“Instead the good city folk can come here and see local artists and see them perform in home territory.” Mr Wood said he was impressed the Casey Council had managed to use the federal funding contribution to get the best outcome for residents. “It’s precisely what they said they would achieve on paper but to see it close up you realise it is that and more,” he said. “I must congratulate the Casey Council, councillors and staff; they’ve really gone after a major project for the area going to have benefits for the community for decades to come.” Bunjil Place will be officially opened with a weekend of activities in and around the building on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 October.

Cr Aziz said all residents were welcome to attend the event and be some of the first to experience one of the City of Casey’s biggest infrastructure projects. “After many years of planning and construction, we are incredibly excited that we now have a date to welcome the first visitors to this vibrant entertainment precinct,” he said. “Bunjil Place will be an enlivening destination, providing experiences that will instil a sense of enjoyment, wonder, discovery and belonging in visitors.” “With such a diverse and unprecedented mix of facilities, Bunjil Place will offer enriching experiences for all visitors and you will be able to choose how you want to enjoy this remarkable

new community space.” After the initially opening celebrations have ended, Narre Warren library and council offices will begin to operate from the new building on Monday 30 October. Council expects there will be no interruption to services to residents as the move to Bunjil Place would take place entirely over the weekend. Cr Aziz said he was really looking forward to the official opening of Bunjil Place and to be able to see this massive project come to fruition. “With the opening now imminent, I hope you’re all as excited as I am to step foot inside in the near future and experience all Bunjil Place has to offer,” he said.

Casey’s $125 million Bunjil Place project has an official opening date with construction expected to be complete and the new building open to the public on 28 October 2017. Federal MP for La Trobe and Casey Mayor Sam Aziz took a look at the building on Wednesday 19 July to inspect how the work was coming along. When the mammoth project was first announced in June 2015, council predicted construction would be complete by the end of 2017. The project was jointly funded by Casey Council and the Federal Government thanks to advocacy and input from MP Jason Wood. Mr Wood was instrumental in se-

curing $10 million of funding from the federal government for the project and said he was amazed with how the building has come along. “It looks unbelievable,” he said. “The wood feature archways at the front - when you first see it, you realise this is not an ordinary building this is a work of art.” Mr Wood said the performance and exhibition spaces within the new building would mean people in Casey and surrounding areas will have access to world-class art at their doorstep. “When it comes to the performing arts and arts in general, now we will have a facility which will mean no longer will the good people of La Trobe and Casey need to go into the CBD to see high quality arts,” he said.

Normie was our Mr Chips By Victoria Stone-Meadows

Neal Corcoran, former student, sent a personal message to Brose Avard and the family recounting how Norm had become his favourite teacher. “Norm was my favourite throughout my years of schooling,” Mr Corcoran said. “I was bullied quite a lot for the first few years and he always kept an eye on me in woodwork/metalwork and gave me a nickname that stuck to this day.” “He really made a difference for me in those years and was the only reason I did woodwork. He passes me even though I was s*** - couldn’t do woodwork to save my life but in a way he saved my life as I knew I was always safe in his class.” “A truly lovely man and I will be thinking of you in the coming weeks.” Another former woodwork student of Mr Avard’s, Peter Douglas said students simply warmed to him. “Like many others, Norm’s classes were always something I looked forward to,“ Peter said. “In a funny way, he was really humble in his ability to connect with students and get them interested in what he was teaching.” “He could be funny but get a message through at the same time, which is why he was such an outstanding teacher. “I’m sure he put countless students on the right path, both in their careers and in their lives.” “He was one of a kind and he’ll be sorely missed.”

The Cranbourne Secondary College and wider Cranbourne community are mourning the loss of a great teacher and all around top bloke, Norm Avard. Norman Richard Avard, affectionately known as Normie to his students and colleagues, passed away after a long battle with cancer on Wednesday 12 July. He was the woodworking teacher at Cranbourne Secondary College for 15 years and was well-liked by staff and students at the school. Tributes have flowed for Norm on social media with people from far and wide expressing their condolences to the Avard family. Past students, friends and families have shared memories of a lovable man who loved his footy and his teaching as much as he loved his bright yellow kombi van. Norm was a loving husband to wife Helly and a dedicated father to five children who have remembered their dad as a man who cared deeply for his family. Norm’s youngest son Tony Avard, 29, said his dad was a rock for the family who was always there when they needed him. “Dad was, and us kids found him to be, everybody’s ear and he would listen to everyone,” he said. “We found him to be a compass; he would never tell you what to do but he would guide you along a path and never said ‘I told you so’ if you went another way.” “He was always there, always dad, always he went to everything, and was a very hands-on dad.” Tony Avard said his dad was not afford to show how proud he was on his kids and always encouraged them to be who they are at heart. “He had five kids but raised five individuals; we have similarities because we are family but we are all very clearly individuals and that was a big motivator for dad.” Norm’s second eldest son Brose Avard also has fond memories of their ‘hands-on’ dad and his no-nonsense approach to parenting. “Dad was very hands on; he got us all up and ready for school in the morning, usually by bellowing our name through our open bedroom door,” Brose Avad said. “He’d make breakfast and send us on our way before heading to school himself. On Mondays he would pop home at lunchtime to put the weekly roast in the oven for dinner that night.” “On weekends he would drive us to footy, cricket, the church to play music, or anywhere else we needed to go.” Norm Avard was best known at Cranbourne Secondary College as a teacher that had the respect of his students for his sensible demeanour and fair treatment. “He was tough with his students and spoke in a casual manner and earned their respect,” Brose said. “He was once told by a vice-principal; ‘Norm, if you are going to swear around the kids, could you only use the word once? It’s easier to defend that way’.” Norm was loved and respected by the whole school community from the moment he started there in 1995 to when we stepped down from teaching duties in 2007. Cranbourne Secondary Assistant Principal

He was one of a kind and he’ll be sorely missed…

George Massouris said Norm was a great colleague to have; always happy to lend a hand. “He was a pretty loveable guy,” Mr Massouris said. “He was always was our Santa at end of year functions because he had the beard and the look and is honoured on our 15-year service honour board.” Mr Massouris said Norm was always up for a joke and found creative ways to get a laugh out of people. “He was famous for writing notes for students to go to the office on blocks of wood and we

were always quite impressed he had that kind of method.” “He was a pretty straightforward kind of guy, not like a regular teacher but more like a tradie; a bit more laid-back.” “He was also a mad Collingwood supporter and would always talk footy with anyone that would listen.” Norm Avard was farewelled by family and friends on Wednesday 19 July at the David W. Bull Funeral Home in Cranbourne. The family have asked in lieu of flowers that donations to Ward 5G North of Frankston hospital would be preferred.

Hampton health Hampton Secondary College students have set a healthy example for a group of younger visitors. The college’s senior VCAL students helped create and run a health expo for primary school students on well-being, meditation, healthy hearts and mental health on 22 June. The expo was open for students and parents at River Gum Primary School. Student leaders from River Gum Primary School also collaborated on the expo. Hampton Park Secondary College teacher Darryn O’Connor said it showed show primary and secondary schools could work together to make a positive impact.

Casey’s army calls The City of Casey has unanimously passed a motion to call on federal politicians to introduce compulsory national service for all Australians 18 years of age. Councillor Rex Flannery raised the notice of motion at a Casey Council meeting on Tuesday 18 July, after returning from a trip to Israel in June. He said speaking to young people in Israel, where citizens are automatically drafted into the military for three years at the age of 18, inspired him to have the same discussion in Australia. “I thought I would put it up and open the topic for discussion,” he said. “I think we’re losing the war on crime as Melbourne is the number one crime city in Australia and we face things like alcohol abuse, onepunch attacks, stabbings, and murders; everyday someone is getting shot, domestic violence, and drug abuse, depression in kids and youth suicide, just so many things. “The government is ploughing so much money into all these areas but we are not getting any results, as far as I am concerned.” He says he doesn’t want to ship young people off overseas, but thinks a stint in the defence forces would help a lot of young people stay away from crime. Cr Flannery also claimed serving in the military in Afghanistan would be safer for a lot of young people than being in Melbourne. “When you really think about it, the number of soldiers in Afghanistan that have been killed, it is safer to go over and serve in the Australian Army in Afghanistan than it is

Casey councillors Amanda Stapledon, Rex Flannery and Rosalie Crestani want to see national service introduced for all Australians Picture: VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS 18 years of age. 170716 to walk the streets of Australia,” he said. “I don’t want anyone going and fighting overseas but young people today are being lost in the system and they need direction, leadership, and camaraderie and I think they can receive all those and get support in the army,” he said. “I want young people to start taking pride in themselves and have a bit of respect and look after themselves because at the moment they are losing their way.” Cr Flannery admits he has never served in any branch of the Australian Defence Force but said he wouldn’t hesitate to sign up to prove his point. “I didn’t get to do national service when I was younger and I have been employed all my life but if I have to go to prove a point and to lead by example I would definitely go,” he said. “I wouldn’t hesitate to go for 12

moths or two years to put my money where my mouth is because it is unfair for me to talk about it when I have never been involved.” Cr Flannery also believes that drafting young people into the armed forces would help combat the threat of terrorism in Australia. “With terrorism on the rise, having young people do national service can then back up police and if we have young people in their army uniforms walking around the street it’ll deter terrorism,” he said. “They will also have direction in which way they want to go and we can give them the tools to go out and seek further education or work lives.” Other councillors speaking in support of the motion at the meeting including conservative councillors Rosalie Crestani and Amanda Stapledon. Cr Crestani spoke about how she had some conflicting feelings re-

garding the motion, despite helping Cr Flannery compose it. “When I got home my heart sank because I am a mother and if we helped get this off the ground my almost 14-year-old son would soon be eligible for this,” she said. “The conflict between mother and community leader is sometime at odds but it is really reassuring to think we can give this opportunity to young people.” “I whole-heartedly support this and I think it’s for the best of the nation to strengthen us and our community.” Councillor and co-deputy mayor Susan Serey said national conscription would give the youth of Australia more respect for themselves and others in the community. “This is a great step forward,” she said. “We have all talked about young people doing something constructive and building more love for our country because there are some of us in the community that don’t have that and they take it for granted.” “It’s important we encourage our young people to realise what we have, let them find their way, get paid for two years and serve or be trained.” The City of Casey will write to Federal Member for Holt Anthony Byrne, Member for La Trobe Jason Wood, Member for Flinders Greg Hunt and Defence Minister Marise Payne. The letters will call on these members of Federal Parliament to consider introducing compulsory national service to all Australian citizens and permanent residents when they reach 18 years of age.

Cash found among Opinion donated items Spine needed

By Victoria Stone-Meadows Police are looking for someone who may have donated more than what was intended to a charity donation store in Cranbourne last week. A quantity of cash was found among many other items that were donated to a charity store on High Street, Cranbourne, between Thursday 13 July and Saturday 15 July. The honest staff at the store discovered the money while sorting out items, and handed it over to the Cranbourne police station. Police are attempting to find the owner of the money, and anyone who may have donated goods and accidentally left the cash behind is urged to contact Cranbourne police station on 5991 0600.

On Wednesday 12 July, the Cranbourne-Berwick News Facebook Page shared the news that the developer of the proposed Cranbourne Cinema was not backing away from his plans, despite planning applications being held up by bandicoots. Always a popular point of discussion in the Cranbourne community, the cinema has been in the pipeline for years as the old swimming pool building becomes more and more decrepit. The story post attracted a lot of attention to our Facebook page and here is how our readers reacted: Katie Walker: Is it really going to happen? Better off using the property that was once Masters; been vacant a long while. Judie Hedrick: Obviously the council doesn’t want it to go ahead and I’m not surprised. To suggest people park at the turf club and have to walk along that unlit area is just ridiculous. Bandicoots can be relocated in the safety of our beautiful Botanical Gardens! Emma Gainsford: So many things the council seems to be behind in for the area based on the rate they are approving new housing estates. Entertainment for the area, cinema would be a great start. The car park issue doesn’t surprise me in the slightest. I mean jeez just try to drive Thompsons Road during rush hour. They don’t seem to have an idea when it comes to traffic flow or how to plan for it at all. Lorraine McGregor: Makes me wonder if we’re ever gonna get one? One says it’s going at the old pool! Another says it’s going in the Cranbourne shopping centre car park. Just like stage three for the shopping centre not happening! I reckon Masters is a great spot as plenty of room for cafes and restaurants as two and two go together. Sick of waiting. Leonie Durrington: Should’ve stayed as a lap pool. Loved working at that pool for many years! Rick Cape Hear hear Leonie. Yet another oversight by an incompetent council. New pools far too small for our ridiculously over-crowded town Shannon Paul Cassidy: Casey Council, once again with stupid ideas and let’s make the rules up as we go along! Sarah Allitt: This would be great for the boys when they want to go out with friends. Laura: Hahahahaha who would have thought! Bec Knight: Can’t imagine a cinema here away from shops etc.

Breaking barriers over coffee cups

Leadfeet tackled

By Victoria Stone-Meadows The Hampton Park Uniting Church will be hosting Coffee with a Muslim in Casey later this month in an effort to dispel myths and misconceptions that have grown around the faith. Event organiser a local Casey resident Inaz Jarif said she shot the idea from Sherene Hassan at the Islamic Museum of Australia who held the first coffee with a Muslim event. Ms Hassan held the event following comments from TV personality Sonya Kruger who called for an end to people of the Islamic faith migrating to Australia. Ms Jarif said the whole idea behind the Coffee with a Muslim event was to build better communities by bringing people of all walks of life together in an informal setting. “It could be argued locally and nationally, there is a growing anti-Muslim sentiment in Australia,” she said. “Having been exposed to it myself and witnessing it happening to our young people, and with all that happened last year in Casey, I chose to do this as an open invitation to the community to build a better community.” Ms Jarif participated in many of the sessions hosted by the Islamic Museum of Australia and said the sessions were a great way for people to get a better understanding of each other. “I participated in a lot of those sessions and it was a really positive way to get to know things,” she said. “Not just for the people learning and hearing from us, but the other way too; we learnt a lot from the people that come along.” “I am hoping for an open and positive dialogue that can build a better bond between people, and for our children and future generations, we should be aiming to leave a better society for them than the one we came into.” This is not the first time Ms Jarif and the Hampton Park Uniting Church have

joined forces to bring the community together. In December last year, the Hampton Park Uniting Church hosted a Christmas dinner that was staffed by members of the local Muslim community. Ms Jarif said she couldn’t do the work she did without the support of Reverend Mat Harry at the church and the support he gave for her initiatives. Reverend Harry said he was more than happy to lend a hand and space for these events as they reflected the church’s mission in building stronger and more connected communities. “I think it’s important for everyone to love their neighbour as themselves,” he said. “My experience has always been,

when you get to know people who are different from yourself, you gain and understanding of your shared humanity and that leads to friendship and a lack of fear.” Reverend Harry said he was hopeful those that came along to the event did so with an open mind and open heart. “I hope it is a success and people who come along open their hearts to people who are different from themselves, and gain a new perspective and break down some barriers,” he said. While the event is free to attend, organisers are asking people to book ahead through eventbrite, so they can cater for the number of seating and coffee on the day. To book your spot visit www.eventbrite.com.au and search for “Coffee with a Muslim in Casey.”

City of Casey Council will undertake additional traffic management measures along Somerville Road in Hampton Park to tackle people speeding along the road. Recent traffic surveys have shown people continue to travel above the speed limit along the road outside the primary school, despite council implementing traffic management methods previously. Council has previously narrowed the road in places installing slow point intersection treatments in the 2004-'05 financial year but drivers have still been found to be travelling over the speed limit. In an attempt to combat people speeding on the road, council will install a number of additional traffic calming measures to the road. A centre median type line marking with skid resistant coloured overlay will be placed at the corner where Somerville Road continues on to Vanessa Drive to slow vehicles negotiating this corner. Council will also paint the noses of all the slow point intersection treatments in yellow to highlight their location to oncoming motorists. The signs on the approaches to the slow point intersection treatments will be duplicated on both sides of the road and an advisory 20km/h sign will be placed as a supplementary sign under the existing island warning signs.

At the entrance to the school zone, where the 40km/h zone commences on both approaches to the school, council will install coloured pavement in the road with wording “School Zone.” Somerville Road will also be included in Councils Speed Awareness Mobile Trailer Program to reinforce to motorists their speeds in relation to the speed limit. Council have also passed on the data from their traffic surveys to Casey Highway Patrol and requested more police presence in the area. Councillor Damien Rosario who moved the recommendation at a council meeting on Tuesday 18 July said the road was clearly a problem. “I am very pleased to see these outcomes of the safety initiatives conducted along Somerville Road,” he said. “It is a very well used road with a lot of cars and some of the speeds surveyed have been 8km/h over the speed limit.” While Cr Rosario said he was happy to see the safety measures of the road improved, he said council would keep a close eye on the traffic on the road, moving forward. “We have taken the concerns of residents on board and I think we have done our due diligence,” he said. “We will keep an eye on it and see what happens in future.”

Victims’ never-ending grief sentence By Cam Lucadou-Wells Few understand the damage wreaked on a victim of crime, says a stoic advocate. “It’s a grief that never ends,” says Victims Of Crime Assistance League (VOCAL) founder and secretary Jenny Newman - who calls for more compensation, more guidance and simply more care. She relates strongly to the lonely plight of Berwick residents ‘Anne’ and ‘Beth’ whose lives remain shattered after a brutal assault more than a decade ago, as reported in Star News. Ms Newman says there are not enough support services to help victims. Some victims simply don’t all get directed to support in the first place. No longer do police provide a liaison officer, Ms Newman said. It isn’t mandatory for police to guide victims to the right services, though many do out of their own accord. The early moments are vital, but too many times, victims have rung Ms Newman’s volunteer group VOCAL weeks down the track after fumbling through Google for help. “It’s simple things that matter. You need your family and friends ... but no one understands what you’re going through like someone who’s walked in your shoes.” VOCAL organise with the local council to get Meals On Wheels delivered for as long as possible, so a person doesn’t have to worry about shopping and feeding a family. Or ringing the electricity and credit card companies for leniency over lapsed bills. It allows the family to “shut down”, take time from work, deal with the shock and pain. The group operates without govern-

'Anne' and 'Beth', are victims of crime typically let down by the justice system, says a support advocate. 170238 Picture: GARY SISSONS ment funding. Ms Newman’s goal is to open a VOCAL House where victim families can live and be cared for during the harrowing court trials, or victims can drop in for after-hours support. “These are important things that the government doesn’t rate as important. “We try to operate our own lives at the same time. But we keep going because it’s important.” Ms Newman has walked in the shoes of many victims, isolated and

wrecked emotionally and financially. Ms Newman’s 18-month-old granddaughter was tortured and killed in Queensland in 2001. The girl’s mother and her then-partner were jailed for manslaughter and torture but the fallout never ends, says Ms Newman. The Queensland system paid no compensation to the surviving grandson, since he wasn’t a dependant of his killed sister. Ms Newman looked after the grandson, fought for funding for his autistic needs and set up VOCAL to support

other victims of crime. She also lost her job and set up her own real estate firm. “We lost a house payment because we couldn’t fight the courts ... there was no support there. “Why is the victim punished as well as grieving for the loss of loved ones? All because of something that happened which they had no part in.” Ms Newman says victim impact statements shouldn’t be used just as a healing process, so victims can just “say how they feel”.

It should be a means of ensuring they get the type of support they need, for as long as they need. In the worst cases, victims’ lives are utterly destroyed. They lose their job and hence income, their home and their mental well-being. The state-funded assistance scheme, which caps medical and counselling payments at $60,000, was inadequate, she says. The scheme and its tribunal is under review by the State Government. “There’s no compensation that will fix anything, no jail term that will make it easier. “But why should we be punished with a lack of income, a lack of housing, a lack of mental health support?” Funds should be clawed back from criminals who benefit financially from tales of their offending. “Where is the body that grabs those funds and puts them where they should be - in victims hands? “There’s still way too much emphasis, support and publicity given to perpetrators and not victims of crime. “We know who the perpetrators are, but we rarely remember those suffering on the other side.” In that regard, she agrees with calls by the State Opposition that victims should get compensation from offenders’ superannuation. Political parties may be slow to recognise the issue, but Ms Newman still remembers family and friends too embarrassed to talk about it. “They are things that people don’t want to think about because ‘there but for the grace of God’, it would be them.” “It keeps stunting you, whereas if people embrace you, it can give you a better chance of moving forward.”

Pope hope By Cam Lucadou-Wells Pope Tawadros II - branded as the ‘Pope of Hope’ - is set to receive the keys to the City of Casey while visiting the region’s 2000-strong Coptic diaspora. The religious leader who has preached peace while under violent attack in Egypt will be making his first visit to Australia later this year, with tight security precautions. His Holiness is expected to perform a consecration service at St Mina and St Marina Coptic Orthodox Church in Hallam and to lay a foundation stone at a nearby elderly hostel in September. Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said councillors had unanimously voted to bestow the city’s highest honour to His Holiness. The vote was pulled into closed council at the 4 July meeting due to security concerns ahead of the visit, Cr Aziz said. Only on Palm Sunday, 9 April, the Pope escaped unscathed when a cathedral in Egypt was bombed just after his service and 17 people were killed. ISIS took responsibility for that attack. “The fact that those creatures of ISIS state that Coptic Christians are their favourite pursuit demonstrates how barbaric they are,” Cr Aziz said. “We have been working very co-operatively with Australian Federal Police and Victoria Police to ensure the visit

is secure.” Cr Aziz described the visit as “massive” for the hundreds of Coptic parishioners in Casey. His Holiness was an inspiration, who even in the most trying of situations delivered a message of ‘forgive your enemy’, he said. After the burning of 50 churches, Pope Tawadros II had said if there were no more churches, Coptic Christians would pray with their brothers and sisters in the mosques. “He said: ‘A nation without churches is a lot better than churches without a nation’,” Cr Aziz recalled. “It was absolutely amazing from a man under so much pressure.” Professor Greg Barton, a global Islamic politics expert at Deakin University, said the security precautions were necessary. The concerns were the “relentless round” of sectarian violence against Copts by groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, as well as the executions by ISIS. The Palm Sunday atrocity was followed by the mass killing of Coptic pilgrims in May. “I’m not surprised that they’re taking a careful approach,” Professor Barton said of the Australian visit. “That means there’s a possibility that some people in the broader (community) of nonCopts will be disruptive but also some with sympathies with

ISIS might try to be a hero or a martyr in their own eyes.” Father Abanoub Attalla, of the St Mina and St Marina church, said there was great excitement ahead of His Holiness’s first visit to Australia. “The Pope is always loved by the people.” As the leader of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria, the Pope was regarded as a “peacemaker” who held a weekly sermon for thousands of worshippers, Fr Attalla said. “He’s renowned for leading the Christians in Egypt and being a significant part in promoting peace in Egypt.” The Pope had received keys to cities as well as honorary degrees all over the world, Fr Attalla said. During his Australian trip, the Pope is expected to meet with various heads of churches as well as Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, and other political leaders. Fr Attalla said the church had no knowledge of any local security threats. “We have no news of anything internally. It’s hard for us to know whether there are external threats. “There have been threats everywhere that (His Holiness) has gone, even visiting other countries overseas. “We’re awaiting the intelligence people from police. It’s always changing, though.”

Casey Council has listened to ‘people power’ and will object to a proposed 10 extra poker machines being installed at Berwick Springs Hotel. At a council meeting on 18 July, Councillor Timothy Jackson said 85 per cent of public submissions were against hotel proprietor Zagame’s application to increase its machines from 95 to 105. The community said no, so the council should say no, he said. In its objection, the council will note the $124 million lost by pokie gamblers in Casey in 2015-'16, including $45,000 a day at Berwick Springs Hotel. The extra gaming machines would cause the further loss of an estimated $457,584 a year. Casey will also submit that Zagame’s, if successful, should

double its community donations to $150,000 a year. The hotel - which made $16.5 million from pokies in 2015-'16 had offered to increase its donations to $100,000. Councillors overturned a Casey officer’s recommendation - based on an independent peer review of Zagame’s application - to support the pokie increase. The review by Public Place stated the proposal was a “minor change” that was “not ... likely to result in a material increase in problem gambling”. It would help fund “significant benefits” such as $2.3 million renovations, employ five extra staff and contribute $25,000 in extra community funds a year. “While community attitudes is one of many factors that should be considered ... the proposal would not introduce (electronic gaming machines) into an isolated commu-

Anti-pokies campaigner Tom Cummings says Casey’s opposition to 10 extra machines at Berwick Springs Hotel is significant. 169118 Picture: ROB CAREW nity that is not already exposed to EGMs,” the council report stated. “It is difficult for officers to conclude that the proposal would result in a net negative impact on the social and economic well-being of the community.” Cr Susan Serey noted Casey’s own municipal health and wellbeing plan, which stated the impor-

tance of reducing access to electronic gambling. Cr Gary Rowe, though supporting his colleagues’ motion, said the hotel operated in an ‘uncapped’ regional limit of 1017 machines. Currently there were only about 200 poker machines in that region. At the meeting, objector Tom Cummings said he was “pleasantly surprised” that councillors overturned the report. “This is what happens when the community actually has something to say and gets involved.” Mr Cummings, a problem gambler and now director of Alliance of Gambling Reform, said it was a “significant step” by the council. It would be noted by the deciding authority, the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation, he said. The VCGLR has yet to set a hearing date.

RSPCA Victoria is dropping its adoption prices this coming weekend in a bid to find homes for all the animals that are crowded into their adoption centres. The adoption drive will include the RSPCA Peninsula centre in Pearcedale which has more than 80 animals waiting to find their forever homes. RSPCA Peninsula has around 60 cats and kittens, 16 dogs and puppies and six rabbits currently available for adoption. From Friday 21 to Sunday 23 July, adoption fees across all Victorian RSPCA centres will be reduced to encourage people to adopt a pet. RSPCA Victoria CEO Dr Liz Walker said the RSPCA wanted to encourage anyone interested in a new pet to consider adoption. “We would love to see all of our animals adopted this weekend because pets belong in a home, not a shelter,” she said. “We’re hoping the reduced fees will encourage those considering a new addition to their family to take the next step.” All of the animals up for adoption this weekend will be desexed, microchipped, vaccinated, health and behaviour checked.

A campaign has begun to recruit more than 200 new caregivers for the new St John of God Berwick Hospital. The existing hospital employs 387 caregivers. These numbers are set to grow once the new hospital, under construction, opens its doors on 18 January 2018. Job opportunities will be advertised from 17 July for four weeks. A registration of interest portal was created on the hospital’s website in late 2016 for those interested in gaining employment. More than 2000 people registered. Acting CEO Lisa Evans said that the recruitment marketing campaign, including social media, radio, print and internal promotions, would capture the essence of what it is to be a caregiver at St John of God Berwick, including the unique sense of compassionate care that the hospital is extremely proud of. She said she hoped that this would assist in attracting a high quality of applicants with the right cultural fit for the organisation. Roles available will include a wide variety of clinical, nonclinical and support vacancies across a variety of days and

In fact, the new hospital will make St John of God Berwick one of the largest employers in the Casey Cardinia region.”

Mater Christi College students are motivated learners who graduate with leading academic and vocational results and the confidence to pursue their dreams.

New doctors will also be recruited to the new facility with the introduction of new services including an intensive care unit, cardiac care and a cardiac/ vascular catheter laboratory. Over the past 12 months the hospital’s Business Development team has engaged with current specialist doctors to identify those who are interested in increasing their work at the hospital. “Discussion with a number of new medical specialists has also occurred and we look forward to introducing our new doctors to the community,” Ms Evans said. Finding out what the people think Sixty-five businesses are in the running for this year’s Casey Cardinia Business Awards. A total of 94 applications were received for the awards, which are now in their fourth year. City of Casey economic development manager David Wilkinson said 28 businesses had applied for two categories while a further 47 businesses had been nominated for the people’s choice award bringing the total number of applicants and nominees to 141. Mr Wilkinson said he was pleased by the number of new businesses that were engaging with the awards for the

first time. “Twenty-eight businesses are new nominees. That means there are a healthy number of brand new businesses applying for the awards,” Mr Wilkinson said. He also welcomed the strong interest in the people’s choice award, which attracted close to 4500 votes. “The surprisingly strong interest in the people’s choice award means there is interest being generated at a community level in the whole awards program.” At a business awards sponsors’ meeting on Tuesday, Mr Wilkinson announced a three-year extention of the

business partnership program between the two councils, which includes the annual business awards. “We have extended the partnership for another three years, but I suspect it will go on a lot longer than that,” Mr Wilkinson said. “A Casey Cardinia regional approach is much better for business than the two councils working separately.” The award finalists will be announced at a business breakfast on Wednesday 6 September. Winners will be announced at a gala dinner on Friday 27 October.

Ice and a hot mess By Cam Lucadou-Wells

Magistrate Timothy Bourke said Zjajo was facing a month in jail for her prolific suspended-driving record. "What doesn't she understand from coming to court just a month earlier?" Defence lawyer Emma Strugnell submitted for a community corrections order to tackle the accused's ice and mental health issues, given her relative youth and not having benefited from CCO programs before. It would benefit Zjajo and reduce her risk to the community, Ms Strugnell said. Mr Bourke warned that Zjajo couldn't expect leniency if she hadn't sought help for her condition. He noted she was involved in a serious car accident while affected by ice and driving suspended for the seventh time one month after being in court. "I accept that you suffer from schizophrenia and other mental health issues, but you're the person who ultimately controls that. "The courts are now on notice that you are aware of your mental health issues." As an alternative to jail, Zjajo was convicted and placed on a 12-month supervised CCO with treatment, rehab and 100 hours of unpaid work. She was disqualified from driving for six months.

An ice-smoking driver has rear-ended her boyfriend's car during a hottempered and intoxicated pursuit in Narre Warren. Amina Zjajo, 28, and her partner had been smoking ice at home throughout the day before breaking into an argument in the early hours of an August morning last year, Dandenong Magistrates' Court heard. When the partner drove off, Zjajo followed in a gold Audi at about 80km/h on Tinks Road, police alleged. She collided into the rear of his vehicle as he slowed down at the entry of the Monash Freeway on-ramp. His car then spun around, skidded about 30 metres into the wrong lane and struck a traffic pole. Zjajo's car came to rest against her partner's car. She was taken by ambulance to Dandenong Hospital for mouth injuries. Her blood sample tested positive for methamphetamine - something she smoked as a means of self-medication for depression, she told police. At the time, Zjajo's licence was suspended due to excessive speed, Senior Constable Jimma Jeffs told the court. It was her seventh such offence in the past two years, including receiving a conviction just a month before the latest offence. She was also charged with breaching an intervention order by banging on the door of a close family member's house in March.

‘Cool cap’ helps out The effects of cancer are widespread. Not only does the disease wreak havoc on a person’s body, it can strip them of their confidence too with hair loss an often unavoidable result of chemotherapy. However, with the purchase of a DigniCap machine, St John of God Berwick Hospital is hoping that the risk of hair loss will be significantly reduced for its patients undergoing chemotherapy. Developed by Swedish company Dignitana, the DigniCap is a tight-fitting moulded, silicon cooling cap that is designed to lower the temperature of the scalp to reduce blood flow and consequently, the impact of chemotherapy on the hair follicle. The action of chemotherapy to reduce or cease cancer growth can also impact on hair growth the ‘cool cap’ seeks to protect the hair follicle from this. Hair loss is considered by most patients as a challenging side effect of chemotherapy treatment as it impacts on a person’s confidence to socialise and serves as a visible reminder of their cancer diagnosis. St John of God Berwick Hospital embarked on a mission to raise approximately $40,000 to purchase the DigniCap machine in an effort to improve the selfesteem and wellbeing of its patients. Funded through generous

“Often when patients have been given a cancer diagnosis they can feel they have lost control over their lives, so having the option to control hair loss is a small but poignant victory in their fight against cancer.” Although the process extends treatment times, according to Dignitana, the technology has been well received, with eight out of 10 patients being satisfied with the significant reduction (and in

Squamous cell carcinomas are the second most common skin cancers in Australia after basal cell carcinomas, according to Dr Mike Inskip at Berwick’s Sun Patrol Clinic. They appear on the sundamaged skin of people over 40, and are particularly common on the scalp of bald men, on the back of hands and forearms and legs in those who wear shorts, Dr Inskip said. They present as hard, tender lumps or ulcers and can grow very quickly, sometimes over a matter of weeks. Dr Inskip said they required prompt, complete excision as these cancers were capable of spreading into the lymphatic system and blood stream. “A small number of more aggressive squamous cell

FASTER SELLING HOMES SHOW INCREASED DEMAND The state’s property market continues to perform strongly with homes in regional Victoria taking a median of 55 days to sell in June - 11 days less than the same period last year. New REIV data shows homes in multiple regional towns sold significantly faster in June with the median days on market falling by double-digits over the year. A decline in the number of days a home takes to sell typically indicates increased buyer interest in a particular town or region. In the year to 30 June, the private sale market in the tourist town of Hepburn Springs recorded one of the largest improvements with homes selling in a median of 38 days - 68 days faster than the same period last year. Homes also sold faster in the coastal towns of Barwon Heads and Cowes in a

median of 45 and 69 days respectively, both down by 51 days on June 2016 figures. Kerang in the state’s north also experienced significant improvements over the year with homes spending 77 days on market in June, 37.5 days less than the same month last year. Increased buyer interest was also recorded in Wangaratta and Ocean Grove with homes selling 33 days faster than 2016 figures in a median of 36 and 49 days respectively. Other regional towns experiencing improvements in their private sale markets include Drouin, down 29 days over the year to a median of 32 days on market; Clifton Springs, falling 26.5 days over the year to a median of 39 days on market; Bannockburn, down 26 days over the year to a median of 49 days; and

Warragul, falling 25.5 days over the year to a median of 29 days on market. Meanwhile, the Geelong suburb of Waurn Ponds was one of the state’s best performing private sale markets in June with homes spending just 22 days on market - 20 days less than the same period last year. This was followed by Corio and Irymple where homes spent just 27 days on the market in June, down 15 and five days respectively on June 2016 figures. Strong private sale markets were also evident in Lara, Belmont and East Geelong with homes in these areas selling in a median of 29 days. A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY

BEACONSFIELD

THIS is a unique offering to secure a prime development/ business site in the heart of vibrant Beaconsfield. THE corner allotment is located in one of the most well-exposed streets in town, fronting Princes Highway, making for an ideal business opportunity. The property will be sold with endorsed plans and permits for two well-designed town homes. All the new owner needs to do is decide on a builder, with all the hard work done. A three-bedroom brick veneer home occupies the property and would be highly sought after as a rental. With supply of blue chip real estate well short of market demand, the selling agent says that this property’s time on the market is expected to be short.

BEACONSFIELD UPPER

EXCITING TIMES AND VICTORIAN GRANDEUR ARGUABLY one of the region’s oldest and most prestigious homes, Clovelly is being offered for sale for the first time in decades. Restored well beyond its original grandeur, this stunning Victorian masterpiece has all the charm and character of a bygone era but still offers all the luxuries that would be expected from a home of this calibre. As visitors enter the striking main corridor, the stately master bedroom is on the right boasting an original marble fire place and an atrium style en suite complete with lead light windows and a claw foot bath. The second bedroom is just as large and also has its own fire place while a further three bedrooms are down a separate corridor and share the family bathroom. Both the formal sitting room and dining room are grand in proportion and are elegantly separated by a two-way fire place and have a beautiful garden vista from each of the windows. The hostess kitchen features an antique style 1200mm oven and cook-top together with an abundance of bench space, two sinks, a dishwasher and room for two fridges. The family room, which flows through from the kitchen and casual meals area, is a great place for everyone to gather as it overlooks the magnificent gardens on the left and the glorious solar heated inground pool and spa on the right. Outside, the extensively landscaped grounds are reminiscent of the grandest of English estates with some of the trees dating back to when the home was

originally constructed. Brides and grooms frequently choose to have their wedding photos taken here and regularly conduct their ceremonies here, too. Gangster, Squizzy Taylor is said to have hidden out here in the early 1900s while he was on the run from the authorities and it was also home to an order of nuns in its earlier days. Victorian features such as 12 foot ceilings, ornate cornices, ceiling roses, archways, corbels and decorative quoins to the brickwork complete a picture perfect ambiance that would be impossible to replace. Boasting a location which is only 10 minutes to Haileybury, St Margaret’s and Berwick Grammar schools as well as being within walking distance of golf courses, tennis courts, wineries, restaurants and local shops, this is the ultimate in luxury lifestyle. The privacy and luxury of this home can only truly be appreciated by taking the time to meander through.

Eagles future in the winds By David Nagel

Dandenong Stingrays ruckman Bailey Williams has a massive leap. 168489

Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS

Bailey’s confidence is growing in leaps By Nick Creely Dandenong Stingray ruckman Bailey Williams is a high leaping excitement machine capable of the extraordinary. Just 17-years-old - Williams doesn’t qualify to be drafted until 2018 - but is going to be spoken about consistently for the next year. Standing at 198cm, Williams has been playing a ruck/forward role for the ‘Rays in 2017, and has averaged a goal a game and over 20 hit-outs. His exploits as an bottom-ager in the TAC Cup earnt him a recall to the Vic Country side for the recent National Championships, competing with the best young and soon to be AFL players in the country. At the National Championships, Williams was ultra-impressive for Country, using his insane leap and excellent goal nous to kick goals and become one of the dominant ruckman throughout the carnival. Often throughout games, Williams out-leapt all the ruckmen in his wake,

allowing his midfielders first use of the football. He told Star News Group that the experience was a massive thrill and something that will hold him in good stead in the future. “It’s taken a lot of development to step up to the next level - especially nationals as a bottom-ager - I’ve been in pretty good form at TAC Cup level, and sort of thought that I’d have every chance to get a call-up for Vic Country,” he said. “I played alright in the trial games, and it sort of just happened (being selected) - I definitely felt like I fit in and didn’t look out of place as a bottom ager - I was pretty comfortable. “I was serviceable throughout the carnival, but had there been a few more games I could have done more, I was just starting to get into it all. “I’ll be ready to go in next year’s carnival, I’ve had a taste and now I know what it takes and looking forward to it all again.”

At 14-years of age, at his school - Westernport Secondary College Williams’ freakish athleticism hasn’t gone unrewarded. “I’ve broken a few high jump records in athletics at Westernport, there were few records set by Andrejs Everitt down at Carlton, and I’ve broken everyone one of them,” he said. Although playing predominantly as a ruckman as he continues to grow and develop, Williams has a natural ability to kick goals and clunk big contested marks, and sees himself playing a dual role in the future. “As a junior, I’ve mainly been a forward, but getting older and my body getting a bit bigger and taller, I’ve been able to play a ruck role at a higher level - I enjoy both positions, I’m not overly fussed where I play to be honest,” he said. “I like to watch the more mobile ruckman in the AFL, like a Paddy Ryder, Nic Naitanui and Brodie Grundy and how they go about it and try and learn off them.

“I feel like I’ve always got the edge over my opponent in the ruck, and down forward I’m pretty dangerous too so it’s great. “It’s a confidence thing with me earlier this year I doubted myself and probably didn’t want to make many mistakes - but as I play more games, things are starting to fall into place confidence wise and with my ability to play those positions.” As for the fortunes of his TAC Cup club, Dandenong Stingrays - he said the best is yet to come and can’t wait to get stuck into the back end of the season. “We’ve played fairly well as a side all year, with some stiff losses, but we have to forget about that now and keep playing good footy,” he said. “The season has been up and down for all sides - the side we have in now, I don’t see us being beaten very often at all - we haven’t had a full team all year and to get those guys in will be awesome.”

AFL Victoria’s aim to align clubs in the VFL Women’s competition with those in the VFL Men’s could see Cranbourne handing over its VFLW licence to the Casey Demons. Informal talks have taken place between the two clubs that call Casey Fields home, with South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) club Cranbourne taking an open and honest approach with its VFL neighbour. The Eagles can either resist the change, or take the option of working closely with the Demons to make the transition a success. There is still a lot of water to go under the bridge before the licence changes hands, but Cranbourne president Shane Baker said he would have mixed emotions if the move was to go ahead. “From a club aspect it would be disappointing if it did happen,” Baker said. “We’ve put a lot of time and effort into out women’s program, built from one team to three, and created a great atmosphere around women’s football at the club.” But he said his club would not stand in the way of progress. “If the girls in our VFL Women’s side are going to get access to better facilities that help improve their football - it would be selfish of us to stand in their way.” Cranbourne currently has three women’s teams competing with the VFLW side complemented with teams in division one and two of South Eastern Women’s Football (SEWF). If the move were to go ahead, Cranbourne would still maintain a presence in women’s football with the two teams competing in SEWF likely to continue into the future.

Night grand final still up in the air By David Nagel The AFL South East Commission met on Monday night where it was expected to ratify a decision to host this year’s South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) grand final under lights at Casey Fields on Saturday 16 September. SEFNL clubs corresponded via email on Friday 14 July, confirming that AFLSE had made contact and confirmed the decision to make the night grand final a reality. All nine clubs in SEFNL - both football and netball - were against the move from the traditional day grand final held at the venue of a member club. Cranbourne president Shane Baker said the clubs were very disappointed with the move. “There just seems to be no rhyme or reason for this to go ahead, we thought we were being heard but obviously our collective voice fell on deaf ears,” Baker said. The clubs last hope to stop the night grand final from proceeding came in the form of SEFNL Chairman and AFLSE Commissioner Ryan Ford, who went in to bat for the clubs at the meeting. The clubs have identified Beaconsfield, Berwick or Pakenham as their preferred option to host the biggest day on the calendar.

A full-strength Dandenong Stingrays outfit withstood an impressive final quarter push from the Northern Knights at Shepley Oval on Saturday to come away eventual 29-point winners, 14.5(89) to 8.12(60). The impressive depth of the Rays' list has been on display all season, but on Saturday the side showed just what it was capable of with a full arsenal of weapons at its disposal. With 10 changes from Round 12, the Rays led all game before holding on for a near five-goal win after tiring in the last. They led by 46 points at three-quarter time before the Knights charged their way back gallantly in the last. TAC Cup mainstays Luke Davies-Uniacke, Oscar Clavarino, Hunter Cark, Mason De Wit and Bailey Morrish were all particularly influential for the Rays, while Riley D’Arcy finished with four goals and provided a real target inside 50. Co-captains Clavarino and Josh Bateman were stellar in defence for Dandenong, while the likes of Jesse Davies and Angus Paterson also stood strong against the Knights’ forwards. “The game really could have gone either way in the end - we were fortunate enough to get across the line today due to the work rate in the first half, and that gives the boys

some real confidence as we come to the back end of the TAC Cup season, ” Stingrays coach Craig Black told the club’s website post-match. “With 10 changes you never know what to expect - it’s the first time since Round 1 we’ve been able to basically pick from our full list. “The focus the boys are bringing each week, no matter who plays, is very impressive.” The last quarter saw the Stingrays go in with two less players with De Wit gone for the day with a back injury, while Aiden Bonar’s day was over due to pre-planned game time. Bonar was responsible for one of the day’s biggest highlights when the youngster, who has missed the past two years dealing with some major injuries, marked strongly and kicked truly from 35 metres to register the first goal of the game barely two minutes into the contest. His team mates mobbed him, showing just what his return meant to both he and the group. But by contrast the Knights slotted four last-quarter goals to just two from the Stingrays, who were down on rotations. Still, the victory puts the Stingrays in good stead, effectively securing a finals spot before enjoying a week off due to the TAC Cup bye.

Doveton boy and former Dandenong Stingray, Josh Battle, made his AFL debut on Friday night for St Kilda in front of more than 45,000 people at Etihad Stadium against Essendon. Still in high school at Haileybury Keysborough campus, Battle has been in impressive form recently in the VFL, and got an opportunity to show the Saints fans what he was made of in the absence of suspended forward Tim Membrey. Although it was a dirty night for Battle’s Saints - going down by 61-points - he provided a rare bright moment that suggests he

will be a pivotal part of Alan Richardson’s plans for the future. In the third quarter, with the Saints having kicked just two goals and 11 behinds, Battle found space in the forward 50 and marked strongly 40 metres out, directly in front. He duly converted the major, with his team-mates rushing to congratulate his first AFL goal. “It was pretty good to kick my first goal, but we were down so it would have been a bit better if we were winning, but what can you do?” Battle

said post-match. Although his side fell in disappointing fashion, Battle said the build-up and excitement was something he will always remember. “It was obviously a disappointing result, but the week was really special and I guess it’s something I’ve dreamed of since I was a young kid, and to play my first game out on the big stage was pretty phenomenal,” he said. Battle finished his first game of AFL football with five disposals, two marks and a goal.

High fives for ’Pies round By David Nagel A rejuvenated Narre Warren has cast fresh light on the South East Football Netball League with a stunning 79-point victory over third-placed Beaconsfield at Holm Park Reserve. The two teams had differing form lines heading in: the fifth-placed Magpies copping a 49-point slap across the face from Berwick, while the Eagles had wins over Officer, Pakenham and Hampton Park sandwiched between two byes. But it was five weeks of easy footy that left the Eagles vulnerable on the weekend - and the Magpies pounced, silencing the doubters and making a strong play for a coveted double chance at the end of the season. “I delved into our history and I don’t think since midway through 2009 have we had our backs against the wall as strongly as we did leading into this match,” Narre Warren coach Heath Black said. “This group didn’t want to be the one that miss out on finals and they responded in great fashion; it was a win that was definitely built above the shoulders. I knew we had it in us, but there was definitely some self-doubt creeping in, even from me as coach. It’s been tough going as a coach, but we scaled things back to a simple game plan, and the players were outstanding. I feel very relieved for the players.” The teams went goal for goal until midway through the first term before the Magpies surged, kicking the next six goals of the match. They maintained that advantage until three-quarter time before rubber-stamping their victory with a glorious 7.2 to 1.2 final term. The Magpies had many fine players, none better than Mitch Cox who played electrifying

Dillan Bass continued a quality season in defence. Officer has ended the finals aspirations of Tooradin, defeating the Seagulls by 14 points in the close one of the round at Starling Road. No more than two goals separated the sides at the first three breaks, the efficient Kangaroos leading by 12 points, 11.1(67) to 8.7(55), at three quarter time. Early goals to Jesse Longmuir and Blair Allan extended the margin to 26 points before the Seagulls surged - kicking three goals in five minutes - to cut the deficit to eight. Luke Callander then kicked the sealer for the home side. Matt Clarke kicked four for the Roos, Callander three, while Andrew Dean was dangerous up forward for the Seagulls with four majors. And Berwick’s perfect season has continued, the Wickers defeating Pakenham by 86 points at Toomuc Reserve. Jimmy Harrison, Brody Connelly and Tim Gunn kicked three each for the Wickers while Steve Morey was the outstanding player for the Lions. Doveton had the bye. SENIORS Narre Warren midfielder Hayden Stagg celebrates his goal after the siren that set up a Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS handy quarter-time lead against Beaconsfield. 170569 get ahead of ourselves,” he said. “Cranbourne is a very, very good team, very consistent, and we’ll need to be at our best.” Cranny tuned up for this week’s blockbuster at Kalora Park with a 200-point victory over a struggling Hampton Park. The Eagles turned on the jets in the second term, kicking 15.7 in a brilliant display. Troy Tharle kicked nine for the winners while

footy to finish with four goals. Aaron Wilson also kicked four, while a midfield brigade led by Dean Kelly, Michael Collins and Josh Tonna put the Eagles to the sword. Despite the raging success, the Magpies will go in as underdogs against Cranbourne this week - a tag that sits comfortably with Black. “As individuals, and as a team, we’ve shown glimpses of our best form but we haven’t been anywhere near good enough for long enough to

Magpies’ keen eyes for three-peat flag By David Nagel Narre Warren’s quest for a third-consecutive premiership is right on track after the Magpies stood tall for a three-goal, 43-40, victory over Beaconsfield at Holm Park Reserve. The Magpies led by a goal at quarter time before the resurgent Eagles took a three-goal advantage to half time. The Magpies squared things away at the final break, leaving an epic final 15 minutes to decide the outcome. The victor would become the clear challenger to Tooradin in the battle for top spot on the ladder. “I think experience got us through in the end,” said a happy Narre Warren co-coach Greg Heinrich. “Erin Clark is seasoned when it comes to these tough games, and it was players like her that made sure we didn’t take the foot off the pedal at any stage in the last quarter.” Goalers Jemma Osborne (goal shooter) and Kealeigh Brown (goal attack) had big shoes to fill against the Eagles, with Gabby Dwyer, Chloe Phillips and Tayla Shannon all absent due to VNL duties. Clark (wing defence), Bec Potalej (wing attack) and Leigh Taylor (centre) produced a strong second-half showing for the Pies, while Tracey Dell (goal keeper) had a great battle with her long-time foe Bianca Sanzaro (GS), who scored 26 of the side's 40 goals. Ash Gill (C), Kate Murphy (WD), Dani Cameron (gial defence) and Emily Boribon (GA) were also consistent over four quarters for the Eagles. Cranbourne has broken its run of two consecutive draws with an impressive 51-35 victory over Hampton Park at Robert Booth Reserve. The Eagles built their lead steadily, from five to 10 by half time, to 13 at three-quar-

ter time before extending to 16 by the final whistle. Hayley Galpin, Jodie Holt and Allie Oakenfull played great defensive roles in the absence of Tara Cecil and Sharni Lambden, while Mel Perrins and Nat Sparks gave great drive through the midcourt. Megan Cripps, Bev Miller and Bec Hall tried hard for the Redbacks, who have fallen short of expectations this season. Berwick has held off a fast-finishing Pakenham to win 54-50 at Toomuc Reserve. Itagia Amataga (GS), Emily Wilson (GA) and Emily Pratt (WA) got the Wickers off to a flyer, leading by four goals at the first break, before the Lions dug in for the fight. With Renae Joiner (C), Carly Saunders (WA) and Keely Wright (WD) evening up the midcourt battle the Lions matched motors with the Wickers, scoring a dozen each in the second term. Amataga put on a clinic in the third, scoring 14 goals as the visitors stretched their advantage out to nine at the final break. The Lions surged, scoring 15-10 in the last quarter to fall four goals short of a maiden victory. And Tooradin has retained top spot with a 50-31 triumph over ROC. The Seagulls were most impressive in the second term, scoring 15-4 to have the Kangas on the back foot. Shona Wells, Emma Iacovou, Jess Cox and Holly Gillespie shared the midcourt duties for the Gulls, while Alex Duff, Alex Maher and Dayle Willis did likewise in attack. Laura Quinn (GD), Mel Overdyk (GK), Sam Neil (GA) and Olivia Hamilton (WA) were consistent performers for the Kangaroos. Doveton had the bye.

Hallam Hawks hot By Nick Creely

Ciara’s brave fight brings out the best BEACONSFIELD Football Netball Club held a fundraiser for one of its own on Saturday, supporting Ciara Nelson and her ongoing battle to overcome a brain tumour discovered in June last year. Ciara, pictured playing against NARRE WARREN on Saturday, and her family are raising funds to help with costly treatment, which could run into tens of thousands of dollars. With help from people like, from left, Tahnee and Shelley Ziesler with Molly and Julie Murnane, the club raised $5500 on the weekend. Good luck Ciara and well done to all involved. 170569 Pictures: STEWART CHAMBERS

When Hallam defeated a starstudded Bentleigh to take out the inaugural Seymour Law Cup in the pre-season competition this year, there was an ominous feel to the Hawks. After finishing fifth in the Southern Football League Division Three competition in 2016 - and bowing out to the Doveton Eagles in a final - the expectation was that Hallam could be around the mark once again. But coming into the pointy end of the 2017 season, Hallam are the premiership favourites, a tag that the club will relish as finals approach - but not let them become complacent. “After we won the pre-season final against a Division 1 side, we automatically become the hunted this year - even though we finished fourth or fifth last year, we earnt that right after winning the pre-season comp,” Hawks coach Scott Slater said. “And then when we beat Doveton Eagles for the first time this year, people started saying we were the real deal, and we welcome that. “But we haven’t actually won a flag yet, we need to stay focused - we haven’t achieved anything but sit on top of the ladder.” Slater said that the turnaround of his club’s on-field fortunes has come down to a clear plan focusing on little goals based around development of kids and lifting the standards of the whole club. “It is really pleasing - had a three year plan put in place, we wanted to be competitive last year, make finals this year and have a crack at a flag next year, but we’re already 12 months

ahead of that,” he said. “When we looked at the draw, we sort of pencilled in some early wins against sides we hadn’t beaten before - we set little goals along the way and achieved that. “We have tried to break the season down to six-week blocks - last year we won our first six games and everything looked on track - but when you get hit with a loss it’s hard to keep it on track. “We’ve been big on pushing through the kids in games where it is safe to do so - we’re mindful on the kids’ development, we’re aware and mindful we need to get games into these kids to mould them into full time senior players in a year or two. “The club train together, we don’t exclude as such, but our whole club is one- we’re big on educating our kids and enforcing a club game plan. “We understand there is a long way to go this year - I’m happy to sit where we are at the moment, but we have to stay focused.” Heading into a potentially epic finals series, with rivals Doveton Eagles, Ashwood, Endeavour Hills and South Yarra all breathing down their necks, Slater conceded that despite taking things one week at a time, looking ahead won’t hurt them. “Player management is the key for us - if we get an opportunity to rest up a few older bodies or heal some niggling injuries we’ll do that - fresh legs in finals series do help,” he explained. “But we need to focus on the next week, strive for the positive result, and the rest will take care of itself.”

Reality check hits home at Cranbourne

AFLSE review deadline extended AFL South East is still three weeks away from releasing its final recommendations from its Senior Competition Review. Region General Manager John Anderson sent this memo to the clubs on Monday explaining the reasons for the delay, with the original date set down for the end of July.

Cranbourne now has a week off to prepare for what should be its most prosperous period of the season after going down to Geelong by 46 points on Sunday. The Eagles headed west with high hopes after pushing the Cats to just seven points earlier in the season, but suffered a reality check right from the start. The Cats kicked 3.2 to 0.1 in the opening term, and things only got worse from there, the home side extending their lead from 19 to 26 at half time before taking a 39-point lead to the final break. Kirsten McLeod kicked two for the Eagles while Jaz Grierson and Bianca Jakobsson slotted one each in busy performances around the ground. Maree Drennan, Bec Pearce and Hayley Wildes were others to hold their heads high. The Eagles, currently eighth in the 10-team competition, face bottom sides Box Hill and Seaford in the coming weeks before a tough run home against Melbourne Uni (5th), Diamond Creek (1st) and St Kilda (3rd). Cranbourne has tightened its grip on third place in the South Eastern Women’s Football Division One competition after a thrilling three-point victory over bottom-side Port Melbourne. The Eagles had some work to do at three-quarter time, trailing by two points, but 1.1 to 0.2 final term saw them escape with victory. Alicia Heins was the star up forward for the Eagles kicking two, while Janet

Cranbourne VFLW coach Sein Clearihan will be hoping for a strong finish to the season. 170313 Picture: ROB CAREW Sullivan, Alana Bell and Alice Barfoot kicked valuable six pointers. Tess Thomas and Parris Stahl were key prime movers for the winners. In Division Two, Alicia Brown and Jess Cox played starring roles and Shae Frazer kicked two in Beaconsfield’s 18-point victory over Seaford. The Eagles remain in fourth spot, while Cranbourne went down to Edi-

Asp by 30 points despite a last-quarter goal to Sheridan Holland. Top-team Endeavour Hills had the bye. In the Development League, Officer had a tough day against Tyabb. Tiarna Kramer, Tyra Collison and Vic Liarakos were best for the Kangaroos who eventually went down by 136 points.
