■ Casey Council’s plan for youth conscription is taking hits ...

‘Nasho’ under fire By Victoria Stone-Meadows

Casey councillors Amanda Stapledon, Rex Flannery and Rosalie Crestani want to see national service introduced for all Picture: VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS Australians 18 years of age. 170716 council chambers when the motion was raised, he would not be able to support it as a matter of conscience. “Personally I don’t agree with it and feel we are not in a situation to warrant it,” he said. Two of the federal MPs Casey Council resolved to write to as part of the motion have shown a clear reluctance to support the plan. Member for Holt and Deputy Chair of the Intelligence and Security Joint Committee, Anthony Byrne, said he could see what council was trying to

achieve, but fell short of putting his support behind the move. “I appreciate that there is an issue with youth crime in our local community, and understand that we need to work co-operatively to find an effective means to keep our community safe,” he said. “I have been actively working with the security and law enforcement agencies to keep Australia and the community safe and I will continue working with my parliamentary colleagues to discuss all options for keeping the community safe from any potential

threats, particularly addressing the rise of youth crime rates in the electorate of Holt.” La Trobe MP and Chair of the Parliamentary Joint Migration Committee, Jason Wood, said he would not support implementing mandatory national service. “What the council is trying to achieve is getting young people out of crime and the gangs, but for me there are a lot of other things I’ll be doing before supporting that,” he said. “I can’t put my support behind that;

I will be more supportive of getting more funding for youth programs, diversion programs, and giving young people hope. I don’t think this will be government policy, but their intentions are good.” While the Australian Defence Force was not able to provide comment, a spokesperson from the office of the Minister of Defence was quick to shoot down the idea. “The government has no plans to introduce compulsory military service,” the spokesperson said.

Casey Council’s controversial plan to urge federal politicians to consider reintroducing mandatory national military service has attracted criticism from all angles. From a councillor who wasn’t present in the chambers during debate, to federal politicians and veterans’ rights groups, the council has found a marked lack of support for its bold plan. Casey Councillor Wayne Smith was not present when the motion was raised at the general council meeting on Tuesday 18 July, but said he would have spoken against it. “I read it in the agenda before I had to leave the meeting early and had not thought it would get anywhere; I though it surely was not going to get up,” he said. Cr Smith said he was absolutely shocked when he found out after the meeting that the motion had passed. “At the end of the meeting I asked how the motion went and when the other councillors said it passed unanimously, I thought they were joking,” he said. The motion will see Casey Council write to local federal MPs and urge them to consider supporting a move to reintroduce mandatory military service for all Australians when they turn 18. Cr Smith said Casey Council has no business meddling in federal policy areas and should focus on helping the residents of Casey have better lives. “The average everyday citizen in Casey wants us looking at issues that affect them and their quality of life in Casey,” he said. “Every person in Casey will have their views on conscription, but council doesn’t need to have that opinion on their behalf.” Cr Smith said if he were in the

Man suffered burns in blaze By Victoria Stone-Meadows A witness to a house fire in Cranbourne has told of her attempts to help a man believed to have been badly burned in the blaze. Emergency services attended the scene of the house fire in Cranbourne shortly before 1pm on Tuesday 25 July. The witness, whose name has been withheld, said she was cleaning a bathroom in her home when the smoke from the fire started to filter into her house. “I was cleaning my ensuite when it became full of thick smoke and it was hard to breathe; I thought my house was on fire at first,” she said. “I could hear people outside so I went outside and street was full of thick black smoke - I then grabbed phone and keys and rang triple-zero and alerted them there was a fire.” She sprang into action and took off on foot down the street towards the fire to see if she could lend a hand. She said what she saw when she arrived at the burning house was something she was not likely to forget any time soon. “The home owners were out-

concerned with their house.” The witness said the man she was speaking to didn’t realise how badly he had been burned. “He said he was trying to put the fire out but couldn’t because the flames were too big and too hot,” she said. “The person on the phone to the ambulance was trying to wet the man’s face and that is when he start-

ed to realise he was burnt and that he was bleeding from one of his legs.” As the woman was doing her best to help the home owner with his burns, the fire in the house behind them suddenly became more urgent. “I stuck around until I heard an explosion in the garage,” she said. “I was quite worried at this point as the flames were past the roof.” By this time emergency services had arrived on the scene and the witness and others were asked to move away from the fire and leave the care of the home owners to the paramedics. Ambulance Victoria confirmed a man in his sixties and a woman in her fifties were treated at the scene, with the man being taken to Frankston Hospital. It is understood the man was treated for cuts and burns, but both people were in a stable condition. Victoria Police believe the house was deliberately set alight and a man armed with a knife was spotted at the scene of the fire. A 35-year-old Cranbourne man was quickly arrested at a nearby sports oval and was be taken under police custody to hospital for assessment.

A young performer from Hillcrest Christian College in Clyde North has taken out top prizes in calisthenics at a recent performance competition at NIDA in Sydney. Year 12 student and Narre Warren South local Luci Hendrickse placed fourth in the individual category at the 2017 Australian Calisthenics Federation Nationals, but took out the top prize with her team. She auditioned alongside hundreds of other hopefuls to be selected to the 2017 Victorian Juniors Calisthenics Team. Luci has been dedicated to achieving her best in this gymnastics-dance fusion sport since she was a small child. She said she had been doing calisthenics for as long as she could remember, and still loved every minute of it. “When I was younger I was introduced it to through our family friends who did it,” she said. “It’s a really good way to get into some type of dancing and what I can remember is going every week and having all my friends there and learning new tricks.” “I love that it gives me the chance to be myself and dance at the same time.” Luci’s mother Sharna Hendrickse said it was a delight to be able to see her daughter perform in Sydney as she usually took up one of the various backstage roles. “She was fantastic,” Mrs Hendrickse said. “All her hard work and work of the coaches really showed in her performances, so it was really wonderful to see their hard work rewarded.”

Top priority for forgotten pavilion

Repairs still in pipeline

By Cam Lucadou-Wells

VicRoads maintenance projects team leader Upali Ileperuma and Luke Donnellan announcing repairs at the uneven road in June 2016. stressing the suspensions and shock absorbers of vehicles. VicRoads reduced the section’s speed limit from 80 km/h to 60 km/h due to safety concerns more than two years ago. Resident Rob Ward, who frequently drives on the road, said it had been a “mess” for years before a promise was made to fix it in 2016. “Putting up (new) speed signs and having the odd speed camera booking motorists is not the answer. “It seems that this government and Casey Council find it easier to put out press releases

and create photo opportunities than to actually get anything done.” Casey mayor Sam Aziz, who voted with councillors to lobby VicRoads to fix the road last year, was frustrated “it has just taken so long”. Cr Aziz said the road’s condition - in combination with a car with questionable steering and travelling at reasonable speed - could cause a “real accident”. “We raised it a year and a half ago, and there still has been no action on it.”

What a difference a year makes. After intense lobbying, the dated Jack Thomas Reserve pavilion in Narre Warren North has gone from “disappeared” to No.1 priority on Casey Council’s wish list for the state’s Growing Suburbs Fund. In a report on 18 July, the council stated it planned to build a $3.56 million districtlevel soccer pavilion in 2018’19 with the help of state funding. The project heads a list of seven submitted by Casey to the state’s $50-million, two-year Growing Suburbs Fund program. The reserve’s tenant Berwick City, which is Casey’s largest soccer club, had long suffered in a drab, unheated and cramped 1980s-style pavilion. It had insufficient toilets and no separate change rooms for male and female teams. A delighted Berwick City president Joe Di Iorio said the council was also set to upgrade drainage at two of its routinely flooded pitches. “The club is working very closely with council officers and local councillors, and we’re seeing some positive things about to happen,” Mr Di Iorio said. Casey council listed the pavilion on its 2014-’15 capital works program, but the works had “disappeared” from the list in 2016. At the time, its sport and leisure acting manager Terry Jenvey said Jack Thomas Reserve - as well as the club’s access to Sweeney Reserve - met the

Councillor Rosalie Crestani said she and her then ward councillor Rafal Kaplon had been “smashed” by the wave of lobbying from the 800-plus member club. “I’m really encouraged that the Jack Thomas Reserve is getting such focus. “I’ve seen a turn-around within the council on sport facilities in the north (of Casey). “There’s a dire need - we have 13 clubs with nearly 2500 soccer players (in Casey).” According to Football Federation Victoria, facilities can’t match the surging number of players across the state. In 2016, 11,000 extra players were

taking part in outdoor soccer in Victoria. “We can’t just look at history but at the current usage. Soccer is the fastest growing sport in Victoria,” Cr Crestani said. “There’s a large focus on sport among our multi-ethnic communities. It is quite a universal sport.” Cr Crestani said she was encouraged by talk of greater access by clubs to school playing fields. Jack Thomas Reserve also benefited from the scuttling of Casey’s compulsory acquisition of John Foy’s property in Narre Warren North for a three-pitch soccer facility, she said. Casey was also negotiating with Parks Victoria to use further land at Syd Pargeter Reserve for soccer fields.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Repairs to a notoriously uneven section of Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road have been delayed due to a “complex” mixture of ground conditions, inadequate drainage and a broken sewer pipe, VicRoads says. The $2.5 million works were expected to start on the road section south of Norfolk Drive by late 2016, subject to investigating the cause. VicRoads metro south east operations director Michael Barker said it was working towards the “best long-term solution” for the road’s repair with Melbourne Water, South East Water and City of Casey. “Repairs to Narre WarrenCranbourne Road are complex due to ground conditions and inadequate drainage.” Mr Barker said works were now expected to start in September after South East Water repaired its pipe on the eastern side of the road. A South East Water spokesman said the 45-metre stretch of sewer main near the road which was damaged by tree roots was “not related to the condition of the road surface”. He expected the pipe to be repaired by this week. The deteriorated road, which was subject to heavy flooding in 2011, had become notorious for

Councillor Flannery’s motion to introduce national service to Australians of 18 years of age has definitely raised some eyebrows Australia wide. I applaud Councillor Flannery for the idea around his motion and the discussion it has created, however I must express my vehement disagreement with the proposal of sending Australian youth to national service. Indeed we must be looking at ways to combat crime, substance abuse, violence and mental heath issues in young people, but involuntary conscription to the defence forces is nothing more than a band-aid solution to this complex issue. Firstly, our armed forces have always had a high standard for their recruits and I believe we should continue to be selective in who has the privilege to serve. We cannot expect the armed forces to be able to deal with the issues our disenfranchised and disengaged youth are going through and simultaneously maintain their renowned standards and discipline. Simply taking them off the streets and handing them off to toughen up in the armed forces does not address any of the problems youth face. I appreciate the thought behind the motion, following on from Councillor Flannery’s trip to Israel. I just think that Australian youth face different challenges that need to be overcome with a multi-pronged approach that addresses this complex issue. As a young person myself, I am of the belief we need to invest in youth more, by engag-

As a former regular soldier, from the 1970s, I can say with confidence that the military doesn’t need or want conscripts. Volunteers are committed, conscripts are not. Forcing young people into military service will create more problems than it will solve. Arming angry young people with skills in violence is unwise. Mark Chadwick, Cranbourne West.

Socially speaking On Wednesday 19 July, the CranbourneBerwick News were first with the story that Casey Council had passed a motion to call on federal politicians to reintroduce mandatory National Service for youth. The story has since gone viral and has been picked up by several major media outlets. National Service is always a polarising issue and here is how our readers reacted to the news: Patrick Wilson: Yes, that will work. Yes, that’s what Casey needs. We don’t need local jobs. We need more housing developments with no infrastructure, jobs or care it seems to support the people they are cramming in. Just before I swallowed my own vomit I’m sure I read that my kids would better off fighting in Iraq. WTF! Jeremy Riley: You’re cooked Flannery, go and do your two years' service and then raise your motion. What about all the kids that have direction and purpose that would be derailed by consignment? The ADF only take about six per cent of applicants as it is and you think they can fix a generation of troubled kids? Meanwhile there’s a pothole on William Thwaites Boulevard if you could tend to real council issues. Sharon McCurdy Clifford: What will be done about the high sexual assault rate of women currently serving in the military? If we plan to send thousands of teenage girls to the Middle East, what protection do

these vulnerable girls have from both the people they are fighting and the bad element in our own military? Will the council be setting up special clinics to help these girls with the physical and mental rehabilitation on their return or is this another social problem they plan to “pray away"? Alan Gordon: Stick to roads rates and rubbish, is it any wonder we pay such high rates, for overseas trips then (they) come back thinking they are federal parliamentarians. This is why local government is not held in high regard as they don’t look after the basics, and always want to go into areas not under their control. Connie Meier: Um, what about the charter for human rights? Pretty sure forcing people to go fight a war against their will is a violation. Maybe try lobbying for tougher sentences for criminals. Bob Graham: As if the Federal Govternment will listen to this bunch of morons. Just look at the picture, that’s a fair advert for local council ... hahahaha ... idiots. Margaret Braybrook: I think this would be a great idea. You have my vote. Shaun Inguanzo: Actually, let’s scrap local government and use the money to pay for better initiatives for young people.

Vandals spray kids’ bus Arts left By Victoria Stone-Meadows

Parents and staff at an early learning centre in Berwick have been left shocked and appalled after graffiti vandals targeted their minibus. Staff arrived at the Bluebird Early Learning Centre in Berwick at 6.30am on Friday 21 July to find the centre’s minibus, signs and the neighbouring primary school’s signs were covered in tags. Centre manager Catherine Collins said those hit the hardest by this vandalism had been the kids who attended the centre. “It’s pretty upsetting because the children use it for excursions and things like that, she said. “The kids have been saying “Someone has written on the bluebird bus and they are pretty upset about it and we can’t use it until it gets fixed. While the centre hasn’t had to cancel any excursions in the short term, it remains unclear how long it will take for the minibus to be cleaned and usable again. “Everyone is upset and disappointed something like this has happened, Ms Collins said. “You don’t expect it to happen with something relating to children. Irate parent Suzie Weeding took to social media to vent her frustration with the unknown vandals. “Tags all over the bus that drops off and picks up kids from schools in the area for before and after school care, Ms Weeding wrote in a post on the Casey Crime Page on Facebook. “Who does this s***, seriously? My three-year-old son writes better than this you stupid idiots. “It’s pointless. Do it to your own car or your parent’s car and see how that goes. Police Officers from Narre Warren Police Station are investigating the incident and say they have some promising leads.

A Berwick-based artists’ group has been left out in the cold by Casey Council after its grant funding application rejected at the 11th hour. City of Casey Council unanimously approved their 2017-’18 community grants recipients, with 81 groups sharing in $217,468 of grants this financial year. Council originally received 106 applications for this year’s round of grants requesting $286,554. The list of 81 final recipients was considered at a general council meeting on Tuesday 18 July, where Councillor Timothy Jackson altered the recommendation. The new recommendation removed grant money being awarded to Berwick-based Provenance Artists Inc and allocated it to the Berwick Business Group instead. Cr Jackson said removing Provenance Artists Inc from the list of grants was an unfortunate but necessary decision. “Unfortunately we were at the budgeted level for the grants, therefore something had to come out for any additional funding to occur, he said. “In discussion with my ward

partner Cr Susan Serey, we felt that it was only fair that if we wanted to add the funding for something in our ward then something in our ward had to come out. Cr Jackson said as much as he wanted to be able to award grants to many community groups, he had to take budget considerations into account. “The Berwick Business Group hosted a wonderful Christmas event for the community and local business which I attended. This was attended by more than 2500 people, he said. “While it would be great to be able to fund every event and every community group, it just isn’t feasible to do so. “I hope that should further money become available, we may be able to fund the art group again. President of Provenance Artists Inc Calvin Bell was contacted for comment, but declined to do so until he had a chance to speak with the group’s committee of management. By Cam Lucadou-Wells There was an array of wonder cooked up at the Old Cheese Factory, Berwick during the school holidays. In something of a crafts fantasy, children and parents disappeared into a ball room of pingpong balls, explored a strange garden, made Lego works and fashioned crafts with Dell Stewart.

Long lens of law ’n’ order

Educating and caring for children from 6 weeks to 5 years Offering weekly incursion subjects such as science, language, yoga, sport, music and movement

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A former cop, with an eye for social issues, is setting his camera sights on the bullying scourge. Damien Howard has released a ‘shock’ ad on family violence, having seen more than his share during his time as a Casey police officer. Over 30 seconds, it pans from a bruised woman in a hospital bed to her mother and her daughter downcast by her bedside. Then there’s her husband seated in a police interview with photos of the physical damage he’d inflicted. “Who have you hurt today?” the ad asks. It speaks of domestic violence’s broad impact on not just the survivor but her children, family and friends. One in four children experience family violence and then copy the parents’ tortured dynamics. They are three times more likely to be perpetrators or victims as adults. Countless times, Mr Howard has sat on the other side of the desk in a police interview room. He was able to capture an authentic tone and detail to the scene. He achieved “phenomenal” production values - including the convincing work of a bruise make-up artist - despite shooting on a shoestring $800 budget.

He said no other issue took up so much police time. The ad has since been submitted to film festivals, and is viewable online. Next project is a short film on a 17-year-old too afraid to come out of her bedroom because of school bullying. “It’s a topical issue both in schools and in the workplace,” Mr Howard says. “The bullies in the workplace were probably bullies in high school.”

Having resigned from Victoria Police two years ago, Mr Howard proudly received a Police Service Medal for 10 years on the force. Now he is dedicated to being a film-maker. Recently, he has worked as a runner and location manager on Neighbours and films shot in Melbourne. However the schedule of film works at Docklands Studios is quiet at the moment, he says. He is now casting an eye to moving to Canada’s busy film scene, perhaps as soon as next year. To view Mr Howard’s family violence ad, go to vimeo. com/218320118

The night was attended by Rotarians, business leaders, Casey mayor Sam Aziz, councillors Amanda Stapledon and Rex Flannery, and Rotary District Governor Donald Ripper. Since 1976, Rotary Club of Narre Warren has run a range of programs and activities for the community. It also offers leadership, networking, management and public speaking opportunities.

Tony Purcell cuts a 25th anniversary cake at Berwick Arts Society. 170552 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS “It’s got good footballers, good walking tracks and all the rest of it. But a city without culture is a city without a soul.” The soon-to-open $125 million Bunjil Place may be that cultural centre where people will come to

view Casey artists’ work, Mr Purcell said. Whether it’s due to the uprise of electronics, he thinks painting has less grip on the younger generation. “I think it will survive. We have very good artists here, Victoria has

very fine artists with worldwide acceptance.” Berwick Art Society celebrates its 25th anniversary at The Cheese Factory, Berwick, on 26 July, 7.30pm. Its AGM is held that evening at 6.45pm.

When you paint or draw, you can think of nothing else but painting and drawing, says Berwick Art Society president Tony Purcell. “It’s like a therapy,” he says. “Any problems you’ve got they’re gone.” For much of the art society’s 25 years, Mr Purcell has been a part of it, plying his brush and watercolours. He joins up to 30 other visual artists of the group at The Old Cheese Factory, Berwick, each Thursday. According to its mission statement, it is a supportive, strongly social group for all forms of visual art. It’s hub of talk, paint and friendship, Mr Purcell says. “It’s not only a friendly group at Berwick Art Society, but it’s a therapy for them.” The 88-year-old former army major and HR lecturer didn’t start painting until he retired 23 years ago. His realist art often tells a story - just by placing a couple of people or animals within a landscape or a city scene. “People say why not try oils and pastels, but I only have so much life on this planet. I must make use of it to work on the hard one - water colour.” He doesn’t like to sell his work these days, preferring to paint for himself and his family. “You’re (otherwise) selling a little bit of yourself and I’m not happy about that.” In the British and Australian armies, Mr Purcell served in Egypt, Germany, Singapore and the Malayan Emergency. He has now made it his “mantra” or “mission” to establish a stronger arts presence in Casey.

to be legitimate but the results of our random audits show that people are making mistakes.” Ms Anderson said there were three golden rules to follow which would help taxpayers to get their deductions right. “One - you have to have spent the money yourself and can’t have been reimbursed, two the claim must be directly related to earning your income, and three - you need a record to prove it,” she said. For more information about work-related expenses, visit ato.gov.au/deductions and to find out about myDeductions, visit ato.gov.au/mydeductions.

1190540-RC27-15

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is increasing attention, scrutiny and education on workrelated expenses this tax time. Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said that last year over 6.3 million people made a work-related expense claim for clothing and laundry expenses, totalling almost $1.8 billion. “We have seen claims for clothing and laundry expenses increase around 20 per cent over the last five years. While this increase isn’t a sign that all of these taxpayers are doing the wrong thing, it is giving us a reason to pay extra attention,” she said. Ms Anderson says common mistakes the ATO has seen include people claiming ineligible clothing, claiming for something without having spent the money, and not being able to explain the basis for how the claim was calculated. “I heard a story recently about a taxpayer purchasing everyday clothes who was told by the sales assistant that they could claim a deduction for the clothing if they also wore them to work,” Ms Anderson said. “This is not the case. You can’t claim a deduction for everyday clothing you bought to wear to work, even if your employer tells you to wear a certain colour or you have a dress code,” she said. “For your clothing to be eligible for a deduction, it needs to be occupation-specific clothing, protective clothing or a uniform that is unique to the organisation you work for,” she said. Ms Anderson said it is a myth that you could claim a standard deduction of $150 without spending money on appropriate clothing or laundry. She said that while record-keeping requirements for laundry expenses were relaxed for claims up to this threshold, taxpayers did need to be able to show how they calculated their deduction. “Over 1.6 million taxpayers claim a deduction of exactly $150. We expect many of these claims

Lastgasp winner... Berwick's big steal Page 49

Connecting people with the local sport they love.

Yash aims to be the best By Nick Creely For someone still so young, budding cricket superstar Yash Pednekar possesses a maturity so rare and precious. Even despite racking up the accolades - DDCA Under 15 Player of the Season in 2016/17, Vic School Boys representation and selection in the Australian Under 16 team - he remains level-headed and respectful to a sport he dearly loves. The 15-year-old North Dandenong product, who currently attends Beaconhills College in Berwick, has a new accolade to add to his already prestigious collection - the Greater Dandenong Junior Athlete of the Year. It came off a year where he piled on 563 junior runs at DDCA level for the Maroons, and also made his Premier Cricket debut for Richmond and represented the Southern Pioneers in representative cricket. As a youngster idolising cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar, the legspinning all-rounder is dreaming of a future in the game and simply feels humbled to be recognised by his community for such a prestigious award. “I didn’t know I was going to get it (the award) - it was a great surprise and it felt great to be acknowledged as one of the athlete’s coming through - it motivates me even more being noticed and just makes me work even harder,” Pednekar said. “I want to give back to the community for supporting me throughout my journey so far - it’s not just the North Dandenong Cricket Club, but also Adrian Jones for nominating me - it’s great having the community behind me that’s for sure.” Pednekar lives a busy cricketing lifestyle, with hectic training schedules throughout the off-season hopefully holding him in good stead for what is set to be a defining 2017/18 season. Back in April, Pednekar was one of three young Victorians selected to represent Australia in September of this year, and will only months later play a junior international series against Pakistan, proudly wearing his national colours. “I’ve been training with the Victorian Academy and been doing some work with my batting coach - I’ve been training quite a lot,” he said. “I’ve just received a scholarship to

The achievements keep on coming for young cricketer Yash Pednekar. 166976 Caulfield Grammar so I’ll be playing school cricket for them when I move at the end of this term, and when I’m not there I’ll be playing Premier Cricket with Richmond which is exciting. “I also want to perform well in the upcoming National Under 17s tournament and also try and help the Australian Under 16s against Pakistan win the series, and also to just expand my game and get to know my game and

what works for me and what doesn’t.” Pednekar is an astute learner of the game, and studies the way his favourite cricketers both prepare on and off-field in order to get the best out of themselves. His leadership and game is growing and expanding day by day, and recognises the mental side of the game - arguably the most important aspect in a cricketer’s career.

“This year I was in the Southern Pioneers, later on this year it starts in December and ends in January, so I might be captain in that - I know a lot of the strengths and weaknesses of a lot of those boys and I get along with them well,” he said. “Throughout the journey, I’ve loved the way Sachin Tendulkar goes about it, but also Steve Smith - he is just unique but backs his ability and proves

Picture: ROB CAREW that belief overrides experience or how many games you have played. “If you believe in yourself, it’s worth more than the amount of experience you have. “I just want to improve my fitness overall because I’ll need to play games continually this year, and also just mentally get stronger and be positive in negative situations because they arise a lot.”

Grand final turnaround - one fine day at Holm Park By David Nagel Beaconsfield’s Holm Park Reserve looks set to be the next home of the South East Football Netball League grand final after AFL South East opened the door for a day grand final to take place on Saturday 16 September. AFL South East has listened to the 18 member clubs - nine football, nine netball - and reconsidered its original decision to host this year’s grand final under lights at Casey Fields. AFLSE contacted the club’s representative as late as Friday 14 July with news that - despite serious angst from the clubs - the night grand final would go ahead.

But at an AFLSE commission meeting on Monday 17 July, SEFNL chairman and AFLSE commissioner Ryan Ford spoke on behalf of the clubs and their recommendation to hold the season decider at the venue of a member club - during the day. The clubs had until yesterday, Wednesday 26 July, to put forward a compliant application to host the day grand final, with the options being Beaconsfield, Berwick or Pakenham. It’s understood Berwick is not keen to host the biggest day of the season, with its unbeaten team likely to be competing, while there are significant roadblocks in place thwarting Paken-

ham’s tender process. It leaves Beaconsfield as the likely venue. Key issues of concern for the clubs over the night grand final concept included the split of football and netball for the big day - with football and netball being 400-metres apart at Casey Fields - and the uncertainty surrounding who would benefit financially from the biggest event on the calendar. Initial plans for the night grand final would see all 10 netball games -from Under 13s through to A Grade played during the day, concurrent with the Under 19s and reserves football, before the senior grand final would

take centre stage under lights. AFLSE Region General Manager John Anderson explained that the overall decision was a complex one. “There will be a sense of relief from the clubs, there’s no doubt about that, their thoughts came through loud and clear,” Anderson said. “If the decision was purely based around football, I still firmly believe that Casey Fields is the ideal venue to host the grand final. But netball strongly influenced the decision; the clubs were united that the netball and football should be played simultaneously at the same venue throughout the day.” Anderson said the ball was now in

the clubs’ court. “If a compliant application is not forthcoming, Casey Fields is still a viable option,” Anderson explained. The Gazette has spoken with several clubs since the latest announcement, all praising AFLSE for taking their thoughts on board. The first three weeks of the finals are also up for tender, with Berwick the favourite to host the preliminary final on Saturday 9 September. Officer, the venue of the last two grand finals, is an attractive proposition for some, but looks set to be vacant for the duration of the finals series.

Demons simply too good By Nick Creely VICTORIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 14 Casey has kept their perfect home record intact with a gritty 16-point victory over Essendon at Casey Fields on a windy and icy Saturday night. The victory was the Demons’ fifth on their home deck this year after only losing two matches at the venue in 2016 from 11 games, as they continue to put away sides at their fortress. Their latest victim was the Bombers currently sitting comfortably in sixth spot on the VFL ladder. Bailey Fritsch was the man that got the ball rolling, converting the first major after taking an uncontested mark 30 metres out. But from there it was all Essendon, who were able to kick four of the next five goals to take a 15-point quarter time lead. As conditions became windier and the temperature dropping by the second, the game tightened up considerably, with both sides struggling to attack with any potency. A fantastic goal out of a pack to Angus Scott saw the first goal of the quarter kicked in the 22nd minute, before Cam Pedersen converted right before the half time siren to give the Demons a narrow lead. That narrow lead was quickly slashed early in the third with a Josh Begley goal in the opening minutes, before the Demons kicked on with their momentum, kicking three goals in four minutes to consolidate an 11-point lead midway through the third term. But a strong response by the Dons late in the quarter ensured the game would go down to the wire. Much like the second quarter, the Demons’ defenders stood tall among a barrage of attacking opportunities to the Dons,

and combined with strong midfielders Ben Kennedy and Angus Brayshaw, were able to swing the game into a winning position off the back of three unanswered goals. We had a lot more mature team in this week and we had a bunch of players who played their roles and competed,” coach Justin Plapp said. “There was nothing pretty about it (the game), but it was pretty effective. “We had a lot of buy-in from our players, so I thought it was a really strong team result.” In heart-warming scenes, Brayshaw made his return to football after a long delay due to lingering concussions, gathering plenty of disposals and providing the Demons with a presence in the midfield. “He probably exceeded what we felt he was going to give us tonight, so full credit to him,” Plapp said. “He is certainly a player we need playing and being healthy, so it was a good return from him.” Bailey Fritsch (three goals) played arguably his finest VFL game, marking everything that came his way up forward, Kennedy was excellent through the midfield and Jimmy Munro was typically industrious and tough at the clinches. Beaconsfield youngster Bailey Morrish was Casey’s 23rd man after a similar stint with Williamstown earlier this season. Casey moves into seventh spot on the VFL ladder ahead of a home clash this Sunday against Coburg at 2pm. Earlier that day, Casey’s Development League team defeated Northern Blues by 15-points, 7.12(54) to 5.9(39). Dylan Gordon was named best for the Demons.

Comets drop to ninth on ladder

Powerhouse clubs Berwick and Doveton remain locked in a tight tussle for a top two spot. 166493 Picture: ROB CAREW with both teams needing to keep in touch with the leaders it was expected to be a close game. However, with two goals in two minutes early in the second half by Beaumaris it was all over and City suffered only their third loss of the year going down 3-1. Berwick stay in third place but are now two games outside the promotion spots with only 6 rounds to go and will find it tough to catch Eltham and Doveton who continued on their winning ways. Berwick are back at home this Saturday against Heatherton United. Doveton, meanwhile, defeated Frankston Pines FC 3-0 in a one sided affair at Monterey Reserve on Saturday and are now equal with Eltham at

the top-of-the-ladder. STATE LEAGUE 5 - SOUTH Due to poor pitch conditions, Pakenham United were not able to play their scheduled match against Somerville at Barber Reserve. This is not the first time that the United have had to call a game off this season. But the news was better down at Prospect Hill Reserve, with Bunyip defeating Casey Panthers SC 2-4 in the Strikers’ best performance of the season. In other matches across the round, Drouin fell 2-3 to White Star Dandenong, Dandenong Warriors defeated Lyndale United 5-2, Old Mentonians were no chance against Rowville 2-5 and Chelsea stunned Sandown 2-1 in one of the year’s biggest upsets.

FFV STATE LEAGUES REVIEW - ROUND 16 STATE LEAGUE 1 - SOUTH EAST A disappointing 0-2 loss to St Kilda SC has seen the Casey Comets fall into ninth spot, as its tough season continued at Comets Stadium on Saturday. St Kilda managed a goal in each half as the Comets barely gave a whimper, looking like a team desperate to limp its way to the end of the season. They travel to Park Avenue Reserve next Saturday to face Manningham United Blues. In other matches, Mornington defeated Mooroolbark 4-0, Malvern City drew 2-2 with Clifton Hill, Langwarrin SC were out staged by Warragul 2-3, Morwell Pegasus comfortably brushed aside Manningham United 3-1 and Caulfield won 3-0 over South Springvale. STATE LEAGUE 2 - SOUTH EAST Berwick City travelled to Beaumaris in a vital clash for both teams who were sitting third and fourth respectively on the ladder. Berwick made a promising start when David Di Iorio scored in the 6th minute from close range after a fine double save from the Beaumaris keeper. The goal seemed to sting the home team into action who lifted and pressed to find an equaliser which eventually came not long after. All square at the break and

Cavaliers grind it out By Nick Creely BIG V BASKETBALL REVIEW - ROUND 17 STATE CHAMPIONSHIP MEN The Casey Cavaliers have spoilt Eltham’s chances of finishing top two, winning 87-80 on Saturday in one of their grittiest performances of the season. With the Wildcats requiring a win to stay in touch at the top, the Cavs certified their own finals ambitions by denying the hosts in a tense last quarter. Michael McInnes (19 points, five rebounds) led the way on the sheet for the Cavs, with four others reaching double figures. The Cavs then returned home to face the struggling Corio Bay Stingrays on Sunday, dismantling the visitors 103-61. In a truly dominate performance by the finals bound Cavs, eight players reached double figures, with Raheem Lemons (24 points, 14 rebounds) absolutely mighty in the win. Casey will play their final homeand-away match of the season on Saturday night at the State Basketball Centre against Knox, a massive test

against the top team before the finals. DIVISION ONE WOMEN Unless something drastic happens in the final round match against Whittlesea Pacers, the Cavs will face relegation into Division Two in 2018. They sit bottom of the ladder - only just - after almost pinching victory against Mildura on Saturday night. The final scoreline read 84-91 in one of the Cav’s most impressive performances of the season. Rebecca Borham (22 points, four assists) led the way for the home side in the narrow loss. YOUTH LEAGUE TWO MEN After finishing the season in second spot, the Cavs enjoyed a rare week off as Collingwood, Westernport, Craigieburn and Maccabi battled it out in elimination finals over the weekend. The Cavs will host Craigieburn at Casey Stadium on Saturday in the second elimination final, while only down the road Pakenham Warriors battle it out with Collingwood. YOUTH LEAGUE TWO WOMEN The third placed Cavaliers enjoyed a strong start to the weekend, defeating Pakenham Warriors 83-64 at Casey Stadium.

By Russell Bennett

There is just one more round until the Cavs get stuck into finals action. 167974 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS In a tight first three quarters, the Cavs pulled away with a 25-16 final quarter to claim the victory. Peta Rhodes (14 points) led the way for the home side. It was then off to Sunbury on Sunday to take on the Jets, going down 76-64. The Cavs started in stunning fash-

ion, jumping the top placed side 16-9, before the Jets fought back in the second half to comfortably brush aside the visitors. Casey rounds out its home-and-away season with a clash against bottom side Whittlesea Pacers, as it fine-tunes it’s game before a big finals series.

Stingrays dominate All-Australian squad By Nick Creely The Dandenong Stingrays have dominated the AFL Women’s Under-18 All-Australian squad, with four star youngsters nominated in the 54-player list. Of all of the 12 TAC Cup clubs, the ‘Rays produced the most AllAustralian members, ahead of the Calder Cannons, Eastern Ranges and Geelong Falcons with three each. The most notable of the four is Bridie Kennedy, who was crowned the inaugural TAC Cup Girls bestand-fairest earlier this year. Kennedy plays her football with Cranbourne in the VFL Women’s competition, and is undoubtedly set to go high in this year’s AFL Women’s draft. Other ‘Rays to make it, defender Courtney Jones and midfielders Jordyn Allen and Georgia Gee, all had particularly outstanding carnivals. Gee was best afield in the very last match on 14 July against Western Australia, playing a starring role for Vic Country in its 22-point victory. In a stunning tournament for

Vic Country, who was undefeated throughout, they had a total of 15-players selected - among 24 Vics in total - in the 54-player squad. Gippsland Power duo Darcy Guttridge, who is also one of the most promising stars on Cranbourne’s list, and Tyla Hanks were both named, with Hanks winning Country’s MVP award. The squad also includes 10 representatives from Queensland, eight from Western Australia, five from ACT and seven from the Allies (a combined squad representing South Australian, Tasmania and Northern Territory) and also nine players selected from Vic Metro. TAC Cup players in the squad: Defenders: Rebecca Webster (VC - Murray Bushrangers), Courtney Jones (VC - Dandenong Stingrays), Iilish Ross (VC - Murray Bushrangers), Bridie Kennedy (VC - Dandenong Stingrays), Lucy McEvoy (VC - Geelong Falcons), Georgia Clarke (VC - GWV Rebels), Olivia Vesley (VM - Sandringham Dragons), Georgia Ricardo (VM - Sandringham Dragons), Georgia

Officer’s St Francis Xavier College will play host to two games of the AFL’s International Cup next month. Every three years the AFL invites teams from across the world to take part in the tournament - a three-week competition that will this year feature the likes of Papua New Guinea, Ireland, Canada, Europe, the USA, Nauru, Pakistan and Great Britain. As part of the competition, games have been scheduled on Wednesday, 9 August at various schools across the state. St Francis Xavier’s Officer campus has been confirmed to host the Canada versus Pakistan women’s game as well as the Canada versus Great Britain men’s game. Darren Thomas, the sport and recreation co-ordinator at St Francis in Officer, said it would provide the athletes with the chance to see what an Australian school looks like and how it operated, and to interact with the students. “The games would provide students with an opportunity to experience AFL being played by athletes who are considered the best in their country, as well as allowing them to get a small insight into their respective cultures through a pre-match Q&A (question and answer session),” he added. The 2017 International Cup will be played in Melbourne from 5 to 19 August. The 2014 competition was made up of 18 men’s and seven women’s teams. This year marks the sixth International Cup, and the AFL’s head of community and international development, Grant Williams, said he expected the 2017 carnival to be the biggest yet. “The popularity of Australian football overseas continues to grow, with more players and fans taking up and supporting our game,” he said. “Following the success of the AFL International Cup in 2014, we will again conduct a round of IC17 matches at suburban and country grounds to give participants an authentic Australian football experience. “We look forward to welcoming players from North America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific.” No expatriate Australians are eligible to play in the tournament. Teams are made up solely of amateurs who must be nationals of the country they represent.

Badgers game sells out fast By Russell Bennett It took just 26 hours for the Casey Basketball Association to sell out Melbourne United’s game with the Wisconsin Badgers at their newly redeveloped showcourt at Cranbourne’s Casey Stadium on 20 August. That’s just how high the demand was for tickets to see Melbourne’s NBL stars take on the might of the NCAA Division 1 college young guns. In a huge boost to grassroots sport in the local area, the Casey Basketball Association has packed out its newly redeveloped facility for the second time in three months following the Big V Origin All Star Series held back in June. “This highlights how hard the Casey Basketball Association is working to ensure that the best quality of basketball is getting showcased at one of the best facilities in the country for our members and the lo-

cal community,” said Casey Basketball’s marketing and communications officer, and Cavaliers State Championship Men’s player Ashley Szalek. “In only 26 hours the game was completely sold out - showing how popular basketball has become in one of the state’s largest growth corridors. “After selling out in only one day, the phone has continued to ring constantly with more and more people after our elusive tickets for this game. “Unfortunately all the tickets have been allocated and we simply cannot fit any more people into the court to see the two teams go head-to-head. “We can’t wait to see the new showcourt filled to the rafters with members of the Casey Basketball Association and the wider community. “Casey Basketball Association will continue working to bring more games like this one to the City of Casey.”

Casey Stadium's spectacular new showcourt will host a significant basketball event next month.

Invincibles scrape through By David Nagel Berwick’s quest for the perfect season remains intact - but only just - after the Wickers kicked two late goals to sink a brave Doveton by four points, 10.11(71) to 10.7(67), at Edwin Flack Reserve on Saturday. Trailing by 10 points at three-quarter time, the Doves took advantage of a strong breeze, kicking the first three goals of the final term to lead by nine points at the 24-minute mark. Berwick’s 12-game winning streak appeared over, but a classy finish from Lucas Jellyman-Turner cut the margin to three. Jayden Graham then narrowly missed his opportunity to be the hero before running half back Luke Sheppard received a handball from Graham to kick the winner from 15 metres out at the 30-minute mark. His thoughts were swirling as he ran into goal. “I was crapping my pants to be honest,” Sheppard said shortly after the victory. “It was a clean tap on by Gunny (Tim Gunn), then (Jayden) Graham gave me the hands and it was pretty straight forward in the end, but very nerve racking.” The Wickers have been dominant in recent times, but it took a completely different skill set to get across the line against the Doves. “We’ve been travelling alright; beating teams convincingly, but today was our first real challenge to see how we would respond under real pressure,” Sheppard said. “Doveton took it to us for pretty much the whole game, they pressed forward real well, their midfield got on top of ours I thought, but just to dig deep, when we hadn’t had that opportunity this year, to do that was really pleasing.” Harry Money kicked three in his first game for the season for the winners, while skipper Madi Andrews joined Sheppard and Jayden Joyce as his sides’ best performers. Doveton ruckman Russ Gabriel was superb, feeding Sam Raru, Nick Battle

Officer champion Ben Tivendale will run out for his 300th senior game against Beaconsfield at Holm Park Reserve on Saturday. 170798 Picture: ROB CAREW and Aaron Davey on a silver platter, while Taylor Joyce kicked three including a booming team-lifter in the final term. A resurgent Narre Warren 8.9(57) is now double-chance bound after a stirring 19-point victory over arch-rival Cranbourne 4.14(38) at Kalora Park. The Eagles led a scrappy first half by a point before the Magpies ran rampant, kicking 6.2 to 1.3 to take a 28-point lead at the final change. It was a special third term from the Magpies with two goals to Trent Cody,

and singles to Jack Soroczynski, Sam McLean, Dale Gawley and Dylan Quirk cutting a swathe through the Eagles’ defence. Cody was joined by fellow midfielders Josh Tonna, Dean Kelly and Michael Collins on the best players’ list. In other games, Beaconsfield 12.12(84) proved too strong for Tooradin 9.7(61), while Officer 11.10(76) made it back-to-back victories with a convincing performance against Pakenham 5.6(36).

Seagulls home in late rally By David Nagel Tooradin-Dalmore has reminded everyone in the South East Football Netball League of its true premiership credentials with a gutsy come-from-behind victory over a brave Beaconsfield on Saturday. The Seagulls were blown off the court by the fired-up Eagles in the first quarter, before regaining composure to triumph 45-42 in one of the games of the season. The Eagles were brilliant early, relishing the return of Rylee Nelson (centre) to the midcourt they opened up a 14-9 lead at quarter time. Taylah Jencke (goal keeper) and Dani Cameron (goal defence) were keeping the Seagulls goalers under wraps while Ash Gill (wing attack) and Kate Murphy (wing defence) were busy by Nelson’s side. They maintained their fivegoal advantage at half time before the Seagulls, like great teams do, decided to lift the tempo when it mattered most. The move of Sara Duncan to centre, and Alex Maher (goal shooter) to the number-one target under the ring, changed the complexion of the match, with the Seagulls cutting the margin to one with a 13-9 third quarter.

Maher scored 11 of her team’s goals, benefiting from the wonderful work of Jess Cox (GA), Emma Iacovou (WA) and Ebony Dolan (WD), while Bec Kinna (GD) raised her game in defence. The Seagulls had the momentum and surged ahead with a 1410 final term to claim a memorable victory. Back-to-back champions Narre Warren welcomed back some serious talent for its 51-29 victory over Cranbourne. Gabby Dwyer, Tayla Shannon and Chloe Phillips returned to the attacking end of the court, while Kara Hargrave shored up an already impenetrable defensive unit. The Magpies were brutal with their defence in the first half, allowing Cranbourne goalers Tegan Stahl, Alanah Hardy and Tahlia Coates just 10 goals to half time. Doveton is about to embark on the toughest run home of any team in the competition after a 5941 victory over Berwick at Edwin Flack Reserve. The fourth-placed Doves face Tooradin, Beaconsfield, Narre Warren and Cranbourne over the coming weeks, the perfect test ahead of finals. The Doves looked a different

unit with quality goaler Rahni Samason (GS) in their side, the VNL star scoring 45 goals for the afternoon. Her work was made easier by the great feeds of Liz Edwards and Hayley Stewart, while Mel Webster (GD) and Leah Seeto (WD) kept things tightly sealed in defence. Berwick’s youngsters will learn a lot from the outing, particularly Madelina Nyoul (GK) who played the majority of the game on Samason, while Bec Langford (GD) and Renee Gill (WD) also worked hard to stop the flow. And ROC won its first game since round three with a 55-28 victory over Pakenham. The Kangaroos dominated the contest for all but one quarter, when the Lions scored 12 to 13 in the second term. The Kangas gained great drive from Ash Barnett (C) in the middle, while Sam Neil (GA), Olivia Hamilton (WA), Mel Overdyk (GK) and Laura Quinn (GD) stuck to their guns for the full duration of the match. The Lions remain winless, but players like Keely Wright (GD), Carly Saunders (GA), Christine Meyer (GS) and Katrina Meredith (C/WA) are trying hard to gain that first elusive win. Hampton Park had the bye.

The Kangaroos have now won back-to-back games and travel to Beaconsfield this week to celebrate the 300th senior game of club legend Ben Tivendale. The 36-year-old star will join his childhood hero Robbie Young, and former team-mates Mick Moylan and Kable Dowsett on the club’s most illustrious honour roll. The seven-time best and fairest winner, who bleeds blue and white, said it was a great honour to join Young, Moylan and Dowsett in a quartet of

high achievers. “It’s a pretty special achievement I suppose,” he said. “I remember coming here when I was seven or eight years old and watching Robbie Young; he was a legend, and I got to play senior footy with him. I played a lot with Mick and a bit with Kable as well, so to reach a milestone that only three other blokes have achieved - I’m very proud of it. It’s a lot of footy to play, especially with the one club.”

Motoring

 Reviews and news…

Take this Mazda on a tour By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Mazda CX-5 has been a hit in Australia since it arrived here just over five years ago. Now the second generation has been introduced. It features interesting style, improvements to the powertrains and uprated technology. A new Touring model has been added to the CX-5 range. Style was one of the big selling features of the original Mazda CX-5. The new one carries the same overall theme, but with a smoothing out of the lines, almost to the extent of being minimalistic. The CX-5’s upright grille is bold, with the upper and lower areas matching neatly. The doors have sculpting in their lower areas and the C-pillar treatment is interesting. However we feel that the rear lights are rather small. The CX-5’s instruments are sporty in their layout, clear and easy to use. Infotainment from the Mazda MZD Connect system is accessed through a seven-inch full-colour touchscreen. There's AM and FM, as well as DAB+ radio. Connectivity is by Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio, Aux, and USB. Control is through steering wheel buttons for many functions, there’s also Mazda’s handy Commander ro-

Smooth flowing style is a feature of the new Mazda CX-5 midsize SUV. tary controller on the centre console. The central screen is a good size and has Mazda's attention to minimisation of driver distraction. Satellite navigation is optional on the CX-5 Maxx but standard on all other variants. At a time when some companies are offering little or no choice of drivetrains, Mazda has a large suite. Though based on the powerplants of the superseded CX-5, they have significant improvements. All use Mazda’s unusual SkyActiv technology. A 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol has 114 kW, and 200 Nm at a highish 4000 rpm. There’s also a 2.5-litre petrol producing 140 kW, and 251 Nm, again at

4000 rpm. Both engines are naturallyaspirated rather than turbocharged, which probably explains why then need plenty of revs to get the torque to its peak. Mazda Australia has again specified the petrol engines be detuned slightly to suit Australia’s low-grade 91 octane standard petrol. A 2.2-litre turbo-diesel puts out up to 129 kW of power, with 420 Nm of torque at 2000 revs. A six-speed manual is on offer with the smaller petrol engine, all others have a six-speed automatic transmission. This auto is also mated to the 2.0-litre petrol when requested. Power is taken to either the front

wheels alone, or to all four wheels for added traction on slippery roads. Our test CX-5 Touring had the larger petrol engine, automatic transmission and AWD, which is likely to be the most popular combination. All CX-5 models have six airbags, automatic emergency braking, smart city braking, blind spot monitoring, front and rear and rear cross traffic alert and a rear view camera that's backed up by rear parking sensors.

There’s comfortable seating inside for four adults, with a fifth being possible without too much hip and shoulder rubbing. However, it’s very much a 40:20:40 layout and may not suit all those in the centre seat if they are on the wide side. Rear seat legroom may prove marginal if a tall person sits behind a driver more than about 1.7 meters tall. The back seats can be set at two angles to let you juggle luggage/ passenger space. Large armrests are a feature we really liked in the front seats. Boot volume, at 442 litres, is almost 10 per cent greater than in the superseded CX-5. A spacesaver wheel/ tyre is used to give added depth to the boot. The area is easy to load and the rear seatbacks can be lowered by using levers in the load area. Ride comfort is impressively smooth on smooth roads and still better than average when the surfaces deteriorate. Mazda's second generation CX-5 is an impressive piece of engineering. The original was good, this one is significantly better. The Mazda range is available for test drive at Berwick Mazda, Prestige Place, Narre Warren on 8796 6222 or at Bruce Clough Mazda, Princes Highway, Nar Nar Goon, on 5942 5584.
