■ Book reveals how powerful vested interests destroyed Coranderrk…
Black Hat plot university degree and spend the past 27 years researching and writing history books, many of them documenting the life and times of post-European Aboriginal settlement. The clue that set him on his detective-like research for Barak vs The Black Hats was just a few words. “I found the clue at the State Library; no bigger than a postage stamp, about 25 words in a newspaper,” he said. “Coranderrk blacks alleged to have shot 10 deer”. “It didn’t say any more than that,” he said. It was new information that could explain why the Board for the Protection of Aborigines had changed almost overnight. “I thought there had to be a connection,” he said. That connection, he discovered was the very powerful and wealthy Victorian Acclimatisation Society. Mick said his research shows it was the VAS that released the deer at Yering. “They were nostalgic for the old country and had brought in rabbits, hares, foxes, starlings and the deer, including those that were shot by the Coranderrk Aboriginals. Barak was among those who shot the deer, but it was ruled that as they had been released for shooting, there were no charges to be faced. The book traces, through documents from that era, the clandestine moves behind the wealthy ‘Black Hats’ to close Coranderrk. “In 1874, intent upon additional introductions onto their land, these Black Hats had organised the dismissal of Coranderrk’s high-achieving 12357793-EPJ28-17

manager,” Mick said. When informed that William Barak had shot five of the released deer, they had taken control of the BPA and set about the expulsion of its residents. Mick said Barak stood firm, leading a series of deputations into Melbourne, and blocked every move by the Black Hats to close Coranderrk. Ultimately, Coranderrk was starved of funding and managers appointed with instructions to run the station into the ground. It closed in 1924. In a foreword to the book, Wurundjeri Elder, Aunty Joy Murphy Wandin AO, commended Mick for the book. “It contains truths from the mouths of white English males who were obsessed with taking from a civilisation that had existed for thousands of years,” she said. “Barak and our people were a caring and happy people,” she wrote. “They were wise and productive. They were self-taught engineers of an industry condensed in nature. “Mick’s book tells us of how the other side of the world lived, who only knew of richness in how they lived under a gilded roof, their expensive clothing and the golden coins; we were happy and caring people.” Mick said it’s a book that sets the record straight, and he knows it will be controversial. To hear Mick speak on the book, tune into The Conversation Hour with Jon Faine on ABC radio 774, Thursday at 11am, when he will be a guest. A launch is planned for Healesville in August.

A book launched on Sunday 9 July is set to turn the traditional understanding behind the final closure of Coranderrk Aboriginal Station on its head. Author Mick Woiwod launched the book, Barak vs The Black Hats of Melbourne, at the Rosina Auditorium in the grounds of the Abbotsford Convent as part of Naidoc Week. The latest of Mick Woiwood’s 21 history books, the 350 page volume is the culmination of half a life-time of passion for the history and stories of Aboriginal Victoria and the result of decades of research. The question that always puzzled Mick was why Coranderrk, a successful and productive enterprise on the Yarra River at Healesville, had ultimately failed. Accepted, he said, was that European settlement had removed the Wurundjeri people from their traditional hunting grounds in the first place, but the final 1924 removal of the last of the Coranderrk Aboriginals from the station was a mystery that played on his mind. Speaking from his home in Eltham, he said his interest in Australia’s first people started early as a boy living in Frankston. His grandfather pointed out mounds of shells as they walked along the beach together, he said. “That’s where blackfellas used to sit and eat their dinner,” he told me. “That got me thinking,” he added. It was a seed that led the 60-year-old bricklayer to a

Plastic bags sent packing By Kath Gannaway There was sewing and singing in the street in Healesville on 1 July with the official launch of Plastic Bag Free Healesville (PBF HV). The community-driven campaign to facilitate the use of re-usable shopping bags over plastic bags started last year, and is part of a growing initiative across Yarra Ranges Shire with Warburton and The Dandenong Ranges also pushing for plastic bag-free shopping. Hundreds of ‘boomerang’ bags made by PBF HV members and supporters were given to the Healesville IGA which has gone plastic bag-free, and a number of businesses have also purchased purpose-made calico bags to replace plastic. The launch was a community event with environment groups Healesville
Environment Watch Inc (HEWI) and Mt Toolbewong Landcare providing advice on ways to cut down on plastic bag and plastic use in general. The choir put together for the event got the message across with specially written lyrics, and Badger Creek Primary School drew people in with sizzling sausages. PBF HV members demonstrated just how easy it is to make bespoke and beautiful, shopping bags. Healesville IGA has committed to going plastic bag-free, and Coles and Liquor Land helped raise funds by going plastic bag-free for the day. PBF HV member David Johnston said it was a fantastic launch that created a focus of merriment in the main street and raised awareness. “A lot of people showed great interest in the information our group,

Plastic Bag Free Healesville, co-organiser Catherine Nolan and IGA owner Tony Yang got a ‘thumbs up’ from a local icon. 170407 Pictures: KATH GANNAWAY HEWI and Mt Toolbewong Landcare had to offer,” he said. A substantial number of calico bags were sold on the day, and the group has had to restock the ‘boomerang’ bags at IGA. “I don’t think that Healesville, or anywhere, will be plastic bag-free, or plastic-free, but we’re really pleased and encouraged that Tony (Yang), the owner of our IGA, and their manager, Leonie, have come on board,” David said. The idea behind the ‘boomerang’ bag is that people use them and return them.
If they are too beautiful to return, David said the hope was that having got them for free, people would keep them and use them. The group will continue to make the bags, and welcomes volunteers to join them. Also, donations of materials can be left in the PFB HV bin at Healesville Community Link. PBF HV would like to hear from businesses interested in using or selling their calico bags. Phone Ria on 0402 692 053, or David on 0419 002 797, or message through Facebook plasticbagfreehealesville.

Common memorial
By Derek Schlennstedt
There’s a big difference between the Australian War Memorial in Canberra and the memorial that the Seville War memorial Committee is planning for the town. It’s what they have in common - honouring and preserving the memory of Australia’s servicemen and women - that is at the heart of Director of the Australian War Memorial, Dr Brendan Nelson AO’s visit to Seville on Sunday 16 July. Dr Nelson, who will be accompanied by Federal Member for Casey, Tony Smith MP, is guest speaker at a fund-raising Morning Tea at Wild Cattle Creek Estate in Seville. In the year which commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Light Horse Charge at Beersheba, there will also be a display of memorabilia associated with Breaker Morant. Seville War Memorial Committee member Derry Aulich said previously unseen photographs of the Light Horse camp in Cairo, the flag that was draped over Morant’s coffin and a munitions belt carried by the horses are among the items on display. “This is a display of never-seen Breaker Morant memorabilia and people won’t be disappointed at having the opportunity to see these items here in Seville,” Mr Aulich said. Admission includes morning tea and a commemorative gift. Bookings close on Wednesday, 12 July. For bookings and further information visit www.trybooking.com/book/event?eid=285095&
As the temperatures plummet, spare a thought for those surrendered feathered, furry or scaly friends who rely on the kindness of the community to keep them warm. That kindness is coming from a group of resident senior women at Healesville Holmwood Aged Care who are working hard to make blankets and animal pouches for the unclaimed, surrendered, lost and stray pets being housed at Animal Aid in Coldstream in the Yarra Ranges. Animal Aid relies on this type of community assistance, with the organisation caring for well over 1000 animals including dogs, cats, even horses and goats. While the Women from Holmwood won’t be knitting anything big enough for the horses, the blankets are utilised to help keep the cats and dogs warm during the winter months. Community Engagement manager Elle Ammann said they relied heavily on this type of community assistance. “As an open door shelter, we never turn away an animal in need,”
Ms Ammann said. “The items so lovingly produced by the ladies at Holmwood Aged Care help to nurture our beloved animals.” The residents at Holmwood Aged Care, have taken to the ‘Woolworks’ program with great enthusiasm, and resident Evelyn Stillwell said she loved ‘catching up with the other ladies at the weekly knitting group.’ “We work on knitting squares or patches and then a helper assists in piecing them together to create blankets or animal pouches - it’s a real labour of love,” she said. The recipients, mainly dogs and cats, are tough on their blankets though, with holes being a constant problem. Holmwood residents encourage the community to get behind the project and welcome any donations of spare wool. Alternatively, Elle Ammann also said that any blankets that were warm, clean and in relatively good condition were candidates for donations to Animal Aid and could be dropped off at the Animal Aid office.
Winter is predominantly the time that Animal Aid receives surrendered kittens, and these two kittens are ecstatic with their new handmade blanky to keep them warm over the winter months. 170268 Picture: DEREK SCHLENNSTEDT

Big issue for meeting By Kath Gannaway Yarra Ranges Council has flagged a public meeting for a proposed $4.4 million commercial and residential development in Healesville. The application would see a five-level development including four retail/commercial spaces and 16 apartments at 165175 Maroondah Highway. The site is the remaining section of the former Healesville Building Supplies land on the corner of Church and River streets, abutting the proposed Aldi supermarket.
Land development consultants Millar Merrigan submitted an application to Yarra Ranges Council on behalf of the developer in November last year and is expected to go before Yarra Ranges councillors soon. A council spokesperson confirmed that 16 objections had been received to date, six more than is required to trigger a full council consideration of the application. As required, the application was advertised through a signboard on the site, with surrounding properties notified by
mail and with a public notice in the Mail newspaper. Yarra Ranges Council Director of Social and Economic Development Ali Wastie said a public consultation meeting would be held in the near future giving where community members would be invited to inspect planning documents and make submissions. While submissions will be received until the matter is heard by the council, Ms Wastie said they encourage residents to make submissions as soon as possible so their concerns can be addressed by the
council and/or by the applicant. One of the issues raised following the Aldi application, which is now the subject of two VCAT appeals against Yarra Ranges Council’s approval, was the height of the building which exceeded the 7.5 metre guidelines. At its highest point on River Street, the apartment/retail complex would be more than double the 7.5 metre guideline. The planning application can be viewed at Yarra Ranges Council’s Healesville Link, or online.
Cheap cars take it to the lunacy limit By Derek Schlennstedt Like an episode of bush mechanics, The 2017 Shitbox Rally mixed cheap cars, isolated bumpy roads and of course various unorthodox techniques to fix mechanical problems. The Mail spoke with Paul Van De Ven, who reflected on the rally that saw him and his son Bradley travel over 4652kms, from Melbourne to Adelaide, and then to Cairns. “It’s idiocy and lunacy all put together that somehow works in the shitbox rally ... Lions dinner presents junior club certificates Lions officials, staff and parents attended a dinner at the Healesville RSL on Wednesday 21 June to present Leo Club members with membership certificates and badges. The dinner also saw the official presentation of the Leo Certificate of Organisation presented to inaugural Leo President Jinja Shub. With the Lions celebrating its 100th anniversary since its formation, the dinner was attended by Lions District Centenary Chairman Kumar Swaminathan, Victorian Leo Coordinator Les Harrison, and Lions 2015 1st Vice District Governor Elect Laurie Cooper who inducted the 12 new Leo Club members and installed the club office bearers. Lions Club Coordinator of Healesville Lesley Grigg said: “The dinner went well and was enjoyed by all.”
The Leo Club was formed on Wednesday 10 May this year, courtesy of a new partnership between Healesville High School and the Lions Club. The Leo Club meets twice a month at Healesville High School working with Year 7 to 9 students to help improve their teamwork and social skills, team them how to problem solve and build their selfesteem. Leo Club members choose their own projects and causes as they involve themselves in school and extended community work. Lesley Grigg said the Leo Club can provide many benefits to young people. “The club enables young people to build community awareness,” she said. “It also enables them to improve their social skills as well as run meetings.” For a detailed look at the Leo Club rationale, visit www.lionsclubs.org.au.

Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol has assisted an elderly gentleman after he nearly choked on his dentures. The 67-year old man from Gladstone Park began choking on part of his denture while parked at the Yarra Glen Service station at 9.30am on 9 June. Brad Raaymakers and colleague Tom Juric from the Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol had pulled over a speeding caravan opposite the service station when they were confronted by a distressed Taiwanese lady who said that her husband ‘had swallowed a tooth’. Constable Raaymakers kept watch over the elderly man ensuring that he was able to keep breathing until ambulance services arrived. “A distressed lady who didn’t speak much English came and told us her husband had swallowed a tooth,” said Raaymakers, on his first day as a constable. “He could breathe, but was obviously having a lot of trouble breathing. “I kept him calm and kept him breathing and reclined the seat in the car so he was leaning back more as well as ensuring he didn’t talk too much.”
Operation to nab errant drivers Police have pulled over 137 vehicles during Operation Panther which is targeting drivers travelling to the snowfields. The operation has been running for the last two weekends. A total of 69 offences were handed out including three for unlicensed vehicles, eight in relation to unregistered vehicles and 36 offences for speeding. Yarra Ranges Highway patrol also tested four people for illicit drugs, and all four returned a positive reading.
Cyclists urged to take care Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol is urging cyclists to ride carefully and use bright colours and lights to help them be seen by motorists. It comes after a cyclist riding along Sherbrooke Road in Kallista towards Monbulk Road, was involved in a collision with a car turning into a car park. Sergeant Graeme Rust at Lilydale Highway Patrol said the area attracted large groups of riders and they needed to take care on the weekends when the traffic was busy. “There are a lot of areas that because of overhanging trees and shade make it hard for motorists to see cyclists,” he said. “Bright clothing or having small lights on during the day can help them be seen by motorists and improve their safety.”

The desexing difference Animal
aid Mark Menze Animal Aid CEO
We can hardly believe it is already July. At Animal Aid, July means National Desexing Month; a nationwide initiative encouraging all pet owners to make the right decision and desex their pets. Each year Animal Aid desexes more than 1200 homeless animals through our welfare program; these animals are stray, unwanted or abandoned.
As animal welfare advocates, it is one of our most important missions to help decrease the numbers of unplanned and unwanted litters of cats and dogs. It is so important that the cycle of breeding is broken, particularly that of cats as they can become pregnant from just four months of age, and while they still have kittens in tow. Desexing one cat can prevent 370,000 from being born in a seven-year time period. As we are approaching the long breeding season in the warmer months, there has never been a better time to desex your pet. We have had over 900 kittens come into our shelters over the past 12 months; pet owners play a key role in preventing unwanted kittens and puppies. Desexing your pet saves lives! Desexing provides many benefits to both owners and companion animals.
Cats and dogs are less likely to stray and mark their territory in and around your house. They are less likely to be injured fighting, to contract diseases and more likely to live long healthy lives. They are often more relaxed and affectionate and, generally, live longer and happier lives. As an extra incentive to desex, the Animal Aid Vet Clinic is participating in National Desexing Month this July, we are offering significantly discounted desexing fees for cats and dogs of up to 30 per cent discount. Animal Aid works tirelessly to desex, rehabili-
tate and rehome unwanted animals but unfortunately there are many animals that don’t make it to animal shelters. They are abandoned to live and breed on the streets, around shopping centres, industrial complexes and in the wild. To find out more, or take advantage of our 30 per cent discount on desexing procedures during July, call the Animal Aid Veterinary Clinic on (03) 9739 0500 or visit www.animalaid.org.au. Help us break the cycle. Desex your pets.

Plan makes a statement By Kath Gannaway A Localised Planning Statement (LPS) for Yarra Ranges now rests with the minister for planning after being adopted by Yarra Ranges Council in June. The LPS has had a long and at times rocky road through council, with the wording around a ‘sustainable forest industry’ and inclusion of a History of the Regional Strategy Plan two areas of contention. The purpose of the LPS is to provide planning policy to support the protection of the unique features of Yarra Ranges region and as a guide for any proposed change to the planning scheme.
The Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges is one of four key tourism areas identified as of unique value to Victoria, deemed by the State Government to require special treatment. The key policies are to contain urban development, conserve rural land for agriculture and other non-urban uses and to protect biodiversity and significant landscapes. A Community Reference Group formed in 2015 to produce the document covered aspects as diverse as environment and heritage to community safety, economic development and utilities. Don Valley member of the CRG, Rick Houlihan, spoke in support of the
motion to adopt the LPS at the meeting in Warburton on 27 June. Speaking as an individual member of the group, but not on behalf of the group, he said lengthy discussions had taken place on the 44 submissions received. Cr Tony Stevenson moved to adopt the document, saying it was a high level statement that was exemplary for its support of the Yarra Ranges region and its future. “What we’re seeing here is the culmination of a thorough process, a great deal of engagement with the broader community, the Community Reference Group who have provided valuable input, and other stakeholders.
Cr Mike Clarke opposed the motion saying it was an important document and that council should get it right. “There’s an opportunity to improve the wording slightly ... (there are) important matters that were left out,” he said. Cr Tim Heenan said he had issues with the statement’s take on forest policies. Referencing the statement, he said “Ensure forested areas are managed to be compatible with the protection of water resources - not happening; forest value - not happening; landscape and long-term protection of biodiversity not happening. Cr Stevenson pointed out that the
Regional Strategy Plan has the capacity to deal with forest policy. “The Local Planning Statement needs to be consistent with the Regional Strategy Plan; they need to work hand in glove with each other,” he said. “This document has had a thorough working over; not everybody got everything they wanted, but the intent of what most people is reflected in this document.” Councillors Stevenson, Cox, Child, McAllister, Higgins and Avery voted in favour, with councillors Clarke, Heenan and Cliff against. The document will go to the State Planning Minister, Richard Wynne, for approval.
Donations help sporting clubs kick goals all round By Kath Gannaway
Morton said the support of organisations such as Rotary was important to their club, and to all sporting clubs. “Running community sporting clubs depends on many people giving of their time and effort, and money,” Ms Morton said. “Our coaches committee and parents already contribute so much; this donation means less extra work on fund-raising we need to do. “It means more time for us to focus on running the club and providing opportunities to our members. It’s so greatly appreciated.” She said for the soccer club, the donation would help with equipment costs and help to keep costs down for the families involved.

Seven Healesville sporting clubs received a financial boost at the Rotary Club of Healesville’s June dinner meeting. The dinner was part of the club’s annual distribution of funds from Rotary activities and events held during the year. Healesville’s pony, cricket, swimming, soccer, football netball and tennis clubs and the Yarra Glen Junior Football Club shared a pool of $7500, with the money going to support a wide range of projects from new uniforms and equipment to a television for performance review. Rotary’s director of Community
Services, Dr Ian Tinney thanked the Rotary team behind the successful Dog’s Day Out event which, he said, raised “a whole pot of money” that they were able to share around the community. He said Rotary was very keen on supporting the health of the community as a whole and added that keeping people fit was an important way of achieving that. “Sports clubs are an integral part of any community, and certainly that's the case in Healesville and Yarra Glen. “If we didn’t support such an important part of the community, I think we would be missing out,” Dr Tinney said. Barry always delivered News of the death of wellknown Healesville resident Barry Odgers came as a shock to the Healesville community. Mr Odgers passed away on 28 May, at the age of 71 after a long and difficult battle with cancer. A battle which Sandra Odgers, who had been married to Barry for 50 years, said he fought with until the very end. A private person Barry spent much of his time at home, but was well-known because of the paper delivery run which he did in Healesville. It was when he began to deliver the Mail newspaper and pamphlets, that he found delight in greeting the various dogs he would meet on his round. For 15 years Barry delivered papers and pamphlets to houses on his scooter, and if there was ever anyone who knew every dog in Healesville, it would have been Barry. Nearly every day for 15 years Barry would ride on his scooter doing his round - travelling 35 kilometres to Healesville Sanctuary and back again. “He always used the bike.” That bike would do 35 kilometres to the sanctuary and then back again,” Sandra said. Often on his round Barry would bring nibbles for the
dogs and even when he became sick he would still endeavour to go on his round so his ‘friends’ wouldn’t miss him. “He’d go around feeding all the dogs,” Sandra said. “He still wanted to go see the dogs, so he’d spend his money buying dog biscuits and he’d still do his rounds up until the beginning of March.” Des Harvey, who managed the paper distribution, said Barry often joked that ‘the dogs would miss him if he finished’. “We used to joke that the scooter knew the round and all that Barry had to do was put the paper in the letterbox,” Des said. No matter the weather, Barry would go on his rounds, braving winter rain and wind to say hello to his four-legged friends who would wait patiently to greet him. Often there would be nine or 10 stacks of papers and pamphlets with around 300 in each stack - this would take Barry three hours to deliver and sometimes Sandra or their daughter, Elizabeth would help. “He’d pack up five stacks of pamphlets on his bike and it didn’t matter if it was raining, he’d say he’s got to go do the pamphlets.” “He’d have to come back and get more pamphlets - on his own it would probably take him
three hours because he’d talk to the dogs.” “I would help him sometimes but he reckoned he could do it faster than me,” Sandra joked. Barry and Sandra moved to Healesville in 1972 and all four of their daughters grew up in the area. Des said he would miss Barry and the witty repartee the two shared. “Even though I no longer manage the paper distribution, I will miss the cheeky chirps that he would come out with every week,” he said. The Odgers family hope to spread his ashes on Mount Riddell, where Barry used to work when they first came to Healesville. “We are going to take him to Mount Riddell and scatter the ashes there, in the spring there, and we have a plaque that we’ll put on the tree up there. “When we first came to Healesville he had three months working there with forestry and one part he found was bare, so he replanted all the trees there,” Sandra said. He will be missed by residents and canines alike, and is remembered as a animal lover who always had time to visit the many dogs around Healesville.

Open for fresh new talent By Kath Gannaway An open mic competition in Healesville aims to discover new talent and provide opportunities for regular performance before a live audience. Two of Healesville’s best-known young musicians, Marlee Nebauer and Ash King, host the open mic competition at Herd Bar and Grill and invite musicians, poets, storytellers and other performers to the stage over winter. Healesville’s Ben Mooney was first on stage on Wednesday night (6 July) and admitted to having a few pre-performance nerves. The 23-year-old’s approach to his music is as a song-maker rather than a songwriter. The lyrics to his songs are not written or recorded. “The words come of the top of my head ... I can do that and I like doing it that way,” Ben said. Delivered in the moment, and with
a powerful voice, each performance is unique. He said the open mic was a comfortable place for people to perform. “It’s a great atmosphere; you meet lots of musician and people enthused by the music,” he said. “It’s great to hear people talk about it in such a way that shows how passionate they are about the music.” Herd owners Sean Lee and John Knoll said the open mic was designed to foster the confidence and stage time of local artists who with music venues less available than down the line, may not maintain regular performance opportunities. The open mic runs fortnightly on Wednesday nights leading to a grand final on 30 August. The winner will have the opportunity to record at The Aviary Recording Studio in Melbourne with prizes for second and third placegetters. The next open mic is on Wednesday 19 July from 7pm to 11pm.

Second chances at soccer sale Healesville's very own Peter Wadham is producing an album that embodies the Laos Culture. into rhythms and melodies. The hour-long album has taken Peter nearly 2000 hours to produce and includes various nature sounds to capture the essence of Laos. “I love the Earth, and love creating music that’s different. I want to give people a new experience, a new way to feel connection with the Earth,” Peter said.
Peter put out a crowdfunding appeal to help produce the album and a percentage of royalties will be given to the Laotian singers and their communities. He has already been able to send some funds back to Laos to help one of the singers pay for his children’s schooling. To find out more about Peet Wonderfeel and the album visit http://bit.ly/wonderlao or http:// wonderfeel.com.
Spider-Man’s web of interest By Seth Hynes Spider-Man: Homecoming (M) Starring Tom Holland, Michael Keaton and Robert Downey Jr After his movie-stealing cameo in Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man fully and triumphantly enters the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Superpowered high-school student Peter Parker (Tom Holland), aka Spider-Man, is desperate to prove his worth and join the Avengers, and sees his chance after discovering salvager Adrian Toomes’ (Michael Keaton) illegal arms business. Spider-Man: Homecoming is a compelling coming-of-age story without retreading the title
hero’s well-known origins. Holland was born to play Peter Parker; he conveys the perfect note of bravado, humility and sweet-natured awkwardness at all times. Interspersed amid Peter’s serious supervillain investigation are more ligh-thearted sub-plots involving Peter’s family and academic lives, with plenty of clever, natural humour. But Homecoming effectively balances these light and serious elements, drawing relatable parallels between Peter’s double-life and the secrets, responsibilities and desire for acceptance all teenagers have. The thrilling action scenes are full of creative physical comedy and showcase Peter’s
nimble physicality. Keaton delivers his trademark dry wit and scrappy charm as Toomes, aka the Vulture, portraying a surprisingly sympathetic villain. Toomes is an industrious, honourable working-class family man who is tired of being trampled on by big business and bureaucracy; you find yourself supporting his intentions, just not his criminal methods, as he makes a living selling reverseengineered alien weaponry on the black market. Spider-Man: Homecoming is an exciting, engaging and endearing look at adolescence through the lens of superhero antics.
Healesville Soccer Club is opening the doors to its new club rooms for a two-day Second Time Around Sale on 15 and 16 July. Club members are having fun sorting donations of some great pre-loved items for what will be a major fund-raiser for the club. Club Registrar Sera Blair said the Second Time Around Sale was a great opportunity for people to donate and recycle unwanted items and to get a bargain with funds going
towards running costs for the new club rooms and to continue with extra fitness and exercise programs offered this season. Donations of items such as clothing, books, home wares, sports equipment, baby gear, small furniture items and other saleable goods will be very welcome and can be dropped off on Thursdays and Fridays between 6pm and 8pm at the clubrooms at the Don Road Complex. Call Sera on 0418 258 808 if donations are unable to be delivered.
There will be lots of bargains on offer between 10am and 4pm on the Saturday and Sunday as well as the opportunity to look over the new club rooms, enjoy a coffee from the canteen and take in a game of soccer on the oval. The club has 10 teams from Under 9s Mini-Roos through to Ladies’, Men’s and Masters competition level with the seniors playing on the Saturday, and juniors on the Sunday.

A fascinating album that explores the sounds of Laos is being produced by a Healesville musician. Peter Wadham travelled to the remote South-East Asian country in 2017 and experienced a journey that influenced him to create an album focusing on Laos’ diverse singing culture. One song recorded inside a cave produces an incredible sensation with the singer’s voice echoing through the cavern. “I was taken on a small tour with people, and the tour guide himself started singing in the cave, his voice was so pure and reverberated in the cave; it was so rich and it overwhelmed me, and I asked if I could come back and record him,” Peter said. Peter has more than 20 years’ experience producing music and has developed his own style of music-making called ‘organic electronic’ which involves the use of synthesizers and recording sounds through a microphone that he carefully blends

Double-up in the top spot By Cameron Hutchison The weekend saw the last game in Round 11 for Division 1 being played and Round 12 for Division 2. The Under 18s had a weekend off and more shuffling of the ladders occurred because of the weekend’s results. After 11 Rounds in Division 1, Olinda and Wandin share top spot with Healesville just two points behind in third, Woori Yallock in fourth and Upwey 10 points behind in fifth. Second Division has seen some big moves with Seville and Belgrave fighting it out for top spot this week, Powelltown is clear by one win in third, Yarra Glen finds itself in fourth and only one game ahead of fifth-placed Alexandra. The Under 18s are playing for positions in the top eight, while Emerald and Mt Evelyn look like they have a stronghold on positions one and two. Wandin sits third with Healesville in fourth, while Upwey is clear in fifth and Warburton, Woori Yallock and Gembrook make up the rest of the eight. Division 1 Netball: Olinda is comfortably sitting on top with Wandin six points behind in second place. Woori Yallock is hot on their heels in third, with Monbulk and Warburton sharing fourth spot. Belgrave is still undefeated on top in Division 2 with Yarra Glen in second spot. Yarra Junction is just behind in third with Powelltown and Yea making up the five. Division 1 Seniors Football Olinda Ferny Creek 11.9.75 d Upwey Tecoma 4.19.43 Olinda still sits on top of the ladder after their win on Saturday while Upwey are in fifth position only one game clear of the sixth-placed Mt Evelyn. Olinda got away to a good start kicking 4.3 and keeping Upwey to only four behinds. Upwey fought back in the second quarter kicking 4.3 to 2.2, meaning that the margin was only 10 points at half-time. The second half was all Olinda’s as it kicked 5.4 to Upwey’s 13 behinds. Dan Waters ended up with 3.7 for the day and things would have been completely different if accuracy was the name of the game. Olinda Ferny Creek Best: M. Wright (1 goal), D. Rohrmann (2 goals), C. Horner (2 goals), T. Millwood, R. Cottam-Starkey (2 goals), J. Charge Upwey-Tecoma Best: S. Dawson, D. Waters (3 goals), R. Hannagan, J. Hevern, K. Grenda, J. Thornton could only manage one behind in the third quarter to Kinglake’s 2.3, extending the lead to 40 points, and the game was sealed. To
Thornton’s credit it outscored Kinglake in the last and reduced the final margin to 36 points.

Big grand final replay By Peter Douglas and Effie Caloutas North Melbourne champion and AFL games record holder Brent ‘Boomer’ Harvey will be special guest at the Healesville versus Olinda clash this Sunday 16 July. As part of the WorkSafe Game of the Month initiative for season 2017, Harvey will join Hawthorn legend Peter Knights in a marquee occasion at the Don Road Sporting Complex. The occasion starts at midday; the senior match kicks off at 2.30pm, with the WorkSafe rounds traditionally drawing large crowds to the matches. Not to mention the clash takes place against last year’s grand final combatants, which are both fierce rivals and in stellar form. The match is one of eight WorkSafe Games planned across Victoria, with the initiative - now in its 15th year - highlighting traditional grudge matches between country football and netball club rivals. WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country partners with Netball Victoria to bring some of football’s and netball’s biggest names to the matches to meet the locals and share their sporting stories with currentday AFL player Ambassadors, football personalities. Spectators can enjoy the local atmosphere with a host of family friendly activities including football and netballthemed inflatables, face painting and giveaways, plus see your face on the big screen with the WorkSafe LED truck scoreboard. Another highlight is the National Anthem prior to the game sung by a local identity and the post-match presentations

second position, winning all of their past five matches. Healesville is coming off one week’s rest and a 114-37 thumping of Warburton-Millgrove after the split round in Round 11.
Hubbard hits true WARBURTON GOLF WEDNESDAY Stroke and M. McGrann Bag day - On a difficult day for scoring, Allan Hubbard returned from a break to score a solid nett 70. In winning the day, Allan now qualifies for the Bag day play-off in November. The runner-up was Alan Johnston with a 71, on a fourway countback. Balls only went to 71. The daily NTP winners were John Wheatley 9th, Crossy Senior 15th and to one of the club's juniors, Liam Kay 17th. John Wheatley also had an eagle on the 8th - well done. SATURDAY Stableford: A Grade was taken out by Tony Bickley, with an impressive 39 points. Good work, Tony. B Grade went to Barry Maltman, who accrued 39 points also. Balls went down to 34. NTPs were won by Jas Kennedy 3rd, Steuart Hawke 5th, Tony Bickley 9th, Cross Senior 12th and Peter Bell 15th. Runner-up was Paul Mason with 37 points. Paul is our Greens Superintendent and he plays off ‘scratch’, or none, so he shot a 68 ‘off the stick’ to accumulate those points. This is the best gross score for many months on the course, and was achieved in the difficult winter conditions. A terrific effort, Mase!
