Pest fee fleece By Jeremy Sollars Rural producer anger over the Southern Downs Regional Council’s new pest management rates charge and its possible move to lease out the Warwick Saleyards is set to boil over at a public meeting in a fortnight’s time at Freestone. Farmers and other rural landowners across the Southern Downs and Granite Belt are seething over the council’s ‘Invasive Pest Control Scheme’ (IPCS) introduced in the 2017-2018 budget, which will result in potentially huge financial penalties for those who fail to comply. Rates notices issued across the region last week to landowners with holdings zoned ‘Agriculture and Farming’, ‘Horticulture’, ‘Commercial and Industrial’, ‘Residential 4’ and others show an amount for the pest management charge based on a cents-in-the-dollar land valuation. But the charge is listed as a ‘concession’ and only payable if landowners either fail to meet their obligations under the IPCS to control invasive weeds and animal pests on their properties, or if they fail to submit a ‘Control Works’ form outlining their private pest management strategy by Friday 18 August. If the council deems it payable, the charge will be levied as a ‘Supplementary Rates Notice’, issued “towards the end of the financial year”, according to a council spokesman. The minimum ‘special charge’ is $500, but some landowners have been ‘granted’ a ‘concession’ on their rates notices in the thousands, depending on the valuation of their properties. Landowners who fail to comply and who have parcels zoned Agriculture and Farming categories 1, 2 and 3, and Horticulture 1, 2 and 3 will pay a ‘supplementary rate’ of 0.50 cents in the dollar of the rateable value of their holdings, with the minimum charge of $500 applicable. Owners of land zoned Residential 4, Commercial and Industrial (Town and Rural), Extractive and Special Uses will pay 0.30 cents in the dollar, also with a minimum $500 charge. The council has insisted the scheme is essential to help control the spread of invasive weeds and pest animals, but many in the region’s farming sector have dismissed it as a money-grab, with former deputy mayor Ross Bartley going as far as to label it “extortion”. Mr Bartley - who farms family property in the Junabee area - is calling on Warwick and Stanthorpe producers and all other interested landowners to attend a public meeting planned for 11am on Thursday 10 August at the Freestone Memorial Hall. “The main topics to be discussed will be the pest management scheme and the future of the Warwick Saleyards,” he told the Free Times this week. “Obviously, the pest scheme is in the budget, we knew it was going to be in the budget, but there is a lot of anger about it in the rural community. Littlies enjoy tree jumpers
Rugrats all rugged up: Childcare providers Pamela and Michael’s Enhance Family Day Care took their ‘little people’ on a trip down town to view the JJJ tree jumpers before the crowds this week. Free Times arts and events columnist SUE KEONG said the children were very well informed “and proudly told me that the statue on Palmerin Street was that of Thomas Joseph Byrnes, former Premier of Queensland”. See more of Sue’s Jumpers and Jazz coverage inside on page 2, and further festival coverage on pages 4 and 5.

In brief Council to review garbage tender Goondiwindi Regional Council this week heard there was incorrect information contained in a report submitted to council’s 12 July 2017 meeting regarding tenders for the collection of kerbside waste and another for the management of the Goondiwindi landfill site. Mayor Graeme Scheu said the report’s errors and their potential consequences made it critical for council to review its decision on the tenders. “Council made a decision based on what we now know was incorrect information,’’ Cr Scheu said. “It is therefore imperative that council review that decision” The mayor called the special meeting to repeal or amend the resolutions that were made on 12 July under section 262 of the Local Government Act 2009. He said the repeal of the resolutions council made on 12 July meant council would return to the tender evaluation process and make its decision again. “Before that happens, I want to ensure that the information we rely on to make that decision is 100 per cent correct. I have asked an independent third party to review the price calculations and present its findings to council”. He said, in keeping section 258 of the Local Government Act 2009, council would give two days’ notice of the special meeting. “The meeting will be advertised and all tenderers advised exactly what is happening,’’ he said.

Explosives go off By Jeremy Sollars An application to establish an explosives disposal site on a rural property west of Warwick was approved by the Southern Downs Regional Council at the general meeting in Stanthorpe yesterday. The application was lodged with the council by Ipswich-based firm Extech Explosives, which provides services to the mining and engineering sectors. The proposal is to establish a site to be used for the disposal of explosives from the mining industry. Blasting would be carried out six days a month, with a maximum of four blasts a day. A maximum of 1000 kilograms of explosives would be held on-site at any given time. Mayor Tracy Dobie used her casting vote in favour of the application after a deadlock of councillors. Cr Cameron Gow was absent from the meeting with Councillors Sheryl Windle, Yve Stocks, Vic Pennisi and Marika McNichol voting against the application and Councillors Neil Meiklejohn, Rod Kelly and Deputy Mayor Jo McNally in favour. The site is to be located on a grazing property on the Cunningham Highway at Karara, ‘Waraghai’, owned by Donald and Angela McLeish. The principal opponents of the
Tim Ruddick and Belinda Marriage of Tillari Trotters. plan are Belinda Marriage and partner Tim Ruddick, whose neighbouring property ‘Tillari’ is their home and business ‘Tillari Trotters’, which specialises in free range pork and lamb and other agricultural products. The couple had also been planning a farmstay for autistic children
which is now unlikely to proceed. The couple did not lodge a formal objection to the Extech application but are adamant that blasting and associated impacts will have a detrimental impact on their farming operations, including stress caused to livestock by blasting.
They claim that mapping and GPS co-ordinates in the application are at odds in showing the exact location of the proposed blasting site and that the council’s proposed approval conditions only provide for a one-kilometre buffer zone from any boundary of the ‘Waraghai’ property. They also claim blasting could affect native animal species in the area and that Extech did not carry out an Indigenous cultural assessment of the property. It is understood a similar application by Extech was rejected earlier this year by the Goondiwindi Regional Council. Ms Marriage has also claimed Extech advised the council it would engage the Karara Rural Fire Brigade to conduct dampening down of the blasting site, but that the brigade had no knowledge of such a suggestion. She was yesterday granted a fiveminute address to the councillors, but it was to no avail. A devastated Ms Marriage told the Free Times shortly before this week’s deadline that Cr Dobie’s casting vote in favour of the Extech plan was “a vote against farming and against tourism”. An Extech spokesman told the Free Times the company had “no comment until due process has been followed”.

The fate of the Warwick Town Hall toilet block hangs in the balance, with public submissions on an application to have the toilets State Heritage listed closing this coming Monday, 31 July. The council requires state approval to demolish the brick toilets, which mayor Tracy Dobie has deemed to be unsafe and “an eyesore”. The toilets fall inside the State Heritage listing of the Warwick Town Hall and as such the council applied in June to the State Department of Environment and Heritage Protection for demolition approval. But in a counter-move, the Southern Downs ‘RANGE’ Residents’ Action Group have also applied to the department to have the toilets listed as a ‘stand-alone’ heritage place or ‘significant feature’ on the State Heritage Register. The council subsequently withdrew its demolition application until the RANGE heritage listing application is decided. After the public submissions close this Monday, the department
will make a recommendation on the State Heritage listing of the toilets to the independent Queensland Heritage Council which will have the final say, expected at its meeting on Thursday 24 August. Officers from Environment and Heritage Protection inspected the toilets in mid-July. Many in the community have voiced their disapproval of the proposed demolition, pointing out the toilets are well-used, including by visitors to the Rose City. And even though at face value it’s a brick dunny block, the toilets’ wider heritage significance has also been highlighted. The Town Hall toilets are adjacent to Dornbusch Lane, which provides access from the Town Hall car park through to Palmerin Street. The lane is named in honour of Conrad Dornbusch, one half of the architectural firm Dornbusch and Connolly, who as well as the toilets designed some of Warwick’s other fine buildings and landmarks, including St Mary’s Catholic Church, the Warwick General Cemetery, the Criterion Hotel and some notable

From front page “It’s effectively extortion - it’s beyond the capacity of many people to pay, and many of those people have been undertaking pest control on their properties for many years.” Other producers have pointed out to the Free Times that one of the most common pest plant species, African boxthorn, is primarily spread by birds, with seeds only becoming viable after excretion. “What are we supposed to do - shoot all the birds as well?” was one comment. The council recently advertised two new staffing positions for administration of the Invasive Pest Control Scheme, with the council’s manager of Environmental Services, Tim O’Brien, telling the Free Times this week that “recruitment is underway for these positions”. “The Control Works forms are being issued with the 2017-'18 rates notices and completed forms are due back to council by 18 August 2017,” Mr O’Brien said. “Where applicable, a reminder letter will be sent, giving ratepayers a further 30 days to submit the forms. Fines will not be issued in relation to this scheme. Rather, where Control Works forms are not submitted or are submitted but the control works are not done, then a supplementary rates notice will be issued towards the end of the financial year. “The supplementary rates notice will be to the value of the concession that was applied in the current rates notice. The minimal special charge is $500. However, if you have a high valued property as per the general rates then this special charge may be higher than the minimal amount based on the rate in the dollar amount per category. The Invasive Pest Control Scheme (IPCS) special charge is shown on the current rates notice, as well as a corresponding concession for the same amount. “If a ratepayer does not submit a completed Control Works form within the timeframes noted, the concession will be removed and they will be issued with a Supplementary Rates Notice towards the end of the financial year for the IPCS special charge amount - and this amount will either be the minimal special charge or the higher special charge - as was indicated on the current rates notice.” The council this week has called for Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for a Weed and Pest Control Contractors List, which Mayor Tracy Dobie said would assist landowners to comply with the scheme. No movement on Saleyards – yet Expressions of interest for the leasing out of the Warwick Saleyards closed on Friday 14 July, with many producers concerned that an external private operator could jack up livestock selling fees and drive sellers and buyers to online sales, which are rising in popularity. Concern has also been continuing to mount over suggestions raised at the December meeting of the council’s Saleyards Advisory Committee that the existing facility be demolished and a new one built on land off Kenilworth Street owned by Frasers Livestock Transport and adjacent to their depot. A council spokeswoman told the Free Times this week council is “currently progressing through the expression of interest process and no details are available on the timeframe at this stage”. The Free Times has submitted a Right To Information (RTI) request to the Southern Downs Regional Council seeking access to minutes of confidential meetings of the Saleyards Advisory Committee earlier this year. The RTI request is due to be finalised tomorrow, Friday 28 July. The public meeting open to rural producers and other interested landowners from Warwick and Stanthorpe will be held at 11am on Thursday 10 August, at the Freestone Memorial Hall on Freestone Road. In brief Councillor scrutiny The Palaszczuk Government will introduce an Independent Assessor to consider all complaints against councillors, in a further move to reform local government. The new measure is one of 50 recommendations to be adopted, supported in-part or supported in principle from the Councillor Complaints Review, conducted by an independent three-person panel earlier this year. It follows the commencement last week of game-changing electoral donation laws that require candidates for local government to declare electoral donations within seven days. Minister for Local Government and Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Mark Furner - who tabled the report and government response at a Budget Estimates Hearing tonight - said the proposed changes were aimed at ensuring public confidence in the councillor complaints system.

A council statement says the upgrade of the Broadwater facility is one of many projects that were identified in Southern Downs Regional Council’s Waste Reduction and Recycling Plan 2016-2026 and portfolio councillor for waste management Cameron Gow said the upgrades would offer several benefits, including less vandalism and illegal dumping. “The upgrades will allow for increased recycling opportunities as there will be better access to recycling bins as well as a stock pile area for scrap metal. A bulky bin will also be provided specifically for disposal of large items such as furniture and mattresses." The new hours of operation are 8am to 5pm from Friday to Monday - closed on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. For details about the upgrade, call on 1300 MY SDRC (1300 697 372).

Storm the office The SDRC has provided ratepayers with rates notices for 2017, and they should be more wellstaffed for the unwilling to storm their office, loaded with cash or cards ready to keep ownership of their precious properties. Not for any other reason would anyone such as this writer invade their space at 8am. Oh dear, the only staff member present was already engaged. The queue therefore was this very little important person and this mangy ratepayer. The very important person ordered me to remove myself from the queue and wait elsewhere, lest I spy upon his very important business. Well I have been called a few things in my time but a spy was surprising since all things council does are ratepayers’ business, are they not? I did vent somewhat as the very important person exited to allow a mangy ratepayer to pay up! Are these people for real? It is no wonder that Australia is screaming out for change. The council staffer was most remiss in allowing such rudeness to begin her day! Melba Morris, Allora.
Save the saleyards This letter is in response to several phone calls I have had following the publication of my letter in the Free Times last week. All stated that they held the same opinion and expressed support for the points raised in all of the letters and articles printed in the Free Times relating to the municipal saleyards. All said they wished to help if possible - most supposed that it would be too late because the CEO and mayor would have made a decision to accept a proposal relating to leasing the municipal saleyards. I informed all that no matter what they thought, the CEO could only advise the councillors and that it was not for him or the mayor to make a decision on the matter. The proposal should only be put to a full council meeting, not a committee or one or two persons. The CEO is not a councillor and while he may express his opinion, he will not be voting one way or another. A decision can only be made by all councillors. Such an important decision must be made by a full council not a part-council. I know that some of the first-time councillors may feel overpowered by others, but each coun-
cillor must vote on proposals put before council in the interests of the community that gave them the privilege to represent them (the voters). It doesn’t matter whether you are the mayor, a councillor with years of experience or a first-timer, you must vote according to the wishes of your constituents and the overall good. This may be different to your own feelings about the proposals before you. I advise all who have taken an interest in my lobbying to make the effort and call or email all of the councillors and make your feelings known in a cordial manner. It is not too late, but I urge you to do so now - don’t leave it to someone else. Numbers do count: if only two or three people are vocal in their opposition the depth of concern cannot be gauged and will not be taken seriously. Dobie, Tracy 0413 741 602, tracy.dobie@ sdrc.qld.gov.au; Gow, Cameron 0427 752 275, cameron.gow@sdrc.qld.gov.au; Kelly, Rod 0427 224 280, rod.kelly@sdrc.qld. gov.au; McNally, Jo 0408 819 983, jo.mcnally@ sdrc.qld.gov.au; McNichol, Marika 0418 674 226, marika.mcnichol@sdrc.qld.gov.au; Meiklejohn, Neil 0419 674 182, neil.meiklejohn@sdrc. qld.gov.au; Pennisi, Vic 0412 909 882, vic.pennisi@sdrc. qld, gov.au; Stocks, Yve 0417 620 648, yve.stocks@sdrc. qld.gov.au; Windle, Sheryl 0417 611 934, sheryl.windle@ sdrc.qld.gov.au. Any councillor can be contacted via the council, PO Box 26, Warwick, Qld, 4370. If council feels that it is not able to make some management decisions regarding the running of the municipal saleyards it could always resort to the help of consultants as it seems to be doing on a lot of other council decisions. The council should keep in mind that 100 per cent of the returns from the municipal saleyards operation is a much better proposition than a 60 -40 per cent split. Noel McConville, Swan Creek.
Over charge In my daily business, I have contact with many folk, especially landholders, in our shire. Their reaction to the most recent rates notice, is, at the very least, negative. Many are furious at the utter waste of money,
and the refusal by the mayor, councillors and administrative bureaucrats to acknowledge the waste of public monies by our servants and elected representatives. Others are just sick to the stomach at the huge costs forced upon them. But to a man, they do not believe the current rates are justifiable. The new "charge" for vermin and noxious weeds has raised ire. To quote, "They take our bloody guns then want to fine us for vermin. What are we supposed to do? Run after them with a bloody stick?" Fair question. Another comment was "How about the council cleans up its own roads first - they are swarming with pear and boxthorn, infecting our places - bugger them and their $500". Of course, the insulated bureaucracy and councillors would not accept facts like these. Nevertheless, there is major dis-satisfaction in our community of ratepayers over the excessive increases and proposed penalties. Council, beware. Dick Howard, Swan Creek.

The ATO considers a reasonable deduction for work-related laundry claims is $1 per load if it’s only work-related clothing and 50c if it’s a mixture. For home office expenses, the ATO allows a fixed rate of 45c per hour for those working from home or they can keep a diary of the actual costs. Etax.com.au senior tax manager Liz Russell said common items might be claimed without a receipt: * Membership or union fees that could be itemised on a PAYG summary; * Fuel and petrol usage as long as the number of work-related kilometres travelled can be demonstrated; * Computer items there is a credit card statement showing the purchase and perhaps a photo of the packaging; * Stationery items if there is a credit card statement and a note next to the purchase record. Ms Russell said bank statements and Bpay statements would also usually be accepted by the ATO when making deductions. “The expense must be allowable. This means you must actually be eligible to claim it based on your occupation and you haven’t already been reimbursed by your employer,” she said. “If a purchase contains some items you’re allowed to claim and some that you can’t, having some sort of way to distinguish between the two is a must.”

Many Aussies are thinking about collecting receipts and other records to help them get a handy refund. Receipts are the easiest way to satisfy the Australian Taxation Office that a deduction is real, but there are some deductions where receipts are unnecessary or impossible to get. The ATO understands this but tax payers do need to prove how they calculated all their deductions, usually with some form of written evidence or bank statements. Home office usage, work-related car expenses and uniform costs are among the deductions that don’t always require receipts. People can claim work-related deductions totalling up to $300 without receipts, but Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said some taxpayers incorrectly believed they could make this standard $300 claim even if they didn’t spend it. “You must have actually spent the money, and be able to show us how you worked out your deduction if asked,” she said. “We are watching out for those standard deductions because it’s coming through as a theme in a lot of our audits. When we ask them about it they don’t have the ability to back it up. “It’s about having a record of your calculations.” This did not mean that your work-related uniform deductions required a list of every single wash, but you would need to show a reasonable calculation to justify your claim, Ms Anderson said.

“Things are different out here in the country”. This used to be a saying that would attract a nod of agreement and a smile. Now, it seems to imply that those who don’t live in a city are somehow behind the times. The reality is things are different out here. Despite the introduction of new technologies and innovations, people still face challenges that those in the city do not. Not the least of which is trying to make large suppliers and government departments understand that Tenterfield is not an outer Sydney suburb and you don’t have internet or even phone access when you are mustering the back paddock. Running a successful rural business means being able to maximise the use of technology and innovation without losing the personal service required in a small community. LG Tax & Accounting Solutions offers clients access to the latest technology solutions including cloud accounting packages, business management tools and online communications while still being able to talk to you about cattle prices or the impact of local road works. Homes&Property Real Estate Guide
SO, YOU'RE READY TO BUY REAL ESTATE Buying your first property is a big step, but an exciting step. Your friends are talking about mortgages and interest rates and your input about the weekly rent doesn’t seem to be adding much to the conversation. You’ve decided it’s time to buy some property. But the last story you heard was a horror story about a friend of a friend who got carried away at auction and ended up spending more than they could comfortably afford. That same barbecue yielded a story about a friend who missed out on her dream home because she didn’t believe the agent who told her there were multiple offers on the table. She’s still mourning the loss of that home. So you want to buy a property, but don’t know where to start. Luckily, we have some helpful advice! Here are some simple tips that
will help your property search be a success. • Be prepared: Work out your budget by deciding what weekly repayments you can commit to. Remember to factor in council rates and insurance premiums. Now you can work out what purchase price you can afford and how much deposit you will need to save to satisfy the bank’s requirements. Talk to a few lending institutions and understand your budget better. Be flexible with what you hope to buy. If your budget doesn’t extend to your dream mansion in Clayfield or Teneriffe, perhaps consider an apartment or a smaller property in Brisbane’s very affordable middle ring. The important thing is to get your foot on the property ladder and work up from there. Very few people
buy their dream home as their first property purchase. • Get an expert guide: A good mortgage broker can be worth their weight in gold. So can a buyer’s agent. These experts can help you navigate the process. A mortgage broker can help you with financial and budget issues and the buyer’s agent can help with the search, with the trickier parts of finding a suburb that suits all your needs and things like finding any development applications that have been lodged that may impact the potential purchase. • Research: Look at lots of properties in the sold section of all the property portals, read real estate advice columns and arm yourself with as much knowledge about the market as possible. The REIQ publishes quarterly data on the real estate
market in the Queensland Market Monitor report (see REIQ.com for more). Learn about median house prices and what suburbs are on the way up. Those areas where there is good capital growth that are affordable are the areas you are looking for. Have a checklist of needs - commute to work, to schools, to shops - are the big three that most people start with. Visit the area during peak hours of 8am and 5pm, visit during school pick-up and drop-off time. Then visit as many open homes in your targeted suburbs to help you understand the market and what is a fair price and - most importantly - what is not. You will be amazed at how quickly you develop your knowledge and become very well informed. • Talk to local agents: Tap into
their knowledge and contacts as well. Sometimes we avoid the salesperson because we don’t want to be subject to a sales pitch, however, good career-minded agents are always willing to share their knowledge and assist you in the buying process. • Don’t be afraid: Once you have found the right property get the opinion of close and trusted advisors - friends and family may want to visit the property and offer their thoughts. Tap into the experience of those you trust, those who have bought property and have meaningful help to offer. Then, at some point, you will have to make that decision to buy. If you have formed a connection with a property, unless a trusted advisor has a material reason for not buying it, then trust your gut and go for it. Good luck.

Orchid exposure Garden Time with Beatrice Hawkins I was recently given a beautiful red/brown cymbidium orchid as a birthday gift. Now, I love these and all the many other forms of orchids, but am not an orchid grower by any estimation. I have only ever tried once before in a climate that was anything but suitable with the result that, not unexpectedly, it died! That was over 35 years ago, and I haven’t succumbed to the temptation to try again until my friend arrived with the beautiful specimen for me. Each year, I drool at the displays for sale in nurseries and chain stores but, knowing my limitations, I have successfully resisted. Now that I have this beauty in my lounge room, I will have to learn how to care for it. I really think it needs a friend to keep it company, so will be looking for one among the display at the extravaganza. I am lucky this time as the climate is more conducive to their care, and also I am pleased to know some members of the Horticultural Society who grow a wonderful array of many types and hopefully will be able to give me some tips on what to do. Last year, I went to the Boonah orchid show and was entranced by the variety of types, the colours and the perfume. It was a great day out, and I will definitely keep an eye out for a repeat performance. Apparently a common name for cymbidiums, although I personally have never heard it, is “boat orchid” because of their shape! The name is derived from the Latin “cymba” meaning boat, and was first used to describe them in 1815. There is evidence from the time of Confucius in 500 BC that they were grown in China over 2500 years ago. They are the most popular orchid grown in
Australia and can be grown easily in all of the capital cities and coastal areas and inland so long as they are protected from frosts. They originally come from Northern India, South East Asia and Northern Australia. They require at least 50 per cent light, so will not do well under dense shade but the filtered light of gum tress is ideal. They will not flower if they are not getting enough light, but can’t have direct sunlight as this will burn their leaves. The experts assure me that they are easy to look after. I am not entirely convinced! I hope some of the readers have been able to come to the Extravaganza and talk to our experts if you had any questions. I will certainly be seeking advice! At present in my garden I am still picking little pear shaped yellow tomatoes and some red ones as well. The rainbow chard and spinach is continuing and the broccolini is going well. Once you’ve eaten home grown broccoli, it is extremely hard to go back to the commercially produced product from the supermarket. The taste difference is like chalk and cheese! My first lot of snow peas have petered out,

but the lovely deep purple ones are coming on well. They look so decorative in the garden with the pink and purple flowers and purple pods. The broad beans are also doing well, but I must admit I really only grow them for effect. I am not a huge fan of the beans themselves although I do have one recipe in which they are needed. They require cooking and peeling though, and this is very tedious so this dish is not on the menu often. Another item that I am very pleased with in the garden is the passion fruit vines. I am pleased to report that the Panama Gold has ripe fruit on it and the Nelly Kelly has been flowering and set fruit also. I’m delighted!! When the frosts take up I have some chokoes ready to go in. ABC gardening presenter Jerry Colby Williams has said that all vegetable gardens should include a choko vine. In his words as an Englishman, “They are the Heathrow airport of the garden”! Apparently, they are very attractive to beneficial insects and will help to attract them to our gardens and keep many of the harmful ones at bay. They are a nostalgic inclusion for me as, in my childhood, every suburban garden included one, usually helping to disguise the outside toilet in the back yard!! I can’t say they are a favourite vegetable of mine either, but they are prolific once you get them established and a useful cover for fences and garden sheds. Picked when they are very small, steamed and served with a drizzle of butter, is by far my favourite way of eating them. As a child they were usually left until they were quite large, were a pain to peel, ending up with the sticky residue on your hands, and then boiled and served in a curry or herb sauce or just plain boiled. How our eating habits have changed in the last 50 years! The next big thing on the Horticultural Society Calendar of events is the Spring Garden Competition and Spring Flower Show in October. Keep working on your gardens and I hope we have as many or more entries than last year’s record.
You may find friends to be a little argumentative. Do your best to remain objective. A loved one is more willing to co-operate in a joint venture. Academic advancement is highlighted. TAURUS—April 21-May 22 You can boost your partner’s sagging confidence and encourage children to realize their potential. An interesting financial option could require further research before you make a definite decision. GEMINI—May 23-June 21 A trusted friend may help you out of a rut. You begin to feel more ambitious this week, but work accordingly to a plan. Romance accents its whimsical side. CANCER—June 22-July 22 Careerwise, you may find that a more traditional approach appeals to your superiors. Don’t be experimental just to be different. Some good financial news may arrive this week. LEO—July 23-August 22 A dull job suddenly becomes much more interesting. Your social life is livelier too. A friend may become suddenly possessive - try to nip the problem in the bud. VIRGO—August 23-September 22 This is an excellent week for presenting your proposals. Your instincts are sharp, especially in domestic matters. A happy romantic trend continues through the week and at the end of the week a recent mystery is solved. LIBRA—September 23-October 22 Your charisma helps you avoid some tricky situations this week, at home or at work - but don’t count on it exclusively. You are very popular at present and you receive a series of invitations SCORPIO—October 23-November 21 Hunches are generally strong, especally those related to career prospects. Overseas corresponence encourages you to shape your own travel plans. A research project brings some surprises. SAGITTARIUS—November 22-December 22 Tackling large jobs is your current strength. The simple tasks may present unexpected problems. This is a good time for getting in touch with friends who have drifted away. CAPRICORN—December 23-January 20 Your energy level is generally high, but avoid over extending yourself. You can be somewhat gullible so don’t believe every strange tale you hear right now. An award bonus may arrive by the end of the week. AQUARIUS—January 21-February 19 Careful planning may help you avoid a financial snag. Watch a tendency to take risks - you are in an adventurous mood. Your creative energies are high and your efforts could win you high praise. PISCES—February 20-March 20 Transportation and communication problems are starting to end. Your independent streak is surfacing, but try to include your partner in your plans. You have a knack of excluding those who could could be the most helpful. Uphold rules of game call The
spin With Casey O’Connor email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com
The late and high shot that felled Billy Slater and the fallout from the “no send-off“ that followed has dominated sporting headlines and commentary this week. Former players and referees and wiser men than I have all had their say. Almost to a person they are calling for an improved performance from the men with the whistle who seem to have lost the courage of their convictions. What has become more and more apparent is that former players, referees and fans would like to see a return to the days where referees actually refereed the rules of the game as they are written. A return to the time when the man with the whistle was the preeminent decision maker not those in the bunker. Surely that is why they have that whistle. Begs the question is Tony Archer’s position on shaky ground following this latest brouhaha. Quote of the week I thought came from one of the quickest wits in sport and commentary, Kerry “Skull” O’Keefe who quipped-“The best thing to come out of the bunker all week was Jordan Spieth”. Funny and true after Spieth’s miraculous recovery to win the British Open. While “that hit” has been the centre of attention, there have been a couple of other spectacular events including the Spieth’s win. Tour de France winner, Brit, Chris Froome, claimed his fourth win in the iconic event, however, it was the English women’s cricket team stealing the headlines after their upset win at the World Cup final at Lords which is being dubbed a major milestone in women’s cricket. Australian cycling enthusiasts and lovers of the Tour de France finally had something to cheer about as Michael Matthews took the Green Sprinters Jersey hopefully inspiring another golden age of Aussie Sprinters. And the cricket fiasco well that just rolls on with the two warring parties still unable to reach a compromise. Starting to become ridiculous now children. The broadcasters, the sponsors and even the pollies are starting to make noises. And let’s not forget the fans - in particular - this fan who is anxiously sitting on tickets to Brisbane and Adelaide and hoping to be looking at something more than churches in Adelaide. Sort it gentlemen. - Casey WINNING ROUND FOR MAGUERI A field of 40 keen golfers took to the course on Saturday morning in the Stanthorpe Plaza Meats Single Stroke competition last Saturday. While some players found the course quite challenging, the winner of the Men’s competition Angelo Maugeri had very few problems. Maugeri carded a stunning 69 in his winning round. Hot on Maugeri’s heels was runner-up Graman Tonkin. Neta Thouard won the Ladies competition with a nett 75 after a very good back nine. Runner-up in the Ladies contest was Nikki Rossow who outscored Madeline Jarman on a countback. This week, the club is hosting the popular Club President’s Day. A 4BBB Medley Stableford competition so get your playing partners together for the shotgun start at 11.45am. There is a timesheet on the notice board for this event. Warwick Golf Pro Sam Eaves is bringing his mobile pro shop to the club this Saturday. If you are chasing any special items or would like to book some coaching lessons, contact Sam on 4661 3664. DOWN TO BUSINESS IN NRL We are down to the business end of the NRL fixtures and the result of every game now counts for teams and tipsters. Round 20 saw most games go to script, however the biggest upset was the performance of Manly against the Dragons. That had plenty of tipsters and experts scratching their heads while the coaching careers of a few NRL big names ap-
pear to be on the line if the rumour mill is to be believed. This week Bulldogs fans will be hoping it is not another repeat performance of their team unravelling as they take on the Panthers at Pepper Stadium. Hard to go against the Panthers who accounted for the Titans in a close encounter last outing. It seems apparent that there is much unrest in the Doggies kennel. Friday night the Broncos and Eels go head to head at ANZ. The Broncos will be looking to grab another two points here but will not be able to take the foot off the accelerator against the unpredictable Eels. Boyd is almost assured to take his place and will be a key “in” for the Brisbane in what should be a great game. The Sharks head across the ditch to Mt Smart Stadium and should come away with the points. Hard to have the Warriors without Shaun Johnson in the side. The Dragons upset the Eagles last round and are expected to account for the Knights if they keep their mind on the job at hand. The clash between the Roosters and Cowboys is shaping as one of the clashes of the round. The Cowboys have been in good form and have found a new confidence without JT. The Roosters are still dabbling with premiership favouritism behind Melbourne and although it has created friction in the household, I am leaning towards the Roosters. Ricky’s Raiders should surely account for the hapless Bunnies in the remaining Saturday game. The Raiders will be without suspended Sia Soliola while big Sam Burgess is a key out for the Bunnies. A win here might put a smile back on Ricky’s face. On Sunday, Melbourne should bank another tradesman like win over the Sea Eagles despite Billy Slater being unavailable apparently still seeing stars as a result of “that hit”. Manly have plenty of questions to answer after being thrashed by the Dragons, and must surely play better here - doubt even their best would be good enough, however. The round comes to a close with the Titans and Tigers in action at CBUS. The Tigers performed much better against the Eels last week with several players stepping up to answer their critics, however I favour the Titans at home. BUSY WEEK ON THE TANNY GREENS Tannymorel Bowlers have been kept on the ball with a busy schedule in the past week. There was a great turn out for the Monthly Triples competition at Tannymorel Bowls club on Thursday. It was a great day with the greens playing very well and an afternoon of very close competition for the most part. The boys from Southern Cross, Prickles, Geoff Davies and Clarke (Paint Brush) Davidson finished with bragging rights - winners on the day. They had a 14-9 win over Marg Martin Yvonne Campbell and Wendy Nerney. Local lads Matt Shepherd Pete Gynther and Mick O’Leary had to settle for the runners-up spot after a win over the Summit visitors. In other results, P. Supelt, Gene Rapp and Ed Welsh played well defeating Julie and Al Buse and Fran Clam 19-9. In a close game, Di Welsh Sue Butz and playing partner Geoff Creighton had a two point win over Barb Cross, Gazza Penn and Greg Cross. Final score 12-10. Summit visitors Ray Spiller Phil Davis and Zel Zamprogno also had a 12-10 win over Brian Walsh Gary Famer and Myrtle Wagner. Tom Senniger, Phil Wagner and Max Holder also had a win over Gordie Assay Les Clarke and TB - scores 13-7. In the second round (Skip’s only), winners were Zel Zamprogno, Ron P, Greg Cross, Wendy Nerney, Mick O’Leary, Ed Welsh and Di Welsh. Clarke Davidson set up a win for his partners with a 20-3 win over Myrtle Wagner. Round four of the Tanny Classic was decided on Saturday after a great afternoon of quality play. At the end of the round, Pedro Collis leads the field on 17 points but he is just one point ahead of Matty shepherd. Mick O’Leary and Don Clouten are sitting on 12 points. Sue Butz Lyn Coleman and Allen Buse each share 11 points and behind them is a flock of hopefuls on 10 points.
Inglewood players Brent Hearne and Brent Osborne returned to their Inglewood team for a winning performance against the Killarney Cutters after their game with the Qld Outback side. Members of the Queensland Outback side are pictured with the United NQ side they played at Barlow Park in Cairns recently..
The Tenterfield Tigers played in commemorative jerseys on Saturday to honour former patron the late Aub Gillespie. The jerseys were auctioned after the Tigers win over the Gremlins raising $4000 for the junior and senior Tigers. Looks like this Tanny Classic will go right down to the wire. Last week’s results saw a win for Levi Rabbit Matty Shepherd and Thommo. Plenty of chatter to say Thommo was fortunate to have two such outstanding partners because he was hopeless. The trio had a 25-8 win over Joel Farmer Di Walsh and Mick O’Leary. The afternoon’s runners-up were Lyn Coleman Sue Butz and Peter Collis. Julie Buse Geoff Farmer and Koala grabbed a win in a close game against Quinton Colem Gazza Penn and Darren Rabbitt. Ash Coleman Brian Walsh and TB also had a good win over Allen Buse Don Clouten and Pete Gynther (16-8). Good to see junior bowlers, Levi Mason and Joel playing in the Tanny classic and showing how it is done. Next round of the Classic this Saturday. SHOOTERS ENJOY XMAS IN JULY You should not really expect much more than cold conditions for a Xmas in July Shoot and the weather did not let members of the Inglewood Sporting Shooters down. A good roll up of keen shooters defied the cold conditions for the shoot last Sunday. Stephanie Dudgeon was too strong in Stage One - Handgun. Stephanie outscored Monika While and Ray Dudgeon. In Stage Two the Rifle shoot Ray dudgeon came to the fore with a win over Richard While and Glenn Small. The winning team was decided after a lucky draw and honours went to Stephanie Dudgeon and Monika White. Congratulations to all the competitors. It was a tough but enjoyable day of competition. The competition was followed by the club’s
AGM and members are looking forward to big things in the coming year - watch this space. The new club year gets underway this week with a scheduled working bee and lunch. Bring your enthusiasm, lunch and don’t forget to include a hand gun to take on some targets after the work stuff is done and dusted. GOOD PERFORMANCES DESPITE COLD CONDITIONS A group of eight players braved very cold conditions to play golf croquet last week. The conditions were no deterrent to Dianne Wren who had an excellent performance in both the games played. Wren top scored in both games, scoring 10 hoops in game one and seven in game two. She and playing partner Elaine Brown had a 13 -8 win over opponents Shirley Page and Sharyn Roser in the early game. In the second game, Wren partnered with Liz Ellway for a 13-8 win over Marian Castles and Shirley Page. Justin Liddy also played well, nailing seven hoops in each of his games. Liddy and Judy Lock had a 13-8 win over Marian Castles and Liz Ellway. After the break, Liddy and Sharyn Roser teamed for a 12-7 win over Judy Lock and Elaine Brown. Sharyn Roser was another player in good form, scoring six hoops in game one. Her performance included a hoop in one and a score of seven in her second game. TRL RUN TO THE FINALS HEATS UP The run to the TRL finals heats up this weekend with the Cowboys and Wattles both coming off last round byes. After last weekend Valleys have shot to favouritism for the 2017 premiership after a comprehensive win over Souths. Pittsworth gave their chances a boost with a timely return to form, defeating the Oakey Breas. Highfields cemented their spot in the top four with a tight win over Dalby.

Winning is a family feeling for archers Remy and Tabitha Leonard. The Woodenbong pair proudly display their medal tally from the recent National Youth Archery Championships. Wattles are currently sitting on16 points along with Gatton and the Cowboys and Pittsworth level pegging on 14 points. It is do-or-die time for the two Southern Downs sides with just two rounds remaining. In must-win situations, the Cowboys have a big task ahead when they take on Valleys. Things do not get much easier for Wattles who will travel to Highfields. FROST NOT AN ISSUE There was still a little frost on the ground when gateball players hit the court on Friday morning, but it did not faze the playing group. The Red team played with three players (Heather Widderick, Andrea Denkewitz (captain) and Sharyn Roser) while White fielded a team of four (Grace Howard, Margaret Dickenson, John Draper and Jenny Tunbridge) because of the uneven numbers. Game One went the way of the White team with a 13-7 scoreline. The Red team had a better performance in game two, but went down 12-10. John Draper played some good shots to the line in this game to help his team to the win. Games after the break were very close. The Red team had a 9-8 win in game three, and the final game finished in an 11-all draw. The honours eventually went to the Red team in this game, winning on a countback. They had one more three point score than their opponents. On Saturday afternoon after a short working bee, Sharyn Roser, Andrea Denkewitz and Margaret Dickenson played three games. In game one, Andrea played White against Sharyn and Margaret (Red). Red had a runaway win19-10 win. In the second game, Sharyn Roser took the White balls against Andrea Denkewitz and Margaret Dickenson and played very well. Red had early control of the game however Roser hit a great long shot to pass the second gate and went on to spark the Red balls off the court went on to a 12-9 win. In the final match of the afternoon, Margaret Dickenson played the White against her opposition. Dickenson gained early control of the game and went on to win, 13 - 8, scoring two agari’s (worth five points each) on her way to the victory. TIGERS CELEBRATE AUB’S DAY WITH WIN
The Tenterfield Tigers continue to cling to their one-point lead at the head of the BRL Ladder after a comprehensive 58-12 win over Stanthorpe last weekend. In the first of the BRL’s double header round, a big crowd turned out at Rugby League Park in chilly conditions to support the home side and help celebrate the Tigers annual Aub’s Day. The result went to script as an improved defensive effort from the Tigers kept the Visiting Gremlins scoreless for the entire first half of the game. The Tigers looked spar and only a couple of lapses late in the second half allowed the Gremlins the opportunity to score. It was a good team effort and solid work by the forwards created plenty of room for the Tiger’s backline which looked slick. The Tigers crossed for 11 tries with Faron Anderson having a day out scoring four. Mal Whightman grabbed a double while Adam Clothier (Player of the match) Jac Wilson Bruce Binge, Wayne Brown and Alex McGrady all got across the try line. Captain coach Brendan Minns who returned to the paddock after a couple of weeks out with injury landed seven conversions in what was an emphatic win. SHOOTING FOR THE STARS Following his overseas success earlier in the year, teenage archer Remy Leonard and his sister Tabitha recently competed in the v Championships. The multi-day event was held in Morwell outside Melbourne. Remy picked up silver medals in the opening event the Clout followed by the Field Shoot. The Clout is shot over a longer distance than usual. The target a series of pegs laid out on the ground. The Field Shoot sees the archers traipsing through the bush shooting at a number of different-sized circular targets. He collected a gold medal in his division for the next discipline the Target Event while his sister Tabitha placed third in her division. The final event in the NYAC was a Short Range event. 50m for Remy’s division and 30m for Tabitha’s group. Remy collected his second gold for the week in this event. Not to be outdone, his sister also had a good day. Against some stiff opposition, she tied for first position and after a countback
was declared the winner. Double gold for the siblings a great result to wrap up the Youth championships. Remy went on to shoot in the Team Match play, placing fourth and in the Individual Match play missed out on the gold medal by just five points, but was happy to be taking home another silver medal in a successful week of competition. In late June, Leonard and three other Australian archers competed in the third stage of the Hyundai Archery World Cup. These are open events which means there are no youth divisions so the Woodenbong youngster was shooting against some of the world’s best male compound shooters, including world number one Stephan Hansen. Remy Leonard was the youngest competitor in the men’s open compound division. In the ranking round, Remy ranked 54 on the day. In Day two matches, he won his first match defeating young Canadian archer, Tristan Moran, before heading into Round two against Frenchman, Fabien Delobelle, (ranked 11). Leonard pushed the older and more experienced archer all the way, and in the end was beaten by only three points. The result ended his advancement in the individual competition, but the team’s event was still to come. Going into the team competition the Australian trio were ranked 14 and in their first outing, and were pitted against the team from Denmark who were ranked No 3. World No 1 Stephen Hansen was a member of the team. In somewhat of an upset, the Australians defeated Denmark to secure a quarter final match against El Salvador. In a very tight contest which led to a one-arrow shoot off, El Salvador tipped out the Aussies. It was a remarkable opportunity for this young man from Woodenbong who shows extraordinary talent. While it exposed Remy Leonard to a new level of competition - it also revealed his skill and dedication to others on the world stage. The youngster would like to thank his parents and family and anyone who has helped him continue his world archery dreams. Remy has a GoFundMe page for those wishing to help. Any assistance is always very much appreciated. You can follow Remy on Facebook and Instagram. He has a bright future. ROSEY FINISH FOR TERRY Another dedicated group of Sunday Sporters braved some icey conditions to hit the course in Stanthorpe on Sunday morning. Terry Roser came out on top with a winning performance. Ray Thorn finished runner-up, while the run downs went to Bob Watts and Terry Byrnes. The Best gross score of the day was carded by Wayne Little. Stuart Rayner snapped up the pin shot at the third and Ian Anderson picked up the pro pin. Angelo Maugeri fresh from a win in Saturday’s club competition snuck home with a meat tray. The other tray left the building in the company of Terry Byrnes. If you are keen to see what a frosty Sunday morning looks like on the Stanthorpe Golf Course you can join the Sporter’s crew for tee off on Sunday between 8am and 8.30am. MORE THAN JUST A WIN The Redbacks had plenty to play for last weekend and notched up a decisive 17.15 (117) to 6.5 (41) victory over the Dalby Swans. The win sees the Redbacks sitting at the head of the leader board ahead of the second-placed Swans with only a few fixture rounds remaining. The win should provide the Warwick side with plenty of confidence heading into the finals.
However, Saturday’s game was about much more than just competition points - it was a millstone game for one of the Redbacks favourites, Shane Walker who played game no 50 for the club. No mean achievement for this young man who has mild cerebral palsy. In another great achievement, Walker has been named to represent Queensland in the Inclusion Games on the Gold coast which commenced on Monday. Teams from across Australia are currently competing in the 2017 AFL National Inclusion Carnival which commenced on Monday. The carnival brings together footballers with an intellectual disability from across the country to take part in a round-robin carnival between teams from Northern Territory, NSW/ACT, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria Country, Victoria Metro, and Western Australia. Participants will also undergo education sessions with the Gold Coast SUNS, deliver football clinics to students at Special Schools and attend an AFL match at Metricon Stadium. The finals will be played on Saturday 29 July at Ord Minnett Oval in Broadbeach. LOCAL LEAGUES GET BEHIND “RIZEUP” This weekend junior and senior rugby league clubs across the Warwick and District and Border Rugby League will join the fight against domestic violence when they get behind the charity “Rizeup.” This will be the second year that the QRL Central Division, Local Leagues and Clubs have supported the charity which is committed to breaking the cycle of domestic violence. QRL Operations manager, Michael Jensen, is helping to co-ordinate the round. He said: “The Rizeup Charity provides real practical assistance to victims of domestic violence by helping to furnish and fill a home with basic essential items that families need when moving into a bare home.” Clubs are seeking support from the general community, and are looking for donations of laundry items, including all the basics from pegs and peg baskets to sponges mops buckets, and general cleaning utensils and products. All manner of kitchen items from Microwaves to through to cutlery, crockery and anything in between would be greatly appreciated. If you can help by donating any of the above-mentioned items, drop off items to your local Warwick and District Junior Rugby League Club or Border Rugby League Club this week or on game day this Saturday 29 July 2017. Items can be left at any of the game day venues this weekend including:-Eastern Suburbs Junior Rugby League, St Marks Oval, Warwick; Collegians Junior Rugby League, St Marks Oval, Warwick; Wattles Junior Rugby League, Platz Oval, Clifton or Sullivan Oval in Stanthorpe. Alternatively, any local junior or senior rugby league club in the region will arrange to collect donations if you are unable to deliver them to a venue this Saturday. Further information is available by contacting Michael Jensen (mobile) 0439 735 865 or email m.jensen@qrl.com.au

Next Sunday 30 July the club will be holding a 'fly’ shoot at the 300 yard mound, followed by a barbecue. If you feel like a challenge, come along and try to hit a tiny fly target at 300 yards. Sign on at 8.30am for 9am start. Call Margaret on 4666 1018 for details, and hope to see you all there and as always shoot safe, shoot straight.
