■ High security as Islamic State target prepares for tour…
Hope Pope visit Pope Tawadros II - branded as the ‘Pope of Hope’ is set to receive the keys to the City of Casey while visiting the region’s 2000-strong Coptic diaspora. The religious leader who has preached peace while under violent attack in Egypt will be making his first visit to Australia later this year, with tight security precautions. His Holiness is expected to perform a consecration service at St Mina and St Marina Coptic Orthodox Church in Hallam and to lay a foundation stone at a nearby elderly hostel in September. Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said councillors had unanimously voted to bestow the city’s highest honour to His Holiness.
The vote was pulled into closed council at the 4 July meeting due to security concerns ahead of the visit, Cr Aziz said. Only on Palm Sunday, 9 April, the Pope escaped unscathed when a cathedral in Egypt was bombed just after his service and 17 people were killed. ISIS took responsibility for that attack. “The fact that those creatures of ISIS state that Coptic Christians are their favourite pursuit demonstrates how barbaric they are,” Cr Aziz said. “We have been working very co-operatively with Australian Federal Police and Victoria Police to ensure the visit is secure.” Cr Aziz described the visit as “massive” for the hundreds of Coptic parishioners in Casey. His Holiness was an inspiration, who even in

the most trying of situations delivered a message of ‘forgive your enemy’, he said. After the burning of 50 churches, Pope Tawadros II had said if there were no more churches, Coptic Christians would pray with their brothers and sisters in the mosques. “He said: ‘A nation without churches is a lot better than churches without a nation’,” Cr Aziz recalled. “It was absolutely amazing from a man under so much pressure.” Professor Greg Barton, a global Islamic politics expert at Deakin University, said the security precautions were necessary. The concerns were the “relentless round” of sectarian violence against Copts by groups such
as the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, as well as the executions by ISIS. The Palm Sunday atrocity was followed by the mass killing of Coptic pilgrims in May. “I’m not surprised that they’re taking a careful approach,” Professor Barton said of the Australian visit. “That means there’s a possibility that some people in the broader (community) of non-Copts will be disruptive but also some with sympathies with ISIS might try to be a hero or a martyr in their own eyes.” Father Abanoub Attalla, of the St Mina and St Marina church, said there was great excitement ahead of His Holiness’s first visit to Australia. Hope Pope visit as security steps up From page 1 “The Pope is always loved by the people.” As the leader of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria, the Pope was regarded as a “peacemaker” who held a weekly sermon for thousands of worshippers, Fr Attalla said. “He’s renowned for leading the Christians in Egypt and being a significant part in promoting peace in Egypt.” The Pope had received keys to cities as well as honorary degrees all over the world, Fr Attalla said. During his Australian trip, the Pope is expect-

ed to meet with various heads of churches as well as Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, and other political leaders. Fr Attalla said the church had no knowledge of any local security threats. “We have no news of anything internally. It’s hard for us to know whether there are external threats. “There have been threats everywhere that (His Holiness) has gone, even visiting other countries overseas. “We’re awaiting the intelligence people from police. It’s always changing, though.”

Scores on Parliament’s board for club upgrade Mr Hollis said the club hoped the new scoreboard plus a surface upgrade would attract new players. “The demographics of our area, we’re probably a little bit challenged,” he said. “The time commitment to cricket these days seems a bit hard for people, so we are battling a bit with our playing numbers. “We are down across the board, both juniors and seniors. “I think it’s just reflective of the amount of time people have in their lives. “We’re trying to be a bit more involved in the community to ensure everyone knows that we’re here. “We are the biggest sporting club in Endeavour Hills, pretty much, with great facilities. “We were established in 1978, so we’re coming up to our 40th year.”
Readers join the fold as Games stars fight violence Casey Cardinia Libraries have joined in the celebration of the 2018 Commonwealth Games being held in Australia by inviting people to help them fold paper stars. The stars form part of a wider One Million Stars initiative, with each star representing a peaceful statement against all forms of violence in our communities. The project invited members of the community to come together peacefully and engage in conversations about the effects of violence and ways to end violent behaviour. Hampton Park Library set an ambitious target of folding 10,000 of the multi-coloured stars with help from other library branches and local schools. “We have just over 9000 stars here,” Hampton Park Library officer Tracy Howard said. “We extend thanks to staff participating at our other branch libraries in Doveton, Endeavour Hills, Pakenham, Narre Warren and the mobile library.” “Thanks also to Hallam Senior Secondary College students and teachers who made another 3000, while Berwick Lodge Primary contributed 90.” Casey Cardinia Libraries CEO Chris Buckingham said the project was a great way for the libraries to demonstrate their commitment to supporitng the end to violence in the community. “In a region where family violence is far too high, we have a responsibility to make sure that people who are at risk feel safe in our libraries and can access support services,” Mr Buckingham said. “Every one of us knows someone who has been adversely affected by family violence and how we choose to respond to family violence will have a direct impact in our community,” he said. “Libraries have a vital role to play in providing safe places where people can gather, share knowledge and have conversations.” The stars will be shipped off to the Gold Coast to form part of the art installation displayed during the Commonwealth Games next year. “This has been a great project allowing the community to work with us; those 10,000 stars seemed like a huge amount when we first started,” Mr Buckingham said.

Police charged a 21-year-old Berwick driver for allegedly dragging a policeman along an Eumemmerring road. It’s alleged that police intercepted a vehicle on Princes Highway near Lace Street just before 12.15pm on Tuesday 11 July, but as they approached, the driver tried to flee the scene and dragged one officer more than 30 metres. Police charged the man with conduct endangering life and failing to render assistance. He will appear in the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 1 September.

A Doveton man is without his car after police caught him driving while disqualified. Casey Highway Patrol officers nabbed the 45-yearold in Hampton Park about 6.10am on Thursday 13 July as part of Operation Visible. They impounded his car for 30 days at a cost of $983.
A would-be thief aimed a shotgun at four people walking through a Dandenong park. Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Sergeant Dean Hayes said the friends left a party on Potter Street and entered Hemmings Park on Princes Highway just after 1am on Saturday 8 July. A man carrying the gun approached and pointed the weapon at the group, and demanded their phones and wallets. One of his victims refused and the bandit ran from the scene. A local MP has gone in to bat for Endeavour Hills Cricket Club. In Parliament on 7 June, Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams asked Sports Minister John Eren to “approve funding for improvements to the facilities and infrastructure of the Endeavour Hills Cricket Club”. Specifically, the club is seeking funding to install an electronic scoreboard at Sydney Pargeter Reserve. Ms Williams told Parliament that the club was in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association (VSDCA), the second-tier turf cricket competition in Victoria, and was the second most senior club in the region. “But, unfortunately, their facilities are in need of an upgrade,” she said. “Their facilities are used by people of all cul-
tures and backgrounds, and the club actively fosters a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. “We know that local sporting clubs strengthen individuals and strengthen our communities. “They are places where people from all walks of life come together to share a mutual love of the game. “In a highly multicultural electorate like Dandenong it is clear that sporting clubs provide a connection between cultures, ages and sexes, offering an inclusive and constructive social outlet.” Endeavour Hills Cricket Club vice president Tom Hollis said the club was confident the scoreboard would be installed in September despite a funding shortfall. “We haven’t got it all, we do need a bit more,” he said. “It’s going to be a great plus for the club. “That is going to be positioned on our main cricket ground, for the seniors.”

20 years ago 14 July 1997 Migrants shocked at apathy The organisers of the multicultural celebration could have done more to win over the crowd, which protested outside the Town Hall on Monday night, according to the co-ordinator of the Springvale Indochinese Mutual Assistance Association (SICMAA) Mr Phong Nguyen. Mr Nguyen said there had been no communication between the protest groups outside the Town Hall and council leading up to Monday night. “If the multicultural concert had been held in the middle of the protest crowd, it might have had a pacifying effect before those in
the meeting started to emerge,” Mr Nguyen said. He criticised the media for stressing the negative and sensational aspects and ignoring the multicultural celebration. Mr Nguyen said the feedback he had received from the Indo Chinese community after Monday night was one of shock and disappointment; shock because of the violent scenes and disappointment that the council did not use the word ‘protest’ to describe and promote its ‘celebration’. He said many people went there to protest against what Pauline Hanson was saying and they felt that the council could have made its own protest more clear.
5 years ago 16 July 2012 Patrol’s right on track Armed guards are set to be rolled out at Springvale and Noble Park railway stations by
October after initial success at Dandenong, said a leading police officer in the region. Inspector Bruce Kitchen of Greater Dandenong police said the introduction of up to three protective service officers from 6pm until the last train had markedly improved public safety at Dandenong station. For three consecutive weekends last month there had been no robberies or assaults at the station and its surrounds during the PSO shifts. “It’s a massive reduction in crime. Before the PSOs started we could have half a dozen incidents a night on weekends, plus the ones where people wouldn’t ring the police,” Inspector Kitchen said. “The fact the PSOs are there is a deterrent. The community are a lot safer around the railway station, especially in the twilight hours when the PSOs are on.” Crime, in general, had reduced 80 per cent in June, Inspector Kitchen said.
The better angels of our nature As a young person, I’ve had my fill of the bad news. I don’t have to turn on the TV or read the newspaper to get it, the bad news is plastered on the many faces I pass in the street. It’s in the pungent smell of fast food and the painful sound of disingenuous advertisements. The bad news is everywhere, it pervades the beauty of the world, swallowing its trees. Grey buildings stand in their place. It’s in the gum on the ground and the brightly-coloured packets of chips that dance in the wind. The bad news looms over us like the shadow of a tsunami, the uncertainty of the future causes vertigo as we look down under the tightrope humanity is walking. But I’ve had enough of the bad news. How about some good news? It appears as though everything is in chaos, that humanity doesn’t stand a chance. And yet most people are kind and pretty easy to get along with.

It still stands true that every person, even the most tyrannical dictator, began his life as a vulnerable child. Are things really so bad? Could it be that we are mistaken? What about the good news? The younger generation has been estimated to be the most tolerant generation yet - 84 per cent of millennials agree that making a positive difference in the world is more important to them than professional recognition and 92 per cent believe that business success should be measured by more
Our priority is you
than profit. While only 19 per cent of millennials agree with the statement “most people can be trusted”, maybe our generation hasn’t got as much to fear as they initially thought. Our world may be plagued by corporate corruption, our communities may be fractured. But we are in a better position now to make a change than we ever have been before. Sixty-one per cent of millennials are concerned about the welfare of the world and feel a personal responsibility to make a difference. This is the first time in history where we have a global culture, the internet allows for people all across the world to communicate their message in a common language. This is the age of information. Knowledge can be procured literally at the tip of our fingers. Ignorance is dying out, enlightenment is taking its place. And that’s only among millennials.
The scientific revolution continues with new discoveries about the earth and our universe being made every day. The psychological revolution has begun, sociology and psychology are promising fields of science which explore the science of happiness and how we relate to other people. It seems the news isn’t all bad, and perhaps we knew it all along. When we are shown random acts of kindness by strangers, when the bus driver overlooks the fact that we didn’t have any money on our Myki or when the Maccas worker says not to worry about being five cents short, it becomes clear that most human beings have an ineradicable capacity for kindness. It isn’t necessary for humanity to define itself by its worst characteristics, and either way that shouldn’t be the attitude we have going forward, for we will always become what we believe ourselves to be.

Men looking for a shed By Casey Neill The Endeavour Hills Men’s Shed isn’t letting a lack of space hold it back. The group first met in February as a project of the Endeavour Hills Rotary Club and with the support of the City of Casey. It officially incorporated as a separate group in April and welcomes men to socialise, share experiences and learn new skills. Endeavour Hills Men’s Shed president Trevor Ratcliffe said the members were developing community partnerships and supporting community groups. “A lack of workshop space in their current premises means that some of their equipment is in storage,” he said. “The men are looking for a permanent home to set up a full workshop and social facilities and are speaking to the City of Casey about this. “This probably means that the men will need to raise the funds for a new purpose-built facility. “In the meantime, they are very keen to be an important part of the community by supporting other not-for-profit organisations. “Shortage of space does not mean short of initiative.” Mr Ratcliffe said members recently completed their first community project. They knocked apart used pallets in a paddock, and in a member’s carport assembled the planks as a teepee. They delivered the structure to the Good Start Early Learning Centre in Endeavour Hills as a playground addition. “Once a permanent home is found and the shed grows, the range of their hands-on activities will too,” Mr Ratcliffe said. “Already the men are broadening their activities beyond working with wood. These include computers, other practical skills, and interests which will lead to new pursuits.” He said fund-raising barbecues were being organised and excursions were being considered. “They may be new but they are active, eager to find a new home, to grow and to contribute,” he said.
Trevor Ratcliffe, Rudi Oost and Peter Ramsbotham deliver a teepee to learning centre assistant director Anna. Mr Ratcliffe said members went bike riding and walking, enjoyed guest speakers and acquired workshop equipment. “But there is no end to the range of potential activities - social, environmental, active or passive recreation,” he said. “They are all just waiting for two or more to get together and begin.” The men meet at the Essex Park Community Place, Essex Park Drive, Endeavour Hills. Follow the group on Facebook, visit endeavourhillsmensshed.blogspot.com/p/supporters. htm or call Mr Ratcliffe on 9700 5061 or 0428 472 030.

Victory on the brink of defeat A soccer team helping young Afghan refugees now needs a hand to continue its positive work. The Afghan Victory football club needs to raise $20,000 to keep running for another year, and is looking for corporate sponsorship as a more permanent solution. The side has cracked $10,000 in donations to an online appeal. The cash will cover jerseys, soccer balls, refreshments, venue hire, registration fees and travel. Zakarya Shojaie, himself a refugee, founded the club, and for nearly four years invested more than a third of his own earnings to finance the teams. But he was recently retrenched and can no longer afford it. “I used to see these kids wandering around Dandenong Plaza and the train station with nothing to do,” he said. “I thought, no - that’s not good, that’s not fair... to spend their life like this... I feared they may get into drugs and alcohol. “So I decided to start the soccer team to get them away from all those things, and to make their future bright. “In our first week, we had 25 kids sign up!” More than 50 young people have been involved in the club, and it’s become a family for many. Young refugees are often placed together in community houses, and many are students who’ve lost their parents to conflict. The club gives them a purpose and helps them to develop confidence, focus, friendship, teamwork and a will to win. Afghan Victory has a men’s under-17s and under-25s sides and a women’s under-19s team. All three practise two days a week and play other registered clubs around Melbourne on weekends. They’ve won several trophies and interstate matches, and the women’s team is the current league champion. Visit chuffed.org/project/afghan-victorysoccer-club to donate.

For the first time, this year’s Open House Melbourne will share Greater Dandenong’s history. The council is opening several buildings for the event, and shared a few snippets with the Journal ahead of the 29 and 30 July tours and lectures. City of Greater Dandenong community programs officer Bridget Flood said that rumour has it, early Dandenong identities William Lonsdale and George Langhorne never got along. The streets named in their honour run parallel, never meeting. Ms Flood said the Drum Theatre clock had never worked properly. “The night that it was unveiled it didn’t stop chiming. It chimed 117 times,” she said.

A seagull plague has descended on central Dandenong. Greater Dandenong Council’s acting city design, planning and amenity director John Prendergast said access to food and breeding sites appeared to be the cause. He said the council was advising business owners to remove potential food sources, including waste, and block access to potential breeding areas such as roof spaces. The council is also discouraging the pub-

lic from feeding any birds in public places. Greater Dandenong Council donated $10,000 to the Sri Lankan High Commissioner in Australia for flood relief assistance. At the Monday 10 July council meeting, councillor Tim Dark suggested the donation in response to “widespread devastation” that had killed more than 200 people and displaced 600,000. Keysborough South Action Group is asking for help to update the Google satellite image of the area. “It appears we are under construction rather than showing the extra 300-plus homes,” a post on its Facebook page said. “The suburb filled with houses rather than dirt is a much easier story, to lobby for the primary and secondary schools. “Click on Google, search Keysborough, go to a section of dirt which is actually houses and report as outdated satellite image.” The Journal reported last week that Senior Constable Luke Ilott was attracting attention online with his skateboard skills. The man himself got in touch and explained that he was on patrol and decided to pop into Noble Park Skate Park. “Instead of standing around and just watching I thought I’d ask one of the kids to have a go on his skateboard, show him I am human too and we weren’t there to hassle them,” he said. “Lachie happily handed it over and one of my offsiders decided to film my fancy work. “It was tough with the big boots and gear on but I’ve still got it. “I emailed the video to the boss and suddenly the next day I’m all over Facebook.” The clip on the Victoria Police Facebook page has now attracted more than 81,000 views.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells In its own words, The Escapees Theatre Company has been “on the run” for a decade. What’s left behind from more than 30 shows is a “colourful explosion” of props, costumes, wigs, sets, photos and posters, said company director Alice Scerri. The memorabilia is being exhibited at Hallam Senior College to mark the company’s 10th anniversary. The opening also coincided with the premiere of the play Lemonade, which was written and directed by Lara Chamas and finished its run at the Hallam Community Theatre on 15 July. Ms Scerri said it was a beautiful play about a girl coming to terms with an unpromising diagnosis. “She is going through the stages of grief, trying to come to terms with the news,” Ms Scerri said. “It’s not all sad, though, there’s some comedy in there, too.” The exhibition, A Decade on the Run, is open from 7pm to 9pm until 20 July at the Hallam Community Theatre.

Health jobs drive for new hospital A campaign has begun to recruit more than 200 new caregivers for the new St John of God Berwick Hospital. The existing hospital employs 387 caregivers. These numbers are set to grow once the new hospital, under construction, opens its doors on 18 January 2018. Job opportunities will be advertised from 17 July for four weeks. A registration of interest portal was created on the hospital’s website in late 2016 for those interested in gaining employment. More than 2000 people registered. Acting CEO Lisa Evans said that the recruitment marketing campaign, including social media, radio, print and internal promotions, would capture the essence of what it is to be a caregiver at St John of God Berwick, including the unique sense of compassionate care that the hospital is extremely proud of. She said she hoped that this would assist in attracting a high quality of applicants with the right cultural fit for the organisation. Roles available will include a wide variety of clinical, non-clinical and support vacancies across a variety of days and shifts, including casual. “St John of God Berwick Hospital is an employer of choice with a host of benefits on offer for successful applicants,” Ms Evans said. “Hospital management are pleased to be able to provide such a wealth of new employment opportunities to the local community and to provide the chance for local residents to seek fulfilling and meaningful work closer to home. “Currently more than 70 per cent of our community travel outside the region for employment. “Local councils believe this is having a significant impact on families. In fact, the new hospital will make St John of God Berwick one of the largest employers in the Casey Cardinia region.”
St John of God has launched a recruitment campaign for new staff. New doctors will also be recruited to the new facility with the introduction of new services including an intensive care unit, cardiac care and a cardiac/ vascular catheter laboratory. Over the past 12 months the hospital’s Busi-

ness Development team has engaged with current specialist doctors to identify those who are interested in increasing their work at the hospital. “Discussion with a number of new medical specialists has also occurred and we look forward
to introducing our new doctors to the community,” Ms Evans said. Applicants who require further information or who wish to view employment opportunities should visit sjog.org.au/berwickcareers.

A Dandenong glass recycler will boost its efforts to reduce landfill thanks to a $500,000 grant. Polytrade welcomed Energy, Environment and Climate Change Minister Lily D’Ambrosio and Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams on Wednesday 12 July to celebrate the State Government cash. It was among 15 companies to secure funding for infrastructure projects to help recover valuable resources and turn them into new products. Polytrade will buy new machinery to sort and clean small fractions of glass for re-use. This will allow the business to recover 56,000 tonnes of glass currently sitting in stockpiles plus recover and divert from landfill a further 22,000 tonnes each year. “Some of the items we currently send to landfill contain valuable materials that could be recovered and reused,” Ms Williams said. “By investing in this important infrastructure, we can ensure that these materials are recovered and turned into valuable products, creating economic value for Victoria.

Long serving Patterson Cheney employee Ann Borrowdale has been one of “Patto’s little angels“ for 40 years ... that’s the term she and other warehouse workers used to employ when teasing each other. On 29 June Ann clocked up four decades as one of ‘Patto’s little angels’. She has spent her entire career working in the warehouse of the iconic Dandenong business. Ann makes sure orders for parts are filled correctly and make it undamaged and on time to customers all over country Victoria. On a busy day she can handle up to 50 packages. Fastidious about her work, when she knocks off at night Ann locks away her tape dispensers so they don’t “disappear”. Ann started at Patterson Cheney in 1977 at the age of 21. That same year Australia experienced its worst rail disaster at Grenville near Sydney, Jimmy Carter was US president and Malcolm Fraser was returned for a second term as Prime Minister. She remembers large pipes snaking around the upper walls of the warehouse leading to the telephone room. Ann’s job was to collect orders ready for dispatch. She would wrap the items and place them in tubes. The tubes would be sucked up the pipes and transported to the dispatch area. “Orders would come down to us the same way. One pipe went up, the other went down,“ Ann explained. In those days the warehouse staff often laboured amid a haze of cigarette smoke. “You could smoke just about anywhere,“ Ann remembered. She remembers a supervisor by the name of Merv bending over a crate full of shredded paper, a cigarette hanging from his lips. Miraculously, the paper never caught alight. “No one used to bat an eyelid,“ Ann said. To mark Ann’s four decades of service, manag-

FASTER SELLING HOMES SHOW INCREASED DEMAND The state’s property market continues to perform strongly with homes in regional Victoria taking a median of 55 days to sell in June - 11 days less than the same period last year. New REIV data shows homes in multiple regional towns sold significantly faster in June with the median days on market falling by double-digits over the year. A decline in the number of days a home takes to sell typically indicates increased buyer interest in a particular town or region. In the year to 30 June, the private sale market in the tourist town of Hepburn Springs recorded one of the largest improvements with homes selling in a median of 38 days - 68 days faster than the same period last year. Homes also sold faster in the coastal towns of Barwon Heads and Cowes in a 2 DANDENONG JOURNAL Monday, 17 July, 2017

Kerang in the state’s north also experienced significant improvements over the year with homes spending 77 days on market in June, 37.5 days less than the same month last year. Increased buyer interest was also recorded in Wangaratta and Ocean Grove with homes selling 33 days faster than 2016 figures in a median of 36 and 49 days respectively. Playground offered to a good home homing is an opportunity to further extend its enjoyment for those who may have gone without. “Commercial playground and play equipment itself is really very expensive, which is why a lot of groups or charities don’t have playgrounds,” Ms Murphy said. “So something like this could really be on someone’s wish list in our community.” The playground was removed in 2016 to make way for a new custom built kids’ play space, which came as an addition to the centre’s ambience upgrades. With yet another custom built playground commencing installation and both parents’ rooms beginning renovations at the end of the week, Ms Murphy said the refurbishments will continue to keep families in the community at the forefront of Waverley Garden’s purpose. “A lot of the bigger shopping centres don’t have playgrounds anymore ... where parents or carers can relax with a coffee while the kids have some fun, and I think having two playgrounds is a major point of difference at Waverley Gardens.” Any community groups, not for profit organisations or charity groups that are interested in the playground are invited to contact Waverley Gardens at customerservice@waverleygardens. com.au

Managers of Waverley Garden’s Shopping Centre are currently searching for a new community home for one of their much loved children’s playgrounds. The indoor playground which features two slides, a tic-tac-toe panel, foam climbing ramp, protective netting and a stationary car with an interactive steering wheel, is on offer by Waverley Gardens Centre Manager Belinda Donnelly and Marketing Manager Jodie-Lee Murphy who believe the playground could be of great benefit to a local charity or community group. “We just feel that the people who shop here are so much a part of the community and we value them coming here every day, so instead of selling the playground we thought it would be a great opportunity to provide play equipment to a local group or charity that actually needs it,” Ms Donnelly said. “And it’s in good working use so we’d just rather see somebody from our community get enjoyment out of it.” The playground, which was installed in the food court of Waverley Garden’s Shopping Centre four years ago, was a hit among children aged up to four years old. And with the possibility of it being re-installed within the community, Ms Murphy said its re-

SPORT Williams ready to take big leap By Nick Creely Dandenong Stingrays ruckman Bailey Williams is a high leaping excitement machine who is capable of the extraordinary. Just 17-years-old, Williams doesn’t qualify to be drafted until 2018 but is going to be a name that is spoken about consistently for the next year. Standing at 198cm, Williams has been playing a ruck/ forward role for the ’Rays in 2017 and has averaged a goal a game and over 20 hit outs. His exploits as a bottom-ager in the TAC Cup earnt him a recall to the Vic Country side for the recent National Championships where he competed with the best young and soon to be AFL players in the country. At the National Championships, Williams was ultra-impressive for Country where he used his insane leap and excellent goal nous to kick goals and become one of the dominant ruckman throughout the carnival. Often throughout games, Williams out leapt all the ruckmen in his wake, allowing his midfielders first use of the football. He told the Journal that the experience was a massive thrill and something that will hold him in good stead in the future. “It’s taken a lot of development to step up to the next level - especially nationals as a bottomager. “I’ve been in pretty good form at TAC Cup level and sort of thought that I’d have every chance to get a call-up for Vic Country,” he said. “I played alright in the trial games and it sort of just happened (being selected). I definitely felt like I fit in and didn’t look out of place as a bottom ager - I was pretty comfortable. “I was serviceable throughout the carnival but had there been a few more games I could have done more. I was just starting to get into it all.
Dandenong Stingrays’ Bailey Williams leaps in the ruck in a game earlier this season. 168489 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS “I’ll be ready to go in next year’s carnival. I’ve had a taste and now I know what it takes and looking forward to it all again.”
At 14 years of age, at his school - Westernport Secondary College - Williams’ freakish athleticism hasn’t gone unrewarded.
Kids light up as Melbourne players visit for training Many families braved the cold Sunday morning start on 2 July to head down to Lois Twohig Reserve in Dandenong North for a chance to train locally with a special guest from AFL’s Melbourne Football Club. The North Dandenong Junior Football club (also known as the Sharks) Auskicker program was honoured to receive Joel Smith who has played two matches to date, with many of the club’s enthusiastic Auskickers keen to raise their hands to ask many questions, get pro tips, and get their AFL gear autographed. Smith, 21, is the son of former Dees’ forward Shaun Smith who is famous for a mark taken in 1995 that earned him the title of ‘Mark of the Century’. Shane King, Sharks’ Volunteer Auskick Coach, did a great job running the session and getting the kids involved - ensuring all the club’s Auskickers had a turn to train with Joel and in sharing out give-a-ways to all kids in attendance. With NDJFC President Steve Gillies and NAB AFL Auskick District Manager Ray Spinks meeting and greeting the parents, and being available to answer questions during the session, it was a great opportunity for the enthusiastic youngsters. “It’s always fun to have AFL players around the club as it brings a lot of energy and the Melbourne visit did not disappoint,” Mr Gillies said. “From the star struck eyes amassing to see them, you can see the Auskick kids really enjoy it. “The fun part for me is question time, as you just never know what they’re going to say, full of excitement and laughs - it’s a real highlight for everyone.” The North Dandenong Junior Football Club is a 100 per cent volunteer run organisation that openly welcomes families and volunteers from the local community. If anyone is interested in volunteering and being a part of the club, they can find more details at www.northdandysharks.com.au or email Steve Gillies at president.northdandy@gmail.com. 28 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 17 July, 2017

“I’ve broken a few high jump records in athletics at Westernport, there were few records set by Andrejs Everitt down at Carlton, and I’ve broken everyone one of them,” he said. Although playing predominantly as a ruckman as he continues to grow and develop, Williams has a natural ability to kick goals and clunk big contested marks, and sees himself playing a dual role in the future. “As a junior, I’ve mainly been a forward, but getting older and my body getting a bit bigger and taller, I’ve been able to play a ruck role at a higher level - I enjoy both positions, I’m not overly fussed where I play, to be honest,” he said. “I like to watch the more mobile ruckman in the AFL, like a Paddy Ryder, Nic Naitanui and Brodie Grundy and how they go about it and try and learn off them. “I feel like I’ve always got the edge over my opponent in the ruck, and down forward I’m pretty dangerous too so it’s great. “It’s a confidence thing with me. Earlier this year I doubted myself and probably didn’t want to make many mistakes but as I play more games, things are starting to fall into place confidence wise and with my ability to play those positions.” As for the fortunes of his TAC Cup club, Dandenong Stingrays - he said the best is yet to come and can’t wait to get stuck into the back end of the season. “We’ve played fairly well as a side all year, with some stiff losses, but we have to forget about that now and keep playing good footy,” he said. “The season has been up and down for all sides. “The side we have in now, I don’t see us being beaten very often at all - we haven’t had a full team all year and to get those guys in will be awesome.”
Star players in for Asian Cup Three Dandenong Rangers’ superstars have been selected to represent Australia at the upcoming FIBA Asia Cup, with Sara Blicavs, Steph Blicavs and Tessa Lavey all selected in the Australian Opals squad. All three have been selected after a fantastic showing at last week’s Opals camp in Phoenix, helping to integrate the new coaching staff, players and support staff to the Opals’ system as well as narrowing the squad to a final team of 12. Phoenix Mercury and new Opals coach Sandy Brondello said that while making the final decision on the team was hard, the team was poised for a deep run in the July tournament. “It was a difficult decision in naming the final team but we feel they will be able to play against all the contrasting styles of the opponents we will face at the FIBA Asia Cup,” Brendollo said. “The system is built on a strong defensive unit playing team defence at all times, getting stops and rebounds and running for easy baskets in transition.” The three Dandenong Rangers will also be joined by Rangers legend Penny Taylor at the FIBA Asia Cup, with Taylor coming on board as an assistant coach with the Opals. “Penny is the one of the most respected Opals of all time,” Brondello said. “She has delivered an incredible legacy as a player and now, having been working with me at the Mercury as an assistant, she has an intimate knowledge of my system that the players can tap into.” The Opals will now fly out for India on 17 July before their first game on 23 July.

Killer blow for Demons as finals hit the horizon By Nick Creely JOURNAL FOOTBALL REVIEW SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 14 Springvale Districts’ 6.12(48) stirring three game winning streak has come to a screeching halt, falling to premiership favourite Chelsea Heights 15.10(100) on Saturday by 52-points. Trying to keep their season alive, the Demons had no answers early as the Heighters ran amok, having 11 scoring shots to just three to take a commanding 23-point quarter-time lead. Some resistance in the second by the Demons - in the form of three goals, kept them in touch at half time - 21-points in arrears. But in the premiership quarter, the Heighters stepped up a class, skipping out to a nine-goal lead thanks to the exploits of Phil Matheson and Joel Williams, who kicked three goals apiece. With clinical full forward - and leading goal kicker in the competition Phil Smith out of action, the Heighters put them away in a strong third quarter burst, before a lackluster final term from both sides left the margin just under the nine goal mark. Springvale Districts will need to wait another week to atone for their heaviest loss of the season as they have the bye next week. Keysborough had the bye on the weekend, but face Murrumbeena in Round 15. DIVISION 3 - ROUND 13 It was an absolute belter of a match at Barry Simon Reserve on Saturday, with Endeavour Hills 10.12(72) just pipping the top-of-the-table Hallam 9.12(66) by six-points. Both premiership fancies had been eyeing this clash off for weeks, with the Eagles having bragging rights in what was their second victory over the Hawks this season. In a game similar to their Round 2 clash in which the Eagles won by just eight-points in a bruising affair that remained tight throughout most of the match, Hallam were on a mission to not make the same mistakes again. But in a tough, unrelenting first quarter, the Eagles got the handy nine-point buffer at quarter time after two quick goals by Jarrod Moralla and Stefan Krull, but were inaccurate, kicking 2.4 to 1.1 in the term, undoing some of their fine work through the midfield. The Hawks roared back to life in the second quarter to steal the lead away from the hosts, as the league ladders put their foot down and starting getting the game on their terms. The game remained tight with both sides realizing the game was going down to the wire, and it was Hallam who held their nerve to hold a slender two-point lead at three quarter time. Late in the final term, with the Hawks holding firm by just a couple of points, Eagles’ forward Daniel Morrison provided the match winning major in brilliant fashion, with the home side holding on in a tense final five minutes. The win means a lot for Endeavour Hills, who now surge a game clear in fourth position on the

ladder. Despite the loss, Hallam still holds top spot by a long margin. The Doveton Eagles 9.13(67), meanwhile, scrapped out a vital 23-point victory over Lyndhurst 4.10(34) at Marriott Waters Reserve. In what could be perceived as a danger game for the Eagles, the likes of gun forward Cory Wilson, Cam Carmody (four goals) and Enayate Samadi (two goals) ensured their side did just enough to bank the four points. The Eagles have now moved into second spot on the Division 3 ladder in what has been a stunning month from the men from Doveton.
In other matches across the round, Lyndale 14.16(100) defeated Carrum Patterson Lakes 10.4(64) as expected, with Trevor Kumetaitis (five goals) reaching 50 goals after yet another bag, South Yarra 26.21(177) banked some percentage over Dandenong 3.4(22), Moorabbin 19.15(129) pulled away late against Sandown 13.4(82), in what was the Cobras’ highest score of the season by a considerable margin, and Ashwood 8.6(54) relinquished second spot after a shock loss to Black Rock 14.14(98).
Thunder strikes leave casualties By Nick Creely NPL 2 EAST REVIEW - ROUND 23 Spare a thought for Murray United, who had to travel four hours home to Lavington after being smashed by one of the in-form teams in the state, if not the country - Dandenong Thunder. With the crowd in raptures at George Andrews Reserve on Saturday evening, the Thunder continue to breathe down Dandenong City at the top of the ladder after winning 3-1 and never looking in trouble. There was a familiar face that greeted the Thunder on Saturday, with soccer legend Archie Thompson suiting up for United. Thompson played 224 games for Melbourne Victory in the A-League, kicking 90 goals, and also represented Australia on 54 occasions for 28 goals. He joined Murray for the first time this season after retiring from his A-League career. His presence alone was not enough to prevent his side from a first half onslaught with Thunder scoring three times. It was star striker Brandon Barnes who got them going early with an impressive strike that reached the back of the net, setting the tone for the rest of the night. In what has been yet another extraordinary season from the Englishman, he has scored 27 goals from 22 starts at an average of 1.2 per game - mind blowing considering Thunder have scored 61 goals for the season as a team. The in-form Veton Korcari then followed suit with his ninth major of the season from just 16 starts to hand them an ominous 2-0 lead before half time. But more disaster struck before the whistle blew, with a crucial error from Murray resulting in an own goal. With the damage done, Murray began to tighten up defensively despite Thunder looking dangerous in their attacking corner, and to credit United’s credit, they managed to hold Thunder scoreless in the final half. They even added a consolation prize themselves, with Thompson nailing a penalty shot late in the game to add some respectability to the scoreboard. Dandenong City, meanwhile, were scheduled to face Nunawading FC on Sunday at Mahoneys Reserve, after the Journal went to print. Similarly, Springvale White Eagles were scheduled to face Melbourne City FC at Latrobe University in Bundoora at the exact same time. In Round 24, City faces Box Hill on Friday night, Thunder travels to take on Eastern Lions and Springvale hosts Nunawading.
Class acts return as Stingrays say their good Knights By Nick Creely TAC CUP REVIEW - ROUND 13 There is perhaps no better team placed to challenge for a TAC Cup premiership than the Dandenong Stingrays. With a sixth straight win over Northern on Saturday morning, the ‘Rays now move within touching distance of top spot. And boy, do they look dangerous. The ‘Rays ran the Knights into the ground, and with high profile stars Oscar Clavarino, Luke Davies-Uniacke, Tom De Koning, Hunter Clark and Bailey Williams back in the fray after Vic Country and school football commitments, dismantled their opposition with utter brutality. In heartwarming scenes to begin the game, returning star Aiden Bonar - who has just recovered from two ACL injuries- slammed through the first goal of the game, setting a tone for a four goal first term that set them up for a 17-point quarter time advantage.
That advantage soon became 38-points at the main break, with Davies-Uniacke (two goals) and Riley D’Arcy (four goals) playing inspiring football. With the game virtually buried midway through the third and the ‘Rays holding a ninegoal lead, the Knights crept back in during the last quarter to slash the margin to a respectable 29 at full time. Skipper Clavarino - who was last week named full back in the Under 18 All-Australian team was simply stellar patrolling the back half, utilizing his excellent hands to intercept everything in his wake. At the other end of the ground it was all Riley D’Arcy, with the bullocking forward kicking four majors and bringing his tally up to 23 for the season (fourth in the competition). But in the end, every player was a winner, with a whole team defence placing maximum pressure on the opposition and covering the ground with speed once the ball was turned over. Worriyngly now for most teams is the fact that
the Stingrays will have its full arsenal available for the rest of the season as it prepares for an assault on its first ever TAC Cup premiership. There will be another development weekend next week meaning no TAC Cup football will be played, but the Stingrays return to the field on 29 July to face off with Gippsland Power at Frankston Oval. A perfect final note for Shima Song By Nick Creely Shima Song’s finest race track performance is also her last with connections immediately announcing her retirement following her brilliant all of the way victory in last Thursday night’s group 2 McKenna Memorial. Race favourite and five time group-1 winner Fanta Bale began beautifully from box three however Shima Song, drawn ideally in box 1, took full advantage of her rails draw to push through and lead through the first turn. The pair were joined by Bella Shima as they cleared away from the chasing pack down the back straight. Positions remained unchanged as they charged through the driving rain, but as they turned for home Shima Song rolled off the fence and Fanta Bale switched to the rails. It set up a thrilling run to the line with Bella Shima chiming in down the middle of the track but Shima Song refused to buckle and held on to record a memorable victory. “She’s the nicest girl, you couldn’t get a better dog,” said handler George Dailly. “She always tries hard and to hold off a dog like Fanta Bale is a huge effort.” The win was Shima Song’s 28th in 66 career starts and the $40,000 first prize catapulted her career earnings to $288,475. “She goes out and works and does exactly what she needs to do. She does everything, she’s just beautiful.” It was a sentiment echoed by Shima Song’s elated owner and breeder, David Gleeson, who had identified her as a talent very early in her education. “She was an incredible dog, you’d open the back of the boxes and she’d run in. “She was always down at the front and she’d fly out, you saw it tonight she began like a rocket. She very rarely misses the start,” he said. Gleeson also bred the third place getter Bella Shima who is a half-sister to the winner, and also

Doveton boy and former Dandenong Stingray Josh Battle made his AFL debut on Friday night for St Kilda in front of more than 45,000 people at Etihad Stadium against Essendon. Still in high school at Haileybury’s Keysborough campus, Battle has been in impressive form recently in the VFL, and got an opportunity to show the Saints fans what he was made of in the absence of suspended forward Tim Membrey. Although it was a dirty night for Battle’s Saints - going down by 61-points - he provided a rare bright moment that suggests he will be a pivotal part of Alan Richardson’s future.
In the third quarter, with the Saints having kicked just two goals and 11 behinds, Battle found space in the forward 50 and marked strongly 40 metres out, directly in front of goal. He duly converted the major, with his teammates rushing to congratulate his first AFL goal. “It was pretty good to kick my first goal, but we were down so it would have been a bit better if we were winning, but what can you do?” Battle said post-match. Although his side fell in disappointing fashion, Battle said the build-up and excitement was something he will always remember. “It was obviously a disappointing result, but the week was really special and I guess it’s something I’ve dreamed of
since I was a young kid, and to play my first game out on the big stage was pretty phenomenal,” he said. A Hawthorn supporter before being drafted by the Saints last year, Battle has modelled his game on star Hawk-forward Jack Gunston and said Lance ‘Buddy’ Franklin was his childhood hero. Battle’s younger brother Nick is also an exceptionally talented footballer and currently plies his trade with Doveton in the South East Football Netball League. Josh finished his first game of AFL football with five disposals, two marks and a goal.
