as a result. Holden Astra is built on an all-new vehicle modular architecture that features up to 120kg weight reduction from the model it supersedes. This adds performance at the same
Styling of the new Astra sedan is neat and tidy. time as fuel consumption decreases. The cars we tested certainly felt spritely. Infotainment is centred around a colour touchscreen that’s neatly integrated into the stylish dashboard. It uses the latest Holden MyLink system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There’s USB input with iPod connectivity. A clever design feature is the thumb rest to steady your hand while reaching the screen with your forefinger. On the safety front, all models have six airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), automatic headlights, a rear view camera and rear park assist.
Driveaway prices LS: $21,990 (manual), $23,990 (automatic) LS+: $24,900 (automatic) LT: $27,900 (automatic) LTZ: $29,790 (automatic)
Even the basic Holden Astra LS is pretty well equipped. It rides on 16inch alloy wheels. It has a 7.0-inch colour touchscreen, steering wheel mounted controls, a six speaker audio system, cruise control. The Astra LS+ adds a leather appointed steering wheel, automatic high beam assist, LED Daytime Running Lights (DRLs), Holden Eye forward
facing camera, Lane Keep Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Forward Distance Indicator, Forward Collision Alert (FCA). Next comes the Astra LT. Over the LS+ it has 17-inch alloy wheels, a rear lip spoiler, an 8.0-inch touchscreen and DAB+ radio. It also has heated door mirrors, front park assist, Side Blind Spot Alert, Passive Entry & Push-button Start, Advanced Park Assist, and automatic windscreen wipers. Finally, there’s the king of the hill Astra LTZ. It rides on 18-inch alloy wheels and has climate controlled air conditioning, an electric sunroof, chromed exterior window surrounds as well as chromed interior highlights combined with piano black. The front seats are heated. The only engine offered in Holden Astra sedan is a 1.4-litre turbo-petrol producing 110 kW of power. Oddly, maximum torque is 245 Nm with a six-speed manual, but 240 Nm with a six-speed automatic transmission. Seems that by GM’s internal standards that auto can’t handle that extra five Nm. The Astra LS is the only model offered with a manual gearbox. The more powerful 1.6-litre turbopetrol engine (147 kW / 280 Nm) that’s featured in the Astra hatch isn’t an option in the sedan.
On-centre steering feel has been softened a little to make it less sensitive in the straight ahead position which makes it suited to our rougher than average roads. Once you turn the wheel the feel comes in early and is nicely direct. There’s seldom any need to correct it mid corner unless you hit rougher than average bumps and dips. Comfort wise, the suspension is generally proved supple. However, the stylish low-profile tyres on the upmarket Astra models had a ride that wasn’t as good as on the lower grades. There was some road roar on coarse-chip surfaces from the lowprofile tyres. To its credit Holden took us over some pretty harsh surfaces during the launch program out of Coolangatta airport and in the hinterland of Queensland and Northern NSW. The 1.4-litre turbo engine is a lively little unit that’s a real pleasure to sit behind. There’s the inevitable turbo lag, but once that has passed, which doesn’t take long, there plenty of torque to provide good hill climbing and to prompt overtaking. Here’s a big feature, don’t take our word for it. Holden has a Take Your Time Test Drive scheme that lets you borrow a car for up to 24 hours.
