meaning it is more comfortable to stand on for long periods of time and is quieter. With the trend now to move away from floating floors, vinyl loose lay planks is not only durable, but 100 per cent waterproof so new floor will look amazing for many years to come. Foam best to beat the leaves The Gutter Protector foam wedge gutter guard was first used in America about 15 years ago with great success. At that time, it was one of the most talked about products on American talk shows. It’s now also used widely throughout Europe and Canada, again with the

same great success. Finally, it is here in Australia, first introduced to Melbourne as Gutter Guard Melbourne and now supplying the whole of Australia as Gutter Protector Australia. The gutter guards are specialised filtering foam that has been used in

filtering water in all sorts of industries for many decades; it cannot absorb or hold water due to its specialised cell structure, and water just flows straight through gutter guard into your clean gutters, making it the best gutter guard available. Gutter guards contains a UV formula to prevent cell degradation from

the sun, a biocide formula to prevent the formation of mold, algae and the growth of seeds. It also contains a premium fire retardant which has been CSIRO tested to Australian Standard Flammability Test AS 1530-3-1999 - all these additives have been added in the mix of the foam during production, so are all

locked in throughout the product and will last for the lifespan of the foam. The foam wedge gutter guard's rain handling capacity is rated at 10 times the standard rainfall; this capacity is essential to be able to cope with large water flow coming down from your roof valleys, making Gutter Protector the perfect gutter guard system.

Ph:1300 551 451 WWW.GUTTERPROTECTOR.COM.AU Prevent this from happening to your home with Gutter Protector AUTUMN IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER DON’T LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOUR HOME

Each year thousands of Aussie homes are damaged from blocked gutters causing water to flow back into the wall cavity of your home, internal walls, carpets and tiling will be damaged, but even worse water back flowing into your wall cavities can also make contact with electrical circuitry and start a fire.

Gutter Protector has design a new revolutionary Gutter Guard. Gutter protector has been scientifically designed to create the ultimate gutter guard protection. Over the last 15 years Gutter guard mesh foam has dominated the American (USA) gutter market, and NOW it’s available in Australia. Gutter Protector is a specialized foam system that has had its cell structure modified converting it into a foam mesh, allow-ing enormous amounts of water to pour through.

A plot for canny gardeners Have you ever thought about investing in a plot? A garden plot, that is! Community gardens are flourishing in the city and suburbs where house blocks are small and there’s often no room for the traditional vegie garden out the back ... or the front! While most households across the Yarra Valley and the Dandenong Ranges still have enough backyard to put in the odd garden bed and fruit tree or two, the increase in unit develop-

ment and dual-occupancy means that for some, the pleasure of growing and picking from your own garden bed is no longer feasible. But space is not the only reason to buy into a community garden. There are almost as many reasons for getting together with like-minded gardeners in a communal space, as there are weeds! Community gardens increase a sense of community ownership and stewardship, bring people of different

backgrounds and ages together, and make fresh, seasonal herbs, vegetables and fruit available at a low cost. Community gardening is a healthy, inexpensive activity for young, old and everyone in between allowing interaction between the generations in a socially meaningful and physically productive way. They promote shared knowledge, encourage sustainable, chemical-free food production, reduce food miles and the vegies just taste a whole lot better.

There are several community-run gardens dotted about Yarra Ranges communities and they welcome newcomers and volunteers. Firing up for a warmer winter By Derek Schlennstedt Fire. The word resonates with residents throughout the Yarra Ranges and can bring back memories of Black Saturday and Ash Wednesday. Each year in spring, residents in fire-prone areas clean up their gardens and remove plants to reduce the risk of fire. But, just because you may live in a fire risk location, does not mean you have to sacrifice a bright and welcoming garden.

The Ash Wednesday Bushfire Education Centre (AWBEC) in Cockatoo has constructed an interactive fire-wise garden to prove not all fire-wise plants are dull and boring. “No plant is fireproof, and all will burn but some are more resistant to heat,” Graham Simpson, Chairperson at AWBEC, said. The new fire-wise garden is designed to help educate the community on how to implement a fire-wise garden and re-

duce loads. With pebbles offering much more resistance than flammable mulch and various small but bright plants, the fire-wise garden offers a perfect example of how to beautify and reduce fire risk around your property. “It’s to pick plants that don’t readily ignite, what this firewise garden does is that it has signs with a QR code, which will take you to the CFA website which can tell you if your plants at home have a low or

moderate fire risk,” he said. “These plants are all designed so they don’t touch each other, so the fire can’t jump to the next one.” All the plants at the AWBEC fall into the low to moderate fire

risk range and many are native indigenous plants, which are perfect for attracting wildlife and bird life to your backyard. Some of the plants include winter delight grevilleas, birthday candle banksias, bright and

colourful lily pillies, and succulent red kangaroo paw. Graham said it was not difficult to create a firewise garden and that anyone could do it with plants readily available and reasonable priced.

Chance to detox your home Disposing of unwanted and out-ofdate household chemicals in a safe way is difficult for many families and households. The Detox Your Home household chemical collection service this August gives the chance to get rid of common chemicals around the house, shed or garage without harming health or the environment. The next scheduled collection takes place at Lilydale on Saturday 26 August.

The site address and specific time to drop off unwanted chemicals (between 9am and 3pm) will be provided when registering by filling out an online form at detox.sustainability.vic. gov.au. Register to select a preferred time slot and avoid a long queue. Most people know that it’s simply not safe to throw chemical products out with regular rubbish collection. The products could explode, ig-

nite, leak or mix with other chemicals. Pouring them down the drain is not a solution because the chemicals could pollute waterways, harming wildlife and vegetation, contaminating drinking water supply and making rivers and beaches unsafe for swimming. Detox Your Home is easy and it’s free. The collected items are recycled, ensuring they don’t end up in landfill.

Paint, household batteries and fluorescent lights - which are less toxic than household chemicals but also more common waste item - can be disposed of throughout the year at a permanent drop-off site. Detox Your Home, on the other hand, is a free service designed specifically to collect unwanted, highly toxic household chemicals. For a list of what can and can’t be dispose of, visit www.sustainability.

There will be free activities for everyone from grannies, grandpas, parents and children, including a barbecue.

■ Carers are being given a chance to get out for some down-time...

Paths to caring The beautiful Mount Evelyn surrounds are helping carers of those with a disability or mental illness. As part of a program to provide much-needed support, carers are meeting with other outer-east based careers to walk, chat and enjoy the great outdoors. The Pathways for Carers project offers monthly walks starting at the Mt Evelyn Community House to talk about news, services and supports available to carers. Yarra Ranges Council Metro Access Officer Amanda May said carers in the Yarra Ranges were lacking supports and connections to their community and often neglected their own health and wellbeing because of their caring role. “The walks are an opportunity for time to themselves which isn’t always available when you are a full-time carer to a loved one, family member or friend,” Ms May said. “The walks are free and there is no need to book. Just turn up on the day. “If you prefer not to walk there is an option to meet the group at a cafe afterwards. We just ask carers to notify us before the walk starts so we know to expect them. “We have a guest walker who joins the group for each walk. They are from a variety of local organisations that can assist carers or the person cared for.” Sharon Feigl, who cares for her young son with autism, said it has been great to take part in the walks and share her experiences with other carers. “My son is at a holiday program today so I could come along,” she said. “We discuss upcoming challenges with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). “Often you’re worried you will leave something out when filling out the paperwork. I need them to know that I can’t just pop to the shops as my son can’t be left alone although he is 12.” Beverley of Chirnside Park cares for her 40-year-old daughter and said

Group members, rear, Beverley, Liz, Elaine, Teena, Jill, Jess, Isabelle and Martin and, front, Kirsten, Amanda, Paula and Sharon. 170873 the walks were an important way to find out about information and events for those who are not regularly connecting with groups online. “The guest walkers are great. On the last walk I attended, we learned about dealing with stressful situations and anxiety, to listen to the sounds while bushwalking and relax,” she said. “My daughter goes to programs at

Melba Support Services while I do the walks.” Guest speaker Jill from Belgravia Leisure joined the July walk to speak about aqua aerobics and classes available at the pool to improve health and wellbeing. The walks, which suit all fitness levels, take about one hour and also take place at Maroondah, Manningham

and Boroondara. The Pathways for Carers project is supported by the State Government’s Building Inclusive Communities Program, Metro Access Officers from Yarra Ranges, Maroondah, Boroondara Councils, LifeAssist and Mt Evelyn Community House. Carers who would like to join the next Yarra Ranges walk, which takes

place every first Thursday of the month, can contact Felicity at LifeAssist on 9239 2500 or email felicity. preston@lifeassist.org.au. The next walks at Mount Evelyn are on Thursday 3 August, 7 September and 5 November at 9.30am. Follow on Facebook at www.facebook.com/pathwaysforcarers.

Sassafras Preschool held celebration for its two long-time teachers. 170832

All for early wins By Derek Schlennstedt The first five years of a child’s life are crucial. Which is why some of the most important people in children’s lives are their pre-school teachers. Two of those people are Debbie Haberfield and Leonie Stow who, between them, have spent more than 40 years at Sassafras Preschool. To recognise the occasion, a surprise party was held by the Parents Advisory Group (PAG) of Sassafras Preschool on Wednesday 19 July. Children, parents and Yarra Ranges mayor Noel Cliff joined in the celebrations. Zoe Wood, a member of PAG, thanked both for their dedication to the

preschool and the hundreds of children they have guided. “Between them, they have taught more than 500 children, and seen them through the most important and formative years of the lives, she said. “No matter what the issue or idea a family, parent or child suggests, both Deb and Leonie take it in their stride, taking the time to listen and often offering words of wisdom to so many of us. The surprise party lived up to its name, as both Leonie and Debbie said that neither of them had any inkling of a party. During the celebrations, Leonie and Debbie received plaques in recognition of their contribution to the community, and the children and families of Sassa-

fras Preschool. Cr Cliff presented the plaques and commended the duo’s incredibly important work. “Leonie and Debbie, as well as other teachers, are virtually setting children up for life, they have an incredibly important job and it's amazing to see their dedication, Cr Cliff said. There is only one year between them, with Debbie starting in 1996 and Leonie coming to Sassafras Preschool in 1997. Having spent two decades working together in an enclosed area with children, they often joke that it’s like being 'married’. But both agree they wouldn’t want it any other way, and look forward to another 20 years.

All guests celebrated the milestone in style. 70832

Company urges vigilance Yarra Valley Water is urging residents in the Yarra Ranges to remain vigilant and not grant access to people claiming to be from Yarra Valley Water without the correct identification. The notice comes as Yarra Valley Water has reported that it has received calls from members of the public regarding suspicious activity. “People claiming to be from Yarra Valley Water, in a branded vehicle have been accessing properties claiming to be reading the gas meter or to be checking other utilities such as phone lines,” Steve Lennox, general manager, Retail Services said. “While we do have water meter readers in the community, they have correct identification and can demonstrate that they are our employees.” People who are concerned that someone is impersonating a member of Yarra Valley Water staff are urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or the police.

Wheels greased on road to education By Kath Gannaway A new bus, on the road this week, will provide transport for young people from ‘down the line’ wanting to attend Cire Community School in Yarra Junction. Cire Services at Yarra Junction caters for Years 7 to 12. Cire currently provides a bus from Healesville and Badger Creek to the Yarra Junction campus to meet the increased interest that has come with the inclusion of Years 7, 8 and 9. Expanding the service to Chirnside Park, Mooroolbark, Mount Evelyn and Lilydale will remove a barrier for students wanting to move away

from mainstream schooling to the Cire model that caters to the needs of students who have disengaged from mainstream education. Cire principal Tim Knowles said a lot of the younger kids didn't have the skills to use public transport and the new service would give that extra support, and options. “We recognise that many of our students need an extra level of support in order to have a successful high school experience and are committed to providing theses extra services to our school community,” Mr Knowles said. Transport is among a number of barriers not only to their

education but to their ability to access professional health services. In recognition of the complex issues impacting on young people’s ability to remain engaged in learning, the school’s wellbeing program creates links to wellbeing staff and community health professionals including doctors, psychologists, alcohol and drug counsellors and housing service workers. The door-to-door bus services remove one of the fundamental barriers - getting to the school and home again. For more information on the Cire Community School, and the school bus services, phone Cire Services on 1300 835 235.

A 32-year-old Doveton man has been charged by Emerald police after he was found dumping a truckload of rubbish at Bobs Park, Aura Vale Lake. The man hired the tip truck for the purpose of disposing building site refuse and received an on-the-spot fine, and told to clean-up. Dumping of rubbish is illegal and any information regarding illegal litter or rubbish dumping can be reported to the EPA hotline on 1300 372 842.

Ash Wednesday centre celebrates By Derek Schlennstedt

The Ash Wednesday Bushfire Education Centre in Cockatoo will be celebrating its first birthday on Sunday 30 July. The centre is dedicated to remembering the devastating bushfires that swept through Cockatoo and Upper Beaconsfield. Belgrave Heights, Belgrave South and other parts of Victoria and South Australia were affected by the fires on Wednesday 16 February 1983. During this time, the community sought refuge within the former Cockatoo kindergarten. In later years the building fell into disuse and was only saved by a lastminute protest as demolition crews began work in August 2011.

The site was redeveloped in 2015 into the Bushfire Education and Memorial Centre and has since been listed. It is currently run by AWBEC volunteers. Graham Simpson, who was CFA captain at Cockatoo during Ash Wednesday and is now the chairman of the AWBEC committee, said the centre aimed to educate people about the impact of serious bushfires. “The purpose is to be a museum to show people the destruction, the damage, the results and the recovery from a major bushfire. “On Ash Wednesday, the fire went right through Cockatoo and the AWBEC building was a shelter for people.” The centre offers educational in-

sights into the impact of bushfires as well as an historical timeline of Ash Wednesday, including poignant photographs, an interactive touch screen and, most recently, an interactive firewise garden that educates people on what plants can be used to minimise fire risk. Since its inception, more than 600 people have passed through the centre’s doors to learn about Australia’s long history of bushfires. “It’s a part of Australia’s history,” Mr Simpson said. To mark the one-year anniversary of its opening and acknowledge the contribution of volunteers, the committee will be holding a cake cutting, running colouring activities, and be holding an art exhibition for school children, with all pictures being displayed.

Need for a check-up From my

desk Jim Child

Mayor, Yarra Ranges

The importance of preventative health checks was brought home to me recently. After a check-up with my doctor, I was advised to take a precautionary colonoscopy after a bowel test came back negative. The doctor then delivered the news no-one wants to hear: I have bowel cancer. Recently I underwent surgery to remove my tumour, which will be followed by chemotherapy treatment.

Letters More to be done

My prognosis is good - the doctors were able to remove the tumour, and are confident the cancer has not spread. So things are looking positive. Others are perhaps not so lucky when receiving this news. This diagnosis has given me an opportunity to raise awareness about the prevalence of bowel cancer, and the importance of bowel cancer screening tests that are freely available for residents over 50 years of age. Bowel cancer is Australia’s second most common type of cancer. In Australia, 80 people die from bowel cancer every week, and around one in 10 men and one in 15 women are diagnosed with the disease by the age of 85 every year. When I think about these statis-

tics in the context of Yarra Ranges Council as an organisation, those numbers are alarming. And if you look around the Yarra Ranges community, chances are we all know of someone who has been impacted by this terrible disease. Bowel Cancer Australia says the bowel cancer screening test is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of dying from bowel cancer. When identified early, 90 per cent of bowel cancer cases can be successfully treated. The free bowel screening test could very well have saved my life - and it could save yours, too. I urge anyone in the Yarra Ranges who is over 50 years old to make the most of the free bowel screening test. Information about how to access

a free kit is available at www.cancerscreening.gov.au or by phoning 1800 118 868. And of course, regular check-ups at your doctor are also an important preventative measure for overall health. I have regularly practised annual health checks including blood pressure, cholesterol, prostate and other men’s health issues. It was while undergoing one of these checks that my GP recommended another test, which then alerted me to my current health issue. For more information about bowel cancer, I encourage you all to go to www.bowelcanceraustralia. org or www.cancer.org.au. Donations for research into bowel cancer can also be made through the Bowel Cancer Australia website.

The announcement by Coles and Woolworths to ban lightweight, single-use plastic shopping bags from July 2018 is a step in the right direction. Much, however, remains to be done by governments and consumers. To prevent plastics from entering our oceans, the Victorian Government should join with other states to implement a statewide ban on lightweight shopping bags and introduce a 10-cent refund system on plastic bottles and cans. Better sewerage By Derek Schlennstedt Yarra Valley Water is planning to implement a modern sewerage service for the Monbulk area, as part of the community sewerage program. About 160 properties in Monbulk town centre are connected to the Monbulk Sewage Treatment Plant, with many other properties instead managing their own wastewater via on-site treatment systems, such as septic tanks. The program to provide better sewerage services comes after Yarra Ranges Shire Council’s Domestic Wastewater Management Plan identified that poorly performing septic systems were damaging the local environment. Yarra Valley Water said that leaking septic tanks in the Monbulk area were discharging nutrients into the environment that were the equivalent of dumping over 1200 bags of fertiliser directly into waterways each year. Chris Brace, general manager growth futures, said delivering new sewerage services to Monbulk was a challenge due to the area’s hilly nature and its distance from Melbourne’s existing sewerage network, but community feedback had been invaluable. “Through regularly consulting with the community, we have been able to gather as much information as possible to find a solution which works for Monbulk,” Mr Brace said. “During earlier small group consultations, the community said they would only like to see a couple of preferred options, instead of several which could be confusing. “Considering this feedback, we are presenting two sewerage servic-

The second option is based on a pressure sewer system which involves building new pipes in local streets and connecting properties that are not capable of containing wastewater on-site to Melbourne’s metropolitan sewerage network. Yarra Valley Water will be providing a sewerage service to about 80 per cent of the 836 properties, with septic tanks that they assessed through Land Capability Assessments, which consider a property’s size, available land area for irriga-

tion, slope, and closeness to local waterways. Only properties that are incapable of containing their own wastewater on-site will be affected. Yarra Valley Water will hold a consultation meeting at Monbulk Living and Learning Centre on 25 July from 5pm to 7pm. Alternatively, residents can make a submission about which option they would prefer at www.yoursay. yvw.com.au/MonbulkCSP.

From page 1 “It’s a matter of doing the hard yards and taking kids off the streets, who don’t have any means of support.” Mike has already raised and donated significant funds to Meg’s Children, but still has a long way to go to reach his target of $100,000. As such, during his trek, Mike has started a blog and will share his experiences along the way, while also encouraging others to donate to his chosen charity. Mike is set to leave Australia on Monday 21 August and he expects the journey to take more than two months to complete. He admits he feels some trepidation about what lies ahead, but urged others to show their support. To keep up to date with Mike’s journey, or for more details on how to donate, visit https:// mcoensjourney.wordpress.com.

With the cooler months closing in, Richard and Beth Henke from Hire a Hubby Upwey continue to employ the tools, experience and determination to ensure their customers have the dream home they’ve always desired - inside and out! “We enjoy being able to complete work both inside and out for our customers, but the cooler months are great to get those smaller jobs done!” Richard said. Whether customers are in dire need of a home renovation due to general wear and tear, or if they simply want to modernise the interiors or exteriors of their house, Richard and Beth are the team for the job. From plaster repairs, to tiling to interior painting, the list of jobs that this passionate husband and wife team can do is far from short. “In the summer time we tend to focus on our exterior problems and forget about those things inside that need fixing,” Beth explained. “The wet weather comes and suddenly you realise there is a leak inside or you realise that those cracked tiles in the bathroom really do need fixing. But given how madly we all work these days it’s hard to find the time to DIY, which is where we come in.” Property maintenance is an all-year-round job that the Henkes take very seriously.

PROPERTY GOALS FOR NEW FINANCIAL YEAR WHETHER you’re looking to buy your first home, upsize, sell or invest, there are plenty of changes you can make to reach your property goals this new financial year, according to First National Real Estate Ranges principal Mick Dolphin. “At First National Real Estate, we’re encouraging all of our customers to make (and keep) a property-related goal,” Mick said. “Whether you want to buy your first home or take advantage of new government incentives to downsize, there are steps you can take to make your property dreams reality this year.” Here are First National’s three tips for the financial year: Prospective buyers - stash away a deposit Not having the deposit is the number one roadblock for property buyers, as outlined in the recent Housing Affordability Report by CoreLogic. Although you aren’t required to have a 20 per cent deposit to buy a home, it certainly helps to have a substantial deposit before taking out your first mortgage because there will be no need for expensive, ongoing, mortgage insurance. Whether you want to buy soon or in the future, non-property owners who are looking to get on the ladder should start saving towards a deposit in 2017. This goal may impact lifestyle choices but there are simple ways to save, including: Your monthly budget should reflect income and expenses. * Reduce ‘lifestyle’ choices by taking lunch to work. Eliminating unnecessary spending. Ensure your bank accounts maximise benefits for you.

Take advantage of the Federal Government’s First Home Super Saver Scheme. Homeowners - purchase an investment property If you already own a home, this could be the year to purchase an investment property. Property investors enjoy the benefits of: Reasonably secure returns. Owning an asset with a potential to grow in value. Leveraging their existing property equity to facilitate an investment loan. A reliable income from rent payments. “You don’t necessarily need to be a property owner to become an investor,” Mick said. “Rentvesting - the practice of renting out your main residence in one place and purchasing an investment property in a more affordable area was also identified as an emerging trend in the CoreLogic report.” Sellers - make a smart renovation If you are not planning to sell your home in 2017, it is the perfect time to make renovations that will increase your home’s value. A fresh coat of paint or new light fixtures will add value to a home but be careful not to over-capitalise. The main game is to prepare your home now in preparation to sell. Work with a real estate agent in order to understand what buyers are looking for in your local market. First National Real Estate is Australia’s largest independent network of real estate agents, with nearly 400 offices throughout Australia, New Zealand and Vanuatu.

School DJ a hit By Derek Schlennstedt

Fallen leaves for fun Avid Mail reader Robyn Kuys was minding his grandchildren over the school holidays when he snapped this great image of two of his nine grandchildren, Paityn and Huntyr Kuys, who were having fun with the autumn leaves at Emerald Lake Park. What a great way for children to pass the time on their holidays.

If the mark of a good DJ is that their events are packed with dancers, then Ian Cranage is among the best. Particularly when talking about primary school students hitting the dance floor. On Friday 21 July at St Paul’s Primary School in Monbulk, DJ Crano marked his 30th year DJ-ing for the school. To celebrate the milestone, St Paul’s Primary School presented DJ Crano with a golden record in recognition of the many years of entertainment he brought to generations of students. Mr Cranage spoke to the Mail as he was setting up for the disco at St Paul’s and said music had always been a big part of his life. “I’ve been doing this for 54 years - I’m a big lover of Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Bill Haley and the Comets, and that era of music,” he said. Although he said he enjoyed the early years of rock‘n’roll, Cranage has no trouble getting the kids involved and listens every week to the top 100. “Well, I love seeing the involvement from the kids, watching them have a good time because when we were growing up there were no discoes at school,” he said. “I still download the Aria chart on the Sunday morning so I can keep up with it all.

St Paul’s Primary School presented Crano with a golden record to recognise his 13th year DJ-ing at the school. 70859 “I’ve, basically, got every song that’s ever chartered in Australia, from right back in the ’50s. “If asked, I can do a whole night on one particular year, I’ve got around 20,000 songs on CDs and a lot more on records.” The 75-year-old Seaford DJ is part of the St Paul’s community and Principal Michael Watt said he was practically family.

Summer Wine’s a full glass of gags By Derek Schlennstedt Uncorked at last, the 1812 Theatre will be unveiling its new play Last of the Summer Wine. The stage production is based upon the classic and popular British BBC sitcom which ran for more than 30 years. All the infamous characters are back with Nora, Compo, Clegg and Foggy getting up to their usual misadventures. The stage adaptation, directed by Pip Le Blond from 1812 Theatre, tells the story of a trio of elderly gentlemen in West Yorkshire. “These three guys live in this little town in Yorkshire, in a village, and they just get up to mischief every week, it’s always something ridiculous,”

Le Blond said. Audiences are guaranteed an hilarious evening full of Monty Pythonesque humour with Cleg, Compo and Foggy delivering hilarious renditions with well-versed accents. The production, which involves seven cast members, follows Compo Simmonite, Norman Clegg and Walter ‘Foggy’ Dewhurst as well as Nora Batty and her niece Constance. Without giving away too many spoilers, the production involves a flasher, an evening of entertainment for the benefit of Nora’s niece, and, as usual, all of it descends into farce. David Ayliffe a Dandenong Ranges resident who plays Foggy, said the biggest challenge was not learning two hours’

worth of lines, but having to remain unaffected by the humour, which often resulted in the actors laughing on stage. “It is great fun and all the cast members have found that it’s not only learning the lines but there are parts so funny you have to get through laughing at them because you are on stage,” he said. While there is a flasher in the play, Le Blond promises that audiences need not worry and invites all age groups to come for an entertaining night filled with laughter. Last of the Summer Wine will play from 3-26 August in the Lowe Auditorium at 1812 Theatre in Ferntree Gully. To purchase tickets, visit www.1812theatre.com.au.

A self-confessed streak of perfectionism runs through Liam, Dylan and Michael’s attitude towards composing original music. The band draws upon the best harmonic aspects of pop and soft rock, combining and expounding these sounds with an effervescent indie edge to create their sound. Their debut release, The Chicago EP, was made independently in March 2016. The title track, Chicago, relates the wintertime blues when “the sun’s at least half a year away”, a common feeling in the band’s temperate stomping grounds in the outer-east of Melbourne. For Liam and Dylan, songwriting is about using the medium of music to create a relatable story. Drawing upon their empathy with their friend’s experiences to write lyrics, music is a challenge to create

When it comes to music these bright Sparks are on fire Hills-based musicians Liam, Dylan and Michael from Sparks are now set to further their idiosyncratic take on rock‘n’roll and beats in upcoming performances. After forming through an appreciation of the same music in 2015, the trio has honed its musical skills through several Battle of the Bands in Melbourne and surrounds. The band’s origins lie in humble beginnings in high school jamming sessions when Liam and Michael sought out their talented violinist Dylan to further their sound in a chance meeting in the Dandenong Ranges two years ago. Away from Dylan’s studies at ‘jazz university’, the three found common enjoyment in writing and recording vocal harmonies, a dynamic which has held true to the present from their debut as a three-piece at the Belgrave Busker’s Festival in February 2015.

“He’s been coming twice a year for the past 30 years and he’s also come and DJed other school events, such as our country fair,” Mr Watt said. “He’s really a fixture of the St Paul’s community. “The golden record was just to say thank you and that we all at St Paul’s appreciate his dedication and everything he’s done for us over the years.”

Liam Bell, centre, on acoustic guitar and vocals, with, left, Dylan Knur on violin and vocals and Michael D'Emilio on piano and vocals. a story which might have secret hidden meanings or a greater depth that listeners can take away, or might be a challenge to their future selves to live up to. Liam patiently writes ‘one bar at time’ to complete the band’s next projects while Dylan confidently finds

that songs form when “they’re ready to be finished”. The band’s next challenge is to progress their sound to incorporate the upbeat, bop-along melodies of Motown and the Beach Boys with the grating edge of musicians like Tom Waits and Earth, Wind and Fire. As winter of 2017 thaws and the sounds of spring warm up, Sparks will be there to lift listeners into the summer and keep in a mood where they can reach out, dance along and make new friendships and hear timehonoured beats and melodies in a new way. Sparks will be performing on Thursday 4 August at the Sooki Lounge in Belgrave. The band will be supporting popular established act Loonee Tunes. Dunkirk, a true-story war epic about the massive Allied withdrawal during World War II, is as bold, ambitious and oblique as any of director Christopher Nolan’s other works. The film depicts the evacuation of the title beach from three interconnected perspectives: the evacuation of the soldiers themselves, taking place over the course of a week, a civilian yacht conscripted to aid in their rescue during one day, and a Royal Air Force pilot protecting the civilian fleet over one hour. Dunkirk is a remarkable technical achievement with seamless effects and thrilling battle sequences. While the Dunkirk beach is framed as a vast purgatory of near-constant suffering and set-backs, the film derives much of its suspense from more claustrophobic settings, such as sinking ships or crashed planes. The film allows for heroic moments while never glamorising war, keeping the stress and desperation of the evacuation at the forefront. Unfortunately, the film’s innovative structure is its biggest handicap. The narratives dovetail together effectively in the climax but the transitions between them can be jarring, and the way time is extruded and compressed throughout the film makes it hard to tell what is happening at what point. If events of heavy dramatic weight can be accomplished in a day or hour, the impact of the week-long struggle on the beach is diminished. Dunkirk is a film of phenomenal parts in an impressive but frustrating whole. - Seth Hynes

Season set for close finish By Cameron Hutchison AFL YARRA RANGES Round 13 is done and dusted for Division 1, while Division 2 have put Round 14 behind them. In Division 1, the fight for the minor premiership is wide open with only four points separating the top four. In Division 2, it is really between Belgrave and Seville for the minor premiership, but a good backend to the season for Yarra Glen could see them challenging. In Division 1 netball, Olinda are holding fast on top of the ladder with now Woori Yallock and Wandin fighting it out for second spot, but they are all safe in the top three. In Division 2 netball, Belgrave are undefeated and clearly on top of the ladder and favourites for the minor and major premierships. Yarra Glen holds onto second spot with Yarra Junction and Yea fighting it out for third spot. Division 1 Seniors Football Upwey Tecoma 13.10(88) d Emerald 12.14(86) Upwey has all but secured themselves a spot in the top five with a closely fought game on Saturday. Upwey got the early jump kicking 4.4 to 2.1 in the first term and had a slender lead of 15 points. It was a goalkicking feast in the second quarter with 11 goals being kicked but Upwey still had the upper hand with a lead of 21 points at half-time. Emerald rallied in the third term kicking 3.6 to one straight to reduce the lead to only three points at three-quarter time. Emerald kicked 2.5 to 2.4 in the last and could only reduce the margin to two points at the final siren. A third quarter where Emerald had nine scoring shots to one came back to bite them in the end. Upwey-Tecoma Best: D. Waters (8 goals), J. Hackett, N. Beacom, S. Mitchell (2 goals), H. Stanley, L. Beacom. Emerald Best: L. Sheppard, P. White, J. Bishop (1 goal), D. Karacsonyi (1 goal), J. Pedder, S. Cocks. Healesville 16.12(108) d Mount Evelyn 6.8(44) Healesville are now sitting atop the ladder after possibly finishing Mount Evelyn’s chances to play in finals this year. The first quarter was tight with only two points separating the teams at quarter time. Healesville capitalised on the wind advantage in the second term kicking 4.6 to two goals to take a 20-point lead at half time. Mount Evelyn could not get the benefits of the wind in the third quarter and only managed to kick two goals to Healesville’s 3.2. The lead at three-quarter time was 28 points and the game was in the bag. Healesville really kicked away in the last holding Mount Evelyn goalless while they piled on six for themselves. Healesville Best: B. Murphy, N. Mende (1 goal), G. Schiavello, D. Anderson, L. Daly, S. Gordon (5 goals). Mt Evelyn Best: B. Doyle, D. Kift, J. Barden, D. Wootton, S. Martin (1 goal), A. Chalkley. Monbulk 16.12(108) d Warburton-Millgrove 15.9(99) Monbulk got home by the skin of their teeth on Saturday after a great effort by Warburton-Millgrove. Warburton came out with a purpose in the first term and kicked 6.2 to 5.2 to take a surprising six-point lead at quarter time. Monbulk regrouped

in the second quarter kicking 5.4 to 2.5 and the lead had swung in Monbulk’s favour by 11 points at halftime. Both sides kicked four goals in the third term and the momentum was still in Monbulk’s favour. Warburton staged a comeback in the last outscoring Monbulk by kicking 3.1 to 2.4, but the points finally went to Monbulk. Monbulk Best: B. Emmett (2 goals), J. Major, S. Williams (4 goals), S. McBride (2 goals), C. Tibb (1 goal), J. Rak (2 goals). Warburton-Millgrove Best: D. Brookes, T. McKail (2 goals), P. Hay, A. White (4 goals), S.Andueza, J. Lee (2 goals). Olinda Ferny Creek 12.17(89) d Gembrook Cockatoo 5.3(33) Olinda shares second spot on the ladder after a win over Gembrook on Saturday. Olinda started in fine form kicking 5.4 to one behind in the first term and earning a 33-point lead at quarter time. Gembrook held Olinda to only two goals in the second quarter and kicked two themselves but the lead was going to be tough to claw back. The third quarter was a battle of defences with Olinda only managing to kick one goal but they did hold Gembrook scoreless. The last quarter was freer flowing as Olinda kicked 4.6 to Gembrook’s 3.1 but the game was well and truly won. Olinda Ferny Creek Best: B. Walter (4 goals), D. Fitzgerald, M. Hottes, L. Hill, Jay Rankin (1 goal), Joshua Rankin (1 goal). Gembrook-Cockatoo Best: L. Scott, D. Welsh, R. Causer, L. Frazzetto (1 goal), J. Kruithof, D. Leversha. Woori Yallock 9.16(70) d Wandin 7.13(55) Woori Yallock has kept themselves in touch with the top three after a solid win over second-placed Wandin. The first quarter was tight with only two goals being kicked and a one-point lead to Wandin. Woori Yallock had most of the ball in the second term and kicked 3.6 to 1.1 to take a 16-point lead into the main break. Wandin had advantage of any wind in the third quarter and kicked 2.5 to 3.1 but could not convert when it was needed. Inaccuracy was the order of the day as Woori Yallock kicked 2.5 to 3.2 in the last but managed to hang on and come away with a celebrated win. Woori Yallock Best: B. Arnold, K. Thompson, M. Wright, S. Kennedy, L. Boontjes, R. Allen (1 goal). Wandin Best: M. Polkinghorne (1 goal), P. Bruzzese (1 goal), H. Byrne (2 goal), J. Del Giudice, N. Molnar (2 goals), J. Ladner. Division 2 Seniors Football Alexandra 20.10(130) d Thornton Eildon 13.9(87) Alexandra’s finals hopes are still well and truly alive after a 43-point win on Saturday. Alexandra started up with five goals in the first term to three and had the jump on Thornton by 16 points at quarter time. Alexandra kicked five straight in the second quarter while Thornton kicked 4.4 and could have had a real impact if they were accurate in front of goal. Alexandra stepped it up in the third term with six goals to three and their lead had blown out to 38 points at three-quarter time. The scoring seesawed in the last with seven goals being kicked but the honours went to Alexandra at the final siren.

Alexandra Best: B. Cooper (2 goals), M. Coombs, C. Tranter, S. Heveren, B. Woollard, B. Norris. Thornton-Eildon Best: B. Wratten (1 goal), J. Newton (5 goals), R. Chapman, J. Strachan, J. Ashby, D. Creed. Kinglake 9.16(70) d Powelltown 7.13(55) Kinglake share fifth spot with Alexandra and Powelltown have dropped down to fourth after a morale-boosting win by Kinglake on Saturday. Kinglake got the advantage in the first term and held a slim lead by five points at quarter-time. Powelltown regrouped and got their game going in the second quarter and kicked 4.2 to 1.5 to take the lead by 10 points at the main break. Kinglake played some good footy in the third term and if they were accurate in front of goal the margin could have been well and truly out of reach but they recaptured the lead by 16 points at three-quarter time. Powelltown had run out of steam by the last and could not find the gear they needed to put this one away. Both sides only kicked one goal but it was Kinglake in the end. Kinglake Best: C. Arnott (2 goals), J. Butterworth, H. Prest, J. Crowe (1 goal), B. White (1 goal), M. McAllister. Powelltown Best: J. Rohan, J. Moore, P. Allen (1 goal), J. Walker, M. Lord, T. Hallmark. Seville 31.12(198) d Yea 5.7(37) Seville is now two wins clear of Yarra Glen in second spot and has firmed as the ones to challenge Belgrave during the finals. They started off in fine form kicking 5.2 to 1.1 in the first term and they looked like they were in for a big one. An eight goal second quarter and the writing was on the wall for Yea as Seville took a 68-point lead into half-time. They came out and kicked another six goals in the third term and the lead was now 75 points. They certainly put their foot down in the last and held Yea goalless but kicked an impressive 12 goals to finish off the game. Seville Best: L. Casini (1 goal), N. O’Keefe (9 goals), J. Neal (6 goals), D. Toohey (5 goals), J. Nolan (1 goal), A. Wind (1 goal). Yea Best: H. Jarvie (1 goal), R. Aldous (1 goal), A. Chisholm, Z. Pell, T. Butterworth, J. Ryan (1 goal). Belgrave 24.15(159) d Yarra Junction 13.12(90) Belgrave are one game clear on top of the ladder after squashing any chance for finals this year for Yarra Junction. The first quarter was an even tussle but Belgrave took a lead of 15 points into the second quarter. The second term was much of the same with Belgrave kicking 4.6 to 4.5 and the lead to Yarra Junction’s credit was only 16 points. It was a low scoring affair in the third quarter, Belgrave could only manage 2.3 to Junction’s 1.3 but they still had control of the game. The last quarter was a different story when Belgrave fired up and kicked 12.1 to 4.2 and the win was convincing at the final siren. Belgrave Best: L. Foreman (1 goal), R. Ferguson (6 goals), P. Gough, Y. Curtis, J. Brown (3 goals), J. McDermott. Yarra Junction Best: M. Sword, T. Sword, T. Boxell, J. Bombinski, P. Cubbin, A. Chandler (2 goals). Yarra Glen: Bye.
