A gifted young musician in this week’s paper is fighting an uphill battle to raise the money for the chance of a lifetime to secure a career as a clarinetist. Having gained a much sought-after position in London from his audition shows he has exceptional skill. He is working flat out performing and teaching to raise the money, about $40,000. But he is running out of time, with only weeks to accept the position. Sacha Gibbs-McPhee would have been able to earn more money but when his mother became ill and needed surgery he gave up his time to take over her music classes. Sacha is an inspiration and deserves a helping hand. Someone else inspiring this week is Garry Maher. He took up a new sport, karate, at 64 years of age, when many people are taking life easier. But he didn’t just go along for a bit of exercise. He just won a silver medal in a worldwide competition and is teaching people over 50 not only the art of karate, but that they too can begin something new. ●

FROGS ADVERSELY IMPACTED BY BUSHFIRES

FROM JUNK TO ART

Bushfires should be added to the list of long-term threats facing Australia’s frog species, according to a USC researcher involved in a seven-year study of the frogs’ ecological and genetic diversity. University of Sunshine Coast lecturer in animal ecology Dr Dominque Potvin and Museums Victoria’s senior curator in herpetology Jane Melville investigated how severe bushfire events impacted the long-term survival of frog species, and found that frogs were not as resilient as previously believed. The research, published in the Journal of Applied Ecology, focused on the Kinglake region of Victoria, which was devastated in early 2009 by the ‘Black Sunday’ bushfires. “For two years leading up to Black Sunday, we were doing research into the ecological and genetic diversity of two common species - the brown tree frog and the Victorian tree frog - which were abundant in the tall forests of the area,” Dr Potvin said. “We continued for another five years after the fires and assumed the frogs would survive and recover, based on previous findings using traditional ecological survey techniques. “Genetic fingerprinting techniques, however, produced a very different story on their resilience, and painted a gloomy future for our already dwindling frog species.” They found that both species were significantly more inbred after the fires, and there were dramatic

Noosa Council is calling on all young artists to get creative with re-used and recycled materials and enter the Youth ArtCycle competition. Original works of art, sculpture, assemblage and jewellery or functional fashion accessories are eligible. The Youth ArtCycle competition, inspired by council’s Towards Zero Waste initiative, is open to school-aged students living in Noosa Shire. Part of the 2017 Floating Land Festival program, the competition includes three age categories - 6-9 years; 1013 years and 14-17 years. First prize in each category is an iPad Mini, with second prize of $200 cash, and a $50 cash third prize. Noosa Council project officer Emma Menzies said the completion carried a serious message about the importance of reducing, re-using, recycling, and even repurposing items to conserve resources for future generations. Noosa Regional Gallery exhibitions officer Nicole Maggs said a judging panel would select up to 30 finalists, with the winner to be announced on September 16. The finalists’ pieces will be included in an exhibition at the gallery from September 8 to October 15. There will also be a people’s choice competition. Entries close 5pm 6 August. To enter send a photograph of the entry to gallery@ noosa.qld.gov.au along with the entry form available either from the gallery or the website at www. noosaregionalgallery.com.au/youth-art-cycle. ●

CAN’T KEEP A

GOOD MAN

DOWN BY MARGARET MACCOLL

T

en years after breaking his neck in a dirtbike accident Casey Cherry, 30, is feeling freedom and tearing up the track again with a few adjustments to the average buggy. A team of six carers and some modified vehicles mean Casey, a quadriplegic, who moved from Pakenham, Victoria, for warmer weather, can live as independently as possible. And while he and his family are constantly on the lookout for new treatments or drugs that could improve his movement, he now counts himself lucky to be alive. “I’m not expecting to ever walk again but if I could get my hands working that would make a massive difference,” he said. Casey was 20 years old and helping out on his friend Mick Anderson’s sheep property, Cymbic Vale in Broken Hill when the bike he was riding hit wet ground and stopped, sending him over the handlebars. “I had a lot worse crashes than that. I didn’t have a scratch on my body. I knocked myself out for a couple of minutes. When I came to I thought something’s not right. I couldn’t feel anything.” Mick rode on to get help. The pair had been on the way to meet Casey’s father Ian, who was fixing fences. Casey lay in a dry creekbed for hours while the Royal Flying Doctor Service made its way to the remote property in a mammoth effort to get him to Adelaide Hospital for surgery. “A heap of farmers came to help,” he said. The fire brigade travelled 50-60km to get to him. They had to cut down fences to get through. “The Royal Flying Doctor had to land at a neighbouring property which had a long enough landing strip and travel cross-country by 4WD.

The accident happened about 10am. It was over 12 hours before Casey got to surgery. “I was a bit oblivious to it,” he said. “I knew I’d broken my neck. I didn’t think it’d be a permanent injury, I thought I’d be back up the next day. “When I got to hospital the doctor said you’ll never walk again. “I used to play football, basketball, cricket, go snowboarding and surfing. From that, going to do nothing was a bit crap.”

‘I’M LUCKY TO BE ALIVE… THERE ARE PEOPLE A LOT WORSE OFF THAN ME.’ Casey had broken his C3, 4, 5 and 6 vertebrae. He had surgery to fix his broken vertebrae with plates, screws and fusing but his spinal cord couldn’t be repaired. He has no movement from his chest down, nor in his fingers, but some in his arms. Casey spent 11 months in rehabilitation, then went home to live with his parents.

“It was tough in the beginning. I was crying every day,” he said. “In rehab they teach you about your body and how it functions, how to teach carers what to do. “I just realised that’s how it is. “I still have my moments. Small things might set me off but then I think of my friends and family. I’m lucky to be alive. There are people a lot worse off than me. I can talk normally. I don’t have a brain injury.” The Pakenham Gazette, a sister newspaper to Noosa Today, followed Casey’s story and covered a fund-raiser, organised by friends and family, for the Flying Doctor Service, raising more than $11,000. After six years struggling through Melbourne winters Casey decided to move to Noosa. His injury means he can no longer regulate his body temperature, so during the colder months he mostly stayed inside near a heater. Casey had been to Noosa for family holidays before and since his accident, and it was where his uncle was living. “I wanted a fresh start,” he said. “I was going to move eventually. I’m 30 years old. There are opportunities to get out more here. Everything is more accessible for a wheelchair.”

‘MY MATES TREAT ME NORMALLY … THAT’S WHAT I WANT…’ Accident insurance payments enabled Casey to buy a house and fund his ongoing expenses, including carers. He said moving away from family and friends was difficult at first, but he soon found they visited him regularly to holiday and he gets to spend even more time with them now. “My mates treat me normally. That’s what I want,” he said.

Since moving to Noosa Casey has worked with a company called Automobility to customise his van and to create an off-road buggy he can operate himself. Casey bought a normal van which was modified by Automobility. They lowered the floor to provide head clearance and installed a ramp at the rear which enables him to wheel his chair into the van and lock in a docking station while a carer drives. “I try and get out of the house. I go for a wheel up to the National Park and I like fishing in the river occasionally,” he said. A 4WD electric wheelchair has given him more access, particularly to the beach. “It’s got big chunky wheels and goes anywhere. I get some strange looks and people ask me about it.” But Casey’s greatest freedom comes from an off-road buggy. The steering wheel and foot pedals have been replaced with two controls he can operate himself. “I was right into motorbikes,” he said. “With the buggy I can go back to my friend’s farm at Broken Hill and some of the family meet me up there,” he said. “It’s just like the old days.” “Since moving to Noosa it’s the happiest I’ve been.” ●

NEWS COMPOSTABLE DOG WASTE BAGS SOLUTION

PLASTIC NOT FANTASTIC A campaign to make Noosa plastic-free was launched on Sunday at the Noosa Festival of Water by environment group, the Boomerang Alliance. Spokesman Toby Hutcheon said the alliance, a consortium of 47 environmental groups nationwide, chose Noosa as the pilot area for Queensland to trial plastic-free living. The pilot comes ahead of the Queensland Government bringing in proposed legislation to ban single-use plastic bags and introduce a refund scheme for plastic bottles. “People are putting eight million tons of plastic in the ocean every year. If it goes on for the next 30 years, by 2050 there will be more plastic in the oceans than fish,” he said. “Ninety-five per cent of plastic is used once and thrown away. “In this country we use three million tons of plastic a year. “We need to stop.” Toby said a step-by-step approach could change the situation and he urged the council, businesses and schools to support the campaign. He wants people to stop using plastic bags, plastic straws, water bottles, take away coffee

Council draft 2017/'18 Budget includes an initiative to switch to compostable dog waste bags later this year. Councillor Joe Jurisevic said the new bags were made from corn starch and would decompose in the environment. The bags currently in use simply break into smaller pieces of plastic, which remains in the environment. Council provides more than a million dog bags to the public annually. ●

COAST GUARD NOOSA RECEIVES FUNDING Keen to continue supporting their work on and off the water, manager of the Tewantin Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank, Wayne Hoens, presented a cheque for $4000 to Coast Guard Noosa to assist with expenses such as life jackets. Commodore Alan Hall said in an average year Coast Guard Noosa attended to 35 vessels that capsize on the Noosa Bar. That’s around 80 people in the water. “So far there have luckily been no fatalities,” he said. ●

NEWS STATE INJECTS $2 MILLION INTO NATIONAL PARK

IT'S NOOSA ALL OVER A campaign combining cinema, television and YouTube commercials, mobile posters on Melbourne trams and Sydney buses and a high profile static poster in Melbourne’s Federation Square is sure to catch the attention of potential tourists. Tourism Noosa’s largest campaign to date, their new interstate winter campaign was launched in Sydney and Melbourne this week after a preview at The J to more than 100 members and tourism partners. Tourism Noosa CEO Damien Massingham said the winter campaign targeted high-yielding interstate visitors and was based on consumer research conducted in these markets. “Our interstate visitor markets of Sydney and Melbourne are key for Noosa, spending more and staying longer than other visitors. We know that they love Noosa for its warm weather, great beaches and quality food experiences but we wanted to remind them that there is so much to see and do here. The campaign, which will also include targeted social media activity, is selling Noosa as ‘The Relaxation Capital of Australia’. Cummins and Partners whose memorable advertisements include Jeep, Specsavers, AFL and Fox Sports worked with Tourism Noosa to develop the campaign. This week a team from Tourism Noosa including Noosa ambassador Matt Sinclair of Masterchef fame has travelled to Federation Square in Melbourne to entice southerners to take a relaxing break in Noosa.

Noosa National Park will receive a $2 million funding boost from the 2017-'18 State Budget for further work on the tracks and lookouts and completion of the revamp of the main picnic area. The funding is additional to a joint State-Commonwealth $800,000 upgrade of the coastal walking track as far as Hell’s Gates, which includes a new viewing area with seating at the Dolphin Point lookout, and works at the picnic area at the Park’s main entrance that is nearing completion. Minister for National Parks Steven Miles made the announcement last week at the National Park, saying Noosa National Park is a major economic driver and tourism drawcard for the Sunshine Coast. “It also has the honour of being the second most-visited park in Queensland and has recorded more than 1.4 million visits,” he said. ●

WETLAND REHABILITATION FUNDED Noosa Bushland Beach and Creek Care received $22,800 for stage one of the rehabilitation of what the group calls the ‘Cooloosa wetland’ which is situated between Cooloosa Street and Heathland Drive. The group’s Jill Campbell said the first stage will concentrate on removing Ipomoea alba or white morning glory, which is smothering native trees and shrubs. This grant will allow work to begin on what will be at least a four stage project to fully rehabilitate this highly visible area. ●

GRANT HELPS REMOVE SINGAPORE DAISY The Heritage Park Bushland Care group obtained a State Government grant of $19,454 to continue removing Singapore daisy in the park, in an area to the east of the entrance at Billabong Way. The group’s

Joan Heavey said the grant would allow work to follow on from a recently completed, very successful SUEZ grant which facilitated the removal of Singapore daisy from a large area of creek bank and surrounding

NEWS Sacha Gibbs-McPhee has two months to raise 25,000 pounds (about $42,000) or risk losing out on lifelong dream to study at London’s Royal Academy of Music. The gifted Peregian Beach clarinettist flew to London in December to audition and won one of only a handful of places in the coveted Academy’s master’s orchestral music program. Sacha is working hard performing in concerts and taking music classes to raise the money. The son of well-known local piano teacher Tara McPhee earlier this year stepped in and took over her lessons while she underwent surgery for breast cancer. “He is such a gifted musician,” Tara said. “He has a knack for teaching and did a wonderful job of looking after my students while I was ill. I would love to see him achieve his dream.” Sacha has only eight weeks to take up his offer at the academy beginning in September, or lose it but he remains positive. “I am so excited about studying in London,” he said. “This field of the arts is very competitive, but I am confident and very determined.” A recent graduate of the University of Queensland, Sacha has performed in the Queensland Symphony Orchestra’s

The 25 entrepreneur students from PNG with guest speakers Aimee Sherriff and Wendy Wilson at Padstows in Noosa Junction.

BUSINESS ROPES AND NETWORKING

What makes a successful business? You.

Twenty-five entrepreneurial students from different provinces in Papua New Guinea were in Noosa last week to learn all about business, but their visit has left Noosa business owners in awe. The group of 24 women and one man were game changers in a vast array of industries from agri-business to retail gas supply, fashion to hospitality, floral artistry to coffin manufacturing, international shipping and cocoa exporting and everything in between. The 25 business owners and entrepreneurs, mostly parents, discussed the cultural differences between starting a business in PNG and Australia and shared their experiences in fighting against gender stereotypes and cultural restraints to achieve success in their chosen fields. The students are currently studying a six-week course in business at the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) sponsored by the Australian Awards PNG Fellowship and attended a seminar and networking lunch as part of their studies. Held at The J on Thursday 22 June, the students heard from Powerhouse Collective founder Aimee Sherriff and Life Beyond 30 founder Wendy Wilson before sharing lunch with local female business owners at Padstows in Noosa Junction. As founder of a business hub for

working parents, Aimee said she was asked to speak about starting a business with the purpose of solving a social problem; a similar situation to many of the students’ current businesses or business ideas. “What a blessed experience. These women felt inspired from our talks but it was they who were the inspiring ones. It was a privileged opportunity to meet with these women,” she said. “Afterwards, we all had lunch together, and I was able to hear all about their businesses and how it was for them as women in business in PNG. It’s shown me that through the power of social media we can support and connect with women abroad in our neighbouring countries. I’ve made some amazing friends from this networking.” Wendy said she was also inspired by the women and their stories, urging them to form social and business support groups like LB30 when they return home. “To be asked to host these amazing women for the afternoon was an awesome opportunity, and we all got something out of the day,” she said. “I can’t wait to do it again.” Wendy and Aimee said they both planned to stay connected to the students through social media to create a support network for their businesses. ●

Tewantin Noosa RSL CEO Phil Stephenson said the club had tried to offer something that appealed to kids up to 12 years of age to ensure visitors and their families had a great time when at the RSL. A performance by magician Andino, face painting and other activities will mark the grand opening of the Junior

Barracks on Saturday 1 July. Visitors will be able to see the room’s main attraction, the interactive floor game, or try out the many toys, iPads and books available for the children. “I want the club to become a place where a younger clientele can come and join our valued members in enjoying our 270-seat bistro, our all-too-tasty on-site baked cakes, pasties and pies served in our coffee shop,“ Phil said. Naming competition winner Caitlin Mullin will cut the ribbon to open the Junior Barracks at 11am. ● noosatoday.com.au

NEWS RED DOG FINDS NEW HOME

12356139-FA26-17

Bob and Sherril Lewis hadn’t expected to pick up a traveller on their journey to the Gulf Country - but they found their own Red Dog in Sturt’s Stony Desert and he now calls Noosa Springs home. The kelpie they call Red was left in the desert with two bones, no water and no identification tag. Bob said the couple left their Noosa Springs home on a 10-week drive to Cape Leveque and back via Alice Springs. Flooded roads south of Birdsville forced them to detour north across the Stony Desert. “We had been driving slow, stopping to take photos of the scenery as we could see 360 degrees to the horizon across flat, barren, treeless plains,” he said. “Pulling in to a rest area off the track we saw what initially we thought was a dingo, until it started running to the car. “We had left our campsite early and hadn’t seen another vehicle all day, so we were not sure how long he had been there. “The only other road in the area was Happy family: Bob and Sherril Lewis with Riley and Red. closed due to flooding.” Knowing he would perish or be taken Bob reckons the family must attract and seemed very happy to have been by dingoes, the couple made room for rescued.” kelpies, as Red is the second one to him and asked around for an owner at the A vet visit found there was no microchip adopt them. nearest town. so after a health check, vaccinations and “The first one was 23 years ago,” he “Speaking to the locals it became de-sexing he has become a much-loved said. obvious that people abandoning their dogs member of the family and a friend to the “He turned up at our house in a at rest stops and caravan parks was a couple's other dog, a briard named Riley. thunderstorm. ART FROM THE HEART C&K Tewantin Community Childcare has been recognised for its unique art program which earlier this year culminated in a public show at The J Gallery in Noosa. The centre received the Excellence and Innovation in the Arts Award this month at the 2017 C&K Excellence and Innovation Awards in Brisbane. Centre director Michelle Miller said many of the staff had been working at the centre for more than a decade and had built up the arts program over that time. “This centre is like one big family and within that family there is a lot of creativity - from the visual arts, to dance to music to working with the children on incorporating sustainability into arts practice,” she said. “The children love it and we were honoured that the work we have been doing with our artist-in-residence Bar Graham, ended up on the walls of The J Gallery in Noosa.” ●

GENEROSITY HAS NO BOUNDS BY MARGARET MACCOLL David and Courtney Rivers are chilling out temporarily at the RACV and looking for rental accommodation while they wait for a replacement for their Eerwah Vale house that burnt to the ground on Sunday 18 June. Buoyed by the generosity of the community, the family is recovering from their loss and moving on. “The community has been spectacular,” Dave said. Offers of clothing and household goods have poured in to them. “The day after the fire a neighbour we’d never met before gave us beds and duvets,” he said. “There is absolute joy and happiness in our world.” Dave said their insurance company, NRMA, had been so helpful he “couldn’t sing their praises enough”. The rubble of their former home was expected to be removed over the next two weeks and a replacement fourbedroom Queenslander built onsite. “They have to build like for like,” he said. The former house had been moved to the property from Maroochydore in the 1990s, and the family had been restoring it. He said they would miss its charm. “It had the original timber ceilings and VJ boards and everyone said it had so much potential,” he said. “Hopefully, we can regenerate some of that with the new home.” He said they planned to host an open house in the new home to thank everyone for helping them.

Courtney and Dave Rivers with their sons Maxwell and Fin. Dave said the insurance covered six months accommodation and the new home was scheduled for completion in four months. Their two sons have quickly come to terms with the loss. Dave said their two-year-old didn’t really understand what was going on but their five-year-old son realised on a visit to the burnt out shell that his

toys had all been lost. “After a few minutes he said to me you’ll have to buy me new toys, and a big smile came across his face,” Dave said. Their dog has found a temporary home with Dave’s sister and their two cats are staying in a cottage on the property. “We go back every night and feed them and give them a pat and

COUNCIL BUDGET OFFICIAL TODAY

BY JACQUELINE BAZZO

Residents look set to face a two per cent general rate rise and a 50 per cent sustainable transport levy when the Noosa Council officially brings down its budget today. Other charges include a 14.5 per cent increase in waste removal costs for those with the new garden waste recycling service. Council will also outline its 20 outlook through its Noosa Vision 2037 and Corporate Plan 20172037. Its 20-year goals focus on five areas: environment, community, economy, long-term planning for Noosa Shire and excellence as a council. Noosa Council 2017/’18 Budget is due to be ratified at at special meeting at 10am at council chambers in Tewantin on 29 June. ●

The town of Cooran will be transformed this weekend into an art space as 70 local artists set up displays from one end of King Street to the other. The annual Tall Trees Exhibition has a record number of participating artists, making it a must-see event on the art calendar and fulfilling its aim to promote and unite local artists to share their work. For the first time, this year’s exhibition over the 1-2 July weekend will take place at multiple venues in Cooran in a collaboration between local businesses and the community. Patrons will be able to meander along and view the work of local artisans in a variety of settings. Venues vary from The Vintage Junction, an eclectic coffee shop stocking vintage wares, to a new restaurant and bar aptly named Hinterland. The private studios of three local Cooran artists, including a jeweller, will also open over the weekend to give those who visit a personal insight into the artist’s creative process and their inspiration. Exhibition organiser Mia Hacker said the high number of submissions this year reflected the Tall Trees Art Exhibition’s founding principle of ‘Art for all, by all’. “While the quality of work produced by local artists is certainly considered during its curation, the enduring appeal of our exhibition is our preference to feature a diversity of featured artists and mediums to inspire creativity in others in our community,” she said. There will also be interactive arts and music workshops utilising recycled materials. The event will open in the evening of Friday, 30 June with an artist meet and greet at Hinterland Restaurant. Exhibition venue opening times will vary from 7am to 5pm over the weekend. For more information visit www.talltreesart.com. ● noosatoday.com.au

MONEY FOR HALL UPGRADES Council’s draft budget includes more than $150,000 for painting and repairs to six community halls on top of usual running costs. Mayor Tony Wellington said repainting would occur at the Cooran and Federal Halls, the Pomona School of Arts Hall as well as the Kin Kin Sport and Recreation building. The Tinbeerwah and Kin Kin Halls will be provided with protective termite barriers. As well as the community halls, $50,000 will also be spent to improve safety, carry out repairs and make a range of site improvements at the Girraween Sports Complex. ●

make sure they’re OK and let them out in the morning.” The one special purchase Dave has to make is a replacement engagement ring for his wife. “I guess I’ll have to propose to her again,” he said. “I messed it up first time so I can get it right the second time.” ●

His three-year project that will involve collaboration with the Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH), QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute and USC colleagues Dr Erin Price and Professor Peter Timms. “My goals are to develop a novel diagnostic tool that is cheaper, faster and less laborious than current methods, and to better understand why some patients with chronic lung disease don’t respond successfully to treatment,” he said. He said current diagnostic methods took between 24 and 72 hours to determine antibiotic resistance, but his new test would provide results in just one to two hours. ●

VINES RESEARCH USC Senior Research Fellow Dr Andrew Marshall was among 91 new ARC Future Fellows announced this month by Federal Minister for Education and Training Senator Simon Birmingham for research considered to have critical national importance. He said the $900,000 fellowship would enable the appointment of two PhD students and a postdoctoral fellow to assist him in the four-year project in conducting work across Africa and along the east coast of Australia, and collaborate with researchers in the United Kingdom, the USA, Denmark and Tanzania. “Lianas have a negative impact on forests because they grow up rapidly in disturbed areas of forest and compete intensely with trees for nutrients and light,” he said. “But they are also part of the forest ecosystem and biodiversity, and they provide food and pathways for animals. “This project will help us estimate the economic impact of vines on tropical forests and could have significant implications for forest health, the implementation of restoration methods in priority areas, and the global economy.” ● Thursday, 29 June, 2017

ENGLISH LANGUAGE TRAINING EXPANSION BY MARGARET MACCOLL Noosa-based company Lexis Training has expanded, opening the group’s third Asian language school in Busan, South Korea, this month. Established in 2004 as an English language school in Noosa Junction, Lexis has grown with five Australian locations, one in Kobe, Japan, and now a second in Korea with its first in Seoul.

The Lexis Group trains more than 8000 international students from more than 90 countries each year in language, professional and teacher training programs and continues to be headquartered from Noosa. Lexis group director Ian Pratt first visited Busan as a university student in the 1990s. Like Noosa, it has grown to become a

world class beach destination. Haeundae Beach, located around 20 minutes from the city centre, is widely regarded as one of North Asia’s leading beach resorts, attracting tourists from around the region. “The juxtaposition of futuristic city towers, surf beaches and the old fishing port is unlike anything I’ve ever seen,” he said. “In an age where we are seeing so

many Australian jobs being exported internationally, I hope Lexis can be an example of a regionally based Australian company operating competitively throughout the Asia-Pacific” After completing high school and tertiary education in Queensland, Lexis Korea managing director Jeeho Kim has returned to his home country to manage Lexis’ operations. ●

IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT … SUCCESS HAS MANY FATHERS It looks like the battle for Cooloola Hill property is brewing with more than one real estate agency laying claim to the top sales in the region. Houses in the millionaire rows of Arkana Drive and Toulambi Street have garnered prices ranging from $1.4 to $1.8 million. For anyone sizing up the property market or searching for an agent this situation may be a little confusing. Both Belle property and McGrath have recently distributed local brochures to spruik their success, both saying they have sold the same properties. How can that be, you may ask. Both are completely correct in their claims. The properties were sold by agent Patrick Reed while he was working with McGrath. So he can legitimately claim their sales and so can McGrath. ●

KEPT ON TRUCKIN’ Residents along Cooroy Mountain Road are wondering what happened to their powerlines - and one even lost most of their house connection box. While police and Energex were quick to reach the site and make it safe, people think the driver of the large vehicle that took the lines probably didn’t even know it had happened at the time. If someone made it home to find their vehicle wrapped in power cables and connection boxes, the people on Cooroy Mountain Road would like to hear from you. ●

Kangaroos are causing havoc with driverless car manufacturers. A recent ABC report from Volvo revealed their hopping motion throws out the car’s animal detection system. Seems it judges the distance differently between them being in the air and on the ground. But considering Aussie drivers hit more than 16,000 skippys every year, according to NRMA, it’s back to the drawing board for the boffins. ● noosatoday.com.au

NEWS GRAND OLD GARRY A KARATE GURU Ten years after taking up karate at 64 retired police detective Garry Maher is teaching other over 50s they too can take up the art to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle. The 74-year-old who is a Black Belt 3rd Dan teacher at the Sunshine Coast Martial Arts group Karate Budokan International said his involvement with the masters group had been one of the highlights of his karate journey. He has helped people who nervously commenced their training with feelings that it was beyond them into becoming agile, alert, confident and motivated people with a number of his students progressing to their orange belt, three belts senior to their initial white belt in the past year. “I can identify with such people because I nervously commenced karate at 64 years of age wondering what on earth I was doing in a karate school in the first place,” he said. “But I hung in there, and with the assistance of the friendly and professional teaching staff, worked my way up through the belt ranks until I reached what I thought was an impossible dream - a 1st Dan Black Belt at the age of 68, later my 2nd Dan and eventually my 3rd Dan at 72 years of age.

Fed, now watered Karate teacher Garry Maher Since then Garry has gone on to bigger things, winning a silver medal in the Queensland State Karate championships in Brisbane and later another silver medal in the KBI world championship competing with competitors half a century younger than him. WHAT ARE YOUR MOST POPULAR WINTER DISHES?

DO PEOPLE CHANGE THEIR DRINKING HABITS IN WINTER?

We have all sorts of entertainment and it’s just as busy in winter. We’ve got heaters and blankets for the beer garden. On Saturday night we have a dance band in the bunker. ●

The mushroom stack and French toast with berries and bananas are really popular. People like a soup in winters so we have a soup of the day. Bacon and eggs is something people eat all year round. I’ve noticed they’re eating avocado on sourdough a little less. ●

Both my mother and father are teachers, so I guess it runs in my blood. I have always loved children and have a lot of little cousins and two younger siblings. I am a big sister to all of them and it was only natural for me to go into teaching after high school. What do you think of our school system? HOMELESS AFTER CAMP SHOP SHUTS may turn up for the school holidays, Ben said. Resident Steve Cumner and his girlfriend Emma are still hopeful of securing social housing, but don’t expect it will be in the local area. Pauline Hammant who lived at the camp with children including a 15-yearold son, moved two weeks ago to a unit she was allocated in Townsville but returned on the weekend to visit. “I missed everyone,” she said. “But you’re not going to get a place around here. “There’re too many people and not enough houses. I had hoped I could stay here until the kids finished school.” Concreter Greg Tapscott said he wasn’t optimistic about gaining a place to live. “Living here, it’s not much but you have a bit of an area,” he said. “In housing you’re in a box. I’d rather be here and there’s no way I’ll get rid of my dog. It seems like the council want to just shunt us all anywhere.” ●

About a month after being told they needed to find new homes, some residents at Johns Landing camping grounds are moving on, but tension is mounting for others concerned for their future. About three-quarters of residents have registered for social housing, some are securing places through friends and others are hitting the highway. On Sunday camping ground owners Pat and Ben Johns were cleaning up the camp of a long-term resident who had found another home in Tin Can Bay. Three residents had moved out last week, Ben said. He said negotiations with Noosa Council on their purchase of the riverside property had been finalised and the camp shop would shut next week giving the couple more time to clean up. Under the sales agreement, the camping ground was unable to accept any new campers including those who

TENNIS WITH THE RICH AND FAMOUS For most of his life Pete Hoad rubbed shoulders with the rich and famous growing up as the son of one of Australia’s tennis icons Lew Hoad. At his father’s luxury tennis resort in Spain he grew up as a child playing with actor Sean Connery’s son. As he got older Pete Hoad played and coached at the exclusive Club de tenis y padel Lew Hoad in Mijas on the Costa del Sol and took over as manager of the club when his father died in 1994. Noosa Today caught up with him at John’s Landing where he has lived for the past three years. Lew Hoad was regarded as the greatest amateur tennis player of the 1950s. He won Wimbledon, the French and Australian Opens and with doubles partner Australian Ken Rosewall doubles wins in Wimbledon and the French and Australian competitions. Pete said his father had a knack of being in the right place at the right time. His parents moved to Spain in the 1960s and started building a tennis club. “When we moved there, there were three or four fishing villages,” he said. “It was a military dictatorship. There was no crime, no traffic lights, now it’s like the Gold Coast. When I go back I can’t take it. It’s full of foreigners. All the Spaniards got pushed out.” The club played host to many film stars and sporting greats. “My dad was extremely well connected,” he said. “Sean was there in the early days, in his James Bond days. There were other actors - Donald Pleasence and Richard Burton. I was there when Princess Diana came. She booked a holiday for herself and two girlfriends. “The media caught on to it and it all went wrong.

Pete Hoad at his camp at John's Landing

Pete was 34 when he took over the club. “We struggled in the late 90s,” he said. “We got into debt. We couldn’t afford to continue with it. It was very sad. It was a beautiful club, a magnificent property. After the sale Pete moved to Perth with his wife and seven children. “We couldn’t afford to live in Europe. “I was virtually

working as an illegal alien. I knew the authorities and police and we employed people so they turned a blind eye. Moving to Australia for a better life for his children, he said, “was the best thing I did.” Sadly, his marriage broke up, but Pete stayed in Perth for 10 years coaching tennis and doing some laboring work. He returned in 2003 to Spain where his mother, now 83, still lives at a cottage at the tennis club and stayed until 2007. Wanting a fresh start he headed to the east coast but admits of late his life had “spiraled out of control”. For 15 years Pete has been without a permanent home, often by choice. He said he had held full-time jobs over those years but on principle refused to pay more than half his income on rent. “I’d rather pitch a tent,” he said. For the past three years he has lived at John’s Landing. Pete is hoping to soon rent a place in Kin Kin. ●

BENCH OUT TO PASTURE One of the joys of living near Exit 52 at Peregian Beach was the opportunity to sit on a bench that had been installed several years ago at the top of the most western dune by a community loving person. This enabled visitors and residents to sit and enjoy a magnificent view of the beach, the brilliant ocean, and the playful antics of surfers, kite surfers, swimmers and passing boats. The bench provided a superb view that enhanced the magic of our location while providing a safe viewing platform. However, government machinery climbed the dunes and marred the vegetation, leaving huge scars that will take years to eradicate from this pristine setting. The bench which had provided so much pleasure was lifted from its position, leaving an ugly reminder of a decision made by some bureaucrat. Removing this elegant seat has destroyed the happiness of so many people. Peregian Beach has lost a fantastic viewing location which had provided opportunities for older people to sit and enjoy the benefits of living or visiting this area. It is a shame that whoever conceived and implemented this decision did not consider the pleasure of the inhabitants and visitors to the region. A major source of enjoyment has been arbitrarily removed and has left residents heartbroken. What was the reason for this defacement? Joe Jesienowski, Peregian Beach.

the president of Noosa Parks Association to present the historical records and science source he relies on to make these insulting comments, and further that Dr Gloster on behalf of his NPA immediately issue an apology to Noosa’s commercial fishing families listed above. president Dr Michael Gloster’s letter in Noosa Today (22 June) titled ‘Pearls of Wisdom’. In paragraph three he states, “in the late 1800s and early 1900s commercial fishermen decimated the Noosa Rivers and Weyba Creek’s oyster reefs”. In paragraph four Dr Gloster also states “further, since the 1950s commercial fishermen have regularly dredged the bottom of the river and middle lakes using beam trawls, further destroying the few remaining oyster reefs and hard bottom structure that juvenile oysters rely on to restructure themselves and survive”. Based on Dr Ruth Thurstan’s 54-page thesis “Historical Ecology of the Noosa Estuary Fisheries” (Attachment 1, P&O Agenda, 1211-15 Item 7, Noosa Council records), Dr Gloster’s letter is not only “spurious”, but is insulting and offensive and denigrates Noosa’s earliest of pioneering commercial fishing families such as former Councillor Olive Donaldson, the well-respected and much loved Massoud, Ross, Tedford and my own Clarey families. I therefore call on Dr Michael Gloster,

Noosa Council 2017-'18 budget discussions have focused on the $40 million loan council has with the Queensland Treasury Corporation (QTC) following de-amalgamation from the Sunshine Coast Regional Council. It’s reasonable to expect the new Noosa Council to take up this QTC loan responsibility, as it financed the original Noosa Council commitment to build the Noosa Junction Transit Centre, Girraween Sporting Park Complex plus the Cooroy Library upgrade. In fact the QTC loan was part of the approximate $50 million upgrades spent on the Noosa Hinterland and coastal areas over four years under the Sunshine Coast Council by Councillors Russell Green and Lew Brennan as compared to the original Noosa Council base rate of $0.5 million per year for these areas. Jeff Nuske, Noosa Heads.

We heard Tony Wellington say on Seven News on 20 June that the parking situation around Hastings Street was on residents’ minds. Doesn’t the traffic situation and the safety of school children, their parents, and other Noosa residents on Beckmans Road surely outweigh the concern for tourists’ parking by Noosa’s resident ratepayers? Noosa Council’s reluctance to Noosa Civic’s expansion and Tewantin’s white elephant TAFE are two more concerns to rate-paying residents living in Noosa Shire, not Hastings Street Shire. Mark and Jan Rose, Cooroy.

Having read Mr O’Brien’s latest Community Newsletter, I am frankly amazed that the word “climate” does not occur once and “energy” only gets a mention when you refer to a “helping hand" with power bills for those in receipt of other government assistance. You must be very aware of the hurt that all your electorate is feeling due to the energy policies being pursued by the Coalition Government. Quite apart from the pain that electricity price increases are causing households, Australia is losing whole industries and hence jobs. All this while the government of which you are a part, is inflicting this on the country for absolutely no gain. Our Chief Scientist and latest climate/energy expert, Professor Finkel, admits that even if Australia were to stop burning fossil fuels altogether, it would make not the slightest difference to the global climate. Maybe you are embarrassed at this situation and you therefore don’t mention it in your community newsletter, but I think you owe it to the people of Wide Bay whom you represent to let them know that you do not support this national economic suicide mission and that you are making this clear in the party room in an effort to stop this ridiculous, futile obeisance to the United Nations. Make it clear that you represent the people of Wide Bay, not the UN. Case Smit, Noosaville.

TWO MORE JOIN TEAM OF THE CENTURY AFTER just winning the award for top office and highest gross closed commissions, there is no doubt that the Century 21 Conolly Hay Group is on a roll, turning into one of the most desirable workplaces on the Sunshine Coast. Expanding not only their target suburbs, the team around David Conolly and Mike Hay keeps on growing all the same. Long-time local agent Trevor Mangels and experienced agent Bruce Samazan are the newest additions to the successful Century 21 Conolly Hay Group team. Many readers may already know Trevor, who has carved out a long career in the Noosa real estate industry helping locals and visitors buy, sell and invest since 1985. After a career in the motor industry, Trevor said the challenge of real estate and matching clients with their dream home is what attracted him to the industry. “There are so many things to look for such as location, close proximity to schools, shops, public transport and the quality of the building,” he said. “And most importantly whether finance needs to be pre-approved so they know what price range to consider while looking to buy.” Trevor is a fully licensed real estate agent and has a solid history of successful sales in the Noosa region while now specialising in residential homes and investment properties in Noosa Heads and surrounding areas. In addition to Trevor the Century 21 team welcomed Bruce Samazan, who joined the real estate industry after a

The rest is history and here I am,” he said. Bruce went on to join Realestate. com.au as a digital marketing consultant where he successfully migrated through various customer service, sales and management roles within the business over his 10-year career within the company. Bruce now lives in Noosaville with his family and brings with him a wealth of knowledge in online marketing, a passion for the industry and a love for the local region. “Every client gets a fully qualified, reputable and strictly professional level of service. It is what they can expect; nothing less!” he said. “Especially regarding the areas of negotiation and communication. To be a good sales person you need to listen carefully, in order to facilitate the correct outcome for customers and their required property needs. But it is the customer satisfaction that I have always found most rewarding in this industry.” Century 21 Conolly Hay Group principal David Conolly said the team were thrilled to welcome both Trevor and Bruce to their award-winning agency. “We just know their expertise and knowledge is only going to enhance the excellent level of service we are so well known for and with our continuously growing team of talented people, we believe we can proof our excellent reputation within the Noosa shire and beyond.” ●

HIGH DEMAND FOR NOOSA HOUSING THE house market has rebounded from a period of low listings with a surge of stock, in some markets as much as 100 per cent more in the March quarter, according to the REIQ’s March Quarter Queensland Market Monitor. REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said that agents have welcomed the additional activity as homeowners once again put their faith in the housing market. “It was quite lean towards the end of the year last year and we knew that agents were struggling to get enough stock for buyers in the really popular price points of most markets,” she said. More broadly, Queensland continues to run a two-speed housing market, with regional Queensland facing continued

challenges north of the Sunshine Coast - with the exception of Cairns, which is performing well - while the south-east corner exhibits steady, sustainable growth. Looking at south-east areas where the market is performing well, the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast were the two strongest performing markets in Queensland again this quarter, outperforming Brisbane (as they did last quarter). The Sunshine Coast continues to grow and, along with the Gold Coast, these centres formed the top two most popular migration destinations for people moving within Australia in 2016. More than 12,000 people moved to these two coastal destinations

(excluding overseas immigration) last year, according to ABS data. Noosa was the top annual median house performer with an annual growth of 9.2 per cent compared with March 2016. This has positioned Noosa as the second-most expensive house market with an annual median sale price of $615,000. “Overall, the March quarter has started 2017 off reasonably steady in most markets with consistent if somewhat moderate growth in both the house and unit markets. “Our hope is that the recovering coal price will give the Queensland economy a much-needed boost and that the government’s recently announced infrastructure and jobs

PETE MURRAY -

SO BEAUTIFUL BY HOLLIE HARRIS

Byron Bay singer-songwriter and one of Australia’s most loved musicians, Pete Murray is heading our way on his Aussie tour as he stops off at Villa Noosa for one amazing performance. With the release of his new single, Take Me Down, also comes the release of his sixth studio album, Camacho on 2 June. With over one million album sales to his name, the quiet achiever of Australian music will showcase new tracks and old favourites on an epic 33-date national Camacho Tour that will kick-start in Lismore on 12 July and finish up in Darwin on 9 September! “I’ll be taking the full band on the road and heading to a stack of places I haven’t been to in a while. I’m also really excited about playing the new music for the first time and cannot wait to get out there and see the crowd’s reaction!” Pete said. The Australian singer-songwriter whose first three full-length albums reached number one on the noosatoday.com.au

Australian music charts, has been nominated several times at the ARIAs and has had several songs reach the top 40 in Australia. His first LP, Feeler, reached number one a few months after its mid-2003 release, and his follow-up record, See The Sun reached a similar level of success, with all of the singles receiving widespread airplay. His third studio album, Summer At Eureka, was released in May 2008. To date Pete Murray has sold over one million records. Some of the greatest influences on his career are Nick Drake, Neil Young and Bob Dylan. “The records I love by people like Nick Drake, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, they are built to last. I wanted this to be an album like that, something you can pull out in 30 years and still hear the feeling in it, rather than something that’s dated by the musical fashions of the day,” he said. Murray started to learn the guitar at age 22 and his ability soon improved with plenty of practice. Eventually, he worked up the courage to take his guitar to a barbecue singing songs by Neil Young and Crowded House. However, his main interest was in

pursuing a career in sports medicine and traveling. Eventually, enough people told him that he had the talent to be successful in music and he started a musical career, playing small gigs around the country with flautist Col McIntyre, eventually putting a band together (including keyboard player Ben McCarthy, who works with him to this day). In 2002, he released an independent album The Game in Brisbane and moved to Melbourne to pursue a musical career. Murray signed a contract with Sony BMG Australia in early 2003. Feeler was released on 21 July 2003 with the title track as the first single. Triple J radio started playing the track with the Nova FM and Triple M networks picking up the track. With this support, Feeler entered the ARIA top 50 album charts in 2003 and the rest, as they say, is history. Catch Pete Murray in Noosa Thursday 13 July at Villa Noosa. This is an 18+ event and tickets can be purchased online at www.villanoosa.com.au to avoid dissapointment. ● Thursday, 29 June, 2017

WATCH Despicable Me 3 (PG) Starring: Jenny Slate, Kristen Wiig, Steve Carell

The Minions are back - oh yes, and Steve Carell’s Gru too - just in time for the school holidays. The third Despicable Me outing sees Gru, the reformed villain and now the father of three girls thanks to the first movie and married to secret agent Lucy (DM2) so there is nowhere to go with the plot, right? Well not really, but they went there anyway. In the third instalment, Gru’s family grows again to include a long-lost brother, played by Steve Carell. He also discovers where his evil streak came from - it seems that his father was an internationally renowned bad guy. While bad came naturally to Gru, much to his mother’s disdain (cue a small cameo by Julie Andrews) Stu has trouble stealing lollipops. Set straight after the second movie, we also get a half-baked look at Lucy (Kristen Wiig) adjusting to motherhood and of course lots and lots of cute minion moments. And then there’s the bad guy Balthazar Bratt, a former child star who grew up to become obsessed with the character he played in the ‘80s, and proves to be Gru’s most formidable nemesis to date. ●

Heart Break, by Lady Antebelum

Disappearing off the Face of the Earth, by David Cohen

For lovers of the country sound, after a year hiatus and a solo project, Charles Kelley reunited with fellow band members to create a soulful seventh studio album. Ballad Big Love In A Small Town is beautiful with its deep lyrics and graceful vocals from the trio while This City brings back the country vibes with its banjos and acoustic guitars. Lady Antebellum are slowly drifting away from the strong country sound and sounding more mainstream, however, their album lacks a showstopper track, and the album just feels like it flows from one average song onto the next. Where is that spark of the 2009 smash hit Need You Now that got hearts racing and tongues wagging? ●

Hideaway Self Storage, located just off Brisbane’s M1, is in decline. But manager Ken Guy and his assistant Bruce carry on with their daily rituals even as the facility falls apart around them. Lately, however, certain tenants have been disappearing off the face of the earth, leaving behind units full of valuable items. Ken has no idea where these rent defaulters have gone but he thinks he might be able to turn their abandoned ‘things’ into a nice little earner that could help save his business. While further along the motorway, construction of a rival facility hints at a mysterious past. ●

Elly will be accompanied by the David Bentley Trio (DB3). Elly consistently captures audiences with her soulful seductive voice. From a very young age, she has had the ability to invoke the charge given to past greats and take it somewhere new.

She first paved her way into the Australian jazz scene when she won the prestigious Generation in Jazz vocal scholarship in 2008, judged by James Morrison who said “From the moment I first heard Elly sing, I knew she had that classic, indefinable thing that makes one a jazz singer. It’s not just a sound, or a choice of notes but a way of approaching a song that lets the listener know - this is the real thing.” TICKETS: Pre-sale $15 (+ booking fee) through Oztix or at the Imperial Hotel phone 5442 8811 or $20 at the door. IT’S A HOT RESULT FOR WASABI BY HOLLIE HARRIS Noosa's own Wasabi Restaurant and Bar is the top eatery in Queensland and one of the top 100 in Australia, according to the Australian Financial Review. Only four Queensland restaurants made the cut, voted by those in the know, Australia’s chefs and restaurateurs. Wasabi ranked 48th overall in the poll, announced on Monday evening. Executive chef and co-owner Zeb Gilbert was happy to be included once again in the top 100. “We are thrilled to be included again in the Financial Reviews top 100 and to take out number one spot in Queensland is great, especially considering we are a regional restaurant," Zeb said. Wasabi has gone from strength to strength over the past 12 months. Last year they ranked 74th on the list. “We are really grateful to have jumped 26 spots in a list of just 100 places. Especially considering that over that time we opened two new businesses, The Cooking School Noosa and Ibento Boutique Event Space. We promised our customers that Wasabi would continue to grow and evolve during this busy time and recognition like this helps us to show them we kept to our word." Zeb says that the hard-working team members who work across the three businesses are what make The Wasabi Group a success. “We couldn’t do it without them, they are the key to our success,“ he said. For more information on any of The Wasabi Group businesses, go to their website: www. wasabisb.com.

FOCUS ON … Tax and Financial Advice STOP AND THINK ON THE TAX

BY HOLLIE HARRIS Money is on everyone’s mind as another financial year rolls by. For those who are looking to start the new financial year off on the right foot, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission’s (ASIC) website has advice on finding the right financial adviser. According to the website, anyone choosing an adviser should check the ASIC’s financial advisers’ register at www. moneysmart.gov.au to make sure they have the right experience and qualifications for the level of service required. They can also check the register to make sure that the adviser is licensed and hasn’t been banned or disqualified from giving advice. Once they have a shortlist of advisers, the ASIC encourages people to check the history, qualifications and current employment status of advisers before approaching them about getting advice. The ASIC’s financial advisers’ register tells visitors: · The adviser’s qualifications, experience and employment history; · What product areas the adviser can provide advice about; · Whether the adviser is a member of any professional bodies or industry associations that are relevant to providing financial services; · Whether the adviser has been the subject of disciplinary action by ASIC; · The name and number of the Australian

Financial Services (AFS) licence holder who employs or authorises the financial adviser to provide advice; and · Details about who owns or controls the licence holder. ASIC warns people to not deal with advisers who do not operate under a licence, because they are breaking the law and there is little protection if things go wrong. Once a few advisers have been selected, a copy of their financial services guide (FSG) can be found by visiting their website or by phoning and asking them to send one. Also check if the adviser has the right qualifications and experience needed. According to ASIC, a financial adviser can be qualified to give advice after meeting only minimum training requirements. To increase the chance of getting good advice look for an adviser who also has a diploma, an advanced diploma or degree qualification in a relevant discipline such as finance, economics, accounting or financial planning. Also, ASIC encourages people to make sure the adviser focuses on the services and strategies they can offer rather than the products they can sell. Lastly, ASIC encourage people to not be afraid to ask an adviser about their qualifications and experience. If they don’t have enough experience or knowledge in a particular area, find another adviser. For more information, head to www. moneysmart.gov.au/investing. ●

GOT OUR MINDS ON OUR MONEY

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is reminding Australians to stop and think before giving their personal details or hardearned money to scammers this tax time. Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said 48,084 scams were reported to the ATO between July and October last year. “We have already seen a five-fold increase in scams from January to May this year and typically expect further increases during the tax time period,” Ms Anderson said. “Already this year, the ATO has registered over 17,067 scam reports. Of these, 113 Australians handed over $1.5 million to fraudsters with about 2500 providing some form of personal information, including tax file numbers. “One victim lost $900,000 to scammers over the course of several months, even borrowing money from family and friends. “The large number of people lodging their tax returns means scammers are particularly active, so it’s important to keep an eye out for anything that looks suspicious and protect your private information.” Ms Anderson said Australians were generally good at catching and reporting scams, but some scams were harder to spot than others. “Scammers locate genuine ATO numbers from our website and project these numbers in their caller ID in an attempt to legitimise their call - a form of impersonation known as “spoofing”. While we do make thousands of calls per week to the community, our outbound calls do not project numbers on

RIPPLE OF PEACE ALL AROUND

BY HOLLIE HARRIS The peace and tranquility of leafy, sunny Arcadia Street seems to permeate the waiting room and corridors of the street’s newest health service, Ripple Psychology. Even as you sip on your iced water awaiting your appointment with either Dave or Melita, the clinic’s two psychologists who own and operate the service, you could be forgiven for thinking you’d wandered into a quiet day spa, as the soothing background jazz accompanies the dappled, filtered sunlight that flickers through the tinted glass or down the striking skylights in each

consulting room. Having operated out of substandard, noisy or cramped offices for many years, the husband and wife team were determined to secure a purpose-built venue that encouraged and promoted inner calm, equilibrium and relaxed comfort. They have certainly succeeded in that quest, and if you are considering working on your own tranquility and quality of life, why not pop into the unattended waiting rooms at the top of the stairs in Arcadia Street? WORKSHOP INITIATIVE TO HELP OUT A large number of business in the Noosa Shire are microbusinesses with a broad age demographic. Many people come to the shire (both single and with family) lured by this great lifestyle. They soon realise the difficulty to gain employment, so they start a business. According to ABS statistics only five per cent of small business in Australia do any strategic planning. The Noosa Chamber of Commerce and Industry assisted by the Noosa Council Economic Development initiative is pleased to announce the arrival of the Business Success Workshop. The Australian Bureau of Statistics claim 60 per cent of small business fail in their first three years of operation. The ABS data also indicates the vast majority (44 per cent) fail due to lack of strategic planning. Launching in September, the BSW will assist Noosa business owners to develop a simple and effective strategic plan, aimed at reducing this statistic. Mayor Tony Wellington congratulated the chamber on developing this initiative. “It’s wonderful to see our local chamber providing this type of support to the business community. This program will make a significant contribution to the overall health of the local economy by helping local businesses discover the tools for success,” he said. The top three reasons most people run into trouble are: · Jumping into the business and beavering away madly hoping that all will be well, because their idea is great and they have a great work ethic, however, they have had no “how to run a business” training. · The perception that it is too difficult and that you need a marketing/business degrees to manage the hurdles. · Even with some business training, becoming too focused on working “in the business” and do not make any time to work “on the business”.

Michael Weston and David Bell, co-founders of the Business Success Workshop with Noosa Shire mayor Tony Wellington. The Business Success Workshop consists of the two two-hour modules delivered over two days, a week apart, conducted by two extremely experienced businessmen resident in the Noosa Shire. Attendees will emerge with a roadmap complete with goals, milestones and action items that will set them on the path to success. One of the BSW coaches will contact each business after 30 days to see how they are doing. Each workshop is limited to 15/16 attendees. Each

business may bring two attendees. Some workshops may have eight business(16 people) or a combination of two people and one person per business. CCIQ Noosa is focused on establishing the environment for business to prosper and equip small business owners with the skills and knowledge to manage business in Noosa. For more information on the Business Success Workshop including workshop dates and registration go to www. bswnoosa.com ●

TRY THIS … Fire Safety FOUR … Biggest mistakes people make in a fire.

1

TIME People sometimes overestimate the time they have during a fire, and they end up delaying their escape from the property. A small fire can become a huge one within one minute.

2

PANIC Some who are awakened by a fire while sleeping tend to panic and run to the door, try to keep calm and feel the bedroom door for heat using the back of your hand. If it feels hot, don’t open it. Instead, look for towels or sheets to cover the gap at the bottom of the door to prevent smoke from coming in. Then try to go to the nearest window and escape if possible.

3

SMOKE People tend to misjudge the deadliness of smoke in a fire. Most fire fatalities approximately 50-80 percent - are caused by smoke inhalation and toxic gases, not burns. Even a small fire makes enough smoke to debilitate and stop you from making it to an otherwise reachable exit. The metre of space under the smoke is invisible toxic gas. Get down low, real low.

4

SMOKE DETECTORS Too often people turn off or remove batteries from their smoke detectors because they think nothing bad will happen. Smoke detectors must be placed next to sleeping rooms and the batteries must be changed every six months.

NOOSA TODAY - ON FIRE BY HOLLIE HARRIS I love to try something for the first time and recently, thanks to Russell Mayne from North Coast Fire Protection, I learnt how to use a whole range of fire hydrants on a real fire. Noosa Today undertook our yearly Fire Safety Training and although I was wondering how much do I really need to know besides where to exit and where’s the fire hydrant, the session was an endless fountain of unknown facts. Russell kept us all fully engaged through the seminar, showing us chilling video footage of real time fire spreading from ignition point. He taught us how to manage a whole range of different variables with a few funny stories thrown in the mix. Then we got to do the really fun part. Russell set a controlled fire (and a pretty decent one at that) and let each of us have a go at putting it out with a selection of hydrants. Who knew there was more than one! He kept the gas fire burning as we attempted to blast it out using the different elements; power, foam, water and a fire blankets. This was so much fun, and a little scary, but seriously important practice. For an avid camper like me, getting a proper understanding of how gas bottles can catch fire and what exactly to do avoid it exploding was invaluable. We all have these at home on the barbecue and with the injuries sustained by users who don’t know how to manage a leak or fire from a gas bottle a common tragedy, this part of

Choose the right hydrant, safety pin out, test and blast. 100 per cent valuable training (and 100 per cent fun). the training was so insightful. Gaining an understanding of real time fire and smoke dangers in the workplace also translated directly to home, in the car or out and about in public. I was surprised by the number of things I thought I knew, but actually had wrong such as; if a fire starts on your stove top, you must turn off the exhaust fan and if it’s in the oven, never open the door and the metre of space underneath the smoke in a house or

workplace fire is deadly poison and you must keep a cool hose on a gas bottle if it’s on fire to avoid explosion. These are only a few of the lifesaving tools we were given in our training and I highly recommend Russell and his little team from Cooroibah taking your staff through the process. Things have changed and these guys can get you up to date and they make it fun and seriously interesting too. It may just save your life. ● noosatoday.com.au

FOCUS ON … Health, Wellness & Beauty

HOW TO BEAT WINTER SNIFFLES BY HOLLIE HARRIS Winter is the most common season for contagious illnesses like the cold and flu. This is because the flu virus thrives in colder, drier air, and in the winter we’re more likely to be huddled indoors with our loved ones, giving germs a short journey from person to person. What’s the difference between the cold and flu? The cold and flu are both airborne respiratory illnesses, but there are only three types of flu, while hundreds of viruses could be responsible for your cold. They both involve headaches, fatigue, and chest discomfort. But there’s no way around it - with the flu, you’ll generally feel more miserable. You’ll have body aches and chills and a combination of symptoms that may include chest pain, coughing, diarrhea, or vomiting. If you’re still not sure, take your temperature. A common cold is rarely accompanied by a fever higher than 101 degrees. I’m sick. What do I do now? During the first three days of a cold or flu you are contagious, so protect your coworkers and loved ones by staying home. Sip hot soup or drink hot tea, stay hydrated, and plug in a vaporiser to keep moisture in the air. Lozenges can help with sore throats. Make yourself cosy on the couch and work your way through that neglected stack of Netflix movies: rest is an excellent way to help your body fight infection. Should I go to the doctor? Flu and colds are both caused by viruses, so antibiotics aren’t going to help. Most of the time, your best bet is chicken soup and

lots of sleep. However, there are a couple of things to watch out for: if your cold symptoms persist for more than a week, you may have a bacterial infection (a sinus infection, for example). If it’s extremely painful to swallow, you may have strep throat. Both of these illnesses are bacteria based and will respond positively to antibiotics. And of course, if you are having extreme dizziness, difficulty breathing, or

severe chest pain you should go visit your doctor immediately. How can I prevent getting sick next time? The most important step you can take in preventing another illness is to wash your hands frequently. Be mindful of how often you touch your nose, eyes, and mouth - each time you do, you could be infecting yourself with more germs. To help keep your immune system

strong, eat less saturated fats, exercise regularly, and drink green tea. Mind-body therapies, such as meditation, prayer, and yoga have been shown to boost immune function. Fruits such as acai berries, elderberries, and watermelons are immunesystem friendly too, so throw some fruit in the blender with some yogurt for a smoothie now and then. ●

THEY’VE GOT THEIR MOTORS RUNNIN’ In the lead up to the King of the Mountain Festival on 23 July is the 11th annual Poker Run on Sunday 2 July. Proudly supported by the CooroyPomona Lions Club, riders and their passengers will enjoy a scenic trip through the hinterland and can join in on a friendly game of poker along the way by collecting cards from designated stops. The holder of the best poker hand at the end of the day is declared the winner and there are additional random prize draws during the day. Last year saw over 200 riders participate in the Cooroy-Pomona Lions Club major fund-raiser. Event organisers are urging this year’s motorcycle participants to ride safely, obey the road rules and take their time to enjoy the scenic route. All efforts are made to ensure the safest route possible and that all card pick up locations can accommodate large groups of motorcyclists. Volunteers are briefed on the route and greet participants along the way to provide guidance and riders are encouraged to make the most of the good company and the beautiful scenery. Cost of entry is $20 per rider (including poker hand) plus $10 per pillion (nonpoker hand). Registrations commence from 7.30am at Stan Topper Park, Pomona. Bacon and egg muffins will be available to purchase before a 9am departure. Free tea and coffee and delicious home-made morning tea is also offered to participants.

The ride culminates at the Pomona Bowls club where riders can enjoy a beer during the raffle prize draws and winner’s presentation, and a free sausage sizzle.

As a volunteer-run organisation dedicated to serving and supporting the local community, fund-raising is an important part of the day and all entry fees go towards helping the Cooroy-Pomona

Lions support a wide range of local charities and school programs. For more information on the festival or poker run visit the website for more details www.kingofthemountain.com.au ●

MELBOURNE CROWDS URGED TO FLY NORTH Tourism Noosa has launched its winter campaign in Melbourne with the Noosa Relaxation Station in the highly visible Federation Square. Showcasing a warm winter holiday, the team has been joined by chef Matt Sinclair doing cooking demos, artist Pete Goodlet from the Noosa Open Studios event, musicians from the Noosa Jazz Party and Noosa Alive. In conjunction with the relaxation station, the Noosa team is running through Melbourne and a digital billboard is showcasing Noosa as the relaxation capital of Australia. ●

What’s up Sunshine? is Noosa Council’s exhibition to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the naming of the Sunshine Coast. The exhibition features photographs and video by leading local and Queensland artists as well as historic images from the Picture Noosa collection and pieces of memorabilia. “Picture Noosa has a significant collection that documents the life of Noosa and the region over the past five decades,” exhibition curator John Waldron said. “These images mixed with the creative works of artist photographers reveal events both good and bad. They show the changing landscape, towns and fashion, and document people celebrating, achieving, getting on with life and having fun. “It’s likely that local visitors to the exhibition may spot themselves in the photos on display and, if so, we’d love to hear their stories.” August 2017 marks 50 years since the name Sunshine Coast was officially gazetted by the Queensland Government to describe the region from Caloundra to Noosa. Then Landsborough, Maroochy and Noosa councils endorsed the name to cover the three shires for promotional purposes. “Sunshine Coast” replaced the name “Near North Coast”, which had previously been in use. It was not considered distinct enough or identifiable by southerners. What’s up Sunshine? will run until 23 July 2017 at Noosa Regional Gallery. Excerpts of the exhibition will be on display at Noosaville Library from 25 July to 14 August. ●

LIFE OF BRINE

PHIL JARRATT

LAZY WEEKEND, SLEEPY SANUR After the frenetic pace of a week or so of surfing, eating and drinking on Bali’s southwestern coast, we took a weekend break in sleepy Sanur, to do pretty much nothing, other than laze around, be massaged and catch up with some mates. So I checked us into the Besakih Beach Hotel, one of those old-school Bali hotels where I love the garden statuary and the overgrown lawns and know I’m going to hate the wi fi connectivity and the water pressure. But beachfront and right next door to the even older but still fabulous Tandjung Sari (and at a third of the price) who’s complaining? First on the catch-up list was our old pal Arthur Karvan, the flamboyant, articulate, black-eyed grand wizard master of Sydney’s best nightclub of the ’70s and ’80s (the eponymous Arthur’s), these days better known as the dad of a famous daughter, and as Bali’s most argumentative Buddhist. Arthur is always brimming with wonderful stories, and last Friday night at Massimo was no exception. That very day, he said, on his morning walk along the beach from Batujimbar to Segara, he had confronted a young developer who was overseeing the laying of a concrete construction slab over the sand of a public beach. Only his advanced age and his pious nature had prevented a fist fight ensuing. Sanur has always had its share of colourful bule (or Westerner) characters, from the fashion photographer Jack Mershon and his dancer wife Katharane in the ’30s, to the painter Donald Friend and Wija Wawo-Runtu, the Dutch-born creator of the Tandjung Sari, in the 1960s. Not being very good at doing nothing for long, I decided to spend some of my weekend learning about Adrien-Jean le Mayeur de Merpres, another character from the ’30s whom I had touched on a few years earlier in my book, Bali Heaven and Hell. A well-travelled and well-connected Belgian artist, Le Mayeur was already in his fifties when he arrived in Sanur. He was said to be connected to the Belgian royal family, but in Bali he was chiefly famous (and somewhat notorious) for his marriage to the

Gardens at Besakih Hotel. young (15) Balinese dancer who modelled for his paintings, the exquisitely beautiful Ni Nyoman Pollok. Visitors to the Le Mayeur beachside compound were amused to be greeted by the middle-aged painter, naked except for a sarong knotted under his considerable belly. But they were rendered speechless by the arrival of Ni Pollok, bearing the drinks tray on her head, her stunning breasts and tight brown stomach bare above her sarong. One 1930s visitor wrote: “A tall young woman came sedately towards us, her smooth, brown body, clothed only in a sarong, was broad-shouldered and narrowhipped. Her breasts floated in vigorous curves. Her face had the dignity of a Greek marble, with large eyes and sensual but clean-cut lips. Her black hair was brushed back and her pierced earlobes were distended with gold plugs. She would have been a sensation in any drawing room, in any kind of clothes.”

Wanting to visualise this scene with my own goggle-eyes, I set off up the beach for what is now the Museum Le Mayeur, a mostly-overlooked minor jewel in Bali’s cultural crown. The old beach compound, hidden away behind the noisy, crowded, Nusa Lembongan fast boat services, has seen better days. Most of the furniture has been removed and the vast body of Le Mayeur’s work, from the ’20s to the ’50s, is fading away behind glass on every wall. It would have been nice to clearly see the artist’s vision of his muse from every conceivable angle, but somehow I found the decay pleasantly, ah, decadent. Everywhere were shadowy images of Ni Pollok carrying water, topless, or dancing, topless, or fetching water from the well, topless. Here and there, for balance, a fading seascape painted in Turkey in 1921. I stood where the old boy had his easel and imagined I saw what he saw. Le Mayeur died in Brussels in 1958 while

seeking treatment for an ear cancer, having already, fearing the worst, cut a deal with Sukarno’s cultural minister to turn his home and studio into a museum. But Ni Pollok was given lifetime residence and the job of managing the museum. She turned the lounge and garden terrace into a party zone, and through the next couple of decades hosted some of Bali’s most chic private dinner parties, until a delegation from the ministry of culture, fearing that revelers might damage the art, asked her to cease and desist. I realised, casing the joint as we left, that when this salon was at its height of fame in the 1970s, my mates and I used to park our bikes about 100 metres from its entrance, just outside the walls of the hideous Bali Beach Hotel, while we surfed the long rights of Sanur Reef. So near, and yet so far. Enough of all this culture. Surf ’s up and we’re heading down the coast. ●

AROUND THE GROUNDS

PIRATES BAND TOGETHER AND RUN BY KELLIE DRINNAN NOOSA JUNIOR PIRATES The Under 9 Noosa Junior Pirates took on Caboolture. Lochie, the team captain and back from most of the season off with injury, ran the boys onto the field in what was the picture perfect winter day. Caboolture kicked off and it was a try right off the bat to the Pirates by Lukas and that’s where the free run ended. This was one of the Pirates' toughest games of the season and the boys had to dig deep and that they did. With massive tackling by all the boys, they came thick and fast with often two and three boys in the tackles. The team banded together and got across the line with Rhy, Bailey, Cooper and Sam across in the second half. All the team chipped in with great runs from Isaiah, great passing from Jak, and Lochie took out man of the match first game back and supporting the boys through the game. It was a tough game boys and Matt would be proud, you chipped in as a team and did a great job. Thanks to Jak and Isaiah for helping out - Luca and Clancy were missed from the team today. ●

NOOSA STUN LADDER LEADERS NOOSA CROQUET The Noosa Pennant team’s game against Caloundra at Caloundra, was an important match as Caloundra are sitting on the top of the ladder with Noosa lying in second place. As the Croquet Association believes in “level” playing fields, all players in competitions have handicaps that apply in matches. The Noosa team conceded 56 extra turns to the Caloundra players in this match, and receiving none. Despite this, Noosa thrashed Caloundra nine games to one, scoring 66 hoops to Caloundra's 44. 54 NOOSA TODAY

BETWEEN THE FLAGS

RON LANE

TOP HONOUR GOES TO JOHANNA Every year in Surf Life Saving Clubs throughout Australia, the major announcement at the Annual General Meeting is always the naming of the recipient of the club's highest honour - Life Member. Such is the prestige of this award that on some occasions no nominations are tabled, and it is not unusual for some clubs to go one, two or even three years, without a nomination being received. However this year at Sunshine Beach this was not the case; for on this occasion for her outstanding contribution to the club over many years, the name Johanna Redwood, Life Member, was announced. “This award was highly deserved,” said Club Captain Scott Summers. “Johanna has put in many years of hard work; patrolling, working with the Nippers, as well as coaching from the Nipper ranks through to the opens. Her work as a coach in Champion Life Saver, Patrol Competition and Pool Rescue has seen her win many medals at both State and National level.” This award gives the Sunshine Club something very unique, for Johanna and husband Warrick, are now both recipients of the Life Member Medal. Next week when the Annual Report comes to hand, a full summary of Sunshine’s performance for the 2016/17 season will be featured. In the history section of the Noosa Heads S.L.S.C. Annual Report it states: In 1928, 13 members gained their Royal Life Saving Society Still Water and Surf Bronze, thus qualifying to patrol the beach. The following year, 1929, a clubhouse was placed on the beach. Since then, club President

Jo Redwood and Craig Law.

Ross Fisher noted “No Lives Lost on Our Beaches.” This record speaks for itself. He went on to thank all members for their outstanding contribution during the season. The dedication of Steve and Nikki Mawby, and Lorna Gardner, to the Seahorse Nippers was noted. The program has continued to grow in Australia with many young people now experiencing the delight of being a Nipper, when this was always thought to not be possible. He also noted the Noosa Nippers 50 years, the Surf Club (the Supporter Club)

HOOK, LINE & SINKER

Ian Young OAM chairman and Anton Mogg Manager, the Noosa Shire Council and the sponsors. All contributing to what has been an outstanding year. A major highlight contained in the report would have to be a letter from George Hill ESM, Chief Operations Officer for State Centre. It read as followers: "On behalf of the officers, advisors and staff of Surf Life Saving Queensland, I wish to formally acknowledge and thank your club and members for their vital support and patrol

assistance provided at Peregian Beach over the 2016/17 season. "Your Club members' actions to support a much-needed service at Peregian goes well above and beyond what’s expected and is a genuine testament to their training, professionalism, and commitment to coastal safety at all levels. They have done themselves their club, and the wider surf lifesaving movement proud.’’ When the Noosa Club stepped in to undertake the problem and stop the Peregian Club from going under, it was indeed a massive project . However, as of today the progress has been exceptional and the correspondence from George Hill contained within Noosa's Annual Report is indeed confirmation that from Sunshine Coast Coast Branch level through to State Centre, all are in agreeance that all steps taken are nothing but positive. Following the annual report it was announced that the club would be researching the problem of member retainment; a problem that is now affecting many clubs. To not only train them, but keep them within our ranks for the seasons ahead is essential. Regarding election of officers all standing members were returned to office unopposed; President Ross Fisher and Deputy Rob Harney. The Directors are: Finance Craig Moore, Surf Sports Peter French, Administration Barry Leek, Lifesaving/Club Captain Roger Aspinall, Junior Activities Sam Smith and Peregian Brett Leckie. We wish them well for the season ahead. ●

NOOSA WEATHER FORECAST MANGROVE JACK

THURSDAY Mostly sunny

COOLER WEATHER IS GREAT FOR THE OFFSHORE With the cooler weather we have experienced over the last week, anglers have had to dust off their favourite fishing jumper and get out there, the offshore gang have had a field day and with light offshore winds and little swell, have seen some great fish hitting the decks. Starting at Sunshine Reef there has been a good mixed bag including squire, maori cod, sweetlip, the odd tuna, pearlies and cod. Fishing the slow sinking floater method seems to be the most productive with plenty of fish taken as the bait makes its way through the water column. North Reef and Chardon’s Reef have produced snapper, pearlies, moses perch, sweetlip, and tuna. Micro Jigs have again proved their worth with plenty of quality fish bagged using this method. Plenty of anglers also did the run out to the Barwon Banks, there are reports of plenty of whales in the area so it goes without saying to keep your eyes peeled, there is always an upside to the whales being around and that is quite often there will also be cobia following these pods feeding on what the whales leave behind. Up towards Double Island, red emperor noosatoday.com.au

Truman Frazer with a nice golden trevally after a trip up north. have still been coming in as well as good size pearlies, snapper and jew. In the river there are still heaps of bream being caught throughout the system. The river mouth has been producing some nice fish to 35cm on strip baits and mullet gut. Smaller grub style soft plastics on lightly weighted jig heads have been of the lures of choice. Flathead have also been plentiful with a lot of good-sized flathead being caught along the Gympie Terrace stretch and around the frying pan. A few larger fish have been caught around the current line, dog beach and river mouth. Live baits and soft plastic in the prawn profile have been working well, trolling hard body

lures is another effective method and covers a lot of ground. Good sized big eye and giant trevally along with tailor and queenies have been taken at Woods Bay early morning and late arvo on surface lures. Golden trevally have gone a bit quiet over the last week however the odd one being caught on small micro jigs and soft plastics. There have been plenty of school sized jew in the upper reaches of the river with live baits doing most of the damage, most fish have been undersize but there has been the odd fish that made size. The beaches have been glorious with the early morning and late afternoons the prime times, anglers that have made the trip up to Noosa’s North Shore were not disappointed with some good catches of tailor reported, along with the tailor there were some nice bream, flathead, whiting and bigger dart. Most anglers are bait fishing with pillies, mullet strips, and salted bonito. The rock hoppers have been getting some nice fish at the rocks around Noosa National Park and Sunrise Beach - tailor, large bream and small snapper have all been taken. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! ●
