A forecast jobs boom at Port of Geelong faces a growth squeeze from unrelated businesses taking over land next door. The port could create more than 3000 jobs within 20 years on the back of a 50 per cent surge in trade, GeelongPort chief executive Brett Winter announced on Wednesday. But his forecast followed council administrators the night before opening up more space for shops and offices on a former industrial site abutting the port. The planning amendment sets up a clash of land uses as the port eyes growth while losing potential expansion sites to unrelated operators. The forecast trade surge could make the port an industrial success story for the city, Mr Winter said while launching GeelongPort’s new branding and a “renewed strategy”. “By 2035, the Port of Geelong is predicted to handle more than 18 million tonnes of imports and exports, generating 3100 jobs and strengthening its position as a leading employer in the local region,” he said. The port, which handles imports and exports of bulk goods such as oil, grain and woodchips, has recorded booming trade over the past few years. Significant harvests after the millennium drought have driven much of the increased business. Continued page 5

Sacked councillors ‘face new probes if re-elected’ four bullying incidents, leading to the departure of “several” staff from City Hall. Ms Couzens, Labor’s Geelong MP, said she was unsure how many councillors faced bullying allegations but any investigations would have ceased after they were sacked. “Former sacked councillors can stand at the council election in October this year. However, I’m sure the people of Geelong will cast their vote taking into consideration who the candidates are and their past history,” Ms Couzens said. “It is also worth noting that those past councillors who were under investigation prior to their dismissal will if they win automatically be under investigation again.” Geelong needed “good, strong councillors” to continue the “positive work” of the three administrators the Andrews Government appointed in their place, Ms Couzens said. The new councillors must ensure that Geelong’s ongoing revitalisation achieved the best

outcomes for the city, “something the previous council did not have the ability to do”, she said. “If you look at Geelong right now there are cranes in the sky and many projects underway right across the city. “This is not as a result of the previous council, although some are attempting to claim glory for this. “It is due to the fact they are not in office.” Ms Couzens comments followed Mr Lyons discussing his re-election prospects on 94.7 The Pulse this week. “I never say never to anything. I would say at the moment (that) it’s a real wait-and-see,” he told the station. “My burning passion for the Geelong community is brighter than ever and I have a tremendous amount of unfinished business. “I should be allowed to finish off the journey that I started.”

A “topping out” ceremony has celebrated a new record height for buildings in central Geelong, according to its future tenant. WorkSafe said its $120 million headquarters under construction in Malop St officially reached its final height of 65 metres on the 14th floor this week, with the project scheduled for completion next June.

High school students have helped create two Aboriginal art murals installed as a feature on a corrugated iron wall at Waurn Ponds’ Leisurelink. The group of young Aboriginal students from Grovedale Secondary College designed and created the murals and associated artwork under the guidance of local indigenous artist Nathan Patterson. One mural represented the young people’s view of Geelong, while the other depicted a meeting place with surrounding images representing them, City Hall said. City Hall’s Youth Development team ran two after-school workshops with the students to help them with their artistic creations. The murals were “an important way to encourage young people to connect with their culture”, City Hall’s Fiona Reidy said. “The aim of the workshops was to provide young people with a space to connect with culture and country, have key conversations about culture and identity and to be able to express them through art,” she said.

Any Geelong councillors investigated for alleged bullying before their sacking in April will go straight back under investigation if they return at October’s elections, a state MP has warned. Christine Couzens raised the investigation risk after a series of the sacked councillors declared they would stand again and others refused to rule out another run for council. Former mayor Darryn Lyons was the latest to raise expectations he could nominate, this week declining on local radio to rule out another run for council. Fake ID in $10,000 heist A man has used a fake licence to allegedly steal $10,000 from a bank in Belmont, according to police. But a suspicious staff member seized the driver’s licence to stop him making off with a further $15,000 from an East Geelong bank later the same day. Police investigating the incidents released security camera images of a man initially wearing a trilby hat and a singlet before appearing wearing a darker T-shirt in separate CCTV footage. Planet Ark will run the event as part of its National Tree Day, with the support of City Hall, Barwon Water and Lions club members. Planting activities from 9.30am to 2.30pm would focus in Geelong on Drysdale Rd, Hamlyn Heights, City Hall said. The work would spruce up the road’s section of a 12km Ted Wilson Trail beginning at Lovely Banks. The trail’s namesake, a former police sergeant, was honoured with the trail title for his contribution to cycling through Barwon Regional Bicycle Council and City Hall’s bike strategy. City Hall began The Greenway Project in 2014 to plant more than 60,000 trees and 20,000 shrubs and grasses along the trail by 2018. Land ‘clash’ risk From page 1 Mr Winter expected the “unprecedented growth” over the next two decades to boost confidence in industry, promote investment in infrastructure, and “contribute significantly to the region’s prosperity”. Geelong was already Victoria’s “largest and most important bulk-cargo port”, he said. “The port already handles a quarter of Victoria’s exports, contributing almost $450 million dollars to the state’s economy.” The port was also crucial to helping rural regions ship goods “without having to bear the brunt of costs associated with a capital city port”, Mr Winter said. He touched on the importance of maintaining industrial-zoned sites around the port, saying it “currently” had land available for “growth opportunities”. The previous night Geelong’s council administrators adopted a land-use amendment potentially allowing expansion of “offices and other compatible uses” on the former Federal Mills industrial site at 13-35 Mackey St, North Peter Dorling Geelong. A report to the council noted that the former mills’ heritage values represented “difficulties with using the site for industrial purposes”. Part of the site already has tenants ranging from a cafe and a gym to an adult-products store and offices. City Hall remained “keenly aware of the need to protect the Port of Geelong” while adopting the amended master plan for the mills land, a council statement said. Administrator Peter Dorling called the amendment an “adaptive re-use of a significant heritage place” that would “support the growth of new business and employment”. “The master plan will help to ensure a fair and orderly planning outcome for the Mackey Street site without prejudicing the operation of the Port of Geelong,” he said.

‘It was not a dog - we know what we saw’

MYSTERIOUS: The black 'rivermouth panther', photographed while apparently stalking a pair of dogs at Point Impossible last Saturday in the latest of a series of local big-cat sightings.

Pair snap ‘big, black cat’ on prowl A mysterious big cat has surprised two men fishing at Point Impossible. One of the men supplied the Indy with several pictures of the animal, taken from the other side of Thompsons Creek around 10am last Saturday. He was adamant the animal was feline and too large to be a feral cat. “I looked across to the other bank and could see this big black thing,” he told the Indy on condition of anonymity. “I thought it might have been a dog, but then it stood up and flicked its tail around its body like a cat. Then it pricked up its pointy ears and slowly walked into the saltbushes. “To be a dog, the tail wasn’t correct, the ears weren’t correct, the head shape wasn’t correct and it was jet-black. The size of it, the shoulders, the

way it walked; it was a cat. “My mate at first said it was a big, black feral cat, but I said it was a panther - he ended up agreeing with me. “It was not a dog - we know what we saw. “We decided to call it The Rivermouth Panther.” The animal appeared to be stalking two dogs on a walk along the sandy creek bank, the man said. “It was there to hunt, that’s why it was there. “It would sort of crawl along on its belly to a piece of seaweed and blend in. It was sleek and quiet. “It’s not something you see every day, let’s put it that way.” The animal disappeared when a tall man and

two children appeared behind the dogs, the witness said. He and his mate had clear conditions to view the animal upwind and about 20 to 30 metres away. “It was so close, I could have cast my rod and hooked it.” The man photographed the animal on a small waterproof camera, which he said he always took to Point Impossible to take surf photographs. The man was already a believer in Australian big cats before his experience at Point Impossible, he said. “There are so many theories and too many sightings, even videos. It’s very hard to dismiss.” But Australian big-cat author Mike Williams said the man’s photographs were inconclusive.

“From the witness, it’s a big cat but from the pictures it could be anything from a labrador down. “I can’t rule it out as a cat, but I can’t rule it in, either.” The sighting’s time of day was “atypical” but other apparent big cats had been seen on beaches, Mr Williams said. Witnesses have claimed numerous big-cat sightings around the region in recent years, from Lara to Torquay, Mt Duneed and along the Surf Coast and its hinterland. Many witnesses have compared the animals to large cats such as panthers and pumas, although some believed they were thylacines, or Tasmanian tigers. The last officially documented thylacine died in captivity in Tasmania almost 100 years ago.

THE JOURNEY TO A CLEVER AND CREATIVE FUTURE At this week’s Council meeting, the community-led vision document, Greater Geelong: A Clever and Creative Future was endorsed by the City’s Administrators. The document, which will guide the region’s development over the next 30 years, was built from the input of more than 16,000 people and the Greater Geelong community’s desire to be regionally, nationally and internationally recognised as a clever and creative city-region. The beneﬁt of conducting this valuable piece of community research is clarifying a long-term focus for the region to assist the development of business

The document will guide the 2018-2021 Council Plan, which will be reviewed annually, and the City’s annual budget and action plans will be consistent with the document with future Councils reporting their progress and performance against its milestones. All proposals to Council will be also required to demonstrate consistency with Greater Geelong: A Clever and Creative Future. The City would like to thank its project partners and the more than 16,000 Greater Geelong people who contributed their ideas and enthusiasm to the 30-year vision document.

City set on ‘clever’ path Geelong is now on course to a “clever and creative future”, according to the city’s council administrators. And they expect that subsequent elected councils will adhere to their long-term plan for the city, Greater Geelong: A Clever and Creative Future. The state-appointed trio voted this week to adopt the “community-led vision document” to guide the region’s development for the next 30 years. The administrators spent more than $500,000 developing the blueprint amid doubts about whether October’s next elected council or successors would follow the guidelines. A City Hall statement this week announcing the vision’s formalisation included expectations that councils would fall in line. Future councils would “report their progress and performance against (the vision’s) milestones”, the statement said. City budgets and action plans would also be “consistent” with the document, along with any “proposals to council”. More than 16,000 people had input into Greater Geelong: A Clever and Creative Future, City Hall said. The document outlined “the community’s desire to be regionally, nationally and internationally recognised as a clever and creative city-region”. “The document is a blueprint for the region and an important step along a journey to transform the community’s aspirations into reality,” the City statement said. “The benefits of conducting this valuable piece of community research include clarifying the long-term focus for the region, which will assist the attraction of business opportunities and investment, as well as informing how the region will grow. “Greater Geelong: A Clever and Creative Future will change the way that the City does business and engages with the community.” The vision proposes numerous social, economic and environmental goals, including

long-term plans by sticking to them, orientating their budgets toward them, influencing the plans of other stakeholders, lobbying government for their support, and facilitating an environment that encouraged private investment.” Dr Alexander thanked “project partners” and others involved in developing the vision document. “It’s been a wonderful and enlightening journey, and it’s only just begun.”

Double Take A Deakin University multi-campus exhibition is set to puzzle patrons when it combines art with scientific enquiry in Geelong next month. The show, Art and Performance by Research, will feature at Geelong’s Waterfront Campus for oneday only after opening in Burwood on Wednesday, Deakin announced. And what a show it promises to be! “It features the interdisciplinary practices of our leading artists and thinkers who are expanding knowledge in new ways and conflating the traditional boundaries between art and science, improvisation and planning, museum practices and personal remembering, performance, public interventions and installation,” said curator James Lynch. Sounds, err, interesting. Anyone interested in conflating their traditional boundaries can experience Art and Performance by Research from 9am to 3pm during Deakin’s Waterfront open day on 20 August. Meanwhile, a somewhat more-grounded event - although with a significant aerial aspect - sounds like presenting an intriguing historical account at Geelong’s National Wool Museum this weekend. Aviation buff Kevin O’Reilly will tell the story of Charles Pratt, who flew a plane to Geelong in 1920 to set up a flying business on Belmont Common (pictured). Pratt and his brothers, regarded as aviation pioneers, built, fixed and flew planes at the common until World War II. Interestingly in this age of drone photography, Charles Pratt was also a pioneer of aerial photography, taking numerous snaps of the region before it was trendy to do so from the safety of a control box somewhere on the ground. Kevin will present the story of the flying Pratt brothers in the museum’s auction room from 2pm to 4pm on Sunday. For gold-coin admission, it’s cheaper than a Tiger Air flight - but dependable as well!

Lump leads to ‘fight of her life’ Grovedale’s Glenda Ford was a fit, 55-year-old enjoying her first grandchild when a small, painless lump appeared in her throat. But, the following months of radiation therapy, tube-feeding and life-threatening surgery to fight aggressive neck cancer changed the marketing executive’s life forever. Glenda recounted her experience this week as Barwon Health prepared for World Head and Neck Cancer Day on Thursday. “Eighteen days after surgery to remove the lump, I had a massive bleed requiring hospitalisation to cauterise it,” Glenda said. “As I was going under, I was told I might not live through the operation, but thankfully I did. “I had 35 rounds of radiation therapy simultaneously with chemotherapy over seven weeks. “After the tonsil was removed, I had a PEG tube inserted into my stomach to allow me to have a high protein liquid food. It remained there for eight months. “During this period, I was unable to eat solid foods for most of that time.” The treatment was enough to endure, but Glenda said she and husband Geoff also encountered social stigma attached to head and neck cancers. “People assume that if you have a head and neck cancer, you’ve been a heavy drinker and smoker,” she explained. “But not all people who have a head and neck cancer have been drinkers or smokers, including myself. “Without using the exact words, some people considered me and others with this type of cancer to have lived a dirty life.” Glenda said she was in remission, but her treatment and recovery were ongoing. “I’ve learnt to live around these limitations,” she said. “I have a wonderful quality of life. I’m living and enjoying my life with friends and family and doing volunteer work.” Now 63, Glenda volunteers at Barwon Health’s Supportive Care Centre with people encountering similar experiences. She hosts morning tea twice a month for up to

It’s a terrible cancer that causes so much trauma with a long road to recovery,” Glenda said. “I made a conscious decision to remember as much as I could about my experience, so I could help others going through similar experiences. Many people supported me during and after my illness.” Glenda said the support included raising money for “bags of the essential things people need when

they begin their treatment journey”. Barwon Health had been providing the bags to newly diagnosed patients for the past five years, she said. Barwon Health said head and neck cancer was a general term for a range of cancers in areas including the oral cavity, tongue, palate, jaw, salivary glands, throat, and nose. Radiation oncologist Maitham Mathlum described head and neck cancer as complex but responsive to treatment. “Early detection plays a big part in prognosis and educating the community and GPs about

symptoms and signs of the disease is important,” Dr Mathlum said. “Symptoms depend on the site. However, a person may experience one or more symptoms of pain, swelling, hoarse voice and difficulty swallowing. Anyone with symptoms or concerns should consult a GP, he said. About 4000 Australians were diagnosed with head and neck cancers annually, with Barwon Health treating 200 last year.

Letters Chamber supporting revitalisation I wish to respond to Richard Worland’s letter in last Friday’s Geelong Indy. Central to the change underway in Geelong’s CBD is City of Greater Geelong’s Revitalising Central Geelong initiative, developed in consultation with the community, including traders. Understandably, vacant shops give rise to concern for the CBD’s future but the sight is not unique to Geelong. The CBD has more shops than ever - they are just not all visible from the street. Referring to parts of the CBD as “ghetto strips” unfairly tarnishes Geelong’s brand and reputation while doing nothing to support business confidence and investment in the CBD. Geelong Chamber of Commerce works closely with traders and the City to shape plans and strategies for the CBD. The chamber has never stated that it supports parking-charge increases. The chamber has said that charges in Geelong are reasonable compared to other major cities. Regarding Mr Worland’s allegation that the chamber wanted Sunday penalty rates abolished, the chamber has publically stated that Sunday’s rates should be the same as Saturday’s. The chamber’s surveys of businesses indicate that excessively high rates on Sundays crippled small family businesses and deterred the hiring of young casuals and students. As a small, not-for-profit organisation with a dedicated, voluntary board of directors, the chamber works tirelessly to support Geelong business and to encourage investment in our city. The chamber is proud of its contribution over more than 160 years and will continue supporting and encouraging the city’s entrepreneurial spirit. City serious about bullies In response to Anna Michalik (Letters, 21 July), City of Greater Geelong has comprehensive procedures in place to deal with bullying and harassment concerns raised with the complaints review panel. All concerns are reviewed and, where appropriate, investigated. Each matter is assessed on individual circumstances. If an employee is found to have breached the staff code of conduct or other related workplace policies, disciplinary action is taken. The City has prioritised building good workplace culture, with a range of strategies and programs now in place to engage and train employees in acceptable workplace behaviour that supports organisational values. More specifically, much work has been done over the past 18 months to recognise the serious risks associated with bullying and harassment. Awareness about procedural fairness has been heightened, and monitoring and control mechanisms to ensure employee rights are not compromised have been refined. Staff take best cab off the rank Regarding the Indy’s 7 July story on more taxis in Geelong, I couldn’t agree more with the following week’s letter by Kevin Russell, headlined Good Times As Competition Returns. What did we see on the front page of the Indy but a company in fear of competition! If Geelong Taxi Network has a solid model, why would it fear competition? Peter Valentine feared that competition might “poach” his drivers. Yes, as Geelong drivers they might get a better offer. Is Geelong Taxi Network the most-expensive taxi outfit in the state? If so, why shouldn’t Mr Valentine’s drivers jump if they get a better offer? In short, if a business doesn’t treat someone as well as other businesses they will leave. It’s not rocket science. Silence not settled on carbon I write regarding a contaminated industrial site at the corner of Roseneath, Victoria and Douro Sts, North Geelong (Black Grime Anger, Geelong Indy, 14 July). Have residents noticed a black, greasy substance on their driveways, houses, windows, pets, or shoes, which is then walked inside floor coverings et cetera? They would not have seen it floating onto their properties but when airborne it can cover a radius of up to 5km, which includes North Geelong, Norlane, Bell Post Hill, St Helens, Drumcondra, West Geelong and central Geelong. Flying high with Frank and Patty Both a philanthropist and a one-off footy player put the focus on Avalon Airport last week. Frank Costa said in last week’s Indy “it would be just the icing on the cake if we could get Avalon (Airport) operating to its full capacity’’, while Patrick Dangerfield said elsewhere that Virgin had to get a plane there or the Cats would travel Jetstar - “it makes no sense to drive one hour and 20 minutes just to get a plane”. In order to raise the ante and gain Turnbull Coalition Government funding so Avalon can achieve its jobs-creating potential, influential comments from the aforementioned are essential. Yet why stop there? The opportunity to keep Avalon’s international-inbound tourism accreditation and fresh-foodexport-hub and related upgrades as a regional Federal Government priority should be shared across the community. City of Greater Geelong has closed Osborne House and booted out tenants since Easter. I met Osborne Park Association, which said the City had no plan for when or if the association would be permitted back. The association and other groups, such as Vietnam Veterans Association Geelong and District, Geelong Memorial Brass Band, Geelong Naval and Maritime Museum, Corio Bay Camera Club, have been left homeless. Apparently the building is full of mould and spores but the City has not advised how this issue will be resolved. Meanwhile, the tenants temporarily meet in locations around Geelong with their belongings locked up in Osborne House. This beautiful, cherished building is now vulnerable to irreversible damage from fire, flooding and theft. Council should immediately contract the expertise to clean the mould and return the building to the community but I suspect this is the toohard basket as the City awaits a new council to make a decision, which by then might be too late. Osborne House’s future has been on the shelf too long. As a candidate for Brownbill Ward, I have a plan to bring Osborne House back to former glory without financially burdening the community. Essentially, an adjacent large parcel of dormant land belonging to the City could be offered on a long-term lease for an appropriate development. The monies generated could then fund Osborne House’s restoration. With some of Geelong’s best bay views, the land could attract significant interest from the private and corporate sector. Sam Newman for mayor Some dismissed councillors now have the gall to nominate again for election. Along with Michael King and Peter Murrihy, we need new blood of councillors with various occupations, such as tradies, accountants, unionists, solicitors and the self-employed, not as we previously had: highly paid councillors and mayors with high-ranking positions elsewhere at the same time. Nobody can serve two masters. City of Greater Geelong’s CEO, who is on a salary around $400,000 a year, stated it was his decision to pay about $25,000 a year of ratepayers’ money for the City to be a member of the unelected Committee for Geelong. I guess that amount is chicken feed to him, so why did we need council administrators? Aside from the often-silly role he has to play on The Footy Show, an ideal candidate would be John ‘Sam’ Newman. He is a born leader, articulate, does not suffer fools, is financially independent, has no close family ties, and is politically unaligned. Room has new view of our hearts By Justin Flynn Local director Emma Watson has poured every bit of energy into her upcoming adaptation of E.M. Forster’s novel A Room With a View. Watson has not only written the play, she has made the costumes, hats and even upholstered the furniture to depict the 1908 setting. “She just lives and breathes it,” said Christine Davey, artistic director of independent Geelong theatre company Skin of Our Teeth Productions. “Emma approached me with this idea and she’s just really nailed it.” This bold and sumptuous new adaptation of A Room With a View will premier in Geelong next month. Watson’s adaptation bolsters E.M. Forster’s career defining literary ideas of feminism, the belief in freedom and truth, while adding grace and a gentle learnedness. It follows the story of English rose Lucy Honeychurch touring Italy with her prim spinster cousin Charlotte Bartlett as chaperone. It’s a play about change and loss, about pretension and honesty, about expectation and entitlement and ultimately about how spontaneous actions in a rigid world of set social codes can shatter and explode into life changing potential. “It’s really just a lovely story,” Davey said. “Sometimes we need an escape to another world or another time where life was a little bit easier. “The costumes are beautiful and it’s just a beautiful play. It’s a comedy, but it’s not your barrel of laughs, ‘ha ha’ type of comedy. Geelong’s council will host the story of an erotic dancer who allegedly horsewhipped a critical editor. The Exotic Lives of Lola Montez will arrive at Drysdale’s Potato Shed next week, City Hall has announced. Montez, real name Eliza Gilbert, was an Irish entertainer and Countess of Landsfeld who visited Australia in the mid-1880s to entertain miners and others during the Gold Rush. She was renowned for flashing genitalia during her “erotic spider dance”, which the Sydney Morning Herald reported in 1855 as “the most libertinish and indelicate performance that could be given on the public stage”. City Hall’s promotion of the Drysdale show repeated the claim that Montez “horsewhipped the editor of the Ballarat Times for a bad review”. “She swung down mineshafts on a single rope with champagne in hand. She escaped arrest, dressed only in her jewels and she showered with gold nuggets. “Her life was swathed in scandal. City Hall described Montez as “the wildest showgirl of the 19th century”. “The Exotic Lives of Lola Montez is a wildly contemporary dreamscape steeped in Australian history and the extraordinary lives and freedom of one of the world’s most adventurous women,” said arts and culture manager Kaz Paton. The show at the Potato Shed on 4 and 5 August would star award-winning across and Montez descendent Caroline Lee, along with “Parisian dance siren Holly Durant”, the City said. “International queen of provocative variety Moira Finucane would direct the production, based on the work of award-winning playwright Jackie Smith. Finucane was looking forward to her Potato Shed return with the Montez show.

The festival, from 24 to 26 November, has already officially sold out of two-day tickets after reporting record sales across the board. By Mandy Oakham Time is running out to catch the mega successful, local production of Oliver at GPAC. If you want to consider yourself a member of the adoring crowds who have already enjoyed this show which delivers a twist on this much-loved classic, then you will have to catch the last shows this Friday night, Saturday matinee or Saturday night. Geelong people have been asking for more of this big and bold production with more than 6000 people seeing the musical so far in the past two weeks. A cast of 84 fill the stage at the Geelong Performing Arts Centre, recreating Charles Dickens’ classic story of cast-away orphan Oliver Twist and his struggles to find some “Food Glorious Food”, as well as his place in the world. “The response from Geelong has been absolutely mind blowing, and it has has been an absolute honour to be staging Geelong’s largest musical in years,” managing director David Greenwood said. “We wanted to take the whole production to a whole new level while still delivering the old favourite songs and script that people know and love. “We tried to create something new with a revolving stage which allowed us to create real differences between night and day, as well as new, vibrant costumes which have been completely reimagined by Maxine Urquhart .” The first two weeks of performances have been hailed by Stage Whisper and Geelong Entertainment (Theatre Critics) as “picturesque”, even down to the foggy street scenes and midnight smells of London. Mr Greenwood said that the amazing generosity of Geelong audiences would have long term impact on growing the local arts community.

A physiotherapist for 13 years, Leanne Scownd enjoys working with her patients to achieve the best possible outcomes, and keeping them active. Cats’ recruit Tuohy lines up in clash against Blues By Justin Flynn Geelong recruit Zach Tuohy will line up against his old side Carlton when the two sides clash at Etihad Stadium tomorrow night. Tuohy has been a revelation for the Cats this season, averaging 25 disposals per game. “Zach’s had a great year, he’s been really important for us,” coach Chris Scott yesterday. “We’re certainly a better team for having Zach in the 22.” Geelong was soundly beaten by Adelaide in the last round and Scott said the final margin of 21 points “flattered” his side. The Cats retained second spot on the ladder, half a game clear of GWS and Richmond and six points clear of Port Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne. The 16th-placed Blues have been better than their five wins suggest although without midfield duo Patrick Cripps and Ed Curnow they have stalled in recent weeks, which culminated with a 30-point loss to bottom side Brisbane last Sunday. Still, Scott is not banking the four points from this clash just yet. “Carlton presents some challenges on that front,” he said. Scott said Harry Taylor will continue to drift between attack and defence for the rest of the season, depending on match ups. Taylor booted five goals last weekend. “We anticipate him playing both ends of the ground depending on the circumstances,” he said.

“Five in a half last week was a pretty good effort when we were struggling to score.” Tom Hawkins’ form has been down of late, but Scott backed his spearhead to regain form. Hawkins has 37 goals this season “We’re really optimistic that he’s going to play a big part in the rest of our season,” he said. “We acknowledge the fact that we need him to be.” Carlton ruckman Matthew Kreuzer looms as a major headache for Scott. The injury prone big man is enjoying his best season and has rocketed into All Australian calculations. An ankle injury to Mark Blicavs, which will see him sidelined for at least the next few weeks, means Kreuzer could dominate although Scott said Blicavs’ role this year was more of a swingman rather than a straight ruckman. The Blues will need more from Bryce Gibbs who gathered just eight disposals last week after being tagged by Tom Rockliff. With the absence of young gun Cripps, Gibbs, Marc Murphy and former Adelaide player Matthew Wright they need to get plenty of the ball to get Carlton anywhere near victory. The Cats should win comfortably with more midfield class thanks to Patrick Dangerfield, Joel Selwood and Mitch Duncan, who welcomed the birth of his first child this week with partner Demi. Geelong by 45 points.

Wintery conditions slowed anglers down over the past week, but those who braved the elements found the fish more than willing to have a chew. Sheltered locations around Corio Bay again hosted some superb angling on soft plastics cast hard up against structure in deep water. Three-inch Gulp minnows worked well on 1/8oz jig heads and allowed to fall to the bottom before a slow retrieve. Pinkie snapper, flathead and Australian salmon all snapped up soft plastics around the bayfront. Anglers who cast out bait from the rocks at St Helens or Limeburners Point continued to catch garfish, while fishing bluebait on the bottom caught pinkies and flathead to 45cm. Keen anglers prepared to put in long, cold hours snagged the odd winter snapper to 6kg. The outer-harbour fished well for squid when calmer weather returned. Drifting in 3m to 4m over weed beds with size-three jigs suspended just above the bottom produced excellent results. St Leonards still gave anglers the opportunity to tangle with a few King George whiting. Pippie and tenderised squid were the baits of choice, with whiting to just over 40cm taken. Fishing at sunrise or sunset helped angler’s boat better numbers of fish. Queenscliff Harbour was a hot spot for squid, again with some shelter from the strong winds. The trick to getting numbers of squid was to fish the slack tides. Spinning from beaches along the Surf Coast provided the hottest fishing. Casting lures on a rising tide resulted in outstanding numbers of salmon to 2.5kg. Bream to 45cm still took baits along the numerous Surf Coast estuary systems but proved fickle at times. Portland remained the ideal location for southern bluefin tuna, with school-sized fish taken on the troll with skirted lures. Freshwater fishos enjoyed the action down west, with Lakes Bolac and Tooliorook and Deep Lake all giving rainbow trout to 1.5kg for anglers casting shallowdiving hard bodies or fishing Powerbait on running sinker rigs. The Barwon River around Queen’s Park was another location for a quick fish out of the weather. Pest species carp to 8kg were a target for anglers fishing corn kernels on light running sinker rigs. Next week’s forecast north winds should be excellent for surf fishing, either casting lures or soaking pilchards at Bancoora or Jan Juc beaches on run-in tides. Drifting for squid over shallow grass beds in the outerharbour could also be worth the time, while freshwater options extend to Stony Creek Reservoir’s brown trout to 1kg on spoontype lures.
