■ Rani’s killer gets 29 years for callous knife attacks…
Jailed for murder Christian Bain-Singh will spend at least 22 years in jail for murdering Doveton woman Rani Featherston and a “terrifying” attack on a neighbour. On Friday 28 July, Supreme Court Justice Christopher Beale handed down a 24-year prison term for Ms Featherston’s stabbing death on 2 April 2014.
He sentenced Bain-Singh, 24, to another 13 years in jail for a knife attack on Daniel Maynard in his Doveton home 11 days earlier. The “total effective sentence” was 29 years with a non-parole period of 22 years. “Your terrifying crimes went unsolved for over two years,” Justice Beale said. “Regrettably, no sentence that I can pass will undo the harm that you have done. “Ms Featherston was a defenceless woman of

only 34 years of age who you subjected to a horrifying death. “You stabbed her repeatedly. “When she tried to run off, you chased her and resumed your attack. “You posted a callous message on Facebook whilst still at the crime scene. “Ms Featherston’s family are overwhelmed by her awful death. “Their relationships with each other and
outsiders have suffered greatly.” Bain-Singh, a qualified butcher, pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary, intentionally causing serious injury and murder over the two attacks. “I am satisfied that you are remorseful,” Justice Beale said. He also said Bain-Singh was 20 at the time and “a young man without the familial supports which many in our community enjoy”. Continued to page 2.

Community centre lives By Casey Neill A Bunnings blitz breathed new life into the Doveton Neighbourhood Learning Centre garden. Manager Paula Correia said the outdoor space was instrumental to the Oak Avenue centre. “The purpose of the garden is to bring the community into the neighbourhood house and to provide a nice place where people can grow food, either take some home or we use it here for our community meals programs,” she said.
“We’re going to be doing a series of community workshops so people can learn more about container gardening, being seasonal, about being sustainable and organic. “We can bring people into the garden and show them first-hand.” Bunnings Dandenong team members transformed the existing garden beds for the community kitchen, added in a vertical garden and planted fruit trees and vegetable seedlings. “The garden started off as just a neighbourhood house program about four years ago, but we just made do with recycled stuff,” Ms Correia said.
“It didn’t last very long because the materials weren’t very good quality. “After that we started working with the Department of Justice. “We have some programs here where people come and do some courses with us and help us out with the community garden, but we’d run out of funds.” She said the makeover also included a mural, bamboo screening and paving. “We’re very happy to have new people come here and use the garden,” she said.
From front page “Such supports, had they existed, may have helped you to cope better with the loss of your fiancee, your job and your fear of losing your rented home,” he said. Justice Beale noted that Bain-Singh had a troubled upbringing and that since his crimes he’d reconnected with a church “and began to get your life back in order”. He also described how Bain-Singh broke into Mr Maynard’s home “armed with a large knife” intending to steal from him, entered his bedroom and stabbed him when he started to stir. “He was lucky to survive the attack. You could have easily fled as he began to stir from sleep,” Justice Beale said. “Apart from the ongoing mental and emotional trauma he experiences from being so viciously attacked in his own bed, he’s lost much of the functionality in his hands.” Justice Beale described Bain-Singh’s “chance encounter” with Ms Featherston in Lace Street, Doveton, 11 days later. “There had been some unpleasantness between the two of you on 2 November 2013, when she was carrying on out the front of your home,” he said. “You claim that she called you a ‘dog’ for having called the police on that earlier occasion and that she threatened to get you.” Justice Beale said he was not satisfied that Ms Featherston had threatened Bain-Singh but even if she had “she was unarmed and you should have just walked away”. “Instead, you took out a hunting knife and attacked her,” he said. “On your own admission to police, you stabbed her first in the back, to the left shoulder blade. “She tried to run away. You chased after her. “When you caught up to her, you stabbed her repeatedly. “After she went to the ground, you told police that you stabbed her once more to the throat, with force.” Before leaving the crime scene Bain-Singh posted song lyrics “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight. It’s the size of the fight in the dog” to his Facebook page.

Outflanked - national service plan under fire
In Brief Pre-dawn cigarette heist Thieves armed with a sledge hammer and crowbar stole cigarettes from a Hallam supermarket. Police are appealing for information about the robbery, which occurred at the Coles on Domain Drive about 3.26am on Tuesday 11 June. The thieves were wearing balaclavas and gloves and left the store in a white Mitsubishi Evolution, which was captured on nearby CCTV footage. Police believe the same people were responsible for multiple burglaries in the east and south.
By Victoria Stone-Meadows Casey Council’s controversial plan to force all 18-year-olds into the Army is taking hits from all angles. From a councillor who wasn’t present in the chambers during debate, to federal politicians and veterans’ rights groups, the council has found a marked lack of support for its bold plan. Casey Councillor Wayne Smith was not present when the motion was raised at the general council meeting on Tuesday 18 July, but said he would have spoken against it. “I read it in the agenda before I had to leave the meeting early and had not thought it would get anywhere; I though it surely was not going to get up,” he said. Cr Smith said he was absolutely shocked when he found out after the meeting that the motion had passed. “At the end of the meeting I asked how the motion went and when the other councillors said it passed unanimously, I thought they were joking,” he said. The motion will see Casey Council write to local federal MPs and urge them to consider supporting a move to reintroduce mandatory military service for all Australians when they turn 18. Cr Smith said Casey Council has no business meddling in federal policy areas and should focus on helping the residents of Casey have better lives. “The average everyday citizen in Casey wants us looking at issues that affect them and their quality of life in Casey,” he said. “Every person in Casey will have their views on conscription, but council doesn’t need to have that opinion on their behalf.” Cr Smith said if he were in the council chambers when the motion was raised, he would not be able to support it as a matter of conscience. “Personally I don’t agree with it and feel we are not in a situation to warrant it,” he said.
Police are searching for these people. They want you ... Casey councillors Amanda Stapledon, Rex Flannery and Rosalie Crestani want to see national service introduced for all 18-year-old Australians. 170716 Picture: VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS Two of the federal MPs Casey Council resolved to write to as part of the motion have shown a clear reluctance to support the plan. Member for Holt and Deputy Chair of the Intelligence and Security Joint Committee, Anthony Byrne, said he could see what council was trying to achieve, but fell short of putting his support behind the move. “I appreciate that there is an issue with youth crime in our local community, and understand that we need to work co-operatively to find an effective means to keep our community safe,” he said. “I have been actively working with the security and law enforcement agencies to keep Australia and the community safe and I will continue working with my parliamentary colleagues to discuss all options for keeping the community safe from any potential threats, particularly addressing the rise of youth crime rates in the electorate of Holt.” La Trobe MP and Chair of the Parliamentary
Joint Migration Committee, Jason Wood, said he would not support implementing mandatory national service. “What the council is trying to achieve is getting young people out of crime and the gangs, but for me there are a lot of other things I’ll be doing before supporting that,” he said. “I can’t put my support behind that; I will be more supportive of getting more funding for youth programs, diversion programs, and giving young people hope. “I don’t think this will be government policy, but their intentions are good.” While the Australian Defence Force was not able to provide comment, a spokesperson from the office of the Minister of Defence was quick to shoot down the idea. “The government has no plans to introduce compulsory military service,” the spokesperson said.
Fake policeman steals car A fake police officer lured a man out of his car in central Dandenong and stole it. The victim was sitting in his silver Skyline coupe at Wilson and Pultney streets about 11pm on Tuesday 25 July. A man opened his passenger door, identified himself as a police officer and asked the victim produce his licence. The man, wearing a blue hoodie, asked the victim if there were any drugs or weapons in the vehicle and asked him to step out. A second man then appeared. He was described as 183 centimetres tall and of European background, and was wearing a dark baseball cap, a grey jumper with a black puffer jacket on top and dark cargo pants with white runners. The first man got into the victim’s car and drove off toward Pultney Street. The second got into a silver or grey SUV and drove away. Endeavour Hills students got a taste of political campaigning and voting. Southern Cross Primary School held a mock election during the last week of term two as part of its problem-based learning (PBL) program. Students were given a problem at the start of term, and developed a project to solve it. They were learning about democracy and were asked to find students who would best represent their needs to the local government. Students formed political parties and campaigned. On election day, each party gave a final speech and presentation to the middle and upper primary school about the main things students wanted to improve school. Their campaigns included longer breaks, no school uniforms and a later school start time. Students received voting slips and cast their votes in booths. The winning party was The Southern Stars Government, which believed students should have more science in schools.

26 July 1917 Noble Park Mechanics Hall
1 August 1967 Clarke to run here Saturday World record holder Ron Clarke should start favourite for the Victorian Amateur Athletic Association’s 10 mile road championship, next Saturday, over a course at Dandenong. They will begin at 2.30pm from the Dandenong Swimming Pool with 29 entries; teams comprising more than 300 runners.
Owing to the want of interest on the part of members of the hall committee and residents generally, no more dances will be held in the Mechanics Hall until further notice. It was thought at the time that the proceeds derived from these gatherings would bring in a fair revenue, and thereby assist the funds. The building is sadly in want of a coat of paint, both inside and outside, and since the new school has been built next door, the need of renovating is more pointed. Unless residents take a more live interest in these affairs, they will wake up one morning to the fact that there will be no such thing as a mechanics hall in Noble Park.
20 years ago 28 July 1997 Holden zooms ahead General Motors Holden has applied for a permit to build a new $20 million premises at Dandenong. The investment is part of a major upgrade plan for Holden’s national spare parts centre, off the Princes Highway.
The new facility will house state of the art equipment to cope with anticipated growth in export. Holden’s manager of finance and administration, Mr Rod Campbell, said the new facility showed the company was committed to Dandenong. “The upgrade will provide employment in the construction industry,” he said. The Dandenong base, which is the national distribution centre for spare parts, turns over $185 million a year and employs 250 workers. Warehouse manager Mr Aivars Paeglis said the project would include building a 50,000 square metre warehouse and a separate administration building. He said it would be purpose-built to achieve three objectives: a world-class, high speed, order processing system using the latest and most sophisticated technology; cope with expected growth both in the domestic and export markets; and maintain the company’s ‘leading edge’ customer service level.
5 years ago 30 July 2012 Still here to meat and greet Everyone has their favourite local butcher. They are there for advice and known for service with a smile. It’s a dirty job that requires countless hours and a huge commitment but, with 1100 shops in Victoria alone, the humble butcher doesn’t seem to be going anywhere any time soon. Rob Boyle of Rob’s British Butchers in Dandenong has been in the industry for more than 40 years and although the 70-hour weeks can wear him out, his passion for the job remains. After operating in Dandenong for 20 years, Mr Boyle says he has built up an extremely loyal customer base. “People like being able to talk to the butcher and ask advice,” he said.
Grains of truth in scales of time The late Jack Johnson was the author of When the Clock Strikes, a fascinating account of growing up in Dandenong, his years tending to the city’s pipes and drains as a plumber and bringing up a family with wife Frances in their beloved home in Macpherson Street. Next to the bench beside the scales inside Old Patto’s Hay and Grain Store, and on each side of the angled front shop corner, were six wooden bins, three on each wall. They were built of Kauri pine with sloping hinged wooden lids. It was into these bins that the large bags and sacks of wheat oats, chaff and seeds were tipped and then taken out with various sized scoops. Many of these metal scoops were made in Godfrey’s sheet metal shop for all the various businesses. There was a set of spring balance scales which
JACK LOOKS
BACK JACK JOHNSON
hung above the corner wooden section that joined the three bins on each wall. It had a metal dish supported by small chains in which the produce could be weighed then tipped into bags. Or you could take off the dish and chains and hang a sugar bag from the hook and weigh the contents. There was another set of scales which sat on the end of an old turned legged kitchen table, between the end bin and the office doorway.
It was like the counter scales in the old grocery shops, but it had a slightly bigger loose metal dish which sat in a four arm metal cradle, making it easy to take off and tip the contents into a paper bag. The weights were placed on the small counterbalance platform. These weights were cast-iron or steel, not solid brass like they were in Mrs Johnston’s grocery shop across the road. The main section of Old Patto’s shop was to us kids just magic in sights and aromas and atmosphere, as were the many characters that drove the various types of horse-drawn vehicles tied to the hitching posts out front. On the left of the door into the back store and hung on the raw unpainted and unstained Baltic pine lining board walls were many signs advertising all types of seeds and grasses, farm supplies and agricultural products. These signs ran around the wall of the sales
area and finished at the end of the front window. Beneath them sitting on the floor were large sacks of every type of bean, pea, pumpkin, sunflower, maize and any other type of crop that could be grown at that time. The tops of the bags had been opened and evenly rolled down to display the shining seeds. A small handwritten sign on a piece of white cardboard leaned against the back edge of each bag and named the seed and its price per ounce, bushel or bag. The large bean seeds reminded us of the ones Jack was conned into taking for his mother’s cow. But, we were pretty smart bush kids and were bloody sure that all we could grow from these beautifully marble-coloured seeds was a patch of broad beans which we did not like to eat anyway. They were so shiny and variegated in colour they looked like an alley bag of marbles: honey reels and blood reels, which we used in our games on the dirt of the school playground.

Experienced in the workplace By Victoria Stone-Meadows The City of Casey has made a move to help people living with a disability gain valuable workplace experience and skills to become more independent. At a general council meeting on Tuesday 18 July, Councillor Amanda Stapledon raised a notice of motion that would see council become a job experience provider as part of council’s new Disability Access and Inclusion Policy. The motion calls for council officers and Cr Stapledon to meet with disability education and support providers the Narre Warren Learning and Community Centre and Outlook Disability Services. Cr Stapledon said she was aiming to set Casey Council up as a provider of workplace experiences for people in the community living with a physical or learning disability. “What I want to see is council providing job placement opportunities for organsations like outlook to give them links for their people in job placements with council and outside of council,” she said. “I envision it would work as a sort of work experience, but where people can learn some skills and gain real life work experience.” Cr Stapledon said getting this project off the ground would not only be valuable for the people

it was geared to help, but also it would benefit council. “People living with a disability have so much to contribute, and this is fantastic way of enabling them to do so while gaining experience and confidence to launch into their own career,” she said. “This plan also has benefits for the whole economy by adding to the wider economy and helping families with things like social isolation and deprivation of finances.” “Isolation can bring about mental illness, so we want to get more people about and about and also give everyone an opportunity to learn about each other.” While council is in the process of updating their policy in regards to inclusions and access for people with a disability, Cr Stapledon said now was the perfect time to get this project going. “How much better would it feed into the council’s disability plans? We only have to look at the culture and policy moving forward,” she said. “I am really proud of my fellow Casey councillors for supporting this, and officers are going to execute this well. Council officers will meet with Outlook and the Narre Warren Learning and Community Centre over the coming weeks to discuss project options.

National Tradies Health Month in August is a timely reminder for all tradies, labourers and anyone who has a physically demanding job to stay safe at work. Alarming WorkSafe Victoria figures show that almost 26,000 people were injured in workplace accidents during 2016. The City of Greater Dandenong was the second highest region to launch WorkCover claims and construction jobs were found to be the third highest industry to make workplace injury claims. Senior Associate at the Springvale office of Adviceline Injury Lawyers Tina Toutzaris-Sabo regularly represents tradies, apprentice tradies and labourers who are injured at work. Ms Toutzaris-Sabo knows the physical nature of this type of work not only through representing tradies, but also by being married to one! “The most common injuries suffered by tradie clients are back, neck, shoulder and knee injuries,” Ms Toutzaris-Sabo said.
Ms Toutzaris-Sabo explained that these injuries can be caused by heavy lifting, repetitive lifting, bending, twisting, looking up for prolonged periods, falls trips and slips, and working in awkward or confined spaces. An injury can result through a specific incident or develop over a period of time. “The number of apprentice tradies who suffer serious injuries at work is very concerning to me,” Tina said. “I have come across young apprentice tradies who have had limbs amputated because they were not properly trained and supervised.” Any person who has been injured at work and needs medical treatment or time off work is able to claim financial assistance through the WorkCover scheme. “Does anybody else think Keysborough smells like lollies right now?” The question on the Keysborough Resident’s Page invited a deluge of agreement and plenty of speculation about the source and scent notes. The hotel also supported disadvantaged school students to attend a high school networking day lunch where they were shown career opportunities and practical workforce skills. “Active participation with and in our communities to ensure they’re thriving and vibrant places for people of all ages to live in and visit is a strong focus for Atura,” said Atura Hotels operations and development director Geoff York said.
“To be recognised for two consecutive years reinforces that supporting the local community is one of the key priorities for Atura Dandenong.” Atura Dandenong was also a finalist for the Best Mid-Range Accommodation and Hotel Restaurant of the Year awards. Two staff members were also category finalists - Anastasia Parashis for Hotel Industry Rising Star and Simon Collins for Food and Beverage Employee of the Year. Atura Dandenong opened in April 2015.
A Dandenong manufacturer is bucking the trend and bringing manufacturing back from overseas. On Monday 24 July, IVECO Australia announced that from October its fully imported Stralis ATi would instead be assembled in Australia as the Stralis AT. It will locally source selected components including mirrors, wheel angles, trailer connections, batteries, wheels and liquids. The Stralis AT range will include a 6x4 prime mover and 6x2 rigid. It will join existing Stralis AS-L, Powerstar, ACCO and Delta and Metro bus chassis models being built locally. IVECO will invest in tooling and software to calibrate the AT’s adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning systems. Building the Stralis AT in Australia will reduce lead times from vehicle order to delivery and enable customisation. “IVECO is one of only a few remaining commercial vehicle brands to manufacture here - this latest expansion in Australianbased production demonstrates the company’s commitment to having a strong local manufacturing presence,” IVECO Australia managing director Michael Jonson said. He said the move would also create “a modest increase in the facility’s manufacturing workforce”. “The expansion of local production not only reflects a strong belief from IVECO Australia that local manufacturing is sustainable, but the initiative is also strongly supported by IVECO’s parent company, CNH Industrial,” Mr Jonson said.
TAX TIME
Pull up your socks, but not claims

of exactly $150. We expect many of these claims to be legitimate but the results of our random audits show that people are making mistakes.” Ms Anderson said there were three golden rules to follow which would help taxpayers to get their deductions right. “One - you have to have spent the money yourself and can’t have been reimbursed, two the claim must be directly related to earning your income, and three - you need a record to prove it,” she said. “The myDeductions tool in the ATO app is also a great way to make keeping records for your
deductions easier. If you start using it now, next tax time will be a breeze because you can send your deductions to your tax agent or upload them directly to myTax.” It is important to remember, whether you lodge your own tax return or go to an agent, you need to be aware of what you can and can’t claim. If you use an agent, you are still responsible for making sure your deductions are correct. For more information about work-related expenses, visit ato.gov.au/deductions and to find out about myDeductions, visit ato.gov.au/mydeductions.
Common mistakes the ATO sees includes people claiming ineligible clothing, claiming for something without having spent the money, and not being able to explain the basis for how the claim was calculated.

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is increasing attention, scrutiny and education on workrelated expenses this tax time. Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said that last year over 6.3 million people made a work-related expense claim for clothing and laundry expenses, totalling almost $1.8 billion. “We have seen claims for clothing and laundry expenses increase around 20 per cent over the last five years. While this increase isn’t a sign that all of these taxpayers are doing the wrong thing, it is giving us a reason to pay extra attention,” she said. Ms Anderson says common mistakes the ATO has seen include people claiming ineligible clothing, claiming for something without having spent the money, and not being able to explain the basis for how the claim was calculated. “I heard a story recently about a taxpayer purchasing everyday clothes who was told by the sales assistant that they could claim a deduction for the clothing if they also wore them to work,” Ms Anderson said. “This is not the case. You can’t claim a deduction for everyday clothing you bought to wear to work, even if your employer tells you to wear a certain colour or you have a dress code,” she said. “For your clothing to be eligible for a deduction, it needs to be occupation-specific clothing, protective clothing or a uniform that is unique to the organisation you work for,” she said. Ms Anderson said it is a myth that you could claim a standard deduction of $150 without spending money on appropriate clothing or laundry. She said that while record-keeping requirements for laundry expenses were relaxed for claims up to this threshold, taxpayers did need to be able to show how they calculated their deduction. “Over 1.6 million taxpayers claim a deduction

HOME BUYERS
GUIDE
MAT SUCKLING DIRECTOR OF RMS HOMES We have discussed many elements of buying - where to buy, how to obtain finance, what the impacts are of serviceability and a whole range of topics which are important for all first home buyers to know and understand. This week I want to talk about building. A lot of people get scared by the process but provided you have your eyes wide open you will not expect any surprises and be comfortable with the process. Obviously, I am very familiar with what we do at RMS! What our competitors do I have no clue. But I imagine some processes we have would be shared by others. A lot of disputes between clients and builders occur due to two fundamental and easily fixable reasons: communication and poorly prepared paperwork. As a rule of thumb, most builders aren’t necessarily very good customer service representatives. Most of the experiences people have with building, when it is negative, goes along the lines of “I could never get a hold of them”, “they said they would fix something and they never did” and other various issues on site where a client will ask a question and struggle to get an answer. The way I see it we have an obligation to be as transparent as possible. Whilst it is not important to know every detail of
construction, I believe it is crucial to let clients know as early as possible when there has been an issue on site, and how and when it will be rectified. At RMS we provide our clients with an update each and every Friday or Saturday afternoon (as trades tend to work on the weekend, so the job is always moving). It is important to set a standard in communication, and making clients feel comfortable knowing if they call their builder they will be greeted with a cheerful and attentive person on the other end. Secondly, paperwork is critical to delivering a successful build project. The reason most volume builders do not accommodate design or structural changes is because they cannot quality control the process in their major operations. At small to medium sized builder level it is more easily managed and supervised, making plan changes a little more feasible. However, the best bit of advice I can give when you are discussing your inclusions or build - whether it is with your sales representative or building supervisor, is to record everything on paper! He said / she said banter is no good. As my clients would know, I am exceptionally anal with paperwork! It may take a little time to get to site to make sure everything is correct, but it saves a lot of heartache and hassle later! Dot your I’s and cross your T’s. And then when you have done that do it again before any shovels are turned.

HUDSONS ESTATE AGENTS.
LANGMORE LANE OFFICE.
FRANK FACEY CELEBRATES CENTURY In the early 1900s when Frank Facey opened his real estate business in Dandenong, Berwick was a beautiful country town where weary travellers would stop to refresh their horses before heading out to East Gippsland. Frank Facey envisaged the popularity of the south-east would grow as families and industry alike realised the untapped potential in the picturesque hills and valleys; however, nothing could have prepared him for the extent of growth that was to come. By the late 1900s, three generations of Faceys had succeeded in driving the business forward. Frank Facey First National Real Estate Dandenong, Narre Warren and Mulgrave were all thriving businesses, Facey
Industrial-Commercial was leading the way in the Commercial and Industrial sector so, by 1994, the timing was perfect to expand into Endeavour Hills and Berwick. The first Berwick office on the corner of Langmore Lane and Gloucester Avenue introduced current day staff, Pater Watson (Director), Graeme Curtis and Elisabeth Gunness, as well as Greg Phillips, to the Facey extended family. Today, they offer an unparalleled level of experience as they draw on the decades of change which they have seen transform the area. By 1997 Frank Facey First National Real Estate moved offices to the current location in High Street, incorporating Hudson First National Real Estate. Hudson Real Estate had been operating
successfully in Berwick since 1950 and Bill Hudson was a much valued local icon. When Frank Facey First National merged with Hudson First National Real Estate, there was no holding them back. The stage was set for a future of continued growth and success. The south-east was moving forward at an unprecedented rate and Frank Facey First National Real Estate was in the driving seat. By 1996 Monash University had opened the Berwick Campus. Hospitals, schools and industry were thriving in the south-eastern corridor and the extension of the Monash Freeway was a welcome necessity. The district attracted an ever increasing
population, and continues to do so to this day, but against all odds, the township of Berwick has retained its old world charm and relaxed rural appeal. The tree lined avenues, 19th century architecture and extensive parklands continue to adorn the township, making it one of the most popular residential locations in the City of Casey. It’s hard to imagine what Frank P. Facey would think of the area now, but one thing is certain, his intuition was spot on when he opened that first real estate office in 1917. Next month, we continue to follow the major events and significant characters involved in the success of Frank Facey First National Real Estate/Neilson Partners First National Real Estate.
CRANBOURNE EAST Maintained to an immaculate standard inside and out, this home is ready for its new occupants to move straight in. Boasting a gorgeous facade with amazing street appeal and manicured front garden, this property is set to impress from the beginning. Visitors who step inside are greeted by the spacious entry and floating timber stair case. They can follow the high ceilings, large white gloss tiles and downlights throughout the home that leads into the modern kitchen that features a five-burner gas cooktop, 900mm electric oven, dishwasher, gloss cabinets and plenty of storage space. The adjoining family/ meals/ enclosed alfresco area provides a relaxing space for the whole family or can be opened up making it perfect for hosting larger gatherings. Upstairs visitors will find another large living area with double doors leading on to the balcony. The master bedroom contains a large walk-in wardrobe and private en suite with spa bath and oversized shower. The three additional bedrooms have built-in wardrobes and access to a central bathroom. Other features of the home are as numerous as they are grand and include 5 Star energy rating, full block out privacy fence extensions around the whole property, three-phase power and upgraded gas connection. Set in a prime location, this home is in walking distance to Cranbourne East P12 School, a stone’s throw from Casey Fields Sporting Complex, Casey RACE, Chisholm TAFE, Cranbourne Race Course and numerous shopping strips.

Hallam has managed to tackle its rivals into the ground so far this season. 170320_07

Becoming the hunted keeps Hawks sharp By Nick Creely When Hallam defeated a star-studded Bentleigh to take out the inaugural Seymour Law Cup in the pre-season competition this year, there was an ominous feel to the Hawks. After finishing fifth in the Southern Football League Division Three competition in 2016 - and bowing out to the Doveton Eagles in a final - the expectation was that Hallam could be around the mark once again. But coming into the pointy end of the 2017 season, Hallam is the premiership favourite, a tag that the club will relish as finals approach - but not let it become complacent. “After we won the pre-season final against a Division 1 side, we automatically become the hunted this year - even though we finished fourth
or fifth last year, we earnt that right after winning the pre-season comp,” Hawks coach Scott Slater said. “But we haven’t actually won a flag yet, we need to stay focused - we haven’t achieved anything yet.” Slater said that the turnaround of his club’s onfield fortunes has come down to a clear plan focusing on little goals based around development of kids and lifting the standards of the whole club. “It is really pleasing - had a three year plan put in place, we wanted to be competitive last year, make finals this year and have a crack at a flag next year, but we’re already 12 months ahead of that,” he said. “We have tried to break the season down to six-week blocks - last year we won our first six games and everything looked on track - but when you get hit with a loss it’s hard to keep it on track.
“We’ve been big on pushing through the kids in games where it is safe to do so - we’re mindful on the kids’ development, we’re aware and mindful we need to get games into these kids to mould them into full-time senior players. “We understand there is a long way to go this year - I’m happy to sit where we are at the moment, but we have to stay focused.” Heading into a potentially epic finals series, with rivals Doveton Eagles, Ashwood, Endeavour Hills and South Yarra all breathing down their necks, Slater conceded that despite taking things one week at a time, looking ahead won’t hurt them. “Player management is the key for us - if we get an opportunity to rest up a few older bodies or heal some niggling injuries we’ll do that - fresh legs in finals series do help,” he said.
It is just a week away from the sixth AFL International Cup and the excitement is building around Melbourne as footballing teams from all corners of the world compete for glory. The International Cup, which will run from Saturday 5 August to Saturday 19 August, will be played all across Melbourne. Twenty-six teams have been entered in 2017 across the Division 1 Men’s, Division 2 Men’s and Women’s tournaments. Matches will be played in schools and local communities in Round’s Two and Three, with four games to be played around the Greater Dandenong area. The AFL International Cup is played every three years, and no expatriate Australians are eligible to play. Teams comprise solely of amateurs and nationals of the country they represent. The AFL’s head of community and international development Grant Williams anticipates 2017 to be the biggest carnival yet. “The popularity of Australian football overseas continues to grow with more players and fans taking up and supporting our game,” he said “Following the success of the AFL International Cup in 2014, we will again conduct a round of matches in IC17 at suburban and country grounds to give participants an authentic Australian Football experience. “We look forward to welcoming players from North America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific.” INTERNATIONAL CUP MATCHES IN OR AROUND THE GREATER DANDENONG AREA Men’s Division 2, China v Sri Lanka, 9 August, 10.45am - Mentone Grammar (Keysborough Fields). Ireland is the eventual champions in Division 1, Fiji takes out Division 2 and Ireland also wins the inaugural Women’s tournament. 2014 - 25 teams compete, with Papua New Guinea the champions and Canada the Women’s champions.
Role models are inspiration when going gets tough By Nick Creely For someone still so young, budding cricket superstar Yash Pednekar possesses a rare and precious maturity. Even despite racking up the accolades - DDCA Under 15 player of the season in 2016/17, Vic School Boys representation and selection in the Australian Under 16 team - he remains level headed and respectful to a sport he dearly loves. The 15-year-old North Dandenong product now has a new accolade to add to his already prestigious collection - the Greater Dandenong Junior Athlete of the Year. As a youngster idolising cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar, the leg-spinning all-rounder simply feels humbled to be recognised by his community for such a prestigious award. “I didn’t know I was going to get it (the award) - it was a great surprise and it felt great to be acknowledged as one of the athletes coming through
- it motivates me even more being noticed and just makes me work even harder,” Yash said. “I want to give back to the community for supporting me throughout my journey so far - it’s not just the North Dandenong Cricket Club, but also Adrian Jones for nominating me - it’s great having the community behind me, that’s for sure.” Yash lives a busy cricketing lifestyle with hectic training schedules throughout the off-season hopefully holding him in good stead for what is set to be a defining 2017/18 season. Back in April, Yash was one of three young Victorians who were selected to represent Australia in September of this year, and will only months later play a junior international series against Pakistan. “I’ve been training with the Victorian Academy and been doing some work with my batting coach - I’ve been training quite a lot,” he said. “I’ve just received a scholarship to Caulfield Grammar so I’ll be playing school cricket for them when I move at the end of this term, and
when I’m not there I’ll be playing Premier Cricket with Richmond which is exciting. “I also want to perform well in the upcoming National Under 17s tournament and also try and help the Australian Under 16s against Pakistan win the series, and also to just expand my game and get to know my game and what works for me and what doesn’t.” Yash is an astute learner of the game and studies the way his favourite cricketers both prepare on and off-field in order to get the best out of themselves. “Throughout the journey, I’ve loved the way Sachin Tendulkar goes about it, but also Steve Smith - he is just unique but backs his ability and proves that belief overrides experience or how many games you have played. “I just want to improve my fitness overall because I’ll need to play games continually this year, and also just mentally get stronger and be positive in negative situations because they arise a lot.”
The achievements keep on coming for young cricketer Yash Pednekar. 166976_01 Picture: ROB CAREW 27 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 31 July, 2017

Wild windy conditions no match for the Burra By Nick Creely JOURNAL FOOTBALL REVIEW SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 16 A Tim Werner-inspired Keysborough has managed to claim a steady and vital 19-point victory over Caulfield on Saturday, 5.8(38) to 8.9(57). The two top-four sides battled it out in tough and windy conditions at Koornang Park, with Werner booting four goals in a best afield display to inspire the Burras to victory. Just the three goals were scored between the two sides at half time, before the Burras slammed on four goals in the premiership third quarter to surge clear by 19-points with a quarter to play. A defensively minded Keysborough team then shut the game down against the breeze in what is an important result in their pursuit of a top-four position. Aside from Werner, Chris Bryan was outstanding in the ruck and Riet Pal provided a presence. Meanwhile, an extraordinary five-goals were kicked collectively in the clash between Springvale Districts and Murrumbeena, with the Demons going down by seven points. The final scoreline read 2.5(17) to 3.6(24) with both sides struggling to adjust to the windy conditions. DIVISION 3 - ROUND 15 There were no real shocks in Saturday’s Division 3 action, with all the favorites claiming the four points. Hallam kept its foothold at the top-of-the-ladder with a relatively easy 78-point win over Carrum Patterson Lakes, 6.3(39) to 17.15(117). The Hawks showcased just how even they are across the board, with 11 different goal-kickers getting the job done. Strangely enough, the home side actually held a narrow lead at quarter time, before the Hawks flexed their muscles in a powerful five-goal third quarter. Doveton Eagles, meanwhile, held off a determined Lyndale to register a gritty 12-point victory, 9.7(61) to 11.7(73). In a game where the Pumas simply wouldn’t go away, the Eagles led narrowly at every change before pushing ahead and showing enough class to get the job done in an intense final term. A classy performance from forward Adam Read (four goals) proved the difference in the end, while Corrie Wilson once again had the ball on a string. The win is a crucial one for the finals bound Eagles, who are still entrenched into fourth spot and breathe down the neck of the top sides. In other results, premiership smoky Endeavour Hills 17.15(117) barely got out of second gear against Dandenong 4.2(26), Lyndhurst 5.6(36) fell short against Black Rock 8.10(58), Sandown 3.5(23) suffered a heavy defeat to Ashwood 22.16(148) and South Yarra 15.15(105) were too strong for Moorabbin 8.7(55). With just three rounds of football before finals, the top five currently consists of Hallam,
Premiership aspirant Endeavour Hills notched up another solid victory on Saturday.167719 Picture: ROB CAREW Ashwood, Endeavour Hills, Doveton Eagles and South Yarra. EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 1 - ROUND 14 A disappointing performance from Noble Park on Saturday has given the Division 1 finals race a bit of a shake up. At home against a middle range side in Norwood, the Bulls fell by 27-points, 8.11(59) to 13.8(86). Norwood found its range in front of goal in a terrific first quarter, taking a 10-point quartertime lead. But the Bulls simply couldn’t get the game on their terms in the second, conceding four goals and failing to score a major as they faced a hefty
deficit of 32-points. Despite fighting back briefly in the third, the visitors surged clear in a shock result that would have rivals Doncaster and Blackburn beaming from ear to ear. The result is crucial for Noble- the Bulls could have broken a game clear inside the top four, instead they now remain locked in a tight battle from fourth to sixth. Rowville, meanwhile, were highly competitive in their 20-point loss to Balwyn, 14.15(99) to 11.13(79). After a blitz from the home side in the opening quarter that saw the Hawks 40-points down, the visitors fought back admirably to actually win the rest of the contest by over three goals.
Thunder strikes hurt the Valley By Nick Creely NPL 2 EAST REVIEW - ROUND 25 Another powerful performance by Dandenong Thunder on Saturday night has the men from George Andrews Reserve destined for promotion into the top NPL tier next season. Up against Goulburn Valley, the Thunder flexed their muscles, winning 2-0 in a convincing and almost simple victory. In windy conditions, both sides struggled to adjust to the weather early, with no scores coming in the first half. Star striker Brandon Barnes got the ball rolling in the 60th minute with an expert volley over the keeper’s head courtesy of a spectacular pass from the in-form Veton Korcari. Not content with just the single goal, Korcari then headed one in only moments later effectively sealing the win with over 20 minutes to play. Scoring dried up from there with the Thunder putting the brakes on, holding up defensively and chewing down the clock. The latest of the Thunder’s stunning results sees them surge clear at the top-ofthe-ladder by a whopping four-points, a buffer unlikely to be threatened as the season starts to close up. The news wasn’t so good for Dandenong City, who handed the Thunder their handy lead at the top with a 0-2 loss to Murray United that same day. It didn’t take long for United to get on the board in front of their home crowd at Albury, scoring in the 13th minute via some impressive movement of the ball, catching the City defenders flat footed. The game tightened up considerably for the rest of the half, and City went into the main break 0-1 down and desperate for their stars to stand up. After United held firm defensively to begin the second half, the home side once again scored in the 59th minute, virtually sealing the door shut on a comeback. City then made some structural moves, bringing Adem Huskic on for his senior debut at the expense of James Kelly, but it wasn’t enough to resurrect the game. This coming Saturday sees City tackle Thunder at Frank Holohan Reserve in the highly anticipated clash for the Jim Memeti Cup. The match is the replay of the postponed Round 16 clash between the two sides, and is arguably the most important match of both sides’ respective seasons. A win for the Thunder means they essentially seal top spot and their promotion, while for City, a win means they stay in touch with just a handful of matches left to play. Kick-off is 3.00pm, with a bumper crowd expected.
Gippsland’s Power play leaves Stingrays hurting bad By Nick Creely TAC CUP REVIEW - ROUND 14 Wild winds lashed bayside Frankston on Saturday afternoon, with a bruising affair resulting in a painstaking two-point loss for the Dandenong Stingrays. Up against their closest country rivals - Gippsland - a midfield masterclass by Hunter Clark wasn’t enough to give the finals bound ‘Rays the four points. With a five-goal breeze to the City End, the Power couldn’t quite capitalize in the first quarter, kicking seven behinds to hold just a narrow sixpoint quarter time lead. In the second, Clark and midfielders Mitch Cotter and Tom Murphy started gaining an advantage at the clearances, with the combination of Tom De Koning and Bailey Williams in the ruck causing the Power some headaches. An avalanche of goals to the City End, including an utterly classy snap from Clark and some 28 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 31 July, 2017
fine work by Riley D’Arcy forward saw the ‘Rays surge clear by 13-points at the main break. With injuries mounting for both sides, in what was already a fierce contest with plenty of bone crunching tackles and contests, the Power finally used the wind to their advantage, slamming on six-goals to two to once again wrestle the lead back narrowly with a quarter to play. The Power refused to give up against the wind, taking their lead out to as much as 22-points at the 15th minute mark of the final quarter. The ‘Rays - down two on the bench - finally got the game on their terms, running quickly off the backline via some daring kicking from Mason De Wit and giving forwards De Koning, D’Arcy and Jai Nanscawen the silver service that had been lacking before hand. Despite finishing with a flurry of goals, the under siege Power held firm - namely through the efforts of Sean Masterson and tough midfielder Callum Porter, to breathe life into their season once more. There was plenty to like from an individual
point of view for the ‘Rays, with Clark playing a colossal game through the midfield, using his excellent hands and elite foot skills to set up his teammates. Will Hamill, De Wit and Campbell Hustwaite (three goals) all played strong games. The loss did nothing to the Stingrays’ pursuit of a top four spot, with only percentage keeping them out. They will look to rebound quickly when they host Bendigo Pioneers on Saturday at Shepley Oval. STINGRAYS 2.2 8.4 10.6 14.8(92) POWER 2.7 5.9 11.10 14.10(94) Dandenong Stingrays Goals: C. Bonar bounces back from injury for Draft Combine By Nick Creely Inspirational Dandenong Stingray youngster Aiden Bonar is among five ‘Rays selected to take part in the 2017 AFL Draft Combine. The 18-year-old has endured the cruel side of football in recent years, with two successive serious knee injuries hindering his impressive development. But after going through the rigours of rehabilitation once again, Bonar has played just a one match this season among only a couple in the last two years - but that was already enough for recruiters to sit up and take notice of his immense talent. Fittingly, against Northern Knights just two weeks ago in his return match after almost two years, Bonar kicked the opening goal of the match in a strong five-goal victory. The playmaker now has the chance to strut his stuff at the combine, which will run from 3 to 6 October 2017 at Etihad Stadium. Joining the highly rated Stingray will be fellow

Clark and Davies-Uniacke - both expected to be taken in the first round of this year’s draft - are naturally gifted midfielders set to light up the AFL in coming years, and both have enjoyed strong individual seasons. De Koning has been a strong presence up forward and in the ruck for the ‘Rays this year, with his height and agility a strength. In total, there are 83 youngsters from around the country chosen in the Draft Combine, with 54 of those players coming from both Vic Country and Vic Metro squads. The combine is set to test the players both physically mentally over the four day event, with AFL recruiters in the stands scrutinizing their every move. Many skills tests, including the Beep test, clean hands test, 30m repeat sprints and 3km time trial have been scrapped, with AFL clubs being given more allocated time to interview the youngsters and perform medical screenings.

MOTORING Take this Mazda on a grand tour By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Mazda CX-5 has been a hit in Australia since it arrived here just over five years ago. Now the second generation has been introduced. It features interesting style, improvements to the powertrains and uprated technology. A new Touring model has been added to the CX-5 range. Style was one of the big selling features of the original Mazda CX-5. The new one carries the same overall theme, but with a smoothing out of the lines, almost to the extent of being minimalistic. The CX-5’s upright grille is bold, with the upper and lower areas matching neatly. The doors have sculpting in their lower areas and the C-pillar treatment is interesting. However we feel that the rear lights are rather small. The CX-5’s instruments are sporty in their layout, clear and easy to use. Infotainment from the Mazda MZD Connect system is accessed through a seven-inch full-colour touchscreen. There's AM and FM, as well as DAB+ radio. Connectivity is by Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio, Aux, and USB. Control is through steering wheel buttons for many functions, there’s also Mazda’s handy Commander rotary controller on the centre console. The central screen is a good size and

Smooth flowing style is a feature of the new Mazda CX-5 midsize SUV. has Mazda's attention to minimisation of driver distraction. Satellite navigation is optional on the CX-5 Maxx but standard on all other variants. At a time when some companies are offering little or no choice of drivetrains, Mazda has a large suite. Though based on the powerplants of the superseded CX-5, they have significant improvements. All use Mazda’s unusual SkyActiv technology. A 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol has 114 kW, and 200 Nm at a highish 4000

Mazda Australia has again specified the petrol engines be detuned slightly to suit Australia’s low-grade 91 octane standard petrol. A 2.2-litre turbo-diesel puts out up to 129 kW of power, with 420 Nm of torque at 2000 revs.
A six-speed manual is on offer with the smaller petrol engine, all others have a six-speed automatic transmission. This auto is also mated to the 2.0-litre petrol when requested. Power is taken to either the front wheels alone, or to all four wheels for added traction on slippery roads. Our test CX-5 Touring had the larger petrol engine, automatic transmission and AWD, which is likely to be the most popular combination. All CX-5 models have six airbags, automatic emergency braking, smart city braking, blind spot monitoring,
front and rear and rear cross traffic alert and a rear view camera that's backed up by rear parking sensors. There’s comfortable seating inside for four adults, with a fifth being possible without too much hip and shoulder rubbing. However, it’s very much a 40:20:40 layout and may not suit all those in the centre seat if they are on the wide side. Rear seat legroom may prove marginal if a tall person sits behind a driver more than about 1.7 meters tall. The back seats can be set at two angles to let you juggle luggage/ passenger space. Large armrests are a feature we really liked in the front seats. Boot volume, at 442 litres, is almost 10 per cent greater than in the superseded CX-5. A spacesaver wheel/ tyre is used to give added depth to the boot. The area is easy to load and the rear seatbacks can be lowered by using levers in the load area. Ride comfort is impressively smooth on smooth roads and still better than average when the surfaces deteriorate. Mazda's second generation CX-5 is an impressive piece of engineering. The original was good, this one is significantly better. The Mazda range is available for test drive at Berwick Mazda, Prestige Place, Narre Warren on 8796 6222 or at Bruce Clough Mazda, Princes Highway, Nar Nar Goon, on 5942 5584.
