Ask Hanlon Industries general manager Teresa Hanlon what makes Geelong such a great place, and it’s obvious right from the start. “People in Geelong are enduring and passionate,” Teresa says. “Geelong has taken a few knocks over the years, but collectively remain positive, and we believe its future is bright”. Hanlon Industries has been part of the Geelong landscape for 18 years and recently relocated to large new premises in Corio. “We’re a family owned and operated business,” Teresa says. “My husband Paul and myself are both born and bred in Geelong and our three children (Hugh, Tom and Elly, who also work for the business) have been raised here. A fabulous future ahead By Mandy Oakham Everybody’s favourite Geelong grandfather Frank Costa has looked into his crystal ball and said the city’s future looks bright. Mr Costa has identified for the Indy his Fabulous Five things to ensure a successful future for Geelong. And he’s added in a sneaky sixth issue that needs to be worked on. According to Mr Costa, Geelong’s key to success is all its wonderful lifestyle, especially for growing families. “I was born here and grew up and enjoyed all the wonderful things about Geelong, then my children grew up here and enjoyed all the wonderful things, and now my grandchildren are growing up here enjoying the wonderful lifestyle.” Frank’s Fab Five are: 1. Education “Just think, we have on offer here in the region first class education right through from primary school to university. And we can never underestimate the important role Deakin plays in our city. Fantastic!” 2. Employment “We’ve come a long way from the dark days of the collapse of Pyramid and every day you hear about new developments and new opportunities around Geelong. It’s important we continue to ensure the employability of our young people

and that a wide range of employment opportunities are available to them.” 3. Health “We have top-class medical and health facilities and with the arrival of the Epworth things have only got better.” 4. Recreation “We have the Surf Coast, the Otways, the Great Ocean Road all on our doorstep and throughout the city and the region we have the best sport and recreational facilities alongside terrific parks and beaches - what more could we want?” 5. Affordable housing “Everyone thinks the prices of housing is expensive but look down the road at how much it costs in Melbourne. We have to remember just how lucky we are and must work hard to make sure young families can always afford homes in Geelong.” Mr Costa said transport is the only area needing significant work. “It would just be the icing on the cake if we could just get Avalon operating to its full capacity and that fast train between Melbourne and Geelong, then everything would be just perfect.” And as for his beloved Cats? “They’re in an excellent position to win but if anyone had told us we’d be second on the ladder at this point in the season I think we’d have been surprised but very happy.”

Projects aiming to bring city to life A series of works are underway to transform central Geelong to attract more people to live and work centrally and increase vibrancy and creativity across the city day and night. The works are part of the Victorian Government’s Revitalising Central Geelong Action Plan to ensure Geelong has a vibrant city centre, a prosperous local economy and the bright future it deserves. The Laneways Project is enhancing the central city’s unique laneways culture around the popular eating and shopping area of James St, northern Shorts Plc and Lt Malop St’s western end. Bluestone paving, additional trees and plantings, public art, street furniture and improved lighting are part of the program. The Green Spine project will create an eight-metre wide botanic walk featuring mass plantings and additional seating and artwork. Separated one-way bike lanes will run either side of Malop St, with the Green Spine eventually connecting Johnstone Park with Eastern Gardens. Little Malop Street Bridge was recently completed, offering a safe, attractive connection between Geelong West and the city centre long for cyclists and pedestrians. The project complements Revitalising Central Geelong’s aim of “increasing liveability” in the city centre.

Over 27 years of Professional Service

As the State Member for Geelong, I was proud to recently attend NAIDOC week celebrations and events in Geelong. NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia every July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated by Aboriginal communities, and Australians from all walks of life. This year’s NAIDOC week theme was Our Language Matters. Significantly, there was once more than 230 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander language groups across Australia. Today, only 120 are still spoken, and many are at risk of being lost. I would like to acknowledge the work of the late local Aboriginal elder, Uncle Dave Tournier, for his commitment to the preservation of Aboriginal language and community in the Geelong region. I’m proud that the Andrews Government has introduced legislation to explicitly protect, by law, Aboriginal heritage, including language, song, and traditional knowledge of flora and fauna. We are the first government to do so in Australia. Recently, in a rare event, Aboriginal elders stood on the floor of the Victorian parliament to give their response in Indigenous language to the introduction of the Yarra River Protection Bill. This legislation will, for the first time in Australia, include the written language of the elders. As the Premier’s Ambassador for Closing the Gap, I am working closely with the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Natalie Hutchins, on the Closing the Gap Refresh. This is a joint review by the federal and all state and territory governments of progress in Closing the Gap. We applaud the proposed shift to a strengthsbased approach, rather than concentrating solely on deficits, as the focus for Closing the Gap. Change is needed as progress in improving outcomes for Aboriginal people has been slow, and failed to meet targets. I believe it is important that the Refresh be tru-

Aboriginal prosperity cannot be achieved without recognition of Aboriginal community well-being and culture. In regards to a Treaty, the Andrews Government has made a $28.5 million budget commitment to treaty and self-determination. A working group, comprising Aboriginal elders, traditional owners, organisations and young Aboriginal people have been guiding this. The next step will be community engagement via a community assembly. The Aboriginal people must have certainty in this process. The Andrews Government intends to progress the treaty process through to legislation. However, what is truly needed is a national approach to treaty. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander delegates, at the recent First Nation Constitutional Convention, made this clear in their heartfelt Uluru Statement which rejected symbolic constitutional recognition. Bedding under one roof It’s hard to miss Slumberworld’s huge factory and retail building on Torquay Road at Grovedale, right beside the BP service station. The bright red bedding logo is fast becoming a recognised Geelong icon, not only for quality but for cost-cutting, too. “Making mattresses and selling them direct is great,” owner/operator Noel Primmer says. A Geelong leader for all kinds of help When it comes to helping the community, Geelong Disabled People’s Industries (GDP Industries) is one of the leaders in Geelong. At GDP Industries, their mission is to support people with a disability as well as being able to offer and provide them with suitable employment. The chance of a real job is something all Australians deserve, however being in the workforce is more than having employment for a person with a disability. They benefit from interaction with the community, as well as helping them build self-esteem. The not-for-profit organisation offers longterm supported employment to people with a disability and has been part of the Geelong community for 50 years. If you are registered with NDIS you are welcome to apply for a position at GDP or you can arrange a site visit.

Geelong Port is actively pursuing new trade opportunities. 170752

School students in the Geelong area do work experience at GDP Industries. GDP also offers work placement for Justice Department/Office of Corrections clients to fulfil their community service commitments in a light industrial manufacturing environment. GDP Industries began in 1967 and has held contracts with some of the largest companies in Geelong, such as CoGG, Barwon Health, CottonOn, Target, One-steel and also Alcoa and Ford. At GDP Industries, you’ll find a light industrial factory specialising in e-waste and operate a secondhand bookstore where they provide employees with a mixture of skills/training and task rotation opportunities across a range of work areas such as mattress recycling, packaging, textiles, woodwork, steel, and resource recovery.

Port key to trade The Port of Geelong continues as Victoria’s key specialised bulk and break bulk goods port, trading in crude oil, petroleum products, chemicals, steel, woodchips, fertilisers and grains. It has several multi-purpose berths, wharves and associated storage and processing facilities, which include Lascelles Wharf, Corio Quay, Bulk Grain Pier, Refinery Pier and Point Henry Pier. The port’s trade figures in 2016-’17 were bolstered by favourable grain growing conditions across Victoria and southern New South Wales resulting in a large harvest in 2016. This generated over 2.3 million tonnes of grain exports through the port supplying customers across Asia, Europe and Africa. GrainCorp’s Geelong terminal achieved its highest ever month of exports in February 2017. In 2016 Victorian Regional Channels Authority introduced Dynamic Under Keel Clearance®

to the Geelong’s shipping channels. This software has allowed vessels to sail with up to 20cm additional draught. With the ability to load more cargo a number of records were set in 2016-’17 including: * Record cargoes loaded onto a vessel for wheat, barley, canola and woodchips; and * Grain, woodchip and crude oil vessels loading to a new maximum draught of 11.9m. Geelong Port is actively pursuing new trade opportunities to utilise their mix of multi-purpose berths, wharves and associated storage and processing facilities. GeelongPort’s holdings are well positioned and with the release of additional portside land, Geelong Port is well placed to facilitate the growth of the port. Growth in trade will result in further opportunities for the port to expand its economic and employment contribution to Geelong.

GDP Industries, providing employees a mix of trading skills and opportunities. 170723

Century of caring After more than a century of service, Tuckers Funeral and Bereavement Service continue the strong tradition of community support while providing quality care for families in their time of need. The company’s history dates back to the 1890s, and over the years Tuckers has grown from a small father and son operation into a company that now employs more than 40 local staff, bringing quality funeral care to the region. Reaching many organisations throughout Geelong, Tuckers community support has seen more than 80 local groups receive support in the past financial year. This support is through various sponsorships, donations and initiatives driven by the team at Tuckers. “We have always been a community-minded company, it is an important tradition we are proud to continue,” says Tuckers General Manag-

er Andrew Kors. “Investing in our local communities, we get involved by participating in events, sponsorships and donations - giving back to the community we live in.” Tuckers partner to support health and well-being services such as Barwon Health, St Laurence, and Diversitat. Arts and cultural events are also supported through sponsorships with GPAC, The Geelong Art Gallery, Pako Festa and the Geelong Show to name a few. Many smaller community groups also benefit such as sporting clubs, neighbourhood houses and local service groups. “In conjunction with various donations and sponsorships, we encourage our team to contribute, our people are part of the community and are serving on community boards and committees,” says Andrew. “It’s more than a social obligation, it’s who we are.”

Prestige Jayco Geelong is number one - and that’s official! The company has just been named as the number one motor home dealer in Australia and New Zealand for 2017. Prestige Jayco has been part of the fabric of the Geelong community for almost 30 years since the Spence family started its caravan repair business in the late 1980s. John and Joan Spence built their business from the ground up, expanding their centre to include sales and joined with the Jayco brand in 1990. The business has since grown to become a one-stop caravan dealership. Jayco sell the full range of camper trailers, caravans, expandas, pop tops, motor homes and leisure homes, as well as used RVs and a complete range of accessories and after sales care. The company has been making recreational vehicles in Australia since 1975 and all RVs are built here in Victoria at the purpose-built, Dandenong complex. General manager Tony Spence says it is the family atmosphere of the company which is its secret to success.

“We value our people, and it’s their attitude and feeling a part of the family that makes the difference,” Tony says. “We take great pride in promoting the Geelong, Bellarine and Surf Coast as a great destination to work, live, play and generate business. “And we are very enthusiastic about adding value to the Geelong region with our community involvement and sponsorships of fundraising organisations, or those helping the disadvantaged, as well as promoting tourism to the region with Tourism Greater Geelong.” “The company works in conjunction with Tourism Geelong and the Bellarine Big4 Caravan Park to promote tourism to the region and is involved in local events such as Give Where you Live Foundation; Surf Coast Trek and the Auction at the Mill promotion. “We actively promote and support local community involvement, health and wellness, support young men and women in sport and encourage active adults,” Tony says. “We also got on board with Geelong Connected Communities this year too.”

Local awnings and blinds manufacturer, Brax Window Treatments are celebrating 75 years of doing business in Geelong in 2017. A second generation family business, owned and operated by David and Cal Stewart, Brax have been proudly manufacturing in our region since 1942. Originally commencing making wooden rulers, small toys and knitting counters, the business started manufacturing Timber venetians around 1948 before expanding into all aspects of window furnishings and security screens and doors. Brax are proud of their history, but are prouder still to be manufacturing locally at a time when many of their competitors have taken their fabrication offshore. “Being able to manufacture locally gives us greater control and we believe it’s our main competitive advantage,” says David. “Geelong people

like to know that we are still making our products here. More than 75 per cent of everything we sell is made in our South Geelong factory,” he states. “And by manufacturing ourselves we can choose who we purchase from. We always endeavour to use components of the highest quality, and where possible, Australian made.” Brax are continuing to invest heavily in manufacturing. They have recently expanded their South Geelong facilities, to improve storage and workflow as well as implementing new software to enable electronic quoting and better tracking of jobs, with the ultimate aim of improving their service delivery to their customers. Where to now for Brax? “Who knows?” says David. “Like all businesses, we’ve always got work to do on improving everyday, it never stops.” To view the extensive range of Brax products, visit them at www.braxwt.com.au

Newtown’s Rollerway has skated its way into the record books. The company in Lambert Street is one of Australia’s longest operating skate centres. First opened in 1975, it has proven to be one of the most successful operations, used by tens of thousands of people every year. Some members of the present management have been either skating or playing at, or operating the centre since 1976. Owner Raul Aparicio is proud of his company’s track record as a market leader. “When we look at the records we have set we are very proud and this is a mighty achievement for Geelong as well,” Raul says. “We had around 5000 kids through the centre just in the last school holiday period so that gives you an idea of how popular we are in the family entertainment sector.” Raul says his centre specialises in providing the best experience in terms of children’s birthday parties specifically, and family entertainment, generally. “And we are probably the biggest developers of junior skating and roller hockey in Australia and New Zealand. We really do have more hockey than you can poke a stick at,” Raul says.

Power shock grows in city By Mandy Oakham Households unable to pay skyrocketing power bills are inundating Geelong welfare agencies with calls for help. The Salvos this week reported almost 8000 applications for help across the Barwon region over the past three months, up more than 30 per cent on the same time last year. The Salvos helped with 7732 instances of people needing financial help, compared to 5483 in 2016. SalvoConnect Barwon network director Lorrinda Hamilton said her agency was concerned about the impact of rising living costs on needy Geelong people, particularly the elderly and others on fixed incomes.

“Obviously we’re very concerned about the increase in financial distress that local people are facing,” Ms Hamilton said. “We had a single woman come in trying to survive on Newstart and when she talked to utility providers they were asking for a total of $202 a week for payments plans. Newstart for this woman was approximately $470 per week. “We had another person admitted to hospital as a result of anxiety and depression due to the exacerbation of their financial situation. “They were struggling to survive on a disability pension and were using credit cards to keep debt collectors at bay and to keep the utilities on.” Continued page 5

Terrorism ‘bollart’ lesson for mall, says researcher By Mandy Oakham A “people power” make-over could be a simple and cheap solution to Geelong’s inner-city image problem, according to a Deakin University researcher. Matt Novacevski wants to plant a few cactuses and a few simple ideas on how Geelong people could take control of their own streets, especially the mall area, to make the city feel safer and happier. Mr Novacevski wants Geelong people to look down the road and learn the lessons of the “bollart“ in the big smoke of Melbourne. What started out as a loud public outcry about huge ugly blocks of concrete being dumped on the streets had now turned into a chorus of appreciation as each day new colourful and humorous versions of the bollart appeared, he said. “It’s lovely to walk out of Southern Cross Railway Station and to see how people are interacting with these works of public art. “We need to bring joy back into our city streets and we need to take that responsibility on as people who live in this city, in other words - it has to be bottom up, not top down. “Walk around Lt Malop St and feel the difference in atmosphere to walking around the mall. It’s amazing what a difference some cactuses, other plants and wall paintings can make.” Mr Novacevski has been researching public places in the Geelong area and how to make people feel safer in them. His work alongside Dr Fiona Gray, an Adjunct Associate Professor at Deakin’s Centre for Regional and Rural Futures, has been centred on how “unkind architecture” affects public perceptions of safety. “If you walk through the city mall area what do you see? There are concrete walls, concrete walk ways, security grills, nothing for people to interact with,” Mr Novacevski said. “It’s time to give people back a sense that this is their space and it is easy to do small things, which if people think up for themselves then it gives them back a sense of security about their own public spaces.” Mr Novacevski said authorities should support and encourage the repurposing of Melbourne’s

Passenger killed A female passenger has died at the scene of a collision between a car and a truck at Lara, according to police. The car’s male driver was airlifted to hospital and the truckie was uninjured in the Bacchus Rd smash on Thursday morning, police said. Geelong businesses will “review their current recycling practices” after a fire this week at a Coolaroo waste facility, according to Corio Waste Management. The fire at SKM Recycling prevented its South Geelong facility, Geelong’s only plant handling mixed materials, from accepting commercial collections “in the foreseeable future”, the company said.

Criminal cash Geelong’s above-average rates of crime and “young recidivist offenders” has earned the city access to new grants for deterring criminal youths, the State Government has announced. Geelong would share in $7.6 million to help various communities in regional and suburban Victoria deal with repeat offending among 10 to 24-year-olds, the Government said.

Seal warning Recent seal landings at Torquay and Lorne have prompted a warning from authorities for onlookers to stay away from the protected animals. Seals’ sharp teeth and quick speeds over short distances gave them “potential to inflict serious injury”, said acting senior wildlife officer Doug Stevens.

“They could have got it anywhere. It could have been many years ago, decades ago.” Q fever is transmitted as an aerosol from animals to humans. The disease can cause flu-like system and, in rare cases, liver and heart problems. Reports on Wednesday linked the positive antibodies tests to council’s saleyards at North Geelong but City Hall told the Indy that none of the positive workers were employed at the facility. The council employed three full-time staff at

week’s summit of council and police leaders to discuss problems associated with Geelong’s mall. The summit is being called to discuss ways of improving behaviour in the mall.

the saleyards but each was either vaccinated or immune from Q fever, City Hall said. The past infections came to light only after the council encouraged staff to seek vaccinations following publicity of Q fever incidents elsewhere, Dr Harris said. “The council’s doing the right thing.” The Health Department confirmed that Geelong was clear of current notifications for Q fever. “The only outbreak in Geelong is an outbreak of testing,” a department spokesperson said.

CAUSE MY MUM’S SPECIAL

An Aboriginal word and a geographical reference have emerged as early suggestions to rename North Geelong Special Developmental School, according to state MP John Eren. Banyool School and Hamlyn View School were early contenders as State Government called for emailing of other suggestions to principal Suzanne Armstrong at Armstrong.suzanne.s@edumail.vic.gov.au, Mr Eren said.

Saleyards call Geelong’s council administrators have called for “the finalisation of community engagement” on the future of the city’s historic saleyards. City Hall said the three administrators expected to decide the yards’ fate at their 2 August meeting after the recent finalisation of council’s agribusiness strategy.

Q fever outbreak claim is testing experts’ patience A Q fever expert has rejected reports of an “outbreak” in Geelong. Twenty-five council workers who tested positive for Q fever antibodies could have had the disease any time in recent decades, said Geelong clinical microbiologist Dr Owen Harris. The workers could not be reinfected and had no risk of infecting anyone else, he said. “This is not an outbreak,” Dr Harris said. “This group of workers had Q fever in the past but have recovered. They are not sick now and won’t get Q fever again.

Double Take The Dandenong Ranges might have a crossbay challenger for the novelty of its Great Train Race, pitting runners against steam engine Puffing Billy each April. The Bellarine Peninsula will go one mode of historic transport better this summer when Sunset Marathon entrants test themselves against … a tall ship! Organisers announced this week that Enterprize (pictured), a Melbourne-based replica of Captain Cook’s famous vessel, would attend to add a maritime aspect to February’s 21km run between Portarlington and St Leonards. The Bellarine Sunset Run was already a “unique experience” for its route through seaside towns, organiser Dion Milne explains. “Now, having the Enterprize in sight and the chance to actually try to race it is sure to add to the excitement,” Dion says. Presumably the runners remain on land when racing the ship.

They say politicians would attend the opening of a chocolate bar if media cameras were present. So Double Take wonders how local MP Sarah Henderson fared for attention this week when she invited all and sundry to attend her “Celebration of the switching on of the new Yeodene mobile phone tower”. That would be at the farming locality of Yeodene, tucked away in the Otways between Warncoot and Gerangamete. For the commissioning of a phone tower. A worthy piece of infrastructure, no doubt, but hopefully it came with a phone box to host Sarah’s “celebration”.

Meanwhile, new Geelong tenant WorkSafe has launched a three-year program against workplace bullying. Given the authority’s new office is nearing completion diagonally opposite City Hall, management can at least expect some savings on transport to presentations. Maybe they could go further and extend that to phones with a string between two tin cans! After that mild mockery, City Hall does deserve some credit this week for its latest sportsground naming. Out goes the uninspiring Eastern Park Oval Number Four and in comes David Hickinbotham Oval, in honour of the Cats’ 1880s champion and captain. Makes a nice change to Surf Coast, where the fashion is tongue-twisters such as Djilla Tjarri Play and Skate Zone. And finally, surely this week’s so-called “outbreak” of Q fever is the final dirty nail in the coffin of North Geelong's saleyards. News that 25 council workers once had the animal-born disease, albeit incorrectly linked to the saleyards, comes as council administrators grapple with the inevitable decision to relocate the historic, crumbling facility with the massive maintenance bill. The fact it’s now also been unfairly tarnished as an incubator of interspecies nastiness smack bang in the middle of an urban area - should seal the deal. After all, the workers might have caught the disease elsewhere but perceptions are still important. And anyway, surely City Hall would like to avoid the risk of panicked residents in North Geelong - and possibly Rippleside, Drumcondra, Geelong West and Norlane at least - enquiring about free Q fever vaccinations!

Debt struggles strain support From page 1

SOMEWHERE TO CALL HOME: Sarah Henderson, at rear, with Baptcare representatives and residents of Geelong’s northern suburbs at the launch of the housing project.

Key to affordable future By Mandy Oakham A $43.5 million housing project has officially opened in a welcome boost to northern Geelong’s shortage of affordable homes. Baptcare’s Norlane Integrated Community project would provide housing for low-income families, people with disabilities and older members of the community, said Regional Development Minister Fiona Nash. “This new facility is a great investment in Norlane that will make a difference to the lives of many locals,” she said. “I’m proud of this investment in Geelong.” Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson welcomed the much-needed facility in Geelong’s northern suburbs.

“Combatting homelessness is an important priority for the Coalition Government. We’re delighted to partner with Baptcare to provide this much-needed support which will transform lives,” Ms Henderson said. “The 52 affordable rental houses can accommodate up to 91 people and include purpose-built housing for people with disabilities. “Twenty of the units have been completed and tenanted with the remainder to be finished by the end of 2017.” Baptcare acting chief executive Kate Barber said this development realised Baptcare’s vision of providing housing that was well-located and of quality construction yet affordable to lowerincome households. “The housing shortage in Victoria is extreme,”

Ms Barber said. “The state has only 3.4 per cent of social housing, the lowest in Australia. “On any given night in Australia one in 200 people are homeless. “The chronic shortage of affordable rental housing is a leading cause of this homelessness.” “Our goal with these units is to improve access to affordable integrated communities for disadvantaged people, as well as creating a community where residents can participate fully in life and live independently, with rent adjusted to tenants’ income.” Baptcare put $36.25 million into the project, with the Commonwealth providing $7.25 million.

“The situation escalated to over $25,000 worth of debt, most of which was related to interest, fees and charges.” Ms Hamitlon said a SalvoConnect client with an intellectual disability was distressed over a threatened disconnection but continued receiving threats despite offering proof of making fortnightly payments. The company disconnected the client’s supply but had to pay $3000 compensation after a successful complaint to the Energy and Water Ombudsman, she said. The company had been crediting the fortnightly payments to an incorrect meter number. The hardship stories follow an Indy report that rising power price were hampering Viva Energy’s efforts to make Corio’s oil refinery viable. Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry chief James Pearson, formerly a senior executive in the oil and gas industry, visited the refinery on Thursday to discuss issues including the impact of rising power prices. “Households and businesses are paying for our energy policy mess,” he said. “While households in Geelong and across Australia are feeling the impacts of energy price rises, small and large businesses have been hit with even greater increases. “For smaller businesses in Victoria, the energy regulator is reporting retail prices have gone up by around 10 per cent so far this year, with the prospect of more to come. For bigger businesses, wholesale prices have increased by around 80 per cent. “Businesses in Geelong, and the rest of the country, are not necessarily in a position to pass on these price rises - inflation is low and people are very price conscious at the moment. High energy prices are making it harder for businesses to invest and create jobs.” 12357375-HM29-17

HISTORY REPEATED The rise and rise of the Costa family

Illegal dumping in forests and parks has left authorities with a $10,000 clean-up bill on the Surf Coast. Construction waste, old cars and mattresses were among hard-rubbish plaguing the coast over the past financial year, state departments said. Parks Victoria and Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning spent “close to $10,000 on removal costs over the 12 months, they said. “Our parks and forests are maintained for the enjoyment of the community, (so) it’s disappointing that an inconsiderate few are treating these areas as a dumping ground,” Surf Coast chief ranger Peter Hay said. “In the last 12 months, valuable staff time has been used for disposing of a significant amount of rubbish, from construction waste and car parts to mattresses and microwaves. “We’ve removed five cars (that) were dumped across the Anglesea Heath and the Great Otway National Park. “Tyres are often discarded in our forests and parks, which is a cause for concern. In addition to being a fire hazard, tyres contain toxic chemicals (that) can leach into the environment.” Dumped green waste was also causing problems between Anglesea and Lorne’s, Mr Hay said. “While taking our staff time to collect, transport and dispose of the green waste appropriately, there’s also the potential for this waste to introduce weed species to the natural environment.” The money spent on removing the rubbish could instead have paid for “maintaining and improving facilities”, senior forest management and roading officer Craig Clifford said.

“Leaving rubbish in our forests and parks shows no regard for other visitors, our staff, native animals and the environment,” Mr Clifford said. “Our staff monitor known hotspots and work with Victoria Police on any information that can be provided by the public.” Mr Clifford urged anyone with information about illegal dumping to phone the EPA on 1300 372 842 or the environment department’s customer service centre on 136 186. On-the-sport fines of $317 apply for littering or dumping in national or forest parks. Offenders also face prosecution and a maximum penalty of $6342 under the Environment Protection Act. Illegal dumping has become a widespread problem across the region in recent years. The Indy has reported on various dumping hot spots in the past few years, ranging from train tracksides at Lara to op shops in Geelong and beach foreshore near Torquay. Greater Geelong voters have previously linked the municipality’s lack of hard-rubbish collections to illegal dumping, using 2012’s council elections to call for restoration of the service. City Hall ran one hard-rubbish collection in the years after council amaglamations in 1993 but has ruled out another due to the expense. In February 2013, then-councillor Andy Richards said a hard-rubbish collection for greater Geelong would cost “millions“. He ruled out the service returning despite City Hall spending $350,000 collecting dumped hard rubbish in the first eight months of the 2012/2014 financial year.

Darby has worked for the City for seven years and is the Waste and Education Projects Officer. Darby works with Greater Geelong residents in managing and reducing their kerb side waste through education on what is and isn’t recyclable and the importance of recycling. With the landfill site at Drysdale predicted to be full in 10 years’ time, management of our recycling and waste is vitally important.

Darby loves seeing the positive impact that some of the City’s recycling programs are having. A recent mattress recycling program in June saw almost 2000 mattresses recycled. This was a huge increase from the usual amount of 300. When not educating the public on recycling, Darby loves to walk his dogs on the beach, but is watching less football this year with his team Collingwood not doing so well.

JULY IS DISCOUNTED CAT DESEXING MONTH This month we are partnering with 12 local vets to offer residents discounted desexing services for cats. It’s a sad fact that each year thousands of cats in Victoria are abandoned because of unplanned breeding and unwanted litters. Most of these cats are perfectly healthy but unfortunately many don’t find homes. That’s why it’s so important to desex your cats. Desexing your cat offers many benefits, including reducing the risk of territorial behaviour, diseases and unwanted litters. It also reduces the costs associated with caring for a growing number of kittens in our pounds and animal shelters. Finally, desexed cats generally live longer and healthier lives. Digging in spades Work has officially begun on a $120 million building to accommodate hundreds more public servants in central Geelong. Federal Social Services Minister Christian Porter turned the first sod on the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) headquarters on Wednesday, promising “hundreds of local jobs” during construction. The building would house 560 NDIA staff along with colleagues from other Commonwealth departments, he said. “With NDIA national office staff currently split across several locations in Geelong, the new building will increase the efficiency of head office operations and make it easier for NDIS participants to access information and support,” Mr Porter said. The building, on Malop St, will incorporate the heritage-listed Carlton Hotel. Construction is due for completion in late 2018. The NDIS will neighbour a WorkSafe headquarters under construction and set to employ

around 700 staff after opening in 2018. The NDIA and WorkSafe offices follow the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) opening a new headquarters with 650 staff in central Geelong eight years ago. Australian Bureau of Statistics expects to employ about 300 people at its new national data acquisition office, which opened in Geelong last year. The NDIA office’s proximity to the TAC, WorkSafe and Deakin University’s Waterfront campus would “add to the region’s insurance, education and research precinct”, said Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson. The new office would also cement Geelong’s position as “a centre of excellence for disability and personal injury insurance”, she said. “The NDIA is working with the City of Greater Geelong to make access routes to the building and connections to transport and services more accessible.”

Mum is ‘last resort’ cure An Ocean Grove mum’s own mother will be her “last resort” without a better blood marrow donor materialising before cancer treatment next month. Allison Daly is preparing for Sandra’s halfmatch marrow in a bid to prevent her rare cancer turning acute. A worldwide search of 30 million potential donors has yet to find a better match. Allison’s leukaemia myelofibrosis could claim her life within four years without successful treatment. She will undergo the transplant on 23 August. The illness forced Allison to finish her job at the TAC in Geelong earlier this month. This week former colleagues responded, dressing as superheroes in support as the TAC encouraged participants to become bone marrow donors. The support touched Allison deeply. “The most beautiful souls work here and I truly believe that and the management at TAC really do follow what they say,” she said. “They say they care for lives and they really do, not just the people that we don’t know but the people who work here.” Allison welcomed the support but was concerned about the impact of her illness on fiveyear-old daughter Darci. “She’s doing okay,” Allison said. “She’s learning that Mumma is sick and mum’s blood is not working properly, but thankfully other than that she’s as completely oblivious as a five-year-old should be.” Sandra praised Allison’s spirit. “It’s been so hard for her to be told she’s only got three to four years to live unless they find a bone marrow match but she’s got a little girl who’s five,” Sandra said. “It’s been a struggle for her emotionally apart from the fact that she gets very tired because it’s in her blood. But she’s a fighter and she’s a positive person and I think her generous spirit and the fact that she’s positive will get her through.

WE CAN BE HEROES: Allison Daly, right, with mum Sandra and daughter Darci at the TAC’s Hero for a Day in Geelong on Wednesday. (Reg Ryan) “I’m only a 50 percent match but they haven’t found a better match than me. “Allison’s between a rock and a hard place. If she doesn’t go with this transplant she’s only got as few as three years or her disease will get gradually worse and worse, so what’s the choice. “If she waits too long then it can manifest itself

into acute leukaemia and then they can do nothing for her, so she really doesn’t have a choice of waiting because in the last 12 months she has deteriorated.” Donations to assist Allison are being accepted online at gofundme.com/allisondaly.

Funding boost to Barwon Health Barwon Health funding will increase almost four times the rate of inflation this financial year to meet rising demand, State Government has announced. Barwon Health would receive $509 million from state-wide “bottom-line budget allocations” of $18 billion in 2017/2018, the government said. Barwon Health’s allocation was up $38.73 million, or 8.2 per cent, on the previous year. Geelong would benefit from the state’s $18 billion “record investment” in services ranging from hospitals to ambulances and aged care, said Health Minister Jill Hennessey. “This record boost means better hospitals and efficient care that is first class and accessible, no matter where you live,” she said. Local State Labor MPs were quick to praise the additional cash for Barwon Health. “In Geelong we are opening more beds, more theatres and reducing waits for surgery and emergency care which is all about putting patients first,” said Member for Geelong Christine Couzens. Member for Bellarine Lisa Neville said the funding boost would help “our dedicated doctors and nurses” perform their “remarkable job at Barwon Health”. “This record boost gives them the support they need to keep saving lives and keep people in Geelong healthy,” she said. Member for Lara John Eren, who was treated at Geelong hospital for a heart attack last year, also welcomed the funding boost. “We’re making the investments our health services and workers deserve to give all families in Geelong the care they need, when they need it most,” he said. But the opposition criticised Ms Hennessey’s announcement as inadequate. “Barwon Health has been operating in an environment of great uncertainty which this funding announcement does not solve,” said Shadow Health Minister Mary Wooldridge.

Letters Chamber marked down on CBD What’s a pass mark for Geelong Chamber Of Commerce? While it’s a fair call from Darryn Lyons that Committee for Geelong, despite various overseas trips, has failed to bring "a single dollar into Geelong” (Indy, 14 July), does the chamber, accountability-wise, also walk the talk? The chamber has supported CBD parking charge increases, which have employers, employees and consumers calling for a City of Greater Geelong review. Allied to that cash-grab, shouldn’t the chamber in its CBD patch be more pro-active on an essential 7am-to-7pm CBD curfew on heavy vehicles? Isn’t it another fail by the chamber that Bill Votsaris is considering standing at the October council elections to provide a voice for Little Malop Street entrepreneurs? While the Chamber’s After Five series, implemented by the committed and late Reg Fisher, continues to provide commendable networking opportunities and members access to bigger-picture motivational speakers, how on balance does that play out against the chamber’s unrequited support for the abolition of Sunday penalty rates, which further marginalises casual workers? Furthermore, while ownership of the CBD’s ghetto strips of unoccupied shops isn’t solely a chamber indictment, how has it been going incrementally about engendering a brighter tomorrow? Are we paying for bullies? Some Geelong ratepayers feel that the sacked councillors shouldn’t stand for council again. I believe that previous councillors should have the right to stand again after ratepayers/taxpayers are given the respect of full disclosure in regards to the findings of Susan Halliday’s complaints review committee. It was reported in May 2016 that interim administrator Yehudi Blacher made it clear the details of the reports were sealed, with even City of Greater Geelong’s chief executive officer unaware of the details.

The science has resettled Why are the media and the government not reporting new statements by leading scientists that the initial global warming predictions were probably

Email: editorial@geelongindependent.com.au 78 Moorabool St, Geelong, 3220 Fax: 5249 6799 grossly exaggerated, with no temperature increase over the past 10 years? They have also stated that “internal variability” means C02 is unlikely to be responsible for global warming. Leading scientists now admit that if Australia reduced its C02 omissions to zero, the effects on global temperatures would be nothing. The media and politicians have always maintained they would follow the science, so why is second-rate media influencing second-rate politicians to continue sabotaging Australia’s economy, industry and jobs with exorbitant power costs, all for nothing? Equalising Aussies to extinction The Turnbull Government is drifting further left, as typified by its plan to increase the number of women in the workforce by 200,000 by 2025. Minister for Women Michaelia Cash announced the plan, to cost $2.5 billion and include increased places in childcare and four-year-old preschool. Why is the push to get more women into the workforce when over 400,000 traditional male jobs in manufacturing have been lost, especially in the auto industry? Also, Australia’s birth-rate is 1.7 children per woman of child-bearing age, so the nation’s population increases have to be imported as a result. Given these facts, the government’s decision goes completely in the wrong direction. The Coalition government, under Turnbull, has mirrored the leftist policies of Labor and, despite assertions to the contrary, men and family life have been left out in the cold. In 1989 Australia signed the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Article nine stated: “States’ parties shall ensure that a child shall not be separated from his or her parents”. But now the government funds the separation of children from parents and plans to expand the opportunities for so doing. Women have the ear of government while male needs and aspirations have been completely frozen out of the political landscape. Alan Barron Grovedale

Geelong Refinery update Message from Thys Heyns

General Manager Refining

Viva Energy will celebrate its third birthday next month and we are proud of what we have achieved at the Geelong Refinery. We have invested $250M, developed a clear improvement plan, completed two major maintenance turnarounds (worth $150M), and commenced investments in much needed growth projects for the future. To help share our story we have recently published a booklet titled Investing in Local Manufacturing that outlines what we are going to do, how we are going to do it and what we have already achieved. I invite you to take a look at a copy of this document on our website.

in support of a team member whose family has been personally affected by the disease, spent their own time to strip copper waste from electrical cables and sell it to a recycler. I was also proud when Viva Energy announced our support for the Council for Aboriginal Alcohol Program Services (CAAPS) with a three-year $300,000 deal for their Volatile Substance Misuse Program. This support for CAAPS aligns with our commitment to invest in community programs that address petrol sniffing and substance misuse. It is especially significant for us at Geelong Refinery as we produce the

low aromatic fuel distributed to remote and Indigenous communities across northern Australia which is successfully decreasing petrol sniffing in those areas. Finally, many people at the refinery are getting ready for Viva Energy’s first ever public Open Day on 13 August. The refinery is a large, complex and fascinating manufacturing facility and we look forward to opening our doors to show the community how we safely and reliably supply over half of Victoria’s fuel. It’s going to be a great day out and all the details are on our website. I look forward to seeing many of you there.

Earlier this year we announced the outcome of a review which sets out a blueprint to modernise the refinery’s Operations organisation and bring it in line with competition. Safety has been at the forefront of the review and will continue to be as we move into the next stage of this work to make the refinery sustainable for the long term. Many things make me proud of the team here at the refinery. One example was the recent $30,000 donation by Viva Energy presented to the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Foundation on the Footy Show. This money was raised due to the initiative of a group of employees who,

REFINERY NEWS

Local production Manufacture has begun of the refinery’s first new solvent product since the 1980s - Vivasol X55, which is widely used for processing, cleaning and degreasing in the paint, printing and rubber manufacturing industries. The Geelong Refinery is well-known for manufacturing niche products and is the only refinery in Australia producing solvents, bitumen and avgas.

I’m proud campaign The newest addition to the refinery’s I’m Proud campaign can’t be missed if you travel by train past the refinery. A 100 metre long sign along our fence line is reminding commuters of reasons we’re proud of our refinery.

The addition of Vivasol X55 to our suite of locally produced products is a demonstration that we can adapt to changing customer and market conditions and highlights the benefit of retaining traditional manufacturing in Geelong.

New crude oil tank Even though we didn’t find a pot of black gold under the rainbow, our new $50M crude tank is continuing to proceed well. With the capacity of 40 Olympic swimming pools, the 100 million litre tank is now at its full height of 21 metres

and is currently being painted white to match the other five crude oil tanks in the western tank farm. Once this is complete the tank will be tested, connected and commissioned ready to be fully operational by the end of the year.

COMMUNITY WRAP UP

In the Community

Last year we introduced Jigsaw, our community program that’s investing $3M over three years to support mental health and substance misuse issues both nationally and specially within Geelong communities.

Good deeds week Every year people from nearly 100 countries unite to do good deeds for others as part of globally acclaimed Good Deeds Day. Employees at Viva Energy, the first Australian corporate to commit to Good Deeds Day, magnified the initiative to create Good Deeds Week. More than 750 Viva Energy employees across Australia donated over 650 hours to participate in 1,100 good deeds. And, more than $17,000 was raised for charitable organisations.

2017 Role Model Grants – Now Open Do you know someone who needs support to continue their good work? Each year we invite Geelong’s notfor-profit organisations or registered education facilities to apply for role model grants of up to $5,000.

Applications are now open for this years’ grants to support the work of role models within our community who address mental illness, substance abuse or breaking the poverty cycle through education. Apply at vivaenergy.com.au/ community by 20 November 2017.

Standout contributions from teams at the refinery included the donation of 40 valves to WPC Group apprentices and Viva Energy matching a $4,000 donation by WPC Group to Very Special Kids; the Refinery’s leadership team cooked 1,500 sausages raising $2,380 for The Council for Aboriginal Alcohol Program Services (CAAPS), Red Cross and UNICEF and over 35 members of staff donating blood at the Australia Blood Bank just to name a few.

$10K for Corio withdrawal centre A $10,000 Viva Energy grant has given a house operated by SalvoConnect’s Geelong Residential Withdrawal Unit, a much needed makeover. The house helps SalvoConnect clients in their journey from substance misuse

to a better life. It’s the only free adult drug and alcohol residential withdrawal unit within a vast geographic catchment; from the Western suburbs of Melbourne to the South Australian border, it provides 400 episodes of much needed care every year.

Local sports support We are proud to announce our new Northern suburbs sports club sponsorships. This is an exciting new part of our community program offering over $100,000 in sponsorship for local teams in the four highest participation sports of soccer, AFL, netball and cricket as well as support for the Geelong Cats Next Generation program.

You’re invited to our Open Day We are excited to invite Geelong residents to come and see how fuel is made on Sunday, August 13 for our first Open Day. Designed as a day for the whole family the Open Day will include refinery bus tours, more than 30 refinery information stalls, booths manned by our valued community partners, numerous free kids’ activities as well as plenty of food and entertainment. There’s even a chance to win two Sandown Supercar Hot Laps and

to meet major sporting celebrities including Supercar drivers Fabian Coulthard and Scott McLaughlin from the Shell V-Power Racing team, racing legend Dick Johnson and Andrew Mackie from the Geelong Cats.

Participation in local sports is a great way to reduce stress, improve health and wellbeing, and strengthen community bonds. That’s why we think supporting local sport is a perfect new piece of our Jigsaw puzzle which seeks to promote mental health and positive role models.

Duo takes on the King’s Tapestry By Luke Voogt Australian music icon Debra Byrne cringes when she remembers her first time singing the music of Carole King. Byrne sang It’s Too Late as a nervous 14-yearold on Young Talent Time in 1971. “I can’t bear to hear it,” she told the Indy Tuesday. “I’m sure I’d do it a whole lot better with a whole lot of life experience behind me.” She and fellow music veteran Vika Bull will perform the music of King’s legendary 1971 album Tapestry in Geelng next month. “I’ve adored Carole King and that genre of music since I was 13,” she said. “It’s pretty much going back to my musical roots.” “Carole King doesn’t write to get on the radio; she writes because it’s all coming from her heart. That is why I love her. The Tapestry regional tour is the first time the two have worked together. “I absolutely love working with Vika,” Byrne said. “She’s a very straight-forward and intelligent musical women. The pair will belt out classics like I Feel The Earth Move, You’ve Got A Friend, A Natural Woman and Will You Love Me Tomorrow. “Vika and I both have very powerful voices, so it’s not a problem for us,” she said. “They’re very special songs I think - lyrically they are very truthful and no-nonsense.” Byrne is long-time theatre and television actress - most recently appearing in ABC’s Upper Middle Bogan. But she scaled her career to become a carer for her two grandchildren - one who has special needs. “He’s adorable, but hard work,” she said. While two of her daughters are in their thir-

teacher at Nelson Park School with special needs students. “That was really fun,” she said. “I really enjoyed that.” Byrne said now that she was able to leave her grandson with other carers, she could get back out on the road. “It’s been a great thing for my soul. I get to have

some me time and perform.” She looked forward to returning to Geelong Performing Arts Centre on 4 August, where she had “performed heaps of times”. “It’s kind of the soundtrack of people’s lives,” she says. “To take Tapestry far and wide will be a joy.

By Mandy Oakham Veteran entertainer Rodney Vincent has shared the stage with The Platters, The Deltones and Freddie and the Dreamers. And he has shared his talent as a songwriter with legendary rock n roller Gene Pitney. A one night, guest performance with Pitney led to a personal invitation to be his guest on his last three Australian tours. Not only was Rodney honoured to work with such a great international artist, but also he received the rare opportunity to write and record the song, What a Big Surprise, with Pitney. Rodney, who has recently released his new album Heart and Soul, will be performing at the Sphinx next Wednesday in his special Xmas in July show. “I do a little bit country, a little bit of comedy and a little bit of rock n roll,” Mr Vincent says. “And, of course, I do a tribute to Gene Pitney, so there is definitely something for everybody in the show. “I like to sing, but I like to laugh so everyone who comes along is guaranteed a good time,” he said. Rodney’s standing in the Australian entertainment scene is no accident. It is the result of a long, hard apprenticeship which he says “started a while a go”. From his first engagement playing guitar in an old time dance band at his local hall, to New Faces where he got his first big break, Rodney has survived the highs and the lows of the industry. After his appearance on the New Faces, Rodney joined the Channel Nine Singers on the In Melbourne

MELODIES: Rodney Vincent plays the Sphinx next week. Tonight show which featured Graham Kennedy, Ugly Dave Grey, Bert Newton and other household names. On the demise of the Tonight show, Rodney teamed with Terry Gill to form Double Tempo, a duo who performed both on television and the cabaret circuit around Australia. After a variety of music hall, theatre and band work, Rodney embarked on his solo career. He also joined one of Australia’s greatest comedians, Col Elliott, not only as his special guest but also played the straight man to many of Col’s characters. The world of comedy added another string to his bow, and the refreshing aspect of his routine is that it centres on good clean fun. Rodney Vincent’s reputation for being a genuine, all-round entertainer has been exemplified in recent years by the fact that he has a terrific following. This loyal following extends from small shows in community halls to national venues.

Low-impact collisions typical in shopping centre car parks are annoying to say the least. Add to this the fact that people rarely own up to damaging other people’s cars. It has been noticed that drivers are often scared to back-up any further due to very limited vision. These are the occasions where reverse sensors are very welcome. Bumper Master fits reversing sensors to help customers overcome fears of backing into objects or even pedestrians. Reversing sensors help prevent damage to owners’ cars as well as the vehicles of neighbours and other motorists. They can also help when backing out of tight garages and past narrow gateposts. Bumper Master can also help owners improve the appearance of bumpers when selling vehicles. Bumpers are the first part of any car to incur damage – and first impressions are important when trying to sell. All Bumper Master repairs come with a no-questions-asked warranty to give customers peace of mind. Best of all, most bumper repairs are done for less than the cost of insurance excesses. Located behind VicRoads at 3 Dowsett St, South Geelong, Bumper Master has proven experience in providing an alternative repair service to the bumper regions of any car. Owners wanting to improve the resale value of their cars should phone Bumper Master on 5221 0138.

SPORT Cats will go distance with Crows By Mandy Oakham Cats coach Chris Scott is alert but definitely not alarmed about his team’s home game advantage turning into a disadvantage. Talking at this week’s pre-game media conference, Scott said that he was aware of the commentary being made about Geelong’s ability to win the big games at the MCG. “We are definitely aware of the commentary, and that’s exactly why we have practice sessions out at Deakin where the ground is exactly the same size as the MCG,” Scott said. “We have to be prepared to win on the narrower grounds like Geelong and Adelaide, but of course we have to prepare for the wider grounds like the MCG.” Scott predicted that win or lose the big top-ofthe-ladder clash between Geelong and Adelaide this round, that neither team would emerge as being “psychologically damaged”. Scott told the media conference that the possibility of Paddy Dangerfield playing in the Adelaide clash was “still live”. Dangerfield was expected to fly out with the team, as was Scott Selwood and Tom Stewart was also expected to play, albeit with a helmet due to his recent eye injury. Andrew Mackie was also expected to play. “If we get knocked over this week, we will not be coming back psychologically damaged,” Scott said. “Every team this year, no matter where they are on the ladder, know that we are all going to be in a bit of a scrap to the finish. “A loss to either team at this stage of the season won’t be completely destructive to either side.” Scott singled out Lachie Henderson as being

ALERT: Chris Scott contemplates the remaining season ahead. Picture: REBECCA HOSKING Geelong's surprise package this season. “Hendo has proven to be a really, really valuable player for us this season. Lachie has proven himself to be a real team player and very flexible about fitting in with our systems at Geelong,” Scott said. “I think his ball use was probably under-rated before he came to us, but he has become a very valuable player for us.” Scott said win or lose, his team was looking forward to playing over at Adelaide. “It is a great atmosphere over there, and with two teams at the top of the ladder it will be a great experience for our younger players to be exposed to that high-pressure situation.” Scott told the conference that the club had decided to take a more “conservative” approach to Nakia Cockatoo’s injuries. He said Cockatoo was “close” but still had a “few niggly issues”.

NIGGLES: Nakia Cockatoo faces a "conservative" approach to his return from injury, says coach Chris Scott.

Anglers hone in on Corio Bay hot spot to hook into salmon catch ON THE BITE Chris Pitman

1238631-RC32-16

Anglers caught Australian salmon around Corio Bay’s inner-harbour over the past week while casting soft plastics hard against structure. The yacht club was a hot spot but anglers reported salmon captures from Limeburner’s Point boat ramp right along the waterfront to North Shore. The odd winter snapper was also on offer for anglers willing to put in the time. The humble pilchard and a light burley trail produced the goods for anyone prepared to brave the cold while anchored at dark. Pinkies were also present, found in close to Geelong’s waterfront where they responded well to soft plastics and blue bait. Clifton Springs hosted exceptional squid fishing in terms of both quality and quantity. Quality bags were taken on size 3.5 jigs all the way around to St Leonards.

Queenscliff Harbour’s silver trevally action picked up. Anglers fishing worm or grub-style soft plastics around high or low slack tide caught trevally throughout the harbour. Anglers fishing the harbour’s ferry end of the channel also reported quality King George whiting captures on squid and pippie. Casting out toward the deeper water at the start or end of the ebb tide produced some quality bags of whiting, with the chance of a trevally as well. Local surf beaches continued offering some fantastic fish for salmon. Anglers casting 20g to 50g metal lures were rewarded with quality fish. Hot spots for surf fishing included Bancoora, the Barwon River estuary mouth and beaches near Anglesea right through to Marengo near Apollo Bay. Surf Coast estuaries fished well for bream. Scrub worms, freshwater yabbies and crabs were the baits of choice for fish of excellent size and condition. Anglers did best in the deeper sections of

GRASSED: A pair of Chris Pitman's latest break from Surf Coast estuaries. water and with the lightest weight as conditions allowed. Lake Bolac remained on the radar, with anglers still finding good-sized rainbow trout from 1kg to 2kg, although the action was slower than

in previous weeks. Powerbait worked well for anglers fishing from the bank, while trolling small, hard-body lures was successful for boaties. Kayak anglers reported exceptional trout and redfin from Cobden’s Lake Elingamite, with the water level less than ideal for boats. Casting or trolling minnow-style lures produced great results. Wurdee Buloc Reservoir remained the pick for local anglers. Redfin to more than 1kg were caught on three-inch Flash J minnow soft plastics rigged on 1/4oz jig heads, along with metal spoon-style lures cast out as far as possible and retrieved slowly. Anglers who fished in first light had the best chance of snagging the trophy-sized trout available at Wurdee Boluc this time of year.
